Recap of last episode
Theme Song Plays
Deliberations: Akira is astonished by her performance, even saying to herself "Where did that come from?". The Blue Team and Red Team unite over Martina's elimination as both were sick of her awful work ethic and inconsistency. Kelsie and Maddie are saddened by Candace's elimination. Lauryn appears dehydrated and has a sudden panic attack and is rushed to the hospital.
Challenge: When the chefs come downstairs, Gordon reminds them that Lauryn is in the hospital. Since Lauryn wasn't present, Bryce had to cook 2 dishes for the challenge. The chefs would have to get creative with lamb. These dishes would be judged by Anthony Bourdain, David Chang, and Emeril Lagasse. Dishes will be rated by the judges out of 4.
First Pairing: Trish and Bryce.

Red Team wins.
Reward: The Red Team are brought on a Yacht with Gordon.
Punishment: The Blue Team has to wash dishes and clean the outside of Hell's Kitchen.
Before service: Lauryn returns from the hospital just in time for service. The Blue Team are extra motivated after the punishment.
During service: The Blue Team gets off to a hot start, with Trish unexpectedly becoming a leader. Giancarlo puts out a perfect risotto and Glenn puts out beautifully cooked salmon. Unfortunately, Dylan tanked on garnish, and was kicked out after burning lettuce. The Red Team, however, gets off to such a poor start, Gordon asks if their minds are still on the yacht. Kelsie makes her first major mistake in Hell's Kitchen by sending "rubber" scallops and a crunchy risotto. She is kicked out for the first time individually. Akira, on the other hand, takes control of the Red kitchen, and doesn't make a single mistake all service. The Blue Team were smooth sailing for the rest of the service, with the only mistakes being from Trish, who also got kicked out, and James, who rebounded quickly. They complete service for the second time in a row. The Red Team would have to shut down service after not a single entrée went out for 10 minutes straight. The Red Team are declared losers by a mile, and come up with 2 nominees.
Nominations: The Red Team are given two announcers for nominees, Akira and Bryce. Akira nominated Kelsie for the bad scallops and risotto. Bryce nominated Bella for lacking communication. Gordon is confused by Bella's nomination and her nomination is voided. He calls forward Kelsie and Lauryn, who despite her illness earlier, didn't bounce back and had her worst service yet. He calls up Kelsie, but sends her back in line. He also sends Lauryn back in line, saying she could bounce back. He then eliminates Dylan from the winning Blue Team for having a horrible attitude, no fight back, zero leadership qualities, and overall being a crap cook.
Gordon's comment: "Dylan was a villain, who thought he'd make a killing. But the only thing he killed was any chance of winning Hell's Kitchen."

2023.06.08 00:40 TehBaconBrawlerZ Periodic UHC Season 5: Boron - Episode 3

Hello Everyone! Welcome to Periodic UHC Season 5, Boron!

This UHC is organized by TehBaconBrawlerZ, and in this season we will be doing a Rigged Team of 3 using the following scenarios:

Scenarios:

Anti-Boronics: Boronic Acid is used for tons of of Pharmaceutical Methods in the real world, and the same is true in the game! Combining 4 Glass, 2 Redstone, 1 Diamond, a Golden Apple and a Bottle, you can create a Tier 1 Anti-Boronic, and using the same craft again substituting the bottle for the Tier 1 Potion, will give you a Tier 2 Anti-Boronic. Upon drinking either tier, you will take damage and gain different effects, based on the Tier of Potion: -Tier 1 Potion - 1.5 Hearts of Damage but gains Strength and Haste 1 for 30 Seconds. -Tier 2 Potiom - 3.5 Hearts of Damage but gains Strength 2 for 20 Seconds and Speed 1 for 15 seconds.
Boronic Armor: Boron is a key component in types of Armor, such as Bulletproof Vests and Tank Armor. Because of this, players are unable to enchant their equipment past basic level enchantments provided by the enchanting table (no anvils). Instead, in order to make higher tier gear, they have to combine the piece of equipment with different items (Iron, Gold, Diamonds, Feathers, Arrows and Apples). Inspiration was taken from (and given permission by) Elunial, organizer of "The Saga"

2023.06.08 00:36 Stunning_Structure73 The TV Show LOST. For People Who Haven't Seen It, This Is A Spoiler Post (Feel Free To Read This, And If Not, I Do Recommend Watching It)

I posted this a while ago, and am posting it again, with added thoughts. I love this show, and have seen it 5 or 6 times through. It made a big impact on me, not just for the entertainment and mystery value, but spiritually as well. I have become consumed in the NDE world, and this is the only sub I go to now in terms of spirituality. I am a believer, and it just feels right to me. I have read a lot of mystical accounts as well.
I started thinking of the show again after getting into NDEs, and wanted to draw parallels with all the accounts I read. Now, these are obviously my subjective thoughts, and my own suppositions that the show contains elements drawn from NDE accounts, and that the creators of the show might possibly have done this in their knowledge of them as well. So a lot of this might be a stretch and I might be overthinking a lot of these things. And for anyone who has seen the show, keep in mind it was also lacking in some areas, maybe not well thought out or not allowed time to expand on things due to network demands, etc. Also kind of cheesy at times, let’s face it.
Anyway, here are my observations relating anything gleaned from NDEs/STEs/mystical, etc. with the show, for whatever it’s worth. So in no particular order:
The airline was called Oceanic (oneness, limitless, unbounded), a word and descriptive words thereof mentioned in many accounts
“You’re not done yet/you need to go back” quoted frequently in accounts was also used in the show in relation to ‘’The Island isn’t done with you yet” in that they still needed to perform some function or mission
The phrase that was spoken on the Island ‘’Welcome back to the land of the living’’ stood out for some reason, so I had to look it up, and one thing among a few that I found is it’s used in the bible to refer to a designated territory (Israel) given by God. So from that, in terms of the LOST in show universe, I could suppose maybe the Island was created purposely for all those specific people who came there and then it changed later on for the people chosen to go there as a big testing ground (via Jacob). Meh, who knows.
Course-correction by the universe. From the show, it’s the universe and the Island that course corrects, making sure whatever was supposed to happen, happened.
One image used throughout accounts is of a door into the light, hence the final scene of the show.
The use of the phrase ‘let go’ or ‘letting go’ during the show to the characters, which is something many experiencers have learned to do and work on after their NDEs.
In some NDE and mystical accounts we get told of the realization of the cosmic joke, suddenly understanding it was so simple and always in front of us. Plus of course, the feelings of Bliss and Love and Oneness. This made me think of Jack plugging back in the cork, while the energy and glow of the Source permeated him as he starts laughing/smiling/crying.
Which brings us to the Source itself, the Heart of the Island, containing water, bright golden light and electromagnetism. Also quoted as “life, death and rebirth” by Mother. “A little bit of this light is in every living thing”.
The Island itself could be a metaphor for something – maybe it’s created in a bubble, dimension, reality? I learned about pocket universes from Sandi T, maybe it’s that? An in between place?
Many accounts have talked about the tapestry of life, Indra’s Net aspects. In the show, there’s Mother’s and Jacob’s weaving of their own tapestry.
The color white is mentioned in many accounts, a pure or bright white. This is what we see when a part of the bomb goes off at the end of season 5. The screen goes to white for some reason. Maybe it represented death or passing on for them in some way. Maybe it implies they went to the afterlife plane at that point (that they all created for each other)?
Beeping/humming noises are mentioned by experiencers, which are heard throughout the show as well.
I have read of people seeing wheels in their journeys, and I think they said it relates to reincarnation or other timelines, correct me if I’m wrong. Of course there was the Donkey Wheel, which made them time travel.
I read a comment a while back in the sub, and someone mentioned the term ‘karass’, coined by Kurt Vonnegut, which means a group of people who are linked spiritually. Could apply that to soul groups/families, which we can suppose the Lostaways were.
I think I recall the mention of electromagnetism in accounts, if so, it is spaced out on the Island and in other places in the world in the show.
The phrase ‘’Don’t mistake coincidence for fate” and vice versa used in the show. The use of synchronicity in the show. Dreams/visions in the show. All things that experiencers talk about happening mainly after their experiences, sometimes before in their life.
Maybe there was a message to the use of the song ‘’Make Your Own Kind Of Music’’ by Mama Cass. Manifesting? Power of the mind? Just be yourself and love yourself? Life is what you make it?
The use of the number 108 all throughout the show, which is a sacred number in cultures and religions implying the wholeness of existence. It is also the divinity of time, where 1 is the singularity of the present, 0 is nothingness of past and 8 is infinity of future. As mentioned, this number implied many connections throughout the show of people, places and things.
Of course, the whole series is a journey of life’s challenges, what it means to be human, joys and hardships, forgiveness, redemption, duality, etc. It’s more of a grand metaphor for life on Earth. And if anyone has any thoughts on Jacob and Smokie/MIB, even the Island itself, then comment on that as well.
There has always been talk that fans caught on too quickly during the first season, and the producers had to retailor things because of it. What they caught onto was that they figured out the characters were all dead and in some type of purgatory. Not sure if the producers admitted to this or not, but it’s interesting to think about. I can sort of see how that would make sense if they kept going with that formula. A lot of the stuff on the show would have still worked in that context. Of course at the end, Christian says it was all real, but where they are now, ‘there is no now’, and everything before that was real and it all mattered.
That’s all for now folks. I realize this show can be applied in the same way to other spiritual arenas and concepts, but I tried to focus as best to NDE/STE. I also realize this show is not the best or go to example for revealing things or making an impact on the population, once again I am using it as it is one of my personal favorites.
I am not the smartest cookie, so if anyone else who loves the show wants to add anything to these points for more depth or add your own I didn’t mention, please feel free. I am always more interested in other people’s thoughts, especially when it comes to this show. Just thought this was a fun thing to do. Thanks.

