How Do You Model This Type Of Motion? (Inverse Arc)

2023.03.25 02:21 ButterBiscuitBravo How Do You Model This Type Of Motion? (Inverse Arc)

This is a problem I'm having while programming a game but this is purely a physics problem.
I've drawn a diagram of the problem, attached below. I'll explain the diagram here. There is an object moving in a linear path and at a constant speed (marked by the pink dashed line). I've marked the start position and end position of the object.
Now there is a blue tall container which contains a green circle inside it. The green circle's default resting position is right at the bottom of this blue container. However you can assign a length value to it, and that will push it up from its origin (the origin is the yellow dot). The longer the length, the more it will get pushed up. Let's call this length the " cushion length ". The yellow dot is also the rotation pivot point of the blue container.
Now here's the situation: As the pink object moves in its path, the blue container will rotate and track the object. This part is fine. I now have to model the green circle's motion so that it always stays on aligned on top of the pink object.
If I keep the green circle at a fixed cushion length, you can see that it will follow an arc pattern (represented by the green arc). But this is not what I want. It has to stay aligned with the pink object. Which means I will have to keep changing the cushion length throughout this motion.
My initial solution for this was to draw a line from the origin (yellow dot) towards the pink dashed path in a way that it will be perpendicular to the pink dashed path. And then I have to measure 3 lengths. The radius from the yellow dot to the start position, the radius from the yellow dot to the end position, and then the radius from the yellow dot to the position where it will hit the path at a perpendicular angle (which will be somewhere around the middle of the path).
Once I have these 3 lengths, I simply have to program the cushion length to interpolate between these lengths and the green circle should match up with the pink object right? But it does not happen. it does not maintain alignment throughout the animation.
I'm just wondering but how is this unique type of motion studied in physics? Does it have a name? It seems to be following an inverse arc. I have also drawn purple lines between the arc and the linear path of the pink object. I think this would come in handy? If I take the initial cushion length of the green circle and subtract these displacements, would that work?
What kind of equation do I use to model the green circle's motion? Or the purple displacements?
Would appreciate any help!

2023.03.25 01:33 IKnowMeNotYou Update: Going full time!

I got lucky today. They ended the project, I was an integral part of this week and today they told me that they will end my contract in 5 weeks. Since I do not need the money and only extended the contract to see what happens to the project in the first place - just personal research you know - I would have ended the contract right on the spot, but who am I to tell them what to do. I was not allowed to during the project and so it quickly turned into a death march almost right after we started. So lets get paid some more for the cruelty that is todays software development where you have all the responsibilities and no authority along with getting some lies served ice cold over and over again... .

I do not want to bore you with a too much detailed update but let me mention some key points:
---
What has happend since the last update?:
* I trained a certain family of setups which mostly play themselves out around 11:00 till 12:15. Since it is not sanctioned by the Wiki (it is aiming at price corrections), I can not post most of my trades in the reddit live chat.
* I continued to integrate the content of the Wiki into my main knowledge collection but not having much time the last weeks I am still not finished.
* I started to study the articles and the ebook of oneoption one sentence at a time while turning those into maps and diagrams. Once I am done I will merge those with my main knowledge base as I did with the Wiki.
* I collected more and more RealDayTrading articles I want to read and mine for gold but again barely having any time and priority it is hard to catch up and get ahead of the ever growing list of articles to read.
* I started to watch the complete catalog of both Hari's and Pete's Youtube videos. Great stuff but also time consuming as I take a lot of screenshots and notes. I also pay attention to the small things and especially the used language (instantly liked the L+/- and U+/- notion!).
* I still do stupid stuff as expectable but my hatred towards Trading View grew substantially. My whole workflow is sometimes a mess thanks to something being wrong with multi layout multi tab setups and loading and saving those dynamically. (Maybe using the desktop version would help?)
* I have founded my Tradier account after it got suspended.
* I got used to OSP and love the scanners. Wish I would have get it early (Tradier's account approval process took its time as I missed an email and their UI was not telling me about anything being at miss).
* I incooperated TradeXChange news and since enjoy the morning and after market wrap up along with the live news. The UI is dated and the full text search in broken. I will most likely downgrade the subscription level thou as I do not get live wire working but before I will try once more and ask support.
* I still do not stalk the live chats (reddit and oneoption) just to not get into the game of copy trades and to see if I can make it on my own.

Plan for the next 5 weeks (before being freed from wage slavery once again):
* I want to read the option related book promoted by the Wiki to slowly build up the necessary knowledge to get into options some months down the line, I also want to visit the option knowledge outlined in the Wiki and oneoption and extend my main knowledge base. Also Pete's and Harí's videos will continue to add to this as well.
* I will focus on my own software I created based on my data subscription with Nasdaq. I collected 140+ days worth of data and want to automate most of the things I do to analyze my setups and trades. Goal is to run my own extended live scanners, annotate charts my Alpaca orders, draw trend lines and functional components and more importantly to use these annotations to compile statistics. The final goal is to support research and actual trading decision making along with replacing Trading View and TC2000 in my current workflow.
* I want to do at least two trades daily between 11:15 and 12:15 just to have a practical component. Those again will most likely not be sanctioned by the Wiki and therefore will not be published. It is just to keep my routine of reading news, earnings, analyzing and predicting the market movements, select some stocks and do some trading alive and well. I just want to maintain being aware of each day's market movements.
* I want to daily spend 1-2 hours on studying and learning along with extending my notes. This also includes 2-4 hours each weekend day.

For the three months of full time training and studying
* I want to trade the full spectrum of the setups that the Wiki advices for, along with what else I myself am comfortable with. At this point I will publish the trades that are sanctioned by the Wiki either in form of a weekly journal and/or in the live reddit chat to make me open for being ridiculed and also to keep me aware and honest.
* I will further improve my software and my statistics.
* The goal is to really get all the (statistical and actual) data that I need to trust what I do to be beneficial allowing me to do what I do without doubt and hesitation.
* I will reduce my study time to only take place during the weekends.
* I will focus on my trading routine which will include proper sleep cycles, relaxation habits, journaling and reviewing.
* I plan to play the whole trading day (morning, lunch and afternoon) but excluding the first 30min and last 15min.
* I will start paper trading swing trades.
* I might fully transition to 1k positions once I have proven that my win rate remains to be stable within the first 6 weeks.
* I will try to do some research projects on the weekend including having a look into financial and options related data.

After the three months:
* If I can clearly see a way to further improvements including the money making part, I will add another three months worth of my savings to full time training and trading. If not I will secure myself another 6 month contract.
* I will decide if I will continue to subscribe to TotalView data or replace it with a cheaper but less detailed market data offering.
* I want to go 1 share with my swing trades if past performance permits.
* I want to start paper trading options.

I need this missing piece where to get it? is Daiwa BG 5000
Hello everyone!
I'm a fishing enthusiast and I'm hoping to get some help from fellow Reddit users who are also into fishing. I have a Daiwa 5000 BG spinning reel and I'm trying to find the small piece that goes on the spool where you attach the end of the line to prevent it from slipping out. I lost this small tab and I can't seem to find it anywhere. Unfortunately, it's not listed in the parts diagram on the Daiwa website.
If any of you know where I might be able to find this small piece, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share any information you might have.
Thank you in advance for your help!

2023.03.24 23:53 lockbotCRM Craftsman Lawn Tractor - Electrical Issues

Bought a Craftsman Model #247203740, it needed a new wiring harness. I replaced the harness with a used OEM part from eBay ( #725-04432G), came with a solenoid. Everything is connected correctly per the manf. wiring diagram. New battery. Every time I connect the battery, it sparks and the 20A fuse blows immediately. I see nowhere the should be causing a short. No exposed wires, all plugs are tight. Suggestions and help troubleshooting are appreciated. TIA.

2023.03.24 23:40 SirSaif Passed my CFI Initial Checkride!

