2023.03.29 17:42 Impossible_Coyote_30 she did/does not care because she is getting what she wants

I am divorced now after 30 years. I read somewhere that the clinical definition of a dead bedroom is less than 10 times a year. We were unlucky to only have sex 1-3 times a year for 30 years. There were times I went without affection for several years. She broke me. I am a broken man with no ego left. I entered the relationship in great shape, ready to take on the world, I had high self-esteem and liked myself. When I was kicked to the curve 4 years ago, I was a physical and mental wreck. 4 years later, I am happier, have money in the bank, dating (wow! it has changed a lot!) and am living in my house. I am happier now than when I was married, but I hate being bitter and need it gone from my mind. How have others (men and women) forgiven and not be bitter. If I am going to have a good happy life, I need to move on, but I am being held back by what she did to me.
How can a person say they love you and care about you and then spend 30 years saying no, no, no, no, basically depriving the other partner of love, affection, and intimacy. She had to see me struggling and had to have some idea what she was doing to me. How can she look at herself in the mirror and say I tried my best. Sorry, 4 years post-divorce and I am still just a touch bitter.
Want to know the crazy part, I still love her. God, I am pathetic.

2023.03.29 17:42 Weird_Bumblebee7558 How my mom was there for me as a child

I'm processing something and needed somewhere to share. If you read, thank you for taking the time to see me. I was considering what it might feel like to ask my mom to share a time that she helped me through something as a child. I don't have memories of this, and I was wondering what her perspective of it would be. Then a memory hit me.
When I was in the 8th grade, my class had just moved up to a new school. My best friend since kindergarten fairly quickly abandoned me and our other best friend that we had known since the 4th grade. She moved on to hanging out with the popular girls and basically ignored us. It hurt. On our own, we chose to talk to her about it. With all the maturity of 13 year olds, we didn't say no to another friend who wanted to come for the walk with us, so we definitely confronted her about this poorly, having a third party present for it.
Afterwards, her mom was driving us to practice a few days later, and for the whole 15-20 minute drive with us trapped in the car with her, she berated us for confronting her daughter about this. She made us feel like absolute crap for standing up for ourselves and calling her daughter out for abandoning us, rather than compassionately pointing out that we went about it without sensitivity, and that perhaps it was ok to let the friendship go. And then she basically finished off the lecture with a sentiment that we needed to just be her daughter's friend and apologize for what we did.
My mom's response to this whole mess? "Kill her with kindness!" She had me buy her a "nice" birthday gift and give it to her anyways. By the way, this gift was my mom's favourite scented body wash and lotion at the time.
I don't remember her holding space for how it feels to have a friend do that to you. Or teaching a valuable lesson that people come and go in our lives, or that we owe it to ourselves to expect to be treated well and should let people go when they treat us like this. The whole fiasco had been made worse by people pleasing behavior (not being able to say no to the other friend who wanted to come for the walk), and my mom's solution was... More people pleasing. Just be really nice and maybe she'll like you again. If not, at least you know you were really nice!
My friend's mom had treated us abysmally by attacking us like that, and my mom did not stand up for me in any way. I don't remember her acknowledging how uncomfortable that must have been for us, or anything.
Ugh.
I'm realizing now that this is/was my mom's best way of having been there for me. She was trying to solve the problem in a way that took away my pain by getting everyone to like me again. Because that's how she'd want to solve it for herself.
It makes me sad for younger me, who was taught, again: - to make sure everyone likes me at all costs - that it's not ok to feel bad about something - that there isn't anything to learn from mistakes - that I don't deserve to be treated better by my friends - that it's ok to be shamed and berated by an adult when I make a mistake - that my mom doesn't have my back when I make a mistake

2023.03.29 17:42 Deathpacito-01 Lore-wise, how impressive is having a 20 in a stat, really?

