2023.03.30 07:53 collegethrowaway157 now i understand why you’re not supposed to combine caffeine & ADHD meds

btw i’m 17F and bmi 21.8 which is also why i’m surprised i’m having this issue
wtf do you do when you’re nauseous because of hunger but also nauseous because of food like pls help i’m actually freaking out rn
ok so i ate mostly normally during the day, had like 650 calories at school and since i usually have most of my calories at dinner after track i thought i was fine. had my usual celsius at like 3 after school.
went for a run because i didn’t have track practice today. drank another celsius and took my evening adhd meds and went to run at like 6:30. decided to just go as long as i could & ran five miles & watch says i burned 593 calories and then got home and showered and went to eat dinner at 10.
made a sandwich and it looked so good but after about halfway i felt so nauseated and i physically couldn’t eat it and now i’m freaking out because i know i need to eat something and i physically can’t force anything down because i feel like i’m going to vomit.
i’m so nauseous because of not eating but now i’m also nauseous because i ate and i can’t concentrate on anything but my stomach and i have two tests tomorrow that i need to study for and now i’m panicking

2023.03.30 07:27 LurkingAccountOnly Why I am an awful person who deserves nothing good, and everyone's previous reassurance here is invalid (DO NOT DO THIS THIS TIME)

Do not provide support, I will reject it. Mods, please remove all restrictions on negative comments solely for this post.
So, I made a previous post here explaining why I suck for retroactive reasons, but I'm going to explain why everyone's reassurance there is completely invalid, since it's blatantly obvious I'm still a piece of crap today. I carefully (and probably secretly self-servingly) omitted all my current shitty behaviour in the last post:
At the end of the day it boils down to the fact that I had to forcibly "learn" not to be a complete piece of shit in EVERY. SINGLE. AREA. A decent person would not have to do this. They'd at least have had some areas where they didn't fucking suck out of the gate. They wouldn't have been deeply hated in every single environment until they forcibly started performing the motions of basic fucking decency.
And regardless, I still did it in the past, and still created piles of consequences for other people which many still deal with today. In some cases it's absurdly serious - like my Mom still has mental and neurological health problems downstream of dealing with me as a kid (although she doesn't admit it), including LITERALLY HAVING STRESS-INDUCED MS AND LOSING PART OF HER VISION (she blames other things, but I've pieced the reason together - it's impossible to hide).
And I'm not looking for reassurance here, so DO NOT provide it, I WILL ignore it. I'm just shouting into the wind. Western society has become way more socially tolerant and understanding, so nothing kind anyone says to me can ever be trusted, since the impulse is now towards reassurance (which is awesome for humanity, but it leads to the mistaken notion that I deserve support too. 100% false, please don't).
Also, don't try to pull "you probably have undiagnosed level 1 autism," because 1. most level 1 autistic people didn't cause this level of hell for everyone around them (my son is, so I also see this first-hand); 2. It would've been detected at least once; and 3. I inexplicably seem to be well-liked now, which isn't common with level 1 autistics. And #3 doesn't mean jack-shit. Many secretly just like my wife. Others are just extra-kind people who tolerate my crap (my friends are all odd albeit lovely people). Still others are fooled by the constant acts of false kindness, memorized social skills, weird sense of humour (mostly just memorized social skills mixed with sharp edges I allow to peek through if I suspect it'll amuse people), and fake "competence." e.g. a friend once told me I'm "both the kindest and most annoying person they know, which makes [me] one of the most likable [to them]." That says it all. The "kindest" part is a lying facade I've convinced myself of to the point of feeling the associated emotions, so that part can be rejected, leaving just "most annoying" - i.e. the actual reality peeking through. So, again, don't reassure me. I've heard it all from the few people I've told this to (including from a really excellent therapist for 10 years) - I WILL reject it, because you will be wrong. If any of it were valid, I would not have been repeatedly and consistently told the opposite in eight consecutive separate environments, nor would I have destroyed my family's health with my behaviour. There's only one explanation for that.

2023.03.30 07:25 Opening_Lab_6153 How to reduce the percentage error for dose values in voxels ?

Following is the output of DOSXYZnrc simulation. It says that "The dose values in 586822 voxels had error > 50% and have been zeroed in the .3ddose file". I want to know the reason for this error and how it can be reduced to acceptable limits ?

Also it says " *** Warning *** Used all particles from source file Restarting from first particle in file". What could be the reason for this and how it can be avoided. Can particle recycling be used in this case? If yes, how ?

2023.03.30 07:04 laafawnduh I need some advice with project planning and execution

So I am an IT major at a university and for one of my classes this semester the final project is a full on CS project. It’s a group project where we must use a framework, API, and library in order to create a web app. Everyone in my group is a little out of there element as we all have very little programming experience and the only two languages that have been taught in this course so far have been HTML and CSS. We are starting JavaScript next week. There are 6 weeks left in the semester and until this project is due. So, we have a lot of research and work ahead of us.
So far, we have decided our app is going to be a single page weather app.
Features we want to include:
We are planning on using Reactjs as our framework, Material-UI for our library, and OpenWeatherMap and ZenQuotes.io for our API’s
With our lack of knowledge about how API’s, frameworks, and library’s work, we kind of just picked them based on popularity which I know might end up potentially making us struggle more than helping us.
So the point of my post and where we need advice is really how do we start. We don’t know in what order to do things. We don’t have a project plan. We need some project mapping best practices. We don’t want to do a bunch of work and find out that it all needs to be changed because we started on it before something else. We have begun to read documentation and are figuring out the basis of each technology but we haven’t built or wrote anything yet. Everything seems very overwhelming. From our little research, it seems like a lot of how things are going to be built on the front end is based on what information we can get from the API’s and if we can figure out how to use it. Any pointers are welcome, any web app project planning references are welcome, any encouragement is welcome. I know we’re going to accomplish this project and we’re going to come out the other end much smarter than we are now, we just want to do it as efficient as possible.

Home
Observing the weather downtown today was pretty interesting. Particularly because when I rode my bike to work this morning, I was oblivious to rain being in the forecast today, thinking instead that our rainy days would begin again tomorrow 😆
Luckily the rain let up and I was able to enjoy that "just rained during spring near the harbor" aroma and it was incredible! As a Midwest native, I'm so greatful to live in a city with such vibrance. 3 years in and I still believe it was worth the move!
Oh, and I love ships & trains so...

2023.03.30 06:53 Funny-Brilliant-9915 I’m writing a Fan Fic can someone please give me some tips

Mercenary Midoriya By:
Tags: Midoriya Izuku, Midoriya Izuku & Class 1-A, Midoriya Izuku & Eraserhead, Sassy Midoriya Izuku, Midoriya Izuku Writes Fanfiction, Humor, Crack, Crack Treated Seriously, Class 1-A as Family Genius Midoriya Izuku, Hacker Midoriya Izuku, First Fan Fiction, I can’t tag
Topic: Deku is a commissioned fanfic writer, one day however he is caught red-handed writing an Eraserhead x Present Mic x Ms Joke smut in class.
Fan Fiction
To most, it is just an enjoyment, however to Izuku it is a getaway. An opportunity to express what you wanted without the fear of being chastised and judged.
He was only eleven when he stumbled upon his first fanfic on a Pre-Quirk website that was still being used called Archive Our Own. Present Mic x reader is what sent Midoriya down the wormhole. Izuku then found out that there were books about anything he could dream of: Limelight Heros, Rescue Heroes, and if he was lucky the odd Underground hero here or there.
As a kid with unrestricted internet access and not many friends, Midoriya often found himself conversing with strangers on the internet, sure he knew the dangers of the web. He knew that there were people that liked to take advantage of kids his age, ‘Predators’ as his mother called it. But that didn’t stop him from joining group chats and making new friends.
‘EndeavorsLittleFlame’ was the name of his first commissioner Izuku was twelve at the time. He had just got home from a long day at school. He quickly made his way to the bathroom to patch up the cuts and bruises he received throughout the day, it had become second nature at this point. Come home, take a shower, bandage cuts, apply aloe vera on his burns, ice his bruises, do homework, and then hop onto his computer to read and write fanfics. He never strayed from these steps until today. He opened up Discord and saw that he had one message from a user called EndeavorsLittleFlame.
EndeavorsLittleFlame 02/12/2235 2:02 PM Hello, I see that you are an Ao3 writer. I would like to know if you do commissions. If you do, how much would it cost for a Female All Might x Endeavor smut?
ColorlessEmerald 02/12/2235 4:17 PM I have not ever done commissions however, I can't decide on a price until I have an idea of what you want. Are there any specific tags that you would like me to include or exclude, how many chapters, etc?
EndeavorsLittleFlame 02/12/2235 4:25 PM I would prefer if it were a two-shot. Some tags I would want are Hate Sex, Enemies with Benefits, Hair Pulling, Choking, Semi-Public, Car Sex, Degrading, Overstimulation, Aftercare, Top Endeavour, and Bottom All Might. For the storyline the two pros are doing an interview together. After some one sided bickering Endeavour ends up taking All Might to his car and they fuck.
ColorlessEmerald 02/12/2235 4:27 PM I can charge you 10 dollars, and have it ready in 3 days. Are you ok with that price?
EndeavorsLittleFlame 02/12/2235 4:28 PM I’m okay with that price. Do you take Venmo?
ColorlessEmerald 02/12/2235 4:29 PM I do
EndeavorsLittleFlame 02/12/2235 4:30 PM Great so I’ll send you the money
EndeavorsLittleFlame 02/12/2235 4:35 PM I just sent it
ColorlessEmerald 02/12/2235 4:36 PM I received it, I’ll get started on the fic. Nice doing business with you.
EndeavorsLittleFlame 02/12/2235 4:36 PM Same to you!
Once word spread business was booming, Midoriya averaged about 3 stories a week. All writers new the name of Colorless Emerald

