2023.06.06 18:37 Due-Concentrate-1895 Lead

Just a warning to all of you antique hunters out there, I recently was at a garage sale near my house and naturally was looking for old cast iron cookware and came across a 10” skillet. I asked the old man running the show how much for the pan and he replied 5 bucks but it depends on what your going to use it for. I was confused and said for cooking, he replied with a nope. Apparently he used it to melt down lead for making wheel weight’s for his tractor. Always ask what those pans where used for so you don’t poison you and your family.

Film and TV adaptations of video games have had a tumultuous and checkered history, with the original Super Mario Bros. from 1993 declared among the most disastrous. But off the back of HBO’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us, based on the Playstation/Naughty Dog production and Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an incredible anime series based in the same universe as CD Projekt Red’s story-driven, open-world RPG from 2020; things aren’t looking so bad anymore. However, the trailer for the 2023 Super Mario Bros film certainly got the Nintendo fandom talking, loudly, we might add, about Mario’s new voice. “I totally get it, man,” Pratt told Gizmodo on March 29, 2023. “There’s a passionate fan base and I’m one of the fans. I get it. Mostly, people don’t want something like this to get screwed up. They’re precious about it. They’re careful. And I’m grateful for that.”
In adapting this titular Nintendo character and his universe, Day and Pratt said they have both been huge fans of the IP for years. “My very first memory is the arcade. And then shortly after, probably within six months to a year, the NES came out and we had one in our house and boy, yeah, the rest is history,” Pratt told Gizmodo. “I remember playing Donkey Kong, but I don’t think it was until I owned Super Mario Bros. that I put together that that was Mario and Donkey Kong. That you, kind of, after the fact realized it. But what I remember is my set came with a double [game]. It was both Mario and Zelda. You could play either one and it was great. I played them both as much as I possibly could,” Day said.

Who’s in the Super Mario Bros. Movie movie cast?

Who’s in the Super Mario Bros. Movie cast? It’s a star-studded cast to be sure. In addition to Chris Pratt’s Mario and Charlie Day’s Luigi, here’s who joins the ensemble:

Chris Pratt as Mario: A struggling plumber from Brooklyn, who is accidentally transported to the world of the Mushroom Kingdom and embarks on a quest to save his brother.
Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach: The ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario’s guide, mentor, and love interest.
Charlie Day as Luigi: Mario’s timid, younger fraternal twin brother and fellow plumber, who is captured by Bowser and his army.
Jack Black as Bowser: A monstrous, fire-breathing spiky-shelled turtle and the king of the Koopas, who rules the Dark Lands, steals the powerful Super Star, and plots to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom.
Keegan-Michael Key as Toad: A mushroom humanoid resident of the Mushroom Kingdom, who aspires to go on his first real adventure.
Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong: A powerful gorilla and heir to the throne of the Jungle Kingdom.
Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong: Donkey Kong’s father, who rules the Jungle Kingdom and leads the Kong Army.
Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike: Mario and Luigi’s former boss from the Wrecking Crew.
Charles Martinet, who voices Mario and Luigi in the Mario games, makes cameo appearances throughout the film.
Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek: A Koopa sorcerer and Bowser’s advisor and informant.
As mentioned, there was a pretty significant backlash to Pratt’s casting in the beginning. “There were certainly discussions of how best to voice the character,” Pratt told Yahoo Entertainment. “We tried a lot of different things and ultimately settled on the voice that you hear when you watch the movie. I’m really happy with it, and I think people are gonna really enjoy it.”

In the video games, voice actor Charles Martinet has provided the “Woo-hoos!” for Mario and his brother Luigi and fans will be pleased he makes cameos as several characters in the 2023 film, including Mario and Luigi’s father. Pratt said his inspiration for the voice of Mario was based on a few of his favorite Brooklyn people, though he fell short of naming who. “I had a few [actors] I was aiming at, but if I say them out loud, it could potentially affect people’s ability to watch the performance,” Pratt said. “So, I won’t say it, but I had a signpost.”

2023.06.06 18:22 sparklymineral Mom preventing me from buying a house

So… this is gonna be a bit of a weird one. I’m looking for some advice.
The short version: I have a CI mom and I’m 30 years old. I moved out at age 23 because of many factors (financial instability, mental illness, etc.) and have been on my own since. We are still in touch, but it’s on my terms and I grey rock her. I schedule our phone calls and I generally text her back within ~24-48 business hours. She hates it and wants to talk nonstop and crawl inside of my skin, but she deals with it (and guilt trips me about it, lol).
I’ve been renting the same house for 7 years and I want to finally buy a home. My paternal grandpa passed away about a year ago and left me his money because my dad, uncle, and paternal grandmother are all deceased. My grandpa was a very modest blue collar man who worked a menial job and was a WWII veteran (medic) who became disabled in the war. He left me everything - 40k.
However…. He left it in a TRUST. The trust ends when I am 35 years old (FUCKING INSANE). I will be 31 in two months. Guess who the trustee is? Yep. My CI mom.
She’s refusing to allow me to use 30k of the trust as a down payment on a home. I’ve done my research. I trust my realtor; he is a friend of a friend and has sold to many people within my immediate queetrans community here in my city. The home for sale is ACROSS THE STREET from my home I’ve rented for 7 years. It’s a dream come true.
I get free legal advice through my insurance (very oddly specific and relevant perk) - I called and am waiting for them to call me back. I’m speaking with a financial advisor as well. He agrees that my mom is being unreasonable. He manages my mom’s money, but her account is separate from mine and he cannot call her up to discuss this trust and advise her against her decision. He said that if I can persuade HER into calling HIM about it, then he can tell her she’s being a nutjob.
PS: in January she promised me that I could use 8k from it for my upcoming top surgery if insurance doesn’t cover it, but now I’m not so sure about that either.
SOS??? This is so fucked up.

