2023.03.22 07:22 Meaning-Plenty Poets can’t remain aloof from politics, but they shouldn’t become its victims either: Rehman Rahi - Wande Magazine

Wande Magazine: How does it feel being Kashmir’s greatest living poet? (he has died since then)
Rehman Rahi: To say this myself would not be appropriate. Whatever people may think of me, I respect it. I have only ever attempted something feeble and small. Poetry was God’s gift to me. All my life, I have campaigned for the Kashmiri language. So when people recognise my work, it obviously makes me happy. I ask myself, ‘Is this really true?’ Those who have said this about me are well-known literary figures, so one feels they must be speaking the truth (laughs).
My single-minded effort has been to raise the standard of the Kashmiri language so that it achieves a status on par with the great languages of the world in which literature is written; to bring it to the notice of the world’s great writers so that they know what’s happening with this language.
It is God's blessing that verses and poems came to me that people have appreciated. If people didn’t appreciate my poetry, they wouldn’t have translated it. A lot of my poetry has been translated and it has gotten me recognition. When I meet people at different places who show respect for me and my work, I feel I must have done something good (smiles).
Are you disappointed that Kashmiris don’t sufficiently value their poets? As a poet, what do you desire from your community?
I want readers for Kashmiri poetry. I write poetry and it gets published but then someone should read it. There should be readers of Kashmiri poetry. Only after reading it can someone make an opinion about whether it is good or bad poetry. Or whether the poet is writing in the old traditional way or the modern or whether the poet is representing his people and society in his poetry. This can only be known and understood once someone reads it.
I feel very sad that there are not many readers of the Kashmiri language. It’s terribly sad. Earlier, not many books were published in Kashmiri, till even Mehjoor’s time. In his time, sixteen-page poetry pamphlets used to be published. These were not books or collections of poems. Today, almost every day there is a new collection of poetry and it’s brought out in a very professional manner. However, there are very few readers. Those who purchase books are different. Serious readers are different. Even if you lend someone a book, it’s not expected that they would read it. The one main reason for this is that the new generation of Kashmiris—those in schools, colleges and universities (who are the future readers) don’t have much of an inclination towards the Kashmiri language. They have not been taught and trained in this language. It’s not really their fault. There is no such culture in their homes, or in our schools or in society. Kashmiri language and those who speak it are looked down upon. People feel proud to speak in Urdu and other languages even if they don't speak those well. I feel really sad. Our recognition and the recognition of the Kashmiri language should come from young people.
If there are no readers for Kashmiri poetry, what is the fun of writing poetry?
There is a small minority of people, even some youngsters who show a lot of interest in Kashmiri poetry, but their number is very small. Looking at them one gets happy. There is hope that maybe in future the number of these people would increase.
A modest movement for the Kashmiri language is underway for which some organizations like Adbi Markaz Kamraz are specially working. Many others are working towards this end. If they succeed in their efforts, more people might get interested in the Kashmiri language.
Why don't major and influential poets like you participate in Kashmir’s intellectual and political discourse?
Kashmir has no real tradition of what you call political poetry. There are bits and pieces of political poetry in Sheikh ul Alam’s work which speak about the times he lived in. Majorly, it is Sufi poetry which has dominated the Kashmiri literary landscape. Sufi poetry is metaphysical and doesn’t have much to do with the affairs of this world. This is one main reason why poets haven’t been part of the political discourse.
However, it is not entirely true that we [poets] don’t participate at all. Recently, I participated in a political rally. It’s not necessary to mention where. A leader at the rally complained that Kashmiri poets aren't part of the political discourse. In response, I read a nazm there. They were surprised to hear the nazm in which I had talked about the Kashmiri struggle at length. The nazm is called Khak e Karbala.
Since 1947 onwards, many poets in Kashmir have written about the contemporary times they were living in and about their political and social realities. A lot has been written. I have also written at length. Now when people don’t read, what can I do about it? It then seems we haven’t written anything.
Poets don’t participate in protest demonstrations and rallies. But whenever we felt it was necessary to participate, we participated without hesitation, especially for the [promotion] Kashmiri language for which we have held demonstrations for weeks altogether in Pratap Park [Lal Chowk, Srinagar]. Men and women participated in that demonstration and we sat there for a week. The result [of that demonstration] was that the Kashmiri language was introduced in primary classes at schools.
We also have to look at the peculiarities of different eras in Kashmir. Mehjoor and Azad were political poets and Dina Nath Nadim was in and out a political poet. Mehjoor and Azad are among the first poets who represented Kashmir’s political reality in their poems. Mehjoor showed the Kashmiri people their history. He showed that we [Kashmiris] are not a small people and that we possess a rich history in our cultural and political past. He offered Kashmiris their history and invoked us to rise. After 1947, there was a concerted effort to elevate the Kashmiri language through the inclusion of other genres of literature, which weren't part of the Kashmiri language before such as short stories, essays, novels and literary criticism.
In contemporary times, we have Zareef Ahmad Zareef whose entire poetry is political and many others like Amin Kamil have written at length about the politics of this place, especially after 1947 which we now call resistance poetry.
I have also tried my hand at resistance poetry. But as I said, there is only one handicap, which is that there are very few readers available. If there are readers of Kashmiri, this language will survive. If there are no readers, it will die. It is said, that every day in the world there are languages which die as there are no speakers. If the same happens with Kashmir, then what is Rehman Rahi, Dina Nath Nadim or Mehjoor?
We have also witnessed a massive change in social and political times. In the past, if you would have asked Sheikh ul Alam or Shams Faqir to write or comment on political times, they wouldn’t have been able to do it. There was no such culture in those times. They used to speak or write about an otherworldly metaphysical world.
The present times are different. The present times are very political in nature. We live in a very political world.
Are you worried about the future of the Kashmiri language and poetry?
I am worried but not sad because new writers are being born in Kashmir. We have a handful of serious readers who read Kashmiri literature and then comment and write about it. Many books have appeared critiquing and appreciating the work of poets like me. These bunch of people have realized that writing in Kashmiri is a serious affair and should be taken seriously unlike our children in schools and colleges who pay no attention and consider Kashmiri literature not worthy of their interest and attention.
If only Kashmiri people would realize how rich our language is, we will work for it day and night. The Kashmiri language has great potential. I have never been disappointed by the Kashmiri language. It’s not restrictive language. At times while writing poetry, there would be challenges such as there was no word available in Persian, Sanskrit, Urdu or even Kashmiri but such is the nature of the Kashmir language that I could make new words, which were later accepted and appreciated.
If the Kashmiri nation has to truly survive, it will only survive through the Kashmiri language. Otherwise Kashmiri nation will be a soulless nation.
Is there anyone among the younger crop of Kashmiri poets who you think holds promise?
There are many. They aren’t young poets, but they are my younger contemporaries. Rafiq Raaz is an excellent poet. There are limitations with his oeuvre, of course, but he is a genuine poet who will contribute a great deal to Kashmiri literature. There are limitations to his poetry because he gets too concerned about the technicalities and restricts himself.
I have written a verse about Rafiq Raaz in one of my books.
Rafiq Raaz chu muchraan tilismii khanan barr Sarood khan chiss sormi nazar ti khamosh hi
There is Shafi Shauq, who has been a professor at the University of Kashmir. Shad Ramzan is another fine poet. Shahnaz Rashid is another promising poet.
Shahnaz Rashid writes both ghazals and nazms. He didn’t write nazms but I encouraged him and he wrote some brilliant nazms. Ghulam Rasool Josh from Charar-e-Sharief is another excellent poet.
There are excellent poetesses as well such as Ruksana Jabeen and Naseem Shafaie. While Jabeen writes in both Kashmiri and Urdu, Shafaie writes in Kashmiri alone. Shafaie has received an award from the Sahitya Academy.
Kashmiris have produced great poetry because they have faced oppression. Sufi poetry, in fact, was a response to the deplorable conditions of our people. Today, there are only a few genuine Sufi poets in Kashmir.
How do you see the rise of BJP? What does it portend for Kashmir?
There is always a reason to worry when men of narrow thought come to power. They might think they are right in themselves, but they are not. Take Modi for instance. He is a Hindutva man and he might think Hindutva is a great philosophy. To an extent, it is fine if he or other Indians feel Hindutva gives them some historical identity and they have some sort of past to live up to. It becomes problematic when they adopt a narrow vision of politics. If we don’t accept the narrow politics of some Muslim leaders who believe that Muslims are the only great community, how can I accept Hindutva?
Another problem with the current times is the spectre of party politics and the notion that one's party should win by hook or crook. In my younger days, the youth used to look up to political parties as philosophical bastions. Youth were attracted to them mainly because the parties had some philosophical ideas to offer. I, for one, was attracted to the communist ideology and became a member of the Communist Party in Kashmir. I really thought they had something new to offer and some new ideas. Later on, I was disillusioned and today I can’t call myself a follower of Marx. However, back then, it did seem that Marx was saying something that no one before had articulated.
With the coming to power of these people, if the Kashmiri identity is attacked, I will oppose it. It should be opposed by everybody. The Kashmiri identity has some peculiar characteristics which should be protected.
We often hear of the killings in Kashmir. We hear about someone being shot on the roadside or someone being shot while buying essentials. We also hear of men entering homes and killing people. I just remembered a verse. There is a word in this couplet, “mogjaar”, which means freedom.
Parwardigar’e saane ti mogjaar mekh karam Kath poshe waare baaghe barikh boale badle bamm
Wech aasi daare lyie, ti pellet gun aechen pharrem Shah taan kruuth pyom pepper krath seene dam
Almighty, show mercy, guide us to the path of freedom Every word of this flower garden they barter with a bomb
If a window opens the breadth of an eyelid, a pellet gun robs the eye of light Pepper guns make the air bitter, metonymy, a lung pogrom
This was written last year on September 28 [2016]. I saw a picture of a young girl who had been blinded and it moved me and made me cry. There is tremendous oppression here and we must raise our voices against it. As a poet, this is my protest against it. I can’t do anything else.
Did you ever think of returning your awards when artists across India were doing so to protest curbs on artistic and intellectual freedom? If not, why?
Had I been given any awards by the government, I would have returned them. The awards I have received are from literary organisations like Sahitya Academy, Jnanpith or Kabeer Samaan. These are not awards from politicians. The awards I have received were in recognition of the Kashmiri language. Why should I return them?
When I won the Jnanpith award, journalists asked me how I felt. I told them that with this award, the Kashmiri language has moved forward. Whether I, as a poet, moved forward or not, the Kashmiri language definitely has. This [Jnanpith award] was a recognition of the Kashmiri language. Why should I reject it? How can I reject it?
Kashmir witnessed a bloody summer in 2016 and nearly a hundred people were killed and hundreds lost eyesight. But there was no word from Kashmir’s greatest living poet. What was the reason for your silence?
It is totally wrong to say that I have been silent. I have written many poems in protest, not just last year but also in the turbulent nineties. I have written many poems about the oppression in Kashmir and the resistance as well. Not just me, but many poets have been actively writing.
I will recite a poem I wrote in 1990 and you tell me whether the accusations against me hold any truth. I once recited this poem at a political rally. I told the gathering they weren’t truly aware of what was happening. I told them that they might be in politics but they didn’t know much. The poem is titled Khak-e-Karbala, or the dust of Karbala, which is used by the faithful to heal the wounds inflicted as part of marsiya during Muharram. I sent the poem to many prominent newspapers at that time but no one published it.
In my recent collection Kadla Thatis Peth (On The Pier of the Bridge), there are a few poems that expressly talk about the present political situation. It’s not my fault that people don’t read. What can I do about it?
I will now recite some lines from Khak-e-Karbala:
Agar ni saanen chokken zabaan kanh Magar yi rath gassi ni raaiygan zanh
Phezaar dyitan beshoar keatil Yi daage laanath yi yas ni challnai
Yi rath mushuk saar boambran hyund Yi rath haya mand yemburzal’an hyund