Having a 20 in a stat is often sold as being a among the best of the best, a paragon among humanoids.
But at the same time it doesn’t really feel that much superior compared to, say, having a 10. IMO a character with 20 INT, for example, feels more like “decently smart” than “absolute genius”. On their stat checks, they’ll succeed 25% more often (so if a commoner succeeds 50% of the time, someone with 20 in the relevant stat would succeed 75% of the time, sans proficiency). Yeah, I know it’s the design principle 5e adopted, in lieu of the +80 roll modifiers of earlier editions (lmao), but still.
So yeah, when NPCs see a character with 20 in a stat, how would they usually react? Utterly in awe? Mildly impressed? What are your thoughts here?

2023.03.29 17:42 Jessakur I feel so overwhelmed at my job and its lack of structure

I work in IT as a specialist - largely in a risk related sub discipline - and I’m a systems thinker. I have a nuanced understanding of interrelated functionality and implications of changing one thing - and how it will affect the whole.
I was hired as a specialist and an expert in my field. But others don’t understand what I’m saying and pretend they understand things they clearly don’t. I’m so completely overwhelmed because I feel misunderstood constantly. They just want a quick check mark and I see the complexity of it all.
I try to address the misunderstandings and attempt to bring it up a level with documentation to summarize this information in plain language. I try to provide definitions, make relationships visual. I connect things to IT-accepted models and frameworks. I reference best practices and standards, as well as policy. I’ve created project plans, I’ve found similar examples in other institutions. It takes so much effort for me to create this structure and it is exhausting.
On top of it, my job is poorly defined and my team’s role is also. I’ve pointed this out numerous times, and again, tried to make documentation to address it.
It’s to the point where I’ve started rage creating presentations out of anxiety, trying to resolve the issues, ambiguity, and misunderstandings. But they continue to not be resolved, and it feels like others don’t want to do the work or want it resolved. Or they like the ambiguity? It makes me feel insane.
I feel like I’m going up a hill and am starting to burn out. I’ve started to interrupt people more, I fidget with items in meetings, and the ambiguity and lack of structure makes me spiral and feel hopeless.
I am not sure how to address these feelings of overwhelm and structure, as a non-management employee. I really care about what I’m doing and want to make it work. Any suggestions or ways of relating would be appreciated.

2023.03.29 17:42 just4747 [US-CT] [H] La Pavoni Europiccola Pre-Millennium (1996/97) Renewed, US Voltage/Plug Converted, Many Accessories [W] PayPal

Please read everything!!

PHOTOS: https://imgur.com/a/aJwgCsT

Regrettably, I am selling my beloved renewed and upgraded 1996/1997 Pre-Millennium La Pavoni Europiccola & all accessories. All refurbishing/renewing and upgrades done by @max.macchina.a.leva (on Instagram) from Munich, Germany - a well known and really great refurbishereseller of Italian lever machines. Machine was purchased by myself from him. The machine is an all original single-switch 1996 Europiccola (electronics/internals/boiler) but has a 1997 (original) black sparkly base due to the original being rusted I believe (it says "Genn. 1997" sticker inside the base in the photos, aka January of 1997.). Max stated that this 1996 machine is a better quality year for the Europiccola, with all brass parts, and it has the smaller 49mm grouphead.

The machine is fully working and working well. I haven't had any issues or problems in my time using it. Nothing is broken/worn or needing replacement as most parts have been renewed or replaced. No leaks and no sight glass cracks. I was able to make good espresso pretty easily after a small learning curve on it. It is renewed with new gaskets and new bolts/screws (including lever bolt kit). Heating element has been fully converted to a US-compatible 110/120 volt one and it has a grounded US plug wired in, so it will work immediately with any normal American home outlet. No modifications needed. I tried to get plenty of photos of it in different lighting to show the condition from all angles. Other than the chrome boiler not being completely polished up and scratch-free (which is doable, just not something I am capable of), the machine is in very good physical condition all around.