2023.03.30 06:53 Existing_Tart_6431 I (24F) am not sure how to handle my relationship with my abusive mom's (54F) side of the family

I'm copying my post from a different subreddit here as I wanted to get more input; hope that's ok!
I'll try to keep this as brief as possible, summary at the bottom but for full context:
Parents got divorced when I was 13 because of a whole slew of events that ended with my mom's arrest for domestic violence. I still had to see her very often because of the custody agreement (basically the judge pretty much ignored all of that history and didn't ask my opinion because I was under 14) which led to me becoming the main person dealing with her behavior for years. Even after I turned 18, I still kept in contact with her though because I was being nice.
Two years later I ended up going no-contact because she was harassing me constantly despite living hours away from where I went to school. I was 20 at the time so thankfully when this did happen, the people she reached out to were less believing of the things she said than strangers had been throughout my childhood. Still, I decided that was the end of my relationship with her. I moved even further away after graduation and while she did continue to attempt to talk to me and random people in my life, I was able to ignore it better.
I haven't seen her in person since she showed up uninvited to my graduation almost 4 years ago. I haven't interacted with her directly since then and she's only managed to contact me a handful of times to which I've just blocked her.
I have, however, kept a semblance of a relationship with my grandparents (her parents). It's been tough but they've mostly respected the boundaries I set because they want to have a relationship with me. The problem has always been there since day one that they will minimize my experiences and try to persuade me to forgive her.
I've had to reinforce my stance a few times over the years which I've absolutely hated doing but it was necessary to continue a low-contact relationship with them. Unfortunately, I think I'm at that point again and I'm not sure what to do or say.
I recently moved to the NYC area where I have some relatives on my mom's side. My relationship with everyone on that side is strained because I still resent them over 10 years later. I did visit them when I first moved and they were respectful but of course repeated the same thing my grandparents have- "I hope you're able to forgive hehave a relationship with your mother."
I last saw my grandparents in fall of 2019 when they visited me on their own. The visit was fine, I just did it to be nice but pretty much ever since, my grandma has been bugging me to visit them because she "doesn't see me enough."
Well, my mom's cousin is one of the ones who lives in the area up here. Her oldest son is turning 13 and they're throwing him a big bar mitzvah in June and the whole family is coming including my grandparents. So, of course, my grandma is now arranging all of these activities for us to do while they're here.
In talking to my grandma about this, she mentioned that, by the way, my mom will also be there. This was not something I was aware of previously and I was very frustrated when she explained to me how I should just be nice to my mom and not cause her to make a scene. I didn't know how to respond so I pretty much just said nothing and ended the call as quickly as possible without promising too much.
The next day my grandpa texted me the same usual diatribe about how upset it makes them to see me treat my mom this way and they don't want me to just forget about her. To them, all of the "issues" between her and me happened so long ago that I'm not being fair. They think it's been plenty of time and my mom has proved that she's doing her best (taking her medicine, going to therapy, etc.) so I should just stop being stubborn.
What they and also no one else in my family knows is how it's not some distant past to me and it never will be. They don't know the mental damage I've sustained because of my childhood. They don't know how even after years of treatment and isolating myself, I still deal with the thoughts that will never go away. I'll always have to fight with myself to remain a functional adult and that is her (my mom) fault.
I've never told them about my own mental illnesses (anorexia, depression, self-harm, ptsd) because I didn't think they deserved to know but now I wonder if that would make a difference in their sympathy. From their point of view, I probably seem overly stubborn so perhaps knowing the side effects of years of abuse more tangibly, they'd be more understanding?
I don't know specifically what to share with them or if I should even bother at all. They might always belittle my feelings on the matter so why even give them the benefit of knowing my personal struggles? Regardless, I'm now at a point where I need to do or say something with this event coming up.
Since talking a few weeks ago, my grandma has tried to reach out to me but I've just ignored her because I still don't know what to say. My instinct is to just say that I'll see them (just my grandparents) for one day while they're here but I won't be going to the actual bar mitzvah or any other events. But I also don't know that I even want to do that. I feel guilty that it's been so long and they might never see me again. They're coming up here so I might as well visit with them briefly but I worry that'll just make it worse.
I have no idea what the best thing to do is. I wish the problem would go away on its own but that's what I've been hoping would happen for the last several years and it never did. Clearly, I need to speak up for myself and make a firm decision but I don't know what that looks like.
I'd really appreciate any insights y'all have. What would you do/have you done in this situation? What should I say to them? It's really weighing on me and making everything a lot harder for me lately. Thanks in advance for any input!
TL;DR: I went no-contact with my mom almost 5 years ago but kept a low-contact relationship with my grandparents. Now they want me to come to a big family event in the area in June where my mom will be but I want nothing to do with her. I feel bad cutting them off completely but not sure how to move forward. What would you do?

2023.03.30 06:51 Smol-But-Fierce Embody vs Leap for person under 5 ft

I initially had a Zody chair at work and it didn’t work out for me. It’s lumbar and seat depth was too large for me. They sent me an Aeron Size A. The size fits ok, needed a footrest so that the back of the knees don’t dig into the chair seat (16 inch depth). But the mesh seat is too firm and hard. The arm rests don’t go down enough for my shoulder to relax.
Went to a HM showroom and they recommended me a Embody since it’s seat depth can go down to 15 inches. I tried the Logitech model for few mins and it felt supportive enough. What worries me is how the back support works for short folks over longer periods. There hasn’t been a Steelcase store around to check out the Leap or any similar chair. I am a little over 4’10”, 105 lb. I easily spend ~10 hours on this chair every day.
Any other options are also welcome recommended for super short folks like me!

