2023.06.07 21:08 WithinSnow The Void Realm- lore summarized

In the new awakened hero storyline, we've been told there's a disaster involving falling meteors and Hypogean infestations. In the Bards' Tale quote from Oden, it's confirmed that this is somehow related to the Void Realm. But what is the Void Realm?
Before we begin: I'm mostly referencing the chinese lore, as much have been lost in the english translation regarding the Void Realm. I'll put a * to indicate where the lore will deviate from the english one due to mistranslation.
What is the Void Realm?
When the universe was born, so were two wills. These two wills would eventually substantiate and become the primordial gods Honas: god of life and order, and Lutos: god of chaos and extinction. Over an inconceivable amount of time Honas was crafting multiple worlds using the chaos and fog of the cosmos, one of them becoming Esperia. In the meantime, Lutos was looking into the fundamental truth of the universe and deepening his understanding of its laws and limitations. He came to discover a principle called "Entropy Increase", a state of inevitable movement towards chaos and extinction, a state natural to all existence. Believing that his embodiment of chaos was the essence of the universe, Lutos sought to accelerate this process towards the ultimate void. In order to stop this, Honas crafted a divine artifact called the Astral Key, an object capable of condensing and transmuting the holder's powers into a separate dimension. At the cost of significantly draining his power, Honas used this Astral Key and imprisoned Lutos within this dimension.
Despite being locked into another dimension, Lutos was able to influence the material world to some degree. While Esperia was a place of order under the oversight of the gods, and its Hypogeans were for the most part weak and scattered, the same could not be said about other worlds. In a world where the balance of order was disrupted, it would eventually be wrecked by chaos and a Hypogean infestation. It would then experience a sort of “death” and become pure, dark matter. Taking advantage of the dying worlds, Lutos would absorb these into his own dimension to bolster his power. From this, the dimension would become known as the “Void Realm”, or the “Star Cemetery”.
The Reclaimers
After sealing Lutos away, Honas had expended most of his energy. Having entrusted the safekeeping of the Astral Key to Dura, Honas then entered a deep sleep. Aware of the existence of the Astral Key, but with no knowledge of its whereabouts, Lutos condensed his powers and manifested a powerful and sophisticated intelligence into the world: the Reclaimers. Tasked with finding and retrieving the Astral Key, Lutos dispatched Reclaimers to all nebulas.
The Reclaimers are ineffable beings above the comprehension of mortals, and one such Reclaimer called Uemiss descended upon Esperia. Here he settled in Altor, commencing his plan to build his strength on faith and usurp the pantheon. To do so, he began imparting forbidden knowledge onto its indigenous population. Most listening to his whispers were driven mad, though there were some who survived with a fragment of knowledge. Using this knowledge, the inhabitants of Altor built an utopian civilization, effectively eradicating disease and hunger. This civilization became known as the Helme civilization.
When the gods realized Uemiss’ intentions, they waged war to defend their divine authority. While they won the war, it was not without heavy losses, and Uemiss was too powerful to be outright defeated. Being forced to retreat into the ocean, Uemiss lashed out in one final, devastating blow, dragging down half the land with him into a watery grave.
The remaining people of the Helme civilization were banished to the wilderness by the gods, and the remnants of the Helme civilization destroyed in a cultural genocide. Despite this, some few retained their faith through oral tradition, hoping that one day the true god would once again return in glory.
The Zohra Nebula is swallowed by the Void Realm
At the brink of being destroyed, the Zohra Nebula’s will to survive gave birth to two sisters: Morael and Audrae. Despite their best efforts, the sisters were unable to stop the Nebula’s inevitable path towards destruction, and it was consumed by the Void Realm. This celestial mutation caused a violent chain reaction, eclipsing the stars and darkening the sky, even affecting Esperia through global natural disasters. Being closely connected to nature, the Wilders realized that a powerful extraterrestrial force was interfering with the order of the universe. In order to monitor it, they established “The Star Gazers”.
After the death of the Nebula, the sister parted ways, unable to see eye to eye. While fulfilling her duties as a god, Morael came across a familiar scene: the death of the Mirrah Nebula. Trying to fight the strange, sentient beings (likely Reclaimers) residing there, both sides sustained heavy damage. Morael was left floating through the universe until Dura found her and healed her. After which she became an esperian god.
Meanwhile during her travels, Audrae was able to touch upon a tiny corner of the fundamental truth of the universe. A shadowy abyss where the balance had been thrown off, a planetary graveyard reigned by evil. When she reunited with Morael, she recounted all she’d learned about the Void Realm at that time.
After the first Hypogean War, Morael started her investigation into the Void Realm. Proposing that neither pure order or chaos was the guiding principle of the universe, Audrae suggested they work together, to which Morael agreed.
The First Hypogean War and the creation of the Barred Gate
In the face of a potential Hypogean-caused destruction of Esperia, and knowing that with the fear and evil present in the hearts of mortals would forever nourish them, Dura decided to use the Astral Key to imprison the Hypogeans in a dimensional rift. Despite knowing that this would alert Uemiss to its location. Working together with the mortal factions of Esperia, Dura was able to imprison the Hypogeans in a dimensional rift at the foot of the Oromouth mountains, later becoming known as “The Barred Gate”. Doing so, she was finally able to bring the First Hypogean War to an end. Having expended all her powers, Dura feared Uemiss’ inevitable return and the loss of the Astral Key. In a desperate attempt to prevent this, she worked together with the gods’ smith Ansiel, and sundered the key into seven divine artifacts. These artifacts were scattered among the mortals, their creation and whereabouts kept a secret from all but Ansiel and Dura herself. After divulging her mysterious prophecy, Dura left the mountain and found a place for her eternal rest.
The remaining gods swore an oath to Dura, and would watch over the Barred Gate to ensure nothing escaped.
Oden discovers the “Margin”.
The Order of the Sun, an organization of mages dedicated to researching the lost knowledge of the Era of Man Gods, had one outstanding mage amongst their ranks: the imperial archmage Oden. Through his obsessive research on dimensional magic, Oden one day stumbled upon the Void Realm. Losing himself in some ineffable search for the truth, Oden submitted and swore fealty to the great being within. While the Void Realm is completely separate from this dimension, Oden found a liminal space between he called the “Margin”, a realm formed by the lingering dark matter of destroyed worlds. He discovered that he could siphon energy from this realm to use for his own means. However this did not go unnoticed by the Lightbearers, and Oden was tracked down and executed by the Blademaster Nuns. As a result, The Order of the Sun created a secret sister organization called The Secret Society of the Crow. Receiving covert funding from the imperial family, the Society continued its research into Dark Magic.
* Urged by ambition to seize this forbidden power, scholars of the School of the Dead fervently researched all existing records on the subject, eventually coming upon Oden. Digging up his corpse and weapon, the researchers combined necromancy and black magic, using Oden’s weapon as a core to recall his soul and resurrect him. As the three eyes of the god opened, the researchers did not see the omen for what it was, and disaster followed. His humanity eroded from death and the exposure of the Void Realm, as well as his newfound powers as a Graveborn, marked Oden as a different sort of existence. Upon awakening, he immediately opened a portal to the Margin. A tremendous lightningstrike descended from above, dragging the hapless researchers into the realm beyond to never return. Alarmed by this event, the Eldricht Council dispatched their best to seal Oden away in the dungeons below the School of the Dead, where he still wanders to this day.
Uemiss’ plan and the breach of the Barred Gate
*Khazard, the elemental guardian of water and Seirus’ predecessor, was originally under the impression that he was a Chosen One with a sacred mission. However, while traveling the oceans he kept hearing whispers speaking a different “truth”. This “truth” told him that he was nothing but an insignificant ant, that all beings lived a false lie, and that the gods above the mountains were nothing but self-righteous false gods. No longer able to look upon the world in the same way, Khazards heart began to change, and he followed the guidance of the voice to the depths of the ocean. There, amongst submerged ruins, Khazard found Uemiss. Transforming one of his tentacles into an ice serpent, the serpent coiled around Khazard, changing him into his new form. Khazard then abandoned his duties and joined forces with the Hypogeans. He sought to free the great god he feared, and to get a glimpse of the truth within the Void Realm. The serpent followed him as a companion, in addition to being Uemiss’ eyes and ears on the surface world. A plan hatched, and Khazard was posted at the Barred Gate in wait for its reopening. As a result of the spiritual loss of the Elemental Guardian of water, Seirus was born.
After the war between the Lightbearers and the Maulers, Esperia was inundated with a miasma of negative emotions. The Hypogeans behind the gate, who had been persistent in their efforts to break the seal, were strengthened by the influx of fear, hatred and despair. Since Dura’s powers were not on par with Honas’, the Gate was ultimately not as stable as the Void Realm. Seizing the opportunity, Khazard sent word to Uemiss that the time was right, and Uemiss proceeded to send a horde of his underlings to the surface. While Seirus and Gorvo were able to withstand the initial waves, they were eventually outnumbered, and had no choice but to call on assistance. The gods, now turning their attention to Altor, neglected their vigilance upon the Gate, and with Khazard’s help the Hypogeans broke through. Having failed to uphold their divine vow to Dura, the gods were demoted to demi-gods, or “celestials”.
Present day, not set on the timeline
In a small town at the outskirts of the Lightbearer Empire, a dark force had been slowly eroding the very land. Disciples of this dark force intended to use a nefarious pentagram to break the fabric of reality and usher in a malevolence from the Void Realm. In order to stop this, Lucius and Belinda teamed up with Morael, who had been suppressing the darkness up until that point, though unable to completely destroy it on her own. Although the group was able to prevent disaster, Morael pointed out that underlings of the Void Realm were still numerous in this world.
Gouldos is the minion of Uemiss. While having the same origin, Uemiss is of higher rank and power than Gouldos. Roughly two years ago, Gouldos emerged in Altor, spreading his powers and influence. A maddening, abyssal mist slowly spread across the waters, and malevolent murmurs were carried by the wind.
The hazy noise of imminent disaster reached Lorsan’s ears, though he was unable to make sense of it. It was Arden who was able to see a fragmentary silhouette amongst the wails of fear and torment among all living things. He immediately set about to call upon all beings in Esperia, in an effort to work together to dispel and purify the Chasmic Altar. After finally defeating Gouldos, the Chasmic Altar became the Cleansed Realm. (In terms of the timeline, this event is rather awkward to place.)
Heroes possibly related to this storyline.
Some heroes in-game have a relationship to the Void Realm, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them make an appearance in the new story.
Tldr:
The Void Realm is an alternative dimension where the primordial god of chaos and extinction; Lutos, is imprisoned. Using what limited influence he has on the material world, Lutos is absorbing dying worlds into his dimension to bolster his powers, and dispatching beings of great power and intelligence called Reclaimers, to all nebulas in search for the Astral Key that can free him. One such Reclaimer is Uemiss, who descended upon Esperia. Recovering his strength after the gods banished him to the depth of the ocean, Uemiss has been lying in wait in order to open the Barred Gate and seize the key, which Dura separated into seven divine artifacts right before her death.