2023.06.08 00:35 BeautifullyInspire My boss took my name off an Emmy award win

I know this is first world issue and people have other problems. But please give me the opportunity to vent.
Bit of background to set the stage
I hold a degree in linguistics and I have been working in the video industry for 10 years. I have some mental issues, but Im considered high functioning. I suffer from extreme low self esteem, depression, and have social anxiety. I am not considered attractive and I am female. I was misdiagnosed with borderline retardation as a child, which delayed my education. Therefore, it’s difficult for me to get people to take me seriously.
Main: actual vent
My boss told me that I was going to win an Emmy for a series I worked on with she and a colleague. It would have been my first ever. Turns out my name got left off the award. It only allows 5. Three names were dedicated to production, two others were sales and accounting.
My colleague who worked on more episodes than me rightfully got credit, but my name was removed and my boss announced to the whole station that it was because of "lack of space." It's frustrating because I worked on the series too. Honestly, if anyone deserved full credit, it was my colleague who did 4 episodes. I did 1 and my boss did just 1.
I wish she could have left both our names off or included mine as well…and deleted the admin people. Plus, she already has two Emmy wins this year, so it would have been nice for me to get some recognition too.
In addition… I was invited to attend the Emmy awards but my boss said they only would send people who were actually in the lineup to receive an award and if I wanted to go I would have to sit out-of-pocket. So I said I think I’d like to go…and then she went and freaking changed her mind saying that “there’s not a lot of hotel space so maybe it’ll be rude of you to go, (my name)”

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As
Spider Man Across the Spider Verse neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse , which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Spider Man Across the Spider Verse .)
“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Spider Man Across the Spider Verse , we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only
one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise
. "By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.
There's nothing so wrong with “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse ” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse ” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.
It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. Spider Man Across the Spider Verse ” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."Spider Man Across the Spider Verse " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length.
In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Spider Man Across the Spider Verse ” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.
“They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said Spider Man Across the Spider Verse Wakanda Forever (2022) FULLMOVIE ONLINE

2023.06.08 00:32 FlyingDadBomb At Risk of Downvotes, Should We Consider a One-Day Boycott?

Please hear me out before you respond. I know a lot of people feel very strongly about this, and a lot of people are tired of complaints and just want to play the dang game, and I get it.
That said, Second Dinner has created numerous issues for players in the past two months that, notably, have left a poor taste in the mouths of the community. Namely:
  1. Flexible Series drops came as an unpleasant surprise, rather than being announced in advance, which lead to people saving fopinning/unpinning cards like Darkhawk and Knull and then not getting them.
  2. After deciding not to drop Darkhawk, they're putting out an incredibly overpriced Darkhawk Bundle, allowing you to buy him directly after arbitrarily refusing to make him easier to acquire freely.
  3. Among the cards that they've decided not to drop are, surprisingly, extremely meta-relevant Season Pass cards (Hit Monkey and Zabu).
  4. This is especially concerning with SD's proven history of nerfing cards only AFTER they become more available.
  5. SD is dropping only undesirable cards (cards that have no meta relevance), and, rather than dropping them directly to series 3 as they suggested was possible, they're dropping them first to series 4, which could make cards like Darkhawk, Knull, Spider-Ham and Spider-Man 2099 more difficult to acquire through collector's reserves.
All of this paints a picture of a card game that is all too eager to tie performance to value, creating the possibility that those who pay more will have an easier time competing, which does not bode well for the future of the game, and is in diametric opposition to Ben Brode's stated goal at the beginning (anyone else keep getting those YouTube ads that start with Brode saying "what if you couldn't just go into a card game, drop hundreds of dollars and immediately have the best cards?").
Thus far, though, SD has been entirely unreceptive to any of these concerns. They were brought up when flexible series drops were announced, and SD pushed forward with this month's series drops as if we said nothing. It's clear they hear us, but they aren't listening. The only response given thus far has been to tell us that there's "more to come," which is not exactly comforting given that what we've already seen is not so great.
What we could consider is a one-day blackout, where a large enough group of us decide collectively to not play the game. Don't even log on to collect your free 50 credits. I would suggest we do so on the day of Silk's release on 6/12. That would certainly get SD's attention. I would also suggest that we have specific asks (rather than just "stop," or "be more transparent"). I think two reasonable requests are as follows:
  1. A transparent series drop schedule for Season Pass cards - that way we know exactly how much early access we're paying for, and they can't keep $10 cards out of the hands of the public in perpetuity. Have all the flexibility you want with newly released cards, but leave $10 monthly cards out of it.
  2. No bundles containing series 4 or series 5 cards. Stop letting people buy their way into higher series.
These two demands alone would help prevent SD from tying value to performance and pushing the game into dicey territory where cash is king.
There is precedent for these types of boycotts. I remember when the Ubisoft game For Honor had released and immediately started putting a heavy emphasis on their premium currency. That led to a proposed boycott, and the community didn't even have to go through with it before Ubisoft enacted meaningful change.
This could be a real chance to let Second Dinner know that the community is unhappy but also that we're willing to do something about it. As they've proven, just being upset is not enough for them to make any meaningful changes. I'm curious to see what you all think. I can see a lot of you are unhappy about these changes.
A note to those who are totally OK with everything Second Dinner has done thus far: consider for a moment that we all want the same thing. We are all here because the core game of Marvel Snap is so freaking fun, and the theme is so on point and relatable to our interests, and we want to see the game succeed because then we get to keep playing it forever and ever. But, if you are someone who doesn't think Second Dinner has done anything wrong, you have to know that their actions have negatively impacted the Marvel Snap community. In no uncertain terms, they're turning people away, which means the game that you and I both love is potentially jeopardized. Just look at the state of the subreddit and content creator community. You have prominent people saying they aren't playing anymore, or aren't spending any money because it's either not worth it, or too predatory. I myself almost quit earlier this year. I stopped playing for two weeks during the Shuri/Thanos meta because SD was slow to balance untenable metas and the card acquisition system made it extremely difficult to compete without the imbalanced cards. And yeah, the thought has crossed my mind to stop again given this new round of card acquisition shenanigans. And, like it or not, I'm not the only one. So even though you might be totally fine with it, and think people who aren't are just entitled whiners, but at the end of the day they're people who play the game and healthy games can't afford to lose players, at least not at the rate of those who are upset. So again, we want the same thing, and SD is the obstacle.
I hope we can have a reasonable discussion about this. Please share your thoughts. Do you think a boycott is a good idea? Would you suggest any changes to what I've outlined (date, demands, other issues)? If you don't think it's a good idea, how do you suggest we better get the attention of Second Dinner in a greater capacity than what they've shown right now?
TL;DR: SD has screwed up in numerous ways, but hasn't shown a willingness to listen to our concerns and adapt. A one-day boycott on 6/12 (the day of Silk's release) could make them listen if enough of us participate, and enact meaningful changes. If you don't agree and think SD has done nothing wrong, know that we both want the same thing - a healthy and vibrant game with lots of players, and SD's actions are harming player retention.
Edit: One last thought: What would Hobie do??

A thread for new collectors to ask basic questions of the community.
Frequently Asked Questions below!
A longer version of the subreddit rules is here.
For questions specifically concerning bootlegs or vendor legitimacy, please ask in the Bootleg Megathread.
NSFW & Spoiler Guidelines
  • For Self Posts: include a bolded NSFW note next to links in that post.
  • For Links to sites/images: If the figure is NSFW, or the website has any NSFW content (including ads) be sure to tag your post NSFW and use the appropriate link flair.
Bootlegs
Any collection posts containing bootlegs, comments advocating buying bootlegs, or links to sites selling bootlegs, recasts, or unlicensed merchandise will be removed.
People often ask about the legitimacy and/or safety of a number of websites which sell large resin statues. The more commonly-asked of those deal primarily in resins from studios which do not have a license from the Japanese IP holders to produce merchandise. Therefore links to those sites are not permitted here. Another sign is if MyFigureCollection doesn't list the either the statue, its manufacturer, or the shop it's being sold on.
MyFigureCollection
My Figure Collection is like MyAnimeList... but for figures! Their database includes thousands of items which been produced during the last couple of decades, along with reviews of shops and other helpful articles. One can also list their own collection and post gallery photos.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. The price is also determined by the size of the box. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQs.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • European Union: As of 1st July 2021, VAT has to be paid on all goods imported from outside of the EU. Retailers are supposed charge VAT for purchases under €150, however many Japanese retailers currently do not, so VAT will be charged when your order arrives in the EU. Orders that are >€150, VAT and duty will be charged by your local customs.
  • UK: As of 1st January 2021, VAT is to be charged by retailers for orders <£135. However, customs isn't currently charging VAT on parcels valued at <£135, even if the VAT hasn't been paid. Goods >£135 will have their VAT and duty calculated and charged by customs.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips were discontinued after a long run. A current version is the Vattensten, if you're inclined to buy your case and lights at the same time.
LED strips have become very commonly available in recent years; most hardware and home furnishing stores carry a selection now. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. What are "scales" and "prizes"? What is the difference between them?
Those are classifications for figures based on a few factors.
  • "Prizes" are generally more simply produced figures which are intended to be given as prizes for playing arcade games. They are inexpensive and lack the detail of scale figures, though some prize figure lines have standouts which may approach lower-end scales in quality. That is uncommon and often depends on the individual figure.
  • "Scales" are called such because they are nominally designed to be proportional to the dimensions of the character which they are based on. They are generally of much better manufacture and materials than prize figures, allowing for more detail in painting, accessories, or complex poses.
  • "Trading" figures appear in gashapon machines or as blind boxes on shop counters, often as sets which include multiple characters. As suggested by the class name, the randomness encourages trading. They are usually very inexpensively-produced, though as with prizes, some series are better than others.
  • "Non-scale" encompasses a variety of other categories. It is often used to describe poseable figure lines such as figma and Nendoroids.
In recent years producers such as Good Smile Company attempted to further bridge the gap between prize quality and scales by introducing figure lines which are intended to be moderately-priced while retaining a higher level of detail than the typical prize figure, to varying levels of success.
17. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Flare
  • Stronger
18. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
19. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

20. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
Many figure companies are active on Twitter, so following them there is recommended for quicker news.
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
21. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
22. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.

2023.06.08 00:26 UniversityFrequent15 Camping in the Cambrian Mountains

Camping in the Cambrian Mountains
When most people go camping in Wales, Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons seem to be the places to go, but mid Wales is often overlooked. It may not hold some of the loftier summits found in the aforementioned national parks, but it also draws far fewer crowds, and to me that is a big selling point. You can walk for hours without seeing a single soul. Having received some bad news about a family member, solitude and space was exactly what I needed.
I spent the day before obsessing over my kit. I am no ultra light camper - far from it, but this time I wanted to cut out as much weight as possible. While packing, every item was questioned. I worked out how many tent pegs I needed, allowed 2 spares and removed the others. I swapped out a small folding table for a canister stand for the stove, I substituted my chair for an ultra light stool, and I would rely on a water filter rather than bringing all the water I need (usually 2L plus a drink). I got my pack weight down to 12kg, not light to some, but to someone who thinks 18kg is reasonable, I was quite happy with this number. I decided half a litre was enough to take for the walk as the weather was warm. Going down a season on the sleeping bag was tempting due to the warmer weather but on the mountains it is very different at night. A strong westerly wind was forecast, so wind chill was definitely going to be a factor to bear in mind.
The walk in didn't get off to the best start. I had to follow a track through a farm where it split - one path was longer and less steep, the other shorter and steeper but having better options for collecting water. I chose the latter of the two but took the wrong path because my watch's compass had decided to play up for a moment. Once the error was realised, I was not concerned, knowing that both paths would arrive at the same location, I continued on.
There would be a couple of springs near this path I would use to take on water, and a couple of associated bodies of water, but alas, both of these springs were bone dry, the ground there dessicated and cracked where a once sizeable pool of water sat. A pool of murky stagnant water was now my only option at the altitude I had reached. Deciding not to opt for the murky pool, I headed down the path I was originally going to walk up until I reach the remains of an old mine - and for this reason was glad to have bought a water filter, as this was an old lead mine. The water may possibly have been OK to drink, but it was not a risk I was willing to entertain. Now with a couple of litres of filtered water in my pack I headed back up.
At 754m the summit is very prominent over the surrounding hills. The view is spectacular, and easily offers a panorama that could rival many a fine view from the Lake District or Scotland. The sun shone strong in a cloudless sky, and beneath it a diffused reflection of it coming off the Irish Sea - something you don't expect to see from mid Wales. To the north, you could see as far as the Aran ridge and Cadair Idris. If it were not for the haze, even the Carneddau of northern Snowdonia could be visible.
Once I had finished admiring the scenery, it was time to find somewhere to spend the night. The view from the summit would make a fine view to open the tent to in the morning, but the forecast was mist and fog overnight, clearing later in the morning, so there would likely be no views at all. This was one factor that influenced my decision on where to camp, but the overriding one was, as often with summit camping, the wind. It was a relentless 30mph wind, no gusts, just strong and steady. Spending the night on the summit would meant enduring the noise of the constant winds battering the tent. I opted for a spot just below the summit ridge on the Western side of the mountain, with the wind coming in from the east. It took me a while of following the summit ridge, checking what the wind was like while stood, and again while crouched, to see what the wind would be like hitting the tent, for me to decide on a spot.
According to the forecast, temperatures would dip down to 5° but with the wind chill factor would take it down to -2°, and from past experience, I believed that it probably wasn't too far off the mark, with low cloud and mist added into the mix. That was what had made me decide on a 3 season sleeping bag.
By some stroke of luck, the spot I found that offered some shelter from the worst of the wind, also had the best ground for pitching a tent; level and quite flat, and luxuriously soft, a combination of grass and moss which is almost always wet, but not today. This was ideal. Of course, a flat pitch is a rarity, and even when you find what you think is a flat pitch, you often find that even the slightest gradient can soon make you realise it wasn't as flat as first thought, often indicated by the way you rarely wake up with your body or mat in their original positions. I wasn't complaining though, as I had done far worse in the past.
I sat outside until nearly midnight watching the sun go down, with brief interruptions of having to get up and walk for a minute of two to get the blood flowing and warm myself up a bit. With the combined factors of darkness, uneven ground, boots not being tied, strong wind and a generous amount of vodka, I spent what seemed like a full minute nearly falling over. Somehow I remained on my feet, but decided it was most certainly time to hit the hay.
I woke some time after 5, and could see the light was creeping in, and recognised a familiar colour of light I have seen many a time from within the tent, so popped my head out to confirm that indeed we were clagged in, and there would be no glorious sunrise. Still, that sunset the previous night was a tough act to follow. Despite me having what I thought was warm enough clothing, it was actually the cold that had awoken me. I had planned ahead and bought a down blanket to throw over me in case I had gotten cold. The blanket is very effective and before long at all I was toasty, the warmth causing me to nod off again for another couple of hours.
The cloud had all cleared, blue skies and fluffy white clouds greeted me by the time I re-emerged from the tent. I was going nowhere without coffee and porridge, and by the time my gear was all packed and ready to go, the sun was beating down again. My return journey was via the same route that had got me there. I could have made it down quite quickly but opted to saunter, and quite likely I could have easily missed seeing some incredible red kites flying had I put my head down and marched back to the car.
This was one of those trips where I didn't take the weather for granted, it was well planned, well looked forward to and well enjoyed. Sometimes it takes a camp like this to make us realise that all those wet camps in rough weather make trips like this one quite special.

2023.06.08 00:23 sonofabutch Smoked out tonight, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Tom "Smoke" Sturdivant

