2023.05.24 06:04 madtownmarketer Whiskey review #2: Makers 46 cask strength
| About the bottle: Maker's Mark 46 cask strength - batch 23-01 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky ABV: 55.15 Age: no age statement, but I've read 6-8 years Mash bill: 70% corn, 16% red winter wheat, 14% barley Uses 10 seared virgin French oak staves in additional aging (their 46 profile). Notes: Tasted in a glen cairn, $60 (Wisconsin) Nose: Brown sugar, over ripe peach, leather, a little vapor from the proof Palette: Sharp spice, vanilla, thinner mouth feel than I expected, a little toasted marshmallow, much less sweet than the nose, cinnamon Finish: Medium length, drying, a bit of bitterness Overall: I like it. Cask strength and stave aging makes Maker's way more interesting than the base spirit - enough to revisit and discuss with friends. I'd buy it again, but don't feel a need to have it always open with a backup on the shelf. Rating: 7.3 Scale: 10 - Perfection. Not sure I'd ever give a 10 (what if I tasted something better?), but ones in this neighborhood include Pappy 20, King of Kentucky, Old Forrester Birthday, Redbreast 21, Yamazaki 18. 9 - Outstanding. I'll share it with friends that appreciate really good whiskey. Often a rare find. Examples: the best editions of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and Booker's, Kilchoman Loch Gorm, Bunnahabhain 18. 8 - Superior. Will try to have a bottle open and a backup for when I finish it (if available). Examples: Nikka from the Barrel, Redbreast Cask Strength, any Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and Booker's editions that didn't rate a 9. 7 - Very good. Generally available in stores. A good mid-week pour when watching TV with the family. Worth using in spirit-forward cocktails. Examples: Old Ezra 7, Willett 4 yr rye, Port Charlotte 10. 6 - Solid. Good for mixing. Local bar that really doesn't do whiskey might have it. Examples: Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Maker's Mark, Laphroig 10. 5 - It's fine. Mixer only. Rail whiskey at the dive bar. 2-4 Can you really distinguish between these levels? I won't intentionally review anything below a six. 1 - Drain pour. About me: I really only started exploring brown liquor in the last few years. My palette is still developing, so I won't be offering really nuanced notes. But I'm having fun learning and hope to share some of my enthusiasm. submitted by madtownmarketer to bourbon [link] [comments] |

2023.05.22 01:18 AggressorBLUE Airshows/Birding/Wildlife shooting upgrade: New body, or new Lens?
| TLDR: shooting currently with Oly 75-300 and EM5 II. Do I buy the OM-1 or the 100-400 tele? Long version: The above images were shot with my venerable EM5 MKII, with the Oly 75-300 tele. The shots came out well but needed some moderate cropping to between 70% and 50% size. They seem to have come out well, but there were many others that didn’t. Especially with the F-15, I routinely lost it in the clouds/sky to blurry and hunting auto-focus. So, I’m debating which upgrade will get me more milage for Airshows/birding/wildlife photography: -New body time: pull the trigger on an OM-1. Seems like from reviews it’s essentially a step up and forward across any measurable axis from the EM-5 II. I’ve written off the OM-5 as the plastic body is too much a step backwards from the solid feeling magnesium of the MKII. A shameful retreat on quality for Olympus. And that Oly didn’t port over the OM-1s new OS reeks of a rushed-to-market product. Likewise the older OS on the EM-1 III makes me hesitant to go that route, but I’m not entirely close-minded. I also like that in situations like today, where carrying a bag wasn’t really an option at the airshow, I could cary the OM-1 with the tele on my shoulder sling, and use my belt clip with the EM-5II and the 8MM fish eye and be well kitted for both airborne and static display shots. Higher res buys me some additional digital reach to make up for the shorter FL of the 75-300, versus option 2.. -a New Telephoto, namely the Oly 100-400. I like that it has focus lock to a set range, similar to the 60mm macro. Speaking of locks, I like that apparently Oly saw fit to finally add a freaking barrel lock. And, not for nothing, the 75-300 falls in line with similar non-pro series Zuiko glass in leaving you saying “Wow, this shoots way better than something this plasticky and cheap feeling has any right too!” Question is, with the hunting auto-focus, how much of that is the EM-5 and how much is the 75-300? If it’s the latter, i can see keeping the EM-5 on the front lines a bit longer and going with more glass. This option of course costs roughly half as much as the body, and if I wait for the edge to come off the price of the OM-1 (and history informs it will drop in MSRP before the glass will) it would of course compound the investment in the glass. I lean towards “new body” but figured it can’t hurt to get other opinions before pulling such an expensive trigger. *Of note, I’m an avid underwater photog as well. Obviously the 100-400 won’t get any milage there, but the OM-1 certainly can. Still, my dive trips this year would likely still be EM-5 based even with the OM-1 in hand; a new body and a new housing for it just aren’t in the cards. submitted by AggressorBLUE to OlympusCamera [link] [comments] |

2023.05.16 16:40 Necessary-Ad-3679 5/7-5/12 Port Orleans and 5-Day Parks
Just me, my wife, and 5 year old daughter. We've been dreaming of a Disney trip since we did a day at the parks 9 years ago on our honeymoon. So happy to finally have it in the books! It was truly a memorable experience for my family!
