2023.06.06 18:30 meatymilk My Neighbor leaves his Aircompressor on 24/7
Preface
I am very upset about this whole situation so I apologize for the lengthy post but I just want to be thorough and provide as much context as possible.
TL: DR What legal action can I take against my neighbors who refuse to comply with requests to turn off their air compressor that goes off 24/7?
The Problem
My Neighbor (husband and wife; empty nesters) has an air compressor attached to the outside of his shop. He does not shut it off, so over a day or two, it will randomly kick on for about 2 mins to repressurize the tank. This could be at 3 pm or 3 am. This is loud enough to abruptly wake us up at night.
Have you talked to them?
First time:
Yes, we moved in almost a year ago and both parties were happy to meet and friendly towards each other. After a month or so I got the wife's attention and as delicately as possible explained the situation. She agreed and said she would speak to her husband about it. We exchanged numbers and I sent her a thank you text for understanding. After a week no action was taken and we continued to be woken up by the air compressor.
Second time:
I sent a text message asking nicely once more to please turn off the air compressor. The following day I saw the husband put a timer on the air compressor. The timer was set between 6 am and 8 pm which is just on the line of being acceptable but whatever at least we could sleep through the night.
Called the cops:
After about a month or two on a Saturday night, the air compressor was kicking on every 10 mins for the whole night. The timer must have been removed. I figured he opened the valve for whatever reason and forgot to shut it off. He took notice the next day and turned it off. On Wednesday he turned the air compressor back on and it started kicking on every 10 mins thereafter. We waited until midnight then decided to call the sheriff. They told him to shut off the air compressor and he complied that night. The following morning the wife sent me a text calling us un-neighborly and that there was a leak in the line blablabla and that next time just call them. I didn't respond.
Heated Argument
Calling the cops seemed to work for the most part for a good while. Sometimes it would kick on once every other week or so but I assumed he just forgot about it, and it's not worth my time kicking up more animosity between us. After 2 or 3 months it was just left on again so we were back at square one. No timer just randomly kicking on every day or so. At this point, I have never spoken to the husband and I have not had any contact with the wife after the cops were called. After about 2 weeks of this, I decided that I will try to catch the husband while he is working in his yard.
I explained to him that this has been going on for almost a year and it needs to stop. It escalated from there when we yelled at each other and threw insults. Once he started getting aggressive towards me I walked away and he put the timer back on the air compressor. This was on Friday (06-01) and I have not heard it since. With that being said as the pattern shows it's only a matter of time before this starts happening again so I would like to get in front of it.
Legal Advice Questions
I live in Lakeport, CA. in unincorporated land. I spoke to a sheriff and we do not have a noise ordinance. The sheriff did mention something about a right to peace.
What can I do about this? I am completely green to this and have no idea how to proceed if I can. Am I simply f***ed or can I take legal action? Moving would come at a great financial loss. If I do have something I can move forward with what is the cost are we looking at $XXX or $X, XXX or $XX, XXX?
Other FAQ's
Why doesn't it wake up them or other Neighbors
The neighbors can't hear it themselves because of the positioning of their house. (compressor is behind the shop at some distance from their house) My bedroom window is about 30 yards from their air compressor with a direct line of sight. Since it's a semi-rural area and distance from other houses I figure other Neighbors chalk it up to road noise or whatever.
Why don't you just keep calling the cops
I tried but because it's random, the police will not wake people up unless they themselves hear it going off.

2023.06.06 18:29 Lukeskywalker899 Now that the game is out, how do people feel about the Bounty Hunter's implementation?
Most of the posts I have read about the BH are from when the game was in early access and he was just re-added into the game. But now that the game has been out for a bit, what does everyone think of implementation now?
I personally am not a fan of it, as the Bounty Hunter was my favorite character in DD1; so not being able to have him on my team from start to finish is a big letdown. I personally wish that we could have him from the start of a run. If they still want to have him be a mercenary then just deduct the candles cost up front rather than having to replace a hero halfway through. I think it would be a good balance to him, as it still technically has a cost to use him, but he doesn't temporarily replace a hero and also gets to benefit from the relations system.

