2023.03.30 06:18 LPL-Official LPL Playoffs Preview: A Spring Showdown
LPL playoffs are here! With 10 teams put into the ring, only one can hoist the trophy. Additionally, one other team will join our champion in representing the region at the first newly formatted Mid-Season Invitational! With that being said, here’s a look at each of our competitors:
10. TEAM WE (WE)
This is a team with a lot of hope! Both metaphorically and literally, with botlaner Hope and his partner Iwandy looking to make a big impact in the coming bracket. A team that looks very solid on paper, with multiple internationally appearing players alongside young rising star Shanks, they’ve unfortunately had a little bit of difficulty really putting things together over the split. However their talent shines through regardless, and they have a lot of potential to make big noise in the coming weeks.
9. ROYAL NEVER GIVE UP (RNG)
How did the former kings of Spring end up here? Well, they did after all lose their trademark “Spring Tiger”, Xiaohu. However, few expected a lineup that retained much of its MSI-winning core to fall from grace in such a devastating manner. Still anchored by their world-class botlane of GALA and Ming, the team has very little time left to figure out adaptations around Angel as their new midlaner. The clock is ticking - but if RNG hits their stride again, we all know what they’re capable of.
8. THUNDERTALK GAMING (TT)
TT are one of the real pleasant surprises of 2023. Picking up Worlds finalist huanfeng, the whole squad seemed to just click, especially with their midlaner ucal delivering on his parting promises from last year - where he vowed to take a massive stride forward in the 2023 season. Even with the team choosing to place their faith in opening day jungler Beichuan over the hyped prospect XHR, the results this tough-as-nails group delivered have been beyond what many in the community expected. If they somehow can go far here in the playoffs - speechless is all we can be.
7. TOP ESPORTS (TES)
Collapse is a bit of understatement for what happened towards the end of the split for TES. Starting out the year, they looked like an unstoppable juggernaut - standing squarely in the race for the best team in the LPL. A lineup featuring legends like Rookie and Jackeylove, anyone questioning them was considered a lunatic.
Then in Week 8, it all changed. The team rattled off 5 straight series losses, even including a disastrous sweep at the hands of 14th place LGD. Confidence in the team was shattered, and confidence within the team equally so. Now heading into the playoffs, it remains to be seen if they have the resolve to power ahead, or if the downward spiral only continues…
6. OH MY GOD (OMG)
It seems all it took to get Oh My God to a second-round playoff seed was adding a holy man to the roster. After swapping long-time veteran support COLD for a fitting namesake in ppgod, the roster which barely scraped its way into competitiveness last year is now a real threat. The scariest thing is that the team’s star players are still incredibly young with a lot of room to grow. At the rate that Shanji and Creme are maturing in the LPL, this lineup could be a force which stays at the upper half for the foreseeable future. Even if this playoffs they don’t take the title, disappointment won’t be warranted - and if they do, then all the merrier.
5. BILIBILI GAMING (BLG)
BLG’s massive roster overhaul has brought them incredible success this year, much of it coming off the blossoming of an LPL star in their ADC Elk. When one looks just at the names here, Bin - XUN - Yagao - Elk - ON, they see a collection of some of the most hyped prospects of the past half decade of the LPL. And whether they had previously panned out or not, they have all ended up here.
The only trip up they face comes from their cohesion. A lot has been said about the team’s supposed inability to adapt, especially coming from their toplaner. But have no doubts - pure talent alone can absolutely make this group a real championship contender.
4. WEIBO GAMING (WBG)
Who didn’t have WBG as one of the top 4 headed into the year? This was an obvious choice for many reasons. You have a solid collection of proven talent, alongside one of the highest-peak players of all time in TheShy.
And while TheShy of course by himself adds a massive variation to the play in the team, the veteranship and stability from almost every other position goes miles in offsetting this effect, and bringing this Weibo team to the place they deserve. We hope that this group of international legends can once again make their way to MSI, and they 100% are in the running to do so.
3. LNG ESPORTS (LNG)
Okay, now this one was somewhat unexpected. While you did have undoubtedly one of the strongest mid-jungle duos in Scout and Tarzan, a lot of people questioned the ability of their surrounding players: Zika, Hang, and LP. Time however has proven that all players on this roster are capable in their own right, leading them to a wonderful third place seed.
The question now comes to a matter of experience. Can these three former question marks stand up to the pressure of playoffs? Scout is no doubt one of the most talented midlaners - now his talent as a leader is up to the plate.
2. EDWARD GAMING (EDG)
After just touching on Scout, we now reach the team that suffered his and Viper’s departure. So many analysts thought that losing their two premier carries was a death blow to the team, but they were one hundred percent wrong.
After promoting one of the LDL’s top prospects in Leave to the main roster, and taking a gander on a previously declining Fofo, EDG’s massive risks have paid off enormously in 2023. Leave has proven himself to be an LPL-ready talent and star in the making, and Fofo had a miraculous rebound year. Now EDG is ready to re-enter the World stage, and incredibly - just as dangerous as before.
1. JINGDONG GAMING (JDG)
The “Superteam” reigns supreme after all. A roster that was built for international success, it’s not a surprise to see them claim the top spot in the LPL. There is not a single player on the team that isn’t a renowned world class talent. 369. Kanavi. knight. Ruler. Missing. They are a terrifying leviathan whose only goal is to rip apart whatever unfortunate team is placed before them - and with that said, they are the premier favorites to claim the LPL title. And hopefully, bring the MSI Cup back to LPL as well.

Demographics - Gender: Female
- Race/Ethnicity: Black/hispanic
- Residence: LI, NY
- Income Bracket: Low Income
- Type of School: Large Public School
- Hooks: URM, ROTC
Intended Major(s): Medical Anthropology/Cultural Anthropology/Anthropology
Academics * GPA: 100.07 (W), UW Unknown * Rank: N/A * Honors/AP/IB/Dual Enrollment/etc: 8 APS, rest even mix of honors and regular classes. School bans APs for freshman, 3 per year (sophomore year it’s impossible to take more than 2 because of prerequisites). * Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, AP Calc BC, AP Bio, Gov, Health, JROTC
Standardized Testing *
SAT I: 1430 (680RW, 750M). Did not report this to Northwestern and Duke, submitted everywhere else. *
AP/IB: Research (5), USH, Psych (4), World, Seminar (3). I forgot to submit this to my EA and ED schools. I reported all my scores everywhere else.
Extracurriculars/Activities 1. Section Leader at local churches choir. Accompanied by high involvement in church activities. 2. JROTC High leadership position. High involvement. 3. JROTC Drill Team Member. High involvement. 4. Tutor, Tutoring club. Medium involvement, I only did this my junior year. I explained in my additional info section that the organization halted tutoring. 5. Yearbook head of journalism. Medium involvement. 6. Member of large activism/community service organization. Medium involvement but high impact. 7. Summer Internship on healthcare (projects, presentations, classes on all sectors of healthcare). High involvement but only 6 weeks.
Awards/Honors 1. ROTC Scholarship 2. Girls state! 3. AP Scholar w/ Distinction 4. National Hispanic & African-American Recognition Programs 5. National Honor Society (??)
Letters of Recommendation *
Guidance Counselor (10/10): He let me read it and also made it really personal. I think his letter resembled my character really well.
- Gov Teacher (9/10): I didn’t get to read this rec but he is known for writing good (and slightly embellished) letter of recs.
- Crim Justice Teacher (6/10): He let me read it and I felt like the essay is generic. It doesn’t add anything to my application but it definitely doesn’t paint me in a negative light either.
Interviews - Barnard: Interviewed for CSTEP. I would say the interview was an 8/10; I easily connected with my interviewer but there were some questions I could’ve answered better.
- University of Rochester: Alumni Interview; super great! Loved my interviewer a ton :)
Essays Common App I started brainstorming my essay March of my junior year (perfect time to start them, IMO). Finalized my essay for ED1; after my rejection, I edited the essay (not heavily) and I think it improved the quality so much.
