2023.06.05 15:42 sininenblue started playing new vegas blind, need to choose a side, they all kinda suck

Got to the point where I got asked to join a side. Don't actually know what that means for the game, or what thing's I'll have to do, but it seems important.
Wildcard seems like too much work and the legion has slaves so those are denied.
The NCR is a democracy but military, has a lot of bureaucracy, and is super expansionist. Like modern day america with a side of medieval britain, complete with the murder and stealing.
The steel guys have a 'race' supremacy thing. "Were better and smarter than the common man so we should keep the weapons". Also they're all presumably cousins, kinda hot so their genetic pools will become genetic buckets by the end of the century.
House is a techbro who thinks las vegas was the pinnacle of humanity. Also he has robots and AI with guns, which I don't think is a good mix for long term human survivability.
I'm probably gonna choose the NCR, kinda hate them really, but they're the least sucky faction that I know of and I know a couple npcs from their faction that are nice enough (gotta love major Knight). I appreciate that it's a hard choice, but man would it be nice if the followers of the apocalypse had the armies and not the legion or ncr.
Also I still plan to finish it blind, only checked the wiki twice so far, so please no spoilers.

2023.06.05 15:40 HandcuffsOfGold /r/CanadaPublicServants will be going dark on June 12 in protest against Reddit's API changes which kill third-party apps and access to the site by persons with accessibility needs

Hello readers of /CanadaPublicServants (bots and meatbags alike),
The mod team has some news to share with you.

What's going on?

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit. Apps such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, BaconReader, etc. will have to pay exorbitant prices to remain functional starting on July 1, 2023. The app developers have already come out and said they will be unable to do so.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing or accessing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite, the use of the old.reddit.com browser interface, and folks with accessibility requirements such as those who are visually impaired.
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators, including several of the mods of this subreddit, depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities safe, on-topic, and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do as a user?

What can you do as a moderator?

We hope you understand and support our position!

GameStop Stock: Making Moves Toward the Web 3.0 Gaming Space

The video game retailer announced a partnership with Telos to explore opportunities in Web 3.0 gaming. How might this move impact the company's business?
Bernard Zambonin Jun 5, 2023 5:38 AM EDT

What is Web 3.0?

Web 3.0 is the so-called “third phase” of the internet. The concept’s crux is a more open, decentralized, and user-centric web that in many ways resembles the current state of the internet. Web 3.0, however, also seeks to update some of the limitations imposed by Web 2.0 - the current state of the internet - which is characterized by centralized social media platforms and a heavy reliance on cloud computing. Large platforms and services offered by companies such as Meta, Google, and Amazon dominate this contemporary online ecosystem.
Under Web 3.0, users will, in theory, have greater control over their data and digital identities thanks to emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT). These technologies will enable peer-to-peer interactions and decentralized applications that do not need a single authority (re: a megacorporation) behind them.

Partnership with Telos

Telos Foundation, a decentralized not-for-profit organization that oversees the development and governance of the Telos blockchain, recently announced a partnership with GameStop. The partnership will be focused on expanding Web 3.0 gaming.
Backed by its blockchain, Telos will ensure player access to mainstream gaming distribution via GameStop Player, a Web 3.0 game launcher. According to Telos Foundation CEO Justin Giudici, Telos offers GameStop an ideal bridge into Web 3.0 game distribution, allowing the retailer to move into the dynamic space on a secure, fast, and scalable platform.
Through this endeavor, Telos is also seeking to build a bridge between the conventional gaming communities and Web3 audiences.

How could this impact GameStop's business?

Since Ryan Cohen and co. took over GameStop's board of directors, the company has been looking to expand into more tech-oriented pursuits. To date, the most notable initiative has been the launch of GameStop’s NFT Marketplace, which took place in July of last year.
Although GameStop's main focus has shifted back toward cutting costs, attaining profitability, and prioritizing physical stores, over the past year or so, the company's management has been clear that technological initiatives, such as joining Web 3.0 gaming, would remain on the agenda.
Because of the novelty of the technology involved, it is still difficult to know the extent of the impact Web 3.0 could have on GameStop's business. We can, however, speculate on the effects of some key initiatives.
When applied to gaming, Web 3.0 can offer some exciting possibilities. Allowing for verified ownership and trading of virtual assets could be one of them. Blockchain technology could provide players with absolute ownership of their virtual assets through unique, transferable tokens. This, in turn, would allow players to monetize their participation in games.
Other possibilities include interoperability between games; through Web 3.0, players could move items from one game to another. Web 3.0 developers are also looking at game governance and pathways that would allow for more active participation of players in the development and evolution of the games they play.
It is worth remembering that much of this technology is still in an evolutionary phase, and there is still plenty of room for innovation and creativity within Web 3.0.

