2023.03.30 19:49 SpookyCatLime But the wedding dress was mine to keep, not part of the "collection"

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/relationships/4774446-family-dishonesty-db-and-sil
Family dishonesty (DB and SIL) 7 replies Eleano · Today 13:55
Dear Mumsnet,
Me and my DH had the most amazing wedding. Everything went smoothly except for one thing.
My wedding dress had been promised to me as a gift to keep by my brother's DP and her DM who own a bridal boutique.
This gift which was announced at the time of our engagement over a year and a half ago, was above and beyond my expectations and I was very grateful for it. It was the reason that I was willing to travel to another country where the boutique is based for the fittings and collection. In fact, I travelled for the final fitting and collection just one week before my wedding which was quite stressful.
But all of that didn't matter because I was still really grateful that it was a gift and was willing to put in the extra effort.
On the day of the collection however, when the dress had just been packed into my suitcase, they mentioned in passing that my brother's GF would be taking the dress back with her after the wedding, as though that had been the agreement all along. I didn't react immediately because I was too shocked and because I wanted to doublecheck correspondence and see that they had indeed gifted it to me.
Sure enough when I checked my phone later I found the message where my brother’s GF had announced that her and her DM had decided to gift me a wedding dress to keep because they consider me to be family. I have a screenshot of that. At this point I still didn’t say anything to not create drama just before the wedding.
It’s also worth mentioning that the DM of my brother’s GF (owner of the boutique and designer of the dresses) had imposed specific demands on me regarding photography and social media promotion for the boutique and still wants me to keep that side of the deal.
Additionally, just before I left for the airport to return home the next day, my brother’s GF asked me if I would agree to post the dress back instead so that her luggage wouldn’t be increased and pay for the postage because her family wouldn’t be willing to. That is when I discretely said that I hadn’t budgeted for that cost because the dress had originally been gifted and she replied that she didn’t remember what had been agreed and in any case the dress was part of the new collection so couldn’t be gifted. Funnily enough, I remember clearly a few months before when I asked which collection the dress belonged to that they told me it was part of an old collection they couldn’t even remember. But that is irrelevant since even if it was true they should’ve told me at the time when I selected the dress over a year ago.
As soon as I parted from them I was able to cry the tears I had been holding back which were tears of sadness and anger since I realised that nobody - not even my brother or his GF had my back to tell me the dress had been ungifted and just be open and transparent with me instead of pretending they don’t remember or that it was part of the wrong collection.
The money I paid for the flights had exceeded the cost of hiring a wedding dress in my own country which would have been much easier for me to do. And the stress of travelling just one week before my wedding when I should’ve been at home doing so many other jobs can’t be measured.
It is now nearly one week after the wedding and I haven’t mentioned anything about it yet as I wanted the bubble of the wedding to pass and not taint it with this drama. However, my brother’s GF’s sister who works at the boutique is already questioning why I’m not tagging the brand on a few Instagram posts I reposted from my suppliers and has also today reminded me that they want me to improve their website.
Because of this pushiness and the fact that my brother himself reached out on her behalf to question why I wasn’t doing a better job of promoting the brand on my social media, I feel it is time to address the elephant in the room.
I am almost certain that they aren’t expecting me to say anything because they think I won’t want to rock the boat which is also why they did it in the first place.
My brother has been dishonest in the past too, having taken money from an account which was set up for a family project and using it for his own needs (he apologised after I pushed him to) and I’m pretty sure he’s been dishonest about many other things as well.
His values which are very different to mine make him think that it’s not a bad thing to lie and he seems to think that he gets away with it and nobody notices his dishonesty.
His GF is the same and together they feel they are a power couple - they are very domineering and competitive in group situations.
Me and my DH are down to earth people that don’t like conflict so we have never clashed with them but this seems like a step too far and I’m determined to at least get an honest explanation if I’m to continue having anything to do with them.
I have messaged my brother and asked him to call me to speak privately but he has said that he would rather I just text him because he’s busy. I know that he won’t call me even though I said that a text message wasn’t appropriate for this conversation.
Therefore, my plan is to text him about it and include the screenshot which proves that it had been gifted to me and end by saying that I expect an explanation at the very least especially if the boutique is expecting me to be sharing photographs from the wedding with them.
It is very disappointing because I did think that my relationship with my brother and his GF was improving since they were very excited about the wedding.

P.S: I don't have the dress as she took it with her when she flew back.

P.P.S: DB and his GF are keen to keep in touch and spend Easter together since they've been left feeling emotional about our newly extended family after the wedding, a sentiment I want to share with them but this situation is holding me back. Trying to figure out how to broach the subject now that they're being so nice. GF has been messaging me about every day trivial things too like we're best friends.

