2023.06.07 20:10 45acp_LS1_Cessna Pics of deck I need to sand deck....do I need random orbital or drum sander? Just looking for some guidance based on your experiences
Previous owners were lazy and slapped paint on flaking paint. I want to do things right and rent some machine(s). I have a 5 inch corded random orbital and 21 inch belt sander for the hand rails but I need something for the floor boards. I know a drum sander is best but the "wear grooves" intimidate me and I'm hoping
this random orbital would be enough
paired with this for the hard to reach areas.
Just for kicks I tried an 80 grit 5 inch disc (handheld random orbital) on some flaking floor board paint and
within seconds I got this result, I'm not sure if thats an indicator that the full size random orbital would work or if I'm just lying to myself.

I also saw a few people who say you need the drum sander in addition to the random orbital. I'm feeling a little lost and I know alot of you guys are super good with this sort of stuff so I'm just looking for some guidance.

2023.06.07 19:54 notMyRealNameObvious First Timer - Ambitious Garage and Shed
Hi everyone, hoping for any and all advice for making my Garage and Shed solar in Rural Canada.
In terms of power requirements, I'm going to be starting small with lots of LED lights for both inside and outside the shed, charging stations for ryobi tools (40V and 18v), and outlets for other power tools like handsaws and sanders. Ideally though, in the future I'd want to be able to more electrical things like a mini computer, fridge, and maybe even a TV. So ideally I want a system that's going to be easily upgradable.
I'm either very bad at googling, or solar panels in Canada are ridiculously overpriced (
Canada vs
US equivalent) although yes I know that buying from a retailer instead of direct will include some markups.
I'm thinking of getting two of those 600 watt off grid panel kits so that even in Winter when there's about 4 hours of sunlight I'm getting a decent charge.
For an inverter, my basic understanding tells me that a pure sine inverter wouldn't make a different for my needs so I'm thinking of going with a modified sine wave inverter similar to
this.
For a battery, I haven't decided yet. With winters dropping almost to -40C, I'm leaning towards LiFePO in an insulated box and possibly with a heating pad as well.
I don't pretend to fully understand this all, I'm learning as I go and think this will be a great DIY project. Any and all advice or criticisms are welcome.

Please help furnish bedroom without closets
My dad converted part of one of the living rooms into a temporary bedroom for me but doesn’t want to add closets since it’s a lot of work for him. I’m trying to figure out how to have all my stuff out on display without it looking cheap but having difficulty with the room layout. I have a lot of clothes and a decent amount of shoes/bags. I also have a
55 inch desk and a
large standing mirror. I don’t mind removing the desk if there’s a more efficient/better looking alternative. 2nd photo is after the wall was added, the rest are before since I don’t have current photos (ignore clutter please). Last pic is potential inspo. I probably have 3-4 times as many clothes as hanging in that photo 😅 I also have this
IKEA bed frame that I don’t mind changing to something else

2023.06.07 05:43 RenegadeBuilder Favorite Valves and Controller for 2023?
I am in Zone 5 (so plenty of heat and also plenty of frost, 36" frost depth). Only trenching sprinklers in 6 to 8 inches, and planning on blowing out the lines with air each winter. Only mentioning this in case it makes a difference on the valves. I might put in a few auto-drains as well for semi failsafe those cold fall mornings. I am running 1" Blu-Lock tubing to all my zones (no 3/4) and looking at the options for valve & controller suggestions. Hydro-rain (Orbit) makes their own Blu-Lock valves but I'm not opposed to putting 1" male threads on my blu-lock runs so that I can use any valve that has 1" female outlet (and inlet?).
Right now I am leaning towards Hunter PGV like this? (
Home Depot Link). As far as I know they are compatible with any controller running on 24V setup. Not sure if I really need flow control. The controller and valve market seems over saturated now and there are just so many things to sift through. I'm looking for an economical choice for now and maybe leaving it so I can buy a fancier controller later if it has perks over the old style controllers. One that could maybe be controlled with smartphone and is intelligent enough to sense when it rained or is raining. No subscription crap though.
For now I am feeding the manifold I build from full flow 3/4 hose bibs (10GPM/85PSI) If I like the setup and find it a hassle to disconnect and reconnect each spring/fall I may hard pipe everything.

