So I got my first huel order few days ago: ordered Huel Black Vanilla, Mexican Chilli H&S and few protein bars (peanut butter)
I was following meal replacement development long time ago when Soylent appeared on Hacker News but never actually tried something like that Recently I realized I am slightly overweight and want to do something about it. I also have some issues with my gut health (which might be IBS, it's hard to say at this point). Issues mostly go away when I try non-strict FODMAP diet or simply eat healthier but I wasn't dilligent enough to actually identify what causes issues yet
First I tried H&S Mexican Chili. My wife tried it as well - she usually is very suspicious of such replacement meals. She hates protein powder for example :)
We actually liked it and it was unexpected. It's decent meal, I can totally imagine eating it when I don't have access to normal healthy food. It's a lot tastier than let say dry ramen things.
So my rating: 5/5 (it exceeded my expectations)
Next I tried protein bars: they are ok, not that tastiest I tried in my life...but palatable. 3/5 I am not hating them, not loving them, they are just ok
Huel Black Vanilla was the last thing. I put into freezer for a night (I read that it will be better). Initial taste is passable, almost neutral but I was barely able to finish it, it has very unpleasant after taste. It took me like 40 minutes to drink the whole thing and last gulps were really hard. So initial impression: 1.5/5 (healthy but horrible taste) I was quite upset about it.
Next day I tried to make it with spoon of instant coffee in a hope it will improve the taste It was slightly better (I didn't want to vomit from it) but still not something I would want to eat. I noticed that when I start drinking it - it's ok and then I become tired of it after 15 minutes, so I wanted to try to put less water into it - like instead of 500 ml to use 400ml
So next day I used less liquid and generously added cinnamon - and it was kind of ok, still not the thing I would say I enjoy but the thing I can drink without thinking about it - 3/5
Absolutely zero issues with my gut so far after few days of eating it. That's good
So summary: - H&S - I am looking forward to try different tastes, will order 2 more bags of H&S in the near future - Black Vanilla - taste is bad... can get used to it...but not sure I want, I might try different taste like Chocolate or even switch to non black, it's a pity that Huel doesn't have taster packs.. I might order different company powders just because of it. Huel - why is it so hard to make taster pack? Can you provide reasonable explanation why it['s economically not viable for you? - bars are ok but I would prefer other bars

I was hoping to get feedback on Grieve’s translation of Swann’s Way. Near the end of page 87 the gardener states to Francoise, “… when your revolution’s declared the only ones what gets called up is them as wants to.”
Not sure if this was an interesting dialogue choice by Proust or a weird translation by Grieve but it gave me a stroke reading it. Will this turn me away from Grieve’s translation or am I misunderstanding the point of the diction?

Has anyone been having trouble getting their medication? My pharmacy is frustrating and won’t ever renew more than a few days before you run out. So that time comes and they say they are out and hoping to get them this afternoon. I’m really nervous, today is my last pill. And I already split up doses to even get this one. It’s really been working for me and I don’t want to mess with it or go through withdrawals :/

Whenever HP and its writing comes up, the strengths are usually said to be the description of the images and the character driven story, while the overall writing is okay.
One of the most repeated arguments in favor of the writing a lot of times is how the earlier books were written for children, and how they evolved over time to age with their readers.
Now, I have problem with that; Or more like, am confused. I LOVED the first movies and the world. Before that I got the first book as a child. And I absolutely HATED the book. I was no big reader, but I read. And boy, I couldnt get through any amount of double digit number of pages before putting the book to the side. As a child, I found it so utterly terrible written; I only went to the movie because of friends. After the awesome first movie I tried to get back into it - Goddamn, I just couldnt stand it.
As it happens, HP content likes to hit the front page. Im still nostalgic for the movies, so I often look into the threads. As the people argue, they often cite quotes of the books. And nearly without exception, even with later books, I groan and feel put off by the writing. E.g. conversations, they never flow or feel natural for me. It all reads so bad. I know this ain't GRRM levels, but I just can't read this. And I got through Eragon back then!
So, since the latest frontpage post, this just got me wondering... Does JR have some specific style that I absolutely dont vibe with? Is the writing in general just bad and people praise it for nostalgic reasons? I cant think of any other book (granted I read only a few a year) that gets such reactions out of me. Maybe something like 50 shades of grey, but thats only from hearsay - The movies I was forced through were enough.
Im just so confused because even as a kid I hated it so much, and I never warmed up to the books. Instead, it only gets worse whenever I see some book excerpt.

My HTB (34m) and I(28f) plan to get married at the courthouse with our parents there and then have a protestant church wedding a week later.
In Germany thats nearly for free if youre part of the church.
We do not plan on celebrating afterwards because we want to use our money on a small honeymoon since we dont have a lot of money.
We plan to invite only our closest family and friends to church.
Since there would be no extra costs for more guests it doesent really matter how many people we invite, but it will not be more than 30.
Now, I do not have a good relationship to my grandma, never had. We both know but she acts like I should just be ok with how she treated me all my life. Family first and stuff like that.
My mom is a little toxic and much like my grandma. There is some generational trauma that Im not willing to continue with these two women.
My mom insists I invite my grandma since shes family and she would be "sad" if she heard from others that I got married without her. My mom also knows why I dont want her there.
She made snarky comments on my appearance and how I live my life for all my life.
She made me cry several times, saying things like I dress like a guy.
I dont want anyone there who will not be positive that day. Also she knows nothing about my life or my fiance so why would I invite her.
What are your thoughts and how would you possibly defend that?

CW: this is long and contains mentions of SA. I'm really sorry if this isn't the place to post this. I just really need help right now or just one person to listen because I feel like it's all in my head . . I'm in a fragile state rn because I just woke up from nightmares about my ex so I'm going to do my best to type this. My ex called me out of the blue and my ex calling me makes me so scared. It makes me throw up, sweat, run to the toilet, and cry at times. I always thought that meant I was excited to talk to him but my therapist made me realize that maybe that's not healthy. Well, he called and tried to tell me that I only ever wanted to hurt him in the relationship and then started talking about events that happened except twisted my words when I had proof that that's not what happened. Then he changed it up to "well I apologized and still" or said it a little differently.
I never want to invalidate or hurt my ex because their experiences are real to them and that matters. But they're also going through something serious that has led to me dealing with their unstable emotional state for years. I don't even like saying that because I don't want to invalidate them. But I had proof these things that they're talking about didn't happen or that their words don't match up to what they said and they're convinced it was me. They said they were scared of me and that I wanted to hurt them and such. That scared me because I ALWAYS asked for communication and for honesty and tried to check in with our relationship to see if things were okay. I always tried my best to listen and be supportive. But often times I would be supportive and my words were twisted. Or id communicate and they would ignore me and claim they were trying to fix it. I tried to see their side for years but I wish I listened to my friends when they told me to leave.
I've been going to therapy and while my therapist tries to hide it, I can tell she was relieved when I left him. She had helped me realize that my physical responses to him being near or calling were not normal. She told me that it sounded like I might be being neglected and at least being subject to things that were potentially harmful. It was at that time that I found out I might have been sexually abused by him over and over again which has left me broken and angry with myself. I didn't know that if you asked someone to stop because it hurts that they have to stop or else it's sexual assault. I thought that it meant he was too caught up in his pleasure and didn't mean it. I thought maybe he didn't hear me when I withdrew my consent but he did it anyways. Or that I lead him on when I told him I didn't want sex but was okay with anything else and he did it anyways...I didn't know. I thought it was that he didn't mean it. I've had nightmares ever since. I then made the mistake of wanting to ask him if he really didn't hear me that night but couldn't even get the words out and had a panic attack and had to call a crisis hotline. My ex told me I'm obligated to tell him what I wanted to say if it involves him. I said no and that I don't feel safe to right now. I can't even get through this post without crying.
He never paid for me and it was always me paying for him, he asked for money and then admitted to him not needing it and buying random things with it, he embarrassed me because he'd do things like lift my leg up over his head in public while I was in a skirt or would follow me around public places with a very obvious boner and people would stare and I just wanted to hide because he knew that he had it and said he always does with me, he told me I wasn't a "real adult". He told me I didn't understand the world. I called him after my pet died and he said he was at a friend's right now and wanted to play games with them and I was just left alone. He also hung out with someone who sexually assaulted me and he told me he forgot and that the person apologized (they didn't) and that I should let it go instead of breathing down his back about why that hurt my feelings.
I'll admit that I did constantly reach out to try to communicate or point out boundaries or constructive criticism (I never meant to hurt them, I just wanted to say I didn't like they they didn't communicate or that they didn't get help and took things out in me, etc) and he told me that I was being hurtful and that I only cared about bringing him down and that he has less nightmares being around me. Now I'm feeling so confused and hurt. Am I the bad guy? Was I too much? I don't wanna bring him down or invalidate him but I'm so torn up right now.