Passed my CFI Initial Checkride!
Passed my CFI Initial Checkride Today! It was a lot of work and studying. I want to thank the folks in this sub for helping me with advice and guidance. u/TxAggieMike absolutely went above and beyond in assisting me with teaching some lessons as well the finer details. Shout out to you sir! I will include the write up below.
https://preview.redd.it/wdnwr3krlrpa1.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e1d53b7fc821e2703b864458fb01b185f39dc4c
Oral:
Started with all the basic paperwork and endorsements which was all good. Some of the first things we went over was FOI's and professionalism. This was very much a conversation and I didn't really repeat things from rote memory. He asked me if I've ever had more than one CFI which I did and he asked me to identify some of their pros and cons as well as what kind of a student I was throughout my PPL, IR and CPL. I tied this together with Professionalism and mentioned how I would like to be the kind o CFI who exhibits those behaviors and principles. I also went over all the different responsibilities and he asked me what I would be looking for in a student ready to solo. I told him I would be looking for the student to fly with a level of consistency and accuracy with little to no input from me. He suggested I get a handheld radio because it can be comforting to the student if they start to get a little uncomfortable in the pattern. He talked about a story where a student solo pilot got a little spooked from all the building traffic and just flew away and landed in a field (plane and pilot were unharmed). We had a laugh about that. To emphasize his point, it would good practice to have a radio handy.
He also asked me about the difference between an aviation instructor and ground instructor. Then we talked briefly about Assessments and Critiques since one of my knowledge test deficiencies was on this. I talked mainly about how most of the critiques I would be giving would be oral but also talked about the benefits to a written critique. We moved on shortly after discussing this.
He then asked me about my medical certificate (1st Class) and he asked me about the expiration date and what happens after that. I talked about how it still remains a 1st class but the privileges are what changes. I proceeded to explain the remaining validity for the medical and he was satisfied. I think he wanted to see if I understood the main point about the class and the associated privileges.
We spent some time on Runway Incursion Avoidance. I listed out all of the main ingredients but he added that I should utilize graphics and videos to emphasize how serious it can be. We talked about Tenerife as well as some more recent cases. I defined Hot Spots and showed him where to find the information on it in FF. He said he spends an entire hour teaching Runway Incursion Avoidance.
I taught 3 lessons. The first one was seemingly the easiest but I was tripping up a little. He asked me to draw the different legs of the traffic pattern which I did but then he asked if I was sure these were the legs? I started to scratch my head a little and then he asked where I could find out more info. I said the AIM so I cracked it open and looked at the diagrams. I was looking at the diagrams with more complex runways and was getting a little lost in all the verbage and labels. I flipped back one page and there it was. I had confused Upwind leg with Departure leg. For some reason, I think it got lost on me that these were two different legs when I thought they were interchangeable names. So I corrected my drawing and will never forget that. I was sweating a little here (not literally).
Taught weight and balance. Listed out the terms, defined them. Explained effects of more weight vs less weight as well as fore/aft cg. I used the loading graphs (way i was always taught) which is the longer way to do it. And one of my numbers were off by enough to put out CG right on the limit which seemed odd because it wasn't a complex scenario. So I went back through the numbers and he asked if there was another way to get the moments besides the loading graph charts. I said I would use the Arm measurements and when I did, I was off on my baggage moment by a whole 1000. SO i adjusted and it moved the CG back just over an inch, then it made sense.
Next I taught Airspace. This was relatively straightforward, I didn't really have any hiccups here.
We talked about logbook entries and endorsements. He didn't give me any complex scenarios and he asked me where I could look to find out about Endorsements, 61-65H. He had me fill out an IACRA and put in all the required hours for a PPL because he said while my cert is processing I wouldn't be able to do it through IACRA. So I crack open the FAR and jot them down. After that he emphasized that its important to write down the specific FAR in the remarks for whatever training you are doing because if anything comes back on you, you'd be covered. I added to this that when doing stall practice, you should write "stall RECOVERY" and he seemed to agree with that.
I taught a maneuver lesson which was short field landing and covered the ACS standards for Private and Commercial. No biggy here.
We talked about my syllabus. I purchased backseat pilot, while it has a ton of info, I felt more comfortable with wifiCFI. I like the layout of the syllabus and the interactivity of the ground school. He asked about various things and I would point to where you could find it within WifiCFI. He found it to be pretty intuitive and even called his son (new CFI) and I explained it to him over the phone. Haha. He then emphasized that if I'm going to use a syllubus, make sure to actually use it but keep it flexible. I don't think he's seen or heard of WifiCFI but I think he really liked it.
Since it was absolutely raining in sheets and it was IFR at the field we did not go fly. We wrapped up the ground by creating a plan of action for out flight. We went through the remaining portion of the PTS and he wrote down the required task and then had me choose the "other" task. This was very generous of him. I think he was shot for time on the day of the flight because he had another checkride after me so we just made the flight efficient as possible. I got a letter of discontinuance and we had the flight this morning.
Flight:
Our plan of action was listed as follows and It was honestly pretty uneventful. Flew everything within standards and it helped tremendously that it was early, it was cold and the air was buttery smooth. No wind at all after a week of crazy storms.
-Preflight Inspection
-Normal Takeoff
-Traffic Pattern/Rectangular Course
-Normal Landing
-Short Field Takeoff
-Straight and Level
-Slow Flight
-Steep Turns (Private and Commercial)
-Chandelles
-Power On Stall (First Indication)
-Elevator Trim Stall
-Emergency Approach to landing
-Eights on Pylons
-Systems Malfunction (He mainly just questioned me on high oil temps and carb icing)
-Soft Field Landing
-Postflight Procedures

I gotta say I felt like I lucked out a little. The ground portion was definitely the hard part but I came prepared and that why in some instances it felt easy, but just have your material ready and know how to use it and where to find things. He didn't teach me anything, but I sure learned some things along the way.
He printed out my cert and asked me "did you teach me a lesson today?" I said yes and he pulled out a $1 bill and wrote on it "Congratulations on earning your initial CFI on March 24th, 2023. Remember, The buck stops with you!" Then he said "Don't spend it at the strip club." 😂

2023.03.24 21:59 chcaban PT80 air pistol leaking pressure

Got out the old pistol to discourage some varmints. Pistol works fine except the new CO2 cylinder leaks down to nothing right away. Pulled the cylinder out and found little pieces of the black rubber seal stuck to the perforated end of the cylinder. I looked in vain for parts info. No luck. I cleaned out the recess where the perforating spike is and put a USA type 007 O-ring (0.28" OD) in the recess. It must be somewhat thicker than the original seal because I really had to crank down on the cylinder tightening nut. Shoots fine and no evidence of fast leak. I wonder why the parts diagrams and parts for sale do not address this issue.

💲 B B B Y 💵 The math reveals that the Buy Out (i.e. the friendly acquisition [i.e. the takeover of Bed Bath and Beyond]) has already been completed

$BBBY is beginning its move up: the new trend has merit.

Undisputed Facts

As GameStop investors question why the company has not released its 10-Q, I figured I would analyze the matter regarding developments regarding that 10-Q, since the 10-Q delay like this routinely implies a buyout is taking place, or has already taken place.
Everyone knows what Ryan Cohen previously asserted: Towel stock's ($BBBY's) Buy Buy Baby asset that he was interested in, right now, should be valued at $1 - 2 Billion. But what about the total value of Towel Stock assets (including its legacy liabilities) combined?
Note that this analysis is independent of other popular facts: that the company still sells $6 Billion in product on an annual basis, that its price to sales analysis shows the company should be worth an order of magnitude more, completed expenditures reduction, exponential e-commerce growth, shipping upgrades to allow for 1day shipping already (this also happened with GameStop). This analysis also ignores Buy Buy Baby's valuation. That discussion no longer matters. Here's why:

Upcoming Developments

As we know, major questions about mergeacquisition and HBC being a proxy of sorts. Share recall and split is common for a dilutive acquisition that has already completed. The DD on why HBC would politely abide until April 3rd, from today's Towel Stock filing, means that April 3rd is very special. It evidences that they know and have every reason to expect that Towel Stock will be above $1.00 again already by that time. Yet, there are 6 open-market investing days until that point.
Towel Stock is undergoing a share date of record on Monday the 27th (fascinatingly, this came quick) for an upcoming split vote. A lot can happen regarding the date of record for voting on the split. The filing says even if the vote passes, it may not be enacted (gee, I wonder what type of acute price action could render such a reverse split as unnecessary???). on Monday the 27th, and between now and that April 3rd date of further capital injection, droves of data points to a possibility that the true buyer could be revealed in that time.
Ryan Cohen joined Dragonfly sometime around July of 2020. He has been working on this a long time.Seeing the board stepdowns by Brett Icahn (i.e, apple not falling far from the tree) and Dragonfly (the profit-making squad) could be another giveaway. Nevertheless, Towel Stock's survival curiously mimics GameStops. After all, Towel Stock is still continuing operations after it was the subject of a historic MSM attack with financial managers falling from buildings. GameStop's and Towel Stock's survival does speak for itself. Yet, why has Towel Stock survived? How did they survive? Let's take a look.
So there we were - when media outlets were chanting Bed Bath and Beyond "CoUlD FiLe FoR BaNkRuPtCy bY ThIs WeEkEnD." It didn't happen: and now nearly 60,000 of those investors are sync'd up in their own stalwart room. I have never before observed such a high rate of user growth for a subreddit. It could be higher than SuperStonk's initial rate of user runup. Anyway, I digress. Let's dig:

From Towel Stock's Recent Filings:

March 8th, 2023: "the Company has received an aggregate of $135.0 million of proceeds from certain exercises of the Preferred Stock Warrant, most recently reflecting the aforementioned $87.5 million of proceeds (the “March Proceeds”) received on March 7, 2023, for an aggregate amount of $360.0 million of proceeds received by the Company since, and including $225.0 million of proceeds received in connection with, the closing of the previously announced public offering of certain of the Company’s securities on February 7, 2023" Essentially, they're saying $225M + $135M = $360M (a third of a billion in cash added on top of their cash on hand)
March 13th, 2023: Until April 3rd, 2023. In addition, the Threshold Share Amount referenced in the Price Failure definition is increased to 24,739. This amendment will further facilitate up to $100 million of additional funding in April 2023, for a cumulative total of $460 million to date in extra cash.
The simple calculation for net asset value is outstanding shares x share price. And if the most recent share outstanding report is accurate, then the net asset value is currently above a quarter billion dollars already.

