I ,25F, got mad on my 27F friend for not inviting me to the her wedding. A little context here:
We’ve known each other for 7 year, we have met through university, and since we are both dentists, we have been colleagues for 6 years. She is with her husband since 2012. She never had another realtionship besides him. She was always curious about other guys, and asking me about my dates. One time her now-husband came to her drunk and told her that she is nothing to him out of the blue and threw her in the streets. I took her in my home and talked to her, and told her that his behavior is not to be forgiven and she needs to reconsider her relationship. After that incident they got together and he started to be really toxic, he wouldn’t let her going out for coffee or going out to shopping with her friends and manipulated her up to the point where she asked him to marry her and she bought her own engagement ring even though he told her multiple times he does not want to marry. They didn’t have much money, but they lived decent. She was really worried that she reached 24 years and she will never find anybody else, and really wanted a family. We have been through ups and downs, always been there for here, whenever she had a fight with her now husband and tried to be that friend you could call anytime you have a problem and come get you. I have met her mom talked with her regulary and even had coffee sometimes. We had each other backs, non-stop. She had always talked about how I am her best friend and she can’t wait to attend each others weddings and being godmothers to each others children. Right before finishing our degree she was always worried that we wouldn’t stay in touch and she was upset. After we ended our degree I have reached out multiple times and talked to her, but she reach too little or at all. She was stressed with having an important exam to become a specialist in a certain field. I let her concentrate so I wouldn’t stress her, but I made sure to let her know if she needs anything to reach me I will be there for her. After she took the exam we still talked rarely and I thought she was upset with something I had done (didn’t know what though) and I asked her and she told me that she had a miscarriage and was really upset. I comforted her a lot and after a few months we were finally able to see each other in person. We were in different parts of the country. I asked her if she decided on a wedding date since I knew she was engaged for 3 years and wanted a May 2023 wedding. She told me she doesn’t have the money and it’s not a priority for her right now. I told her then whenever she will have it, i will be there for her, as we have told each other multiple time. This was 2 months ago. About a month ago she posted like a save the day post, that she later deleted it and when I asked about it she left me on seen. Last night I was scrolling on instagram and saw a photo with her in a wedding dress with his husband and their first dance. I felt really broken and upset since she lied to me about not having her wedding. I send her a message of congratulations to her and his now-husband and she only replied with “😊” not even a thank you. I was absolutely shocked… i had no words, and got really mad and unfollowed her on instagram. I don’t want to be friends with someone who can only receive and not give back…am i a bad person for unfriend her?
P.S. We are not americans, we are from a country in Europe, and Dentistry and medical school lasts 6 years.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of becoming a soldier in the King’s Army. Not for the honor or glory, but because I’m desperate to know how it feels to kill a man.
Unfortunately, God did not bless me with strength or athletic prowess. I knew I’d never be a good soldier. Instead I attended the Royal University, and graduated at the top of my class. I would become an engineer, and develop siege weapons for the King’s Army, so I could kill indirectly.
When I was summoned before the King’s Council, I knew they were going to make me a Royal Engineer for the Army. My dream was about to come true.
Instead, the Council assigned me, “a much more important role.”
Royal Engineer in Charge of Sewage.
Villages were having trouble digging latrines, and a few of their fancier Inns needed Outhouses constructed. It was my job, as ordered by the King, to help the common folk shit and piss without fear of disease.
What did I do to offend God so?
I would have refused, but defying the King was unwise (he’d behead you).
Begrudgingly, I accepted the position, and journeyed to the first village in need of my help.
Every member of this village was either inbred, drunk, or a fool. When I met the owner of the Inn, I found him to be all three.
He met me outside the Inn with a shit-eating grin, and politely greeted me as, “His Majesty’s Shit Shoveler.”
He walked me through the Inn, introducing me to every customer.
“The Royal Shit Shoveler has come to visit!” He said. “This man works for the King! Best Shit Shoveler in all the land!”
Every. Single. Person. Laughed.
One man laughed so hard he couldn’t breath and fell over and hit his head, which made everyone else laugh even harder. Everybody thought the Innkeeper was fucking hilarious.
I’d show them.
I gathered my materials and built an Outhouse for the Innkeeper, but I made sure to carve numerous holes in the ceiling.
When the Innkeeper inquired about the holes, I said they were for ventilation, so it wouldn’t stink in there.
“You really are a Shit Expert!” He said.
Idiot.
The thing about Outhouses is that they need to be airtight.
Why?
Because otherwise flies will get in. Flies will lay eggs in the shit. The eggs will hatch in the shit. And when they grow wings they’ll fly out of the shit in search of food.
The Inn has a mighty fine menu. The flies won’t be able to resist. When those flies land on the Innkeepers delicious, hot food, bits of that shit will land there too.
Every person who eats at the Inn will get sick and die, and not know why.
But I’ll know. They’re going to die because they’re shoveling shit into their mouths.
It seems I’ll get to fulfill my dream of killing after all, just not in the way I expected!

