In the following week there was much work to be done. I left Eric in bed most mornings and had breakfast sent to my room for him. He needed time to recharge the energy in his leg so that he could walk properly again. That was never a specific limitation I imposed, it was simply that no magic is without limitations. Nothing is endlessly powerful, although some creatures come close.
It was the day after Eric returned that I received a letter from the enforcers and I opened it with trepidation. Only twice before had such a letter ever arrived, and neither of those times had I been the one to deal with it. Unfortunately for me, it stated that I was to meet with one of them in a very short time.
“Of course.” I muttered to myself. They’re an impatient species. When fae make plans it can take months, years or decades before we follow through with them, afterall time moves differently for us than most. But when the enforcers decide on something, it must happen immediately. I would hardly have the time to dress appropriately.
As it was I was still buttoning my vest as I left the castle grounds. Rarely do we permit other species to enter the castle, especially not when we are not familiar. Because of this there is a temple in the woods, just beyond the castle shield, that is a traditional place of negotiation.
I arrived shortly and trotted up the marble steps making no effort to conceal my presence. The temple was clean and well maintained, human monks are responsible for its upkeep. They are not more than a small group, but they understand well that we exist.
“You’re late.” an unfamiliar voice chastised me the moment I entered.
“I was given unreasonably short notice. It’s fortunate I saw fit to come at all.” I replied dryly. I hadn’t even told anyone where I was going, perhaps that wasn’t wise.
“Watch your mouth, Faeling. Where is Lazarus?” Ahead I could hardly make him out from the darkness of the temple. He was a dark, feathered creature hiding in the shadows with an array of glistening eyes and mass enough that the tips of his wings touched the ceiling.
“My father is no longer responsible for these territories.”
He paused for a moment, as if contemplating, “...Very well. Then you are the one responsible for maintaining discretion within your territory. As such, you should be aware of an incident on your northern boundary?”
“I’m afraid you will have to be more specific, the northern boundary is extensive.”
“Two from your castle attended the scene. A small town was decimated.”
My heart began to race, I hadn’t sent anyone out, so he must be referring to Eric and Charles. “Yes. I sent peacekeepers out to investigate, as per treaty laws; all instances of mass human interaction must be investigated and settled. There were no witnesses, and I have already begun implementing cover up steps.” I lied calmly.
“Are you aware of its cause?”
“...No.” I admitted reluctantly. If I were to lie in that instance, it would be easily disproved.
“So then it would seem you don’t know everything.”
“I have never claimed omniscience.”
He chuckled, it was a deep reverberation that rattled my vertebrae. “It seems the old ones have returned to the area. Ensure all matters regarding species confidentiality are handled appropriately, failure to do so will result in unpleasantries.”
“That is inequitable. We cannot be held responsible for the actions of another species.” I argued firmly.
“If they are on your lands, it is in your best interest to do so. Otherwise, we may have to investigate further into your operations, there’s no telling what we may find then.”
“All of Dunkel’s activities are within treaty terms. You are welcome to review the paperwork yourself, if you wish.”
“That won’t be necessary at this stage.” he replied calmly, “Keep a handle on your territory, little fae, or else.”
He vanished without allowing me the opportunity to respond. ‘Or else’, if I didn’t understand that it was a genuine threat I could have laughed at the irony of it. Gradually I realized I had been holding my breath, and I let it out slowly. It’s not often that I’m reminded how little my power is compared to ancient beings. The last time they were near was in 1926.
I only remember it because it happened close to the borders of Dunkel, and our father was concerned enough to visit. It seemed the old ones had been destroying towns haphazardly across the north, until they reached a mining town. For whatever reason they left a single witness alive, an elderly blind woman, and that broke treaty laws.
From what I was told, the family responsible was eliminated entirely in a single night. No man, woman or child was left. They were used to set an example. Before that the last time the enforcers needed to step in was the witch trials.

I returned to the castle quickly and began making arrangements immediately. The first step was to understand what human authorities knew of the matter and compulsion would grant me the records easily. Second, I needed to ensure the narrative of what happened was ‘nothing unusual’ as far as humans were concerned. That was easy enough, I sent out a small publicist team. They had handled such things before.
After that I sent word to all alliances, and more reluctantly a letter to my mother at Leúchtend. It was not because I wanted to speak with her. Rather that despite my personal grievances, she was still the current leader of our sister castle and needed to be informed regardless.
Next I needed to secure the borders of our lands better. We needed to know the moment something crossed the boundary, and for that I would need to coordinate with the spell writers. Although I was sure Tóru would be more than happy to express her skills, she almost never let it rest that she wished to do more.
Of course the additional work this incident created was only compounded onto my usual responsibilities. Infirmary reports, construction progress check in’s and permissions, maintenance and repair requests, deliveries and orders. I was grateful when my brother took care of the interpersonal requests, contracts, marriages and so forth.
However when the human interaction documents came in I was ready to quit. Reports from law cases, correspondence from the publicity team - Achaicus could have the castle. I almost didn’t care.
Admittedly most of it is as simple as signing it. Still it all at least needed to be read. It’s important that I know about everything that’s going on both inside and outside of the castle. Unfortunately, when I at last remembered the time I realized I had missed dinner, again.
I sighed, rubbing my eyes, the paperwork was never ending. I would have to come up with a better way of handling it. Achaicus had arranged all the documents so neatly that I couldn’t find anything anymore and I was sure I was going to be the first fae to need glasses at this point. Our eyes aren't designed to focus so close for so long.
“You missed dinner.” my brother commented as he came to stand in the doorway.
“I had realized as much.” I replied bitterly without looking over to him. So when he pushed aside the paperwork and set a plate down in front of me I was caught off guard. “Oh… Thank you.”
“Of course, if you starve, that means I have to take up all the paperwork again.”
“You don’t have to do anything, assign it to someone else, abandon the castle. You’ve got options.”
He ignored me, commenting instead. “You know you missed your appointment with Markos as well. And Jórn has been requesting and audience with you.”
“I’ll see Jórn tomorrow, that matter is unimportant.” I muttered, Markos was going to be pissed with me though.
“And your appointment?”
“I’m fine. I don’t even need it.”
Achaicus sighed exasperated, “Fine. What of your pet then?”
“What of him?”
“He didn’t make any appearances today, is he away?”
“No. He’s probably just still in my room.”
“Your room?”
“Yes, he sleeps there and he needs time to recover from his work.”
He was quiet for a moment, as if deciding something before he spoke more gently. “Brother-..” he began but I cut him off.
“Not you as well.” I groaned.
“Are you and he…?” he continued regardless of my objections.
“What does it matter?”
“If you prefer men-”
“I don’t prefer men.”
He rolled his eyes and I could tell he didn’t believe me. “Whatever, I don’t care what you prefer. However, you could have anyone you wished. Choose someone else, anyone else, choose a thousand others, Nathaniel, just not him.”
“What is it that you have against him? There was a time where you rather enjoyed his company.”
“I only enjoyed his company because he would drink with me without chastising me for it. But that doesn’t mean he’s a good person.”
“Tell me then, which one of us are ‘good’?”
“He will hurt you, and I cannot bear to see it.”
“Eric has never hurt me.”
“He will betray you.”
It was difficult to place the feelings of simultaneous irritation and pure astonishment that he would even dare speak to me about this. “He won’t.”
“How can you be certain? I implore you please, listen to reason. He has a thousand reasons to hate you and he is not the type to forgive.”
“I am certain because I know what betrayal looks like.” I stated coldly and my brother paused. I could see him connecting the meaning behind my words as I continued. “You betrayed me to father, several times. Do you not remember holding a blade to my throat? You wanted to kill me so badly I could see it in your eyes. I loved you most of anyone. When Father sent you away it hurt me so deeply most days I could hardly breathe, and when you returned all you felt for me was hatred. If you believe that didn’t break something in me you’re mistaken.”
“You know how deeply I regret that… You’re my brother, I could never hurt you.”
“That didn’t stop you from trying.”
“Brother I-”
I held up a hand to silence him, “It’s fine, it’s in the past. Which is entirely my point. I trust you regardless of your actions and your intent. It’s not men I like, it’s only him.”
“It’s not real, it’s a trickery.” he insisted, “Believe me, he can make you feel any way he wishes you to feel about him.”
“He’s just a man, how exactly do you believe he has any way of compelling me to feel anything about him?”
“Because I know it!” he exclaimed exasperated, “Because he has used the same charms on me.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Do you remember the night you came to find him drinking with me?”
“Yes.” I answered simply. That had been the night Eric had kissed the palm of my hand.
“It was as if I were under a spell. I told him a great many things that not anyone but you or I knew. I told him how I had tried to kill you, and that we had switched. I told him how father killed Raisa and your manticore… I told him everything. I wanted to tell him. There is no natural reason for that, and before I knew it I was on the floor with him.”
“You and he slept together?”
“...No. He left before it got that far… I don’t know where he went from there.”
“Why did you not tell me of this before?” I muttered annoyed.
“Because he was not my property to be doing such things with… I feared you would be mad.”
“I am mad. You were so drunk you couldn’t keep from telling him secrets others were not meant to hear! What else did you tell him!?”
“N-nothing else…”
I felt ill. Those were things I never wished for anyone to know, especially not for Eric to know. “Get out.” I warned coldly. I was just like our father. When I was upset I wanted to hurt something and my temper was rising. As if I hadn’t dealt with enough things that day.
He left as requested and I chose to sleep in my office. Partly because I didn’t want to see Eric knowing what he knew about me, and secondarily because I didn't want to take my anger out on him. The amount of times I had almost hurt him previously were too numerous, how could I claim to have changed only to revert to the same behaviors?