The Friendly Takeover

https://preview.redd.it/idpwl4i5aqpa1.png?width=888&format=png&auto=webp&s=afbd25942340d6af11d432e04f7b282c1c7584d6
Shares outstanding after this offering is complete is based on a changing volume weighted average price (VWAP). Currently, 335,404,588 x $0.7861 = $263,661,546.62 market cap. After the offering, assuming (for whatever reason) the company stayed at $1.00. We'd end up with just about $0.5 Billion market cap, at around 450,000,000 shares. At a reduced stock price only due to these obvious buyout mechanics, the company will have about $0.8 Billion in liquid cash, with a $0.5 Billion market cap.

https://preview.redd.it/bu2znltaaqpa1.png?width=784&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d4ac9d8bffbc8c30c1d7bee03834a27a2bb1c97
Referencing the diagram above, if all previous owners of Towel Stock represent 1, then today there are a total of 3 owners (2 new, 1 old). In 7 business days or so, there are 4: (1 old, 3 new). The definition for this is an already-completed dilutive acquisition. This explains why the freely-transacted float did not change upon the news of the 335k shares the other day versus 116k shares, and why costs to borrow to short have only gone up since the buyout.
Yet, the 'before and after' math, in the shares and market cap totals, prove a bona fide buyout and takeover of the whole company by raw share ownership. The buyout has already fundamentally occurred. This is prima facie evidence of new ownership. By April 3rd, the new owner(s) will get a tad more shares, and then the company will already be at $0.5 Billion in market cap and with about $0.8 Billion in raw cash in-hand.
$BBBY investors today are already now part of the new Bed Bath and Beyond
Yes, this is independent of all of the other M&A indicators that came, like GME pulling its credit, Towel Stock hiring of kirkland and ellis, hiring M&A specialists, hiring power of attornies, the RSAs and vested shares, buying out the Towel Stock board's shares, Towel stock having the same lawyer team as GMERICA, recent icahn/dragonfly board dropouts, etc etc.

https://preview.redd.it/lsuc2h3caqpa1.png?width=3272&format=png&auto=webp&s=beb00d83feeb7ea551c8fbbbc39287ad5d05bf8c

https://i.redd.it/cs08q6tcaqpa1.gif

TLDR:

By math, Towel Stock ($BBBY) has already been Bought Out via a completed friendly share takeover: now 2 new owner(s) in relative share count to the 1 joint/previous shareholders.

The new owner(s) currently own about a 2:1 share majority. After April 3rd, the new owner(s) will own about a 3:1 share majority. About half a Billion dollars inked the deal.

GameStop is a stones throw away from HBC, and the fact that GMERICA's attorney IS the Towel Stock attorney is also the giveaway of the association of who bought it out. GameStop's board members are clearly involved, as is Brett Icahn, due to the proximity in timing of Chang, Day, Pulte, Icahn, and Cohen board movement.
Out of respect for the company, I don't want to get ahead of their official announcement. Yet, since GameStop is clearly involved, by several facets, this prima facie evidence of a takeover indicates bona fide company strength of GameStop Corp, AND/OR it indicates clear company strength of GameStop's associated individual board members.
Good luck to all, and I appreciate each and every one of you. Other hubbub on this no longer matters: the deal is done, and HBC was the proxy to conduct business. Perhaps it really is time, to march hand-in-hand with each of you, into the Beyond. Welcome to the new Bed Bath and Beyond.

2023.03.24 18:35 Huge-Wasabi-8353 need advice on oversensitivity

i have no clue how to word this or where to begin, but basically, because of a mix of childhood trauma, lack of sex ed and sensory issues, i’ve been terrified of my own genitals for pretty much all my life
the scariest thing by far has been touch. i wasn’t able to touch my pussy for years: i couldn’t wipe after peeing, i couldn’t clean, i couldn’t masturbate or explore in any way that involved my hands. i also could never look at it
things only started changing recently. at 20 i held a mirror between my legs for the first time, started to google vagina diagrams, tried to understand what was going on, etc. it makes me feel like a child that just started learning about their anatomy. i can manage to take care of my hygiene now, although some parts of it are still overwhelming
right now, i struggle the most with my hands directly touching my genitals. touching anything other than my outer lips feels overwhelming. trying to explore and try out things often ends with me getting very emotional and crying
i really want to get to a point where i feel comfortable touching my genitals. i wanna be able to touch my body like it’s mine. and the thing is that, whenever i try to look up anything related to this, i only find things that are wildly unrelated. it feels like i’m the only person to be going through this as an adult
is there anything i should be looking up? anything that might be helpful for me? has anyone else had similar experiences?

2023.03.24 18:02 tophneal 86 CB700SC - Where to find pigtail/connector to starter solenoid

My poor bike has certainly seen better days. In a renewed vigor to get it back on the road, I have a few things to fix. The first being the starter solenoid. I just purchased one online, through my local stealership, but have another issue: the pigtail to the solenoid had its connector cut off when an aftermarket solenoid was installed. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might be able to find and purchase a replacement pigtail/connector?
If not, I'd settle for being able to figure out the exact pinout of which wire goes where on the solenoid. Fortunately when the connector was cut off, it was replaced with individual female blade connectors, so it should still be able to attach to the new one to any replacement, as long as I know the correct wiring. Unfortunately, the wiring diagram in the shop manual is flattened and no help in determining the actual placement of each wire in the 2x2 connection, in relation to the physical part.

2023.03.24 16:40 daduka1999 Interested if there exists diagrams of Subaru vehicles with part numbers

I bought a damaged 2022 Forester Wilderness and wanted to buy parts from parts.subaru.com. The problem is that the website is offering me parts that are compatible but not unique to Wilderness trim. Is there any way to check exactly which parts are for Wilderness trim?
E.g. on the above mentioned website there are three types of bumpers when I choose my vehicle. Despite the fact that Wilderness has a unique bumper, the website tells me that other trim bumpers are also compatible. I think just because they can be mounted. I want to know a part number of a bumper that is exactly designed for Wilderness. And this goes for other parts too.
Hope I have explained everything, thanks in advance!

2023.03.24 15:35 scarymaxx I once gave feedback to a rival writer. Twenty years later, I paid the price.