Agar ni sannen chokken zabaan kanh Magar yi rath gassi ni raiy ganh zanh
Yi rath amanat chu Karbala huk Yi rath tas ni tehreer inqilab’uk
Zamaan hargah pricchev haqeeqat Dapyus reashe maale ker bagawat
I have recited this poem at many events in the presence of several leaders. There are five-six collections of my poetry that have poems about the political situation, and about my fundamental concern, which is of a man in this universe.
Do you think poets should remain distanced from the political life of the place they belong to or live in?
One cannot stay aloof at all. Politics is like air and it reaches everywhere. In Kashmir, if a man goes to a baker’s shop and finds that the size of the bread is not what he expected, politics over it will start. They will say "Yi ha kor hindustaanan (This is India’s handiwork)"(laughs). What happens in Kashmir on a day-to-day basis can make an artist politically conscious. But the artist or the poet doesn’t have to become a politician. He has to remain a poet. What does being a poet mean? It shouldn’t be only translating experience into verse but presenting it in such a way so that the reader sees himself/herself through that experience.
Poets can’t remain distanced from the politics of their place but they shouldn’t become victims of politics either. It’s one thing to do poetry and another to do sloganeering. Mehjoor and Azad did some bit of sloganeering, but they wrote wonderful poetry. Mehjoor’s most popular poem Wala Ha Bagwano is more of a slogan than poetry. Azad was an avowed Marxist. He used to agitate for farmers’ rights. They were great poets, and yet political.
What do you think is the role of a writer or intellectual in a place like Kashmir?
The primary role of a writer or poet is to agitate and protest through his craft alone. His role is to move the reader and to make him feel the agony. The poet doesn’t report. That is the journalist’s job. The journalist explains that this person was killed in these circumstances. The poet’s job is to depict the killing as if it happened in front of the reader, and as if the reader himself was being killed. The living reality of a poem should move the soul of the reader.
Craft and imagination is the key for writers and poets. Their craft should make the written word a living reality. The role of the poet is the creation and that is why it’s called takhleeq (creation) because what the poet sees and feels he translates (creates) onto the page.

2023.03.22 07:21 Other-Borderlands K♥️: Sanctuary [Part 1]

K♥️: Sanctuary [Part 1]
K♥️: Sanctuary [Part 1]
Venue: Church
This game is part of a series of games, where I am writing games for all 52 cards for a borderlands in the UK. Each one includes a story of how I imagine the game playing out. You can find all entries here.