2023.06.06 18:29 FabGuada SOLO RP PROJECT - Week #13
| Hey Tibians! First, I apologize for the delay, this weekend was double exp and I haven't had too much time to play, so even less for writing :-) I have a lot of news, first of all, I got a new guild. It's small, but very fun people. They are planning to do POI and Inqui in some days, so that's incredibly useful for a solo player. It injects a bit more fun into daily game hours. I also bought my first T2 item (yes, I know I've been thinking a lot about this). I got a depth lorica T2 for 6kk, pretty cheap (thinking that fusion it to T2 costs 5kk). I'm now looking if I can find any T1/T2 bow of cataclysm which will be my next upgrade. Last but not least, what kind of bosses do you suggest to me to start hunting? All right, let's talk about the details of this week's progress: Main Objectives for Week #13: - Level 245; possible new spots to test:
- Barkless
- Not tried yet.
- Something else? I’ll look if there are more spots to try at this level.
- Tested Grim Reapers, it was fun.
- Quests
- Find a team to complete WOTE
- Couldn’t do it yet.
- Still thinking about doing Warzone access.
- Couldn’t do it yet.
- Thinking to complete Pirats Quest to get access to the boss.
- Doing tasks every day I remember
- I’ll need to start looking at the new high-level quests that I can start on my level, not sure what I can do at this point.
- Probably jumping into some bosses.
- Charms
- I’ll keep going to different spawns to complete bestiary while leveling.
Played time: from Saturday 27th May to Friday 2nd, June. Achievements: - Level 246
- Got some levels on Banuta as rolled Medusa prey, it’s not amazing exp, still taking a long to kill, but worth it if lucky with rares. Around 3 - 3.5kk exp (peaked around 5 on double)
- Got some other levels on Werehyenas as rolled the prey. It was really good, around 4 - 4.5kk with summon (not double). Impossible to hunt there on double exp events.
- Hunted one exp prey on Darashia Grim Reapers. It was good, 2.5kk aprox on 150%. During double (Friday) peaked on 4kk, it was great tbh. Not worthy without prey. It was amazing to hunt those monsters hehe.
- A couple of levels on Glooth Bandits as it’s always worth and chill hunt. On average I do 2kk exp/hr on 150%.
- Rolled an exp prey on one of the Pirats, hunted there one level I believe. 1.8kk exp/hour but nice profit.
- Acquisitions:
- Bought a Depth Lorica T2 (it was cheap, 6kk)
- Tested on Grim Reapers and the dodge thing is so cool.
- Bought a Lasting Excercise Wand to rush ML on the double weekend.
- Sold some TC ofc.
- Quests, did some more:
- Did some Pirats
- Bestiary:
- Not updates on this.
- Skills
- Looking forward to get 1 more during double weekend.
Deaths: - No deaths during this week, great!
Next week's objectives: - Level 255; possible new spots to test:
- Barkless?
- Drakens?
- Lava Lurkers (just to try them, don’t like the idea of wasting)
- Try Grimvale Werewolf and Werebear cave.
- Glooth Tower
- Quests
- Find a team to complete WOTE
- Still thinking about doing Warzone access.
- Continue Pirats Quest to get access to the boss.
- Probably going to start Grimvale quest and hunt its bosses.
- Laiden and Tentugly access? Someone told me it’s worth, actually looking into it.
- Charms
- I’ll keep going to different spawns to complete Bestiary while leveling.
Thanks as always for reading all the way down here. I do appreciate all comments and suggestions on the progress. Let's keep it up! A new addition to every week's content, I'll post a fun screenshot, this time choose the one from the last level on Friday (no filter, please do not complain on my windows xD): https://preview.redd.it/xd6ovz5icf4b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d27ea8dc9f408a516e9caab2f8d7f1dd041cbf2 See you all in Tibia folks! submitted by FabGuada to TibiaMMO [link] [comments] |

2023.06.06 18:28 Hot_Doggin Automotive Shop Taking Advantage, How to Best Protect Myself?
This is my worst nightmare... I have a project car that was to have some highly custom sheet metal work (fender flares) performed. The car was dropped to the shop 9/4/2021, following several (verbal) conversations about scope, estimated cost, timeline, work details, and a plan for how things were to proceed. In retrospect, wishing I would have firmly requested a written/signed contract of any type.. I did sign a shop mechanics lien / acknowledgment that they were going to perform work on the vehicle.
The type of work is unique, so after a bunch of research and discussions my best option was in a neighboring state (Indiana), several hours away - This has really complicated supervision and my ability to keep a thumb on the shop/work.. (hindsight)
High level, a few key promises/agreements were made at the beginning of the project:
-Less than 6 months -"Way less than" $10K -Agreed upon scope of work (sheet metal fenders, wheel house finishing/sealing, seam sealing, body filler, primer, paint, transitional pieces and bumper refits to match fenders at a minimum).
Recognizing I was starting have real issues with the shops integrity and level of reliability, I began recording any phone conversation (1 party states), and attempting to get commitments via text/email.
As of current, rear fenders (sheet metal and wheel house finishing, only) has taken place, and the front fenders are in progress (still shaping/forming metal). The work is not complete per the understanding. I agreed to an initial deposit and progress draws with sufficient proof of completion, so the shop has been paid ~$5K via personal checks over the past ~1.5 years.
The shop owner gave me a completion date (via text) of 6/7/2023 and we agreed that I would pick the car up on 6/10/2023; I have seen very little evidence to suggest they're going to make it to the agreed state of work by this date. It has reached a point where I need to cut my losses, and regain possession regardless of work completion. He is near non-responsive when I attempt to reach out for clarifications, questions, updates.. which makes planning and understanding difficult.
My question is this (as well as surrounding tactical naivety): How do I go about getting the car back from him, but protect my money? Based on how things have been going, I fully expect the owner to give me a remaining balance due of $5K or more for work that doesn't meet my expectations. From my perspective, he has completed some work to plan, but not all of it, not on time, and highly likely to be not on budget. I expect him to be a reasonable human during any of this conversation (no threats or shouting) but, I don't expect him to be reasonable with his demands.. Do I have any recourse or way to address the cost after I have recovered my vehicle? (Should I opt to pay his CC fees and leverage CC company protection after the fact as part of settling this mess?) Should I make efforts to record the conversations we have when I go to retrieve the vehicle? How should I proceed?
Lots of lessons learned looking backwards.. so attempting to get out of this as best as possible without having to involve the court system or any otherwise unnecessary adrenaline.

