2023.06.06 05:18 Internal_Celery_6720 Answering some GBDA common questions

Hi everyone! I thought I would answer some common questions (or try my best to) regarding being a student at Waterloo and GBDA as a program. Please keep in mind though my opinions and answers could change as I progress through the program as I've only completed my first year so far. Also feel free to leave any extra questions and I'll try (or someone else) will try their best to answer
How are you finding the course so far?
TLDR: Courses aren't too difficult overall, but be sure to manage your time or else they will become difficult.
Long Answer: The required courses aren't that difficult overall especially if you come from a sort of IB/Stem heavy background, however your electives could definitely make or break how enjoyable your semester is. That is to note that it isn't going to be easy to score from the 85-100 range (depending on the course) but as someone who had a 94 average coming into university I was greatly humbled by way lower marks.
Especially for courses such as CS105 or ECON101 they aren't necessarily painfully difficult (you will find yourself stressed about assignments/exams though) but definitely if you find yourself falling behind in the content it will be pretty difficult to catch yourself back up to speed and especially don't try cramming assignments/studying for exams the night before.
An important note for GBDA 101, (idk if its like this for the all the other GBDA courses) they give you exactly 2 weeks for each assignment however they are usually due 8pm the night BEFORE you got Stratford. My advice is to complete it the day before its DUE so you can spend the final day making last minute touches or reviewing to see if you missed any of the criteria. I can't stress how many times I would start the project the day it was due,, and find myself working past the 8pm deadline almost till I had to leave for Stratford at 8am in the morning. Don't be like that me lol. (or do that's your choice)
Important to remember!! Some of the courses can come across as almost "too easy" to some and often times people will underestimate how much time/work is actually required in order to actually perform well in the course this can actually remove motivation to do the work ahead of time and many can find themselves regretting everything (we've all been there) moments before the deadline of an assignment wishing we had started earlier.
Have something to organize your work, make small goals instead of cramming everything - take time to understand content (especially in CS) and if all else fails know a group of people who can help you explain assignments, concepts or just provide overall support.
Is the coop actually good?
Honestly my stream is the first one with coop added to their program (which we do in our third year), before it was just internships so there hasn't been an actual GBDA official coop done yet - however waterlooworks is a great resource to try and help find coop, but with how the tech job market is going these days (in terms of ux/ui) I don't think it's a bad idea to look into trying to find your own reliable companies to do coop with. Just because your program has coop doesn't mean you are guranteed a coop. Remember that in these industry you portfolio is everything, so whether you get a good coop or not depends on your effort and dedication to creating strong connections or a strong portfolio, this really goes for how well you will do in this program overall.
Would u recommend living on res or just renting?
I lived on Village 1 in my first year, going into second year I am renting in waterloo. It's not a bad idea to live on res first year it definitely helps you become more familiar with people in your year and also outside of your program as everybody is looking to find people to meet off the bat of arriving to university. Especially if you live in the LLC - you will become closer to people in the program faster then majority of those on their own, this could be great for creating study circles, and just overall finding friend groups in the program.
However you will soon realize you don't have much privacy/space/sanitation in these residence and dream for your own actual personal space. I think its okay to try it out for first year and then op to renting throughout the rest. However if you have peers who live in the nice condos nearby you will find yourself jealous of their amenities (I can't even lie). The condos are technically cheaper then residence if you try to get them earlier however I don't know what's their pricing coming closer to the date you move in.
Do you also commute to the Stratford campus?
For first years, they provide a shuttlebus that leaves at 8am in the morning on Friday's the one day you need to go to Stratford and they provide shuttle back free of charge. However if you are not a first year you will need to pay 10$ to take the shuttle one way and it arrives at very limited times throughout the day. There are no regular buses you can transit to Stratford campus with, so your best bet is to either get a car or have a friend who can carpool and you pitch for gas money.
How is the social life in the community?
Waterloo gets a bad rep as a socially awkward student body who just studies all day. (which isn't technically wrong) but there are many strong communities to be apart of if you are truly passionate or interested in something ranging from just liking anime/games to business connections, drawing, heritage clubs etc etc there is really everything for anything you could imagine (even a rizz club) but you have the make the effort to be apart of these social circles, it's not going to arrive at your doorstep for you.
I actually spent majority of my first year alone, doing schoolwork or sleeping especially in the winter months my energy to make friends really depleted, but I do find people are pretty open to new friends and friendship can just grow from a small compliment to each other it really up to the person whether they prioritize their social life or their studies.

