2023.06.07 13:12 SpecialistNo1435 1/- Naked mole rats and there extreme uniqueness genuinely you might wanna take a peak. I talk about their division of labor, cooperative care, communication, aspects of biology.
(Remember in all this there almost 100% blind)
Part two Now this will be multiple posts as i can’t put out the amount of info i want too in just one What i talk about in each part (only 2 of them) so you can see if your interested in any: Part 2 (I’m using this as -/- the left side is the part and the right side is what i’m referring to the claim)
1/1
Division Of Labor - Roles (Queen, soldiers, workers) - Caste system/Hierarchy - A second caste system in workers
1/2
Cooperative care: - Roles - Babysitting - Training and socialization - Nursing and grooming - Tending to weak.
2/1
Communication: - How they communicate - Each family having there own accents - Tactile signals - Chemical signals
2/2
Aspects of biology: - Having evolved an insanely strong cancer resistance - Living to 30 yrs when rodent sized usually die after 2-4 yrs. - Ability to survive with very low oxygen.
(Whichever number is in the title is the part that post is)
1/1 Division of labor: Queen: Each naked mole rat colony has a single breeding female known as the queen. She is the largest individual in the colony and is responsible for reproduction. The queen is the only female that breeds and gives birth to pups, ensuring the continuation of the colony. The queen also makes the other females reproductive organs stop working with ways like: * Pheromonal inhibition: The queen's pheromones suppress reproductive development and ovulation in subordinate females.
• Social inhibition: The queen's dominant behavior discourages subordinate females from reproducing.
• Behavioral suppression: Subordinate females exhibit non-reproductive behavior, reducing sexual behavior and fertility.
Workers: The majority of naked mole rats in a colony are non-breeding individuals known as workers. These workers are sterile and do not reproduce. They are responsible for maintaining and operating the colony's infrastructure, including tunneling, nest building, foraging, and defense. Workers perform a wide range of tasks and exhibit a division of labor based on their age and size.
Caste system: The naked mole rat colony has a hierarchical caste system, where workers are divided into three distinct groups based on their size and age: small workers, medium workers, and large workers. • Small workers: The smallest and youngest individuals in the colony, typically around one year old. They are responsible for tasks such as digging new tunnels and chambers, gathering food, and cleaning the nest. They have smaller bodies that enable them to navigate through narrow tunnels efficiently.
• Medium workers: As small workers age and grow, they transition into the medium worker stage. Medium workers are responsible for expanding and maintaining the tunnel system, collecting and storing food, and participating in defense activities. They form the bulk of the worker population.
• Large workers: Large workers are the oldest and largest individuals in the colony. They are responsible for tasks that require more strength and endurance, such as defending the colony against intruders, enlarging the tunnel system, and moving heavy objects. Large workers also participate in foraging expeditions to gather food from outside the colony.
Soldiers: In addition to workers, some naked mole rats specialize in defense and are known as soldiers. Soldiers have larger heads, powerful jaws, and prominent incisor teeth, which they use to protect the colony from predators or intruding mole rats from other colonies. Their primary role is to defend the nest and the rest of the colony members.
1/2 Cooperative care:
Queen: The queen, as the sole reproductive female in the colony, plays a central role in cooperative care. She gives birth to the pups and provides them with milk for nourishment. The queen is responsible for nursing and protecting the young, ensuring their well-being during their early stages of development.
Workers: The non-breeding workers in the colony also contribute to cooperative care. While they do not produce offspring, they assist in the care and protection of the queen's pups. • Babysitting: Workers take turns babysitting the young by staying near the nursery chamber where the queen's pups are housed. This helps to ensure constant surveillance, thermoregulation, and protection for the vulnerable offspring.
• Nursing and grooming: Workers may also assist the queen in nursing the pups by providing additional milk. They engage in alloparental care, which involves caring for the offspring of others. Workers may groom and clean the pups, promoting hygiene and social bonding within the colony.
• Training and socialization: As the pups grow older, workers play a role in their socialization and integration into the colony. They teach the young about the complex social structure, behaviors, and tasks necessary for survival. This ensures that the new generations of workers are well-prepared to contribute to the colony's activities.
Soldiers: While soldiers primarily focus on defense, they may also participate in cooperative care. They help protect the nursery chambers and the young from potential threats, such as predators or intruders from other colonies. Soldiers are vigilant in defending the queen and the pups, contributing to their overall safety.

2023.06.07 13:07 MysteriousBreakfast6 Helo me deside on a Lens choice
I will be using the fujifil xt3 I only have a budget of 700€ for lenses. My goal is to have a wide coverage, using fast lenses since I mostly shoot in dim lit ares for events. So I usually use a 23mm, 35mm for mid range groio ohotos and a 50mm for one to two person shots. They have always been f 2.8 lenses. Cant afford to rent those anymore so im looking to get some good starter gesr, both for client work and personal projects. I really enjoy shooting landscapes with telephoto lenses, which is why one of these choices includes that. Here are the lenses on my mind. Plesse suggest if there are better choices
Sigma 18 50mm f 2.8 500€ Along with a Fuji xc 4.5-6.7 for 200€ This is one pair Im considering. The zoom would cover wide group photos as well as closer shots. While also saving me time on changing lenses for each need. The fuji is a purchase that I only intend to use for personnal projects. Its a nice sharp lens for the price and very lightweight. Convenient during hikes which would be its main use.
My other choice is Viltrox 85mm 1.8 stm II 300 € Aling with a Viltrox 13mm 1.4 xf for 400€
What would be the smarter choice here given that I mostly dhoot events, but consider my gigs to be incredibly diverse. Im not specialized. The lenses I mentioned at the start could still be rented out if needed, but its not always an option.
Please help me its tearing me apart. Thank you

2023.06.07 13:00 Confident_Strike3777 Day trips from Praiano?
My fiancé and I will be spending 3 nights/4 days in Praiano in late September as part of our honeymoon. It will be both of our first times visiting. I have been doing quite a bit of research and reading through a lot of posts on this sub, but cannot decide what the best day trip would be. I know that Amalfi and Positano are usually very busy with tourist, but was wondering if they would possibly be less busy at the end of Sept/early Oct?
Further, I am wondering if we should try two different day trips or if that is too much? I have read that while Praiano is very charming, there may not be as much to do. For reference, our main priorities are great food and limited time spent traveling between destination so that we have time to explore each place.
Thank you guys very much if you have any advice!

2023.06.07 12:32 vesnin_sergey How do you think I could capitalize on failures?
| https://preview.redd.it/v1574z1xpk4b1.png?width=767&format=png&auto=webp&s=7254fc952f9ac5a64fe005047ee86af6a11e8f43 Menteora recommends turning failure into profit: Why is it so hard for mature companies to grow? One of the main underlying reasons is the fear of failure. Indeed, according to 31 percent of respondents to a 2015 Boston Consulting Group survey, the biggest obstacle to innovative work is the desire to avoid making mistakes. CEOs know this well. For one thing, they understand that failure can be beneficial. As William McKnight, chairman of 3M, once said, "The brave ones work best and best ... Mistakes are necessary." Pixar president Ed Catmull says, "You don't have to think of mistakes as inevitable evil. Or evil at all. Mistakes are the inevitable consequence of trying to do something new ... and a valuable experience." THE BACKGROUND IDEA Problem. Managers know that work on innovation, without which growth is impossible, comes with failures; mistakes should be tolerated and readily accepted, but most still avoid them at all costs. Solution. Make losses more acceptable by increasing their impact: carefully analyze and document the benefits of failed projects, including knowledge gained about customers, markets, teams, and specific employees, development trends, and the company structure, processes, and culture. Value Added To maximize. On the other hand, budgeting, resource allocation, and risk control are aimed at predictability and good economic results - and top managers are believed to be able to guarantee them. Even knowing that failure is necessary and desirable, people do everything to avoid it. One must learn from failures, measure their utility, and gain as much benefit from them as possible. In calculating the utility, or profitability, of failure, the denominator should be the resources spent on it. Profitability will be higher if you reduce the denominator by reducing investment. Or gradually invest the money in installments as the major unknowns become clearer. In the numerator are the "assets" of the experience gained: information about customers and markets, the company, its team, and business processes. Increasing these "assets" can also increase the utility of failure. Having studied group and organizational dynamics for more than a decade and having worked with more than 50 companies from various industries, we have found that increasing the profitability of failure depends on the team's mood and not only by increasing the numerator but also by decreasing the denominator. Some failures quickly provide market insights that bode well for the company's meaningful competitive advantage. Others give lessons of a more abstract nature, valid for the professional development of employees and the organization as a whole. Three rules should be followed for the profitability of mistakes to grow. First, you can go ahead and study each failed project and get the most instructive things out of it. Then they generalize their findings and explain them to the whole organization. Finally - based on a detailed analysis prove that the company tolerates mistakes and thus contributes to their highest cost-effectiveness. Rule #1. Learn from every mistake. First, you have to teach people to think about every failed project. This is not easy: dealing with past mistakes is tricky and unpleasant. Many people would instead look only into the future than look back. Any failure in plans is an opportunity to test and adjust initial assumptions. Our advice is to write down everything you learned from the project in these categories: customer and market dynamics; organizational strategy, culture, and processes; yourself and your team; and future trends. All of these "assets" will go into the numerator. It would be best to list all the costs: money and time spent on the project, moral damage, reputational damage, and internal indirect expenses - say, the distraction of management from other tasks. Here, for example, is how this method was applied in a British daily newspaper. A few years ago, the publisher's CEO asked a young, capable editor and marketing and design experts to develop a new small-format newspaper layout and test it on readers. The experiment led to two important discoveries. First, no matter what people said in the surveys, they preferred traditional broadband newspapers - or their digital counterparts. Second, a small assembled team was needed to develop new formats. But the main lesson was the "human" lesson. The young editor in charge of the project decided he was failing the assignment and left the company. The CEO could only put it in the fraction denominator, but he understood why the strong employee left, so he also increased the numerator. "The editor," says the general manager, "thought he was piloting a new publication, and if it didn't make a splash, it would be a failure. For me, it was just an experiment-it was to test my hypothesis. I now realize that I did not explain what I expected of him well. The publishing house manager took the blame for the employee's departure. Now, he tries to speak more openly to his subordinates and encourages a willingness to experiment in the team. The second example is a "major-league" consulting firm from which a less prestigious competitor snatched a tidbit of a state contract. It was a powerful, unforeseen blow. But the long reflection and discussion benefited everyone involved in the tender. It became clear that the criteria for selecting the contractor differed from those believed in the firm, that the competitor understood better what the customer wanted and interacted closely with government officials when placing the bid. Other discoveries were made in the course of the discussion. The firm needed to understand the criteria because it was sure of winning and was guessing more than trying to determine the customer's requirements. Believing that the firm's high-profile name spoke for itself, the bid team didn't call the best consultants to help. "Let's be honest: We took the project far less seriously than the competition - and we lost," said one of the firm's executives. In other words, the main benefit of the failure was the realization that the firm should treat orders differently. If people can discuss projects this way, the discussion yields impressive results. Employees discuss what happened and draw conclusions; they understand how mistakes can help them in the future and what important insights the experience of failed promises. CALCULATE THE PROFITABILITY OF FAILURE Even a failed project can benefit an organization if it is carefully studied and important lessons learned. To get a complete picture of the benefits and losses of a failed project, please answer a few questions. Assets - What have we learned about your customers' and markets' needs and preferences? Should the company change its thinking about them?