My essay was about my curly hair and my journey of its self acceptance. Throughout the essay, I continuously referenced barbie dolls and the way society compared me to one. I continued this idea throughout the entire essay and I think it worked really well. Everyone thinks I’m a good writer so I had a lot of fun writing this essay!
Supplementals For all of my Why Us essays, I discussed my passion for medicine, how my chosen major addresses this, and why the school was a good fit for my physician career. I had barely any medicine ECs so I felt it was extremely important to express why I want to pursue medicine.
Decisions Acceptances: * Barnard College (Committed!) * Northwestern University (still shocked) * University of Southern California (insane) * University of Rochester * Villanova University * Case Western Reserve University * Fordham University (EA) * Lehigh University * SUNY Binghamton University * SUNY Stony Brook (EA) * SUNY University at Buffalo (EA)
Waitlists: * Boston College * Boston University * Northeastern University (EA deferred) * UNC Chapel Hill
Rejections: * NYU (ED1)
Waiting on * Duke (IDEK why I applied, just wanna see the result for funsies💀).
Additional Information: In my additional info, I thoroughly clarified my home life. As a primary caretaker for my siblings, I couldn’t partake in as many ECs as I would’ve liked. Please make sure you’re specific here! This was roughly 1/3 of my additional information section.
I also talked about my extremely long commute to school and how this hinders my EC involvement.
The last of additional information was targeted towards explaining my ECs. For me, it’s really quality over quantity and I wanted to make sure the AOs knew this.
Advice 1. ED rejection is NOT everything. My NYU rejection absolutely crushed me but I’ve found my new dream school (Barnard!)
- Do not ED if you think you have potential to improve. My ED application lacked a major award (ROTC Scholarship), and I had a few mistakes in my EC section and essay. I would say my strongest application was my Barnard one and it’s the one that got me the farthest.
- Don’t feel discouraged if you lack “stellar” ecs. Clearly, my ECs weren’t all that nor were they plentiful. However, in my common app, I worded these ECs extremely well and I made sure telaborate on major projects I was working on in my Additional Information section. Also, don’t compare yourself with applications you see on youtube, tiktok, ApplyingToCollege, or even this sub. I can’t tell you how agonized I was thinking I would never get into one of my top choices, yet I got into multiple reputable institutions.
- If youre a freshman-junior with any questions or would like to read my supplements (or even my common app essay), LMK. I’ve made a master document with all my essays (minus additional information as it is personal) and I would love to shshare it with any junior who needs it.

2023.03.30 05:32 BabeRyuth Seamus Coleman retires from coaching...at age 35
2023.03.30 05:30 bwv1045 Time for accountability
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/03/college-admissions-acceptance-videos-tiktok-teen-mental-health/673546/
https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-particular-misery-of-college-admissions-tiktok
Mental health starts with us, and there's nothing healthy about what college admissions culture is becoming. So why do we keep engaging with it?
So often, I have heard peers talking about how miserable they feel, how stressed they are about getting into their school of choice. I have also watched as these same individuals dive into the icy AP sea with no life vest on and take up countless service opportunities that they admit to having no real investment in. More than anything, they talk about uni. Endlessly. And while it is maddening to be in an environment of such demonstrable fakery and shallowness (the term "rat race" comes to mind), there is no sense in punching at this very real social current affecting today's youth. We need sympathy, understanding, and fellowship to turn the tide.
Speaking personally, I didn't start thinking about college until the summer following my junior year of HS. I don't consider this too late, but it did mean that senior year came as a bucket of cold water as I scrambled to apply EA to the majority of my schools. There was no class offered to help with the process, no club for discussion. Often, I got in my head questioning how it was possible that I could simply pop in the Common App and apply most anywhere, sometimes at no charge. Just like that, life caught up with me.
In the words of Chuck Close, "Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work." Maybe not the friendliest sentiment, but the man makes a point. The appeal of these so-called college advice gurus on YouTube e.g., or of the viral acceptance video, is that they provide a sense of direction. There's no glamour in making sure you've filled out the FAFSA correctly, or revising a personal statement. Therefore, we seek comfort in the apparent formulas, the traceable paths that will open the doors for the coveted degree. The great irony here is that this social media-ified culture regarding college apps disproves its own immovability. Watching an AP scholar be rejected from Yale is a sadistic exercise in demonstrating the unpredictability of admissions decisions. Likewise, watching someone be admitted to Harvard, no matter how great an achievement, doesn't doesn't do anything for anyone. It does not change your academic abilities, your background, or your work ethic.
All this to say: YOU are in charge- act like it. :') Don't take classes if you don't want to. Don't feel pressured to be the well-rounded, worldly mover-shaker that knows everything before they enter an institution of "higher education". You are getting a degree, pursuing next-level schooling to LEARN. It will drain you. You will fall, you will get dirty. But- for yourself and others- don't go along with those marching off towards some imagined oasis to refresh, to clean themselves off. Wear your sweat with pride- that will take you places.
~
To whoever needs to hear it: knowledge can never overshadow the value of emotional intelligence. Spread the happiness you reap from being independent from others. Show those around you *a* way towards success- we're all a little lost, but we can find each other in the end.

Letters of Recommendation I read both of my teacher recommendations. Honestly, these were amazing and I couldn’t be more grateful. In length, they were nothing crazy (600 - 700), but in terms of content, they were completely personalized. Other than the advice that y’all have probably seen everywhere about teachers including unique anecdotes and tying these back into how your character traits will benefit the school in question, I was lucky enough to have my teachers do something especially special for me. It is not very often that you notice teachers including comparisons in their letters of recommendation. Phrases like, “the best in my class,” “the top student,” “one of my favorites,” “most enjoyable to write for,” and “will be one of the few that go on to the big stage” are phrases that exemplify how strongly a teacher advocates for you. These phrases can be deal-breakers, as the letter of recommendation is the only component that allows for someone other than you to speak on your behalf. Regarding my counselor recommendation, unfortunately, I do not have access to it, but I am probably one of the closest students to him in my class. He also happens to be the IB Coordinator and the Quiz Bowl Sponsor.
Interviews This was super enjoyable and probably my favorite part of the entire process. Although Penn claims that this interview is more-so for you to ask questions and to get to know the school, my interviewer practically guaranteed that she would write a stellar report. Out of the 90 minutes that we spoke for, only 30 were actually devoted to her asking me questions. The remaining 60 minutes were just us talking about… Life? It got to the point where she taught me how to make croque monsieur (it’s basically a French grilled cheese). I actually lost my note sheet, as my interview was back in November, but if I remember correctly, the following were the questions (the part that y’all readers probably care about) asked: “Introduce yourself by telling me three things about yourself,” “Tell me about your favorite extracurricular activity and its impact on your life,” “Tell me about what inspired you to want to study business at Penn, and specifically at Wharton,” and “Tell me about why you want to be a part of the Huntsman Program and why you chose the target language that you chose.” It’s important to note that while these do appear to only be 4 questions, the interview is supposed to be conversational, so many follow-up questions were asked in between.
Essays Especially for someone of my demographic, I haven’t experienced many of the shared struggles or common experiences that most speak of in their essays. With that being said, I believe that I have also experienced many things that others of my background have not, so that probably made my essays a bit more unique. Without revealing too much, my personal statement was about how I combined my own struggles and attachment to the community to engage in three unorthodox activities. My supplements went into depth regarding these three activities. I’d say that this was a very risky strategy, considering that if one of the essays didn’t really hit home with the readers, the rest would also fall flat. Luckily, this was successful. One thing that I would definitely suggest to applicants in general, especially for Penn, is to look at a school’s mission statement and “values” (just Google *school name* “values”) and ensure that all of your essays showcase at least three of those values and make it a prominent theme throughout them. Additionally, take advantage of the UStrive Platform. Trust me, I haven’t been paid to advertise or anything like that, but it was a life-saver. College consultants can charge thousands of dollars, but with UStrive, if you choose the right mentor, you can get an even better experience completely free of charge.
