2023.06.07 19:57 muckdog_ Travel for work / using personal car / probably need to purchase a new car.

Hello Reddit,
I have been traveling for work for roughly 2 years now. My company strongly forces that if we are within the tri-state area we should be using our personal vehicles for travel. They frown upon getting a rental vehicle unless further than the tri-state or of course when I fly. I am the lead travel guy, which means I assume the most travel. I have a 2011 Ford fusion, with almost 270,000 miles. I would say that 2-3 times a month I am using it for travel over 100 miles. We make 54 cents a mile, but this is not enough reimbursement for me to willingly want to buy a new car AND pay the insurances on it for work. In my personal life I use my car for point A-B.
There are a few reasons why I haven't just outright bought a car, and here's why:
I have a 3 week old baby girl, and my girlfriend and I have been saving for a house. Right now I have 23K in a certificate with NFCU. She has 5K in a savings account that is still being held on for anything insurance is not covering for the birth. I do not want to tap into my certificate, but it seems I am going to have to. I want to make the smartest move possible. I make roughly $1,400 Bi-Weekly and have no other income. I put $300 away each pay for bills, and give myself $200 as an allowance (Haircuts, gas money, eat out for lunch, ect.) anything left over after 2 weeks goes into the bills.
I'm worried that if I buy another shit box for 3-4K I'll be in the same boat in a few years. I also don't want to touch my savings, I have never felt this good at saving money before and really am worried about how many months it will send me back. I was wondering if I bought another car, and only used it for company travel, can I write it off as a business expense on my taxes or anything like that.
TL;DR: Car has 270K miles, use it for work. Can't run it to the ground because if it does, I won't be able to travel which is my job. Buy a new car / or buy something with a 100K less miles and hope I'm in a better spot in a few years?
Feel free to ask any questions and I'll respond as soon as I can.

2023.06.07 19:35 Mouse_Numerous Why Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger should buy Lemonade Insurance $LMND

Why Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger should buy Lemonade Insurance $LMND
First once they release such knews Short Sellers will head for the hill and cover their 28% of the float aka Auto Premium
Second the first is not the real reason. PaperBagInvestor PBI a Canadian Analyst that models Lemonade Insurance 5 yr Management Plan shows possibly a 10B market cap in 5 years. Today $LMND trades at about 1.2B market cap. Management 5 Yr Model released at Nov 2022 Investor Day was analyzed by PBI. He has been proven very asute in reviewing $LMND. His conclusion is this 5 yr Management Plan was very reasonable possibly conservative.
Lemonade Insurance $LMND business model and strategy does not rely upon any competitor getting hurt which is why Daniel Schreirber CEO emphasizes legacy competitors are just not designed for today AI, Digitial World. $LMND has been built from the ground up to provide tremenous delight, efficiency and productivity in delivering insurance products of all kinds Auto, Home, Rental, Pet, Life etc. The only insurance $LMND will not provide is Gun Insurance because it conflicts with $LMND values and culture. $LMND Lemonade Insurance maybe the lowest priced AI Digital Plaform in a trillion dollar market. $LMND his 1M fee paying customers FASTER then Spotify, Amazon or Netflix. This is very strong company to keep. If BRK Berkshire Hathaway takes a deep dive on $LMND they will find a very strong competitive advantage over peers Insurance Company some designed over 100 years ago and saddled with fat cat Insurance Brokers 40k across the USA. You know these are the people with the lowest handicaps. Paper Pushers that are just to inefficient in processing claims at legacy insurance providers. $LMND pays out claims much faster. $LMND has beat peers like ROOT $ROOT because of the POWER OF THE INSURANCE BUNDLE. $LMND Lemonade delivers a bundle of insurance products vs many peers offer just one kind of insurance. GEICO is only Car Insurance if you buy Renters insurance GEICO is just another broker. Now is the time for $BRK Warren Buffett to buy $LMND before its FLyWheel begins to move so fast it be impossible.

