***Thanks for the supportive comments and upvotes! I'm really happy some people enjoyed the first story! I have a lot of fun writing short narratives like the ones found in the codex! So anyway here's the second part of my homebrew warband's story, "Maelstrom's Fall"***
Where once there was cacophonous pain in Garius’s mind, now there was only silence. Peace. Purity.
The wailing of the Butcher Nails faded away as the chorus of wailing from the Imperial command personnel around him began to rise. Garius and nine of his brothers had appeared from nowhere. A lightning strike teleportation into the subterranean command center of the Aeronautica Imperialis airbase known as "Maelstrom". A fitting name for the base as it became a maelstrom of violence and slaughter.
A blue uniformed officer fired a plasma pistol into Garius' face and then froze in horror at what he saw beneath the mask. A polished skull grinned back at him. The flesh of Garius's face had long ago peeled away, though he still felt the touch of wind and pain and heat from the plasma. His eyes had long ago turned to ash, yet he still saw in multiple spectrums, having been blessed with daemonsight. He had not even a nose, yet could catch scents as if he were one of the Blood Gods own hounds. And now his empty sockets bore down into the squirming officer’s eyes as Garius shoved the blade of his chainfist into the officer's chest and roared his unholy weapon to life. The officer erupted into a fountain of gore as Garius released the now dead man and allowed him to slide down the roaring chainblade, bisecting the officer as the corpse was sawn open from the chest up through the shoulder. The bloody slopped to the ground, spilling guts and ichor at Garius’s feet.
All around Garius similar scenes played out as his crimson clad brethren performed the same ritual. As slaughter ritual completed the command center fell silent but for the whirring of command cogitators, the humming of the crimson clad warrior's tactical Dreadnought armor, and the steady dripping of blood that had covered the ceilings and consoles. With the silence, however, came the screaming of the Butcher Nails within the minds of the Ten.
Garius, being the unit’s Champion of Khorne and the eldest of his brothers, had begun the chanting that always followed their bloody ritual.
It was quiet at first. "Blood."
But steadily grew in volume. "Skulls."
Until the crimson warrior's vox amplifiers were maxed. "Slaughter!"
It was the ritual war cry of the Slaughter Lords.
Once the Slaughter Lords were once faithful servants of the God Emperor until revealed to be of hereticus genestock. Known as the Sanguine Lords, they were branded Heretic Extremis by the Imperium they had served faithfully for millennia, and subject to a devastating war that saw their domains burned and sacked and their ranks decimated. Following the Sanguine War, the remnants of the Sanguine Lords Chapter disappeared into the Great Rift where they fully accepted their heritage as World Eaters and rechristened themselves the Slaughter Lords Warband. Their quest for slaughter and vengeance had brought them here, to the surface of Dharrovar, and the municipality of Grey Falls. And here they would pile the skulls of their victims high, and truly bring the blessings of Khorne unto themselves.
Garius Sentris and his nine brothers split up, moving with unnatural speed and unbridled fury through the halls and defenses of the lower levels of the Air Base. One brother stayed behind to reconfigure the command center comms array to block incoming and outgoing communications for the entire municipal sector. No warning would be sent to the other strong points within Grey Falls, only for the warcry of the Slaughter Lords.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!" The words repeated on loop to every Imperial vox receiver in a 30 kilometer radius, utilizing the command center’s vox overrides to block all other Imperial vox communications from getting through.
One pair of brothers took control of the missile batteries, lest they be used to deprive the Slaughter Lords of their blessed butchery. Another pair of brothers disabled the self-destruct cogitators that had begun to countdown as the command center fell.The other five crimson clad brothers, led by Garius Sentris, slaughtered their way to the surface entry point.
Taking a pause before opening the exterior blast doors, Garius Sentris had words for his brothers. "The dogs of the corpse Emperor betrayed us. They burned our worlds. Massacred our brothers and our peoples. Now we will do the same to them, as we have done a hundred times before! We will take from them everything! And give to them nothing except death! For the fallen! For Khorne! FOR SKALAK! BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
The blast door opened. A half crescent formation of the crimson terminator brothers of the Slaughter Lords marched out in unison. A booming cacophony of fire erupted from their storm bolters. Heavy weapon emplacements and entire squads of white-helmeted guardsmen erupt into mists of gore, metal, and fire.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
For a few brief moments the defenders were stunned. They had prepared for an attack from the east, from outside the perimeter. They did not expect the enemy to appear from within the very place they sought to defend. “BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!”
A rocket narrowly missed Garius' head. The guardsman who fired the projectile exploded into pieces a split second later as a mass reactive shell detonated against his flak vest.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
A Heavy Bolter squad swung their weapon round, and managed to squeeze off two rounds and strike brother Ventrilius in the chest. Ventrilius was splayed open, his armor and body alike rent wide. He was dead before he hit the ground. Vengeance was immediate, as brother Quintus unleashed a roar and charged at the position, storm bolter firing the whole way.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
The Heavy Bolter and one of its operators burst apart as they were struck by shells, and two more operators were decapitated in a sweeping blow from Ventrilius' sword. Half a dozen nearby guardsmen suffered the same fate only seconds later.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
