2023.06.06 17:19 EATSDWEEBZ PC Inoperable, Possible Fried GPU?
| PC Inoperable, Possible Fried GPU? New to reddit and this subreddit, forgive any novice info or amateur formatting. PC Specs: GeForce RTX 2080ti, i7 CPU, MSI Motherboard, 32GB RAM, 750W PSU, 2TB SSD, 2TB HDD, Corsair Crystal Series Case, Corsair CPU Cooling On boot, my monitor will respond by turning on to its default black screen, no display. My GPU will power up normally, before after a few seconds its fans ramp up to max RPMs, the LED on the side going blank. I went to troubleshoot my GPU in another tower after working on my own for hours, where in which it worked. My friend could boot with my GPU fine. So we then throw my GPU back in my tower where my PC boots just fine. I come back to my apartment, and the issue returns. submitted by EATSDWEEBZ to pcmasterrace [link] [comments] |

2023.06.06 13:05 hates_oppression x570 Tomahawk WiFi - PBO buggy
So,I have a 3900X and MSI x570 Tomahawk WiFi.
Ever since I bought it, PBO has always been broken, no matter which UEFI version I used. Whenever I enable PBO, max. power draw is limited to 130W, which is less than the default 143W power draw limit for such a CPU. When I disable PBO, the CPU is able to use upto 143W, and has higher performance (gets higher score in Cinebench).
Does anyone know how to fix this? I was hoping newer UEFI versions would fix it, but they have not. Should I just go back to an older UEFI version? It makes PBO and this AMD CPU useless to me, since it's full multi-threading capability is unusable.

2023.06.06 11:59 reappppp Bios issue
BIOS corrupted, white POST light with no changes to BIOS
hello all,
basically ive been having problems with my pc for about a month now, i got an RTX 3060 and it would sometimes not boot, crash etc and it turned out that I just didn't seat it properly.... for a month...
but yesterday i ended up fixing it, i went to update the BIOS (i didnt know it was a dumb idea), the pc didnt boot after the update and it corrupted the BIOS, I got a friend who's better with computers than I am to help and he told me the GPU wasnt seated properly, and after fixing that I took out the clock battery, reset the BIOS and I thought that would be it.
however, this morning I went to boot my pc and it had the exact same problem, white POST and 0 connection to the monitor at all, so I once again took out the clock battery to reset the BIOS and now it's working again, but I don't understand how or why this happened because I did not make any changes to the BIOS :/
any help appreciated :)

Summary of Complaints:
What I am currently experiencing: the programs utilization usage for the GPU spike from 1%-2% all the way up to 30%-40% just in a matter of seconds. My PC Freezes, I can hardly even move my mouse. -This happens even in the BIOS. The Realtek Lan Port drops connection about every 5 minutes for a duration of 0.25 - 1 seconds. My Audio interface hardly even Works. (It is a Zoom H6 plugged in via USB).
From what HWinfo is telling me, the Voltage changes are INSANE, the power draw is NOT consistent.
I just want to make sure that I am headed into the right direction while testing these parts and updating firmware, drivers, and software correctly. Any insight is much appreciated.
What’s in Good Condition:
- CPU (Cinebench: Consistent Single-Core and Multi-Core Performance under load)
- GPU (3DMark Score - Great)
- SSD - Boot Drive (No Errors: Verified from CHKDSK /R)
- RAM (No Errors: Verified from MemTest86 + Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool)
- Surge Protector + Power Outlet (No Errors)
- Thermals (Under 60 °C for the CPU, GPU and RAM while under load)
Things I did:
- Updated motherboard BIOS to be to support the CPU
- Reinstalled Windows 10 Pro 3 times from a USB. (A FULL reset, removing ALL files).
- Enabled Gameboost for the CPU in the BIOS
- Enabled XMP for the RAM in the BIOS.
- Used DDU to refresh GPU.