Hi,
I don't know how I got here, but I basically wasted the whole SWOTVAC because I was relocating out of my house and dealing with lots of family issues lol
I wouldn't say I have not learned anything over the semester, I have been following through the content up until week 6 for one subject, and another up until week 4.
My first exam is on this Thursday and another one on Friday.
Should I be pulling an all-nighter tonight, so tomorrow night (Wednesday) I can have proper sleep before my Thursday exam? Will an all-nighter a day before the exam (not on an actual night before the exam) affect my brain as much?
I thought if I need to do an all-nighter anyway, it's better not to be the night before the exam : (

It is known that plush trap is the plush version of springtrap and I've done some research finding out he is canon. It's confusing to me because it doesn't matter whether we play as Mike or the crying child in fnaf 4, springtrap comes later in the series, WAY later than fnaf 4 especially. It makes me think of how the concept of plushtrap was made by Michael, the crying child, or William if the spring lock failure happened after the events of fnaf 4. Anyways I was wonder what you guys think about this.

2023.06.06 05:15 ZartudatuGaming Older Samsung TV - Trying to figure out Overscan - Options in Service Menu?

I'm using a new (old) TV for my retro gaming (PS1 / Atari / GameCube / Wii) and I'm having a problem with overscan and lack of options to correct it.
I am waiting on my RetroThink but I have done a few tests with Composite, S-Video, HDMI, HDMI via VGA, and Component.

Here are some examples with my 23" Samsung and my older 32" Toshiba (retiring as it is failing) in 4:3.

The text on the Samsung has the 'All rights reserved' cut half way on the bottom. On the Toshiba it is non-existent.
My Samsung has 480p, 480i, 720p support. I also can set 4:3, Wide, Panorama, and Zoom, but Zoom doesn't really work for this as the image needs to be in 4:3.
Then I tried my Atari Flashback and did some tests:

Same kind of issues here. I did a quick test by using HDMI to VGA and it did show more of the picture than just using HDMI. The Samsung doesn't have Dot per Dot mode or 1:1 I don't think.

I heard you can access the Service Menu and possibly make adjustments but I'm not experienced enough with these to even know what to look for, and I'm not sure where to get a service manual online. These are the options though:

I'm hoping I can do something to adjust this. I'm not sure how the RetroThink will handle it since going with HDMI as per my Atari test had some of the picture outside of the visible area. I was only able to get more by using an HDMI to VGA adapter. Worst case I can still do that can just output the audio from the adapter to the TV's Audio IN, or use external speakers.

First off, context.
I'm sure most of you have heard about the upcoming changes to the Reddit API. If not, please take some to read the summary on the link above. Basically, Reddit will impose policy changes that are extremely detrimental to third-party mobile apps in favor of the official Reddit app, which most users find subpar.
How does this affect the sub?
According to this modnews, they will be limiting large-scale applications’ access to NSFW content. So those who are not using Reddit on their browser or the official app may not be able to view or access the sub.
What now?
In solidarity with the Reddit community, this sub will be participating in the protest on June 12. We will be going dark for at least 48 hours.
I know comments on this sub are disabled (the reasons for which are found here), but we will allow discussion in this thread. Provided, of course, that they do not break any of the sub rules.