Resort Report: Port Orleans - Riverside - We booked one of the "princess" rooms, because we wanted to make this really memorable for my daughter. I had heard some complaints that these rooms were dated, but I felt the only thing they needed to update was the TV. Kind of small and old, but we didn't travel here for the TV, so not a deal-breaker! My daughter's jaw was on the floor and I'm so glad I recorded her reactions when we entered the room for the first time.
- Just want to note one other room nitpick was that the toilet was one of the loudest I've ever heard. Made it so we couldn't flush at night for fear of waking each other up.
- This is more of a nitpick of everywhere in Disney, but it had me and my wife laughing by the end of the trip. Every single table we sat at was wobbly! What? Why? How? This feels like a really easy thing to address, but it was just comical to us that every table at every restaurant (except Boatwrights) had this problem for us. Someone get Disney some sheets of cardboard to stick under the legs of these tables! lol
- End of nitpicks.
- The resort grounds are just gorgeous. Our building was themed to look like an plantation mansion, and the gardens surrounding the area were so meticulously cared for. We had a "river view", and there was also a pretty fountain that greeted us in the front every morning and night. I never got tired of hearing the horn for the boat that went up and down the river to Disney Springs. Just cozy.
- Can't say enough about the ambiance. Rustic Louisiana is the theme, and they nailed it! At least I think... I've never been to Louisiana. Someone from Louisiana, please tell me if they nailed it. Boathouse theming for the main building/restaurants, with some New Orleans inspired food in both the table service and quick service restaurants. First time I had jambalaya and gumbo and both were delicious. Again, never been to Louisiana so I'm sure someone from there would say the gumbo isn't REAL gumbo, but it's real to me dang it!
- 5 stars for the main pool. The theming carries over for a rustic southern look, and my daughter had a blast every day in the pool! Never had to convince her to take a break midday and cool down with a swim. There's a slide and kind of a "lazy river" theme going on in the deeper end. The pool bar was also really good. Not too heavy on the alcohol, which is good because 1. There were lots of kids and 2. We really just needed something cold for the heat.
- The restaurants are 3 stars only because they lacked consistency. Sometimes the food was excellent, and other times it felt like it was reheated leftovers. One example was I had gumbo two nights in a row. First night was great. Fresh, hot, full of chicken and sausage. Second night it was less spicy, had less meat, and the rice was the remnants scraped from the pot (i.e. dry and hard). I expect a little better for the money, but then I mostly stayed away from the stuff they usually get right like burgers/pizza/chicken strips. Bonus points for playing bedtime stories on a TV at dinner time in the quick-service. It made it peaceful and helped "wind down" my daughter after a day of nonstop excitement. The sit down restaurant, "Boatwrights" had great service and the food was nice and spicy! My wife and I also had 1 drink each from the bar, and it was heavier on the alcohol than what you find at the pool.
- I loved the quiet crickets theme that was played on the busses on the way back to the hotel. Especially at night. So peaceful.