I don't think they are keen to keep in touch. They're just keen to say they are.
Easter is way too soon after your wedding, I think they're testing your boundaries. It's time to start saying no.
@tribpot that is SO interesting because I had a suspicion they were trying to bring us back down to earth in people's eyes after the wedding by spending Easter with them (because they are used to being the centre of attention and we were the centre due to the wedding) which sounds weird but it's similar to what you're saying. So much so that my brother said he would pay money towards our flights which is VERY unlike him. Why are some people like this? Hell bent on being on top? Confused

So now you're also planning on accepting money towards flights from a couple you're not particularly fond of? Seriously, is this a joke? Where will you be staying? Let me guess. In their home abroad, free of charge? Tell them you're busy enjoying time alone as a newly married couple. And perhaps it might be a good idea to actually spend some time enjoying being a newly married couple rather than obsessing about your DB' and his girlfriend.
Who said I would accept? And no you guessed wrong.

@YaWeeFurryBastard I was not attached to the dress but for all the reasons stated above (eg flying to another country) it would have been good if they kept their word. Also I have a screenshot of the message where they said "yours to keep".

  1. New Orleans
The southeast Louisiana city of New Orleans is described as beautiful, vibrant, relaxed and fun.
With its French and Spanish heritage, as well as its accentuated Afro-American features, it expresses American multiculturalism in its architecture, music, and cuisine.
Since President Thomas Jefferson bought New Orleans from Napoleon Bonaparte for $15 million, it has been a wonderful rarity in America.
The French Quarter is the most eclectic city in the country, with its cultural hallmarks added throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
  1. Memphis
The Memphis of Elvis Presley holds true material and spiritual jewels behind its industrial facade.
Among the most influential music venues in the United States is Memphis. This is where Johnny Cash, the king of the country, B.B. King, the king of blues, and Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll performed.
In spite of Graceland, Elvis's mansion, and Beale Street club, where B.B. 's guitar was played, Memphis isn't just about music.
It was built in the same place where Martin Luther King Jr., leader of the civil rights movement for African Americans, was assassinated. Civil rights have been a long-standing struggle for black Americans.
Also worth visiting are the Museum of Childhood, the Pink Palace Museum, Isla Mud, and the Memphis Pyramid.
  1. Asheville
Asheville, located in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, is known for its vast green spaces and craft beer.
There are numerous parks and picturesque mountain paths to breathe fresh air and contemplate beautiful landscapes for those who enjoy hiking, excursions, and simply walking.
The Biltmore estate, the country's largest private mansion, is very close to Asheville. Magnate George Vanderbilt commissioned the construction of this 250-room palace and 50,000-hectare estate.
It's possible you'll stay in the same room that America's greatest inventors, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, John Rockefeller, and the escapist Harry Houdini, Enrico Caruso, once stayed at the Grove Park Inn. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the former president.
There is no shortage of azaleas at Cape Fear Botanic Gardens, and their spectacular spring blooms fill the air with color.
Basilica of San Lorenzo boasts North America's largest free-standing elliptical dome, a turn-of-the-20th-century temple.
  1. Redwood National Park
There are 540 km2 of physical space in the far north of California, off the Pacific coast. Redwood trees can reach heights of more than 115 meters and can live for up to 3 thousand years in the forest.
You will gain a better understanding of what humans represent in the ecosystem if you picnic or camp near these giants of nature.
Redwood's roads take you deep into the woods or close to the coast's beautiful beaches.
This park, which was used in the film Return of the Jedi from the Star Wars saga, is home to brown pelicans, white-headed sea eagles, northern spotted owls, and Steller sea lions.
  1. Denver
In the Rocky Mountains at 1,600 meters above sea level, Denver is a large Colorado city. A combination of natural spaces and man-made comforts.
Tourists and businessmen visit the city to enjoy its charms and take advantage of its economic strength.
For outdoor recreation, Rocky Mountain National Park, Cheesman Park, the Botanical Gardens, and the Zoological Gardens are excellent choices.
In spite of not competing in height with nearby skyscrapers, the cathedral-basilica dedicated to the Immaculate Conception stands out for its sober beauty.
  1. Glacier National Park
With more than 4,100 km2, this park borders Canada and has 130 lakes, in addition to its two mountain systems, Lewis and Livingston.
There are an infinite number of species of flora and fauna in the high snow-capped mountains, including the mountain goat, the park's official symbol.
After shaping its mountains and leaving amazing beauty spots, the glaciers that have disappeared in the last 15,000 years gave this place its name.
Grizzly bears, mules, mouflons, and Canadian lynx are among the species protected in Glacier National Park, one of the best-preserved ecosystems in the country.
The activities to be carried out include fishing, alpine skiing, camping, and hiking.
7. Chicago
Chicago, the "windy city", probably has the best weather in the country.
Restaurants and menus from all over the world make up its gastronomic offer. Likewise, Chicago is the axis of the manifestation of human genius in art and culture.
The Field Museum of Natural History houses more than 20 million natural and cultural objects, making it one of the world's largest museums. The museum's collection of fossils includes Sue, the most complete tyrannosaurus ever found by science.
Chicago has a rich and influential musical life, similar to Memphis. Chicago Blues, Gospel, jazz, Chicago Soul, hip-hop, and the city's top orchestra can be heard there.
8. Natchez
Rich cotton plantation owners looking for a more pleasant summer vacation destination built Natchez's stately porticoed mansions in the 19th century.
In the midst of its large and beautiful gardens, Longwood, which was left unfinished by the civil war, remains very well preserved.
One of the architectural jewels of the southern United States, the cathedral-basilica of Santa Maria impresses with its interior view.
You should visit Natchez just to see the sunsets over the Mississippi River.
9. New York
The "navel of the world", the "capital of the world", the "city that never sleeps", and the "big apple", are some of the adjectives that describe New York.
With millions of residents in a metropolis where more than 170 languages are spoken, it is as rich in culture as it is in population.
There is no comparison to its culinary, museum, artistic, theatrical, musical, audiovisual, festive, sports, and shopping offerings.
The Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Empire State, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park are must-sees. A majestic man-made waterfall on the East River was recently added to this list.
10. Savannah
Despite being challenged for his brutal scorched earth policy during the Civil War, General William Sherman refused to destroy Savannah.
With its boats plying the river that gives it its name, its boulevards with trees that join their crowns making natural vaults, its traditional homes, and its parks and squares, Savannah embodies the old southern spirit like few cities.
Fans of paranormal phenomena will feel at home in this Georgian city, where "ghosts" are everywhere. At least 50 buildings in this "bewitched city" are said to have extrasensory manifestations, which is why it is called a "bewitched city."
Savannah's Gothic-style synagogue is a curiosity.
11. Grand Canyon
There are no words to describe how impressive the Grand Canyon is. The extent of its length exceeds 440 km and its chilling abysses exceed 1,600 meters.
Getting down to the Colorado River's bed is the best way to appreciate this work of nature. Water carved the gorge in a thousand-year-old erosive process.
Among the recreational activities offered by tour operators are hiking, mule rides, hiking, and rafting.
The Skywalk, a walkway with a glass floor more than 1,200 meters high, is an experience that cannot be missed. It's crazy!
12. Nashville
The Parthenon, a replica of the famous Greek building built at the end of the 19th century, is one of the reasons Nashville is called the "Athens of the South" for its educational system and architecture.
There is a 13-meter-high gold-plated statue of Athena in this Parthenon.