Remaining Games
First Day of Exhibitions
He awaited his first lost sheep the morning the second round began. He stood at the churchyard gates, next to the sign he had put up the night before, which told players no external weaponry was permitted, and beneath read the name of the game, sanctuary, as well as a warning to players looking for a true game to visit the Jack or Queen of hearts.
He stood for half an hour after the start of the second phase, before a you man walked up to the gates, seeing him standing there.
“Hello my son! Do you wish to join my sanctuary, where we will live in peace with this world, free from future sin, to repent our past.” He said, and the man looked at him.
“Are you off your rocker?” The man said, and the King responded by pointing at his signs.
The man walked towards him, and into the churchyard.
“So what are the rules? What hab I got to do?” He asked.
“Nothing. Live here in harmony with god, and we will be forgiven. In this place you are given respite from the cruel games out there. While playing a game, your visa is frozen, and so by staying here you may live your life to the fullest.” The king explained, and the man turned.
“What? You mean this isn’t a game?” He asked.
“Well, of sorts. The game ends when I press the big red button on the church altar. The only rules are no violence, and no leaving the churchyard once you have entered.” He said.
The man tried to respond, but the King cut him off “Shall I give you a tour of the church?”
They walked inside, and the king showed him the area allocated to sleeping, rows upon rows of bunk beds in the main church hall. Further down, past the bunk beds, was a makeshift kitchen, with hobs, knives, chopping boards, everything one might need.
Next up, the King showed him his elaborate plans for the church, with various extra rooms in the church allocated to entertainment, medicine, etc, places in the churchyard for starting an allotment, a cabin, and some more projects.
They had plenty of food, materials and power stored, and they could easily create a self sustaining colony here. The more the pastor spoke, the more and more the man was convinced that this could truly become their home.
In a world of little hope, in the place where it was least expected to find some, the king of hearts, stood the hope of safety, and freedom from the games.
Once they had finished the tour, the king asked the man what he was best at, and what he would like to start work on.
“I’ve always enjoyed gardening…” The man said.
“Wonderful! I shall allocate you to the allotment to take care of our crops.” The King said, handing the man various equipment, as well as seeds, charts for what to plant next to each other, and sent him off to begin the work.
The King walked back to the churchyard gates, waiting another participant.
The sun rose higher in the sky, as a woman and two of her friends walked up.
“Who are you? You another participant?” She asked, and he responded.
“No, I am the King of hearts.” He took a bite from an apple. “This is sanctuary. Sanctuary from the games. If you step inside I can tell you more, but do not enter expecting a game like the others you have played.”
“I see the manipulation has already begun.” She said, stepping in, followed by her friends. “Right, tell me the rules.”
“The rules are simple. There is a button on the altar. If I press it, it is game clear for everyone. Violence and leaving the church premises are not permitted.” He said.
“What? That’s not a game!” She said.
“I did warn you before entering that this would not be like any of the other ‘games’ you have played.” The King said, “Now, should I show you around our colony?” He gave them a tour, showing them the bunks, the kitchen, the garden, the supplies, the whole church. As they walked, they began to feel the Kings silken word wrap around them, giving them hope. They were going to stay here, and spit in the face of whoever had created this cruel place. They would live together, in peace, until their deaths, within the church.
They all got to work, setting up the garden, improving the extra rooms, and they for the first time since they arrived here they truly felt free.
The King returned with his apple to the gate, awaiting more of gods children ready to join him in his colony in this uncaring world.
He had chosen to remain here, in this world of death and despair, as he felt it needed god more than any other. When he had been competing, it had been rumoured that the citizens were once players too, and after pulling through the King of hearts game, he decided he would stay, to bring god to the lives of the hopeless.
But this world made him even question the existence of god. He didn’t know how god could permit this, and all the countless other things in the old world continue to happen, yet held onto the hope that there was a god.
After all, why else would he have created this place?
Two more friends approached the venue, and the King told them as much as he was permitted to about the game. He had a thought, and brought one of the others of his colony to the gate, to tell them about the nature of this game.
This brought on the trust of the players, and he told them to spread the news that this place was a sanctuary.
They walked off, but he doubted that they would be believed, as he looked at the blimp above the church, the King of hearts waving in the wind. The idea that he would be a master of manipulation meant nobody would believe his good will until they enter the venue themselves, or at least got close.
Over the course of the day, two more people joined the colony, and as the sun went down he surveyed the progress that had been made. They had started their garden, meaning they would soon have self sufficient food supplies, likely soon after all that was already stored in the church ran out.
At around lunch time one person had begun working on a large soup, with carrots, potatoes, onions, and all of them graciously ate it, their first proper meal in weeks, maybe even months.
They then began to tell stories, in the well lit church, about their time here. The King gave them as much about him as they were permitted to know, and they were soon joined by one more person, who the King welcomed, and explained everything to.
Eventually they all went to sleep, free from the fear of ever having to participate in a game again.
The King surveyed his colonists, happy that they had all adapted to life here so easily. This place, while not perfect, was a veritable paradise compared to the world beyond the churchyard walls, and he was glad the others appreciated the effort he had put into it, and the effort they would put into it. He had intentionally made sure there was still plenty of work to be done to improve the church, as to stifle boredom. He had planned every detail, and knew it was perfect.
Second Day of Exhibitions
They woke up early, ready to continue the future of his utopia. They got to work on various projects, such as the allotment, and someone began work on the games room he had planned.
He helped out I the kitchen too, cutting veg and preparing meals for the day. He was cooking another soup today, while their vegetables were still few in number.
Over the course of the day more arrived, and he welcomed them. They were at first suspicious of his utopia, but he managed to convince them that this was for the greater good.
The Day was fruitful, and soon they had planted various vegetables, and were growing potatoes, carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes, as well as various fruits. He congratulated the gardeners, and then he checked out the games room.
It had been redecorated, and the Games organised. In fact, it had been done so quick the others had started work on the library, organising all of the books carefully in order of genre and author surname.
This place was becoming more and more like the Utopia he envisioned.
He poured some oil into the pan, before tipping in his diced onion, frying them a little, before adding water to boil the carrots and potatoes he had stocked up in. He made some vegetable stock from a pack he had in his spice cupboard, and with the help of the other cooks, they now had a meal for al of them. They filled it into bowls, handing them out to everyone in the church’s sanctuary, and they each ate gratefully, thanking him for his work, as well as the kindness of establishing this place.
They began to talk over such about what they had done so far.
“So, the allotment is looking good at the moment. By the time our stocked food will have run out, we should be swimming in produce of our own growing. Also, this soup is really nice Noah, you and the cooks did a great job!” The Gardener said, and Noah nodded, saying he couldn’t have achieved this without them.
The room brimmed with happiness, at the salvation these people had found in this world. That this was the way forward, the way to continued prosperity.
“Well, I improved the games room. That billiards table was a good idea Noah. Thanks also for bringing in so many board games and sets of cards. While we may not have always enjoyed them in the old world, I’m sure here they will become classics quickly, and we will play them till old age. Also, as you said earlier, I checked from the roof to see how many other cards are left. It looks like the King of Clubs, Queen of Spades, and Jack of Diamonds went down yesterday.” The Woman said.
“Thank you for informing me. We should hope and pray for those we have lost, they are now in a better place.” Noah said.
They continued to talk over their food, and just before they were about to return to work, a woman walked in through the doors.
“Hello, my child, welcome to sanctuary!” Noah said.
“Yeah yeah, quit the bullshit, tell me the rules.” She said.
“Well, The ‘game’ is simple. The game end when I press that button on the altar over there, willingly. Otherwise, you mustn’t leave the game venue, or act violently.” Noah explained. “This place is a sanctuary from the outside world. A refuge for those who have been crushed by the horrors of the Games.”
“What? What about Visas?” The Woman said confused.
“While in a game, your visa does not decrease. This place gives you time to live the rest of your days out, without the threat of the laser. This place is my Ark, if you will.” The King said, pointing to the church.
“This world makes it appear as if you must kill others to survive. That is not true. If you can resist the temptations of this world, you will receive salvation.”
Noah then gave the woman a tour of the grounds, before asking her what she wished to do. She ended up working in the garden, and Noah returned to the gates, to welcome any possible new colonists.
His sanctuary was coming to life, an example of how humans can collaborate and triumph in a world without hope.
No new people arrived after Sandra interrupted them at lunch, and the King gathered everyone around for tea and began to tell stories about his experiences.
“When I came to this world, I realised how important it was to trust god. I played the games set up by the old Kings, Queens and Knaves. They slowly fell, and when We had finally defeated them all, we were offered a choice by the ruler of this land. Stay, and accept citizenship, or decline. I accepted, to allow this land, a land without god, to see the light of good, and forge a beacon of hope for all who came.” Noah said, as his followers watched intently, and he began to recall his first games, the Jack and King of hearts, and how in the King game he had saved a young man, who grew to become the King of Clubs.
It became later and later, and Noah advised them to go to bed, telling them he would continue to tell them about his experiences the next day, and then the others could tell them theirs.
Third Day of Exhibitions
On the third day only one blimp went down, that of the Queen of Clubs.
Noah awoke bright and early, ready for the day. He slowly got everyone else up, while preparing breakfast. They ate in their own time, before leaving to go out and work.
Noah walked to the gates, apple in hand. He waited there for a few minutes, and watched as some new followers-to-be began to arrive.
He introduced himself, giving his regular explanation, and before they stepped inside, was backed up by one of the gardeners, who happened to be walking past. The group stepped inside, introducing themselves as Alfie, Tracy and Roger, a group that had beaten the King of Clubs together.
“A shame. The King of Clubs was a good man.” Noah said, leading them into the main hall.
“He definitely wasn’t what I expected from a King, to say the least.” Tracy said. “Neither are you.”
“The manipulation is still to come.” Alfie said, not trusting Noah.
“Well, I can assure you that I have all of the residents of this countries best interests in mind. We could live here for many years without problem. Just ask any of the other players that have stayed with us for a while, they all trust me.” Noah countered.
He walked up to the altar.
“This here is the game clear condition. If I press it, I die, and our colony is terminated. The game ends, everyone gets a game clear. I have no intention of doing so.” Noah said.
“So you are our jailor.” Alfie said to him.
“If you need to see it that way, yes.” Noah said. “But in truth I am your saviour. Without me you would soon be playing another game. You would live in fear of your life. Here, that all fades away. You regain free time, as you need to care less and less about your own survival. Don’t you see the utopia we will forge?”
Alfie shrugged.
“Now, if you will please allow me to ask what jobs you would be comfortable doing…” He asked.
He got them all started on their tasks, and the day went smoothly. He spent a while talking with Roger as they prepared food, talking about his life, and soon they called everyone in for Lunch.
In the meantime, tracy had begun speaking to Sandra, and learned about her. Alfie, on the other hand, had remained distant from the others, refusing to participate in work.
He walked over to Roger and Tracy while they were eating their food.
“Don’t you find this a little suspicious? He’s way to kind for someone who’s gone through what we’ve been through. I don’t trust this guy one bit.” Alfie said.
“Why, all he’s done is be nice to us!?” Tracy said. “He’s forged a home for us in this uncaring world. How can you disagree with that?”
“He’s already gotten to you. Don’t you see? He’s indoctrinating you. This is a cult!” Alfie protested, perhaps a little too loud.
“Now, how about we all calm down a little.” Noah said, walking over. “I see our new member wishes to leave. Trust me Alfie, it’s Alfie right? This place will be our beacon of hope, our zone of safety. Please, don’t fight us. It’ll only harm you.”
Alfie nodded, but still had a scowl fixed on his face.
“Good. Now, how about we all return to work, and reconvene later for tea.” He said, walking away.
The others returned to work, and Alfie was left alone in the Hall.
Noah turned. “You should also get to work. It won’t reflect well on you if you eat our food but don’t help out.”
Roger had by this point returned to the garden. He liked gardening, and had constantly recommended the performers establish one while they were still in large numbers, so they would have a continued food supply. He gave up on the idea after continued rejection, and the dwindling number of performers meant there was almost no point, they all believed they would die anyway.
But now he had a communal garden, where he could help a group of people he cared about. He dug, and planted some seeds. They were almost out of the space allocated. Oh well, they would always need to attend to plants to help them grow. He wasn’t sure how well they would grow in this strange climate, but he held out hope.
He spent the hours until dusk in the garden with a man who claimed he was the first to join Noah. They exchanged trivial details about their lives, as well as their time in this land. They both admired Noah for his ability to create hop in a world without it, and how he kept order in a world seemingly without any.
When they gathered around for Noah’s story and food, they listened intently, hearing about his exploits during his time as a player, how he had helped those in need. How he had not killed anyone during his time as a player.
Alfie watched from afar, seeing how the group worshiped the ground he walked on. Why couldn’t anyone but him see it?