Everything you need to use the machine (and then some) included - more below. I purchased the machine from Max back in July of 2021 and I have literally only used it approximately 20-30 times total (unfortunately). I need to sell due to lack of time for using it and I could also use the funds.
I descaled the machine a little while after I first got it using the recommended Urnex Liquid Dezcal Descaler. It has barely been used since that time so I would still consider it descaled.

Everything included can be seen in the photos.
Sale includes ALL of the below:

Shipping: Machine is already packed up (extremely well) and ready to ship. Can provide potential buyers a UPS quote pretty much right away. Will check against FedEx as well but UPS Ground w/ insurance is likely the best price right now.
Machine ships from where I live in CT. I will ship everything, insurance & with tracking to any of the US-48 states.

Price: I am looking to get $850 $830 plus TBD shipping cost (will depend on buyer location once I know). U.S. buyers and PayPal only please. Goods & Services payment only (I would be willing to split the final PayPal G&S fee with the buyer).
Price is based on what I originally paid for the machine and its renewal/upgrades, accessories, etc (and reduced for the conversion rate changes and the overseas shipping/insurance/payment fees that I originally paid, etc...)

References/Feedback: For references/history, I have sold items in a few espresso/coffee Facebook groups (La Pavoni Lever Machine Owners, Home Espresso Aficionados, and Used Coffee Equipment USA), on reddit in the coffeeswap subreddit, on eBay under the ID guts311 (I have 495 all positive feedback reviews), and also on Etsy under the Store name JTSellsCrafts.

Please message me for any questions or if you are interested in purchasing. Thanks for looking!

2023.03.29 17:42 modahamburger Descale Reneka Viva

Hi all,
I got a (used) Reneka Viva S 710. Been using for about 2 years. But I am afraid she is heavily scaled up. For instance the drain valve seems to be completely blocked from the boiler.
I am pondering to take boiler and heat exchanger apart, order new gaskets, and descale (separated by material) all parts in amidosulfonic acid.
Question: Am scared that when putting all together she will leak. What was your experience?
I am not too bad with tools.
Thanks.

2023.03.29 17:42 mypaperboatsank My boyfriend calls me fat

Hey so I am a high school student(16F) working on getting into a medical College, and so is my bf (18M), I have 10 hours of class+4-5 hours of studying and hw whereas,he has a different program and is currently on break, before starting 12th grade and he has online school, even when offline it was 4 hours only. He doesn't work out, but I do in my free time but due to inconsistency and lack of time,I can't lose weight. We were in a happy relationship for 6 months, then things took a toxic turn. He started mentioning what girls he finds cute all 'as a joke'. He said I should be comfortable enough with him to not take everything he says seriously. I am 5'4, 65 Kgs (130 pounds) which would be 4 pounds overweight maybe and I am in descent shape, a bit of belly going on, alongwith love handles. He is skinny, 5'9, average looking guy who has had a crush on me for 3 years before I finally said yes, I didn't know he had a crush on me before. He called me sexy and I said thank you. But he made a comment on how he loves my body, and that my chubbiness attracts him, but asked me to lose belly fat. I ignored it and it didn't come up until 6 months in. He said I had a belly, calls me fat 'as a joke', says I shouldn't feel bad about getting called that since he loves me anyways whether I be fat or skinny, and is just teasing me. He said my ass was flat, which is not (not my opinion but other friends both male and female said it wasn't), he is used to seeing bbl girls and refuses to believe when I say so. He asked me to show him my belly and then made a disgusted expression saying "How fat are you", I have told him that if he wants a skinny girl he can go date one but says they're too flat for his liking, yet drools over skinny models. He will also show me pictures of other girls on Instagram (influencers) and say they look cute 'as a joke'. One thing that I'd like to mention is that he never got asked out by girls and, I always had boys obsessed over me but I ignored them all for him, because he was really respectful and kind. He will also say how he loves chubby girls and look at them on Instagram. I snooped around his texts (I know I shouldn't have), I saw him commenting on some gamer girl's body, asking his friend to go check out her stream and look at her figure. He doesn't talk to girls in real life apart from me but I don't know how to move forward. Am I overreacting or am I reasonable?

