2023.06.07 17:34 AutoModerator /r/PokemonScarletViolet will be going dark from June 12-14 in protest against Reddit's API changes which will kill 3rd party apps.
What does this mean?
During this period,
PokemonScarletViolet will be set to Private,
meaning that the subreddit will be inaccessible to all users and no new posts or comments can be made. Instead of being able to view and visit the community, you will be served a blank page message like
this one (the message will be customized to share why we are temporarily private).

What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app
permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from
Apollo to
Reddit is Fun to
Narwhal to
BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th,
many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away
permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because
we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the
goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can
you do?
- Complain. Message the mods of reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at Save3rdPartyApps and ModCoord- but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
- Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
- Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

What can you do as a moderator?
Thank you for your patience in the matter, ** Personal Note from your BEC Mod:** This issue is important to me as someone who uses the Reddit is Fun app for 99% of their reddit browsing. This app uses less data, allows me to block
all and
popular which I was prone to doom scrolling, and I was able to make a one time payment to go ad free. It is also a lot easier to do some moderation tasks in the RIF app vs in the official app, such as getting to a specific comment thread where something has been reported so I can read the full context.
During the protest dates,
BitchEatingCrafters will be set to restricted. This means no new posts can be made during this period. I want to encourage y'all to stay off reddit, so if you're coming here just for this sub on those dates, you're going to be disappointed. Other craft subs are participating as well.
Someone on
ModCoord made a
nice little infographic which explains a lot of what's going to happen with reddit's API changes.

2023.06.07 17:18 k_klash Mnemonikey Determinstic PGP key recovery using phrases v0.0.1 prerelease published
I have published my first ever tagged release of Mnemonikey, a novel CLI tool and Go library which allows PGP users to derive their PGP keys deterministically from a seed which is exported as a phrase of 14 words for easy offline backup. This works much in the same way keys for Bitcoin wallets can be deterministically derived from a recovery phrase.
As far as I'm aware, Mnemonikey is the first of its kind, rhyming only with the related but conceptually different
passphrase2pgp tool, from which I drew my original inspiration.
This first release marks a point which I feel is suitable for a v1 release, but before that I'd first like to send out some feedback requests in various communities to ask for final feedback and, for those most interested, testing of the library and/or CLI tool.
Since
my original post in /crypto, the ripest fruits of prior feedback have been implemented. Notably:

2023.06.07 17:13 remog /r/Drupal will be going dark from June 12-14 in protest against Reddit's API changes which kill 3rd party apps.
Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps!
As advocates for Open Source and open technologies, these changes affect us all and represent a disturbing trend across various services and companies across the web. This is why I feel
Drupal should join in taking this stand.
The remainder of this is taken from the post on
Save3rdPartyApps:
What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users. This change also effectively kills all bots and tools used by Moderators and communities across reddit.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customising Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do?
Complain. Message the mods of
reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message
reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on
reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at
ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible. This includes not harassing moderators of subreddits who have chosen not to take part: no one likes a missionary, a used-car salesman, or a flame warrior.