2023.03.22 07:21 Expecting_The_Best New adventure, jump for the joy of life

I'm lookin for a kick in the ass kind of. I realize having a woman in my life and starting a family would fuel a lot in my determination.
About me:
Now I am going to talk myself up something fierce here, but take every bit of information you read as my inner truth. While I don't mean that in a way of "personal truth which affects no one but me and my little world", but inner truth that is a reality which affects the outer.
I am a creative, writer, and overall lowkey genius type. I have lots of multi-million dollar projects on my drawing board and a to-dolist which includes being big on a level not reflecting my current status in life. Honestly I am motivated on a level, but I procrastinate a ton and now that I am 40, I'm really finding the desire to shift gears. I'm way past the stage of saying I have potential as it just sounds a bit pathetic at my age. So thats my current motivation and its probably enough. That being said I am just throwing this last bit of fishing line out there before I become the stable individual whom I know will have no trouble finding a woman. I think what I want is a connection with someone who can see me for who I am without any financial showings. I'm deeply into people and I want someone who connects with me in the logical world. A meeting of the minds is more important to me than status or lifestyle. As I am a person who has lived many different lives in my little 40 years on this earth, one thing I do know is that change is the only constant. I fully expect whomever I am with to be capable of growing and adapting as I have.
So in short: I am a fully realized being who is capable of both emotional intelligence and indepth human connection. I find my balance in both emotion and logic is a thriving for both man and woman. I'm all about balance and logic. I'm a capricorn. I have a deep love of God and I always strive to understand more about the great puzzle of life. (not in any traditional religious sense) Not mediocre in any sense of my mental understandings and I want to start a family because I know that I have a lot to give in regards to my knowledge and understanding. Not really a direction most average people are looking for. I have no kids atm and I have always wanted to get that part of my life right. I know that I want my kids to grow up never knowing poverty so I know that would be a great motivation and doing things for others has always been a great motivator for me.

2023.03.22 07:21 nIBLIB [Spoilers All] Start of Kvothe’s story

When Kote first begins to tell his story, there’s a lot of fuss as to where. What point in Kvothe’s life marks the start of his life. His first thought is here:
"In some ways, it began when I heard her singing. Her voice twinning, mixing with my own. Her voice was like a portrait of her soul: wild as a fire, sharp as shattered glass, sweet and clean as clover."
Denna’s significants to Kvothe story is unquestionable, and it’s so high that Kvothe thinks his life story begins with her.
But it’s not quite right. You can’t start with Kvothe earning his pipes. It needs context. It needs Kvothe’s time at the university. What lead him to earning his pipes.
Kvothe shook his head. "No. It began at the University. I went to learn magic of the sort they talk about in stories. Magic like Taborlin the Great. I wanted to learn the name of the wind. I wanted fire and lightning. I wanted answers to ten thousand questions and access to their archives. But what I found at the University was much different than a story, and I was much dismayed.
Still not quite right. In needing Kvothe being at the university, it needs what lead to Kvothe joining the university:
"But I expect the true beginning lies in what led me to the University. Unexpected fires at twilight. A man with eyes like ice at the bottom of a well. The smell of blood and burning hair. The Chandrian." He nodded to himself. "Yes. I suppose that is where it all begins. This is, in many ways, a story about the Chandrian."
But you also can’t start with Kvothe stumbling back to his camp to find his dead parents and the Chandrian. So Kvothe takes one step back, and decides to start a few months earlier.
This is where Kote begins telling his life’s story. And as a story teller, this is the best starting place.
But it’s also not quite correct, is it?
It’s definitely where you start the story as a storyteller. But if the true beginning lies with meeting the Chandrian, then the Chandrian are the beginning.
So let’s do the same process. Where do the Chandrian start?
Lanre's shoulders bowed. "I had hoped," he said simply. "But I knew the truth. I am no longer the Lanre you knew. Mine is a new and terrible name. I am Haliax and no door can bar my passing. All is lost to me, no Lyra, no sweet escape of sleep, no blissful forgetfulness, even madness is beyond me. Death itself is an open doorway to my power. There is no escape. I have only the hope of oblivion after everything is gone and the Aleu fall nameless from the sky." And as he said this Lanre hid his face in his hands, and his body shook with silent, racking sobs.
The Chandrian’s story begins at the destruction of Myr Tariniel. Lanre betrays Selitos, and takes on a new name. His actions lead to the end of the war, and the creation of the Chandrian. But the true beginning isn’t here. Like Kvothe singing with Denna, we need context. What caused the war?
Felurian’s expression went solemn. She unlaced her fingers from mine and looked down at the stone in her hand. “that was the end of it all.” She sighed. “until he stole the moon there was some hope for peace.”

“Who was it?” I asked.