2023.03.30 06:37 Choice-Bake7922 Add uranium to minecraft

Uranium is a chemical element with symbol U and atomic number 92. It is a silvery-grey metal in the actinide series of the periodic table. A uranium atom has 92 protons and 92 electrons, of which 6 are valence electrons. Uranium radioactively decays by emitting an alpha particle. The half-life of this decay varies between 159,200 and 4.5 billion years for different isotopes, making them useful for dating the age of the Earth. The most common isotopes in natural uranium are uranium-238 (which has 146 neutrons and accounts for over 99% of uranium on Earth) and uranium-235 (which has 143 neutrons). Uranium has the highest atomic weight of the primordially occurring elements. Its density is about 70% higher than that of lead, and slightly lower than that of gold or tungsten. It occurs naturally in low concentrations of a few parts per million in soil, rock and water, and is commercially extracted from uranium-bearing minerals such as uraninite.[6] Many contemporary uses of uranium exploit its unique nuclear properties. Uranium-235 is the only naturally occurring fissile isotope, which makes it widely used in nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons. However, because of the tiny concentrations found in nature, uranium needs to undergo enrichment so that enough uranium-235 is present. Uranium-238 is fissionable by fast neutrons, and is fertile, meaning it can be transmuted to fissile plutonium-239 in a nuclear reactor. Another fissile isotope, uranium-233, can be produced from natural thorium and is studied for future industrial use in nuclear technology. Uranium-238 has a small probability for spontaneous fission or even induced fission with fast neutrons; uranium-235, and to a lesser degree uranium-233, have a much higher fission cross-section for slow neutrons. In sufficient concentration, these isotopes maintain a sustained nuclear chain reaction. This generates the heat in nuclear power reactors, and produces the fissile material for nuclear weapons. Depleted uranium (238U) is used in kinetic energy penetrators and armor plating.[7][8]
The 1789 discovery of uranium in the mineral pitchblende is credited to Martin Heinrich Klaproth, who named the new element after the recently discovered planet Uranus. Eugène-Melchior Péligot was the first person to isolate the metal and its radioactive properties were discovered in 1896 by Henri Becquerel. Research by Otto Hahn, Lise Meitner, Enrico Fermi and others, such as J. Robert Oppenheimer starting in 1934 led to its use as a fuel in the nuclear power industry and in Little Boy, the first nuclear weapon used in war. An ensuing arms race during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union produced tens of thousands of nuclear weapons that used uranium metal and uranium-derived plutonium-239. Dismantling of these weapons and related nuclear facilities is carried out within various nuclear disarmament programs and costs billions of dollars. Weapon-grade uranium obtained from nuclear weapons is diluted with uranium-238 and reused as fuel for nuclear reactors. The development and deployment of these nuclear reactors continue on a global base as they are powerful sources of CO2-free energy. Spent nuclear fuel forms radioactive waste, which mostly consists of uranium-238 and poses significant health threat and environmental impact. Uranium is a silvery white, weakly radioactive metal. It has a Mohs hardness of 6, sufficient to scratch glass and approximately equal to that of titanium, rhodium, manganese and niobium. It is malleable, ductile, slightly paramagnetic, strongly electropositive and a poor electrical conductor.[9][10] Uranium metal has a very high density of 19.1 g/cm3,[11] denser than lead (11.3 g/cm3),[12] but slightly less dense than tungsten and gold (19.3 g/cm3).[13][14]
Uranium metal reacts with almost all non-metal elements (with the exception of the noble gases) and their compounds, with reactivity increasing with temperature.[15] Hydrochloric and nitric acids dissolve uranium, but non-oxidizing acids other than hydrochloric acid attack the element very slowly.[9] When finely divided, it can react with cold water; in air, uranium metal becomes coated with a dark layer of uranium oxide.[10] Uranium in ores is extracted chemically and converted into uranium dioxide or other chemical forms usable in industry.
Uranium-235 was the first isotope that was found to be fissile. Other naturally occurring isotopes are fissionable, but not fissile. On bombardment with slow neutrons, its uranium-235 isotope will most of the time divide into two smaller nuclei, releasing nuclear binding energy and more neutrons. If too many of these neutrons are absorbed by other uranium-235 nuclei, a nuclear chain reaction occurs that results in a burst of heat or (in special circumstances) an explosion. In a nuclear reactor, such a chain reaction is slowed and controlled by a neutron poison, absorbing some of the free neutrons. Such neutron absorbent materials are often part of reactor control rods (see nuclear reactor physics for a description of this process of reactor control).
As little as 15 lb (6.8 kg) of uranium-235 can be used to make an atomic bomb.[16] The nuclear weapon detonated over Hiroshima, called Little Boy, relied on uranium fission. However, the first nuclear bomb (the Gadget used at Trinity) and the bomb that was detonated over Nagasaki (Fat Man) were both plutonium bombs.
Uranium metal has three allotropic forms:[17]
α (orthorhombic) stable up to 668 °C (1,234 °F). Orthorhombic, space group No. 63, Cmcm, lattice parameters a = 285.4 pm, b = 587 pm, c = 495.5 pm.[18] β (tetragonal) stable from 668 to 775 °C (1,234 to 1,427 °F). Tetragonal, space group P42/mnm, P42nm, or P4n2, lattice parameters a = 565.6 pm, b = c = 1075.9 pm.[18] γ (body-centered cubic) from 775 °C (1,427 °F) to melting point—this is the most malleable and ductile state. Body-centered cubic, lattice parameter a = 352.4 pm.[18]
The major application of uranium in the military sector is in high-density penetrators. This ammunition consists of depleted uranium (DU) alloyed with 1–2% other elements, such as titanium or molybdenum.[19] At high impact speed, the density, hardness, and pyrophoricity of the projectile enable the destruction of heavily armored targets. Tank armor and other removable vehicle armor can also be hardened with depleted uranium plates. The use of depleted uranium became politically and environmentally contentious after the use of such munitions by the US, UK and other countries during wars in the Persian Gulf and the Balkans raised questions concerning uranium compounds left in the soil[8][20][21][22] (see Gulf War syndrome).[16]
Depleted uranium is also used as a shielding material in some containers used to store and transport radioactive materials. While the metal itself is radioactive, its high density makes it more effective than lead in halting radiation from strong sources such as radium.[9] Other uses of depleted uranium include counterweights for aircraft control surfaces, as ballast for missile re-entry vehicles and as a shielding material.[10] Due to its high density, this material is found in inertial guidance systems and in gyroscopic compasses.[10] Depleted uranium is preferred over similarly dense metals due to its ability to be easily machined and cast as well as its relatively low cost.[23] The main risk of exposure to depleted uranium is chemical poisoning by uranium oxide rather than radioactivity (uranium being only a weak alpha emitter).
During the later stages of World War II, the entire Cold War, and to a lesser extent afterwards, uranium-235 has been used as the fissile explosive material to produce nuclear weapons. Initially, two major types of fission bombs were built: a relatively simple device that uses uranium-235 and a more complicated mechanism that uses plutonium-239 derived from uranium-238. Later, a much more complicated and far more powerful type of fission/fusion bomb (thermonuclear weapon) was built, that uses a plutonium-based device to cause a mixture of tritium and deuterium to undergo nuclear fusion. Such bombs are jacketed in a non-fissile (unenriched) uranium case, and they derive more than half their power from the fission of this material by fast neutrons from the nuclear fusion process.[24]
The main use of uranium in the civilian sector is to fuel nuclear power plants. One kilogram of uranium-235 can theoretically produce about 20 terajoules of energy (2×1013 joules), assuming complete fission; as much energy as 1.5 million kilograms (1,500 tonnes) of coal.[7]
Commercial nuclear power plants use fuel that is typically enriched to around 3% uranium-235.[7] The CANDU and Magnox designs are the only commercial reactors capable of using unenriched uranium fuel. Fuel used for United States Navy reactors is typically highly enriched in uranium-235 (the exact values are classified). In a breeder reactor, uranium-238 can also be converted into plutonium through the following reaction:[10]
Before (and, occasionally, after) the discovery of radioactivity, uranium was primarily used in small amounts for yellow glass and pottery glazes, such as uranium glass and in Fiestaware.[25]
The discovery and isolation of radium in uranium ore (pitchblende) by Marie Curie sparked the development of uranium mining to extract the radium, which was used to make glow-in-the-dark paints for clock and aircraft dials.[26][27] This left a prodigious quantity of uranium as a waste product, since it takes three tonnes of uranium to extract one gram of radium. This waste product was diverted to the glazing industry, making uranium glazes very inexpensive and abundant. Besides the pottery glazes, uranium tile glazes accounted for the bulk of the use, including common bathroom and kitchen tiles which can be produced in green, yellow, mauve, black, blue, red and other colors.
Uranium was also used in photographic chemicals (especially uranium nitrate as a toner),[10] in lamp filaments for stage lighting bulbs,[28] to improve the appearance of dentures,[29] and in the leather and wood industries for stains and dyes. Uranium salts are mordants of silk or wool. Uranyl acetate and uranyl formate are used as electron-dense "stains" in transmission electron microscopy, to increase the contrast of biological specimens in ultrathin sections and in negative staining of viruses, isolated cell organelles and macromolecules.
The discovery of the radioactivity of uranium ushered in additional scientific and practical uses of the element. The long half-life of the isotope uranium-238 (4.47×109 years) makes it well-suited for use in estimating the age of the earliest igneous rocks and for other types of radiometric dating, including uranium–thorium dating, uranium–lead dating and uranium–uranium dating. Uranium metal is used for X-ray targets in the making of high-energy X-rays.[10]
The use of uranium in its natural oxide form dates back to at least the year 79 CE, when it was used in the Roman Empire to add a yellow color to ceramic glazes.[10] Yellow glass with 1% uranium oxide was found in a Roman villa on Cape Posillipo in the Bay of Naples, Italy, by R. T. Gunther of the University of Oxford in 1912.[30] Starting in the late Middle Ages, pitchblende was extracted from the Habsburg silver mines in Joachimsthal, Bohemia (now Jáchymov in the Czech Republic), and was used as a coloring agent in the local glassmaking industry.[31] In the early 19th century, the world's only known sources of uranium ore were these mines. Mining for uranium in the Ore Mountains ceased on the German side after the Cold War ended and SDAG Wismut was wound down. On the Czech side there were attempts during the uranium price bubble of 2007 to restart mining, but those were quickly abandoned following a fall in uranium prices.[32][33]
The discovery of the element is credited to the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth. While he was working in his experimental laboratory in Berlin in 1789, Klaproth was able to precipitate a yellow compound (likely sodium diuranate) by dissolving pitchblende in nitric acid and neutralizing the solution with sodium hydroxide.[31] Klaproth assumed the yellow substance was the oxide of a yet-undiscovered element and heated it with charcoal to obtain a black powder, which he thought was the newly discovered metal itself (in fact, that powder was an oxide of uranium).[31][34] He named the newly discovered element after the planet Uranus (named after the primordial Greek god of the sky), which had been discovered eight years earlier by William Herschel.[35]