- What have we learned about future trends? How can we adjust our projections?
- What have we learned about how we work as a team? Are our internal processes, structures, and culture effective?
- What new skills have we learned - individually and as a team? Did the project help build trust and improve the atmosphere in the group? Did it reveal any development needs?
Passives. - What direct losses - material, labor, production - did the project lead to?
- Are there any moral damages? Was there a blow to the company's reputation and competitiveness in the market or the eyes of customers?
- What are the internal costs? Has the failure undermined team morale? Did other projects suffer because all eyes were on the failed project? Were there other unintended consequences?
- Bottom line

2023.06.07 12:03 SubtleSubversive Truman delusion + erotomania, anyone else? Help supporting bf.
Hi peeps, If anyone don't mind reading, need some help with boyfriend's delusions, I love him deeply and things are great between us, but life itself is rough. He got diagnosed 10y ago and I knew he had some paranoia-related issues when we got together 2y ago (my mental health ain't great either) although he told me the details a year later.
He says there's this girl who liked him when they were kids, but he kept pushing away as he didn't like her. In high school he saw her again and realized she's always been watching him, reading his mind, and judging him, along with a group of his closest friends, as a revenge for rejecting her.
It started suddenly, as he moved from a school to another. It was actually the first time seeing her but delusions convinced him they met before with these false memories, also felt like everyone in the new school knew and hated him already because of thoughts broadcasting. He thinks the cause was too much weed, his mum suspects sexual abuse might be involved. Likely had issues with rejection as he was a mistake child and his father always made it clear that he only cared for his 'wanted' brother, parents divorced when he was 4 and moved on the other side of the country with mum.
Anyway, he thinks she comes from a rich family who made a reality show where he's the main subject: he has to find her, but she will show herself only if he loves her and is worthy (he looks in every room multiple times a day). If he wins she's gonna stop watching him and broadcasting his life, and he's gonna get plenty of money.
He's been checking her Instagram daily for 10y, because he hates that she knows everything about him while knowing nothing about her (they were just in the same school for 2 months then he dropped out, never talked, dont even know if she knows he exists) but she recently made it private. He hears lines in tv and music that tell him to go on looking for her, voices of his old friends offending and saying he made a big mistake rejecting her, that he should've just accepted her instead so he'd have money to help his family. He talks back offending them, her, and himself.
Sometimes he can recognize what isn't real even if it feels real, and tells me I shouldn't worry or pay attention to it, as it's just the ramblings of a crazy man. At worse times he thinks his family and I are reading his mind and are also part of the show, actors paid to spend time with him because no one would be able to cope with him otherwise.
He attempted suicide multiple times but not in the last years, atm not being always sincere with psychiatrist as he's afraid of going to the psych ward again. Taking clozapine and doesn't want to change again. Can't find a job and doesn't want to apply for disability, so feeling even more like a failure atm. I talked him into being more sincere and starting psychotherapy, and hopefully that will happen after the summer.
I've rambled a lot, and even if we're anonymous and all I might delete this later as it's someone else's delusions, I just wanted to see if anyone who had similar experiences can give me some insight perhaps? (yeah I know it's an odd word to use in these cases) I want to support him the best way I can while keeping my already precarious sanity.
TL;DR. Want to support bf with 10y of schizophrenia, Truman Show-ish with possibile erotomania. Need tips, similar experiences, opinions, hope, or anything you have to navigate this and stay sane.
Thanks 🖤

2023.06.07 11:57 NESMM Do I ask for a raise?
I started working at Safeway in 2016, starting out with a pay of $11.50 ($2 above Washington states minimum wage in 2016). I worked at the same store for 4 years then transferred to another store for college but would temporarily transfer back during winter break. From 2016 to 2020 my pay went from $11.50 to $16 (increasing due to Washington raising minimum wage each year). The one time I asked for a raise was at the end of 2019 when a new hire was making $1 more than me with no produce experience (he was making $13.50 I was making $12.30). Since then I never asked for a raise as I believed I was being paid a fair wage.
When I transferred to my new store I didn’t transfer into produce as they had enough employees. I got moved to DUG since it was new and they needed workers. I would take some produce shifts if someone called out but I mainly worked in DUG from the end of 2019 to 2021. When I transferred to that store I was making $16 (a bit over minimum wage).
I finally left the company after being burnt out from riding the bus for an hour everyday in December 2021. I got hired at whole foods in February of 2022, expecting to make at least $18 or even $17, they hired me in produce for $16. I would work for a few months until December of that year after they wouldn’t let me go back home for winter break, like I always do, because it was during a “blackout week”.
I would finally return to Safeway at the start of this year after not being able to find work. I tried getting a produce position since its what I have been doing since 2018 but no positions were available so I got hired as a checker. I asked if I could make more than $16 but they said $16 was what they start checkers at and I didn’t have any experience in that position. I was reluctant since rent increased but I went with it. I soon found out a new hire who has worked for Safeway for 3 months in the same position was making $18. I understand that they had 3 months more experience as a checker than I do but they said they started at $18.
During my years with the company I helped out in numerous departments with their work (liquor, bakery, deli and sco) while also helping my produce manager with orders, signs and trainings. I used to make $1-2 above minimum wage but now I only make a few cents above it which doesn’t feel too fair to me.
I’m transferring to my original store in a few weeks, do I bring up getting a raise or even a managerial position to the store leads?
Sorry for long post.

2023.06.07 11:46 yaeltheunicorn Reached my GW, bought new clothes then found out I was pregnant.
Not really a rant because I'm really happy overall, but couldn't find anything more appropriate.
35F, 162cm (around 5'3).
I did IF and CICO since February and slowly but surely went from 65kg (141lbs) to my goal weight of 56kg (123lbs) with 4 cardio (tennis and zumba mainly) and 1 full body weight trainings a week. I recently found out that I'm expecting again (hurray!) so I guess it means I'm taking a year-long hiatus only to start again once I gave birth and recovered sufficiently. I'm still planning to continue with appropriate exercise and healthy eating but worry that I won't be able to stay on track without the framework of IF/calorie deficit.
I'm disheartened a little because I just got the hang of 16:8/18:6 and even did a few 24 hour fasts here and there. I finally like that I'm in shape and look and feel great and I'm really anxious about losing this body I worked so hard to get back after my last one was born 18 months ago. Obviously a healthy pregnancy is more important right now, but I can't help feeling this way.
I'm dreading the weight gain that will inevitably happen and I feel guilty that I actually eat as much as I need to not be in deficit, so I might talk to someone about that. I've had a history of eating disorders all my life but IF really helped me with developing a healthier relationship with food and weight loss so really hope I can pick up where I left off once I'm ready again. Thanks if you read it this far!

2023.06.07 11:26 Proastandtoast Van Life Chronicles: Exploring Iceland for Three Weeks
This sub has been an incredible source of information and inspiration, so I gave myself an hour to write down and share some insights from the recent three-week road trip I’ve had with my partner.
General remarks: - Our main goal was to enjoy nature, so we were okay with spending absolutely no time on the golden circle or in Reykjavik. Due to the weather, we ended up doing both anyway; but these would be the parts of the trip I would skip first. Coming from continental Europe, we had almost no jetlag and could safely start directly with our journey. With more jet lag, some more time to adapt is definitely a good idea.
- We rented a 2WD campervan from Star Car Rental and spent all but the final night on campsites. Our experience with Star Car was very good. The price was competitive and included unlimited mileage, additional driver and all necessary utensils (chairs, table, cooking stuff). We got picked up from the airport and were ready to go within 15’. When giving back the car, we got driven to our hotel without any inspection (we did have zero excess insurance).
- Mid-May to beginning of June was a very nice time to travel. The days are long (I’ve seen no darkness), almost all camping places are open, but the crowds at the highlights are small – except for the big boys in the south.
- We started our days quite early and therefore typically arrived during the afternoon at the campsites. The kitchen area, showers and laundry spaces were often free to use. Be prepared to go to campsites that have only 2 stoves and 1 shower. During prime time, expect some waiting times.
- We picked up around 100 € worth of cash – two campsites were cash-only, everything else was absolutely card-first / cash-free.
Useful ressources: - Vedur and Safetravel: This sub is absolutely right. Learn how to read and anticipate the weather before you get there. We were there during two yellow warnings and these things are really no joke. It helps to have plenty of time to spontaneously adapt the schedule. And we’ve seen it all: blizzard in the West, hail up North, storm in the East and sun in the South.
- Google reviews & park4night: These were pretty accurate for the campsites. 4+ stars are no-brainers, 3+ depend on your needs (kitchen, shower, electricity) and less than 3 should be avoided. Also, remember to rate them yourself during/after your trip to increase the statistical significance ;)
- Google Maps/MyMaps: MyMaps was useful during our planning to fill with random highlights (waterfalls, hotpots, hikes, campsites) and to set up a rough itinerary. Google Maps is accurate on paved roads. On gravel roads, expect some significant delays. Maps calculates with 80 km/h, while you will probably never exceed 50 km/h. In the Westfjords, we guess-timated our times with 2 minutes per kilometer on the gravel roads. The
Happy Campers Campsite Map as well as the
Hot Pot Iceland Map were nice to have in the back-pocket to check with some time to spare whether something is close by.
- Polarsteps: This was a cute little App, which we used to keep family and friends informed. You can add pictures and some text to your highlights. This way, you don’t send the same picture into various chats and there is a location- and time-dependent context.