Felurian shook her head, amused. “no. as I said, this was before the fae. the first and greatest of the shapers.”
The first and greatest shaper stole the moon, and in stealing the moon, caused the war. This is the true beginning of the Chandrian. But, like with Kvothe, we need context. Why did the first and greatest shaper steal the moon? And where was it stolen from and to? Like Kote, we take one step backwards:
She laughed at my tone. “no. the faen realm.” she waved widely. “wrought according to their will. the greatest of them sewed it from whole cloth. a place where they could do as they desired. and at the end of all their work, each shaper wrought a star to fill their new and empty sky.”
Felurian smiled at me. “then there were two worlds. two skies. two sets of stars.” She held up the smooth stone. “but still one moon. and it all round and cozy in the mortal sky.”
Her smile faded. “but one shaper was greater than the rest. for him the making of a star was not enough. he stretched his will across the world and pulled her from her home.”
‘The greatest of them’ is a tricky label. It can be collective or individual. But Felurian isn’t the only source for this story. Hespe also tells us a story of the boy who stole the moon, and he had no help in unfolding his house.
Other shapers may have come afterwards and added furniture and artwork, but it was the boy who stole the moon who built the house. And as the first and greatest of them, Jax is the greatest of them. He built the house - or in Felurian’s words shapers made the Faen realm wrought according to their will. The Faen realm was the greatest of them sewed it from whole cloth - pure fabrications - as a place for the others to do as they desired before each creating a star.
So there we have it, Kvothe’s story begins with the Chandrian, and the Chandrian’s story begins when the first shaper created the Fae from nothing.
Now we arrive at the title: Kvothe’s story begins with the creation of the Fae. And in arriving here you may have noticed that I skipped a piece at the start. One piece of Kote deciding on where to start his story.
"Yes. I suppose that is where it all begins. This is, in many ways, a story about the Chandrian."
"But what would my father say if he heard me telling a story this way? 'Begin at the beginning.' Very well, if we are to have a telling, let's make it a proper one."
Kvothe sat forward in his chair. "In the beginning, as far as I know, the world was spun out of the nameless void by Aleph, who gave everything a name. Or, depending on the version of the tale, found the names all things already possessed."
In the beginning [of my story], as far as I know, the [faen] world was spun out of the nameless void [whole cloth] by Iax, who gave everything [within the fae] a name.

2023.03.22 07:21 anonymousse71 Need second opinion, doubting derm’s diagnosis. Ringworm or nummular dermatitis?

30F 200lbs, former smoker, not currently taking any medications.
I first noticed a spot on my chest/abdomen on March 10. Spot did not itch, initially thought it was just a random pimple/bump on me before it became more ring like. After googling i thought it could potentially be ringworm due to its looks and started using an old (unexpired) prescription antifungal cream i had for another time when I had ringworm that day. I went to a derm on 3/20 to check in on the spot, they told me that they didn’t think it looked fungal and said it was likely nummular dermatitis. No biopsy or scraping was taken at this appointment. I was told to finish off the prescription cream and then use a steroid cream on the spot. I was happy to know it wasn’t ringworm, but second guessing the diagnosis after the spot has seemed to made better improvement from Monday to Tuesday. I got lax after my derm visit, and I don’t want to spread something around. Since the initial spot I’ve developed some more spots on me, and the one on my arm concerns me for ringworm too. This spot did not seem to concern the derm.
I have a cat, though she is indoors only and is the only cat in my house. Potential exposure from the gym and baths, not sure what else i could’ve come into contact with.
the spot on my arm is tiny, maybe a quarter to half an inch at most. tends to look shiny and slightly red, has not grown since starting to treat it (later than the initial spot since it popped up later). this spot also doesn’t itch.
Any help appreciated.

2023.03.22 07:21 Tigreal Patch Notes 1.7.68 - Org. Server

From The Designers

For the upcoming March season, aside from the usual hero adjustments, we've also optimized the gameplay of some older heroes such as Layla and Freya. We hope they'll be back with a spring in their step, ready to shine upon the battlefield!
We've also optimized 6 lesser-used equipment (Sea Halberd, Necklace of Durance, Twilight Armor, Rose Gold Meteor, Blood Wings and Thunder Belt) and 2 Battle Spells (Aegis and Revitalize) to hopefully make them more viable options in battle.
Additionally, for the upcoming Season 28, we will be launching a new Mythic system with a new rank, new Display Logos for Mythic ranks, and optimized the Mythic Points system into the Stars system. Reach 25 and 50 stars in Mythic to get upgraded appearances for Mythic stars.
We've also optimized the Placement Match experience and added a new Mythic Rank Exclusive Skin Voting system (avaliable after reaching Mythic rank, vote for 1 out of 6 heroes).
Added "Road to Mythic" challenges at Mythic rank that will grant the S28 Profile Namecard Background and Personal Profile Background. Reach Mythical Glory rank to upgrade them. Good luck in the new season!

I. New & Revamped Heroes

[Revamped Hero: Courageous Warrior - Minsitthar]
[Spear of Glory] and [King's Calling] are Minsitthar's core skills, so we've kept their gameplay the same (with some optimizations) in this revamp.
In addition, we've redesigned his Skill 2 and Passive to provide more damage and control to his kit. This redesign focuses on maintaining his roaming role while exploring the possibility of taking the Exp Lane.
We've also given Minsitthar a complete makeover. With this revamp, the courageous warrior shall reclaim his rightful glory!
Hero Features: A courageous warrior who excels in battle with spear and shield.
[Passive: Mark of the King]
Minsitthar's Basic Attacks and skills apply a stack of Mark of the King. Upon reaching 5 stacks, the next attack will detonate all Marks to deal a large amount of damage and stun the target, and restore HP to Minsitthar.
[Skill 1: Spear of Glory]
When pulling back his spear, Minsitthar will pull all enemy heroes in its path to him.
[Skill 2: Shield Assault]
Minsitthar holds up his shield, reducing incoming damage from the front for a period of time.
While in this stance, Minsitthar's Basic Attacks will hit all enemies in a rectangular area and have increased Attack Speed.
[Ultimate: King's Calling]
Minsitthar's Ultimate now prevents all enemies in its area from using all movement abilities.
Summoned Royal Guards can also trigger Minsitthar's equipment effects with their attacks.
Slightly increased the cast range.
Reduced the effect's duration.

II. Hero Adjustments

The following heroes have undergone significant adjustments in this patch: Joy, Freya, Layla, Wanwan, Badang, Esmeralda and Eudora.
The following uses (↑) (↓) (~) to indicate Buff, Nerf, and Adjustment.
[Joy] (~)
Joy has impressive durability, but her burst potential is a bit lacking in the mid-to-late game. As such, we're making it harder for her to gain durability while increasing her damage to fit her role as an Assassin.
[Passive] (~)
Removed the shield effect.
New Effect: Joy's skills now deal an additional instance of damage each time they hit a non-Minion unit.
[Skill 2] (~)
Max Uses: 5 >> 4
New Effect: Gain a shield when hitting on beat.
[Ultimate] (~)
Number of Skill 2 casts required to unlock: 5 >> 4
New Effect: Gain Physical & Magic Defense during Ultimate.
Damage increase after hitting on beat: 30% >> 40% (max damage when hitting all beats is the same)
[Freya] (↑)
While Freya has great sustainability, she plays more or less the same as other heroes that rely on Basic Attacks. So, we're making it easier for her to chain her skill combos, and in some circumstances, indefinitely. We're also improving the feel of Spirit Combo and Leap of Faith, and that of Freya's combos as a whole. Her shield and damage in the early-mid game have been adjusted to keep things balanced.
[Skill 1] (~)
Skill 1 is no longer enhanced by Sacred Orb nor does it cost any Sacred Orbs.
Can move through obstacles more easily.
[Skill 2] (↑)
Skill casts needed to trigger leaping strike: 3 >> 2
Reworked how the cooldown works: Cooldown is no longer triggered after the leaping strike, instead it triggers after not continuing to cast the skill within a certain period.
Slightly reduced the foreswing time of the leaping strike.
Airborne Duration: 0.5s >> 0.4s
Base Damage: 130-230 (+90% Total Physical Attack) >> 20-230 (+90% Total Physical Attack)
Final Damage: 156-276 (+108% Total Physical Attack) >> 26-276 (+108% Total Physical Attack)
Shield: 160-260 (+70% Extra Physical Attack) >> 60-260 (+70% Extra Physical Attack)
[Layla] (↑)
As a Marksman without Blink, Layla has trouble with survivability. We hope the following changes will allow her to kite enemies more efficiently and increase her skill cap. We've reduced a bit of her damage to balance these buffs.
[Basic Attack & Skills] (↑)
Greatly reduced backswing time to allow her to move and attack more efficiently.
[Attribute] (↓)
Physical Attack Growth: 9 >> 7.5
[Passive] (↓)
Maximum Damage Increase: 135% >> 130%
[Skil 2] (↑)
Changed the slow effect from mark detonations to a 0.25s AOE stun.
Only marks the first target hit.
[Wanwan] (~)
With fewer Weaknesses to hit, more players have been enjoying Wanwan, but it also made it harder for her opponents to counter her Ultimate. Therefore, we want to make it easier to escape her Ultimate while not affecting her power. After the changes, the locked target can more easily get out of lock range, and frontline heroes can move to block Wanwan's crossbow attacks to tank the damage. To compensate, we buffed Wanwan's damage, and how much she gains from Movement Speed bonuses in the early and mid game (Wanwan should get extra Movement Speed to take advantage of this).
[Passive] (↑)
All Weaknesses Hit Damage: 55-97 >> 70-112
[Ultimate] (↓)
Lock Range: 8.5 >> 6
Speed Boost while in the air: 10% Total Movement Speed >> 100% Extra Movement Speed
[Badang] (↓)
Badang has become too dominant in this version with the buff to Knockback effects. We've moderately reduced his damage in the early and mid game for balance.
[Skill 1] (↓)
Base Damage: 160-260 >> 125-225
Explosion Damage: 120-195 >> 100-175
[Ultimate] (↓)
Base Damage: 80-140 >> 60-120
Explosion Damage: 40-70 >> 30-60
[Esmeralda] (↑)
We've slightly increased Esmeralda's damage to make her more competitive compared to other Exp Laners.
[Basic Attack] (↑)
First Damage: 80% Physical Attack >> 100% Physical Attack
Second Damage: 100 +55% Magic Power >> 100 +75% Magic Power
[Skill 2] (↑)
Cooldown: 5.5-3.5s >> 4.5-3.5s
[Eudora] (↑)
We want players to be able to use Eudora's skills based on the situation, instead of always starting with Skill 2.
[Attributes] (↑)
HP Growth: 142.5 >> 160.5
[Skill 2] (↑)
Orb of Lightning bounce's Stun Duration: 0.6s >> 0.9s
[Lesley] (↑)
We've slightly buffed Lesley's damage because the meta has been favouring Attack Speed Marksmen.
Passive (↑)
Base Damage:50 >> 75
[Skill 1] (↑)
Cooldown: 5-3s >> 4-2.5s
[Paquito] (↑)
We've slightly buffed Paquito's durability in the mid and late game to fit his role as a fighter.
[Skill 1] (↑)
Shield: 150-500 +110% Physical Attack >> 150-650 +135% Physical Attack
[Fredrinn] (↓)
Slightly reduced the damage of Fredrinn's Ultimate when not enhanced.
[Skill 2] (↓)
Base Damage: 200-300 >> 140-215
[Skill 3] (↓)
Base Damage: 300-500 >> 210-330

