Quick thoughts on 30 different VR games
2023.06.05 16:23 SlowShoes Quick thoughts on 30 different VR games
I'm keeping track of all the VR games I’ve played this year to catalogue them in hopes that they may give fellow VR gamers some fresh games to try out, or reasons to revisit older games that have had big updates. I'm currently up to 52 different VR games played this year. The first 22 that I played from January to March can be found
here. The latest 30 games are mostly on the Quest, but many are available on PCVR.
Some of the games listed below, I can see playing all year long, others are not my cup of tea, but they may interest you enough to try them out. In either case, here are my quick thoughts on the 30 games I’ve played during April and May of 2023.
TLDR: My top 5 games to check out are at the bottom and so is some info for a game giveaway. - ARK and ADE $9.99 Quest / Steam My quick take: A fun shooter with Pistol Whip vibes that is absolutely worth the price of admission. From the store page: “ARK and ADE is an action-jammed FPS shooter in which you get to experience the glory of the 80’s arcade era in a neon fused setting. Shoot your way through retro-futuristic levels filled with enemies, iconic over the top bosses and never ending bullets!” I played this game back when it was in App Lab before it graduated to the full store. It was such a fun shooter back then, and I’d look forward to new levels coming out every few months. Now that it made it out of app lab, has a bunch of levels and had the gameplay polished, it’s absolutely worth a pickup, especially for that price.
- Project Third Eye $9.99 Quest My quick take:A game where you make your own fun. From the store page: “Project Third Eye is an action physics sandbox with a built-in visual scripting panel to apply logic to spawnable items. This allows you to build your own modifications to the game and customize behaviors as you like.” Just like the description says, this is more of a proof of concept and sandbox game more so than a full fledged game with objectives. There are certainly neat ideas here and there, and the dev is really active with updates on Reddit. If you like to experiment and see how concepts develop in a game, you may enjoy this, but there’s no real direction beyond experimenting, so I dropped off fairly quickly.
- Jousting VR Demo $9.99 Quest / Steam Quest Demo My quick take:A bit light on gameplay, but there is some charm here. From the store page:“XIII century, Europe, royal market courtyard. You are a knight who joined the medieval tournament. Your task is 'simple.' Jump on your trusty steed, grab your lance & defeat the enemy. Take into consideration speed, accuracy, strength. Equipment is also important. The better gear the easier the task. Oh, and other knights - they want to win as much as you do.” As advertised, it's a jousting game in VR. I enjoyed the demo, but honestly it was a bit too finicky at times and just not worth a full buy to me. The atmosphere was fun though and there was a progression loop for those who get into it.
- Demeo $39.99 Quest and Steam (flatscreen as well) My quick take:This is a great game that I revisited from start to finish with four players. A must own. From the store page: “Adventurers, it’s time to unite! Gather your friends and fight monsters in Demeo, the turn-based tabletop strategy game of battle and glory. Roll dice, pick up miniatures, and free the world of Gilmerra in round after round of tabletop board game fun. With a huge assortment of monsters, playable classes, and environments to explore, it’s never the same game twice." I finally got a chance to play through the entirety of the game in VR with four friends, through each world, while trying a variety of characters. We even made a video ranking the best players and levels. It really is a solid dungeon crawling adventure. With 2 or more friends, this game really shines and is such a fun ride, despite how punishing the bosses can be. This is the closest you can get to D&D in VR without having a dungeon master. Well worth the asking price.
- Build and Drive Racing Demo Free Quest / Steam My quick take: Early days in development, maybe something to keep an eye on to see how it improves. From the store page: "Get ready for a new experience on Windows desktop and VR, where you get to build your ultimate racing machine, tailored to your driving style and optimized for performance, or race to the finish line with a monster what makes you smile. With stylised graphics and arcade-like physics, every turn, straightway and ramp will put your skills to the test. Feel the thrill of the race like never before in VR, as you immerse yourself counting the seconds on the home stretch." An early demo that has seen some updates. Maybe worth looking at in a few months after a bit more development. I did like what I saw, but honestly, if you’re looking for a finished racing game, try Mini Motor Racing X instead or some of the other heavier PCVR games available.
- Les Mills Body Combat $29.99 Quest My quick take: No subscriptions, great coaches and fun workouts that will make you sweat. From the store page: “Work out at home with a premium fitness app. LES MILLS, the world's leading fitness company, brings the BODYCOMBAT experience to your VR headset with an extensive workout portfolio, top-quality coaching, innovative mechanics, and different intensities.” With no subscriptions or hidden fees, lots of workouts, motivating coaches and the ability to compete with friends on leaderboards, this really is a dynamite workout app. I was working up a good sweat during my workouts, so be sure you have good facial insert and a fan ready. Highly recommended if you want a workout in VR for just the price of entry.
- Interkosmos 2000 $19.99 Quest / Steam My quick take:A difficult puzzle game, but rewarding if you have the patience. From the store page: “Go to space. Save the Future. Try not to Die. Welcome (back) to the world of Interkosmos for an even wilder, weirder and more wondrous adventure. Experience the intense exhilaration of spaceflight. Explore the awe-inspiring interiors of a realistic space capsule. Master the crucial systems that will keep you in orbit (and breathing). And while you’re at it, try your best not to die. Should you complete your mission, you just might save the future – and yourself. Should you fail? Let’s not think about that.” An intense puzzle game where you’re piloting a space ship with some very finicky controls. I found the experience way too difficult and exacting. Along with a bit of bugginess, that didn’t help in me determining if the error was my fault or the game's. If you have the patience, there certainly is some rewarding gameplay here, and an interesting story, but I found it all a bit too much to see to the end.
- The Light Brigade $24.99 Quest / Steam My quick take: In a world of rougelikes, this is one that stands out. From the store page: “As a member of The Light Brigade, humanity’s last line of defense, brave ruins bathed in darkness and free the trapped souls who need the salvation only your gun can provide. Shoot, master spells, and upgrade your capabilities to herald the Sun’s return in this roguelike VR shooter.” There’s quite a lot of rouge shooters on Quest and despite the plethora of choices, this one stands out. Be warned, it starts out slowly, but gets quite fun after you get to know the systems after about an hour in. While I did make it to the last boss, I died and never went back to finished it. The gameplay loop and dynamic levels were solid though. The slight upgrades and different classes during each run were interesting and kept me going for a while. The most frustrating time I had was learning the little tips, tricks and finer gameplay points, but it was worth the push through that initial rough patch.
- Resident Evil 4 $39.99 Quest My quick take: One of the best games in VR. A must own. From the store page: “Explore the world of Resident Evil 4, entirely remastered for VR. Step into the shoes of special agent Leon S. Kennedy on his mission to rescue the U.S. President’s daughter who was kidnapped by a mysterious cult. Come face to face with enemies, and uncover secrets with gameplay that revolutionized the survival horror genre. Battle horrific creatures and face-off against mind-controlled villagers while discovering their connection to the cult behind the abduction.” I forgot so much about this game from when I first played it 18 years ago on the GameCube. The long length, fun characters and how exciting the gun play is, all just came together perfectly. The development team spent a ton of time getting the VR feeling just right, and it’s absolutely one of the best on the Quest and well worth the price of entry. Additionally, once you play through the game the first time it really changes from survival horror to a whole new type of game action game. Simply outstanding.
- Mini Golf Hustler Free Quest My quick take: Early days in development. Some good ideas, but a bit too rough around the edges. From the store page: “Challenge Slick Willie Puttman in this FREE nine hole demo of Mini Golf Hustler. Hazards include armed torpedoes, tentacled arms, ornery tikis and more! Multiple betting games, including skins, match play and the fearsome traveling snake. All played at the same time.” I thought I’d check out another mini golf game to see what other ideas there might be outside of the king - Walkabout Mini Golf. While there were some solid ideas for holes, the betting felt uneven, and everything else felt in their very early stages. To be fair, no other mini golf game feels even close to the accuracy of Walkabout, so I think it’s a tough go for any other games to match. It's probably best to stick with the champ for now, but I applaud the dev for trying something different.
- Pin City Free Quest (open beta on Discord) / Steam My quick take: Early days, but wow, worth a download and one to watch in the future. From the store page: "Pin City is a bowling game unlike any other bowling game you’ve played before. We strove to bring the spirit of mini-golf into the world of bowling. We’ve taken the standard bowling setup (straight lane, 10 pins, 1 ball) and expanded, transformed, and evolved it. We wanted to give people a chance to bowl in ways that would be impossible, illegal, or extremely impractical.” An early alpha game, but boy, what a great start, I’m really looking forward to the team getting the physics feeling right with weight and feel of the bowling balls and seeing how much more gameplay they can add. Really worth the download or heading over to their Discord to get a Quest key for free to try it out. The quirky bowling, physics and gameplay they're experimenting with really got me excited to see how this one comes together in the next several months.
- Mash Me Up Free Quest My quick take: Please devs, add more multiplayer support! From the store page: “Do you want to play party games with your friends or meet someone new? All is just one button press away with Mash Me Up. One button, multiple games. Will it be Air Hockey, Pier Pong, Flingball, or… Get ready for a surprise! Press, Play, Enjoy and Go Again!” If this game got a bit more development love it would be incredible. As it stands now, there are several mini games you can play against one person. Most are just okay, but a handful are real gems, and one particularly is incredible - Geo Guesser. Hands down the best mini game in the pack. With four, or six players and some new content, they could easily charge for just this one game. As it stands now, it’s a great two player game, but you’ll need to bring your own friend as the servers are pretty barren. Worth a download though for sure as you’ll get a night of fun out of it.
- THZZLS - Treasures Lost In Time $4.99 Quest My quick take: A unique puzzler that can be pretty relaxing, but repetitive. From the store page: “Our first THZZLE is called "Der Bazar", the world's first VR toy theatre puzzle game. The Bazar is a VR puzzle game where you have to place furniture and props in the right places in old-fashioned rooms according to an old picture you see. The game is set in 19th century Germany and each room has objects taken from the German lifestyle magazine "Der Bazar", published in Berlin.” This one used to be free, with paid content, but it has since changed as they added more content. You recreate a scene with cutouts of people and furniture in a 3D space. It seemed to have endless puzzles with randomization of scenes. I could see someone going to this for a relaxing 10-15 minutes, but it is a lot of the same each time and didn’t grab me fully. If you’re looking for a puzzle game that’s outside of the usual ones you find in the store, it’s not a bad choice for the price. Keep in mind though its hand tracking only, so for some that may be a non starter, even though it felt just fine.
- Barbaria $19.99 Quest / Steam My quick take:What I imagine Gorn is like with a solid game loop of RTS. From the store page: “Do you have what it takes to be the Mightiest in Barbaria? Welcome to a brutal world where visceral motion-controlled combat blends seamlessly with god-scale base-building and asynchronous multiplayer raids. Use fists, axes, swords, bows, rocks, or anything you can grab to dominate your foes in intense 1st-person combat. Then jump out to your immortal form and watch your minions carry on the battle while you rain down meteors from above. Systemic combat, versatile enemy AI, and player-created defenses make every battle unique.” I recognize there is a lot here to do in this game - if you like the game loop. Unfortunately, it really didn’t do much for me. I was expecting more RTS than Gorn style gameplay and was not pulled in by the fighting or quests offered. I have to say that the humor was spot on, and it certainly had good visuals, the game was just not for me. All that being said, there is a lot of content here and you could be playing this for quite some time if you think this could be your jam.
- Toy Monsters Free Quest Demo / $4.99 Quest My quick take:Plants vs Zombies in AR with hand tracking that does enough unique stuff to be worth it. From the store page: “Toy Monsters VR is a mixed-reality tabletop tower defense inspired by classic Plants vs Zombies. Built from the ground up with hand tracking and passthrough in mind. As you progress through the 20 levels, you'll unlock new toys with unique special powers. You can enhance your toys with magical potions and use crystal power to unleash magic beams from your hands, transform your fingers into flamethrowers, and more.” This game has come a long way since its initial release. It’s a solid hand tracking Plants vs. Zombies game with its own twist on powers and uses passthrough quite nicely. My biggest complaint is that you really need to complete the game all in one go (about an hour or so) as it doesn’t keep track of your upgrades if you quit. Essentially, trying to pass a later level without prior upgrades or powerups is near impossible. Despite that one issue, give at least the demo a try and if you like it, the price is pretty fair for what you get.
- Exit Condition One Free Quest Demo / $4.99 Quest My quick take: A bit rough around the edges, but escape room fans will find fun with it. From the store page: “You awake from cryo in a mysterious museum. A robot refers to you as a curator and the security system is malfunctioning. Can you get things back to normal and escape? There are no jump scares. The game is designed ground-up for roomscale VR on the Quest, but supports all locomotion modes. Most objects can be interacted with, it fully uses physics, and the hands don't ‘ghost out.’” According to the description, this is still a work in progress. That being said, it was a neat escape game that I felt I got my money’s worth from. It certainly was a bit rough around the edges with its gameplay and had some obscure puzzles to work through, but I did finish it and had a good time with it. Try the demo for sure, and perhaps when it’s finally finished, some of those rough edges will be polished up, but as it stands now, it was pretty solid.
- Hyperdash Free Quest/Steam My quick take: A solid online shooter, but you'll have to put in the time to get good to find the fun. From the store page: “Hyper Dash is a free VR multiplayer team based shooter. Payload, Domination, Control Point, (Team) Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Elimination, Ball and remix them with Mutators! Dash, sprint, and rail grind your way across the arenas to engage the enemy in fast-paced combat and secure the objective for your team. Offline mode/Bots, Dedicated servers, Private servers, Rebind-able controls, Left hand support, Voice chat.” For a free to play shooter, this one had great controls, nice graphics, a good gameplay loop, plenty of comfort options and a solid player base. All that being said, every player I faced off against were top tier, so I spent my time just dying round after round. This is a good game with a solid player base and there's fun here - if you’re willing to learn the ropes. It's bad for newbies like me just looking to have a good time and get a few kills.
- Please, Don’t Touch Anything $9.99 Quest / $4.99 Steam My quick take: A game for escape room devotees only. From the store page: "Please, Don’t Touch Anything is a cryptic, brain-racking button-pushing puzzle game. Covering for a colleague taking a bathroom break, you find yourself in front of a mysterious console with a green screen monitor showing a pixelated live image of an unknown city. Also present is an ominous red button with the simple instruction to not touch anything! Push the red button once or press it many times. Your choices and actions will lead to outrageous and frightening consequences and over 30 unique puzzle endings.” This is a weird one. A really obscure puzzle game that rewards experimentation, but is absolutely punishing with difficulty. If you’re really good at escape games and don’t get frustrated easily, you may enjoy the tedium. If not, you’ll end up like me, watching a tutorial to find out how to get different endings. But if you find yourself doing that, why not just watch a playthrough.
- Eleven Table Tennis $29.99 Quest/Steam My quick take: Still one of the best, but there’s so much untapped potential. From the store page: “The ultimate Table Tennis simulator. Play opponents in online multiplayer or practice against the advanced AI. With physics designed to be as real as ever achieved in a Table Tennis simulator, you will forget you are in VR." I finally got back to this game after the new UI was implemented. It looks much more user friendly, but much to my disappointment, there were no new arenas, music, or official doubles options. There is so much potential for expanding this game, and I feel like the devs are just content to have it remain in the state it currently is. Which, to be fair, is a perfect implementation of table tennis in VR. It’s still one of the best VR games out there and absolutely a must own. I just really wish they would add an officially supported doubles mode and expand out the game a bit more because the unofficial doubles mode is a real pain to get set up and only barely worth the struggle. If you'd like to see how to set that doubles up currently, here is a video I was a part of.
- Breachers $29.99 Quest/Steam My quick take: Come one, come all, this is 5 v 5 at its finest. From the store page: “In Breachers, you plan your assault or orchestrate your defense as a team through intense close-quarters combat. Whether you play as an enforcer or a revolter, master your nifty gadgetry, customize your powerful weaponry and beat your opponents in stunning environments. Intuitive to grasp. Endlessly playable.” Wow, wow, wow. This officially launched and is such a polished game. With multiple maps, intuitive movement and full lobbies, this game is simply spectacular. Despite the difficulty curve in being good at the game, it’s still a fun time even if you’re not the best, which is something special that few games manage to pull off. Where this game especially shines is with friends. If you can muster up a team of five to take on other random players, you’ll be playing this game for months. Give this a go, and if you're not any good, that's okay, because you'll still be better than the bots and a welcome addition to someone's team.
- Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Outcast (Sidequest mod) Free Demo on Quest / $9.99 (Full Game on Steam) My quick take: Come for the lightsaber play, stay if you can tolerate the puzzles. From the store page: “JK XR is a standalone VR port of the popular Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast game by Lucasarts and Raven Software. Brought to VR by Team Beef & Friends. There are lots of mods and access to the free demo level available through the JK XR Companion App, which is automatically also installed alongside JK XR on your headset.” I never played this game when it first came out on flatscreen in 2002, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The first part of the game you’re playing essentially as a Han Solo type - a smart talkin’ gun slinger. The next part, you’re a cool Jedi chopping off limbs. Absolutely great execution as always by Team Beef, and you can’t beat the price. There is even a free demo to try out to see if you like it. All that being said, the game’s old puzzles, navigation and gameplay felt every bit of 20 years old. After dying multiple times because of missing an exact jump, getting lost and backtracking because I didn't see an obscure elevator and wasting time trying to navigate odd puzzles, I just found it to be too much to overcome to continue to the end. This is no slight on Team Beef and the great work they did with this port, the game just hasn’t aged the best.
- CoasterMania $9.99 Quest My quick take:Early days, but still some fun to be had. There could be something special here after a few updates. From the store page: “CoasterMania is a physics-based VR rollercoaster game where you create the ride of your life! Use wacky contraptions and elements to fly through the sky, then experience your creation by jumping in the front seat. Sandbox mode: Build your dream rollercoaster without any rules but the rules of physics. When you're done, share your coaster or experience the engineering marvels of others. Design your own rides and upload them online.” You know, this game is just silly fun. It's early days for sure, and the tracks don't twist and come together as easily together as I’d hoped, which makes for a difficult time creating exactly what you want. It is satisfying though to have a roller coaster leap from one track to another over a gap. At this point the game is more of a sandbox than a full game with objectives (which is coming). The coasters other people have created are fun, so if you’re not into creating, there is that option to play with other people's designs, plus you can ride them in first person. I look forward to more updates and think it's worth looking at for sure, but if you’re looking for something a bit more fleshed out currently you can try Stunt Track Builder.
- David Slade Mysteries: Case Files $9.99 Quest/Steam My quick take: You’re a forensic cop, here are your tools. Good luck dummy. From the store page: “Take to the dark and violent streets of downtown Riverside, where you investigate gruesome and violent homicides using a range of Forensic tools and your wits! Inspired by the classic Police Quest adventure series, reborn & reimagined for VR. Includes two epic episodes!” Slade is a murder mystery game that is ruthless in it’s difficulty. Honestly, there are several play throughs of this game on YouTube and none have beaten the first case because it was too hard, they all gave up. This game offers no hints, is super abstract and insanely difficult. Why did I keep playing? Well, the game’s tools were implemented quite well, the story was compelling, and I just felt I had to see this through to the end for my own sanity. Despite being as hard as nails, I somehow managed to finish the first case, then moved on to the second. No real spoilers, but the second case does a complete 180 and essentially becomes a horror game where you’re only weapon is your wits. A real departure from the first case. Again, I found myself frustrated, confused and turned around, but again, I had to power through it because something kept pulling me in. If you’re a masochist for puzzle games, I’d recommend this game.
- Home Detective Free w/IAP - Quest My quick take:Fun use of AR, but pretty basic. From the store page: “Use your own living room to solve the crime! Using passthrough, the crime scene is overlaid onto your play area, leaving you free to explore and find clues. Use the patent-pending Residual Heat Scanner to detect the criminals' recent movements, and then dust for fingerprints or try to find evidence left behind. With your wits, and your trusty sidekick Steve Dobbins' snarky comments, you're sure to get to the bottom of these confusing crimes.” I appreciate the interesting use of passthrough and AR in this game. The first case is free to try, so if you’re into AR and passthrough, it’s worth a try. It's $3.99 for another case if you’re into it, but right now, it’s a pretty basic, but solid idea. My biggest complaint is that all my tools were on a shelf that was inaccessible because they were in my wall. I guess AR is still not quite there yet.
- Vertigo Remastered $24.99 Steam My quick take: A fun and wacky ride from start to finish. From the store page: “It's a classic premise - a massive subterranean scientific facility full of mysteries, with aliens bursting in from alternate universes to wreak havoc. The twist? You're one of those aliens. But you're not here to wreak havoc (collateral damage disregarded), you're just trying to get home. A difficult endeavor, as it turns out this facility is more than prepared to deal with extraterrestrial threats.” Because I heard such great things about Vertigo 2, I thought I’d try out this game before I played the sequel. I was really blown away by how fun the game was and pleasantly surprised that it holds up so well. Considering its a 2016 remake, and VR was still figuring out a lot of things like movement, this still felt fresh. With lots of unique ideas, upgrades and areas to play in, I heartily recommend this one and am looking forward to playing the sequel.
- Playin’ Pickleball $19.99 Quest My quick take:Solid physics, but really only for pickleball fans, or a group of four friends. From the store page: “Playin’ Pickleball is an authentic reproduction of Pickleball in Virtual Reality! Physics, sounds and mechanics have been carefully mapped from actual Pickleball game play. Even the scoring and rules are based on the USA Pickleball Association’s Official Rulebook.” Pickleball is sweeping the nation and if I recall correctly, even ForeVR is getting in on the game with an upcoming title. I’m much more of a tennis than pickleball guy, but I have to say, this game has pretty solid physics. Like most games, this is exponentially better with one or better yet, three other people you know. The AI players can be pretty uninteresting hitting it back and forth without much variance. Also the environments are a bit basic. I have to applaud the movement, physics and customizable items though as they all felt very well implemented. If you want something a bit less daunting than tennis, this might be what you're looking for.
- Pong $6.99 Quest My quick take:A neat take on Pong, but you’ll have more fun with Cybrix. From the store page: “Classic paddle game reimagined for VR. Destroy all the bricks. Use your paddles to swing at the balls and the balls have built-in assistance to return back toward you. Take advantage of the pistol and magneto power-ups to cause major damage. Or just swing hard at the balls to create large blast radius. Oh and watch out for those mines going for your head. Lean left/right or crouch to avoid.” I appreciated the ideas the developers had in this modern take on Pong, but it was ultimately quite short and not nearly as fun as Cybrix. That being said for the price, I got my money’s worth and would love to see it get a bit more polish and levels in an update.
- Extreme Escape $4.99 Quest / Steam (Early Access) My quick take:One of those special games where you really feel like you're in the environment. From the store page: “Have you ever wondered how it would feel to travel in a hot air balloon and fly above clouds? Have you ever wanted to face your fear of heights and enclosed spaces? Perhaps you wanted to become a pilot and test your critical thinking skills. Looking for a breathtaking experience? Try Extreme Escape.” The game says “early access,” but honestly I believe this has been abandoned. For the price, you get an extremely short, but fun and unique escape room experience. You’re not going to find this game too hard, but I was brought into its world and completely immersed - I had a true sense of dread and panic. The even shorter “demo” inside the game puts you on a sinking submarine and was extremely memorable. Seldom have I felt so immersed in a game. I’d recommend it for this price, just because of how it made me feel, but it’s a real shame about the very short length and that it’s abandoned.
- The Last Worker $19.99 Quest / SteamMy quick take:Gaming with a heavy message, but mediocre gameplay. From the store page:“The Last Worker is an immersive narrative adventure centered around a lone worker’s last stand in an increasingly automated world, The Last Worker is a unique blend of work simulation and stealth strategic gameplay. The game is set in a lonely, oppressive but strangely beautiful environment, with characters designed by comics legend Mick McMahon. Kurt works for the world’s largest retailer and is forced to choose between capitalism or activism. Having dedicated his life to work, Kurt’s loyalty is put to the test when a group of activists ask him to dismantle Jüngle from the inside.” I really wanted to like this game. It had an interesting concept, but navigating, fail states and some very annoying bugs frustrated me to the point where I just said it wasn’t worth my time. That and the story wasn’t speaking to me. It’s well rated, so I’m probably on the opposite side of this one from most people. It's unique in many ways, so check out the teaser and see if it might be for you.
- Shadow Point $19.99 Quest My quick take:Fisherman’s Tale vibes with an excellent story and puzzles that makes you feel smart. From the store page: “Built for VR, Shadow Point is a story-driven puzzle game set between a mountaintop observatory and an ever-changing fantasy world. Explore a vibrant kingdom, cast shadows and solve mind-bending puzzles as you uncover the mystery of missing schoolgirl, Lorna McCabe who vanished from Shadow Point Observatory twelve years ago. As your adventure unfolds, you will manipulate gravity, play with your own reflection, walk on walls, peer through a magical lens to reveal an alternate reality and much more.” I had this game on my wishlist forever and finally pulled the trigger, and boy am I glad I did. I really enjoyed the story, gameplay and ended up marathoning it in one session (which I don't recommend doing). It is a few hours long, and there are extra puzzles to go back to if you’d like. It had some serious Fisherman’s Tale vibes, so if you like those type of puzzle games, this is for you. The puzzles make you stop and think, and more importantly, progress nicely. I was never stuck, but certainly had to really contemplate how to solve some of them. It is slightly finicky with having to line up the shadows exactly to progress, but that is a minor complaint. Give this one a go for sure.
I hope you find a few games on this list that you might not have heard of, or that you might find worth revisiting. Let me know here or on the Ruff Talk
Discord channel if you have a game you enjoy that I should try, I'm always open to recommendations. Until then, I hope your next VR experience is a memorable one.
Also, the week this is posted, I'm hosting a contest where one winner gets a $29.99 or less, Quest game of their choice. You can enter on the discord channel above, but will need to have five posts on the discord channel within a week to enter, so if that interests you, feel free to join. 2023.06.05 15:37 SevereContribution35 Game Matrix: Analysis of GDC 2017 "Playtesting: Avoiding Evil Data"
| Source: Playtesting: Avoiding Evil Data Speaker: Adriaan de Jongh This article offers a comprehensive analysis of the source video. While it closely follows the video's content, it also includes my own interpretations and expansions on the concepts presented, providing a deeper exploration into the art of game design. Definition of Evil Data 1. What is Evil Data In the domain of game design, playtesting is commonly considered a fundamental aspect. This crucial stage of the development process often encapsulates the game's climax, offering the first glimpse into the success or failure of its design. Playtesting can reveal if initial pitfalls transform into unforeseen advantages or if quick fixes metamorphose into unforeseen challenges. However, for numerous independent game designers, playtesting is viewed as a necessity tinged with apprehension—an inevitability that brings a confrontational moment of truth. The reception of critique on a piece that one is deeply invested in is not typically the major challenge here. This hurdle, while potentially daunting at first, is surmountable with time and experience. The more significant issue at hand is the prevalent use of traditional playtesting methods by independent game designers. These conventional methods, such as sourcing playtesters, executing playtests, gathering feedback, and deploying analytics, often result in ambiguous and confounding data—often contradictory and challenging to interpret. This type of data is characterized herein as "evil data," a term that signifies its deleterious implications on the game design process. Evil data not only complicates the process of game development but also diminishes the appeal of playtesting. It is, therefore, the objective of this discourse to examine the avoidance of evil data based on insights gathered from the development of seven different games over several years. This analysis will challenge some of the traditional wisdom surrounding playtesting and offer alternative perspectives. It intends to facilitate a more valuable and organized playtesting process, thereby mitigating the impact of evil data. The discussion progresses in a structured format, beginning with the explanation of what constitutes evil data, its origins, how it can be circumvented, and how to conduct more value-oriented playtests. It is imperative to distinguish at this juncture that QA and playtesting, though seemingly related, are fundamentally different aspects of game development. While QA emphasizes the functionality of the game, playtesting concerns itself with the quality of the experience. The concept of evil data is elucidated through an anecdote from a playtest of Hidden Folks. A confusion over the interaction mechanism of an in-game object highlighted the consequences of evil data. Misinterpretation of playtester feedback led to the implementation of a solution that detracted from the game's appeal, instead of enhancing it. This case underscores how misleading data can lead to misguided decision-making, thus making the game worse. Evil data is a by-product of the playtesting phase that can be misleading, unclear, and distracting. The ramifications of evil data can range from erroneous decision-making, degradation of game quality, and extended development periods. Understanding and circumventing evil data are therefore integral to creating a successful game and optimizing the playtesting process. 2. Eight Factors Result in Evil Data During playtesting of Fingal, John and Brenda Romero criticized the sexually suggestive gestures in the game at a public event 2.1 Physical Location Evil data in playtesting can stem from multiple factors, with physical location being a significant one. The setting of the playtest profoundly influences the data obtained. For instance, during a playtesting session for the game Fingal, renowned designers John and Brenda Romero provided critical feedback at a public event, which might have differed significantly in a private, relaxed setting at home. Similarly, games like Hidden Folks and Bounden recorded differing player behavior based on the context of play. Event-based playtests often resulted in quicker and less thorough play, which influenced the game design negatively. In the case of Bounden, this resulted in repetitive gameplay as the design was overly influenced by the first few minutes of play. To mitigate the introduction of evil data due to the physical location, it's crucial to align the playtesting environment with the game's intended setting, be it a home, a party for local multiplayer games, or other suitable locations. Hence, physical location plays a critical role in achieving accurate, useful playtesting feedback. Different types of players have different understanding of the dialog boxes in the game 2.2 Tester Diversity The diverse nature of potential players necessitates an expansive testing demographic in game design. During the early playtesting of "Hidden Folks", distinct reactions based on gaming background underscored the importance of this diversity. Self-identified gamers and non-gamers perceived additional elements in the game, such as dialog boxes, differently. This disparity in interpretation extended to other elements and demographics, such as age and gaming habits. To mitigate this 'evil data', playtests should not be limited to a specific group. Everyone, irrespective of their gaming background or demographics, can offer valuable insights. Expanding the testing group to include individuals from different backgrounds, gaming experience, age groups, and cultural backgrounds enhances the understanding of how diverse players interact with and perceive the game. This diversified feedback provides a more comprehensive and accurate representation of potential player responses, leading to improved game design and development. Don't explain anything 2.3 Your Introduction The third aspect pertains to your game introduction. A common error among independent game developers is a full game briefing, encompassing story, controls, and objectives before allowing testers to engage with the game. This approach is detrimental as it potentially overlooks vital stumbling blocks that players may encounter without such instructions. In order to circumvent this error, it's beneficial to eschew exhaustive introductions. Allow testers to independently navigate the game, thus mimicking the actual player experience. Such a strategy provides valuable insights on user-interface, control, and game introductions. However, disclosing that the game is still under development could alleviate tester stress and encourage honest feedback. The aim is to observe where testers encounter difficulties without any pre-conceived instructions, thereby ensuring authentic data collection. 