I woke in a well-lit basement covered in wall to wall inspirational quotes. Literally every surface was filled with them. Most were posters, but some of the words were simply written in sharpie, filling in the gaps where nothing else would fit.
“We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.” - Ernest Hemingway
“When your story is ready for rewrite, cut it to the bone.” - Stephen King
“Good stuff,” said a voice that I almost recognized. Then I turned around and saw him. It had been maybe two decades, but he looked basically the same, just a pound or two pudgier.
“Anthony McCann?”
“So the great Elliot White actually recognizes me after all these years,” he said, a little too impressed with himself. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. After all, you did say my story had promise.”
I tried to get up from the chair I was sitting in and realized my hands and feet were ziptied in place. The more I writhed, the tighter my bonds became.
“I said what now?” I asked, trying not to betray my growing sense of panic.
Anthony grimaced now, then raced to his laptop, pulling up a scanned image of a marked-up manuscript with a few of my handwritten notes on it. He held it up to my face so that I could read it. At the end was a short handwritten paragraph:
Dear Anthony,
I think this shows a lot of promise. Joel is a character I definitely haven’t seen before, and Susan sounds like someone I’d maybe want to date if she were a little older. That said, I think this needs another draft or two to get ‘there.’ You might think about adding some details that makes Joel a little more likable. Right now he comes off as kind of a stalker, which I’m sure wasn’t your intention. I’m not saying he has to save a cat from a tree or something. Just a little self-awareness would help. I also circled a bunch of typos. Might want to run spell-check next time before you submit.
Peace out,
Elliot
I remembered the story now. I’d read it during the undergrad workshop we had together junior year. The piece was clearly autobiographical, even more thinly disguised than usual. To say the protagonist was a predator would have been an understatement.
“For a long time, I let it sit in a drawer, you know,” he said. “I might have given up on it. And then I saw your first book out at Barnes & Noble. Of course I bought a copy. You’re welcome by the way. Can I be honest? I’d give it a B+. Good for a first novel, I guess. Probably could have used another draft.”
“It’s not my favorite either,” I admitted. “But that was fifteen years ago. I’d like to think I got better.”
Anthony made a face. Then he absentmindedly pulled a sword from where it had been resting against the wall. He started doing some kind of bizarre martial arts move, possibly to intimidate me. In a way, they worked. I could imagine that sword going right through me. It was probably the kind of replica you’d buy at a mall, but I was sure it would still get the job done.
“Well, The Mermaid and the Pelican was definitely better,” he said. “Honestly, very few notes on that. I can see why it won all those prizes. I just have a few line-edits, but overall, A-minus. Maybe even an A. Of course, you followed that up with The Kitchen Sink Gang, which even you have to admit was total garbage. I figured you needed the paycheck. Still, embarrassing, right?”
“Anthony, what’s the point of all this?”
“The point!” he shouted. “The point is that I took your advice! About ten years ago, I got back to writing. Well, revising to be more accurate. I took your notes on my story to see if I could make it any better. I was like Oscar Wilde, adding a word in the morning, deleting it by sundown. Or at least, that’s what I thought. I sent it out to a dozen magazines, and you know what? All rejections. If I heard back at all.”
“It’s a tough business,” I said, trying to wriggle my wrists. The only result was that one began to bleed, the bonds tightening even more.
“It’s subjective,” he said. “That was the problem. But see, I’m a data scientist by trade. In my old position, I ran A/B tests for a game company. Group A would get one version. Then Group B would get something else with a few changes. Maybe a different color scheme or a different title. Maybe a different difficulty level.”
He paced around the room, gesticulating wildly as he spoke.
“So my scientist brain goes, aha! Maybe we can use that same methodology on a story. With enough trial and error, maybe it could even be the perfect story. Are you following?”
“I’m trying.”
He sighed, rubbing his eyes. Then he slammed his sword into the floor, where it stuck fast.
“What I’m saying is, while you were out there releasing basically unfinished drafts of your shitty novels, I’ve been here polishing. I revise, and then I run a test. I put two versions of the story up on social media then pay a nominal fee to display it to readers. I get maybe a thousand eyes on each version. Then, through some proprietary software of my own invention, I can tell just how far each reader got. Did they make it to the end? Get bored after the first paragraph? And of course, the ultimate question: which version did they like better?”
“It sounds impressive,” I said. “How did it go?”
“Well, you’re going to tell me,” he said. “You see, for the first twenty-two versions of the story, I saw fairly steady improvement. Then the next ten showed only minor upticks, sometimes even downward movement. Finally, over the last five versions it’s steadied out. My edits are down to one word here, another there. And it’s my scientific belief that it’s now the best story it can possibly be. Of course, as the author I can’t count on myself for an unbiased opinion. For that, I need a professional.”
“You want me to read your story?”
He nodded.
“As I said, I’m a scientist. All I want is your unbiased opinion. After that, you’ll be released unharmed. One thing though. Lie to me, and you’ll endanger the entire experiment, undoing over a decade of work. Lie to me, and I will kill you in an extremely unpleasant way.”
“Give me the story,” I said.
Ever so carefully, he approached me with a pair of scissors. For a second he hesitated, as if considering jabbing me in the throat. Then he snipped free my left wrist and quickly backed away, tossing a stapled printout of the story at me from a safe distance.
The story wasn’t long, maybe four thousand words. It had been over twenty years since I read the original, but the gist was still the same: Joel, a college senior, thinks of himself as a romantic idealist and tries to convince Susan, a high school sophomore to run off with him to Mexico, “where they can get married and live out their days on the beach, surrounded by an army of beautiful children.” The whole thing was pretty vomit-inducing.
I tried not to show any reaction as I finished the last word.
“Well?” he asked.
“It’s definitely a big improvement,” I said. “The flow is much better.”
“What about the part with the yellow roses? That was new. Did you understand the symbolism?”
“I don’t always get everything.”
“Of course not. There’s actually a lot of symbolism in here. I have some diagrams. But that’s beside the point. You liked it?”
“Yes,” I said, praying he wouldn’t see through me. “It’s hard hitting. The emotional effect is extraordinary. Just like all great writing should be.”
And in a way, it was true. The story truly was terrifying. If I’d seen it from a competent colleague, I might have even marveled at the way he captured its unhinged protagonist.
But in a deeper way, the story was shit. It had always been shit. It would always be shit. And what he’d been doing for the last decade was polishing shit.
And if I hadn’t been afraid for my life, I might have told him my real advice: to give up on it. This story was for practice. Maybe the next one would be better, and then the next one after that. Maybe he’d need to write ten thousand pages, and then finally, on the ten-thousand and first page, he’d actually produce something good.
That wasn’t to say revisions were worthless. Usually, they helped. You could go from okay to good. Even good to great. But sometimes, you just had a fucking trash fire, and no amount of fiddling with the garbage was going to save it.
“Extraordinary,” he muttered to himself, walking over and grabbing his sword. “Extraordinary.” Has I said the wrong thing? I imagined all the places where he might plunge the blade. Was he the sort of man who’d kill me quickly, slashing my throat or burying the steel in my ribcage? Or was he the cruel kind who’d want me to suffer, slicing open my stomach, watching me bleed out slowly.
“Anthony,” I said, ready to beg. “What I meant was–”
Then he clapped his hands and smiled.
He got out a sharpie and wrote on his wall, “The emotional effect is extraordinary, just like all great writing should be. -Elliot White”
“Promise you were telling the truth?” he asked one last time.
“Promise.”
“Then the next time you’ll be reading this is in my bestselling collection of short stories,” he said. “Once I write the rest of the collection, of course. For now though, I’ll release you to your drivel. Good luck trying to hit number one on the bestseller list again. You’re going to need it.”
I woke up in a wooded area behind a rest stop several states away from home. After a little explaining, the cops came to take me home. I tried to tell them everything I knew about Anthony, but they never did track him down. Maybe they didn’t really believe me.
After I got home, I took a week to just drink, take baths, and try to get my head on straight. It was even longer before I sat at a keyboard again, ready to finish the novel I’d been working on.
Yet when I actually started writing, I felt light. Free. Usually, I grind out fifteen hundred words a day, methodically laying one sentence in front of another until I hit word count. Now, it was like some untapped geyser in my head had begun to spew paragraphs one after another. I looked up after a week and found that the entire book was done.
When I told my agent it was ready, she told me her usual congratulations. Then she offered to give me a few more days to polish it up before she took a look.
“Okay,” I said after considering for a few moments. “But just for one more day.”

[Grade 12 Physics: Interference of Waves] Finding wave length with two sources?
its mainly questions (i) and (ii) that I am struggling with. Measuring the distance between sources and from the sources to the nodal points came easily, however I am not sure what they mean by calculating wavelength? I got the wavelength by measuring from crest to crest.
I included the question and my answer below to clarify:

2023.03.24 14:44 Smurphilicious How to create the Fae... almost

Before we jump in I want to make one thing clear.
Okay let's get started. Have you ever wondered why Pat included all of the parts about inertia and thermodynamics? Heat exchange, binder's chill, all of it? I've gone through and been collecting the pieces that I believe have to do with the creation of the Fae.
Let's start with the simplest piece. The iceless
I made my way around the corner of the bar and knelt to look at the iceless. It was a stone-lined box the size of a small traveling trunk... It was about as simple a piece of artificing as could be made. No moving parts at all, just two flat bands of tin covered in sygaldry that moved heat from one end of the metal band to the other. It was really nothing more than a slow, inefficient heat siphon.
Okay, simple concept very easy to grasp. But let's say you're building something not simple. Why is heat siphoning so important?
The technical term for it was “thaumic overfill,” but even Elxa Dal tended to refer to it as slippage.
“Smelled like pork,” Manet said grimly. “Damnedest thing. Felt bad for him of course, but you can only feel so much pity for an idiot. A little slippage here and there, you hardly notice, but he must have slipped two hundred thousand thaums inside two seconds.” Manet shook his head, not looking up from the piece of tin he was engraving.
“Thermal slippage is fairly common though,” Manet continued. “Now kinetic slippage ...” He raised his eyebrows appreciatively. “Twenty years back some damn fool El’the got drunk and tried to lift a manure cart onto the roof of the Masters’ Hall on a bet. Tore his own arm off at the shoulder.”
Manet bent back over his piece of tin, engraving a careful rune. “Takes a special kind of stupid to do something like that.”
Okay so. First of off, let's agree that Kvothe is definitely going to tear off his arm or hand in book three :D but aside from the lesson and examples, notice how Manet is engraving tin while he talks? Well that's actually why Kvothe needed to fix the iceless
I crouched down and rested my fingers on the tin bands. The right-hand one was warm, meaning the half on the inside would be correspondingly cool. But the one on the left was room temperature. I craned my neck to get a look at the sygaldry and spotted a deep scratch in the tin, scoring through two of the runes.
That explained it. A piece of sygaldry is like a sentence in a lot of ways. If you remove a couple words, it simply doesn’t make any sense. I should say it usually doesn’t make sense. Sometimes a damaged piece of sygaldry can do something truly unpleasant. I frowned down at the band of tin. This was sloppy artificing. The runes should have been on the inside of the band where they couldn’t be damaged.
The heat siphon broke because the sygaldry was damaged. I know what you're thinking. This is the simple part?! But you got this, trust me. Next part we need to cover is the volatile transporting agent: Regim Ignaul Neratum.
“Bone-tar?”
Kilvin donned a thick leather glove and decanted about an ounce of dark liquid from the metal canister into a glass vial. “It is important to chill the vial prior to decanting, as the agent boils at room temperature.”
“The pressure cap is also essential, as the liquid is extremely volatile. As a gas it exhibits surface tension and viscosity, like mercury. It is heavier than air and does not dissipate. It coheres to itself.”
Transport reactions are classified according to the thermodynamics of the reaction between the solid and the transporting agent. When the reaction is exothermic, then the solid of interest is transported from the cooler end
Okay now remember the Chandrian stepping into the black boiling fog of Haliax?
Then, each of the others turned with a studied ease and took a step toward Haliax, into the shadow surrounding him. But as their feet came down they slowed, and gently, as if they were made of sand with wind blowing across them, they faded away.
The Chandrian, the solids, stepped into the transporting agent. They became like sand as soon as they touched the fog, then they were gone. That's what was in the archways of the Waystone doors.
Then Ben was no longer there, and there was not one standing stone, but many. More than I had ever seen in one place before. They formed a double circle around me. One stone was set across the top of two others, forming a huge arch with thick shadow underneath. I reached out to touch it....
The Doors of Death, Doors of Stone. They all led to the Fae, connected all of the cities to each other. But remember what happens to bone-tar at room temperature?
“In addition to being highly corrosive,” Kilvin said, “in its gaseous state the reagent is flammable. Once it warms sufficienctly, it will burn on contact with air. The heat that this produces can cause a cascading exothermic reaction.”
“Cascading huge Goddamn fire,” Manet said.
So let's say you are angry. Let's say you are seriously pissed off, and you're looking for a little payback against a King. You decide you're going to topple this fool's entire fkn empire in one fell swoop. You "scratch the tin" that the sygaldry is on. You break the heat siphon that was keeping all of these Waystone portal doors chilled.
Boom. The cities, connected by these bone-tar portal doors, burst into flame as the bone-tar hits room temperature. Cascading huge goddamn fire. Because fk that guy, that's why.
But let's go back further. The world was created, then the Fae, then the moon stolen and the creation war began. So how does the moon fit in? Why steal it? Well because you've built yourself a perpetual motion machine. You've got all the pieces together, you've connected it all, but it needs ignition. You need to turn this puppy on somehow.
Let's cover the pieces first. Easiest to explain is the Fae itself. The Fae is like the firmament from the early hebrew conception of the cosmos. That's why we're given all these clues about Tehlu's hammer and His Path, the blacksmith crossing over first, forger of the Path. That's why it's called the firmament
Rāqīaʿ means that which is firmly hammered, stamped (a word of the same root in Phoenecian means "tin dish"!). The meaning of the verb rqʿ concerns the hammering of the vault of heaven into firmness
That's how the shapers created someplace new for themselves, to do as they willed. They created a road not for travelling, a barrier between worlds they could go through.
Then there were two worlds, two skies, but one moon all round and cozy. Look again to the firmament picture. Now remember that in the Fae, there are only two directions. There's no north, south, east and west. You walk towards night, or dayward. That's it. Then there's the descriptions of appearing as if underwater
For example, I remember Felurian in the purpling twilight. It dappled her through the trees, making her look as if she were underwater.
Dappled shade, feeling as if underwater when a Namer looks into your eyes. So now our world has an outer shell, a second world, an insulated tube filled with water. But again, there's no north, south, east, west. Only Night and Day. A two dimensional plane, a massive halo around the world.
Then someone has an idea. They're going to build an engine, an ever-lasting flame. Not just any engine, they're going to turn the world into a rotary engine using seven cities in a radial configuration.
The radial engine is a reciprocating type internal combustion engine configuration in which the cylinders "radiate" outward from a central crankcase like the spokes of a wheel.
But you need the pistons to fire. Do you remember how the arrowcatch works?
I gestured to a different diagram. “What I really needed was something that could push back against the arrow. And it had to push very fast and very hard. I ended up using the spring steel from a bear trap. Modified, of course.”
“First, the arrow comes close and establishes the binding. Second, the incoming arrow’s momentum sets off the trigger, just like stepping on a trap.” I snapped my fingers sharply. “Then the spring’s stored energy pushes back at the arrow, stopping it or even knocking it backward.”
“Both of my shots came from the same direction,” he said. “How was the second one stopped if that spring had already been triggered?”
“It hangs on a pivot ring,” I said.
The arrowcatch and our radial engine work the same. It looks like this. The only difference is that the arrowcatch uses bear trap springs that store the energy, then need to be manually reset.
But we think we're clever, as fools usually do. If we used the moon to fire the pistons, we wouldn't have to reset any springs. So clever. So thoughtless. So reckless.
Here's the thing about rotary engines.
Power increase also came with mass and size increases, multiplying gyroscopic precession from the rotating mass of the engine.
Uh-oh. So remember our massive halo ring around the world? Now it's looking something like this, gyroscopic precession.
Yeah that's not good, is it? Now we have to deal with the 'slippage' we talked about earlier because now our oh-so-clever engine has drawn this onto the world. It's called Coriolis force.
Looks familiar right? It should. That's the Great Stone Road.
That's all I've got so far. I'm not a scientist, and this goes into territory that I don't understand and don't know how to explain. I know the mentions of silver and mercury are references to Cox's Timepiece.
Cox claimed that his design was a true perpetual motion machine, but as the device is powered from changes in atmospheric pressure via a mercury barometer, this is not the case.
So Cinder's chill, and the heat coming off of Felurian and Denna are connected somehow. I'm sure that the Coriolis force portion also ties into meteorology, because it's the Name of the Wind and in meteorology
[Coriolis effect] is responsible for the rotation and thus formation of cyclones
The other part I can't pin down is the sumner, the Tehlin judge who comes to arrest Kvothe.
The man holding the parchment eyed Simmon calmly, then reached inside his cloak and brought out a stout iron rod with a band of gold around each end. Sim paled a bit as the grim man held it up for everyone in the room to see. Not only was it every bit as threatening as the constable’s cudgels, the rod was an unmistakable symbol of his authority. The man was a sumner for the Commonwealth courts.
Iron rod with gold band around each end sounds like a heat exchanger. Another reason I know it's connected to the Fae is because of the origin of the name Sumner
Thomas Hubbard Sumner (20 March 1807 – 9 March 1876) was a sea captain during the 19th century. He is best known for developing the celestial navigation method known as the Sumner line
It has something to do with the secret place where three roofs meet. Also,
The crater Sumner, and the nearby crater chain Catena Sumner, on the far side of the Moon, are named after him
Which connects to the Chain Dian, moon chains. Also I'm pretty sure that Haliax is meant to represent Maxwell's Demon.
One last note. The reason that even this version of a perpetual motion machine is impossible is because
These laws of thermodynamics apply regardless of the size of the system. For example, the motions and rotations of celestial bodies such as planets may appear perpetual, but are actually subject to many processes that slowly dissipate their kinetic energy, such as solar wind, interstellar medium resistance, gravitational radiation and thermal radiation, so they will not keep moving forever.
Not even the moon will go on forever. So the shapers built this machine, built their Paradise and Utopia thinking that all was well and that it would last forever.
But someone knew that it wouldn't last forever. Someone saw all the way down the line, and saw that it would all end in disaster, that the shapers needed to be stopped before they destroyed the whole world. It knows what is right, and acts for the greater good, is neither good nor evil. It is justice, the wind that turns the leaves and makes the branches sway.
“Reshi, the Cthaeh can see the future. Not in some vague, oracular way. It sees all the future. Clearly. Perfectly. Everything that can possibly come to pass, branching out endlessly from the current moment.”