2023.06.06 18:27 Quick_Analyst2836 Cycle Recap: from 0.9 first semester UGPA --> SLS with full need-based fellowship (super non-trad; FGLI; nURM; took me years to apply)
I posted some partial cycle recaps under a different account and wasn't going to post another one, but as a super non-trad/FGLI/slow applicant I thought this might be useful: I'll go over stats, goals, app process responses, background, and my decision/reflections. It's long but hopefully helpful.
Stats: 3.65, 174, T-2 softs, FGLI, nURM, 10-years work experience (5 in more prestigious work; 5 in service industry), big public undergrad (T-100ish)
Goals: federal clerkship, federal gov work (DOJ--OLC, NLRB), unicorn PI, in-house, politics (maybe). Very justice oriented, open to opportunities I don't know about yet.
App Process: - I had dropped out of undergrad after my first semester, when my GPA was literally 0.9 (I actually withdrew partway into the second semester so got a bunch of "W"s as well--but thank goodness I did or my GPA would have been totally irretrievable).
- About 3 years later, I got involved in politics and decided I wanted to go to law school. Went back and finished my undergrad, 2017-2020. Picked an easy major at the advice of a law prof I knew (god bless her for that advice) and got all A's and a lot of A+'s which weighted my GPA enough to get me back in the game. (I know folks have ~opinions~ on this strategy, but I was also working full time and overcoming that 0.9, so I don't feel bad about it.)
- Graduated in 2020 with highest honors
- Spent the terrible summer of 2020 self-studying for the LSAT: I used a Kaplan book and paid $100 for the unlimited practice tests. Studied 15-20 hours/week for about 10 weeks; took the August 2020 LSAT Flex (3 sections, remote proctored--which was super creepy). Got a 174 and didn't look back! I'm super glad I buckled down and focused and didn't have to take it more than once: everyone is different, but overall I'd recommend this over half-assed studying for longer...just rip off the bandaid.
- I was originally going to apply for 2022 matriculation, so I contacted my academic references in 2020 to establish that they would be willing to submit a LOR for me the next year: this was really key because I ended up waiting to apply, and it would have def been harder to get those LORs if I'd waited to ask/they forgot about me.
- Decided to wait another year to apply b/c I love my job and also wanted to save more money. Spent the time getting promoted a couple times and winning some awards to beef up my app.
- Started working on my PS/DS in spring/summer 2022. I wrapped my journey through trauma/abuse into both of them, but tried to not "trauma dump." I def recommend having a variety of friends read these, esp. if you have tough stuff to read, because you want to disclose enough the reader knows what you've overcome but not too much...
- Finalized professional LORs in spring 2022.
- Applied October 2022 to all schools, following 8 weeks of spending 20 hours/week on essays (in retrospect I should have done more for my essays earlier! It was seriously way more intense and grueling than I expected. I spent probably 40 hours on my PS, conservatively).
- Essays submitted: PS and DS for all (DS by other names for some, but same idea). Submitted GPA addendum for all schools and a separate statement for schools that asked specifically about academic probation. Used the same PS for all schools including Berk (it was 3 pages). Didn't submit a "why X" to any schools. For SLS, submitted the library essay and teaching essay.
Responses: - A: SLS ($$$$ - need-based), Penn ($$+), Berkeley ($$$$ - PI), UVA ($$$), Cornell ($+), NU ($), WashU ($$$+), UT ($$$) (withdrawn from all except SLS)
- WL: YLS, Columbia, NYU, GULC (withdrawn from all)
- R: Harvard (no KJ1)
I got the Berk PI scholly and was a finalist for the Penn PI scholly (interviewed). Interviewed at WashU and submitted Kiras for NU and UT
Background: I won't tell my
whole life story, but these are components that were relevant to my app
- Grew up very poor with a single dad and my mom wasn't involved. Dad was very abusive (physically, emotionally). Parents were blue collar but my dad's parents had gone to college (most schools considered this FG, though not Penn--read the fine print.)
- Went to a very good public high school that gave me a solid academic background as well as exposure to wealthy people and academics: this made a big difference in seeing how life could be.
- Went to flagship state school, declared STEM major the first time around. Had a lot of PTSD and trouble handling my trauma, which led to failing everything my first semester.
- Dropped out, started working in the restaurant industry. Worked 60+ hours/week to save money and support my own deadbeat husband and his brother (got married at 19; divorced at 23).
- We organized a union at the restaurant and I was a leader, helped negotiate the contract, and was a union steward. Got involved in local politics from this and found out I'm really good at organizing/politics. Volunteered heavily in politics for several years before getting a paid campaign job (county council race). Got a better campaign job (county commissioner) that parlayed into government work. Worked my way up in local gov to be the top non-elected position in county gov. Established reputation as lead political consultant in local/state politics.
- This work/volunteer experience put me in contact with people who have been incredible mentors to me and given me opportunities I wouldn't have been able to imagine just a few years ago. This includes: political leaders, elected officials, law school professors, partners at major law firms, etc. This also gave me a really well-rounded idea of what I could do as an attorney and a lot of people who I could ask questions off/learn about the profession. I cannot over-stress how life changing this has been: I wouldn't have even applied to schools like SLS without their encouragement and logistical support. As a FGLI person, I realize what a HUGE privilege this is. I have turned this around into being a mentoLOR writer for a lot of young people, esp. FGLI ones, women, and BIPOC, and their successes give me so much joy.
Decision/Reflections: - I had committed/deposited to UVA when I got the SLS response (late April). Even before I got fin aid info, I knew it would be hard to turn down, and then with fin aid it was a no brainer. I'll add that I am pretty debt averse but my mentors really pushed me to accept at SLS regardless of what the cost was going to be. I think it's good to be debt averse, but I also think there's a time to take a risk; risk aversion can be a trauma response (it is for me), and having mentors who could see the bigger picture (i.e. opportunities SLS will give me) has been a really helpful perspective.
- This is NOT a "I pulled myself up by my bootstraps and you can too" story. Yes, I have worked very hard, but I have also been super lucky (right place, right time). In LSAT terms, hard work is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for my successes: many other people work just as hard but don't get a break like this, and I realize the randomization in life and law school admissions. As my sister put it "You did the work of standing in line to buy a lottery ticket, and you got a winning ticket."
- I also have a lot of privilege despite being FGLI: white, cis/het, able-bodied, well spoken by rich/white standards (no accent, good grammar). It's gross, but I know that people who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA2+, fat, disabled, or speak with an accent are judged more harshly; and I want to acknowledge my "palatability" even when I'm the youngest/poorest/least educated/only woman in the room.
- Fuck the LSAC. I paid thousands of dollars (app fees, LSAT, practice tests), etc., because I made too much for the waivers but not enough to be able to afford that comfortably. Barriers like costs, applying for waivers, etc. only serve to make a private company money and hold back poor people. I am grateful for mentors who urged me to suck it up and spend more on apps for better odds at acceptance/$$$ (and for being able to afford that).
- I have a really hard time allowing myself to feel proud of myself (in general), but I am proud of myself for this.