Here are some of the highlights of our park days:
Magic Kingdom (Days 1-2) - My daughter, despite the early flight to FL, insisted that we we stay up to watch the fireworks on our first night. She was up for it, so we stayed up.
- MAGIC MOMENT! We were standing on a packed Mainstreet before the show, and my daughter was asking to be picked up so she could see better. A CM taps my wife on the shoulder and asks how many are in our party. She says 3, and the CM says "Come with me!" The CM leads us through the crowd to a little roped off area just to the side of the castle stage. Easily as close, if not closer, than any non-CMs can get to the castle during fireworks. They also lead another family of 3 to stand with us. We asked what was going on and the CM just replied "Magic Moment" and handed us each a Mickey Ice Cream bar. I took a picture of my daughter while she was in awe watching the show. That image is burned into my brain forever. Truly magical, truly special, and I immediately fired off Cast Compliments to the two ladies that lead us there. My wife, who never saw the fireworks before, asked me if this is something that Disney does for everybody. No honey, no they do not. Unbelievable!
- My wife and daughter really wanted to ride Aladdin's Flying Carpets (big fans of the movie, I guess), but they were down with mechanical issues both days. Oh well, can't have everything.
- We met Tiana and Rapunzel on the first day at the meet and greet. The CM who played Tiana was especially nice! It felt like she talked with my daughter for ages, and gave her such a long hug when she was at her most tired. I really thought she went above and beyond to make my daughter feel comfortable when I'm sure she was very nervous to be meeting royalty. Rapunzel was very nice too, but Tiana was so sweet it almost made me cry.
- Our first ride in the park was BTMRR. I felt like that really set the tone for the week, as my daughter became a roller coaster junkie after this. haha
- We LL'd 7DMT and Peter Pan on our 2nd day and it is well worth it. I realized LL isn't just for cutting in line, it literally helps you save time so you can get to other rides with shorter waits. Genie+ is an absolute must for us going forward. 7DMT was my favorite ride until we rode GoTG at EPCOT.
- Disney really needs to focus on Tomorrowland. Besides Tron, which is getting mixed reviews, the whole area feels kind of run down and outdated. I know, I know, "the Tomorroland Problem". Disney has the money to address this though, and they simply haven't done enough here. My poor boy Starlight Rays was in total disarray! Everything in that restaurant was dirty and greasy looking. The whole "land" needs a refurb!
- I discovered the hype behind Dole Whips. I love them, and now keep my eyes peeled for any vendor selling them! You know how the dad in A Christmas Story was with the turkey? Yeah, that's me now with Dole Whips.
EPCOT (Day 3) - We couldn't stay up late enough to see SE lit up. I love that dang geodesic dome, so that's a definite "must do" on our next trip.
- Guardians of the Galaxy is now my favorite Disney ride. We got "September", which is one of my favorite songs of all time. As soon as those horns from the song hit and we started flying backwards I screamed with so much joy! Space Mountain walked so Guardians could run. My daughter said she never saw me smiling so much as I did throughout the queue and on the ride. Thank you, Disney. You proved you've still got "it" when you put the resources behind a new ride.
- Frozen may have creepy facial projections, but to my 5 year old, it may have been one of her top rides at all the parks. I rode Maelstrom years ago, and I understand the need that Disney had to make the change and incorporate Frozen in some way. It's a pretty good trade in my opinion.
- My daughter was just a couple inches short for riding the "orange" mission on Mission: Space, so the sent us to the "Weenie Hut Jr." version. Probably a good call. I think my daughter would have been freaked out by the sudden G forces.
- Remy's ride is just OK. Something about trackless rides just don't "do it" for me. They feel like they have a lot of potential to do cool things, but I really don't like when they just park in front of a big screen and pretend like we're still moving. I'm not fooled, Disney!
- I love this park. It's got the futurism that Walt loved, but also the world showcase, but also some thrill rides, but also stuff like Spaceship Earth and Living With The Land. I don't care that IP is being shoehorned in. It's adds some spice for the people like my wife who just want to see some Disney characters.
- My wife has never been able to do the complete walk around the world showcase. I would love a trolley or something that circles the area. The boat that takes you from Canada to Morocco is nice, but it should go around the whole lake in my opinion.
