Van Life Chronicles: Exploring Iceland for Three Weeks

2023.06.07 11:26 Proastandtoast Van Life Chronicles: Exploring Iceland for Three Weeks

This sub has been an incredible source of information and inspiration, so I gave myself an hour to write down and share some insights from the recent three-week road trip I’ve had with my partner.
General remarks:
- Our main goal was to enjoy nature, so we were okay with spending absolutely no time on the golden circle or in Reykjavik. Due to the weather, we ended up doing both anyway; but these would be the parts of the trip I would skip first. Coming from continental Europe, we had almost no jetlag and could safely start directly with our journey. With more jet lag, some more time to adapt is definitely a good idea.
- We rented a 2WD campervan from Star Car Rental and spent all but the final night on campsites. Our experience with Star Car was very good. The price was competitive and included unlimited mileage, additional driver and all necessary utensils (chairs, table, cooking stuff). We got picked up from the airport and were ready to go within 15’. When giving back the car, we got driven to our hotel without any inspection (we did have zero excess insurance).
- Mid-May to beginning of June was a very nice time to travel. The days are long (I’ve seen no darkness), almost all camping places are open, but the crowds at the highlights are small – except for the big boys in the south.
- We started our days quite early and therefore typically arrived during the afternoon at the campsites. The kitchen area, showers and laundry spaces were often free to use. Be prepared to go to campsites that have only 2 stoves and 1 shower. During prime time, expect some waiting times.
- We picked up around 100 € worth of cash – two campsites were cash-only, everything else was absolutely card-first / cash-free.
Useful ressources:
- Vedur and Safetravel: This sub is absolutely right. Learn how to read and anticipate the weather before you get there. We were there during two yellow warnings and these things are really no joke. It helps to have plenty of time to spontaneously adapt the schedule. And we’ve seen it all: blizzard in the West, hail up North, storm in the East and sun in the South.
- Google reviews & park4night: These were pretty accurate for the campsites. 4+ stars are no-brainers, 3+ depend on your needs (kitchen, shower, electricity) and less than 3 should be avoided. Also, remember to rate them yourself during/after your trip to increase the statistical significance ;)
- Google Maps/MyMaps: MyMaps was useful during our planning to fill with random highlights (waterfalls, hotpots, hikes, campsites) and to set up a rough itinerary. Google Maps is accurate on paved roads. On gravel roads, expect some significant delays. Maps calculates with 80 km/h, while you will probably never exceed 50 km/h. In the Westfjords, we guess-timated our times with 2 minutes per kilometer on the gravel roads. The Happy Campers Campsite Map as well as the Hot Pot Iceland Map were nice to have in the back-pocket to check with some time to spare whether something is close by.
- Polarsteps: This was a cute little App, which we used to keep family and friends informed. You can add pictures and some text to your highlights. This way, you don’t send the same picture into various chats and there is a location- and time-dependent context.
Cost: This is the per-person cost breakdown for our 21-day trip (20-day camper rental, 1 hotel stay, total 3’500€).
- Rental (zero excess insurance, additional driver): 1’135 €
- Flight (from continental Europe): 700 €
- Activities (Pools, Spas, Horse-riding, Kayak): 300 €
- Camping (pretty consistent 2’000 +- 500 ISK p.P.): 275 €
- Groceries (Bonus, Kronan, Netto): 255 €
- Coffee, Beers, Food in Restaurants: 260 €
- Petrol (420 € in total for roughly 3’600 km): 210 €
- Souvenirs: 180 €
- Ferries (into Westfjords and to Westman Islands): 95 €
- Hotel: 75 €
Highlights:
- Sundlaug and Spas: When camping in small towns, very often there will be a swimming pool close by. They are not expensive (around 1000 ISK pP) and a great way to relax after a long day. Also, it feels nice to take longer, hot showers without knowing people are waiting in line. We decided to go for some smaller premium spas and were very happy with all of them: Krauma was one of our first stops, the Forest Lagoon was incredible during evening hours and GeoSea was also fantastic. Re: nudity. It takes a bit to get used to, but its very refreshing to see this very open approach to nudity in the pools. No one cares, no one watches – just do your thing. It’s cool to see groups of friends at all age groups be so open about it. Certainly very different compared to continental Europe.
- As we had to skip the Eastfjords a bit due to storm, we had some time left at the end. We spent the last 3 nights on the Westman Islands. It was great to leave the car for a longer while and do everything by foot. There are plenty of things to do and the swimming pool is fantastic.