In 1841, Eugène-Melchior Péligot, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (Central School of Arts and Manufactures) in Paris, isolated the first sample of uranium metal by heating uranium tetrachloride with potassium.[31][36]
Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity by using uranium in 1896.[15] Becquerel made the discovery in Paris by leaving a sample of a uranium salt, K2UO2(SO4)2 (potassium uranyl sulfate), on top of an unexposed photographic plate in a drawer and noting that the plate had become "fogged".[37] He determined that a form of invisible light or rays emitted by uranium had exposed the plate.
During World War I when the Central Powers suffered a shortage of molybdenum to make artillery gun barrels and high speed tool steels they routinely substituted ferrouranium alloys which present many of the same physical characteristics. When this practice became known in 1916 the USA government requested several prominent universities to research these uses for uranium and tools made with these formulas remained in use for several decades only ending when the Manhattan Project and the Cold War placed a large demand on uranium for fission research and weapon development.[38][39][40]
A team led by Enrico Fermi in 1934 observed that bombarding uranium with neutrons produces the emission of beta rays (electrons or positrons from the elements produced; see beta particle).[41] The fission products were at first mistaken for new elements with atomic numbers 93 and 94, which the Dean of the Faculty of Rome, Orso Mario Corbino, christened ausonium and hesperium, respectively.[42][43][44][45] The experiments leading to the discovery of uranium's ability to fission (break apart) into lighter elements and release binding energy were conducted by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann[41] in Hahn's laboratory in Berlin. Lise Meitner and her nephew, the physicist Otto Robert Frisch, published the physical explanation in February 1939 and named the process "nuclear fission".[46] Soon after, Fermi hypothesized that the fission of uranium might release enough neutrons to sustain a fission reaction. Confirmation of this hypothesis came in 1939, and later work found that on average about 2.5 neutrons are released by each fission of the rare uranium isotope uranium-235.[41] Fermi urged Alfred O. C. Nier to separate uranium isotopes for determination of the fissile component, and on 29 February 1940, Nier used an instrument he built at the University of Minnesota to separate the world's first uranium-235 sample in the Tate Laboratory. After mailed to Columbia University's cyclotron, John Dunning confirmed the sample to be the isolated fissile material on 1 March.[47] Further work found that the far more common uranium-238 isotope can be transmuted into plutonium, which, like uranium-235, is also fissile by thermal neutrons. These discoveries led numerous countries to begin working on the development of nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Despite fission having been discovered in Germany, the Uranverein ("uranium club") Germany's wartime project to research nuclear power and/or weapons was hampered by limited resources, infighting, the exile or non-involvement of several prominent scientists in the field and several crucial mistakes such as failing to account for impurities in available graphite samples which made it appear less suitable as a neutron moderator than it is in reality. Germany's attempts to build a natural uranium / heavy water reactor had not come close to reaching criticality by the time the Americans reached Haigerloch, the site of the last German wartime reactor experiment.[48]
On 2 December 1942, as part of the Manhattan Project, another team led by Enrico Fermi was able to initiate the first artificial self-sustained nuclear chain reaction, Chicago Pile-1. An initial plan using enriched uranium-235 was abandoned as it was as yet unavailable in sufficient quantities.[49] Working in a lab below the stands of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago, the team created the conditions needed for such a reaction by piling together 360 tonnes of graphite, 53 tonnes of uranium oxide, and 5.5 tonnes of uranium metal, a majority of which was supplied by Westinghouse Lamp Plant in a makeshift production process.[41][50]
Two major types of atomic bombs were developed by the United States during World War II: a uranium-based device (codenamed "Little Boy") whose fissile material was highly enriched uranium, and a plutonium-based device (see Trinity test and "Fat Man") whose plutonium was derived from uranium-238. The uranium-based Little Boy device became the first nuclear weapon used in war when it was detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Exploding with a yield equivalent to 12,500 tonnes of trinitrotoluene, the blast and thermal wave of the bomb destroyed nearly 50,000 buildings and killed approximately 75,000 people (see Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki).[37] Initially it was believed that uranium was relatively rare, and that nuclear proliferation could be avoided by simply buying up all known uranium stocks, but within a decade large deposits of it were discovered in many places around the world.[51][52]
The X-10 Graphite Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, formerly known as the Clinton Pile and X-10 Pile, was the world's second artificial nuclear reactor (after Enrico Fermi's Chicago Pile) and was the first reactor designed and built for continuous operation. Argonne National Laboratory's Experimental Breeder Reactor I, located at the Atomic Energy Commission's National Reactor Testing Station near Arco, Idaho, became the first nuclear reactor to create electricity on 20 December 1951.[53] Initially, four 150-watt light bulbs were lit by the reactor, but improvements eventually enabled it to power the whole facility (later, the town of Arco became the first in the world to have all its electricity come from nuclear power generated by BORAX-III, another reactor designed and operated by Argonne National Laboratory).[54][55] The world's first commercial scale nuclear power station, Obninsk in the Soviet Union, began generation with its reactor AM-1 on 27 June 1954. Other early nuclear power plants were Calder Hall in England, which began generation on 17 October 1956,[56] and the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Pennsylvania, which began on 26 May 1958. Nuclear power was used for the first time for propulsion by a submarine, the USS Nautilus, in 1954.[41][57]
Prehistoric naturally occurring fission Main article: Natural nuclear fission reactor In 1972, the French physicist Francis Perrin discovered fifteen ancient and no longer active natural nuclear fission reactors in three separate ore deposits at the Oklo mine in Gabon, West Africa, collectively known as the Oklo Fossil Reactors. The ore deposit is 1.7 billion years old; then, uranium-235 constituted about 3% of the total uranium on Earth.[58] This is high enough to permit a sustained nuclear fission chain reaction to occur, provided other supporting conditions exist. The capacity of the surrounding sediment to contain the health-threatening nuclear waste products has been cited by the U.S. federal government as supporting evidence for the feasibility to store spent nuclear fuel at the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.[58]
Above-ground nuclear tests by the Soviet Union and the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s and by France into the 1970s and 1980s[23] spread a significant amount of fallout from uranium daughter isotopes around the world.[59] Additional fallout and pollution occurred from several nuclear accidents.[60]
Uranium miners have a higher incidence of cancer. An excess risk of lung cancer among Navajo uranium miners, for example, has been documented and linked to their occupation.[61] The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, a 1990 law in the US, required $100,000 in "compassion payments" to uranium miners diagnosed with cancer or other respiratory ailments.[62]
During the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States, huge stockpiles of uranium were amassed and tens of thousands of nuclear weapons were created using enriched uranium and plutonium made from uranium. After the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, an estimated 600 short tons (540 metric tons) of highly enriched weapons grade uranium (enough to make 40,000 nuclear warheads) had been stored in often inadequately guarded facilities in the Russian Federation and several other former Soviet states.[16] Police in Asia, Europe, and South America on at least 16 occasions from 1993 to 2005 have intercepted shipments of smuggled bomb-grade uranium or plutonium, most of which was from ex-Soviet sources.[16] From 1993 to 2005 the Material Protection, Control, and Accounting Program, operated by the federal government of the United States, spent approximately US $550 million to help safeguard uranium and plutonium stockpiles in Russia. This money was used for improvements and security enhancements at research and storage facilities.[16]
Safety of nuclear facilities in Russia has been significantly improved since the stabilization of political and economical turmoil of the early 1990s. For example, in 1993 there were 29 incidents ranking above level 1 on the International Nuclear Event Scale, and this number dropped under four per year in 1995–2003. The number of employers receiving annual radiation doses above 20 mSv, which is equivalent to a single full-body CT scan,[63] saw a strong decline around 2000. In November 2015, the Russian government approved a federal program for nuclear and radiation safety for 2016 to 2030 with a budget of 562 billion rubles (ca. 8 billion dollars). Its key issue is "the deferred liabilities accumulated during the 70 years of the nuclear industry, particularly during the time of the Soviet Union". Approximately 73% of the budget will be spent on decommissioning aged and obsolete nuclear reactors and nuclear facilities, especially those involved in state defense programs; 20% will go in processing and disposal of nuclear fuel and radioactive waste, and 5% into monitoring and ensuring of nuclear and radiation safety.[64]
Along with all elements having atomic weights higher than that of iron, uranium is only naturally formed by the r-process (rapid neutron capture) in supernovae and neutron star mergers.[65] Primordial thorium and uranium are only produced in the r-process, because the s-process (slow neutron capture) is too slow and cannot pass the gap of instability after bismuth.[66][67] Besides the two extant primordial uranium isotopes, 235U and 238U, the r-process also produced significant quantities of 236U, which has a shorter half-life and so is an extinct radionuclide, having long since decayed completely to 232Th. Uranium-236 was itself enriched by the decay of 244Pu, accounting for the observed higher-than-expected abundance of thorium and lower-than-expected abundance of uranium.[68] While the natural abundance of uranium has been supplemented by the decay of extinct 242Pu (half-life 0.375 million years) and 247Cm (half-life 16 million years), producing 238U and 235U respectively, this occurred to an almost negligible extent due to the shorter half-lives of these parents and their lower production than 236U and 244Pu, the parents of thorium: the 247Cm:235U ratio at the formation of the Solar System was (7.0±1.6)×10−5.[69]
Uranium is a naturally occurring element that can be found in low levels within all rock, soil, and water. Uranium is the 51st element in order of abundance in the Earth's crust. Uranium is also the highest-numbered element to be found naturally in significant quantities on Earth and is almost always found combined with other elements.[10] The decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium-40 in the Earth's mantle is thought to be the main source of heat[70][71] that keeps the Earth's outer core in the liquid state and drives mantle convection, which in turn drives plate tectonics.
