How my builds have changed from 0-500 hours

2023.03.25 01:28 ltuzia How my builds have changed from 0-500 hours

I thought it would be interesting to keep track of changes since I recently hit 500 hours in satisfactory. I have compiled a lot of screenshots over playing the game in this time so I organized and typed a bit on here about each album. There are a few more random comments on the imgur albums linked in this post as well. Maybe other people will find it interesting hopefully as well though I mainly made this post for myself to look back on in the future.
My first save when I downloaded the game I started in grasslands. I played 21 hours or so before I abandoned the save and started over again. Most buildings are built on the ground or hanging way up in the sky because I thought to verticality would be interesting to look at... only there are no supports and it doesn't make much sense like storage. I did have fun placing some things within trees at a nearby coal source I found to expand power shortly before quitting. First save album :
Second save I played for 35 hours on it before abandoning it. It was the first save I tried using a couple mods in as well. However this was a bad idea and led me to start over again. A hour or two before I left it I had installed the first few to try out, and one of them unlocked all the recipes? I didn't mean for it to do that, and didn't see in the description it would. Opps lol. Anyways when I noticed all my auto saves were gone so it led me to restart because it was too overwhelming seeing all these choices and things I never seen before yet.
In here though I tried to take notice of the things I learned from first save like using foundations to support factories more, and not making storage way up in the air. so it is more accessible. It also includes my first covered factory, and with me experimenting with things like hiding belts more between foundations. I also tried to focus on learning more about pipes and how to place them in more aesthetically pleasing ways. The second save album is here :
The third save is my current one, although I think I might restart it soon again, or just spend time to delete like half the map. I am still undecided on which. In this one I started in the northern forest. I really really like it here and probably will always start again here in the future. I have over 300 hours in it right now, and the rest of the 150ish comes from playing with a very close friend I tried to get into the game (around 45 hours on their save) and then some people's regular or dedicated servers.
The first thing I saw when coming down from space was being greeted by alien fauna.
One of the things I focused on this save was reconsidering my storage area to be both easy to travel to, and out of the way. So one of the first buildings I placed (and then later decorated some as I unlocked awesome shop things) was a storage area. It includes several floors, and it quite tall because I really liked the result of clipping containers through foundations. Later I changed the foundations to catwalks and I really like the result. Storage area album :
The reinforced iron plate factory was one of the first ones I built and involved things like very tightly hidden belts and lifts and many floors. It is quite large as well compared to my other builds so far. And at one point had ramp foundations 4m to access each floor that were annoying to jump up. Those were later removed and a simple hyper tube from f1 goes all the way to the top. RIPS album :
The next larger build I made is modular frames. Well besides rotors/stators which has been expanded so many times I don't think it is reasonable to show it since it doesn't resemble its original form at all anymore. Unlike how storage does... with some decorations. It is also the first time I used vehicles at all. It is to take them to where I was eventually making heavy modular frames (though the vehicle wasn't intended for that originally and only meant to bring back to storage... a very convenient thing). I believe it is 20/min in here right now. It has some more things in consideration like floor access that I learned to do better from RIPs and previous saves. Modular frames album :
At some point around this time I started making a huge sky road. It.. turned out very very eyesore. I want to delete it and rethink my transport. Album :
An attempt to make compact build... featuring coal towers. Like my idea from the previous save with the refineries before I abandoned it. It turned out badly, but I am much much better at the game now I feel like and have a more in depth understanding of belts and pipes and building techniques.. so I want to come back and redo this as I envisioned it properly at some point as well as upgrade the miners. Album :
HMF is the first time I tried to make a circular building, but I never got the production numbers I wanted. And didn't decorate it since I wanted another two or three of these circles with additional buildings nearby connected by sky bridges. Link :
In there you will see another building that did not turn out how I had in my mind. We didn't have the corner pieces. I didn't want a giant triangle top. I thought it would be so cool to have it shaped like the other 3 sides on all 4 and a diagonal corner.. however the building pieces will not allow for this. The inverted triangles do not fit where they need to so I can't make it. (I hope you add them coffee stain). It contains some HMF component production. Album :
Around this time I was able to have the opportunity help decorate someone's refineries and fuel generation. They were completely in the open and I closed them off while they worked on something else in their save. I really learned a lot about clipping stuff while doing so. Unfortunately I don't have very many images saved of this and everything is of WIP stuff and not the final result. Album of that work :
I also kind of messed around with packaged fuel for like 10 hours. I don't know why I had so much confusion doing this, but eventually I got it to work and it is still running with a sink even now over 100 hours minimum later. It is ugly though since I was testing stuff. Image :
At this point in my save I really really needed to expand power, so I ran around the map looking at fuel locations until I found one that I really liked. It was in this mushroom crater area. However what I didn't know when I started it is that it is going to be reworked... and considering what they they did to spire coasts that is going to make any building there unable to work what what I imagined for it... so I abandoned it only partway complete and hooked up. Though I connected to main grid. It is quite large and was going to produce something like 70k power or 60k idk. I am so sad to abandon it though because I loved the thought of a giant middle building with lots of generators across the biome with pipes hidden under the ground. Album link here :
So I ended up with some power so I went to work on aluminum (mainly batteries) stuff... which I ended up accidentally building in yet another map rework area. So that got abandoned too lol. Features some very closely placed foundations to avoid clipping into trees and branches and other parts of the geography. A very challenging place to build, but I imagined it to be soo cool looking to see an army of drones coming out of the forest.
Of the parts of the battery production I finished I fully decorated and finished the silica I needed for it. This place is honestly my most favorite build of everything I made. I took so many lessons from previous designs when making it. Like considering how I will travel inside, how it looks from outside. The truck station unload/load issue with multiple stations. The transport of silica (once battery production was up and running) etc. The truck entrance was to take overflow elsewhere. The drones where going to transport silica to batteries but for now has a conveyor belt. The outside of it looks very interesting and structurally sound to me. Also it is avoiding the natural trees in very close ways so it looks like it has been built there for a while and trees grew around it. And it just barely avoids the toxic gases inside. Absolute favorite factory of mine! Link here!
And then I still needed to eventually expand more fuel yet again, so I started working on this area which I think is safe from reworks? At least it better be LOL. The idea I had was hovering power generators with several towers. I am only using one oil node right now and I will NOT be building another 8 of these and everything else twice more to use the rest of the oil here. The towers themselves are too much work to hide pipework as best as you can to keep the hovering sci-fi feel I wanted. Very WIP to more finished stuff at the end of the album. However it is still my current project on my save so it isn't fully complete yet. Album link :
And finally my last project that I just finished a day or two ago (I needed a break from fuel piping on my save). The aluminum plant on a dedicated server I was invited to. It was really challenging to work with the resource nodes they already were extracting form. So I had to use some very far away ones. However It turned out nicely and I really played around with power switches a lot in here. Resulting in a modular power control of the factory outputs. Very happy with how it turned out, but the wiring was a pain to figure out the first time. The decoration is very open aired inspired. All together I think I spent around 66-95 hours building this, the bus, the train line, and supporting factories for it (silica, rubber, batteries, ai limiters, copper ingots). Album here :
And now I am at 505 hours played on steam. So much time, but I still feel like I can change things. Lots of things I would like to try more of in the future. But I really like my progress so far. Maybe I write another update post again in the future.

2023.03.25 01:28 jac0the_shadows Interesting ideas that journalists could explore about Sanderson

We all know that Wired controversy, which I will not link to. Rather, I'd like to lay the groundwork for some potential explorations into Sanderson that might be worth an actual in-depth investigatory piece that Sanderson would not be able to answer in a podcast. I will start off with three themes raised in the infamous article. I hope that others follow up with their own ideas.

1) How does Sanderson's interrogation of religion in his own work reflect a potential struggle with Mormonism? - This is an issue that the author very much wanted to get at, though instead fell into personal attacks, calling Sanderson "extremely Mormon" and what not. However, that is far from the truth, especially insofar as critics bring up the Mormon analogues in his writing. In Elantris, we see the character Hrathen driven by logic and love of order embrace an "ends justify the means" approach to converting an entire nation in order to "save" it. The effort involves bribery, kidnapping, genocide, etc. However, at the end of the day we see that there is eventually a line too far for Hrathen, once the last resort genocide is instead revealed to be part of a planned "glory to Jaddeth" power move. A great many crimes have been justified as being part of a grander holy plan, with Christianity -- including Mormonism -- taking part. Given that Hrathen came from a lawful evil character in one of Sanderson's role playing games, an exploration of how much of this was inspired from personal reflection could be elucidating.
Likewise, my Sanderson-critic friend critiques the Church of the Survivor as a Mormonism stand in. Yet if that is the case, Sanderson has gone on record a number of times mentioning how problematic Kelsier is. Kelsier constantly uses religion to manipulate and con his way into positions of power and an advancement to his agenda. Apparently Kelsier is even responsible indirectly for the rise of the Set, and Autonomy fan girls over him.
If all of the above are true, then it would seem that Sanderson might be trying to deconstruct his own religion and relationship with it. I personally do not know what the true answer is (i.e. I did not make the connection between Kelsier and Joseph Smith like my friend did) but such an angle could be rewarding.

