2023.03.30 08:03 Robocentric America's economic growth won't stop: next is AI, robotics, human life biotech, nuclear-fusion tech

Processing video uj1ragidgtqa1...

I wholeheartedly believe that the Americans will produce and consume more, on Earth and in outer space, via the advances in AI, robotics, biotech, and nuclear-fusion powered outer space tech. Especially, the American household consumption will skyrocket on Earth and in outer space via the advances in transhumanism.

The backbone of the American economy is the American household consumption. Over 65% of the American economy is from the American household consumption.
In order for America to increase its wealth, the American households must produce and consume more, on Earth and in outer space.
A quick advertisement before I continue on this topic. You can invest in my startup company with as little as US$100, for supporting advancing AI, robotics, biotech, and nuclear-fusion powered outer space tech. Visit Robocentric.com/Investors to invest in my startup.
I've a multidecadal commitment to advancing the transhumanistic technologies. To learn more about my cause, check out my books, which are available at Robocentric.com/Checkout, Amazon, Apple Books, Spotify, and other online audiobook retailers. Now, back to the main content.
So, my question is, how do you make the American households consume more, in order to increase the American national wealth on Earth and in outer space?
First and foremost, increasing the American household consumption requires creating more products that the American consumers will love to buy and consume on Earth and in outer space. That is the number-one requirement and focus in increasing the American household consumption: there must be more products that the American household consumers will love, buy, and consume on Earth and in outer space.
In order to increase America’s wealth, artificial intelligence and robotics must enable developing, manufacturing, and serving more products that the American household consumers will love, buy, and consume on Earth and in outer space.
The human consumption behavior changes, in America, the rest of the First World, and the rest of humanity, when there are brand-new, better goods and services to consume for convenience, excitement, and enjoyment.
The American consumers spend their monies on housing, transportation, food, personal insurance and pensions, healthcare, entertainment, apparel, and education. The future transhumanistic technologies must enable the American consumers to consume more in what they already spend their money on.
The American consumer tastes constantly changes and evolves due to new goods and serves; I'm confident that the forthcoming transhumanistic technologies in AI, robotics, biotech, and nuclear-fusion powered outer space tech will change, evolve, and advance the American consumer tastes and preferences.
I will stick to my course of publicly promoting and advancing transhumanism, unfazed and undeterred.
God willing, the time of transhumanism will surely come.

2023.03.30 07:59 userhasdied_ newly purchased stearns & foster badly damaged during hauling.

today i agreed to a $2,200 lease-to-own contract via mattress firm for a clearance stearns & foster california king on the slim chance my tax return will hit before the 90 day interest-free period is up. i strapped it to the roof of my sedan and brought it home same day.
four people live in my home: me (25F), my girlfriend (24F), my sister (27F) and her 6yo son.
needless to say, it proved impossible to push this thing across the lawn to the front door and up the 2 steps to the patio. we wouldn’t have even gotten it upstairs if we hadn’t been blessed by the help of a handsome foreign stranger who saw us struggling popped up out of nowhere and did most of the grunt work out of the kindness of his heart.
unfortunately, though, throughout this seemingly endless struggle (which ended with my asthmatic sister in the ER for a nebulizer 😞) all four handles on the bed ripped, and with those tears came huge gaping holes in the pillow top’s edge.
i am devastated, for obvious reasons but also because this is the first time i’ve gotten myself something excessively nice. closest thing price wise would be cars, but a $4k car vs a $4k mattress is vastly different in quality/luxury.
every other mattress ive ever owned had been obtained via facebook marketplace, and more than half were listed for free. nicest one i ever had was a king size casper, which was given to an ex for free when his coworker downsized to an RV, so it was never earned nor was it ever really mine either.
any tips? i can’t sew. i mean, i definitely can, but my experience is limited to stuffed animals and (some) clothing. i don’t feel that my novice skill level would do the trick nor stand the test of time. is there, like, a mattress doctor? who can come into my home and stitch it up? i’m so sad :(

2023.03.30 07:55 ybnissaptsuj What’s with the janitor(s) in the SCP foundation? Is their any additional lore to how they have such power or is it just an inside joke?

Whenever we hear about the janitors they are usually portrayed as having 05 level clearance and can do things (like capturing and subduing keter class entities) that require an MTF to achieve by themselves.
My personal head cannon is that their essentially the “old guard” of the SCP foundation back when the fairy genocide occurred before the MTF were established. Which they were given the roll of janitors both for them not being in their prime and for the foundation wanting to keep an eye on them.
Due to them being augmented at a point when the foundation was more loose with what could be done. Essentially meaning each one is individually an SCP that could randomly develop much more deadly anomalous effects at any time.

A little about me I have B.A. in Accounting but i know absolutely nothing about it and have little to no passion in the subject.
For those who care my mbti whatever is ISTP if you'd like to tell me about it or something go ahead lmao.
Half Asian half white wahoo.

Music: I play a couple musical instruments so if you play any I'm interested in hearing about it.
Outdoor activities: I often go biking and like to go to new places any chance I get.
We don't need to necessarily have the same hobbies and I'm down to learn more about whatever you may be into.
Last thing is I use discord mostly and If you'd like to vent or just need an outlet to get stuff out I'm fine with listening so don't hesitate if something is on your mind.
Prefer if you add me on discord: luckyducky#7586
Also I'm only comfortable in talking to people who are 18+ thanks.

2023.03.30 07:49 binarysolo Charging issues after recent software update?

