I saw people share their stories and stats for internships applications so I wanted to share mine.
I’m a junior at NESCAC school, international. GPA >3.7, had 4 jobs on campus including CS TA, and summer research in AI. Also had a ~~job over summer off campus related to CS.
My internship is a fintech company and it’s remote, pays over $50 an hour.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: I got my internship through a friend who graduated 2 years ago. He referred me to the company, I had a call interview, and then was just waiting for the teams to look at my resume. My friend vouched for my resume in his team and they interviewed me.
I am not sure how many applications I has sent prior to that but it was a struggle to even get an interview.
Overall, I sympathize with everyone who’s struggling to get an internship and I wish you the best of luck. My advice would be to make friends with successful people and also help your friends become successful! Always talk to people who graduated from your school who now work in the industry, especially if you’re coming from a small school.

I've not seen it questionned before, and maybe there's a good reason, but are there reasons to doubt Enia?
Spoilers Ahead!
Towards the end of the game, when the fingers are 'Communing with the Greater Will' and we ask Enia about burning the Erdtree, she tells us what we'd expect from an agent of the fingers, then goes on to say 'Perhaps a sin does not need to be Cardinal forever' or something to that effect.
Enia seems to have her own thoughts and desires, independent of the Greater Will, and even contradictory. We know that the Greater Will can't just speak through the fingers as it takes 'thousands, if not tens of thousands of moons' for them to actually communicate, so there's only really so much the fingers are able or authorized to actually 'say'.
Let's look at this excerpt: "Fine work, brave Tarnished. The Greater Will is pleased. You have earned the right to become Elden Lord. Now, seek the Erdtree, and an audience with Queen Marika. To become Elden Lord, and restore the Golden Order."
Now how in the Lands Between can the Fingers and Enia tell us that the Greater Will is pleased if it will take many moons for them to actually communicate. Are the Fingers simply 'programmed' with template messages for the Tarnished? Or is Enia lying when she tells us what the fingers are doing and how long it will take?
Can we be sure that Enia is actually relaying the true message of the Fingers? Do we have enough cause to trust her?
Something doesn't add up for me with the fingers, and I'm starting to wonder just role Enia really plays. This is pure tangential speculation, but I used to think the Fingers were meant to represent the 'Hand of God's, God being the puppet master the Greater Will, and the fingers pulling the strings of various entities throughout the lands such as Finger Readers and The Tarnished, to further the Greater Will's designs. But now I wonder if instead, the Fingers themselves are puppets? When they are allegedly 'Communing with the Greater Will's they are upright and motionless - much like an inactive puppet. They appear to be made of wood (the ones that aren't Ranni's), as are traditional puppets and marionettes.
I have been wondering if Ranni's 2 Fingers and the 3-Fingers are the only real Fingers in the game, and if the rest are just puppets. It's possible that any entity in the Lands Between that wants to influence The Tarnished into achieving their ending would have enough notice to pull some strings. My head cannon suspect though, is Gideon Ofnir. He is already a creepy dude, he's familiar with Selivus and puppetry, and his demeanor seems to improve with the Fingers' - as we acquire runes. He is the one that tells us to find a great rune and receive the wisdom of the 2 Fingers, and like Enia he rewards us from bringing him things. If we bring Enia remembrances she rewards us with Legendary gear, as does Gideon if we bring him knowledge. Finally, Gideon betrays us towards the very end of the game, hoping to supersede us as Elden Lord - so in my crazy head cannon, it would make sense for the Fingers a(t Roundtable hold at least) to be Gideon's puppets.
Had cannon aside, I think it's worth casting some Skepticism on Enia's words, and where they're really coming from.

Just curious if anyone in the US has recently ordered directly from them and how long you waited. I saw a post from last year saying people were waiting many weeks and wondering if that's still the case. It's not a custom one (which it seems they don't do anymore anyway?) and according to the item page it's in stock, so hopefully it won't be too long.
Also there's lots of advice/info about the A5 size but I don't see many people using the larger A4. If anyone has the large version and has tips for inserts, I'd love to hear them.