2) How much of Sanderson's success is due to the man v. the moment? - Another critical angle, with the idea being that Sanderson got lucky with the advent of the MCU, GoT, and cultural desire for extended universes. Insofar as Sanderson is successful, maybe it is because of his simple prose, which might allow him success now, but not in the long term. Following this line of thought, how much does Sanderson acknowledge this possibility, and how does he prepare for the end of the good times? Did his close family and friends from before have different thoughts on the likelihood of his success before he completed the Wheel of Time series?
While Sanderson has answered to some extent this question, an article length piece all in one place could be useful to those who do not religiously watch Sanderson's podcasts. Might also be topically relevant given the issues Marvel has been having of late.

3) Has Sanderson been a net boon or detriment to newer fantasy authors? - Building upon the initial kickstarter impetus of the article, Sanderson is one of the most prolific and successful fantasy authors. With his secret projects AND standard books, a casual reader could be reading only his books for years without ever reading another author's work. If this is the case, then the possibility exists that Sanderson might be sucking up all the oxygen for new writers to thrive upon. However, Sanderson likewise is using his position to fight for new creator rights against Amazon, Audible, major publishers etc. Some might view Sanderson as the Machiavellian ideal, using his great power to crush the collective good's enemies all the while creating new institutions. Yet to have so much market power rested in one creative's hands alone might do more harm than good. An investigative piece into "objective" net good v harm of Sanderson's positions, along with Sanderson's reflection on the topic could be great. The author of such an article could even sprinkle in some critiques of what's wrong with Sanderson's style, i.e. continuity over prose or some such.

In any case, these are just some ideas. Journalists at various newspapers might hopefully take a look at these and produce something new and insightful as opposed to coming to the defense of a pretty sloppy Wired writer. I do believe that there is a lot to explore related to Sanderson, even if it's not in a particularly flattering light. I hope that everyone else in and beyond the community can think up ideas to advance new articles on the topic.

2023.03.25 01:21 HiddenLayer5 How do modern networking over fiber work? How is the light modulated to transmit information?

I remember those educational toys and electronics kits where you had a microphone, some simple analog circuitry to modulate the sound into varying brightness on an LED, which was shot through a cheap plastic fiber and a speaker on the other side would play back what is received. It was super fun for nerdy kids like me and a great way of introducing kids to the concept of fiber optic data transmission.
But that can't be the way modern networking over fiber is done right? I recently bought a kit containing a pair of PCIe cards, SFP tranceivers, and a length of fiber, which combined are capable of 10 gigabit Ethernet. It was surprising just how cheap and readily available it was second hand on eBay. It works really well but I'm really curious as to how the data is modulated. Like, for a 10 gigabit link, does an LED or laser straight up pulse 10 billion times a second and each pulse is its own bit? Or does it change brightness like that fiber optic voice toy to represent multiple bits in one pulse? Does it use multiple wavelengths?
Also, are SFP and QSFP compatible in their data transmission methods to the direct fiber service that most ISPs now offer in large urban areas? Is the light modulated in the same way? Is it possible to bypass whatever device my ISP installed in my house and build my own fiber based modem/router with an SFP card? Also, why is it that 10GbE needs two fibers, one for transmit and one for receive, while the fiber from consumer ISPs is a single wire for both?

2023.03.25 00:52 Appropriate-Drive-53 Surprise medical bills... 5 years later!?

I just had two accounts in collection appear on my credit report from Global Medical Response. Each account is in collections for about $2500.
I called GMR and apparently these are for dates of service in 2018 (maybe). I don't recall using any emergency medical transport in 2018, and they didn't clarify the nature or exact dates of the services. They state that they contacted me by mail in 2018 about the bills, but the address they have on file is my mother's old home address. I have no idea how they acquired this and at the time they claim to have sent the billing notification, the home had been sold and she no longer resided there. I have no physical copy of the bill, and they never had my phone number or e-mail on file (and I checked for electronic communications from them, there are none).
To be frank, I'm not sure these bills are mine and I feel like this is kind of sketchy. Why did it take 5 years for this to show up on my credit report? I don't even know what these are and I disputed it with Experian, but I want to fight this, and get it off my credit report. I'm a little freaked out because it tanked my credit score by 100 points and I'm in the middle of searching for a new apartment. This might completely screw me over.
What do I do?

2023.03.25 00:25 paraffintrippin How do I 'spend' my CE credits to recertify?

So I completed the DevNET Foundations course today, and immediately submitted the cert number to The credits showed as 'earned' right away, but my certification expiry date did not change (I have about 80days left).
How do I spend/apply these credits to my CCNA to recertify? I did the old track CCNA (CCENT + CCNA) and had the covid extension. When I go to I see both 'CCNA' and 'CCNA Routing and Switching', along with my CCENT, but they all show the same expiration date as before.
Do I need to do anything here or is it all automatic from here out and I just need to wait?

2023.03.25 00:18 ElmiiMoo Midori and Rei?

After playing through one of Your Time To Shine's Mishima routes, you get a hazy image of a 13th player in the death game, who had no memories but named himself "Rei", meaning "zero" or "nothing". This person physically cannot survive in YTTS, and you never even see them. This is consistent with the "person die = you forget them" gimmick of YTTS's island, but its interesting how you can literally never interact with him, except through a diary at the end of that Mishima route.

While playing through Midori's death section again, I noticed that he said his favorite number was zero. By chekhov's gun, we can guess that that wasn't just a random detail that Nankidai threw in. Considering Rei's mysterious teasing in YTTS, i think its likely he'll get some spotlight in 3-2, and maybe that comment by Midori was foreshadowing of some relationship between them.

Anyone have any theories on their possible connection?

2023.03.24 23:43 Write416 How Might Barry Still Get Away With It?

How Might Barry Still Get Away With It?
After Barry's full-on dark turn in Season III, it now feels inevitable the series will wrap up on a note that's just pitch fucking black. Given how emotionally bleak the show's already gotten this past season, anything else would seem either false or tepid.
I can think of only two workable outcomes to achieve such a conclusion: Either Barry is fully destroyed, or gets off scot-free, rubbing the audience's noses in the injustice of it. The character simply escaping to a survivable-if-dull life somewhere, forcing him to live with his guilt under an assumed identity, managing a Cinnabon in Omaha, Nebraska - thus dramatizing how even "getting away with it" doesn't mean you got away with it - simply won't cut it. IMO, only the extremes can work thematically, at this stage, with Barry's destruction speaking to how perpetrating violence infects your whole life (which the creators having explicitly discussed this as being a big part of Season III) or the outrageousness of Barry getting away with it speaking to the idea that people, sadly, do not get what they deserve (a motif that runs through the whole show).
Obviously, any path leading to death, or life in a supermax, works for the first. But what about the second? Given the premise of the show, "getting off scot-free" can't merely mean outsmarting the authorities and retiring to live the good life someplace. This route must include Barry pursuing, and succeeding in pursuing, his true "purpose" of becoming an actor. Now, how the hell can the show do that?
This raises a fun thought experience, IMO: From where we left off in the last season finale, how could Barry manage to turn the tables and wind up continuing his trajectory to becoming a rising star in Hollywood?
My theory?
Work back from the conclusion: To wind up re-establishing himself as a "solid Los Angeles citizen" (as Rick Dalton puts it in Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood), Barry would not only have to be cleared of any criminal charges, but be completely exonerated. No technicalities will suffice here. The evidence against Barry is i) Cousineau's word, ii) the fact he entered Daddy Moss's home pointing a gun at him, and iii) the recording of Cousineau saying Moss "knows you killed Janice" with Barry not disputing this, but instead seeming to head inside to kill Moss in response. All of this must disappear or be explained away.
The most important element of this case - that must fully disintegrate for Barry's reputation to be restored - is Gene's testimony. No one is going to believe Barry was wrongly accused if his friend and mentor is out there telling stories about Barry taking him hostage, holding him at gunpoint, driving him out to the desert to murder him, threatening the lives of his son and grandson, and then confessing to him in their makeup trailer. Thankfully, from a story point of view, it is easy enough to imagine scenarios in which Gene might recant (threats, intimidation, etc.). We've already seen a version of this!
What's needed then is a story: To get himself truly off the hook, Barry needs a narrative that makes sense of the tape and his decision to enter Moss's home - pointing a gun at him - that paints Barry as a the victim while discouraging anyone from digging into his past.
This may seem far-fetched, but the tape of Barry's exchange with Gene - assuming Gene was wired - isn't nearly as clear cut as it may seem at first glance. As you'll note in the transcript below, right up until the moment Gene says the words "he knows you killed Janice," Barry is behaving as if this entire thing is insane - like Gene has simply lost his mind. Then, once Gene says this, Barry immediately shifts gears, stops the conversation and tells Gene to leave.
Imagine Gene is coerced and cajoled, once again, into going along with Barry's lies. Barry could claim that he had realized in this moment that Gene was wired and - since both he and Gene knew Barry wasn't involved in Janice's murder - Moss must have threatened Gene to force him say these things in an attempt to get Barry to make incriminating utterance. Barry and Gene could then claim that Moss had become obsessed with Barry and had been harassing Gene leading up to this - the grieving father gone mad. Finally, Barry could claim he had figured out Moss was inside the house either listening to the wire or laying in wait, so he thus entered the home to confront Moss about threatening Gene, not to kill anyone. This might constitute breaking and enter or an assault charge, but not murder, nor attempted murder.
Is this believable? Even with Gene's participation, it might seem like a stretch. Almost certainly this is enough - absent other evidence - to avoid a more serious criminal conviction, but probably not enough to save Barry from infamy. But imagine we add another layer.
What if Gene recanting gets Barry out on bail? After all, the reason to refuse Barry bail would've been the claim that he had threatened a possible witness into silence (i.e. Gene himself). How might Moss react to this? Let's say he truly does become obsessed with Barry this time. Let's say he repeatedly gets himself into (even relatively minor) trouble in attempts to ensnare or implicate Barry. Let's say this further escalates into a physical confrontation in which Moss attacks Barry and winds up in a standoff, holding Barry at gunpoint. Imagine Moss, falling apart, bereft at the loss of his daughter, refuses to give up his gun, forcing police to kill him.
Now, at that point, with Gene recanting, Barry claiming that he'd reacted as he did the night he was arrested because he knew Gene was wired, all charges dropped, Moss's named smear, and huge news coverage of the standoff painting Barry as the victim of an unstable former cop and grieving parent - with all that - I don't think it's the slightest bit hard to imagine a narrative where Barry comes out looking shiny.
To me, the biggest problem going this route isn't even story, per se. The problem is, as I mentioned, we've already seen a version of the first part of this - Gene being threatened into covering for Barry. This could easily feel repetitive. That said, if the writers choose to go this route, I think we can rest assured they'll come up with a fresh feeling scenario for how Gene might be pulled back into Barry's "Big Lie."
Personally, I think this would make for a much more dynamic final season and a more surprising, ironic and painful ending than drudging forward to Barry eventual death or conviction.
BARRY: Do you have a gun on you? You have a fucking gun? You have a fucking gun?
GENE: No! No!
BARRY: What the fuck is this?! What is wrong with you?!
GENE: He lives right there.
BARRY: You're in front of his fucking house! Are you nuts?
GENE: I don't know what else to do.
BARRY: What, you're gonna go in there and shoot him?
GENE: You don't know what this man is capable of. Barry, he's gonna ruin me. He's gonna destroy everything I worked for.
BARRY: Get the fuck outta here. I'm gonna go talk to him. You get the fuck outta here.
GENE: No! No! You can't talk to him. That man only wants revenge. You cannot talk to him. He's crazy. He knows everything, Barry. He knows you killed Janice. I'm so sorry. Just... let's get in the car and go.
BARRY: Get outta here. Get outta here.
GENE: No. No, no, no, please. You can't go. No, no, no, no. Listen to me, Barry. Please don't go in there.
BARRY: Get the fuck outta here.
GENE: Don't go in there.
BARRY: Get outta here. Get outta here!
GENE: No, no! No, don't go in there. Don't go in there.