In the time that followed I did my best to maintain a certain level of composure. Our mother, sister and two of our nieces arrived with their escorts not all that long after I had sent the letter. With them they brought word of more attacks near to their borders and with that information we were able to track a path downward from Leúchtend toward us.
“It’s almost as if they’re testing the line.” Alvíss commented looking over the map.
We had gathered in the war chambers to discuss the matter and had been doing so for some time. My brother and I sat across from one another while Markos, Alviss, Baltzar and Killian sat down the length of the table.
“Or they could just be traveling in that direction.” Baltzar countered. They had been politely disagreeing for hours, it was clear they didn’t like each other all that much.
“All this speculation is useless.” Markos spoke up at last. “If they are testing the borders, they would strike next beside the lake, if they are simply traveling south they should cut the corner toward the west boundary.”
“If I send guards toward the lake townships, and station look outs near the west border, would that be advisable?” I asked, trying not to sound as tired as I was.
“Yes, I believe that would be wise.” Alvíss agreed and Baltzar nodded. If they were in agreement, that was wonderful. Now this dreadful meeting could end.
Each day had been just as exhausting as the day the enforcer visited. My brother still treated me with unnecessarily apologetic behavior, though I had tried to assure him that it was days ago and I had already resolved it. There’s no point harboring unpleasant feelings and quite frankly, no time for it.
In the early mornings I trained with Charles, and in the afternoon I handled the paperwork. I received notification that Tougo wished to investigate the matter independently from us and I granted the request. While Sofie from the fae to the south replied with a curt letter stating that whatever our troubles she wished no part in our affairs. It was thankful that I heard nothing more from the enforcers at least.
Eric was still unable to find his cane and, after seeing how much distress it caused him to be unable to walk, I had Jórn make a simple wooden cane for him. It was not as fine as his original, nor did it hide a sword within it, but it was enough to settle his complaints.
Unfortunately that did not settle his mood of late. Since returning he had been particularly on edge. He woke in the night more than once sitting straight up in a cold sweat and instinctively reaching for his sword.
“Eric.” I complained groggily as he disturbed me. That was another reason I hardly slept, he could not make it through the night without waking and I had half a mind to order that he leave to his own room.
“Go back to sleep.” he muttered, pushing the hair back from his face as he gradually calmed.
“This happens too often.”
“It’s not like I’m doing it on purpose.” he snapped back, irritated. Exhaustion was getting the better of him as well and it took everything in me not to give in to anger. Yet still he refused to tell me what was causing him such distress.
I allowed myself a moment to breathe out slowly before I pulled him closer to me, wrapping my forearm across his eyes as I did. “Nathaniel..” he complained half-heartedly trying to push my arm off before settling.
“Relax… nothing will harm you right now.”
“…You can’t know that..”
“But I do.” I assured, he was so warm against me and I was almost asleep again.
I couldn’t say how much time passed before he spoke again, “…Are you still awake?” He asked quietly. I thought I answered, however I must not have for he continued, “Do you think you could ever forgive me..?”
I didn’t know what he was talking about, or what he meant. I wasn’t even sure I had heard him speak, or if it was nothing more than a dream. However in the morning he was still beside me, and I assumed I must have misheard.
During the day he no longer attended training with Calla and Charles, instead he disappeared each morning until evening. I hadn’t asked him where he was as I was doing my best not to be so controlling, however, as far as I was aware, no one knew where he went.
Still he was in attendance at dinner each day, so I supposed he wasn’t going too far. Perhaps the most disturbing thing I noticed was that he didn’t speak to Calla, and she didn’t look in his direction. After dinner they went their separate ways and Eric no longer secretly took any additional sugar cubes from the table.
Of course I approached Calla about it. By this time it was clear something was wrong with Eric and it had gone on long enough that I needed to know, “Calla, might we have a word?”
“Yes.” She answered with a small curtsy, “How may I be of service?”
“What's going on between you and Eric?”
“Nothing.” That was a frustrating answer.
“Why are you not speaking to each other?”
“Because there is nothing to say.”
I got the feeling she was being purposefully blunt with me. It was almost rude, and it’s not often that Markos’s well trained doll acts out. “Is there nothing to say, or is it that you don’t want to talk to him?”
“It is both.”
“Why..?”
“He’s not who I thought he was. He cannot be trusted.” she stated simply. For Markos or Achaicus to say it was one thing, but for her to say it gave me pause.
“Did Markos ask you to say that to me?”
“No. May I be excused?” Her eyes met mine and I felt uncomfortable. I recognised the expression, pure deep anger, covered over by a complete lack of caring.
“Yes…” I agreed more softly and she left without another word.
I had enough on my plate, Eric somehow pissing Calla off wasn’t what I needed. Perhaps Charles would know better what was going on. Naturally he was the next person I tried to speak with. However I was interrupted as Jórn approached.
“Lord Nathaniel!” He greeted me in a jovial manner and far too loudly. He is slightly shorter than I, and well built from centuries of forgework. His hair is a long tangle of braids woven into one single larger braid down the length of his back. His eyes are deep purple, and he is older than most, perhaps my fathers age.
“That’s unnecessary.” I complained and he smiled
“I have completed the task you assigned me.”
“It was a request, not a task-”
He hardly allowed me the time to correct him before he presented two velvet boxes to me. I will admit the rings in them were beautiful. Rather traditional upon first glance they appeared to have a simple elegance, but as Jòrn insisted I look closer I noticed fine details.
The groom's ring was traditional; a single ring, with engravings on the inside and subtle textures across the surface. While the bride’s rings were a set of two intended to interconnect and had the same inscriptions.
“The diamond is natural, almost flawless, and all rings are made from the same gold nugget.” He began explaining eagerly, “You can see here, the tiniest inscription for the spell. So long as there is love in their hearts for the other the rings will remain a comfortable warmth and if there is deceit in the union the rings will turn ice cold. Are they to your liking?”
“You’ve outdone yourself.” I assured, of course I realized by now he wanted praise.
“I’m sure your lady will be very pleased. I’ll admit I had heard no word that you were with anyone. Can we expect a wedding? Children?”
I couldn’t help but smile tightly. He was fishing for information, I knew it well and it was exactly why I disliked speaking to others. “They are in fact not for me. But I appreciate the time and effort you put into them nonetheless.”
“Who are they for then?” He demanded more irritably.
“A close friend of mine. I’m sure you will learn who in a short time.”
He folded his arms unhappily. Jórn values tradition and has worked at Dunkel for several centuries. Like many of the older generation he is irritatingly nosy and dislikes being incorrect in his assumptions.
“Fine. They had better admire my work.” he grumbled disapprovingly.
“I’m certain they will be able to appreciate it even better than I. Thank you.”
Jórn nodded gruffly before allowing me peace. Claire was going to owe me doubly for that.
I found the time to give the rings to Miss Walsh shortly after receiving them and did so by dropping the boxes on the table beside her. Just as she had dumped herself on me when she asked I have them made. Initially she looked up from her sewing confused, then seemed to understand and a broad smile spread across her face.
“Thank you! Thank you thank you thank you!” she half stood, reaching up without hesitation to wrap her arms around my neck and pull me into an uncomfortable hug.
I suppose I should have expected as much by now as I struggled to push her off. “Claire-” I began disgruntled but when she kissed my cheek I froze.
“Thank you so much Nathaniel, you’re a gem.”
“Please control yourself.” I muttered in response and she gradually let go of me.
“I’m not sorry, oh, and I haven't forgotten I know I owe you one now. Ahhh just nothing, like, horrible yeah?”
“I never agreed to that.”
“Well, if it’s horrible I’ll defer your favor.”
“That’s not permitted.”
“Did you put it in writing?” she countered and I clicked my tongue in annoyance. She’d spent far too much time with Markos it seemed. However, with my silence she continued. “Do you think he’ll say yes?”
“How should I know?”
“You’re friends aren’t you? You talk? Does he ever say anything about me?”
“No, usually he prefers to scold me instead.”
“That’s just because he loves you.”
“Yeah, alright. Don't lose your rings.” I muttered dismissively. Her endless cheer was simultaneously irritating and becoming. Whatever she thought, whatever emotion she felt it all poured out of her without any filter. The NDP campaign wasn't horrible. Danielle is reduced to a very small majority. If this was any other province with multiple parties this would likely have been a minority government. But because it was two it's a very tiny majority government. But it was also a missed opportunity. They didn't win in an election they could have won.
If you take a look at the polls there was a moment in the second week where the NDP led. That in my opinion is where things derailed.
Successful Campaigns are actually very formulaic:
Incumbent have it easy. They are the default choice because that's who people voted in last time and you really don't have to demonstrate what a government under you looks like peope see it. Incumbents can generally follow two paths:

1. Promote all the good things they've done and how the challenger poses a risk to the good they've done. Think Trudeau Bus Ad or Morning Again in America.
   
2. Things are bad but they could get way worse if you elect the opponent. The UCP used this strategy and Liberals used it against Harper in 2004.
   

Challengers have it harder:

1. Convince people that we need change
2. Convince people that change must be now and you're the change we need.

The problem for most challenger campaigns is that they make a great case for why we need change they often forget to tell people why they should be the that change.
That's where the NDP failed. The NDP campaign successfully convinced people that we need change in Alberta. But they failed to convince people that the change should be them and now.
Comparable campaign
Imagine it's the day after the election. The incumbent party is plagued by scandal and infighting. You're the challenger and you're running against the tide of jurisdiction ideology. The incumbent won re-election but is significantly weakened.
If this sounds like I'm talking about the NDP campaign it would be safe bet but I'm actually talking about Harper after 2004. He faced many of the same challenges as the NDP did. The only difference was he came from the right and the NDP from the left.

1. Canadians were generally more Liberal and comfortable with liberal policies
2. Harper was saddled with the legacy of George Bush and neo evangelical social conservatism
3. Harper was saddled with his own support for Iraq war and anti - same sex marriage policies

The 2004 and 2006 case studies for anyone looking to unseat the Tories from the left in Alberta. So what can be learned from it.
Define or be defined
This is where I think the NDP campaign went wrong.
The entire campaign was digging up dirt on Danielle. They focused so much on attacking Danielel they failed to define people what an NDP government would look like.
But it inevitably overshadowed any other message the NDP has especially about what an NDP government looked like.
This opened the door to the UCP defining what an NDP government would look like. Their solution was effectively to scare Albertans into thinking the NDP was a genuine threat to the province.
Nothing represents this better than the Danielle Smith Weather Vane sign. It was great initially as it softened the support for the UCP. In the first week we saw a shift towards the NDP in the election. But in the second week replace it with a positive message like this is what we'd do in healthcare, third week education, fourth week cost of living.
Keep it as simple and easy to understand messages. For example healthcare:

1. Picture of a torn up healthcare cards and the large phrase healthcare should not look like this
2. Side this what the NDP would do on healthcare: replace cards with one on your Alberta driver licence or Alberta ID, new money for healthcare, hire more doctors and nurses, etc.

One of the impacts of defining yourself is that it negates the impact of your opponents attacks. Good example look at Harper in 2004 and 2006:

1. In 2004 he ran a campaign which tried to convince people the Liberals were corrupt and you saw halfway through he pulled ahead but he forgot to tell people who he was and what he stood for.

Liberals in turn defined him as being a threat to our civil liberties, with a hidden agenda which included send troops into Iraq.

1. 2006 Harper ran a policy a day campaign. Focused entirely on demonstrating what an CPC government would do. This allowed Harper to define himself before the Liberals had a chance to define him.

Liberals still ran attacks again which failed miserably and the Liberals had to even pull one.
Another example was Obama 2008. He denied himself early as a post racial candidate which protected him when his pastors sermons came out and the picture of him Kenya came out.
The pastor sermons could have doomed his campaign but because he had already defined himself early he successfully distanced himself in his race speech. A speech most people never watched but narrative of a post racial candidate existed it was already set so just saying he gave a speech on race wa enough to give him credibility on it.
Don't run away from yourself
One of the moments that made me cringe was seeing Rachel Notley in Blue next to Danielle Smith in blue in the debate. The visual was effectively hey we're the same. Which isn't the message you want send when you are saying Danielle is crazy.
You are the NDP deal with the fact it comes with some bagge. Being the UCP also comes with baggage.
Baggage can be overcome look at your cousins in BC. In 2017 they had the baggage of NDP govrement of the 90s and now are effectively a stable governing party.
Better option would have been to stick to a message which defines your government in light of your ideology. In other words play up the positives of your brand don't run away from it.
Running away from your brand actually gives credit to the incumbents attacks. It paints a picture of a group of people with a hidden agenda who cannot be trusted.
Again I point to Harper in 2006. He didn't run his campaign like he was a Liberal. Instead his policy announcements were from the right but not threating:

1. GST cut
2. Child Daycare tax credit
3. Transit tax credit
4. Fitness tax credit
5. TFSAs
6. Child sports tax credit

Find the equivalent from the left. Albertans want positive change too. They want something done about cost of living, state of healthcare or education. Some ideas to play up:

1. Regulating auto insurance rates and electricity rates
2. Building schools or hospitals
3. Improving transit
4. Deal with impacts of climate change
5. Fund public services

Two major oversights in this campaign here. The back drop to this campaign was literally massive forest fires. Which could be balme on climate change and were made worse by UCP cuts.
The other one as the spike in auto insurance and energy prices in Alberta. This campaign ad writes itself:

1. When UCP came to power Alberta had lower auto insurance rates than BC. While British Columbians have seen their cost for auto insurance fall albertans have seen year over year increases while insurance companies deny our claims.
   
2. Under a new NDP government we will bring back auto insurance regulation and ensure that Albertans are protected and pay their fair share.
   