2023.03.29 17:42 FluffiCatfish Coma with field flattener

So I had an accident with my TPO ultrawide triplet and the lens chipped, but luckily it was on the very edge of the lens and doesn’t show up in my shots. What I think I may have messed up is that when I went to remove the chipped piece and inspect the elements for any other damage, I not am having coma in the edges of my frames. Could it be that when I put the elements back together that I misaligned them? I am very novice with telescopes and I’m worried I ruined my lens by taking it apart. Any info that may help or suggestions on what I can do to fix it is appreciated

2023.03.29 17:41 DPVaughan Book Review: 36 Streets by T.R. Napper

Today I’ll be reviewing the 2022 cyberpunk book 36 Streets by T.R. Napper.
DISCLAIMER: In the interest of full disclosure, the author of this book and I are both part of the same writer's guild, and I attended his book launch for 36 Streets last year.
The author, T.R. Napper is an Australian man who's had an interesting career prior to becoming an author: he was a diplomat and aid worker who delivered humanitarian programs in Southeast Asia, East Asia and Mongolia. But specifically relevant to this book, which is set in Vietnam, he lived in Hanoi for three years. He's won several awards, has had his works published in science fiction and speculative fiction magazines and received a creative writing doctorate with the thesis: Noir, Cyberpunk and Asian Modernity, all themes explored in this book. If you'd like to know more, his website is http://nappertime.com/ .
36 Streets is the debut novel of T.R. Napper. The book is an adult cyberpunk novel set in a dystopian future where Vietnam, or the north of it at least, has fallen under Chinese military rule. The eponymous 36 Streets is another name for the Old Quarter of Hanoi, where the Chinese authorities generally stay out and allow a Vietnamese crime gang to maintain order. The story deals heavily with the concept of memory, and the reliability or otherwise of it, in a world with ubiquitous neutral interfaces and hyperrealistic virtual reality.
The protagonist is Lin Thi Vun, a young woman who was born in Vietnam but grew up in Australia. Even though she speaks the language of her country of birth, her English is more natural and she doesn't trust her own Vietnamese language expertise and hasn't mastered a local accent. She feels self-conscious and like an outsider: she never felt truly Australian, but she doesn't really feel Vietnamese either. She's caught between worlds. Lin has worked her way up through the ranks of the criminal organisation that runs the 36 Streets, and spends her downtime getting drunk, high and picking up bar girls. She struggles with the murky morality of some of the jobs she has to do, not so much the breaking of kneecaps types of things, but like the job we see her doing in the opening chapter, of catching a member of the resistance against the Chinese occupation and handing him over to the Chinese authorities for the bounty which doesn't sit right with her.
The main thrust of the story kicks off when Lin is tasked by her boss to act as a private investigator and meet with a wealthy foreign businessman, the Englishman Herbert Molayson, who doesn't trust the official story of what happened to his two friends and business partners: one whose death was explained away too conveniently by the authorities for him to trust, and one who's gone missing and who no one can find any trace of. Lin chasing down leads and pulling on this thread, like an old-school hard-drinking noir detective, is what gets her involved in a conspiracy involving the regime and mega-corporations, a conspiracy that even learning about can lead to deadly consequences.