Yeah that's not good, is it? Now we have to deal with the 'slippage' we talked about earlier because now our oh-so-clever engine has drawn this onto the world. It's called Coriolis force.
Looks familiar right? It should. That's the Great Stone Road.
Edit: I realize I forgot to explain why bone-tar works as the transporting agent for the Fae. Post is here.
Gold bands might be whatever is connected to the stones in the Lackless box. Maybe also using the moon as a heat spreader?
Another reason I know it's connected to the Fae is because of the origin of the name Sumner
Thomas Hubbard Sumner (20 March 1807 – 9 March 1876) was a sea captain during the 19th century. He is best known for developing the celestial navigation method known as the Sumner line
It has something to do with the secret place where three roofs meet. Also,
The crater Sumner, and the nearby crater chain Catena Sumner, on the far side of the Moon, are named after him
Which makes me think of the Chaen Dian, moon chains. I'm also pretty sure that Haliax is meant to represent Maxwell's Demon.

2023.03.24 07:50 Other-Borderlands J♣️ : Robin Hood [Capture the flag]

J♣️ : Robin Hood [Capture the flag]
J♣️ : Robin Hood [Capture the flag]
This game is part of a series of games, where I am writing games for all 52 cards for a borderlands in the UK. Each one includes a story of how I imagine the game playing out. You can find all entries here.
Venue: Castle
Player limit: Four
Rules: The castle is split into two sections, The jacks side, and the Player side. The Jack starts with 80% of the gold. Across two hours, players must steal gold from each other’s treasuries. Each team also has a jail, and if a player is caught in the wrong half, they are sent to the jail. If all players are caught, they get one free release. If it happens again it is game over for the team. If a player can get to the jail without being caught they can free one of their team members. Each team also has five keys. Keys can be given one each to each player, in total each team has an A, B, C, D, and M key. These can be used to lock and unlock doors of the same class throughout the castle. M can unlock any door.
While in the treasury players cannot be caught.
The Keys not used are stored in the base and can be stolen by an attacking player, instead of gold. Only two players may be left on defence, one at the prison/safe zone and one at the treasury. Players may only carry one gold item.
Violence is prohibited and punished by a shock from the bracelet.
Sixth Day of Exhibitions

Remaining Games
James sat outside the castle, a bracelet on his wrist, awaiting the opening of the gates. Next to him sat three more bracelets, in front of a sign, reading ‘take one. Four players are needed to begin.’
He sat for a few hours, watching the art of the card hanging from the blimp. The Jack of Clubs. He looked at the castle, it’s architecture, marvelling in a way he had never done before.
He heard someone approaching, and looked down to the familiar form of Ben walking up.
James looked at him, calling out “Looks like you’ve lost your security force!”
Ben walked up to the table, putting on a bracelet.
“I’ve lost a lot since we last met.” He said quietly, and quite uncharacteristically.
“Well there are two more chairs, you can tell me all about it while we wait for the other players.” James said.
Ben recounted his encounter with the Jack of Hearts, and James told Ben about the King of Diamonds.
It was clear Ben had been to a new low after losing the school, and had built his way back to some semblance of his former self’s confidence.
They waited until about three in the afternoon, before three figures approached.
“That’s… not possible…” Ben said.
“What a group of familiar faces!” James said, as they watched Mia, Alex and Ellis approach.
Ellis got there first, nodding to Ben, who nodded back. Mia walked up with Alex, and they explained their ordeal with the King of Spades.
“Well, it looks like we’ve all been through a lot. Maybe we can put the past behind us, and play one more game…” James suggested, holding up his wrist with the bracelet.
“There ain’t no way I’m playing another game after that.” Alex said.
“Well, if you ask me, I’m down for another crack at a face card game.” Ellis said, his familiar smile plastered over his face.
“Well, have fun waiting, cause I’m with Alex. There is no way you’ll catch me playing a game again, especially not with him.” Mia said, pointing at Ben.
“Come on Mia, remember how well we worked together in the nine of spades, and the oh aren’t getting out of here if you don’t beat this guy.” Ben said, pointing up at the picture of the Jack above them.
“Fuck off Ben. I’ve heard about the shit you’ve pulled since I ran off. I’m not joining the game.” Mia said.
“Look, trust me, I’m different now. Reformed if you will. Please, Just this one.” He said, offering her a bracelet.
“Fine. But just know I don’t think of you any higher than previously. I’m just joining to win.” Mia said, clicking the bracelet around her wrist.
The doors began to creak, opening.
They approached, cautiously, watching the sunlight streaming out from it.
Four figures approached, James estimated they weren’t much older than them.
“Look who’s come out to play….” The Leading one said.
“Jack!?” Mia said, in disbelief. “That’s not possible… You’re in hospital… The Crash…”
“Looks like Jack’s the Jack. And also here and recovered from his coma.” James noted, looking at Jack.
“Well, looks like I missed something.” The Jack said, before beconing them in.
“Ben, I’ve been watching your group intently for a while now, and seeing how you led. See, you and I took a different approach. While you chose to lead by force, I chose to lead with equality. Your approach ultimately failed, and you have only managed to gather a group to try and defeat me by humbling yourself. However, your efforts will likely be in vain. As you have learned, and we learned a few years ago, its kill or be killed. One of either groups lives must be sacrificed to continue the lives of the others. We thank you for the sacrifice you will likely make today. It’s nothing personal, don’t worry.” He said, walking in front, towards the centre of the courtyard.
Mia turned and looked at Alex, as the gates shut, obscuring her. It could likely be the last time either of them saw each other.
The Jack began to explain the rules as James surveyed the area, seeing a large screen with ‘player’ and ‘citizen’ written on it, with a large dividing line running down the centre, as well as through the castle.
The layout of the game showed the castle split into two halves, and He knew he was on the player side. He looked at his bracelet, flashing up five images of Keys, one labeled A, B, C, D and M.
When the Jack finished the rules they were told they would have five minutes to plan before the game began.
“So, the way the game starts, it’s impossible to win for us by playing defensive. We are forced to play offensive, but the Jack can only have two full defenders, slightly levelling the playing field. However, this means that the Jack, until we have around equal values of gold in our treasury, can just keep his team on their side as defence.” James said, drawing out a little diagram in the courtyard floor. “We are forced into playing offensive at this point, so that means we have to figure a way around the defence. Because defenders need to escort the people they catch to the prison, we could all run at once and make it past the first defenders here.” He pointed. “Then we arrive at the limited section of defence, where one player needs to run from where the prison is, as that will not yet be guarded. Because someone is running that way, those who are caught should try and stall for time. Then, one person should be able to make it into the treasury, and they simply need to sprint back to get us some gold. Then they can be caught, releasing everyone wit the free release. We can then think more carefully then with a levelled playing field.”
“But what about Keys?” Ben countered.
“Well, for us to need keys there must be locked zones. So, if we assign someone the M Key, and give the other person no Key, they can block a capture from the other team by stepping in front. SO If we give either Mia or Ellis the M key, I’ll take no key and go with them, leaving the other two with designated keys and two keys left at our base.” James suggested.
“Seems like a decent plan.” Ellis said, and they assigned keys, lining up at the centre line, watching the other two walk along it. He recognised them from his school. Ben wondered how they had gotten from the crash to here, they had been in critical condition when he went o the theatre, and now they were claiming to have been here for years… Perhaps it was aliens.
“The Game Has Begun.” The Voice droned, and They enacted their plan.
Ellis and James ran over, and one of the defenders tried to tag him. James jumped in front, getting sent to the prison. Ellis raced towards the door at the end of the courtyard, and he ran into the inside of the castle. He looked around, running through various passageways, before seeing a guard, and he quickly turned tail and ran. He watched Mia run in from the other side, into the room he was guarding, and pick up something large and golden. He kept racing, catching sight of her outside the window.
Ellis quickly jumped through the window to his right, landing with a shoulder roll, and sprinted towards Mia. He watched another defender running for her, and he pushed him out of the way. He was led to prison, and Mia cleared the line.
The gold total on the screen now changed, showing the player team now had 378 gold in their treasury, the citizen team having 622.
Mia took a deep breath, seeing that that incident had taken one sixth of the time, now having fifty minutes left. She was also the only uncultured member of her team. Getting caught would use up their only jailbreak, so it may be worth trying to free them.
Also, Mia knew that she could get to the prison with the Key she had, but wether they had changed the keys they had locked the doors with was unknown.
She walked up to the line, looking at the two defenders who were in the courtyard with her. She made a run for it, note vent making it to the courtyard wall before she felt a hand on her back. Her bracelet indicated she had been captured, and the screen announced that their whole team had been captured and that they have used up their one Jailbreak. All of their team were returned to their half.
“We can’t afford to do that again.” James said. “Because even if we manage to get an item of the same value to put us in the lead, we would only have one defender. No, we need to think of a stealthier strategy.”
“Well, the castle windows are quite close together. Someone with good arm strength, say Ellis, could climb around the outside, and into the treasure room. Then they could climb back with an item without the team realising.” Ben suggested.
“I recon I could do it…” Ellis said, walking over to look out the window.
“Well, good luck then.” James said.
Ellis climbed out the window, putting his feet on a lower ledge, keeping his hands on the ledge. He scaled his way around the outside, carefully moving one point of contact after the other, first his foot, then his hand, repeat. As he got further and further around the castle, the higher the gap between him and the ground became. He arrived at what he thought was the treasury, and pulled himself up, climbing in, and grabbing an easily carrialble item that seemed to be valuable.
He dropped back out of the window, alone of the defenders opened the door, and he began to climb around the outside. He heard someone running, and continued around the outside.
He stopped, feeling a pain on his hand.
“Hello Ellis. I’ve always wanted to do this.” The defender said, bringing his foot into Ellis’ face. He repeatedly did so, until ellis let go of the ledge.
Ellis fell, and the defender shot backwards, electricity coursing through his body. He lay there, and coughed a little, before getting up.. He hated Ellis. He had bullied him for years. Good riddance, he thought.
Ellis crashed down into the floor, has bones cracking, before the laser put him out of his misery.
James and the others watched as the screen showed the words ‘Elimination’.
“A player has been eliminated for leaving the game area.” The Voice announced.
James looked at the screen, showing their score hadn’t changed. 378 - 520.
This meant that Ellis must have been the one eliminated. James hung his head a moment.
He walked up to Mia and Ben, who were defending the base, informing them of the discovery.
They were sad, and they knew that they were now at a severe disadvantage. One player down, and in second place in scores.
James discussed a third plan with them.
“Well, we are at a serious disadvantage. We are one player down, and they can afford to play full defence. We have very few options.” James said, “I think we can try to use Mia to try and draw out the defenders, and then Ben can run in and grab the flag. It is risky, as it is four on one or two, but it seems like the only option.”
“Well, we don’t have many other options.” Ben said, looking at the timer on the screen, 20 minutes left.
Mia walked up to the line alone, as James and Ben walked their way through the castle, using their A and D keys to try and get through the castle. They arrived at a locked door, locked with a B key.
“Damn!” Ben said. They had to find another way around, and turned and walked up a flight of stairs.
Mia was on the line, talking to one of the defenders, asking for Jack.
Jack walked out, and one of the others walked back, taking his place.
“Well Mia. How nice to see you. We’ve not had a proper chance to talk yet, have we?” Jack said, and Mia looked at him.
“I wish I could say it was nice to see you, but the circumstances don’t allow for it.” Mia said. “So, why are you here?”
“Well, I am here because I am the Jack of Clubs, but that doesn’t sound like what you meant. In truth, I’m only here because I don’t want to die. Sounds a bit ironic, but in this world, we know life isn’t worth much. That means there is no god, no afterlife. Nothing. I can’t afford to go yet. I still have so much more to do with my life. I’m sorry we will have to sacrifice your life for ours.” The Jack said.
“I’m very sorry that I’ll have to politely decline.” Mia said, racing across the line.
Jack ran after her, followed by the other defender. She looped around, doing out of the way of his swipes, and rolled past him.
While this was happening, James and Ben had gone up a few floors, and worked through various locked doors. They arrived at the top of a staircase, guarded by another of the Jack’s guards. He didn’t seem to notice them.
Ben stepped out, shouting to him, “Catch me if you can Dustin!” Before bolting down the corridor, as James hid behind the door.
As they ran past, James ran through the door, locking it behind him. He continued down the corridor, towards the treasury of the Jack’s team.
He slowly descended the stairs, seeing a guard stood in front of the door. James knew it was a risk, but he climbed over to the window, and crawled into the treasury.
He grabbed a bag of small jewels, and climbed back up again, quietly. His arms hurt from pulling himself up, but he continued out towards the windows to the courtyard.
He spotted Mia still dodging attempts to catch her, and she caught his eye. She lead them as far away from the window as she could, before James jumped out, wincing as he landed badly. He got up, and was running.
He saw himself getting closer and closer to the line, and he jumped across it, before sprinting back to their treasury, gasping for breath, bent over, hands on his legs.
Mia came in later, informing him he had tipped the balance in their favour. Now all they needed to do was wait for the attack from the Jack’s team.
Mia was left guarding the treasury, while James went to guard the prison. There were five minutes left, when the Jacks team made a last ditch effort for the lead.
They ran all at once, trying to make it to the treasury. James and Mia managed to catch them all, and they sat together in the prison of the player team, as the last few minutes ticked down.
The Jack had turned to the wall, and was crying into his arms.
“I can’t die…” He said, tears streaming from his eyes. “Please, let us live. Please-“
His team mates tried to comfort him, but this was a difficult task in the face of death.
James spoke to their three captives as the time ticked down, James told him as well what he meant about the crash. "20 dead. 19 left in critical condition. Was on the radio as I left for school. We tried not to think about it, but..." He trailed off.
Jack changed the subject, ad they continued to talk, and James even managed to make Jack and the other laugh. It was as it was before. Before the crash, before they arrived here. But the laughter was hollow. The people who he were talking to were as good as dead.
“Well, I hope you use your well earned life w-w-isely.” The Jack stuttered.
James looked at him sadly.
The Laser ended the game, as the voice announced the game had been cleared by the players.
Ben, Mia and James walked out of the castle, as the blimp exploded behind them. The face burning and peeling, and they looked at the remaining games.
The King of hearts.
Ben told them he would go out and try to clear it, and James and Mia agreed to help him.
As they walked towards the Church above which the King of hearts blimp hung, an announcement rang out over the city.
“There is only one game remaining. The Game is the King of Hearts. To join, please make your way to the venue.”
James looked back one final time, seeing the crushed body of Ellis lying at the base of the castle.
He turned, watching the King of Hearts blimp in the distance.
The deck was almost complete.