2023.06.06 18:25 the_greasy_goose Price Differences Between Chinese and English Online Tea Stores (both will ship internationally!)
Hey guys, spur of the moment post. I noticed something when looking at tea websites, and that is some English websites are starting to stock Taiwanese competition teas. Unfortunately some seem to correlate "competition tea" with "very expensive tea." This is simply not the case, and I wanted to share this post to point out this problem... and to share a Chinese-language website (that can be easily Google translated) that people can buy competition baozhong tea from, for the price it should be sold at.
So I was checking out Taiwan Tea Craft today since someone else made a post about their Dayuling tea that caught my eye. I noticed they were selling this competition graded tea:
https://www.taiwanteacrafts.com/product/2022-winter-competition-wenshan-bao-zhong-tea-finalist-grade/?v=3d9975706be3 According to their picture, the tea is a 優良獎 (Fine Grade, or as Taiwan Tea Craft translated it: Finalist Grade) winner of Pinglin Farmer's Association Baozhong 2022 (ROC Year 111) winter competition. What impressed me was Taiwan Tea Craft's transparency in their listing. They took a picture of the product code, which is important for competition tea as people can find the producer through the product code. Taiwan Tea Craft mentioned the competition tea was from a Mr. Ong, so I checked the code on Pinglin Farmer's Association's website to see who this Mr. Ong is. The code (0186) and the name can be found here:
https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=8458718600837003&set=pcb.8458721244170072 According to Pinglin Farmer's Association's information, Mr. Ong is 翁萬 (翁 in Taiwanese is pronounced Ong). It's nice to see Taiwan Tea Craft is open about who their producer is. Googling 翁萬 shows that it's a pretty well respected producer, who has recieved multiple certifications from the farmer's association.
While Taiwan Tea Craft excelled in their transparency, they unfortunately sell their tea with a hefty "laowai tax" (a colloquial term for vastly upcharging Taiwanese/Chinese products when advertised in English and sold only to foreigners). Taiwan Tea Craft is selling this "Fine Grade Tea" for USD$198 for 300g in competition packaging. I get it, it's a competition tea, consumers are probably more willing to buy something at a premium if it has the name "competition" in it. However, the mark up is quite large... The thing about competition teas is the farmers association actually sets the MSRP for a certain grade, and for the 優良 grade, that MSRP is 1000nt, or USD$32.59 for 300g in competition packaging. Here is the tea directly from the Farmer's Association:
https://pinglin.tpcgo.org.tw/ch60/CH2/2549/MD/MD972045.html Now, perhaps Taiwan Tea Craft's photographed tea code is different from the tea they're selling at USD$198. It should at least be a top 特等 or 頭等1-10, which would be in the 4000-6000nt range (USD$120-200). Unfortunately, there are no Mr. Ongs (翁 or 王) listed on the the top awards page. In fact, 翁萬 only shows up for the 優良 award:
https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=8458716520837211&set=pcb.8458721244170072 There is a 王 (which could be transliterated into Ong) in the regular 頭等 page. If Taiwan Tea Craft meant that as their Mr. Ong I guess it could be reasonable, as the regular 頭等 tea is 3250nt or USD$110. But Taiwan Tea Craft's tea would have to match the Mr. 王 grade and code, which, at least in their picture, it doesn't.
If someone from Taiwan Tea Craft sees this post and wants to clarify their competition grade level and pricing, I'd be happy to delete this. But if there really is a 500% upcharge, then for those who are looking for a source for fairly priced Taiwanese competition teas, I would recommend this instead. The website can easily be run through Google Translate without any major issues:
https://www.pinglintea.com.tw/product/2022%e5%b9%b4%e6%96%87%e5%b1%b1%e5%8c%85%e7%a8%ae%e8%8c%b6%e6%af%94%e8%b3%bd%e8%8c%b6%e5%84%aa%e8%89%af%e7%8d%8e%e5%8d%8a%e6%96%a4/ This seller has a slight upcharge compared to buying from the farmer's association directly. It's base price is 1150nt, which is a 15% upcharge, but that's quite reasonable. Shipping to the States is another 800nt, so the final price would be 1950nt, or USD$63. ( EU and Canada 650nt, 700nt for the UK and Oceania. Asia 450nt, Central and South America and Africa 900nt) I'm not sure what Taiwan Tea Craft's shipping cost is, but both websites ship directly from Taiwan, so I'd imagine it would be similar. It's kind of irrelevant though, since even with free shipping their tea is USD$135 more expensive than
pinglintea.com.
Hope this information can help!