2023.03.24 23:40 SirSaif Passed my CFI Initial Checkride!

Passed my CFI Initial Checkride!
Passed my CFI Initial Checkride Today! It was a lot of work and studying. I want to thank the folks in this sub for helping me with advice and guidance. u/TxAggieMike absolutely went above and beyond in assisting me with teaching some lessons as well the finer details. Shout out to you sir! I will include the write up below.
Started with all the basic paperwork and endorsements which was all good. Some of the first things we went over was FOI's and professionalism. This was very much a conversation and I didn't really repeat things from rote memory. He asked me if I've ever had more than one CFI which I did and he asked me to identify some of their pros and cons as well as what kind of a student I was throughout my PPL, IR and CPL. I tied this together with Professionalism and mentioned how I would like to be the kind o CFI who exhibits those behaviors and principles. I also went over all the different responsibilities and he asked me what I would be looking for in a student ready to solo. I told him I would be looking for the student to fly with a level of consistency and accuracy with little to no input from me. He suggested I get a handheld radio because it can be comforting to the student if they start to get a little uncomfortable in the pattern. He talked about a story where a student solo pilot got a little spooked from all the building traffic and just flew away and landed in a field (plane and pilot were unharmed). We had a laugh about that. To emphasize his point, it would good practice to have a radio handy.
He also asked me about the difference between an aviation instructor and ground instructor. Then we talked briefly about Assessments and Critiques since one of my knowledge test deficiencies was on this. I talked mainly about how most of the critiques I would be giving would be oral but also talked about the benefits to a written critique. We moved on shortly after discussing this.
He then asked me about my medical certificate (1st Class) and he asked me about the expiration date and what happens after that. I talked about how it still remains a 1st class but the privileges are what changes. I proceeded to explain the remaining validity for the medical and he was satisfied. I think he wanted to see if I understood the main point about the class and the associated privileges.
We spent some time on Runway Incursion Avoidance. I listed out all of the main ingredients but he added that I should utilize graphics and videos to emphasize how serious it can be. We talked about Tenerife as well as some more recent cases. I defined Hot Spots and showed him where to find the information on it in FF. He said he spends an entire hour teaching Runway Incursion Avoidance.
I taught 3 lessons. The first one was seemingly the easiest but I was tripping up a little. He asked me to draw the different legs of the traffic pattern which I did but then he asked if I was sure these were the legs? I started to scratch my head a little and then he asked where I could find out more info. I said the AIM so I cracked it open and looked at the diagrams. I was looking at the diagrams with more complex runways and was getting a little lost in all the verbage and labels. I flipped back one page and there it was. I had confused Upwind leg with Departure leg. For some reason, I think it got lost on me that these were two different legs when I thought they were interchangeable names. So I corrected my drawing and will never forget that. I was sweating a little here (not literally).
Taught weight and balance. Listed out the terms, defined them. Explained effects of more weight vs less weight as well as fore/aft cg. I used the loading graphs (way i was always taught) which is the longer way to do it. And one of my numbers were off by enough to put out CG right on the limit which seemed odd because it wasn't a complex scenario. So I went back through the numbers and he asked if there was another way to get the moments besides the loading graph charts. I said I would use the Arm measurements and when I did, I was off on my baggage moment by a whole 1000. SO i adjusted and it moved the CG back just over an inch, then it made sense.
Next I taught Airspace. This was relatively straightforward, I didn't really have any hiccups here.
We talked about logbook entries and endorsements. He didn't give me any complex scenarios and he asked me where I could look to find out about Endorsements, 61-65H. He had me fill out an IACRA and put in all the required hours for a PPL because he said while my cert is processing I wouldn't be able to do it through IACRA. So I crack open the FAR and jot them down. After that he emphasized that its important to write down the specific FAR in the remarks for whatever training you are doing because if anything comes back on you, you'd be covered. I added to this that when doing stall practice, you should write "stall RECOVERY" and he seemed to agree with that.
I taught a maneuver lesson which was short field landing and covered the ACS standards for Private and Commercial. No biggy here.
We talked about my syllabus. I purchased backseat pilot, while it has a ton of info, I felt more comfortable with wifiCFI. I like the layout of the syllabus and the interactivity of the ground school. He asked about various things and I would point to where you could find it within WifiCFI. He found it to be pretty intuitive and even called his son (new CFI) and I explained it to him over the phone. Haha. He then emphasized that if I'm going to use a syllubus, make sure to actually use it but keep it flexible. I don't think he's seen or heard of WifiCFI but I think he really liked it.
Since it was absolutely raining in sheets and it was IFR at the field we did not go fly. We wrapped up the ground by creating a plan of action for out flight. We went through the remaining portion of the PTS and he wrote down the required task and then had me choose the "other" task. This was very generous of him. I think he was shot for time on the day of the flight because he had another checkride after me so we just made the flight efficient as possible. I got a letter of discontinuance and we had the flight this morning.
Our plan of action was listed as follows and It was honestly pretty uneventful. Flew everything within standards and it helped tremendously that it was early, it was cold and the air was buttery smooth. No wind at all after a week of crazy storms.
-Preflight Inspection
-Normal Takeoff
-Traffic Pattern/Rectangular Course
-Normal Landing
-Short Field Takeoff
-Straight and Level
-Slow Flight
-Steep Turns (Private and Commercial)
-Power On Stall (First Indication)
-Elevator Trim Stall
-Emergency Approach to landing
-Eights on Pylons
-Systems Malfunction (He mainly just questioned me on high oil temps and carb icing)
-Soft Field Landing
-Postflight Procedures

I gotta say I felt like I lucked out a little. The ground portion was definitely the hard part but I came prepared and that why in some instances it felt easy, but just have your material ready and know how to use it and where to find things. He didn't teach me anything, but I sure learned some things along the way.
He printed out my cert and asked me "did you teach me a lesson today?" I said yes and he pulled out a $1 bill and wrote on it "Congratulations on earning your initial CFI on March 24th, 2023. Remember, The buck stops with you!" Then he said "Don't spend it at the strip club." 😂

2023.03.24 23:25 SalaciousCrumb8 Re. Electronic Harassment: 'Rain fade' refers primarily to..