2023.06.06 18:14 pizzansteve We Are Humanity II

Date: April 6, 2408 POV: Representative Suler of the Fal'rith Conglomerate Location: Aboard TIES-Endurance, Andromeda Galaxy
This, "Lieutenant", closed an opening on the trapezoid object. He waited a few moments for some reason. He suddenly groaned and kicked the trapezoid, the blue light on it turning to green.
In a bright green flash, the aliens vanished one by one. Wilhelm was the last to go, once he was gone, Khodrin blinked out of existance followed by Lilia and Nihje, then the others, then me.
I felt myself slam hard on a cold metal floor. When I rised to look, I saw the other ambassadors groaning and getting up from the floor. Wilhelm and his ontourage seemed unfazed by it and I saw that we were in some room aboard a ship.
I recieved a notification from my translating implant about how it can now translate "English" to Graddath Standard.
Wilhelm then took of his helmet revealing an elderly mammalian with 2 green eyes, a nose, white and grey hair, ears and a mouth. He then spoke with some heavy accent.
"Man, it is hot. Your worlds' climate is on the edge of what we humans can handle, made all the more worse by my power pack having cooling issues."
"I think I'm right to assume that we are on the Endurance yes?" I said, ignoring his comment about our worlds. Some of us were shivering because of the cold climate control of the vessel.
"Yes, you are correct." He replied "Follow me, we are going to the bridge of the Endurance."
"What for?" Ra asked, rubbing his temple.
"A formal meeting in an ideal environment."
He started walking after he said that. Some of us tripped over themselves in a rush to follow Wilhelm and his escorts.
Humans, they call themselves. I thought to myself, And I'm guessing this 'Terra' and the symbol on their chests is their homeworld.
We followed him through high ceiling halls with many doorways leading to all kinds of different rooms. We sometimes encounter crew who look at us mesmerized by our appearances and the sights of aliens who don't attack them in cold blood. We pass by a great hall with many vehicles parked close to each other. Some of these were "tracked vehicles" that were heavily armored and heavily armed. Their cannons looking like a downsized variant of what we saw from the windows of the station.
We then arrive to the bridge where we saw many humans doing their tasks like what a normal council ship would have. All of them wore suits of different colors and there was only one armored human on the doorway. We then approach to what seems to be the captain of this vessel.
"Rear-Admiral Johnathan Beckett, they have arrived."
He turned to look at us and I got a good look at him. He had hazel eyes, no armor except for a grey coat with blue acents and seemingly young. His brass well polished and glowing, he had what appears to be a sidearm at his waist and his boots shone brighter than his brass.
"Welcome aboard xenos." Beckett said, with a hint of nervousness in his voice "I see that this is all of you plus one, right Wilhelm?"
"Yes Rear-Admiral," Wilhelm replied "one of them have no limbs because they seem to be descendants of mollusks so a Rakatoth has to carry her."
"Interesting." Beckett then turned to look out of the window that faces the station.
"I'm sure none of you got hurt during teleportation, yes?"
"Well," Halushe of the Verunian Imperium said, "all but me got hurt, I gracefully floated downwards when all of them slammed on the metal floor." [Description of the Verun: Basically a Terran jellyfish except it floats in the air, 2.10 ft average, 5~ kg average, 4 tentacles, opaque with colors that reflect on personality and emotion, no visible sensory organs, telepathic race]
Beckett turned to look at us once more, "Lieutenant David Montgomery, you bastard." he muttered to himself.
"Apologies for what many of you had to go through," he said with concern in his voice, "hopefully no serious injuries yes?"
"We're fine Rear-Admiral," Nihje said from behind me, catching me by surprise "just a few bruises, that's all."
He sighed, "Good, just making sure." He resumed taking in the sight beyond.
The scenery outside was beautiful, a distant colony world of all the races was outside. The planet named 'Zareth Prime' was home to 1 trillion. Its deep cities serving as more space for its inhabitants. 2 moons orbit the planet making the oceans shine under theire light. The sation we used to be on was something to be desired. Its exterior a far cry to Zareth, its interior was of top quality though, with decorations from all of the council species.
"Beautiful isn't it?" Halushe said, slowly floating towards the window.
"Reminds us vividly of our homeworld." Macaraig said seemingly sucked in with the view.
"Earth, we once called it." Beckett said without taking his eyes off Zareth Prime "Terra is what we refer to it now."
"My translator picked it up as 'Dirt'." Ra said with a light chuckle.
"Exactly the reason why we made the change." Beckett said looking back to us now.
"Right, I carry orders from Terra itself. We are to return to Ra-998b and dock in Sol's Might for negotiations and arrangements for a cultural exchange program." He said with both his hazel eyes unblinking. "Questions?"
"Are we going to be instantly moved again?" Kohdrin said with a hint of nervousness in her voice.
"Sol's Might is way out of the range of any of our teleporters," he spoke quickly "we are doing an FTL jump to Ra-998b. Will take a few hours and a good 10 minutes to charge up the engines, so send out orders now to your people as to not incite panic at out sudden appearance."
Some of us had already done that as we walked pass the Kolshif guards to the weird object, me included. Ra frantically pulled out his pad and sent orders, seemingly forgetting his position, Nihje seemingly taking a peak as to what he was writing. Lilia had the Rakatoth write it out for her due to her race's unfortunate circumstances.
"Admiral, the engines are ready!" a wet human said to Beckett, wiping what seems to be water off his skin, all the while doing a short salute.
"You didn't have to run the whole distance like that," The Rear-Admiral replied in a hushed tone "Right are you all ready?"
The busy ones quickly put down their pads, done with what they are doing.
"Alright, Navigator Tai-Che kick it!"
The Navigator nodded and pulled a lever. I saw the stars bend around us and I felt myself lurch for

2023.06.06 18:11 Ashamed-Ad4508 Regarding Toshiba N300 and Storage Bay Limits

So i've got 2 obvious questions i'd like clarification.
1) I'm doing some Cost/TB calculations my side of the World (Malaysia) and i've just bumped into a very curious thing; the Toshiba N300 is almost 25% cheaper on average vs WD & Seagate. (Depending if you're comparing between exos X16, WD Red, Red Pros, IronWolf & IW Pro's; the N300 is about 15-35% cheaper Price per TB/GB). BUT.. as Toshiba is the outlier here.. wondering what's the feedback/experiend from you guys? *(I'm still waiting for the sales guys to confirm if its using SMR or CMR; but marketing material says CMR). Havent dug/studied the backblaze data sets yet but i'd like some real world TRUENAS home users feedback on this
2) The N300's are saying the suggested installation is a max 8 Bay system *(Also applies to the NON PRO series of WD RED and Seagate IronWolfs as well). I'm wondering; as RAID usually allows HDD's to be installed based on storage capacity, in a home environment where there's likely no server rack with this many HDD's; is this even relevant ? *i remember reading that in a server room environment; its because in the off chance a large RAID is running; there's a chance the harmonised vibrations on the rack will affect HDD reliability). But that's assuming its all the same drives running the same RAID. But if its several different RAIDS *(and differeing brands); this preferred 8-bay limit shouldnt be a problem now should it? *(especially for home users who dont have that many HDD's in a rack anyway; or are running the server on the floor).

2023.06.06 18:01 MiamisLastCapitalist Thoughts on helmets and external face screens.

Thoughts on helmets and external face screens.
So these days in sci-fi helmets basically come in three styles:
  • No visor, a fully armored helmet with some cameras and a screen inside
  • Partial visor, just for the eyes
  • Full faced visor, entire face visible (inspired by EVA suits), optional tinting
They all have their pros and cons. The no-visor is clearly more armored but makes it difficult for other people to see your expressions. I realize though... That's not necessarily the case. Perhaps inspired by Apple's news from yesterday, I realize you can have an entirely enclosed helmet with an external screen projecting a recreation of your face, couldn't you? Just as sturdy as an armored shell, but appearing transparent. And sure that external screen may get damaged by debris or bullets or whatever the helmet is meant to protect you from, but the screen could also be easily hot-swapped and replaced. You could project your face to allies, tint/cover it when you want to be anonymous, or display critical information about the wearer if injured.
Do you think in our far spacefaring future this might actually be the standard for EVA or combat helmets? OR do you think this is more of a gimmick?