Cost: This is the per-person cost breakdown for our 21-day trip (20-day camper rental, 1 hotel stay, total 3’500€).
- Rental (zero excess insurance, additional driver): 1’135 €
- Flight (from continental Europe): 700 €
- Activities (Pools, Spas, Horse-riding, Kayak): 300 €
- Camping (pretty consistent 2’000 +- 500 ISK p.P.): 275 €
- Groceries (Bonus, Kronan, Netto): 255 €
- Coffee, Beers, Food in Restaurants: 260 €
- Petrol (420 € in total for roughly 3’600 km): 210 €
- Souvenirs: 180 €
- Ferries (into Westfjords and to Westman Islands): 95 €
- Hotel: 75 €
Highlights: - Sundlaug and Spas: When camping in small towns, very often there will be a swimming pool close by. They are not expensive (around 1000 ISK pP) and a great way to relax after a long day. Also, it feels nice to take longer, hot showers without knowing people are waiting in line. We decided to go for some smaller premium spas and were very happy with all of them: Krauma was one of our first stops, the Forest Lagoon was incredible during evening hours and GeoSea was also fantastic. Re: nudity. It takes a bit to get used to, but its very refreshing to see this very open approach to nudity in the pools. No one cares, no one watches – just do your thing. It’s cool to see groups of friends at all age groups be so open about it. Certainly very different compared to continental Europe.
- As we had to skip the Eastfjords a bit due to storm, we had some time left at the end. We spent the last 3 nights on the
Westman Islands. It was great to leave the car for a longer while and do everything by foot. There are plenty of things to do and the swimming pool is fantastic.
- Mulagljufur: Use Google Maps to find the exact location, as of now, there is no sign along the road. The canyon is very beautiful and we ended up hiking for almost three hours. Couldn’t get enough of the views.
- Glymur: The infamous log wasn’t placed when we were there, but the short hike to the cave and towards the canyon was absolutely worth it.
- Camping highlights: Melanes campsite at Raudasandur beach (Westfjords): incredible scenery, wild drive to get there; Thingeyri campsite (Westfjords): directly at the fjord, fantastic infrastructure (probably the best kitchen we’ve had) and IMHO a great alternative to the Tungudalur campsite in Isafjordur; 66.12 N campsite (near Husavik): insane ocean view, good infrastructure, one of the best sites along the diamond circle; Glamping&Camping (Westmann Islands): beautiful setting, good infrastructure.
Itinerary (Highlights: *, ** or ***)
Day 1: Arrival at KEF during the afternoon in pouring rain, set up campervan, first grocery stops at Bonus and Kronan, Dinner at Issi’s Fish&Chips*, Camp at Hjalli Kjos
Day 2: Glymur hike** (up to river, no log), Krauma Spa**, scenic drive into Snaefellsnes, Camp at Freezer Hostel
Day 3: Check out Snaefellsnes highlights, get to Stykkisholmur in the afternoon, Ferry Baldur to Brjanslaekur, Hellulaug hotpot*, drive to Melanes campsite*** on Raudasandur beach
Day 4: full day at Raudasandur, great hikes, another night at Melanes campsite.
Day 5: Long drive through westfjords. Highlights included the self-service fish station in Talknafjordur (amazing fisk bollur**), Dynjandi waterfall and Sandfell hike. Camping at Thingeyri*, relax in local swimming pool
Day 6: drive to Isafjordur, check out city (kind of underwhelming, but it was a national holiday; the brewery is nice), do some small hikes in the area. Camp at Tungudalur.
Day 7: very long drive out of westfjords towards Varmahlid. Hot dog stop in Holmavik and arrive at Lambeyri campsite (cash only)
Day 8: woke up with dead battery, but got jump start by campsite owner. Horseriding tour at Lytingsstadir* was very nice, drive to Akureyri, visit Forest Lagoon**. It was Saturday night when we visited, upon leaving we had police checking every driver for alcohol – so better hold off the pool-side bar ;) wanted to camp at Vaglaskogur but campsite wasn’t open. Went up until the CJA campsite in Laugar with a late-night stop at Godafoss (around 10pm, were the only people there)
Day 9: check out Myvatn area: Dimmuborgir hike, Hverir, Leirhnjukur hike**. Then continue to Dettifoss and camp at Asbyrgi. Late night hike to Asbyrgi ‘island’*.
Day 10: Hike in Asbyrgi canyon, continue to Husavik, visit GeoSea**, camp at 66.12N***
Day 11: long drive with very strong winds. We had to go back to Akureyri (optician to fix broken glasses), so went through Myvatn again with a quick stop at Grjotagja. Beautiful drive, weather was too bad for Studlagil canyon, so we continued all the way to Borgarfjordur eystri. Crazy winds during the night and we were happy that our car didn’t get blown away.
Day 12: unfortunately, no hikes in this beautiful area. Waited for storm to pass until lunchtime, visited harbor with puffins**, drive to Egilsstadir (hot dog stop), continue to Seydisfjordur (kind of underwhelming town, the drive is gorgeous though) and, due to weather forecast, continue all the way to Djupivogur campsite.
Day 13: Incredible drive from Djupivogur to Höfn, stops at Hvalnes and Jökulsarlon. Hike at Mulagljufur***, camp at Svenifell.
Day 14: early-morning hike in Skaftafell**, continue to Kirjubaersklausur for campsite. Had to skip Fjardrargljufur due to weather, visited local swimming pool.
Day 15: yellow warning again. Continued to Vik for Skool Beans Coffee*, quick stop at Reynisfjara beach (red alert was on, so we didn’t go further than the sign), continue to Skogarfoss and hike part of Fimmvorduhals*, camp in Selfoss – swimming pool was closed unfortunately.
Day 16: Weather forecast was very bad, so we spent the day in Reykjavik. Walked around town, grabbed some coffees and visiting the local Sundhöll*. Camp at Mosskogar** (cash-only)
Day 17: Golden circle: hike at Thingvellir, look at Geysir, skipped Delfoss. Camp in Selfoss again.
Day 18: quick stop at Seljalandsfoss, ferry to Westman islands. Set up camp at Glamping&Camping** for the next 3 nights. Visited Brothers Brewery*.
Day 19: Kayak tour with Kayak-and-Puffins-company***. Visited local swimming pool* (trampoline slide was very nice) and watched a local handball game.
Day 20: Hike along volcanoes and coast**, visit brewery again, go to puffin bay**
Day 21: Ferry back to mainland. Drive back towards KEF. Drop-off campervan and spent night in Konvin Hotel. Early morning shuttle to airport (we arrived about 2h early for our 7 am flight and had plenty of time).
Of course, I’m very happy to answer any questions you might have!
Hope this is helpful to some of you :)

If you would like to be kept up to date with the upcoming lists, please subscribe to my newsletter by clicking this link. I don’t send out letters too often, pretty much once a month when this list goes out… and occasionally if I release a book or something. As always, this is not a comprehensive list, but only includes all the books I have heard about so far. If you have a fantasy novel you are self publishing in June or beyond, let me know by filling out THIS FORM, and I shall add it to the page. There are but 3 requirements: 1) It must be a self published fantasy novel. 2) It must have a Goodreads page. 3) It must have a cover. -- 1st June – The Pyres of Vengeance (Swords of Dominion #2) by N.C. Koussis Epic Fantasy, Grimdark After losing everything she knew, Selene struggles to keep hope alive. Terrifying threats from the capital test her in ways she never thought possible. Richter can’t destroy himself or the corruption that lives in his body. He won’t let anything stop him from his mission, though – to kill every other werewolf on the Continent. The Order of the Golden Sword cares not for the laws of men. They’ll do anything to wipe the lycanthrope haven of Palerme from existence. But no one has ever faced an army of werewolves before. Goodreads -- 1st June – Tristan’s Regret (The Return of King Arthur #3) by Jacob Sannox Urban Fantasy, Sword & Sorcery, Historical Fantasy In the 5th century, Tristan and Isolde are at the mercy of the scheming Morgana Le Fay, who seeks to undermine King Arthur’s alliance with Cornwall. The consequences of their actions echo down the centuries and, in 2021, Arthur, Tristan and the Knights of the Round Table desperately hunt the last remaining followers of Malagant, an immortal ally of the dead sorceress. Will Arthur finally live up to his own legend, and can anything put an end to Tristan’s regret? Goodreads -- 1st June – The Exile of Zanzibar (Railroad to Zanzibar #1) by Daniel Maidman Epic Fantasy, Historical Fantasy Claire built a device to fold space and time. It had a flaw… When the smoke clears, she finds herself halfway across the world, thousands of years in the past, and no device in sight. In bronze-age Florence, war has lasted for generations. All Claire wants to do is get home, but she’ll need help from the locals. She wins an ally in Marcus Diophantus, a pickpocket turned soldier turned general, who hopes to turn into something more than just her champion. Together, they broker peace between Florence and its enemy. If Marcus is going to help Claire, he’ll have to survive. Peace has upset the balance of power in the capital city. The king stands increasingly alone against: the Constantines, a commercial enterprise as much as a clan, who aim to profit from peace as they have from war – the warrior nobles, descended from the founders of Florence and quick to turn against a weak throne – and Reburrus, the high priest of Florence, convinced Claire answers to hostile foreign gods. As the city comes to a boil, Claire and Marcus – and Marcus’s formidable army – will have to decide where their allegiance lies. Claire becomes a reluctant participant in a savage campaign. While Marcus leads the battles, she tries to gain control of the unimaginably powerful Ctesiphôn – a ghost tower in the heart of Florence, shrouded in magic and myth. Goodreads -- 1st June – Captain (All that Glitters #2) by Shalaena Medford Grimdark, Gaslamp Mere weeks have passed since Tsingsei “Song” Gould’s world fell into ashes. Now she must accept her role as captain of the Stars’ Bounty. The crew returns to the skies to do what they do best: piracy. They travel the world, visiting new countries and finding an adventure wherever they go. In the frigid south, Song finds there are answers to her questions about kijæm…with a caveat. In the trading country, she gains confidence in her notoriety. In the exotic west, she makes a terrible mistake. However, one of Song’s dearest friends has become a wanted man, and they must find a way to free him of the price on his head. Will she commit the highest crime in the world, or will she lose him to the gallows? Goodreads -- 1st June – Buzzard’s Bowl (Tragedy of Cedain #2) by John Palladino Epic Fantasy, Grimdark Cedain continues to collapse. Ashmount’s destruction shatters the Magicai while the culprits responsible continue sabotaging the world. All the while, the next season of Buzzard’s Bowl begins and Edelbrock, in his constant fight for survival, desires a vengeance he can only find in the arena. Seradal and Villic find themselves in the middle of a war between Remeria and the Camel Clans, and may end up on opposing sides, while the threat of Calrym looms over all of them. At the behest of the woman he loves, Demri finds himself thrown into the Elkavich, a not-so-secret order of Magicai who are intent upon fixing the world. Ashen, a former urchin rescued by a noble with selfish aspirations, works to dismantle the nobility of Calrym. Death is assured to all who walk the world, the only unknown is when they will perish. Goodreads -- 1st June – On Winds of Ruin (The Deimachy #2) by Lincoln Law A friendship betrayed. An unfamiliar land. The winds of ruin blow. Roisin is still reeling from events at the end of A Crown of Blood. She feels lost, broken and alone in the world. Torn with what to do next, Roisin chooses to make the fateful trip across the Skybinder border into enemy territory in the hopes of gaining new allies for the fight against the Soulmongers. At her side is her fox companion, Vulpo; the last of the Bloodsingers, Mei; and a Skybinder of questionable allegiance named Giack. However, Roisin’s actions draw the attention of the Skybinder nobility, entrapping her into political machinations with deadly outcomes. Piritta, newly reborn