This great message:

1. Everyone knows BC has an NDP government and if their rates are falling the NDP can take credit for it
   
2. It offers a genuine plan which Albertans are requesting.
   

Don't expect people to find your policies
Because they will not.
Most voters want your vision and policies to be given to them. They want them communicated to them in a way that is simple and easy to understand.
The idea is that they will go to your website to find the policies is ludicrous. You need to put those front and centre.
Best idea take the signs you saw on the street. Fine week one focus on attacking Smith. But week 2, 3 and 4 turn them into a policy a week idea;
For example week 2: picture of torn healthcare cards message healthcare shouldn't look like this and list of the things you'd do in healthcare like tying healthcare cards to driebes licence and Alberta IDs
Week three could be education week four could be cost of living. Etc.
Positive messages do work
Think back to most campaigns where a challenger took on an incumbent. The ones where you are successful you tend to have a message of hope and forward looking:

1. Masters of our own house - Quebec Liberals 1960
2. Choose forward - Liberals 2019
3. Stand up for Canada - Conservatives 2006
4. Hope. Change. - Obama 2008

Had surgery a week ago to treat my sinus issues. Details below regarding my condition, surgery experience and recovery.
Condition: otherwise healthy male, mid 30s in North America. Never had sinus issues until 8 months ago when I developed mild congestion on the right side on my nose only. Allergy tested and all was negative. Antibiotics and steroids didn’t help and my condition got progressively worse over the 8 months. At the peak I couldn’t breathe through my nose, lost taste and smell, constantly expelling blood and phlegm, couldn’t sleep, voice tone changed, was constantly fatigued and lacked vitality in my day to day. Probably a little depressed too. My left side the entire time was symptomless and normal until near the end when it suddenly became blocked.
ENT examined me and saw a polyp, ordered a CT and it revealed a large mass (report said 4cm x 4cm x 2 cm) growing from my right maxillary sinus that progressed into my nasopharynx and down my throat. My right maxillary sinus was completely opacified.
Decided to do surgery to remove the mass and clear out any disease. We weren’t touching any other sinus tissue as we were pretty sure the polyp was the cause of all the symptoms.
SURGERY prep: last week was my surgery. Nurses got me prepped and did a good job walking me through the process. Only criticism is it took 4 attempts to get my IV in, and, despite being alright with needles, the 4th and final attempt unfortunately set off a panic attack which made me feel pretty crummy. The nurses did a good job handling me during the panic attack but it was the first time I couldn’t deal with it using my standard protocol (which involves salted nuts and bundling up… couldn’t eat before surgery and had to stay in my surgical gown, but at least they gave me warm blankets).

My surgical notes indicated the polyp was successfully removed and ethmoidectomy and maxillary anstronomy were conducted. The stalk of the polyp was followed into the maxillary sinus and was removed. Diseased tissue was removed from my maxillary sinus. Antral lavage carried out in maxillary sinus repeatedly until clear. Ethmoid sinus was clear. No signs of disease in the ethmoid sinus. I had no packings post surgery, just gauze to catch any blood.

Recovery: PAIN - head pain was significant for the first evening but by the second day was completely gone. I had almost no pain for the second and third days, with only a few Tylenol needed. However by the 4th day I started feeling moderate pain over my teeth near the right maxillary sinus and I had to use Tylenol every 4 hours to keep it at bay. I did not use the Percocet provided to me, not worth the risk. Eventually the pain reduced with Tylenol but was still significant enough for me to supplement with Advil. I now rotate Tylenol 500mg and Advil 400mg every 3 hours and that has completely managed the pain and symptoms.
Sense of smell and taste: were missing for a few days post surgery but eventually came back in full force. The sweet smells of coffee and spices… oh how I missed you.
Discharge: mostly gone by day 7. Still spit out a few large chunks every shower but discharge throughout the day is negligible now.
I do nasal rinses once or twice a day. Work like a charm.
Fatigue: improving but still finding I need a little sleep during the day.
Diet: after a day I was back to normal food without issue.
Exercise: can’t do anything for a few weeks, can’t even lift my baby as they don’t want me straining at all.
In summary: other than mild pain and some fatigue, I feel almost back to normal. This surgery has turned me around and was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was at an all time low before my surgery and now I feel like a whole new man. I am so happy with my improvement in symptoms and quality of life. If it wasn’t inappropriate I’d give my surgeon a hug. The man is a wizard and his surgical team did a great job.

Had surgery a week ago to treat my sinus issues. Details below regarding my condition, surgery experience and recovery.
Condition: otherwise healthy male, mid 30s in North America. Never had sinus issues until 8 months ago when I developed mild congestion on the right side on my nose only. Allergy tested and all was negative. Antibiotics and steroids didn’t help and my condition got progressively worse over the 8 months. At the peak I couldn’t breathe through my nose, lost taste and smell, constantly expelling blood and phlegm, couldn’t sleep, voice tone changed, was constantly fatigued and lacked vitality in my day to day. Probably a little depressed too. My left side the entire time was symptomless and normal until near the end when it suddenly became blocked.
ENT examined me and saw a polyp, ordered a CT and it revealed a large mass (report said 4cm x 4cm x 2 cm) growing from my right maxillary sinus that progressed into my nasopharynx and down my throat. My right maxillary sinus was completely opacified.
Decided to do surgery to remove the mass and clear out any disease. We weren’t touching any other sinus tissue as we were pretty sure the polyp was the cause of all the symptoms.
SURGERY prep: last week was my surgery. Nurses got me prepped and did a good job walking me through the process. Only criticism is it took 4 attempts to get my IV in, and, despite being alright with needles, the 4th and final attempt unfortunately set off a panic attack which made me feel pretty crummy. The nurses did a good job handling me during the panic attack but it was the first time I couldn’t deal with it using my standard protocol (which involves salted nuts and bundling up… couldn’t eat before surgery and had to stay in my surgical gown, but at least they gave me warm blankets).
Surgery: finally went into the OR where I spoke to my surgeon and anaesthetist. All was OK, I was put to sleep and woke up about 90 minutes later. Waking up was amazing—despite having a splitting headache I could finally breathe through my nose again. It was euphoria.
I was in recovery for a few hours, but since everything went well I was discharged and went home with a family member about 4 hours after I woke back up.
My surgical notes indicated the polyp was successfully removed and ethmoidectomy and maxillary anstronomy were conducted. The stalk of the polyp was followed into the maxillary sinus and was removed. Diseased tissue was removed from my maxillary sinus. Antral lavage carried out in maxillary sinus repeatedly until clear. Ethmoid sinus was clear. No signs of disease in the ethmoid sinus. I had no packings post surgery, just gauze to catch any blood.

1. Temple Of Doom: This is definitely my least favourite. Don't get me wrong it has some great scenes such as the opening segment, good villians, mine cart chase and the climax on the bridge is one of the best in the series. Indy is absolutely ripped in this movie which is great. But this movie seems to get a free pass for all the crazy shit it has in it when compared to Crystal Skull.
   All three members surviving a plane crash in an inflatable raft is arguably worse than some of the scenes in Crystal Skull. The dining scenes are painful to watch and Willie Scott is definitely the worst side character in the series, constantly screeching and screaming. The character is so annoying it makes it borderline unwatchable. I even think Short Round is an overrated character. People want to see a spinoff with an adult version of Short Round? I for one am glad that none of the characters in this movie returned in any sequels.
   

The movie is also very static in comparison to the other movies which is something else I didn't like. The other movies felt like more of an adventure with Indy travelling the world in exotic locations. The maguffin is the least interesting in the series. In conclusion I think this movie is viewed through rose tinted glasses and with a lot of nostalgia.

1. Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull: The hate this movie has got throughout the years is something that will always continue to baffle me. Yes this movie has many flaws. Bad CGI, the bad CGI animals that are shoehorned into the movie at any given opportunity. Someone involved in this movie had an obsession with CGI gophers and they add absolutely nothing of value to the movie. Some of the dialogue is not great either and the movie has pacing issues.

However I think this is a solid entry in the franchise. I love how they introduce the character after so many years. Harrison looks great in this movie. I think the first hour or so of this movie is up there with the best. The motorcycle chase, the diner fight and graveyard scenes are all classic Indy. I think the level of abuse mutt got too is unwarranted. Personally I much prefer Mutt to Indys sidekicks in Temple.
The movie falters a bit when they go to the Amazon. The pace of the movie slows. The villians are probably the worst in the series in this movie. The Soviets were perfect choice as villians but they should have made them more threatening. Overall the movie definitely has flaws but it didn't deserve anywhere near the levels of hate it generated. The ending with Indy marrying Marion is great.

1. Raiders Of The Lost Ark: It was very close between this movie and Last Crusade. Both are definitely the best in the series and a cut above the others. I wouldn't argue with anyone that says this movie is best. It's such an iconic movie. Has a character ever been introduced in such an iconic fashion before? The movie just flows really well. Its a proper adventure with Indy travelling to iconic locations.