Garius' and his other remaining brothers broke into a sprinting charge. The Butcher's Nails screaming in their minds. Demanding blood. Demanding slaughter.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
Garius broke through a two meter stack of sand bags, knocking two guardsmen down and surprising eight more. Garius stomped over the two fallen guardsmen and their guts erupted from their mouths as his armored sabatons sank into their bodies with a satisfying squelch.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!" With a burst from his storm bolter Garius blew four men to his left into chunks of ground meat. With a crossing swipe to the right another three fell, the energy field of his chainfist transforming them into smears of gore upon the ground. With a forward kick the Sergeant was flung ten meters, tumbling and spinning on the ground and bleed profusely from the mouth. His organs had exploded from the force. He was dead in seconds.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
Still charging, Garius spotted a Commissar with a chest full of medals and ribbons. The blonde haired man was busy executing the fleeing and cowering white-helmets and didn’t even realize he was about to die. Just as Garius was about to sate his Butcher's Nails with the blood of the small black-uniformed man, he was thrown off his charge at the last split second. As he stumbled one way he was dazed by a strike and thrown another way.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
Garius stood and found himself facing a trio of Ogryn, as large as him, wielding massive shields and maces crackling with power. Garius tried to sneer. There was no flesh on his face to contort into feelings he wished to express. Garius roared as he fired his storm bolter at the middle Ogryn and advanced forward.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
With it’s shield planted in the ground, the brute absorbed the fire as the other pair of Ogryns advanced on either side of Garius to flank him. An overhead blow came from the left.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!" the pace of his chanting quickened.
Garius let his storm bolter drop to the ground as he raised his gauntleted hand and caught the Ogryn at the wrist. Garius yanked hard, and the howling Ogryn was thrown behind him, its arm being ripped off in the process.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
At the same time the second Ogryn threw a sweeping blow from the right towards Garius' head. Garius caught the mace mid-swing with his chainfist’s power gauntlet, crushing the end of the weapon.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
With his left arm Garius threw the first Ogryns arm at the Commissar, knocking the man to the ground just as he brandished his power sword in a feeble effort to aid his Ogryn bodyguards.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
After destroying the second Ogryns weapon with his right gauntlet, Garius dug his right elbow down into the Ogryn’s shield, leveraging it aside as the revving chainblade beneath his powerfist cut into the Ogryn. As the blade found flesh Garius released his grip from the Ogryn’s weapon and forced his chainfist through the Ogryn. The beast screamed for a moment as its right arm was severed, then went quiet as its chest and other arm was sawn through and its other arm fell to the ground as well. The Ogryn collapsed into a dismembered mess of gore.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
Before the second Ogryn fell the Third Ogryn had begun charging, howling in rage and shouldering its shield. Garius braced himself, left gauntleted hand forward.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
The Ogryn's charge was stopped cold in its tracks and, holding the shield in place with his left gauntlet, Garius rammed his chainfist against the Ogryn's slab shield. At the same time Garius pulled the shield, and the Ogryn that was attached to it, toward him as hard as he could. For a split second the blade simply growled and sparked against the shield. Then suddenly burst through, the force of the blade penetration and the power fist's energy field blowing the shield and Ogryn apart. Fragments of metals and chunks of meat exploded away from Garius as the Ogryn's ruined body was launched head over heels from the force of Garius' strike. It was almost comical.
"BLOOD! SKULLS! SLAUGHTER!"
Picking up his storm bolter Garius fired two bolts into the Ogryn amputee behind him without looking back. Its head and shoulders burst into bits.
"Blood. Skulls. Slaughter." The chant slowed. The Butcher's Nails were quiet. There was peace to be found in the purity of Slaughter.
The three Ogryns had been dispatched in seconds. Meanwhile the Commissar was just beginning to get up. The Commisar swung his power sword up in a wild one handed arc and stumbled as his blade found nothing but air. The Commissar was only a human. He was catatonically slow by comparison to the gene wrought and warp empowered speed of Garius, who casually leaned back out of range of the strike. With a flick of one finger of his powerfist the Commissar's personal shield was defeated and his pretty awards and medals exploded out of his back with the rest of his chest.
"Blood. Skulls. Slaughter." It was a whisper now.
In the 60 seconds since erupting from the subterranean levels of Maelstrom Air Base, hundreds of Astra Militarum and Navy Imperialis forces had been slain by Garius and his brothers. Though the Imperial defenders had scrambled their aircraft and readied their defenses as best they could, nothing could prepare them for the surprise of Garius’s rear assault. In the mean time hundreds of Slaughter Lord's had burst up from the subterranean caverns of Dharrovar less than a kilometer from the Air Base Perimeter. They had fallen upon the defenders right as Garius and his brothers had come up from the depths. They streamed past him now, the Berserkers and their followers, the Jakhals. They were gore drenched and screaming maniacally as they scoured the base for survivors' butcher and skulls to collect.
The Imperial defenders had been all but slaughtered. Maelstrom Air Base had fallen. But soon the remaining defenders of Grey Falls would be mobilized. Garius knew the battle was only just beginning. Garius also knew that no matter how many lives he ended, the screaming of Butcher’s Nails in his mind would always return. Despite that, for a few fleeting moments at least, Garius had known silence. Peace. Purity.