Soulmonger, is tasked with the search for the final member of the Soulmonger Triumvirate to lead the army to victory. And Kaori, leader of the Soulmongers, is given her own task, granting her more power than she could have ever imagined. The choices these young women must make will tear them apart, fracture them all, leaving cracks for something darker to seep in. And in the end, only the one with the strongest resolve will endure. Goodreads -- 1st June – The Nameless Restaurant by Tao Wong Urban Fantasy, Cozy Fantasy There is a restaurant in Toronto. Its entrance is announced only by a simple, unadorned wooden door, varnished to a beautiful shine but without paint, hidden beside dumpsters and a fire escape. There is no sign, no indication of what lies behind the door. If you do manage to find the restaurant, the décor is dated and worn. Homey, if one were to be generous. The service is atrocious, the proprietor a grouch. The regulars are silent, brooding, and unfriendly to newcomers. There is no set menu, alternating with the whim and whimsy of the owner. The selection of wine and beer is sparse or non-existent at times, and the prices for everything outrageous. There is a restaurant in Toronto that is magically hidden, whose service is horrible, but whose food is divine. This is the story of the Nameless Restaurant. Goodreads -- 4th June – Gold, Lock and Key (Grimdark Fairytales #1) by E.J. Doble Grimdark “All it needs, is a bit of tenacity… and three little bears.” Goldie, an outlaw and contract hunter of the Baron’s State, accepts a new assignment from her employer to find an old cabin in the woods, home to three ‘shapeshifters’ who can morph into bears. Considered to be little more than a myth, Goldie assumes at first that the shapeshifters are an exaggeration – but with the sizeable bounty her employer is offering, she soon realises there may be more truth in it than she realised. And that isn’t the only thing on her mind: she discovers her main rival – a manipulative and incredibly cunning trapper named Southey – has also taken on the contract, and will be contending for the same bounty she so fervently desires. Having waited many long years to have her revenge and outsmart Southey for past mistakes, Goldie sees the new contract as a perfect opportunity to do so. All she has to do is play her cards just right. And kill three bears… Goodreads -- 4th June – Waybound (Cradle #12) by Will Wight Progression/Cultivation, Epic Fantasy Years ago, Lindon left his home as a powerless Unsouled. Now, he goes to war with the most powerful beings in the world over the future of Cradle itself. The Weeping Dragon has a grudge to settle, and Lindon intends to take out the Dreadgod with his friends by his side. But rival Monarchs know his plans, and they won’t let things end so easily. If Lindon does win, he will ascend to the heavens. But he may not find a safe haven there either. In the worlds above, Suriel and Ozriel face off against the Mad King to determine the new shape of the cosmos. The victor will decide the fate of countless universes. Whether he wins or dies, Lindon will soon leave this life behind. Goodreads -- 6th June – Champions of Light (The Light Series #1) by Althea Damgaard Epic Fantasy Rhoanda runs away when her father betrays her trust by arranging her marriage without telling her. She had freedom to be herself, unlike her sisters, but in the end, she should have expected this. Winter still hangs on in the mountains, unlike the beach she left, and it could be another month until the pass to the west opens. Her funds run out and the city guard catches her stealing. Instead of a cell, they take her to the Cathedral of Light, which rivals a fortress. There she learns the truth about the Light while trying to hide who she really is. Her parents, who embrace the Dark, have the power to take over the mountain kingdom and could use her as the excuse to do so. Sergeant Vern can’t shake his desire to drink nor his anger at the Lord of Light for the disease that crippled and killed his sister at a young age. The cathedral lets him work with the class of deviants under his alias, but time is running out. The worse spring thaw of the century arrives and despite the great Cathedral of Light, the Dark has found a deep root in the kingdom. Worse, prophecies of the spiritual war manifesting in the physical come true as a mural changes before their eyes and its images step into their lives. Vern needs to accept the truth that sets him free of the curse cast upon his family so he can step into his true role. A truth that his sister professed about the Light through all her pain unto her last breath when angels took her home. Will their faith in the Light be enough to overcome their trials and save a kingdom? Goodreads -- 6th June – imPerfect Curse (The imPerfect Cathar #2) by C.N. Rowan Urban Fantasy I’m exhausted. Done in. Needing a stiff drink and about a week’s sleep. But that’s not going to happen. Because Franc is dying, struck by a curse placed on him by the Sistren Of Bordeaux, one of the most powerful groups of Talented in France. And because of our deal, it’s on me to find out what the hell is going on, and how Franc has offended the Sistren. Apart from by simply existing, of course. Except a simple trip to Bordeaux turns into a living nightmare as the past comes back to not just haunt me but to kick me square in the nuts, and I’m sent to the one place no Talented ever wants to go. Either help overthrow Revance to do the smelter’s bidding or reveal his father’s legacy as the very thing Ryza now fights against. The former is unthinkable. The latter means death. Goodreads -- 21st June – Hierachy of the Unseen by B. Pigeon & Fell A. Marsh Epic Fantasy Demons and humans are locked in endless struggle. This is an intrinsic fact of nature. The demons believe their salvation lies in bleeding humanity of the life-force called light, while the humans are equally determined to defend it. Within the sprawling empire of Lu-nevet, the two sides have settled into an uneasy peace, employing less violent tactics. But this peace can only hold for so long. The state religion of Lukeira sends devout demon hunter Mitzli deep into the borderlands to bless the victims of demonic pranks. Once they arrive, however, they find unexpected signs of violence. They team up with irreligious hunter Veleiry to investigate—and the destruction the two uncover is an ominous sign of what’s to come. Meanwhile, shiftless demon Kor falls under the scrutiny of his vampiric commander, Mant—meaning he must actually do the work of tormenting humans, rather than taking credit from his now-ex-partner Yez. Slowly, he begins to realize that the demons’ strategy is shifting, and may be heading down a path he cannot follow. Mitzli and Kor will have to betray their respective factions if they want to put an end to the violence before it escalates. Alaris discovers what the emperor is looking for — a dragon! But warning a senile dragon against impending danger is no easy task. 2023.06.07 11:08 aFailG Kneejerk United: End of season review & Survey results
| Hi there Kneejerkers, last week we asked for your feedback on our season, specifically focusing on our move to the KneejerkUnited subreddit in March this year. The results have been collected and I can now share it all with you, going over the highs & lows, and what the plans are for next year. This post is quite long so a summary is written at the bottom, with a second short survey for those who are happy to give us their feedback. Thank you in advance! ----- Part 1: Season overview We unfortunately had our worst ever final position since KJU was founded 5 years ago, finishing with an overall rank of 845,195. We had a dreadful start to the season, only entering the top 2 million after wildcarding in GW9, and only entered the top 1 million after our 2nd wildcard in GW27. At our peak we were ranked 427,644 in GW31, but an uninspiring final few weeks saw us fall back down at the end. Fortunately we still finished in the top 1m players, but it's certainly not a season to remember fondly. The first graph below has extra markings for important points in our season: - Green: GW9 wildcard
- Yellow: GW17 world cup
- Red: GW20 triple captain
- Pink: GW27 wildcard
- Grey: GW28 move to the new subreddit
- Blue: GW29 bench boost
- Orange: GW32 free hit

Shortly after the move we were doing well, but then it started going wrong again, and with only 10 gameweeks worth of data, there's not a huge sample to go from anyway. All we can say in that regard for now is that, we will be staying in our new home next season, and hopefully now that more people are aware of the subreddit and how it works, we will see better results next year. ----- Part 2: Survey results & analysis Firstly we would like to thank everyone who took their time to fill in the survey and give us their feedback on the positive and negative aspects to KJU. We want this subreddit and the team to be as good as possible and are always welcome to ideas and criticisms! We are happy to report that 86% of you have enjoyed being a part of the new subreddit. 97% of respondents to the survey were subscribed to it, and 69% of you have the notifications turned on. Analysing these numbers a bit further we can see that, of the 14% of people who didn't enjoy the move to our own subreddit, 20% hadn't subscribed to it, and 60% didn't turn on notifications. Doing these things would make you feel more connected to the process and the team, and I would highly recommend to everyone that wants to be a part of KJU to do these things. https://preview.redd.it/ngzsu6pqje4b1.jpg?width=1510&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3748acf8a916dbdc7457586da15b75dc243aa52e We then wanted to know how the new notification system was going. Before moving to KneejerkUnited, there were 7 notification groups and we would send a link in the groups to notify when new posts came out. One advantage of the new subreddit though, is the freedom and automation it provides to us. Turning on notifications should notify people when new posts are published, cutting out some of our work. Fortunately we can say that 67% of you found the new system to be either easy or very easy, 22% found it to be partly working, with 11% saying that being notified of new posts was difficult. Looking at the numbers closer showed us however, that all the people who had difficulties being notified of new posts hadn't subscribed to receive notifications for new posts, and only 25% of people who found the notifications to be 'so-so' had notifications turned on. The clear solution to this therefore seems to be to subscribe to the subreddit and turn on notifications: 92% of people who had subscribed with notifications on found the system to be working well. To the 8% of people with notifications turned on who only find the system to be 'so-so', I unfortunately don't know what to tell you. The system works for me and most others, so maybe there are further settings with your reddit account that are preventing the notifications from coming through? We have had a few questions asking how to turn notifications on, so here are some guides to help out: https://preview.redd.it/iyqmzq3wxe4b1.jpg?width=1247&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5e94e6afc10bfaa5a522687a890daa283e521f5 Next, we wanted to know your opinion regarding the captain and bench posts. A whopping 92% of you were happy with the format (despite multiple comments elsewhere asking for changes to the system - I'll address that a bit later). The 8% who said here that they didn't like the new captain system were also unhappy with the new subreddit as a whole and didn't leave specific feedback on how to improve the captain polls in the future. We have always seen fewer people voting on the bench polls compared to the captain polls, both before switching to KneejerkUnited and after, and wanted to know if there was something specific we could change here. 29% of you voted for the suggestion that we would write the players in the comments and the 4 most upvoted players would be on the bench for that week, and 9% of you voted for other suggestions - which were essentially to have a separate bench thread. Surprisingly however, 62% of people wanted to keep going with the same system for the