III. Battlefield Adjustments

[New Map]

The brand-new map "Harmonia" is available free for a limited-time! Featuring a new design, with new models, effects, and more. And the "Harmonia" Lord is stepping into the fray, too. Check it out!
[Lord] (↑)
The Enhanced Lord can now use Turret Clash against all turrets it encounters after the 12-minute mark, instead of only the first one.

[Equipment]

[Sea Halberd] (↑)
We don't want Physical Damage heroes to lose much damage output when using this equipment.
[Unique Passive - Punish] (New)
Increase damage by 8% against enemy heroes with more extra HP than you.
[Necklace of Durance] (↑)
Optimized the build path to better fit some mages and supports.
[Build Path]
Mystic Container >> Elegant Gem (Necklace of Durance attributes modified accordingly)
[New Passive] (↑)
Gift (the effect is the same as Elegant Gem)
[Twilight Armor] (Revamped)
We've noticed that most tanks focus on absorbing damage instead of dealing damage, so we've changed this equipment to help against burst damage and also made it more versatile.
[Unique Passive - Twilight] (Revamped)
When taking more than 600 damage in a single hit, the excess amount will be reduced by 300 +5% of Max HP. Cooldown: 5s.
[Rose Gold Meteor] (↑)
Rose Gold Meteor has been overshadowed by Athena's Shield, so we've changed its function to help heroes escape when the passive triggers.
[Attributes] (↑)
Physical Lifesteal: 5% >> 10%
[Build Path] (~)
Magic Blade + Dagger >> Magic Blade + Vampire Mallet
[Unique Passive - Lifeline] (↑)
Shield: 510-1350 >> 840-1820
Removed Effect: Increase Magic Defense by 25 for 3s when triggered.
New Effect: Increase Movement Speed by 50% when triggered, the effect decays over 3 seconds.
Cooldown: 40s >> 60s
[Magic Blade] (↑)
[Unique Passive - Lifeline] (↑)
Shield: 280-700 >> 420-910
Removed Effect: Increase Magic Defense by 12 for 3s when triggered.
New Effect: Increase Movement Speed by 50% when triggered, the effect decays over 3 seconds.
Cooldown: 40s >> 60s
[Blood Wings] (↑)
Optimized Effect: Now when the shield is attacked, it will be restored after 30s even if it's not destroyed.
Cooldown: 30s >> 20s
New Effect: Increase Movement Speed by 30 when shield is active.
[Thunder Belt] (↑)
Thunder Belt is too costly for roaming tanks, so we're reducing its price and boosting its Mana Regen.
[Cost] (↑)
2290 >> 1990
[Attributes] (↑)
Mana Regen: 6 >> 10
[Clock of Destiny] (↓)
Reduced the survivability it granted to burst damage mages.
[Attributes] (↓)
HP: 625 >> 500
[Unique Passive - Time] (↓)
Each stack grants 20 HP (was 25).
[Ice Queen Wand] (↑)
Increased the survivability it granted to sustained damage mages.
[Attributes] (↑)
New: 300 HP
Removed: 150 Mana
[Fleeting Time] (↑)
Optimized Effect: Certain heroes with Ultimates that enter cooldown after their duration is over now also gain cooldown reduction from kills and assists during their Ultimate's duration.
Includes: Faramis, Yve, Luo Yi, Leomord, Baxia, Hanzo, Granger, Edith, Aldous.
[Dominance Ice] (↑)
We want this piece of equipment to be more effective against heroes with high attack speed.
[Unique Passive - Arctic Cold] (↑)
The attack speed reduction is now calculated after all attack speed bonuses.
Lowers nearby enemy heroes' Attack Speed to: 75% >> 70%
[Black Ice Shield] (↑)
[Unique Passive - Arctic Cold] (↑)
The attack speed reduction is now calculated after all attack speed bonuses.
Lowers nearby enemy heroes' Attack Speed to: 90% >> 85%

[Battle Spells]

We've adjusted [Aegis] and [Revitalize] to more clearly differentiate them from [Vengeance]. Heroes of different roles should now have more viable choices for defensive Battle Spells.
[Aegis] (↑)
Aegis works well enough to protect heroes with low HP in the early game, but the shield is too flimsy in the mid and late game compared to how much hero damage ramps up.
Shield: 750 + 50Hero Level >> 750 + 90Hero Level
Removed the effect of granting shield to nearby allied hero.
Cooldown: 90s >> 75s
[Revitalize] (~)
The effect will now move with its caster, making it more suitable for Supports.

[Role Adjustments]

As the meta evolves, certain heroes have gone through a lot of changes compared to their original playstyle and abilities. Therefore, we decided to update their roles to better fit their playstyle.
  • Grock: Tank >> Tank/Fighter
  • Johnson: Tank >> Tank/Support
  • Carmilla: Support >> Support/Tank
  • Kaja: FighteSupport >> Support/Fighter
  • Ruby: FighteTank >> Fighter
  • Fredrinn: Tank/Fighter >> FighteTank
  • Paquito: Fighter >> FighteAssassin
  • Yin: Fighter >> FighteAssassin
  • Benedetta: Assassin >> Assassin/Fighter
  • Harley: Mage/Assassin >> Assassin/Mage >

[Lane Position Adjustments]

  • Silvanna: Exp Lane/Jungling >> Exp Lane/Roaming
  • Cyclops: Mid Lane >> Mid Lane/Jungling
Removed Jungling classification from the following heroes: Lapu-Lapu, Argus, Selena, Masha, Popol and Kupa.

2023.03.22 07:21 ZackYuan88 Trying to find a porn movie which is no later than 2002. I remembered the first and second scenes.