A visit to the oldest Chinatown in the United States is a must if you want to taste ancient and fascinating oriental cuisine.
260 meters high, the Transamerica Pyramid is the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco.
Throughout the year, the city by the bay hosts museums, musical and cultural festivals, sporting events, and shows of all kinds.
14. Lake Tahoe
Despite global warming and droughts, Lake Tahoe, located in the Sierra Nevada at almost 1,900 meters above sea level, has managed to preserve its reputation as one of the purest and clear bodies of water in the United States.
There are quaint towns and cities such as Reno and Carson City along the lake's perimeter.
In winter, Lake Tahoe and its surroundings are popular ski resorts, while in summer, hiking and boating are popular.
Bonanza often featured the blue waters of the lake, which has also been the setting for movies such as X-Men (2 and 3) and The Godfather.
15. Miami
There's nothing like a beach party in Miami. Several industries (commerce, communications, entertainment, finance) make the city one of the world's wealthiest metropolises, wealth that translates into well-being and a lifestyle few cities can match.
The green areas are well-maintained, as are the streets and beaches, which are completely clean when tourists arrive. The city's fabulous, glamorous, and exclusive shops, shopping centers, and restaurants offer a wide variety of cuisines.
More cruise ships arrive in Miami than anywhere else in the world, bringing tourists from around the globe who know there will be entertainment and pleasure in the "Magic City."
Here are 20 things you must do in Miami with our guide
16. San Diego
For many Americans, it is the best city in the United States because of its sunny and warm climate year-round.
Nearly 4,000 specimens of more than 650 species can be found at the world-famous city zoo in Balboa Park, a vast natural and cultural space.
In order to fully explore it, visitors must be in good physical condition.
There are 20 blocks of Victorian houses, galleries, shops, and restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter, a historic district developed at the end of the 19th century.
One contribution of the US Navy Pacific Fleet to tourism is its USS Midway Museum, which is housed on the aircraft carrier that decommissioned in 1992.
Seaport Village on the Point Loma waterfront, the Museum of Art, Horton Plaza and the San Diego Mission are also equally attractive attractions.
17. Wine Country (California)
Wine Country, the region where Californian wines are made, including the Napa and Sonoma valleys, is the best place to taste them.
Hundreds of hectares of vines cover the plains with green. Wineries, quaint boutique hotels, and restaurants dot the region, where the best regional cuisine is accompanied by exquisite wines, many of which are grown in adjacent orchards.
From the grape to the bottle, wineries offer tours that blend traditional and modern winemaking techniques.
18. Washington D.C.
It is the capital. The city has less than 700,000 people but is second only to New York in terms of ethnic and gastronomic diversity.
As a political city, it has top-notch services for residents and tourists.
All tourists visit the Washington Monument, the Civil War Memorial, and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in addition to the White House and the National Capitol, two architectural symbols of the capital.
The Smithsonian Institute has beautiful museums, one of which is the Natural History Museum with over 125 million specimens.
The Georgetown University campus is serenely beautiful, preceded by Healy Hall, a majestic building blending Romanesque and Baroque styles harmoniously.
19. Cape Cod
A long Massachusetts peninsula with excellent hotels and delicious seafood is ideal for spending days at the beach with the family.
The peninsula is dotted with windmills and picturesque towns such as Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, Dennis, Brewster, Chatham, Eastham, Truro, and Provincetown.
In summer, vacationers from New England and other parts of the country flock to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
20. Boston
This is the city where the Red Sox play baseball. The Tea Party of 1773, a precursor event to American independence, occurred in the beautiful capital of Massachusetts.
A museum dedicated to this event tells the story of the event through actors dressed in the style of the time.
A number of stately buildings and museums can be found in Boston's Historic District, including the Otis House and the Gibson House.
While the Science Museum is the main attraction for visitors, other artistic and museum spaces such as the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of Natural History are equally popular.
The North End is a small universe of peoples and cultures that make the city a living paradise for those who enjoy Italian cuisine and culture.
21.Las Vegas
This is a story about Sin City.
A multitude of sumptuous hotels and casinos line the Strip and Fremont Street in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas is impossible without visiting the Flamingo, Caesars Palace, Mirage, Venetian, Excalibur, or MGM Grand. This has always been the scene of memorable boxing matches.
Mafia Museum recalls the city's origins as an Italian-American criminal organization initiative. Among the gangsters, you will meet the most infamous and ingenious scammers in the world.