The 1950s Yankee dynasty had some great hitters -- Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Moose Skowron, Hank Bauer, Gil McDougald, just to name a few -- but the key to going to eight World Series between 1950 and 1959 (and winning six of them) was a pitching staff that led the league in ERA in five of those 10 seasons -- and in the top three in all 10!
Whitey Ford was the ace of the staff, going an unbelievable 121-50 (.708 W%) with a 2.66 ERA (140 ERA+) between 1950 and 1959. And that was with Casey Stengel often skipping Ford against weaker teams to save him for tougher match-ups, meaning that most of those wins came against top competition. In 1956, for example, the Chairman of the Board had 10 starts against teams with losing records, and 20 starts against teams with records of .500 or better. He went 7-1 with a 2.27 ERA against the losers, and 12-5 with a 2.59 ERA against the winners!
But behind Ford were some pretty good if less famous pitchers, including Allie Reynolds, Eddie Lopat, Tommy Byrne, and Bob Grim. And another, even lesser known hurler won two rings as a key member of the Yankee rotation: Tom Sturdivant.
A hard enough thrower in his youth that he got the nickname "Smoke," by the time Sturdivant reached the Yankees he was called "Snake" because of the way his pitches moved. He threw a curve that broke away from right-handed batters, a screwball that broke away from lefties, a sinking fastball, and a looping change-up. All were good pitches, but none of them was great. Ted Williams was asked how Sturdivant was so successful without overpowering stuff, and he replied:
"Maybe he hasn’t got a thing. But I notice one thing. He keeps winning."
Eventually he did find a thing, though. Particularly later in his career, Sturdivant became known for his knuckleball. He would call it his "money pitch." He also complained about the pitch like an unruly pet, saying "it just won't act right 'til late in the season."
Born in Gordon, Kansas, on April 28, 1930, Thomas Virgil Sturdivant grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Capitol Hill High School. Sturdivant was signed by Yankee scout Tom Greenwade, who also signed another kid from Oklahoma, Mickey Mantle. Like Mantle, Sturdivant was signed as an infielder. But Sturdivant also was a pretty good pitcher as a teenager, as Greenwade told a reporter:
"Used to be a high-school pitcher in Oklahoma City, you know. And one of the greatest. He set some kind of record. More than 100 innings without being scored on."
Sturdivant struggled to hit his first few seasons as an infielder in the minors, hitting .246 in 281 at-bats in 1950. He then spent all of 1951 and much of 1952 in the U.S. Army, and -- as happened to most major leaguers drafted into the service -- spent most of his time playing baseball for a base team. (As Whitey Ford once said: "Army life was rough. Would you believe it, they actually wanted me to pitch three times a week!") Sturdivant's success pitching in the Army, as well as a leg injury that cost him some of his running speed, convinced him he should ask the Yankees to try him at pitching.
"I knew I wasn't getting anywhere, batting .246 in Class B, so I decided I'd better try something else if I wanted to stay in baseball, which I did, badly."
He returned from the Army in time to pitch 86 innings with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate, the Beaumont Roughnecks, and went 3-3 with a 3.56 ERA. His days as an infielder were over.
Sturdivant went 10-7 with a 2.98 ERA in Double-A the following season, and 8-9 with a 3.57 ERA in Triple-A the year after that. Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds, a fellow graduate of Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City who had gone 20-8 for the Yankees in 1952, had retired after the 1954 season. That winter, he worked with Sturdivant and told him he might make the Yankees in spring. Sturdivant's hard work that off-season impressed manager Casey Stengel. "We learned that he can be a fighter, and that's what we want with this club," he said.
He made the team out of spring training and made his major league debut on April 14 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park -- Boston's home opener. Bob Grim started the game and was bombed for five runs on seven hits through six innings. Sturdivant entered the game in the 7th, with the score 5-2, and gave up another run. The Yankees battled back in the bottom of the 8th, scoring two runs on back-to-back singles from Elston Howard and Jerry Coleman to make it a two-run game, but Sturdivant gave up a two-run single in the 8th to pitcher Ellis Kinder to put the game out of reach again, and the Yankees lost, 8-4.
In 33 games that year, Sturdivant posted a 3.16 ERA and a 1.302 WHIP, not bad for a rookie. He didn't give up a lot of hits, but he did walk 41 men in 68.1 innings. Stengel didn't mind that, though. In a 2020 article, "Big Walkers", Bill James wrote about how Stengel employed a strategy of "pitching around" power hitters. When a slugger was at the plate, pitchers were coached to work the edges of the plate, not giving him anything good to hit. He might chase pitches and strike out... he might hit something off the end of the bat... or he might walk. Any of the three, in Stengel's opinion, was a better outcome than throwing a pitch down the middle to a guy who could hit it 450 feet.
As a result, the Yankees often were near the top in walks allowed -- but also in fewest home runs allowed. And also in double plays. And also, not coincidentally, in earned run average.
In his five seasons with the Yankees, Sturdivant walked 221 batters in 524.1 innings (3.8 BB/9), but only gave up 45 home runs (0.8 H9). He also induced 44 double plays. James, in looking at what made the Yankees successful in the 1950s, discovered that they had a huge differential in HR-GIDP. In 1955, Sturdivant's first year in the league, the Yankees hit 175 home runs, and grounded into 101 double plays (+74). Yankee opponents had 108 home runs, and grounded in 145 double plays (-37). In 1956, the Yankes were +86, their opponents -53.
James wrote:
This is not a typical championship team pattern. In many areas, the 1950s Yankees were just an ordinary team. They really had only one outstanding starting pitcher, while Cleveland usually had three or four. But the Yankees huge advantages in Home Runs vs. Double Plays enabled them to win almost every year.
Sturdivant rode this strategy to back-to-back 16-win seasons, going 16-8 with a 3.30 ERA (118 ERA+) in 1956, and 16-6 with a 2.54 ERA (142 ERA+) in 1957.
After those two great seasons, though, Sturdivant's career went up in... well... smoke.
In Spring Training 1958, he held out for a raise, eventually signing for $18,000, a $4,000 raise from what he'd made the year before. He gave up 10 runs in his first two starts of the year, and then missed a month with a sore arm. When he came back, he was hit hard in his next three starts, and was banished to the bullpen. After a pretty good month (8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 K), he was put back into the rotation, and went 3-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 32.2 innings, but his arm still wasn't quite right, and he missed some time in August due to a heel injury. He was on the World Series roster in 1958, but didn't pitch.
All off season there were rumors that Sturdivant was on the trading block, and after another slow start -- 0-2 with a 4.97 ERA, and still bothered by his sore arm -- he was dealt to the Yankees' favorite trading partner in the late 1950s, the Kansas City Athletics. "Snake", along with Jerry Lumpe and Johnny Kucks, was dealt for Ralph Terry and previously forgotten Yankee Hector Lopez -- a pretty good deal for the Yankees, as Terry and Lopez helped the Yankees to five straight pennants and two championships between 1960 and 1964. Lumpe, a little used utility player with the Yankees, proved to be a solid regular for the Athletics and then an All-Star with the Tigers in 1964. But Kucks, an All-Star with the Yankees in 1956, was done, going 12-21 with a 4.78 ERA (84 ERA+) in two seasons with the Athletics, and was out of baseball after the 1960 season.
Sturdivant would hang around another five seasons, and pitch for six different teams! He went from the Athletics to the Senators -- not the original Senators, who were now the Twins, but the expansion team founded in 1961 that would become the Rangers in 1972 -- then the Pirates, the Tigers, back to the Athletics, and then rejoined Casey Stengel on the Mets in 1964. Over that stretch he went 21-20 with a 4.16 ERA and 1.301 WHIP as a swingman.
The 34-year-old Sturdivant announced prior to the 1964 season he was running for the Oklahoma State Senate and that he'd quit baseball if elected in November. The Mets beat him to it, though, releasing him in May after he posted a 5.97 ERA in 28.2 innings. Maybe more as a campaign ploy, in July Sturdivant signed with the Oklahoma City 89ers. He went 6-3 with a 3.89 ERA and 1.365 WHIP in 74.0 innings. He lost the election, and retired from baseball.
After that, Sturdivant owned a trucking company and tried to drum up support for the Hall of Fame case for his old mentor Allie Reynolds.
In 2000, the 69-year-old Sturdivant was in a serious car accident. Someone -- he never learned who -- found him on the roadside, thrown from his truck after it had rolled five times. When the ambulance arrived, they thought he was dead. They strapped his body to a stretcher and loaded him into an ambulance.
Sturdivant told sportswriter Brian Jensen:
"When we were driving to the hospital, I was in the back and they had me strapped down and I guess when I came to, I raised my head and I said, 'hey could y'all call my wife for me,' and the driver almost jumped out of the van. It just wasn't time for me to go."
He had broken his back, both hips, his pelvic bone, his tailbone, multiple ribs, and had a punctured lung. He never recovered.
"I don't have a life," Sturdivant said. "You know, I have a hard time remembering a lot of stuff and I'm kind of slow. I kind of have little spells where I pass out and have a hard time walking straight."
Sturdivant died on February 28, 2009.
Smoke Show:
Sturdivant remained a Yankee for life. After his playing days were over and he was living in Oklahoma, he was an early adopter of a subscription service that allowed him to watch Yankee games!

2023.06.08 00:22 wanderingtime222 Struggling to rewatch 1989 QL

I love rewatching sci-fi shows. I rewatch Buffy, SG-1, Supernatural (well, seasons 1-5, lol)--the list goes on. Despite the fact that QL is one of the greatest sci-fi shows of ALL TIME, I struggle to rewatch it, because it's So. Dang. Sad. I saw the finale as a teen, and I remember sobbing uncontrollably at the idea that Sam never got to go home. And so many of the episodes just hit me so hard--like the one where he's in the asylum, getting electroshock, or the one where Al sees his wife again...I can't even listen to Georgia on My Mind without wanting to cry. I rewatched the Pilot last night, and while I thought it was amazing (so well written, so compelling) it's also deeply sad (like when he calls his father---OMG). Anyway, I wondered if anyone else has such a gut-punch emotional reaction to QL.

2023.06.08 00:13 lautaromassimino Who should have stayed?

I'm the guy who uploaded his version of a rewrite of the show a few days ago, and as I mentioned then, I'm rewatching the entire show for the first time since each season premiered.
Currently I'm in episode 4x02. But I've realized that the further I get with the story, the more I feel like the S4 should have been a total reboot of the cast, and the story of a new generation. And I'm feeling it more than anything now that I've started the S4. Why? Because of how quickly they put Polo's death behind them.
Yes, I understand that the circumstances were completely different from Marina's death, but still, we literally don't see a mention of it again, even though the boy died in Guzmán's arms. And I get that they wanted to just move on with the story, but it feels almost anticlimactic, after what the first death (Marina's) meant. With Marina, we had a scene with photos and goodbye messages outside her locker. HER felt all the more believable. Here we have NOTHING, and it is super illogical because we also remember that his death was called suicide. I understand that our characters want to turn the page, but that does not mean that the rest of the school did too.
So yes, I firmly believe that it would have been much better to let this entire generation go in good shape, and bring in a whole new one in the fourth season. I already said it in another post, where I suggested an idea of having the arrival of the Blancos as protagonists, with Benjamin as a villain and some recent tragedy for them (like making the death of their mother more recent, or something like that).
BUT, considering that that didn't happen, what would you have done? I mean, who would you have chosen to stay? If you had to choose, let's say three characters (not five, that seemed excessive to me) from S1,2&3.
My take would be, maybe, Samuel (because he's the lead), Rebeka (just to give her a decent plot line in season 4), and Caye (seeing only s3, I wouldn't have picked her. But I fell completely in love with the redemption, character development, and the happy ending she had in seasons 4 and 5. She deserves that. If we hadn't had her in those seasons, the character wouldn't be as beloved as she currently is).