The Bottom Line

GameStop's top priority is clear: achieve profitability. Since the company reported a net profit last quarter, the focus is now on posting a net profit for all of 2023. Growth initiatives are likely to be less of a priority throughout this year.
However, the video game retailer has a strong cash position of about $1 billion. Even though the company is conserving this amount to keep its business with healthy liquidity aiming for the long term, it has the capital to slowly deploy growth initiatives parallel to its core business. Some of those initiatives, like its new partnership with Telos, will incorporate Web 3.0 technologies.
So far, GameStop's capital allocation initiatives have indicated that the company is cautious and conservative, which, in my opinion, should come as a relief to retail and institutional investors alike.

2023.06.05 15:37 dovetc Noob here with another round of questions

Got 30 hours in the game now. Current playthrough is day 77 and more questions have arisen:
  1. How do I see whether armor is classified as light or heavy for the purposes of the nimble versus BF perk? And does this apply to helmets as well?
  2. Day 77 and still no word on a crisis. The wiki says I should expect to hear notice of an impending crisis between days 50-70. I believe my starting conditions were the default "Random" crisis settings.
  3. What's the thinking around reservists and building my crew beyond 12? If I add some slouch to my back line and give him a polearm to get some XP am I not depriving one of my starters of the opportunity? Do I only use them when there is an injury that necessitates their being put in? Should I just throw them to the wolves and let the strong survive?
  4. I've got one of the 3 major factions allied to me (vanilla). Should I keep doing missions in their sector or is there a benefit to going out and making friends with the other two in their areas of the map?
  5. What's the most efficient use of my time at this phase of the game? By which I mean it seems like 3-day escort missions aren't worth the coins I get for wasting 3 days (when I could be fighting 2-3 battles and doing 2-3 smaller missions). Should I be doing certain missions or raiding camps? Going off into the eastern wild lands and fighting whomever I encounter?
Thanks

BEFORE POSTING, PLEASE REVIEW THE BELOW LIST OF FREQUENT ANSWERS. .

Don't exercise your (long) options for stock! Exercising throws away extrinsic value that selling retrieves. Simply sell your (long) options, to close the position, to harvest value, for a gain or loss. Your break-even is the cost of your option when you are selling. If exercising (a call), your breakeven is the strike price plus the debit cost to enter the position. Further reading: Monday School: Exercise and Expiration are not what you think they are.

2023.06.05 15:17 thodan110 /r/WatchDoodlesDie will shut down indefinitely on June 12 to protest Reddit killing 3rd party apps

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

2023.06.05 15:13 Rewind13337 Gendustry Custom Hives (Textures and Spawning Conditions not working)

Hey,
unsure if this is the proper sub to ask this, but I've been looking through all the resources i can find to see if anyone has anything. Im currently playing a modified nomifactory pack (mc 1.12.2) with a friend and some altered configs (mostly enabling forestry & bees and adding gendustry)
Right now I have a working bee config with a lot of branches and everything, that works as intended (for the most part, lil' bit weird with the whole Biome Requirements on the mutations..)
The Problem is the documentation for the custom hives, especially the spawning conditions and the texture definitions, they dont really work as intended i think.
(This is where i would link my hive config but im not sure what to use to do so)
im currently not setting any textures, but instead tried to make a custom resourcepack where i define the missing textures (default texturepath, according to gendustry wiki) but im not creating the proper "path" im guessing.
The Spawning Condition isnt working at all, its supposed to spawn near moonTurf (Ore Dict entry), in the Biome "Moon" (advanced rocketry mod) but nothing is working, i looked at the documentation and its supposed to work just fine (They used biomes in the same way, for example "Birch Forest" or others), Even tried playing with the debug things, but to no avail, they aren't spawning.
If Anyone has any infos on this, would love to hear it.
Also sorry if this has been asked before, i know gendustry is very whacky when it comes to the implementation of certain things, im just wondering if there is any working hive with custom textures or something.