Las Vegas' first hotel-casino, The Flamingo, was the brainchild of gangster Bugsy Siegel, a partner and subordinate of Lucky Luciano, who saw the advantages of having an isolated place for betting, roulette, and shows.
Take a day trip from the city of sin to the Grand Canyon, a few kilometers away.
Vegan desserts offer entertainment options for motorsport fans. Excursions on 2, 3, and 4-wheel machines are organized by the hotels themselves.
22. Portland
A charming city, Portland is crossed by the Willamette River and is guarded by Santa Elena, Hood, and Tabor, its most emblematic mountains.
While the green and welcoming city parks invite you to relax, the nearby mountains invite you to hike and breathe fresh air.
As well as being a musical city, Portland has beautiful parks and a high standard of living that have made it a popular setting for movies and television shows.
The Art Museum houses work by Van Gogh and Monet. The Museum of Science and Industry preserves the submarine used in the film, The Hunt for Red October.
With its multitude of food trucks and street stalls, Portland is one of the American cities with the best craft beers.
In the Cascades, Mount Hood is the fourth highest peak at 3,426 meters above sea level.
23.Seattle
This is the land of Nirvana, grunge, and guitarist Jimmy Hendrix. Musical influences abound in this city as well.
In addition to the Mariners, Seattle is also home to Amazon and Starbucks. In the United States, the city competes with Silicon Valley for technological supremacy.
The Museum of Pop Culture, the Asian Art Museum, and the Chihuly Glass Garden are all worth a visit.
The cemetery in which Bruce Lee and his son Brandon are buried also attracts hundreds of tourists, whether they are martial arts fans or not.
Enjoy the playful sea lions of Lake Washington.
24. Deadwood
Deadwood, located in South Dakota in the central-northern part of the country, has retained the spirit of the old western town it once was despite its location in the middle of the country.
Deadwood's large population of criminals and adventurers produced at least one death every day by the end of the 19th century. It had more saloons than residences, nine out of ten women were prostitutes, and nine out of ten men were prostitution dealers.
There are dueling gunmen, allusive museums, modern gambling dens, and rodeo shows in this picturesque town that harmlessly recreate its legendary and violent past.
The grave of the notorious adventurer and gunslinger, Wild Bill, shot to death at a card table in 1876, is a landmark associated with the city's past. He died with 2 aces and 2 eights, the now infamous and inauspicious "dead man's hand."
25. Kansas City
Kansas steak is America's most famous cut of meat and is prepared like no other by city dwellers at barbecue joints.
Live jazz is offered throughout the week in the city that straddles the Missouri and Kansas rivers.
Visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum's sculpture garden for a picnic and free admission.
Weapons, objects found in European trenches, vehicles, uniforms, and other items used during the bloody and brutal Great War are on display at the National Museum of the First World War.
You will also love Kansas City's "First Friday", a monthly cultural event in the Crossroads district combining art and gastronomy.
The Museum of the Negro Leagues is a must-see for baseball fans.
26. Key West
In the past, this island in the Florida Straits was a haven for pirates.
Key West is a place where you can forget about the noise. A tourist bus ride of about an hour and a half will take you past the main attractions, including the house where Ernest Hemingway lived and is now a museum.
Duval Street offers excellent restaurants and nightlife options if you forget your swimsuit or other clothing or accessory.
There is a rich and beautiful biodiversity in the mangrove forests of Key West. A paddle board or kayak tour will leave you feeling energized for the rest of the day.
In Dry Tortugas National Park, 110 km from Key West, you can dive in reefs with clear waters.
A sunset viewing in Mallory Square with music and street performers is another must-do activity in Key West.
27. Mount Rushmore
Between 1927 and 1941, Keystone Mountain in South Dakota was carved into granite.
Danish-American artist Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln sculpted the 60-foot-tall faces of celebrated presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln.
400 carvers participated, guided by plaster models preserved in this National Monument, built to honor the most representative characters of American history's first century and a half.
One of the most symbolic places in the country is Mount Rushmore. Each year, it receives more than 3 million visitors.
28. Yellowstone National Park
World's oldest national park. It is the enormous caldera of the largest volcano on the American continent, a monster that could wipe out all life on earth if it erupted.
Even though there have been no eruptions for 640,000 years, it still attracts hundreds of visitors with its spectacular geysers.
Among the more than 500 geysers formed in the park, Old Faithful is the most famous, erupting at 93°C and 40 meters high almost every hour.
Lamar Valley, with its mountains as sentinels, is a great place to camp for hikers and wildlife watchers.
There are trout in Yellowstone Lake and beautiful waterfalls in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