2023.06.08 00:12 browncatmaster I JUST FINISHED THIS ANIME AND I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY ANYMORE [possible spoilers but hey, if you're gonna read this and you haven't seen this anime, this is a very questionable decision and I recommend against it, but you're here reading this like a fucking idiot and not finishing the anime]

I'M SORRY, I'M DRUNK. To be fair, I'm still sober enough to know that I am definitely writing this and that my brain is still functional enough. But oh my god, guys, I'm sorry, I'm not kidding when I say I DESPERATELY NEEDED SOMEONE TO UNDERSTAND MY EMOTIONS, I DON'T WANT TO BE ALONE FOR THIS AND NO ONE ELSE IN MY LIFE RIGHT NOW HAS FINISHED IT TO MY KNOWLEDGE.
BUT MY GOD. I don't. What. Oh my god. Did anyone bawl and literally sob-cry at the second last episode? I don't know what to say, yet I have to let out some of my emotions or I'm gonna collapse like a supernova on the verge of becoming a blackhole I swear to God.
I started watching this randomly nearly 6-7 years ago. Things were so different back then. I ran out of steam and just never ended up finishing it when the last season came out. Yeah, it was a unique anime (imo, anyway, the premise itself is so fascinating, especially what the story grew into), but hey, there are a lot of unique shows I guess. But in general, as it tends to happen, life gets in the way and we all got shit to do.
Recently I thought, shit, why the fuck not finish this shit. I was supposed to watch it with a buddy, we finished the first season (again), but she got busy, I got busy, life happens.
Even more recently I thought, shit, fuck it, I'm gonna finish this goddamn thing. My friend was okay with it, we live drastically different lives and it's hard to get things in order for both of us to watch simultaneously, but she wouldn't mind and I'm fairly certain I did ask her if she's chill with me finishing it.
So again, I decided to finish it. I don't even know what to say. I don't binge, or at least I try not to binge as a result of preserving the emotions you may want to feel when going through any series. I had a relatively bad night last night, I had about 6 episodes left and half a bottle of whiskey (which is not empty because I'm not insane) and I decided to just finish it.
MY GOD. THE LAST BATTLE?!?!?!?! KAYANO'S POSSIBLE DEATH [hey hey, calm down put ur panties back on, I know there's the whole miracle of bringing her back, but I didn't know it would happen, and why the hell ruin the experience by being a smartass and going "oh hurr durr they're gonna bring her back" I decided I genuinely didn't know] THEM HOLDING KORO-SENSEI DOWN, HIM STILL EDUCATING AND THE FINAL ROLE CALL. Oh my god. I cried the whole fucking time, I'm not ashamed to admit it. THE WHOLE TIME, GUYS, I CRIED THE WHOLE TIME, I DON'T CARE. I cried. My god, that hurt. I don't. Fuck man, especially after the reveal of his backstory? and Kayano's backstory? and how far everyone got? The whole concept of E class being the underdog? The backstory of Principal Asano? The change in the entire school's behaviour with respect to E class? Everyone's hopes and dreams? I'm sorry, but Episode 24 almost destroyed me. Oh my god, Nagisa's ugly crying once the blow was dealt? The entire class, EVEN KARMA AND ITONA CRYING?!?!?!? I'm sorry I know this is probably a little extra, but I swear I'm aware of all these emotions and I'm feeling them all. It's so beautiful. This anime is so fucking beautiful. All the lessons. All the funny moments. All the solemn moments. All the moments of bonding. Those plot twists. The unique set up. The growth EVERYONE went through. No, I have 0 shame in admitting that a 25 year old man was just sitting here, drunk, crying and crying and crying. If I didn't have roommates, I would have cried just as hard as the entire E class. I would have shamelessly bawled like a fucking baby. No, I have 0 shame in admitting that.
I am a firm believer in learning of emotional intelligence through stories. I spent 20 years not being able to learn this from my family (a result of abuse and neglect, kudos to being a south asian I suppose), so the way I learned all this were through stories.
This takes the fucking cake. As soon as ep 24 was over, I immediately told my younger brother to watch it. I can't explain how much this anime means to me right now. My god. It's fucking beautiful. It's so fucking beautiful. It's almost perfect. I'm sorry, I dont. Fcuk. Holy shit.
IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS GODDAMN THING, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU WAITING FOR YOU STUPID FUCK?????? GO WATCH IT, YOU GONNA WATCH DUMBASS SHIT ANYWAY, WATCH SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM. AND DON'T BE A FUCKING DOLT AND BINGE IT LIKE SOME NORMIE ASSHOLE I'm sorry please don't take any offense my drunken self may be dealing out to you. For real. This anime is amazing. It's not perfect, obviously, but it doesn't matter. It's so good. It will teach you so many things.
Rest in Power, Koro-sensei. You don't even really exist, but thank you sir, for everything, for all your wisdom, for all your sorrows, for all your pain, for all your mistakes, for all the things you wish you had done differently. When I watch your story again, and I know I will, I will try to remember every single goddamn lesson you taught us. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much.

2023.06.08 00:05 bikingfencer Galatians - chapter four - Paul wrestles with election

Chapter Four
  1. … we were enslaved [משעבדים, MeShoo`eBahDeeYM] to fundamentals [ליסודות, LeeYÇODOTh] [of] the world.
“The word τα στοιχεια [ta stoikheia], the elements ... meant (a) the letters of the alphabet… (b) the elements of which a thing was composed, as the fire, air, earth, and water of which the world was thought to be constituted; (c) the elements of the universe, the larger cosmos, including the sun, moon, planets, and stars; and (d) the spirits, angels, and demons which were believed to ensoul the heavenly bodies, traverse all space, and inhabit every nook and cranny of earth, particularly tombs, desert places, and demented persons. These spirits were said to be organized like human governments. In Rom. [Romans] 8:38 Paul calls them ‘principalities’ and ‘powers.’ And vss. [verses] 9 and 10 of our present chapter indicate that he has them in mind in vs. 3. …
Paul … includes in ‘the elements of the universe’ all sub-Christian ideas and observances, both Jewish and Gentile. He regards these ‘elements’ as slave drivers who frighten men with curses for not propitiating them by observance of special days and seasons, food taboos, dietary fads, and circumcision. In Christ he declared his independence of Fate, Fortune, Luck, and Chance, and from astrology, the counterfeit religion and bastard sister of astronomy, whose practitioners exploited the superstition that the stars controlled men’s lives from birth to death.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 521 & 522)
“The elements of the world] A mere Jewish phrase, יסודי עולם הזה yasudey ‘olam hazzeh, ‘the principles of this world;’ that is, the rudiments or principles of the Jewish religion. The apostle intimates that the law was not the science of salvation; it was only the elements or alphabet of it.” (Clarke, 1831, vol. II p. 387)
  1. But [אבל, ’ahBahL] as that was filled the time, sent forth, Gods, [את, ’ehTh] His son, born [of] woman, and subject [וכפוף, VeKhahPhOoPh] to instruction.
“The four words, το πληρωμα του χρονου [to pleroma tou khronou], the fullness of the time, express a whole philosophy of history. The Hebrew prophets and Jewish apocalyptists believed that their God was the creator of the universe and arbiter of the destinies of all men and nations. Nothing could happen that was not his doing, either directly or indirectly through angels and men. He had a time for everything, and everything happened exactly on time. … The completion of this present age would be marked by a blood-red revolution, in which all good men and good works would be ground under the heel of the tyrant, while the wicked reigned supreme. Then suddenly God would intervene with the lightning of judgment to snatch the world from the mouth of the bottomless pit and restore it to Paradise, whence it had fallen with the sin of Adam. Sorrow and sighing would flee away, and the Messiah would reign with the perfection of a theocratic king.
At this juncture, says Paul, when the appointed period of history was ‘full,’ god sent his Son γενομενον εκ γυναικος, γενομενον υπο νομον [genomenon ek gunaikos, genomenon upο nomon], ‘born of woman, bοrn under law.’ … Jesus was not only born under law, but was subject to it all his life. ...The ‘yoke’ of the Torah demanded that he observe the customs of his forefathers, such as wearing phylactery and prayer fringes, ceremonial washing of hands before eating, giving thanks at mealtime, praying at stated times, bringing tithes and sacrifices, and obeying the Ten Commandments.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 522 & 523)
Not to mention circumcision, kashrut, and the prohibition of associating with gentiles.
“Sent forth refers to God’s sending of his Son from his pre-existent state in heaven (I Cor. [Corinthians] 8:6; Phil. [Philippians] 2:6-8; Col. [Colossians] 1:15-17). Yet this Son was born of woman. There is nothing in these words, or elsewhere in Paul’s letters, to prove or disprove that he knew the story of the miraculous conception. His point here is that the Christ, although he was the pre-existent Son of God, did not come into this world with a body composed of celestial substance, but was woman-born like all other human beings. … It was very different from the conception of royal sonship in Ps. 2, where the king is called God’s ‘Son; because he has been chosen to be the Messiah. In Paul, Jesus is God’s Son by nature, and his Christhood follows by virtue of this sonship. This belief was the fundamental cause of the split between the Jews and the Christians. The lowly birth, the obscurity of Nazareth, and the fact that Jesus was a common laborer, constituted a grievous scandal in the eyes of all who were expecting their Deliverer to come riding on a chariot of clouds wielding the lightning of judgment. Paul’s gospel contradicts every form of hyperspirituality that fixes a gulf between God and his material world. On the other hand, his conception of the coming of Jesus was poles removed from the pagan stories of the births of heroes, savior-gods, and kings, whose legends were freighted with illicit relationships and lawless conduct like the lives of the devotees who had created them in their own image.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 523-524)
“Nothing is said explicitly about the Son’s preexistence, which is at most implied … born of a woman: … The phrase is derived from the OT [Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible] (Job 14:1 …). So born, Jesus submitted to the law by being circumcised and thus became capable of falling under its curse. But lest the Galatians draw a wrong conclusion, Paul [and The Interpreters’ Bible] does not mention Jesus’ circumcision. Instead of genomenon, ‘born,’ some patristic writers read gennomenon, and understood this ptc. [participle] as referring to Mary’s virginal conception; but this is anachronistic interpretation.” (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 787)
  1. Accordingly [לפיכך, LePheeYKhahKh], you are not [אינך, ’aYNKhah] a slave anymore [אוד, ’OD], for if [כי אם, KeeY ’eeM] a son, and, if a son, then [אזי, ’ahZahY] also heir from favor [מטעם, MeeTah`ahM] [of] Gods.
“This is Paul’s proclamation of emancipation.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 528)
………………………………………… Worry of Shah’OoL to Galatians [verses 8–20]
  1. In [the] past, in a time that you did not know [את, ’ehTh] Gods, you slaved [את, ’ehTh] who that in their nature [שבמנהותם, ShehBeMahHOoThahM] were not Gods.
“The Jews never ceased to ridicule idols and denounce idolaters… They demoted the old gods to the rank of demons and made a list of detractive names for them: angels, shepherds, princes; kings, emperors, benefactors, heroes; demons, personifications, idols, nonentities. Some were living, some dead; some were good, but were not God. Most of them were bad, and their idols were but images of ‘things of nought.’ …
Paul did not deny the existence of these beings whose ignorant worshipers called them gods, but he declared that they did not partake of the nature of God (I Cor. 8:4-6). God permitted them to plague mankind to punish sin, especially the sin of participating in the sacraments of the Gentile cults (I Cor. 10:19-22; 11:28-31). But Christ had conquered them and no Christian needed to fear them.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 529)
  1. Behold, you are honoring days and new-[moons], seasons [מועדים, MO`ahDeeYM] and years.
“Days like the Sabbath and Yom hakkippurim [“Day of Atonement”] are meant; months like the ‘new moon’; seasons like Passover and Pentecost; years like the sabbatical years… Paul can see no reason for a Gentile Christian to observe these.” (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 788)