2.4 Surface Problems The fourth point is 'surface problems'. These are challenges within the game design that are noticeable and yet frequently overlooked due to their persistent nature. An example of a surface problem might be the variability in difficulty across different player types or the excessive focus on one detail, such as a character's jump, neglecting broader concerns like the number of controllers required for multiplayer engagement. These problems, whilst seemingly inconsequential, can lead to negative player experiences. Over time, repeated exposure to these issues can cause a sort of blindness among developers, thus neglecting crucial facets of the gaming experience. To circumvent the rise of evil data from these issues, developers should aim for holistic player experience evaluation. Avoid testing with a narrow focus, subdivided playtests, or a specific hypothesis. Implement frequent playtesting to generate comprehensive data, enabling the identification and mitigation of overlooked surface problems. Overlap of game patterns can be quickly fixed during testing 2.5 Alterations Between Playtests The fifth point involves a somewhat contentious practice of altering game builds between playtests. Issues can occur during playtests that affect players' experiences, for instance, the game's layering problems or an unintended default setting screen. These small glitches, although quick to fix, can impact the player's engagement and the extracted data, causing players to potentially abandon the game earlier. Contrary to conventional advice among game developers, this issue can be mitigated by making changes to the game build during playtesting sessions. Shifting targets or disabling certain features between tests can greatly enhance the value of these sessions. This practice of adapting and amending can potentially lead to a more efficient resolution of these impediments. Oversized UI blocking the screen 2.6 Feedback The sixth consideration pertains to the interpretation of testers' feedback. Testers often express their sentiments regarding aspects they appreciate, those they do not, and elements they fail to comprehend. However, the game designer's task involves sieving through the assorted remarks to isolate the fundamental issue. Testers may articulate perceived problems that are misrepresentations of the core problem. For instance, an issue with the UI in the initial version of 'Hidden Folks' illustrated this conundrum. Many testers suggested the targets should not constantly remain on the screen, leading to a modification that allowed the UI panel to be hidden. While no further complaints were raised, hardly any testers used this feature. Eventually, it became evident that the issue was not the constant presence of targets but the UI panel's substantial size obscuring the screen. This example accentuates the importance of discerning the underlying problem from the provided feedback. This feedback filtering process is a crucial skill for effective playtesting. Thus, designers should delve into the 'why' behind testers' comments to better understand the concerns raised. Traditional ratings can be insufficiently instructive 2.7 Surveys The seventh facet pertains to surveys, quintessential sources of secondhand data. Traditional ratings can be insufficiently instructive, not providing the clarity needed to address specific game issues. A one-star review, for instance, provides no substantive guidance on how to improve level-3 gameplay, leaving game designers to hypothesize about potential solutions. Furthermore, open-ended survey questions often result in problem-solving suggestions that may not reveal the genuine root of the problem. An example includes players who struggled with level-3 not because of difficulty in finding 'John,' but due to the unrecognized ability to drag a car that would reveal 'John.' No suggestion in the feedback directly hinted at this core issue. Moreover, player perception of the game often evolves during gameplay, resulting in correspondence that reflects the emotions and frustrations experienced towards the end of play sessions. Thus, to mitigate the risk of unhelpful secondhand data from surveys and questionnaires, other more labor-intensive yet reliable methods of gathering player feedback should be employed. Quantitative analysis cannot explain the reasons behind the data 2.8 Online Playtesting The eighth dimension of our discussion pertains to online playtesting, a process often rife with evil data, which implies misleading or unhelpful information that may lead to misguided game design decisions. Developers often solicit feedback from colleagues, friends, or beta testers. However, the interpretive ambiguity of the resultant feedback can distort the understanding of game design challenges. There are various strategies for eliciting useful data from online testers, yet each harbors its own pitfalls. Direct questioning is the most straightforward approach; however, it tends to yield the most unhelpful, secondhand data. The feedback derived from this method is often retrospective and solution-oriented, lacking specificity and failing to illuminate the underlying problems. Hence, we advocate a shift away from this method due to its generally lackluster quality. Game analytics is another option, although it also presents hurdles. For instance, to leverage analytics effectively, developers must first hypothesize what they're attempting to understand. It can reveal quantitative measures such as the time taken to find a target, but it fails to elucidate the reason behind the measure. Therefore, designers are still left guessing - a practice synonymous with evil data. Another prevalent analytic technique is funnel analysis, tracking player progression from level to level. While it can showcase where players drop off, it, again, does not explain why, leading us back into the realm of guesswork. A more spatial analytic approach is heat maps, offering a more granular view of player interactions. However, they still fall short of observing actual gameplay. Gameplay recordings, on the other hand, offer a closer approximation to a first-hand experience. While such recordings still contain some evil data, they allow developers to see what the players do and hear their concurrent comments. Despite the potential pitfalls, gameplay recordings can be a valuable tool for extracting information about level flow, timing, and other specific gameplay elements. However, the requirement for technical setup may deter some potential testers, particularly those less tech-savvy. It also necessitates substantial investment in time to review the footage thoroughly. In conclusion, each method of gathering online playtesting data harbors potential for generating evil data. Recognizing and navigating these potential pitfalls is a critical skill for developers seeking to understand and improve their game design effectively. 3. Organizing Playtests with Minimal Effort 3.1 Playtesting Overhead and Strategies to Minimize It Despite its importance, playtesting can be a time-consuming and resource-intensive process. It involves recruiting testers, setting up testing sessions, collecting and analyzing data, and implementing changes based on feedback. This overhead can be a significant burden, particularly for small development teams or those with tight schedules or budgets. However, there are strategies to minimize the overhead associated with playtesting. One approach is to streamline the recruitment process. This could involve maintaining a pool of potential testers who can be called upon as needed, rather than recruiting new testers for each session. Another strategy is to automate data collection and analysis where possible. For example, developers could use software tools to track player behavior during testing sessions and generate reports. Furthermore, developers can prioritize playtesting efforts based on the stage of development and the nature of the game. Early in development, it may be more important to test core mechanics and gameplay loops, while later stages might focus more on content, balance, and polish. By focusing playtesting efforts where they are most needed, developers can make the most of their resources. Use of Email Templates 3.2 The Use of Email Templates and Reminders Communication is a crucial aspect of playtesting. Developers need to communicate with testers to arrange testing sessions, provide instructions, and gather feedback. This communication can be time-consuming, particularly when dealing with large numbers of testers. One way to streamline this process is to use email templates. These can be used to send standardized communications to testers, saving time and ensuring that all necessary information is included. For example, an invitation to a testing session might include details of the time and location, instructions for accessing the game, and information on what the developers are looking to test. In addition to email templates, reminders can be used to ensure that testers are aware of upcoming testing sessions and any actions they need to take. These reminders can be automated, reducing the administrative burden on developers and helping to ensure that testing sessions run smoothly. 3.3 Alternative Playtesting Structures While traditional playtesting sessions, where testers play the game under the supervision of the developers, are valuable, there are alternative structures that can provide different insights and reduce overhead. 3.3.1 Remote Playtesting Testers play the game in their own time and provide feedback via email or an online form. This approach can be less resource-intensive than traditional sessions, as it does not require a physical location or the presence of developers. It also allows for more flexible scheduling, which can be beneficial when dealing with testers in different time zones or with varying availability. 3.3.2 Group Playtesting Multipletesters play the game simultaneously and discuss their experiences. This can provide insights into the social dynamics of the game, reveal how players learn from each other, and generate a wider range of feedback. It can also be a more efficient use of resources, as feedback from multiple testers can be gathered in a single session. 3.3.3 Longitudinal Playtesting The same testers play the game over an extended period. This can reveal how the player's experience evolves over time, how players engage with long-term goals or progression systems, and how retention and replayability factors play out. While this approach requires a longer-term commitment from testers, it can provide deep insights that are not possible to obtain from single-session playtests. Highlights of the talk 4. Conclusion The insights gleaned from effective playtesting can be a game-changer in the development process. They provide a unique perspective on the player's experience, revealing how players interact with the game, what they enjoy, and what frustrates them. This understanding can inform design decisions, ensuring that the game delivers a satisfying and engaging experience. Therefore, it is highly encouraged for game developers to apply these insights in their work. By avoiding evil data, organizing playtests with minimal effort, and leveraging the strategies discussed, developers can enhance the effectiveness of their playtesting process. This not only reduces the effort required but also leads to a better player experience, ultimately contributing to the success of the game. 2023.06.05 14:44 lifesthateasy Silvia v6 with Auber PID - any best practices/configs?
I recently installed the Auber PID with pre-infusion on my Silvia v6. Do you have any best practices or recommended recipes? I've pulled about 6 shots, but I'm experiencing inconsistencies even at the same grind setting on my Niche Zero. I use RDT and WDT, along with the PID timer (so time's a constant). I don't use a puck screen but place filter paper at the bottom of the portafilter.
Specific questions:
- Should I turn off pre-infusion? I understand it's fake pre-infusion and some people criticize it, but my pucks seem fine. My understanding is the pressure builds up gradually, and within the 1.2 seconds it's set to turn the pump on initially, the pressure doesn't really build up all that much so it shouldn't destroy the puck. I'll try turning it off later as I'm already over-caffeinated, but any insights? Most people who called it "garbage" in forums seem not to have used it.
- What temperature do you set the PID for light Ethiopians? I'm using the stock 105°C as that should equal to around 95.5C at the group head (if I read the instructions right), but I'd like to hear your experiences.
- Any recommended configurations for improved results? Pre-infusion times or any other settings?
Thanks!

2023.06.05 14:10 k4tune06 Real Estate Question
We bought our home in December 2020, doing it ‘online’ because of Covid. We were buying in a province we didn’t live in yet so we weren’t allowed to travel there until we moved. When we put in our offer, it was conditional pending home inspection and well and septic inspection. We were notified that there was already a conditional offer on the property and that it was based on whether or not the other buyers home sold, so the agent reached out to the other buyer and asked if it was happening and they backed out of the deal. It got tricky because the agent was representing her husband who was the seller, and she lived in the home with him. She tried to change the terms of the deal a few times which made it frustrating for us but we wanted the house so we opted not to walk away from the deal. We did report her to her broker for a conflict of interest, her broker denied knowing that the house was even listed. One hurdle was our well and septic inspection. They made it difficult and refused to let the inspection happen saying ‘it’s winter (absolutely no snow and it was +7 C) and we don’t have time to dig up the covers because one is under the deck’, but they did assure us that the previous potential buyers had an inspection done and everything was fine but that she wasn’t comfortable sharing it because someone else paid for it. My concern was whether or not our pool (they installed it) was on top of the septic field. They told us no, and told us where our septic field was. When the septic was pumped before we moved in, the pumping company did a quick camera inspection and said everything inside the tank looked fine.
In the summer of 2021, a neighbour mentioned that we were lucky the previous owners had a flood or else we wouldn’t have a finished basement. This flood was never disclosed to us on the property disclosure statement. We let it go as we didn’t see any lingering issues.
Fast forward to today and we’re selling to move for work. The buyer is military and requires a well and septic inspection as per of their process, totally understandable. Guess what comes out of it? The septic field is directly under the pool and according to the plumber who did the inspection, the flow rate is too low so it’s been compromised. I lost my mind. Called the pool company to see if permits had been pulled for the installation that required them to know where the field was, they said no. The excavator however, told me that he asked the previous owner where the field was and they told him ‘not there’. I’ve asked for a second opinion as a plumber is not necessarily a septic expert and the septic company came out yesterday to take a quick look. At first glance, they say there is no evidence that the field has been compromised but they’re going to come back when the rain stops to do a flow test. The buyer wants us to drop the price by $20k, we’re willing to pay the average of three quotes IF the second flow test shows that it’s damaged. The septic person did explain that while it’s not ideal or recommended to put a pool over the septic field, it also doesn’t automatically mean it’s damaged and often isn’t. It just makes it more inconvenient if work needs to be done. We’ve never experienced an issue with our system.
About 10 days after listing, my realtor and I joked about how strange it was that the previous owner (a realtor) hadn’t brought a single person through the house during the height of military house hunting season (we live in a 4 bed, 2 bath home on a 1-acre lot 5 minutes from base making it an ideal family home). I’m convinced she didn’t show it because she lied about the findings of the inspection and knew when her buyers came through they’d have to do the well and septic for their financing and then we’d know she lied. She did, after all, already hide the basement flood from us. We were also told, after the fact by someone who knew the other potential buyers, that they offered $25k less than asking. I’m assuming it was to account for a new septic system.
My question is, if we have to pay out the price of a new system, can we go after her liability insurance? Or her personally?

2023.06.05 13:23 TELMxWILSON New Music! Pendulum, Metrik, Satl, Amoss, Workforce, DJ Sofa and more! Review include some Hiddem Gem bleeps & bloops as well as some deep liquid from Geostatic. [+weekly updated Spotify playlist] New Music Monday! (Week 23)
1. Niallo - Dreamland EP 💎 [DIVIDID]
Recommended if you like: [BORDERS], The Caracal Project, Tom Finster
It's no secret I'm a big fan of the innovative, all-around strange sounds that come out of the newschool movement, spearheaded by the likes of IMANU and The Caracal Project. While these two, especially the latter, already come up with some truly puzzling sound design that would cause your nan to lose the last bits of hope she might have had for future generation's music, the up-and-coming artists inspired by them arguably push the envelope in that regard even further, making even millennials scratch their head sometimes. Or should I say millen-nial-lo? You guessed right, we're once again talking about Bristol-based badboy Niall Overend, better known as Niallo!
After talking about his introspective debut EP in 2021 and taking a closer look at his unsettlingly good follow-up EP in 2022, it has basically become an annual (an-niall?) tradition to expose you guys to the weirdest of bleeps and bloops that the scene has to offer. However, since we last talked about him, he has been expanding his sound even further! After an excursion on Incurzion and a double tracker on Surveillance Music, he realised how hard it was to find a home for his most out-there stuff, eventually leading him down the path of self-releasing earlier this year. Still not quite creatively satisfied, he even started another alias called Everdone just last month, for the less club-oriented side of the Niall. In the midst of all this (positive) creative turmoil, he managed to reinvent himself and his sound once again, this time dreaming up a whole new, more uplifting aesthetic, while still retaining the otherworldly alien-esque sound design he has become known for at this point. That unique combination of flavours got the attention of an imprint Niall has been looking up to since basically forever, DIVIDID, promptly resulting in label manager ABIS signing him on for a full EP! Let's see what the fuzz is all about then, shall we?
We ascend into the ethereal sky islands created from Niall's wicked sound design wizardry, with the title track Dreamland. After easing into it all by synths so dreamy they immediately earn the track its title, a most wonderful, distinctly retro-futuristic and otherworldly choir makes it clear that this release is different from most others. I can't quite explain why, but this whole intro gives off such strong retro-futuristic dystopia vibes that I just can't help but picture BioShock Infinite in my head. Following this unique introduction to it all is an equally, if not even more so, eccentric drop, driven forward by a syncopated, ever-changing flow and brought to life by all sorts of different bleeps and bloops.
As residents of the sky islands, we of course don't have any clouds blocking out the sun, so we end up becoming early risers and Niall already has the perfect anthem prepped for us: Holding On (6AM). With slightly dissonant chords, injected with strong white noise, creating a real sense of unease in a matter of seconds and the heavily processed, high-pitched vocal expanding on this experimental atmosphere, the rather strange journey continues. While I already kind of love this intro, the real highlight is what follows. Slow-moving, swinging drums act as the foundation for an incredibly catchy melody, whose each and every hit carries multiple waves of dissonance with it. Might sound weird, but it absolutely works. Throughout the drop, Niall effortlessly switches back and forth between this swinging, multi-layered madness and the chords from the buildup, with the occasional fake-out thrown in for good measure, really pushing the levels of dissonance to their limits. I absolutely love it.
With what sounds like a Japanese vocal sample, which has of course been slammed through various processing pipelines, and dissonant piano chords, Niall welcomes us to the next level of existence: Hyperreality. Even more syncopated than before, with little rolly bois chiming in every now and then, and an avalanche of melodies falling over each other, somehow forming a coherent rhythm in the process, this third stop makes you feel like you are living inside the glitchiest but simultaneously also prettiest videogames out there. EP closer Blue Snake takes this glitchy idea and runs with it. You know that sound you get, when you are watching something and your OS crashes on you, that millisecond-long snippet of audio just looping forever? That's what the buildup is like, but somehow melodically pleasing! As if that wasn't enough, we continue by hopping on a fast-paced joyride up and down the bleepy bloopy scales, with seemingly randomly appearing gaps in the melody creating an unpredictable yet well-flowing rhythm that will wrinkle your brain. Not only do we get loads of variation in the same tempo this way, Niall even pumps the brakes in the second half so hard we end up in a Half-time rhythm!
I have been a fan of Niallo's sound from the start basically, but this new direction is such a bold departure from the norm and just so wonderfully strange that I can't help but be even more ecstatic about his future projects than I already was before. Undenia(llo)bly one of the most unique releases of this and probably also previous years.