2023.03.30 19:46 in-my-jammies AITA for ignoring my MIL’s passive-aggressive Easter card?

My husband and I have 3 kids, ages 11-15. My MIL has never been an involved grandma. She’s met all 3 kids, but we don’t live in the same state and she doesn’t do phone calls, video chats, texts, cards, gifts, or anything with them. She used to talk to my husband sporadically and would just ask him to “pass on her love.” That’s all fine, our kids understand that an interested grandma would be really cool, but we just don’t have that with MIL and that’s not their fault.
In 2021 MIL had a huge falling out with my husband. She asked him to bring the kids to visit her during a big COVID wave. Our youngest was too young for a vaccine so our family all vaxxed and masked to keep her safe. MIL and her husband were anti-vax, anti-mask, vacationing in an RV park, posting to FB about boat parties, bars, karaoke, bingo, etc. My husband kept it simple - it would be too risky for our little girl to visit right now. MIL said it wouldn’t be risky because she always stayed home and didn’t go out around other people. My husband didn’t call her on the lie, but just stuck to it would be too risky. MIL ended up yelling at him about being selfish, unloving, and mis-informed and ended with “I can’t even talk to you anymore, I’ll call you when I want to talk” and hung up.
My husband and I talked about it after and thought that she should call and apologize if she wants to restore some sort of relationship. She hasn’t called since. Our cell phone number is posted on our business website homepage. Every few months MIL comments on our business social media: “I tried calling but I don’t have your new number so guess you’ll have to call me!” then “God gave us family and you’re missing it!” then “Gee I sure would love to be able to call and wish my grandson a happy birthday!” When my husband’s dad (MIL’s ex-husband) passed away a few months ago, MIL texted a copy of a FB post from my husband’s sister to my husband’s aunt and asked her to text it to my husband to “let him know.” (Another member of the family had already contacted my husband directly.)
Then a few days ago there was a card in the mailbox addressed to our youngest. When she opened it, it was an Easter card with a $35 check enclosed that said, “Dear , This is our mailing address and phone number. We hope you’ll want to call or write us sometime, Love you so much, ” (We asked our daughter if she wanted to write back and she said “No, just put it in the trash, please, I don’t even care about the money.” So we did, though we did give her the $35 to replace the trashed check.)
So it definitely seems like MIL thinks any problem is on our side, and we’ve had some people say “You should just talk to her, that’s family, etc.” So AITA for ignoring these attempts unless she actually calls?