…………………………………………
Two the covenants [verses 21-26]
  1. Say to me, you, the wanters to be subject to Instruction, have you not heard [את, ’ehTh] the Instruction?
  2. Is it not written that to ’ahBRahHahM there were two sons, the one from the maid [האמה, Hah’ahMaH] and the second from the woman the free [החפשיה, HahHahPhSheeYah]?
  3. But [אך, ’ahKh] [the] son [of] the maid was born according to [לפי, LePheeY] the flesh, and however [ואילו, Ve’eeYLOo] [the] son [of] the free upon mouth of the promise.
  4. The words the these, they are a parable to two the covenants: the one from Mount ÇeeNah-eeY [Sinai], the birther to slavery, and she is HahGahR [“The Sojourner”, Hagar].
“It is well known how fond the Jews were of allegorizing; every thing in the law was with them an allegory: their Talmud [ancient commentary] is full of these; and one of their most sober and best educated writers Philo, abounds with them…
It is very likely, therefore, that the allegory produced here; St. Paul had borrowed from the Jewish writings; and he brings it in to convict the Judaizing Galatians on their own principles: and neither he, nor we, have any thing farther to do with this allegory, than as it applies to the subject for which it is quoted; nor does it give any license to those men of vain and superficial minds, who endeavour to find out allegories in every portion of the Sacred Writings; and by what they term spiritualizing, which is more properly carnalizing, have brought the testimonies of God into disgrace. May the spirit of silence be poured out upon all such corrupters of the word of God!” (Clarke, 1831, vol. II p. 390)
“Allegorical interpretation rests upon the belief that every word, figure of speech, and grammatical form in scripture has a special ‘spiritual’ significance besides its literal meaning. The theory is that the God who dictated it meant more than rests on the surface and that while he said one thing, he also meant something else in addition to the literal sense… The Greeks had long since applied the method to explain away the immoral things which the gods said and did in Homer… Then Greek-speaking Jews, like Philo Judaeus, employed it apologetically to read Greek philosophy into the O.T. [Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible], proclaiming that Moses had said all these good things long before and better than Homer and Plato.
The wonder is that Paul has so little allegory. His restraint is explained partly by his training as a Pharisee. The rabbis were suspicious of any interpretation of scripture that tended to make Jews lax in their observance of the law. Jews with Gnostic leanings, and those who considered some of their ancestral customs outmoded, could resort to allegory to justify their philosophy and conduct, while maintaining that they were the spiritual superiors of the conservatives who held to the letter of the law … His argument, however, is never strengthened by allegorical symbolism and typology, for these are convincing only to those who by imagination can find them so. Rather, as in Rom. 9-11, he introduces unnecessary complications such as the moral difficulties involved in predestination. His gospel does not rest on the quicksands of allegory, a specious method of interpreting scripture. Its interpretations are of interest to the historian not as correct representations of what the writers and first readers of the Bible had in mind, but only as source materials for understanding the life and thought of the allegorists themselves.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 540)
  1. Hagar signifies [מסמלת, MeÇahMehLeTh] [את, ’ehTh] Mount ÇeeNah-eeY, that is in Arabia, and parallels [ומקבילה, OoMahQBeeYLaH] to Jerusalem of our day, for she is in slavery with her sons.
“… why does Paul mention Arabia…? Possibly because Mt. Sinai is in Arabia[?], which is Ishmaelite territory; he thus associates the Sinai pact with the eponymous patriarch of Arab tribes … Paul thus suggests that the law itself stems from a situation extrinsic to the promised land and to the real descendants of Abraham. Paul’s Jewish former co-religionists would not have been happy with this allegory.” (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 788)
  1. But [אבל, ’ahBahL] Jerusalem from ascended [מעלה, Mah`eLaH], [the] daughter [of] freedom [חורין, HOReeYN] is she, and she is mother to us.
“The Jerusalem which now is was a most unholy “Holy city”, full of injustice, violence and murder, and subject to the cruel and wicked rulers imposed by a Gentile empire. But over against this Jerusalem of slavery lay an ideal celestial city, unseen at present, but destined soon to supersede it. Paul called it the Jerusalem above. Sarah, the free-woman, was the ancestress of its citizens, who were the people of faith and of freedom in Christ…
Paul speaks of Jerusalem above, because this new city of freedom already exists in heaven where Christ is, where dwell the souls of those who have died in Christ. But it also exists on earth as the church, the body of Christ, whose members are colonists from heaven sent to prepare men for the full establishment of God’s kingdom at Christ’s second coming (Phil. 3:20; Col. 3:1-3).
The biblical root of this conception of an ideal future and heavenly Jerusalem is Isa. [Isaiah] 54. Other descriptions appear in Ezek. [Ezekiel] 40-48; Zech. [Zechariah] 2:1-13; Hag. [Haggai] 2:6-9; Tob. [Tobias] 13:9-18 Ecclus. [Ecclesiasticus] 36; Pss. Sol. [Psalms of Solomon] 17:33. Historically the expectation assumed three forms. According to the earliest hope, God would build the new Jerusalem in Palestine and make it the capital of his theocratic world government. The plan of this glorious city was graven upon the palms of his hands (Isa. 49:16). From this idea it was but a step, especially for those influenced by Greek ideas, to think of this ideal Jerusalem as already existing in heaven. According to the Apocalypse of Baruch, God had shown it to Adam in Paradise before he sinned; to Abraham on the night mentioned in Gen. 15:12-21; and to Moses on Sinai, when he gave him the heavenly pattern for an earthly tabernacle (II Baruch 4:1-6; cf. [compare with] Heb. [Hebrews]12:22). The third conception combined these two ideas. The Jerusalem which was ‘above’ would come down to earth to be established in Palestine in place of the city that ‘now is’ (cf. Rev. [Revelation] 3:12, 21:2; II Esdras 7:26; 13:36; 10:54).
So the new Jerusalem belonged to both worlds and to both ages, to heaven and earth, to the present and the future. Its constitution was the new covenant, and its citizens were the men of faith in Christ, a new kind of freemen who traced their spiritual ancestry through the line of Isaac and his mother Sarah as heirs of God’s promise to Abraham. As for Ishmael and his tribe, they were the men of law, predestined to be slaves forever. Needless to say, the Judaizers found Paul’s allegorical exclusion of themselves utterly unacceptable. They believed that the Torah was God’s blueprint for all creation, and that it would be observed forever in the new Jerusalem. That, they said, was why God was going to purge the old city – to establish an order of life in which perfect obedience to his law would be possible.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 541-542)