- Mulagljufur: Use Google Maps to find the exact location, as of now, there is no sign along the road. The canyon is very beautiful and we ended up hiking for almost three hours. Couldn’t get enough of the views.
- Glymur: The infamous log wasn’t placed when we were there, but the short hike to the cave and towards the canyon was absolutely worth it.
- Camping highlights: Melanes campsite at Raudasandur beach (Westfjords): incredible scenery, wild drive to get there; Thingeyri campsite (Westfjords): directly at the fjord, fantastic infrastructure (probably the best kitchen we’ve had) and IMHO a great alternative to the Tungudalur campsite in Isafjordur; 66.12 N campsite (near Husavik): insane ocean view, good infrastructure, one of the best sites along the diamond circle; Glamping&Camping (Westmann Islands): beautiful setting, good infrastructure.
Itinerary (Highlights: *, ** or ***)
Day 1: Arrival at KEF during the afternoon in pouring rain, set up campervan, first grocery stops at Bonus and Kronan, Dinner at Issi’s Fish&Chips*, Camp at Hjalli Kjos
Day 2: Glymur hike** (up to river, no log), Krauma Spa**, scenic drive into Snaefellsnes, Camp at Freezer Hostel
Day 3: Check out Snaefellsnes highlights, get to Stykkisholmur in the afternoon, Ferry Baldur to Brjanslaekur, Hellulaug hotpot*, drive to Melanes campsite*** on Raudasandur beach
Day 4: full day at Raudasandur, great hikes, another night at Melanes campsite.
Day 5: Long drive through westfjords. Highlights included the self-service fish station in Talknafjordur (amazing fisk bollur**), Dynjandi waterfall and Sandfell hike. Camping at Thingeyri*, relax in local swimming pool
Day 6: drive to Isafjordur, check out city (kind of underwhelming, but it was a national holiday; the brewery is nice), do some small hikes in the area. Camp at Tungudalur.
Day 7: very long drive out of westfjords towards Varmahlid. Hot dog stop in Holmavik and arrive at Lambeyri campsite (cash only)
Day 8: woke up with dead battery, but got jump start by campsite owner. Horseriding tour at Lytingsstadir* was very nice, drive to Akureyri, visit Forest Lagoon**. It was Saturday night when we visited, upon leaving we had police checking every driver for alcohol – so better hold off the pool-side bar ;) wanted to camp at Vaglaskogur but campsite wasn’t open. Went up until the CJA campsite in Laugar with a late-night stop at Godafoss (around 10pm, were the only people there)
Day 9: check out Myvatn area: Dimmuborgir hike, Hverir, Leirhnjukur hike**. Then continue to Dettifoss and camp at Asbyrgi. Late night hike to Asbyrgi ‘island’*.
Day 10: Hike in Asbyrgi canyon, continue to Husavik, visit GeoSea**, camp at 66.12N***
Day 11: long drive with very strong winds. We had to go back to Akureyri (optician to fix broken glasses), so went through Myvatn again with a quick stop at Grjotagja. Beautiful drive, weather was too bad for Studlagil canyon, so we continued all the way to Borgarfjordur eystri. Crazy winds during the night and we were happy that our car didn’t get blown away.
Day 12: unfortunately, no hikes in this beautiful area. Waited for storm to pass until lunchtime, visited harbor with puffins**, drive to Egilsstadir (hot dog stop), continue to Seydisfjordur (kind of underwhelming town, the drive is gorgeous though) and, due to weather forecast, continue all the way to Djupivogur campsite.
Day 13: Incredible drive from Djupivogur to Höfn, stops at Hvalnes and Jökulsarlon. Hike at Mulagljufur***, camp at Svenifell.
Day 14: early-morning hike in Skaftafell**, continue to Kirjubaersklausur for campsite. Had to skip Fjardrargljufur due to weather, visited local swimming pool.
Day 15: yellow warning again. Continued to Vik for Skool Beans Coffee*, quick stop at Reynisfjara beach (red alert was on, so we didn’t go further than the sign), continue to Skogarfoss and hike part of Fimmvorduhals*, camp in Selfoss – swimming pool was closed unfortunately.
Day 16: Weather forecast was very bad, so we spent the day in Reykjavik. Walked around town, grabbed some coffees and visiting the local Sundhöll*. Camp at Mosskogar** (cash-only)
Day 17: Golden circle: hike at Thingvellir, look at Geysir, skipped Delfoss. Camp in Selfoss again.
Day 18: quick stop at Seljalandsfoss, ferry to Westman islands. Set up camp at Glamping&Camping** for the next 3 nights. Visited Brothers Brewery*.
Day 19: Kayak tour with Kayak-and-Puffins-company***. Visited local swimming pool* (trampoline slide was very nice) and watched a local handball game.
Day 20: Hike along volcanoes and coast**, visit brewery again, go to puffin bay**
Day 21: Ferry back to mainland. Drive back towards KEF. Drop-off campervan and spent night in Konvin Hotel. Early morning shuttle to airport (we arrived about 2h early for our 7 am flight and had plenty of time).
Of course, I’m very happy to answer any questions you might have!
Hope this is helpful to some of you :)