2. Geostatic - Worth Fighting For / Unpredictable [Celsius Recordings]
Recommended if you like: Sub:liminal, Invadhertz, Alix Perez
While he's slowly gaining a more sizeable audience and thus technically not a Hidden Gem™️ anymore, Geostatic is still incredibly underrated in my eyes. So, let's talk about him a bit!
Straight outta Austria's second largest city and one of its many DnB hotspots Graz, Philipp Hochegger aka Geostatic has been making geological, expressedly non-static waves in the DnB scene for years now. As part of the ehrliches BUM BUM or EBB crew, he is responsible for all sorts of ablaze Dancefloors not just in the area, but also at festivals like Outlook, Break & Lake and LakeSide. Inspired by the likes of Alix Perez, Phil of course also eventually wanted to fill up his playlists with tunes of his own. Around 2020, it was then finally time for the Geostatic project to ascend to the next level, with debut releases on Italian imprint Delta9 and its sister label DLT9. In the same year, Phil also participated in a competition for Graz-based artists, organised by springfestival graz, and managed to become one of the winners, with his track New Horizon even being used to promote the project on national television! After this first, already quite successful year, the Geostatic project swung into the next few ones with quite a lot of momentum, leading to releases on Transparent Audio, where he became a pivotal part of the ensemble, Ekou, Incurzion and, of course, Delta9, and collaborations with fellow Austrian talents Moekel, Screamarts and Anthropic.
After his arguably biggest EPs so far earlier this year, the Power Of Knowledge EP on Transparent Audio, which I kind of regret not covering here, Philipp continues his hot streak with some double trouble action on legendary Dutch label Fokuz's sister label, Celsius Recordings. And that's what we're here to talk about today! For the opener, Worth Fighting For, Phil recruits a certain someone, who has been making some serious moves in the scene lately: Dresden-based Scurrow. Together, the newcomer powerhouses craft a rather lovely roller of a tune, with soft pianos tugging at your heartstrings, a gentle vocal allowing your mind to drift away from the dreadful problems of day-to-day life, and warm bass to soothe the most anxious of souls. Speaking of bass, the flipside Unpredictable shows the polar opposite side of the Geostatic sound: Uncompromisingly huge, goosebump-inducing basslines, with a menacing atmosphere and forward-driving, rolling drums for maximum effect. What remains from the opener, albeit amped up to 11 here, is the soulfulness of it all, thanks to the wonderful vocal sample and its sublime processing.
Magnificent vibes, precise production, simply great! This is your invitation to also jump on the Geostatic hype train. Trust me, you won't regret it.

2023.06.05 10:20 skysurfer109 What to do next?
Had my first L5S1 laminectomy 7yrs and it was great. I thought I was bulletproof again.
Probably lifted too much in the years following and sure enough last July I had another blow out.
Same disc, but much worse. 25mm, couldn’t sit at all, terrible pain. After a cpl of weeks of wanting to die, went in again and had second laminectomy.
Did everything right, hydro pool, physio, 3 months of waiting to get back to the gym. About 5 months after surgery turned to grab something off the bench in garage and felt something “go” in my lower back. After a few weeks of telling myself it couldn’t be what I thought it was I went to GP and got a referral for an MRI, just to check….
Same disc, same side. Only 7mm this time but a much sharper protrusion.
Was pretty depressed at the thought of more time off work so thought I’d have a go at managing it. I had to wait almost 2 months to see neurosurgeon so I had that time to see how far I could get. Hired a personal trainer to do a core orientated back strengthening routine and away I went. 3 gym sessions a week and a Pilates class. Lost about 6kg of fat and got a lot stronger.
I thought I’d beaten it. By the time I saw the Neuro I was fit, pain free and he strongly agreed to just keep doing what I’m doing and only come back if it gets worse.
Fast forward 6 months and last week lower back gets really achy. And few days later the throbbing down the leg is setting in. I guess it’s gotten worse :(
Last time I was at the neurosurgeon he said the next course of action was a fusion. I cannot find a happy fusion story anywhere. I’m reading about disc replacement? Would this be a better option?
I’m a tradie ( lots of bending, lifting etc), I’m very active, gym, snowboarding, cycling. I don’t want to be told to take it easy. I just want a solution where they do their bit ( the surgery) and I’ll take care of the rehab and I know their bit won’t fail.
Any thoughts or suggestions on what to do, what to read up on, course of action.
Thanks for reading.

2023.06.05 10:03 GeoffLeng Top 8 Best Play-to-Earn Web3 Games: June 2023 Edition
| There currently is no shortage of ambitious play-to-earn Web3 games in the industry, with even massive AAA productions entering the market to compete. Every month, we handpick the best Web3 games that are poised to roll out bigger plans in the next few weeks. Everything will be presented to you here in a nutshell. Please note. This article is updated monthly to properly reflect the latest trends and upcoming game events. Top 10 web3 games to try this month The play-and-earn gaming industry moves too fast. Don’t waste time on a game no one is playing anymore. Here’s a list of the best games you gotta try in the next month – in no particular order. 1. Ascenders Simulation Ascenders is one of the most anticipated games of the year and the launch date for the browser game Ascenders Simulation is set for 8 June 2023. Players will soon get to make their first steps in the Ascenders universe. Secure a plot, collect resources and build your base. Ascenders Simulation is just a first step into the game’s universe. Ascenders aims to have a fully decentralized and player-centric economy, where you may earn ACG tokens from playing, and craft or purchase in-game items as NFTs. https://preview.redd.it/e4tp9pc5o54b1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=0dddd2480a67fa0b93c325ee0c2ce5ae5e72e24b 2. Illuvium: Zero Speaking of promising alien-based adventures, let’s move on to Illuvium. This June, the sci-fi fantasy web3 games universe is finally taking Illuvium Zero to Alpha Season One. This simulation game allows you to create and manage your industrial complex in your own Illuvium Land and is already available on PC, Mac and Android mobile devices. With this update, Alpha players will get to experience new gameplay as they discover blueprints that can be, after playing for some time and upgrading specific buildings, minted as in-game assets (skins) to use in all games of the Illuvium universe. https://preview.redd.it/dowkwg8co54b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae18eb6dcdb77cba3e4144020491178337f75904 3. Champions Ascension This month, Jam City’s Ethereum-based AAA fantasy game Champions Ascension is migrating to Polygon. As it’s currently in Pre-Alpha, this means gamers can already download and have a taste of the intense combat games in the ever-expanding open world. The game first launched its NFT collection Prime Eternals, in-game fighters that players can own to play, in February 2022. Now, we’re closer than ever to a better user experience with Polygon’s speed and low transaction costs. So far, you can only play the game on Windows PC, but Champions Ascension will announce when Mac and other platforms are supported. https://preview.redd.it/hmaws8iko54b1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=f7e72d6cc06e20cfdb8439ac47ef02459930f5c0 4. Life Beyond Life Beyond is another shining star in bringing updates to their gameplay to the public. The MMORPG on Polygon is now allowing all agents on planet Dolos’s Hub to try out Solo Combat Trials. What are you waiting for to join and see your name on the leaderboard? While the game has been in active development for almost a year, it has never lacked in bringing its community new updates to the gameplay and lore – or including test gamers in it. The sci-fi metaverse powered by Unreal Engine 5 and blockchain is correctly building its name through quality gameplay and community engagement and remains a top game to check out this month. https://preview.redd.it/15zvjbflo54b1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=662779a61a0cf7be067183d37857728b7f26d0ff 5. Planet Mojo’s Mojo Melee The autochess battler game by Planet Mojo, Mojo Melee, is also worth your attention this June. At the end of May, it released a new roadmap for the upcoming summer months announcing new updates. Including the official launch of its Mojo Melee Season Zero. For 30 days, players will get to try out the mobile version of Mojo Melee and the new Premium Battle Pass. The game is free-to-play and you can already play its browser version. https://preview.redd.it/43u8mwrqo54b1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=09b3de80abba25f8847be7ba53e49f7e66263def 6. The Sandbox The Sandbox is a popular Web3 metaverse where players can own virtual land plots as their own NFTs, and build experiences on them for people to enjoy. While it offers a variety of benefits to landowners, including access to special events and the ability to join a limited SAND staking pool, most players don’t even own land yet. We enter the month with the Korean wave swapping the metaverse with the Hallyu Rising Raffle and LAND Sale. This is the second K-verse LAND Sale to come to The Sandbox, the first one in partnership with big Korean brands and helped the game increase prominence in the very relevant to the industry Asian audiences. As stated by the company, over 317 thousand people joined the game in the first K-verse event, with an average playtime per user of 1h33min. Want to see what this is all about? Go check out The Sandbox in June. https://preview.redd.it/7uzdlwino54b1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=931d33b6393b23729bfdd0f6eecbff53efdda2f0 7. This month, the medieval strategy game continues developing with its Blocklords Community Beta, rewarding loyal early adopters with fun and games – literally. This year, the game has moved on to integrate with Immutable X and has been hyped again with its in-game NFT collection Blocklords Banners. 2023.06.05 09:52 ScribblingFox98 The Survivor Becomes a Dungeon (Chapter 79)
First Vitmori POV Work had begun almost immediately as Trisha got the forge going, talking with Heptio as she started going through the motions. It was clear to me that she was already off in her own little world. Rita had lingered to watch the work for a moment, but I could tell she was bored of this before long and began making her way out of the forge. Reyvyre had stood around for a little while longer before also making her way out, though she waved for me to follow; seeing no reason not to, I joined her and fell in step beside her. "So, how does your avatar feel? Trisha and Rita mentioned you battled with Reonim." She asked as she glanced over at me; I could see and feel her eyes wandering my body, though I could sense it was strictly analytical as she reviewed her handiwork.
"Hmm... Well, I lost, for one." I mentioned with a bit of a smile and shrugging a bit. "Reaction time wasn't as fast as my original body, though it was fast enough. I think I figured out a hint in using mana to enhance my physical capability, but I was unable to maintain my boosted running speed. My overall physical capabilities were good despite my low weight, but how heavy I am doesn't really matter to me. If I do need more weight, I'm sure I can manage with some kind of metal or stone weights."
Reyvyre's intrigue and curiosity were palpable as I spoke, I could sense that she wanted to take down notes, but she realized that she forgot her notepad back at the longhouse; focusing back on me, she nodded intently at my words before speaking up. "It sounds a lot like the delay that people with artificial limbs experience. The suggested remedy for that is to just use the limb as much as you can... So I suppose it's only a matter of time until your avatar feels natural." She suggested as she absently ran her fingers through her hair. "As for making use of your mana heart, I'm afraid I don't have much experience in actively using it. The only benefits I truly make use of are the ones that maintain my body with the reduced need to eat, sleep and drink. Though I'm sure Reonim could advise you." She said before looking unsure as she tilted her side to side a bit. "Well... He's knowledgable and able to explain things easily enough, but he hasn't shown much talent in actually teaching." She admitted with a little shrug.
"Well, how common are mana hearts and magic users?" Now that I'm really thinking about it, the only people I've seen with mana hearts were mostly those in my service, aside from the drakewardens, Virtisa, Jaz, Lanzak, and Sylvia. Isaak looked like he had some glittering lights around his heart, but he had not actually developed one yet. Even Dhalia only had a mana heart; it wasn't even that impressive.
Reyvyre seemed to need a moment for that, I could feel her mind swirling with information as she considered my question. "One in ten people naturally develop mana hearts, one in twenty will develop their mana hearts to effectively use in combat at Reonim's level, and one in forty are able to cultivate their mana hearts to develop a single mana ring." She explained before looking over at me. "And that is only considering the short-lived races." She mentioned as she looked back out at the treeline below us. "You won't encounter many as powerful as yourself or even as powerful as I am, but there are many ways to develop mana hearts and mana rings, so there will be more than the predicted amount of those with mana hearts here and there, especially in the service of nobles, affluent merchants, among the guilds, or the various academies." She explained as she listed them out on her fingers.
"I see. Well, maybe I'll see for myself once my armor and equipment are ready. I was planning on joining Basti in visiting the Hegemony and investigating the trafficking on their side of things." I decided to mention it as we neared the base of my mountain.
I could feel Reyvyre's look at me curiously at that comment. "Are you sure you're up for it? I mean no offense, but this world is nothing like yours, I just don't want you to be taken advantage of or misled." She expressed sincere worry and concern plainly on her face as she watched me.
I couldn't help but be amused by that as I returned her look with a quirked brow. "You may be four times older than me, but I'm still a grown man capable of caring for myself. People will still be people, no matter where they are from. As long as they can still be swayed by words, actions, kindness, or violence; I should be fine wherever I end up." I was half joking with that comment, but as far as I've seen with the people in the haven, even if they look different, they're still just people like I used to know.
I could sense Reyvyre's uncertainty, though she soon accepted my words and decided to move on to the next topic as we got down into the woods. "Well, if you're going on a trip, would you mind if I took Reonim and visited my clan?" She asked curiously, I could tell she wanted to go no matter what I said, though she also felt I wouldn't say no to something like that, and she wouldn't be wrong.
"Leaving so soon? You haven't even been back for a full week." I mused, deciding to pry just a little bit before letting her do what she wanted.
Reyvyre seemed to catch on to what I was after and obliged with a bit of a smile. "Well, I need to go report my status as possibly the youngest elven mage to etch their fourth ring of mana around their heart." She enthused proudly, though she then looked rather sheepish as she scratched the back of her head. "It's also been a decade since I last reported back, and I'm one of fifteen elves to actually wander beyond my clan borders, so I should probably inform them of the events of the world sooner rather than later." She chuckled a little bit before looking back at me. "If it's okay with you, I'd like to return the remains of the elf we found in Lictdren's chamber to my people, the armor she wore was a lost treasure for the elven people, and returning it should do well to endear the clan to you and possibly the Empire, thanks to your alliance with them." She explained, the anticipation clear in her eyes about the possibilities.
"Just admit it, you have a hard time staying in one place, don't you?" I tease gently before smirking a bit. "Though I do appreciate you going out of your way to find me more friends in this world." I said as I looked over at her, glancing at my mark around her throat. "Sure, go for it, just let me do this real quick." I mentioned as I stepped closer, reaching out and gently poking her neck. I could feel her jolt with surprise, though she remained still as her mind hummed with curiosity at what I'm doing. To be honest, I'm not even sure what I'm doing, but I focus as I trail my finger from her neck, down to her shoulder and pull away. My mark had seamlessly moved away from being so clearly distinct on her neck, down to her shoulder where most other people tend to have it. "There... Sorry if that was uncomfortable." I said as I flashed a small smile. "But my mark looked too much like a collar on you, and that wasn't sitting right with me." I explained as I rubbed the back of my head. I'm not sure why I did this right now, but it felt right.
Reyvyre looked surprised to say the least, absently touching her neck and swallowing. I could sense a flurry of emotions coursing through her mind, but overall I could feel that the collar-like mark did bother her, at least in the corner of her mind when she saw others with my mark in more discrete places. After a moment, she smiled at me as she looked up into my eyes. "Thank you Vitmori, for your help and your permission." She says while looking away, still absently touching her neck as she continues on our way back to the Haven. Though as we drew closer, she glanced back at me and flashed a smile. "Say... How about I show you some of the basics of magic? I'm sure you'll have a handle on it in no time." She mentioned with a grin.
"That sounds good to me." I reply with a bob of my head.
Reyvyre nodded in return before looking away. "Give me some time to set things up, I'll come get you in a little bit." She said as she stepped away and went off in a different direction than the Haven.
I watched her go for a couple of moments, though I made my way over to the clearing soon enough as I walked around. Most people are working on various things, though I do see a cluster of people working around a long, stripping it of bark using the new tools I had given them. I make my way over, spotting a beaverkin man snacking on some bark chips as he seemingly takes a break while Lanzak leads the group now. "You are Woody, right?" I ask, not entirely sure of their name since it felt a little on the nose.
The beaverkin man jumped a little with surprise, having been lost in thought while enjoying his snack. Looking over at me, he offers a grin before standing as he tucked the remaining wood chips he had into his pocket, all while doing his best to chew what he had in his mouth before swallowing and clearing his throat. "Guilty as charged." He expressed cheerfully as he stepped up to me. "Is there anything I could help you with?" He asked as he absently wiped at something at the edge of his lips.