- I think gated, but here is Scott Alexander on my AI argument. I am a big fan of Scott’s, but this is a gross misrepresentation of what I wrote. Scott ignores my critical point that this is all happening anyway (he should talk more to people in DC), does not engage with the notion of historical reasoning (there is only a narrow conception of rationalism in his post), does not consider Hayek and the category of Knightian uncertainty, and does not consider the all-critical China argument, among other points. Or how about the notion that we can’t fix for more safety until we see more of the progress? Or the negative bias in long-worded, rationalist treatments of this topic? Plus his restatement of my argument is simply not what I wrote. Sorry Scott! There are plenty of arguments you just can’t put into the categories outlined in LessWrong posts.

Orthodontist want to pull out 4 premolar teeth, 2 from each jaw. Then also my bottom wisdom teeth. I've only been on one consultation with the surgeon were he was talking generally about the surgery (BSSO). I don't know how many millimeters, he mentioned 7mm, but he might have just been giving an example. I'm just in the beginning process so I don't think a detailed plan exist yet, I just know that it will be a BSSO.
This is through healthcare so they mainly care about function, which is a shame. I would like to not have to have a beard if I choose after the surgery but I'm not sure they will advance me enough to were I can look normal. Now it feels like I kinda don't have a chin.
I have a 10mm overjet/overbite (?), I can bite myself behind my upper teeth. I have TMJ, bad snoring, mouth breath sometimes.
I can't get different opinions or anything like that, this is what my country provides for the region I'm living in. At least it will only cost $150 for braces, surgery and everything. So I'm really happy about that! :)

I've only been on one consultation with the surgeon were he was talking generally about the surgery (BSSO). I don't know how many millimeters, he mentioned 7mm, but he might have just been giving an example. I'm just in the beginning process so I don't think a detailed plan exist yet, I just know that it will be a BSSO.

My (32F) husband (45M) and I have been married for three years. We have a beautiful life together, I love being with him and talking to him, we have strong physical attraction to one another, etc. But my stress level is rising as a result of the financial situation. Although our costs were low when we initially started dating, it changed once we jointly purchased a home. Despite having a decently high income, we live over our means and have a $14K debt on our credit cards. Thankfully, most of it is currently on interest-free credit cards. But for a card with a $10,000 balance, our incentive period expires in just 4 months. I am stressed about it, but my husband's attitude is that we can just transfer it again to a new card (even though we would pay a fee of 10%).
I badly want to get a handle on this and my goal is to have 0 debt and for our bills to all be on autopay. We can do this in just 3 years but would need to avoid any large purchases and maintain our current income. My husband however, wants what he wants when he wants it. He is impulsive, and he just doesn't care whether we are in debt or not. I have talked to him many times about how extremely stressed out I have been about the finances.. This has been going on for years. I am part of the problem. I have ADD and am not a good budgeter myself and not very mindful of my own spending.
We've gone on several expensive vacations in the past and always wind up more in debt when we come back. And we don't travel well together. I travel for work and I need to be very early and structured when I travel or else I get really stressed. He is chaotic, and sometimes unpredictable when we travel. Our last flight we had together he got really drunk and acted obnoxious at the airport. He made a scene yelling and arguing with me when I was just trying to get us to our gate on time. It was obvious and people were noticing. I got so angry and fed up that I told him I would never fly with him again. He has never truly taken accountability for his behavior.
Despite everything, my husband constantly asks when we can go on vacation next. I always say NO because we cannot afford to and I won't fly with him. The other day he decided to book a whole ass Mediterranean cruise and to tell me afterwards. This is definitely not the first time he has done something like this. He feels like I am not open to experiences, that I need to be pushed to do things. This is why he does it.
This trip he booked costs nearly $4500, including the flights and meals. Of course it will end up costing way more than the reservation price with all the other expenses involved. I think he is absolutely reckless thinking we can go on this trip. I told him to cancel it. At first he said he would cancel my ticket but still wanted to go himself. He walked away from the discussion and I stewed about it all day and night. I was so mad that I could not fall asleep the entire night. I am normally very level but this had me throwing things just to blow off steam.
I am deeply worried about this marriage because I don't think we'll ever be on the same page about finances. The thought of leaving him is absolutely heartbreaking and unimaginably difficult. But I refuse to get into debt anymore. I used to give into him because I wanted him to be happy but I feel like he is standing in the way of the future I truly want. We haven't tried therapy. But at this point I would be more open to going to a counselor myself because I need to hear outside perspective on whether we can even save this.
What do?? Ugh I am so tired and I feel like I'm trapped.