The most beautiful of Kashmir's present-day gardens for the gorgeous view that takes over Dal Lake and surrounds it. A pleasant one-hour walk from the botanical garden that lies just off Boulevard Road. Pari Mahal was created by the philosopher Prince Dara Shikooh, the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jehan (who also commissioned Akhund Mullah). Dara Shikooh was obsessed with the idea of the similarities between Hinduism and Islam, "the meeting place of two oceans", he called it. He believed in the unity of being and of religion stating that Hinduism and Islam were twins, "hairs on the same head" and that there was no essential disagreement on the nature of their understanding of God. This tolerant attitude was to cost Dara his crown. This garden was not for temporal pleasure alone but as a place for learning, he built it for his tutor Akhund Mullah Shah so he could hold discussions with religious divines of all faiths. On the grounds, there was a school for Sufism and one for Astrology.

2 Shalimar Garden “The Garden of Love)”

Hotel Taxi Adventure by Ahanger HOBO
In the old days, Shalimar was a villa built in the 2nd Century where one Kashmiri King Pravarasena II used to stay when he went to visit his guru at Harwan. Praversena II founded the city of Srinagar and ruled Kashmir from 79 AD to 139 AD. After his reign, it fell into ruin, but the village there kept the name, Shalimar. In 1619 the sensualist Emperor Jehangir ordered a garden to be laid out at this spot for his love, Nur Jehan "light of the world". It is said that Emperor Jehangir and his wife Nur Jahan were so enamored of Kashmir that during summer they moved to Srinagar with their full court entourage from Delhi. Shalimar Bagh was their imperial summer residence and the Royal Court. They crossed the arduous snowy passes of the Pir Panjal mountain range on elephants to reach Srinagar.

3 Nishat Garden” The Garden of Pleasure”

Hotel Taxi Adventure by Ahanger HOBO
In l633 by the brother of NurJehan, Asaf Khan invited his brother-in-law Emperor Jehangir to a fancy banquet to be held in the marble pavilion of the garden. The emperor became jealous of the beauty of the garden and ordered the water supply to be cut off. One by one the fountains went dry and the garden beds began to wilt and die. The loyal gardener could not bear to see his master and his beautiful flowers so dejected and secretly turned the water supply back on. Furious, Jehangir sent for the gardener. The gardener stood stoically for his actions, saying he simply could not bear to see such beauty die. The courage of the gardener struck an attender chord in his heart. Once upon a time, Emperor Jahangir loved a gardener's daughter, Anarkali, who was courageous enough to stand up to his father and defend her love. He, therefore, restored the water supply from the same stream that fed his own royal garden, Shalimar.

4 Cheshma Shahi Garden “The Royal Spring”

Hotel Taxi Adventure by Ahanger HOBO
This was built by Shah Jahan (Emperor Jahangir's son) in l642. It's known as “Royal Spring' due to the mineral-rich spring water that feeds the watercourses. The source of this water emerges within a pavilion at the top of the garden. Many visitors to these gardens believe in the healing properties of this water and come here to the source to drink.

2023.03.30 19:42 ll--o--ll Return to home-away format: A rebalancing act for IPL teams Cricbuzz

Return to home-away format: A rebalancing act for IPL teams Cricbuzz
If the last season represented a new start for all of the teams in the IPL, then so does this one. While the 2022 edition took place after the hard reset of a mega auction, leaving the 10 franchises to assess the balance and depth of their squads, 2023 will be much the same as the tournament returns to a home-and-away format for the first time in three years.
This will be a game changer for all of the teams, who picked entirely new combinations ahead of last year's tournament but then saw the group stages take place at just three venues across Maharashtra. How will they fare now that they will be playing a large portion of their games on home territory, as well as travelling to a wider range of away venues? In assessing who might benefit from this change, let's take a look at four pivotal teams.
We will start with the two fan favourites - Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians - who finished at the foot of the table last season, and see if the switch in format might assist a revival. Then we will look at two teams who have performed well and appear to still have the team combinations to thrive in switch in format might assist a revival. Then we will look at two teams who have performed well and appear to still have the team combinations to thrive in this year's tournament.