2023.03.24 07:44 iRamHer Supporting and strengthening an in-use H beam.

edit: title would be better off saying: supporting and strengthening an in-use h beam against deflection: is my "lateral support" actually preventing torsional buckling, or just a horizontal beam preventing sag from long spans. I wasn't thinking, still somewhat not. sorry if that catfished anyone.
disclaimer: I am likely going to install a temporary full beam flange width post with steel base and probably 1/4" thick top cap regardless of what is figured here, until I can remedy the core issues. I would *like* to not have to do that as the movement isn't too too terrible, unless I find buckling or cracking when I tear into it, which I am not expecting to find. I am trying to keep this short and concise. I'm not looking for precise to the fraction measurements. I'm really looking for a, yes that design could have been viable in preventing flexural torsional buckling/twisting. I have no reason to believe there's any local or distrortional buckling, yet. Obviously, I will need to tear into it but my ADHD would like to know how much motivation I am going to need to start this and how much cursing I will be doing through out. I'm sure more information would be nice but at that point I'll only be posting the follow up result as it'll be tore into and did done.
Questions:
1.)This is my main question, as I am trying to attempt to tell my woman I tried to not use a post. Would a basic 2x4 wall (it looks like 1 jack stud, 1 king stud, 2-2x10 beam, connecting somehow to the steel beam, which is part of a 2x4 16" ocish center wall, not sure of what connectors if any used, be adequate to provide an H beam with the needed lateral support to prevent flexural torsional buckling? Or rather, does the intersecting 4x10 member provide any stability in this situation, or is it more likely that it is just a floor member support? I have yet to see how the beams are connected at the 4x10 side, but after seeing the beam side with scope, seeing the drywall in between? I believe I may be over assuming its function, but that could be a red herring of poor craftsmanship. Technically it doesn't show anything useful. Picture is included down below, you can see the 2x/osb/shim assembly aggressively pulled apart, starting at the top, as the beam pulled away due to twisting counter clock wise. Much more info below but as stated below: The H beam is 10" tall x 8.25" wide x 1/2" thick. The load is roughly 8000lb of brick and 8000 pounds of roof, no other load beyond external factors. The lateral support would've started at roughly 70" away from support post, not including bearing measurement. Viable lateral stay? or just a joist support? The 2-2x10 beam is needed for floor joist span support if nothing else.
2.)Would a sufficiently sized post wide enough to support the entire flange, positioned at the assumed lateral support location, alleviate the middle span stress and be positive towards the existing beams health, or would I most benefit from supporting the flange on ends fully? or both? Or should I crib the lower beam to help temporarily support the upper beam mid span? Or is there a reason I'm not seeing as to why the existing end posts do not fully support the beam flange, beyond possible lack of support underneath the post? I have more than enough foundation to support a 10x10 if I desired at the "lateral support" location.
3.)Would bricking in beam ends be a positive addition in this situation, or would I be better off considering welding end caps at minimum and calculating for bracing to help with torsional buckling? Just out of curiosity, I imagine tension and compression are distorting the ends/effecting bearing/span capacity.