2023.06.06 18:25 FuneralShowJobe_ Just finished Doordashing across the USA for five weeks while living out of my SUV. AMA
| I’ve been traveling for over ten years on the cheap, working odd jobs in my spare time, and trying to learn more about this world through immersion. I wanted to see if I could live fully off of Doordash while I traveled the USA, so I left Birmingham, Alabama, with $100 and half a tank, and never really had more than $100 in my account the whole time. Here are the major places I popped through in order: Birmingham, Huntsville, Nashville, Louisville, Indianapolis, Chicago, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Pittsburg, Morgantown, Charleston, Johnson City, Asheville, Gatlinburg, Chattanooga, and then back to Birmingham. I worked almost every day for the lunch shift wherever I was, and most days I’d work dinner, too. Altogether, I never worked more than 40 hours, and usually only was active less than 20. The more north I went, the easier it was to make good money and work fewer hours. The only exception was Chicago, where gas was too expensive and the orders too cheap to be profitable. Ultimately, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, and Pittsburg were where money was best for the time, and Charleston, Johnson City, Asheville, Gatlinburg, and Chattanooga were tough to scrape by. I made a total of $2017, which averages over five weeks to be $403 per week. I have a 4x4 4.0 1997 Ford Explorer, which I never drove over 55 mph, and which I averaged an estimate of 15 mpg. I drove around 6,000 miles, and paid around $1,283 in gas at the $3.50 average gas price. I ate one $5-10 meal per day, and then grazed on snacks throughout. Since I had already paid up on my cellphone and car insurance (my only two recurrent payments—no health insurance, rental, debt, etc.), and I didn’t do anything that cost money (apart from student entrance fee to Carnegie Museum of Art), these include all of my expenses. 2023.06.06 18:25 pancake_lizards Next Designation
This one will be for all my Canadian colleagues, but others may have insight as well. Currently at my small (5 of us) firm I act as a wealth manager handling planning, investments and insurance. There are talks from higher ups of starting an estate division, something our region doesn't have currently, but most of us are not overly trained in multi-million dollar estate and succession planning. Currently we have an accountant that we trust to do tax planning for farm successions and high level estate planning then we take their recommendation on the life coverage required to fund the plan.
This takes me to my question, in terms of aquiring more knowledge in this planning area I am looking at two designations, MTI from CSI or the CLU from Advocis. I know CLU is more commonly recognized but in terms of actually learning about estates, trusts and taxation at death, which offers the best resources for me to come out to be able to offer these services to clients? Cost is of no issue to me as my employer pays for all education and designation fees. As a new father though, time is a factor but I noticed I would be able to apply for a exemption through an external designation for a large chunk of the coursework for the CLU which is a plus.
I'm just looking for someone who possibly does this type of planning and what is helpful for them when they started doing huge succession and estate plans where there is potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax explications if something isn't set up correctly.