Decisions (indicate ED/EA/REA/SCEA/RD) Acceptances: - ED (COMMITTED): University of Pennsylvania - Huntsman Program - Wharton (will be concentrating in Finance and Business Analytics) + The College
- EA: Florida State University

2023.03.30 02:52 thotbreak The beauty of AMXF
- The majority of emigration from Korea / Asia is male emigration, i.e., from as far back as 100 years ago and the days of coolies and American railroad workers, Chinese and Asian men were willing to leave AF to go abroad to get married under harsh conditions. Asian women for the most part refuse to leave Asia, except when adopted or their Chan fathers go abroad. Compare this to the Indian diaspora, of which 30-35% of which were women who would rather live under slavery than stay in India with abusive men. 0.1 - 1% of all early Asian immigration to the west was female. E.g., Asian men are more ready to get away from AF, than AF are ready to be around XM.
- The majority of immigration TO Korea (and other parts of Asia) is actually female immigration from other parts of Asia, including Russia. 70-90% of international marriages in Asia, are local men with foreign women. Western media either flat out ignores this, or paints it as "bride trafficking" (google Pakistani women and Chinese men, African women and Chinese men, Russian women and Chinese men). It is deliberate anger-fueled slander. This can be easily confirmed by simply looking this up and reading the utter hostility towards and erasure of any trace of consensual AMXF from media, almost always done by western men and / or unattractive western women. Nothing enrages a western man / unattractive woman raised to believe money and toxic masculinity gets women, to have a poor Asian man get a woman he has to work for with a 0% chance she'll be attracted to him. Essentially, ugly people cursed with a lifetime of lovelessness, hate the idea of love and beauty.
- Majority of AMWF is in fact women marrying DOWN socially economically. The Chinese cook meme here, is not a meme, it's reality. China has an artists community where almost all of them have foreign, very beautiful wives. Artists are bottom of the hierarchy in China. Once in a while, even astroturfed Asian websites such as Chinasmack, will publish stories about security guards (if you've been to China, these guys sit on their asses in tiny booths eating cup noodles, opening gates to people, essentially a "no work" job made created by the city) marrying gorgeous young foreign women. These websites lie or slander it. 90-95% of "Asian" websites are run by unfuckable white guys with yellow fever, and / or unfuckable Asian women. These two groups, being at the bottom, have an Elliot Rodger like hatred for Asian guys rooted in insecurity and jealousy. The more unfuckable you are, the more you hate Asian men. (WMAF Hapas are famous for this, being deeply insecure as a result of being the son of a racist head-case and a hateful Asian woman bitter than she was born bottom of the barrel and married to a bottom of the barrel).
- Majority of AMWF is rooted in nothing short of pure love / lust, and non-financial based AMAF is actually a trend in mainland China with something called "naked marriage". If you look at the highest profile AMWF, which are never high profile because of slander, they always involve some model or A-list celeb, with her photographer, etc. Barbara Palvin, Miranda Kerr, Lorde, Angelina Jolie, Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey, Megan Fox, Amouranth and various other global sex symbols have been with / stood up for Asian male beauty. This is due to having the self esteem to be independent rather than uglier women who cannot afford to toe social norms. Ugly people CANNOT afford to go against social beliefs. Their only chance at survival is to go along with what the rest of the ugly majority says.
- The majority of XMAF is financial / status based, without love and especially sex. Fundamentally, this disturbs the participant in XMAF very very deeply, and he knows it. He was incel long before he turned to Asian women as his last choice, but he remains incel with a woman who sees him as a tool to get social acceptance / money / status WITHOUT sex (this is the cultural ideal for East Asian women). True love makes you chill, calm, happy, positive and altruistic - this is the complete opposite of what the west is - a violent, lying, hateful and warmongering cultural mess. Even Jordan Peterson, king of the lost white boys, admitted this. Asian men across all continents, have monumentally lowest suicide rates than every other race but black men (about equal statistically), and three times lower than hapa men do. Even within marriages, WM and non-AM demonstrate high levels of domestic abuse, sexual assault and pedophilic attacks on children as result of being in relationships with women who were never sexually attracted to them. A good example is the mass disappearance of Indigenous Canadian women (who look Asian), who are being mass murdered by incel white men driven by the fact that even the lowest status women do not want sex with them. In fact, global white male supremacy was nothing but a concerted attack to push white men to the top through invasive rape (colonialism), capitalism (forcing women to be financially dependent on white men), when they could not compete with Asian men naturally. However, due to the lack of love within XMAF, these men are still unhappy and consistently on the attack against Asian men.
- While people love to harp on the dead bedroom WMAF meme, one AMWF is more soul crushing to the west than 1000 WMAF. Even the American Klan knew this. The Klan was so repulsed by the idea of a racist white man marrying a woman of color that they themselves gave AMWF a pass as morally more less reprehensible than a racist white man taking a woman of color. White supremacists from the 1870's even themselves wrote that the only way to compete with Asian men's ability to literally "make love", was to make marriage strictly transactional, or they would lose the demographic war. (Again, citable). The degree of hostility towards Asian men even over black men goes back 100s of years, with Asian men being the target of even bigger lynching campaigns than black men. In today's world of widespread cuckold fetishizing, Asian men still remain open target number 1. This is because unfuckable men who rely on paid sex and transactional relationships, hate the idea of loving relationships with Asian men.
- The reason why WMAF like George Soros absolutely, fundamentally, to their core HATE AMWF, is because to them, relationships are purely transactional. AMWF/ AMXF / AMAF is not transactional, it is purely love. To people who whose entire existence revolves around ugliness, they are triggered by beauty. Imagine being a man whose entire chance of half-hearted, unloving "sex" is by being wealthy, how much of a threat to you poor Chinese farmers are. It's devastating to them on an existential level.
- Hollywood's attack on Asian men is a proven, tangible thing. Media is an extension of the insecurities of the men who control it. Putting ugly Asian men in front of a camera is their way of hopefully preventing largescale AMXF because they fundamentally cannot compete with an average Asian male on a base level. Countries with high rates of "Chads" tend to put way more Asian men in front of the camera, as admiration. France does this, Pakistan has done this. 100 years ago, even the most hardcore racist white men put Asian men in front of the camera, as admiration for our looks. Nowadays with Hollywood being under the control of Tarantino's, Harvey Weinsteins, Adam Sandlers, and other pathologically undesirable men, demeaning Asian men is no different from an incel demeaning Asians to feel better about his sorry, terminal illness of being undesirable. Asian American female actresses, themselves in asexual convenience marriages with men they have no desire for, also work to this end, out of fear that mass AMXF will ruin any chance they have of survival.
- Contrary to what people think, Asian women are NOT the most desirable. It's actually the opposite, in that Asian men are much more desirable than the women. If this wasn't true, Asian women wouldn't have a reputation as being extremely toxic and mate-guarding towards Asian men while simultaneously acting like white men who look like mass shooters are actually attractive. AMWF gets Asian women provably upset because they also occupy the bottom run of the female sexual hierarchy (if this wasn't true, why would they act like literal amoral, cutthroat, hateful incels with no options in life but to be toxic). Even if they seem "sexy," deep down they're not, since they have a century year old reputation of being loveless, asexual pay for plays. One of the reasons why white men with Asian partners are almost uniformly toxic (ranging from being literal Nazis, conspiracy theorists, to invading Asian spaces and pretending to be Asian men), is a result of his Asian partner's ruthless belittling and asexuality. Of course in 2021, literal "Opposite Land," ugly people try to normalize their ugliness to feel better about themselves.