TLDR: - told receptionist to make sure she booked me for enough time with my stylist for back-to-back foils for bleach because i have long hair and last time it took hours - i asked stylist to make my hair golden and NOT ASHY - she does my hair. she says there wasn’t enough time for bleach and to “give her a heads up next time” so she just put a color in my hair. charged $245 for color and asked for a tip - my hair looks further away from the inspiration picture than when i came in. my hair was already golden when i came in. she made it look ashy and grey. it’s the exact opposite of what i wanted. she books me for 2 weeks later for the actual bleaching session i originally wanted…

• she should’ve told me “sorry there’s not enough time today, can you come in 2 weeks?” but instead she put a color that i didn’t even want and now i have to try and wash it out in the shower. and i lost nearly $300. for hair i think is ugly

my hair was originally dark brown and i’m in the process of going blonde. my first session with this stylist took about 6 hours of back-to-back foils of bleach because my hair is so long.
it’s been a month so i scheduled the next session. i tried to communicate with the receptionist that i have long hair and last time we did back-to-back foils of bleach. i even asked if she was sure there was enough time because i was there for hours last time. “yes, there’s definitely enough time”
i show up the the appointment at 11:00am thinking i will be there for 6 hours getting another bleach session to go even lighter. i show the inspo picture. i say “i want it to be golden- i DON’T want it to be ashy”. 2 stylists look at the inspo pic- one of them even says to her “wow it looks like she has NO toner in there at all”
they put me in the chair. they talk to each other in the background about lightening my hair for 15 minutes and doing a “pre-toner” and keeping the warmth. i think everything’s fine. after 1 hour and a half they start blow-drying my hair. no foils were done. no bleach was done. i was like “that’s weird, how am i done already”
i look in the mirror. i see my hair is GREY. ashy. it already looked golden before i came into the appointment- and they did the OPPOSITE of what i wanted. it looks even darker then when i came in. my hair looked more like the inspo picture BEFORE.
i literally want to cry. they ask to take pictures for their instagram and i let them. the stylist says “next time you have to give me a heads up before you come in because to get you lighter it would take HOURS”. i’m so confused because i already told receptionist it would take hours of back to back foils and i asked the receptionist to make sure there was enough time. the stylist said “we just did a color today so it shouldn’t be too much”.
i want to cry in the salon but i’m thinking “okay it’s just color- it shouldn’t be too much maybe $80”. then they said $245. she asks for the tip so i tip her 15% on the ipad. i book an appointment with her for two weeks for the ACTUAL bleaching session i wanted. i go cry in my car because now i have ugly grey hair for 2 weeks and wasted nearly $300 for hair that i hate and think is ugly.
i feel scammed almost because she could’ve just told me “sorry we don’t have time today, can you come in 2 weeks?” but instead she put color in my hair that i DIDNT want and made my hair look the OPPOSITE of what i wanted