"Yeah, Trisha mentioned that you would be making my bow and arrows for me, I just wanted to know if there's anything I can help with to get you started?" I explain as I glance over at the work they're already doing.
Woody looked thoughtful, his beaver tail tapping almost absently against the dirt behind him. "I know that the Shepherd Zasutir said that we should be doing work on our own so as to not burden you... However, if you are offering your help in exchange for something, then I suppose we are not burdening you anymore and this is just an exchange of service." He reasoned with a shrewd smile before continuing. "We need much more wood than we are able to process ourselves at the rate we're going. Between firewood and construction materials, we need to get a lot of this set up and drying if we want to make any considerable progress on construction after winter has passed." He explained as his tail tapped at the dirt again. "Now, I did hear those drakewardens were planning on coming in with builders and supplies in the next couple of weeks, but wood is a long-term commodity that has lots of uses." He explained, now all business, though even as he spoke, he reached into his pocket and popped a wood chip into his mouth every now and then. "If you don't mind, could you use some of that dungeon magic of yours to take down twenty trees for us?"
"Only twenty trees?" I asked before chuckling a bit. I certainly don't mind the work, and I do have a lot more mana to work with than I had several weeks ago. Plus, Woody did have a point, this sort of stuff is no longer a one-sided charity of giving them whatever they need, they're doing stuff for me now and I'm working to earn it. Even if I think twenty trees don't exactly equate to a bow and arrows.
Woody nodded as he chewed on some more bark. "Yep, for now. It's not like we're gonna stop cutting down more trees, though we won't be as rushed if you can do this for us... And as impressive as the longhouse you made is, what we need now are simple buildings for us to grow into before we improve on them later." He explained as he wiped his lips absently. "All we need to do is build the frames and floors of buildings, then I can make some bricks with clay and dry grass to fill out the rest." He said while nodding at his own words.
"I see, so how am I gonna break these trees down, and where do you want them?" I asked while looking over at the treeline and considering what trees to take down.
Woody hummed thoughtfully at that. "Well you can put the wood behind the longhouse, that's where we have been putting it up till now." He mentioned before looking back up at me. "If you could break down four trees into manageable logs for firewood, eight trees into planks, and the remaining eight trees into squared posts for the frames." He listed out before snapping his fingers as he considered something else. "If it's not too much trouble, could you also pile up all the tree branches next to the wood, and as for the bark..." He trailed off, in the middle of biting down on another chip from his pocket, he pulled it away before clearing his throat. "Could you set up the bark near the fireplace, Virtisa has been asking for some to make some kind of medicine and other stuff... Apparently, it's got some sort of stuff and such to make lots of things and a few medicines." He explained before shrugging as he finally popped the piece of bark he had in his hand and chewed. "I just think it tastes good." He mused with a smile.
I chuckled a little bit at his last comment before rubbing the back of my head and looking back to the tree line. "Sure, I'll see what I can do." With that, I step away towards the treeline, Woody looking to the others and getting back to processing the current log they were working on. It doesn't take long to go around and gather all the trees since I'm able to take everything from the leave to the roots all at once. The only thing I had to actually take my time on was making sure the trees I collected were unoccupied and then taking a moment to fill the new hole with dirt so nobody fell in and got hurt.
It was actually on my way back when I encountered Sylvia, who smiled as she spotted me and made her way over. "I heard from Woody you were helping gather trees for us, could you make sure some of that bark comes my way? I need it if I want to start making the leather for your equipment." She explained as she walked with me.
"Of course, do you think you'll have it ready anytime soon?" I ask as we start heading back to the clearing around the longhouse. Though at that, I could sense some kind of unease coming from Sylvia as she slowed her pace to stare at me.
"How... How soon are you thinking?" She asked before picking up the pace to walk by my side again.
I look over at her and offer a shrug. "Sometime next week, once I have some weapons and clothes, I'll start walking toward the Hegemony and..." But before I could continue, Sylvia started to chuckle before full-on belly laughing at me as she wiped at some non-existent tears, looking over at me and laughing some more as she was soon doubled over at my expense. To say I was a little annoyed would be accurate, but moreover, I was just confused by her reaction.
It took almost a full minute before she managed to get ahold of herself, even then she was still snickering as she placed a hand over her mouth before speaking up. "You're such a silly human... I don't know how they did things in your world, but proper leather for armor takes at least two months to be armor grade, and that's not even considering all the other prep work to get it done." She was panting, taking slow breaths as she did her best to compose herself, though she still turned red from the strain of not laughing at me each time she looked back up at me, having to physically place her hand over her mouth to do so. "Forget about the leather, I'll make you some hide boots and gloves and get with Miriam to see what we can do for some quick and sturdy armor, just leave it to me Vitmori." She mused, smirking at my expense as she smacked my lower back a couple of times before walking off.
Well... There goes my self esteem. I suppose the only experience I have is the stuff I scavenged that was already put together, or from armorers who already had a supply of treated leather ready to be committed to make armor per request. To get my mind off that blunder, I set to work sorting out the wood into the requests Woody made for me. I end up sitting cross legged in the dirt and closing my eyes in order to focus on the details of the work; I can feel the mana be expended, and while it does consume more mana than when I usually interact with things in the vacuum of my storage, and I can't help but be pleasantly surprised that I'm even able to do this much in this avatar; that is being able to visualize my storage space in the same abstract nature I used to before I had a body.
Before long, all the wood has been sorted out in neat piles behind the longhouse and I go over by the outdoor fireplace to find Virtisa getting a massive pot of water to boil over an open flane, the herbalist lizardkin flashing a fanged smile at me as she pokes at the fire with a stick, Sekha mrowling politely as she sits besides Virtisa, but doesn't move from her place as she watched intently. "Hello Vitmori, I take it that you have the bark Woody asked you to collect for me?" She asked, appearing to be content with Sekha sitting in her lap, which was a huge improvent from when I last saw her hurriedly rushing out of my medbay after seeing what I had done to Dread, her head full of anxiety and doubts.
"Yeah, where should I leave them, there's a lot ya know." I mentioned as I make my way closer, reaching out and gently doting on Sekha by scritching her throat before stepping away to give Virtisa her space.
I could see her eyes wander as she looked around before pointing at a spot a couple feet away from her. "If you could leave them there, that would be great, thanks." She said as she brought her hand back and down on Sekha's back as she stroked the blue cub's fur.
I can't help but feel she's underestimating just how much tree bark I collected, in the end I settle with just dropping off a good thirty pounds of bark, and with that I could sense that Virtisa wasn't expecting nearly that much. "Perfect, I'll get to work refining all of this." She said pleasantly, she didn't visibly betray her surprise though, instead bobbing her head as she went back to prodding the flames underneath the pot.
Before I could get into anything else, Reyvyre came into the clearing and waved me over, her hands and knees covered in dirt. Making my way over, I look her up and down before quirking a brow with curiosity. "I see you've been playing around in the dirt." I mused kindly.
Reyvyre, for her part, looks confused for more than a few seconds before remembering something and looking at herself. She chuckled a bit as she scratched the back of her neck. "Yeah about that... Well it's better if I just show you." She said with a small smile before leading me out of the clearing. We walk for a few minutes before coming across a smaller clearing, the smell of fresh cut grass in the air as I see the results of Reyvyre's efforts. In the middle of the clearing was a magic circle with a variety of runes strewn all over the place, while I can read a few of the things here and there, I'm not too sure about the specifics, though I sense Reyvyre is more than ready to explain everything in just a moment as she beckoned me to come to the middle of the circle. "Kneel down here, we're gonna check your affinities." She mentioned, moving to get out of the circle while stepping carefully between the lines and runes.
Watching how she walked, I made sure to follow her example, crossing into the magic circle as I knelt down in the middle. "My affinities?" I parrot curiously. I mean I knew I had three aspects, but I don't know if it's the same thing she's talking about.
"Yeah, we're gonna see what magics you have the greatest connection to, the base roots of which are the primal elements found in the world. Things like fire, water, earth, and air among other things." She explained eagerly as she pointed to the four big circles within the magic circle before gesturing to the numerous smaller circles. "Beyond those, there are other magics which are more esoteric beyond the base elements. From there I can see how to best guide and instruct you on the branches of magics that come easiest for you." She said as she sat down cross legged in the grass. "Go on, reach out and run your mana through the magical circle, I'll make sure everything stays stable and review the results." She mentioned, eager anticipation just radiating from her like a ball of light. I look around myself for another moment before following her instructions, closing my eyes as I reach out with my mana. I can feel things happening around me, my mana pulsing and resonating as I meet Reyvyre's mana in the magical circle. "Wow..." Is all she says as I go to open my eyes.

2023.06.05 09:31 Mediocre-Interview52 The Experiences of my father as an EX Convict
Part 1
My father spent 14 years locked behind the thick steel doors of the Barry Telford State Penitentiary located right outside Texarkana, Texas. Recently I took an interest in the darker events that have happened to various family members and sat down to ask him if he had any chilling stories or experiences he could share about his time he spent incarcerated, anything that he hadn’t shared with me before.
I was both pleased and horrified as for the next two hours he divulged some truly chilling and grotesque tales. I will just let you know now that some of these stories are graphic and if you have a weak stomach I’d advise you not to read further. For the rest of you, I won’t sparse details and I’ll lay them out exactly as he laid them out to me.
My dad was sent to the Telford unit a few months after his 21st birthday, sentenced to 20 years for armed robbery. It is a maximum security prison designed to mostly hold suspected gang members and violent criminals.
“The first day is a total shock to your system. You are stripped and cavity searched coming in and out of every room, you have a bed time, you are timed at meals, and thrown into a cell with 3 other inmates telling you the house rules and which bunk is yours. Then laying in bed that first night… that’s when it hits you that this is home, that this is your life now. Out of anything I can recall, that feeling of helplessness and hopelessness, that loss of freedom, that’s the scariest part of prison.”
He told me that as the months pass you get used to your routine, you start to need the structure, even crave it. He said he decided to make the best of it, learn as many skills as he could, and stay as busy as possible. One of his vocational skills he picked up was plumbing, and soon became the in house plumber for ‘A’ building.
Now the way the prison is set up is that there is an A-Building and a B-Building. Inside each building there are 10 cell houses, each cell house contains 12 cells that can hold anywhere from 1 to 4 inmates each. In the middle of each cell house is the Rec Room where the cells all open up to and this is where the inmates spend most of their free time.
In addition to the cell houses each building also contains several solitary wings, labeled from ‘A-Seg’ to ‘Z-Seg’.
“When I first got there, everyone kept joking that if I stepped out of line the guards would send me to ‘M-Seg.’ One day I asked a buddy, who had been locked up for 15 years already when I got there, why people kept talking about ‘M-Seg’ and not any of the other seg wings.”
“Look,” his buddy told him, “people who have extended stays in M just don’t come back the same, some don’t come back at all. The guards know it, that’s why they always fill M last, or put new guys there who they think might be troublemakers. A night in M and you’ll straighten your act up real quick. I’ve never been there myself, but I talked to a couple inmates who have and they both told me the same thing, something evil lives in that place.” So like I said, my dad had become the on call plumber for A-Building. He said it was about 6 months into the job when he had his first encounter with M-Seg.
“Whenever a toilet was stopped up or something was leaking the guards would just knock on my door and lead me to the problem. It was an around the clock type of thing, I didn’t mind though, any excuse to get out of the cell was fine by me. Plus you get your own cell since you’d be coming in and out at all hours of the night and day so that was a nice perk as well. Anyway, one night there is a knock on my door and the guard tell me to, ‘get dressed Rashell, we need you in seg.’ I get up, the guard opens my door and we start heading down to seg.”
“It’s a real mess down there, I’ve seen a lot of shit in my day but this is crazy…” the guard told my dad as he led him down the connecting corridors, “just make sure you wear your gloves and booties, Rashell.”
My dad was curious and asked the guard what had happened.
“Looney-toon on suicide watch, I guess somehow must’ve snuck in a piece of metal. Look, I shouldn’t tell you this but I don’t want you to be surprised when you get in there. ‘Crazy’ cut off his own genitals. He threw his testicles out on the run, but we can’t find his penis, and that’s where you come in.”
When they reached their destination there was another guard standing outside with an inmate holding a mop waiting to clean up after my dad was finished. My dad said when they opened the door to M-Seg it was almost hauntingly dark, four or five dim overhead lights ran down the hallway but seemed to act more like spotlights and gave off practically no ambient light. He said there was a trail of blood leading towards the back of the corridor. Each seg block had 14 cells with solid steel doors. Each door had a small window that could be opened and closed from the outside and a tray slit which the guy must’ve used to toss his testicles out. As he got closer he could see that blood was running out from a cell towards the end of the block through a small gap under the door.
“Open 13,” the guard yelled to another guard behind a glass window controlling the electronic locks.
“When I went in to that cell I couldn’t believe how much blood there was. It was on the walls and the ceiling, the entire mattress pad was doused in it… The toilet was flooded up to the brim and it looked like it was filled with blood. I used a cup to transfer the bloody water into buckets until I could start to see the silhouette of something under the water. I could see a big wad of toilet paper so I pulled it out and sat it on the floor. I could tell something was inside it. As I started to slowly unravel the wad, all of a sudden I started hearing this noise coming from the air vents, ‘tunk tunk tunk,’ it sounded like someone crawling or trying to sneak through them almost, I didn’t think much of it at the time but I’ll get back to that later. Anyway, I unroll the paper and sure enough the guy’s pecker was right there.”
The guard took it and dropped it in a bag of ice and after making sure the toilet flushed he started leading my dad back to the entrance of M Seg.
“When we got down the hall waiting for the exit door to open all the lights went out.”
“Shit,” muttered the guard, “against the wall inmate.”
“I stood back against the wall,” my dad continued, “and as the guards tried to figure out what was going on I heard that noise in the vents again. It was coming from the cell I had just come out of,
“‘tunk tunk tunk…’
“I didn’t know what it was but it gave me this awful feeling, and as I was standing there I realized it was getting louder and faster and closer to me.
“‘tunk… tunk…. tunk, tunk, TUNK, TUNK, TUNK.’
“It sounded like whatever was in that vent was now in a dead sprint right at us, the guard was trying to ignore it but I could tell he heard it too because he kept looking back over his shoulder and started yelling at the guard behind the glass.
“‘Hey! Hey!’ -TUNK, TUNK, TUNK- ‘Hurry up and get this fucking door open!’ -TUNK, TUNK, TUNK-
“Just as the noise in the vent got up to us, the lights came back on and it went silent. The door opened up and the guard got us out of there as fast as he could. A few days later I saw the inmate who was waiting on janitor duty that night and asked him if he had seen anything. He told me he saw them wheel a guy covered in blood out on a stretcher and that he was screaming about a ‘man in the vents’ and that the man had told him to do it.”
My dad also asked him if he had heard anything in the vents while he was mopping up, but he told my dad he didn’t hear anything, but that he found the metal the man from 13 had used to cut himself.
“It was buried in a pool of blood,” the guy said, “damnedest thing too, looked like a piece of shrapnel cut out from air duct metal.”
The next story my dad shared with me is more graphic and scary in the sense of what human beings are capable of.
“We get new guys that think they are going to be bad asses all the time. Sometimes it works out for them and other times it doesn’t. There were lots of serious gangs in BTU, and sometimes you get a guy who comes in from a local street gang that doesn’t really comprehend how violent some of these big gangs are. It’s like they are ‘playing’ gang to look cool, like kids play cops and robbers, the problem is that they think other people are just ‘playing’ gang too or something.
“Anyway we had this one guy, Ricky, come in and everyone but him knew it was going to end badly for him. He was this young Hispanic guy, and he thought his small town gang was a direct rival to another Hispanic gang, MS-13. He would curse out and disrespect them in front of everyone at chow time and in the halls, and scream at their members who’d pass his cell.
“He’d only been there a week, some of the elders tried telling him he needed to calm down before he got hurt but Ricky was hard headed and just wouldn’t hear it.