Even though, there were many exciting arcade racing titles during the 90’s there were also some cool games for various home console including the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. When it comes down to racing games for the Nintendo 64 one of the titles that comes to mind is World Driver Championship which was released right before the start of the new millennium. World Driver Championship was developed by Boss Game Studios and published by Midway as a three dimensional racing game. One of the most exciting feature about this World Driver Championship is the various modes of gameplay featured in this game. When it comes down to single player gameplay one of the most exciting features World Championship Driver was the Championship mode. The Championship mode for this game was very exciting and also challenging as players start of competing for the Novice Cup and work their way throughout game to earn various other cups including Endurance, Seasons, Invitational, Orca, Spider, Ring of Fire and Ultimatum. Another cool feature about this game is the inclusion of Rumble Pak’s because it made the game appear more realistic as player was driving. Not only did World Driver Championship have an excellent season mode but there were also various countries where players could race which added more excitement to World Driver Championship. In this game players can race in various places such as Rome, Hawaii, New Zealand Switzerland, Japan, Zurich and Las Vegas which was fantastic. The graphics and visual presentation for the stages and cars in this game were amazing and almost resembled a few of the racing games that you would see for the Sony PlayStation such as Gran Turismo. Even though, World Driver Championship does not get mentioned as much as many racing titles of the 1990’s it was still a great game to play if you were a fan of the racing genre. Even though, World Driver Championship is not as popular as other games such as the Top Gear series some people would considered this racing title an underrated classic that deserves more praise than it gets. submitted by GamingHearts1 to u/GamingHearts1 [link] [comments] |

2023.03.30 01:23 OxyC377 Brookes ends Silverstone test fastest as Bennetts BSB season opener now beckons
| Double Bennetts British Superbike Champion Josh Brookes ended the final pre-season R&G Official Test at Silverstone by setting the pace for the FHO Racing BMW Motorrad team in the damp conditions, as the focus now turns to the opening round at the circuit on Easter weekend (April 7/8/9). Brookes’ benchmark time was set on the opening day of the test, but the Australian still topped the times on day two in the damper conditions. Brookes said: "It’s pretty obvious to say that finishing Silverstone on top of the times is pleasing for me, the team and everyone involved. We’ve been focusing mainly on the new engine as it reacts in a different way to the old one. Not that I have much understanding of the old one, but for the mechanics the BMW reacts differently with the new spec engine, so they have to go through a variety of changes to understand better how to set the engine breaking, as well as the throttle with the way it feels as I accelerate out of a turn. "There are some levels we have worked through to basically make the bike run efficiently and that’s more or less where we’ve spent most effort and time, and it’s those fundamentals of what we have to be able to progress later. So, once we get this work done, and to a point where I’m happy we can then focus on suspension, chassis positions and fine tune the other bits. "I guess luckily for us and the work we’ve had to do, you can do regardless of the weather and fortunately we’ve been able to make progress on this. We’ve improved the engine braking and the feeling of the throttle in my hand, which must be good, as we’ve gone fastest in what’s been very tricky conditions. As soon as we get some dry track, we can focus on more common changes such as suspension, but during the test we couldn’t really focus on anything else due to the conditions.” Kyle Ryde was 0.816s adrift of his championship rival onboard the leading LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha after topping the opening two tests ahead of next week’s opening round. Danny Buchan was third fastest on the timesheets despite crashing out unhurt in the final session of the test, but the SYNETIQ BMW rider’s time from yesterday put him narrowly ahead of McAMS Yamaha’s Jason O'Halloran on combined times. Peter Hickman completed the top five on the second FHO Racing BMW Motorrad M 1000 RR with Christian Iddon holding sixth on the Oxford Products Racing Ducati. Danny Kent’s time from the penultimate session moved him into seventh overall as the Lovell Kent Racing Honda team prepare for their debut races next weekend, just ahead of Ryan Vickers on the second LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha. Honda Racing UK’s Andrew Irwin and Bennetts BSB rookie Tim Neave completed the top ten for McAMS Yamaha. Official BSB Test - Combined results all classes Note: The old McGuinness seems to feel great on the stock Honda. Being just behind on Dean Harrison (who was out on his Superbike). From the 'real road racing' riders the pace from Josh Brookes, Peter Hickman, Alastair Seeley (also on a stock), and Davey Todd where the ones who where the most remarkable. The others like I said, John McGuinness because he was also on his stock bike. Happy everyone got his laps in Michael Dunlop, Nathan Harrison, Conor Cummins and James Hillier who was far behind the eight ball last TT on that Yamaha, but swinging your program around is always possible on 12 months and if they aren't to stubborn you can ask some things at "Ten Kate Racing" who used to build World Championship winning Honda's and are now into developing Yamaha parts. submitted by OxyC377 to RoadRacing [link] [comments] |
2023.03.30 01:19 flyinghorseduck 120 Items in a Hag's Lair
Use a d120 to see what you discover!
Roll | Result |
1 | A little iron horse figurine. If held by a creature that tells a lie it grows white hot, dealing 1d10 fire damage per turn |
2 | A bird's cage containing a wererat. |
3 | A bottle of troll's blood. If you drink it you regain 10 hit points at the start pf each of your turns for a minute but you are poisoned for an hour |
4 | Black Flame Candle of Hopus: The character that lights the candle draws the ire of all cats (and cat based races) and frightens all children that seem them for 24 hours |
5 | A petrified gazer. |
6 | A mirror that shows a clown (or some scary thing) standing behind you. It isn't really there, and it doesn't seem to interact with you, but is very creepy. |
7 | A talking skull. |
8 | A large firefly in a cage that will listen to commands. Glows red with the effect of Light. |
9 | A heavy old tome with yellowed pages and a blank cover. The book does not match the design of the surrounding books, and has a somewhat homemade feel to it. Nearly all the pages are filled with impressively lifelike sketches of an assortment of common folk, each with a smile on their face. All the drawings seem to be situated in the same village, with a single family and house appearing more frequently than any of the others. The members of that family each bear a slight resemblance to the hag. |
10 | A jar of candy wrapped in brightly colored wax paper. |
11 | A cursed gold chain necklace. Once put on it cannot be removed. When the wearer speaks a lie a link is magically removed from the chain, the link clatters loudly to the ground. Lie enough and it begins to choke the wearer. |
12 | A drum, covered in a mysterious skin. |
13 | An immortal monkey that looks normal but quickly reveals his undead nature in the moonlight. |
14 | A fist-sized gemstone to which the astral form of a trickster being is bound. Touching it allows you to see and communicate with the being. It begs that you reunite it with it's body. |
15 | A black cat sits curled up on a chair. When you approach, he remains unmoved, and trying to interact with him you find him immovable. If you attempt to sit on him/in the chair, you are cursed by the chair as the cat appears upon your lap and is the same as an immovable rod place on your knees. |
16 | Two voodoo esque dolls of other hags, with faint magic within, from when she tried to create a coven with the souls of dead hags. |
17 | An Ogre or Giants severed toe. |
18 | A crate filled with rotted children’s clothing and old toys. |
19 | A deep water well built into the room. |
20 | A spiders hoard disguised as a perfect black cube |
21 | A suit of armor that was once a man. |
22 | Six inches of orange tinted water on the floor. |
23 | A book full of delicately preserved wings from butterflies and other small insects. |
24 | A harp strung with the hair of 100 different humanoids. Plucking a string will make the harp tell the tale of that particular humanoid's fate |
25 | Star Chart: A map of the night sky in its current position, even when it's too cloudy to see the sky itself. This is an accurate, shifting map that may be used to help a lost party reorient themselves. |
26 | A set of giant steel manacles that look like they could hold a giant. |