- Updated VBIOS from MSI Dragon Center
- Updated CPU Drivers (from AMD)
- Updated GPU Drivers (Game Ready Driver from Nvidia Geforce Experience)
- Enabled Resizable BAR for GPU
Things I DIDN’T do:
- Manually Overclock CPU or GPU

2023.06.06 07:36 kingsaadi Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR5 - Is this normal nowadays for a $650nzd motherboard!?
| Building a z790 system as my Rampage IV Extreme finally had it after serving 11 solid yrs! Decided to go with z790 Tomahawk DDR5 as I heard decent things about Tomahawk ranges and saw pretty good ratings on Amazon. Bought my first one from MSI store in Amazon.com - board looked brand new, no physical defects I could see. Went to boot it up after installation - dead silence - would not power on at all. After much troubleshooting saw a number of other people reporting the same problem. Spent days trying to get it to boot as I really wanted it to work, but unfortunately had to post it back to Amazon for processing refund as it took forever to ship it the first time and I planned to try find local even if was more expensive. Bought my second one (perhaps I didn't learn my lesson the first time), and this one looks like someone at the factory didn't have their lunch so decided to take a bit out of the board - jokes aside - edges look like crumbling bread sticks or maybe rice crackers after breaking them off from their row. Certainly doesn't look like this on the pristine motherboard photos on the MSI website or store webpages same story albeit a bit less on the bottom right corner chipped top edge Motherboard screw solder points are also missing. 1 missing on that couple missing from that partially filled outer ring and what looks like glue on the edge? I've had quite a few motherboard, and still have 3 of them with me currently (over 15yrs old now!) and not one had these basic issues. I have only tried boot test this second board from outside the case just to see if it will power on, and it does with cpu and 1 ram installed in A2 so far - doesn't power on without any ram and cpu which is normal from my experience for newer motherboards (my Rampage also didn't boot without CPU/ram, but older motherboards did). Will the 'breadstick' edges and missing solder points potentially cause issues, now or later down the line? Like grounding or short circuit issues maybe? And (perhaps I'm being paranoid when I say this...but) if simple things like this is off with the board, should I be worried about the actual board not working properly - should I take back to store for replacement? 2023.06.06 04:39 Tyson-R Is this LGA 1700 STOCK ILM Pressure causing boot loops and no start.?
ILM LGA 1700 crash boot loop on 2 different motherboards . (1.MSI Tomahawk z790 & 2. Asus z790)
- PC will not boot if ILM is fully locked.
- PC will boot loop if ILM lever is half hay closed.
- PC will post bios if ILM lever is fully open and cpu is slightly pressed
I was certain that the issue was a DOA motherboard. Asus z690-P wifi But when it happened on another I was suspicious. The 2nd Motherboard MSI tomahawk z790 was completely dead, no power anywhere, but when I removed the CPU and tried to power it up, literally everything came to life. and Q-LED indicated for the 1st time.
- Reinstalled the CPU & cooler .. everything was dead again. Hmm interesting.
- Removed cooler, still dead.
- Held the cpu with finger pressure, BOoTED! (forced shutdown before thermals became issue)
- Sat a copper slug on CPU, BOoTed!
- Determined the ILM is causing the crash, and Boot-Loops
I think I'm outside the return window. and the CPU boots the original system it came from Z690 Was wondering what options I have to make this work.? Is the CPU warped?
The ILM on both z790's feels like it's putting WAY MORE PRESSURE on the CPU.
TL;DR version: Two different motherboards (MSI Tomahawk z790 and Asus z790 experienced boot issues and crashes with the Intel LGA 1700 socket.) Full locking of the Integrated Load Module (ILM prevented the PC from booting.) Half-closed ILM lever caused the PC to enter a boot loop. Opening the ILM lever fully and applying slight pressure to the CPU allowed the PC to post the BIOS. Suspected the first motherboard (Asus z690-P wifi was dead, but the issue occurred on a second motherboard (MSI Tomahawk z790).) Removing the CPU from the second motherboard caused it to power up, suggesting an issue with the CPU-Motherboard interaction. Reinstalling the CPU resulted in a dead system again. Applying finger pressure or using a copper slug on the CPU allowed the system to boot. Concluded that the ILM was causing the crashes and boot loops. Concerned about being outside the return window and wondering about options to make it work. Questioning if the CPU is warped. Noted that the ILM on both z790 motherboards exerts excessive pressure on the CPU. submitted by

2023.06.06 03:09 Haephestu2 Mixed RAM - Can I align the speeds to run faster by overclocking the slower modules?