“Well one day during dinner the chow hall was quiet and Ricky was nowhere to be seen. My table was dismissed first and as we made our way back to our cell house we turned the corner to see Ricky covered in blood stumbling towards us, arms wrapped around his stomach.
“He was completely naked, big patches of his skin cut from his body where his tattoos had been. Both of his eyes were popped out from their sockets and were just dangling towards the ground. The side of his head was caved in where they had stomped his skull until his eyes came out. As he came closer I could see he was holding his intestines in his hands.
“The worst part to me is that he hadn’t died during it, that he was conscious for every blow and every cut… He just hobbled up the hall in our directions crying and asking,
“‘Why can’t I look up? Why can’t I look up?’
“He collapsed and passed out a few seconds later, and died right there at our feet. They never found out who did it…”
Alright I’ll share one more story my dad shared with me I found kind of creepy, as this is getting pretty long.
About seven years into his stint in prison my dad said through a series of circumstances he ended up having to stay the night in M-Seg. The A-Building was being renovated and repaired and as a result they were sending the inmates to stay in seg in waves.
Well it had been years since my dad had been to the rarely used M-seg and he had convinced himself that he was just hearing things that night. They were leading prisoners out one cell at a time and transferring them to the various seg blocks. My dad’s cell was on the end and he had his cell to himself so when they transferred him he wasn’t accompanied by any other inmates. To his dismay all the seg blocks had been filled, except for M, that is.
They led him down to the end of M and opened the door to 14, which was right next to the cell the man had cut himself in all those years ago.
“Everything was fine until lights out. It was really dark in there, each cell has a little night light thing above the toilet but it’s not enough to see anything or read or write. Anyway it was so dark I figured the only thing I could do was go to sleep. But all night I kept hearing the guy in the cell next to me talking to himself. The way the cells are set up the vents carry any little noise to the adjoining cells. The vent themselves are located right at the foot of the little cots in each cell. People would sit next to them to communicate and pass time during stints in solitary but this guy wasn’t talking to me he was like he was talking to himself and it was starting to really wear on my nerves. I banged on the vent and told him to keep it down but he just kept talking in this whispery voice, and it sounded like he was chanting the same thing over and over but I couldn’t make out what he was saying. I put my ear up to the vent to try and see what he was saying and my hairs stood up on the back of my head when I swear god I felt his breath in my ear as clear as day I heard him whispering,
“‘I remember you, I remember you, I remember you.’ in this frantic melodic tune.
“‘Well you won’t remember anything when I bash your head in if you don’t keep it down in there,’ I told him.
“All of a sudden his voice got a little louder and angrier in tone,
“‘I’ll slit your throat, I’ll slit your throat, I’ll slit your throat.’
“I was a little unnerved but I’ve heard a lot worse after so many years in prison so I just told him to fuck off and decided I’d let the guards deal with it in the morning. Well morning came and when the guard brought me my breakfast I told him if he didn’t do something about the guy keeping me up all night in 13 that I would.
“‘What are you talking about Rashell? You are the only person in M seg,’ the guard told me as chills ran down my spine.
“That night as soon as the light went out the whispers started again, and this time I was petrified.
“‘I’ll slit your throat. I’ll slit your throat. I’ll slit your throat…’
“The whispers were more aggressive this time, clearer too. Then all of a sudden they went from whispers to deep guttural screams,
“‘I’LL SLIT YOUR THROAT! I’LL SLIT YOUR THROAT! I’LL SLIT YOUR FUCKING THROAT!’
It scared me so bad I fell out of my cot and scooted on the floor until I felt my back hit the wall opposing the air vent. As my eyes came into focus in absolute horror I saw the silhouette of a head directly inside the vent. I couldn’t make out it’s features but I see it’s eyes. They were full of hatred and rage and they were locked right into me. Fast and louder he just continued screaming that he’d slit my throat, as the vent casing started to shake. Now the vents go straight up in a duct to a main duct then back down to the next cell through another duct, so you can’t see into your neighbor’s cell from your cell. That meant whatever this… thing… was, it was right inside my vent… I jumped up and banged on the steel door as hard as I could telling for a guard.
“‘Help! Help! Somebody!’
“A guard came running down the hall and as soon as he slid the door window open the vent went silent.
“‘You gotta get me out of here, something is in the vents,’ I pleaded.
“To my surprise the guard didn’t protest my request. Instead he just told me to hang tight for a second and then clicked his radio and said,
“‘Need an open cell for a transfer from M seg,’ he paused for a second then leaned back into his radio and simply said, ‘he’s back.’
“He opened the door and led me down the corridor and as they did the whole time we were followed by that familiar sound in the vents,
“‘Tunk… tunk… tunk…’
“I’ve seen and heard a lot in my years, not a lot gets under my skin, but I was shaking like a leaf the whole way out of M-seg… I don’t think I took a breath until I walked out the block doors and heard them shut behind me. I finally worked up the nerve to ask that guard what the hell was in those vents.
“‘I don’t know, Rashell. Warden’ll tell you there’s nothing in those vents. All I can tell you is that whatever it is, it’s evil.’”

2023.06.05 07:56 Compiled-Python-6184 WISDOM TEETH - ULTIMATE SURVIVAL GUIDE
# INTRODUCTION 🏡
Hi everybody. Like you, I was very very anxious about the idea of removing my wisdom teeth. I did a lot — and I mean a lot — of research beforehand and during my entire journey. I am now 9 days post OP, and thought it would be a great idea to compile all my notes 📝
# CHOOSING YOUR NUMB 💉
As you might know, wisdom teeth extraction involves slicing your gums open in order to extract the wisdom tooth, buried below the gums. Sometimes, if your wisdom tooth is emerged, surgeons will be able to just pull it out without having to do any incisions. Nevertheless, you still need some type of numbing to block the pain, usually called **anesthesia**
There are two types of anesthesia you may choose from for this procedure:
- **General Anesthesia** is the most common form of numbing anesthetic used to prevent patients from feeling pain. In this form of anesthesia, you will be injected in the arm (vein) and will be knocked out cold temporarily. The dosage depends on how hard your wisdom teeth are to take out. Some will need to be asleep for 30 mins while others an hour. Surgeons will monitor your heart rate, oxygen, and pulse using an external machine.
- **Local Anesthesia** is the other form of numbing anesthetic used. Though less common than General, local is also a good option and is what I used personally. During local anesthesia, you are completely awake. Surgeons will inject anesthetics directly into your gums, and you will feel the sting almost identical to the flu shot but on your gums. Sometimes, surgeons will pre-numb your mouth using a numbing cream or numbing spray. Because you are awake during the procedure, you will feel *pressure* during the wisdom teeth extraction ie you will feel the dentist pulling your wisdom tooth out. There will be no pain besides the initial injection/sting of the anesthesia
*a quick note on brain~stuff 🧠* sometimes, surgeons can provide laughing-gas (Nitrous Oxide) which can make you feel a bit *happier* and less stressed about your current situation. Likewise, waking up from general anesthetia provides a similar dazzy effect. A FAQ is “will x make me admit my secrets?” Yes and no. It depends on who you are and how you react to the side effects. Some people will spill secrets and some will just laugh and have no idea what is going on. It’s important to note that surgeons understand this, and feel free to have your significant other sit in another room and explain why.
# BEFORE THE PROCEDURE ⏰
Fast for 8 hours before the surgery. No liquids or foods 8 hours especially if you are using general anesthetic for the procedure. Even if you are not using general anesthesia, it’s a good idea to fast so that you don’t accidentally gag and the food comes up… ew!
If you are using general anesthesia, it is required you have a friend or family member stay with you and be able to drive you home. Even if you are using local anesthesia, you should still prepare a ride just in case the pain becomes unbearable afterwards.
*A quick note on pineapples 🍍* a lot of people on Tik tok suggest drinking loads of pineapple juice to help with healing after the surgery because of a naturally occurring chemical known as bromelain in pineapples that helps inflammation. There hasn’t been enough research into this, but I say it doesn’t hurt to try. There’s no pain in drinking a glass of pineapple juice 8 hours the surgery (unless you wanna cut on sugars)
# AFTERCARE 🦷
You finished surgery. Great! Now comes the greatest challenge, avoiding dry socket and healing completely
## WHAT IS DRY SOCKET 🌵
After you get your wisdom teeth removed, there will be a hole where they once were. This hole will bleed for the first 5-8 hours and is normal to ooze blood. Eventually, a **blood clot** will grow over this hole and stops bleeding. **YOUR GOAL IS TO KEEP THIS INTACT IN ALL COSTS**. If the blood clot is dislodged you will get a painful condition known as dry socket. This is when the blood clot was dislodged (removed) and now the hole is wide open with the nerves exposed. It is a risk from day 3 - day 10, with high risk being from day 3-5
## HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE DRY SOCKET 😨
Dry socket is hard to spot, so it is mainly diagnosed with symptoms. The most obvious sign is if you see a blood clot outside your mouth. As in you’re brushing teeth and suddenly a massive blood clot (looks like strawberry jam) falls off into the sink. If you happen to swallow this clot unknowingly, here’s other symptoms: extreme, throbbing pain all throughout the jaw and even extending to the temples, more bleeding even past day 1
# HOW TO AVOID DRY SOCKET 🧘♀️
**NO SUCTION** No spitting, sucking, straws, kissing, blowing nose, vacuuming chip crumbs with your mouth literally whatever causes suction for the first **TWO WEEKS**
Why? Suction can pull the blood clot from the hole. Simple.
Other tips: don’t work out or do anything to raise blood pressure for first two weeks. This can affect blood formation and slow healing. Also, when gargling don’t swirl the liquid (it might catch the clot) instead, tilt your head and open mouth simply when ready to discard water.
# EXTRACTION SITE CARE 🩹
For the first hour - 2 hours, bite on the gauze to stop bleeding. You can also use a teabag (non emptied), the tea leaves have medicinal anti bleeding properties. Do not brush or rinse mouth for first 24-48 hours. Don’t wanna mess with extraction site. Apply ice on your cheeks to reduce face puffiness.
Follow medication instructions. Use the chlorohexidine mixture if provided according to instructions. Set alarms for your antibiotics if given.
Sleep a lot. The more you sleep, the more your body has time to repair repair repair!
After 2-3 days, resume light brushing and flossing. Keep doing salt water or chlorohexidine rinses as instructed. Keep taking antibiotics. Use a curved syringe to flush extraction site and get rid of food particles.
# WHAT TO EAT 🍦
The ultimate goal is to let the extraction site heal. Avoid spicy foods (capsaicin can irritate gums), grains, crunchy food, chewy foods, or anything that can easily get stuck in the sockets or cause you discomfort and chewing. Avoid extremely hot things. I recommend:
- ice cream
- smoothies (NO STAW)
- bananas
- pancakes
- overcooked (soft) pasta
- **WARM NOT HOT** soups
- yogurt
- milkshakes (NO STRAW)
After the week one mark, you can pick up whatever you feel comfortable doing that at that point JUST NO STRAW/SUCTION UNTIL WEEK 2.
On that note, drink everything normally as if in a regular cup. Avoid straws.
# I GOT DRY SOCKET. WHAT NOW
Call your surgeon immediately. They will fill the holes with medicine. And follow the how to avoid dry socket steps.
# AFTER WEEK 1
You made it through the hardest part! Now, you’ve likely finished your antibiotics and no longer need to do chlorohexidine rinses. Still rinse your mouth after meals with salt water or use the syringe to flush your food. You can try going back to regular diet but no suction still. The risk of dry socket is basically close to 0 at this point, but be safe by avoiding straws until after week 2
# AFTER WEEK 2
Straws are welcome back! So is working out and basically having everything you used to have. Irrigate and flush the holes or rinse until the hole is completely closed which can take about three weeks to a 2 month depending on how fast your body heals. But at week 2 is when you’re pretty much safe from dry socket
# APPENDIX
## Irrigation
Sometimes, patients are given a curved syringe that they can fill with salt water. Aim directly at the hole and flush. You should see food particles coming out. You do not need to flush the top holes as gravity naturally lets the food fall.
## STITCHES/SUTURES
Sometimes, surgeons stitch the holes closed for better healing. If that’s the case then you don’t need to worry about irrigation. The stitches will usually dissolve or fall out by day 7. If not, call your oral surgeon and ask if they can remove it.
### My stitches fell out on accident too early
No worries! Just treat the site as if you never got stitches. So flush the site and take extra care avoiding straws and suction
Keep taking care of the site by gargling and flushing it until the holes have fully closed (3 weeks - 2 months) et voila!
# GRANULATION TISSUE
Do you see a pale white substance attached to tissue on your site? That’s a good sign and leave it alone that is granulation tissue or recovery tissue. After about three weeks the granulation tissue will become pink and eventually become one with your gums. If you see granulation tissue on neighboring teeth or not the extraction site do not panick. Just leave it alone as it will eventually fade into your gums anyways
# CONGRATS 🎉
You did it :)

2023.06.05 07:28 Noghbuddy Impromptu Test Run
I got a little bored and drunk. Then this happened. Just a bit of dumb action. I could try and spin this as me improving my ability to write more action oriented scenes, but well. Yeah, drunk and bored. Enjoy and tell me what you think.
CW: Sweet sweet excessive violence
----------
The little skiff drifted lazily along the asteroid belt. In a backwater system, free from prying eyes, the crew had ample time and space to test their newest toy. The ursdain in the pilot’s seat adjusted a couple controls before settling back in his chair. His avian co-pilot was observing the rest of the crew on the security feed.
“What is he doing?”
The ursdain leaned over, “Practicing?”
The avian’s half lidded stare was the only response.
In the cargo bay were the skiff’s other three occupants. A rather burly male human with brown skin and a mostly shaved head was yanking his tomahawk back out of the wooden board he had hung up on the wall. He walked back a few paces before turning and hurling it back at the target.
“Do you have to do that right now?” asked the exacerbated vulptan.
“Nope.” He responded while lining up his next throw.
“Just let him. If he doesn’t keep busy, he’ll keep trying to add ‘modifications.” The red-headed human female interjected while elbow deep in their prototype.
“You’re just jealous of my brilliance.”
“Sure. We’ll call it that.”
Meanwhile as the ursdain began to ponder his next meal a red blip flashed on his display followed by a sharp claxon. He slammed the red alert, “Thakt, we got company!”
The avian was already attempting to jam the enemy sensors, but they’d been made. “They’re on their way! Pirates looking to board!” She keyed the intercom, “Prepare for boarders!”
As soon as the lights went red the man in the jury-rigged shop ran to the new machine. “This thing ready?”
“The targeting computer hasn’t been installed and there’s still the issue of-“
“Can it move!?”
“Yes, but-“
“Strap me in!” He snached up the helmet and mask then climbed in the suit. The women began closing and sealing panels as he donned the helmet, flipped down the visor, and sealed the mask to his face.
“Gonzo! Listen to me. You don’t have a lot of time in that thing, so you gotta be in and out. Alright?”
“Lil, this is what I’m good at. Let me work.” She rolled her eyes as she closed the front up.
He opened then closed his mechanical fingers and rolled his shoulders. The suit seemed to be responding well. He stood to its full height and slammed the dome helmet down over his head. The other two already snatched a couple weapons and ran for the bridge to secure it. He stalked over to the armory bench to pick up some toys and party favors when the com cracked to life in his ear.
“Gonzo? You receiving?”
“Loud and clear.”
“Our only shot at getting out of here is you disabling their engines and breaking whatever they use to mate with us.”
He giggled slightly as he strapped the weapon harness over his mid-section. “Copy. Break shit. Can do.”
The ship shuddered and jolted. “They’re broadcasting for surrender.”
“Sure, I’ll accept their surrender.”
“Funny. They’re about to breach the stern airlock. Get ready.”
Gonzo drew a breath and put his game face on. Their MO is to breach loud and fast. A little shock and awe. He planted a couple surprises by the hatch then took cover around the bulkhead.
“They’re about to breach.” He popped a couple smoke grenades and tossed them down the corridor. Then an idea struck him, and he popped a couple more and thrust them in his harness for a bit of Blackbeard flair. He readied his weapon and checked the other two. All he could do was wait.