So, so far I've gotten to +13 all stats without the fairy bath. Is it actually possible to hit +15 with just SIT, Ocean City and the lake without any shadow taint?

( English / Polish / Arabic / Greek Dubbing )
Plot summary : ** 1 - A grandfather mouse tells his grandchildren the "real" story of the Titanic disaster, including himself, evil sharks, a giant octopus, and an evil whaling scheme.
** 2 - Inside a bathysphere, Don Juan and Elizabeth, as well as their dog Smile and the mice Top Connors and Ronnie, have begun exploring the ocean depths in search of the sunken wreck of the Titanic. However, a shark named Ice Teeth cuts the cable of the bathysphere and sinks it. The occupants awake and find themselves in the lost city of Atlantis. The expedition members undergo a special treatment enabling them to breathe underwater. Meanwhile, Ronnie and Top Connors are approached by other mice and attend a secret meeting where they learn about a plot to steal the elixir of life. Ronnie and Top Connors alert Don Juan and Smile to the plot. The king of Atlantis decides to substitute the elixir with ordinary water. The mice steal the elixir and present it to their leader. This, however, almost kills him by drowning, as it convinces him to jump head-first into the sewers tied to heavy stones. As a reward, the king of Atlantis assists in the Titanic's recovery, enlisting the help of Tentacles, the giant, friendly octopus. The king then transports the Titanic to the bay of a secret island.

2023.06.07 10:14 Platonic_Republic I Need Help Getting Desoxyn

Many of you know me by my affiliation with ObscureDrugs as a Mod. I have been a champion of Desoxyn for the past 3-4 years that I have been on Reddit. I have been prescribed Desoxyn for the past 13 years and that ended in November of 2022 when the shortages started.
I have tried to get my CVS to order Desoxyn here in Alabama and even when faced with a 1500.00 bill (because BCBSofAL does not contract with CVS only Walgreens and WALMART), I offered to pay cash for Desoxyn but CVS said they couldnt get it. Walgreens says their suppliers dont have Desoxyn and same with WalMart.. I have 3 RXs for Desoxyn sitting at 3 different pharmacies here and not one says they can get it. I tried using the Desoxyn Key Pharmaceuticals coupon to no avail! HELP! PLEASE!

2023.06.07 09:40 groundzer0s Wheelchair-friendly beach areas?

My dad was once a beach bum, playing guitar by a bonfire after a good motorcycle ride. He married my mom on Gleneden beach and asked me to scatter his ashes there when he dies. He really, really loves the coast.
But he's 68 now and is missing a leg. He is fresh out of an abusive marriage that kept him home-bound for nearly a decade, and for a solid 5 years of that, I kept my distance because of his wife. Now it's like I have my dad back, and I can finally start doing things with him again. There's a whole list of stuff I wanna take him out to do, like go see the Southern Pacific Daylight at the museum in Portland or go fishing just one more time at Minto Brown Island Park where I caught my first fish when I was around 6 or so. But a big thing I wanna do is take my dad out to the beach, not just to go thrifting or to stop at Depoe Bay, but actually to a spot where we can enjoy watching the waves wash over the sand. My dad has pretty bad health, so I'm never really sure just how much time I have left with him, so I wanna make it happen while I've got a chance. I don't think I could ever forgive myself if I didn't give him the opportunity to see the coast that he desperately misses. I doubt there's anywhere on sand that we can go because of his wheelchair, but anything close will be a good recommendation. Moe's over in Lincoln City is on my list of places to stop for food that also has a good view of the ocean from a flat, sturdy surface.