Hey guys, So I have been running DDR4 Fury Hyper X (2x8gb) 2666mhz modules and recently was given some DDR4 Fury Beast (2x8gb) 3200mhz modules. I have 4 slots on my B450 Pro Gaming AC carbon mobo (not the Max version).
I was wondering, as I have managed to get all 4 in and PC to post and boot but the whole set are now running at 1200mhz actual (2400 speed) instead of the 1333mhz actual (2666) I was getting on the fury X before I installed the beasts.
Would I be able to manage to overclock to Fury X sticks up to a speed closer to the 3000/3200 speeds the beasts are capable of and run all 4 (mayube not at full 3200 beast speed) but closer to that rather than have the system limit everything down to the Fury X speed minus some (I presume to match clock timings).
Is this possible or can you not seperate the overclocking between channels? would that even be the limiting factor?
TIA

2023.06.06 02:59 harry-jg Best Desktop VPN
When one is embarked upon the high seas of the internet, engaged in a bit of torrenting, streaming, or perhaps a spirited round of virtual golf, one needs a steadfast guardian. This valiant defender, my dear reader, is a Virtual Private Network or VPN, if you will, standing tall between your desktop (or the more mobile cousin, the laptop) and all manner of digital riff-raff. An ideal desktop VPN comes armed with a bevy of potent capabilities, like the ability to cunningly split its tunnelling prowess and a steadfast resolve to block all manners of advertisements and digital gremlins known as malware.
This scribble, dear reader, is a handy guide to help you select the VPN most suited to your desktop needs. If the constraints of time have bound you in their relentless grip, then a swift glance should suffice.

A full refund shall be promptly dispatched your way, no questions asked. To commence your exhilarating expedition with NordVPN, step right this way and start your trial.
The Anatomy of an Ideal Desktop VPN: A Gentleman’s Guide
When on the hunt for the perfect desktop VPN, one might fancy a digital Sherlock Holmes, the magnifying glass at the ready to scrutinize potential candidates. Here’s the checklist we've meticulously compiled to nab the crests of the VPN flock:
Firstly, the good VPN shall not jot down a solitary jot about your identity or the particulars of your use of its services. Anything less is simply not cricket.
Secondly, it should be sporting the latest and most reliable encryption standards, the sort of codes even an Enigma machine would tip its hat to.
In the third place, the VPN should provide a desktop app so user-friendly and well-constructed that even a member of the Drones Club could navigate it without batting an eyelid.
Fourthly, it should boast connection speeds as swift and steadfast as Jeeves responding to a summons bell.
Fifthly, one must not overlook the necessity of DNS leak protection. No one likes a sieve in their virtual world, after all.
Next up, a robust server network, sizable enough to flummox even Aunt Dahlia’s formidable pack of hunting hounds.
Support for torrenting should be offered, and I dare say, any VPN that doesn’t support this is as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Lastly, a truly top-tier VPN would offer a ticket to the streaming world — Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the like — without the bother of geo-blocks. Rather like a personal invitation to the Drones Club.
NordVPN
Topping our list like Bertie Wooster topping the best-dressed list in The Drones Club, we present NordVPN, a Panama-based chap, free of those dreadfully invasive data retention laws. With a select offering of sturdy VPN protocols (OpenVPN, NordLynx, and IKEv2) at the helm, it commands an impressive fleet of 5600 servers scattered across 60 countries.
Mimicking the impeccable standards set by Jeeves himself, NordVPN has become something of a trendsetter in the VPN arena. Its ironclad no-logging policy could make the very walls blush with its refusal to pry into your online gallivanting. With the strength of modern encryption, it stood as firm as Lord Emsworth's prized pig against any IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks in our testing.
Capitalizing on the grandeur of the desktop platform, NordVPN has engineered apps that are as handy as a cocktail at a Drones Club gathering. These cunningly crafted applications, both for desktop and mobile, come with a kill switch. This smart feature promptly stops any data leakage should the VPN pull a vanishing act. A sprightly ads and malware blocker also sits tucked under the wings of all NordVPN apps.