.. the absorption of a microwave radio frequency (RF) signal by atmospheric rain, snow, or ice, and losses which are especially prevalent at frequencies above 11 GHz. It also refers to the degradation of a signal caused by the electromagnetic interference of the leading edge of a storm front¹. Rain fade occurs when a signal encounters rain, snow, ice or storm in its path of propagation, which means it can affect signals if there is precipitation at t. It can affect both point-to-point terrestrial and satellite communication causing path loss, distortion, signal absorption, the introduction of noise, etc². (Source: Conversation with Bing).
Humidity can affect radio frequency (RF) signals by weakening their transmission. When there is an increase in humidity, it increases the air pressure and increases the number of water molecules in the air, leading to a weaker transmission of radio waves¹. This means that a higher humidity can weaken the signal strength while a higher temperature can enhance the signal strength of the radio waves² (Source: Conversation with Bing).
When temperatures lower, relative humidity increases, OR cold air has higher relative humidity than warm air.
Is it possible therefore to experience considerably less (and of very poor quality) RF electronic harassment in very cold climates?

2023.03.24 23:16 Middle-Bodybuilder81 G.a.l questions

Hey guys Im a new mod mechanic and have several questions G.A.L related. 1- when settings mos left to right what gap do you leave between mo and clutch when using a electronic plunger zone restrictor, not mechanical. Not sure if that makes a difference. 2- how far in and out do you set the mo roller to clutch and do you leave both rollers even. 3- do you use bumpers on car door or only hoist door. 4-do you let the safety edge cable hang off bracket on header given by gal or wire tye it to the arm. 5- do you make sure the back of the operator is level vertically or adjust that last to make sure your arm and bearing are straight and not leaning. 6- last one what would cause a clutch to make a loud click noise when door fully opens, only on certain floors.

2023.03.24 23:06 Bellgard Insights into entropy from reflections on nonduality

A standard definition of entropy from the statistical mechanics (Boltzmann) perspective is:

S = kB*ln(w)

Where S is the extensive entropy (J/K), kB is Boltzmann’s constant (1.38 x 10-23 J/K), and w is the total number of microstates corresponding to the observed macrostate.

As an example, consider an isolated box of 3 (classical) particles that can each have an integer value of energy from zero to infinity (e.g. 0, 1, 2, …). If the 3-particle system has a total energy of 2, then w = 6, because there are 6 different ways to arrange the particles such that the total energy adds up to exactly 2: [2,0,0], [0,2,0], [0,0,2], [1,1,0], [1,0,1], or [0,1,1]. Each of these individual ways to arrange the particles (e.g. [0,1,1]) is a microstate, and the box having a total energy of 2 (E = 2) is the macrostate. If we add 1 unit of energy to the box so it is now in the macrostate E = 3, then there will be 10 unique ways to arrange the particles such that the total energy adds up to exactly 3 and we’ll have w = 10, so the system will then have more entropy.

This is all fine and dandy and leads to a mind-blowing number of useful predictions and ways to quantitatively describe how macroscopic systems will (and will not) behave in nearly all scenarios, but it always used to bug me that at bottom the value of entropy of a system depends on referencing hypothetical states that could exist but in this precise moment do not exist. That always felt arbitrary and unphysical. I can point to a lump of metal and know that there physically is some amount of energy contained in it, traceable back to the precise motion and state of all the atoms and electrons (and other particles) within it. In contrast, if I want to point to that same lump of metal and ask “Physically, how much entropy is in it?” the answer would be “This much, because in principle the particles in that metal could be arranged in this many different ways (microstates), all of which would correspond to the macrostate you’re currently observing (i.e. it’s at at this temperature and this pressure).” It just feels unsatisfying that a supposed property of the universe, entropy, can only be described by referring to imaginary states that aren’t physically presenting themselves right now (and hence in a way aren’t currently “known” by or being expressed by the universe). Furthermore, it’s always clunky and awkward to try to ask how much entropy is in a system that’s not in an equilibrium state (e.g. if the metal had random temperature gradients in it and did not correspond to an easily definable macrostate). In summary, it's always bothered me that entropy must necessarily be defined (quantitatively) with reference to how we choose to describe the macrostate of the thing we’re calculating the entropy of. But finally, I think I’ve resolved this frustration.

The resolution is that it is arbitrary. Any macrostate, no matter how we choose to define it, is a convention. And that convention is arbitrary. Why? Because “things” (that could be in macrostates) don’t literally exist as independent persistent-over-time objects separable from the rest of the universe. Macrostates are concepts only, and not things that have independent physical existence outside that concept, much like our sense of self. The matter and energy of “things” does of course exist, sure. The “stuff” is real. But the way we partition them and section them off from everything else is purely conceptual. Those concepts may be useful, and sufficiently well-defined to allow us to do very useful calculations, but it’s all still just concepts. The universe is not literally reducible to separate-but-interacting parts. It’s all one interacting and blurred together system that has no real physical internal boundaries. From the perspective of, say, quantum field theory, the difference between my chair and my ass is not nearly as obvious as it intuitively seems to be on our length scales. If a single water molecule of sweat evaporates off my arm and diffuses away then at what exact point does the boundary between “my arm” and “my surroundings” move to accommodate that water molecule changing sides? The boundary never moves because no such boundary exists in the objective universe. The idea of “my arm” as different from “the air” is just a (useful) concept. Whereas the most honest description of actual reality is just “there’s a giant wavefunction evolving over time in Hilbert space.”

So in a sense, entropy is more like a (mathematically self-consistent) quantification of how good are our concepts that we use to chop up the universe into discrete imaginary things. One could therefore say that from the perspective of the universe, there is no entropy; there is (only ever) just the current instantaneous microstate of the entire universe that is constantly in motion and hence constantly changing. It is only from our perspective that certain configurations or patterns are more meaningful than others, and so we define them as being “this macrostate” or “that macrostate” (which could encompass multiple different microstates).

I don’t think I would have realized this without all the reflecting I’ve been doing on the ways in which my concept of a self are illusory or the ways in which all experiences are impermanent. Hopefully this was an interesting (and non-woo) stream of consciousness on connections between nonduality and entropy.

2023.03.24 22:58 DrakeWolfzahn Vanguard (alien POV)

Everything was going perfectly.
Commander Qua'zlin had been chosen to be head of the Vanguard Fleet to welcome the humans to the Empire. Of course, he followed every protocol and made sure his fleet had at least several ships, including landing craft. In fact, he added several cruisers based on the rumors about the humans and their physical attributes. Stories here and there about how strong and fast they were, how sly they could be, and how aggressive they had been when it came to negotiations and haggling.
He was more than relieved to see that it was all exaggerated. After all, how could such beings come from such a simple world? A quaint agri-planet with barely any signs of civilization. It was no wonder the Empire hadn't noticed it just outside their borders. Still, it was decided that the Empire would expand its borders once more and welcome the Humans into the fold.
"Landing craft reporting no problems."
One of the communication officers was speaking on behalf of the lone ship on the planet's surface. "Vanguard Parade on route to their capital."
"On main screen," he ordered, relaxing back in his pod-chair, keeping all four eyes on the screen before him. To see from the lead of the Parade was quite entertaining for all.
One of the Krollgians in charge of their radar raised her voice. "Five ships ahead, coming from the planet!" All four arms moved frantically, pressing buttons here and there with lithe fingers to gather information from the displays. "Cruiser-class, outside weapons range. Lead ship is hailing."
The Commander found it quite curious that such a simple planet had five cruisers, even if it was the human home world. The thought fled from his mind as he kept all eyes on the monitors ahead.
"Proceed with communications. Let's see what they have to say, shall we?" Feeling confident that the humans would beg to be part of the Empire after seeing their fleet and parade, he would let his communications officer take care of things.
"They... They're demanding we surrender... or they'll open fire!"
Qua'zlin scoffed as he continued to watch the parade, seeing the images of the main city come into view on monitors. It was a small place. So small that he couldn't see how such a place could be called a city. All eyes never left the view as he stood, demanding to open the line so he could speak to the cruisers ahead. "We will not surrender! You should surrender and fall in line! The Empire is your greatest hope for peace and prosperity!"
A moment later, communications were cut from the human ships. The crew of the flagship all clapped politely at their Commander's display.
Suddenly, the main monitor cut out with the side monitors showing flashes from the city.
"C-Commander!" The communications officer was in sheer panic. "The Parade is under attack! The lead vehicle has been destroyed!"
Before he could fully take in what was happening, the ship's alarms began to blare as two of his own cruisers were hit and completely destroyed. With what little that could be displayed, it was clear that the humans did not wish to join. But to openly attack? Such a thing has never happened before.
The Krollgian stared at her radar in disbelief. "The cruisers... they're using kinetic weapons..." Several blasts followed around the ship, their own fleet being taken out rather quickly. "We've lost several ships..."
The words were lost on Qua'zlin as he froze, an instinct that stayed with his people since their primal days. It was near impossible to process all that was happening. His Parade on the ground were being wiped out with even the landing ship targeted, his Vanguard Fleet being wiped out by a mere five cruisers. In absolute panic and dread, he commanded that the landing ship rejoin the fleet and that they retreat back to imperial space.
However, as he made his commands, the main screen showed the last moment of the Parade, or what was left of it. Through static and flame, he could see what was likely one of the backup cameras from the rear vehicles that was now facing the landing ship. The carnage and destruction was burned into his mind right before a blast that knocked out all forms of communications from the ground.
One last command was made and he slunk back into his pod-chair, clutching it tightly as the flagship managed to turn around jump back to the Empire. Back to safety.
Laying in a slime bath, Qua'zlin stared at the flora of his home-world that hung above him. He had been stuck there for days, unable to respond to any of the medical staff, let alone military personnel. Frankly, it was a blessing. To be able to relax, no need to think about anything, just to merely exist. It was... peaceful. It was so peaceful, in fact, he couldn't hear any of the chaos outside. The alarms, the panic, the yelling.
The doctor who was in charge of his care was in a mild panic himself, speaking to a number of Her Majesty's personal guard. They had wanted to speak to the commander personally, but they had to be told that they couldn't. To take Qua'zlin out of the slime bath would surely bring him back into shock, and likely kill him.
Reluctantly, the guard captain stepped away to speak to an Intelligence officer who was staring out the window, at the Imperial Capital below.
"These are dark days. Our Vanguard Fleet destroyed. The flagship was the only one to return, and half the bridge crew died of shock." The Intelligence officer tapped the glass with a talon, taking a deep breath to relax herself. "And now a human fleet of massive ships, far larger than any we have..."
Her piercing eyes moved skyward to stare at the night sky, making guesswork of how many lights could very well be an invasion fleet.
"Her Majesty must be safe at all costs. As long as she lives, the Empire lives."