2023 MYLR, using the basic 12A wall charger, in the Tahoe region (not sure if temp matters since it's cold).
Had 0 issues with charging since January, but since the last software update a few days ago I can no longer charge at home on the 12A wall charger. Supercharging still seems fine, just can't charge at home and it's a slight annoyance. Tried switching to different wall outlets (all are grounded) and seem to have issues still.
Error message is "Unable to charge with Mobile Connector - Inadequate outlet grounding - Try a different outlet" -- but I had no issues before and I also used a multimeter to sanitycheck and it seems grounded. Wanted to check to see if anybody else is having issues before I pay for an electrician to doublecheck my garage...

2023.03.30 07:44 mcfuzzum BeaconHD has to be physically pressed on to stay powered on…

Hey guys - I’ve got the oddest issue with my BeaconHD which has been working great for about 2.5 years now.
Yesterday I noticed that it was completely off - no LEDs and UniFi controller did not see it online. I’ve power cycled it and it chugged on without any issues. This morning - same thing, again power cycled and it functioned.
Then again tonight - and that’s when I noticed that it will power on only if I physically pressed on its outer shell - like push it more into the outlet. Tried different outlets and it’s the same exact behavior.
Any ideas? It’s obviously out of wty at this point…
Thanks.

Reading through various white papers on data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the like reveals the strange and terrifying totalitarian system that's rapidly evolving towards human imperceptibility.
THE EVOLVING ROLE OF OPEN-SOURCE INTELLIGENCE
The intelligence environment has been significantly changed over recent years by many factors, including tech-savvy threat actors, the rapid spread of online communications, increased societal unrest and changing geopolitical dynamics. Government and corporate sectors alike are facing an increasing volume and diversity of threats to their communities and businesses.
These threats, combined with masses of data from exploding numbers of online platforms, create a perfect storm of challenges for intelligence teams. As the threat landscape evolves, the technology used to uncover these threats must also evolve - that is where advanced open-source intelligence (OSINT) solutions play an increasingly critical role. Open-source intelligence, often referred to as a subset of digital intelligence, is the process of collecting, analyzing, and extracting meaningful insights from publicly available data sources, including social media, news feeds, blog sites, discussion forums, and more. Terrorist groups, human trafficking networks, politically motivated extremist groups, and other criminals and threat actors are radicalizing, advertising, recruiting, and planning across a constantly evolving range of websites and social media platforms across the Surface, Deep and Dark Web, often communicating in ways that make it difficult for intelligence and law enforcement organizations to monitor their activities and understand the nature of these threats at any given moment.
The sheer volume and complexity of data presents significant challenges - monitoring online platforms and uncovering critical insights is beyond human scale and any attempt to simplify masses of data looking for anything interesting will inevitably lead to false positives and (worse still) operator burnout. This is driving a need for the advanced, AI-enabled insights into masses of online data that open-source intelligence technology delivers.
OSINT is emerging as an invaluable primary intelligence source across law enforcement, intelligence, defense, security vetting, and corporate agencies worldwide. To showcase best practices for applying OSINT to some of the world’s biggest challenges, this section explores several key use cases: — violent extremist threat monitoring, — security vetting/insider threat, — assistance to law enforcement and — corporate supply chain protection
…meme culture is where AI-enabled risk analytics prove to be invaluable in interpreting threats that appear in the form of images, videos, written text, or digital network connections. For example, Fivecast OSINT solutions have been proven to save analyst teams hours and days of manual data manipulation with ongoing, repeatable, and automated collection and assessment of these diverse data mediums, presented in a way that makes assessment efficient. The customizable risk detection framework rapidly surfaces content of interest, including user-defined keywords, phrases, and quotes in posts, while automatically assessing images and videos for objects, memes, concepts, logos, and text (extracted through optical character recognition) of interest.
…as specialist OSINT companies move into this space, with tailored products to keep pace with the vetting, revalidation, and now continuous vetting requirements of governments and corporates, the interest in online data for vetting and insider threat use cases is steadily growing.
Continuous vetting is the ongoing, “light-touch” monitoring of security clearance holders, a considered move away from the flawed paradigm of assessing a security clearance at intervals of five and ten years. Although still in its conceptual phase in Australia, the United States is moving ahead at pace.
In October 2021, William Lietzau, the Director of the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency, said approximately 4 million defense personnel, including military, civilians and contractors, are subject to their continuous vetting program, which is part of the agency’s Trusted Workforce 2.0 initiative and security clearance process.
…If Alshamrani’s (a person accused of terrorism) account had been continuously monitored, it is likely his online activity would have alerted defense vetting agencies well before the attack took place.
OSINT is well established as a source of intelligence in law enforcement, both within Australian and partner agencies overseas. In part, this early formalization of OSINT as a primary intelligence source was necessary due to the “Going Dark” phenomenon. Going Dark was a term first coined in 2015 by then Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey to describe the effect of major telecommunications providers – device manufacturers and app developers alike – enabling end-toend encryption by default across their product ranges. The effect was to freeze out (almost totally) telecommunications intercept, the ‘wiretap’ capability, and digital forensics, the capability to ‘crack’ devices in use by criminals.
Without this baseload data collection, law enforcement rapidly pivoted to alternatives, implementing strong collection and assessment of publicly available online data to provide that broad awareness of the criminal milieu so critical to effective investigations …: OSINT directly assists surveillance by building out a target’s pattern of life prior to a team deploying in the field offering critical insights such as networks of likely social interactions, frequented locations, propensity for violence, or access to weapons. The same can be said in support of human source recruitment and management, where OSINT can be used to passively observe any changes in the interactions, motivations, and activities of an individual that may be of concern to their case officehandler.