2023.06.07 08:46 Homelander88 Climate Change & Environment must be a disaster in DC Earth.

- Scarecrow releases toxins into Gotham's waterway's to spread his fear across gotham. Batman cleverly finds old, unused pipes to redirect the water away from households and into the ocean. Disaster averted.
2 Weeks later Joker releases his laughing gas across gotham for the 8th time this year.
4 days later Darkseid invades earth. Parademons attack humans across the globe everywhere. 10 oil tankers waiting at the suez canal get torn up as parademons tear through the hull to reach the sailors. Oil spill 18x larger than the largest in history occurs. 2 towns over a train carrying highly toxic chemicals is derailed by parademons standing on the tracks. Heavy fire from the military trying to protect civillians sets the chemicals on fire which begin to burn.
A terrorist organization steals a not-bomb made by lexcorp and with a few tweaks turn it into a holy shit scale bomb. At the last second superman grabs it and throws it with his strength. Bomb lands in the indian ocean and the oxplosion can be easily observed 2 planets away. Batman remarks the explosion is equal to 5 nuclear bombs.
1 year later doomsday shows up and the JL fight him for 8 long hours before superman finally puts him down. Preferring to keep the fight away from civillians the JL fight Doomsday out in the city outskirts in the industrial sector. Lots of chemicals, fuels, toxic substances, bio organisms and such escape their sensitive containers and either burn or spill into nearby land and water streams.
Some terrorist organization somehwere is always finding lost / stolen nuclear weapons or building their own. Due to suspense the bombs are never stopped b4 completion and heroes always arrive just as they have been armed. "your too late". Hero takes the nuke into the ocean, abondoned island, arctic or so forth.
------------------
The carbon levels and the pollution on DC earth must be next level. Climate change their must be crazy. It makes sense why superman is always responding to some tsunami + flooding somewhere in africa / asia and how flash is dealing with category 5 hurricanes every other weak.

2023.06.07 06:19 VajraShoyru Who should I contact about a plethora of problems I've been having in training?