I am trying to booking a trip from CAI to DFW. I wanted to maximize my PQP earnings on a partner airlines so I looked at flying with Lufthansa.
I created an excel calculator that calculates the distance between two airports and applies the mileage factor based on your fare class for the partner airline to see how many PQP I would earn. I am attaching a picture of my calculator with the earnings I expected from the two trip options in the "PQP after limits" column. I then added the "United Website Amount" column to show what United is showing on their website I will earn.
You will see option two is much better in PQP but I want to know why. The distance in both trips is relatively the same and the fare classes on the first two flights (which are the longest) are the same too. The last flight has a different fare class but its IAH to DFW so not many miles anyway.
I want to book option 1 since there is more time to connect but I dont want to miss out on the PQP. Both tickets $800. Am I missing something here in these two routes?

Some background: Bf and I have been together for around 7 years, met during college and are currently living together and looking to get engaged soon-ish (neither of us are in a rush). We're super happy now, but there have definitely been some bumps in the road along the way, mostly due to him getting in his head about the future/questioning our relationship.
Anyways, since graduating he's been working in a competitive and high paying industry. He's always made very good money, but recently he landed a job paying exponentially more than what he's making now (think seven figure range). I'm incredibly proud of him, but at the same time I can't help but feel nervous about what this means for our future. We've been together for a LONG time, and I feel as though this type of money can really start to change people for the worse, especially when you're thrust into that environment at such a young age and things like marriage/kids/etc., still feel like distant milestones. I trust his character and that he's capable of handling himself, but I also really don't want to end up in the classic cliche of the college couple who met when they were young and then divorce 10 yrs later because the rich husband has found a better option via the excess of options you have access to with that kind of money.
Overall I just feel very anxious about this change, especially knowing we're currently set on the path for engagement. I'd like to talk about this with him but am hoping for advice so I can approach it in a healthy manner and don't come off as insecure or envious of his achievements.

to start off life has been really hard ever since i moved. my whole childhood i had been extremely lonely, i was online schooled, no activities, and any time i saw kids my age they viewed me as weird and i was isolated. depressed from a very young age. it all changed when i moved and finally went to in person school. i made so many great friends and was actually excited to go to school everyday. sadly, i moved back to my old area and am back to being alove. its really upsetting when none of my friends have bothered to reach out to me. its especially hard when i saw my friends dance photos knowing how much i wanted to go. and now ill never go to a dance again. I do have a boyfriend luckily, he makes me really happy and helps me stop being lonely, but he has friends he wants to hang out wiht. i want him to have fun and be happy but its so hard because i basically just sit there waiting for him to come back and hang out with me. im really thankful that i have someone who understands and likes being around me a lot but i really wish i had a friend. i would seriously do anything for a best friend.