The villains in this movie are great too. It has some of the best chases and action of the franchise. A very interesting Maguffin. It introduces indys best sidekicks from Marion, Marcus and Sallah. I am glad that these characters were the ones that returned in sequels. Marion is Indys best love interest.I honestly can't think of anything negative to say about this movie. It's truly one of the best if not the best Indy movie.

1. The Last Crusade: Personally this movie just edged Raiders as my favourite. I love everything about this movie. Another proper adventure with some of the best locations seen in an Indy movie, Venice, Austria, Germany and Jordan. The maguffin is great and the returning characters Sallah and Marcus are more fleshed out. I think Elsa is also an interesting character and gives Marion a run for her money.

But it's the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery that makes this movie. You can tell the two had a blast making this movie. Sean Connery even said around the time Crystal Skull was being made that he'd only cone out of retirement for an indiana jones movie. However they only offered him a small cameo at the end which is a great shame.
Like Raiders the movie flows very well and I think it has the best action and chase scenes of the franchise. The tank scene is truly epic. This movie has the best ending of the franchise with the characters riding off into the sunset. Again like Raiders I can't find anything bad about this movie. My one minor criticism is the opening with young Indy is not as exciting as the open of the other movies but Indy battling for the cross of coronado on the ship makes up for it. Definitely one of the best Indy movies.

Background: I've been traveling for almost three years, working remotely for 2 1/2 of them and ended up in Kyrgyzstan because a Portuguese guy in Skardu, Pakistan recommended I visit Song-Kul. I was also interested in Bishkek as a place to work from in the future since I've heard rumblings that it's a good place to do so - umm what?? lol. I speak Russian fluently so this part of the world fascinates me and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Uzbekistan in September so I figured I'd check it out again.
First things first, most importantly - WiFi: Is good, one of the very few good things about Bishkek. Much better than wifi in Uzbekistan. Think 50-70mbps.
Accommodation: I am staying in a decent hotel in the center for less than $20 a night. Just checked Airbnb prices and they are... waaay overpriced. Probably due to an influx of Russians and also believe it or not there are quite a few tourists in Kyrgyzstan, a lot more than I anticipated that likely are the cause of the ridiculous prices.
Food: Groceries and street food are on the cheap side, you can buy water and bread for a fraction of a dollar, samsa for like 75 cents and shawarma for less than $2. Eating out in restaurants can cost about $6 consistently. The restaurants aren't that good though in my opinion.
Getting around: There are buses that are probably a fraction of a dollar but I've been using Yandex (local Uber, there is also another app for taxis that I haven't used) and that runs about $2 a trip. Not really a walkable city.
Things to do: Work. Yeah... almost nothing to be honest, ranks up there for most boring cities I've been to. There is a main square that isn't anything special, a few museums, a market and that's about it. Most of the stuff worth visiting Kyrgyzstan for is outside the cities, Song-Kul was very beautiful and same with Fairy Tale Canyon. Burana is a short ride away. Everything else is better accessed by renting a car in my opinion and is difficult to get to so I'd say this country is much better to visit for a short time as a tourist rather than doing weekend trips from cities (the cities are pretty depressing).
Language: Russian will get you far, some people in the center speak English but I wouldn't expect to have an easy time with it. People in hospitality will be able to speak it. Outside of Bishkek and in the more rural parts, there is more Kyrgyz with supplementary Russian (maybe less the more remote you are).
Currency: No issues using my Betterment debit card withdrawing money but basically everywhere accepts cards.
Nightlife: There are bars and clubs, I haven't gone to any because I am not interested in that at the moment.
Dating: Yeah, nothing to write home about. If you've been to Latin America or Southeast Asia you will have to lower your expectations.
Climate: It's pretty hot at the moment and will likely get a lot worse during the summer months, but it'll be good in the mountains.
Getting out: For shorter distances, you can use Yandex for the easiemore expensive route. Otherwise, marshrutkas/shared taxis will run about $1 an hour and there are bigger buses as well although they are a less popular option. Hitchhiking is also pretty easy but there sometimes is the expectation that you will pay about the same as the marshrutka price. Issyk-Kul is a huge lake that is nice to swim in with some natural sites around it (Fairy Tale Canyon, Ala Kul, and so on). Song-Kul is about six hours away and can be done with a tour (8150 som or ~$93 for two days one night with everything included from Kochkor) or you can drive up there with a regular car during the summer months.
Expats/Digital Nomad scene: Many remote workers from Russia working out of Bishkek as well as a few other international nomads. Sierra Coffee Manas Ave is a good spot.
Final Thoughts: Like I said, Bishkek is not a place I would work from and I'm not sure why anyone would recommend it as it is extremely boring. However, Kyrgyzstan is great if you're a nature lover with beautiful lakes and tons of mountains and parks and opportunities for hiking. People are on the friendlier side.

So I'm an artist from the Caribbean who sometimes get commissioned from clients in the states (not that often). I do digital portrait paintings starting at $150.
My most recent client from the states wanted two portraits which amounted to $300 in my currency but only $111 in their currency. That's about $55 for each. I know there ain't no way a portrait cost $55 in America.
My first concern. After doing these 2 portraits which I consider some of my best work I feel like my prices are waaay too low for the effort and time I put into these.
Second concern. Would it be fair to charge oversease countries based on their own dollar value? So instead of converting it would remain the same. Dollar for dollar basically.

Context - This is the fiftieth of many blog posts where I share the stories of my travels to people interested and for my future self to read back. This post is about ending off a long trip and my time spent in southern Cyprus.
Well, this will be the final blog of not only this particular trip, but the entire first year of travel. Blog number 50, about country number 50…Cyprus.
An EU country that has always been seen as part of the Middle East, Cyprus is geographically in Western Asia but its cultural ties and geopolitics are overwhelmingly Southeastern European.
Arriving in Larnaca for my extended layover from Beirut, I was keen to see what the city had to offer and try to learn about the nation's long and complicated history as much as possible. To do this I visited The Church of Saint Lazarus, the Archaeological Museum, a nearby mediaeval fort and the Hala Sultan Tekkesi.
I even attempted to make the most of my time by heading to a nearby town and further learning about the history of Cyprus as much as I could during this short layover of a visit. I think a few extra days here sometime in the future would be just enough to check out other regions but I was keen to do what I could this time around. I was really hoping to visit the capital Nicosia and see the UN buffer zone/ disputed border line for myself but that’ll have to be another time.
Not only did I try and enjoy my last day of slight warmth before heading back to Canadian winter, but I also made sure to get my fair share of local Mediterranean dishes such as tiropita, koupes and of course, souvlaki!
After a quick stop back at the hostel to get my bag packed, I set out for one last big walk and found a nice coffee shop by the sea. The owner spoke great English, so we just chatted until it was time for me to head to the airport.
Eventually, with no issues or delays the plane departed and landed around 11:30 PM kicking off my overnight stay in Gatwick. By 5:00 AM I woke up freezing cold and decided to just find an open restaurant and grab some coffee to warm up. With the remaining time I just watched YouTube and then eventually a World Cup match until it was time to check in.
After a brief delay attempting to prove that my bag did indeed fit into the carry-on slot, at last, the 8 hour flight from Gatwick to Toronto took off and I was ready for a much needed nap.
It was the final flight of the year and hard to believe as I scrolled through my camera roll and reminisced, I’m grateful for it all.
Amidst all the fascinating people I met, new and interesting foods I encountered and the countless adventures that’ll remain prominent in my memory for a long time, the biggest lesson I learned this past year was the need to slow down, take things as they come, and not over plan. It's amazing how the people you meet and the places you visit can shape your journey in ways you never imagined. Instead of trying to do it all on your own, sometimes it's best to let the experiences and destinations guide you.
I’m in no particular rush to complete this goal of mine but I often found myself compensating for my slight worry about what the future may hold by looking ahead too often instead of being present as much as possible. I think this was more obvious during my first two adventures of this year where I basically already had a return date and focused a lot more attention and effort into constantly filming everything, taking photos and spending too much time editing in the evenings instead of putting the overall experience first before anything else.
Towards the end of the year and even now as I write this in South America, I’ve definitely made sure to spend as much time as possible being present. Whether that means not spending time planning too far ahead, putting work to the side when there’s a lot going on and deciding what I’m really keen or curious on seeing/ experiencing rather than just doing something for the sake of doing it.
It’s all about finding a balance and taking things one step at a time.