A few months ago, I made a post on this subreddit asking about unrelated things regarding how I could get hired since my current job at that point in time was more toxic than I could handle. I finally got hired about a month and a half ago, and I still have many questions and one BIG concern.
As the title states, there are many problems I've had since we started, but let's start at the beginning - I am a young man with autism who is on Social Security Disability Income, or SSDI; I can only work around 20-25 hours per week in order to keep my benefits. During my search for a new job, I was reaching out to other stores desperately trying to get hired on as a pharmacy tech in-training. I finally found that the store manager of what is now my home store could see that I had the qualifications and she said "well how about I just send you a job offer right now?" I was overjoyed, having been witness to daily acts of violence from a few coworkers at my now-previous job, and as soon as I got the offer, I put my two-weeks notice in at that place.
Non-orientation shift one, I trained on the soundless computer (had some trouble understanding some modules without sound, though) with my scrubs going MIA, and ended up being there 4 hours total. I headed back to the same store on shift two, still with no scrubs, and was told "you need to do this at a training store". I was placed in contact with a scheduler person working from a store in a town an hour away from me, and as kind and patient as he is with me, therein lies my first gripe: he is annoyingly hard to get ahold of. It is like pulling teeth dealing with trying to learn my weekly schedule in advance, and even then I've not worked much since I got hired (but that's getting ahead of myself).
Shift two for real arrives, I do just fine, but when I come in for shift three, the training store's manager approaches me and asks "where are your scrubs? You can't work dressed like that" (I was wearing a nice shirt and a pair of nicer shorts). She was super-confused as to why I didn't have them...because I honestly DIDN'T have them. I contacted the home store where I had ordered them to be taken to, but they didn't have them either so I was sent home. A day or so later, though, I got my scrubs picked up finally and washed them, wore them for shift three, and it also went fine.
Things start to really unravel for me when I get to shift 4's training guide (which was really day-of-work 5, since it took me two separate days to finish the shift 3 guide, but whatever, refer to this one as 4), however. I get told upon starting that guide's recommended modules that I'll need sound to finish the entire set of modules...remember when I said that the home store didn't have sound on their training machines? Yeah, neither does the training store. I get told to just shadow again, which goes fine for a bit before I go back to try a no-sound-required module. It tells me to shadow on phone calls.
"Well, we don't get a lot of calls, so just skip that one and don't do it..." the pharmacist on duty told me. This raised a red flag to me immediately - I can imagine in my line of work now I will be receiving and taking many calls. How am I meant to learn it without...y'know...learning it? The rest of the shift goes pretty awkwardly, too, with a rise in orders that either use expired drugs, or are somehow different than a run of the mill prescription.
Then payday comes, and with it, the most devastating news regarding a new job I've taken that I think I've ever experienced.
I was not paid for training shifts 2 through 5 whatsoever. I was given a few reasons why, but I don't think any of them add up for any reason other than incompetence. You see, I was told quite a few times that "while you're at the training store, do not run the drive through, do not clock in and out using their computer since you're not an employee at that store, but please do turn in your paper pay slip before your next payday". I had followed that advice to the letter, but I was only paid for the first shift I had done at the home store - the four-hour one with no scrubs worn, no training store involved - with absolutely zero of the training store shifts counted. I called the pharmacy manager at my home store - he didn't really apologize as much as make excuses ("you brought your pay slips in after the pay period cutoff date!" which was NOT true, nor what I was told to do initially) and a half-assed attempt at saying "I'll put it in for an off-schedule payment but it won't be until Wednesday or Thursday that you'll get it". I called HR and they weren't super helpful either, suggesting that the reason was ONLY because I had not clocked in or out using the time clock on the computers up-front. To top it all off, I spoke with my scheduler guy (the dude who's really hard to contact) and while he did apologize for the confusion about it all, he also insultingly scheduled me only one day this week (tomorrow as of this post, which has even more insult to injury as that's actually my IRL birthday, meaning I had to cancel some plans)...and that's it.
I have had some pretty wild conversations with my father about getting a new job squared away with training, but needless to say, neither of us are impressed with how CVS has handled any of this. He was absolutely floored when I told him "hey Dad, I got a work schedule for this week, ten AM to three PM tomorrow, and that's all I got!" Everyone's answer as to why I was not paid properly for my current training seems to be different, and I'm kind of at a loss. On top of that, I do not feel like a single day out of a five-day work week would be enough to teach me much of anything and have it stick wtih me, especially when the machines have no sound when sound is required to hear what the modules are saying!
I've already put in a ticket on myHR. I'm not sure what to do until then...I do love the people at my training store; they're kind and teach me well, but they don't have any hours to take me in, and I really would rather not return to my assigned home store at this point. My home store is also 20 minutes away from me, compared to under 5 for another store in my area that I could probably get hired at, (but that's another story entirely); it made sense at the time to just take the job no matter how far away it was, but to try and confront the pharmacy manager about this again if it doesn't get resolved is kind of wasting gas in my car, not to mention the kind manager that hired me in the first place left the company around my fourth day of work. I honestly feel like they're going to miss the second and third days I worked on this rectification, since I had to call my home store's pharmacy manager and verbally tell him when I worked for those shifts, and that was before all the "I didn't get paid" stuff happened!
What should I do? I'm kind of shocked that this happened at all...

EDIT for a tl;dr - I was given a bunch of conflicting directions for the very few shifts I've worked since being hired recently, and it resulted in me not being paid for four shifts.

2023.06.07 05:47 Screaming_Mosquito Does anyone want this thing growing in my backyard? Please say yes.