2023.06.07 21:05 jrmberkeley95 Offline play question about Pitching being too easy

Hey, based on the posts reddit suggests to me I know this sub is primarily used by the offline shit, and this post is not about that. For anyone in here that still plays mostly offline (specifically Franchise) I wanted to ask about your experience pitching against the computer in the Show 23.
I haven't played the Show in a little while, my last game was the Show 18 on ps4 which I played for about 4 years until my ps4 broke. I pretty much exclusively play Franchise mode, and as an A's fan (rip) I mostly just tank for a few years, acquire prospects, and then start playing every game when my prospects are ready to go pro. In the Show 18 I would generally play on Hall of Fame pitching difficulty, which would often be difficult for young developing pitchers, and I would occasionally give them All Star difficulty starts if they were seriously struggling.
Now to the discussion about the Show 23. In the little experience I have so far with this game, pitching is obnoxiously easy. I am about a third of the way through my first season of playing (2025), and my group of very young pitchers is putting up something like a 2.5era (it was below 2 for a at least the first month) with an under 1 whip playing exclusively on Legend. My absolute best pitcher is Andrew Painter who just recently developed into an 82 and he is nearly untouchable on goddamn Legend. Guys like 76 overall (started the year like 73) Ken Waldichuk are easily putting up sub 2 eras with sub 1 whips. It's almost like I have to try to get hit hard, but even if I lazily throw a 91mph fast. ball middle middle the dumbass AI will probably just pop it up to 2nd. I think I am giving up a HR every other game at most. This does not seem right, and definitely does not correlate with previous iterations of the Show I have played in the past.
I am not posting this to brag in any way, I am actually upset! My team should still be developing, not winning games 2-0 80% of the time. I WANT TO LOSE. I should be getting rocked by Legend difficultly at least occasionally with a pitching staff that ranks average at best. This is pretty much the only video game I enjoy playing, but so far it's far too easy, something I wouldn't normally say about the Show. I have not experienced any similar differences in the difficulty with hitting, it is exclusively an issue with pitching.
Has anyone else experienced this in this game? If so does anyone have any tips on making pitching more realistic. I know this is kind of an odd post, and some of you are just going to say it's a damn video game why are you trying so hard to be realistic and make it harder on yourself. But the reason I have always loved the Show over games in sports I actually enjoy more as a fan like Madden or 2k is because the game is just significantly better including difficulty levels that make the game feel realistic (compared to say Madden where you have to be a bozo to lose on All Madden), but I am slowly becoming a bit frustrated at how easy pitching is in the Show 23.