Teresh's ship entered the Sol system at long last.
Having taken a good two cycles of FTL (faster-than-light) travel to reach. Looking at his diagnostics, he began to perform a LRS (long range scan) of the surrounding planets. Surprisingly, planet No. 626 proved to be the only one with a stable atmosphere. It was perfectly understandable to someone like Teresh. The kooli's own planet was well suited to their needs and they had a difficult time surviving on gas giants or planets with an acidic atmosphere. He went to brush a few stray feather's out of his face, he had to be presentable for the new additions to the Valaxi Empire. It still amazed him, that out of all the child species under the Valaxi, that they had chosen his to make the first contact with the inhabitants of planet No. 626. It was a dream come true for himself and would reflect well on his family's name.
As he began to speed closer to the blue and green sphere, he was curious as to the level of technology the aliens possessed. From what data the Valaxi had collected from afar, it seemed they were around a level 3 class civilization. Having succeeded in attaining space travel, but not FTL travel as far as they were aware. His talons gripped the ship's steering handles tightly. There would be no mistakes on this venture, Teresh was sure of it. He could not return to General Vorin's home in failure, it would spell ruin for him and his family.
He sighed, exhaling a breath. His taloned hand reached up and flipped a few switches, broadcasting a hailing frequency on all available channels. Then, he activated the universal translator around his neck. As he spoke, it would relay his message in all documented languages.
Here we go, he thought to himself.
"Hailing any available, this is Shrike Teresh on behalf of the Valaxi Empire. Flight signature 07-12-2136. I wish to make contact with planet No. 626 and conduct diplomacy. My vessel possesses no weaponry, and I will consent to any scans that you request," Teresh concluded.
He flipped another switch to set the hail to repeat and sat back, exhaling.
Shrike huh? I guess it is a bit odd to hear it out loud. This is the first time I've been at the head of a ship, and the authority of one too, he bemused.
Typically, only the Valaxi piloted for high profile missions, diplomatic or otherwise. It was quite fair of them, they were the more intelligent, more advanced species after all. The kooli were thankful that they even got to fly Valaxi manufactured ships. It was obvious to anyone who has flown them that they handled far better, even if the controls were less friendly. As he thought to himself, a voice suddenly came over the communicator. Almost jostling him out of his seat.
"Vessel number 07-12-2136, you are to deactivate your hail and power down your engines. Failure to comply will result in your immediate seizure," the voice explained.
Is that what they sound like? He wondered. It was very different to anything he had heard before. His own people often spoke in a range of high to low tones, even reaching what some would call a shrill. The Valaxi's dialogue was much more refined and noble, often louder in tone due to their inherent dominance. Then there was the Bouva, Zeesh, Leo-oup, and so on, but nothing like this. The voice spoke in a very composed but neutral tone like his computer. Almost as if it was disinterested in the conversation. He wasn't going to complain though, he was going to do exactly what he was sent to do: comply.
He shut off the hail with a single switch, and then pulled back a lever to cool his engines until he was gently floating in space. He could see the speck of the planet in the distance. His ship currently listing by a larger, dark blue planet. From his scan, he found that it's composition was comprised mostly of dense fluids. Their crystalline structure being recognized as several substances and elements he was familiar with. Ammonia, methane, and water to name a few.
Teresh awaited the arrival of the aliens as he clicked his talons together, a bad habit of his. Hoping that the aliens were not looking to feast on his flesh. His eyes traced along the vastness of space, and then he saw it. He nearly jumped out of his seat as the ship grew larger in his viewport. It was easily five times the size of his vessel, dwarfing it as its shadow began to cast over him. The ship itself was squarer and more rectangular in shape. With a large body and small bridge elevated near the back. Far less elegant to the Valaxi craft that he was used to seeing, and even comparatively to the other species. Though, it was as much as he could expect from a fledgling species. Incredibly pragmatic, with almost no flair or elegance to speak of. It was mostly a dull brown and black in color, sporting some bright yellows with some kind of language written on the side.
"Computer, translate the writing to kooli," he announced, then drawing a talon around the script on the monitor in front of him.
A robotic voice answered him: "Analyzing input... Output: UNE Tarva."
As soon as he read the name, his ship jostled. He was able to catch himself on his chair, but found his ship gently being pulled towards the other.
Ah, so they've developed projected gravitational fields. Perhaps they aren't as primitive as I thought, Teresh concluded.
It wasn't the most impressive feat by any means, usually tractor technology was one of the first to come after space exploration, but it was a good sign. In part, it shows that this species is civilized enough not to immediately fire upon strangers or unrecognized ships. Even if they had, at least he would have perished instead of a Valaxi representative.
The front section of the vessel opened, revealing a large empty space with a few raised platformed areas and stairs leading to them. At the sight of them, Teresh noted that these creatures could not fly like himself. Most likely quadrupedal if he had to guess. He was actually quite astonished by how much space was afforded to his vessel. This was most likely a carrier, meant to hold many smaller ships during conflict. Why such a valuable ship was on its own is a question he couldn't answer. A flagship like this should have been surrounded by their navy if they had one.
"Computer, identify any and all weapons on the ships exterior," he spoke to it again, using the monitor to sieve back through the footage to find evidence of any.
Once more, he heard the generated voice speak, "Analyzing input... compressing footage... The query seems to possess: One, communication tower. One, hanger. Twelve, viewports. One, bridge. And four, unidentified objects."
The computer outlined them for him to see. They were located both on the top and bottom half of the ship, assuming it was mirrored. What he was able to see resembled a black box or base attached to a long tube. With what wiring he could see; it could be evidence of either laser or ion weaponry. Though, ion was a bit of a stretch considering their technology level. Still, for a flagship it was quite impressive. Much more heavily armed than most of the ships in the kooli's decommissioned navy. It paled in comparison to the Valaxi's capabilities, but it was important data to gather. Thankfully for them, they would not need a navy once they became a child species. The Valaxi always cared for and protected their children. They could rely on their military instead of their own.
There was movement in the corner of his eye, and he darted up to see a large hatch open on the platformed area. He strained his eyes as three figures emerged, his heart racing. They were much taller than himself, even matching the height of a Valaxi soldier. Wearing protective suits that were orange in color, he saw reflective, curved black mirrors turn towards his ship.
Was that their head, or another covering? He couldn't tell.
This clearly was their military. These soldiers were dressed head to toe in protective gear meant to shield them from harm. Their large mirror faces meant to intimidate their enemy and reflect their own fear back in them. Such cruel tactics and equipment, the abundance of weaponry on the ship, they had to be warmongers! Reaching down, he attempted to set off his distress signal, finding it disabled and nonfunctional. They had trapped him! He was going to be tortured or eaten and used as a weapon against the Valaxi. Teresh began to pray to his ancestors, asking them to protect his family and General Vorin's as they drew closer. He snatched the ceremonial blade at his hip, awarded to those chosen to go on these missions. His last show of loyalty to the empire was going to be dying an honorable death. He brought the blade to his neck as his ship's landing bay opened, feeling sharp pain in his neck.
"H-hello!? Sorry, the ship's nav can be a bit off-putting. It was from a prison ship," A voice called out. It was much softer, and lower in tone than the one he heard before. Its words echoing through his translator.
Sorry? Prison? I knew it, they're trying to manipulate me so they can imprison and torture me, Teresh panicked, though it stayed his blade.
He curled up in his chair, refusing to turn. Thankfully the translator masked his fear in his voice, "D-Don't come any closer, I won't let you take me alive!"
"Woah! Woah buddy! Hey, let's stay calm. I heard your hail, but it was garbled by system interference. We were just coming to pick you up," the voice replied. The fake sympathy in its voice sickened him.
Help him? Dressed in full regalia and on a prison ship no less! He would become a political prisoner at best and tortured to death at worst.
"You said this was a prison ship, y-you're going to capture and torture me for information. I won't let you!" Teresh yelled, though the translator could only do so much.
"Buddy, jeez! No! The ship’s nav was from a prison ship," The figure stopped, the steps no longer drawing closer. "Look, my name's Tom. I'm from Arizona. Let me take you back home, okay? Are you armed?"
Despite every instinct telling him to end it here, he swallowed and nodded. Then, realizing that they couldn't see him. His translator rumbled, "I have a weapon. Don't come closer."
"Alright, that's okay. I won't come any closer. Do you think you could put the weapon down for me?" Tom asked.
The Valaxi warned him about this throughout his training. Once surrendered, they would try to take as much information about the empire from them. Using it against him and his family. He couldn't bear to imagine the harm that these aliens could inflict on his home, even if the Valaxi were more than capable of exterminating them.
"Y-You're going to-" he began.
"I'm not going to torture you. No one is going to torture you. We want to help you. Take you somewhere safe," Tom continued, sounding almost compassionate in tone.
Even though he knew it was a lie, he clamped down on his beak. If there was a chance they were telling the truth, he could still complete his mission and bring honor to his family's name. There was always the blade if they weren't.
"O-Okay," Teresh muttered, the translator barely picking it up.
"Good!" Tom voice raised, causing Teresh to squawk in fear.
“Oh, sorry, sorry.” His voice suddenly softened again, "Didn't mean to be loud there. Do you think you could turn towards me now? Teresh, right?"
He flinched at hearing his own name through the translator. What options did he have? Either take a risk and listen to these aliens, or... damn it. He couldn't do it. Still a coward, even to the end.
With hesitancy, he began to turn his chair. Eyes widening as he saw the alien standing only a few of its strides away. It was bipedal, over a third taller than himself, towering above with two long arms with five talons each. Though, perhaps that was the wrong word since they appeared rather blunt. The bright orange of his suit was accented with black marks, including one down the middle in a perfect line. Teresh could see his own reflection in the black mirror of the creatures face. He looked small and afraid, curled up like a hatchling and clutching a small knife dotted with his blood. The creature held out its hands, causing him to flinch.
"O-oh wow. You... you're really..." the translator sputtered. Teresh heard a rumble from the beast as it composed itself, "My... My name is Tom. It's nice to meet you Teresh."
Although the taste of bile was in my throat, I swallowed and spoke, "G-Greetings Tom, my name is Teresh. I'd like to ask for your surrender."