“…it was a maxim among the rabbins, that, ‘Whatsoever was in the earth, the same was also found in heaven; for there is no matter, howsoever small, in this world, that has not something similar to it in the spiritual world.’ On this maxim, the Jews imagine that every earthly thing has its representative in heaven: and especially whatever concerns Jerusalem, the law, and its ordinances. Rab. Kimchi, speaking of Melchisedec, king of Salem, says, זו ירושלים של מעלה Zu Yerushalem shel me’alah – ‘This is the Jerusalem that is from above.’…
There is a spiritual Jerusalem, of which this is the type; and this Jerusalem, in which the souls of all the righteous are, is free from all bondage and sin: or by this, probably the kingdom of the Messiah was intended; and this certainly answers best to the apostle’s meaning, as the subsequent verse shows.” (Clarke, 1831, vol. II p. 391)
  1. That see, is written:
“Chant, barren, not birthing, [רני עקרה לא ילדה RahNeeY ahQRaH Lo’ YahLahDaH] burst chanting and shouting, not travailing, [פצחי רנה וצהלי לא-חלה PeeTsHeeY ReeNaH VeTsahHahLeeY Lo’-HahLaH] for multitudinous are sons of her deserted than [מי, MeeY] sons of her mistress [כי-רבים בני-שוממיה מבני בעולה KheeY-RahBeeYM BeNaY-ShoMahMeeYHah MeeBeNaY BeooLaH].”
“A telling item in the counterpropaganda of the legalists was the argument that even among the Christians only a radical fringe consisting mainly of foreign Jews, of whom Paul was one, were proposing to abandon the law of Moses. …
In one respect his quotation of Isa. 54:1 does not fit Paul’s allegory. It was Sarah, the mother of freemen, who possessed the husband, and Hagar, the slave, who was the deserted woman. As usual with Paul’s illustrations (cf. Rom. 7:1-4; 11:17-24), the details cannot be pressed without making them go lame …
The Isaian figure to describe the plight of Jerusalem during the Babylonian exile grew out of a common experience in Hebrew family life. Childlessness, particularly the failure to bear sons, was great grief and disgrace. Such was the sorrow of Jerusalem; but the prophet bade her look forward with courage to the time when all her scattered children would come back to her (Isa. 54:3). God was her ‘husband,’ and he would treat his faithful remnant with everlasting lovingkindness, making them more numerous than the former population and giving them a heritage of great peace and prosperity (Isa. 54:13-17).” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 542)
“The prophet’s words are addressed to deserted Zion, bidding it rejoice at the return of the exiles.” (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 788)
  1. But you, my brethren [τεχνα, tekhna, “children”], you are the sons of the promise, as was YeeTsHahQ [“He Laughed”, Isaac].
“The Judaizers claimed that Abraham had obeyed the law of Moses by anticipation, and that God’s promise was his reward. Consequently the descendants of Isaac were children of promise only if they followed Abraham’s example in obeying the law. Paul turned it the other way about: the promise must be taken on faith, not as credit for obedience.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 542)
  1. And just as [וכשם, OoKhShayM] that then pursued, [רדף, RahDahPh] the son that was born according to [לפי, LePheeY] flesh, [את, ’ehTh] the son that was born according to the spirit, yes, also now.
“In Gen 21:10 Sarah, seeing Ishmael ‘playing’ with Isaac and viewing him as the potential rival to Isaac’s inheritance, drives him and his mother out. Nothing in Gen is said of Ishmael’s ‘persecution’ of Isaac, but Paul may be interpreting the ‘playing’ as did a Palestinian haggadic explanation of Gen 21:9 (see Josephus, ANT. [Antiquities] 1.12.3§215 …” (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 788)
“A rabbinical tradition of the second century A.S. interprets the Hebrew participle מצחק [MeeTsHahQ, “play”] (LXX παιζοντα [paizonta] in Gen. 21:9 to mean that Ishmael’s ‘playing’ became so rough that Isaac’s life was in danger. This son of a slave is said to have shot arrows at Isaac to kill him, and Paul’s statement shows that some such tradition was current in his day. He applied it to the Judaizers who were trying to force the Christians to observe the whole law of Moses, and to the unbelieving Jews who were excommunicating the Christians and their families and getting them into trouble with the civil authorities (1:5; 4:17; 5:10; I Thess. [Thessalonians] 2:14-16).” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X p. 543)
  1. But what says the Written [Scripture]?
“Banish [גרש GahRaySh] the maid and [את, ’ehTh] her son, for not will inherit [יירש, YeeYRahSh], son [of] the maid [האמה, Hah’ahMaH], with son [of] the free.”
“The quotation is from Gen. 21:10 … The speaker of these words is Sarah, who is filled with rage against Hagar and Ishmael. Abraham is represented as greatly grieved, but God is said to have sanctioned the demand of the cruel and jealous wife….
This story was one of the effects and one of the causes of the perpetual feud between the Israelites and the tribes that descended from Ishmael. The Hebrews were so sure that God wanted them to have Palestine that they found no moral difficulty in saying that it was God himself who had overruled Abraham’s conscience (Gen. 17:18-21). They affirmed that Ishmael’s character and destiny had been predetermined (Gen. 16:12). Consequently, even his circumcision at the age of thirteen could not make him a member of God’s chosen people. However great this innocent victim of a family feud might become by virtue of the halfhearted blessing conceded by an uneasy conscience (Gen. 17:20-21), he and his descendants were barred forever from the higher blessing. Theirs was to submit to the religious imperialism of the most favored nation or die. Moreover, all Abraham’s other sons except Isaac were barred from the promise and sent away ‘unto the east country’ (Gen. 25:5-6). And yet while all this was said to be the Lord’s doing, it was in the same breath declared to be the doing of the human actors in this drama of the nations. Sarah herself was said to have suggested that Abraham become a father by her Egyptian slave girl. Then, too, it was explained that Hagar’s flight from the cruelty of her mistress was voluntary, making her, rather than the callous compliance of Abraham, responsible for her plight ‘in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur’ (Gen. 16:7).
Paul’s use of Abraham’s expulsion of Hagar and her child has its parallel in the equally heartless treatment of Esau which he employs in Rom. 9-11 in his longer discussion of the divine process of selection. Here too it was assumed that the hatred generated by centuries of war for the possession of Palestine lay in the heart of God. “I hate Esau,” said Malachi (1:3), making God the speaker; and Rom. 9:6-13 presses it to the utmost limit of predestination. But the love of God in Christ Jesus made Paul’s heart better than his inherited doctrine … When the history of the struggle for the possession of “the Holy land” is allegorized to justify a doctrine of “election” which foredooms countless souls to an eternity of torment in a future hell, it becomes as morally atrocious as it is irreconcilable with Paul’s gospel.
Nevertheless Paul’s allegory gives the historian an insight into Paul’s mind as he wrestled with the insoluble problem of God’s sovereignty and human freedom.” (Stamm, 1953, TIB vol. X pp. 543-544)
“Paul bids the Galatians rid themselves of the Judaizers – and, ironically enough, obey the Torah itself.” (Joseph A. Fitzmyer, 1990, TNJBC p. 788)