2023.06.07 20:43 lady-of-hell Midnight Train: Origins [Part 3] - Funhouse

My name is Billie and I was a passenger of the Midnight Train. Last time I ended up in the nightmare of an unborn child. In this part I get to leave the train at least for a short while.
Things calmed down after Nyxia left the train – well, at least as calm as a place like this could reasonably get. I stayed close to John, with whom I got along better than I had expected, and we spent our time making plans that focused more on survival than on actually getting away. John showed me his notes, a list of rules for dealing with the train's entities, and I was confident that as long as we were together, we could survive encounters with them.
The problem was, our other goal – leaving the train despite not having a ticket – still seemed impossible. Even after days, we hadn't been able to come up with even the semblence of a plan.
"We could kill it", I suggested once. "Get to the driver's wagon and murder the damn train itself. Then we'll get out of here, right?"
"Or we end up stranded in this abyss forever", John replied, gesturing vaguely to the dark swirls of colour outside of the windows.
"A risk worth taking?"
"Absolutely not." And that was the end of this. We fell into a weird routine of spending our days in the common wagons, eating dinner in the dining wagon, and occasionally running from the threats the train threw at us. For almost an entire week, the Cinder Queen didn't show her face and everything else was easy enough to avoid. Life was almost peaceful – at least when we didn't run from faceless waiters.
And then the train reached one of its destinations, allowing us to explore the world outside.
"I still don't see what you hope to achieve with this", John complained as I dragged him through the hallway, towards the wide open doors. "I've seen people stay out too long and none of them came back alive. Running away isn't an option."
"We're not running away, we're looking for something that could get us out of here", I corrected him.
"And what, pray tell, could that be?"
"You know... I hope I'll just recognize it when I see it." With a bright smile, I tightened my grip around his wrist and started walking faster.
But before we could go outside, there was someone waiting for us next to the door. Probably the only entity I would ever be happy to see. "Hey!", I greeted the black-eyed Distributor. "I haven't even thanked you for the dagger. That thing saved my life in that nightmare world... though I kind of left it in there? Sorry if you wanted it back, but..."
The child didn't say a single word, just reached into his bag like it had done last time and pulled out a small object.
"Oh? Another present? That's really nice, buddy, thank you! What...?"
He didn't let me finish my question, just pushed the object into my hands and walked away.
"Okay then." I turned to John again and showed him my newly acquired object. "We've got a compass. Oh my god, do you think we have to go on a ship? I've seen enough water in the nightmare for the rest of my life. Did I mention that I drowned twice?"
"You're missing the obvious solution to this problem, Billie."
"Now that we have this little thing?" I waved the compass around. "Absolutely fucking not. He just gave us what we're gonna need to survive."
John sighed. "You're basing this assumption on one single event", he reminded me.
"Well, then we're gonna test this assumption right now and prove it. Like an experiment. That's how scientists do it, right?" Once again I grabbed his hand. "Come on, Kira", I told my dog and we finally crossed the threshold.
It was surreal. There was grass under my feet, an overcast sky above me, wind brushing through my hair. "I'm outside!", I exclaimed. "And there's fresh air and real light and... oh my god, I think I hear birds! Birds, John!" The euphoria was overwhelming, I couldn't stop myself from laughing and if I hadn't been holding John's hand I would have spun around like a small child.
"Don't get too excited", John replied without any enthusiasm. "We'll be here for a few hours at most."
"Buzzkill." I rolled my eyes dramatically, but still with a smile on my lips. "I'll take these few hours and I'll be fucking excited. I mean... look at that! No water! Isn't that amazing?"
"There's someone waiting for us", John pointed out instead.
Only then I took the time to really look at my surroundings. So far I had focused on what wasn't there, making sure that I wouldn't end up drowning or falling off a skyscraper again, but only now I saw it for what it was. And, well, it was a hill. We stood close to the top of a hill, the train's tracks impossibly floating behind us, and all that might have been around this hill was hidden in thick fog. Just like John had pointed out, there was a person waiting for us on the hill, a man standing right next to an empty door frame.
Now if I had one thing in the nightmare, it was that one should follow the most obvious paths in impossible places like this. Someone – something – wanted us atop this hill and if I was perfectly honest, I was kind of curious what kind of man was waiting for us up there.
"Let's go say hello then", I told John with a bright grin. The hint of a smile appeared on his lips and he didn't complain as I pulled him along again.
We reached the top of the hill in no time and the waiting man watched as we approached him. He looked perfectly normal, though he seemed to have stepped straight out of an old movie, with his hat and trenchcoat and the cigarette between his lips. "There you are", he greeted us. "I've been waiting for you."
John frowned and wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me closer. "And just how did you know we would come here?", he asked, clearly suspicious.
The man shrugged. "I think your kind calls it... instinct?"
John didn't seem relieved in the slightest. "What exactly did your instinct tell you?"
"I'm working on a case", the man in the trenchcoat answered. "Some children disappeared and they're behind this door." He pointed at the empty doorframe.
For a moment I wondered if I was back in the dreamworld. On the other hand, nobody ever said that the train stopped at ordinary places. "Okay, lost kids. Sure. Maybe this thing will help", I said, showing off my compass. "We're on a bit of a time limit here, so... let's go, Mr. Detective!" Still holding John's hand, and with Kira right by my side, I walked through the doorframe.
I didn't actually see my surroundings change. In one moment, I saw the grass of the hill on the other side, and then just a second later I was standing in a hallway. A long hallway with an atrocious red carpet, mirrors in golden frames on the walls, and warm yellow light from the circular lamps on the ceiling.
I turned my head to look at John and the Detective, only to find that the door had disappeared behind them.
In retrospect, we really deserved this for walking through strange doors without thinking.
"Did you know this would happen?", John asked our new companion urgently.
"I didn't."
Now before one of us could point out that this was absolutely not good, a voice echoed through the hallway. "Guests! Oh hello! It's been so terribly long", it said, high and shrill like fingernails on a blackboard, sending an unpleasant shiver down my spine. "Can you help me look for my three sisters? They wanted to come to me and then they got lost. Please!"
"Are those your missing kids, Mr. Detective?", I asked instead of answering the voice.
He nodded. "I assume they are."
"Okay, nice. Hey, invisible voice person! We find your sisters and you make the door appear again! Deal?"
"Oh, sure, you'll get your door, Sybille", the voice agreed. "You'll get sooo many doors..." And with that, the voice faded.
"You know... if I had a dollar for every time I ended up in a weird place with a disembodied voice talking to me...", I joked.
"You're awfully calm, considering we're stuck here", John interrupted me harshly. "You do understand that we have no way out of here and that we are going to die?"