- Really looking forward to the Moana attraction. It looks like it will at least provide a bit of shade which the middle of Epcot desperately needs.
- Plus 1 point for having the dole whip vendor right in the middle of the park (just before Canada), where I needed them most.
Hollywood Studios (Day 4) - Holy heck this was the hottest day by far. Where is the shade? Good thing there were lots of stores to duck into.
- I'll just say it...Rise of the Resistance is not worth the crazy wait times. I bought Genie+ on this day, but couldn't justify paying extra for the ILLs. I like what they are trying to do with the "immersion", but it is not worth a 60+ minute wait. My daughter actually said during that part in the first "ship" that it didn't feel like we were flying. Yeah, I definitely agree. Kudos to the cast members though. They make the experience memorable by being so in character at least.
- Smugglers Run was good, but I think the end got cut off? Hondo was talking to us, and then he was just like "Well, I'm being told we gotta go. KTHXBYE!" What?? Let the man finish telling us how horrible we were at least!
- Runaway Railway is great for the kids. Adults probably might not enjoy it as much. Also, another dang trackless ride! Oh, are we going over a waterfall, or did you just park us in front of a screen and shake the cart a little? I guess it's better than when I was a kid and got scared going past the "Alien" scene on the Great Movie Ride. lol
- My daughter thought Slinky Dog Dash was the ride of the week. I don't agree, but it's a definitely a ride to break up the shuffle from projection screen to projection screen on the other rides in this park.
- To this last point, my daughter actually said "Disney has the best TVs screens!" when we got off of Star Tours. Disney, please, you are fooling no one with these rides. lol
- I really thought adding a Star Wars land would make this my favorite park, but I gotta say, this park is still ranked last out of the 4 available. The theming in these areas (Toy Story and Start Wars) is really good, but they feel even more shoehorned in than the IP rides at EPCOT.
- Still had a really great time, because hey, it's Disney. Just wanted to note that it's nowhere close to the highlights of MK and EPCOT for me.
- Minus 1 point for not having Dole Whips. For shame!
Animal Kingdom & Disney Springs (Day 5) - I thought the safari was just awesome. A white rhino and an ostrich walked right up to our car. So cool. Side note: Does anyone know what those wire things that the cars constantly run over are? Do they alert the animals, Disney employees, or do they just knock the dirt off the tires? I'm really curious about this.
- I thought Khali river rapids was really cool (literally), but a little short. You get sent up so high for only one drop? Felt like they got halfway done designing this ride, went to lunch, and just forgot to finish it.
- This was our first visit to this park, and I'll definitely make more time for it on our next trip. Very well themed (shoehorned Pandora aside), and actual shade!
- We capped off our trip by going to Disney Springs. Now, I had seen videos and was not really impressed. We have upscale outlet malls at home. We just went there to switch up our dinner on the last night. Wow...yeah this is way nicer than just an outlet mall. Live entertainment, huge stores, beautiful views, and fireworks? My daughter had a blast. What a way to cap off the week!
- Plus 2 points for both AK and DS having stores that sell Dole Whips.
Overall, this was the best trip we've had in a long time. Some of the food was hit or miss, but I overall loved living in the "bubble". I can now see why it is as expensive as it is. Absolutely perfect for our daughter too. No meltdowns, and she rode everything that she wasn't too short for. As others have said, I cannot recommend enough going back to the hotel for lunch and a dip in the pool. The parks are crazy busy and hot midday. I think this strategy kept us energized, which in turn led to better moods all around. You paid for the resort, so make sure you actually USE the resort.
This place blew my daughter's little mind, just like it did for me when I was her age. Riverside was so nice to come "home" to every day. I had agonized for months as to whether we were making the "right" choice for the resort with so many to choose from. Now, I would have a hard time choosing someplace else!