2023.06.08 00:03 ItalianofromItaly Rewatching Gargoyles as an adult - The Thrill of the Hunt

The episode on Gargwiki.
The episode on Ask Greg.
How long has it been: it's been four weeks since the previous episode.
So, Xanatos' arrest: as a kid, I loved the fact that his defeat at the end of Awakening meant something and he didn't just somehow get loose in-between episodes - but as an adult, I kinda have to ask: how the hell did it happen? At the beginning of this episode, Elisa says "I have to tell you, Mr. Burnett, I'm still surprised at being asked back here, seeing as how I've busted your boss"; shortly afterwards, she clarifies that Xanatos "was only convicted of receving stolen property". Ok, so:
  1. How did she "bust" him, exactly? Where did she find the proofs? She didn't have a warrant for the Castle or anything in the previous episode, so how did she manage?
  2. Even assuming there were some legally usable proofs somewhere, how did the second richest guy in the Disney Canon (first being Scrooge McDuck, of course) end up in prison so quickly and easily? When was the last time you saw a rich guy do the same in real life?
Elisa tries for the first time to convince Goliath to leave the Castle; Weisman has some... interesting thoughts about that: "Goliath is stubborn, even dense and condescending toward Elisa, when she tries to convince him to leave the castle. But I think from his POV, his responses were perfectly natural. Xanatos was banished. The castle was theirs. The concept of ownership was sketchy for the Gargoyles at best, but if they did understand it, they understood it in the "Possession = Ownership" sense. The notion that Xanatos could still "own" the castle after an embarrassing defeat was completely ALIEN to Goliath."
...what?
So the Gargoyles don't understand the concept of "theft"? Between this and the "no-names" thing, no wonder their race is borderline extinct, since they are apparently dumb as f**k; it's either that, or Weisman honestly thinks that's how ownership worked in the tenth century, which, no.
But frankly, that's missing the real point, which is: WHO THE F**K CARES ABOUT THE TRUE OWNER OF THE CASTLE? The Vikings owned absolutely nothing of it, and that didn't stop them from reducing the Gargoyles to rubble; the real problem isn't that some piece of paper somewhere states that Xanatos is the legal owner of Wyvern, the problem is that there's nothing stopping him from killing the Gargs and Goliath isn't willing to face up to that fact yet. Now, if you want to tell me that Goliath is kidding himself about the Clan's possibilities to stay in the Castle (that's probably the best way to interpret his "You worry too much, Elisa. Xanatos was defeated. We are safe here." line) that's fine - but don't bring legal ownership into it, because it has nothing to do with it.
The Pack gets introduced, first as a tv show and then in real life: they were apparently meant to be a bit of a Power Rangers parody ("We were consciously trying to do a professional wrestling meets (the hated) Power Rangers thing"); as a kid who watched both Gargoyles and Power Rangers (don't look at me like that), the thought never crossed my mind. Now that I'm an adult... I still don't see it in any meaningful way. Oh well.
It's a bit weird, seeing the Pack in their first appearance:
  1. They're all humans here; no mutates, no cybernetic abominations, no Xanatos-faced robots - just five human mercenaries using their skills and an arsenal of unconventional weapons.
  2. It's the original formation, which will stop existing after this episode.
  3. Fox is a completely different character here compared to her later appearances; to make it work, you basically have to tell yourself that she's acting throughout the entire episode (at one point she says "We never had it this good" - yeah, because you're totally not the daughter of a multi-billionaire, right Janine?). I'm also pretty sure this is the one and only time she ever wears her Pack uniform.
Lexington deciding to approach the Pack makes sense, between the fact that he's starstruck - without having any prior experience of it, what with the lack of tv sets in medieval Scotland - and the fact that he considers the Pack to be "warriors, just like us!"; plus, as he later says to Goliath, there's no reason why only he can have an Elisa, and moreover "Look, it's not like I revealed all our secrets; I'm not stupid". I just wish the scene went on a bit longer - as it is, we go more or less immediately from "Hi, I'm Lexington!" to "But of course I can bring Goliath to you! It's no problem at all!"
Speaking of which: I love those good old-fashioned death traps at PackMedia Studios, and I love the way the fight develops; here, I pretty much 100% agree with Weisman: "Action-wise this thing is taut. The Pack just keeps coming and coming. The Gargs never have a chance to catch their breath. And, then, suddenly, they do. And the tables turn fiercely. And the Point of View, as well. We are ALWAYS on the side of the hunted. When it's Goliath and Lex, we get very little of the Pack. Just snatches of them attacking. The gargs struggling to stay alive. But up on that roof, we abruptly switch POV. Suddenly, we're following the Pack. Even, dare I say, sympathising with them. Not that we want them to win. But we begin to identify with them as they battle these strange creatures. I love that."
LEX: "I'm never trusting anyone again!"
GOLIATH'S MIND: "Wow. And I thought I was being edgy four episodes ago, when I said I would never trust humans again."
Goliath and Lex hide themselves on a roof which just happens to be full of gargoyle statues - and it's not like they aim for it or anything, they just climb a random building and it's there! A bit too fortuitous, although the sequence itself is great (Hyena just disappers into nothingness at one point, and we never see her again for the rest of the episode - a veritable WTF and awesome choice).
Fox taking a hostage works fine with the way she's presented in this episode, but not with her later characterization - it's the one time "she's acting a bit" doesn't cut it; Weisman's explanation for it doesn't work for me either: "Likewise, look at Fox's actions at the end of the episode. Can you imagine Fox in any later episode crudely taking a hostage? It seems like she checked her brain at the door. But it works for me because at that time, she (and we) didn't truly know what an angry gargoyle was capable of. Maybe Goliath would dismember her."
It doesn't work for me because:
  1. If Fox fears Goliath to be a savage beast ready to dismember her, why would she think taking a (human) hostage would stop him?
  2. Wouldn't Xanatos have told Fox about Goliath sparing him at the end of Awakening?
The fight ends (with a bit of an anti-climax, to be honest) and we're back at the Castle. Goliath quotes Lexington's previous speech about the fact that they need to "search for allies, kindred spirits... and sometimes we must take chances like we did tonight", which is nice - but doesn't quite work for me because we never actually saw the Gargs do those things in later episodes: yes, they collected a few more human friends along the way, but they never actually went searching for them, unless I'm forgetting something.
We end things with the first Xanatos Tag:
OWEN: "Everything was done as you stipulated, sir. The cable tv was adjusted so that the only program the Gargoyles could see was the Pack's; the Pack received the mysterious envelope of photographs and reacted just as you predicted. A pity nothing else happened according to plan."
XANATOS: "Oh, I wouldn't say that, Owen. Though they didn't know it was me, I created the Pack to be far more than just a tv show; I had to see how good they were. And having underestimated Goliath once before, I needed to know what he was capable of as well. All in all, I'd say the test was most... informative."
Wow. That sucks. There will be some great Xanatos Tags in the future, but the first one's horrible:
  1. You needed to see what Goliath was capable of? After you saw him smash your Steel Clan robots and emerge unscathed from an air fortress full of armed guards? How are five human mercenaries a bigger challenge than that?
  2. Using the Gargoyles to test the Pack sounds very unfair to the latter - you don't "test" people by sending them against the biggest threat around.
  3. The scene becomes even worse in hindsight, once you learn that, because of David's little test, his One True Love ended up in prison; truly, a victory for the ages.
Final verdict: ok. Not one of the best, but ok.
RANKINGS:
  1. Awakening Part Four
  2. Awakening Part One
  3. Awakening Part Two
  4. Awakening Part Five
  5. The Thrill of the Hunt
  6. Awakening Part Three

2023.06.08 00:01 Negative_Fee1975 Why Heidi lost Big Brother last week

Hi there, I’ve never posted before, only commented once, but I feel like there’s an argument involving the Heidi/Jimbo/Kandy alliance’s downfall that no one is talking about. This post isn’t going to be about who’s right and who’s wrong. This is going to compare the situation to playing Big Brother, and why Heidi ultimately made a very bad decision. I’m gonna make some Big Brother comparisons to support my points, oops, sorry about it.
In Big Brother, information and when you choose to reveal it are two of the greatest skills you can have. I’m going to run through two scenarios, one where Kandy didn’t come for Jimbo, and one that did.
So let’s say Kandy never came for Jimbo, or that there was a misunderstanding, and Heidi is the one stretching the truth. It is still very early on in the season to make two people in your final 3 turn on each other. Heidi would still have Lala as a vote, but there’s not much she gains from losing Kandy. Jimbo is obviously the bigger threat, so giving your biggest competition false tea in order to shift the target to Kandy, ultimately I don’t see how Heidi benefits from this at this stage in the completion. Let’s say Jimbo wins episode 9, and Heidi/Kandy are in the bottom. That is the EXACT time to drop a lie about Kandy, similar to AS5 India/Shea, but because Jimbo/Heidi had an alliance there’s more trust built than them to actually sway Jimbo.
But what if Kandy did say that about Jimbo? Well for starters, again it’s just way to early to start making Kandy and Jimbo turn on each other. I assume that while the cast were friends with Jimbo, they all must’ve been having similar conversations without her when cameras weren’t rolling. I feel as if no one would’ve brought those convos up to Jimbo, because why would they? It’s the elephant in the room. They all want Jimbo out, they aren’t idiots. Except…Heidi? Heidi could’ve had two different shields for elimination in her alliance, Jimbo/Kandy, that both could go home next to her if in a bottom 2 situation. She’s outperformed Kandy, and Jimbo is Michael from BB24, winning way too much to not be a target. I think Heidi didn’t expect Jimbo to confront Kandy about her, because Heidi spilling that tea only benefits her if she’s NOT discovered. Well, she got caught immediately, no one trusted her anymore, and she self-evicted like Paloma because she knew there was no way out of the game she laid out.
Maybe I’m completely off base! Regardless, she clearly made her mind up in episode 3 to leave, the producers went “oh, yeah whatever plan we had will now shift into you never winning anything”, and her emotions led her to very sloppy social game moves. She effectively chose to target Kandy instead of Jimbo for some reason, or at least how I perceived it. Would love to hear if anyone else has opinions on how Heidi could’ve benefited from her speaking to Jimbo, from my perspective it just didn’t make sense at this point.

2023.06.08 00:00 Brodator O Block UHC Season 2 - Episode 6 [Finale]

O Block!

O Block UHC, Organized by jimmyjegs and omnikron, considered the most up-and-coming round by those known and unknown, O Block UHC aims to spread Chief Keef's music and ideas to yet another audience.
Chief Keef's second album, Back From The Dead serves as the inspiration for coincidentally the second season of O Block UHC. This season, players are able to be brought back from the dead by way of their teammate interacting with Fortnite-inspired reboot vans. O Block UHC's unique gameplay once again provides a mashup between Chief Keef's music and UHC that can only be for the better.

2023.06.07 23:50 strawberryskyz Can someone explain please?

I’ve watched Riverdale from S1-S6, I can’t bring myself to watch S7. The show has drastically gone into some campy,parody-like show that I just don’t have any desire to watch these characters back in high school in the 50s. I’ll probably only watch the final episode just to see how it all ends but what’s going on thus far in the season? if you don’t mind sharing a few things. Any signs of the Riverdale when they were normal characters?