2023.06.07 19:33 Khunepapol Unpopular Opinion: I would rather travel on Railways/Airways rather than Road in India

Yes, the Odisha disaster happens. One reason pointed out was the lack of funding and a lot of job vacancies. I wanted to post this as a counter to thinking that the railways is dangerous.
If I had to chose to travel intracity in India, I will always chose railway/airway over roads. Even if I have a car, I'd spend money for a train ticket.
Here's why:
  1. Safety. This is an odd reason to put first because of the recent accident. However, I think airways are the safest, railways coming in second and roadways the most dangerous. People under estimate how dangerous road travel can be, especially because a lot of it turns city roads from children's cricket grounds to traffic and highway roads are accident galore. Most railway accidents happen at crossings while road accidents are so common that it doesn't become a sensational news show like a train crash.
  2. Cost. If I take into consideration fuel cost, car maintenance, possibility of accidents, and environmental damage (It's a huge hidden cost). I'd think the cheapest way to travel intracity in India is train. Buses are fine but I think the train is much more comfortable and faster. Also, toll roads are there. I'd rather pay for a train ticket once and watch all my downloaded movies.
  3. Reliability. Roads in India are highly unpredictable in quality. If I were to drive/get a driver, it's a huge responsibility to keep eyes on the road with concentration and without being tired. When it comes to a train/plane, hop in and hop off. It's infinitely better imo.
  4. Environmental Responsibility. Trains are uncontested in this category because it uses less energy to transport more people. Cars are inefficient and collectively release a lot of greenhouse gases and make India's air pollution worse. I don't want to contribute to that.
  5. Personal reasons. I get carsick easily, and trains/planes have much smoother rides. Since I don't have to worry about road quality, I can read books, watch movies or even talk on my phone without getting a headache.
Here's why I would think twice:
  1. Most destination cities have no good public transport options. So, I have to use cabs, autos or rentals. This would make it much more costly than expected. Honestly, if most destination cities had good public transport, then I would sell my car.
  2. "Freedom," I put this in quotation marks because having an option to use train doesn't make my freedom less. But, this refers to how I can't stop midway because it's a planned trip. I can't change direction instantly and go elsewhere.
I feel a bit sad to see our railways in this situations. And, I don't want negative publicity to make people opt for road transport.
Here's why you should support trains:
  1. Efficiency. As said earlier, trains are great at transporting people and things with low energy usage for how much they're carrying. A nation of our size under using railways is stupidity because trucks for freight is not economic, especially for long distances. Even for people, it's better. Railways uses less space and carries a lot more than any highway can imagine. I'd rather have railways as the blood vessels of India rather than highways.
  2. Improves AQI. This one is obvious.
  3. More support = more attention from government to improve trains. I'd hope Vande Bharat attracts customers. I don't want a situation where the Government is forced to abandon the railways. Hopefully, they make them more attractive than it is by learning from their mistake in Odisha.

Cela dure depuis dĂ©but avril.

2023.06.07 19:23 FloridaChemtrails Visiting Georgetown Next Week 6/11-6/15

I know people have posted before regarding them weather, and usually I don’t give a rainy forecast a second thought, but the owner of our Airbnb has contacted us several times regarding the rain and flooding.
She said that the road leading to the cottage is flooded so we should get an SUV so we switched our rental car and reserved a high clearance Mitsubishi Padero and felt like everything was fine.
She texted again to let us know that the guests that were coming in this week canceled and she gave them a full refund. She said that she is not being overly cautious and the rain is really bad. She has a Volkswagen Jetta and she had to park her car and walk a half mile to the cottage.
She said the cottages high and dry. It is located on the beach, but kind of up on a hill. Thoughts? Is anyone visiting or does anyone live in that area and you can give me some insight. I really don’t want to cancel or reschedule.

2023.06.07 19:21 smolgoalboy Should I rent a car while travelling in Belgium?

I am travelling to Belgium, but plan on going to a number of places that are less travelled, like smaller towns/cities (such as Gits, Ostend, up to dunkirk), to see where my parents were born, fought in the war, etc.
Are there ways to get to these small towns without renting a car? Or would it be easiest just to have my own rental while I stay up in Bruges?
Thanks in advance

2023.06.07 19:04 icrispyKing I met Ethan and Hila my first time ever in California and then my life immediately went to shit.