This book was great. Especially once the main private eye mystery arc began, I was hooked. I really can't understate how much I enjoyed the private investigation aspects of this story. I really enjoyed the pompous but shrewd Englishman Herbert Molayson who commissioned Lin to find his friend. However, I enjoyed the much rougher Hermann Hebb even more by comparison. Lin herself is an enjoyable protagonist to spend time with, although I'd be terrified to meet her in person. She's a flawed character who pushes people away and engages in self-destructive behaviour (like smoking, getting routinely blackout drunk and her addiction to the drug ice-seven), but when threatened doesn't back down or go down without a hell of a fight, even if she's outgunned. One thing I particularly enjoyed was that the first act we see her take, stunning and capturing a resistance member for a bounty, she almost completely screws up. She catches him, alright, but her nerves are on-edge because of her ice-seven addiction and instead of taking him down cleanly she misfires her stun gun and has to engage in hand-to-hand combat to get the job done, getting seriously injured in the process.
Having been to Vietnam on holiday, I could almost feel and smell the air of the streets as depicted by Napper in the book. It's probably a setting that is underexplored in English-language literature, especially in the cyberpunk genre. Other things I appreciated was that Lin, quite realistically, doesn't even start the book carrying a firearm: she's dangerous enough with a knife and stun gun. The technology of the world feels very feasible, like it's just out of reach of today's technological capabilities. The depiction of cybernetics are awesome (with a lot of information given via on-retinal display, for example). Little touches in the details show that this is a future where climate change has bitten in, with frequent mentions of vat-grown beef (as opposed to from cows on farmland), faux-wood tables and flexiscreens.
While the story overwhelmingly takes place within Vietnam, occasionally there are peeks and hints of just how dystopian the outside world has become: a mention of the "former" United States of America, Australia's gone full xenophobia like it's full of One Nation voters, Britain's described as "a despotic island off the coast of Europe", Pakistan appears to be a theocracy now, and so on. I haven't mentioned the virtual reality game that the investigation centres around, a re-creation of the Vietnam War from the perspective of an American soldier, and where the player always loses by being brutally killed) because that's best left to be explored in the book itself.
Pulling back from the details to a more meta perspective, the chapters were refreshingly short, which gave the book a quick pace. I never realised how much I love short chapters until I read this book. There was a flashback that the author held back until its reveal was perfectly timed in the plot. The violence is gritty and visceral, and the author is not shy about killing off named characters in the most brutal ways possible. For example, there's an antagonist with a BROADSWORD who is so violent and effective that it's terrifying any time he makes an appearance. The ending of the book felt very satisfying, and Lin makes a decision I didn't expect her to at the end.
Would I recommend this book? Of course! In fact, on Reddit alone I've recommended the book around 20 times. Well, once I’ve posted this review everywhere, it’ll be closer to 30 or 40 times.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for any combination of the following elements:
In summary, this book was a brutally visceral read and is such a shining example of the cyberpunk genre. It makes me think I need to read more cyberpunk, a genre I'd never actively sought out before, and if only because of that, I strongly recommend it.
And one final thought to leave on: As I neared the end of the book, I became painfully aware that I was going to miss Lin checking the time or reading messages via her on-retinal display when I moved onto other books. Especially given I normally read fantasy books, I knew I was really going to miss those little touches. I think that when I’m pre-emptively realising I’m going to miss an aspect of a book once I’ve finished reading it … well, that tells me I enjoyed it quite a bit. Easily one of the best books I’ve read in years.
Oh, and it has a glowing endorsement from Richard Morgan (author of Altered Carbon) on the front cover, in case that’s something you might find interesting.