I've tried selling this thing for weeks now on Facebook Marketplace, eventually at just 1 cent because I just genuinely want it out of my hair. And I cannot find any takers. I want someone to just take it instead of throwing it out because honestly, I'm deeply nervous about what would happen if I did. But if this advertisement proves to be just as fruitless, I will do it despite my nervousness because my mind just can't take this anymore otherwise I'm afraid I'm going to have a psychological break with reality and need to be sedated.
I grew up originally in Northern California near Mt. Shasta, and four years ago I moved to the Big Island of Hawaii after I got a new job working for the university located in Hilo as an adjunct. The search for a place to rent where I could garden in the backyard took a while, but the wait was worth it. Gardening is like comfort food for my soul, and always has been ever since I was a little girl. My mom brought me up doing it, and I took to it immediately when I was just 3 or 4 she always liked to remind me.
I suppose the reason I wanted to leave California was the fact that she wasn't there anymore, that the last piece or vestige of my family was gone and I was all that was left of the life we used to have out there. I remember the day everything was packed up for the movers and ready to go, I walked outside to wait for a friend to pick me up to take me to the airport. As I sat there on my porch, I saw an elderly man walking in front of my front yard. It was an old friend of my mom's from the neighborhood. He had been very kind to me at her funeral as he had just lost his wife himself. We both waved at each other and I got up to chat with him one last time.
As it turned out, he was there to give me a going away present. It was a batch of strange seeds in a small sack. Some were colored burgundy, others indigo, and still others ivory with fascinating patterns on them. In total, there were 19 by my count. He said that before his wife passed away, she had originally intended to give them to my mom. Apparently, during one of their hiking trips around the mountain, the two of them kept stopping to see if someone was following them. Every time they would, some tree would rustle or a bush would make a quick, sharp noise indicating some sort of disturbance. Towards the end of their hike, they stopped one final time only for them to turn around and notice that someone had left this dingy little sack of seeds on a rotted out tree stump they had just passed. In other words, there was no question at that point that they had been followed.
For what reason? He couldn't say, though obviously the implication was that whoever it was wanted them to have these seeds. His wife died soon after that, before she could pass them along to my mother. He said he was hesitant to part with them after she died, but felt extremely guilty having waited too long to give them to my mom. Now that I was heading to Hawaii, he thought he ought to just give them to me instead of continuing to keep them. Other than that, he told me to be very careful with them, to specifically pour them out into the ground from the sack instead of touching them myself. And I wondered why. Like it's such an oddly specific thing to bring up about them.
Regardless.
I took them gratefully and thanked him for the gift and said that my mother would have loved them. Now, I'm not so sure she would have.
It was only a week or so after I had finally unpacked everything in my new place that I decided to garden again. And the first thing I planted, of course, were the seeds once meant for my mom. In memory of her. It was only one I put in the ground because honestly I wasn’t exactly sure how big this thing was going to grow to be. I wasn’t even sure what exactly this thing was even going to grow to be either. Turns out, it’s a vegetable… of some kind. I think. It’s almost like a yam? Like with the same texture and everything but with bright orange skin… and fur in strange places? Also, another thing, it’s like a yam but at the time of writing this it has most definitely grown beyond the size of a typical yam. Basically it’ll increase in size every week or so by a half a foot by my measure. Also, every time it grows by that much, another bulbous root pops out and burrows itself beneath.
And oh yeah there are little blue flowers (or what I guess you could call flowers) growing out of little nooks and crannies and just random spots all over. I’m not sure what to say. I have yet to identify it. If one of you reading this can, then good for you, would you like to take it off my hands in that case? Please? Okay well, I guess I better finally explain why I want this damn thing out of here. I’ve already ostracized myself at work trying to get people to take it, as well as trying to explain what makes me hate the thing, so what harm will come from making a bunch of internet strangers think I’m creepy or crazy?
The black and white of it is that every time this thing grows a half a foot, every time another root plants itself in the ground, every time another one of those little blue flower buds appears on it, something changes. About the world we live in. About our history. About how we live day to day. And no one seems to notice any of the changes except for me. Today in fact, I almost got into a fatal car crash after I woke up and took note of a new flower bud growing on the side of it facing my house. If you put a Bible in front of me and made me swear to God that I was going to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth I would swear on that, my life, and my late mother’s grave that I grew up knowing that Americans in all 50 states drive on the left side of the road.