bench polls, so we won't change anything to this regard for now, but we will continue to bear this issue and the potential solutions in mind. https://preview.redd.it/4pu1x4nxne4b1.jpg?width=998&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98271b5d794530e2a985a80e2c58454df6a44ce3 Alongside these yes/no questions, we asked some open-ended questions and allow you to write your thoughts freely and let us know any specific feedback you might have. Starting with the positives, it is clear that the main benefit you saw of the subreddit was the ease in finding KJU posts and being able to filter out other fpl related content. There were a lot less comments and engagement in general, which was to be expected after only just starting in a new location, and this was seen as a positive in the sense of less trolls are commenting now, since only those who are interested in the team will see the posts. The other main benefit was that there is more freedom to discuss general team ideas outside of the strict transfer & captain/bench posts and that there is more flexibility to how the team was managed. As 'managers' for the team, we also strongly agree with this point and it is one of the main reasons the subreddit is being used, so we are happy to see this being recognised by your comments. We also asked what aspects of the subreddit you would like to keep the same for next year, and there weren't really any specific answers, just that you want it to be generally the same. The interesting comments regarding the next season came from the following question, asking for what improvements could be made. https://preview.redd.it/880zxp2gqe4b1.jpg?width=725&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d228374dbfa1566e94654037cf7b8b27148dc4a9 Moving onto the negatives, and, also as we expected, the biggest drawback of the new subreddit was the reduction in engagement. There are far fewer comments on the posts now than there were before, and fewer votes on the captain & bench polls. This was also heavily discussed when we asked for improvements for next season, since the most commented change was to post more on the FantasyPL subreddit - which we will commit to doing. The number of subscribers to the subreddit has grown steadily since we started using it, and over time I am sure it will continue to grow, but we will also be more active in posting and 'advertising' the team to involve more active users. The next most commented aspect of the subreddit that people didn't like is that, as occurs all through Reddit, older comments generally get more upvoted than newer ones, even if the newer comment is a better idea. There isn't a huge amount we can do to address this, but we can try turning on Competition Mode on transfer suggestion posts. This would hide the number of upvotes each comment has and display them in a random order, so that people aren't as easily influenced to just vote on whatever comment is already top when they look at a post. The final two issues people had with KneejerkUnited was that it was hard to use and that the notification system didn't work. The notification system I have already spoken about - we would recommend to turn on notifications, since that has worked for 92% of people, and potentially you need to check your other account settings if it still isn't working. If you are then having difficulties with the subreddit and interacting with the posts then please contact us and we are more than happy to help. We find everything easier to manage on the new subreddit but everyone has to start somewhere, so if website functionality is an issue for you then let us know so we can make it a more enjoyable experience for you too! Regarding other improvements for next season that weren't already covered, people want us to make posts a bit earlier to capture earlier price rises and have more discussions in general before making transfers. We implemented a weekly team discussion thread which was always stickied at the top of the KneejerkUnited page, but maybe you were unaware of this or its functionality? Ideally we can have discussions there, potentially instigating early transfers at the start of the week, then toward the end of a week we would have a separate transfers thread if needed, to cement our plans going into the following gameweek. This is also something that should hopefully increase in functionality if user numbers and general engagement increase. Also, you are always free to make your own posts in the new subreddit! If you have a burning idea or transfer suggestion, we invite you to share your thoughts and we can all discuss there. You don't need to wait for one of us to create a post if you don't want to. Suggestions for a separate poll for a vice captain came up a few times, however 92% said earlier that they were happy with how the captain/vice captain polls are being done. For now we plan to leave the captain choices the same as we currently do it, but are welcome to a discussion or changing this if there is high demand for something new. The final improvement comments were from people asking if wildcard planning could be made easier to follow - and I'm not sure how in all honesty. Wildcards are complicated enough with your own team, but for a community team, it can be a mess with short turnaround times. The only advice I can give for now would be to always look for the latest post when we are building a wildcard / free hit team, since replying to old posts means we have already moved on from that decision, and your suggestion won't be looked at. https://preview.redd.it/b66mztzkue4b1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e1f65e7eb0cc8b48981b0791cfc9e2dae1a6b30 As part of the survey we also asked what area of the world you live in, to give us an idea of what time zone people want the posts to be. 64% of respondents are from Europe with a further 8% in Africa, with similar time zones. Since the Premier League is in England, and we are also all based in Europe, we will keep our posting schedule as it has been (which generally means no post before 7am and no post later than 10PM GMT). There may be occasional exceptions for late news or so, but there won't be much activity outside of this general time frame. This means the 28% of you living in North America & Asia are unfortunately getting the short-end of the straw here, but there's nothing we can do about that. https://preview.redd.it/3v3p73y1we4b1.jpg?width=485&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8506ea7610a3b853d1a85e78c6e93cf120e94341 ----- Part 3: Short summary - This was the worst year for Kneejerk United history. We only broke into the top 1m players in GW27, then created our new subreddit in GW28. The poor finish therefore can't be attributed to the creation of the subreddit and we will remain on KneejerkUnited next season
- The survey was posted just to the KneejerkUnited subreddit, and 86% of you who answered said you have been happy with the move here from the main FantasyPL subreddit
- Of those who haven't enjoyed it, a large portion hadn't turned on notifications. We would highly recommend everyone who wants to follow the community team to subscribe to the KneejerkUnited subreddit and subscribe to notifications. This has worked well for 92% of people
- Guides on how to turn on notifications are here: Website, iPhone, Android
- Despite some calls to separate the captain & vice captain polls, we will be leaving this the same for now - but may change in the future if necessary. The same applies for how the bench polls are conducted
- The biggest benefit of the subreddit was that all KJU related posts are together in one place and other fpl related content was filtered out
- Although non-transfer related discussions were taking place since moving to the new subreddit, there are calls to further increase this, and have earlier posts to capture early price rises. There is a weekly discussion post every Monday to have general team discussions, and you are welcome to create your own posts as well
- Increasing user engagement was the biggest call for improvement next year, and we will focus on cross-posting more things to the FantasyPL subreddit to attract more users to join us at KneejerkUnited
- We will also try turning on competition mode in transfer suggestion posts to stop the influence of older comments being more upvoted compared to newer, better comments
----- Part 4: Final survey Finally, we would like to hear from those of you reading this from FantasyPL. There were lots of you engaging with Kneejerk United before we moved to KneejerkUnited, but a number of you did not join the new subreddit when we made the switch in March, and overall engagement is down. Would you mind letting us know your thoughts towards the community team please? Where you see the team headed next season, and if you would be interested in following along? If you haven't joined the new subreddit, may I ask why? Were you not aware of its existence or are there other factors in play? We would like the community team to be as open and inclusive to as many people as possible and would love to see it grow next season! ----- Part 5: Closing words There were a number of comments on the survey showing that people enjoy the constant updates to the team and the general process, and we were thanked for our work in running everything. From our point of view, we thoroughly enjoy doing it all and thank you for your appreciation! Although the end result wasn't what we were hoping for, in the end it was still a bit of fun. The Premier League kicks off on the 12th of August for the 2023/24 season, so at the beginning of August we will begin the process of setting up for the new year, here on KneejerkUnited! On behalf of u/chibibabymoon, u/FireflyKaylee and myself, we are looking forward to next season getting started! submitted by aFailG to KneejerkUnited [link] [comments] |
2023.06.07 11:04 lechatheureux The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 2 (The Kingdoms of Jangshun and Monyul)
Check out part 1 for context
The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 1 (Overview and The Gods) : worldbuilding (reddit.com) There are 5 connected Kingdoms that have Tonpa as their main religion these are.
Jangshun A Place of snow-capped Mountains and green Valleys, said to be built upon the ruins of the ancient Jungar people who controlled much of the area of Jangshun and the nearby kingdoms of Monyul and Taishigang.
Very little is known about the Jungar, their ruins are scattered throughout the landscape of Jangshun, and are often characterized by simple stone structures, pottery shards, and other artifacts. Based on these remains, it is believed that the Jungar were a relatively simple society, with a lifestyle that revolved around farming, herding, and other basic activities.
Despite their lack of sophistication, the Jugar are an important part of the history and culture of the region many myths and legends have grown up around them, the people of Jangshun often see the Jungar as a symbol of the enduring spirit of the region, and take pride in the fact that they were able to survive and thrive in a harsh and unforgiving environment. In addition to their physical remains, the Jungar have left a lasting impact on the people of Jangshun in other ways. Their language, customs, and traditions are thought to have influenced the culture of the later kingdom, and many people still feel a strong connection to the Jagun and their way of life.
The Capital of Jangshun is called Druktse, founded by Dragon Priests and the legendary Namgyal dynasty the city is known for its unique architecture, with buildings made of wood and stone, intricately carved and painted with colorful designs and motifs, the streets are narrow and winding, with prayer flags fluttering in the breeze and the sound of temple bells ringing in the air.
At the center of the city is the Royal Palace of Jigme Wangchuk, a majestic building that serves as the residence of the Royal Family, the palace consists of several wings and halls, each with its own specific function. The main hall is the center of political and ceremonial activities, where the king held court and received important guests. The royal family's private quarters were located in a separate wing, with opulent living spaces and lavish decorations.