There were 104 officers, non-commissioned officers, and soldiers on board, who had completed their shifts after dinner.
At 9:22 p.m., an explosion was suddenly heard. Everyone on board was thrown into the air and to the ground due to the great impact. Everything in the warship was overturned, and screams of pain heard from here and there. Even cold sea water began to enter the ship in a situation where it was impossible to see an inch due to a power outage. And the ship was tilted to the right. It was an emergency. All of them rescued their comrades using props, and escaped outside the ship.
Those who came out of the ship faced an unbelievable situation. The ship had been split in two. Its bow tipped 90 degrees to the right and sank more than half. Also, stern sank in the sea. Rescue operation had been begun immediately after the incident. However they could not find a single additional survivor. Of the 104 crew members, 46 were killed in action. Most of the dead were young people in early 20s. This ship is the Cheonan, a corvette of the Republic of Korea Navy. It had blocked illegal invasions by North Korean warships in the NLL(Northern Limit Line) since 1987.

After this incident, numerous conspiracy theories about the sinking of the Cheonan spread, and Korean society fell into chaos. At the time, it was during the ROK-US joint training period, but it was conducted more than 180 km from the corvette Cheonan. And the live-firing training had already ended on March 25, the day before the incident.
Meanwhile, there are claims that the Cheonan ran aground after a collision with an Israeli submarine. If an Israeli submarine wants to enter the West Sea, it must consult with South Korea, Japan, and China in advance. Also, since no wreckage other than the Cheonan was found at the scene, the claim that it collided with a submarine is completely false. And if a corvette collides with a submarine, its hull is distorted and not split in two.
South Korean government formed a public-private joint investigation team to find out the truth, and conducted a long-term investigation with experts from US, Australia, UK, and Sweden. As a result, it was revealed that a torpedo fired by a North Korean submersible exploded under the Cheonan, and the impact broke the it in two.

Since 2016, the government of the ROK has designated the fourth Friday of March every year as 'West Sea Defense Day' to honor the soldiers who sacrificed themselves to protect the territorial waters and freedom. The Honda HR-V crossover also features many similar options, with some – like cruise control and power windows – standard on all three trim models. Other amenities, like push button start and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, are similarly reserved for the higher trim models, while surprisingly SiriusXM radio is available on only the highest EX-L Navi trim. The HR-V also features only a 4-speaker audio system on its base model and a 6-speaker setup available only on its higher trim levels, as opposed to the Soul’s standard 6 speakers.

Both models feature similar cargo arrangements, with 60/40 folding front seats standard on every trim for both models and each offering some impressive available total cargo space: the Kia Soul beat out the Honda HR-V by a few inches, ringing up 61.3 cubic feet of cargo space over the HR-V’s 58.8 cubic feet.

Tech-wise, the HR-V seems to slightly beat out the Soul because of its impressive standard features, including a standard 5-inch color LCD touchscreen infotainment system in its base model and an available 7-inch high-resolution screen in the higher trim levels.

The Soul, on the other hand, offers only a 4.3-inch touchscreen available optionally in its base trim level or standard in its higher trim levels, with an 8-inch display only optional in the higher trim levels. This is a bigger screen, but doesn’t come standard like the higher-level HR-V’s touchscreen. In the Soul, however, this system comes standard with voice recognition and navigation, while these are only further additional options for the HR-V. Given the overwhelming similarities between these two models, it’s unlikely that anyone but a super experienced and finicky driver would really notice much difference. Each tends to differ most in exterior style, but remain similar in capabilities and interior amenities.