A marvel of digital swiftness, NordVPN galloped past its peers in our speed tests, proving ideal for torrenting and consuming high-quality streaming (4K/8K), which it robustly supports.
The versatility of NordVPN extends beyond the usual suspects (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS) and includes Amazon FireTV, NAS devices, and routers, becoming as indispensable as a stiff G&T at the end of a long day.
SurfsharkVPN
Making a splash in our pool of esteemed VPN providers, allow me to introduce Surfshark, a stalwart of the desktop VPN realm. Although this Netherlands-based character hasn't been treading the boards for quite as long as its elder peers, it nonetheless delivers a VPN performance that would draw a standing ovation.
Now, while the Netherlands isn't one to insist on data retention, it does hobnob with the Nine Eyes alliance. However, thanks to Surfshark's rather British stiff-upper-lip approach to privacy, it would be as bereft of user data as Bertie Wooster is of common sense, should any law enforcement chappies come knocking.
Lining up to the starting blocks are Surfshark's sturdy VPN protocols: OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IPsec. Running in tandem with 256-bit AES encryption, a SHA512 authentication hash, and 2048-bit DHE-RSA key exchange supporting perfect forward secrecy (PFS), it would give the Bounder's Club's annual three-legged race a run for its money. In our stringent tests, Surfshark shrugged off IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks like a gentleman brushing off an unsolicited invitation to a poetry reading.
Every one of Surfshark's apps comes armed with a kill switch, as eager to step into the breach as Jeeves into a fix. Opt for a Surfhark One subscription, and you'll acquire antivirus software and a host of other perks, making it the equivalent of a well-stuffed picnic hamper.
Surfshark's performance in the realm of streaming is as exemplary as the service at the Drones Club. It's as dependable in China as it is in Chuffnell Regis, and it offers unlimited simultaneous connections to boot. And its suite of apps? Well, it covers Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Amazon FireTV - making it as accommodating as Aunt Dahlia's chef Anatole.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN, hailing from the somewhat sunnier climes of the British Virgin Islands, which, despite its misleading moniker, is a land unencumbered by Her Majesty's rule.
In the VPN protocol department, ExpressVPN confidently fields a trinity of secure choices: OpenVPN, Lightway, and IKEv2. The middle chap, Lightway, is ExpressVPN's own prodigy, an open-source whiz kid that's always up for an audit. Moreover, these protocols gallantly serve across ExpressVPN's vast regiment of 3000+ servers.
Now, for the desktop and mobile apps, ExpressVPN has cooked up quite a feast. With user interfaces as inviting as Aunt Agatha's forced dinner parties are intimidating, they gracefully cater to both the novice nephew and the tech-savvy uncle. In short, no matter your proficiency in the arcane arts of technology, you'll find yourself as well-equipped as Wooster with Jeeves at his side.
A key factor of ExpressVPN's reputation could be compared to Bertie's famed collection of Spode china – unassailable quality. It employs AES-256 encryption, 4096-bit RSA keys, and SHA256 authentication, all supporting perfect forward secrecy (PFS), no less. ExpressVPN runs its servers from volatile memory (RAM), ensuring that no data could linger on the system's hard drives any more than a drop of Anatole's Bouillabaisse could remain in Bertie's bowl. With a kill switch included in all its apps, you're in safe hands, even if the VPN suddenly loses its footing. As for IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks? ExpressVPN dodged these in our tests as deftly as a newt-nourished Gussie Fink-Nottle avoids Gertrude Winkworth's mother.
ExpressVPN is also no slouch when it comes to speed, proving to be one of the most fleet-footed VPNs in our roster. Its aptitude for streaming is as impeccable as its adherence to punctuality, even managing to charm notoriously finicky services. ExpressVPN offers native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and a few select routers, making it as versatile as Jeeves himself.
