Dear Americans,
it is that time again. Something so terrible, tragic, and unthinkable has happened, that left you and the rest of the world in shock, as we stare at those six faces at the news. Those six faces, that will never return home again.
While the community mourns, arguments start on social media and you are divided between those, that demand more gun control, and those, that defend your right to bear arms. Meanwhile, the world watches.
I would like to show you, what this looks like from an outsider's perspective. So please take your time and bear with me.

It is the year 2023 on Earth II, an almost exact replica of earth as you know it. I live in the United Federation Acirema, or UFA for short. UFA has a population of roughly 300 million citizens and is centered on the core values of freedom and individualism. They are the greatest country on Earth II and criticise those, that limit people's rights, by forbidding them to own things that allow everyone to defend themselves in case of attacks, crime, or a revolt of the government. Among these is the right to own and carry guns. And bombs.
The other countries of Earth II heavily criticise UFA because of this, but the United Federation is adamant about not restricting this right, which is anchored in their constitution. Supporters of this right, like myself, argue, that without the right to build, buy, carry, and use explosive devices in a situation where they would protect themselves, their core freedom would be lost. After all, bombs themselves don't kill people. People kill people. If they ban bombs or control the sale and storage of bombs, then people would still kill people, just with knives. And we would all agree, that banning knives makes no sense.
Most people that own bombs, like me, use them for personal protection. We buy alarm systems with integrated explosive devices, used to protect ourselves against burglars. Others also carry grenades to defend themselves if they are attacked. The second largest group of stakeholders on the pro side are fishers, who use small detonators to fish, both as a way of feeding their families and as a sport. Speaking of sports, various clubs also host competitions in speed-building (the fastest person to assemble a working explosive device) and accuracy (both throwing and also judging the impact).
There are also bomb suits fun runs, which are always the highligh of my year, as they promote bomb safety!

There are, however, some tragic cases of a child finding their mother's self-defense grenade in her purse and accidentally detonating it, thinking it was a toy. However, these cases barely happen and after all, it is purely the parent's fault. I mean everyone with enough common sense would be more careful. So I don't have to worry about it, they messed up and it will never happen to me. Sometimes, there are also cases of someone blowing up a mall or a school. I have to admit, that scares me a little more. However, if you actually look into why this happened, the problem was not that the criminal had a bomb. After all, there are plenty of peaceful, law-abiding enthusiasts of explosive devices, like myself. In every case, the bomber had a mental illness or no support system, so if we just try offer better support, this would not happen anymore. After all, bombs don't kill people. People kill people.
To offer better protection, The school in my town now has metal scanners, heavy steel doors, and ex-bomb squad members on staff. Teachers are also taught how to disarm a bomb if they find one and the school has a cell signal jammer, so no bombs can be detonated remotely. This makes me feel a lot safer sending my kids there. However, to be honest, the best way would be to just arm teachers with grenades as well, so my daughter is kept safe.
Some people say, that we should just ban bombs. But I have a bomb and nothing ever happened to me. I have several even, some for self-defense, then the one linked to my alarm system, and some historic models. So clearly, safe bomb ownership is possible. The problem is, that people aren't taught how to handle bombs properly. And illegal bombs of course. All of mine were legally bought at the supermarket around the corner. Also, if people were ever to rise up or the government would abolish democracy, we can defend ourselves and make sure that our democracy and freedom cannot be destroyed. So clearly, they serve an important purpose. I know, that there are about forty thousand people a year, that die because of bombs. But that number is just hyped up, because over 60% are suicides anyway, and they would happen no matter what. And the other deaths would happen too, we would just see an increase in knife fights. So bombs are not the issue.
In addition, banning bombs at this point is pretty impossible. It's just a way for the manufacturers of safes and other storing methods to make more money off of us. And, as I said, the main problems are the illegal bombs anyway, controlling us legal explosive enthusiasts would not solve anything anyway. By this point, bombs are so common, that the best way is just to teach people how to use them, maybe be stricter with illegal bomb ownership, but that's it. I'm proud to be an Acirema and proud of my rights and freedoms, which no other country on Earth II can even come close to.

However, in 2019 sixteen people in the US died of explosions and eighty-six were injured (mainly due to accidents like fireworks or gas leaks). There were 251 bombing incidents in the US in that year. Also in 2019, there were 39,707 gun deaths (of that 14,414 homicides) in the US. almost four thousand of them were children. Compared to the EU, which has about 6,400 gun deaths per year, of that 1000 homicides. And that with a far bigger population (USA: 332 Million, EU: 447 Million).
You might call me unreasonable to make this comparison. After all, you can't just get a bomb and walk around with it. If you think that, just reread the last sentence and think about it for a minute.
The thing is, I know that the world I just describes is completely unreasonable. Like, imagine going to university and someone sitting next to you with a suicide vest. See, that is how we feel when we think about students legally bringing guns into the classroom. That is why we look at you in disbelief when you sell guns legally in a target with little to no background check and so on.