Weird feeling. I remember several years ago being mega-excited by the AMSP hype train, collecting and listening to all of Radiohead's music on repeat, writing posts with theories and even Radiohead-themed nightmares here on Reddit, and generally feeling awesome while doing anything Radiohead-related. That lasted for quite some time, and even as my musical tastes expanded constantly and I went on through life (finished high school, got into university) I still remained a Radiohead fanboy. Then I don't quite remember what happened musically in my life for the next few years, I just continued listening to my playlist and whatever new good stuff I randomly found and got recommended by friends. Then a few weeks ago I noticed that I rarely play any of my Radiohead records/files anymore, and decided to give the entire discography a listen. Yes, great music, monumental even, in different ways over different albums. But somehow I didn't feel any connection or any feeling of being engulfed by the music like I used to back in the day. And what made me kind of sad, after listening to the 9 albums + My Iron Lung + Not Ok 2017 (all of which i own) I didn't feel like I wanted to listen to any of them again anytime soon.
I legitimately would love to experience Radiohead in a similar way to how I used to in 2015-2019 (I guess that's when Radiohead started "fading out" for me) — just being purely amazed and enthralled by every track and every piece of lore and trivia behind them, but I just don't feel that rush of emotion and interest anymore, and I don't know why. And again, I am NOT saying that the music is bad. It is very well written and performed, loaded full of emotional value, and has interesting backstories. But, is outgrowing such a timeless band like Radiohead and its fandom even a possible thing? Did anyone here have a similar experience to mine?

This is the 3rd post in a series going over the bowl seasons from 1974-1997. Each year I'm examining the bowls with national title implications and the teams competing for the #1 ranking. If you want to catch up on prior seasons, check out the link to the master post as well!
Editors note: I'm changing the title from "Bowls and the Race for the Mythical National Championship to "The (insert year) Bowl Season" for simplicity.
Setting the Stage
Pre-Bowl rankings (1st place votes in parentheses)
Sugar Bowl: #1 Pittsburgh vs #5/4 Georgia (Jan 1st noon EST)
The path was clear and the stage was set for #1 Pitt. Take down SEC champ UGA and none of the other bowl games would matter as they would assuredly be a unanimous #1 in each poll. Lose and the Rose bowl, which kicked off 5 hours later, would become a de facto national title. I also wouldn't rule out Georgia getting some first place love in either poll as well. Suffice it to say, the Panthers made it simple for the voters. They jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and cruised to a 27-3 win, out gaining the Dawgs 480 to 181. The race for #1 was all over but the crying.
Cotton Bowl: #4/5 Maryland vs #6/7 Houston (Jan 1st, 4PM EST)
Like Arizona St the year before, I doubt Maryland had a real chance to claim a #1 spot in either poll with a win, even if Pitt lost. The voters most likely would crown one of the Rose Bowl blue bloods #1, but, a perfect season was a lot to play for. Unfortunately for them, Houston had other plans. The Cougars pounced on them and led 21-0 after 1 quarter. Maryland cut the lead to 27-21 mid 4th, but Houston iced the game with a late field goal to win 30-21.
Rose Bowl #2 Michigan vs #3 USC (Jan 1st 5PM)
It was a highly anticipated match up between the Big 10 and Pac 8 champions. The only thing that could make things more climactic was Pitt losing earlier in the day, opening the door for Michigan or USC to claim #1. Unfortunately by kick off, both teams knew they'd be playing for 2nd place. Michigan struck first in the 2nd to lead 6-0, but wouldn't score again. USC took a 7-6 lead before the half and another in the 4th to win 14-6.

Once in a blue moon, things work out pretty cleanly. As the nations lone unbeaten, 12-0 Pitt was an overwhelming #1 in both polls. No disrespect to USC, but its kind of an insult to Pitt that USC siphoned off 3 1st place votes in each poll. Props to USC for the 11 wins and Rose Bowl crown, but losing by 3 touchdowns to a bad Missouri team should have been enough to change those voters minds. Guess not.
Finally shout out to Rutgers. They went 11-0 as an independent but didn't get a bowl invite. They played an exceptionally light schedule, with 7 opponents that would eventually become IAA/FCS teams at the time (the FBS/FCS split didn't occur until 1978) and only 1 opponent finishing with a winning record. They finished the year #17 in each poll.