…The ANOM app: instead of providing secure communication, it was actually a trojan horse covertly distributed by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP), enabling them to monitor all communications.
CORPORATE & SUPPLY CHAIN
Fivecast was tasked to seek out supply chain risk for a global corporate in vehicle manufacturing.
By examining the company’s various subsidiaries’ official presence across three key social media platforms, analysts were able to quickly establish that protest activity was occurring against one of their manufacturing plants in Germany. Although, at the surface level, this protest activity appeared to be organized by a local trade union, Fivecast was able to establish a deeper underlying motivation by exploring the online activity of the key news agency promoting this protest activity – Rote Fahne News, the news arm of the Marxist-Leninist party of Germany. From a broad brief to discover supply chain risk across a broad portfolio, OSINT was able to establish the threat, its location, and its underlying motivation
Previously the domain of well-managed telecommunications intercept, which has all but “gone dark”, enterprise-level OSINT systems are the obvious replacement to fill that data collection gap. OSINT will become the backbone for data collection on which investigations are built. Rapidly scalable, automated, high reliability, cloud-hosted OSINT systems able to reach online data anywhere (from anywhere) will capture the digital patterns of life of an individual out to 1000s of persons of interest at once.
Machine Learning is a current application of AI-based around the idea that we should really just be able to give machines access to data and let them learn for themselves. A simple way that Fivecast defines AI/ML in OSINT is any capability informed by a model that is “trained”. In this regard, there are a range of capabilities available in advanced OSINT tools now:
— Image detection and classification (including facial recognition) – searches of complete and partial images against mass datasets to return high accuracy matches. — Automated person of interest resolution – taking basic biodata of an entity/entities, finding new data and resolving it to those entities with high accuracy. — Logo detection – recognizing simple and complex (e.g. on clothing) logos in images. — Sentiment and emotion – detection and assessment of sentiment (positive/negative) and key emotions (anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness) in text. — Text similarity – understanding the content and context of passages of text and finding similar meanings in other text (e.g. identifying threats of violence).
These capabilities are all loosely clustered around sifting and sorting functions – how to make the data haystack as manageable as possible for analysts and investigators. In the coming five years, we will very likely see a transition in the focus of the AI/ML from assistance to decision-making. The size of the data haystack is already well beyond human scale, regardless of your intelligence mission. Perhaps discomforting for some, but that point is approaching where the volume (and complexity) of final decision making will be too much - OSINT tools become so good at finding what the intelligence user demands that the tool must also make increasingly complex decisions on what to do with that data output.
Game-Changing, Actionable Intelligence with AI-Driven Computer Vision
Computer vision is a field of artificial intelligence that trains computers to interpret and understand the visual world. Using digital images from cameras and videos and deep learning models, machines can accurately identify and classify objects — and then react to what they “see.”
Data-driven organizations across all industries are unlocking actionable intelligence from real-time video data coupled with other edge sensor data like audio and biometrics, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance edge computing. Adding stored historical data enables a powerful method of using deep learning techniques on videos and digital images known as computer vision, and it’s not only transforming organizations, but more importantly, it’s changing how they build or deliver a product or service. According to IDC, forward-looking organizations that maximize their data to generate insights are two times more profitable and see eight times more growth than their peers.
Computer vision capabilities are fast becoming a significant contributor to that end. Analysts at Omdia expect the global computer vision software market to reach $33.5 billion by 2025 (growing at 42.1 percent year over year). Connecting computer vision to the edge directly impacts what customers do to drive revenue in their organizations. Whether it’s gaining a greater knowledge of customer behavior within a retail space, predicting failures in oil and gas pipelines, controlling autonomous vehicles in a smart city, or managing traveler flow in an airport, private and public organizations of all sizes are capitalizing on the petabytes of audio-visual data captured daily
Historical data can be used as a training archive to develop increasingly accurate models for compelling insights.
government agencies need real-time monitoring at public events or for agriculture, construction, or mining organizations requiring immediate response to system failures in the field
An agile edge-to-core computer vision platform and framework allow cognitive insights to be generated close to the data sources and saved for later use The addition of new systems designed to enhance protection can actually add security gaps and holes if they are not well integrated.
…an environment susceptible to ‘monitoring fatigue’.
Monitoring behaviors - from vehicles to people
Information technology and telecom, energy, banking and finance, transportation and border security, water, and emergency services. These critical infrastructures share a common threat of vandalism, theft and attack coupled with concerns for regulatory compliance and the liability associated with trespassing. By adding advanced perimeter security solutions, these sites can detect intruders before they breach the perimeter.
Radar detection solutions that warn of fast-approaching vehicles coupled with license plate recognition solutions can provide both advanced warning of an imminent threat and the analytics to quickly react to and mitigate potentially dangerous situations. AI-powered heat mapping and behavior analysis tools can also amplify a security team’s ability to proactively assess threats through crowd-gather alerts, wrong-way travel, and other data-driven information.
Milestone revolutionized the industry by leading the transformation from analog to IP cameras. The transformation set the stage for modern video surveillance technology. In 2014, Canon acquired Milestone…By 2019, our net revenue reached just over 143 million USD…by 2022, 215 million USD. …Today, we are present in 25 countries and with partners and customers in nearly every corner of the world.