2023.06.06 17:52 i11702 Which comics should I read first?

This summer I’m trying to get into Marvel, and so far I’ve really enjoyed the first few movies I’ve seen (iron man 1 & 2, captain America). I’ve also had a separate interest growing in graphic novels, but then I realized that the Marvel comics could be perfect for me.
If I know little to nothing about anyone’s backstory or the Marvel universe, do you guys have any recs on where I should start? Thanks!

2023.06.06 17:49 Methos0012 [3.21] Loot from 500x max investment The Feared Invitations (Uber Atziri, Uber Cortex, Uber Uber Elder, Flawless Chayula)

This league there have been a lot of different opinions about the profitability of The Feared Invitation. While Empyriangaming´s small sample size certainly showed a volatility in short term profit margins, bigger sample sizes by u/ToiletOfGold and u/ixmike88 showed that it is still profitable. So here I am with another big sample size that I am going to compare with my findings from last league.
Here is the data from 500 max investment 100%+ IIQ Feared Runs (including Uber Uber Elder, Uber Atziri, Uber Cortex and Flawless Chayula). I´ve been doing 5 x 100 Runs with 3 Quad Stashes of Loot I had to sort out after each 100 Runs. One full run takes me 10-12 minutes, so I was able to do 5 runs per hour.
For each encounter, I am going to give a little advice, followed by a breakdown of cost & profit/loss, a conclusion and a comparison. These lists only contain the profitable and very rare drops. Values are average market prices.
My build: Cold Flicker Strike Slayer (15 Frenzy / 15 Endurance Charges) PoB: LINK (Uber DPS Config)
Atlas Tree: Uber notables, Wandering Path with all Synth nodes
Uber Atziri Make sure you can burst her down fast enough so she can only ever enter her Split Phase (the Add Phase takes far too long). Reflect immunity required. Cost: 0.25 div per Set; 125 div total
Drop (Avg. Value per) Amount Total Value
Atziri´s Reflection (1.6 div) 5 8 div
Atziri´s Disfavour (4 div) 0 -
The Price of Devotion (26 div) 0 -
Triumvirate Authority (-) 6 -
Atziri's Acuity (-) 6 -
The Ultimatum Aspect Fragment and the Sacrifical Garb Base Armour seem to drop every 3rd or 4th encounter. Since they dont really sell, I didnt bother picking them up after a while. Total loss (Uber Atziri): - 117 div Conclusion & Comparison: Uber Atziri is still just entry cost for doing The Feared. Atziri needs some additional high tier drops. No changes compared to 3.20.
Uber Cortex (Replica/Default) Boss rush. Make sure you can run any mod combination, have a second character set up that can do it or in the worst case, buy a carry service. The Replica version is a little cheaper, has more global map modifiers, can be a lot more difficult and has the identical drop pool. In very rare cases, you get Synth map modifiers that make it worth full clearing the map (e.g.: %ChanceToDropDivCards and %IncRarityDroppedBy). Cost: 1.5 div per Map; 750 Div total
Drop (Avg. Value per) Amount Total Value
Rational Doctrine (8 div) 9 72 div
Bottled Faith (1.5 div) 46 69 div (medium variance)
Garb of the Ephemeral (30c) 57 7.8 div
Forgotten Reliquary Key (4 div) 7 28 div
Nebulis (10c) 147 6.7 div
Notable Synth Item drops: +1FrenzyShieldSTR (50 div), +1PowerShieldINT (50 div), ExplodeWand (40 div), %IntRing (30 div), DexStackBow (15 div), ExplodeStaff (8 div), +1PowerShieldSTR (2x 8 div), GraceAuraEffRing (5 div), AuraEffHelmet (2x 5 div), FlammabilityOnHitRing (5 div), IntStackingWand (3 div), IgniteSceptre (3 div), CritMultiRing (3 div), %DexBoots (2 div) and around 15 items that have sold for up to 1 div. Total loss (Uber Cortex): - 567 div (without Synth items), - 310 div (with Synth items) Conclusion & Comparison: Pretty disappointing but to be expected, Cortex profit heavily relies on amazing Synth drops. The unique drops are worth less in 3.21 but with Crucible around, the Nebulis easily sell in bulk.
Uber Uber Elder Personally, I found this to be the most difficult of fights (Flicker Strike is not a great skill for it). Just run circles around the bosses and try to burst down the shaper as fast as possible after every Add Phase so he doesn´t use his Bullet Hell. Good luck dodging if Maven decides to clone the bosses in the arena. Cost: 1.5 div per Set; 750 Div total
Drop (Avg. Value per) Amount Total Value
Watcher´s Eye iLvL 87 (4,5 div) 185 832.5 div
Orb of Dominance (1 div) 55 55 div
Sublime Vision (8 div) 8 64 div
Decaying Reliquary Key (4 div) 5 20 div
Double Impresence (-) 12 Sold two (22 Div, 4 Div)
The Shieldbearer (2,5 div) 5 12.5 div
Eternity Shroud (45c) 5 1 div
Voidforge (8 div) 1 8 div
The Gulf (20c) 5 0.9 div
Indigon (30c) 56 7.6 div
Soul Ascension (-) 7 -
Voidfletcher (-) 66 -
Total profit (Uber Uber Elder): + 277 div Conclusion & Comparison: The Watcher´s Eyes themselves easily pay for the Uber Uber Elder Runs. Very profitable by itself. Voidforge actually exists as drop. No changes compared to 3.20.
Flawless Chayula [BREACH REWORK] Breachstones also roll random modifiers, so they can be a little tricky. If you dont use CastOnDeath+Portal, make sure to place a portal halfway through the Breach. Flawless Breachstones are 45 seconds faster than the normal version. Chayula can be permafrozen so that one was the easiest encounter for me. Chaos resistance helps a lot. You can level Gems in your Offhands. As of 3.21 you can use It That Fled´s Breachstone Bargains to increase the rewards of the Breachstones. They unfortunately do not speed up the encounter itself. Cost: 1.5 div per Stone; 750 Div total
Drop (Avg. Value per) Amount Total Value
Fractured GlobalDef Grasping Mail (50 div) 11 550 div
Uul-Netol´s Vow (8 div) 9 72 div (high variance!)
United in Dream (40c) 169 30.7 div
Red Nightmare (150c) 18 12.3 div
Green Nightmare (1.5 div) 25 37.5 div
Blue Nightmare (40c) 26 4.7 div
Skin of the Lords (-) 19 250 div (Details below)
I´ve dropped 63 fractured Grasping Mails (71 in 3.20), so you can still expect one to drop every 7-8 runs. The mods are weighted (1 in 4.25 chance to hit Global Defense), so you can expect to drop one FracGlobalDef every 32 runs. I´ve dropped 19 Skins of the Lords. These have a really high variance because of socket colors and the Notable. The most valuable ones had at least 3 blue sockets and a good notable: GhostDance (50 div), Iron Will (39 div), GlancingBlows (30 div), SupremeEgo (25 div), Acrobatics (18 div), AvatarOfFire (20 div), Magebane (15 div) Total loss/profit: - 40 div (without Skins), + 210 div (with Skins) Conclusion & Comparison: I was quite unlucky considering the FracGlobalDefense droprate (11 instead of avg. 15), otherwise the Breachstones would have easily payed for themselves. While there was absolutely no reason to run normal Breachstones in 3.20, I can´t say the same for this league since I dont know the droprates of Blessings and Skin of the Loyals.
The Feared Invitation [ATLAS CHANGES] Make sure you can run any mod combination or have counter measures available (e.g. I used an Enduring Mana flask on "no leech" invitations). I prefer to kill Cortex and Atziri first if possible. Invitations were rolled to 8 mod 100+IIQ, you can vendor 5 failed corruptions for a new one. You also drop a lot of invitations from the bosses. Cost: ~45c per 8-mod Invitation, 100 div total
Drop (Avg. Value per) Amount Total Value
Maven´s Writ (1.4 div) 632.2 885 div
Uber Elder Red Fragment (0.5 div) 173 86.5 div
Uber Elder Black Fragment (0.2 div) 165 33 div
Bottled Faith (1.5 div) 28 42 div (medium variance)
Watcher´s Eye iLvL 85 (1 div) 93 93 div
Blessings of Chayula (1.2 div) 4 4.8 div
Orb of Conflict (0.25 div) 110 27.5 div
Dying Sun (20c) 39 3.5 div
Garb of the Ephemeral (30c) 28 3.8 div
Atziri´s Reflection (1.6 div) 1 1.6 div
Nebulis (10c) 118 5.3 div
Triumvirate Authority (-) 15 -
Atziri's Acuity (-) 12 -
Skin of the Loyal (-) 29 90.5 div (Details below)
I also dropped 86 Awakened Gems, the most expensive ones being several EleDmgWithAtks and VoidManipulations. Profit from Gems is around 16 div total. Two double corrupted uniques sold for 1 div each. Notable Synth item drops: SpellDDBow (25 div), SpellDDNebulis (20 div), ExplodiWand (25 div), EleWeaknessOnHitRing (5 div) I´ve dropped 29 Skin of the Loyal, the most valuable ones with 3B2R1G (20 div), 4B2G (12 div), 4B1R1G (5 div) Total profit/loss (Feared): + 1102 div (without Skins/Synth), +1267 div (with Skins/Synth) Conclusion & Comparison: Even tho they removed the small Maven Crucible IIQ nodes on the Atlas, the higher Maven´s Writs price as a result make up for it. The removal of Flawless Chayula Breachstone drops in The Feared put a huge dent into the profit that can not get fully covered by Skin of the Loyal drops.
Notable Drops: While I dropped 2 Mirrors of Kalandra in 3.20, I did not drop a single one in 3.21. I might just go for another 500 runs until I drop one.
Profit from 500 Full Runs: +653 Div (Default Drops) // +332 Div (Synth) // + 338 Div (Skins) Profit per Full Run: 1,3 Div per Run (Default), 2,6 Div per Run (Default/Synth/Skins) Profit per Hour (5 Runs/hour): 7-13 Div* *doesnt include the time to sell/buy/sort
Final conclusion: The Feared is still very profitable, even tho not as good as it was in 3.20. Most uniques are worth less, we lost the IIQ on the Atlas and Skin of the Lords/Loyals add another layer of drop RNG.