Tl;dr:
/cscareerquestions will go dark on June 12 for at least a week in protest of Reddit's API changes that will kill third party apps, such as Apollo, RIF, and others. We will start with a week but may extend later on. We want to balance our protest with the needs of the community.
I wanted to cross-post this but ironically Reddit's cross-posting is broken at the moment.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
2023.06.07 17:11 endersgame69 Adopted By Humans VII C17
We could only listen while everything was explained to us, and… there was quite a lot. If you are really curious, the archives of our meeting were recorded by both the human Presider and by Livingston, who recorded the details of the meeting and their thoughts on the matter in their autobiographies.
The particulars are not necessary here.
With that understood, there are a few matters of relevance that I will mention and add my thoughts to.
First was the covert nature of the meeting. Given the nature of Rebecca and William’s work, not to mention the role of myself and Fauve’s media activities with the Barnum Cooperative, a secure ‘hard line’ was installed in the Walker household.
These ‘hard lines’ were exceptionally rare and were used exclusively for only the highest level business. The human Presider even had a single room expressly with nothing but these ‘hard lines’ leading to the embassies of multiple alien species. Those of us in the ‘Rapax’ category were, according to what I could glean from the news, spoken to most often.
Not that they told us in detail, but mentions of meetings and conferences with other species was still novel enough that it bore a mention, and at an off the hand ‘back of the napkin’ calculation I would say roughly seven out of ten such reports on a monthly basis involved meetings with other predators.
At least four out of ten from that total were with my own homeworld, unsurprising as we were the first species to discover Earth and humans…or encounter, if you hear the humans tell it. But more importantly trade was growing rapidly between us, so dealings were more frequent.
It all grew from there.
And now here we were on a hard line with the Presider and my world’s Ambassador Livingston and I was living out history again.
The details of this meeting that are relevant here, I will relay in their words.
“We will be dispatching one squadron of our warships to the Zenlu system, the world there… it doesn’t have its own name as far as we know, but according to intelligence it is fairly primitive. There are three predator species with thick space routes to it, the slenga, retarians, and triterons. They’ve managed to live two warp routes away from one another for three thousand years without fighting each other.” The Presider let that sink in, I wasn’t immediately familiar with them… but the system sounded familiar.
‘Probably something Bonny Red mentioned in one of her stories.’ I assumed, and he went on, bringing up the map and pointing to the location.
“The system is large enough to host a squadron from each of the Hundred Terrors and more besides, and we will be discussing the ‘recent events’ that have become a cause for concern.”
He didn’t need to explain what he meant, we all knew. Thanks to the increased cooperation between our two governments, we both knew that our automated probes, autoships, and a handful of physical worldbound or moonbound settlements had been attacked.
And if it happened to us both, and if it was happening to the ones we’d so recently classified as ‘Praeda’ then the chances were good it was happening on a far broader scale.
Who could blame anyone for the high tensions?
Truth be told, it makes me think all the fuss over my ‘games’ was a little…excessive.
“And while that is happening?” The Presider shifted his focus to Livingston, and as if they had prearranged for this moment the two spoke at the same time.
“You will be going too.”
“To Zenlu?” I asked. “And who? Me?” I put my hand over my chest. That was a lot of travel, plus… “But what about my doctorate? I mean, I haven’t even finished all my research? I still haven’t even seen a human male go through puberty yet, I’ve heard that is a very dramatic time and-”
“No.” Livingston interrupted.
“The rest of you…and you.” He leveled his finger at myself, then at the rest of the Walker family.
“And not to Zenlu. You will be going to the Sagittarii system star designation WR one-zero-two.” The Presider answered.
I noticed that it seemed like the Presider and my world’s ambassador were finishing each other’s sentences. There was no good way to ask however, whether this was because they got along as well as they did or whether or not it was because the two shared the exact same frustrations with various…
Shenanigans, and were just used to going back and forth in this way.
I suppose that knowledge is lost to science forever.
The Walkers looked at me as I sucked in my breath.
“What?” William asked. “Why does that matter?”
“That’s your designation for a star system, it’s the hottest star in the galaxy, about thirty-thousand light years from here, and it’s also a ‘thick space’ hub for the majority of the Praeda designated species in the known galaxy. Home to multiple space stations and it is considered to be neutral ground for all who go there. It’s where ‘The Common’ meets.” I explained, and William cleared his throat.
“What is ‘The Common’?” He asked.
“In your terms, Mr. Walker, you might call it ‘The Praeda Common’ like your old ‘League of Nations’ if I remember your history, a place where the many species can converse with one another to work out differences. However, unlike your League of Nations, only those evolved from prey species or ‘Praeda’ to use your term, are allowed as members. Rapax might visit, but only on one single, neutral ship.”
“I… I don’t understand. Why are we going? I have work and…” Rebecca started to object, but ceased when William’s hand found her shoulder. His touch with her was typically very gentle, and this was no exception. But I noticed that in conversation, they usually had a bit of separation in their space, and neither initiated physical contact until after the discussion was over…except if it was serious.
So when he touched her shoulder, she understood he felt something far more serious was afoot, and the Presider explained.
“It seems impossible, I realize this. Normally we would field armies of diplomats, normally we would start making negotiations early, we would do… a lot of things. But there is no precedent for this in recorded history, there is but one example I know of, and I’m using that as my inspiration… in the hopes that it might work.” He paused and drank a glass of water, and if I may say for the sake of history, he looked very weary.
Humans age faster than dlamisa, but in that moment, looking at their presider with his wrinkled face and weary expression, it seemed he’d aged fifty Earth years before my very eyes. I couldn’t help but pity him.
“I won’t make you go, I won’t even ask Livingston to order it of you, Bailey Walker.” He said, a strain like a taut string underlay his voice as he spoke. “But centuries ago, there was a time of great hatred, fear, and loathing between the people of this place, in the country that once stood here, and a place on the far side of the world. A land that lived behind a curtain of iron, both sides lived in terror of one another… both armed with the kinds of weapons that would eventually nearly destroy us. And there was a young human girl who wrote to their Premier, like their Presider. She asked him ‘if he would vote for peace or war’.”
The Presider chuckled a little, “The story goes that he actually wrote back. The story spread, and as it happened, the young girl and her family went to the far side of the world and met the people there, and her words echo down to me today. She said, ‘They’re just like us.’ It did not end the darkness, but it did thaw out the ice between the two a little. My hope is that if we send a handful of people, people we know want nothing but the best for us all… that maybe, if my colleague will pardon the expression, if we ‘humanize’ ourselves to them… then perhaps we will no longer seem like monsters in the darkness to their eyes or…whatever they have.”
I would later check in to the Presider’s story, it turned out he was right. Such an incident did truly occur in the nineteen eighties of their old calendar.
“Knowing that… will you go?” He asked.
“What if something happens?” Rebecca asked, “We’ll be trapped, what if they do us harm, or take us hostage?”
“It is…possible.” Livingston acknowledged, “But we will make it clear that this will be an act of war, and like your old ‘League of Nations’ they have no ability to compel the others to go along with anything. Plus you will reside on the safest ship in the known galaxy.”
“Wait-” I said, but just then a connection buzz rang out, and another face appeared on the projection.
“Aw’right ye land lubbers, ye listen up good, me an me crew’ve been right busy for a fair bit, but we’re in bound fer Earth and we’ll be there in half an Earth Orbit, little delay over me original plans but…shenanigans bein what they be, it cannae be ‘elped, savvy? So, are ye goin or are ye not?” Bonny Red said at once.
“I’ll go.” I answered.
A nod passed between husband and wife, and the two said at once.
“And so will we.”
And just like that, it was settled.