At an MSRP starting at $15,690, you’ll get roughly the same driving experience for your money’s worth over the $19,115 Honda HR-V base model. Officially got my first experience with the “get fucked club!” Joined AIRC as a reservist and ended up DOR’ing because of the time commitment. Got super lucky with CTR, started that whole process with the schoolhouse’s CPC here. Went in for my phone security interview and was told I was the unlucky bastard of the day. My T3 was closed out and never finished back in December. They closed it as “not applicable” but didn’t put why. Didn’t deny it, but didn’t approve it. Was told today that they will more than likely have to redo the T3 before they can start the T5. The only problem is…big Navy doesn’t like waiting for T3’s to be rerun and for me to sit in holding. They just had another guy go through and after waiting for 3 weeks, big Navy cut him and he had to re rate. My only other option on my job sheet that didn’t require a TS was BM. No offense to the hardworking and hard charging BM’s out there, but that’s not at all what I wanted to do. Was told to not even bother asking for a Seabee rate, because they never see them. Ugh.

I'm trying to get a better sense of the ships in the series, and while I can get plenty of references for their exteriors, I have a lot of trouble with the interiors. An example of this is the existence/nonexistence of a wardroom for the officers to have dedicated quarters on a brig sloop like the Sophie.
I thought the fact that it was based on the real life HMS Speedy would help me, but looking into that only raised more questions. Since the real Speedy didn't have the raised quarterdeck which Aubrey comments as being an odd addition, did it even have a Captain's quarters? Would that be unheard of in the royal navy?

🔸Confession shaping: our first steps towards making each Confession run vary in length and features. For this version of the game, the Denial confession is shorter and doesn’t require a trophy for Mountain entry.
🔸Loot and economy balance: recalibrating the economy to ensure that treasure collection and shopping give interesting choices and reduce inventory clogging

Routes: The Road Less Traveled

Stagecoach Tokens
The stagecoach itself now has 2 types of tokens: wheels and armor. These tokens do not recharge on their own, and must be replenished via the Wainwright at an Inn, for a cost. Wheel/armor Tokens can also be replenished via some encounters. Also, some stagecoach items can grant bonus wheels or armor.
When wheels or armor are full, the party gets a benefit. When they are exhausted, then it exposes the party to a new ambush – see below.

Route Types
Your journey has just gotten a little trickier! Roads are now generated with one of several route types, replacing the binary “fight/no fight” system we had. Icons are shown midway along the road segment on the minimap and are subject to scouting rules.
🔸Safe: no effect, functions as it currently does, rarest of the route types.
🔸Rough Patch: the potholes and poor driving conditions deduct 1 Wheel token
🔸Hazard: a region-themed ‘trap’ that deducts 1 Armor token.
🔸Combat: Functions as do the current road fights (except time limits have been removed)
🔸Oblivion Tear: An inkfire wall that increases Loathing by +1 when the coach passes through it.
Urgent Repairs!
The coach has been damaged, and the party set upon by Pillagers!
When either Armor or Wheel tokens are depleted, and you choose a route that would ordinarily deduct a token of said type (hazard or rough patch), this sets off a roadside ambush combat with a special mutator: Urgent Repairs.
Urgent Repairs procs every round and targets 1 hero, replacing their skill bar with a single skill: ‘Repair Coach’. This is essentially a stressless ‘pass’, and requires players to deal with 1 hero out of action that round. Furthermore, the party suffers a penalty based upon whether it was wheels or armor that were depleted to cause the ambush.

Wainwright Maintenance
The Wainwright screen now shows the max + current total of Armor and Wheel tokens. Tokens can be replenished for a relic cost.

Stagecoach Controls: Roads & Intersections
To reduce coach handling labor, and to better reflect the game’s identity as a strategic experience, coach controls and intersections have been modified. Tapping “w” or “up arrow” will set the coach in motion, and “s” or “down arrow” will stop it.
Intersections present as a click-and-hold (alternatively w/a/d hold) decision point. If you make your choice in advance, the coach will not slow down. However, if you are late in deciding, the coach will halt at the intersection, allowing you time to choose your path forward. These changes affect the overall feel of traversal, and will require a bit of adaptation for experienced players. We’ve found it better suits the game.
Also - thanks to some changes in our generation code, minimum distance between nodes has been tuned down, resulting in a typically shorter distance between nodes!
Pets
They’re here! Unlock them all at the Altar, name them, and enjoy their gameplay effects! There are 10 pets total in 5 different cages, which are visible on the coach exterior.
The first 6 pets unlocked have effects that synergize with specific categories of stagecoach items. The goal is to create stagecoach ‘builds’ focused around a pet. To achieve this, various stagecoach items now have a GEAR type tag and the effects on a pet will scale based on the number of those stagecoach items equipped.
For example:
Unnatural Owlet provides +5% Debuff Chance per Tinker's Gear equipped.
The Tinker’s Gear tag has been added to Explosives Magazine, Blueprint Tubes, Assay Gear, Tinker's Bench, and Trapmaker's Kit.
The final 4 PETS unlocked have powerful combat effects.
Valley 2.0 Refinements
The Valley has been significantly shortened, and the Altar has been placed before the Confession screen, so that you can visit it at the end of every run. This will allow you to unlock paths and heroes, and immediately use them.
With the Hoarder and assist node gone, shopping/prep for the expedition has been moved to the provisioner of the first Inn.

Loathing 2.0
The Loathing system has been extensively reworked.
Instead of accruing at Inn arrival, Loathing now builds when passing through Oblivion Tears, or by visiting void-touched locations. As before, combat reduces Loathing. However, if Loathing builds to its maximum, the Confession boss stirs and inflicts a confession-specific attack upon the party.
Depending on your confession/boss choice, the max Loathing effect is different, but in all cases, the final boss also gains a health buff. This bonus stacks each time Loathing is maxed out, so be careful out there!