I know you’re probably laughing at me. Because that’s what the person I almost ran into did when I told them. They wanted to know if I was British or something, and I said no I was born and raised in Northern California all my life. The closest I’ve ever even been to a foreign country is San Diego. But when I pulled over after that scare and looked it up on my phone, there it was. Americans drive on the right side of the road and pretty much always have. It’s just so… jarring. I have vivid memories of me death gripping the wheel to my mom’s Wrangler for the first time in my life, with her in the passenger seat teaching me the rules of the road for the first time. And I remember very clearly her telling me that no matter where I go in the United States or Canada, if I ever did that is, I would be on the left side of the road the entire time.
And I remember everyone else driving on the left side too. I remember them doing it yesterday. And now, everyone’s acting like it’s actually been this other way the entire time and that I’m somehow just noticing it. But I’m not “just noticing” it. It changed without warning me, to my abject frustration. This is what my life has been like since I planted it. I remember when it first sprouted. When I first started noticing the changes. The very first one I encountered were the changes made to the American flag. Again, swearing to God, on my own life, and on my late mother’s grave, I can attest that the American flag has always had 13, red and white, diagonal stripes. Not horizontal. Diagonal.
Again, I remember vividly sitting Indian style around our 1st grade teacher as she taught us some of the most basic history of the Revolutionary War. Particularly when it came to the Betsy Ross story. I remember being told that, when Betsy Ross first showed George Washington her initial design for the flag that it did indeed have horizontal stripes just like the one I suppose all of you are familiar with. But at the last second, he had her change them to be diagonal because he wanted to convey that the United States did not intend to be an empire in which some states would be perceived to be dominating the others by being “on top”. Making the stripes diagonal, to him, avoided this undesired symbolism.
I remember it all so clearly, even the little kitschy cartoon drawings in our school books of him with Betsy Ross as she showed him the final design. I remember reading about it in middle and high school. Hell, I even remember writing a 13 page essay for US History I in college that dealt with the subject. The paper of course, along with any historical record or proof of this detailed memory (digital or otherwise), is nowhere I can find it. It’s as if God or something turned the whole world into one big Wikipedia article and began editing reality at random with no one reverting the changes.
If you don’t think I’m crazy yet, then maybe I’m just not trying hard enough. When I noticed the plant had grown its eighth root, I learned for the first time in my life that Richard Nixon resigned over the Watergate scandal and not for having been outed as having had a nearly decade long affair with both Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy at the same time as I thought I had been taught. I hadn’t even heard the term Watergate before that. In fact, I learned at the same exact time that apparently for decades since, the affix -gate had been attached to various other scandals and controversies as though it were a naming convention. Until that eighth root planted itself firmly in the ground, I had never once seen or heard of something like that before.
The day I noticed the very first flower to bloom on it, was the same day I found out there’s this little place near Long Island and New Jersey you may have heard of called New York City. You see, to me, that place has always been (and always will be in my mind as I cling onto what I know to be the truth) New Ithaca. Frank Sinatra’s famous song that is played every year on New Year’s Eve, has always been about the great city of New Ithaca, the Big Apple. The changes are just so weird and particular too. The whole general history of that city and state has remains the same though (at least to me), being that it was founded by the Dutch but was taken by the British and renamed before becoming a part of the United States. Only, instead the place was previously named New North Brabant whereas I suppose you have always known that New York used to be New Amsterdam.
There’s even a song about that bit of trivia, I learned. Catchy, and also cringe inducing for someone like me going through what I’m going through.
Actually the overwhelming bulk of changes have had to do with place names. Again growing up, I had it beaten into my brain that in 1492 Columbus sailed the Pacific blue. You heard that right. The vast puddle you probably call the Atlantic Ocean has always been the Pacific to me. And vice versa. Nebraska was a name I had not ever heard of before I measured another half foot in that damn thing’s already enormous length. To me that place was called the State of Fillmore. If before I measured it to be at 3 feet, you had asked me to point out Paris on a map, I would have stared at you blankly until I realized you probably meant to say Degaulleville which was built just northeast of the ruins of the ill-fated City of Lights after it was used as a testing ground for Germany’s most devastating weapon of WWII - the nuclear bomb.
