I don’t want to give a ton of details because I don’t want anything to be too identifiable. I’m female, live in Florida, and had a freak accident. I was working, driving a company truck through a park, as part of my job. The window was open. A riding lawn mower launched a piece of wooden debris about two inches long through my open window and struck me in the forehead. I work for the county, the mower was operated by the city.
I went to the urgent care my work uses, received a tetanus shot and three stitches. I now have a visible pink raised scar on my forehead. City has assumed liability in the case. I have sent them my medical documents, a letter from the plastic surgeon the county sent me to for a consultation (saying the appearance could not be improved and giving me a 2% impairment rating due to continued tenderness and sensitivity to makeup, soap, etc), and even threw in a note from my therapist lmao.
City is offering me $1000 to close the matter. I have no idea if this is an appropriate amount and have had no luck trying to consult with a lawyer. I don’t want to hire a lawyer and end up with less money. I literally just want to know if the amount seems right, or if there’s a significant enough probable difference to merit getting a lawyer.

By Rail to Canada, no Passport Needed
The clock showed 9:30 PM, Central Standard Time, September 15, 1958. Soo Line Train 9/13 was 21 minutes behind schedule as it cruised along in the fall Minnesota night, heading into the shallow bend towards the town of Hamel. There was no need to slow down from 58 MPH (93 kph) as the approaching station was not a stop for the train on its way to Portal, North Dakota and Winnipeg, Manitoba. From Minneapolis to Glenwood, Minnesota the two trains, also known as the “Dominion” and the “Winnipeger”, ran together before being split for their final destinations. The Dominion would be picked up by the Canadian Pacific for connection to Vancouver, British Columbia the next day.
GP9 diesel-electric locomotive No. 557 lead the train with the engineer and fireman aboard, followed by cabless power unit 503B. Behind them came six baggage cars, five sleepers, three coaches, and a lounge car, not in that order. Aboard the cars were 75 passengers, about five Pullman Company sleeping car porters, three dining service employees, three mail clerks, two baggagemen, the conductor (H.M. Ratje), and two brakemen.

Steinke, was keeping an eye out on the tracks ahead. One detail was missed by both men, however. A green light supposed to mark the switch for the siding that served local businesses in Hamel was dark. In fact, although they never could have seen it, the lock had been bashed off and the switch thrown so it pointed into the siding. The lamp extinguished. At full speed, Train 9/13 rocked hard and as it hit the siding curve 120 feet later, then jackknifed across the tracks at 9:35 pm.
The Accident
Miraculously, no one was killed as the first eight cars and both locomotives derailed spectacularly. Sixteen people were hospitalized for their injuries among the dozens treated at the scene. Witnesses in Hamel reported the crash impact felt like an earthquake, calling in to the Hennepin County Sheriff to notify them of the disaster. The Sheriff’s emergency calls were answered by Civil Defense rescue teams and six fire departments within thirty minutes to begin the process of extracting those unable to escape the cars. Uninjured patrons were bussed back to Minneapolis by the Soo Line for the night, to figure out ways of getting them on to their destinations.
It was during the rescue efforts that a Hamel Fire Department firefighter noticed the damage to the switch lock that prevented tampering. While it was locked to point into the switch rather than the main line, he noticed that the shackle of the lock had clearly been battered open before being re-closed. Investigation by police and ICC officials also disclosed that someone had tried to batter the lamp’s connecting bolt so it could be rotated to give a false ‘clear’ indication. When that had failed, someone had apparently settled for extinguishing it. Five hours before Train 9/13 came through Hamel, about 4:30 PM, the local track maintenance foreman had inspected the line. He reported the switch had been set correctly at the time but could not remember if the lamp was lit yet. It was fueled twice a week, having been topped off three days before.
The Suspect, the official Verdict, and the Aftermath.
By the first of October railroad police were seeking a man known to peddle sewing needles door-to-door in the Hamel area. He was in his fifties, stoop-shouldered, an ‘eccentric dresser’ who wore a flap-eared cap. Local residents had noticed the man in the area of the siding earlier in the evening but thought nothing of it at the time. Police apparently failed to locate him, or cleared him of wrongdoing, as no further remarks on this suspect appear in the newspapers.
On December 17, 1958 the Interstate Commerce Commission officially rendered its report on the incident. After examining the crew, witnesses on the ground, passengers, and the incident scene itself, they concluded the crew was not at fault for the accident. The ICC official accident cause was listed as malicious tampering, by person or persons unknown, who had deliberately forced open the switch, changed its direction, and extinguished the indicating lamp. From the transportation safety end of things, it was case closed.
Engine 557 and 503B were returned to service, as did the injured employees. Rail traffic was disrupted for several weeks until the line could be fixed. Today, perhaps the last survivor is Engine 557, still operating in Hanska, Minnesota as Farmers Co-Op of Hanska No. 124.
Conclusion and Questions
In 2023 it seems highly unlikely that the September 15, 1958 derailment will ever be solved. No one died, and the newspaper headlines of the day were occupied with the tragic Newark Bay bridge accident on the Central Railroad of New Jersey that killed 48, so it quietly slipped from memory. However, that does leave us with some room to speculate on the cause.