2023.03.24 22:47 FiauraTanks Nature of Predators - Nemo Me Impune Lacessit - Chapter 4 (FanFic)

Back First Next
Memory Transcription: Sub-Chief Hilis, Harvester Squadron #72, Tilfish Homeworld
Date [standardized human time]: December 3, 2136
Hilis snarled as he shouted in frustration, “What do you mean the gunships are down? How many humans are there?”
“We aren’t sure! They keep just appearing everywhere! Something else is shooting down the gunsh—” The transmission was interrupted by a massive explosion that sent Hilis covering his ears in the darkened ship. The feedback across the speaker overwhelming any living creature's sense of hearing for a few moments.
“Guard Zweilous, report! Report now!”
“They… they just blew themselves up, the entire side of the road is gone for at least fifty meters, all of warband 7 just… pieces.” Zewilous was clearly stunned, in shock from what Hilis could tell. Even apex predators of the betterment could suddenly fear shock and fear.
“Pull yourself together! Where are the other warbands?”
“Warbands one through eight are gone.”
“What!? That is nearly one thousand of us! You cannot be serious?”
Zewilous howled then went silent as the radio only produced static. “Zweilous answer me! Answer me now!”
He looked out on his view point at the formation of bombers in front of him. Another orbital bomber closed on their position, making a run and launching four bombardment bombs.

That will end this righ— This thoughts were interrupted to sheer horror as the bombs all exploded barely out of their launch ports.

The bombers were only annihilated instantly by their own munitions when interceptor rounds from the planet slammed into them and set them off. The wingmate of the bomber hit by a pair of orbital railgun shots that punched its shields then its core, sending the entire formation of five support bombers to be committed to the void. As the bright green, orange, and yellow faded to reveal stardust left in it's wake. “What what? How are those guns doing that?”
“I don’t know, some sort of new human weapon, it can intercept our bombs as soon as we launch. That is the tenth bomber unit that we sent there only for it to be turned into ash.”
Hilis growled as he looked down at his computer read out, he pushed a button and he could see through Zewilous’s eye implant. He was staring into the woods at a human, a female. The predator moved with supernatural speed, shoving some sort of weapon into the mouth of one of the hunter and it turned his head into a pink mist. She fired the weapon again then threw it at an Arxur pulling a pistol and firing it.
In a blur, several more Arxur fell around her as they closed in. One stabbed her and he thought, Damn, at least she is done for. Only to watch on in absolute dread for the first time in his life. He felt real horror as the human willed itself to stab the attacker. By his own knowledge of their anatomy, her heart should be pierced and she should be dying yet she spurred on to kill two more before falling onto the ground. He heard her words, the kill count and whatever that language he could not understand.
Then he saw the grenade and shouted into the radio as the screen went black, “Get away! Get away now!" His transmission was too late and the remainder of that hunter group were blown apart by a pair of human fragmentation devices.
"By the Betterment what are these humans? Someone down there will report to me! What is going on?” Hilis was beyond furious at how these humans had handled his hunters with such ease. They did not break when charged. They did not falter when pressed. They were not a prey species and their tactics were failing them.
Finally another Arxur called back, “This is Spearmate Juxxis, We… we have killed them.” “How many were there? One hundred? A thousand?”
Juxxis’s voice faltered and sounded terrified, “We… think…. Nine?” Hilis dropped the transmitter and stared out into the void, dumbstruck. “We aren’t sure how many blew themselves up in that blast but, we only have nine long arms and can only account for maybe thirteen individual scents.”
Hilis stared in disbelief at what he was hearing, yet he had just seen a single human slay seven of his kin in a frenzy and she would have kept going if she hadn’t been stabbed in the back. “What is that they keep saying?”
Juxxis hesitated, “We don't know." Sensing the anger on the other end of the channel Juxxis quickly spoke, "We have one, still breathing. What should we do?”
Hilis snarled, relieved they at least had one captive. “Interrogate it! Get every drop of information you can before it dies. Find out where those guns are and what they are! They keep slaughtering us up here every single time we go to drop bombs on them and be done with it."
He considered his tactics and the moment, then decided to cut some losses. "I am not sending anymore bombers until the human fleet is cleared and those ground guns are silenced. You are ordered to gather all our ground forces and head towards the guns, silence them. You are promoted to Sub-Hunter, do not disappoint me.”
Hilis threw the radio aside and looked to his own Sub-Hunter on the ship, “Everyone we have, send them down, we must make sure there are not more of those humans.”
Memory Transcription: Corporal Williams, Black Watch, 4th Company, A Platoon
Date [standardized human time]: December 3, 2136
The Arxur stood over the bleeding human, his shoulder and arm were ripped open. His breathing was labored and the Arxur raised his hand to strike his blackened eye again, “Stop, no need for that; I’ll talk. Not like it matters.” Williams managed through his ragged breathes. He was barely alive and he knew it. He had hoped he would bleed out before they got to his machine gun nest but no such luck.
Williams spat his blood onto his Arxur attacker who snarled and barred his fangs, ready to sink into his flesh, “Cease you idiot!” Juxxis called, the frustration in his voice not lost upon Williams. “Can’t you see that is what he wants?”
Williams looked up, disappointed his ploy hadn’t worked. He wanted to die so he couldn't be made to reveal anything to these reptiles. The Arxur that called his torturer to stop walked up to him. His hands were bound by heavy metal cuffs that reminded him of medieval irons. The Arxur had placed a collar around his neck with two long metal rods to keep control of him.
He was on his knees and found the collar chaffing as the smelly breath of the Arxur washed over his nose. “You could use a breath mint, ya know that? Maybe chew some gum?” Williams gave a glare of deviance, hoping it would spur this Arxur to give just enough pain to put him into shock with the blood loss.
The Axur smiled and his tail swished in irritation, “Funny, human. Tell me, leaf-licker, where is the rest of your unit? How many are you? Where are the Tilfish from that city down the road?”
Williams felt a sense of pride rise up in him. The bodies that littered the forest, the roads, all of it, you could not look more than a few meters before seeing another Arxur corpse. They had accounted for themselves so very well. He wasn’t sure how many they had taken but the number was staggering even to him. “Answer me! How many are you?”
Williams laughed, every Arxur around him recoiled as he laughed heartily, “We were all.”
Juxxis mind reeled at this human, bound, defeated, bleeding to death, laughing at him. Laughing at his question and the answer made even less sense. “There are what, five hundred of you? A thousand?”
Williams laughed more and fell back as a coughing fit took him for a moment. Those holding the metal collar prevented him from falling over. His injuries and the angle of his body making him choke. Juxxis realized his captive was choking on his own blood and lunged forward, hitting him in the sternum to stop him form dying. A chunk of half-congealed blood spat from Williams onto Juxxis's face for his efforts.