2023.06.06 17:31 forgottenbattle From Retail Salesman to Barber Trainee

So to keep it short, i have been a sales man for several years and decided to change careers because of the stress i was experiencing.
I was not looking after my self and i was being treated like sh*t by people everyday. I know for a fact people will never change but at least i am doing what i like now, and i am planning to keep doing what i love. I was spending all my money on weed and not following any of my goals.
I decided to attend a barber course which makes me happy at the moment. Its like a reminder when looking in the mirror i need to take care of my clients the same as me and even better.
I am currently a few months in, ending in September, and today my teacher called me to ask me if i am interested in starting as trainee at a barber shop of a friend of his.
Of course i accepted.
I am very excited and I wanted to share this with you guys.

2023.06.06 17:23 maximusaemilius Humans literally need to tear their muscles to get stronger and need to continously do stuff to stay fit.

The human pulled to a stop, huffing and puffing, hands on his knees as he took in great big breaths. Krill could see ribs through his skin as the great bellows expanded and then contracted. Sweat slicked the skin as the body desperately tried to cool itself.
"Heart rate 165."
The human straightened himself out, coughing once or twice to clear his throat, reaching out and wiping his face with a towel.
He threw the towel over one shoulder and stretched the large muscle groups in his chest, stomach and back, pulling tight.
Sunny leaned against the wall just to their right, both sets of arms crossed over her chest,
"So, what is this supposed to be for? Is this like a dominance thing or something?”
The human wiped his face again and raised an eyebrow,
"It's exercises, Sunny. You know? So I can be fit enough to pass the UNSC PT exam, or perhaps so that I can do my job better, or maybe because I look better when I'm more fit.”
Sunny turned her head to look at him, her eyes scrunching down a little, as Krill went to take notes on a clipboard.
"You mean... You didn't just grow to being that size?”
The human glanced down at Krill incredulous,
"IS she serious? Do the Drev like, not have to work out?"
Krill shook his head,
"Drev do not have subcutaneous fat deposits like humans do. Any acquired deposits are stored below the carapace between the connective tissue, padding them down and giving them more protection."
Sunny looked between them in confusion,
"Wait, hold on... I'm confused."
The human toweled off his hair,
"I have to work out to look like this Sunny. If I don't use it, I lose it."
She turned to look at Krill.
He tucked the holo-pad under one arm,
"You see, Sunny. Humans are meant to adapt. They can adapt mentally, and they can adapt physically. The body changes to match the requirements of its environment. Sometimes this takes years to do, for instance if you take a light skinned population of humans and put them somewhere with a lot of sun, and keep that population in complete isolation, after a few generations, the skin will darken to compensate for the increased UV light. However, these things happen on a smaller level. The body fluctuates to adapt to the amount of physical work which is required."
The human nodded,
"Exactly. Running strengthens the heart, and it increases the hemoglobin in my blood, so that I can run for a longer time with more oxygen. If I were to stop running, I would lose all of that and have to work back up."
Sunny stared at him incredulous,
"So, you have to force your body to be able to perform correctly. Like, it can't just DO what it needs to do, but you have to convince it over years of training to be able to do what you want?”
The man shrugged,
"Well anything sucks when you phrase it like that."
He turned and motioned them to follow,
"Historically, humanity was evolved in an environment with little food. We ate a diet heavy in proteins, fiber, and natural carbs from fruit. Fat is an essential part of a human's diet, but it is relatively difficult to find in nature. Because of this, the body adapted to make humans love and crave fatty and sugary foods for energy. Well since well into the twentieth eighteenth century, fatty foods were becoming commonplace, and easy to get our hands on, but the body wasn't aware of that, so it continued to treat these new fatty foods the way our bodies would have treated them back when we were huntegatherers storing every last bit up for use later."
Sunny followed after in fascination,
"I see, so now you have... Too much of a food that your body craves."
The human looked over his shoulder,
"You got it, and the body doesn't know when to stop storing fat. It'll just keep going. So, if I were to sit on my ass all day eating chips, I would lose the muscle and I would get bigger as fat deposits were stored up for energy."
Sunny shrugged,
"What is the problem with that?"
The human tapped his chin lightly,
"A few things, I guess. For me, at least, if I were to just stop working out, I wouldn't be able to do my job as well, I wouldn't be able to run as far, or to jump as high, or to lift as much. And lifting myself up in a pullup would be impossible, and considering the amount of times we have all almost fallen off a cliff, or had to haul ourselves up rope, you would think that would be a bad idea. Not to mention that the larger you are, the harder your heart has to work as the blood supply is forced to expand, and since you aren't working out your heart it gets weaker but has to do more work, which –in turn– increased the risk of heart issues. Compounding all that I wouldn't be able to sit in a cockpit or pilot a jet properly."
Sunny shook her head,
"That seems like a very... annoying model. You can never just relax. You always have to work to keep your body where it should be. And the amount of self-control you have to have..."
The human laughed,
"You have no idea how much self-control I need when a box of doughnuts gets in my way."
He sighed,
"Keeping my abs has been a real struggle, but luckily the UNSC drilled some self-discipline into me when I was still young."
"So, you weren't always this big?”
The human snorted,
"No not in the slightest. In fact, I was so skinny, you could see my heart beating through my rib cage.”
Sunny grimaced.
"Yeah I know, kinda gross. Those are your two directions. If you don't work out your either super scary skinny, or you get a bit big. If you're working out right, you get muscles."
He turned around, flexing proudly for them to outline the lines of his biceps, chest and stomach.
Sunny would have rolled her eyes back into her head, but she supposed, now that she knew he had to work for it, she was at least somewhat proud of him.
"Ok, I have a question then."
"Shoot."
"Can you get bigger?"
More laughter,
"Oh yeah, totally, but I'm not THAT dedicated."
They were just coming around a corner when the commander skidded to a halt, eye to chest with an absolutely massive human.
Even Sunny stepped back in surprise.
This human was large enough to look Sunny in the eye, with shoulders about as wide as her, and a chest that looked like it could have benched a small car.
It was almost comical, a moment ago Sunny had assumed that the commander was a large human.
"Wow there, big man. I'd rather not get steamrolled today, thanks."
The large human glanced down at the commander.
"Sorry sir."
He grunted, before stepping around and walking up the hall.
Sunny watched him go,
"What do you have to do to get that big!?”
"You practically have to live at the gym."
They turned the corner, walking into a large room, with strange machines of unknown use.
And in here there were humans of all sizes and shapes, but most of them absolutely massive. Those who lacked height, did not lack muscle.
Male humans, female humans, all of the above.
A tiny female human stood at one of these machines, carrying a bar on her shoulders with enough weight that sunny assumed it might crush her. Instead, she squatted down to the floor and stood back up.
The captain blinked and motioned towards her
"Holy shit."
"She squats more than me by the way. You see these guys are insane. I work out to maintain, these guys do it because it’s their hobby."
Krill floated upwards to whisper in Sunny's ear,
"For the muscle to enlarge, the fibers must tear open, and then the body comes back and repairs the tear to withstand the pressures that tore it in the first place.”
Sunny stared at Krill incredulously,
"So you're telling me, they just... Tear themselves apart to get like that?”
The commander left them standing in place, walking over to the wall and jumping upwards, catching his hands around a black bar welded to the wall, the muscles in his back, just below the shoulder blades flexed as he pulled himself upwards, the muscles in his shoulder blades rolling under the skin.
They continued to watch as the commander did his set, a little bit of everything for demonstration purposes. Getting off one of the leg machines, one of these large female humans walked past, sitting where he had just sat, reaching out, pulling out the peg and bringing the weight almost to the bottom of the plates.
The commander leaned in,
"See her, she could probably crush your skull using just her legs."
He sighed,
"Man, I only WISH I could be that badass."
”Yeah, I am sure THAT’S whats you are wishing when you see those thighs…”
He looked up at Sunny,
"Sometimes I come here just to knock myself down a peg."
Across the room, one of these massive humans was hauling a huge bar, lined with weight on either side up over his head like it was nothing.
"You see that, that would probably invert my spine if I tried to do it."
"Must you be so graphic?"
"Yeah, because that's how much of a wuss I am."
Looking around, Sunny wasn't convinced entirely of his status as a wuss.
He had all the requisite muscle groups of even the largest humans, and more than some. There were great swatches of the human population who, even here, were missing some things.
A few of the humans had large arms, but small legs, big legs, but small arms, no chest, or chest and no abdominal muscles.
Yes sure, he may have been smaller than their largest, but he WAS well rounded…Arms, chest, stomach, legs, back and shoulders.
She found herself surprised at the smug satisfaction in comparing her human to the other humans.
Sure, her human couldn't bench THAT much, but he also had better legs, so there.
"You ok, Sunny?"
She turned her head to look at him.
"Just thinking."
She said and he shrugged at her and returned to do his workout.
It's hard to be a human.
They have to work for everything they have, especially when it comes to their body.