- The ICC Got It Wrong: There was no deliberate sabotage. Railroad locks take a beating even without deliberate tampering and investigators followed a path that would absolve the company and its employees of fault for incorrectly positioning the switch. The investigation makes no remark on when the switch had last been legitimately used before the accident.
- The Peddler: A convenient target. Marginalized and possibly without a home, as he is also described as ‘dirty-faced’, it would be convenient to latch onto a sighting of him near the switch as an explanation. We’re given little motivation to why he might have tampered with the switch. However, after examining several cases like this, there often doesn’t seem to be much motivation amongst those apprehended. Children playing around, wanting to see the train wreck, without any more information its hard to say much more.
- Someone Else: Local children, teens, another resident. Someone wanted to see the train crash. Notably someone had to wield a heavy tool against the switch lock and lamp bolts, no Lockpicking Lawyer here, which would seem to point towards an adult.

Context. My friend and i have both been looking for an apartment and agreed a few months back that we wanted to move in together. We went on a bunch of viewings together. My step mothers friend had an AMAZING apartment, that was not actually on the marked due to her friend not wanting to rent to strangers, but she does want to rent.
We viewed the apartment and both LOVED it. Balcony, furnized (with good proper furniture), newly upgraded and a fireplace which, since i have family with acsess to firewood, means WAY cheaper electricity while in a electricity crisis in our county. (Also we will not wash clothing on our own bill living here). It was not that expensive either, 7k each a month without electricity.
Only problem was one room being larger than the other. We both wanted the room I said if she wanted to pay extra i would back down from the room even though our landlord did not want un-even payments from us.
Now to the AITAH?
We said yes to the apartment, both seeming excited. The landlord sent in a rent permit costing her 3k. Suddenly my friend does not want to move in, saying i told her it would be max 6 k each a month. I told her it MIGHT be that, on a text right after hearing about the apartment, before we knew ANYTHING about it, not even what it looked like.
She used that to back out, last minute. She said the rooms were samller than she thought in m2 after hearing the area (After viewing them in person, mind you). She said she could not work to pay that much, to keep her grades up as well. Only mentioned the rooms and not paying thought to any of the other qualities the apartment had (like a balcony that is not normaly close to this price). She suddenly told me her alergies would be way to bad when using the fireplace. Sice we didn´t sign yet, she was able to back out.
Now we have to pay back the rent lease cost. We have to look for a new apartment we can get within a month because she already stopped her current lease. I also got stuck with the expenses for everything we bought so far sice i offerd to but it with a discount in the store i work at, and now i can´t return it due to return limit. (I know it was stupid to buy before moving in but we were legit just waiting to sign).
Now we are supposed to move in together again, i don`t want to. I don´t trust her enough to live with her anymore but her wanting a bigger room is understandable, i wanted it to so ofc. She would not afford to pay more for the bigger room with the 14k, like she wanted. I said early on the defauilt would be me getting the room and not breaking up the prize, but shearing all the storage in half in the room since it had the most space (and she has A BUCH of stuff as she keeps telling me), but if she payed more she could have all of it since she payed.(not much either, we agreed on about 50 bucks in american dollars). She agreed.
understand she says it was an accident but it feels like she realized she would not get the bigger room and then yeeted even though she was told the prize of everything and saw the rooms in person. I feel like accidents happen but this seems so irresponsible. She also kept saying the electricity prize would be to much when backing out, but the deal in this apartment would be amazing for lowering the cost of it.