I used to have a friend named Elliot. Me and Elliot used to be the best of friends, but we couldn't have been more different. I was a confident, Straight A student. Elliot was shy and had ADHD, so he basically had the attention span of a doorknob.
Each day after school, me and Elliot would go to a near by wood to explore. We'd make up somesilly little make-believe play like Lost Pirates or Adventurous Explorers. We were just kids.
I used to sit next to Elliot in class. He refused to sit anywhere else because he had intesnce anxiety. The teacher didn't mind.
One day, 10 minutes before class started, Elliot arrived to class and sat down next to me. We were in 3rd grade at the time. Usually, Elliot would ask me for the maths homework or ask me to explain the German assignment to him. But that day he came, with his head hanging low. He sat down next to me, quiet as a mouse. "What's up?" I asked, trying to start a conversation. He didn't respond. He didn't talk to me for the entire day. Ignored me, even. Finally, he spoke to me
Just before class ended, Elliot whisper to me. "Today...let's play Hide and Seek in the woods." "Oh...ok. why though? Didn't you say you didn't like to play hide and seek in case you get lost?" I asked, puzzled by his sudden words. "I want to."
School ended and we both headed towards the woods. The woods didn't really have any dangerous animals, but it was dense and a 3rd grader could easily get lost. When we got there, we threw our bags of and ran into the trees. We did a rock-paper-scissors match to decide who would seek. Elliot lost and became the Seeker.
I know it sounds strange, but I feel like Elliot purposely lost. When I pulled out paper, Elliot stopped for a second, before taking out rock. But at the time, I didn't mind. I didn't want to Seek.
The first 2 rounds, I was caught pretty quickly. For some reason Elliot refused to Hide and let me be the Seeker. Again, I didn't really care.
"I'm bored. You're so easy of find, with you big, fat head." Elliot said. "Well, why don't you hide for a chan-" "No." Elliot said firmly. "Hiding is no fun. Let's go deeper in the woods. Deeper then before. Somewhere unfimiliar, where I would have a harder time seeking you."
Elliot wasn't like this. He didn't like to brake any boundaries, he was a scared, shy little boy.
"Who are you and what did you do to my friend?" I joked. "I'm Mr. Nobody" he said in a voice which was ment to be funny but, just sounded serious and blank.
He grabbed my hand started to run deeper into the woods. Taking wierd turns and twist. I yelled at him to stop. "How are we supposed to get out of this, you idiot?!"
"Relax" he said, stoping at a tree. I don't know why, but I felt like like he was looking for this exact tree. It was the broadest and tallest there. "Go hide. Now." It was more of a demand then anything. He hid his face towards the tree and started to count backwards from 100. I ran in the direction we came in. If was going to hide, it was as near to home as I could. I managed to retrace pretty much the entire route back, and hid behind a boulder where I usually hid.
Suddenly, I felt as though I couldn't trust Elliot. He was strange and cold and seemed very intent on going deeper, where if we get lost, we could barely find eachother, let alone our way back home. It didn't feel like the sweet, shy Elliot I became friends with. I was glad I decided to hide close to home. I knew I was a long way from Elliot, but thats what made me feel safe.
5 minutes turned into 10, 10 turned into 15. Nearly an hour had passed. Elliot hadn't found me. I'm nor sure If was glad or not. Suddenly I heard a distant yell calling my name "KENN? KENNY? KENNY!" It was Elliot. I yelled back. Again and again. About half an hour of screaming and yelling eachothers names. I found Ell. He was covered in dirt and blood and was limping. One of the lens of his glasses had fallen out, the other was broken.
He crying still telling my name. He jumped into my arms and sobbed. I started to cry aswell. I put Elliot's arm around me and supported him out of the forest. I wasnt lost physically, I was lost mentally. Emotionally.
We didn't talk about the incidence for months.
Elliot lost sight from his left eye. The doctor's had no idea how. When I finally did ask El about the incidence, he told me that made my heart sink. "I wasn't me. It was you. You dragged me to that tree and told me to Seek. You kept telling me you wanted to hide. But I know it wasn't you. You were not ... Yourself."
Apparently we both were having some kind of hallucination. There was something that wanted us to get lost. And that something would have succeed if I had done what it wanted, and had gone deeper in.
Since then, both me And Ell have been having serious blackouts, not knowing what either of us been doing for the past hour or so. Its like that thing is still trying to control us. Control our life. I've moved out and now live in Canada far from my home town. Elliot shifter to Germany to continue his studies. We still keep in contact. Every week or so, we talk about the incidence trying to figure out what was happening.
I think In a way, that thing really did succeed. We never been so lost before.

Ive always made sure to tip generously, growing up poor in America with my parents working multiple serving jobs at the same time to stay afloat gave me this perspective i suppose. The anger I see online seems to be directed at the people who have to live off of strangers' kindness to supplement their wages, as opposed to the economic system that allows employers to get away with not paying their employees. Is it coming from a "just get a better job" mindset? "I shouldn't have to give you more money because you have a shitty job" is such a petty and privileged attitude, in my mind anyway if you're spending $100 on a meal out at a restaurant then A) you DO have the $20 to tip; and B) BECAUSE of the shitty system, yes, that meal is WORTH $120. It doesn't matter if it should be or not, the food probably wasn't worth $100 anyway but they charge more for the experience/profit/whatever else. It's all arbitrary. Just as arbitrary as you paying for a portion of the server's paycheck.
I get that "tipping culture" is different in other countries but so are the laws about how the employees get paid. This is just the exploitative system in place in America. It's "it is how it is" when it comes to other systemic issues, but spending extra money on something you didn't need to spend money on in the first place is where the system becomes unacceptable? I don't get it, can someone help me get it? Not trying to strawman in bad faith or anything, I legitimately cannot think of the reasoning behind the vitriol so I filled in the blanks with my best guess.

The entirety of Harry "Truck" Hannah's major league career came with the New York Yankees -- all three years of it. But if you include his participation in the minors, he had a long career, beginning in 1909 with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League and ending in 1940 with the Memphis Chickasaws in the Southern Association. He is one of only a handful of players to have a hit in five different decades!
Of all the forgotten Yankee with memorable nicknames -- No Neck, Stanky the Yankee, Sailor Bob, Spud, Slow Joe, The Mummy, Birdie, Bump, and Grandma Johnny -- there's something to be said about the sublime elegance of a big, brawny catcher nicknamed Truck.
James Harrison Hannah Jr. was born 134 years ago today, on June 5, 1889, in what was then the Dakota Territory. (It would become the state of North Dakota about five months later.) By age 2, the family had moved to Seattle, Washington.
As a kid, he was called Harry, but by the time he was playing baseball, he was universally known as Truck. There are several stories as to how he got the nickname. Some said it had to do with his imposing size -- he stood 6'1" and weighed a solid 190 pounds -- and others because of the way he could block the plate as easily as a truck could block a street. Other sources say the nickname wasn't comparing him to a motor vehicle but to a horse, or rather a truck horse, as horses that pulled heavy wagons were called at the time. His daughter, Helen, said he got the nickname simply because he was "big and slow."
Another explanation, a little less colorful, was that Hannah paid the bills in the off-season by working as a truck driver!
Hall of Fame Umpire Billy Evans said Hannah was adept at the catcher's trick of distracting the batter with a steady stream of banter while behind the plate:

"Truck Hannah always has been an object of interest to me when catching. Aside from always doing a pretty good job receiving, he never failed to have a line of conversation that would make a bigger hit on the vaudeville circuit than some of the stuff used by some monologue artists. Hannah keeps up a continual chatter from the time the game starts. Of course, his conversation is largely directed at the batter, in the hope that his line of talk will take the mind of the batter from his work, the making of base hits. He seeks to keep the batter from concentrating, and from the many strikes slipped over by the New York pitchers, I would say there was merit in his system. Hannah's conversation is never objectionable. He usually has the batter laughing at some of his talk, rather than sore."