A few seconds later the hatch blasted in and two canids rushed into the haze. Gonzo didn’t know how armored they were, but he figured being covered in burning napalm was a bad thing. He leaned the nozzle around the corner and lit up the entrance. The blinding light pierced the smoke and judging from the screams, they weren’t ready for assaulting a weapons manufacturing ship. Now came the fun part of the suit. While the auto-aim and friend/foe feature weren’t installed, it did have a suite of sensors such as sonar, lidar, and infrared.
Gonzo could see the outlines of the thrashing pirates and held his fire. A couple more pirates entered the hall to drag their comrades out. That’s when he hit the clacker. The anti-personnel mines went off, filling the confined space with hundreds of ball-bearings in an instant.
“Hey! We gotta clean all that up when you’re done you know!”
“Relax. I’m advancing now. Give me a map.”
Sure enough, a holo layout of the pirate ship sprung to life in the corner of his vision, complete with the highlighted sections of engineering and security. He advanced through the smoke onto the pirate ship. As he emerged through the smoke, more billowing off him like a demon fresh from Hell, he saw more pirates readying to storm his little craft. They were lightly armored. Shame. With another squeeze and lazy turn, he coated the would-be intruders.
Realizing they bit off more than they could chew, the lights on the pirate vessel began flashing red, and a call to repel boarders went out. Gonzo hustled down the passages headed toward engineering. He rounded the corner and dove back behind the corner as the ursdain with a gatling laser opened up from the other end of the hall. He wasn’t sure the flamethrower would make it to the other side, so he swapped to his baby. He tossed his last smoke grenade around the corner and counted to ten.
When he felt the passage was good and obscured, he held his replica China Lake around the corner and fired. Fwoomp…BOOM! Something wet and red hit the wall beside Gonzo. I think I got ‘em. He pumped another round into the chamber and continued.
He found Engineering easily enough and stormed inside. It was a large room dominated by…Well, the engine he supposed. Gonzo wasn’t an engineer, but he was a 2300. He was about to jog up to the biggest most important looking bit when his legs were taken out from under him. He was quickly bound up in ssypno coils and could hear the suit groaning under the pressure.
“There’ll be no more of that. Now let’s get you out of that can.”
Gonzo struggled to no avail, but he’d be damned before he gave up. He took a breath and forced his arms out away from his body. The suit groaned and struggled to give him the breathing room he needed. When he thought he had the space to work with, his hand shot to his knife strapped to his belt. He drew it and twisted his hand just as the coils snapped shut around him. The pirate stabbed herself in the soft scales of her underbelly just as Gonzo drew his arm around his torso slicing long and deep.
She shrieked as he carved, and quickly tried to slither away, but he snatched a piece of her armor and rode her, continuing to stab and slash at the joints in her suit. She tried to curl in on herself and grab the man with her upper arms. He wrestled with her for a while before he drew his offhand behind her opposing arm then using her own death grip on his main hand bent her arm around his. Her elbow snapped and she shrieked. With brief freedom of movement, Gonzo drew his knife up and plunged it into her sub armored neck. Her tail thrashed and writhed before the life seeped from her.
Gasping and sweating profusely, he drew himself up and stumbled to the drive core. Or what he thought was the drive core. He wasn’t an astrophysicist, but he was sure this thing didn’t like heavy explosives. He quickly rigged up an IED around the biggest glowiest part and set it to go off on his clacker.
He jogged from engineering to security but was stopped in the passages by a couple canids ambushing him. One opened fire with a laser-rifle, striking him in the upper torso, but the armor kept his chest from being cauterized. The blast streaked off the chest piece leaving a red-hot mark. It burned.
“Keep out of fire, Gonzo! I was trying to tell you that the heat-sinks aren’t finished yet!”
There may not have been a new hole in him, but it burned like Hell. He closed the distance to his attackers, too close to use his rifle, and they met him with claw and teeth drawn. The first canid threw themselves at him, knocking him down, and clamping their jaws around where his neck would be. He heard a hiss as something gave way on his shoulder. He fought and rolled to buck them off, but they held fast.
Gonzo decided it was time to draw his sidearm and clamped his hand down on the head of the assaulting canid to keep them in place. The other one tried to claw at his legs, but only found solid titanium alloy. He reached down to his holster and drew the comically oversized revolver, now appropriately sized in the power-armor’s fist. He thrust the barrel under the canid’s chin and fired. Their friends’ helmet rocketing off their head gave Gonzo the brief shock needed to roll the first pirate off him, raise his pistol, and fire point blank at his second attacker. As their head snapped back, he hauled himself back onto his feet and limped into security.
He needed to find a way to release his ship but drew short at the two canids and taurian blocking the consoles. The two canids threw themselves at Gonzo, biting and clawing for all they were worth. The heat in the suit was becoming unbearable. It was starting to sear bits of exposed flesh. Gonzo regretted jumping in in a tank top.
One canid clamped their jaws on his neck while the other went for his legs trying to drop him to the deck. Something snapped to his left and he lost all control of his left arm. It was just a hundred pounds of dead weight. He fell back swinging his pistol around trying to pistol-whip his attackers.
“That’s enough! Just give up and we’ll sell you somewhere nice.” The taurian called out.
Gonzo bucked his hips and fired at the canid by his legs but missed. Repeating what he did before he point-blank lobotomized the canid by his shoulder. With a roll, he popped himself back up readying his next shot when the second canid fell on him. He held his ground as they slashed and leapt to bite.
He caught them in the air and slammed them into the bulkhead beside him. It was nice to be eye level with them for once. He used this to his advantage by slamming his titanium fist into their face and gut repeatedly, feeling each subtle bone crack and snap. The taurian grabbed him under the arms and hurled him to the other side of the room as the last canid slumped down the wall.
The pirate drew some kind of bladed weapon. Big mistake. Gonzo drew his tomahawk, and sprinted forward with his head down. Using all the power in the suit he had, he slammed into her stomach and drove her forward into the wall.
She recovered her breath quickly and began raining blows down on his back and shoulders. The strain was beginning to get to him. Sweat was streaming down his body, stinging his eyes. The suit burned. He bent his knees then shot upright, driving his helmet into her chin. She rocked back in shock and Gonzo took a couple steps back. His left arm was dead. He could only grasp with the fingers. The pirate rubbed her chin.
“Oh, you’ll pay for that.”
Gonzo quickly tossed his tomahawk up and grabbed it by the end, before hurling it at his enemy. It buried in her shoulder, and she screamed. He sprinted at her full tilt with his head down shoulder out and pinned her to the wall. She kept fighting and pushed him back. Gonzo used his hips to swing his dead arm around to the pirate and clamped down with his hand. His hand locked in place as the taurian began to try and ineffectually push him away. Panting, he decided to give her a bit of backward-knee syndrome. He hauled back and put his and his suits’ full weight into a stomp kick right on her knee.
It folded back and she shrieked. Now at chest height he began slamming his fist into her helmet until it warped and broke. He stopped when he saw the stream of blood pour out the bottom.
He tried to make his way to the console, but realized his hand was stuck gripping the dead-weight of the corpse. He planted one boot on its back and pulled for all he was worth. With a fresh souvenir of taurian hide trapped in his grasp, he quickly worked the security console and disengaged the clams holding his ship in place. Once freed, he pulled out his clacker and slammed it. The whole ship rocked and shuddered. Catching his que he limp-jogged back to his ship. The remaining pirates were too busy with damage control as the ship quickly began filling with vacuum. Gonzo found his airlock with minimal resistance and threw himself in it.
“Blast!” he cried as he clutched the safety bar inside the lock. Grokna punched the skiff for all it was worth headed for the nearest jump point.
When the airlock cycled Gonzo limped back into the scorched cargo hold with hydro leaking down his left side. Lil and Korsk sprinted in to check on the man as he clumsily clutched at the emergency releases. The dome helmet fired clean off the top while the chest piece fired out revealing the sweat drenched and burned pilot. The suit dropped to its knees as Gonzo flopped out ripping his mask and helmet off. He gulped at the fresh air and luxuriated in the coolness of the metal floor when he gasped, “I…I have…Some notes…Need…Better cooling…”

2023.06.05 07:03 Wonderful-Decision88 Superboy short story.
It was cold, or was it hot? Conner couldn’t really tell anymore. Each day he could feel himself weakening. Each day he could hear less of the people outside and more of the madness inside.
Bang.
Bang.
“Dinner time.” A guard opened the door. Baton in hand, smirk always on play.
Syringe in hand, the guard did what he always did. He didn’t need to do it, not anymore, Conner was too weak to even stand up most days. He did it because he felt strong. He remembers Lex would do the same thing sometimes, he remembers Lex doing those things like he’d done them too.
Conner would try to fight back in any way possible, but he was always too slow. It always ends in torment and despair anyway, why should he try anymore?
The guard slips him a sedative, and then everything goes black.
-Line Break-
When Conner wakes up, he always expects something other than the red tint he’s used to seeing. It’s like all he can see is red.
At first, it wasn’t as bad.
But the red sunlight made sure to block anything else from coming in. No yellow sunlight, no powers, at least that was what everyone else thought.
If it’d been a year ago, Conner would’ve been able to bust out of this cell with a flick of the risk and some mildly focused concentration. Now, he wasn’t even sure if he could lift a fork, never mind telekinetically open and then crushing a door.
Ding.
Ding.
Ding.
Conner’s eyes widened, he knew what was coming next, at least he knew what type of pain he was going to feel, he wasn’t sure how but he was going to feel it.
He was too weak to make a sound. The only thing that escaped his lips was the heavy breathing of a man being slowly killed, and then not.
They made sure to pump just enough artificial stimulant into his body, just enough so he would stay alive, just enough so that they could experiment more.
After the treatment would sit there, in his tattered suit, with his leather jacket, on the ground ,tormenting him. Thinking and whispering to himself, “Superman’s invincible, so I’m invincible, Superman’s gonna save me.”
Then he remembers that Superman does not remember.
He breaks all over again.
-Line Break-
They’ve kept him in a bigger cell, Conner can hear Waller, she’s been planning something big, but he doesn’t know what yet.
He keeps telling himself that Superman would never break, that he’s not Lex Luthor, that he wouldn’t do the things that Lex would but he knows it’s all for nothing.
The doors open and Conner can feel the strain of kryptonite already. He gets up steadily, conserving as much strength as he can. He sees a syringe with yellow liquid running through it.
Conner feels like a drug addict. He's always waiting for his next fix of yellow sunlight. They never give him too much, just enough to supersede the effects of kryptonite. From who Conner sees in front of him, he knows he’ll need a lot more than one injection.
Metallo grins, “been a while kid, ready for round two?”
Conner sees a beaten up sword in front of him, he looks behind to see his leather jacket.
Conner’s eyes harden, not speaking a single word, he picks up the sword.
-Line Break-
Conner is able to hold his own against Metallo, he can feel himself getting a little bit stronger day by day.
The injections are getting more frequent as well. The injections make his aura stronger, he feels like he could pick up a truck, if he tried enough. He could, but he can’t. He’s savoring every last bit of his aura that he can muster, he never knew that he could do this, stockpiling T.K. energy.
Conner smiles for the first time in months.
The doors open, Conner doesn’t spot a sword there anymore. Instead of one sword and one vial, he sees two vials.
Conner grins again.
-Line Break-
Amanda Waller has had her hands full with Conner Kent. She needs him to be perfect, perfect for her. The world isn’t ready for what she has planned, but what she has planned is what the world needs.
Clark Kent, Jonathan Kent, they are what the world wants. The perfect, most ideal alien saviors, so human that they are more so than anyone else.
Amanda grins, don’t humans make mistakes? Don’t they get angry? She can see the signs in Conner, he’s getting hungry, for more. For more power.
She will make him into the perfect Superman. She will make him into her perfect Superman.
-Line Break-
Conner’s almost ready, he just needs one more vial. His T.K. is far more effective when he’s in physical contact with someone, he isn’t just Clark, he’s Lex, he’s Conner.
He knows what Metallo’s weakness is. Conner wouldn’t kill anyone, Ma’ and Pa’ taught him differently.
Conner's face remains as stoic as Kal’s. He wouldn’t kill anyone, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t hurt anyone.
Conner looks at his leather jacket for a good minute, he speaks his first word for the first time in months, “hope.”
-Line Break-
Conner can see the two vials on the tray, it’s just three feet away from him.
His face was calm, cold and calculating. Not like a drug addict, but a prisoner, a desperate warrior, a slave looking for a way out.
Conner had already found it.
The two vials of sunlight supplements were then placed into syringes. When the injection pierced Conner’s skin, he could feel the energy welling up in him, strengthening his tendons, keeping him from starving.
Metallo had that same stupid grin on his face. A robotic kryptonite green eye began to shine violently.
Conner knew what to do, conserve energy, every moment might make him set off some of his T.K. aura. He ducked, rolled, and dodged.
He closed the distance between them until he was just an inch away from touching Metallo’s robotic half.
Conner didn’t smile, he thought he would, but he didn’t. His face was as calm and stoic looking as ever.
What Conner did do however, was say something all to familiar, “touch down.”
With contact Metallo went flying. Conner put a little too much into that blow. Metallo was smoking.
Conner stayed stoic.
With one final breath he let it all go.
-Line Break-
Releasing a T.K. an explosion of that magnitude required a great understanding of how his abilities, more specifically ability worked. His telekinesis worked by converting his aura into telekinetic energy. The closer someone is, the less aura Conner would have to expend.
So Conner thought that if he stockpiled enough of his aura, and then consequently let go of it all in one, singular explosion, he might be able to shake things up a bit.
Conner guessed that he was underground. What he did not guess was the magnitude of his T.K. explosion.
He supposed that compressing, and storing all of the aura may have caused it to develop some more explosive properties.
Conner didn't know how much damage he did, but he knew he did enough to get some sunlight to fall on his face. It was the morning, thank Rao for the morning.
One direct beam of sunlight wasn’t going to instantly shoot Conner right back to his prime, but with enough T.K. aura and concentration, flight was more than possible.
It might’ve been stupid, it might’ve been the worst decision he had ever made but he knew that he just had to do it.
To prove to himself maybe, or just to stick it to Waller, either way he would get it done.
With speeds faster than what a normal man could accomplish, Conner sped over his old cell. Not as near as fast as he used to be, but fast enough.
He spotted the jacket on the bed, grabbed it, and then zoomed back to the nearest point of direct sunlight in the now desecrated building.
“Hands in the air Superboy, we don’t need this to get bloody.” Waller had a gun aimed at Conner, one with a green glow emanating throughout.
Conner was already hovering a few inches off the ground, not enough to be noticeable, but enough to give him a head start.
“Kryptonite bullets, really? You could probably kill me with a kitchen knife with how I’m feelin’ right now.” Conner made sure to give her his best boy scout smile.
“I’m not trying to take any chances.” Even now, she still believed she was doing what was best for the earth. Conner remembered Lex felt like that too, sometimes if not all the time.
With one final breath, Conner was gone.
Waller dropped the gun, “did we at least manage to clone him?”
A scientist who was assessing Metallo responded, “yes but…”
“But what?”
“With all that kryptonite in his system, it tainted all of the blood samples we were able to secure.”
“So?”
“We managed to clone him but every single clone had an average life span of two minutes and thirty seven seconds.”
“How many more samples do we have again?”
“None.”
Waller then proceeded to say some very unsavory words to the scientist.
-Line Break-
Conner had missed this, flying with the sun on his face.
He could almost feel the kryptonite burning out of his system. He used to hate that he was a clone, then he came to terms with it, now he was loving it.
If it weren’t for his T.K Conner wasn’t sure where he’d be right now.
Still he was barely managing to keep it together, he only had enough yellow sun radiation in him to fly, and not very fast either, hell if it weren’t for his T.K. he wouldn’t be able to fly as high as he was right now.
He just needed to find a nice spot to crash land. Maybe Hawaii?
Yes, that was it. A nice place to get his nerves together before flying back to the fortress. He was still sure that there was some kryptonite left in his sys…tem.
The forgotten man of steel, the original Superboy, plummeted to the dry deserts of Arizona.