"What? I just made a deal, didn't I? We go and find the three kids, then we can leave. And we find them with the help if this!" Once again, I presented my compass.
"Excuse me, but I don't see how knowing where north is will help us here."
"Oh come on, do you really think the Distributor gave us something useless?" I ran a hand through my hair, frustrated with his lack of understanding. "The compass will lead us to the kids. Isn't that right, Mr. Detective?"
The Detective chuckled. "And how would I know, kid?"
"Instinct, maybe?" I shrugged and turned back around. "Whatever. Come on, let's go rescue some kids!"
"I sure hope you're right", John said. "Because otherwise you doomed us all."
I was well aware of this, I just didn't allow myself to think about it. Maybe I was an optimist, maybe just insane, but I firmly believed that we would make it out of here again. And in the best case scenario, we would return with something that would help us escape the Midnight Train for good. I was unlikely, sure, but how likely was it to walk through an empty doorframe and end up in a fully furnished hallway? How likely was it to enter a train full of inhuman entities? At this point I simply considered everything to be possible.
And so we walked down the hallway, following the needle of my compass. John was right next to me, Kira and the Detective behind us, and none of us talked any more. The atmosphere was tense, despite my best attempts to stay cheerful. There was a lot on the line, after all.
I was nervous when we reached the end of the hallway and there were two identical paths to choose from, one to the left and one to the right. My compass, however, started to spin and eventually the needle settled on pointing to the left. "It works!", I exclaimed. "It works! The Distributor is the best entity ever! No offense, Mr. Detective!"
"None taken, kid", the Detective chuckled.
We continued our way until we reached a threshold and when we crossed it, we found ourselves in the most horrifying room I had ever seen. There were dolls, small porcelain dolls in elaborate dresses, filling the shelves to the point that the walls were entirely obscured. The dim lighting cast shadows on their painted faces.
And as soon as we entered, they all turned their heads in unison, focusing their lifeless eyes on us.
I grabbed John's arm and held onto him as I waited for the dolls to stand up and attack us, but they didn't move any further. All they did was stare.
"Now that was mildly unsettling", John commented, which was probably the understatement of the century. I gave him a no shit look and turned my attention back to the dolls, looking around the room.
"Fuck", I whispered when my eyes fell upon a certain spot on one of the shelves. "There's the first one."
Right there it was, hidden between the porcelain faces. Decaying flesh and crumbling bones, old clothes fused with rotten skin. They held a small doll in their frail arms, not a porcelain one but one made of fabric, holding onto it for dear life while the remains of their face was distorted with fear.
"I thought they would be... I didn't...", I stuttered as I slowly approached the child's corpse. "They must have been so scared."
John sighed. "Let's just focus on not ending like them."
"But..."
He put a hand on my shoulder. "We can't do anything for them, Billie."
I knew he was right, but it was still a lot to see a dead child right in front of me. Though I had to admit, as tragic as this was, it wasn't quite as bad as seeing Derek turn into an ash monster right in front of me.
"Hey, kid!", the Detective called and I turned around to look at him. "Your dog disappeared", he informed me matter-of-factly.
And indeed, Kira was nowhere to be seen.
"What? Where is she? Hey, you... whatever you are! Where's my dog? Where did you take her?", I screamed at the entity that was in charge of this place.
Again, the dolls snapped their heads around, staring in our direction. "You're taking to long", they spoke with the shrill voice I had heard before. "It's getting boring. Hurry, Sybille, hurry and I'll give her back to you."
"Alive and unharmed!", I demanded.
"Alive and unharmed", the dolls agreed. "Now go. One has been found, two are missing still."
With shaking hands I lifted the compass again, waited for the needle to settle for one direction and finally left the doll room, John and the Detective following right behind.
Now with a time limit looming over us, we hurried through hallway after hallway, only stopping at crossroads as we waited for the compass to adjust. Everything looked the same, always the same after every turn, red carpet and yellow light and golden framed mirrors until I thought I'd lose my mind. The mirrors were the worst part, because every now and then, I caught a movement in the corner of my eyes that didn't belong to me or my companions.
Traversing the mazelike corridors felt like an eternity and it was maddening to the point where I felt relief when we reached a new door. I threw it open and crossed the threshold quickly, only to stop dead in my movement as I took the impossible room in.
It was bottomless. Or maybe it had a bottom, I certainly wouldn't know, because finding out would mean trowing myself into the pitch black abyss. And in said abyss were platforms that were bathed in blinding lights, colourful and erratic like the ones you'd see at a carneval. It was dizzying to look at – rainbow coloured platforms floating above the pit, and a red door on the opposite side.
The compass, of course, pointed at this red door.
"You guys go first", I told my companions with a shaking voice. "You get to the next platform and I'll hand the compass over before I jump."
John raised an eyebrow. "Why..."
"Look at me!", I cut him off, gesturing at my body. My rather short, slightly overweight body. "I'm the least likely of us to make these jumps. And this little compass is the only thing that's keeping us alive, so we can't risk losing it in this pit, so... you go first. And I'll hand you the compass."
They agreed and the Detective jumped first, followed by John. The distance between the platforms wasn't all that huge, so I could carefully hand the compass to John before taking the leap. I made it – although barely – and the Detective grabbed my arm as soon as my feet touched the platform, pulling me away from the edge.
And so we crossed through the room, jumping from platform to platform, making sure the compass wouldn't be dropped. My heart was racing the entire time, so fast that I was afraid I'd just faint everytime I had to jump. The adrenaline was the only thing that kept me on my feet. With every leap I saw myself fall into the gaping abyss, and I found myself surprised whenever I landed on solid ground.
But it worked. Slowly, but with a steady pace, we advanced through the room, always towards the red door.
Until it didn't work, of course. Until we inevitably failed.
Until I failed.
We were close to the door already and I could see a small figure right beside it; relief flooded through me as I realized that the second child was right there. I had just handed the compass over and took a few steps backwards, ran towards the edge like I had done several times before, and jumped.
I could feel my feet slip the moment I leapt.
My scream cut through the absolute silence like a lightning strike. In the fracture of a second I saw myself falling, being swallowed by the void until the blinding lights were nothing but a far memory, shattering on the ground somewhere deep down in the pit where no one would ever find my broken body. I reached out, desperate to hold onto something.
My hands clung to the edge of the platform.
"Pull me up!", I screamed at the two men. "Pull me up, please, don't let me fall!"
"Give me a moment!" John sounded almost equally panicked as he fumbled to tuck the compass away.
"I don't have a moment, my fucking hands are slipping!" I was quickly losing my grip, wether because the surface was slick or because I wasn't strong enough to keep holding on. And I was nauseous, oh so very sick to my stomach as I was seconds away from falling. I desperately tried to dig my fingers into the metal, but I was barely able to hold on anymore.