Desktop VPN: A Stroll in the Park or, How To Be More Like Jeeves In Your Internet Endeavours
Setting up a VPN on a desktop (or indeed, a laptop, for our portable-inclined friends) is as straightforward as Wooster's Drones Club membership. There is no need to learn any secret handshake or arcane ritual, the procedure is universally applicable.
Here's the step-by-step to getting your VPN running smoother than Barmy Fotheringay-Phipps' latest anecdote:
If you have not yet thrown your hat in the ring with one of our recommended VPN providers, it's high time you do so. As a personal favour, might we suggest you start with the crème de la crème - our favourite, NordVPN.
Next, proceed to download your chosen provider's app onto your device, as seamlessly as Jeeves procures the morning paper.
Now, your provider should have laid out a veritable roadmap for setting up your VPN. Generally, it's as simple as selecting a server and then nonchalantly tapping the "Connect" button as one might tap one's champagne flute for a toast. Should you stumble upon a hiccup or two, your VPN provider stands ready to assist, like Jeeves with a calming restorative.
And there you have it! The VPN app now hums away quietly in the background, as unobtrusive and efficient as our dear Jeeves attending to Wooster's affairs.
The Fine Art of VPN Evaluation, or How To Assess Your Internet Butler
Here is the blueprint we have adhered to in the pursuit of a thoroughly comprehensive review of VPNs. In order to maintain a certain level of decorum and fairness, and to avoid the proverbial fruit salad comparison, we thought it best to lay our evaluation cards on the table.
Speed: In the realm of VPNs, speed is much like the punctuality of a proper valet, immensely crucial. A lethargic connection can turn an otherwise delightful browsing or streaming experience into an agonising slog. Rest assured, we've put our favoured VPNs through their paces in the latest speed tests.
Global servers: The availability of servers worldwide is akin to having an assortment of clubs in your golf bag. It grants the freedom to dodge geographical restrictions and allows you to choose a server in close proximity to ensure top speed.
Protocol variety: A versatile VPN provider should offer multiple secure protocols, much like a versatile butler should be able to mix a variety of cocktails. Depending on the situation, one might prove more advantageous than another. Just as Bertie might prefer a Martini some evenings and a Brandy Alexander on others, you'll want the flexibility of protocols like IKEv2, OpenVPN, and WireGuard.
User-friendly interface: Much like Jeeves, a VPN should be unobtrusive and easy to manage, regardless of one's proficiency with the latest tech. We ensure our selected providers offer apps as straightforward as a stroll in the park.
Streaming services: Securing access to streaming sites via a VPN can be as tricky as getting Wooster out of a fix. Some VPN providers offer this service with varying degrees of success. We test each contender with popular streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and more.
Torrenting: VPN users often enjoy a good torrenting session as much as a member of the Drones Club enjoys a game of billiards. Not all providers permit this activity on their networks. We scrutinise each VPN's policy regarding torrenting and examine how effectively it supports this function.
Security and Privacy: In essence, these are the raison d'être for VPNs. It's as if we were inquiring about the trustworthiness and discretion of a new butler. What is their stance on privacy? How do they handle logs? What encryption protocols are in use? Do they utilise solid ciphers? Do they provide Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS)? Are there any potential leak vulnerabilities? These questions are our guiding light when evaluating a VPN's commitment to privacy and security.

2023.06.06 02:03 Unicron5120 Warlords Servers / High Player Count Official Altis servers hang on loading screen or present blank role selection menu
For many months now I have not been able to play on the Official Warlords servers. I've done a little more investigating today, and I've found that I seemingly can't get into any Official server running Altis. I've gotten into Warlords servers on Malden and Stratis, but it seems that any official server running Altis, or possibly even with a 30+ player cap presents me with issues.