Juxxis snarled and pushed his heel against Williams chest, adding to his discomfort without pushing him into much more pain. He was getting fed up and Williams knew it, he just had to keep goading him into ending his suffering. “This is no laughing matter you stupid monkey. Now answer the question before I gut you like the cattle you are and make you watch me eat you alive!”
Williams smirked to himself at the threat; his ploy was working. In his final moments he would betray no one and that was what counted right now. He knew the moment he went down it was a death sentence, no need to give his enemies any ammunition in the process.
Williams took a moment to make peace with his deity and say a pray. Then he looked up at the Axur with defiance in his eyes. “We were all, the ten of us you see here. Yes we stopped all of you cold and fought you to the last bullet. That’s all that were here.” Williams made sure to spit onto Juxxis's face after he finished speaking, going to make sure his venomous words came with a ring of truth to them in addition to never looking away from Juxxis's eyes. He stared into them with a fury that demanded Juxxis give him a chance and he would make sure to take one more Arxur with him.
Juxxis stared down at the human and then looked up at the Axur around him, he could not allow such defiance to the Dominion to stand. He had just been promoted and now everyone was looking to seize that promotion for themselves if he did not act with proper aggression. He clicked his teeth, “Dinner time!” He called out and the Axur pounced.
Williams would only still be breathing for less than a minute. He could already barely see and keep his eyes open and felt his strength fading fast. What shocked the Arxur was he did not scream once even as they gutted him and ate him alive. He instead died smiling at their frustration. This was the part that unnerved the Axur the most about the entire encounter, their one prisoner, died smiling.

Date [standardized human time]: December 3, 2136
Cleland ran with the intensity of a marathon sprinter. She was having to drag the Tilfish after the first thirty meters and now she turned as the sound of battle had faded into the distance. The Tilfish was panting, her thorax inflating rapidly as they doubled over for breath.
Cleland was barely even breathing hard yet she understood the difference in anatomy. Tilfish were insectoids, they couldn’t sweat to cool off and clearly weren’t made for marathon running. Tia’s appearance still made her skin crawl, but she had to suppress the arachnophobia as she was given this charge.
“Listen, I get you are a sprint herbivore-creature and don’t have my endurance and you really creep me out too.” “Then leave me, predator! At least the Arxur will get a kick from my suffering.” Tia yelled at Cleland who quickly fought down her disgust and shoved her hand against the insectoid mouth.
“Keep it down, or you’re going to get us both killed.” Cleland fought the goosebumps along her arm, the way the hair stood on end, the flight instinct that told her to absolutely flee from here. The uncontrolled tunnel vision she bore down onto Tia. Her body and heart beating more rapidly with touching the insectoid and adrenaline rushing through her.
“Alright, listen, I have… I have arachnophobia. Okay? Fear of insects, particularly eight legged ones.” Speaking was enough to make Cleland calm down slightly. Just slightly. “But my orders are to get you back alive and the only way that is happening is if I carry you.”
Cleland reached into her pack and pulled out a heavy winter blanket, completely unsuited for the environment they were in but it would do the job. “Now listen, in order for me to do that, I’m going to have to put this between us or I’m going to seize up okay? I know the fear is illogical and awful but that is what makes it a phobia.” Tia was listening intently, her full attention on Cleland as she spoke. The Tilfish never considered that humans could have irrational fears like they had an irrational fear of predators much less that humans could be afraid of Tilfish themselves. “Is this, fear common among humans?”
“No, it’s well, it is complicated okay? Mental health is weird.” Cleland spoke covering herself in the blanket and turning around to position herself down on one knee ready to rise up and run. “Now, get on top of me but be careful to not actually touch my skin okay? If I freak out, we are both going to die.”
Awkwardly, Tai slowly positioned herself for a piggyback ride and once she was secure she gave a soft tap to Cleland's helmet, “I am ready.”
Cleland had slung her rifle across her waist and finished tying it off against her belt as she starting sprinting with the rifle secured against her hip and side. They were moving now, running at qualification speed for a trooper. Tia was surprisingly light for Cleland even with her pack and gear, the ammo she had emptied, magazines and grenades as well as leaving all her personal explosives meant that Tai was only adding 40 kilograms spread across Clelands strong shoulders, arms and back as the two ran forward.
Several minutes passed before Cleland’s radio squawked twice and she paused, looking around. Two more squawks and she heard the initial radio being turned on nearby. Tia also picked up on it and pointed in a direction. Cleland ran forward to find Hanover and Jellio. “Oh thank fuck, I thought we were the only ones to get away.”
Hanover helped Tia down as he spoke, putting her next to Jellio as the three exhausted ones all laid on the ground panting. Cleland doubled over panting as Tia and Jellio both laid down onto their lower bodies doing the same.
“How…. much… further….” Cleland managed to ragged breathes, the question on everyone’s mind.
“We moved over ten clicks from our outpost, engaged the enemy, and then moved about five back, we should be in radio range shortly, maybe we can radio the situation in and get some mortar support.” Hanover offered, taking out a map of the area and checking his compass. Primitive as map finding may be, in this case, without a GPS system or fleet comm, they had to move by dead recocking and survival training.
“Maybe if we get close enough we can radio for them to bring a vehicle for us?” Jellio suggested with a voice of hopefulness and optimism.
Hanover and Cleland both shook their heads and chuckled despite their fatigue. “Nope.”
Jellio looked disheartened and turned away from Cleland’s nope to Tia for an explanation. Tia shrugged. Hanover reached over and put a firm but gentle grip onto Jellio’s shoulder. “Listen, that caldera has one way in and out after we destroyed all the secondary paths in and trails were blown. The one way in likely has enough explosives, mines, barbed wire, and napalm in it to destroy a city. No, our only way now is to make our way around to the ocean side, which is probably boobytrapped too but at least the Arxur aren’t going to assault from ocean side.”
Jellio’s antenna dropped down and Tia chitted in distress, “That will take two days! The Arxur will find us by then!”
Hanover shook his head, “Not if we camouflage ourselves, cover our tracks and scent, as well as make sure we keep moving away from the sounds of gunfire. So while we are on the way, you are both getting advanced survival and escape/evade training.”
Hanover starting picking up several sticks with leaves still on them to start making footprint booms as well as looking around the forested area for something smelly to apply to their bodies.
Memory Transcription: Captain Neil Campbell, United Nations ‘Black Watch’ Company #4
Date [standardized human time]: December 3, 2136
Neil was standing in front of an assault shuttle currently unloading supplies, with ten Americans helping get stuff off. “I thought you were here to insist we evacuate. What’s all this stuff, leftenant?”
The American second lieutenant noticed the British pronunciation of his rank and turned his head towards Captain Campbell, recognizing him as the commanding officer of the area he had been told about. He gentle set down the crate of orbital interceptor ammo and turned with a sharp salute. “Lieutenant Williams, 3rd armored cavalry. Command knew you wouldn’t accept evac after talking to Mactovish so we volunteered and drew straws for who would fit.” Campbell nodded for Williams to go on, “We cramped everything we could on two shuttles, shuttle two didn’t make it. So that leaves me in charge of the unit, which I report to you now. We have one more anti-orbital interceptor gun getting you up to five. Two dozen stinger-mark 7’s.” Campbell made a note of the personal anti-air light missiles. “Ammo for all your guns, sams, anti-orbital interceptors, and ground to orbital cannon. We also brought a special surprise for the scalies.”
Campbell stepped around the side of the shuttle he had met the Lieutenant on to look inside. He was stunned, inside were two modified Eisenhower IFVs and a Cheetah Main Battle Tank. “Armour? Aren’t they a little vulnerable here?”
Williams let out a laugh and smirked while the vehicle crews continued to unload gear as Sims kept motioning where to take it and who to move what. “Sorry for the laugh, but only if the enemy holds orbital superiority. Right now it’s contested, and we have heavy anti-orbital bombardment and anti-air assets. We noticed on The Cradle that the Arxur distinctly lack anti-armor weapons or heavy armor of their own.”
Campbell could see where this is going, “What are the modifications? Also Americans on a German tank? I get the IFV choice but…”
Williams nodded, “Four months ago, the Cheetah won the combat trial to be the UN tank due to its ruggedness and lack of need for heavy logistics. We agreed to adopt it if we could modify it with our own MGs and use smoothbore instead of rifled. So we switched out the MG2000s for M2A7’s, added an M2A7 for someone who can ride in the back turret balance basket, and called it a day. The Eisenhowers were adopted as frontline IFVs. These are special modified since the assault on Earth.”
Campbell nodded and motioned for him to continue as he moved to help unload crates of ammo and make room to get the vehicles off the transport. “What modifications?”
Williams grinned, “Anti-Plasma layers that cause the heat to distribute across the armor so even railguns that use plasma will have difficulties causing any damage much less penetration. We also added shields and changed out the plasma railguns for good ole fashion solid tungsten. The IFVs have had their Anti-Tank missiles replaced with medium Anti-Air SAMs and a light radar. They also were all equipped with interceptors for AT missiles or slower shells like artillery, the techs say it can even intercept a sabot but I haven’t seen that yet.”
Campbell grinned, “Leave it to Americans, you Yanks do know this is a last stand, you took a one way trip.”
All ten of the Americans stopped and nodded, then resumed their work without another word.
After all the unloading was done, they covered the armour in camouflage nets, adding nature foliage to shield them from being seen, setting up the Cheetah’s front armour and main gun towards the pass while the two Eisenhowers put their autocannons into a crossfire with a distance of two kilometers between them and the tank in between.
Zim ran towards Campbell, stopping when they were out of breath holding up a handwritten series of notes from the communication tent. Campbell started reading.
Recon in Force Squad no longer responding. Estimating they have been fighting for nearly a full hour. BC communications indicate they suffered a lot dead and are in total confusion. BC also indicates they believe the actual force they encountered to be in the hundreds, not a mere ten. There are still two BW's and our volunteers unaccounted for. Rest of the squad presumed KIA. Unsure who should be considered MIA.
Campbell nodded, wadded up the note and swallowed it. Zim grimaced and gave a gagging expression as Campbell forced the note down his throat. “Sorry you had to see that, only way to make sure the communication doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. Thank you Zim, back to your post.”
Zim darted off, no salute, just happy to get away from the space Campbell occupied as Campbell took in stride towards his command vehicle grabbing the radio, “All units, all units, to your fortification positions. Any work not done is to be left undone, as much as it pains us to leave a job unfinished. BC is closing. We have no more time.” As Campbell spoke two missiles fired from the sam sites they had setup, one distant explosion indicated the missile interception but the second one exploded followed by an immediate louder detonation. The gunship had been shot down as the ground vibrated very subtly from the crashing impact.
Two long steel cylinders rotated around with two others. They were nearly four meters tall attached to a large ammuntion bin and sensor suite as well as a generator to provide power. The clang of pulling tungsten rounds into position. There was a charge of electricity in the air before the three barrels began to whirl and unleash.
The orbital interceptors fired with a ring in the air and the taste of metal soaked the world around any humans nearby. Solid slug railguns, small portable by a rover but able to fire a slug straight up, nearly eighty-one kilometers. The two surface to space radar systems found incoming anti-matter bombs as soon as they were launched and there were small flashes in the afternoon sky, like mini-suns as round after round stopped any chance of a simple orbital bombardment ending their outpost turned castle. Several Arxur ships were also severely damaged having their own bombs go off right next to them.
The interceptors fired again again, at nearly two hundred rounds a minute, they could destroy bombs as soon as they were detected, missiles too, from any ship in orbit. The Arxur were paying a heavy price and would never understand why. SAMs kept firing, the anti-air missiles finding fighters and gunships to slam into and send them tumbling into the forest or the ocean or onto the Arxur’s own ground forces.
Further adding confusion their heavy anti-ship missiles flung out and hit Arxur transports coming to the ground, sending them on a one way trip to be smacked by a planet. Campbell knew they had limited ammunition but the Arxur did not know that and with the assault shuttle that got through, the Arxur would know they would have more supplies. No if the Arxur wanted to silence these guns and stop this opposition, they would have to take the caldera by ground forces.
Campbell had the assault shuttle moved and landed in front of the only entrance to the cave the civilians were evacuated into. There an explosion rippled through their camp, not sealing the cave but ensuring the shuttle debris covered the entrance and the hole beyond did not look like a cave without moving a significant amount of twisted metal, instead it looked like an impact crater where the shuttle would have crashed.
Engineers rushed to put out the fire and ensure that the cave wouldn't heat up as well as clean air would continue to flow down inside.
Campbell got to his command rover and prepared himself, watching his gunner get on top and prep the MG to go. All his preparations he could do were done, now the waiting began.