2023.05.13 05:59 fabri-techscreens Why Pool Screen Enclosure is Important?
| https://preview.redd.it/fr5vcdxfviza1.jpg?width=1260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=298901d68dbf73e31d011fe88b17c68e937670aa Planning for a swim after a tiresome day can be ideal especially for the warmer months. However, encountering insects, toads, or even debris in your pool could be a major turn-off. That’s where pool screen enclosures from Fabri-Tech Screens come into play. Pool screen enclosures shield your skin from the damaging radiation of the UV rays. With this, you can expect a better swimming experience. All you need is to determine what type of pool screen enclosure matches your preferences. Read on to learn more about the importance of pool screen enclosures: Important Benefits of Pool Screen Enclosures When you hear about pool screen enclosure installation, the first thing that comes to mind is the costly expenditure. It can be a fact, however, it’s a worthwhile investment when you entrust your project with the right company offering durable and budget-friendly pool screens enclosures. 1. Creates a protective shade against the UV rays With a pool screen enclosure on your property, you do not have to worry about harmful radiation. On top of that, you can also save time spent on re-applying your sunblock to prevent sunburn. When your pool has less exposure to the sun, the chlorine lasts longer, too. 2. Keeps the bothersome insects away Discovering insects or frogs floating in the pool can be a mood spoiler for any homeowner or guest. Most pool owners find it a lot bland to keep the area spotless from insects and pests all the time. Whether they’re mosquitos, bugs, lizards, mice, or frogs and spiders, they can become a nuisance before a swim. 3. Allows you to have privacy from neighbors If you’re located in a residential neighborhood where homes are adjoining each other, then preserving your privacy can be hard to achieve. Screen enclosures do not only prevent the noise to be heard outside, but they are most definitely unrestricted in maintaining your privacy via digital prints that can be bonded on the screens. 4. Can resist breeze as well as moisture Strong winds can wreck the atmosphere of a swim while carrying in debris and dust throughout your outdoor time. You can solve this by installing a durable yet classy pool screen enclosure 5. Pool enclosures help you avoid debris piling up Rubbish such as dry leaves or dirt sometimes turns the pool look dirty. You can do all the sweeping or vacuuming around the area, but it is an endless task that demands periodic attention and could be an annoyance over time. Protect your pool area with a screen enclosure that incorporates walls and a roof, so dropping debris is prevented. Hurricane Screen Hurricane shutters are a popular option for home and business owners all across Florida, for their extra protection and stylish appearance. While these storm solutions can be excellent choices, heavy-duty aluminum shutters and panels can obscure your outside views, and aren’t always ideal for larger openings like lanais, pools, or other open areas. https://preview.redd.it/hapryllxfiza1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=0fc78fc0228f11b86339da2dbe1b52080a666924 3. 2023.05.12 05:47 gh-95 Charlotte Has The Highest Rate of Single Family Rentals Listings Owned By Large Corporations
| Hey all - I ran through a list of >500,000 single family homes listed for rent on the major home listing portals and matched it back to ownership data. I found that for any large MSA, Charlotte had the highest percentage of rental homes listed by large corporations. In Charlotte, approximately 54% of single family homes listed on the rental marketplaces were owned by a corporation that owned > 100 properties. While large corporations have mostly stopped purchasing (down 90% YoY in volume), they still own a fair amount of homes (some neighborhoods are >10% ownership rate). Happy to answer any questions/ elaborate on the data however interesting. https://preview.redd.it/47vc2foh1fza1.png?width=902&format=png&auto=webp&s=f853eb8d04339311ce83d15be0d9980da5f22ac6 submitted by gh-95 to Charlotte [link] [comments] |
2023.05.11 20:23 boutell New US CCS chargers report for April 2023
Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in April 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
- Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
- Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were
171 CCS charge points added or refreshed in April 2023, which is up from 159 in March. For comparison, there were only 100 new CCS charge points in April 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars in certain locations. I assume they will start to include this in their reporting to the Alternative Fuels Data Center soon. When they do it should be reflected here.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can
sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

Hello Ladies,
I am about to medically retire from the military. I've always been a big fan of planner notebooks. I love using stickers from creators on Etsy. I would really love to design my own planner stickers specifically for military members and families. I'm interested in selling them at a local craft show near base. I have spent 13 years in the Navy, so I've got an idea of some of the important events to remembeplan for. But I would really love some recommendations from you! Especially from branches outside the Navy, since I know they each use different terms for these events/tasks. Below is a list of sticker ideas that I've already thought of. Thank you in advance!!!!!!