- Upon attempts to connect, the game stalls at the loading screen, or presents me with a blank role selection screen, and if I hit the ok button without selecting a role the server boots me out. - For a short time when this issue initially presented itself I was still able to connect to the Warlord 2.5 servers, but I would lose connection in about a minute. - I've found today that the Warlord 2.5 server gives me a flash of a full role selection screen, but I immediately lost the session - I only have this issue on the Official Warlords Servers, or High Player Count Official servers on Altis. I don't seem to have the issue with connecting to any other servers. Meaning I can connect to a 16 player max session on Stratis or Malden, but not a 52 player max session on Altis - Since this problem has presented itself to me I have built a new Gaming PC, additionally I have done a completely fresh install of Arma III and Windows 10 - Waiting on the loading screen to finish, or the role selection screen to appear yields no results, and the game is not frozen at this point as I can hit esc to return to the server browser with no delay whatsoever. - I can see activity going by in the chatbox such as connects or disconnects while I'm stuck on the loading / role selection screen - Connecting to any of the servers mentioned through the Arma III launcher yields the same results
I'm at a loss here, if anyone can help me out, or possibly show me other paths to investigate it would be much appreciated. My system specs just in case

2023.06.06 00:39 Vellooci Complete Rebuild Advice
Hey all. I work with enterprise hardware so most of what I know is from that and other IT roles and building computers and repairing them. My last rig has finally kicked the bucket after a large surge passing through a surge protected UPS during my remodel last summer. Was able to replace the few things that did die and now its back to being dead. Most likely its from that and the CPU, GPU, PSU, and MOBO are all done. I have done a lot of testing and have pointed it to multiple things wrong though mainly with CPU. Do not want to reuse these and risk damaging any new parts. (this older computer will be further tested for what the full cause is then upgraded into a rackmount server into the main cluster.) I do a lot of testing of applications and vms before moving to the servers in the basement.
Old specs where: AMD 5950X stock OC (I do not want to or will overclock anything because i dont want to personally)
64GB DDR4 RAM
RTX 3070
6TB total of NVME storage for VMs, ISO storage, and windows
NZXT AIO, H510 flow.
New Specs i am thinking:
AMD 7950X 64gb DDR5 RAM (I usually hit about 50-60gb MAX ram used on a really busy day have never needed to upgrade to 128gb)
Motherboard:
MSI MAG X670E TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard - A deal breaker is less than 2 NVME PCIE slots and no optical out port. 128gb or more capacity is a like as well.
CPU Cooler:
NZXT Kraken Elite 360 - Always use AIOS since I can remember building computers and would prefer this especially in a rackmount configuration. (See the case if this makes sense.) (May go with their upgrade from the chase to include it to ensure full compatibility.)
Storage: 2:
Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive - This will be enough with the Lab upgrade almost completed with 28TB total of SSD storage for ISCSI/SMB/whatever needed
GPU:
Asus DUAL OC GeForce RTX 4070 12 GB Video Card - (Sometimes used for some VM testing depending on the use case. Though do game from time to time)
Wired Networking:
Intel X520-DA1 10 Gb/s Ethernet PCIe x8 - (I am running local 10gb LAN and WAN and do utilize a good amount of this to the servers all the time)
PSU:
POWER SUPPLY Corsair HX1200 Platinum 1200 W 80+ Platinum - (Want to ensure efficiency and power capacity available)
Case:
CX4200a - (This is a rackmount 4U chassis because I am tired of tower builds all my life and I want something different. I work with Rackmount servers all at work and at home so it makes sense. I have the U space next to me in the network rack and will fit in the rack I have. This appears that all will fit into it. Still figuring it all out. )
Fans will be included from the case that are noctua upgrades.
Main thoughts. For what I do with testing having the CPU, RAM, Networking this will usually be the most used item used up there at least 75% of the time. I do game time to time and having a GPU to game with whatever I want is nice. Anything you would change about this build? Mainly for me I am going for the core count, ram size for vmware. Intels newer generation CPUS of P and E cores will cause issues for me as some users have reported and would rather not go that route. (I have a gaming laptop with 12th gen i9 and it does great honestly for gaming and what i do on the laptop but as my main desktop I would honestly stay away from it for me)
And lastly to protect this investment for longer than around 2 years I will be upgrading from a regular APC UPS without an equipment warranty included to a rackmount higher capacity one. Power from the wall is not an option as anything can be ran to it to satisfy the cord and requirements for running it properly. The money for the computer and UPS is not an issue for me. Just mainly seeing if these all are looking good.
Thanks for the advice in advance.