2023.03.24 22:47 IcyFoxe Contrary to the recent post praising the game's karma system, I believe it's actually flawed and only makes the game more frustrating

This is the post I'm refering to: LINK Many of you brought good points about the system, but I would like expand the discussion and point out some of the reasons, why the karma system is actually flawed. Currently I have 90 hours in the game, and I've finished the game as Monk, Survivor and Hunter, and now I'm playing it as Spearmaster.
The core aspects of this game are exploration and survival. Each cycle you need to gain enough food, either through collecting resources or hunting enemies, to be able to rest in the shelter and progress to the next area of the game. All within a time limit, which is dictated by the rain timer (more on that later).
But then at some point of the game, we are introduced to the karma gates. If you don't meet their required karma level, you are forced to stay in your current area and repeat the cycle after cycle, until you reach that required level to be able to progress.
This already breaks the first core aspect of the game, which is exploration.
Your other option is to backtrack, and try to choose a different route, only to possibly meet the same fate at another karma gate.
This can become quickly frustrating, because now your only goal is to gather enough food to rest in the same shelter, that's closest to the gate, and if you die, you further lose your progress and have to repeat the process for even more cycles.
You can abuse starvation, which allows gain two karma levels by skipping one cycle, and not risk dropping your current karma level by dying in the next one, but it makes that next cycle even more frustrating, as your characters is weak, easily spazms and has to gather much more food than before.
My personal experience with Spearmaster at Underhang trying to enter 5P was especially frustrating, as there are not many enemies arount the shelter, so you need to venture a lot further to find some.
I believe that the game would be much less frustrating if there was no karma requirements for the gates in the first place. Managing to reach the gate through all the obstacles and enemies in the previous area is already challenging enough. If the authors of the game wanted to pose some additional challenge to reach some areas, they could've done it through other means, like needing to bring some specific item or having to visit some other area first.
I absolutely love how the path at the top of the Wall was handled. It isn't blocked by any karma gate level requirement, but instead it requires you to have better knowledge of the character's movement and needing you to execute it.
Lastly, just a quick word about the rain system. I like the system and I like how the timer can be shorter or longer on each cycle, but I don't understand why can you change the cycle duration by quitting and restarting the game. That seems like an unintended side effect of the timer not being saved. I would also assume that the cycle duration stays the same if you die, since the cycle number doesn't change, meaning that you have returned with your consciousness to the current cycle and esentially experienced the previous cycle as a dream.

2023.03.24 22:35 GryphonGuitarded Soil health and dog feces

Hi I've been doing my annual garden for 4 years now and last year was the first year I feel like I finally had no issues and everything grew very well.
My garden is on the bottom of a steep hill enclosed by chicken wire, the issue is my 90 pound labradoodle seems to only enjoy doing number 2 right on the hill next to the garden so any rain fall will hit said dookie and go down the hill. I try to stay on top of cleaning my yard but did forget about it for a couple weeks in the past.
My soil has always been really good and the only thing I really do is add 5-8 bags of manure a few weeks before planting, and some mycorrhiza powder, along with some fertilzer pellets on the heavy feeders. Now that we are nearing the beginning of the season I'm wondering if it will be an issue on the plants or am I stressing over nothing? Again the poop isn't in the garden just near by on a hill.

2023.03.24 22:34 HerrPhotographer Do you think X-Pro 3 is a good replacement for M11? Looking for advice on manual shooting experience.

Hello X-Pro 3 users/owners. I am here to ask for your help. I currently own Leica M11 with Summilux 28mm and 50mm f/1.4 lenses. It's a quite expensive setup, which I do not feel comfortable logging around to each corner of the world. I have been thinking of replacing it with a Fujifilm camera, and X-Pro 3 seems to be the closes choice.
Before you recommend X100V, I tried fixed lenses before (with Leica Q2) and I did not enjoy it. I do zone focusing (hyperfocal) with 28mm (or 35mm, close enough but I prefer wider 28mm), and then manual focusing with 50mm. I know one can crop, and resolution these days is plentiful, but I still think there is a difference in out of focus areas (bokeh) and DoF, hence the need for two lenses.
I am not a stickler for image quality, sharpness, microcontrast, all of these are just excuses for me, since I suck at photography. I realise that now (I wish I had known that earlier, wouldn't jump all the way to Leica perhaps). Every picture my family/friends liked/admired, were because of photography fundamentals (story telling, composition, candid moment, clever cliche, etc), never sharpness or even bokeh.
So, I am after a camera that gives me very manual experience and here are things I would like to have:
  1. Optical View Finder - for framing I prefer OVF during good lighting, and use EVF when low-light (I have Visoflex 2, external EVF for Leica that you mount on top).
  2. Manual focusing - for wide angle lenses I use zone focusing, so can shoot from my hip, but for 50mm I use Leica's rangefinder patch, which works well enough at f/2-f/8, but not at f/1.4 (DoF is too shallow), or in low light - there I need EVF.
  3. Manual Aperture ring, SS, and ISO - I like to set them manually, or at least anchor two of them, and perhaps keep one on Auto.
Looking at X-Pro 3, it seems that it has OVF with frame lines, EVF in the small corner if I need to do critical focusing, or full on EVF for low light. It does not have range focusing patch, so my first question is for those who tried both, do you prefer range focusing, or manual focusing with the OVF + EVF patch?
My second question is lenses - I know I can adapt my Leica lenses, via an adapter, to have fully manual lens experience. But is there any native Fujifilm lens, that has manual focusing (not by wire), or at least (if by wire), one that works well with zone focusing (markers on the lens, like the new Hasselblad X2D?).
As you can see, I am less interested in the fact that it is a crop sensor (I do not perceive it as a negative), nor what the low light performance is - I used to own Q2M, as well as M10M (waiting for M11M now).
Lastly, I actually like the idea of the hidden screen. With M11, I always look at the picture, or get bogged down with checking sharpness, which is a bad habit I am trying to break. I even considered purchasing M10D, but those are made in limited numbers, and unless Leica comes up with M11D, I won't be getting it.
So in summary, those who compared/owned both Leica M rangefinder cameras, and Fuji X-Pro 3, how far is the "manual" shooting experience? And what lenses do you use? Native manual lenses (if they exist), or adapted manual Leica/Voigtlander, or Fuji AF lenses?
There is one more alternative, going with crop sensor camera brand Pixii from France, but there aren't many reviews. That would be also cheaper than Leica (but double the price of X-Pro 3), with a rangefinder, without a display. Interesting choice, but it would be too much of a risk, if ever wanted to resell.
I am grateful for your honest opinions, and the time you take to answer my questions.