2023.06.06 18:23 Starhousetech Revolutionize Your Azure Cloud Experience: 5 Essential Practices for Optimal VM Usage
| https://preview.redd.it/j8rmm72hbf4b1.png?width=848&format=png&auto=webp&s=abd4c9c434e7f7d1a9efe35cad4b01dc414ff19c Embarking on a cloud improvement project can be overwhelming, but fear not! A great starting point is to focus on optimizing your virtual machine (VM) environments. In this article, cloud consulting firm Starhouse Tech delves into five indispensable best practices for utilizing VMs on Microsoft Azure, allowing you to enhance performance, reduce costs, and streamline your cloud experience. Right-Size Your Virtual Machines for Optimal Performance and Cost Efficiency To strike the perfect balance between performance and cost, it's crucial to appropriately size your VMs. Leverage the Azure portal to determine the ideal VM size for your workloads based on CPU, memory, and storage requirements. Azure provides a handy tool, the VM sizing calculator, which offers estimates based on your workload needs. For instance, imagine you wish to host a web application necessitating 2 vCPUs, 8 GB of memory, and 50 GB of storage. Using the VM sizing calculator, it might recommend a "Standard B2s" VM with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of memory, and a maximum disk size of 32 GB. In this case, you can increase the disk size to meet your requirements by either adding a data disk or opting for a larger VM size, such as the "Standard B4ms" with 4 vCPUs, 16 GB of memory, and a maximum disk size of 64 GB. It's important to note that actual VM size may vary depending on your workload specifics. While the VM sizing calculator provides a solid starting point, conducting your own testing and validation is advisable to ensure the chosen VM size aligns with your needs. Harness the Power of Managed Disks for Enhanced Reliability and Scalability By leveraging managed disks, you can unlock a host of benefits, including improved reliability, scalability, and security compared to traditional storage accounts. Managed disks enable automatic disk management, performance scaling as data grows, and data replication for robust disaster recovery. Creating a 100 GB managed disk is a breeze. Simply follow these steps: - Head to the "Disks" section in the Azure portal and click on "Add."
- Select "Blank disk" as the source and specify the disk size (e.g., 100 GB).
- Choose the appropriate storage account type (Premium or Standard), replication options, and disk type (HDD or SSD).
- Give the disk a name and create it in the same resource group as your VM.
Once created, attach the disk to your VM by navigating to the virtual machine's "Disks" section, clicking on "Attach," and selecting the newly created disk. The use of managed disks automates disk management and replication, enhances reliability and security, and simplifies the process of attaching and detaching disks to VMs, streamlining storage resource management. Gain Insights and Ensure Optimal Performance with Monitoring and Diagnostics To monitor the health and performance of your VMs, Azure Monitor comes to the rescue, providing real-time insights into resource utilization, application performance, and other crucial metrics. Additionally, you can configure alerts to proactively identify potential issues and leverage Azure Log Analytics for diagnostics, swiftly resolving any problems that arise. Consider setting up an alert to receive notifications when VM CPU usage exceeds a certain threshold. To unlock real-time insights, follow these steps: - In the Azure portal, navigate to the virtual machine's "Monitoring" section.
- Click on "Diagnostic settings" and then select "Add diagnostic setting."
- Provide a name for the diagnostic setting, choose the VM to monitor, and select the desired metrics and logs to collect.
- Select the storage account to store the monitoring data and define the data retention policy.
- Apply the changes by clicking "Save."
By enabling monitoring and diagnostics, you can proactively keep tabs on VM health and performance, promptly resolving potential issues. Furthermore, the collected data empowers you to generate reports, visualize trends, and conduct in-depth analysis for comprehensive insights into your VMs' performance. Fortify Security with Best Practices and Robust Access Control Securing your virtual machines is of paramount importance. Azure Security Center offers a comprehensive suite of tools to implement security best practices and proactively monitor for potential threats. By leveraging Azure Active Directory, you can control VM access and bolster identity management. For example, Azure Security Center facilitates security assessments and provides recommendations such as enabling network security group (NSG) rules to restrict inbound and outbound traffic. If you intend to connect a VM to other resources in your Azure environment, a managed virtual network offers a secure and scalable networking solution. Follow these steps to create one: - Within the Azure portal, navigate to the "Virtual network" section and click on "Add."
- Assign a name to the virtual network, select the appropriate subscription and resource group, and specify the desired address space.
- Create one or more subnets within the virtual network, defining the subnet address range and name.
- Associate the virtual network with an NSG to govern inbound and outbound traffic.
- Create a network interface for your VM and link it to the virtual network and subnet you created.
By utilizing a managed virtual network, you establish a secure and isolated environment for your VM, seamlessly connecting it with other resources in your Azure setup. Additionally, the virtual network empowers you to control and manage network traffic effectively, enabling advanced networking scenarios like load balancing and VPN connectivity. Safeguard Your Virtual Machines with Regular Updates Regularly updating your VMs with the latest security patches and software updates is crucial for safeguarding against potential threats and vulnerabilities. Azure Update Management automates this process, ensuring your VMs remain up-to-date. Schedule regular updates to guarantee that your VMs always benefit from the latest security patches and software updates. When planning your public cloud environments, keep two key words in mind: "progress" and "results." By adhering to the best practices outlined above, you set the stage for a successful cloud journey, maximizing efficiency, security, and performance. Conclusion Optimizing VM usage on Microsoft Azure involves several critical considerations. By right-sizing your VMs, utilizing managed disks, enabling monitoring and diagnostics, implementing security best practices, and maintaining up-to-date VMs, you'll unlock the full potential of the Azure cloud. Harness these practices, and embark on your cloud journey with confidence, reaping the rewards of a streamlined, secure, and efficient VM environment. submitted by Starhousetech to u/Starhousetech [link] [comments] |

Who’s in the Super Mario Bros. Movie movie cast?
Who’s in the Super Mario Bros. Movie cast? It’s a star-studded cast to be sure. In addition to Chris Pratt’s Mario and Charlie Day’s Luigi, here’s who joins the ensemble:
Chris Pratt as Mario: A struggling plumber from Brooklyn, who is accidentally transported to the world of the Mushroom Kingdom and embarks on a quest to save his brother.
Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach: The ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario’s guide, mentor, and love interest.
Charlie Day as Luigi: Mario’s timid, younger fraternal twin brother and fellow plumber, who is captured by Bowser and his army.
Jack Black as Bowser: A monstrous, fire-breathing spiky-shelled turtle and the king of the Koopas, who rules the Dark Lands, steals the powerful Super Star, and plots to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom.
Keegan-Michael Key as Toad: A mushroom humanoid resident of the Mushroom Kingdom, who aspires to go on his first real adventure.
Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong: A powerful gorilla and heir to the throne of the Jungle Kingdom.
Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong: Donkey Kong’s father, who rules the Jungle Kingdom and leads the Kong Army.
Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike: Mario and Luigi’s former boss from the Wrecking Crew.
Charles Martinet, who voices Mario and Luigi in the Mario games, makes cameo appearances throughout the film.
Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek: A Koopa sorcerer and Bowser’s advisor and informant.
As mentioned, there was a pretty significant backlash to Pratt’s casting in the beginning. “There were certainly discussions of how best to voice the character,” Pratt told Yahoo Entertainment. “We tried a lot of different things and ultimately settled on the voice that you hear when you watch the movie. I’m really happy with it, and I think people are gonna really enjoy it.”
In the video games, voice actor Charles Martinet has provided the “Woo-hoos!” for Mario and his brother Luigi and fans will be pleased he makes cameos as several characters in the 2023 film, including Mario and Luigi’s father. Pratt said his inspiration for the voice of Mario was based on a few of his favorite Brooklyn people, though he fell short of naming who. “I had a few [actors] I was aiming at, but if I say them out loud, it could potentially affect people’s ability to watch the performance,” Pratt said. “So, I won’t say it, but I had a signpost.”