Apparently in this new world the plant has created for me, it is our country that has the dubious honor of being the first military in the world to use nuclear weapons in an actual war.
And the list of changes I have just goes on and on like that. I’m not going to waste time spelling them all out for you. I’m sure that should be enough for you to at least hear me out or dismiss me as having had a break with reality. All I want now is this thing in my backyard, and these seeds to boot, out of here. Like I said in the beginning, I’d throw it away, but now that I suspect there’s some sort of link between it and all these changes being made, I worry what it could do to me if I yanked it out of the ground and chucked it into a dumpster. Degaulleville, Fillmore, etc. were erased by this thing. I could be too, if I made it mad enough.
There’s another part of me, a selfish part, that hopes if someone else takes it they can be the ones to have all these changes happen to instead. They can be the ones to watch desperately as what you once knew to be true, to be there, to be real, is all ground up and thrown away like it was nothing to bend your reality and leave you as the only one aware of it. I want that to happen to someone else instead of me. I want to be the one who’s oblivious to the changes made in the fabric and window dressings of reality. I want to be the one who reads the complaints and desperate cries of someone like me, and calls them crazy. I want want want that.
There’s another, tinier part of me, that naively hopes once I can leave this thing with someone else, it will change reality again but this time for the better. For the better, for me. Maybe once it starts affecting someone else adversely, it can change reality one more time to make my mom come back. To come back in a way that would make me forget she was ever gone. And then maybe I can go home, go back to the life I was used to living. But I know at the same time, there’s absolutely no reason it would do something nice like that for me.
Hell, if anything, it could decide to make things in reality, history, etc. worse for everyone including me. Like let me think… Okay for example, remember back in 1999 when everyone was afraid of the Y2K bug, but then it turned out to not be such a catastrophic ordeal as people were predicting? That damn plant could change things to make it so that Y2K’s catastrophic potential was fulfilled. Or wait, here’s a more recent example - remember like three or so years ago when there was that weird disease in China all the schools and governments got freaked out about for two weeks, warning about having to do lockdowns and stuff like that only for the Chinese government to successfully contain it before it could leave its shores?
I’d imagine the plant could change that history as well. And it’s not like I want any of that to happen, it’s just that I have little to no control over whether or not it will. And I just want to be free from being the only one to know it’s all happening. To notice it everyday. To have your heart and brain scratched at and tortured by it when you do.
So please, someone, anyone out there who can and is willing to take this thing off my hands knowing full well what it is - just DM me. I’ll give it to you at no charge or expense to you. I’ll even dig it out of the ground and drive to where you are (if you’re on the island that is) so you don’t have to get up and go anywhere. If you’re located somewhere else I’ll happily volunteer to pay all the associated shipping costs at my own expense as well in order to get it to you.
You’ll be my knight in shining armor if you do.
UPDATE: I am no longer in need of anyone to take this thing and these seeds off my hands. Thank you to the person that DMed me after I posted this. I got your email confirming that it safely arrived at your address as well. Also, glad to hear it’s grown another root. By glad, I mean that I am glad to know that it has grown yet again but this time I haven’t noticed anything changing. You have no idea what you’ve done to help salvage my sanity. Bless you.

Bless you.

2023.06.07 03:48 Terrible-Upstairs982 Cvs pharmacy tech

A CVS Pharmacy tech scolded me for picking up my prescription (paxlovid). She proceeded to ask me if the prescription was for me and why I didn’t have someone else pick it up… I didn’t argue with her but I called CVS Customer service and complained. I was told they would call me back but never got a call. I didn’t have anyone else to help me pick it up but why was she such a asshole about it?!

2023.06.07 03:13 Bundyboyz Clarification on loan to buyer

Just wanted to ensure this was correct. In MD you can loan a stripped receiver to someone as long as not prohibited possessor.
Example my buddy in Montgomery is purchasing from someone in Ocean City. So he’s driving meeting guy at barracks doing paperwork. At that point the (seller) is going to allow him to borrow the stripped receiver for inspection purposes. After the wait period clears seller will send his email giving the date the item officially was owned by my buddy, which would be after the 7 day wait. This is legal as the stripped receiver is being loaned so he can make all his measurements.
-I can’t explain these guys building clone rifles but a great level of detail goes into it apparently.
Good to go correct? Again this is just a stripped receiver. I’ve heard of many people loaning handguns and rifles just wanted to double check.
Thanks.