Torch 2.0
The torch’s gameplay effects have also been revamped. The revision focuses on some thematic touches (chance of blind for heroes in the dark; chance of blind for monsters in the light) as well as removing some of the crit and DOT resist clutter.

Confession and Region Shaping
Here we have taken the first steps towards varying Confession structure. With two Confessions yet to come at 1.0, we can’t go too far yet. But for this version:
🔸DENIAL is now only two full regions long. It’s also restricted to only Sprawl and Tangle regions. Finally, entering the Mountain will not require a trophy. Loathing accrues more slowly in DENIAL, vs the other two Confessions
🔸RESENTMENT and OBSESSION are the usual length, with no region restrictions.
🔸Ordainment rates vary some by Confession
In the context of our 1.0 release, we see the Denial Confession as an introductory challenge intended to help players get accustomed to the game and its systems. We want defeating the first Confession to be an achievable goal that rewards players’ time. We also want to help ensure that they begin exploring the Altar. However, fear not! The full length and unrestricted DENIAL Confession will be available again as an option in the 1.0 version of the game. We expect to be offering some options as to how long of a run you wish to attempt, for any given Confession.

Loot and Economy Balance
Combat, Inn, and Stagecoach items have mostly been removed from battle rewards. These item types have been available from many sources, but the amount obtained from battles overshadowed the need to purchase from shops or seek out locations like Academic’s Caches or Assistance Encounters. This also contributed to an excess amount of items leading to tedious inventory management. We’ve also added and curated stock at the various shopping locations.

The balance adjustments are intended to ensure that every relic collected is valuable, and the shopping/outfitting interactions in the game are meaningful. Basically, bring things more into…balance.

Memory System Revamp:
Memory flow has been revised to better match the rearranged Valley (Crossroads/Altar order) and to be closer to our original design goals of linking memories directly to success against Confession bosses.
🔸Memory slots are no longer unlocked at the Altar of Hope
🔸Instead, each hero instance unlocks their own memory slot by defeating a Confession boss. Each unique Confession boss allows this hero to fill another memory slot, up to the maximum of 5. Victorious heroes with no memories need to purchase a memory at the next Altar of Hope to persist.
🔸Note that currently, only three slots can be unlocked because only three Confession bosses are in the game. Bosses 4 and 5 are coming at 1.0 release.
🔸Example: Boudica the Hellion wins Denial Confession. Now she can have a memory installed. If she beats Resentment Confession, she can put a second memory on.
🔸The Altar Memory track is used to unlock memory discounts as well as to give a better selection (more loot pulls) of the memories available to implant at any one time.

Notes on Memory for Experimental Release:
🔸When the new update is pushed, current runs will be invalidated.
🔸Memoried heroes on these runs will be moved out of the party and preserved
🔸Existing memoried heroes will have their memories preserved even if they have not defeated each boss
🔸Moving forward, any character not in a party must have a memory assigned to them to preserve them
🔸If a memoried hero is in your party, they will only persist if you are victorious
Assist Encounter Revamp:
🔸Assist Encounter choices have been thoroughly revised. The intent is to provide interesting choices for the party, primarily to help in the areas of torch, supplies, and repair.
🔸They still function the same way overall. Choices have been audited and redesigned with intent of making the rewards previewed both better and more consistent.
🔸Quirks are a major driver of special responses.
🔸It should be more likely that if you are desperate for torch and roll into an Assist location, that at least one hero will want to interact in a way that actually restores torch

Stagecoach Item Adjustments Overview
An increased focus has been placed on stagecoach items that produce combat items, which has been done a few different ways.
Changed Explosives Magazine from a stagecoach item that increases stacking to one that produces items with the explosives tag.
Updated increased stacking stagecoach items to align with the type of items produced.
🔸There’s an item that produces Poultices and another item that increases stacking for Poultices.
🔸We now have the functionality to increase stacking by item tag and type rather than unique items only.
Added additional effects to stagecoach items that have situational effects
🔸Hospital/Hoarder location scouting will also increase their shop selection
🔸Food barrel/Icebox getting additional effects based on the number of food items the player collects.

GAMEPLAY

🔸The length of region 3 in the full-length expeditions has been reduced to more closely match that of region 2.
🔸Region Goal rewards for Candles of Hope range increased from 1-3 to 3-5
🔸Altar track nodes have been added for wheels/armor
🔸SC items slightly more expensive to unlock the Altar
🔸Relics and baubles now stack at 40 (was 24)

Some Hero Paths have been converted to the new skill replacement system. In the case of Paths that had DMG buffs/debuffs, this will typically result in slightly higher values when factoring in the use of tokens such as Strength or Weak.
This work is planned for all hero paths on pre-Vestal release, and will be rolled out over time.