2023.03.29 17:41 MightBeneficial3302 Award Winning Canadian Tech Leader and Recent 69% Winner ShiftCarbon Inc. (CSE: SHFT, OTC PINK: SHIFF) Released Blockbuster $5 Million USD Revenue News

Award Winning Canadian Tech Leader and Recent 69% Winner ShiftCarbon Inc. (CSE: SHFT, OTC PINK: SHIFF) Released Blockbuster $5 Million USD Revenue News
Hello Traders,
Earlier this year we introduced members to a little-known Canadian gem that is considered a “global leader” in its high-growth tech sector. Over the following 2 weeks it saw an impressive climb:
  • $0.065 in mid-February @ time of SCC Report
  • High of 0.11 by March 3rd
That’s a real 69% gain! Since our report CSE: SHFT announced two major news releases, including a blockbuster $5 Millionannouncement with a $2.3 Billion per year IT giant. To put this in perspective, SHFT’s market cap is only $3.6 Million! And they just announced a project with a multi-billion company that is estimated to bring in $5 Million+ in revenue. Let’s look at the two recent press releases:
  1. *SHFT announced its first revenue-generating engagement with Solutions by STC. “*The first phase of revenue from this project is estimated to be US$5 million with the potential for additional revenue in the form of a long-term supply of goods as the smart city becomes operational.” Solutions by STC reported revenue of $2.3 Billion in 2022
  2. Earlier this month SHFT announced the launch of a new cloud platform designed for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) automation of carbon offset projects.
According to the World Bank, “Digital MRV will be a game changer!” CSE: SHFT processed 5.5 Billion data points in 2021 alone!
  • Customers in 100 countries
  • SHFT already has 50 Large Enterprise Customers
SHFT has already won several international awards:

And SHFT is already well positioned with massive clients and partnerships with:
  • Fortune 500 Tech Companies
  • National Governments
  • Large-Scale Venues
SHFT is “Trusted by businesses in 100+ countries” including:

  • Hockey Canada, Telus, TD Garden, Micron, Royal Caribbean, the CFL, Singapore's Ministry of Health, and Viking.
And considering the trends in the market, things could get even better for CSE: SHFT. Perhaps best of all, this company is operating in an industry that is expected to see massive growth over the next several years:
  • The voluntary carbon offset market was worth nearly $2 Billion in 2021 and will grow to $10-40 Billion in value by 2030 according to a report co-authored by Shell and Boston Consulting Group
And:
  • Climate tech is experiencing explosive growth, with US venture capital investment in the sector increasing by 80% between 2020 and 2021 to reach $56 billion.
Keep in mind: 49 countries and 93 Fortune 500 companies have committed to net zero emission targets, and many analysts believe these numbers will only grow.
And if those number do grow then CSE: SHFT could be in the perfect position to capitalize as they are firmly established. As mentioned above, SHFT has already won several international awards for their technologies:
  • Winner at 2022 SBR Technology Excellence Awards
  • Winner of Singapore National Innovation Challenge
  • Winner at TIA Technology Impact Awards 2021
  • Winner at WSH Asia Awards 2022
We’ve already said a lot so let’s step back for a minute so that we can better introduce you to today’s featured company you’ll want to keep your eyes on ShiftCarbon Inc. (CSE: SHFT) this week.

2023.03.29 17:41 R2CEE2 Nike Fanboy Rotation?

Howdy everyone! I'm trying to get more into running and decided to splurge on a rotation, and was hoping to get peoples input. I'm a huge Nike guy, mostly because they gave a us a ton of free stuff in college, so if at all preferable I'd like to stick with them. That being said, if there is a shoe that absolutely smokes everything, I would be open to it.
From what I understand a rotation consists of-
  1. Daily Trainer (0-10?) - Pegasus 39
  2. Tempo Trainer (3-4 miles) - VaporFly2
  3. Recovery Run (3-10+miles) - Invincible 3
  4. Track Workouts (0m-1600m?) - Dragonfly
I know the pegasus doesn't have the zoomX foam, do I need to upgrade it? Assuming money isn't an issue what would be the best daily trainer I could get away with? Do I need to get a Zoom Fly or a Tempo for daily trainespeed session? Also, if I have any of the run types wrong, please let me know what I am missing. I'm just using the Strava Pro app for training.
I would love any advice, or any additional shoes that I need to add in my rotation. I'm 225lbs, run a consistent 43ish min 10k, and all the running I do is on straight roads.
Thank you!

2023.03.29 17:41 KnownPotential1 How to flatten fiber prints with a dry mount heat press?