27 | An unusually large slug in a cage that produces extremely sticky ooze. |
28 | An origami figure of a stork. Has a faint conjuration aura to it. |
29 | A cyclops’ eye that has a bite taken out of it. |
30 | Dried batwing. |
31 | The preserved, leathery head of a dwarf. |
32 | A caged rat with gleaming red eyes and a chitters that echoes inside your head; if released the rat will burrow into the nearest persons mind, eating bits of memories, thoughts and goals. The rat cannot do this while the host is under some sort of anti-magic but it doesn’t get rid of it |
33 | A glass bottle filled with a foul tasting dark blue liquid. If consumed the liquid convinces the person who consumed it that they are going to die as a result. |
34 | A skull of any local beast, a candle melting upon it. When the candle is snuffed out, the eye sockets glow red. It then materializes the rest of the body as a specter, until the eyes are gouged out. The candle will then re-ignite. While a specter, the creature is a neutral undead, and simply watches and wanders about, being all spooky. Works best as a small creature, like a cat or raven. |
35 | An Annis Hag has a huge rusty nail, the length of a forearm. The person holding it feels paranoid and cruel, but gains advantage on Perception checks. |
36 | A ball of snot-like sludge hanging from the ceiling. |
37 | A fancy paper hat which causes the wearer to attract bees, wasps, hornets, and bumblebees, which remain non-hostile until the wearer removed the hat. |
38 | A piece of chalk which when used to write a persons full name causes that person to shiver. It ceases to work once all the chalk is exhausted. |
39 | Chicken feathers sticking out of the ground in bizarre patterns. |
40 | An active mirror of life trapping. |
41 | A mannequin wearing a crusty set of fine clothes which appear to have been soaked entirely in blood which has now dried completely. There are no visible stains on the mannequin. |
42 | A neatly organized tackle box containing a collection of human fingers and toes. |
43 | A cage with the skeletal remains of two small humanoids, the hand of one clutching the hand of the other. |
44 | A small child, apparently unharmed. |
45 | A large white table cloth that can be used to set a table. When its command word is spoken it cleans itself of all stains and food, then folds itself into a neat triangle. |
46 | A pair of slippers that automatically adjusts to be as comfortable as possible for their wearer. |
47 | A scruffy, scarred pigeon that nests in the rafters. Its regular sounds are replaced by snippets of the hags voice yelling insults. |
48 | An old tarnished silver bell. Ringing it casts Toll The Dead once a day. |
49 | A child's patchwork doll, missing a button eye and stained in blood. |
50 | A cauldron that can be used as a ritual focus. When used in ritual magic, the DC goes up 1 per person (limited to 3). |
51 | A broken arrow atop a bottle of rain. Holding the bottle allows you to walk on water. Holding the arrow turns your hand to steel (you do twice the damage of an unarmed strike, but take disadvantage on tasks requiring two hands. You can pry the arrow from your hand—but careful if you take too long both your hands will turn to steel). |
52 | Dust of sneezing and choking. |
53 | The hag's kitchen is a marvel of inventive interior design, with hands that stick out of the walls, as though their owners were forced into the stone itself. The hands hold cups, cutlery, a set of keys, a hat, a dark cloak and hanging vegetables. |
54 | A strange jar of coloured jelly. Upon closer inspection, you find it is a tiny-sized ooze or oblex in a jar. |
55 | A picture book with seemingly no story, only vivid illustrations of children running in the woods. Flipping back and forth reveals that the children seem to move when not watched, and there’s something they’re running from |
56 | A cursed ring depicting a smiling Fox that gives advantage on deception and acrobatics checks but will sever the finger off after 1d12 uses. Cannot be removed without magical means |
57 | Bones from humanoid hands which have been fastened together into a headdress. |
58 | An ivory comb, inset with swampy green stones, that causes anyone who uses it to make their hair grow uncontrollably and try to strangle them |
59 | A display case of flattened beast ears arranged in such a way that a distant observer may mistake it for a butterfly display. |
60 | A journal by a young lass from a hundred years ago. The entries are positive, optimistic, romantic. Somewhere in the her late teens she falls in love for a fellow and at the same time she's visited by nightmares, headaches and visions. Strangely the visions darkly warn her that her lover is dangerous, something she refuses to believe even when other things she sees in them come to pass. She writes that she plans to run away with him before the journal abruptly ends. A knowledge check might reveal that the symptoms she describes are signs of a changeling coming into her power on the path to becoming a hag. |
61 | An almost person-sized hourglass dangling from a rope tied to the ceiling. In place of sand, tiny teeth of all shapes and kinds flow between the two bulbs, each one glowing with a faint red light. The flow of the device switches directions at random times for nobvisible reason, with no bulb ever holding all the teeth. |
62 | Glass orb containing the souls of screaming children. |
63 | Leather wading boots, made from an unidentifiable leather, that allows the wearer to walk on water, but slowly turns the water they walk on into a swamp |
64 | A shelf of shoes: fond mementos of the humanoids (at least the most delicious ones) the hag has eaten. |
65 | A freshly baked pie, its crust perfectly buttered. |
66 | A male human's foot. There's nothing magical about it though, she hasn't gotten to that project yet |
67 | A purple glazed donut with sprinkles. When you eat it, it switched your highest and lowest stat for one hour, or in heavy moments of exertion, such as combat, ten rounds. |
68 | A plant pot containing a Shrieker that screams when you touch it. |
69 | A collection of clear glass bottles with tiny models of houses, ships, wagons, and things inside them. On closer inspection the tiny things are real and even have tiny people trapped inside, living dejectedly. |
70 | The still beating heart of some unknown humanoid. |
71 | A copper ring in the dirt that has a rat's chewing marks in it. |
72 | Eyes of various creatures. |
73 | Seven jars filled with blood. One of them has recently been emptied. |
74 | A life size "voodoo" fetish that looks eerily like one of the PCs. |
75 | A shattered mirror. The mirror shows a decaying and zombie-like version of the players, but a beautified version of the hag. |
76 | A taxidermy beholder being used as a chandelier. |
77 | A stomach and intestines hung on the wall, with a mouth connected to one end, and the other end leading into a barrel (I don't recommend opening the barrel). It must be fed regularly or it will jump off the wall and begin eating everything. |
78 | Erikkson the Philosophical Scarecrow. This scarecrow sits motionless in a part of the room, but will animate when he deems it necessary. He loves to eat straw (and flesh), and loves to tell riddles. He especially loves it when his riddles win him the flesh of others. But he doesn't cheat. He is a genuine and fair scarecrow. He wont eat any more than has been agreed on. If he says he will play riddles for a PC's hand, then he will keep his word. He also LOVES to talk about the metaphysical nature of the world. |
79 | An eyeball in a tube of yellow viscous fluid, sealed with a cork. The eye moves and looks around. |
80 | Eye of newt jar. Half full. |
81 | An aged drawing of the current PCs that entered the lair. |
82 | A chest with an ungodly amount of sweets. |
83 | A jar with an overweight toad crammed into it, that sings when lifted. |
84 | A stack of love letters written in Abyssal penned by a demon who apparently was smitten by the sight of the hag during a planar jaunt. Appears that the interest was unrequited. |
85 | Paintings and sculptures of prominent townspeople. |
86 | A large alembic which is currently distilling a medium ochre jelly. |
87 | Half of a beehive covered in Infernal writing. When the honeycomb is broken, an Imp is summoned. |
88 | An undead toad in a glass jar with a miniature Sphere of Annihilation in its mouth. |
89 | A dresser whose drawers are overflowing with loose hairs. A player who searches through the hair will find a vial of antitoxin. |
90 | A pin board of insects found in the swamp or Underdark, like strange beetles. |
91 | A wooden chest with a beating heart in it. |
92 | A basin of murky water that is constantly scrying a young girl, possibly a changeling. Vials of three colors with a dropper sit on the rim of the basin. Dropping the blue liquid in the basin visits the girl with good luck, red delivers bad luck to a someone near her, but the black inky liquid has no apparent effect. |