2023.06.06 17:21 ArthurDrakoni Riordan Retrospective: Daughter of the Deep

Welcome once again to my Riordan Retrospective. For those of you just joining the fun, this is my look back at the works of Rick Riordan. That means Percy Jackson, its sequels, and spin-offs. This is less of a formal review and more of a relaxed look back.
Last time, we finished our look back at The Trials of Apollowith a look back at The Tower of Nero. We thought that we’d said goodbye to the worlds of Rick Riordan. Little did we know that a new book was about to surface. As such, we’re taking a look back at Daughter of the Deep.
Ana Dakkar is about to finish her freshman year at Harding-Pencroft Academy. It is a five-year academy specializing in marine science. She, and her nineteen classmates, are about to begin their freshmen trials. Harding-Pencroft holds its students very high standards. However, before they can take off, the school is destroyed by a series of sonic torpedoes. The remaining students and professors of Harding-Pencroft regroup aboard their yacht the Varuna. Ana discovers several major revelations. Jules Verne’s novels 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island were based on actual events. Captain Nemo was indeed a real person, and Ana is his direct descendant. In fact, the whole point of Harding-Pencroft Academy is to safeguard Nemo’s legacy and technology. Their next stop is Lincoln Island, the final resting place of Nemo and the Nautilus. But danger lurks around every corner as the survivors of Harding-Pencroft are hunted by their old rivals: Land Academy.
Well, it looks like we’re back sooner than I expected. I thought we’d be back for that Irish Mythology book Rick said he was planning. However, that seems to have been put on the back-burner. Daughter of the Deep apparently has been a long time coming. Way back in 2009, Disney executives asked Rick what Disney property he would want to write a book based on. It could be anything he wanted. He chose 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, as the 1954 film adaptation is one of his favorite movies. Technically, Disney only owns the rights to the movie, not the original book. The original Verne novel has long since slipped into the public domain. I’m tempted to think that Rick was, at least somewhat, trolling the executives.
I actually went back and watched the 1954 movie adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I agree with Rick here. The movie is, I must say, a truly underrated gem among live-action Disney films. In fact, I might even give it its own review at some point. Now, the movie does take some liberties with the source material. Though, personally, I’d say that was to its benefit, as it made for a more engaging story that worked better in film. Verne was known for doing a lot of research with his novels, and often devoted entire paragraphs to explaining the science in detail. Unfortunately, this does make for a rather dry reading experience. I’ve heard Verne works better in the original French, but that is a language I do not speak. Amusingly, students at Harding-Pencroft are required to read 20,000 Leagues Under the Seaand The Mysterious Island. Ana found them both to be a bit dry for her taste. I myself enjoyed The Mysterious Islandslightly more than 20,000 Leagues, but it still suffered from many of the same issues.
I’ve heard a few people wonder what it might be like if Rick Riordan were to write a science fiction novel. Well, we now have our answer. We know more about the surface of the Moon than we do our own deep oceans. Twelve people have walked on the surface of the Moon, but only two have ever been to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Ocean-based science fiction is still comparatively rare compared to space-based or terrestrial-based science fiction. So, I’m glad to see that Daughter of the Deep tapped into some of the vast potential of ocean-based science fiction.
Now, I should probably clarify that Daughter of the Deep is set outside of the Riordanverse. Rick has confirmed that it takes place in its own self-contained world. So, don’t expect to see any cameos from Percy, Annabeth, or any other Riordanverse characters. Still, it is similar enough in terms of style to a typical Riordanverse novel, and thus, I’ve chosen to include it as part of the retrospective.
Speaking of style, let’s begin there. Rick has said he took a film writing course before he wrote Daughter of the Deep. That is very apparent in how the prose itself is written. It reads very much like a movie script. The narration is presented in first-person present tense. This helps add to the sense of action and urgency as the plot movies along. The pacing also feels very much like what you might find in a movie. We got a lot of action scenes in quick succession. We get the usual info dumps, but we don’t really take as much time for introspection. As we’ll discuss a bit later, this lack of introspection was very much to the book’s detriment. I’m willing to bet that all this is very much by design. Daughter of the Deep is being adapted into a movie on Disney+. In fact, the movie was announced even before the book came out. So, it certainly feels like Rick wrote Daughter of the Deep with an eye towards the movie adaption.
I would have liked if we had gotten to explore Harding-Pencroft Academy a bit more before it got destroyed. What brief glimpses we do see are utterly fascinating. The students are all decided into four different houses based on their area of study. Yeah, they’ve heard all the Harry Potter jokes plenty of times. Though, personally, when I saw the initials HP in an ocean-themed book, I briefly wondered if Rick Riordan was going to tackle the Lovecraft Mythos. Back on topic, the houses are Dolphin, Shark, Cephalopod, and Orca. Dolphin focuses on communications, exploration, cryptography, and counterintelligence. Shark handles command, combat, weapons systems, logistics. Cephalopod deals with engineering, applied mechanics, innovation, and defensive systems. Orca is all about medicine, psychology, education, marine biology, and communal memory. If you’re wondering about that last one, it basically means the history of Harding-Pencroft and Captain Nemo.
One of the things I appreciated was that each of the four main characters is from a different house. One of my gripes about Harry Potter is that pretty much all the important characters come from Gryffindor. Well, unless they’re a villain, and come from Slytherin. Ravenclaw had Luna and Cho, I guess, but Hufflepuff got the short end of the stick for sure. Getting back on track, having the four main protagonists of Daughter of the Deep be from different houses provided a theme that everyone has something unique to bring to the table. You can also see it as advocating for multiculturalism, but without being preachy about it. However, I do have on criticism. House Orca needed a better name. Orcas are a type of dolphin, the largest, in fact. We’ve got representatives for mammals, fish, and mollusks. How’s about giving some love to the reptiles? Personally, I would have named them House Sea Turtle instead. Or failing that, show some love to the echinoderms, and name them House Seastar. House Sea Cucumber would also work. Don’t give me that look! Sea cucumbers are noble animals and wonders of nature.