My sister got married in Lake Tahoe over the weekend which brought me to California/Nevada for the very first time. While I was there with my family, my other sister suggested we fly to LA so we can go to Disneyland while we were close. She has a very young daughter, and I didn't think I'd have another reason to go to Disneyland, so of course we went!
My fiancee and I watch the podcast religiously, we both worked from home ever since COVID, so we have not missed a single episode since 2020, and I've been a fan of H3 since their very early video days.
While on the plane from Reno to LAX, we, being dorks, were like "omg I wonder which building they shoot the podcast from" "omg imagine if we met them". We figured since we were in LA/Anaheim, there was a chance we'd meet someone famous, even if unlikely, but we were mainly just thinking about members of the podcast since we spend so much time watching them.
When we were in Disney we still were saying things like "if we were to meet one of them, who would you want to meet?". To which my fiancee said, Ethan and Hila. I was (I thought) being more realistic and guessed maybe we'd meet someone from the crew. Since Ethan and Hila have kids and can't get a babysitter, I didn't think there was any chance they'd leave the house ever.
Later on in the day, my sister says she has to go back to the hotel because her daughter had been up for so long and was exhausted, so my sister, brother in law, niece, mom, and dad left the park while my fiance and I stayed behind. My fiancee makes a quick plan "let's go on pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, and the bobsled ride, then decide from there". Okay plan.
Right when we get off the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, walking through the exit, I see someone who looks familiar, my fiancee and I do a triple take and then I just screen "YOOO ETHAN!!!" He says "hey, what's up man" while holding Bruce, and then Hila walks over and waves to us, which I then just scream "HILA!!!" We didn't want to bother them for pics as they were with their family and had their kids with them, but we were just absolutely starstruck. I'm not a person that even cares about celebrities at all, so anyone from the H3 podcast are honestly the only people I'd be excited to see.
We were absolutely giddy and just felt like we were dreaming.
https://imgur.com/a/4hS02On
Now this is where things went from a dream to a nightmare.
One our way back home, we ran into my sister and brother in law, taking their child to the ER because she had a high fever and they feared she was dehydrated. They wanted to take care of her before we had to be at the airport. She ended up being okay thankfully!
We decided to pull an all nighter, as we didn't get back to our hotel until 11pm, and we had to wake up at 2am to catch our flight back home. While we were up we kept taking about "what are the chances we actually met them". We were in California for just a couple days, I've never been to California before, we were getting off the right ride at the perfect time, ect. Just constantly saying things to be like "what are the odds."
At 2am, we all meet in the lobby, my partner and I have been awake since 6am the previous day, and are ready to get some sleep in the car and then the plane. While driving 70mph on the highway my brother in law sees a car parked on the side, then sees a man wind up his arm, thinks "that's weird" and then a second later a 5lb rock crashes through our rental cars windshield and hits my BIL right in the arm, severely bruising it almost instantly. We are just screaming "WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED" and he pulls onto the side of the road and calls 911. EMTs come and check us, everyone is fine for the most part except for being covered in glass and my brother in law's arm hurting. They escort us to somewhere safer, as they thought being on the shoulder of the highway was too dangerous, to which they bring us to Watts, one of the most dangerous areas in all of the LA area. Police eventually come (and are useless, ACAB) take some information from us, and send us on our way. We drive the busted car to the rental place, and get to the airport in time to catch our flight thankfully. We are all shaken up, and now I'm paranoid the plane is going to go down on our way home cuz "what else could go wrong."
https://imgur.com/a/BzTSHve https://imgur.com/a/pMYpDy5
Thankfully we arrived home safely!! But unfortunately, that's not the end of the story. Right as we are pulling into our apartment complex, I get a text from my oldest sister, saying my other sister who just got married got their rental car broken into in San Francisco, and everything in the car was taken, including her ID and wedding rings. Thankfully the asshole who broke in tossed the non valuable stuff in the road, and someone brought it into the police station, so they were able to recover their ID before catching their flight for their honeymoon. She also has insurance on their rings, but what else could possibly go wrong?
Welp I wish that was the last thing, but my fiancee and I just finished packing again in preparation to evacuate our apartment because there is a giant fire less than a mile away from our apartment that is growing rapidly and 0 percent contained.
So dear Ethan and Hila, it was great meeting you guys, but please put down the Voodoo doll of me that you've been fucking with.
TLDR; I went to California for the very first time. Repeatedly joked about meeting someone from the H3 podcast. Ran into Ethan and Hila. Got starstruck. Felt like a dream. Then someone actually tried to murder my family and I, while my other sister got her wedding rings stolen 3 days after her wedding, and I arrived home to have to immediately pack my stuff up again due to a 50 acre wildfire 1 mile away from my apartment.
Fuck California, I'm gonna stick to NJ where the worst (best) thing we have is Jimmie Lee.

2023.06.07 19:01 Technical-Canary-438 Should I do a $2,250/210 rides Uber guarantee with a Hertz rental tesla?