Uranium's average concentration in the Earth's crust is (depending on the reference) 2 to 4 parts per million,[9][23] or about 40 times as abundant as silver.[15] The Earth's crust from the surface to 25 km (15 mi) down is calculated to contain 1017 kg (2×1017 lb) of uranium while the oceans may contain 1013 kg (2×1013 lb).[9] The concentration of uranium in soil ranges from 0.7 to 11 parts per million (up to 15 parts per million in farmland soil due to use of phosphate fertilizers),[72] and its concentration in sea water is 3 parts per billion.[23]
Uranium is more plentiful than antimony, tin, cadmium, mercury, or silver, and it is about as abundant as arsenic or molybdenum.[10][23] Uranium is found in hundreds of minerals, including uraninite (the most common uranium ore), carnotite, autunite, uranophane, torbernite, and coffinite.[10] Significant concentrations of uranium occur in some substances such as phosphate rock deposits, and minerals such as lignite, and monazite sands in uranium-rich ores[10] (it is recovered commercially from sources with as little as 0.1% uranium[15]).
Some bacteria, such as Shewanella putrefaciens, Geobacter metallireducens and some strains of Burkholderia fungorum, use uranium for their growth and convert U(VI) to U(IV).[73][74] Recent research suggests that this pathway includes reduction of the soluble U(VI) via an intermediate U(V) pentavalent state.[75][76] Other organisms, such as the lichen Trapelia involuta or microorganisms such as the bacterium Citrobacter, can absorb concentrations of uranium that are up to 300 times the level of their environment.[77] Citrobacter species absorb uranyl ions when given glycerol phosphate (or other similar organic phosphates). After one day, one gram of bacteria can encrust themselves with nine grams of uranyl phosphate crystals; this creates the possibility that these organisms could be used in bioremediation to decontaminate uranium-polluted water.[31][78] The proteobacterium Geobacter has also been shown to bioremediate uranium in ground water.[79] The mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices increases uranium content in the roots of its symbiotic plant.[80]
In nature, uranium(VI) forms highly soluble carbonate complexes at alkaline pH. This leads to an increase in mobility and availability of uranium to groundwater and soil from nuclear wastes which leads to health hazards. However, it is difficult to precipitate uranium as phosphate in the presence of excess carbonate at alkaline pH. A Sphingomonas sp. strain BSAR-1 has been found to express a high activity alkaline phosphatase (PhoK) that has been applied for bioprecipitation of uranium as uranyl phosphate species from alkaline solutions. The precipitation ability was enhanced by overexpressing PhoK protein in E. coli.[81]
Plants absorb some uranium from soil. Dry weight concentrations of uranium in plants range from 5 to 60 parts per billion, and ash from burnt wood can have concentrations up to 4 parts per million.[31] Dry weight concentrations of uranium in food plants are typically lower with one to two micrograms per day ingested through the food people eat.[31]
Production and mining Main article: Uranium mining Worldwide production of uranium in 2021 amounted to 48,332 tonnes, of which 21,819 t (45%) was mined in Kazakhstan. Other important urmom mining countries are Namibia (5,753 t), Canada (4,693 t), Australia (4,192 t), Uzbekistan (3,500 t), and Russia (2,635 t).[82]
Uranium ore is mined in several ways: by open pit, underground, in-situ leaching, and borehole mining (see uranium mining).[7] Low-grade uranium ore mined typically contains 0.01 to 0.25% uranium oxides. Extensive measures must be employed to extract the metal from its ore.[83] High-grade ores found in Athabasca Basin deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada can contain up to 23% uranium oxides on average.[84] Uranium ore is crushed and rendered into a fine powder and then leached with either an acid or alkali. The leachate is subjected to one of several sequences of precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. The resulting mixture, called yellowcake, contains at least 75% uranium oxides U3O8. Yellowcake is then calcined to remove impurities from the milling process before refining and conversion.[85]
Commercial-grade uranium can be produced through the reduction of uranium halides with alkali or alkaline earth metals.[10] Uranium metal can also be prepared through electrolysis of KUF 5 or UF 4, dissolved in molten calcium chloride (CaCl 2) and sodium chloride (NaCl) solution.[10] Very pure uranium is produced through the thermal decomposition of uranium halides on a hot filament.[10]
It is estimated that 6.1 million tonnes of uranium exists in ore reserves that are economically viable at US$130 per kg of uranium,[87] while 35 million tonnes are classed as mineral resources (reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction).[88]
Australia has 28% of the world's known uranium ore reserves[87] and the world's largest single uranium deposit is located at the Olympic Dam Mine in South Australia.[89] There is a significant reserve of uranium in Bakouma, a sub-prefecture in the prefecture of Mbomou in the Central African Republic.[90]
Some uranium also originates from dismantled nuclear weapons.[91] For example, in 1993–2013 Russia supplied the United States with 15,000 tonnes of low-enriched uranium within the Megatons to Megawatts Program.[92]
An additional 4.6 billion tonnes of uranium are estimated to be dissolved in sea water (Japanese scientists in the 1980s showed that extraction of uranium from sea water using ion exchangers was technically feasible).[93][94] There have been experiments to extract uranium from sea water,[95] but the yield has been low due to the carbonate present in the water. In 2012, ORNL researchers announced the successful development of a new absorbent material dubbed HiCap which performs surface retention of solid or gas molecules, atoms or ions and also effectively removes toxic metals from water, according to results verified by researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.[96][97]
In 2005, ten countries accounted for the majority of the world's concentrated uranium oxides: Canada (27.9%), Australia (22.8%), Kazakhstan (10.5%), Russia (8.0%), Namibia (7.5%), Niger (7.4%), Uzbekistan (5.5%), the United States (2.5%), Argentina (2.1%) and Ukraine (1.9%).[99] In 2008 Kazakhstan was forecast to increase production and become the world's largest supplier of uranium by 2009.[100][101] The prediction came true, and Kazakhstan does dominate the world's uranium market since 2010. In 2021, its share was 45.1%, followed by Namibia (11.9%), Canada (9.7%), Australia (8.7%), Uzbekistan (7.2%), Niger (4.7%), Russia (5.5%), China (3.9%), India (1.3%), Ukraine (0.9%), and South Africa (0.8%), with a world total production of 48,332 tonnes.[82] Most of uranium was produced not by conventional underground mining of ores (29% of production), but by in situ leaching (66%).[82][102]
In the late 1960s, UN geologists also discovered major uranium deposits and other rare mineral reserves in Somalia. The find was the largest of its kind, with industry experts estimating the deposits at over 25% of the world's then known uranium reserves of 800,000 tons.[103]
The ultimate available supply is believed to be sufficient for at least the next 85 years,[88] although some studies indicate underinvestment in the late twentieth century may produce supply problems in the 21st century.[104] Uranium deposits seem to be log-normal distributed. There is a 300-fold increase in the amount of uranium recoverable for each tenfold decrease in ore grade.[105] In other words, there is little high grade ore and proportionately much more low grade ore available.
Calcined uranium yellowcake, as produced in many large mills, contains a distribution of uranium oxidation species in various forms ranging from most oxidized to least oxidized. Particles with short residence times in a calciner will generally be less oxidized than those with long retention times or particles recovered in the stack scrubber. Uranium content is usually referenced to U 3O 8, which dates to the days of the Manhattan Project when U 3O 8 was used as an analytical chemistry reporting standard.[106]
Phase relationships in the uranium-oxygen system are complex. The most important oxidation states of uranium are uranium(IV) and uranium(VI), and their two corresponding oxides are, respectively, uranium dioxide (UO 2) and uranium trioxide (UO 3).[107] Other uranium oxides such as uranium monoxide (UO), diuranium pentoxide (U 2O 5), and uranium peroxide (UO 4·2H 2O) also exist.
The most common forms of uranium oxide are triuranium octoxide (U 3O 8) and UO 2.[108] Both oxide forms are solids that have low solubility in water and are relatively stable over a wide range of environmental conditions. Triuranium octoxide is (depending on conditions) the most stable compound of uranium and is the form most commonly found in nature. Uranium dioxide is the form in which uranium is most commonly used as a nuclear reactor fuel.[108] At ambient temperatures, UO 2 will gradually convert to U 3O 8. Because of their stability, uranium oxides are generally considered the preferred chemical form for storage or disposal.[108]
Salts of many oxidation states of uranium are water-soluble and may be studied in aqueous solutions. The most common ionic forms are U3+ (brown-red), U4+ (green), UO+ 2 (unstable), and UO2+ 2 (yellow), for U(III), U(IV), U(V), and U(VI), respectively.[109] A few solid and semi-metallic compounds such as UO and US exist for the formal oxidation state uranium(II), but no simple ions are known to exist in solution for that state. Ions of U3+ liberate hydrogen from water and are therefore considered to be highly unstable. The UO2+ 2 ion represents the uranium(VI) state and is known to form compounds such as uranyl carbonate, uranyl chloride and uranyl sulfate. UO2+ 2 also forms complexes with various organic chelating agents, the most commonly encountered of which is uranyl acetate.[109]
Unlike the uranyl salts of uranium and polyatomic ion uranium-oxide cationic forms, the uranates, salts containing a polyatomic uranium-oxide anion, are generally not water-soluble.
Carbonates The interactions of carbonate anions with uranium(VI) cause the Pourbaix diagram to change greatly when the medium is changed from water to a carbonate containing solution. While the vast majority of carbonates are insoluble in water (students are often taught that all carbonates other than those of alkali metals are insoluble in water), uranium carbonates are often soluble in water. This is because a U(VI) cation is able to bind two terminal oxides and three or more carbonates to form anionic complexes.
Effects of pH The uranium fraction diagrams in the presence of carbonate illustrate this further: when the pH of a uranium(VI) solution increases, the uranium is converted to a hydrated uranium oxide hydroxide and at high pHs it becomes an anionic hydroxide complex.
When carbonate is added, uranium is converted to a series of carbonate complexes if the pH is increased. One effect of these reactions is increased solubility of uranium in the pH range 6 to 8, a fact that has a direct bearing on the long term stability of spent uranium dioxide nuclear fuels.
Hydrides, carbides and nitrides Uranium metal heated to 250 to 300 °C (482 to 572 °F) reacts with hydrogen to form uranium hydride. Even higher temperatures will reversibly remove the hydrogen. This property makes uranium hydrides convenient starting materials to create reactive uranium powder along with various uranium carbide, nitride, and halide compounds.[111] Two crystal modifications of uranium hydride exist: an α form that is obtained at low temperatures and a β form that is created when the formation temperature is above 250 °C.[111]
Uranium carbides and uranium nitrides are both relatively inert semimetallic compounds that are minimally soluble in acids, react with water, and can ignite in air to form U 3O 8.[111] Carbides of uranium include uranium monocarbide (UC), uranium dicarbide (UC 2), and diuranium tricarbide (U 2C 3). Both UC and UC 2 are formed by adding carbon to molten uranium or by exposing the metal to carbon monoxide at high temperatures. Stable below 1800 °C, U 2C 3 is prepared by subjecting a heated mixture of UC and UC 2 to mechanical stress.[112] Uranium nitrides obtained by direct exposure of the metal to nitrogen include uranium mononitride (UN), uranium dinitride (UN 2), and diuranium trinitride (U 2N 3).[112]