Basically what the title says. I have been studying for the past 4 weeks and was feeling really great until I took NBMEs 9 and 12. My scores are as follows:

I’m not trying to sound gunner-y but I am worried that my scores keep falling. I did over 2000 questions during this dedicated and I am seeing a bunch of new stuff on 9 and 12 that has me wondering if maybe I’ve just gotten lucky w the higher scores and I need to study more? My exam is in 8 days and unfortunately since I am trying to pursue something more competitive, I feel like a 260+ is kinda necessary. I would love some feedback. Thanks.

Fyi, this post is going to be long.
For context, my boyfriend and I have been dating for about a year now and we are due to have our second child in December of this year. Our first child is 18 months and she has my last name, you're probably wondering about the timeline because it doesn't makes sense. Well originally we had just hooked up back in early 2021 and we both went our separate ways. We're both military so it's easy do so.
Anyway, the first pregnancy I found out I was pregnant and honestly I didn't want to tell him at all for my own reasons. I did it all on my own until I was told by someone I had to tell him and I did. Originally he didn't want to do anything about it, which I was perfectly fine with. In the end he ended up stepping up and being a good dad, but again I was doing everything on my own while he sat on the other side of the world partying. Absolutely nothing I can do about it nor do I care to.
Fast forward, he gets seperated from the Military in February and he moves in with me. At this point we've been dating maybe 7 or 8 months.
I end up getting pregnant again, and yes we were using birth control encase anyone wants to be nosey.
He's under the impression that he can choose our second child's name and forge my signature on the paperwork, but that ain't gonna work. I don't know if he was joking or not but he seemed extremely angry when I told him no biblical names. I'm Jewish and he's catholic, I don't feel comfortable with it and he can't seem to get it through his head.
Anyway, a few days ago I asked him who's last name does he think the baby will have out of curiosity. He said "my last name of course, because you're all changing your last names." That's not happening, I told him I wouldn't be changing my last name nor would our daughter and my other baby will be having my last name as well. He tried to pull "but were a family we should all have the same last name." So I said yeah they will all have the same last name and he got extremely angry over it. I do understand how he feels on this, but I will not give another child who comes out of me a different last name then their sibling and I'm not changing my last name and nor is my first child.
We had a conversation about it before and he started screaming at me. He's also under the impression that I want to marry him, which isn't true. I've been married before, he's well aware, and I don't want to do it again. He seems to think I'm taking his last name, but I would never. I knight hyphenate but no.
When I suggested him taking my last name he said "I'll get made fun of, because I took a girls last name." Yeah okay buddy, after that I just told him what I said was final and to drop it.
I don't know how to deal with this, but it would be great to hear others advice. Just be aware I won't entertain them having different last names.

He, his mom, dad and siblings have been degrading me constantly in front of our kids to the point Daniel came home crying that dad said I didn't love him as much as his brother, and me having to get a restraining order against Robs brother (James 24m) due to his various insults and threats towards me.
Rob and his family are not happy, but all have stressed Sarah had no part in it, she was just a watcher of it going down, she never "joined in"
On to the pickle, so at 7 this morning I get a knock on the door. I didn't have any planned visitors so had no idea who it could be.
I opened the door to see a BAWLING Sarah on my steps. I was a bit skeptical as to why as she seemed upset with the court decision too. I know everyone said she never joined in, but how are you going to watch that happen and NOT say anything.
Against better judgement I did let her in the house and sat her down (she was a mess). Daniel was absolutely ecstatic to see her, Anthony was still sleeping.
We sat in silence for what seemed like hours. (Really only a few minutes, but anyone who's been in a situation like this before, knows the feeling)
Before I could say anything she immediately blurted out "I'm sorry" and she just started spewing everything.
From what I gathered, she was sorry she didn't stand up for me while it was happening, from what she's heard about me, she thought I was a "bitter woman" and "crazy" (Thanks Rob and James)
She said that after what happened in court she realized that I actually wasn't a bitter woman and she felt incredibly guilty for not doing anything. She didn't want to lose seeing the boys because she loved them dearly (they love her too, ALOT)
I thought I was speechless before and then, what I'm assuming was the true reason of the visit. She let's me know that she is in fact PREGNANT, and Rob isn't necessarily happy about it. They actually had gotten into a row about it last night.
I asked her why she came to my house, she said that, being pregnant and seeing what happened before, she is scared I won't allow her or her child to see the boys because of hers and their actions and she didn't know what to do as she needed to make a doctor's appointment as it was only confirmed on a store bought test.
She doesn't want to ask Rob, so she asked me for support. I don't know if I should help her. She watched as I got degraded by everyone but at the same time if she's keeping this baby, that baby is in fact my children's sibling.

2023.05.28 15:29 harmlesspea If I get, say, a BSc and MSc in a field of physics (relativistic, quantum or high-energy for example) from a university like Oxford or Imperial, what are some of the best non-entrepreneurial jobs I can get?
I know Cambridge is generally more typical for the natural sciences but I only get to apply to one of Oxbridge and I prefer Oxford wholly. Plus, I don't want to do a combined sciences course. What sort of jobs could I get with degrees like that thought?