2023.06.05 15:11 CreativeRealmsMC Community feedback/metapost for June 2023

This will be a bit of a longer metapost since we have a number of important topics we would like to cover.
Contest mode:
Following a trial period of a few months and after reviewing community feedback we have determined that contest mode caused more issues than it solved by making discussions more difficult to follow due to random comment sorting. As a result we have disabled it for future posts whilst keeping the vote hiding feature as it is currently. This means you will once again be able to sort by 'new' and that votes will be hidden for one day after a post has been published.
This should be the best of both worlds as hidden votes seems to prevent dogpiling and as the sub sorts by 'new' rather than 'best' by default, comment ordering will not be subject to user bias as it is first come first serve.
Potential "no mini-modding" rule and clarification of rule 4:
There seems to have been a recent uptick in users attempting to moderate other users behavior and has been especially noticeable in regards to rule 4 in which a user will accuse another user of lying or trolling which eventually leads to multiple rule 1 violations in the form of a flame war.
Implying that another user is lying or trolling rather than simply being wrong or mistaken adds an implication of malicious intent which can be seen as an attack on ones character. It also shifts the conversation to the actions of the user themselves rather than the content of their argument.
Only moderators have the power to determine if a user is lying or trolling in the context of rule enforcement and as users do not need to enforce the rules they should not be engaging in accusatory debates with other members on the sub. If a "no mini-modding" rule is implemented it would make such occurrences a rule violation. If you think another user is lying or trolling report them and move on with your argument.
Many of the Rule 4 claims of “lying” also relate to the speakers identity or claims of personal experience (e.g., falsely claiming to be Jewish or Israeli, service in the IDF, etc.). This puts us in a difficult position where a member uses their background as a core part of their argument (appeal to authority) which means any attack of said argument would inherently fall under rule 1.
We would like to hear your thoughts on how to address this issue but for now if you make an argument based on your personal experiences people are allowed to (politely) challenge them without violating rule 1. If you insist on making them a core part of your argument and do not want to be challenged you could privately verify yourself (without exposing personal information) in modmail similar to how verifications are done in AMA subs.
Misuse/abuse of the report button:
This month we had a combined 724 reports on both posts and comments which has made it difficult for us to efficiently deal with rule violations in the mod queue. As such, we request that you do not report content older than 14 days and in addition do not report every comment in a comment chain. Instead, use the 'other' section to inform us both of the rule/s that are being violated and to look at all the comments instead of the specific being reported. We hope that a cleaner mod queue will make our moderation more effective and help us deal with violations in a more timely manner.
'Promoting hate based on identity or vulnerability' explanation:
This month we received 196 reports of 'promoting hate based on identity or disability' on various posts and comments with the vast majority of them not meeting the standards for enforcement. Simply expressing a negative view or an opinion some people may find offensive about a specific group is not enough to warrant moderation action in this category.
To give an example, a user claiming that Israel is "as disgusting and murderous as Hamas", despite being an offensive comment, did not meet the standards for enforcement. On the other hand, a user who claimed that [paraphrasing] "Arabs are inherently subhuman" was actioned.
Naturally it can be difficult to distinguish between content that violates Reddit's policies and content that is simply offensive but generally we will only enforce something if it meets a specific level of extremity that can't be disputed as a violation.
Summing up:
There's a bit that still needs to be covered and it may need to wait for the next metapost (or it could get pinned by another mod) but I think we managed to cover a lot of critical topics that have needed to be addressed for a while now.
As usual, if you have something you wish the mod team and the community be on the lookout for, or if you want to point out a specific case where you think you've been wrongly moderated, this is where you can speak your mind without violating the rules. If you have questions or comments about the sub rules than this is your opportunity.
(Please remember to keep it civil and constructive, only rule 7 is being waived, moderation in general is not, and abusing this chance to bash moderators will not be tolerated.)

We know that this will conflict with the release of Act 4, Ch 2 Pt 1 chapter, but we believe in doing our part in this protest, especially since in the end we are a mobile-based subreddit.
If you need help with the event, I ask that you check the guides and such posted by our amazing community members beforehand or jump in on our Discord Server.
Feel free to use this post to discuss this subject.

Thank you for your patience in the matter,
-Mod Team

2023.06.05 15:01 AutoModerator Daily Questions - June 05, 2023

This thread is for simple style questions that don't warrant their own thread.
(Although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar (for mobile users, go to the top of the subreddit front page, click the three dots and select "community info") and the wiki before posting!)
Fit checks and "Help me find a pair of Jeans that has X, Y, and Z" questions are a great use of this thread.
(Help figuring out what size you wear is also permitted here but it is recommended you check out one of these tutorials on how to size before asking.)
If you have questions about how your jeans fit, about a particular fabric, when is this jean coming out, where can I find jean X to try on in state Y, what jeans have this fit with these measurements, what jeans fade the fastest, what jeans fade the slowest.
No question is too simple for Simple Questions. Bashing people will not be tolerated and "Read the Sidebar" is not a valid answer here!
Also, we recommend sorting this thread by new comments.
Be Helpful!
Be Civil!