Hi, Anyone smell the smoke in Nassau County and surrounding areas. Supposedly it’s from a scrap metal fire coming from NJ. The Sun I noticed was also red on Tuesday. The smell is still pronounced, was this just a one off incident or accident or purposefully done?

One of my brothers decided to have his wedding abroad. The flight time is less than four hours and my brother who I'll call Henry has given everyone lots of notice so they can plan to come along if they want. One of our brothers who I'll call Edward told Henry he won't be coming. Edward is gay. In the country where Henry is going to get married, it's illegal to be gay. Also the resort doesn't allow gay or lesbian couples to book a room together. Edward says he won't go to a county where being gay is illegal and would be uncomfortable staying at at a resort that doesn't allow gay or lesbian couples. Henry and his fiancée are doing all the wedding things, ceremony and reception abroad at the resort so they aren't having anything here. Edward says since they don't want a reception or anything here his plan is to buy them the nicest/most expensive thing in their registry to make up for not going.
I tried to talk to Edward about it because I knew Henry was upset when Edward said he wasn't coming along. I pointed out that Edward is single so he won't be affected by not bringing a plus one, and tourists (especially when they stay in the resort like we all are) don't usually have trouble with the laws the same way locals do. And any cases in the news are minor. It's a very safe country for tourists. Edward in turn told me it's none of my business and asked why I'm interfering. Was I out of line, because Edward is angry with me at the moment? All of our brothers and sisters and family are going except Edward. I know Henry was hurt so I brought it up to Edward. That was the only reason, Henry was upset and this was a once in a lifetime day for him. Was I the one who was out of line for trying to talk to Edward and convince him to come along?

After Syed fired Gutierrez, he was represented by a public defender, Charles Dorsey. Mr. Dorsey filed a Motion for Modification of Sentence. Rather than ask the Court to hold that motion in advance and raise it after, up to ten years, which is the common practice when a defendant receives a very long sentence, Mr. Dorsey didn't do that. The court ended up ruling on the Motion for Modification a couple of days after it was filed. And, of course, the motion was denied. So that's our third, ineffective assistance of counsel claim. That he should have handled that differently. - The supplement also included further points Justin Brown wanted to make about Gutierrez's failure to ask for a pleas deal.

A deadly bacteria with a roughly 50 percent fatality rate worldwide has made its way to the US Gulf Coast, where it has been declared endemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC has confirmed three cases of infection from the bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei, which can cause potentially lethal melioidosis if not treated.
“It is an environmental organism that lives naturally in the soil, and typically freshwater in certain areas around the world. Mostly in subtropical and tropical climates,” Julia Petras, an epidemic intelligence service officer with CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, told HealthDay News.
The most recent case was reported in Mississippi in January.
Two others were confirmed in the same Mississippi county in July 2020 and May 2020.
However, most of those people infected with the bacteria don’t show symptoms and develop antibodies against it, meaning many more people are likely infected, Petras said.
In all three Mississippi cases, the patient recovered.
“This is one of those diseases that is also called the great mimicker because it can look like a lot of different things,” Petras told the outlet. “It’s greatly under-reported and under-diagnosed and under-recognized — we often like to say that it’s been the neglected, neglected tropical disease.”
People are typically infected by the bacteria through open wounds or by inhaling the germs during a strong storm.
Those with diabetes or kidney and liver problems are most at risk.
“Excessive alcohol use is also a known risk factor, and binge drinking has actually been associated with cases as well from endemic areas,” Petras said.
The CDC defines an endemic as “a constant amount of that specific disease present in a geographic location, like a state or country.”
There have only ever been two reported cases in the world of bacteria spreading from person to person.
Once the bacteria is inside the body, it attacks organs like the lungs and brain and any organ with an abscess, Petras said.
“A lot of patients will have pneumonia with sepsis, and or sepsis, which is associated with higher mortality and worse outcomes,” she said.
Globally, about 160,000 cases are reported annually, with 80,000 deaths.
Petras said it’s important to diagnose melioidosis early so it can be properly treated.
“We have antibiotics that work,” she told HealthDay News. “What I’m talking about is IV antibiotics for at least two weeks, followed by three to six months of oral antibiotics.”
Patients are treated first intravenously with Meropenem (Merrem) and ceftazidime (Fortaz). Amoxicillin is then given via pills during the second phase, according to Petras.
“It’s extensive treatment, but if you’ve finished the full course and you’re diagnosed early, which is the really key thing, your outcome is probably going to be quite good,” she added.
It’s not clear how or when B. mallei got to the Gulf Coast, but scientists believe that climate change is likely a factor.
B. mallei thrives in warm, damp areas and was first found in Australia and Thailand, Petras said.