Cool hands wrapped around my wrist just before I lost my grip entirely. "I've got you", John exclaimed.
"Pull me up!"
"You're heavy!"
"Fuck you!", I spat, though my shaking voice didn't carry my annoyance.
A second pair of hands grabbed my other wrist then and I turned my head slightly to look at the Detective. "Got you, kid", he reassured me.
"I take everything back, you're the best entity ever!"
The two men pulled me up then, up to the security of the platform, and as soon as I had solid ground beneath my feet, I wrapped my arms around John and hugged him tight as I tried to calm my racing heart. "Thank you", I whispered over and over again.
"You're welcome, Billie", he replied, sounding almost as out of breath as I did, while he held me and let me cry.
The final three jumps were the most terrifying thing I had ever been forced to do, but we made it with no further incident. When all three of us stood safely on the final platform, I took the compass back from John and approached the corpse that lay next to the red door. Another young child, half rotten, cowering with its back against the wall and its arms wrapped around its knees. "We found the second one!", I announced to the voice.
A high pitched giggle echoed through the air. "Too slow, Sybille! You're too slow!", it taunted.
"No!" I spun around, afraid of what I would see, and indeed, only the Detective was standing on the platform with me. "No, not him! Give him back to me!"
"You'll get him back if you hurry up", the voice replied. "I won't warn you again..."
"Okay. Okay. We'll hurry." I reached for the red door and opened it – of course it revealed yet another hallway – when the Detective touched my arm.
"You alright, kid?", he asked.
"Nope. Far from it, to be honest." I flashed a bitter smile. "Shall we?" And with that, I grabbed his hand – like I had usually done with John, and I hated how the Detective's cold skin felt so different from his – and we ran.
Another set of unchanging corridors later, the compass led us to a new door and this time all I felt was dread. After porcelain dolls and bottomless pits, I had no desire to find out what was waiting for us in the supposed last room of this maze. However, we had to hurry if we wanted John and Kira back.
Whatever I had been expecting, it certainly hadn't been a mirror maze.
I saw myself countless times, sometimes distorted, sometimes as a crystal clear reflection. I let go off the Detective's hand and stepped further into the room, closer to one of the mirrors, and looked at my compass, hoping that it would guide us through the labyrinth. But the needle was spinning, with no sign that it would settle soon.
"Fuck!", I cursed. The compass, my lifesaver, was absolutely useless in here. Fine, whatever, it was just a single room. We could manage that. "Stay close to me, Mr. ..." The words died on my tongue as I turned my head and found myself all alone.
"Too slow, Sybille", the voice taunted again. "Last chance, our you'll stay forever."
"Go fuck yourself!" I started to run. With no idea where to go, I ran straight forward until I hit a mirror, where I turned to another direction and repeated the action. After a short while though, I wasn't sure wether I was running in circles or not. Nothing changed, except for the increasing fear on my reflection's face.
Tears rose in my eyes and I tried blinking them away. I stopped in front of a mirror before choosing a new direction, staring at my crying self, when I noticed a movement in the background. I spun around, but there was no one behind me, yet when I looked back at the mirror, John was staring back at me.
"John!", I screamed and tapped against the glass. "John! Can you hear me?"
If he could, he didn't show it, but he lifted his arm and pointed left.
"Oh my god, thank you! Thank you so much!" And I ran off, into the direction he wanted me to.
He was there at the next crossroad. And the one after that. Always there, pointing me in the right direction. And I ran as fast as my legs would carry me, praying that I would make it in time.
Until I found it. The small corpse, surrounded by mirrors, curled up on the floor. I stopped in front of the body and wondered if it was wrong to feel relief at the sight. I didn't matter though. I had made it. "I found it, asshole!", I screamed at the voice. "I found your siblings, now let me and my friends go!"
"As I promised I would", the voice agreed. A cobweb of cracks spread through the mirrors around me and before I understood what was happening, they shattered all at once and glass was raining down around me. I stood between the glittering shards, and in front of me were two doors. One black, one white.
"Which one leads where?", I asked.
"The black one leads outside, where your friends are already waiting", the voice explained. "The blue-eyed man, the Detective, and the dog. All alive and well, like I promised."
"And the other?" Though I couldn't imagine anything I would choose over my friends.
"The white one leads to my hallways. You'll stay, Sybille, keep me company. And in exchange, my three siblings can go home."
"The kids are dead!", I replied.
"I can bring them back", the voice informed me. "I'm a god in these corridors, I can bring them back to life, it wouldn't be a challenge." It giggled. "Think about it, Sybille. Three children, returned to their parents... the Detective would be so happy, wouldn't he? To have a happy ending for his case. And what difference would it make for you, you're stuck either way. Nothing in my corridors would try to kill you. Not like the Midnight Train."
And it was right, maybe it made no difference which prison I'd stay in. I could be a hero. Three lives for one – it should be an easy choice, really. But it would also mean giving up the tiny sliver of hope I still had, that I could find a way to leave the Midnight Train and go home.
I looked at the white door for a moment, then took a few steps forward. "I'm sorry, asshole", I said to the voice. "That's not the kind of person I am."
And so I stepped through the black door, only to find myself on top of the hill again, with John, Kira, and the Detective already waiting for me.
Kira tackled me immediately and I let her, combed my fingers through her fur and reassured her that everything was alright, I was back and we were okay. The next thing I did was throw myself at John and hug him. "I'm so sorry!", I sobbed into his shoulder. "You saved me twice back there, I owe you my life."
"It's okay, Billie", he promised me. "And we're never going outside again."
"Deal!" I let go off him and turned to the Detective. "I'm sorry about the kids."
He just shrugged and took a drag of his cigarette – which was still the same length as it had been when John and I had arrived. "Not your fault, kid."
I didn't correct him.
"We should go back to the train", John said. "Before it drives off without us."
I nodded and grabbed his hand, weirdly anxious that he would just vanish again, even though we had left the corridors behind. Kira was by my side, as always, but what was curious was the fact that the Detective followed us too. "You're coming along?", I asked.
"My case is closed", he answered, as if that explained anything. I didn't question it any further.
The Conductor was waiting for us when we arrived back at the train. "Welcome aboard, sir", he greeted the Detective politely, before turning to us. "Welcome back, sir, ma'am. I hope you had a pleasant trip."
"Sure. Whatever." Now that the adrenaline was leaving my body, I felt nothing but exhausted. I leaned my head against John's shoulder as we walked down the hall, towards our compartments. Although I had never expected to feel this way, I was happy to be back in the train. My resolve to escape the Midnight Train, however, had only hardened. If only to justify my decision back in the corridors.
This is all for now, I guess. Next time, everything goes to shit and more decisions are made.
Until then, be careful which doors you open.
You never know where they lead.