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here. Google isn't understanding what I'm asking, so here I am 📷 I have hundreds of silver halide photo prints on fiber paper with various degrees of curling, ranging from a few edge ripples to entirely cylindrical from being stored rolled up. I do not need or want to mount them on anything, just flatten them. The biggest prints are 16"x20". My questions are as follows: - Can a dry mount heat press be used for this purpose — and if so, what settings would be best? - Is there a difference between the heat presses used for heat transfer prints on clothing, mugs, etc, vs. the ones specifically for photo prints? - What brand machines are best for this purpose and what features would you recommend I should look for as helpful for such a large task? TIA for any guidance someone can give!

2023.03.29 17:41 IrishLass_55 Civility at meetings

Small Florida SFH HOA with 40 parcels: Do you have any recommendations or best practices to ensure civility in communications via email, at board and membership meetings? Our HOA is faced with several challenges and lots of differing opinions about how to proceed. Recently emails have been flying with ad hominem attacks and curse words. There is real concern that the people who have stepped up to help will step down and the HOA will eventually become stuck. We want to do the right things for our community but it is not a good situation when this happens and we are afraid it may get even worse.

Hey there!
I'm looking to talk to someone to help the quiet moments between work tasks/zoom meetings. I'm at my desk a lot, and my ADHD loves the notifications of people reaching out, continuing convos, etc. I just got back after a couple of weeks out of the country for work and the need to procrastinate is at an all time high!

Book Review: 36 Streets by T.R.

  • A cyberpunk book
  • A sci-fi book
  • A private eye / noir-like / mystery book
  • A standalone book (not part of a series)
  • Book with a culturally complex and bilingual protagonist (grew up with two different cultures)
  • Book written by an Australian
  • Book with a female protagonist
  • Book with a gay protagonist
  • Book set in Vietnam
  • Book set in an urban environment
  • Book set in a gritty future
  • Book for an adult audience

2023.03.29 17:40 ArtsyKitty How to get any type of “closure” if there was no funeral

My absolute best friend and my found family was killed back in 2021. I don’t have family so him dying was one of the worst events I’ve ever experienced. He was also very very young (27).
Anyways, his parents are vile, evil monsters and refused to even claim his body. I want to try to know if there’s a way I could claim it but I don’t know how that works at all. So of course there was no funeral or anything. I’ve been in extensive therapy for this but I feel so so lost without him here. I’ve always wanted to try to get some type of “closure” (if that’s even a real thing). What are some ways y’all have found closure for your loved ones passing?