Seriously, I had narrowly avoided two separate accidents just driving to there this morning. Then I passed by another fatal accident.

Edge says his wife is an absolute genius and this is why he loves her meanwhile Chavo says he has no doubt in his mind that him and Edge will take care of those two freaks who’ve got gold that doesn’t belong to them. The Undertaker and Kane promise to inflict pain on their opponents for all of their sins in recent months, especially Edge who’s been a thorn on both their sides at times over the years. During this match, The Edgeheads try and get involved but they both receive a beating from Taker and Kane. The Champions then Tombstone Edge and Chavo at the same time and pin them to retain their titles.)
Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match for the WWE Championship:

The reason JBL is added is because Vince wants to further stack the odds against The Game by adding someone who’s been kissing his ass since coming out of retirement. Vince make’s it no secret that he despises his son in law for the way he’s disrespected him over the years. Triple H says that deranged old bastard can stack the odds as much as he wants, it won’t stop him from leaving Backlash with the WWE Championship. Triple H wins to retain his championship, last eliminating Randy Orton.)

Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match for the WWE Championship:
Triple H (c) vs JBL vs Randy Orton vs John Cena
(After WrestleMania, Triple H says the WWE Championship is the true symbol that The Game is back and better than ever! He welcomes all challenges and says he doesn’t care who he has to go through, he has no hesitation dropping anyone where they stand. Randy Orton interrupts, says he’s rightfully invoking his rematch clause and promises Triple H’s title reign will be short lived. John Cena also interrupts and says he isn’t done with Orton and at this rate Triple H because he’s got the one thing he wants, the WWE Championship! Vince McMahon announces a Triple Threat rematch at Backlash although at the end of that same Raw, Vince announces after JBL attacks Triple H that it’s now going to be a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match. The reason JBL is added is because Vince wants to further stack the odds against The Game by adding someone who’s been kissing his ass since coming out of retirement. Vince make’s it no secret that he despises his son in law for the way he’s disrespected him over the years. Triple H says that deranged old bastard can stack the odds as much as he wants, it won’t stop him from leaving Backlash with the WWE Championship. Triple H wins to retain his championship, last eliminating Randy Orton.)

I've never really understood this. Sure, she and her mother were having an argument, but her aunt couldn't have known that. Claire describes herself at this life-stage as "horrible," and I assume the black hair is meant to indicate that she was going through an edgy phase, so maybe her aunt was pretty fed up with her at that point.
But still, she'd just been in a very serious car accident and sustained several injuries including a head injury. Her aunt seems to be livid that she went home to take a shower, which was actually totally reasonable.
The police officer is also totally unprofessional. He takes a very, very brief statement while she's being treated for a head injury, he's unjustifiably harsh ("That's not the question I asked, Miss Littleton"), and he refers to the accident as a "fatality" when nobody has died.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that Claire's just a kid and has herself just survived a significant physical and emotional trauma, and that she's at risk of losing the only parent she ever knew.
Claire's is one of the weaker stories generally, and she's not my favourite character, but it really bugs me that the characters in the car accident storyline behave in ways that don't make a whole lot of sense, narratively.
And the only evidence we have that Claire was "horrible" is the black hair, black nail polish, black eyeliner and job as an ear-piercer, a combination which in mainstream mid-2000's TV presumably represented rebellion and bad life choices.