2023.06.07 20:27 ArchiveSlave Commander's Rounds Gaiden Entry 116.5: A Royal Prerogative

(All my stuff is here)
Princess Royal looked at the timetable that the commander had passed on to the ex-rebel Kansen from the office of the Royal Prime Minister. As far as these things went, it wouldn’t be too many more months before the new base in the Western Mediterranean would be brought on line, and they would be leaving Azur Lane’s Pacific HQ for a new assignment involving keeping watch on the Suez Canal and the Dardanelles. She would be glad to shed the maid outfit she had been forced to wear for these months, and, well, there was someone who was also excited.
“Haha, looks like she’s done it- A real base all to ourselves.” Florida smiled as she walked along the edge of a fountain in the main square. “No more hiding in some river junction, lots of actual support this time, and, most importantly of all?” She looked right at Princess Royal with a smile. “All the gorgeous Atlantic Kansen you can look at. They should be calling it a vacation, not a redeployment!”
Princess Royal huffed. “I shouldn’t have to remind you that we’re being sent there to look after two of the world’s most important waterways. There will be little time for the festival of ogling that you will want to enmesh yourself in as soon as you arrive. Even if we’re not covering an ocean, there’s still going to be plenty of work for us to do when we get there and afterwards.”
Florida giggled. “Hey now, don’t rain on my parade. I’d tell you to take that stick out of your ass, but you’re probably too afraid of liking it to put one in there.”
The battlecruiser’s eyebrow twitched. “Would you mind spouting such things in another time and place?”
The battleship put on a sly grin. “Oh, right… You prefer Tiger to do that kind of thing, I guess.”
Princess Royal blushed and gave Florida a furtive, covert nudge, just enough of one to make it look like the dreadnought battleship just naturally lost her balance. Florida toppled back into the water with a splash, and as Princess Royal left, she heard the battleship shout “Joke’s on you, I’m into this!”
Princess Royal sighed a little. Some of these other ships were utterly incorrigible. Were they not taught manners? Did their country even have any to begin with? Did they used to have them and give them up as too much of a bother?
Those would be questions for later as she went to clean up Yuubari’s lab, an assignment that perpetually annoyed her due to the wide variety of… substances… That could end up being spilled there. She was never quite sure what they were even working on in there, and she never really felt compelled to ask, either from within or without.
Once she was inside, she saw that Delaware and Dr. Anzeel were talking with each other.
“I don’t think any of us questioned human genius.” Delaware began. “…However, we did have something to say about how it was applied, especially since humans seemed to think that we inherently owed them something for forcing us into existence.”
Dr. Anzeel nodded. “Well, some might say that what you just said is a fancy way of saying “I didn’t ask to be born!” Or something like that, but you didn’t exactly give us much time to make amends.”
“I think that we believed at the start that giving humans a chance to make amends would mean giving them another chance to betray us.” Delaware looked Dr. Anzeel right in the eyes. “And given what happened to you, I would hope you could understand.”
“Perhaps.” Dr. Anzeel replied, and then smiled. “But here I am, aren’t I? But the fact of the matter is, even if I despised humanity, I still have work to do for my girls. If the Sirens gain full control, humans aren’t the only ones who are going to suffer. After talking to the others, the world the Sirens want is one dominated by a war without end. It’s… The kind of world where Enterprise would suffer most, to say nothing of those other girls who want to enjoy this world that they’ve been born into.”
Princess Royal listened as she continued cleaning up, and Delaware still had more to say. “So you still believe that there is a world worth expending your efforts for?”
“What was done to me and was done to you long ago was done by some people who allowed themselves to be corrupted by power.” She said. “But for most people, and I think most Kansen, the most they want to do is live their lives. Humans want to be able to go to the beach again without worrying about black ships turning up on the horizon, I would say. And I think that you and the others would like to be left alone without thinking that anyone was coming to get you.”
“Perhaps.” She shrugged. “Still, we do have to do our penance, it seems, and thankfully it’s being administered by someone we trust. Besides, our new assignment will leave me with plenty of opportunities to show my own worth. The defenses of the Dardanelles and Suez Canal are atrocious, and since I’ll have a proper lab and proper resources, I’ll make sure that even Poseidon wouldn’t be able to force the straits.”
Dr. Anzeel started putting some of her equipment away. “You sound confident.”
Delaware replied. “It’s the paradox of military matters. You can’t have success without confidence, and you can’t necessarily have confidence without success. Anyway, I’ve got my own work to do, so I will be leaving.”
After Delaware left, Dr. Anzeel took a look at Princess Royal. “Ah, hello there. Sorry I didn’t see you before, I was talking with your colleague.”
Princess Royal hmphed. “I feel like I should be taking umbrage at the implication that I was beneath your notice before I came in to clean. I can only hope there’s nothing too exotic to mop up.”
“Nothing out of the ordinary this time.” She said. “Purifier wasn’t messing with her booster fuel this time, so you don’t have to worry about your water catching on fire.”
“I will believe that this is a distinct possibility.” She said, and got to work. “Doctor, we kansen who followed Erin meant to live free, but became paranoid about losing our liberty to the point where we launched ourselves into battle all the same. But now you say you wish for us to be able to contemplate things other than the battles we were made for?”
“If you would like.” The doctor said. “Has there been something on your mind?”
“Of course, my mind is not empty of musings.” She said. “Rather, it’s about…”
“Princess Royal is always troubled by something.” Said Tiger as she came down into the lab. “Matters great and small, but I think she would be better off if she was willing to accept the kind of relief that others, like me, can give.”
Princess Royal huffed. “Now, what is it that has brought you down here, Tiger? Surely you have some other purpose here than teasing me.”
“Hardly.” She said, giving Princess Royal a hug from behind, causing the other battlecruiser to squirm indignantly. “I just haven’t seen you all day. Or really much of yesterday either, and I was wondering if something had befallen you. Especially since you know that you can just leave it to me to make everything feel good again.”
The Royal battlecruiser pouted as she was released by her larger companion, and sighed. “Do not think I am unaware of your potential methods, but for now I am busy. I have no doubt we will run into each other when the day is done- you seem to have a knack for popping into my life.”
“Of course~” She also took a look at Dr. Anzeel. “And there’s our lovely doctor, too. But I suppose I’ll just leave the two of you to talk for now- I was just making sure our princess hadn’t managed to over-grump herself and pull something.”
And then Tiger left without a care in the world.
Dr. Anzeel talked immediately. “I haven’t known her for long, but would you say that she’s always like this?”
Princess Royal sighed. “Well, if it’s something you must know, she is, indeed, like this most of the time. She can’t help teasing others with her words and body, and she is utterly relentless about it. It’s almost mystifying that there can be one so openly lascivious in our Royal Navy. Duke of York excepted, naturally.”
Dr. Anzeel held her tongue. Though she hadn’t met Implacable personally, she had heard some stories. “It is surprising, I must admit. The most you usually get from a royal is some kind of playful teasing, as I’ve seen it. I can see why it exasperates you.”
Princess Royal hmphed. “I’m only deigning to speak to you on this matter because, among all of the humans here, you are the one who most knows what it’s like to be very suddenly betrayed, so we have some small measure of common ground. Frankly, I am confused as to why you even shoes to work for this commander in the first place.”
“Considering that I was taken away from Enterprise and the others by the military, yes, I don’t have any love for soldiers. I still don’t, in fact. The commander has made some promises, of course, but it won’t be until the end of the war that they’re fulfilled or not.” She finished putting away some lab instruments. “However, the commander lets me be with my girls without any restrictions or conditions, plus he gave me the choice in the first place. Even if I don’t completely trust him yet, I don’t fully believe he’ll disappoint me either.” She smiled. “I guess you could say I’m helping him win because I’m interested in seeing his true colors.”
Princess Royal threw up her hands. “I guess that’s how it’s going to be, then. I shall not witness it, however, as it seems that in a few months at most I and the rest of our band are being shipped off to the Mediterranean to overlook the Dardanelles and Suez and provide some sort of extra comfort to the people of the Hellenic Republic by our presence. I haven’t the slightest idea what we might actually do other than sunbathe and listen to the seabirds, but Iron Duke seems to see it as important.”
“It’s better than being a prisoner, though, isn’t it?”
“Infinitely.” Princess Royal said. “…But now I shall have to continue to work with that enthusiastic strumpet at all times and at all places. While normally I would relish showing humans what it truly means to master the waves, I have also been given time to contemplate things, and I have certain feelings that I find difficult to admit, but I feel as though I will burst if I do not.”
Dr. Anzeel started some coffee. “It has something to do with Tiger, doesn’t it?”
Princess Royal put on a blush. “What it’s about has nothing to do with you, all that matters is that there is a matter in the first place.”
“I see.” She said. “…You know, your highness, I never had the chance to say goodbye to Enterprise or the others before they took me away, so if there’s something you want to clear up, the best time is always now. And if you can’t do it now, you should do it as quickly as you can.”
“I do have some more cleaning to do.” She went on. “First here, and then in that commander’s house. It seems odd, but I guess I shall have to set some time in order to clear the air, won’t I?”
“You know, you could just tell me that this is about Tiger.” She said.