I'm currently reading through a lot of ancient 1930s - 1960s comics for a university thing, and some of it is getting to be a little much.
Particularly this Metal Men series, which is about some Elon Musk nerd making a bunch of robots to respond to crime and natural disasters, sort of like a pre-puppy Paw Patrol. The Token Girl's whole deal is that because she's been programmed to respond "like a woman," she's constantly cravin' man and her emotional behaviour inconveniences the people around her. The running gag here is that Mr. Musk is constantly commenting that he should remove the part of her that gives her these emotions, sort of euphemistically alluding to lobotomy. The twist is that our girl, Platinum / Tina, is supposed to be the most powerful member of her team, but this is presented more like a joke, the idea there seemingly being that she could be so much more useful if not for having a fem brain.
I've read a lot of old -ist / -phobic media before but this one's getting to me, probably because I need to power through it and can't just put it down. There's also a lot worse out there, like I'm not exactly reading an incel manifesto (as much as it feels like one), so I feel like I'm being stupid about it, too.
So, aside from just venting about this shit, I thought I'd turn to the gals to see if anybody has some thoughts on how to compartmentalise this bs.

Why didn't I know this game existed sooner??? This is absolutely amazing! I've only played maybe 5 hours and I love it already. I think I'll be playing for a long time to come. I love the art, the setting, the game play. It's all awesome.
But I'm also very confused about what just happened. It took me a lot of searching to figure this out. Apparently I dived into the game and chose to play "Duviri" which is new content for this game - which is in a state of permanent ongoing development...? Maybe some long-term players haven't even seen this Duviri world yet?
So here I am playing the Duviri game, and I'm totally new, and so I'm thinking "OK, this is Warframe. I am experiencing Warframe and it's a lot of fun. It's a kinda sci-fi fantasy world and I'm flying around on a mechanical horse. Super cool!"
But then I seemed to beat the campaign within just a few hours, and then I was given an option to "Leave to Origin" or "Stay Here at Duviri". And I had no idea -- so I selected "Origin". And then it was like I STARTED THE GAME AGAIN FROM SCRATCH -- BUT DIFFERENT.
No more horse!
Now I'm on a spaceship in a completely different world.
WTF just happened?
So I'm trying to figure out... Origin is the original game and you can play that forever? And I can go back to Duviri and keep playing there too later? Basically two versions of the game packed in one?
Anyway. It's totally fun. But I just feel like I got shot out of a cannon into outer space.
If anyone wants to help clue me in on the history and/or what to expect next I appreciate it. This seems like a deep universe to dive into.

My boyfriend (20M) and I (19F) have been together for 5 years now, our relationship is wonderful. He's kind, patient and very similar to me. My only complaints are that he isn't as affectionate as I would like and that he sleeps A LOT. However, this post is just about the latter.
He falls asleep during the day constantly, especially when in idle mode. For example, looking outside the window on the bus, or sitting and watching TV. When he's not actively doing anything, he'll be asleep in minutes, or even seconds. For example, one time we were on the bus, and I woke him up one stop before we were due to get off. Before we reached our stop, which was about 30 seconds away, he was asleep again.
I've urged him many times to go to the doctor. At first, he was reluctant and didn't take the request seriously. However, he's finally done it, and is currently waiting for blood test results. While I'm happy he's doing something about it, I know it could be months before the problem is even close to being resolved, if it can be at all.
Now, here's my problem. His sleeping has been taking a toll on me for years, because when we should be spending quality time together, it turns into nap time. He's currently staying with me at university for the weekend and it's only become more apparent and inconvenient. Watching a show together? Falls asleep. Talking? Falls asleep. Playing a game together? Falls asleep.
The minutes before he falls asleep, he's sluggish and not enthusiastic about what we're doing. To me, it comes across as if he's bored, even though he says that's not the case. It's not the sleep, per say, it's more the fact that even though we have been spending a lot of time together, not a lot of it feels like QUALITY time.
One of the more annoying parts is that, he can stay awake for hours at a time playing Destiny and other videogames on his own. It makes me feel like I'm not as entertaining as his games, and he would rather do that than spend time with me.
It really aggravates me, but I know I can't direct my frustration at him because I don't think he can help it. Sometimes I contemplate breaking up over this, but I have a hard time trusting my own intuition. Do I break up with him over this? Or do I suck it up and deal with it, because I love him and our relationship?
TLDR: Boyfriend sleeps excessively during the day, it makes spending time with him feel lonely. It feels even worse when he can stay awake for hours playing videogames on his own. He has gone to the doctor, but I have little faith that the issue will be resolved. Do I break up with him, or stick it out, even if the issue is never resolved?