2023.03.29 17:40 Dreidhen Anirvachaniya - Akhyativada - Pramanyavada

The Sage tells us here that the real Consciousness is beyond time and therefore neither rises nor sets. It is like the sun, which — relative to the earth — does not move; the sunrise and sunset we speak of are due to the movements of the earth. So too the Reality shines constantly; the rising and setting of the ego are ascribed to it. The ego-sense is discontinuous; it rises and sets. Apart from the ego-sense there is no individual soul. It shines during waking and in dream, and sets in sleep. This little self is therefore not to be identified with the Reality. Nor can it be identified with the inert body.
What then is this little self? The Sage tells us here that it is a hypothetical being, a chimera of the mind, compounded of the light of Consciousness and the body. These two utterly unlike things are confused together; the result is this incongruous being called the individual soul, which says, I am so-and-so'. Because of the light of Consciousness associated with it, it appears conscious; but at the same time it is indistinguishable from the body, which has no consciousness of its own. Because of the two incongruous elements of which it is composed, it is described as the knot between the Reality — the Self — and the body. That is why the little self is manifest as the ego-sense, which has the form of the thought I am this body'. The body thus identified as the self is not always the physical body; sometimes the mind, which is only a subtler kind of body, takes its place and then the sense of selfhood is restricted to the mind for a time.
Now, the thought I am this body' is the primary thought. It is like a thread on which all the other thoughts are strung. Hence the ego is indistinguishable from the mind. In fact the mind is but an expanded form of the ego. Hence the Sage tells us that the mind and the subtle body are the same as this hypothetical little self, which is no other than the ego. Conversely we can say that the little self is not other than these. We thus learn that the so-called soul is nothing but the ego, which is due to a confusion of two elements which are distinct and can never mix, because one of them — the body — is non-existent, being a mere mental image. There can be a real mixture only if both the elements be real. The mixing up of the two, explains the Sage, is like a marriage contracted by a bachelor in a dream, where the bridegroom is real, but the bride is not; when the dreamer awakes, he finds himself as much a bachelor as before. Hence the real Self who is the Reality — did not really become limited; He never really became the soul or little self; He was not really married to the body. Thus it is made clear that the individual soul has no real existence.
All those questions that relate to that soul are meaningless, because they assume the existence of a soul. There is only one real Self, the Pure Consciousness, which is beyond time. We shall see later on why He is described as Consciousness, and not as conscious; we shall then see that there is a fundamental difference between the two descriptions. Since the mind has no existence apart from this spurious entity, the ego, it follows that all the creations of the mind, including ignorance and bondage, and the consequent conditioned existence consisting of enjoyment and suffering — which we call 'life' — are outgrowths of the ego, and partake of its unreality. That ignorance is unreal will be seen later on.
That this teaching is correct will be clear to us if we look at the facts without bias.8look at the facts without bias. By the most careful analysis of the whole of our past experience we can find no proof of an individual soul other than the ego. The ego itself is just the primary ignorance, the recognition of which is the starting point of our inquiry. It is here shown that it is an imaginary entity being a compound of two un-compoundable elements. Thus the whole of this conditioned existence, which we call life, is founded on this lie, the individual soul. It is natural therefore that life should be full of lies, and therefore full of disappointments. This teaching may be difficult to grasp. But it is the fundamental truth as taught by the ancient lore.
There can be no correct understanding of the ancient lore, if this teaching be not accepted. So long as the notion of individuality is retained, all philosophical inquiries are bound to prove useless; for they cannot lead us out of the primary ignorance. This was clearly taught by the Sage Sankara as follows: "Only so long as there is identification (effected by the mind) of the real Self with the intellect is there an appearance of individuality and of conditioned existence for that Self. But in reality there is no such being as the individual soul, other than the spurious entity imagined by the intellect. In the study of the Vedanta we do not find (support for the existence of) any conscious entity having an existence of its own, apart from the Supreme Being, who is ever-free and all-knowing; the sacred texts say: 'There is no seer, hearer, thinker or knower apart from this Being'; 'There is none but He, that sees, hears, thinks or knows'; 'Thou art That'; I am the Reality'; these and hundreds of other texts are our authorities."
The ego is the only source of all our life-experiences; they are what they are because of the ego. We say, I am so- and-so', I am a doer of actions', I am happy', 'I am miserable', and so on. In every single thought we can find this I am’. It is in fact the common factor of all thoughts without exception. No thought can arise, which does not contain this I am’. But this I am' is not a property of the mind; so we learn from the Sage and from Upanishadic Lore. We are told that this I am' is the Light of the real Self. That Self being infinite and unqualified, this I am' is not really the little thing we take it to be. And we take it to be limited, imperfect and bound to the wheel of pleasure and pain, only the individual soul being unreal, it follows that there is no perceiver of the world. This may be surprising; but it need not be so.
The seer and his spectacle are inseparable; they are like the two ends of a single stick; as a stick will always have two ends, so every perception involves the two, the seer and his spectacle. The three, namely the seer, the spectacle and the relation of seeing form a triad, of which the essential element is the seeing, which becomes possible by the light of Consciousness; by that light both the seer and the seen are manifested. It is not possible to attribute reality to the seer. The term 'Buddha' signifies 'a Sage.' while denying it to the spectacle. If we accept the view that the spectacle, namely the world, is unreal in any sense, then we must also accept the view that the seer of the world is unreal in the same sense and to the same extent. The spectator is in fact an integral part of the world; both in waking and in dream the spectator and the spectacle form one single whole, appearing and vanishing together.