But Hannah used more than just banter to distract batters. As the pitch was being delivered, he would sometimes spit tobacco juice onto a player's shoes, toss pebbles onto the plate, or throw dirt at their hands on the bat!
Hannah got his start in professional baseball as a 20-year-old third baseman with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League. When the team needed an emergency catcher, Hannah was put behind the plate and stuck there for the rest of his career. Over the next five years he played for five different teams in four different leagues, until in 1914 finally catching on with the Sacramento Wolves in the Pacific Coast League. The PCL at the time was considered by some to be a third major league, or at least the minor league closest to major league competition, and Hannah was regarded as one of the best catchers in the league. He drew interest from several major league teams, including the Tigers, Phillies, and Browns. But it was the Yankees who finally acquired him, paying $4,000 to acquire his rights after he hit .292 in 569 at-bats in 1917.
Truck pulled into the Polo Grounds -- not Yankee Stadium, which wouldn't be built until 1923 -- as the foundation was being laid for a dynasty. Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast Huston purchased the Yankees in 1915 and immediately set about reversing the fortunes of what had been for years one of the worst-run teams in the American League. The Yankees, as they became known in 1913, had only winning season in the last 10 years.
The new owners set about making changes, acquiring a number of valuable players: Wally Pipp, Home Run Baker, Ping Bodie, Aaron Ward, Urban Shocker, and previously forgotten Yankee Bob Shawkey.
After the 1917 season they made the biggest change of all, firing well-liked manager Bill Donovan and replacing him with former St. Louis Cardinals manager Miller Huggins, who over the next 11 years would lead the Yankees to six pennants and three World Series.
Huggins made another move, acquiring from the St. Louis Browns future Hall of Fame pitcher "Gettysburg Eddie" Plank and veteran second baseman Del Pratt. The latter would be a good player for the Yankees, hitting .295/.348/.394 (106 OPS+) over the next three seasons, but the 42-year-old Plank refused to report and retired instead. In return, the Yankees shipped out five players... including starting catcher Les Nunamaker, who had been with the Yankees for four seasons.
And so, needing a catcher to replace Nunamaker, the Yankees paid the Salt Lake City Bees $4,000 for Hannah. He was expected to battle 22-year-old Muddy Ruel to be the backup to the 25-year-old Roxy Walters, who had been Nunamaker's understudy since September 1915, but Ruel would be drafted into the U.S. Army and Walters broke his finger in an exhibition game 10 days before Opening Day. By the time Walters was ready to play again, Hannah was hitting .288/.432/.356 and had thrown out 19 out of 34 basestealers; over the rest of the season, he would maintain that pace to lead the league in CS% (55%) as well as in double plays as a catcher (16). His batting average would fade dramatically, however, dropping all the way to .220 by the end of the season, but he was still contributing with a .361 OBP in 312 plate appearances. Walters's bat never got started at all, and hitting just .199/.239/.236 in 205 plate appearances.
Technically a major league rookie when he joined the team, the 29-year-old Hannah was treated like a veteran from his four seasons in the well-respected Pacific Coast League. In addition, he was -- literally as well as figuratively, at 6'1" -- one of the few players on the team who could see eye-to-eye with the 6'2" Babe Ruth when he was acquired prior to the 1920 season. When Ruth got into squabbles with diminutive manager Miller Huggins, it was often Hannah's duty to keep the peace.
Yankee shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh, the Yankee captain from 1914 to 1921, described one such incident to long-time Yankee PR man Marty Appel in 1974:

"Once we were leaving Boston after a tough loss, and Babe was drunk, and he said he was gonna throw Huggins off the train! He was heading for his drawing room. On the way he stopped in the men’s room and punched this huge mirror. It fell into a million pieces. Me and Ernie Shore and Truck Hannah pulled him down to the ground and sat on him until he passed out. Truck — a big guy — puts him over his shoulder and moves him to the next car."

At the end of the season, the Yankees were happy enough with Hannah that they traded Roxy Walters to the Red Sox. For the next two years, the catching duties were almost evenly split between Hannah and Ruel, who was back from the Army with the end of World War I.
The "Muddy-Truck" tandem was colorfully named but disappointing, with Ruel hitting .255/.325/.306 (71 OPS+) in 560 PA and Hannah .243/.313/.317 (70 OPS+) in 553 PA. Catcher in those days was very much a defense-first position, and both had good gloves, but the Yankees (even with the newly acquired Babe Ruth having an 11.7 bWAR season) finished three games out of 1st in 1920.
Ruppert and Huston asked Huggins what the team needed to win, and his answer: a catcher.
At the end of the season, the Yankees sent Hannah back to the Pacific Coast League, and traded Ruel to the Red Sox for previously forgotten Yankee Wally Schang, the first in the long line of great Yankee catchers. In his five years with the Yankees, the switch-hitting Schang hit .297/.390/.406 (105 OPS+), and in the 1923 World Series -- the first of 27 won by the Yankees -- Schang played every inning of every game, went 7-for-22 (.318) with a double and three runs scored, and allowed just one stolen base.
Hannah would stay in the Pacific Coast League for the next 22 years as a player, coach, and manager. He had a great year with the Vernon Tigers in 1923, hitting .346 with 23 doubles and 6 home runs in 370 plate appearances. His final plate appearance came on May 19, 1940, when he was managing the Memphis Chicks. Two weeks shy of his 51st birthday, with both his catchers injured, Hannah caught both ends of a doubleheader and went 1-for-6.
Hannah retired from baseball two years later after his St. Paul Saints lost 15 games in a row -- 11 of them by one run! He said he couldn't sleep anymore, replaying every loss in his head over and over, second-guessing every decision he made as manager.
He retired to his ranch in Southern California, but remained active enough in the regional baseball scene that when the Los Angeles Angels played their first major league game in 1961, Hannah was selected to catch the ceremonial first pitch.
Truck Hannah died on April 27, 1982, five weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. His wife, Helen, died in October, a month before what would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.

• One of the more interesting aspects in researching information about Truck Hannah is in looking for pictures of him, you come across many photos of trucks owned by women named Hannah.
  
• Hannah made his major league debut against the great Walter Johnson. In his first major league plate appearance, he singled up the middle! He popped out his second time up, then struck out. His fourth time up he drew a walk against Johnson, advanced to second on a single, and scored his first major league run on a double, and the Yankees won, 6-3. Not a bad debut against the future Hall of Famer!
  
• According to his SABR biography: "Hannah’s daughter may have led a more interesting life than her ballplaying father. Helen Lorraine (Hannah) Campbell was one of the first women in Los Angeles to enlist in the Marine Corps during World War II, and retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1975 after 32 years of service. She was also a chaperone for several years with the Muskegon and Kalamazoo teams in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, the league that inspired the 1992 movie A League of Their Own. At the age of 75 she went parasailing for the first time and at 78 sailed over Africa’s Serengeti plains in a hot-air balloon. She died in 2013 at the age of 97."
  
• On May 12, 1920, Hannah went 4-for-4 (all singles) with two runs and two RBIs in a 14-8 rout of the Chicago White Sox. Hannah singled twice in a seven-run 6th inning, as did pitcher Bob Shawkey; it was the first time in major league history that a pitcher and catcher each had two hits in the same inning.
  
• That was Hannah's best day as a major leaguer, but he had another four-hit day on September 11, 1920, with a double and three singles in five at-bats against the Cleveland Indians.
  
• Truck Hannah was the first major leaguer born in what would become North Dakota when he made his debut on April 15, 1918. He also is one of three Yankees born in North Dakota: Ken Hunt, an outfielder in the Yankee farm system from 1952 to 1960 who had a couple cups of coffee in the Bronx, and later played for the Angels and Senators; and long-time Cleveland Indians 1B/DH Travis Hafner, who ended his career with the Yankees in 2013. The most famous Yankee raised in North Dakota is Roger Maris, but he was actually born in Minnesota. The family moved to Fargo when Maris was 8 years old. A total of 20 major leaguers were born in North Dakota, and the best, by bWAR, was Angels outfielder and two-time All-Star Darin Erstad.
  
• Hannah is on the All-Palindromic Last Name Team, along with Dean Anna, Toby Harrah, Eddie Kazak, Dave Otto, Glenn Otto, Dick Nen, Robb Nen, Johnny Reder, Juan Salas, and Mark Salas.
  