2023.06.06 18:22 RexYahoe Thinking about starting a bounce house business
Hello there, I'm considering starting a bounce house business, at first as a side hustle, then we'll see. They're always booked up like crazy in my area and it seems like something with a low barrier to entry. Online I was looking at mis sized commercial grade combos for around 2500. I figured if I bought a couple I could probably have them pay for themselves inside a season. I know the biggest issue would be insurance. I would be solely running this with possibly 1 other person to start with. Just wondering if people had any insights? Especially into the cost of insurance.
Thanks!

2023.06.06 18:22 chastitytumblr [28] M4M Sub/Gamer #Northern Germany looking for more than a Permanent Master*
Hey!. Im looking for something more than a couple of BDSM datings, more than sexual. Is about combining a relationship and BDSM where all are together. I dont say "boyfriend" at start because love is about to click with someone, that cost time, lucky and so. Im up to looking for a permanent Master to mix with him and complement each other, not only sexual, but our interests, hobbies, thoughts, concerns or feelings.
I'm a Spanish guy, 28yo who came to Germany to work. I left my friendships, my play partners and so. I love videogames as well as music. I play some instruments or used to play, because now the time I got is less than I want haha. Also board games, go for a walk, ride a bike and travel. I dont expect that you have the sames hobbies or interest, but this is a short window to me.
It is preferable to find a Master near to me, North Germany, Hamburg. But if not, there is no problem. I have experiences do it online, but the intention is moving to meet at least. My interests about BDSM are extensive, but the idea is giving control 24/7, lot of teasing things and some weird stuff also haha. If this sound interesting for you, please let me know here on the comments or chat with me!
Let's see if we click. I know that emotional, physical and mental aspects are important and we may not click in some of these directions. But hey, let's try :)

2023.06.06 18:20 Mister_Coggy Workshop Unit Landlord changing terms mid contract - options?
Hi All
Edit: in England
I'm hoping someone can give me some guidance
I'm 8 months into a 12 month contract for leasing a garage/workshop unit. I pay rent and electricity but lighting is free (it's very dim so as you can imagine I have the lights on when I'm there through the day)
Out of the blue I along with the other people renting units received an email today stating that (to summarise) electrical works are due to be completed in the next couple of weeks and from then onwards we'll be responsible for all electrical costs inclusive of lighting. This felt quite underhand in the way it has been handled, no formal intention or notice had been provided.
This means I now pay for lighting at the unit at a significant kwh rate and incur a standing charge (albeit very small)
When I did a tour of the site of the unit prior to signing the agreement I was told that the landlord covered the lighting costs and there was no mention of any change to this. There is nothing explicit in my contract that says one way or the other about lighting other than being responsible for 'electricity'
Are they allowed to do this? As this is a change of terms mid contract am I entitled to break of out the contract within 30 days (like you can do when sky or BT put prices up)?
Thanks in advance

2023.06.06 18:19 Lemonaids2 How do people survive here under the median income?
Everything is getting more expensive by the month. Housing cost (buying or renting) is crazy compared to median income and to almost every other country, same with groceries which are getting crazy expensive since covid. Cars are obviously expensive because of fees and taxes, Public transport is trash and practically everything else like electronics or hobby related things are more expensive since we import almost everything and have high taxes. To top it all we have high taxes (income tax, health tax, bituah leumi, VAT 17%, property tax, high taxes on cars alcohol and such) that most of the working population does not benefit from and I wont go into politics. To top it all we have mandatory army (Which is not mandatory for some people) of 2-3 years and high education isn't costly as in America but also not free as in Europe, And the school education system is not a highlight in our country. Oh, And I almost forgot about the Yearly operations/wars/terrorist attacks/rockets. Most of these are preventable, we are getting price gouged like crazy, the government literally diluted our money by printing money like crazy, they propped up the prices of everything by setting the interest rate to 0 and loans were practically free, Of course people will snatch homes even in 2M shekels when there is almost no financial repercussion of the debt. People are already calling for lowering the Interest rate which would raise inflation again. Im sick to the stomach how everything in this country is a fucking struggle, And the worst part of it is that the government is busy in dividing us against each other and we are busy for almost 30 weeks protesting both sides about some "Reform" how about we fucking reform this country for real to benefit everyone. There are ways to do it and there are countries that successfully do it.