93 | A massive tapestry hung from the wall. Strange symbols and stranger images fill every space, chaotically strewn about the threadwork with no apparent pattern. No centralized theme or focus can be made out, but the likeliness of several important figures and deities can be made out amongst alien creatures and other, unknown people. The tapestry is unfinished on one side, making it obvious that the project is still a work in progress. |
94 | A severed head taken from a rival long ago. The neck seeps blood from its wound, and constantly softly whispers nigh incoherently, saying all that the witch had learnt from her long-lived life, tales of old, hidden secrets and recipes long forgotten, to name a few. |
95 | A severed foot with many different types of moss and fungi growing on it. |
96 | A decorative wine glass that poisons any liquid inside of it with cyanide when a command word is spoken (cheers). |
97 | A massive bubbling cauldron. Inside it is a disgusting mixture of god knows what. |
98 | A skeleton on an elaborate wooden throne that will suddenly scream and crumple if a PC approaches it, laying a curse on that PC. |
99 | A giant cookpot carved from granite, weighing several tons. It's big enough to stew several people inside. [MaxSizeIs] |
100 | A small collection of caged rats. |
101 | Tentacle from a vampire squid. |
102 | People converted into anthropomorphic kelp. |
103 | A back scratcher made from a severed bony hand. |
104 | A small box lined with teeth, when opened it begins hopping around a chattering loudly. Can be heard by any creature within 50 ft. Strength or skill check to disarm it. On a failed skill check the target is bitten for 1D4 damage. |
105 | There is an alchemy desk with the accouterments you would expect. Eyes in jars, fingers in candlestick holders, with thin wicks coming out of the tips, animal parts, and grisly looking things you don't think about too much. Despite everything, you can't but find yourself feeling extremely hungry while examining it. |
106 | Collection of art pieces depicting each PC worst fears |
107 | A goblin in a cage that speaks common eloquently. |
108 | The shadow of a rat on the floor, which moves as a normal rat would. However, there is no rat, not even an invisible one. |
109 | A group of small children trapped in a cage. |
110 | A broom of flying that wants to avenge the hags and throws off any character once they are high up in air with it |
111 | Corrupted rings of resistance (which are cursed to grant vulnerability instead). |
112 | An apple that reveals itself to be rotten if eaten. |
113 | A overflowing jar of teeth. |
114 | A small garden growing a bunch of weird herbs. |
115 | A tattered ball gown, it’s faded green color and shredded edges indicating its impressive age. It drifts gently through the air as if carried by an invisible wind, moving haphazardly but never touching the room. Attempts to grab the dress automatically fail without the use of magic, the dress always fluttering just out of reach. Once grabbed, the dress stops permanently stops moving and shows no sign of its previously magical nature. |
116 | A cracked hand mirror, which always shows a shadowy figure to be standing behind the one looking in it. Sometimes, the figure moves. |
117 | A bouquet of flowers, suspended upside down to dry, smelling pleasantly of notes of lavender and rose buds. |
118 | A dead bird tied to the ceiling. |
119 | A starved and maimed goblin in an iron cage. He rattles the bars rather than react to the visitors. It is clear it went mad long ago. |
120 | A crude iron goblet filled to the brim with algae. Drinking the algae makes the imbiber immune to poison for 24 hours, but also makes them immune to healing potions for 48 hours |

2023.03.30 01:07 tarvolon So Long and Thanks for All the Cliffs: Rankings and Mini-Reviews from an Unplanned Bingo
This post also appears on my blog, but that version has links to my full reviews for everything, as well as the visual card. My favorite reading challenge is winding down, and for the third consecutive year, I have completed a pair of Bingo cards. I’ll talk more about my themed card in a while (probably after April 1), but today, we’re looking at my first totally unplanned Bingo card. Sure, I went through the recommendation threads last April, because those were a blast, and I planned my themed card, but apart from that, I just read what I read and then checked this week to see if I could make a full card. And perhaps one or two squares are a bit of a stretch, but I did indeed make a full card.
Continuing the bit from the last two years, I have rankings, ratings, mini-reviews, and cliffhanger notes. Do keep in mind that the rankings are just for fun and shouldn’t be taken as gospel. After all, I intentionally excluded anything I rated below 14/20, so the worst of this card is very far from the bottom of my year of reading. And it can be hard to rank books with the exact same score. I have a 20-point scale and not a 50-point scale precisely because sometimes opinions can only get so fine-grained. Ask me again next week, and I may order 16 through 22—or 2 through 5—totally differently.
Anyways, I read some great stuff, let’s get to it:
1.
“Falling Off the Edge of the World” by Suzanne Palmer, “Two Spacesuits” by Leonard Richardson, “In the Time of the Telperi Flower” by David-Christopher Galhea, “The Bone Stomach” by Ziawa Jande, “The Empty” by Ray Nayler. Categories:
Short Stories, Published in 2022, Book Club (hard)
Mini-Review: It’s common for Five Short Stories to end up on top of my list because I can just cherry-pick some of my favorites of the year. But all five of these are free—two will be discussed as part of the
April 5 session of Fantasy’s Short Fiction Book Club—and I highly recommend checking them out.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: Short stories may have ambiguous endings, but they don’t tend to end on cliffhangers.
2.
The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler.
Categories:
Standalone (hard), Published in 2022
Mini-Review: The plot description may sound like Michael Crichton, with an undersea first contact intertwined with high-stakes hacking and an AI-run slave ship, but the storytelling is anything but. It’s extremely contemplative—on the nature of consciousness and of humanity’s treatment of the Other—and written in such a way that it only gets better upon reflection.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: There’s plenty of uncertainty at the end, but it feels like a story that’s meant to end on some uncertainty and not one that’s waiting for a sequel.
3.
Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura, translated by Philip Gabriel.
Categories: Published in 2022,
Mental Health (hard), Standalone (hard), Indie Published (hard), Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), BIPOC Author, Family Matters
Mini-Review: The pacing of a school novel, but without the school, Lonely Castle in the Mirror stars a group of tweens whose individual traumas have kept them out of their local middle school but who find each other in a portal world. A slow read but an easy one, this dives brilliantly into adolescent mental health, making it not just my favorite YA novel of the year, but one of my favorite 2022 novels full stop.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: Another standalone?
4.
Babel: An Arcane History by R.F. Kuang
Categories: *
Historical SFF, Standalone (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), BIPOC Author, Published in 2022, Family Matters
Mini-Review: This one is an actual school novel, set in a fantasy Oxford whose translation magic powers the British Empire, and provides an unflinching portrait of colonialism. And as fascinating as the linguistic magic was, the highlight for me was a lead character grappling with a place that has given him his heart’s desire but that will never fully accept him as one of their own—nor will they refrain from using his gifts against his native land.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: If I keep reading this many standalones, it’s gonna ruin the whole cliff severity bit.
5.
Dust and Light by Carol Berg
Categories:
Family Matters (hard), Book Club (hard), Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), Mental Health (hard)
Mini-Review: If you’ve read Carol Berg, you know to expect tight focus on a lead who will go through absolute hell before coming out on the other side. This one sets up a neat puzzle with a lead whose magic art gives him knowledge others would like hidden, and there’s no lack for danger along the way.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: This is a duology and should be read as such. The cliffhanger isn’t as bad as others I’ve read, but it still sets up a major step into the unknown.
6.
Neom by Lavie Tidhar
Categories:
Non-human Protagonist, Indie Published (hard), Published in 2022, Mental Health, No Ifs Ands Or Buts
Mini-Review: It’s a short novel that flits through a surprising number of perspective characters, feeling more like mythology in a futuristic context than like a traditional sci-fi (never mind the robot main character). But it’s a beautiful and touching read that deserves more attention.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: Reads like a standalone, even though there’s at least one other novel (Central Station) and other stories in this universe.
7.