Chennai Super Kings

A crucial factor is that CSK have always been a difficult team to beat at home, winning 39 of their 55 matches at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium for a win rate of 70.91%. Now that they are returning, can they make it their fortress once again with their current resources?
CSK finished ninth in the table last year, managing just four wins out of 14 matches and only avoiding the wooden spoon on net run rate. Since then they have hired the services of Ben Stokes for a whopping price, the experienced Ajinkya Rahane and Sisanda Magala (after original signing Kyle Jamieson was ruled out with injury).
It's fair to say there will not be much change to their overall balance, since one can assume that Stokes will replace the seasoned matchwinner Dwayne Bravo - although they do play different roles, as Bravo was a bowling allrounder and Stokes is a batting allrounder. Rahane comes in for the retired Robin Uthappa, but is likely to serve as a back-up batsman given that he is an opener and CSK already have the seasoned pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway up top.

Core Playing Combination

  1. Devon Conway (Overseas) 2. Ruturaj Gaikwad 3.Moeen Ali (Overseas) 4. Ben Stokes (Overseas) 5. Ambati Rayudu 6. Shivam Dube 7. Ravindra Jadeja 8. MS Dhoni 9. Deepak Chahar 10. Mitchell Santner / Maheesh Theekshana (Overseas) 11. Simarjeet Singh
The combination mentioned above is likely to feature in most of their matches, particularly at their home venue where they will go with a spin-heavy bowling attack. CSK's success right from 2008 has been their opening pair: Mike Hussey/Murali Vijay, Brendon McCullum/Dwayne Smith, Ruturaj/Faf du Plessis. These combinations have set the tone early on, providing consistency for their top and middle order to take the innings further. The table below shows the impact that opening pairs have made upon their successful campaigns.

https://preview.redd.it/y2jn5478wwqa1.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=fcfb1ee6bead26a64a8f69fe5a288995968697ec
In 2022, they started the first game against KKR with Conway/Ruturaj but surprisingly changed the combination to Ruturaj/Uthappa for the very next game. This backfired badly as the pair went on to average just 12.75 at a low SR of 102. When they went back to Conway/Ruturaj, the pair ended up making 359 runs at an average of 51.2 with a SR of 149. Unfortunately for CSK, none of their top and middle order were consistent through the tournament.
Conway was the only batter to average more than 40 (he averaged 42 at a SR of 145.66) yet he played only seven matches. This highlights the importance of the New Zealander to CSK's batting on home turf, but also represents a dilemma. The decision to sign Magala suggests that they are aware of the weakness in the death bowling department and saw the need to improve it. But how can they bring the South African into the side when Stokes and Moeen Ali are shoo-ins as allrounders, an overseas spinner will be handy at Chepauk and Conway is needed at the top of the order?
This will be the main puzzle for them to figure out. The good news is the return of Deepak Chahar, but overall they look as though they will rely heavily on Stokes' performances to reach the playoffs. Crucial to this may be Stokes' record against spin. In the last 500 deliveries that he has faced against spinners in T20 cricket, he averages 31.13 with a reasonably good SR of 134. This will be a big boost for CSK considering the slow wickets in Chennai.
Mumbai Indians

Five-time champions MI ended up with the wooden spoon last year, also recording four wins out of 14 matches. Nothing worked in their favour - except the emergence of young Indian batter Tilak Verma. MI's blueprint through their successful years was two overseas frontline seamers, one overseas finisher and one overseas opening batter. They changed this last year and paid a heavy price, searching for the right combination through the tournament without ever finding it. Of the 10 teams in the IPL, Mumbai will experience the least change in conditions this season given that they played four league matches at the Wankhede in 2022.
This suggests change in personnel will be as important to a revival for them. They broke the bank for Australian allrounder Cameron Green, and also brought in South African left-arm seamer Duan Jansen and experienced leggie Piyush Chawla, along with some domestic recruits. Jasprit Bumrah's injury will be a massive blow for MI to deal with. And with Jhye Richardon also been ruled out, there's plenty of work to be done to get their core combination right. The good news is that Jofra Archer is back and actively playing, but he is also someone known for his injuries.
On top of that, the MI spin department does not look threatening. So if Archer breaks down in the middle of the tournament, they will have to rely on their batting to bail them out on a high scoring Wankhede pitch.