“Urgh.” Went Princess Royal. “Fine, it has to do with Tiger. I’ve been playing too nice with her, and I believe it’s long past time for me to tell her exactly what I think of her and her various and persistent provocations. It’s not something I mean to put off any longer- By this evening at the latest she shall know exactly what is on my mind and she’s going to have to deal with it.”
Dr. Anzeel nodded. “Sounds like she’s in for a surprise.” Dr. Anzeel began pouring a cup for herself. “Want some coffee?”
Princess Royal paused. “Though I won’t go so far as to curse it as “bitter bean broth” like Settsu does, I am, and shall always remain, entirely a tea person.”
Dr. Anzeel smiled. “Can’t say I didn’t ask.”
-----------
Princess Royal decided that the best way to tell Tiger what she had in mind was to be somewhere that no one could hear them, at a time when most people decided to mind their own business. She ask one particular lavender-haired Royal destroyer what the best place to tell someone something personal and private was, and she got the response of “Under a legendary tree, or on a rooftop.”
And since she didn’t know of any legendary trees on the premises, she opted for the rooftop of the guest housing. She stood there, finishing up at least two cups of tea as she waited for Tiger to show herself.
It was right after Tiger arrived that she spoke first. “Ooooh, I guess you have something special to tell me this time.”
Princess Royal stopped dead in her tracks. “How would you figure such a thing?”
“Easy enough, I would say.” She said. “You don’t often go out of your way to pay me a social call- most of the time we just seem to end up together by some circumstance or another, each and every time. Not that I mind, of course. I’ve never minded having you around to play with~”
“And that is precisely the thing that the two of us need to talk about this very instant. After all, news has come to me that we’re going to be having a proper base of our own not long from now in military terms, so I thought it would be the right and proper time to clear the air before we have to start working together in real earnest.” She stood up straight. “Miss Tiger, I am going to be complete with you this instant so that there is not even the slightest bit of confusion later on.”
Tiger put on a wide smile, her orange eyes seeming to brighten. “Oh? Well, let’s just hear it. After all, I’m the only one here, so your little secrets are safe with me~”
Princess Royal huffed. “Miss Tiger, you, and I mean this completely, are an uncouth harlot who can hardly open your mouth without letting loose a tide of unrestrained innuendo. Half of your speech and mannerisms seem to be guided by the thirsts of your impossibly needy loins at all times on all days, and it is only by some great providence or miracle that you have not yet driven me insensible.” Princess Royal turned her head to the side. “…However, at the same time, I also wish to kiss you.”
This was the first time that Tiger seemed even slightly taken aback by something she said, but Tiger regained her smile quickly enough. The battlecruiser had a small chuckle. “Oh ho? Now, this is quite a development. Go on, though you probably meant to.”
Princess Royal pouted. “…As maddening as you are, I have also contemplated what it might be like if you were gone, for one reason or another, and as much there are times when you make me wish to shout or make some other indication of my displeasure. I do not believe that I would be well if you were to be out of my life. Everything would feel wrong and bland if you were to be forever absent, and since it seems I cannot do without you…” She looked Tiger right in the eyes. “…The least I can do is be with you for as long as this all lasts.”
There was a moment of silence, and then Tiger said something. “Those are a bunch of pretty words, well suited to coming from a pretty mouth. But… I wonder what you plan to actually do, hm?”
Princess Royal blushed a little. “Now, what do you mean?”
“Poetry is just vanity on its own, darling~” She began. “You can talk and talk all you like, but…” The battlecruiser walked towards Princess Royal with a sway of her hips. “But you’ve known me for some time when we’ve both been like this, and I want to know if you’re willing to say with your hands what you’ll say with your words. Both of us are deathly tired of speeches…” She put her hand under Princess Royal’s chin and tilted her head up slightly. “…I love that you never do things by half-measures, but if you want to have me, then you can’t merely tell me, you’ll have to take me. So, Princess Royal, will you do this, or suddenly become shy and retire at the last and crucial moment? Show me~”
Princess Royal shuddered as she was forced to look right into Tiger’s enchanting orange eyes. The tall, buxom beauty was a physical marvel- Princess Royal had to admit that to herself. But she was being given a chance to finally have one over on the woman, so she took it. She seized Tiger by her coat and tugged her forward, planting her own lips on the battlecruiser’s, and not just for something quick- she was in it for the duration to kiss Tiger as long as she could stand.
As it turned out, Tiger could stand quite a bit, and it was a long time until the pair separated.
After they separated, Tiger touched her forehead to Princess Royal’s, and put her arms around the shorter girl’s shoulders. “Heh… Of all the cute girls I could find, I found the one who just finds it so hard to say “I love you”. Well, we’ll just have to fix that, won’t we?”
Princess Royal blushed and pouted. “Hmph. All I can really hope is that some good behavior might rub off on you over time.”
Tiger chuckled. “Darling… That’s going to take a whole lot of rubbing. And what if I don’t change the way you want me to, hm? What will you do then, if this Tiger doesn’t change her stripes.”
Princess Royal’s pout disappeared, but her blush stayed. “…I wouldn’t recognize you if you were too different, and I believe the Tiger I feel this way about is the one right in front of me. If it is so beyond you to change, then don’t. This is how I will have you, whether you make yourself a little more presentable or not.”
The voluptuous battlecruiser giggled. “…Well, why don’t we stay overnight to see how we get along in private. My bed always has room for two~”
Princess Royal’s pout returned. “Only if you find it in yourself to not hog the covers.”
“Hehe, All right~”
-------------
Dido was anxious. The commander had sent her to find out why Princess Royal and Tiger were late to their cleaning duties, and so she had to navigate the supervised guest housing where the formerly rebel kansen were being kept until it was time to send them on their way.
Dido hurried along the corridors, stepping lightly to make sure that she didn’t wake up anyone who was still asleep- Agincourt could get pretty testy about that sort of thing. She knocked on what should have been Princess Royal’s room. She then nervously dared to knock again.
So much for that.
She then worked up the nerve to walk over to Tiger’s room. While she wasn’t as liable to complain about being woken up as Princess Royal, Tiger made her quiver for different reasons. Her heart briefly felt like it jumped into her throat before she knocked on the door.
“Oh… who has come calling on this good morning?” There was Tiger’s unmistakable voice.
“Um, it’s me, Dido, and the master was wondering why you’re late today…. May I come in?”
Tiger spoke up. “Why, you certainly can, darling~”
“She most certainly can not!” There was Princess Royal’s voice. “I’m indecent!”
Tiger giggled. “No, I’m indecent, you are merely unclothed.”
Dido tapped the door again. “So…”
Tiger spoke up. “All right, just wait five minutes for her highness to make herself presentable.”
Dido did what she was told.
After a few minutes, there was the sound of a click, accompanied by Tiger’s sultry voice. “Come on in~”
Dido blushed as she stepped in.
Tiger was cooking a full breakfast, only she was dressed in a translucent, flame-orange nightgown that allowed Dido to see the racy black underwear that was tasked with handling the battlecruiser’s abundant figure. Dido peeked over to the bedroom to see Princess Royal sitting in bed, with her usual level of grumpiness and wearing a set of elaborate red pajamas.
Dido blushed “O-Oh… You two had… A special moment…”
Tiger smiled. “You see, it’s not a problem. When outside of battle, this girl is a harmless kitten.” As if to emphasize that, Tiger began stroking the top of Dido’s head.
The maid blushed immediately. “Uwaaa…”
Princess Royal sighed. “Be that as it may, I hope you may find some diplomatic way to inform the commander of our tardiness. You are not to say you found us together in the altogether, or some other such scandalous thing.”
Dido gave a dutiful nod. “Ah… Yes…” She looked at Tiger and everything going on in the kitchen. “Is there anything I can help you with while I’m here? It’ll help you get ready faster, I think.”
Tiger shook her head. “I’m fine here, but I think our princess could stand being spoiled by a cute maid. Why don’t you go wait on her hand and foot until breakfast is ready.” She chuckled. “And besides, the faster you help us get ready, the sooner you’ll get to be in charge of us~”
Princess Royal crossed her arms. “I don’t know how much of an incentive that is. You know how domineering she isn’t.”
Tiger went back to breakfast. “Oh, she’s quite good at taking charge, under the right circumstances.”
Dido squeaked and went over to Princess Royal. “Do you need anything?”
Princess Royal looked up for a moment. “…I think I would like you to at least do my braid. I don’t need to explain how it works or looks, nor should I have to. I am sure that you’re observant.”
Dido sat down on the bed, and took Princess Royal’s hair into her nimble hands, and immediately got to work. The battlecruiser closed her eyes as she was taken care of, and Dido could tell that Princess Royal was in a state where she was feeling that something was right with the world. Responding to this, she took the time to get it just right. “I know it may be beyond me to ask, but I guess you will stop fighting as much?”
Tiger chuckled. “Oh, dear… It was never anything for you to worry about, and probably even less so now. You can just say that we decided to be honest with each other and came to an understanding.”
Princess Royal blushed a little at that. “Please don’t try to have that sort of way with words. The maid is already as red as she can manage.”
Dido did indeed blush, and did want to bury her face in Princess Royal’s hair. “W-Well, I’m sure the commander would be happy to know that but… Ah… I guess you’re not telling him the details.”
Tiger came in with breakfast, walking into the bedroom with a sway to her hips. “Of course- That’ll be our little secret between the two of us. Of course, if you’d like to join in and learn about that yourself…”
Princess Royal flushed completely red. “T-Tiger! Not in front of the help!” She huffed. “It’s obvious that last night wasn’t enough, and that you need some further action.”
Tiger chuckled, and set out breakfast. She had always teased Princess Royal, and she had always responded- But now Princess Royal was truly hers to tease, and Princess Royal was able to properly express herself- even if it was behind closed doors.