Data-driven video technology increases the value of video streams—traditionally utilized for safety and security purposes—by combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) with video technology. For example, by adding Artificial Intelligence to the mix, we are getting things like Adaptive Video Analytics, which allow users to calibrate the AI model deployed at various sites. In practice, this means that the industry will continue to move towards embedding self-learning, self-calibrating video analytic technology into cameras and other devices, allowing them to self-adjust to changing scene conditions. All that data will be captured by the Video Management Software (VMS). In the future, this data will improve the accuracy of Video Analytics and make the value of the video streams captured, organized, and archived by the VMS incredibly important. Data-driven video technology will truly “make the world see.”
Threats, unlike any previously imagined have become real and commonplace
Preventing access to physical machines and networking using biometric credentials is in keeping with a broader industry trend to phase out easily compromised techniques such as passwords and pins.
Security no longer involves simply physical access; it now must embrace digital access and the authorization to execute transactions and services using personal devices. Examples include leveraging biometrics built into mobile devices such as mobile phones and electronic wearables to provide real-time requests for authorization to complete transactions, access systems, or to move data. Electronic objects and networks which may be connected and accessed using personal electronics include:
-The onboard computer system in vehicles, such as automobiles and scooters
-Medical devices, both external and inside the body
-Financial accounts, payment systems, and healthcare systems
-Entertainment platforms, such as video games and television
-Exercise equipment
-Luggage tracking
-Home appliances and HVAC Systems
-Access control door readers with Bluetooth technology
In the world of digital security these are all considered “connected objects.” Biometric solutions play a mission critical role in the new world of “connected objects” to provide verification and trust (certainty) of an individual’s identity for frictionless, secure physical and digital access. Biometrics provides assurance that only an authorized individual can access their “connected objects.”
Security trends to watch for in 2023
2023 will see significant adoption of AI-based analytics in cameras and video management systems (VMS) as more manufacturers provide this feature within their standard camera lines. There are simply too many camera streams for humans to monitor effectively, so AI-based analytics will be a catalyst that enables security departments to do more with less.
Video surveillance for education must integrate easily with other security applications to extend the power of the system.
...ditching manual methods once and for all.
Successful businesses are preparing their operations for the future and want a video surveillance system that is AI capable and has the flexibility to run advanced analytics. Dynamic shifts over the past few years in the way the world does business forced companies to use technology in new ways. Video surveillance systems, once only used for security, are now a tool to help optimize business operations. Businesses want an AI-ready video surveillance system that will generate useful insights from gathered data.
Over 50% of businesses are using AI in some way, with more than 25% reporting widespread AI adoption within their company, according to a 2022 AI business survey by PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The survey shows that businesses that are not already using AI know that new, modern technologies will automate their systems and processes in the future and are budgeting for the infrastructure now.
Video surveillance systems capable of running AI help businesses scale their ability to analyze and act on data. Advanced uses include systems that can automatically detect and send real-time alerts of security threats and gather data to provide useful information like peak foot traffic or customer wait times.
In 2022 inflation broke a 40-year high. There are few indications that consumers or businesses can expect inflation relief in the cost of goods and services in the near future. Security companies must find ways to increase revenue to compensate for the higher prices in materials, overhead increases, wage inflation, and the possible attrition of customers who need to “tighten the belt.”
According to the National Apartment Association (NAA), demand for apartments is at an all-time high. The demand is driven by a number of young adults aged 18 to 24 who are delaying home ownership and an aging population sometimes choosing to live in apartments.
Parks Associates research finds that 80% of property managers plan to implement smart home devices within the next 12 months, demonstrating a strong demand for automation and operational efficiency in the MDU space (living in an apartment with a roommate, basically).
Whether for a video doorbell or freestanding camera, manufacturers are improving pixel quality, night vision, thermal vision, camera view, camera durability, battery life, and A.I. detecting capabilities.
adoption of vehicle monitoring services is on the rise
almost 50% of apartment or townhome residents report having a package theft, while over 60% of condominium residents report having a package stolen.
Overall, Swiftlane estimates $6 billion worth of packages were stolen in 2020.
Frictionless Technology Keeps Gaining Momentum
Before the pandemic, the market was moving toward frictionless options, but COVID accelerated the need for touch-free technology. Today, the frictionless user experience is here to stay, the company says, because it delivers highly secure access using biometric identifiers that are unique to each individual, have greater ease of use, and can reduce the spread of germs.
The three primary technologies used to create a frictionless experience are iris scans, facial recognition and facial authentication. Iris scans have proven to help boost security, but adoption has lagged, given the disruption it creates for movement into secure areas. Facial recognition, primarily used in mass surveillance, has shown promise, but privacy concerns have slowed adoption.
And, with the introduction of facial authentication in everyday consumer products such as the iPhone, it is becoming the go-to technology to create a frictionless environment
When facial authentication is coupled with intelligent systems, not only can someone receive real-time security alerts when unauthorized access to restricted entrances occurs, but they also get actionable data to modify user behavior.
The security industry is innovating rapidly to provide new solutions that drive revenue and customer loyalty. Product features that are cutting edge today will be expected features in base model products. Dealers need to keep abreast of the latest innovations to source products that customers will start to demand
The impact on security dealers looks to be a net positive, as the major players in the home security space are currently seeing record highs in revenue despite slowed growth and times of economic uncertainty.