Core Playing Combination

  1. Ishan Kishan 2. Rohit Sharma 3. Surya Kumar Yadav 4. Tilak Verma 5. Cameron Green (Overseas) 6. Tim David (Overseas) 7. Ramandeep Singh 8. Mohd Arshad Khan 9. Jofra Archer (Overseas) 10. Jason Behrendorff (Overseas) 11. Kumar Karthikeya
This is the best balance they can think of, but they will have lots of headaches as far as the bowling unit is concerned - particularly on the batting-friendly pitches of their home ground.
In the last five years of the IPL, the 55 matches played at the Wankhede have produced an average score of 171, which is relatively high. Unfortunately they don't have a proven Indian seamer to replace Bumrah, and also lack a wicket-taking spinner in the middle overs.
If their seamers don't start well in the powerplay, they will likely end up conceding big scores. Archer also looked short of his dangerous best on his return in the SA20 league, taking 10 wickets with an Economy of 7.73, while Behrendorff's last IPL appearance was in 2019. The left-armer's stats read 165 runs in 19 overs with an ECO of 8.68, and 5 wickets at a SR of 22.8, which doesn't look highly encouraging.
Cameron Green, on the other hand, averages 16.33 at a SR of 137.64 with the bat, and an ECO of 9.04 with the ball at a SR of 26.40 in his relatively short T20 career. Ramandeep Singh is new to this league with only a few games under his belt, and Arshad Khan will make his debut for everyone to see if he can live up to the hype created by the media. Switching to the spin department, Kumar Karthikeya played just four games last season taking 5 wickets, and Shokeen played five games for 2 wickets.
Another option is Chawla, who went unsold last year and had low returns in IPL 2020, with his 21 overs going for 191 runs at a high ECO of 9.09 and yielding just 6 wickets. He played a solitary game in 2021. The average ECO for spin bowlers at the Wankhede since IPL 2008 is 7.5 - a low figure for a high-scoring venue, showing that spinners play a key role in owning the middle overs. This suggests that Mumbai will have a huge problem.
Going through their batting, Rohit Sharma hasn't averaged 30 in the last six seasons; Ishan Kishan had a middling outing last year with 418 runs at an average of 32.15 and a SR of 120; Tim David is highly skilled but remains an unproven commodity in the IPL, and allrounders Ramandeep Singh and Arshad Khan are both inexperienced.
Similar to CSK, only one batter, Suryakumar Yadav (Avg: 43.28 and SR: 145.67), managed to average more than 40 last season. Young Tilak Verma showed lot of promise with 397 runs at 36.09 with a SR of 131, but MI genuinely look weak on paper - particularly if their top three fail. With a struggle to find a combination to fill up the holes in both batting and bowling, MI might well have another tough year.

Rajasthan Royals

The 2008 winner and last year's finalist, Royals certainly look well balanced in all departments - particularly considering their home venue of Jaipur. Prasidh Krishna's absence for the season is a concern for them while Obed McCoy will miss at least the first few games, but they have good reserve options and should be the team to beat in the tournament.
They retained most of their core players and added the seasoned allrounder Jason Holder, who will play a major role for them batting at No 7 and bowling four overs. They also brought in the services of Joe Root, but will find it difficult to fit him into the combination, while hard-hitting Donovon Ferreira will be the back-up plan for Shimron Hetymer.
Adam Zampa might also struggle to get a game considering the success of the spin pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal last year. Wicketkeeper-batter Kunal Rathore, seamer KM Asif, leggie M. Ashwin, allrounder Akash Vashist and seamer Abdul are the local new signings, ensuring that they literally have back up for every position in the core playing XI.
Core Playing Combination
  1. Jos Buttler (Overseas) 2. Yashahvi Jaiswal 3. Devdutt Padikkal 4. Sanju Samson 5. Shimron Hetmyer (Overseas) 6. Riyan Parag 7. Jason Holder (Overseas) 8. Ravichandran Ashwin 9. Kuldeep Sen / Navdeep Saini 10. Trent Boult (Overseas) 11. Yuzvendra Chahal
In the last two years of IPL (2018 & 2019) in Jaipur, spinners have an ECO of 7.49 with a SR of 22. Royals have the best spin bowling combination - in terms of both experience and skill - with Ashwin and Chahal. Both were impressive last year, with Ashwin taking 12 wickets with an ECO of 7.50, and Chahal claiming 27 wickets at an ECO of 7.75. Another key factor in Jaipur is the powerplay, where teams on average score 50/1.
The Royals have Trent Boult to counter that problem - in the last three IPL seasons, he has taken 18 wickets in the powerplay and conceded just 7.91 per over. New recruit Holder is also effective in this period - since Jan 2019 he has an ECO of 7.51 in the powerplay with a reasonable SR of 19. This will be a good combination to have along with the pacy and talented Kuldeep Sen. Ashwin and Chahal together in the middle overs will be a challenge to contend for any good batsmen.
The Royals' weakness is their death overs bowling, which they will have to plan carefully. