Explain things like I’m age 15, because I am 15-ish. Askers: younger people wanting big questions answered by been there, thought that, done that, experienced, educated, reality-based older by a decade people. M + F → 15-ish you (with questions). Answerers: explain things to your 15-year-old self.

2020.07.16 13:27 Olionheart How do you imagine a multiplayer raid (and dungeon) content in SIFAS?

This started as a discussion with u/gironimo_No10 but I am now very interested in the idea.
Similar to the Kizuna board, I think we can have a board for 3 basic roles - Tank, Healer, DPS
Voltage -> Damage to targets. There can be adds during a boss fight, and you will have to target them by tapping on their icons, which should be augmented to the current UI.
Boss -> Your raid voltage completion goal serves as the main boss HP. The boss dies when you hit S, so the rewards for C/B/A should be significantly lower than S rewards. If you fulfill the bar before the song is over, then your excess voltage will be the "overkill" which can give you slightly more rewards, or is used to rank guild clear rankings. (Yes, there should be a guild system in game, of course!). Needless to say, enemy units should deal damage to its target (hopefully the tank) and leave other DPS unscathed, except for some skills that allow it to cleave or deal raid damage.
HP -> simple and clear. If your HP hits 0, you die (unless you have Eli1 proc uwu). Once you die, you're no longer the part of the fight, but you can still claim the rewards when your group takes the boss down. If everyone in the group dies, your group wipes.
Tank - you generate more threat, but suffer a voltage penalty to prevent some megawhale from tanking and top dps-ing at the same time ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Your SP skill serves as a defensive cooldown - it deals some damage and heals you (or gives you a shield) as well as reduce your damage taken by a significant % for the next 3.6 seconds (similar to current SP skill appeal increase window). Harder bosses can force you to use your mitigation more often than the base refill period, forcing you to run SP filler in your team.
Healer - your heal and shield can be applied to other players, unlike tank and DPS. Your SP skill significantly heals one target, or all friendly targets, depending on your talent spec. Perhaps we can add some cleanse too.
DPS - straightforward role that deals damage to targets. It should work exactly as what we are doing in current lives mode.
Boss mechanics:
Dodge - something like "anyone in red subunit during this note will take 100k damage"
Soak - something like "deals 200K damage split between everyone in green subunit. If no one is in green subunit, all raid members will take 200K damage"
Enrage - if you fail to hit S before the song ends, you can play for a few more notes (perhaps by repeating the last part of the song) but each note will deal significantly more damage such that the raid should wipe before the repeat finishes, unless the raid kills the boss really quickly. If the raid fails to kill the boss after the repeat, then maybe it's a forced wipe.
I don't have a clear idea for more complicated mechanics yet, but I think these ideas can provide a good start for fun multiplayer cooperative "live shows" - a content to play with friends, and to push your teambuilding / skillplay limits, even for whales. (Maybe we can have several difficulties, similar to normal, heroic, and mythic raids so that more casual players can still enjoy this mode, and LFR for people who can't find a guild group run)
What do you all think? Do you think this sounds like fun, or do you have anything to add / suggest? I'd really love to see this mode (or anything that I will have to overcome with my friends) added to SIFAS.

2019.11.22 04:22 AlbatrossofTime Image Analysis of the Half-Life: Alyx trailer.