It was a porn movie no later than 2002, the first scene was a woman who is taking a bath in a bathtub. And her partner was not in the bathtub but he put his arm inside the bathtub then go down under the water, then they began to make out.
Later they went into the bedroom to start the major part of the first scene. The man was blond and has a ponytail, the woman has a long black (brown or blond?) hair. After this, she was talking to some friend over the phone, then she got to a mansion where seems to be a brothel. The lady who’s in charge ask the woman to go to a room, to watch how the other girl taking care of a man. Just watching but not doing anything, that was the second scene. In the second scene, the man was a brown short hair.
More things to add:
  1. The man from the first scene was a popular porn actor, I had this assumption cause I've seen him also in other movies. He has a unique blond ponytail.
  2. The company’s logo was a mixed together logo which contains a girl and a word, red color with white background. Maybe "Pornerotica" or something similar to it.
It was the first AV that I've ever saw when I was a teenager and don't understand English yet.
Thanks a lot for the help!

2023.03.22 07:20 JustMadeThus New to Blood Meridian, question about Captain White?

[minor spoilers] I’m new to Westerns, but Blood Meridian lives up to and exceeds the praise I heard about it. Matter of fact, it’s maybe not even a Western. The Man with no Name Trilogy is a Spaghetti Western. Unforgiven is an anti-Western. Is Blood Meridian an anti-Western?
Whatever it is, somehow it feels both incredibly brutal and incredibly Theological. Those things are part of being human I guess?
Little details matter in this book. We learn Toadvine got branded on his face for committing a crime, but the extra detail that explains the branding iron was left on a bit too long really highlights the world of violence we’re in for.
Which brings me to my question about Captain White! (About time lol). My interpretation, I don’t mean to offend anyone who’s patriotic about the U.S. Military, so keep that in mind as I explain what his character means to me.
The boy cracks bottles over the head and gouges out the eye of a bartender who doesn’t “speak American” and it’s all based on a misunderstanding. This violence could have been avoided, but we choose our path in life and the boy’s path leads him to pass out drunk in a church.
Ironically enough, this senseless act of violence gets him noticed by Captain White’s recruiter. For consequentialist reasons and not moral ones, the boy agrees to meet Captain White.
I believe Captain White represents the ugly side of Protestantism and Racism being used as justifications for war in American History. The contradictory way he talks about Mexico, the way he mentions the Monroe doctrine, his implication that Mexicans “deserve” to be governed by civilized White Protestant Christians.
I think there’s a reason the author compares men of God to men of War.
Now my bias may be showing here from my Christian faith.
I mentioned this book is very Theological. I personally think McCarthy wants to believe in Jesus and/or a higher power of some kind, but the ugliness of history makes it hard for him to do so.
…does any of this make any sense? I love this book, and if my interpretation is wrong, feel free to brand me with an iron that says “TR” for talkative redditor. Lol.

2023.03.22 07:20 Crimson_roses1 Please Critique my MC memory chapter

Peyre was a miracle.
Years before he was born, Cecilia’s mother had gotten sick. It was a terrible sickness that stole the breath from her lungs and the strength from her legs. She was trapped in her bed for months with no real news from the doctors and consultants.
Cecilia would watch strangers from all corners of the world walk into the room her mother was trapped in. They had all kinds of education and spiritual presence. Monks from Theai-Tror, witch doctors from Astium, and highly skilled doctors from Caskel. Every single one of them walked out, shaking their heads and whispering soft apologies to her father.
They would give Cecilia a sad look or give her a small toy to make her feel better. Cecilia hated them. Hated the piles of empty promises in her room. She would listen to them tell her father over and over and over again, that there was nothing they could do.
One day, a new doctor arrived at the house. A tall imposing woman whose reddish-brown skin stuck out among the pale faces around her. She spoke slow and loudly, her thick speech not used to Otril’s delicate language.
The woman introduced herself as Balke, the chosen shaman of Scoaya. Balke had heard of the sickness plaguing the matron of the La Dubois family and left her country to help. Cecilia’s father was wary, beaten down by failure after failure, but he led Balke to his wife.
It was hours before the shaman left the room. The sky had darkened and a quiet hush fell around the mountain valley. When Balke came out, she was smiling. Two streaks of ash were smeared under her eyes and down her cheeks. She grabbed Cecilia’s father’s hands and held them for a moment, head bowed. Balke explained the sickness to him, telling him that his wife would recover if her faith was strong enough. In the same breath, the shaman explained how she wouldn’t be able to have another child.
After Balke had left, Cecilia snuck into her mother’s room. She saw her father standing over the bedridden woman, holding her limp hand in his own. She listened to him quietly whisper her name.
“Lecia.”
It was the first time Cecilia had really seen her mother after she fell ill. Her once vibrant red hair was dulled and her pale skin had a sickly sheen. Her brown eyes were dull and full of tears as she looked at her husband.
Cecilia’s mother did eventually recover, yet she could still barely stand or walk. Anyone could tell the sickness had an effect on her by looking at her eyes. They had dulled permanently, left unfocused and dazed as if she was in another world. Her mother didn’t smile, didn’t react to Cecilia when she tried to hold her hand or speak to her. Her father said that her heart was broken, torn to a point neither of them could fix it.
Then Peyre was born. Seven years after Cecilia, two years after being told he would never be.
After two years, Her mother smiled.
Peyre was small, with soft brown hair and blue eyes. He was the apple of their mother’s eye; a cherished angel sent from the Goddess.
He was a gift, sent from the Goddess herself. It was the only explanation. Cecilia could have hated him, yet she didn’t. For two years she was ignored and shunned by her mother, unable to make her smile. But Peyre did.
So Cecilia didn’t hate him. He brought back the mother she missed, healed her broken heart. She cherished her little brother, loved him with every ounce she could.
The day her family was attacked, Cecilia understood what her mother went through. The pain she had felt; a pain so strong it felt like Guillaume pulled her heart out with his bare hands. A pain that left her numb. A pain that left a hole in her chest. A hole that was ripped open little by little every time she looked at Guillaume.
This hole in Cecilia’s chest was not filled with a mind-numbing depression like her mother. Hers was filled with rage. A bitter, burning anger at Guillaume. An anger at the Goddess who gave her family a miracle with one hand and stabbed them in the back with the other.
Cecilia’s heart was consumed with a dark anger that festered in the background.

2023.03.22 07:19 RustFallerMastodon The Dark Side of the Human Mind

The Dark Side of the Human Mind - A deep dive into everything the humans don’t want to talk about.
Written by Mirassi Vanghli
Posted on a Venlil discussion forum. Exact date unknown, as it was quickly removed by moderators and spam reuploaded by users.

INTRO
I’ve been stuck on how to write a beginning to this post for some time now. I’ve filled databanks upon databanks of research into this work, but the beginning always eluded me. I think now, after all of it, the only way I can start this is by starting with myself.
My name is Mirassi. I’m a Venlil, probably one of the most average Venlil physically you will ever meet. I don’t even stick out that much in the way I act or speak, so you would probably pass over me without a second glance, and would probably not even notice me even if you had met me millions of times. Just another reed of a Prinyat.
However, there is something far different about me, I’ve buried it so deeply inside all these years, and for the most part it’s completely inconsequential for my everyday life.
Whenever I get that instinctual fear response in my chest, I like it. Not to a suicidal state, mind you, it’s not a true predators disease. But enough to take interest in having a fake sort of fear. To absolutely adore the parts everyone hates about Season 4 of The Exterminators. To read up on the classifications of predators a bit in my spare time.