Conner looked toward where he was about to crash land, “at least I’ll get plenty of sun.”

2023.06.05 06:31 sellidionne Any indoor mess free activity ideas?
I work full time from home and my 2.5 y/o is not in day care.
I need something to do with him or give him to do during work hours. I am unable to leave too far from my computer because I never know when work will come in so the park, pool, playground, etc are out of the question until after work. we go to the pool or playground on my half days and/or after work.
We live in an apartment so we dont have a yard, just a small balcony. I could take my computer there.
I just dont know what to do aside from setting up my computer in the bathroom to let him play in the tub or sticking him with the Ipad (usually the go to, he gets bored with the tub fast.) but I hate how much screen time he is getting.

2023.06.05 04:51 beautifulcroissants Navigating weekends when hubby is home
I'm a sahm to a 10 month old and my husband works four 10 hour days so he spends 3 days home. He is driving me crazy those 3 days home. I feel like he slowly dragging behind me completely lost. Example: this morning baby got up I brought her to the bed to bf her and then he took her downstairs to start our morning, changed her while I had a few minutes to get my day started. I go downstairs and the tv is on. I have to tell him every weekend to turn it off, that she'll sit and watch it and not play with her toys. So he'll put whatever on to watch on his phone which I'm fine with. I come down and start mine and babies breakfast. I'd make my husband some but he has no interest in oatmeal. The whole time he standing in our pantry watching his show and making a coffee. I get mid through breakfast and ask him to grab something out of the fridge. He can't find it. I get up and get it and he's back to watching his phone. I said to him "by the time you eat breakfast we will have finished." He says he doesn't have anything good for breakfast. I told him theres a can of biscuits in the fridge. He starts to get them ready (while still watching his show) and I tell him hey you don't even have the oven on. He randomly sets it and its too high. I tell him to turn off the show and pay attention. He gets them in the oven and then wants to vacuum. He's 50% of the way done in between throwing sausage in the air fryer and she is ready for a nap. I get her down and go clean a bathroom, he's finally eating breakfast. She gets up from nap while he's playing some video games. I get myself and the baby dressed and ask him if we can still take a trip to the home improvement store. He then wants to shower but changes his mind. I give her some lunch while he gets dressed. Fast forward to when we should be having lunch and he's working on something in the garage. It's like this all day... him several steps behind us.
Also his friends are online at the end of the day and he wants to play with them but the baby took a long nap and her bedtime has now been pushed so she's not asleep yet. Which results in me doing dinner, more playtime, bath and bedtime so he can get some friend time. I wouldn't care if we weren't constantly discussing putting other things first...We want to give her a bottle at bedtime I have to pump for 16 minutes to do that. I can't pump and give her a bath. And I can't pump while she's playing because she's in a super clingy stage and will not let me an arms length away from her. He wants me to make time for myself to exercise, I'd like too but I can't when I can't pass the baby off to him because he's 3 steps behind me.
I'm glad he's helping out with things around the house but I'm struggling to not feel overwhelmed, keep her on a routine and keep making my goals for the day. Any advice?

2023.06.05 04:32 Mean-Classic-7739 Something in the blizzard pt.4
Part 4 Day 14 **Chloe and Fred stood guard by the doorway to the stairs, their guns trained on it. Multiple screeches could be heard upstairs and slowly carefully they both started going up. SCREECH! One of the hounds appeared** **Fred looked like he was going to argue but he lowered his head and nodded.** **“Wait, where's mom?” I asked the worry heavy in my voice.** **Fred looked down somberly and Gretchen started sobbing.** **“N… no sh… she’s… she can’t be dead.” I stammered out.** **“I’m sorry Joey, if I could’ve done something I would’ve.” He apologized.** **I looked down in despair beginning to fill my very soul. My mom, the person who’d raised me, was gone. She was gone forever. I felt the tears begin to pool in my eyes and Chloe gave me another tight hug.** **SLAM! The pile of junk against the door rattled and one of the boys screamed. Chloe let out a small yelp and then we all stood there in silence. SLAM! This time it was followed by a cracking sound.** **“They’re going to get in,” Fred growled, “We all need to be quiet.”** **We all sat there for a moment as the things tried, again and again, to break through, but finally, they stopped. Fred turned back to us and his eyes went wide.** **“Y’all need to get patched up real quick.” He said.** **The next few minutes were a stress-filled roller coaster. Chloe sat me down on the couch and ran to the bathroom to get the medical supplies, and she also got the sewing kit. I thought getting my back and leg stitched up while still conscious was painful, but what I felt that day I never want to feel again. I felt the needle go in and out of my face. I felt my face slowly begin to pull back together, and it was all excruciating. While Fred did his work Chloe had to sit there and cover my mouth to hold back my screams. Even through the pain and the tears in my eyes, I could see she was also crying. Finally, after what seemed like an eon he finished the last stitch and was done.** **Then he started with Chloe. I was too weak to sit up, but I held her hand as he quickly stitched up her shoulder. With each stroke of the needle, I saw the pain in her face. Tears rolled down her cheeks as he finished his work. We were all patched up, but oh I wish that could’ve fixed the sorrow we felt.** **Chloe helped me walk to our bedroom to finally get some shut-eye. My whole body hurt and ached and it all felt broken. She sat me down on the bed and gave me a grim look. She looked tired and worn. Her normally straight hair was a curly mess and little specks of dried blood were about her face.** **“I suppose you need to get changed.” She said, looking at me.** **I looked down at my still blood-soaked clothes and then back at her.** **“I suppose I do,” I said, a little embarrassed that she would have to help me.** **Once we were both settled I finally laid down with Chloe crawling into bed next to me.** **“I’m so happy you’re ok,” I said, leaning forward and kissing her.** **She smiled but it quickly faded, “Joey I’m scared.”** **“I know, I’m too, we just have…” I started but she interrupted me.** **“It just… I don’t know what’s going on. It shouldn’t be snowing still. It's almost May.” She said, her eyes tearing up, “I’ve been trying to stay strong, but I just can’t anymore. I'm scared.”** **“Chloe, it’s ok to be scared. I’m terrified.” I told her.**
“I… I have to be the brave one,” She said. “No, you don’t, you can just be the wonderful person I love. I don’t care if you’re scared or afraid I love you.” I said, pulling her into a tight hug. She started crying, totally sobbing is probably a better word. “I don’t want to lose you,” She sobbed. “I’ll be ok, I promise.” I tried to say but she wasn’t hearing me so I just held her tightly while she sobbed. Finally, after a long while of crying, she pulled away and looked at me. “Can I tell you what happened?” She asked shyly. “Yes of course,” I said, knowing that venting always helped. And so she finally told me what had happened that day in the Garrison’s house. Every little detail. When she finally finished I felt a shiver go down my spine. “I’m sorry,” Was all I could manage to say. She didn’t say anything else, she just cuddled up next to me and cried softly into my shoulder. I gently ran my hand through her hair and slowly drifted off to sleep. Day 15 **We spent the early morning preparing supplies and everything we needed then finally around noon we loaded the jeep.** **“Chloe, I’m going to get the snowplow you stay here and keep everyone safe.” He said quietly.** **“Ok, be careful,” She said, all too happy that the man wasn’t expecting her to come with him.** **Fred slowly made his way upstairs quietly and carefully creeping one step at a time. Each step he took felt like a marathon. His heart was beating so fast he thought it might burst. One step, then another, then another still, and despite his fear he finally made it upstairs.** **It looked just the way he’d seen it the evening before. Thrown around with the creeper’s large body lying near him. The massive amounts of blood around it had frozen making a large icy sheet on the carpet.** **He couldn’t help but look at the body. Its black exoskeleton reminded him of beetles. It was smooth with no color variation. There were small gaps around the joints and the legs had more exposed flesh than the exoskeleton. He looked at the small gap where the back met the thighs. He drove his fingers into the gap and started peeling the section of the exoskeleton off. It peeled nicely until he got to a certain point where it wouldn’t budge. Annoyed, he walked away and towards the front door. A frozen trail of Gretchen’s blood was still visible and partially buried in snow was my mom’s body. Fred grimaced at the sight and hurriedly continued onward. The quickest route to the snowplow lot was through a few backyards.**
The fences were mostly buried and at this point only stood 6 inches or so out of the snow. Stepping over them was easy, and they hardly hindered his path. What did begin to hinder his path was the storm. It howled and screamed at him throwing all the snow and wind it could at him. It reminded him of an angry toddler throwing their food at you. It was odd but that was the best way to put the storm. It was angry, very angry, and he didn’t know why. Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Fred stopped and slowly scanned his surroundings to see where the sound had come from but he saw nothing. He wasn’t sure why he looked; he could barely see his hand if he held it out. He guessed it was out of instinct but he wasn’t sure. He stood there listening but whatever had made the sound seemed to have also stopped. He was somewhat confused because that wasn’t really what the creatures sounded like on snow. Nor did it sound like other animals he knew. Suddenly a thought crept into his head, and in a either very dumb or very intelligent move, he spoke. “Who’s there?” He asked in as loud and as stern of a voice as he could muster. There was a small pause of silence and right as Fred began to worry he’d made a mistake he heard something on four legs sprint off in the other direction. Must’ve been a deer he thought a little annoyed that he’d thought even for a moment that it was a person. He continued onward with even more caution. He kept the shotgun up constantly now worrying something would sneak up on him. He couldn’t control his now-shaking body despite how much he tried to calm himself. He stopped walking and started taking deep breaths. In and out. In and out. He said to himself as he did the breathing exercises. After a minute he pulled himself together enough to continue. He walked on and on for what seemed like an eon before finally he arrived. He saw the large building ahead of him. It was a large warehouse-type building with multiple massive garage doors on the sides. He saw a normal-sized door the size of the building and pulled at the handle. Locked! Of course, it was locked. Slam! The first kick shook the door. Slam! The second it started to cave slightly. Slam! Crash! The door toppled onto the ground and Fred walked into the building, gun raised and ready for a fight. Chloe sat on the couch eyeing the stairs to the first floor. The responsibility to keep everyone safe was now on her, and she was determined to do that. All she could think about was the monsters outside and likely right upstairs. For all, she knew they were right upstairs conspiring to kill them. She didn’t know how right she was. CRASH! The window in the window well next to her burst open sending shards of glass all around. “What’s going on?” Gretchen asked from the other room. “Babe?” I asked in a worried frenzy. She pulled herself from the ground in a daze. She felt odd then she felt a wetness begin trickling down her face. She’d been cut up pretty well in a few places on her face. Before she could think of anything else SCREECH! She looked over and saw a hound crawling in through the now-shattered window. Shoot where’s the gun? She thought scanning the room. Her eyes scanned until they met the semi-automatic. She’d set it on the couch right where the hound was crawling through. She dove for the gun but its large clawed foot slammed onto the gun pinning it under the beast. Darn, it! Slowly she eyed the creature as it pulled itself in. It was just standing there watching her, it seemed very odd and not normal behavior. Then a faint ticking sound came from outside. SCREECH! It charged for her and she pulled her knife. BANG! The blast threw the hound off balance slamming it into the ground. She found herself looking over to see Gretchen wielding the smoking shotgun. Chloe was about to thank her when the thing got back up changing its course for Gretchen. BANG! The second shot hit the thing square in the face and it screeched in anger and pain. Chloe took the opportunity and jumped atop the thing plunging the knife deep into one of the eye sockets. It screeched again and jumped up, throwing Chloe off with the knife still wedged in its eye. In the meantime, Gretchen reloaded the shotgun BANG! She shot it in the face again, but it only seemed to anger the thing. “LEGS!” Chloe screamed, pulling herself off the floor. At the same moment, Gretchen pulled the trigger and two more hounds started their way through the window. The shot hit the first hound square in one of the back legs, shattering it, and the two hounds were already halfway through the window. Fred walked into the building relieved to see it was nothing more than dark and empty. He scanned the room he’d entered. It was a small office area. His eyes fell on the small cupboard near the door. Each drawer was small and numbered 1 to 4. He pulled one open and saw keys on a hook. His heart leaped with excitement and he took his eyes and turned around. There was a small door that looked like it would be to the garage so he popped it open. Inside the garage were four large snow plows with big numbers painted on the side of them. He checked to see he had 4 so he ran to the other side of the garage to snowplow 4. Fred climbed up the door and tried to pull it open. Locked. He put the keys in and unlocked the door then hopped in and started the vehicle. It roared to life sounding like he’d woken a large sleeping lion. On the dashboard were a few bobbleheads and a small remote. He grabbed the remote and pressed button 4. Slowly with the sound of breaking ice accompanying it the garage door in front of the plow began to lurch open. He scanned around the mess of levers and buttons until he found the truck's lights. He switched them on and then slowly put pressure on the gas. The massive plow immediately began to roll forward. He’d have to be slow as even with its powerful lights it was still extremely hard to see. So with much caution, the plow pulled out of the garage pushing the snow out of its way and making its way for the road. The two hounds hissed and growled as they both pulled themselves fully through the window. Then in a quick move one made for Gretchen while the other charged for Chloe. Gretchen finished putting in the new bullets. BANG! The shot was aimed at its leg but hit it on the side. Chloe looked around and realized they’d kicked the semi-auto onto the floor. She reached for the gun, grabbed it just in time, and turned around. RAT-A-TATATATA!! Its two front legs were instantly shattered, toppling it over, causing the rest of the shots to hit it square in the face. BANG! Gretchen's second shot broke one of its front legs, but the creature unfolded its mantis arms and continued on those. Chloe didn’t even think she saw the hound going for Gretchen and pulled the trigger. RAT-A-TATATATA!! She nailed perfect shots. She hit all six limbs right at the joints causing them to collapse to the ground. They both looked around at the three broken hounds. All three still growled in pain and tried to get up, but each attempt just seemed to break them more. Chloe walked over to the first one and pulled the knife out of its eye. SCREECH! It continued letting out progressively weaker screeches until as blood poured from its eye finally, it was silent. Silently and efficiently, Chloe opened the mouths of both the others and stabbed upward piercing the brain instantly killing them. The plow soured through the snow pushing all of it aside leaving mountains of snow on both sides of the road. Suddenly there was a loud metal scraping sound and something big was thrown over and to the side. Fred stopped the plow and looked out the rearview mirror to see a now-destroyed car lying in one of the snow piles. He couldn’t help but be impressed; he didn't think the plow would be so powerful that it could hurl a car like that. He continued on and then he slowly turned onto the street the house was on. He now drove down the road and noticed as he got close to the house a large creeper standing outside. It stood there menacingly, looking down into the window wells. Worry shot through him and in an instant, he turned the plow toward the creature and rammed straight into it. He pulled forward pinning the creeper between the plow and the brick wall of the house. It lay there pinned screeching its lungs out in pain. Slowly and nervously Fred stepped out of the plow shotgun gripped tightly. SCROAr! Its call becomes much weaker. Its body was a twisted broken mess and its head only barely poked out above the plow. He walked over to the creature looking into its eyes. Jess. He thought staring into the brown eyes he’d once loved. BANG!!! The bullet tore through its already broken exoskeleton and its head exploded onto the brick wall next to it. Tears rolled down his face and he fell to his knees. “I love you, honey,” He said to the dead creature. “I’m sorry.” He hoped in his mind that she was free now, or better yet that she was already dead. Although, those eyes, those eyes, it seemed that until the moment he’d shot her she was still inside there somewhere. He started sobbing, dropping the shotgun and collapsing onto the snow. The flow of snow finally stopped and Chloe pulled herself off the ground. She looked around to see the entire basement had been partially flooded with snow. She helped me up and Gretchen hurried her kids and the dogs out of the basement. Slowly and patiently she helped me up the stairs and onto the first floor. My eyes landed on the corpse of the creeper; it was covered in icy crystals made of its own blood. I looked out the window and saw the snowplow right next to the house except it was missing a driver. Chloe sat me on the couch and hurried outside. After Fred collected himself we all packed the jeep and snow plow. Me and Fred got in the plow while the others got in the jeep. Slowly the plow lurched forward and the jeep pulled out of the driveway and followed. submitted by