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
Categories:
Book Club (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), Historical SFF (hard), Anti-hero, BIPOC Author, Family Matters
Mini-Review: This is Chinese historical fiction with a thin veneer of magic, but both the magic and the politics are secondary to an exploration of several characters who don’t fit into their culture’s expectations of their gender. It's intensely character-driven and altogether fascinating.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: This is a duology and leaves plenty to do for the second book, but there’s enough payoff in the first to make it feel worthwhile by itself.
8.
Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo
Categories:
BIPOC Author, Cool Weapon, Published in 2022, Revolution or Rebellion.
Mini-Review: Traveling companions swap larger-than-life stories during their time on the road. And then they experience some larger-than-life stories. Despite the mortal danger, this feels like a small-scale piece, and it’s a gorgeous one.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: This is the third book in a novella series that’s explicitly meant to be readable in any order. The main characters carry over, but there’s no cliffhanger.
9.
The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers
Categories:
LGBTQIA List, Book Club (hard), Family Matters, Non-human Protagonist (hard), Mental Health (hard)
Mini-Review: And here is an undoubtedly small-scale piece, as a group of people from various non-human races have to deal with unexpectedly prolonged proximity after an emergency leaves them bunkered down together at a rest stop in space. Recommended for fans of character-driven sci-fi, especially ones who don’t mind the society-scale problems left unresolved while the small-scale problems are addressed.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: Again, this is part of a series, but many characters come and go—this one feels readable as a standalone.
10.
A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow
Categories:
Award Finalist, Book Club (hard), Author Uses Initials, Cool Weapon
Mini-Review: How do you rate a very fun, fast-paced fractured fairy tale that you’ll blow through in no time but forget about in a month? It’s hard for me to call this an essential read, but it is so good at what it does, with a lot of humor and a few moments of real poignancy.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: Another novella series where each is meant to be readable as a standalone.
11.
Iron Truth by S.A. Tholin
Categories:
Weird Ecology (hard), Self-Published (hard), No Ifs Ands Or Buts, Family Matters.
Mini-Review: This is a giant hunk of epic sci-fi/horroromance, as a woman crash-landed on an inhospitable planet tries to find her brother, while a military leader and his squad seek to retrieve the secrets from a disappeared ship, and an even greater danger lurks underneath it all. This takes some patience, but the payoff is real—a well-deserving winner of the first SPSFC.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff Severity: The main plot resolves, but in a way that asks a whole lot of questions of the sequel.
12.
The Last Gifts of the Universe by Rory August
Categories:
Self-Published, Published in 2022 (hard), Standalone (hard), Family Matters, Mental Health (hard).
Mini-Review: A fun sci-fi story about excavating dead civilizations—to hopefully find the secrets behind their death—turns into an exploration of grief with a surprisingly touching romantic subplot. Strong (and short!) character-driven space opera.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
13.
City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Categories:
Antihero, Standalone (hard), Mental Health (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), Published in 2022.
Mini-Review: A mosaic novel about a revolution in a weird fantasy city, with a whole host of wildly self-interested characters working at cross-purposes. The writing is engrossing and the politics are fascinating, although there aren’t many characters who are especially sympathetic.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff-Severity: Another standalone!
14.
Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki
Categories:
Wibby Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), Book Club (hard), Standalone (hard), No Ifs Ands Or Buts (hard), Family Matters (hard), BIPOC Author.
Mini-Review: The tight character focus on a trans violinist running away from home makes this worth the read, as do the lush Californian setting and outstanding descriptions of both music and food. A sci-fi subplot and an ending that’s more than a bit too neat detract from the overall package, but the strengths are enough to make this well worth the read.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff Severity: Another standalone!
15.
The Magazine of Science Fiction & Fantasy, March/April 2023, edited by Sheree Renée Thomas
Categories:
Two or More Authors (hard), Five Short Stories (hard)
Mini-Review: 16 stories, along with some poetry and book reviews, and nearly all of them are good. The Black Mirror-like “Piggyback Girl” and the whimsical “The Weremouse of Millicent Bradley Middle School” stand out from the rest, but there are a couple entertaining fairy tales, an excellent piece of sword-and-sorcery, a novelette about a cat buying a dragon, and plenty more fun.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: More short stories—some of these actually connect to existing universes (including the Neom world), but they’re readable on their own.
16.
The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik
Categories:
Urban Fantasy, Features Mental Health, Family Matters, Published in 2022.
Mini-Review: Pays off on so many of the seeds planted in the first two books, with more than one absolutely outstanding sequence featuring edge-of-your-seat tension and buckets of thematic depth. But it’s a bit uneven, with a slow and frustrating start and an ending that felt a little too neat. Definitely worth the read for fans of the first two but probably isn’t for anyone who didn’t enjoy A Deadly Education.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Last book in a trilogy, so it ends things. You can’t really start here though.
17.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel
Categories:
Published in 2022, Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey, Family Matters
Mini-Review: I expected beautiful prose and excellent character work across all four timelines, and I got good prose and good character work. Some of the pandemic sections felt a hair too on-the-nose, but there was plenty to get me invested. The science fiction elements generally worked fine, though it’s not a book that really breaks new ground on plot. Overall, it’s a solid read, though not one where I totally understand the “best of the year” hype.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: This is readable as a standalone, but I have been told it is loosely connected to other books in the same world.
18.
The Hand of the Sun King by J.T. Greathouse
Categories:
Shapeshifters (hard), Author Uses Initials (hard), Family Matters (hard), Award Finalist (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), Book Club (hard).
Mini-Review: This is structured almost like four related novellas, with each section rising to its own climax before skipping ahead to the next step in the character’s journey. The main character progresses nicely, and there’s enough plot development to make for an intriguing setup, though there’s plenty left to do in the sequel.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Another one that makes a lot of progress but leaves lots and lots of work for the second in the duology.
19.
Dead Silence by S.A Barnes
Categories:
Set in Space, Book Club (hard), Mental Health (hard), Standalone (hard), Published in 2022 (hard), Author Uses Initials, No Ifs Ands Or Buts.
Mini-Review: This promises a haunted house in space and delivers a haunted house in space. Even as a relative horror neophyte, I was able to predict most of the plot, but the atmosphere is good enough to make it a plenty engaging read regardless.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
20.
Dead Star by Simon Kewin
Categories:
No Ifs Ands Or Buts, Self-Published, Set in Space (hard), Revolutions or Rebellions (hard), Family Matters.
Mini-Review: This is a fast-paced, planet-hopping adventure about digging into the secret history beyond the sudden and mystifying rise of a small religious sect to galactic hegemony. The villains are a bit over-the-top, and I’d have liked to see more of the story in the first book, but it’s short and very hard to put down.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: This is the worst cliffhanger on the card. It reaches a waystation on the full trilogy arc, but so many of the driving questions are left for the sequels.
21.
Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire
Categories:
Revolutions and Rebellions, Book Club (hard), LGBTQIA List, Mental Health (hard).
Mini-Review: It’s a really touching found family story in which a horse-loving intersex protagonist finds a home in the portal world of the Hooflands, but with a rushed and uninspiring revolution filling out the plot. The description of childhood bullying and cultural expectations of femininity calcifying as early as elementary school are all too real and expertly done. And if the ending doesn’t maintain the level of quality, the beginning is still enough to recommend it.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Deep into a full series, but I believe it’s meant as an alternate entry point. I’m not sure I buy it as an alternate entry point, but the story is mostly self-contained, with the inevitable connection to the rest of the universe.
22.
A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark
Categories:
Set in Africa (hard), Urban Fantasy (hard), Shapeshifters (hard), Book Club (hard), Author Uses Initials (hard), BIPOC Author.
Mini-Review: Stunning worldbuilding, mediocre mystery plot. Like many of the 15/20 stories, there’s a five-star element and a three-star element mixed together. Here, the magic-infused, steampunk alt history Cairo is the true star, carrying a mystery that’s otherwise the dashing protagonist jumping from action sequence to action sequence.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: It’s a detective story in a world where the same detective has other stories. No problem reading it by itself.