The pictures included at the bottom may be a better story teller than this wall of text I'm trying to summarize. Back story before I ask my question because this is the ultimate solution that can't happen yet. I have a residential structure was remodeled in roughly the 90s. I am assuming during the remodel they did drainage, and the drainage was done with steel corrugated pipe, which is in the process of, or is, collapsed. I realize this is a situation that needs remedied, and will be bringing in a mini to do proper drainage within the next few months, I hope. As a result of said drainage, and the fact that the foundation is on a heavy clay, I have a lot of expansion and contraction, and thus erosion. After drainage I will be driving some sort of piers and likely adding to the footings. I understand this is the core of my issue and the ultimate fix, it can't happen yet.
AS A RESULT, i have 2 supporting walls that are roughly 0.2 ISH degrees off last time I measured. Those walls support a beam, that beam supports 2 posts, which supports another beam. I will need to support the lower beam as it has some twist in direction of load, and unfortunately I think the brick plate does not have enough weld to attach it to the beam, and it's starting to split due to someone modifying the beam by cutting a hole dead center, and removing brick, which seems to support a large slab above it.
The house is 60s era, I believe the beams were all installed in the 90s, I believe some got repaired sometime before I moved in. I lived in this house for roughly 7? years now, the beam when moved in, which is covered with drywall, had a crack roughly dead center starting at bottom flange and working its way up and back, showing SOME but not much deflection. I wasn't concerned at the time, it was another project. Well it's time to do the project and I've had more shifting, still within spec just estimating, but definitely needs remedied as it will keep moving due to circumstances. In before the "there's no way anyone on reddit can help you, you need to see a so and so engineer" yes. Sure. And I will eventually. Good luck finding one any time soon though. at least here. I build and work with a lot of wood and steel structures although I over build, especially with steel, since I have a lot, my calculations are more jazz unfortunately due to health concerns that have eaten my brain but I am recovering, although I am more into hydraulic assemblies now. This is in my wheel house, although I'm not able to think 100% at this point yet due to personal issues, I am very capable of carrying out a temporary support and longer term fix, eventually. I am playing around with ideas at this point though. "boy this sounds like you're in over your head". I would hope the beam stays in over my head. This is my goal anyways. Enough jokes.
The beam in question above it is also twisting the same direction, likely due to the posts favoring direction of load, the posts not fully supporting the flange closest to the load direction, what I am assuming is a lateral support has seperated, and I am assuming the beam being loaded off center promoting torsion, specifically at the center of span, which is just beyond where the lateral support is. As a result, and keep in mind this is just rough eye balling because I have not removed any drywall beyond the one end to scope out, and the drywall job is interesting, so I am wondering if everything was straight/ flush to begin with. I am under the assumption, the beam jobs were designed by an engineer. However, I am also pretty sure THIS specific issue was fixed once before, and was partially the reason it's happening now, because improper fasteners/material was used.
There's 4 pictures here:
  1. The basement a ROUGH not to scale diagram which includes 2 beams each color coded, each has 1 end that supports the upper beam's post, which is notated with shapes. not really concerned about them, though I think the one needs some love/brick plate wasn't welded properly and is spltting from the beam slowly, and torsion mimics the 2nd floor beam} The problem beam supports a fraction of a roughly 12,000 pound 7" floating concrete slab, which is why it has a brick plate/bricked. And it really isn't a great install to be honest. https://imgur.com/a/Rwh27l7
  2. the 2nd floor, which is where the beam in question is. The posts for this beam sit on the other two beams drawn, notated by diamond and 4 sided star. I tried to keep them color coded between the two drawings. Diamond being pink compromised beam, yellow being intact neutral smaller beam, and red just dictating the 2nd floor beam as a whole. This beam supports roughly 8000 pound of brick, not accounting for any load distribution, two roofs, I can't find my calculations there, but I'm in a 30psf area so let's assume both roofs together applying load on that beam would max roughly 8000 pounds. https://imgur.com/a/WI3N8z1
  1. 2 scope picture of the connection of lumber and shims to beam, which is what connects what I am calling the lateral support, etc. The pictures are somewhat useless and uneventful, as the material will all be replaced regardless of situation, and you can't see the connection, and it's looks like a drywall sandwhich, but I can't get a better visual yet. I would not be surprised if it was toe nailed, as I am assuming it was fixed at some point due to context clues as a result of a similar movement in past. The 2-2x10 beam is needed for floor joist span support if nothing else.
  2. https://imgur.com/a/Ude5thA
  3. https://imgur.com/a/CryByb9
Woman didn't want a post, but she'll probably get a post. I'm aware I can add plate steel to the bottom/top flange. I can add bracing. I can add a second beam. I can wrap the posts in a fabricated C channel, or replace with a full size beam post. I can increase the bearing capacity by adding extra 2x lamination/dispersing load on sill. Maybe someone is seeing something I can't see or am glazing over. My main concern, and maybe I'm wasting time on it, is assuming that off center connection is a lateral support to help prevent twisting.
I appreciate the responses, insulting or neutral ahead of time. I'll try to revise this and lessen the word wall in a bit/correct some terminology specifics. I understand many will be uncomfortable to answer, I don't need those answers unfortunately. I also understand there is technically not enough to answer in my specific situation to an exact, but that's not what i am asking.

2023.03.24 02:40 ImaginationSea3679 Arxur Nursery Chapter 5

A new POV for you all.
I hope you enjoy.
————————————
Memory Transcription Subject: Minuli, Arxur youth
Date[standardized human time]: December 6
I love Earth.
Probably more than I love any of the other planets hiding in the stars.
I especially loved this place. I have only been here for a single day and I already feel like I have lived a full life.
And now I get to live more life!
I loved this life here. There were so many friends to share my space with! Most arxur don’t like having friends, but I love friends! Friends support you, and make you happy when you’re feeling sad. They even make exploring space easier!
Everything is better with friends.

Especially the plan that I was cooking up.
I looked out the window to see Oros and Ms. Olivia talking, mostly about our needs as arxur.
I already considered Oros to be a Dad. He called me the perfect only child when we were certain that we were about to die. That also meant that he saw me as a daughter. I liked the idea of being someone’s daughter.
Ms. Olivia was nice. Almost as soon as she saw me she gave one of those smiles that humans gave when happy.
Combining all of these facts, there was only one conclusion to make.
Ms. Olivia was the perfect Mom.
But I couldn’t get her to be an official mom alone.
I need friends to team up with.
<<>>
The first friend I approached was Jurra, who had a liking for pretty stuff. She was perfect for setting the atmosphere.
She was, however, prone to getting just slightly off topic.
“What do you think humans wear when they are bonded? Do they have ceremonial garb? Do they have special jewelry that they wear to symbolize their bond? Are they naked to present themselves in full trust?”
All of these questions and more went on for almost an hour when I brought her in.
This curiosity and distraction-prone-ness was probably why she was considered defective.

The second friend that I…
Actually, no. I didn’t go to him.
He came to me.
Jurra and I were eating “lunch” while discussing the plan when Baroz suddenly walked up to us.
Baroz was the oldest of our group, being about 10 years old. He was a very secretive boy. Perhaps so secretive that he was considered defective.
I didn’t fully know his story.
“What are you doing?” He asked simply.
“Getting Oros and Ms. Olivia together.” Both me and Jurra spoke at the same time.
“Count me in.” Baroz immediately replied.
That surprised us. A lot.
“Ummm… why?”
He immediately pulled something out of his belt pouch and tossed it into our laps. It looked like a book of some sort.
“Did you just bribe us?” Jurra asked.
There was a moment of silence before Baroz let out a blunt “Yes.”
“What even is this?” I asked.
For some reason, Baroz developed a full body blush. There was another moment of silence.
“Anatomical diagrams… by technicality… for the most part.”
What was that supposed to mean?

Well, I just got a new friend to help me with my plan. I’ll worry about it later.

The last friend I needed, I wasn’t quite looking forward too.
While I was Oros’ favorite, “Timothy” was Ms. Olivia’s favorite. She used him as a fake laser gun when we played on the ship, and called him handsome when she put a shirt on him.
If she got together with Oros, she would probably bring Timothy along as well.
I won’t be the perfect only child anymore.
But, if he could help me have a family, then I guess I’ll have to put up with him.
I simply marched up to him while he was playing with some blocks and crouched down to his level. He starred up at me.
“I have a plan, and you’re going to help me. Is that alright with you?” I asked.

“I’m going to safely assume that was a yes.”
With that, I walked back to my room to begin planning.