I do wish that we’d gotten to see more of Harding-Pencroft before it was destroyed. What brief glimpses we do get are utterly fascinating. As you might expect, they have quite an expansive aquarium full marine creatures. Upperclassmen train in submarine simulations using full-size mock-up submarines submerged in deep pools. However, the most fascinating class is one where students get to consider, and theorize, about the ways technology and science might have developed had history gone differently. As a major fan of alternate history I have but one thing to say: sign me up now! Well, its actually there as a way to slowly ease the students into learning the truth about Captain Nemo and his inventions. Still, sounds like a very fun class to take. I also liked how the various sections of the school are named after famous ocean explorers. There’s one part named after the Chinese navigator Zheng He, and one named after the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.
I thought all of the diving scenes were particularly well-written. Rick Riordan has a true passion for scuba diving. This really shines through during the diving scenes. I also really like how the diving suits all use jet-propulsion that mimics the siphons of cephalopods. That was a really creative touch.
Okay, let’s talk about the characters. Ana is the protagonist, but I want to save her for last. We’ll start with her roommates, and best friends, Nelinha and Ester. Nelinha da Silva grew up in an orphanage in Rio de Janeiro, but got to attend Harding-Pencroft on a scholarship. She’s also the closest the series gets to referencing Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I can best describe Nelinha as what would happen if Charles Beckendorf and Silena Beauregard were to have a kid. And, you know, if they were still alive. She’s a complete mechanical genius, and geeks out over machines and engine parts. She’s a member of House Cephalopod, naturally. However, she is also obsessed with fashion, and always makes sure to look her best at all times. Nelinha doesn’t just pack outfits, she packs entire wardrobes.
One of my prior complaints about Rick Riordan is that he only seems to know how to write one type of female character. Namely, he seems to believe that being a strong female character means being a tomboy who hates all things girly. So, it was nice to see Nelinha as a course correction on that front. Nelinha being from Brazil is likely a nod to how popular Rick Riordan’s books are in Brazil. So, I’m sure Brazilian fans were excited to finally get a Brazilian main character.
On the flipside, we also get Ester Harding. She’s a member of House Orca. She is a blood relative of one of the founders of Harding-Pencroft. She is also the first autistic character in a Rick Riordan book. I’m still bitter about how he wrote a Muslims character before he wrote an autistic character. In the Riordanverse, anyone can be a demigod, unless you’re autistic, it would seem. I had high hopes for Ester. You don’t see autistic girls too often in the media. Riordan has said that he got sensitivity readers to help him with writing characters from different cultural backgrounds. However, it would seem none of them offered insight into autistic people. It almost feels like Riordan watched a couple episodes of The Good Doctor and was like “I got this!” You know those TikTok clips of that guy having a temper tantrum while shouting “I am a surgeon!” Yeah, that’s The Good Doctor. It was another show I had high hopes for, but fell back on stereotyping autistic people. Don’t get me started on my problems with The Good Doctor, we’ll be here all day.
Anyway, Ester displays a number of stereotypical traits. She yo-yos between being basically non-verbal, and shouting at the top of her lungs. She does this all in a robotic monotone voice. In contrast to Nelinha, Ester has basically no fashion sense, and seems to be going for the long-lost daughter of Albert Einstein look. Ester also doesn’t have much in the way of common sense, and though it never comes up, she’s probably Jewish. Not too many gentiles name Ester. She’s got an excellent memory, to the point of being almost eidetic, but that’s somewhat accurate. Well, maybe not eidetic, but most autistic people do often have amazing memories. How do you think I’m about to write these retrospectives?
Ana briefly remarks about how some people claim that autistic people can’t feel love or other emotions, and that Ester proves this isn’t true, due to how empathetic she is. Again, this is true, as autistic people can be quite empathetic. Though, I can’t help but wonder if Disney specially made Rick insert that line to cover their asses. See, this isn’t the first time Disney has tackled autism. There was an episode of Girl Meets World about how we should all be nice to autistic people. All well and good, but they also claim that autistic people are incapable of experiencing emotions, including love.
Gemini Twain has been assigned as Ana’s bodyguard. He’s a no-nonsense member of House Shark. He’s also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. This is certainly an interesting choice, as Gemini is also Black. Historically, Mormons haven’t exactly gotten along well with Black people. Or Native Americans, or Polynesians, or…well, pretty much anybody who isn’t White. The most infamous instance was when Mormon schools refused to desegregate. The American government threatened to revoke their tax exemption status, but wouldn’t you know it, Mormon God rather conveniently changed his mind about Black people. Though, Gemini’s faith doesn’t really come up that much. He doesn’t like swearing or taking the lord’s name in vein, and he mentions his grandma raised him and his brother in the LDS church, but that’s about it. Well, he did get into a minor scuffle with Nelinha. Gemini’s brother went on his mission trip to Brazil, and Gemini assumed Nelinha would know his brother, because she’s from Brazil.
Well, nice touch having one of the non-White characters be flawed enough to be accidentally racist. I remember back in The Hammer of Thor retrospective when I said, paraphrased, “A Muslim demigod? What’s next, a Mormon demigod?” I have on occasion wondered if Rick Riordan reads these retrospectives. Probably a long shot, but you never know.
Technically, there is a fifth main character: the Nautilusitself. It took until about halfway through the book before the Nautilus showed up. Yeah, this book has some pacing issues. The Nautilus has what can best be described as an artificial intelligence system. Also, apparently it also includes some organic components. As you might imagine, it is extremely untrustworthy of anyone who isn’t a blood relative of Prince Dakkar, aka Captain Nemo. So, Ana’s biometrics are key to unlocking the Nautilus.