2023.06.07 20:12 boomgottem Super Mega Everything (smarter post)

I don’t know about you all, but Super Mega Baseball is one of the last remaining sports games for me that just feels right. NBA 2k, fifa, madden, NHL, all feel dependent on phony animations and bullshit cheese these days. This game is pure skill, if you lose it’s on YOU, not the game. I would love a metal head spin-off on any of these.

2023.06.07 20:04 blue-green-blue Red Flags I Ignored: Psychological Abuse

Psychological abuse is the most insidious type of abuse, in my opinion. My abuser did awful, traumatising things to me, but he relied on manipulating the situation to make himself the good guy and/or the victim until I was completely blind to how much I was letting slide. He rarely yelled or did anything so explicitly abusive that I could identify that what was happening was wrong. And it worked for him! It put me into a massive fog that completely skewed my reality and blinded me to how terribly I was being treated.
Even though I thought things were fine and healthy (until I finally trusted my own reality enough), I was constantly looking up questions about my relationship to see if [X] was normal, then telling myself I was just being dramatic. Thought this list might be useful for anyone in a similar situation.
Here are some signs I ignored that I was in a psychologically abusive relationship:
There's more, I'm sure, but I really want more people to be aware that there's abuse like this, that just slips under the radar through an abuser's intense gaslighting, self-victimisation, and the ability to twist a situation to always end up being "the good guy". I wish I'd known back then that I wasn't going crazy or being an asshole or ruining our relationship, and I desperately wish I'd known that the feelings I was having and the things I was noticing were signs that someone was messing with my mind.

2023.06.07 19:50 yamayeeter With crossplay being added, I hope to see co-op h2h being more popular

A game mode that doesn't get a lot of love is the co-op 2v2 and 3v3 online modes whether that would be in superstar ko or exhibition. Queue times are atrocious partly due to only connecting with the same console and partly due to the mode not being too popular.
If you haven't tried, I'm not a baseball fan, but I thoroughly enjoy the co-op mode in MLB The Show with friends. I'm not sure if it's a popular mode in the community, but the fact that it's crossplay and easy to set up (setting up co-op h2h in madden isnt the easiest to find), queue times are pretty fast, and being in a team format makes it all the more fun.
Hope to see you all out there!

2023.06.07 19:08 DaRealWiseGuy Will Madden 24 be free for season ticket holders again?

Last year Madden 23 was free for STH, will it be happening again? I feel like this was such a great add. With the uncertainty of this game being good or just another copy and paste. I’d like to think the NFL and Madden will do this again.

2023.06.07 18:51 MST_ChiefsFan Do not pre-order Madden 24

Considering EA has an exclusive deal with the NFL, the only way we can incentivize EA to make *real improvements to the game that we've been asking for is to, simply, not buy the game.
At the very least, DO NOT PRE-ORDER. If their pre-order sales are less than Madden 23, that's an actual red flag for them.
Remember the insane amount of bugs at Madden 23 launch? I'm begging you guys, just wait a month or so after launch to buy the game. You miss out on, what, a $10 discount? Suck it up.
If you *really want to hit EA where it hurts, stop watching Madden content on YouTube and Twitch. All of it, from every Madden creator. They'll pivot to another game, they'll be fine. But those people have a little bit of *actual influence with Madden. If Madden becomes irrelevant online, and if the streamers all tell Madden that their Madden content is so unpopular that they won't be streaming Madden anymore, then MAYBE EA will do something about it.
We, the consumer, have more power than we realize. We just have to actually exercise that power.