2023.06.07 17:10 k_klash Mnemonikey Determinstic PGP key recovery using phrases v0.0.1 prerelease published
Y'all were extremely helpful when I made my initial feedback request, and by now the ripest fruits of that feedback have been implemented. Notably:
For a detailed specification and elaboration, see the Mnemonikey README. submitted by

2023.06.07 17:05 kjmci /r/CitiesSkylinesModding will be going dark from June 12th in protest against Reddit's API changes
Hello, Mayors and Modders
Starting at 00:01 UTC on Monday 12/06/2023,
/CitiesSkylinesModding will be "going dark" for at least 48-hours. This means we will set the subreddit to private and you will not be able to access it, view posts, or add comments.
y tho?!
This is part of a
broad-ranging protest against Reddit's plans to implement prohibitive API costs for 3rd-party apps and services - in some cases expecting app developers to pay
20x more per user than Reddit themselves earn.
Although you may not personally rely on these apps and services (we know that around 45% of our members use the first-party Reddit iOS and Android apps), they're critical to the way you and others experience Reddit:
y us?
When considering whether to participate in this action, the moderation team reflected on the nature of the Cities: Skylines community. Specifically, we were reminded of the creativity and ingenuity on display every single day which has been enabled by embracing open software principles and a spirit of collaboration.
Imagine for a moment:
- How limited the modding and asset-creation scene would be if Colossal Order made access to the editors a paid-for feature?
- What the game would be like if content creators had to pay Steam a fee for every 100 downloads of their mods or assets?
- If the game would have given rise to so many popular YouTube creators (some with millions of subscribers) if Paradox required a cut of their revenue?
- How much longer our games would've been broken after each update if the modding community preferred to "close-source" their mods, making it impossible for new modders to take over and patch abandoned mods?
- Whether the original game would've had such enduring popularity to warrant the creation of a sequel if the situations above had occurred?
Our game and community has been made so much richer as a result of the principles of fair and open access, so it feels right that we support activity to promote those same values for Reddit itself.
wat now?
There is
an open letter you may wish to read and sign.
Other actions you can take:
- Email Reddit or create a support ticket to communicate your opposition to their proposed modifications.
- Complain. Message the mods of /reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /reddit, such as this one.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join /ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
- Show your support by participating in the Reddit boycott (especially by not using the Reddit iOS and Android apps) starting on the 12th of June.

2023.06.07 17:04 wndrgrl555 Brother HL-2350DW Intermittent Print Job Completion
What's going on?
Intermittently, I attempt to print from a 2023 Mac Mini running Ventura 13.4a (22F66), the printer clicks as if the element is coming on, and then does not print.
If I power cycle the printer, I get one print job that works successfully, and then subsequent jobs fail.
The printer queue on the Mac does not produce errors. It thinks the job completes successfully.
The LCD on the printer does not produce errors. It goes from "Ready" to "Receiving Data" back to Ready.
This issue does NOT appear to happen when my roommate prints from a Samsung Galaxy S21.
Any pointers are most appreciated.