2023.03.30 07:34 1955photo Combo duplex outlet with USB charger?

I would like to replace several outlets in my home with a combo duplex outlet with a USB charger, like this one.
Two different people (who are competent amateurs) have told me this type of outlet uses power even when nothing is plugged into it. That makes no sense to me, but is there a grain of truth in that assertion?

2023.03.30 07:32 NoConversation850 Burnaby Tim Hortons Becomes Haven for Homeless Woman

At first glance, the Tim Hortons at 3433 North Road in Burnaby, British Columbia, appears to be just like any other outlet of the popular Canadian coffee chain. But for the past five years, it has unwittingly become a haven for the homeless. One woman [known as Cindy Hicks] in particular, has made this location her home, staying from the early hours of 5 AM until their closing time at 11 PM. For Hicks, it has become a sanctuary [back in 2012, Hicks was evicted from her co-op housing as reported by the Burnaby Now]— a place of refuge from the cold and cruel world that exists beyond the doors. She has become a familiar face, with regular customers and employees alike bearing witness to her daily struggle.
Despite the numerous attempts of patrons to reach out to Hicks and help her (including visits from authorities and Fraser Health, who say they’ve previously offered her options for food and shelter), she remains steadfast in her unwillingness. Well-intentioned individuals have even gone the extra mile and contacted her family members, who say they’ve had to sever ties with Hicks.
Cindy’s strained relationships with her family members, including her son, Roy Asselstine, paints a disheartening picture of her situation. According to Asselstine, his mother’s “persistent pattern of taking from others” has left the family feeling exhausted and disheartened, as her unwillingness to accept help and make meaningful changes in her life has pushed them to distance themselves.
However, she is not completely closed off to interaction. The woman will graciously accept food and coffee from kind strangers, but her reluctance to accept more comprehensive assistance has become a source of frustration for many in the community, leaving some individuals feeling that Hicks is using their generosity without making any effort to improve her situation.
Last year, a local resident, James Foster, opened his home to Cindy in an attempt to offer her refuge and support. However, Cindy did not take advantage of this opportunity to improve her situation. According to Foster, she had the chance to obtain her government identification and apply for pension benefits but refused to do so. Instead, Foster says Hicks spent “several months” sitting on his couch “in a catatonic-like state,” ultimately leading Foster to ask her to leave his home. In recent days, Cindy has been spending some nights at the home of another nearby resident, Heather Campbell. However, this arrangement has been inconsistent, and Cindy continues to return to Tim Hortons on most occasions.
Amidst the ongoing situation, Cindy’s son, Roy Asselstine, has addressed Tim Hortons staff, customers and local residents with a heartfelt plea, asking them not to enable his mother’s detrimental behavior. Roy states, “I urge everyone in the community, as well as the patrons and staff of Tim Hortons, to reconsider supporting my mother’s reliance on others. Although it may seem like a compassionate gesture, it ultimately perpetuates her struggle and hinders her from taking charge of her own life.”
Roy’s emotional appeal highlights the importance of understanding the long-term consequences of well-intentioned gestures. His words serve as a reminder that meaningful change often requires a different approach, one that doesn’t enable destructive habits, even when the intention is well-meaning and to try to provide immediate assistance. By urging the community to reconsider their actions, Roy hopes to create an environment that encourages his mother to take responsibility for her life and seek the help she needs to overcome her challenges and move towards a better future.
One would also expect Tim Hortons to address the issue of a homeless individual occupying their premises for such an extended period, but surprisingly, the company has done little to intervene. It seems that the plight of the homeless woman is a low priority for the franchise, and her presence has become an accepted, albeit unfortunate, part of the daily routine at this location.
This situation also raises several critical questions: What does this say about our society’s response to homelessness? Have we become desensitized to the point where we can sit and sip our coffee, unbothered by the person struggling to survive just a few feet away? And why has Tim Hortons, a brand synonymous with Canadian values, chosen to turn a blind eye to the plight of the homeless woman in their midst? While some may argue that the woman’s continued presence at Tim Hortons is a testament to the company’s tolerance and understanding, it is also indicative of a deeper, systemic problem. The issue of homelessness extends far beyond the doors of a single coffee shop; it is a reflection of the inadequacy of social support structures and the lack of affordable housing options for those in need.
As Canadians, we must come together to address these underlying issues and create a more compassionate and inclusive society. Providing food and coffee to a homeless individual is a kind gesture, but it is merely a temporary solution to a much larger problem. Moreover, it is crucial for businesses like Tim Hortons to play a more active role in addressing the issue of homelessness. By partnering with local organizations and advocating for social change, they can demonstrate their commitment to the communities they serve and work towards a future where no one has to call a coffee shop their home.
The story of Cindy Hicks serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by many in our society. It is time for all of us — individuals, businesses, and the government — to take responsibility for the well-being of our fellow citizens and work together to create a world where everyone has access to a safe and stable environment.

2023.03.30 07:24 lytespeed Garmin Dezl OTR 700 height clearance settings.

For those of you with a Garmin Dezl OTR700 what do you guys set your height clearance too? I had mine at the default and it was taking me around all sorts of bridges that I could easily make. The safety and compliance lady at my company told me 3.99 metres (13”1)is what we can “actually” clear.
Thing is she never actually drove a truck so I’m nervous to set the gps to that lol.
I’m going into the states for the first time from Canada and hear a lot of crazy stories about bridges down there. So what do you guys set it too?
Also as a side note careful when using these garmin gps. Mine was freshly updated and set to 63,500kg gvwr and it took me over a 10 ton weight restricted bridge in Quebec!

2023.03.30 07:09 kpapazyan47 Today's Game Thread was the last for IndyCornrows. It shuts down entirely on Friday.

I'm sure many other people here are or were regular commentators there, or at least occasionally dropped in, and it really is a shame that we as a fanbase are losing such a great community and resource. For a team like ours, that so often is ignored by larger media outlets, to have such a great website with unbelievably great staff members, like Caitlin Cooper, for one, was such a great luxury and one that will be sorely missed, at least in my mind.
It really is disappointing that the site wasn't allowed at least to carry on to the end of the season, but the fact that they fought to keep it going for an additional month against Vox's wishes shows the passion of those working there.
I hope the staff there find great future opportunities, hopefully still in the Pacers-Sphere.