Unfortunately, the Nautilus also highlights one of the issues I had with the book. Apparently, every major invention of the 20th Century was a result of Harding-Pencroft discreetly releasing them to the public. That, or Land Institute stealing them. This caused Daughter of the Deep to evoke the Great Man Theory of History. The theory goes that society gets stuck in ruts until a great man, and it’s always a man, shakes up the status quo and moves the world forward. This view has largely fallen out of favor with mainstream historians. Most historians emphasis how the changes were put into motion, often by complex chains of influences, long before the supposedly great men came about.
You do kind of get this with the main Riordanverse, where pretty much anyone who did anything was either a demigod or a magician. However, that was softened by just how many demigods and magicians there were throughout history. So, it felt more like a team-effort. By contrast, Daughter of the Deep gave us a single scientific übermensch who, apparently, leapfrogged from steam-power to cold fusion reactors. Now, granted, this is also true of Nemo in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Still, maybe Rick shouldn’t have depicted Nemo in such a lock, stock, and barrel sort of way.
And that segues into my next point. Harding-Pencroft is deathly afraid of letting the general public get access to Nemo’s technology. They only release technology sparingly, and only when they feel humanity has earned it. Uh, and what metric do they use to determine how worthy humanity is? Beats me, the book offers no details. The adults all make a big deal about how corporations would try to monopolize Nemo’s technology, but nobody ever suggests releasing it as open-source tech. Well, I know the real reason for that. There’s no way that Disney, the poster boy for copyright abuse, is going to be advocating for open-source. A particularly facepalm worthy moment is that fact that Harding-Pencroft refuses to release cold fusion technology…despite climate change being a serious issue! The book would have you believe Harding-Pencroft are the good guys. However, I’m tempted to think Land Institute had a point about Harding-Pencroft being corrupt and selfish.
Hey, wait a minute. Harding-Pencroft is a secretive organization that is very selective of its membership. It trains its students so that, effectively, they’re cut-off from the outside world. They indoctrinate their students from a young age into their views. They have charismatic leaders and founders. Yikes, I hope the cafeteria never served Kool-Aid! Harding-Pencroft is a cult!
It would seem that Harding-Pencroft has something akin to the Prime Detective from Star Trek. There has been a lot of debate about the morality of the Prime Detective. The main thinking seems to be don’t give advanced weaponry to civilizations that aren’t morally mature. The Original Seriesalso says that it is okay to break the Prime Directive if a planet is in imminent danger. Contrast this with Next Generation, where one episode has Captain Picard dithering about if he should save a planet, even if it break the Prime Directive. Of course, the worst offender was Voyager. It had an episode where the moral was, basically, don’t save a baby trapped in a burning car, or else the baby will grow-up to be Hitler. Yeah, the Prime Directive kind of devolved into an immoral religious dogma as Star Trek went on.
Point is, Harding-Pencroft’s Prime Directive seems to lean towards that of the later Star Trek entries. Apparently, screw the planet, we need to keep the tech away from corporations! The irony of Disney railing against corporations is so thick you can practically cut it with a machete. Also, if the concern is that the corporations would hoard stuff like the cure for cancer, well, how’s that any different than what Harding-Pencroft is doing?
Much is made about how Ana must choose to reconcile both the good and the bad of Nemo’s legacy. However, nothing really comes of this. We don’t see her seriously debate or challenge Harding-Pencroft and Land Institute’s views of Nemo. In fact, she gets indoctrinated into Harding-Pencroft’s views pretty quickly. It would have been a great opportunity to show Nemo’s complexity, not just tell us about it. How many innocent lives did he take in his quest for vengeance? Should he have shared his technology with the oppressed peoples chafing under the yoke of colonialism? Is it possible that Land Institute has some valid points, and that Harding-Pencroft has lost its way? All excellent questions that sadly go unanswered.
As for why that is, it ties into the biggest problem I have with Daughter of the Deep. Overall, it feels like merely the novelization of the yet to be produced movie. I was hoping that the novel would be able to stand on its own merits. However, Riordan clearly wrote it so that the adoption process would be streamlined. Debating ethics might not translate to film. Though, it could work in the hands of a competent scriptwriter.
I feel this streamlining was ultimately to the novel’s determent. I certainly didn’t hate Daughter of the Deep. It had plenty of the action and adventure you’d expect from a Rick Riordan novel. However, for every thing I liked, there was almost always something else I didn’t like. It is ironic that Rick claims he spent years working on Daughter of the Deep. It overall feels like it was yanked out of the oven before it had a chance to bake properly. Then again, he also claims to have gotten the idea for Magnus Chase before he wrote Percy Jackson, and look how that turned out.
The audiobook is narrated by Soneela Nankani. She’s the narrator for the Aru Shah audiobooks. Personally, I wasn’t too thrilled when I saw that Soneela would be narrating. However, she gave a fairly decent performance. She voiced Ester in a rather stereotypical way, like she was imitating Sean from The Good Doctor, but that was the only true sour note. Speaking of music, the audiobook is filled with music. There’s lots of musical cues throughout the audiobook. Scenes of wonder and whimsy have inspirational music, action scenes have exciting music. There’s a scene where Ana plays a pipe organ aboard the Nautilus, and we actually get to hear it. I thought that was a really nice touch.
Now, let’s analyze the cover. This is a nice looking cover. The undersea landscape is bright and vibrant. We see Ana and Gemini in their divining suits. Their faces are clear and unobscured. The Rick Riordan Presents books goes with this approach as well. Something about it being important for minority kids to see themselves clearly represented on book covers. We also see the Nautilus in the background, along with a giant octopus.
So, Daughter of the Deep has a lot of potential, and I certainly wouldn’t mind a sequel. However, there’s a lot of room for improvement. It needed to stand on its own merits, not just be the dry run for the movie script. Still, it's lightyears better than our next port of call. Next time, we’re tackling The Sun and The Star. The claws are coming out, and I’m prepared to fully eviscerate Mark Oshiro’s glorified self-insert fanfic.