Good evening everyone. Reposting from the HL: Alyx annoucement thread over at ValveTime.net. Thought there might be an interested audience over here as well, hope you all find these caps as exciting as I do.
New combine soldier: http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/combine1-jpg.26196/
Planning session, teacup, Resistance member w/ gasmask: http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/planning1-jpg.26197/
Squad of four Combine soldiers in City 17 engaging target offscreen to the left. Note the backpack apparatus. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/combinesquad1-jpg.26198/
Our old friend the railway system, shuffling everyone off to their own personal resonance cascades and saline solution re-education lectures. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/train1-jpg.26199/
Nice environmental shot showcasing the headcrabs. Of particular note here is their newfound ability to crawl on vertical surfaces (hard to make out on this shot, but he's on the wall in the lower left corner. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/crablighting1-jpg.26200/
Prominent scientist and future worm-food, Eli Vance. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/eli1-jpg.26201/
Side view of the new firearm from the cabinet scene. Familiar shade of orange. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/firearm1-jpg.26202/
Rear view of the firearm as it is being loaded. Note the ammo counter at the rear of the receiver. Also, the first image of the right hand glove apparatus. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/firearm2-jpg.26203/
Contrary to what I had previously believed, it's not that each cartridge holds 2 shots, she grabbed two cartridges and loaded them at the same time. Also, inexplicably, Scout bobblehead on the cabinet. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/firearm3-jpg.26204/
Clear view of the left hand glove apparatus. Prominent health counter at the base of the wrist, flashlight to the left. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/leftglove1-jpg.26205/
stares at subway poster on the right hand side How bout you go fuck yourself? Addendum: USP http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/water1-jpg.26206/
Clear view of the new critter at the beginning of the trailer. Definitely not a regular headcrab, easier to tell when watching the video. Looks like a blanket with a stinger. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/blanketcrab1-jpg.26208/
Another shot of the blanketcrab, prominent view of the stinger. Also of note is a large seemingly organic mass that has globbed up against the side of the stairwell. And bucket. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/blanketcrab2-jpg.26209/
A centerpiece of the trailer, a new form of the familiar Strider Synth. Of particular note are the hydraulics attached to the legs to support the triangular platform on top of the Strider, manned by one Combine soldier and equipped with one pulse turret at the fore corner. Also, this Strider does not appear to have the typical undercarriage pulse cannon. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/towerwalker1-jpg.26210/
First shot of the Citadel under construction, which I suppose finally puts to rest the old idea that the Citadels were teleported in. A multitude of what are seemingly power cables leading towards the construction site. Also, a platform Strider standing up in the city towards the bottom of the image. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/citadel1-jpg.26211/
First shot of (what I am at this time calling) the Combine ship. Rear view. A closer look at the previously mentioned power lines. Green lightning is always a good omen in the Half-Life continuity. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/green1-jpg.26212/
Here we can see a hand-held tool that will scan electrical systems, present how power is flowing, and can presumably be used to troubleshoot and debug issues with said systems. At this point I am assuming that blue means good, and yellow means broke. As the clip progresses, the tool toggles the orange switch to complete the circuit to the power box on the left hand side. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/meter1-jpg.26213/
Nothing too subtle for the Combine. It's a big ole drill. Period spacebar. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/drill1-jpg.26214/
Our new friend from the planning session clip earlier. Not entirely sure if what he is wearing is a gasmask or some sort of gasmask-hoodie-hybrid. That's fashion, baby. Also, apparently voiced by a member of Flight of the Concords. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/buddy1-jpg.26215/
Clearer view of both of the hand UI's at the same time, along with what appear to be dual "receptacles" from which the hands were being withdrawn during the clip. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/receptacles1-jpg.26216/
A shot of the right hand glove apparatus as it is activated. Functionality appears reminiscent of the zero-point energy field manipulator, with the additional feature of highlighting whatever it is currently interacting with in the world. Re: picking shit up. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/rhs1-jpg.26217/
A LOT to take in on this frame. - Some sort of charging station, with a receptacle full of some sort of alien grub. Not certain as to the exact taxonomy at this time, but the mouth/mandibles look antlion to me. - EDIT: NOPE, HEADCRAB ZOMBIE. [STRIKE]CREEPY SYNTH IN THE WINDOW. It MIGHT be a Hunter, but it doesn't move like one. It might not even be a synth, it's hard to make out. [/STRIKE] - Low health warning on the LH glove UI. - Ammo counter on the LH glove UI, that isn't 0 for once. - Hand interface on the console, more on that in the next image. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/grub1-jpg.26221/
An image of the previous hand interface in action. What appear to be a swarm of Combine Wacom pens start emergency hand acupuncture, I'm guessing that this is a health station given Alyx's state. The receptacle begins to either extract from the grub (or convert the grub into) green TMNT ooze. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/grub2-jpg.26222/
The previously mentioned TMNT ooze, with the grub, uh, fully and successfully compressed. Also, headcrab zombies. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/grub3-jpg.26223/
An illuminated view of the previously mentioned shadow in the subway window. Appears to be a headcrab zombie, but the headcrab... it's ****ing huge. That headcrab is the size of a great dane with the beef of a small bear. I now know that I will one day have to fight off a bearcrab with a crowbar in VR. I am fully, unconditionally erect. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/headcrabzombie-jpg.26224/
Headcrab zombie busting through a wall. Of interest for us here is a better view of the organic masses down the tunnel. Rendering-wise, it's nice to see further advancement in their dynamic physics sims and what appear to be volumetric smoke simulations rendering w/ respect to the physical interaction (re: zombie busts wall, wall emits smoke w/ particular velocity and restitution). http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/smoke1-jpg.26225/
Beginning of the cabinet scene. Interesting alien flora along the right hand side of the hallway the Combine are walking through. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/flora1-jpg.26226/
This could be a regular soldier at the end of the cabinet scene, but I'm not sure. The weapon that he is wielding looks slightly different from the others. Again, not sure, I could use some help with this one. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/weirdgun1-jpg.26227/
A lovely shot of the underside of a typical Strider scrote. I think they might have updated the connective scrote/plasma-cannon tissue, but I'm not sure. Also neat particle effects in this shot, particulate suspension sparklies. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/donger1-jpg.26228/
And that right there, ladies and gentlemen, is Xen flora. Light Stalks in the new age. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/xen1-jpg.26229/
Better shot of the angry stalk in the background. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/xen2-jpg.26230/
I have absolutely no ****ing idea. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/wtf1-jpg.26231/
Not a lot of information in this shot, but I really enjoy the composition so I'm going to post it. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/composition1-jpg.26233/
Your guess is as good as mine, here. Another interface system for the previous circuit tool? Those network nodes look suspiciously like stars, but I'm not going to speculate further. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/solar1-jpg.26234/
Reach out and touch somebody. It looks like we have a pick-pocketing mini-game on our hand. Alyx here is using the RH glove apparatus to get something off that Combine soldiers hip. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/touch1-jpg.26235/
Object in transit after the yank. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/touch2-jpg.26236/
Close up view of the object in hand. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/touch3-jpg.26237/
Yeah, that's probably a grenade. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/touch4-jpg.26238/
More headcrab zombies, with the addition of a new kind of spikeyboi on the right hand side. Also, I'm not sure what Alyx is holding in this frame. It looks like a gun, but has some sort of attachment on the right hand side. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/spikey1-jpg.26239/
This poor fungus man seems to have been thoroughly barnacled. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/barnacle1-jpg.26240/
Two of the more intriguing members of the new HL crew, a new lightning headcrab zombie with requisite gaping chest wound in center frame, and a new Combine soldier type dead to the bottom left sporting a bright yellow rubber jumper. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/lightning1-jpg.26241/
Updated antlion textures and models. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/antlion1-jpg.26242/
Flippity flappity, he's coming for your bippidy bappidy. Note the limb removal. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/antlion2-jpg.26243/
First full frame shot of the Combine ship. http://www.valvetime.net/attachments/ship1-jpg.26244/