The Red Spark burned hard around the Zenti formation. Plasma fire erupted from the cruisers skirting the outside slamming into the shields of the Red Spark as she went for broke to reach the destroyers first. The ship rattled and shoot with each round as they slammed home. Every paw was white-knuckled waiting for either the shields to crack or for the fire to stop.
Up on the bridge, the officers were moving rapidly. Calling out cruiser shot trajectories in a vain effort to avoid them. There were just too many to completely dodge and still get to the destroyers in time. The Zenti knew this and were laying down the hate. Every gun in range was firing at maximum output to bring down the Red Spark.
“Captain, volleys from targets three, eight, and eleven are inbound!” Jess shouted from the sensor station.
“Prepare for evasive maneuvers! Engineering, how are the shields holding up?” Bonnie barked out.
“We’re running them past their limits cap! They won’t hold for long unless we can catch a break,” the engineering offer responded.
Bonnie pushed the Red Spark as hard as she could, making a mad dash for the minefield the destroyers had set up. The mines shone brightly on the scanners, multiplying as the distance shrank rapidly. Suddenly instead of plasma, the Red Spark was dodging friendly mines in her mad dash. Breaking through the minefield the Bonnie opened up the throttle in a drag race straight to the destroyers.
They reached the destroyers just in time to see the first line of Zenti ships hit the minefield. Explosions rippled through the void as hundreds of mines remotely activated, homing in on their targets. In seconds the Zenti lost their leading carrier and its accompanying six cruisers to the onslaught. The rest of the formation halted and began sending the carrier-borne escorts forward to scout for and remove any remaining mines.
While the Zenti systematically cleared the minefield Bonnie Red opened a hail to the captains of the destroyers to attempt to formulate some kind of plan. On the viewscreen of the Red Spark, two humans and one Dlamisan face popped up. The captains of the three destroyers, later to be nicknamed the Three Musketeers, looked at the Dlamisan pirate with no small amount of awe in their eyes.
The first to break the silence was the Dlamisan destroyer captain, his nameplate marking him as Porthos. “We must stop them from clearing the minefield. As it stands their larger vessels cannot get past the mines, but that will change rapidly if they can clear them unopposed,” he stated, cutting straight to the point.
“Aye. They need to be slowed. Do ye need our firepower to kill them or our shields to cover you? We’ve taken a beating and our reactor power output has dropped, so ye can’t have both sadly,” Bonnie replied.
“We’ll take your guns, I just hope that your armor is as good as you’ve claimed because none of us will be getting out of this unscathed,” Porthos decided after deliberating for a minute, the other two captains nodding with him.
“The Red Spark be the toughest ship in the galaxy lad. Together with me crew, we’ll do everything in our power to stop the bastard from hitting me home,” Bonnie replied reaching to shut off the view screen before Porthos interrupted her.
Our home Captain Red,” Porthos corrected before continuing, “You lead and we’ll mop up whatever you leave behind.”
Howls echoed from the bridges of all four ships as all the Dlamisans aboard screamed to the heavens in agreement with their orders. The humans were not to be outdone and joined in the howl with imitations of their own, adding a horrifying dissonance to the battle cry and striking true horror into the hearts of anyone brave enough to watch the recordings. To this day hearing the battle cry of the Republic navy over the radio waves scatters any enemy vessels from even the strongest of defensive positions.
The engines of the Red Spark lit up as she took off, leading the destroyers toward the minefield and the carrier escorts within it. The plasma cannons shot bright rounds into the void at the escorts as the Red Spark dodged and weaved through the friendly mines. Explosions ripped through the void as the shots connected blowing the minesweepers to smithereens.
Unhappy with the battering of their support vessels, the cruisers began logging plasma back at the Red Spark. The shots were largely unsuccessful, either bouncing off the armor of the ship due to the range or missing entirely. That changed as the Red Spark got closer. The escorts began converging and the shots from the cruisers got more powerful and accurate.
Suddenly the ship began rattling as the blows from the cruisers started making their homes in the hull. The call came from on high and damage control teams were sent scrambling to patch the holes and fix the broken systems.


TEAMS TWO AND FIVE COVER DECK THREE! WE’VE GOT BREACHES ALL UP AND DOWN THE HULL!” Cookie shouted, ordering the teams across the ship to their respective positions.
The plasma was coming in thick and fast, quickly beginning to overwhelm the damage control teams. The small holes in the armor were quickly starting to become large gashes leaking atmosphere into the void.
“TEAM THREE TO ME! WE’LL COVER DECK ONE. PROTECT THE BRIDGE AT ALL COSTS!” Cookie barked grabbing the team and dropping to all fours, sprinting to the deck to begin their work.
They began their work immediately upon arrival. Donning vac suits the damage control team began placing hull patches over the gashes in the exterior rooms before sealing off their inner doors hoping to keep the remaining atmosphere within the ship.
As Cookie was welding an interior door the ship shook hard from something large hitting it. Not wasting a second he opened his datapad, looking through the engineering logs to find the breach and order the remaining teams to it. To his shock the damage was on deck three, just where he’d sent two of his teams not but a few minutes ago. Reaching for his radio he called the teams asking for a damage report.
“Teams two and five, damage report. What’s going on down there?” Cookie asked.
All he got in response was static. Calling again, this time more frantically Cookie waited for a response. When none came he opened his radio to the ship's emergency channel and began broadcasting to all the Red Spark’s damage control and medical teams.
“We’ve lost all contact with deck three. Damage control teams two and five have gone dark. Team one, respond to deck three immediately and begin rescue operations if possible. Team four you are responsible for roving damage control. It looks like it's just us three teams left, don’t take any unnecessary risks. Isolate entire decks if need be. Prioritize keeping the guns, engines, and shields up and running. Sacrifice everything else,” Cookie ordered before taking a breath and continuing, “McCoy, if you can hear this, I need you to send medics to deck three. I don’t know if anyone’s left, but save who you can.”
The radio chirped with conformations from the damage control teams as they began to move towards their designated locations. Just as Cookie was going to key the radio again to call McCoy and his medics one word broke through the static, “Understood.” The voice was clearly McCoy’s so Cookie left it there, content with any answer, as the door he was welding began leaking atmosphere again. As he finished the last spots in the door reports from team one began to come in.
“Deck three is gone! Whatever the hell hit us wiped straight through stem to stern! I’m seeing void on my port and starboard. There’s nothing left!” Team one’s lead barked into the radio.
“Confirm complete loss of deck three. Check any sealed rooms left for survivors and make any necessary repairs to the keel. Once done, report to engineering and keep them alive. We need those shields!” Cookie responded.