2023.06.07 05:24 LTW2022 Lutron Switch Help - New switch wont work
I have a basic understanding of electrical, I can do the basics but am stumped by what is happening when trying to install my Lutron Switches. A few months ago I installed a Lutron
Claro Smart Switch, which works as a three-way switch with no dimmer. I decided that I wanted to install a
Lutron Diva Smart Dimmer instead.
I thought this would be an easy swap out, considering these are the same brand and (I assumed) the color coding of the wires would be the same. However, when I swapped out the switch, the lights glowed dimly and the switch would not turn on or operate, including on the non-smart side. I tried everything I could think of, switched wires around, and followed the wiring diagram, but no matter what I just get a dim glow from the light and the switch will not operate. I placed the Claro switch back on and it works perfectly. I cannot figure out why one switch would and the other wouldn't.
Any help would be appreciated!
- I have tried almost every combination of wires on the switch and still no luck.
- I have tried the smart switch in location two.
- The side (I assume) is the load, the black wire has tape on it
- The Claro switch requires a neutral, the Dimmer does not.
- I tried a second dimmer switch to make sure it wasn't a dud, same results
- Installed the same unit on a single switch light and it works great.

2023.06.07 03:06 movingpx Plug in timer for variable speed pump?
Hi everyone. New homeowner with an above ground pool here. I bought
this timer to use with my pool pump. I have a Hayward PowerFlo VS 300. It seems to work ok, but when the timer cuts power the pump stops HARD. It also throws an error message “05” which is “IPM over-current hardware protection”. Does anyone have any experience with this? Should I find another solution for a plug in pump timer? Does anyone have any suggestions from their setup? Thanks!
Edit: Doing more reading about variable speed pumps. Am I thinking of this wrong? Should I run this thing 24/7? My pump has 3 presets:
1 - runs the pump at a low RPM (indefinitely?) 2 - runs the pump at a medium RPM for 24 hours then back to speed 1. 3 - runs the pump at a high RPM for 2 hours then back to speed 1.
What I don’t know, in setting 3 will the pump return to the high RPM after 24 hours or do I have to push the button every time I want to run the pump at a higher setting?

2023.06.06 17:00 imaginary_neighbor Improving my wooden truss design.
Hello
Construction!
I'm building a 24'x16' two story garage, based on the "
Jefferson Garage" plans from Sentry Buildings.
In this manual, they call for the construction of second story trusses made from 2x6 boards, with OSB gussets (
see picture).
From all my reading on the subject, plywood/OSB is not the preferred building method, but I didn't want to significantly deviate from the established plans.
My though was to put 3x6 20 gauge steel "
mending/truss plates" on the joints first, and then apply the OSB gussets over them.
I'd like your thoughts on this idea, or any other suggestions you have that might improve on this design.
Thank you, in advance, for keeping me safe!

2023.06.06 02:05 dantepopplethethird Bicycle Shed Storage
I'm hoping to store 3 bikes in a shed in my house's side alley. For security reasons it's gotta be a shed not merely something that keeps the rain off. What I'm thinking at the moment is to get a tall shed so I can store them vertically (see link, mb will find similar but wider).
1) Has anyone tried this?
2) What hooks might work on a plastic shed? (I'm not seeing that Rubbermaid makes any bike hooks that work with its ehds)
3) Is it hard to take bikes on/off for any reason in a vertical shed?
What I have currently is a horizontal shed (it's moving to the backyard, we're scaling up bike storage capacity) that's 6ft x 4ft, with no tracks. So it fits 2 bikes easily and isn't too much PITA. Once it gets up to 3 it's cramped and it becomes a real PITA. I'm open to horizontal options (60"x60" is fine, 70"x70") mb if they have built in tracks or are otherwise easy to operate without constantly shuffling bikes.