23.
The Past is Red by Catherynne M. Valente
Categories:
Author Uses Initials, Book Club (hard).
Mini-Review: This is an expansion of an award-winning novelette with a fascinating and unique narrative voice. It takes place on a floating trash island after climate disaster, and like many climate stories, relies heavily on worldbuilding. For me, the worldbuilding wasn’t enough to sustain full power over novella length, but the main character’s narration kept things interesting.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: This is an expansion of a previous novelette and can easily be read alone.
24.
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez
Categories:
Cool Weapon, Published in 2022, BIPOC Author, Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), Shapeshifters, Mental Health (hard), Family Matters (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard).
Mini-Review: Gorgeous prose and a stunningly creative narrative structure buttress a fairly straightforward central story long on violence and…well, long. Unlike some stories higher on my own list, it’s very easy for me to see why some have this as their top story of the year—it takes risks and has a few elements that are absolutely knocked out of the park. But it’s just too long to live on prose and structural experiments alone, and the characters and plot are competently drawn but not quite riveting. Put simply, there’s some exceptional work here, but there are too many slow spots.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
25.
Rose/House by Arkady Martine
Categories:
Name in the Title, Standalone (hard), Mental Health (hard), No Ifs Ands Or Buts.
Mini-Review: Apparently I haven’t read many stories with names in them this year, so I have to use the name of an AI house to fill out the card. It hurts me to squeeze out an entry that would’ve easily been top ten in A Desolation Called Peace, but unplanned Bingo can be capricious. At any rate, this one looks like a locked room murder mystery but reads more like a fever dream. It’s a beautiful fever dream with lots of meditation in personhood, but it’s also hard to know just what to take away in the end.
Rating:
14/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
Lessons from unplanned Bingo:
- I thought this would be easy, and I suppose I successfully completed the challenge with literally zero advanced planning, so pats on the back for me. But I had to stretch for a couple squares that I noticed in late March hadn’t been obviously filled—particularly Weird Ecology and Name in the Title. I think my choices fit the squares, but I hadn’t noted them down as fits in the immediate aftermath of reading.
- As usual, there were a couple subjective squares that could be filled by seemingly everything. Does anything I read not address mental health and family? Perhaps not. Or perhaps I wasn’t strict enough defining those squares (though my ultimate choices were excellent fits, if I do say so myself).
- On the other hand, I don’t read much urban fantasy, antiheroes, or books with cool weapons. Or a whole lot with shapeshifters, though I was surprised to see them arise more than once. Award Finalist was also tricky, as I read so many books that were currently up for awards—after all, I led the Hugo Readalong and judged for SPSFC—and I had no way of knowing at the time whether they would win.
- Unplanned Bingo didn’t really take away my enjoyment of Bingo. The logic puzzle at the end is fun, but it’s the brainstorming thread at the beginning that makes this my absolute favorite reading challenge.
- In using the same template as my recap post from last year, I was able to notice a few interesting coincidences. For instance, I had an R.F. Kuang novel 4th and my Self-Published square 12th two years running. But in general, my scores were higher this year. Either I’m getting soft with my ratings, or I’m finding more and more good books.

2023.03.30 00:11 Business_Method2375 Need Perspective Before Critical Decision
Hi guys, long term dev currently 2nd yr in college CS Bsc. severe adhd, loves building products.
Keeping it simple:
I am extremely exhausted, and overwhelmed with current state of everywhere. I’m in CA as an international student, but natively Nigerian. Consider:
in Nigeria: Major political unrest (among others) and generations old tribalism that once caused massive genocide(civil war)
in North A: political dispute (among others) looking really bad. Also increasing difficulty to freely talk about things (stiffen opinions).
Same time, there’s major threat with economy, climate change scientists giving ultimatums, major existential threat from mindless AI race.
Currently finals season, had a mental breakdown early this morning. Feel like a doomecrazy person pointing it out. (Never again)
Also, yes possible i’m overthinking it, actually that’s best case scenario and it’s fine with me. Can’t ignore it however.
I honestly just want to drop-out, set myself free and focus on building products full time.
But i don’t want to make an unnecessary impulsive decision. I understand products fail and i might need to get a job eventually to sustain. Thing is i’m an International student so dropping out nullifies my visa and i have to go back to NG.
Initially i believed “first world” countries were better and i was going to work hard, get a job, get PR. But its obvious very society has their problems.
Also, this will effectively be the 2nd time im dropping out if i do go through with it. (Didn’t regret the first though, second attempt was to get good qualifications to get better job opportunities)
Now, I came up with a plan. kindly help poke/suggest so i don’t decide on short sight.
I have professional level experience writing code in multiple languages, built like 3 products (made about $1k on one ~4 years ago). One startup Dec 2020 - May 2022(non-custodial mobile wallet + p2p exchange). 1k+ users. I’m horrible with CSS however
- I have tons of ideas. Some complex, some easy. Spent the last three months experimenting a few. But i want to spin them into businesses (the right way: user feedback, survey, etc etc. Not my first rodeo lol)
- I know a lot of them likely to fail, no issues, willing to pick lessons and move to the next
- Considering listing them on acquire.com/Tiny acquisition (or not if i can find a way to scale them)
Now, in the event that i absolutely need a job regardless of the situation, i feel:
1) Having the products (even failed) on my portfolio will help boost my value/make up for no degree
2) I will be able to get a remote job from NG at same (or close) to standard salary rates
3) Dropping out of college twice will be a red flag on my resume
In the event that i need to come back to NA (for whatsoever reason) and im applying for another visa, i feel like:
- I will get turned down cos of the record on my visa as a dropout.
Will love to hear your opinions Edit: I’m 23

Letters of Recommendation LoR 1: AP Lang teacher in 11th grade, and academic superbowl coach. Pretty close and he's a really great and funny writer. Probably 8/10
LoR 2: Science Olympiad Coach. I helped him rebuild the team after COVID and I helped bring the team from 9 to 23 members throughout HS. Not sure how good of a writer he is, but probably a 9/10.
LoR 3: Freshman Year Chem teacher, I student Aided for her my sophomore and senior year, and I have her for OBC this year. She LOVES me and calls me a genius regularly. Again, not sure how good of a writer she is, but ngl idk how much she reallyyyy knows about me. 7/10.
Interviews - Princeton: In person and went great. I got to show her pictures of my science olympiad stuff and she was really impressed. She ended the interview by saying how happy I would be at princeton. 10/10
- Dartmouth: My first virtual interview. I didnt connect with this guy as well, but I still got to let my personality shine and we had a few laughs. 7/10
- MIT: Another in person interview. Very similar to my Princeton interview but not quite as good. 8/10
- Harvard: Virtual Interview. The guy was really bland and dry. I tried my best to be charismatic but the dude was a stone wall. 6/10.
- Northwestern: Virtual again. Amazing. Lots of laughing and he was genuinely really interested in my ECs and hobbies. He even talked a bit of shit about the girl he interviewed before me. 11/10
Essays Overall I think my essays were good, with some great ones. My Common App essay focused around my journey as a leader in science olympiad and how I reformed the team from practically nothing, to a competitive team. I made it unique by tying in my childhood stuffed animal and made sure he was a relevant part to the story. 9/10 for common app essay, 7/10 overall on supps.
Decisions Acceptances: - Purdue into the honors college as a chem major (EA)
- IU, direct admit to chemistry
Waitlists: - Boston University (RD)
- New York University (RD)
- Vanderbilt (RD)
Rejections: - MIT (RD)
- Northwestern (RD)
- WashU (RD)
Additional Information: Still waiting on Princeton (was deferred in SCEA), Yale, Columbia, Harvard, and Dartmouth.
It's rough out here.