2023.06.06 18:19 OptimalShallot7956 My job wants me to apply for Medicaid so I will stay with them as a Medicaid contractor
I'm a Medicaid waiver Supports Planner. I help people get waivers to get medical services and supplies while staying in the community. I have two Bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Behavioral Healthcare. I've worked social services for 10 years. I've been with this company for 3.5 years, and while it's brutal, it's WFH and I LOVE my team and manager.
In the past 6 months, I've moved into an apartment by myself, had to get tires changed and also just dealing with current events. I am diagnosed with bipolar 2, and my anxiety has been affecting my ability to bill hours (we bill in real time. You're expected to do billable activities 35 hours out of the week). I talked to my boss and HR. Tried EAP but the therapist fell through? Asked for accommodation but I don't even know what they could accommodate. The kicker is the health insurance they offer is "high deductible". I have to pay $3000 before the insurance covers costs. I'm a single millenial female. If I had $3000 annually to cover healthcare out of my own pocket, I'd be killing it. I need to go back to my psychiatrist. I need a therapist. I need to keep up with my reproductive health. What they don't seem to understand is that if I want to see a doctor, I need to be prepared to spend $120. ANYTHING past a general check up is billed to me. Getting psych meds sorted? $120 a month (or every 2 weeks tapering Lamictal). Gyno wants bloodwork and an ultrasound? That's a charge love. I still owe LabCorp...
I applied for my local health department and got offered a job making $4000 more and from what I can tell, kick ass health insurance. I put in my months notice and my boss totally gets it (because most people in this company are married I guess and don't even use this insurance). I get a message from HR asking for a little bit of my time.
We get on and the woman says "Let's see if you qualify for Medicaid. We don't want to lose you because you can't afford the insurance. When we last talked, you seemed happy with the job and we're happy with you. Let's see your options". She then proceeded to put my age and income in the website to look at estimates for Medicaid plans. Those premiums are also high for me and I barely qualify for the assistance because of my income.
It's more than that, though. I literally tell people to see their doctors while struggling to budget to see my own. You are telling me I might qualify for Medicaid when I literally contract with Medicaid. Now I'm sitting here feeling some type of way. I hate that I have to bargain just to try and maintain my mental health to work the jobs they want me to work.

2023.06.06 18:18 Ok_Ocelot_9661 I got soft fired for looking for another job!
I just need to rant anonymously.
So, long story short, I clearly work at a toxic company. It’s a startup and my CEO is a raging narcissist. When he didn’t take Covid seriously I was ready to leave, but couldn’t afford to. Then I got a promotion with a large pay increase - so I took some time to learn the new job duties so I could have it on my resume.
Early this yearly, I started applying for other jobs. Nothing too aggressive, just if a position or company intrigued me, I’d apply. At the same time, I was getting head hunted. All the while, I’m severely under paid doing the work of three people at my current job.
I told one of the executives who knows I’m underpaid and overworked that I’d had some recruiters reach out to me. He’s had the same thing happen, and I can tell he’s unhappy, so we’ve discussed it a bit.
I’m pretty sure he went to my CEO and basically said ‘hey, if we don’t treat her better and pay her better, we might lose her’. I’m not upset he did this, because he had good intentions. He just doesn’t know our CEO well enough to know how he would react. I do.
Well. My CEO decided that meant that since I’m unhappy, he could ‘soft fire’ me.
Essentially, I’ve been given about two months to find a new job. If, at the end of those two months, I have not found a new job, I get two weeks severance. He’s framing this as a mutual exit plan, but really he fired me.
So what was a casual job search has turned into a dire job search because I live paycheck to paycheck. I don’t have enough savings to be able to afford to not have a job. It doesn’t help that the job market is absolutely bonkers right now and a lot of people are trying to find jobs thanks to the recent massive layoffs.
Because I no longer have time to find an ideal position, I’m now also forced to give up certain things on my wish list - like a specific salary point and a remote role.
Meanwhile, he is expecting me to continue giving my job 100% while also knowing I’m having to spend 10+ hours a week applying to jobs and interviewing.
Avoid startups at all cost. In my experience, most of the CEOs are all alike - and this isn’t the first time my CEO has pulled this move with someone.
The only positive is there is a light at the end of the tunnel for me getting out of an extremely toxic work environment.
End rant.

2023.06.06 18:17 PublicThis The most valuable thing money can buy is peace of mind
I have been financially stable before. When I was younger I was able to work and didn’t have a child to raise alone. I used to have my dad to help with things like groceries and emergencies, as I helped care for him. Two years ago he fell out of his wheelchair and died and my life has been a nightmare since.
The thing that many people who have a backup support system don’t realize is how much sleep you lose when you constantly have to worry about the little things. I’m on a disability income and with the rising cost of everything, I am barely getting by.
The peace of mind that money gives is huge. I don’t even have a credit card! If something breaks, like my dishwasher or my phone, I’m completely out of luck. My kid accidentally tipped my face soap over and it all spilled out in the sink - I can’t replace that until next month.
Last winter I lost 40lbs that I didn’t really need to lose, just because I couldn’t get myself to the food bank and I always feed my kid first.
I don’t sleep. I’m all my kid has and he has my time but I can’t offer him much more than that. I lay awake and worry about the things I have no other option than to neglect, like my teeth or my car. I understand that these are first world problems and I’m so grateful for what I do have but man, sometimes I want to give up. I’m tired of cooking everything from scratch and never eating out. I feel bad that my son misses out on fun things with his friends and field trips. This isn’t the life I thought I would be living and I’m so over it