2023.03.30 07:06 EqualDot A reflection after 12 years on Reddit…

I discovered Reddit in my last year of college in 2012. I’m now 34, married, with a house and a stable job, but still painfully addicted to the internet and to Reddit specifically.
While I’d describe myself as a relative “normie”, the internet has made me indulge in things that appealed to - and made worse- the more quirky parts of my personality.
Anyway, here’s some things I’ve learned about Reddit over the past decade, and the internet in general, that I hope you’ll find helpful in your journey to breaking free.
Lesson 1: Reddit information is equivalent to fast food - it’s quick, convenient, and probably not good for you.
I’ve scrolled thousands of posts since 2012 and have maybe retained a few random facts on maybe 5% of what I’ve consumed. Everything here is meant to be “here today and gone tomorrow”, which means it’s value in your life is shallow and immediate, but rarely ever lasting.
If anything, I’ve been exposed to things I shouldn’t have been exposed to (there’s a lot of weird subs….) and have had to face real life consequences from going to Reddit for health advice at the peak of my addiction.
Lesson 2: Redditor expertise is usually misinformed
Take everything you read in the main subs (news, politics, even sports) with a massive grain of salt. You will understand this when you see posts about topics you really know about - the best answer to the topic is usually not the top one, it’s actually several responses below or hidden in the replies.
If this is the case for topics you’re familiar with, just think of what you’re taking at face value from top comments as the truth for unfamiliar topics.
You don’t know who is on the other end really giving advice or speaking about a topic.
One of the most insecure, messy, and downright loser-y guys I’ve ever been around in my life was a huge Redditor - he used to talk about how much karma he had from his advice and posts. In reality, the guy barely had anything together in his life and would spend hours on Reddit while eating KD from a saucepan.
And lately, with the onslaught of young users, more often than not if you look up a persons profile after reading their “advice”, you’ll often find them posting on something like /teenagers.
Taking anonymous advice from literal children who have a very limited understanding of the world is not the best way to take in information.
Lesson: there is no FOMO in 2023
Reddit is now pretty mainstream and a lot of legit news outlets and YouTube channels use it to feed their own content.
If you want to stay up to date, just use 1-2 legit media apps to glance at key stories. Trust me, you’re not missing much by not reading a top comment here.
Good luck and AMA if you need.

2023.03.30 06:59 Madmaxohio75 Nothing can touch me

It has been months... I never pretended it would get better, but I never knew it could get this much worse. Going through a dissolution (divorce, separation, etc ) is hard enough. Everything exists on a spectrum, and I guess that's why we are all here. Together. I could write an entire book about all the simultaneous fucked up things that are currently engulfing my life... But I won't. I feel like I need to vent. I feel like I need to reach out. To someone. To anyone. I feel like my substance abuse isn't helping me either. When you are drowning in sorrow and trauma, why not drown it in something else? I know it's not the right thing to do, but the hurt of everything only goes away if I numb it. Should I try to jump out of the ground floor window of the bedroom I'm in, and plummet 28 inches to my certain death? Should I take a vow of celibacy and silence and move to Tibet? Should I just start writing county songs? I'm just lost and hurt, lonely and wanted to say something. It's all stupid words just to purge my non-stop brain. This was worthless and I'm sorry for anyone who wasted their time. Most times, this is my only outlet, my only friend. I don't mean to abuse it, but I'm not sure what could even touch me anymore.

2023.03.30 06:59 tempestuousDespot This is my first PC build, I'd love to hear what people think

This was the first time I built a pc from scratch and my goal was to create a new personal workstation for myself. After several years of using a msi gaming laptop with an intel i7-9750h, 16gb or ram and a mobile rtx 2060 with a few m2 ssd for storage (it has performed wonderfully over the years), I wanted to go for high end system that will hopefully serve me well for years to come (my initial impressions seem promising). I call it HAL 9000

Overall, it was a pretty great experience with only a handful of hiccups. And as a brief background, I am relatively aware of the fundamental concepts behind creating a modern pc so it wasn't too bad but I was still nervous and encountered some things I needed to work around .

*The following paragraph is just about specifics with the minor trouble I had getting these parts in the case*

With that said, I do want to mention an important caveat with how I lucked out selecting the components. This was after doing a fair amount of research trying to make sure the stuff I picked were all compatible. The issue would be relatively minor for people more experienced but for me it was all new territory. The 420 mm radiator in the AIO cpu cooler and the case caused some incredibly tight fitment between the various components. The cooler is a 420mm Artic liquid freezer II and the case is a Fractal meshify 2, if I got the XL version of the case I probably would've had a much easier experience. It took me a while to figure out how to topmount the radiator in the case and there was a small problem with the io shield on the motherboard because of all the extra thickness for the unnecessary integrated rgb. It caused a bit of a fitment issue in the rear part of the radiator with the top bracket but luckily there are many other mounting points. There is very little clearance with the ram on the motherboard (I was lucky that the ram I picked was low profile) and I had to rearrange some of the case fans. Luckily there was a video on youtube with this case and aio combo where they talked about encountering these same issues.

Okay, with problems out of the way onto the good stuff. It was genuinely enjoyable to build this thing. I spent a while picking out the main components and putting them all together was good fun. After dealing with the aio radiator in the case, everything around the motherboard fit together pretty well. With it all assembled everything posted just fine the first time :) , well after I forgot to switch on the psu in the back lol. The cpu and version of the motherboard bios it shipped with detected all 128 gb of ddr5 ram without issue. It was easy to update the bios to the latest version but it was missing some drivers on the OS level.