Speh.
This didn’t help at all.
I got stuck again, so let me just skip to the important bit.
I signed up for the Human-Venlil exchange program. I wanted to get that feeling of fear, but I finally just wanted the other claw to pass. It wasn’t enough. The human I met was adorable. They chose the best for first contact. No Venlil alive knows what exactly the humans are truly capable of. Not even the Venlils who “researched” them for first contact. I looked at those notes before, they don’t go beyond the eyes.
So with my exchange partner, I asked him for the worst. Not the illusion we made, but the true worst parts of themselves that even they seemed to be scared of.
After digging through human history and myth, I found it.
I’m not scared. Scared is the jolt I get from the animal level of my brain from seeing figures in the shadows of a forest canopy.
I’m terrified.
The bloodthirsty predator that everyone thinks of when someone mentions a Human that rips apart Venlil with its bare hands now feels so comical to me. Almost comforting in its simplicity.
So I wanted to document this horror. Partly for my own sake. Partly because some people might finally get some closure on their fear, by seeing the whole picture instead of letting speculation get the best of them.
But most of all, as a cautionary tale. What makes Humans scary isn’t going to be revealed just because you looked at them wrong or because you ran away too fast or because you just offended their “predator instincts”.
Humans are kind creatures. Capable of far more empathy and kindness then we can ever give them credit for. Especially now when the entire galaxy has put that empathy through so much strain and pressure.
But even more than that, Humans are afraid of themselves. Arguably deeper than any Federation devout can ever claim. There is a part of them so dangerous, so cruel, that even they had to lock it away. That even after their homeworld was bombed to smithereens, they are still unwilling to fully use it.
Because it was so dangerous that it almost destroyed their entire species.
And if they believe that in the end, the bitter end, that the survival of all that they hold dear relies on that lock finally coming off?
They will open that box.
And even they will cry over your suffering.
Oh yeah, and you’ll also learn some fun facts about humans while reading this. Have fun!

2023.03.22 07:17 Regular-Lead5793 The Cross

Torture stake
The rendering of the Greek word stau·rosʹ, meaning an upright stake or pole, such as the one on which Jesus was executed. There is no evidence that the Greek word meant a cross, such as the pagans used as a religious symbol for many centuries before Christ. “Torture stake” conveys the full intent of the original word, since the word stau·rosʹ is also used to indicate the torture, suffering, and shame that Jesus’ followers would face. (Mt 16:24; Heb 12:2)
Stake
An upright pole to which a victim was fastened. It was used in some nations for execution and/or for exposing a dead body as a warning to others or for public humiliation. The Assyrians, noted for their savage warfare, impaled captives by hanging their bodies atop pointed stakes that had been run up through the abdomen into the chest cavity of the victim. In Jewish law, though, those guilty of such heinous crimes as blasphemy or idolatry were first killed by stoning or by some other method, and then their dead bodies were hung on stakes, or trees, as warning examples to others. (De 21:22, 23; 2Sa 21:6, 9) The Romans sometimes simply tied a victim to the stake, in which case he might live for several days before he died from pain, thirst, hunger, and exposure to the sun. In other cases, such as the execution of Jesus, they nailed the hands and feet of the accused to a stake. (Lu 24:20; Joh 19:14-16; 20:25; Ac 2:23, 36)

2023.03.22 07:16 pwa09 I just need to cry out - please read

I’ve been operating at 110% for a while now. A good while. I’ve got a husband and 3 kids, and my life is utterly relentless. I am not my own individual self anymore. I basically exist to serve everyone else. I do every damn thing. Yes there is a man that lives here that “helps” but how helpful is it when I have to constantly tell the man what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, how to do it, when the kids need something, what time their appointments are, etc. I have 2 toddlers and 1 preteen. My house is akin to a zoo on crack. There’s lights on all day, because the man that lives here doesn’t seem to know how to turn off a light, the toddlers don’t nap anymore, and they are always hungry but never seem to take more than 2 bites of food, my preteen rolls her eyes at everything, husband works nights and can somehow sleep through every thing and I wouldn’t be surprised if he slept right through a tornado. My home is no longer my sanctuary because it’s become a place of high stress. I am literally on my feet from 6am to 10pm with my only break being the job I work at. I work full time and get to spend my 2 days off doing everything my husband just disregards all week, such as the grocery shopping (his idea of grocery shopping is buying enough food ingredients for ONE meal), the cleaning (he hasn’t cleaned the bathtub in 2 months, I’ve counted), and rest of boring things like washing the car, taking out trash, and spending some time with the kids. So basically I have no days off.
I cried to myself in my room on Monday night. Here is everything I did on that day from sun up to sun down:
6am: woke up for work 7am: went outside to warm up my car and take all the bags to it (lunch bags, diaper bag, purse) 7:30am: dropped off kids to MIL house/school for the day 8am: stopped by a breakfast joint and got myself food 8:30-5pm: work 5:15pm: arrive home 5:30pm: cook dinneeat/feed kids 6:30-7pm: clean up toys/prepare for bath time 7:15-8:15pm: bath time/dressed for bed (because I have to do 2 toddlers) 8:15-8:45pm: pack their lunches, pack my lunch, pack their clothes for tomorrow. 8:50-9ish: brush toddlers teeth, brush my teeth 9:15-9:30: read bedtime stories to toddlers - husband leaves for work 10:00pm: when toddlers are finally tired enough to fall asleep
My husband’s daily schedule:
7:00am: arrive home from work 7:30-3:00pm: sleep 3:45-4pm: picks up kids (Proceeds to spend an hour at his mom’s house) 5:00pm: arrives home, possibly wash the dishes 5:30-7pm: does nothing but watch tv 7pm-9:20pm: takes a pre-work nap 9:30-9:45pm: leaves for work
Do you guys see the disparity or is it just me?? So because I walk around like a zombie all week long with a slight attitude, husband claims he has no idea why I’ve become the way I am. I’m dead inside. My legs burn at the end of the night. I’m sad for myself. I don’t feel like a wife, I feel like an unpaid maid and nanny. I don’t even get a thank you or just a hug. I’m breaking down slowly inside but I keep going because I have to, I love my kids. I’ve tried bringing ALL this up to the man who lives here but it falls each time on deaf ears. He has no empathy or understanding of my feelings. I’ve given up.
If you’ve gotten this far, I appreciate you for reading. It felt good getting this out.
TLDR: My husband is basically a roommate and I’m over it.

2023.03.22 07:14 ZombieRakunk Estranged dad all alone, eldest daughter advice

To keep this as short as possible, my dad has struggled with alcohol and addiction almost my whole life. Growing up I was a daddy’s girl until about nine when he left my mother. I would later find out that he had gotten into hard drugs and that was why he left. Our house was foreclosed shortly after since my mom was a stay-at-home and had me as a teen so never really worked before. We ended up on welfare, being evicted one place after another because we couldn’t stay afloat. He never paid any child support or helped.
We would visit my dad odd weekends but it was always awkward because he lived with my grandparents and half the time he’d just dump us with them and go out to do god knows what. And if he was around he was restless and antsy, and I always knew why and would spend the weekend trying to distract and keep my little brother from catching on. Eventually these visits stopped altogether in my early teens and he moved about six hours away.
Fast forward through the years, I’d hear from him once in a blue moon. Usually because he was having a moment of clarity or had just gotten out of a detox. But there’d never be any follow-up and he’d disappear for a year or two again.
I was never really angry, just sad. I felt bad for him suffering from addiction and never really blamed him persay. I made excuses that it had been so long it was awkward now to make sustained meaningful contact. Or that if proximity wasn’t an issue maybe I’d see him more.
I’m 36 now and he reinitiated contact about two years ago when his father, my grandfather passed. That was the day that I found out he had been living less than a half hour away for the previous five years. Then I got angry. I didn’t say anything but I decided then that I was finally over it. Clearly this man didn’t care to really have me (or my brother) in his life.
Since I was about fifteen, he had a gf. She was okay. Sober, super AA type which I always found confusing since he’s always been in and out of his addiction and she’s always been clean. She would reach out to me over the years here and there. Wishing me merry Christmas, happy birthday, etc. Nice lady. And my dad loooves her. She’s the only person he has left in the world at this point. All his other bridges have been burned.
And she just died suddenly.
Now he’s allll alone. Has no one. Pushing 60 with a body that’s failing him after years of abuse. My dad is not a bad person. He’s actually a really nice and hilarious guy. Just always troubled and not a very good dad. He’s in emotional turmoil and I feel so bad for him. Since we made contact two years ago we haven’t met up, but he has consistently been texting me since even when I don’t respond. It’s the most sustained contact I’ve had with him since I was a kid. He’s been clean for a few years now.
I’m conflicted. Part of me wants to let bygones be bygones and be there for him in this time of need because I know he has no one else. But the other part is scared to let this man into my life. I just don’t know what to do.
So much for keeping this short. TLDR: absent addict dad’s long time gf has passed away and he is now all alone.