One of the most impressive features of the palace is the Eagle Tower, a tall structure that houses the elite Eagle Guards, who were responsible for the king's security the tower is covered from top to bottom with intricate carvings of the bird of prey.
The palace is surrounded by lush gardens and fountains, and it is guarded by soldiers in traditional Eagle attire, the Eagle Guards of the palace of Jingme Wangchuk are an elite group of soldiers tasked with protecting the king and the royal family, known for their fearsome reputation and exceptional combat skills, the Eagle Guards are considered one of the most prestigious units in the Jangshun army.
The guards are named after the majestic eagles that inhabit the mountainous regions of Jangshun, and they were trained to emulate the hunting tactics of these birds of prey. They are adept at using the terrain to their advantage, and are particularly skilled at scaling steep cliffs and mountainous terrain to surprise and overwhelm their enemies. In addition to their exceptional combat skills, the Eagle Guards were also known for their loyalty and dedication to the royal family. They undergo rigorous training and were selected based on their physical prowess, intelligence, and character, to become an Eagle Guard, applicants must be graduates of both the School of the Father and School of the Dragon.
The Eagle Guards are outfitted in distinctive uniforms that featured a stylized eagle emblem, and they were armed with a variety of weapons, including bows, spears, and swords. They were also known to use eagle feathers and talons in their armor and equipment, as a nod to the unit's namesake.
Druktse is a hub of cultural and religious activities, with several monasteries and temples located throughout the city.
The most famous of these is the Tashicho Dzong, a stunning fortress monastery that serves as the seat of The Gyelpa (The Duke) the secondary ruler of Druktse and the center of Druk-Ta worship. The dzong is surrounded by high walls and towers, and is accessible through a grand gate that is guarded by soldiers. The interior of the dzong is a maze of courtyards, chapels, and offices, all connected by narrow passageways and staircases.
One of the most impressive features of Tashicho Dzong is its towering central fortress and monastery, which rises above the rest of the complex and can be seen from miles around. This fortress is home to the Dragon Priests and is one of the most important structures in Jangshun. The fortress monastery is also famous for its beautiful architecture and intricate artwork. The walls of the courtyards are adorned with colorful murals and paintings, while the chapels are filled with statues and other religious artifacts. Visitors to Tashicho Dzong can tour the complex and learn about Jangshun history and culture, as well as observe the daily routines of the monks who live and work there. The Monastery is open to the public during certain hours of the day, and visitors are advised to dress modestly and remove their shoes before entering the chapels. Even though the current royal family of Jangshun are connected to The Father, The Dragon holds a special place in Druktse.
The people of Druktse are known for their warm hospitality and their strong sense of community. They celebrate several festivals throughout the year, including the annual Tshechu festival, the 3 Gods Festival which features colorful dances and rituals performed by monks and laypeople.
To the north-east of the Kingdom lies the second biggest city in Jangshun, the city of Lhagyal, often called “The Fire-proof City”
Lhagyal is a mass of stone walls and buildings with precious little wood being used at all, the walls of the city are imposingly high and even the central palace is relatively flat and does not rise above the walls, there are 4 gates made of pure steel and those are the only entrances and exits.
Inside the city walls, the streets are narrow and winding, with tall, tightly packed buildings constructed from rough-hewn stone. The architecture is distinct, with flat roofs and ornate metal doors decorating the doorways and windows, many of the buildings are built into the city's walls, their backs resting against the ancient stones.
There is more to the city than what meets the eye. Beneath the streets lie a labyrinth of tunnels and catacombs, built for both practical and spiritual purposes. Some are used for storage or as escape routes, while others are filled with ancient artifacts and sacred relics. The catacombs are also home to a complex network of underground temples and shrines and busy streets that are home to underground residences and businesses.
Despite its rugged appearance, the city's architecture is a testament to its resilience. It has withstood numerous attempts at invasion over the centuries, including attacks by powerful enemies armed with the latest in siege weaponry. The city's fortifications are a marvel of engineering, designed to withstand even the most devastating attacks and yet, for all its defensive prowess, the city has never lost sight of its cultural heritage.
The most famous instance of this was when the neighbouring Confucian Kingdom of Jinyun attempted to invade Jangshun with its impressive military might, scores of loyal foot-soldiers hardened by decades of conflict and advanced siege technology that included weapons that used fireworks.
The city withstood months of warfare with Lhagyal earning its nickname of “The Fire-proof City” The stone structures withstood the fireworks and the hard rock of the walls withstood the Jinyun catapults, outside the city several guerilla efforts by the Eagle Guards, The Company of the Hand and The White Tigers from Monyul lending their support repelled attempted on-foot invasions by the hardened Jinyun soldiers.
In the south-west of Jangshun, near the borders of Monyul and Taishigang lies the town of Gyalpeling, a place revered by monks and pilgrims alike. Gyalpeling, meaning "Abode of the Victorious" is a small yet vibrant town located in a remote corner of the kingdom. Its strategic location, surrounded by imposing mountains and blessed with fertile lands, has made it a crucial hub for spiritual activities and monastic life. The town is centered around a grand monastery, which serves as the heart and soul of the community. The monastery, known as Samtenling Monastery, is a majestic complex of ornate buildings adorned with colorful murals, fluttering prayer flags, and the sound of chanting monks echoing through the air. It is a revered place of worship and learning, drawing scholars, practitioners, and seekers of wisdom from far and wide. The streets of Gyalpeling are lined with modest housing for monks, adorned with intricate woodcarvings and colorful paintings. The locals, known for their warm hospitality and deep reverence for Tonpa, every activity the townspeople engage in helps the monastery in some way, whether trading, farming or craftsmanship, every resident of Gyalpeling helps out the monastery in some way. The town also boasts natural hot springs, believed to have healing properties, which attract pilgrims and visitors seeking solace and rejuvenation. The pristine rivers and lakes surrounding Gyalpeling add to its enchanting beauty, serving as places for meditation, ritual ablutions, and scenic walks. Gyalpeling is not only a place of spiritual significance, but it also serves as a center of learning, with numerous scriptoria, libraries, and meditation caves where monks engage in intensive study, contemplation, and meditation, prospective monks come from all over the 5 Kingdoms to study in Gyalpeling, as monks educated within its walls are valued in any court of the Tonpa Kingdoms.
One of the most valuable cities in Jangshun isn't far from the capital, a short 1 hour horse ride east of Druktse stands the city of Jangtse, a jewel in the crown of the kingdom. Jangtse, meaning "Silver Peak" in the local tongue, owes its fame and prosperity to the rich veins of silver that run through the nearby mountains, making it a thriving center for mining and trade. At the heart of Jangtse rises a magnificent conical palace, known as Jang Potrang, or the "Silver Palace." The palace, glistening like a beacon atop the tallest hill in the city, is adorned with silver-plated roofs, walls, and pillars, reflecting the sunlight and casting a mesmerizing glow over the surrounding landscape. It serves as the royal residence, where the Count holds court and conducts affairs pertaining to the area between Jangtse and Druktse. The streets of Jangtse are lined with buildings that boast silver-plated facades, creating a surreal and shimmering sight as one walks through the city, often shining gold from reflecting the sunlight, the wealth of the city is evident in the intricate silver filigree work that adorns windows, doors, and rooftops of temples, mansions, and markets alike. The silversmiths of Jangtse are renowned for their craftsmanship, producing exquisite silverware and jewelry that are sought after by collectors and traders from distant lands. The city is a bustling center of commerce, with a vibrant market square where merchants from across the region gather to trade in silver, gemstones, textiles, and other precious goods. The sounds of bartering, laughter, and the clinking of silver coins fill the air.
The Armies of Jangshun are known for their ferocious foot-soldiers, the every-day rank and file soldiers of the Jangshun armies are regarded as the best in the region and are a feared prospect to face on any battlefield.
The soldiers of the army of Jangshun are highly disciplined and skilled in the art of warfare, and are renowned throughout the region for their courage and loyalty. They are trained in a variety of weapons and fighting styles, including archery, swordsmanship, and hand-to-hand combat.
It is said that the success of the army comes from the fact that many men and women who fight in it are from mountainous regions and are conditioned from a young age to move over mountainous land with ease, their armies can easily traverse land that would be impossible for normal armies to travel over, due to the fact that the soldiers know the land.
The army of Jangshun is led by a commander-in-chief, who is appointed by the common foot-soldiers and is responsible for the overall strategy and tactics of the army. Under the commander-in-chief, there are several generals and officers who oversee different units of the army, each with their own specific roles and responsibilities. The soldiers of the army of Jangshun are equipped with a variety of weapons and armor, including shields, helmets, and chainmail. They are also skilled in the use of traditional weapons, such as the da and the gochu, which are types of swords. In addition to their skills in battle, the soldiers of the army of Jangshun are also highly respected for their loyalty and devotion to their ruler and country. They are known for their strong sense of duty and honor, and are willing to lay down their lives in defense of their homeland. The army of Jangshun is often called upon to defend the kingdom against invading forces, and has a long history of successful battles and campaigns. Their reputation for courage and skill has earned them the respect of their neighbors and allies, and they are a source of pride and inspiration for the people of Jangshun.
One of the most famous regiments from Jangshun is the “Wheel of Steel” A heavily armored longsword unit founded by Princess Jamyang Daughter of King Kunga and Sister of King Yangchen of the Yeshe Dynasty after she travelled to Europe and witnessed people fighting in full suits of armor, this was a foreign concept in the areas around her and she implemented the idea with her Father's (And later Brother's) full support they were first deployed in aid of Taishigang who were experiencing an invasion from a nearby Dharmist Kingdom. The longswords cleaved through the invading forces lack of armor and their steel plates deflected blows.
Monyul Monyul is a land of vast open spaces and stunning natural beauty. The kingdom is home to a proud and fiercely independent people, who have built a rich culture and a strong military tradition, its plains are green and warm during the summer but snow is not uncommon in winter. Dharmaling is the capital city of Monyul and is nestled in the hills, surrounded by winding rivers and vast grasslands. It is a city steeped in tradition and culture, with a rich history that stretches back centuries.
Dharmaling was built as the northern most outpost of the Dharmist Indraprastha Empire but was conquered by Tonpa forces from a tribe that would eventually become known as the Monyul. The city is built around a central marketplace, where merchants from all over the known world come to trade their wares. The marketplace is a bustling hub of activity, filled with the sounds of bargaining and haggling, and the aromas of exotic spices and perfumes.