2023.03.30 06:28 TheDollarstoreDoctor My period has lasted nearly a month. I have a drs appt on April 4th, so should I be more concerned or just wait till then?

Current concern: I'm 5'2, 107 lb, 24 yr old woman. My period started March 2nd. I patiently waited for it to end. It has not. I did a virtual visit last week (I have Anthem so their Sydney app has on demand virtual visits) and asked how concerned I should be. They said the main concern was anemia and I should follow up with my primary for testing (soonest appt I could get is april 4th). Which I expected, I have a history of anemia, but it's not like anyone ever died from it, so I figured it could wait until my gyno appt in May (soonest available) as it seemed like it would be ending in the next day or two. That is until this week, it would quickly fluctuate between light and heavy. So I would wake up thinking yay! Seems like itll end today! Only a few drops of dried dark/old blood! Then, like today, I would change my pad before lunch and have to again before clocking in because so much new blood would come out at once. Then it would be light old blood again. And when I just changed it, a lot of new blood again, when I wipe the tissue would be full of very wet bright red blood. I havent been having terrible cramps, but I've been feeling so sore, especially my legs. I've also been a lot more lightheaded and shaking/tremors a lot, some episodes of feeling feverish, and bruising easier (I have a huge one on my leg from an unknown cause). Even my coworkers have been expressing a lot of concern over how exhausted/"sickly" I look (very small dept of all woman - so yes, period talk happens lol) and insisting that I need to go to the doctor as soon as possible, even if I have to beg and plead. But I'm just genuinely at a loss of what I should do, or even feel about this situation. Like, I'm starting to get concerned but I feel like theres not much I can do about it anyway. I mean, is it really an emergency? I cant expect my drs to cancel other peoples appts just to make availability for me. They cant just force my period to stop anyway. I was on steroids for my eczema at the beginning of this month but after my period started (2 week round of 10 mg), so maybe that can be a cause of the heaviness, but at the same time my period has been like this once before (they can be a bit long, but usually not this heavy).
Prior history: . I have had irregular periods since they started when I was 14. They would be super heavy, but that's about it. I'd get cramps but not terrible (but may be my pain tolerance - how high it is will be relevant in a bit). So I was put on birth control, and that seemed to lighten them but not regulate them.
My periods would either skip for months, or last a very long time, or the occasional normal period. Theres really no consistency. But I would say the average length could be 2 weeks, a few days of heavy bleeding followed by on/off light bleeding. 4 years ago, after many "unremarkable" pap smears ultrasounds & lab work (complete work up including thyroid and whatever else they could possibly think of - my gyno was really trying to figure this shit out cuz it had him stumped and ig he was the kind of person who didnt like to feel defeat since every other dr I've seen waves the flag of defeat immediately), my gyno finally decided "ok I need to see what the hell could possibly be causing this with my own two eyes" and I had an endoscopic laparoscopy done. Nothing was found. Except for my appendix, which was so infected the pus was practically crusted over it causing it to fuse to my colon. I was told it mustve been like that for atleast a year. And they were correct, I remember the day because I was on vacation. I had such intense internal pain that I had to hunch over while walking. I remember thinking "oh my god it feels like something in me burst. Should I go to the ER? No they'll just shrug it off as period pain. Even though I'm not on my period. And then I'll get a huge bill over going there for nothing" and so I just kinda powered through it. Anyway, removal of the appendix didnt change any of my period symptoms. So even those findings were "unremarkable", atleast in the reproductive department. So my gyno had no clue where to go from there. He tried everything, and the results are my body just loves to bleed for longer than it should for no reason at all. I should also note I no longer see this gyno as I now live thousands of miles away.

2023.03.30 06:24 mister_alma_raynard Today is.....

........My bday!
Sorry, ik people hate these types of posts. But this is kinda like a rant or a story time let's say!
Don't gotta wish me btw :) . Ur wish
So imma tell y'all how my bdays went from 2019 onwards.
2k19: Just before my bday in 2019 I made a promise to myself that i wont care about my bday, not ask a gift, not ask for clothes etc. However I failed and ended up asking for a advance bday gift on February itself lol. Made my dad bought me a MI band 3.sadly, this was my worst bday ever! My parents were arguing alot that day. I don't remember why. But i do remember eating lunch at 4 30 pm that day. My mom was angry asf and told me enjoy with my dad. I was sad the whole day. But hey, I was a little kid, I chear up easily by watching yt.
2k20: this was the year where I lost a bit of enthusiasm for birthdays. Maybe coz of the previous year. But i did have certain expectations from my parents. I planned months earlier to ask my dad to buy a game caset for my ps4. This was the time where I used to overthink. I feared rejection from dad. So i decided do all research about where I can get the game for cheap. Almost thought of buying it second hand. It also took about 5 days for me to gather courage and ask my dad. I asked him 2days before my bday and he was like "ok, place it in the cart". I was like " That was easy". It costed 105 SAR along with delivery charge(ABOUT 2100 RUPEES). It arrived 4 days after my bday. Also on my bday my parents gave me the biggest surprise. They bought me a phone (≡≡). Also they bought a huge cake for me. Best bday!
2k21: This year I was stuck in India for about 9 months. And on my bday I was at my mom side family house. My dad was away. both my uncles bought me a cake and decorated the Hall with bday decorations. This time i actually did not ask for anything from my dad. However he asked whether I wanted something like about 10 times indirectly and directly. If any relative or friend asked what my parents gifted me, I would say I got a book. However 2 months later I made my dad but me the first percy Jackson book. So I pretty much considered that as a gift. Decent bday ig.
2k22: Before I start. Can we agree that at one point of a person's life they become an independent thinker, can analyse shit , even understand what is wrong and right and also think beyond. Yep that was me
It had suddenly occurred to me that one's bday should nt really be dedicated to them, but to their parents! Why should we gift the bday boy or girl? Why not the parents? Esp the mother! I made a oath to myself that when I get a job imma gift my mom and dad gifts instead and take them out on dinner! Call it cringe, idc. Although I had certain expections this year like the previous two years. I Decided to be quiet this year and ye, that's what happened. My dad asked whether I wanted cake or anything at all. Remembering my philosophy, I felt guilty to ask anything, I felt I don't deserve anything. So I denied cake, dress etc. So ye very empty bday. But I badly wanted to thank my parents. But I could never bring myself to say thank you.
2k23: hey that's today. And I lost 100% enthusiasm towards my bday. In fact today I don't even consider it as my bday, but instead the release day of my favourite actor's movie. I badly wanna watch the movie fdfs but meh. As of now I am in a car heading to tirupathi. Today morning my aunt and cousin sis surprised me with a cake. And I am very thankful. Even today I could never thank my parents ಥ_ಥ. But I stick to my plan of dedicating my bday to my loving parents
Thanks for reading! Even if you skipped to the end, thanks, TC!

2023.03.30 06:13 Difficult_Formal_652 66M, diplopia following vitrectomy, 7 weeks post op.

Hi everyone, looking for some advice here. Thank you in advance!
Caucasian, no existing or prior medical issues, no meds, US based. Vitrectomy surgery necessary due to extreme floaters interfering with my vision.
9 weeks ago I had a Left eye vitrectomy with no issues. Two weeks later I had the Right eye vitrectomy and have since experienced lots of issues. Right eye surgery resulted in far more swelling around the eye post op and even a black eye that lasted a week. Block administered during right eye surgery left my entire scalp and forehead numb for 24 hours (which did not occur with the left eye). Bleeding inside eye caused blindness for roughly 10 days. Once this cleared up and I could see out of the right eye I realized I had severe alignment issues. The vitrectomy surgeon said it was a result of the block but offered no guidance and suggested that I google a Pediatric Ophthalmologist for treatment of the alignment issue he characterized as diplopia. My vision is ok from left of center and to the left but doubles up badly just left of center and to the right with images from each eye severely separated. It appears to be getting worse with double vision moving farther to the left.
Looking for advice, options etc. this is dramatically impacting my ability to function normally. I’m considering prism glasses or even possibly an MRI to see what is really going on.

2023.03.30 05:58 keletr14 Should I see a lawyer or accept money offered by Insurance company after a car wreck?