2023.03.24 22:15 DickBallsButtSekz Applying online for a passport renewal

This is gonna be looooong, but it’s been a crazy experience and I just need somewhere to put this. TLDR at the bottom.
So I applied on the 26th of Jan on
Expedited shipping for 3-5 weeks, that’s what it said. Leaving March 24th so that’s 9 weeks basically. This is a big deal trip to Japan with an incredible amount of planning. It’s a vacation my partner and I badly need. I mean who doesn’t after the last couple years?
My first clue that something was off was that I couldn’t finalize my account creation on weekends. If you create an account on the weekend, there’s nobody there to approve it and you’ll not be able to login. Or something. If only there were computers to do such things…
So March 10 rolls around and I’m getting nervous. 2 weeks out. I call in to the hotline to find out what’s going on. First time I get busy signal, second time I get ‘this number is not valid’ and third time I’m greeted with a message that states something to the effect of ‘we’re slammed on Mondays, don’t call us on Monday’.
So I call on Tuesday. I wait for 20 mins to talk to someone. They tell me that it’s an internet passport and that’s a different department and transfer me. “Your wait time is an hour and a half”. And it actually was. So I talk to someone finally and am told ‘well it’s not within five days so we can’t do anything, then at that point we can see about an in person appointment’. I ask if there’s an easier way to get through to the internet part of passport processing and am told: ‘No, use the main number’. Fucking Mozart…
At this point I’m in panic mode. My amazing partner does all this research and finds this sub. I contact my congresswoman and they get a case manager on it.
4 days go by. I’ve reached out in some way to my case manager every day and heard nothing. I called an expediter, a good one. They’d do it for $1k but told me that I’ll get it and don’t want to cross wires with a new application.
We are now at Monday and I leave Friday. The last week was rough, but this week will be brutal. Case manager calls me back EOD Monday and says he’s spoken to the state department and they’re doing everything they can to get it to me on time. Uh huh.
I f12 the site. See that we’ve moved from exception to fulfillment. Progress, but is it enough?
I check informed delivery on Wednesday. There’s a package from passport people! It’s going from AZ to the east coast priority 1-3 days. I start googling if that’s even possible. There’s a whole site that tells you how long it will take. It’s 2 biz days for me. I have no idea if this day counted as one day or not. Can a package get from AZ to the east coast from Wednesday morning to Thursday afternoon? I spend a lot of time on google with little to show other than a lot of conjecture.
My partner and I go out to dinner on Wednesday. She’s completely broken. She just can’t see straight anymore, the stress and uncertainty is killing her. I’m not far behind.
If I don’t get it Thursday I’m boned.
I have dual citizenship. It’s a two week trip. I spend a lot of mental time and energy figuring out if I can leave on my other passport and have the new one mailed to me. It’s fucking dicey at best. It’s the plan I wanna to with but my more law-abiding partner isn’t comfortable with it. I call the airlines, I email the hotels. I go through so many permutations of what I could do if this doesn’t work, but at the end of the day I can’t do anything because there’s still the tiniest glimmer of hope. I am fucking shattered
I go to bed on Wednesday. The best informed delivery can give me is that it’s in a processing plant in AZ still. I edit the package description to: ‘Stress Maker 6000’
My anxiety wakes me up on Thursday. It’s been doing that for the last two weeks. Last day. I’m trying to go back to sleep before I have either the best or worst news. My mind won’t let me. I check informed delivery. ITS STILL IN FUCKING AZ. I lose it. I just break down and start sobbing. I spent 30 mins on the couch just holding my dog and bawling. My plans, my trip, it’s not all over but there’s so much to do if this goes wrong and I’m exhausted.
I’m so tempted to go anyway on my other passport. I’m so fucking mad. I did everything right and if they had just put a alert in the site and given me a reasonable estimation for processing times I could have made alternative plans. I pay taxes, I don’t ask for much. Wtf!?
I refresh informed delivery religiously, I can’t help myself. At 11am I discover it has been at a processing plant 45 mins away. MY PASSPORT IS 45 MINS AWAY FROM ME!!!!! I break out into maniacal laughter. I can’t control it, I’ve never made sounds like this. What a release. Then the stress sets back in
My case manager calls me soon thereafter and tells me to go get it. I could have called but I just didn’t have it in me. I jump in a car and go to this massive distro center. I’m terrified, but optimistic. The amazingly nice and kind lady tells me that it’s not there. Well then where is it? It’s at my local PO which is five mins from my house
Ok so off we go! I’m starting to feel like a character in a romance movie chasing their love interest at the climax of the movie. I’m in a fairly good place now as I figure it’ll be there or out for delivery.
I get there and wait in line. I tell them my sob story. She goes to the back. It takes five minutes. I age five years. She hands me my passport. She hands me my passport. She hands me my passport. My whole face melts, it’s my birthday soon and she wishes me happy birthday. Must have clocked that when she saw my ID. She tells me it didn’t go out today because it came in too late. I wouldn’t have gotten it if I didn’t pick it up
I take a selfie with my passport. I message everyone. It takes the rest of the day to get back to any semblance of being a normal person. I’m so shell shocked. I’m on this sub and seeing people who submitted later than me got theirs earlier than me with no interjection needed. That truly blows my mind
My takeaways are as follows 1. Don’t use online passport renewal 2. If you’re in a close call situation for expedited, there are professionals who can do it faster. The same place I mentioned above asking for $1000 would have done it for $150 had I given them more time. Cost benefit will be up to the individual, but I definitely would have gone this route. The stress was so brutal. 3. (If you ignore 1) Call your congress person sooner rather than later. Like a month out 4. Get informed delivery setup. I’ve always had it, but it saved my trip 5. Don’t be afraid to go hunt your stuff down. My partner had no idea you could just go to USPS and demand your stuff.
TLDR: Applied online for expedited, it was super super late. I got my passport within less than 24 hours of my departure time. I have 6000 new gray hairs

2023.03.24 22:01 Mattb4rd1 (pushy clerk went too far)

Folks, I love Kohls. I love the employees - generally - I know you work hard. I'll keep shopping there. The stuff is spendy. I don't care. It's a nice store and the quality of the clothing usually justifies the higher prices. Plus, it's a nicer store - like a Publix - so I don't mind paying a bit more. If I want Aldi clothes I'll go to Ross. I don't even mind you guys asking me to open a Kohls account 3 or 4 times every transaction. It's ok. I know you're told to do so. I'm polite. I don't get mad. I'm a nice guy. I'm a gentleman. I'm even dapper. I wear your clothes for Heaven's sake...
But today I got upset because I was treated badly by one of yours and I'd like to know if this is new SOP. Is it? This is the feedback I submitted to (some details redacted):
I'm fine with the overpriced shirts made in south Asia. I'll come back and buy more soon.
What I'm not ok with is being lied to at the register by your clerk whom I believe thought she was being innovative in her attempts to get me to open a Kohls charge account. She asked me to key in a cell phone number to get credit for my Kohls shopping points and suggested it may be my wife's cell phone number. She was probably correct so I dutifully keyed in my wife's cell phone number and she read my wife's name off her screen and said "Oh, I see you have a Kohls charge account, why don't we put today's purchase on that?" - to which I responded, "No, I don't think I do have an account and even if I do, I don't have the card". She explained that it was ok and if I just gave her my driver license she could use that to "authorize the transaction".
I politely declined, completed my transaction, and left the store. The more I thought about it, the more irritated I became. She attempted, I am certain, to open a new Kohls account in my name, and had I handed her my driver license to "authorize the transaction" that's exactly what she would have done.
Management should be ashamed. You push your people too hard to get them to push your credit accounts. It's silly. But today went well beyond silly. Today encroached upon fraudulent territory. If I were a man of ill temper I would be back in the store in person creating a bit of a scene up front with management, but I am not that person. Still, I am sending these electrons with hopes that they find someone that matters. I am doubtful. I don't think you care. In fact, I see these words making it onto one of your corporate Zoom calls as an example of the type of hard core push you want more of your employees engaging in. It's gross. You should stop. It makes me want to consider shopping at TJ Maxx or Marshalls or Ross instead, and who would choose that unless they were forced to do so?
Should you wish to investigate the transaction more thoroughly, the date and time of the transaction: 03/24/23 1:09