i have struggled with my mental health pretty much my whole life and have always been able to hide it for the most part without anyone else knowing the full extent except for my boyfriend. the full extent being for the last 10 years ive at my best been someone who cannot get through a moment of the day without being high as hell and at my worst am a drunken mess cutting myself and begging my boyfriend to kill me because i cant bring myself to do it.
ive never seen a doctor or been diagnosed and to be honest im the most emotionally intelligent person and dont always know how to explain myself even when i do finally bring myself to want to talk about it.
for the last 6 months ive been having a really difficult time in life and ive slowly just lost it. besides my bf that i live with, i havent really talked to anyone outside my house in two months. i know everyone is really concerned to the point where i eventually had to go see my parents at least once because they were showing up at my house to check on me (luckily wasnt home) but they were about call the police to do a welfare check on me.
i cant make eye contact with anyone. i feel like its been so long since ive had conversations in real life i have an incredibly slow response and can never find the words so im just embarrassed to even try now. i know everyone knows something is up with me so im just distancing myself which only causes more of a panic response in them. its humilating for people to see me like this and i just want to be left alone but everyone just keeps pushing and digging into my life trying to get answers.
i could never really commit suicide.. i know this from years of feeling the most worthless creature yet still having some small amount of will to live but i do wish i could just leave every person in my life behind and start over at this point. every person around me seems to just trigger me or set me back and every place i go has horrible memories.
even my boyfriend who has been the only person to see the worst of me and for the most part been helpful has started to become harder to talk to. the new issues ive been struggling with he doesnt understand and i know he never will so its been silent at our home for a little while now.
i just know at this point im never going to get the help i need and it seems self medicating by staying high is the only thing that can get me through the days anymore. im not really even expecting a response but having not talked at all in a few days nevermind about this has been pretty heavy.

Okay pretty happy to find this group cause I just need to vent.
I would of loved to rescue a dog, that was always my plan.. just get a wolfy super mutt. That was always my vision. My partner and I are extremely transient due to working in the bush, we are always moving around and so it would of been vv hard for us to adopt (although I wish we tried harder). So we tried to find a super mutt we could buy. We found a litter of farm puppies that were a mix of 4 breeds Bernese, Pyrenees, poodle, retriever. I thought great that will work! It wasn’t till later I find a plethora of hate for any kind of poodle mix all over Reddit, the internet and everywhere. I began to gravely regret my choice on breed. And low and behold my dog suffers from many of the issues that doodle haters go off about. She’s overly friendly, she jumps up on me like crazy like body checking me out of no where when she’s excited which kind of scares me, she pulls, she’s very anxious and gets over stimulated, she has frustration barrier issues and is pretty reactive but not aggressive at all. Just wants to play and greet other animals and human. So many issues in a dog that I didn’t want and her energy levels are over the top. I feel so awful all the time because I really love her but my relationship with owning this dog is so twisted and I have such a hard time with it. She is trainable and loveable but I struggle with so many of her issues and don’t feel like I have the skills to handle her. Every time she has a reaction when we’re walking I just feel awful. I regret not being more informed about how challenging this poodle mix would be. I feel even further guilty for being one of those irresponsible people. I want to wait it out till she’s 2 and see how she is by then but I just have this pit in my gut feeling like she’s not the dog I’m meant to have and I feel so bad, I want to work through this. I think she would do so much better in a home with a large piece of property and another dog for her to interact with. Deep in my heart I know she’d be happier. She loves other dogs more than she loves anything else. I just don’t know how to work through all these feelings and I don’t know how I got myself into this mess but I’m disappointed in myself and I just want the best outcome for everyone. The amount of time and effort that goes into training these animals is INTENSE. I may be overly sensitive to this experience, but I have not enjoyed owning this dog as a puppy as I thought I would. She is an amazing creature but her energy and issues has dampened my feelings about the whole situation. She needs a sibling and an expensive trainer which I can not provide her currently.

The amount of time and effort that goes into training these animals is INTENSE. I may be overly sensitive to this experience, but I have not enjoyed owning this dog as a puppy as I thought I would. She is an amazing creature but her energy and issues has dampened my feelings about the whole situation. She needs a sibling and an expensive trainer which I can not provide her currently.

My mother comes from a Russian community in Eastern Washington / North Idaho in the US. I speak Russian fluently; top to bottom. I have a friend who wants me to go with him to Poland to “translate” for him; however, I tried to inform him that the people in Poland speak Russian. Now, I’m completely ignorant as to how things work in Eastern Europe, but what I do know is that Poland has its own language and history that is separate from Russia. Most educated individuals know that this is obvious. That being said, I would still like to go on this trip. I need a break from the constant drama and division in the United States.
Will the Russian language at least help me slightly navigate? How many people in Poland actually speak Russian? Will I be seen as weird for being biracial AND speaking a foreign language that’s not English?
Would I be better off just speaking English?