In Charlotte, NC. Previously rented a gas Avis Uber car and did it for 17 months so I know the pros and cons of renting vs owning a car so that part is not up for debate. Haven't done it in the last 2 months because I was tired. Working on finding my own car now. I got the following email offer: - $2,250 for 210 rides (within 30 days) Uber guarantee (already selected but deadline is Friday June 9th 5:00 pm). Selected on Wednesday June 7th and now it is saying "sign up by July 7th" - I guess the 30 days begin as soon as I register a car to my account. - Plus another $135/15 rides by Monday June 12 at 6 pm. - Plus the regular 50 rides weekend quest for $115 this weekend.
I'm thinking of taking advantage of these offers by doing a Hertz Tesla rental by this Friday June 9. Trying to get some pros and cons from the community. - so in the fine print it's saying tips are counted towards the guarantee but nothing else, so the $135/15 rides won't count, nor will surges and weekend quests? - my goal is just to get the $2,250 guarantee and just dip out. I've been surviving without a car for 2 months but that's getting old and I still haven't found the right car. As long as I cover the cost of the Tesla rental & charging (no home charging) I'll be happy, even if I just make a couple of hundred after cost (I'll be happy even if it is breakeven ultimately). At least I'll have a car for awhile and I get to test drive an EV which is what I want to buy (may not be a Tesla). - thinking about just doing very short rides around uptown Charlotte. Would be able to do 210 rides within 2 weeks I am sure. Once I finish the 210 rides can I just dip out and return the Tesla rental and still be able to get this guarantee even though I won't have an active car on my account? - what do you think my car charging cost will be for doing these short rides if I just do the bare minimum 210 $3-$5 short uptown rides? - should I get the additional $70 insurance on the Tesla? - or should I just do a regular gas car rental? - any other thoughts?

2023.06.07 18:53 photochic1124 Filtering an air duct in ceiling - exhausts dirty outdoor in to my unit

I live in a high rise and there is this air vent slot in the ceiling that exhausts outside air in to my apartment. I'm not sure what it's called or why it is here but I constantly get car exhaust smell inside and with the NE wildfires, my apartment smells like smoke today, making it impossible to be near this area in my home.
It is not controlled by my hvac and I can't turn it off.
I want to just shove some vent filters up in this slot but I'm not sure if that is wise as it's hard to see what the mechanics are up there. I already have air filters around the house.
This is a rental so I can't take anything apart. Maintenance is not interested in a remedy.
Would appreciate some diy suggestions. Thanks.

2023.06.07 18:47 r2d2nnnn 6 night trip to Cancun/Tulum. First timers.

6 night trip to Cancun/Tulum in August
Hi - We are planning a trip to Cancun/Tulum in August and had a few first timer questions. We are Indians living in the US in our 30s with no kids and are a group of 4 people, girls and boys.
  1. How safe is Cancun/Tulum right now? Have read a lot of Reddit threads about general scams but wanted to know if I’m missing anything here.
  2. We are there for 6 nights, do you suggest sticking to Cancun or split it between Cancun and Tulum? This is our first time in Mexico.
  3. We are leaning toward booking an all-inclusive resort in Cancun? Any recs?
  4. Should we get a rental car while in Cancun/Tulum? Any other options?
  5. How bad would the sargassum be in August?
Thanks!

2023.06.07 18:47 WavesofOntario Iceland travel tips

I wrote this a couple of months ago but thought it might help as peak travel season is upon us.
https://www.wavesofontario.com/blog/iceland-travel-tips

There are a couple of places in the world in my opinion, where if you woke up with no recollection of how you arrived or where you were, you might just assume you were on another planet. Iceland is one of those locations. It has always been a popular choice as a destination for landscape photographers. Over the last few years, it has also increased in popularity with general travelers.
Below are a few things I picked up along the way that may help you plan, save time, or in some cases avoid altogether.

Fuel costs

Iceland is very expensive, especially fuel. Plan ahead, and minimize your drives. If you don't need to drive back to your Air BnB/hotel, don't. Find one of the designated areas to park for a few hours and take a nap. Not just because of the fuel, but because it's more fun. You never know if you will wake up to a beautiful sunrise or if the Aurora will light up the skies.

Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

If you're only or mainly visiting Iceland to see the Aurora Borealis, you may be disappointed. I was lucky to see the Lights a couple of nights in a row, but it was at the end of the trip as many of the other nights were cloudy. Use websites like yr.no and en.vedur.is to help with hourly cloud cover, weather forecasts, and locations to potentially view the Aurora. Keep in my mind there are nights the Aurora doesn’t have a strong forecast, but can still appear as quite often the Northern Lights forecast can be off. You can also have a strong forecast for the Aurora, but cloud cover can ruin your night. I would still recommend going out though. You just never know if you find pockets of clear skies.
To give you an idea of the extent people go to in order to experience the Northern Lights- I met someone on my trip who booked two weeks in Alaska with a high likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights. The entire two weeks, despite a strong Aurora forecast, were cloudy due to a Winter Storm. Luckily she did end up seeing the Lights in Iceland.
The months you visit will also determine whether or not you get to see the Northern Lights. In summer, there are no night skies. I personally find mid-September a good time to visit. A bit less crowd and a good balance of day/night.

Travel time and distance

Iceland is small (I'm from Canada), but not that small. If you're planning to visit destinations mainly around the Golden Circle area you should be fine as the drives aren't too long. In my case, I explored all the way from the Snaefellsnes Peninsula to Vestrahorn/Stokksness area. I mainly stayed in Selfoss, which I found to be a good area as it wasn’t too far from most points of interest. But, as an example from Selfoss to Vestrahorn, it's over a 3hr drive. Vik is probably a good option too if you want to experience east Iceland a bit more. Obviously, your drive to Reykjavik and western Iceland will be longer, about an hour more from Vik to Reykjavik compared to Selfoss.
Needless to say, I barely slept the entire trip so I could make the most of my time there. As is the case with most trips where photography is involved. I was there for 8 days and slept maybe a total of 24 hours. Some nights I slept in my rental so I could be up for sunrise and reduce travel times.

Be agile

Visit the popular areas, but stop along your drives if you see something nice, and go out and explore. There are no dangerous animals in Iceland and some of the best scenery in Iceland is in random places that aren't designated tourist areas. Just be careful and try to park in a proper car stop and be mindful of private property.

Prepare to get wet

Bring a poncho or similar. Not just because of the rain/drizzle but if you're visiting the waterfalls there, Iceland can get very windy, and even without any wind the mist from the falls can get you soaked. If you're bringing an expensive camera, which should be water resistant, still take a shower cap with you.

Black sand beach (Reynisfjara)

Reynisfjara is an awesome place with its dark, black sand and alien-like sea stacks. But, it's not worth it to get so close to the water. People have died there. I saw someone fall and thought they were gone but luckily crawled back to safety (barely). I visited the place 4 times to get a certain photo because on other days the wind and/or waves were too much to handle.

Kirkjufell mountain

Kirkjufell, located in Snaefellsnes Peninsula, is a beautiful location, It’s very popular for photographers due to a very picturesque mountain complimented by a small waterfall. But again, it's not worth it to take a risk (i.e. climb). Like Reynisfjara, people have died there.

Driving visibility

One thing that I noticed about Iceland is that there are barely any trees. It actually makes the drives great as you can see the scenery around you. But if there is snowfall on a windy day, even just a bit, that snow will be blowing all over the place limiting your visibility so plan your drive and time accordingly. And, Iceland can get VERY windy.

Group tours and guides

Avoid group tours, unless of course, you’re not planning on driving. The one place I do recommend it though is the Highlands. Driving there is a pain. You need 4WD, which is standard but it will be a slow, careful "watch out for the edge" type of drive with some small rivers to cross. There are times due to the terrain you may need to deflate your tires a bit and then re-inflate them.
Good luck and safe travels. And, remember that if you don’t like the weather in Iceland, just wait 5-10 minutes!

2023.06.07 18:34 MidwestMedic18 Rental Car Accident

I’m posting this on behalf of my mom, who is not on Reddit and in her 60s. Any advice would be helpful. We are based in Minnesota
My mom rented a car through a large rental firm because the alternator went out on her car. It was a 3-day rental. She was the only authorized driver. On the second day, she was in the rental car with my 20 year old brother driving and they were sideswiped by an unlicensed uninsured motorist in a borrowed car. The rental is certainly damaged but not horribly. There’s some deep body scratches and one of the door handles was damaged. In Minnesota, insurance has to cover a rental so most people don’t do add on insurance. Both my mom and brother have full coverage through USAA.
My mom understands that her agreement with enterprise would be void due to an unauthorized driver. She is wondering if her auto insurance could also deny the claim and / or drop her. They’re good drivers. Handful of accidents. One was an animal though which is a little different.
Any help would be great. Thank you