Because I'm a novice in much of this I am not too familiar with many of these specs but this msi z790 carbon motherboard has some default auto overclock type settings for the cpu and automatically had a preloaded xmp memory profile. I have a lot to learn about all theses bios settings. All the settings for me to take advantage of these parts are in the bios but I need to learn what they all mean.

The cpu, with the default profile for being watercooled in the bios, has an auto boost and unlocked power limit which lets the intel i9 13900k go all out under an all core load and reach a 300+ watt usage and bounce off 100C while blasting at a constant 5.5+ Ghz on all those P cores the entire time. I ran cinebench, blender and 3dmark a few times and under full load this cpu can get real power hungry and real hot real fast. It's really cool, just like having access to a high performance vehicle. Realistically, I'll probably turn off the auto boost and set a hard upper power limit in the bios to limit heat. I tested a 200 watt upper limit earlier and it ran much cooler under full load, around 70-80C tops with only a minimal loss in performance. I'll figure out some settings that work for me. Even under default auto oc style settings the system is actually very manageable when doing light work and even moderate gaming. Just browsing the web, running basic programs and light gaming will hardly tax the system (cpu power usage of around 20-140 watts with temps 35-65 C). Even under heavy gaming the temps only go up to around 70-80C.

This msi 4090 gpu is comically large and also incredibly powerful. Testing out some light rendering workloads in blender and unreal engine with some synthetic benchmarks from 3dmark thrown in for good measure have been super fun. The card chews through even 100% utilization workloads and I've only seen temps around 70C top. Most modern games, even on all max settings at 1440 x 3440, hardly stress this card. The card is so large it smushes some sata and usb 3.0 header cables underneath but it's not too bad.

This modular 1200 watt atx 3.0 corsair psu made cable management and installation pretty easy and this mobo is wild with the amount of options, I love it, now I need to go open some bay doors

Here's the entire part list:

2023.03.30 06:29 alltoowell_21 Gusto ko mag rant pero in my better judgement I just cried.

Hello. Grabe ang heavy ng buhay and the burden that comes with it. It's so hard to be stucked sa giving everything your family wants while compromising your funds and needs.
It's just hard for me. Hahaha! I have so many things to say pero life's just what it is. I just keep praying na everything will be better in time (I'm not religious pero I'm holding on with my beliefs na it gets better).
To all the panganays out there, I know you are struggling. Iiyak niyo lang. I am sending my virtual hugs to all of u! It will definitely get better (I hope so). Don't be so caught up in your struggles. Find an outlet of positivity in life. Please, try to get by. I know it will never be easy, I hope you can hold on.

Hardwired to non-hardwired dishwasher replacement
Is it ok to plug new dishwasher into same outlet as garbage disposal? If so, what to do with old/exposed wiring? If not, is it safe to turn the other junction into an outlet and post it on the sink side of the cabinet wall? What’s the best/safest thing to do here?

2023.03.30 06:22 schadenfreudiaan "Asheville Weirdness" 101: T's "Resources" for the New, Normal, Neurodiverse, Bored, Inexperienced, and/or "Aspiring Unconventional"