The Company of the Wind have their main offices in Dharmaling and use the bustling 10 storey wooden building to plan its operations throughout the known world. The streets of Dharmaling are relatively wide due to the constant horse carts that pass through them. The buildings are made of stone and wood, with intricately carved facades and ornate balconies. Many of the houses have flat roofs, which are used as outdoor living spaces during the warmer months. At the heart of the city lies the great monastery of The 3 Gods, unlike in other cities which have separate monasteries for the three Gods, this temple combines them as a display of unity between the three sects. The massive structure dominates the skyline, with its towering walls and intricate carvings. The monastery is home to a community of monks, who dedicate their lives to the study and practice of Tonpa. Surrounding the monastery are the homes of the nobility, who are known for their wealth and power. These grand estates are filled with beautiful gardens and courtyards, and are often adorned with intricate carvings and colorful murals. Outside the city walls, the landscape is dotted with small villages and nomadic encampments. These communities are home to herders and farmers, who make their living tending to the region's yaks and sheep. Despite its remote location, Dharmaling is a city of great importance, both culturally and politically. It is a place of pilgrimage for Monks, Merchants and laypeople from all over the world, and is also a hub of trade and commerce. The people of Dharmaling are proud of their heritage and their way of life, and are fiercely protective of their city and its traditions.
A 30 minute walk to the west of Dharmaling lies the Temple of Tong Thang, the Beehive Temple, as visitors approach the temple, they are greeted by the gentle humming of bees that buzz around the entrance, seemingly inviting them inside, the entrance is adorned with ornate wooden doors intricately carved with depictions of bees in flight, the temple is home to hundreds of bee colonies. The interior of the temple is a marvel of craftsmanship. The walls are adorned with honeycomb patterns carved into the stone, creating a mesmerizing visual display. Soft light filters through small openings in the dome-shaped ceiling, the centerpiece of the temple is a large altar made of honey-colored stone, adorned with intricate carvings of bees and honeycombs, where devotees offer their prayers and offerings. The Temple of Thong Tang is a place of worship dedicated to the reverence of bees and their significance in nature and the cycle of life, every day priests and priestesses of The Mother make their way to the temple to tend to the bees, bringing them water and sliced fruits, every year there is a festival outside the temple where priests and priestesses of Caihong distribute honey gathered from the bees.
Monyul is home to a large lake called Jangchub Tso, the lake is bordered by lush green forests and snow-capped mountains to the south-east, a product of Monyul's border with Taishigang.
On the edge of the lake there is a large city called "Gangri Thang", which is known for its fish markets and skilled boatwrights, nobles from the surrounding Kingdoms often commission boatwrights from Gangri Thang to build grand freshwater barges for them.
Several villages surround the lake, mostly fishing and farming communities, every spring fishermen from these villages make their way to Gangri Thang with hundreds of fish, hoping to hock their catch to fishmongers, tourists and Company of the Wind officers.
The fish they carry is mainly the several species of trout that live in the lake but a few of the lucky ones carry the Golden Mahseer, a gleaming fish variety that is said to be very difficult to catch, although the taste of the fish pales in comparison to the trout, the Golden Mahseer is revered for its scales that give off a vibrant golden glow, these scales are often used in ceremonial dress of the region adoring clothing and jewellery.
The people of Monyul are also skilled artisans, known for their intricate weavings and pottery. The kingdom is home to many workshops and marketplaces, where merchants sell their wares to buyers from all over the region. The people of Monyul are known for their skill at horsemanship, and the kingdom is home to some of the finest cavalry units in the region. The army of Monyul is also composed of archers and spearmen, who are trained in the art of mounted combat and guerrilla warfare.
The most prestigious regiment of Monyul is a cavalry unit called the White Tigers, the horsemasters of the White Tigers are known as the strictest in the Tonpa Kingdoms, if a horse fails a single training drill both the horse and rider are deemed unworthy. The White Tigers main weapon is a thick spear, painted red with a bronze spearhead, it has a heavy counterweight at the back that also doubles as a blunt weapon. Their secondary weapons are a heavy sword and a short bow.

2023.06.07 10:46 lechatheureux The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 1 (Overview and The Gods)
(First I'll provide a bit of context, this is a timeline of Earth where several pagan religions have survived into the Medieval age, I'm focusing on the region around the Himalayas where a religion of my making called Tonpa has spread from the desert to the Jungle, I've changed the names of the Geographical features and real life religions and areas/Kingdoms around a bit so let me give you a guide. )
Jangshun - Tibet.
Monyul - Bhutan.
Taishigang - Nepal.
Tsaparang - Bangladesh.
Khotesh - Khotan/Xinjang basin.
Dharmist - Buddhist and Hindu.
Tengger - Tengri.
Boncho - Bon.
(This is going to be split up into several posts, just a warning)
An overview of the 5 Tonpa Kingdoms.
In the Himalayas region, stretching from the Khotesh basin to the north-west through the snow-capped mountains and down the jungles surrounding the Brahmaputra delta, are 5 Kingdoms that have a shared history, connected by one religion.
The religion is known as Tonpa and it sprang from ancient beliefs in the Jangshun plateau, and spread to encompass an impressively large area, beating out several other religions, most notably Boncho and Dharmism and grew to resist attempts to conquer its lands by Tengger and Confucian forces.
---We, the people of Tonpa know in our hearts that the Universe is a giant river and all stars and planets are floating through it, destined for the Great Lake of Rebirth, the Cosmic River starts from a giant fountain where the 3 Universal Gods brokered peace with one another after a great 30,000 year war, the souls created as fighters in the war gained worldly bodies and were greeted by the 3 Universal Gods.
In the great fountain, two places were created, the one atop the fountain a joyous place of life and celebration, but under the fountain a cold place formed, one of constant death and torture, the 3 Universal Gods declared that all shall experience both these places, the righteous shall see the bottom place first to cleanse themselves of their life's transgressions before being rewarded with time among the 3 Universal Gods, the wicked shall see the joyous place first, for even the wicked cannot go their entire lives without doing good and seeing a paradise lost when their good deeds reward expires is a punishment unto itself.
“You shall see the least of your deeds first” Promised the Universal Gods, for once your mortal deeds are rewarded and punished then your soul shall spring forth from the fountain and become the water that carries stars and worlds along the Cosmic River, once your soul reaches the Great Lake of Rebirth, you are carried to a world where a newborn body awaits your soul, if you are righteous enough you will be carried to a world that is destined for the Great Lake of Rebirth for once a world enters the Great Lake of Rebirth the soul ceases to exist and once a soul ceases to exist it spreads its will across the Universe and becomes an unknowing part of life itself.
The 3 Universal Gods give every star a world that revolves around it and every world 3 Earthly Gods to govern in their stead as avatars.
- Excerpt from “The Sagas"
On Earth the three gods that Tonpa follows are are.
Daiden - The Father
Daiden's is considered to be the overseer of the arts and intelligence, any pursuit that involves the calm mind and intelligence is seen to the realm of Daiden.
The religious text of Daiden; The Sagas is the oldest of the three texts and the stories contained in the text are thought to be much older. It is said that the followers of Daiden, honour him by engaging in righteous intellectual thought and honest pursuit. The animals associated with Daiden are.
The Monkey – The Monkey is the main animal associated with Daiden, they are intelligent, communal and unpredictable, the long-standing ruling dynasty of The Kingdom of Jangshun has the sigil of the Monkey.
The Elephant – The Elephant is wise and gentle despite their heavy weight and large size, they quickly band together to eliminate threats when a member of their community is in danger.
The Eagle – King of the skies, the Eagle is powerful and insightful, an Eagle landing before you is seen as a sign of tremendous good fortune, they keep a keen eye on the ground and can spot tiny details from afar at great speeds. The Royal guards of Jangshun adorn themselves with Eagle feathers and have motifs of eagle heads on shields and weapons. The Father is also associated with rain as in times of rain people are often inside and rely on intellectual pursuits to pass the time.
Groups associated with Daiden are.
Rain Society – Rain Society see themselves as the rain that brings growth, they talk with young devotees of the two other Gods and challenge them to go about their worship and associated pursuits in more intellectual ways. The Monkey Society – The Monkey Society are a guild for anyone involved in theatre, actors, writers, theatre owners, they send troupes out to remote communities to entertain them, they read scripts to find great playwrights and they make and repair props.
Caihong - The Mother
Caihong's realm is considered to be practical skills like farming, hunting and medicine, fulfilling and nurturing, Caihong is prayed to every year in spring hoping for a bountiful harvest.
Caihong's religious text is The Observations, the newest of the three sacred texts in Tonpa. Adherents of Caihong are caring but at times exclusionary, like a mother favouring her own family.
The animals associated with Caihong are.
The Fox – The Fox is the main animal associated with Caihong, they are clever, practical and they are known for building safe homes for their family.
The Bear- The Bear is fiercely strong and will use that strength to protect their family, Bearskin armor is worn by people that are dual graduates of The School of the Mother and The School of the Dragon.
The Bee – The Bee is small but they are caring of their community, they protect their Queen with their life and provide honey and wax for people.
Caihong is associated with sunshine as an allegory for the light and warmth of motherhood.
Orders associated with Caihong are.
The Order of the Fox – The Order of the Fox devote themselves to making and repairing furniture, because Foxes are expert home builders, The Order of the Fox honour the Fox by donating furniture they make to people without and repairing items that break.
The Order of Spring - A group of doctors that make it their mission to heal anyone in need, they are based in Taishigang but are spread throughout the Tonpa Kingdoms.
Druk-Ta - The Dragon
Druk-Ta is the God of War, wind and thunder, their realm is seen as being anything that requires intensity, both physical and mental, games, sport and trade are also seen as being governed by them.
The animals associated with Druk-Ta are.
The Snake – The main animal associated with Druk-Ta, the snake isn't seen as evil in Tonpa, rather a cunning protector of itself and its land, humans that fail to respect the snake's territory are punished, there is a saying often repeated by The Dragon Priests “You would take 10 steps and be bitten by 20 snakes” Meaning “ You are reckless.
The Tiger – The most feared hunter of the plains, the large Tiger population on the plateau of Khotesh is said to have protected the Tonpa Tribes from a large-scale invasion from a Tengger horde, the Tigers, sensing an opportunity for food attacked the Tengger camp at night, leaving the horde with a high number of injuries and casualties.