• In 1917, Hannah was behind the plate for the Salt Lake City Bees in the Pacific Coast League when former New York Giants outfielder Fred Snodgrass came up to the plate for the Vernon Tigers. Hannah, by this time a 28-year-old nine-year minor league veteran and hitting a respectable .292, wasn't impressed. "So you're a big leaguer? I guess you're going to come out here and show us how the Giants used to do it, eh? Let's see if you can hit this one." That off-season, major league teams asked Snodgrass for his opinion on the top players in the Pacific Coast League, and his report on Hannah: "I don’t like him personally, but I must say he is the best all around catcher in this league, and my dislike for him does not blind me to that fact."
  
• George Halas -- who would later be the founder of the Chicago Bears -- was a 24-year-old rookie on the New York Yankees in 1919. He was on the bench sitting next to Truck Hannah during a game against the Tigers, staring wide-eyed as his boyhood idol, the legendary Ty Cobb, strode to the plate. Hannah, maybe pranking the rookie, told Halas he ought to razz Cobb to try to throw him off his game. Halas did as he was told, and to his surprise, got a reaction: Cobb dropped his bat, marched over to the Yankee dugout, and pointed at Halas. "Punk! I'll see you after the game! Don't forget, punk!" Halas, a Navy veteran and a college football player, was no punk but not exactly looking forward to a brawl against the famously irascible Cobb. He stayed in the locker room as long as possible, hoping Cobb would be gone by the time he emerged, but when he finally came out, the Georgia Peach was waiting for him. "I like your spirit, kid," Cobb said, "but don't overdo it when you don't have to." Halas said it was a lesson he never forgot.
  
• Speaking of Cobb, he told a sportswriter he didn't care for Hannah's distracting patter behind the plate: “This fellow Hannah of the New York club keeps me busier at the plate than any other catcher in the league. I don’t like letting a recruit outtalk me, and in my effort to keep my end of the conversation, I had my work cut out for me making base hits off those Yankee pitchers.”
  
• Carl Mays, who had pitched for the Red Sox since 1915, was acquired by the Yankees on July 30, 1919. Delighted to go from the 38-48 Red Sox to the 48-38 Yankees, Mays made the rounds in the clubhouse, shaking hands. When he got to Hannah, he offered his hand, but Hannah shoved him away, then charged after him. Mays backed up until Hannah vaulted over a table and cornered him against a wall -- and only then did Hannah shake his hand. "We're even," Hannah said, grinning. Since the previous season, Hannah and Mays had been feuding. Mays took great pride in keeping his uniform spotless, and hated Hannah's trick of spitting tobacco juice onto his shoes while batting. So every time Hannah came up to the plate, Mays came "up and in" to make him hit the dirt. In April, the last time they'd face each other, Mays plunked him. But now they were teammates and all was forgiven. Ironically, a year later, Mays would kill Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman with a pitch that hit him in the head.
  
• During the off seasons, Hannah played in the California Winter League, believed to be the only integrated league in professional baseball at the time. Hannah also played against Negro Leaguers when barnstorming with Babe Ruth in 1920 and Dizzy Dean in 1935.
  
• Prior to the 1927 season, Babe Ruth made a silent movie called Babe Comes Home. Based on a short story called "Said With Soap," it had quite the plot: Ruth is Babe Dugan, a ballplayer whose tobacco-chewing habit means his uniform is always stained. He falls in love with Vernie, the laundress who cleans the team uniforms, but she wants him to stop chewing tobacco. Babe then goes into a slump, and finds himself on the bench. Vernie finally relents and gives him a plug of tobacco, and Babe hits a game-winning home run. The movie was filmed at Wrigley Field -- not that one, but a field with the same name in Los Angeles. It was the home stadium for the Los Angeles Angels, and on the Angels were several ex-Yankees, including Truck Hannah. Ruth was much more interested in his old pals than in the movie, and the exasperated director struggled to keep Ruth's attention. Finally, he moved Ruth to a distant park of the stadium, as far away as he could from Hannah and the other ex-Yankees. But Hannah and the others kept mischievously hitting balls in his direction, causing Ruth to botch take after take!
  
• Hannah was in two movies himself, both times as a baseball playing extra. The films are notable because they are both early "talkies". His first appearance was in 1928's Warming Up, about a pitcher (played by Richard Dix, later a star in westerns) who falls in love with the team owner's daughter (played by Jean Arthur, who would later co-star with Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington). A year later Hannah was in Fast Company, about a baseball player (Jack Oakie) who is inspired to greatness thanks to fan letters he thinks come from a beautiful woman (Evelyn Brent) but are actually written by his conniving manager (Skeets Gallagher). In 1940, Oakie was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as a parody of Benito Mussolini in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator.
  
• Joe DiMaggio, still a teenager, played for the San Francisco Seals in the Pacific Coast League from 1932 to 1935. Hannah, with the Los Angeles Angels, played against him often. Prior to DiMaggio's debut with the Yankees in 1936, a sportswriter asked the former big leaguer for his scouting report on DiMaggio. "They'll be comparing him to Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper and those fellows in a year or two," Hannah said. Truck was right: Speaker and Hooper were both Hall of Fame outfielders, and of course, so was the Yankee Clipper.
  
• In 1936, Hannah was a playecoach for the Los Angeles Angels. Ted Williams, already a legendary hitter (and pitcher) from his exploits at Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego, was being courted by both major and minor league teams. Ted's father, Sam Williams, was acting as his agent, and he arranged a meeting with Truck Hannah to talk about a contract with the Angels. "When my dad went down to talk to him, Hannah said, 'Where's the kid?'" Williams later recalled. "Dad says, 'He's not here.' Hannah said, 'Well, for crying out loud, go get him. He's the one I want to talk to, not you!'" Insulted, Sam Williams walked away. Instead, Williams -- after turning down offers from the Yankees and the Cardinals -- signed with the newly formed San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League. Had he signed with the Angels, Williams likely would have been a Cub, as they were a Chicago affiliate. (But Williams, a San Diego native, likely would have signed with the Padres even if Hannah had made a better impression.)
  
• Hannah's mouth almost cost his team another teenaged prospect. In 1934, 16-year-old Steve Mesner went to an open try-out for the Los Angeles Angels, and Hannah was helping to evaluate the prospects. He took one look at Mesner and shouted, "Get out of here, kid! You're too little!" Mesner started walking off the field, but someone told him to go back. During batting practice, he hit three balls over the fence! During a fielding drill, he was handling every chance, and the coach kept hitting them harder and harder, expecting the teenager to boot one. He didn't, and the team gave him a contract. Mesner hit .328 in three years with the Angels before going to the Chicago Cubs and later the Cincinnati Reds.
  
• The winter of 1918-1919 was gripped by the "Spanish Flu" epidemic and, in a scene that would be familiar to all of us today, the players, umpires, and fans in a Southern California winter league wore face masks during the game. A photo ran in the newspaper with the catcher misidentified in the caption as "Trash" Hannah of the New York Yankees!
  
• Hannah is a member of the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame. Some sources say he was an inaugural member when it was created in 1943; other sources say he was inducted in 1950. Other notable Yankees in the PCL HoF include Frankie Crosetti, Joe DiMaggio, and Casey Stengel.
  
• Hannah's daughter, U.S. Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant Helen Hannah Campbell, went to Whittier High School with Richard Nixon, and later served as a docent the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, California. Richard Nixon, who grew up watching Hannah as a player and manager in the Pacific Coast League, said in a 1983 interview: "I remember Truck Hannah. He was a great catcher and could hit."
  
• In 1925, Hannah helped organize the Association of Professional Ball Players of America, created to assist former professional baseball players who are injured, elderly, or destitute. The APBPA is still in existence today!
  

Near the end of his career, Truck Hannah was interviewed about the rigors of being a catcher. He said during his 30 years in baseball he'd broken every finger on his right hand at least twice. "What the hell, it's all part of the game," he said. "It sure was fun while it lasted. Even with busted hands and fingers and everything else, I wouldn't have missed it for the world."