“Captain, Cookie is reporting the complete loss of deck three! No sign of survivors,” Shouted Sunny from comms.
“We’re down to 40% efficiency on our remaining point defense cannons and ammo for those is running low,” Interjected Charlie from the weapons station.
“Shields are failing rapidly! Critical sections are going to be vulnerable Captain!” Called out the engineering officer.
Bonnie sat there taking in the bad news. Once sure that each was thoroughly done speaking she piped up and began to issue orders.
“Prioritize shields for the engines and reactor, everything else can burn, the bridge included,” Bonnie ordered pointing at her engineering officer before rotating to point at Charlie. “See what ammunition can be transferred from the damaged weapons. Keep the guns firing as long as possible,” Finally she turned to Sunny, “Tell Cookie to do what he can to keep the ship from falling apart and send a message to our counterparts. Tell them to follow us as we back off to regroup,” Bonnie finished.
As the messages went out Bonnie turned the Red Spark towards Earth. Gunning it to the relative safety of the planet’s upper orbit. The destroyers were not far behind, each of them trailing flames, atmosphere, and pieces of their hull. After escaping the firing arc of the cruisers, the ships circled the wagons and let the damage control teams go to work while the captains re-opened their comms and tried to make a new plan.
Porthos opened the meeting, getting straight to the point. “Their escort force has been decimated and their mine clearing has certainly slowed. We bought some time, but not enough. We need a new plan.”
“Matey I be nearly out of ammo and we were nearly torn asunder by those cruisers. On top of that, we don’t have a starboard plasma battery no more. Not to mention our shields are down to covering only the most vital areas. We won’t even be able to get close to the Exterminator before we’re shredded and we stand the best chance out of any of ye,” replied an obviously stressed Bonnie, dipping deep into pirate speak.
Porthos took a breath and looked at his fellow destroyer captains, seeming to ask an unspoken question to which they both nodded yes. Turning back to Bonnie he laid out the idea, “We’ll be your shields if you think your plasma battery can break them.”
Bonnie looked at the destroyer captains, doing a quick count in her head, adding up the total crew count on each and coming to a number that hurt her hearts. After thinking for a moment she looked at her own crew and the determination on their faces, and Bonnie Red came to her conclusion. “If there were ever a ship that could do it, it’s the Red Spark.” And with those fateful words, the die was cast.
As the last of the mines were being cleared the three musketeers and the Red Spark came charging in. The destroyers made a bubble around the flanks of the Red Spark. Each destroyer focused their shields on sections of the Red Spark not covered by their own hulls. The plasma started sporadically. The cruiser escorts were apparently surprised that the posse was back for more. The surprise did not last long and the plasma started flying thick and fast. The destroyers were being battered but sent out as much return fire as they could manage. It wasn’t a lot, but it took the focus off of the Red Spark at the center of the group.
It didn’t take long for the first of the musketeers to fall. A broadside from several cruisers at near point-blank range tore the ship in two. Leaving her tumbling through the void, her point-defense weapons on backup power spit hateful trails of light at the Zenti around her in a last act of spite. As payment for that, she was blasted to stardust by the surrounding cruisers.
The posse was deeper into the formation when the next destroyer fell. The fire from the cruisers had become less in volume as they broke through the center of the formation, but it was no less accurate. The destroyer to the starboard side of the Red Spark died a death of a thousand cuts as the point defense weapons of the nearby cruisers peppered her hull. To her credit, she held out until her engines died and fell away from the pack. To be torn further apart by the Zenti following behind.
The last destroyer and the Red Spark were bearing down on the Exterminator when all of the sudden their Zenti pursuers broke contact and began to run. Bonnie didn’t immediately notice why and for a brief moment thought to celebrate. That was until she saw the main guns of the exterminator turning to the Red Spark. They had been corralled straight into the firing line of the main guns of the behemoth!
The captain of the last destroyer, Porthos himself, opened up every comms channel and belted out a battle cry as he threw his destroyer into the side of the evading Red Spark pushing her further into her turn away from the cannons of the Exterminator. In doing so he saved the Red Spark but doomed himself. The guns flashed and titanic plasma rounds sailed straight down the bow of the destroyer and several Zenti cruisers behind it who didn’t get away fast enough, instantly atomizing them all.
The Red Spark had her promised opportunity. In front of her was the Exterminator with its main guns out of position and recharging. Not planning to waste the sacrifice of the brave sailors who got them to this point Bonnie immediately began belting out orders.
CUT THE ENGINES, SHUT DOWN THE SHIELDS, AND SCRAP THE LIFE SUPPORT! PUT IT ALL IN THE CANNONS! THIS IS OUR ONLY SHOT WE GOT TO MAKE IT COUNT!” Bonnie barked out, sending her bridge officers to work.
The lights on the ship dimmed and the gravity cut out as everything poured into the plasma cannons for one last barrage. The Red Spark shook with the first shot, then the second, and the third. With each following shot, the ship shook less and less as her power drained. It was at the 18th shot when the cannons finally fell silent. Their barrels were warped and their housings cracked, but they served their purpose.
The Exterminator took the first half dozen shots straight to the shield with next to no reaction, until suddenly by the eighth shot the shields shattered. Sensing blood in the water the bridge crew howled in the dark as they watches the remaining ten shots land on the bow of the Exterminator. The rounds penetrated deep into the bowls of the exterminator, blowing apart the port main cannon and appearing to cripple the rest of the port point defense weapons. Suddenly lights all over the Exterminator went out and its engines lost their dark glow as the ship appeared to lose power.
The bridge crew of the Red Spark was ecstatic. They had done it, they had brought down the mighty beast. Their white whale was slain. Howls of victory echo through the Red Spark from every breathing mouth as word passed. After a minute of howls in the dark, the engineers were able to restore emergency backup power allowing the lights, life support, comms, and gravity to be turned back on.
As suddenly as the celebrations began, they ended. There were lights coming back on from the Exterminator. Abruptly, the engines flickered back to life and the Exterminator began moving again. The worst part of it all came when the remaining secondary batteries came online and began firing at the Red Spark. Scarily they didn’t shoot to kill. No, they shredded the Red Spark’s engines and then fell silent, seeming to dare the little ship to retaliate. Having spent all their fight, the bridge crew of the Red Spark just sat in silence as they watched the Exterminator bear down on their stricken ship.
Sunny looked at Bonnie, dread apparent in her eyes before speaking, “Captain, we have a hail from the Exterminator.”