The Crane – Graceful and resourceful the Crane isn't an animal one would normally associate with a god of war, however the Dragon Priests take inspiration from the Crane's tempered movements and the resourcefulness of their diets.
Wind and thunder is associated with Druk-Ta as they represent the mental and physical intensity of the Dragon God.
Orders associated with Druk-Ta are.
Company of the Wind – The Company of the Wind are a large guild of merchants and couriers, they specialise in the procurement of rare goods for well-paying collectors, originally trade was seen as the realm of the Father but since trade caravans kept being attacked it was moved to the school of the Dragon by unanimous decision among the three temples, their reasoning was that if merchants knew how to fight trade could be protected better.
Dragon Company – Dragon Company are a mercenary company consisting entirely of transgender and non-binary warriors, as Druk-Ta is seen as genderless, people who fall outside of male and female are seen as being of Druk-Ta.
Company of the Hand – The Company of the Hand are an elite fighting force that place a strong emphasis on physical fitness, to join their ranks you must perform an obstacle course in a satisfactory time, the gruelling course is said to eliminate 9/10 of all applicants, to advance in rank in the Company of the Hand applicants must perform the same course with weights around their wrists and ankles, these weights are a badge of honour and are worn at all times outside of battle, sleep and granted leave, the more bands of weights, the higher one is ranked.

2023.06.07 10:20 CodeSlayer_69 Putting too much pressure because of fear
Hello guys!
So basically I am 29 and I started learning coding about 4 months ago in SoftUni(Bulgaria). It's around 2 year program from 0 to Full Stack that I found really good. We have facebook group, schedule, 3 times a week 3 hours live classes with Q&A during it, exercises, homework, exams, mentor help, facebook group and tons of good things. The program is built for people who work and want to enter it steady.
And here comes my problem. I want it fast. I worked last few years mainly logistic work, driving reachtrucks, forklifts and warehouse jobs that I hated every single one of them. I was feeling I can do much more and actually I really can. I feel I am understanding very well the programming, the topics and since I was a child I love logic. Just my path took me to work for safety and never risk. I always had desire for growth, personal, spiritual, intellectual. I always was feeling those type of production jobs I was working for toxic. If e ever met a person that I liked in those jobs, well that person was there temporarily, because he was probably smart and knew this is to sustain his goals. But not me!
I was driven by fear and I kept working those type of jobs, while being abroad in another country, while I even did not make research or something what I have in the area. Even I was not on some stable contract, just working as temp worker for agencies. Every single one of those jobs I nailed, get really good and then get really bored. I tried coding while I was working since 2020 but I always gave up.
Well, April this year, after I finish my shift at the warehouse, I got informed that I will be laid off. That was after I was wondering for 2 months should I quit or not, when I wanted to quit with all my heart. And that was blessing!
I started immediately to code more( I was already in 2 months introcutiry course with C Sharp) and I nailed the exam with 600 out of 600 points, so I entered the full program. Now I am halfway trough the Fundamentals course. So far I learned : statements(if-else if , switch ) , loops, data types, methods, some particle understing of arrays(which i don't push myself) and I feel like i really like this thing. I bough myself a good MacBook Pro with half of my savings, because my old laptop was shit and I have support from my girlfriend and family.
But I keep pushing myself too much, to the point I start feeling stress that I am not doing good enough, i must code every free minute BECAUSE OF FEAR! Fear not ending up again in those type of jobs i worked last 6 years! I am working part time delivery guy right now, so I can code a bit more, but I feel I must find a full time job, even though I can make it normal with part time job, since I can cover all my needs.
But no no, I must be really good! I must be ahead of most of my classmates! I kind of like that mentality, but also sometimes I feel it takes from my enjoyment of life. My goal is to find a job, that will allow me to live comfortably , have decent salary and enjoy my life. I don't want to build something that will change the world or be super competitive and give all my life to coding. Just to find a job, that is challenging, well paid, that I feel proud that I have profession.
I believe in myself and I am 100% sure that I will do it. The thing is, I don't want to burn myself out and I don't want to stress myself too much. What are some realistic tips and advices that you can give me. I think i am a bit affected by all this hustle culture and sleep is for the weak. Part of me is truly believing this is true. I felt like I wasted my last 10 years and now i want to over compensate, but I feel that i am getting a bit burned out, from the high goals and standards I put myself in.
And that stress is mainly coming that I don't have right now stable income, and I feel a full-time job will slow me down a lot in terms of learning to code. I feel really fucked up in my head those days and any solid advice will be of help. No sweet talks, harsh truth is always welcome. If you read all this, thank you for having interest in my story!

2023.06.07 10:18 dead_inside0211 I feel like a disappointment
Everyday is the same, and I don’t know what to do. I show up for work everyday not excited whatsoever to deal with anyone’s bull shit. As a mechanic I have to deal with the expectations of the service advisor and customers which can sometimes be unrealistic. I have been at this job for almost a year now, previous job was for 4 years at another dealership. My friend recommended I come to my current job because it was an increase in pay and a better area and he thought it would be better for me. I applied and went in with that mentality. 2/3 of his statements were true. Better pay and better area, did not connect the dots that better area meant more expensive. I don’t believe it has been better for me. Roughly 6 months into the job I started to regret making the move, looking at it now I traded living paycheck to paycheck in a less expensive area for living paycheck to paycheck in a more expensive area.
The reason I feel like a disappointment is because coming into this job I had great references from my buddy and my previous managers and coworkers. Everything they said about me is now a lie. I feel as if I have failed to live up to the expectations they set when referring me. I was warned my current job is a completely different beast than what I was used to and I didn’t listen. It is intense, and after being almost a year in I am still intimidated. I have become inefficient with my productivity, and just go brain dead when I get diag. I take pride in my work so when I’m wrong or screwed something up I take it personal. I call myself an idiot for screwing up something simple. My friend who referred me has now become a bit of a dick towards me. I feel like people are only nice to me out of pity, but are constantly talking shit about me when I’m not around. I have become extremely unmotivated. I hate going to work. I have become very depressed lately. I’ve become an alcoholic going through a gallon of liquor a week just to numb the pain of me being a failure.
I feel like I let everyone down. My fiancé and kids moved with me to this expensive area so I can have this better paying job I don’t want anymore. I want to quit. I want something different and almost mindless. Something I can do without affecting the condition of someone’s personal property. I have thought about going into fast food again, I know I was last happy doing that. Or trying something slightly different like retail at a sporting goods store. But it’s doesn’t seem financially viable. I’ve been scrolling indeed, looking at postings that seem to interest me. Then realize I’d probably fail at that job too. I don’t know what to do. Do I leave and start over everything, struggling to surivive financially? Or do I stay, and continue to struggle mentally?
Sorry if this seems like complaining. I don’t have anyone to open up to.

2023.06.07 10:13 Practical_Ant8384 AITA for not wanting to go a party where there's alcohol?
Growing up, both my parents were alcoholics and were extremely abusive. They thought it was funny to give me sips of alcohol when I was very underage (between the ages of 4 - 9) and then they would verbally and physically hurt me the next day because I drank their alcohol. It was bizarre. They'd try to convince me that I was being rebellious and stealing alcohol from them when they would literally force it down my throat whilst laughing. I'm also autistic which caused a lot of additional conflict.
I (20m) haven't moved away completely due to lack of funds but I am in student accommodation so my contact with them is fortunately limited
I stay away from alcohol completey. I haven't consumed any since I was 14 and my mum shoved a glass down my throat, giggling.
It's the first year of university and there are a lot of parties going on. I was invited to one but I thought I'd ask someone if there was going to be alcohol. I asked a guy (who I think I'm friends with?) He's the type of guy who's very kind and friendly with everyone and everyone, including the lecturers, are always seen happy talking to him. He's really cool. He's the only person in our main class who I have the number of.
Anyways, so I messaged him and he said yes, definitely. He asked me if i was going and I said no because I'm not comfortable around alcohol. He said that majority of the class were going because the host was quite wealthy so it was going to be a good party. He knows that I'm not comfortable around alcohol as we had conversations before, as he also had an alcoholic parent growing up. We also bonded over the fact that both of us are in the closet. Then he said that he'd feel bad if I wasn't there and asked what I was going to do during that time instead. I said that I was going to finish my assignments in the library and he said, perfect! If you don't mind, I'll join you, I've got work that I need to finish too. I replied that if he's sure, then I don't mind.
A couple days later, a group of people (5 people) come up to me and ask if it's true that he's not going. I think he told the host and his friends that he would be in the library with me, doing our work. Immediately they started asking for me to tell him to go and that I should come along as well. He's quite popular and a lot of people like to talk to him so they were upset that he wasn't going to go. They said it was unfair that he wasn't going because of me. I said that I'll message him later just so they'd leave.
Now I'm a bit torn on what to do. The things they were saying to me made me feel like I should just cancel our meeting in the library but I also feel like this is an opportunity to make a friend.
Sorry if this doesn't read well, English is my 3rd language.

2023.06.07 10:11 autotldr How much will the construction of a new hydroelectric power plant in Kherson region cost - Ministry of Economy of Ukraine
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 11%. (I'm a bot)
After the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, the cost of building a new one may be about $1 billion, since it is not only about installing new hydraulic units, but also about restoring the integrity of a huge dam.
"Russia has once again proved to the world that it is a terrorist state, because the undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant entails environmental, economic consequences, a great threat to radiation and food safety. The cost of building a new hydroelectric power plant could be around $1 billion. It will take at least five years to restore the dam alone, and the cumulative effect of the humanitarian and environmental consequences of the explosion will only increase," commented Yulia Svyrydenko, Minister of Economy of Ukraine.
She also noted that as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station dam by the occupiers, 80 settlements may be flooded, part of the flora and fauna of the Kherson region may be destroyed, several million people may be left without drinking water, food security and other catastrophic consequences may be threatened.
"The international community must act as tough as possible against Russia. Now Ukraine needs the fastest possible assistance in minimizing and eliminating the consequences of the subversion in the interests of all mankind. First and foremost, we are talking about dismantling and rebuilding the entire new hydroelectric power plant complex from scratch. According to preliminary estimates by the Ministry of Environment and the State Environmental Inspectorate, water resources have been damaged by UAH 2 billion. The amount will only increase," emphasized Svyrydenko.
A headquarters for liquidation of the consequences of the Russian explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station has already been established under the chairmanship of Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
UAH 1.5 billion has also been allocated for the construction of new water mains to provide Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol and Marhanets with drinking water.