FYI, this is a story COLLECTION. Lots of standalones technically. So, you can basically start to read at any chapter, no pre-read of the other chapters needed technically (other than maybe getting better descriptions of characters than: Adam Vir=human, Krill=antlike alien, Sunny=tall alien, Conn=telepathic alien). The numbers are (mostly) only for organization of posts and continuity.

Thanks for reading! As you saw in the title, this is a cross posted story written by starrfallknightrise and I'll just upload some of it here for you guys, if you are interested and want to read ahead, the original story-collection can be found on tumblr or wattpad to read for free. (link above this text under "OC:..." ) It is the Empyrean Iris story collection by starfallknightrise. Also, if you want to know more about the story collection i made an intro post about it, so feel free to check that out to see what other great characters to look forward to! (Link also above this text). I have no affiliations to the author; just thought I’d share some of the great stories you might enjoy a lot!
Obviously, I have Charlie’s permission to post this and for the people already knowing the stories, or starting to read them: If you follow the link and check out the story you will see some differences. I made some small (non-artistic) changes, mainly correcting writing mistakes, pronoun correction and some small additional info here and there of things which were not thought of/forgotten or even were added/changed in later stories (like the “USS->UNSC” prefix of Stabby, Chalar=/->Sunny etc). As well as some "biggemajor" changes in descriptions and info’s for the same stringency/continuity reason. That can be explained by the story collection being, well a story collection at the start with many standalone-stories just starring the same people, but later on it gets more to a stringent storyline with backstories and throwbacks. (For example Adam Vir has some HEAVY scars over his body, following his bones, which were not really talked about up till half the collection, where it says it covers his whole body and you find out via backflash that he had them the whole time and how he got them, they just weren't mentioned before. However, I would think a doctor would at least see these scars before that, especially since he gets analyzed, treated and goes shirtless/in T-shirts in some stories). So TLDR: Writing and some descriptions are slightly changed, with full OK from the author, since he himself did not bother to correct these things before.

2023.06.06 17:04 CTom3264 I fear me (24M) and my girlfriend (24F) have nothing in common, what should I do?

I have been with my girlfriend for about 10 months now, and in less than 2 months I am moving a few states away to start law school and we are planning on doing long distance. However, I have doubts this is actually worth it and I want Reddit's opinion.
Basically, when me and my gf first met, she told me she was pursuing her masters degree in chemistry, was 22 years old at the time, and that her parents were well-educated engineers with degrees from UCLA. After a bit of talking and prior to us beginning our relationship, she revealed to me she lied and was actually still in undergrad completing her fifth year in biology due to some previously failed classes due to depression, she was actually 23 not 22, and she lied because she got scared I wouldn't like her if I knew she was still in undergrad. I chose to accept this response and look past it, but it has led to a lot of issues to where we are now.
Basically, my gf works at a coffee shop and lives paycheck to paycheck while in school. Her parents, who I initially thought were wealthy, are actually not engineers with degrees from UCLA. Her dad is an engineer and her mom works part time, and they claim to have little to no money and live 8 hours away from us. She drives a 2002 Saturn with 250k miles that constantly breaks down and requires her to dump what little savings she has to fix it, and her parents refuse to help her buy a new car, even though they've bought her little brother 2 or 3 cars now. This inevitably results in me having to pay for almost everything, since I work fulltime, and results in never being able to go on trips or do fun stuff because I need to save and focus on law school. It sucks seeing my friends around me get nice gifts and do fun things with their gfs when mine still hasn't finished undergrad and has no money.
Inevitably, she's a huge sweetheart and one of the nicest people I've ever met. She's also really smart and cares about me a lot. However, we have next to nothing in common:
-She is bisexual, which is fine, except she is SUPER into gay culture and the LGBT community and makes me feel alienated. Whenever we go out, there are rarely any other straight guys there, and her gay and female friends don't ever seem interested in talking to me even when I try and I don't relate to them at all. When she talks about "gay" things that I don't understand, she will just tell me I'm "not part of the community and will never get it." I love sports and economics, but she has literally 0 interest in these topics, and doesn't even try to ask me about my favorite teams or other things.
- She has extremely leftist views, i.e. anyone that says they're a woman is a woman, its ok/reasonable for non-white people to hate all white people, etc. I consider myself a leftist but some of her views have logical fallacies or are just wrong in my opinion, but I rarely can talk to her about these feelings because she will just respond that I'm mean or that as a straight white guy I just "don't get it." She also sends me a considerable number of tiktoks that are women telling a story of an awful thing a man did. Like I get it, men do really suck, but I don't like seeing this and thinking about it literally all the time harms my mental health.
- She has awful ADHD and can't plan anything to save her life. I am an extremely rigid, organized type who likes to plan things out, and she tells me I need to be more go with the flow and relaxed. However, she will take like 12 hours to respond to a text message, and will get angry at me for wanting to stay in and just relax together because she took way too long to acknowledge any plans and I'm a more introverted person anyways.
- I don't love her sense of style. This one is pretty minor, but she is super into ironic and stupid shirts, very revealing clothes, and giant goth boots. I sometimes wish she was more into conventional girl clothes as I feel some stuff she wears is not flattering or doesn't look good on her, but she does not care for my opinion on this matter and if I offer it, I'll get the typical response that I'm "mean".
Does anyone see this getting better? Am I being a judgmental asshole who needs to loosen up on her? I'm very scared to pursue long distance if I don't start feeling more comfortable in the relationship than I do now.