I was rear ended 2 days ago. (Location: South Carolina) I have never been in any sort of a collision, ever. the person admitted fault and immediately started a claim on their phone. I have already been contacted by their insurance company.
I was hit in a car pool line while wearing my seatbelt at an elementary school while I had been stopped for 15-30 seconds. My 5 year old unbuckled herself, and got her backpack on and was about to get out. I had my neck slightly turned looking at her and then we were hit. My daughter was pushed forward and then fell back into the seat and hit her head.
The speed limit is 10 MPH in the car pool line. There was very little traffic at this time and the person who hit me was able to drive in from the main entrance of the school to the front of the carpool line without having a reason to stop (like stopped cars in front of her) up until the front where drop off is. I don’t know what speed she was going but she was absolutely not going anywhere near 10. And it was uphill. Everyone that has seen my car has estimated she was probably going between 25-35 and is absolutely shocked at the amount of damaged that occurred in a car line.
I do have a front dash camera that recorded the accident and you can tell I was hit pretty hard and my car was pushed toward about 10 feet (uphill, with my foot on the break If that matters). The other driver Told me at different points they had no idea what happened, then they said they were turned around handing their child their bookbag, and then later said they accidentally hit the gas instead of the breaks.
My car is significantly more damaged than hers is. I wouldn’t say it’s severe damage but it’s significant. No one from the insurance company has seen it yet. My bumper is caved in and my trunk/back hatch is crinkled, cracked, and uneven (my car is an SUV) her car was larger than mine and the front bumper is slightly popped off and was cut across like a foot. No one’s Airbags went off and the cars are still drivable.
Instantly after being hit my head and neck started hurting. We waited for a police report and I got one. I immediately took both of my children to their doctor. My oldest (5) who was standing up getting their backpack on was complaining about a headache. The doctor said one pupil was slightly larger than the other and that we needed to keep an eye on it and immediately bring her to the ER if there was any other concerning behavior. Another doctor was called in for a second opinion and also agreed the pupils were not the same size. My daughter has a bump on her head where she hit. The area around her eye is now bruised a little bit. (I did take photos). The pediatrician said my 2 year old seemed normal. I then went to urgent care. They said my neck was inflamed and sprained. The diagnosis sheet said I had acute back pain and to follow up in 2 weeks. I was prescribed 2 things (I don’t remember what at the moment) and I picked them up same day from the pharmacy.
I am in a lot of pain still. Even with cream, heating pad, and prescription medicine. My neck hurts, my shoulders hurt, my back hurts bad, my knees hurt, under my arms hurt, my tailbone hurts and my ears are ringing off and on.
The person at fault insurance company (USAA) called me today. They offered me $7,000 total for injury ($2500 for me, $2500 for my child that was injured, $1500 for my child that doesn’t seem to be injured, and $500 as a “buffer”). I am a little concerned because I was told that the buffer money could be used if I was contacted with extra bills from medical Insurance, but that I shouldn’t be. I said I wasn’t ready to make a decision at the moment. She asked me if I had a different amount in mind. I said I wasn’t ready to discuss that. She also offered to give me the money and pay for any additional medial treatment we needed in the future. I still stated I wasn’t ready to make a decision and she is planning on calling me back next week.
I am having multiple family members and friends tell me I need to at least see a lawyer for a free consult. I do think I am planning on doing that. Other family members and friends are telling me I should counter a little higher and not risk wasting a bunch of time for only a little more $, which is the only reason I am reluctant. I don’t plan on signing anything until I’m 100% sure we are all ok long term. Nothing at all has been done besides an auto body shop is supposed to call me to set up an appointment to get my car in. Thank you in advance for any advice.
I am absolutely horrified thinking about how this could’ve ended if the person had hit me 30-45 seconds later when my kid would’ve been getting out of the car.

2023.03.30 05:37 SandWhale88 Vis Potentia - Chapter 1 Episode 2

[p]:Previous

[Previous] [p] [Next] [n]
[One week later - One week old]
This is not happening. It must be some kind of reaction to my mind while in the vis state. I never looked into the effects on the mind for prolonged exposure to the vis state. I am sure this is all a bad dream.
[One month later - One month old]
I am trapped. This body is weak. My arch nemesis is, as the one my “mother” has dubbed, blankie. She wraps me in a cocoon of polyester and wool. My wrath will rain upon these people. I will destroy blankie. I will get back to my old self! I hate this!!
[One year later - One years old]
I have learned more about the current situation in the world from the adults talking. If I have been thrust forward in time, it is from me underestimating my own ability or Albian doing something. I do not know which I prefer to be the truth. I still hope this is a bad dream.
I have not seen anything to prove a time change. Technology seems to be similar to what I knew from 2020. No one seems to own phones though. It appears glasses or some form of contacts fill the role of a cell phone. I study every chance I get, unfortunately my “family” seems to be some kind of royalty and do not watch TV often.
I will learn something from this place that does not exist and is totally made up in my own mind.
[Two years later - Three years old]
A cold, dark reality has set in. If this is a dream, it is too real. I have started to walk and string together words. Dreams do not have this much realism. I can’t even defecate of my own accord. I, Liam Von Viea “The Great”, am useless. A failure with a poopy diaper.
[Three years later - Four years old]
I have come to enjoy the company of my family, I can’t believe I am saying it. From the children's stories I have been told, I have determined I have moved forward in time. It is a surreal feeling to listen to stories of my past self. Even though they are filled with inaccuracies, I am flattered.
My hair has grown out and it is half black and half blonde. Testing was inconclusive and was determined by melanin was influenced by my vis. It is illegal or unethical to test vis and abilities on children under six due to the “dangers” involved. The people of this time are weak. I would have gone through with the testing if I was not considered a minor. Damned body.
Biohacking was just starting to become a thing back in 2020 if I remember. Using testing and readings to estimate ability or bio-age. It has been taken to an extreme now. According to my father, who I have found out is a mid-ranking adventurer, once I get my contact implants and fully tested the rest of my life will be planned out.
It seems vis strength and power rule the world now. Poor souls. At times I do not know if I want to go back to my old life now. Haha! It is probably not even possible anyway. I have already drafted plans in my diary. Of course, the notes are illegible to anyone but me. One of the good things about this body.
My mother has set up a “play date”. I have spent most of these listening to adult gossip, my only way to learn about the world. From the sounds of this one though, Mother and Father will be in a closed meeting. I will have to interact with the other children. I do not mind most of the time. Since I am here I will need friends and allies for my future plans, retirement and an easy life!
However, we will be going to the local Lords estate. Lord Warrin. Lord Warrin is fathers boss, at least that's how I see it. He is kind of like the Governor of the state and my father is the Mayor.
I have not been to Lord Warrin’s estate, but I have had the unfortunate opportunity to meet his devil of a child. Julian Warrin. His red hair beaming with confidence and pride. All steaming from his father. I doubt he knows what hard work is. Last time we met he called me “Halfy” because of my hair… the nerve!
“Liam! Why aren’t you ready?!” Mother whipped.
“My lady, he refuses to get up.” Cidny, a young maid working for our estate said with a tired look.
“Liam, get up now or I will delay your contact implantation!!” Mother yelled. She knew that would get me going. I swear she must have some psynotic vis in her.
“Fine.” I huffed as Cidny began brushing my hair.
I got up and finished getting dressed. I am unable to do anything until I get my implants. Computers are no longer used commercially, for me to access the internet the implants are a must. I have gone to the public library a few times, but so much is age restricted! Why is vis taboo until six? I think I will never understand.
I would be lying if I said I was a little excited to take the train. I was ecstatic. Maybe it was the child in me or maybe it was the fact that trains are powered by vis. It doesn’t matter, it is cool and I want pictures!
I have not told anyone and have kept it a secret that I can control vis already. Apparently it is unheard for my age. I will keep this secret, after all I am almost six. Like hell I will let the CIA or whatever organization they have now take me away and test me like a lab rat. I hate those CIA guys.
I took many pictures of the train. I was told by one of the train employees that the train pulls in vis and uses it to run the engine. It only takes in what it needs. I wonder if vis is a renewable resource? I would not like to hear a train is taking my power.
To call the Warrin estate grand would be doing it a disservice. Through only gossip I know it is famous for its garden and welcoming environment. I am interested to see it, only because I have heard so much of it.
“Liam. This is Godfrey, he will take you to the other kids. Play nice and be safe.” Mothers stern eyes told me she meant business.
“Yes Ma'am!!” I raised my arm in a sarcastic salute.
“Young master, you might want to work on that salute. Come this way.” Godfrey smirked.
I can tell Godfrey is a meticulous man. His black suit is free of any blemishes or wrinkles. Every step he takes is planned. Even his glasses had no dust or smudges on them, an impossible feat.
“Sir, Mr. Butler Godfrey, what is your job here? Salute corrector?” I said with a childish chuckle. One thing I have enjoyed about my youth is getting away with little quips!
“Young master, I correct many things. Shall I make your attitude next on the list?”
Godfrey did not look down. I still felt eye contact. It sent a shiver down my spine. No one has made me feel this way in a long time. Excluding what I have started to call “the years lost”, it has to have been more than 10 years.
I better not pry into this man.
“Ok Sir Mr. Butler Godfrey” I smiled.
“Just Sir.”
I felt my spine shiver again.
“Sir” I whimpered. My body is scared of this man. He is stronger than me.
We approached a garden area. A group of three kids were waiting under a pagoda. Turning a calm relaxing scene into complete and utter chaos. I knew that devil Julian, the other two I had not met before.
“Young masters, this is Liam Reznor, first son of Lord Reznor. Get along and play nice. I am watching. Even when you think I am not.” Godfrey said in a cold dark voice.
There goes my spine again… damned thing.
Who’s idea was to make this guy our chaperon. Why couldn’t one of the maids take care of us?
“Hey Halfy! Long time no see!” Julian's smile was the inverse of my frown. His red hair neatly kept and black fitted suit matched his commanding presence. When older, he would be powerful.
“Julian I…” I was grabbed and brought in close to Julian.
“I don’t like Godfrey. Me and my friends here plan to ditch him like always. Follow along, Halfy.” Julian whispered.
While I did not like the way he spoke to me, I agree with getting away from Godfrey. Just knowing he is around is uncomfortable. I swear he wants to murder everyone not named Godfrey. I can’t believe I agree with Julian. Today is not my day.
“Ok, what next?” my eyes rushed around nervously.
“We run!”
Julian threw a gray ball into the air. I darted in the direction Julian ran in. Dark Grey smoke appeared above us.
“You little.. Young master, where did you get a smoke shell?!” Godfrey coughed.
“I do NOT get paid for this!” I could not imagine this man losing his cool like this. I might regret this choice later… but I was enjoying it. Even in my prime a primitive smoke shell could cause me issues. Not only did it block vision and smell, it acts as an emulsifier. It mixes all vis in an area making tracking and identifying a target impossible. Not a cheap toy a kid should have.
Keeping up with Julian and his little entourage was easier than I thought it would be. I have not been exercising like I want. Muscle production at my age is detrimental to my long term gains. I am not in any kind of routine, but I pick things up and put them down at times. When I am six I will start a vis and muscle building routine. One created by “The Great” Liam Von Viea of course.
“Julian, where are we going?” One of the boys, Grigor Chernin, asked. He is large for his age, in a gray suit with black hair. He was squinting as he asked. He was using more power than necessary for the question.
At least I was not the only one out of the loop on this.
“There! Grigor. I told you about it, remember?” Julian boasted.
“You can’t be serious…” the girl said. I think her name is Olivia. Her purple hair stood out to me. Perhaps vis was the cause of this unusual color.
I looked at where Julian was pointing. A cave. More accurately a dungeon. Was this little shit about to take a bunch of children into a dungeon? He is mad!
“Relax, it is an F level dungeon for training the servants. To build up vis resistance. I have been in like a billion times.” Julian smirked as he pulled out his training sword.
The other two pulled out training swords as well. So I was the one out of the loop… with no weapon. This could be a chance to test my vis resistance I guess.
“Hey, Halfy! Catch!” Grigor threw a stick towards me. “Use this!”
“This?” I looked down at a stick, well no not a stick. A twig.
When I looked up. They had entered the dungeon. I had done this countless times in the past. The pale blue and white swirls brought back memories. Why was I anxious? Maybe the twig or the fact I had not really used my vis in the body?
My spine shivered. I forgot about him…I took a breath and jumped into the dungeon.