He wasn’t going to lose anyone again.
At least, that what he told himself.
Candorick sat at his bed, hands planted firmly on his face.
They reminded him too much them.
As he watched Cadia explode, he made a promise to himself.
He was done with caring.
He joined the Imperial Guard because he wanted to protect those he cared about.
All that brought was sadness and depression and betrayal.
He would kill every last one of them.
They took everything from him.
And now he was going to take everything from them.
The heretics used their suffering as an excuse to put suffering on others, and he would not allow that to continue.
But isn’t that what Candorick fought for?
Candorick looked at his hands.
“Am I..?”
Tears streamed down his face.
“No you’re not…” an slow, deep echoey voice said from a small closet hidden in the corner of the room.
“What? Who was that?” Candorick said, wiping away the tears on his face, and then looking at the closet’s door.
“They deserve it…” The echoey voice whispered.
“Whoever that karking is, come out right now!” Candorick said, shouting at the door. He stood up, and began to slowly head towards the closet.
“You must show them… show them all…” the echoey voice whispered.
“They will not trample on you, like they did to your family…” the voice said.
Candorick approached the door.
“Open the door Candorick. Open the door! OPEN THE DOOR!” The voice now screamed, the door began to shake, red light emanating from the cracks in the door frame.
Candorick stared at the door. He had to open it. He had to.
“What are yee doing Templar?” Candorick turned around. Narvast stood there, glaring at Candorick.
“Nothing, priest.” Candorick said, letting go of the door handle.
“I havith been looking for thou all day!” Narvast said. “Yee haven’t been conversing with that freak, have yee?”
“No… No I haven’t.” Candorick replied.
“Good Templar! The freak will only bring wreck and ruin to yee faith! He is an abomination who deserves nothing but hate!” Narvast said, her voice echoing through the halls of the Mourningstar.
“Have yee seen the slab anywhere, Templar?” Narvast asked.
“No… try looking in mission control, maybe he got lost again admiring all the colorful screens…” Candorick knew that was a lie. Bogra was probably still with Keating enjoying his rations. But he just wanted to be alone.
Narvast turned around around and headed out of the bunk-room, towards the center hall.
Candorick looked back to the closet. The door was gone. Candorick examined the room, no door like the one he saw was anywhere in sight.
“What in the karking hel…” It must have been nothing, maybe it was just his head tricking him, maybe someone had stuck something in his rations. It must have been his imagination. Candorick walked back to his bed, scanning the room for any signs of the door.
“How are you doing Candorick?” Candorick turned around. It was Keating. Bogra followed close behind.
“Will you karking just leave me alone Keating! You’re not helping!” Candorick yelled.
“Candorick, we’ve all lost someone important to us.” Keating said.
Bogra sat next to Candorick, his bed creaking and snapping due to Bogra’s massive frame.
Bogra pulled out the large mining helmet he always kept on the side of his pack.
“I spent my years as a baby Ogryn on Morlax… Mortac… Mornax, it was mining planet, yes? Me papa worked in the mines, mining ores for the Emprah’. One day I felt big earthquake, like when big Ogryn step. That night me papa didn’t come home. Papa never came home. He was jolly fellow, always tell funny jokes. Big beard, it pretty gray. He look like he eat lot’s a sweets. Mama give me helmet. Said it belonged to papa. Told me to take it with me for the good luck. I miss mama and papa…”
“But I move on.” Bogra placed the helmet back on the side of his pack. “It what mama and papa would have wanted.”
Keating sat next to Candorick.
“You’re not alone Candorick. Remember that.” Keating threw a small bottle at Candorick. “Catch!”
Candorick caught the bottle. It had no discernible markings on it, and it looked like the cap had been tied on by hand. A green liquid rested inside.
“What’s this?” Candorick asked.
“Little thing my mom taught me to make. Told me it would help me if my nightmares ever got to bad. Thought it might help you.” Keating said.
“So you are asking me to just drink this random liquid you just gave me? You think I’m karking stupid?” Candorick replied, attempting to hand the bottle back to Keating.
“I don’t, that’s why I asked Bogra to come with me. He is watching me give it to you. He promised to tell anyone if that you did this.” Keating said, calling Bogra over. “Tell him what you’ll do if something happens to you.”
Bogra walked over. “I’ll tell the important people the sparkhead’ gave vial of poison to the boss.”
“Nobodies forcing you to take it. It’s just, food for thought.” Keating said as he pushed the vial back into Candorick’s chest.
“How does it work?” Candorick asked.
“Hel if I know.” Keating replied. “From my personal experience, it stops a lot of the ‘creative liberties’ your brain makes when dreaming, meaning your nightmares should be a lot less potent.”
“If you are planning on taking it, do it right before bed, to ensure it doesn’t wear off before you wake up.”
Candorick looked at the vial. Surely it wouldn’t work, how could a drink do that?
But he couldn’t take it anymore. The lack of the sleep, the horrible nightmares, he was willing to do anything to make them stop. Even if it was drink a vial full of suspicious liquid given to him by a witch.
He had better not been lying.