So, you've heard that Asheville is weird. Perhaps that's even a part of the reason that you moved here! But now that you're here, you're wondering.. how do I go about "getting started" as an Ashevillian?
Here are some LEGAL, AFFORDABLE, & OCCASIONALLY CREATIVE "solutions" to your problems:
1) I want to get to know some new people in the area so that I can form some genuine friendships and/or relationships, but I'm anxious about it and/or am not sure where to start:
That's why this subreddit exists! There's clearly an unmet need here, and it's my hope that we'll be able to do some really neat things with this community. Meet-ups are in the works, as is a private Facebook group, and I would love to put together things like a group chat to help people start to connect (we've got a lot of introverts in the house who would prefer to get to know each other before meeting up!).
I'm also considering starting a trauma-support group, as I have PTSD and know that I'm not alone in that respect (thank you to everyone who's reached out!). It could be fun and empowering to set up something like self-defense classes, even, or we could just get a group-chat going (or group yoga!).
At this point, finding/deciding on various meeting spots that will work for various people's hobbies, locations, etc., as well as figuring out everyone's availability for meet-ups are a priority for me; suggestions are more than welcome! We have a lot of people who are into trivia, or beer, or hiking, etc.. great! Now we just need to start on coordinating/organizing various groups/meet-ups, I suppose. Keeping an eye out for new people who are introducing themselves and welcoming them warmly should always remain a priority, of course; that's kind of the point of this subreddit's existence! :)
2) I feel like going somewhere or doing something but don't know where to go and don't have anybody to go with. Where am I pretty likely to have a good time if I decide to venture out?
I'm honestly a bit of a hermit, but we've had a lot of really great suggestions throughout various threads in this subreddit, so I did my best to compile that information into some suggestions here:
https://taqueriamunoz.com/menu/ - this is the way, and I know this to be true on a personal level.
https://www.thegreyeagle.com/ - I'm seeing a lot of comments from people who frequent this place, and they seem to be positive, mostly! Please correct me if I'm wrong; your experience(s) may vary.
https://www.wagbar.com/ - lots of people recommending this place! Seems like it could be fun for a meet-up (and/or to get your pup's energy out); I'm not sure how busy it is or how it's set up, though.
https://www.dobrateanc.com/ - super chill tea place if you're one of those people who sometimes likes to just do their own thing around other people who are doing their own things (cough, cough, me).
https://www.leosavl.com/ - apparently, this is a really good place for a date night! It's a little spendy, but it's classy, non-threatening, and tasty, per the overwhelming majority of responses that I read.
https://www.ashevillekava.com/ - great alternative hang-out for non-drinkers! Sounds very chill.
https://ashevilleyachtclub.com/ - opposite end of the spectrum; local dive bar with local drunks.
https://burialbeer.com/location/forestry-camp/ - pretty sure this is the location that you guys were talking about the other day? There's also the South Slope location. See, also: https://dssolvr.com/, https://highlandbrewing.com/, https://hillmanbeer.com/, https://www.pisgahbrewing.com/, and so on.
Obviously, leaving the house and doing things is not my strong point! Please feel free to add whatever suggestions you may have below; knowledge is power, and I typically love to see it shared freely!
3) You know how asheville is always getting inundated with "give me your plug" & "sell me dr*gs" posts? If you don't wanna be that guy but do enjoy cannabis, then.. may I suggest:
https://mellowfellow.fun/ - honestly my favorite legal option! They're a bit on the spendy side, but it's worth it, IMHO (they've got, like, actual PhD's working there, and I trust them quality/safety-wise).
https://www.apotheca.org/our-stores - local business with multiple locations if you prefer to do your shopping in-person! They also have kava, kratea, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverage options. The employees have always been really chill and sweet to me; they're happy to help you get started out.
https://www.elementvape.com/clearance-hemp - if you're broke and are having a rough time, these guys will hook you up. Quick shipping. I try to support small businesses, but sometimes, it's just not financially feasible, and the clearance section here is CHEAP cheap & has some decent-quality brands. Also, please call or text 988 if things get really bad, friend. The world is a better place with you in it.
Anyway, as the majority of reasonable people realize, once you've put down roots and have formed healthy friendships here, your "plugs" will come along naturally, if you would like to go down that path. I fully support/commend sober folks! but I'm also not going to the gate-keep "legal/affordable cannabis" options here. Honestly, I find it a bit odd that North Carolina, which is advertised as "one of the best states for veterans," doesn't allow medical cannabis use for people suffering from PTSD.
4) You know how your new friends keep talking about signs and planets and houses and, like, crystals and protection jars? Welp, here's where you can figure out what the hell is going on:
https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com/birth-chart-horoscope-online - literally just plug in your DOB and time/location of birth and read away. Who knows; it may even resonate with you! This is a pretty solid source; their synastry charts are also spot-on (if you wanna impress an astrology chick, this is the way).
https://astro.cafeastrology.com/natal.php - if you found what you read above interesting, then this site elaborates quite a bit more with descriptions of your placements and what it all means. Remember that while we all have our weak spots, we are capable of inner work. I have some placements that I don't like (Venus in Gemini comes to mind!), but I look at it as an opportunity for growth, nowadays.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeraphinaReiki - Sarah's way over the pond, but I love her so much! She's honestly cheaper and better than any licensed counselor that I've seen in the 15+ years that I've been in therapy (yes, that says a lot about the state of healthcare in America; no, you should not judge us). I'm honestly tempted to gatekeep her because she's legit changed my life (and is getting very busy).
https://www.etsy.com/people/PsychicAdelyn - in a similar vein, ADELLE DOES NOT FUCK AROUND. Is she an actual psychic? Who knows. Will she give you the brutal reality check that you need for $5? Yes.
https://soulku.com/ - if you're looking for a meaningful gift for a special person, this is very Asheville.
https://www.facebook.com/ashevilleravenandcrone/ - basically the most "Asheville" shop in Asheville. They will help you figure out if your ex is trying to curse you. Black cat adoption events. I enjoy them!
It's cool if you don't believe in astrology and whatnot. I come from a family of engineers and sneered at it myself up until a few years ago (after lots of therapy). It's a harmless hobby at worst and can be utilized as a tool to increase self-awareness and encourage growth, best-case scenario, in my opinion.
5) So, I've never lived in a "real" city before, and I'm not sure how to feel about the homeless people, drug use, and mental illness that I've witnessed here. What can I do to process this?
https://belovedasheville.com/get-involved/ - honestly, getting involved in the community (and giving back to the community in the process) is a great way to begin to understand your new reality, IMHO.
https://helpmateonline.org/voluntee - you can volunteer to help victims of domestic violence here.
https://www.mannafoodbank.org/how-you-can-help/voluntee - also a popular place to volunteer!
https://www.ashevillehumane.org/get-involved/volunteer - love animals? help save them (and meet other people who love animals in the process!). See, also: https://charliesangelsanimalrescue.com/
https://allsoulscounseling.org/ - affordable counseling; they are wonderful people, in my experience.
https://www.asheville.com/directory/local/mental-health-services/ - other mental-health resources.
Also, read up on culture shock! It gets better. Things like writing in a journal daily can really help; also, here is a link to where I have accumulated a bunch of mental-health resources: https://pin.it/3IoZAp0
The main thing that bothers me about asheville is how savagely people who are asking genuine, innocent questions can get attacked. I grew up in a small town in Northern MN, then moved down to Minneapolis, then to Clyde, then to Asheville, and so on, so I'm no stranger to feeling like a stranger. I know that there are some really solid "locals" who feel the same way, and hopefully, this subreddit will help bring out the best in everyone involved (including myself, of course!). Let's keep this sub "clean."
Anyway, that's all I've got, folks! I hope that you're all having a good night. Please feel free to add to, correct, or expand on anything that I may have have gotten wrong in the comments; I'm doing my best, but a freakin' SWAT team was at my apartment complex earlier, and I'm still a little shaken up!