2023.03.30 05:23 kshadows12 Can I sue a neighbor for negligence?

Long story short, my neighbor's dead tree fell on my house on Saturday. Both neighbors from the other side of me have since informed me that they've both spoken to him on separate occasions, asking him to remove several dead/damaged trees that are putting property at risk and he has refused.
The tree caused significant damage to my home and absoluely destroyed my 10 year old daughter's bedroom. By a miracle, she wasn't home over the weekend because she would have been killed- roof supports and chunks of ceiling are impaled into her pillow and litter her bed. I am still horrified at the thought. I am having to put her in counseling to cope with her losses (everything in her room was destroyed by either the tree or the rain that came in following.
To top it off, the tree company who removed the tree told us that they've done work for this particular neighbor in the past (in his yard) and has pointed out this tree in particular and recommended it be taken down before it fell on my house and he said he wasn't worried about it. I am disgusted.
The insurance adjuster comes out tomorrow to assess the damage, but my question is, beyond the insurance coverage to repair the house, could I have a civil case to sue the neighbor? I've never met him, just heard he's unpleasant and uncaring. Most of the neighborhood stopped by the day it happened to make sure everyone was ok, this neighbor made no contact at all.
I am a struggling single mother and I am suffering with anxiety over my first ever home (that I just bought a little over a year ago) being so thoroughly damaged, and the fact that I could have literally lost my daughter due to a stranger's carelessness. There are several other trees on his property that are dead or dying, and are in the same position to fall onto my house. I don't even feel safe at home, and wind now gives me horrific anxiety.
Do I have any grounds to sue? Can I sue to get him to take down the remaining trees? To recoup the cost of counseling? Anything?

2023.03.30 05:19 swimweightjourney 17 years swimmer 6ft 135 pounds

Hey everyone. As the title says, I’m a 17 year old swimmer right around 135 pounds and 6ft tall. I swim 2 hours a day (around 5000 yards) and would like to gain muscle for my senior year. I would love to get into swimming, but this is for gaining weight. In around a year i gained 10 pounds of muscle to my frame, and it does make a big difference. Is it possible that in right around an 8 month time frame, on stricter diet and training to hit around 150-160? Now for my questions.
To gain weight, how much do i have to eat? both calorie wise and whatever else.
Would it help to lift on the side of swim? (preferably not replacing swim)
If i struggle to eat veggies, but am able to make smoothies/blend veggies into juice and chug them; is that ok?
I would love any other advice you guys give!

2023.03.30 05:15 10throwawayantsy Are these experiences even bad? Be brutally honest. (TW)

Idk if this stuff is bad. Even if it is, I feel like everyone has some type of heinous story, so who really cares? Is the whole world going to go to therapy and cry with me about their lives? There are so many people to feel bad for. Idk if I'm numb or whats wrong with me but tell me what u think.
I just feel like it's like... having problems because you grew up during a war, but so did everyone else. Who really cares about your individual experience? What are you gonna do, cry?
  1. My cousin was my age and forcibly fingered me. I was 10. We did other shit but I did not enjoy myself. My cousin regularly told me how secretive everything was and encouraged me to make videos. When I confronted my cousin about it later they said I was remembering everything completely wrong and that I was a fucking liar.
My assessment: Not that bad but had an annoyingly bad effect on me
  1. I was 14 and this guy made me put my hand in his pants when I was kissing him. He's kind of a loser now with a mullet and i dont really think about this much at all
My assessment: Not rly that bad but kind of unfortunate
  1. 18 year old reaches out to 15 yr old me to go on "date." When i gets there he pushes me into a car, starts kissing her. I gave him head but then he wont let me leave and keeps making me continue when im trying to leave. He'd ask if im ok but would twist my arm when i tried to go. i told him i wanted to leave repeatedly. After i left he blocked me on social media and moved to another state. I reported this to the police and they said it was a "mildly serious" case.
My assessment: This rly sucked and took a while to get over it
  1. FWB would randomly take the condom off in the dark without notice. Or he would put it in my ass when i was too high to really respond, but eventually took it out when i told him to.
My assessment: Idk this feels like a mild annoyance
  1. Dude I was hooking up with regularly called me stupid and the r word. He made me have sex without a condom and made me cuddle with him after. He told me he [email protected] me and smiled. the next few days he was really paranoid i would go to the police. he got more sexually vanilla and i got mad at him about this and insulted his manhood
My assessment: Honestly the sex was pretty good so i feel more annoyed than anything
  1. Dude took off condom intentionally and finished in me without warning, then stalked me for a bit.
My assessment: Unfortunate, gross
  1. I had a one nights stand and guy demands sex from 11pm-6am and sets timers. He asked so much and i eventually let him do whatever because i was so tired
My assessment: Idk i dont really think about this at all
  1. i went to guy's house and he was much uglier in person. I told him previously about bad sexual experiences in a vague way. He's insistent about making out with her immediately and making me get on my knees to blow him. He returns the favor and it wasn't unenjoyable but he grossed me out in general. Guy becomes obsessed with me and also wouldnt leave me alone. i dont think about this a lot but i think its gross
My assessment: Gross but ok
  1. I kept getting groped her at a party and i was embarrassed so she just had sex with him.
My assessment: Unfortunate, more of my fault lol
10)I told a guy to stop during sex. He said he just needs "a bit more" but i punch him in the throat instead.
My assessment: It's ok he deserved it lol
11) im rly high and dont know who i am. i have unprotected creampie sex with a guy while im at least partially passed out. but he did check in with me a lot. we begin dating. He gets obsessive and jealous. He would threaten to hit/rape me if she didn't have sex with him (in a calm voice). He'd also tell her how worthless i was when they cuddled together. But sometimes he'd also be caring and understanding if i didnt want sex. He got very mad at me (theywe both cheated on each other) and inflicted pain leading to me crying and getting a migraine, then left and cut off contact with me. Though ,he did try to reconnect many times
My assessment: This relationship was not ideal but I feel like I provoked him regularly and intentionally
12) Guy puts in it when i kept tellign him not to without a condom. i got chlamydia.
My assessment: i feel like this is a mild annoyance
Other Possibly Concerning Events-
  1. at 15 i made out with college aged men
  2. at 15 yr i kept getting felt up by grown men on acid at concerts repeatedly
  3. at 17 2 hs boys surrounded me and begged me to kiss them and touch them. it was night so there was no one else on the beach
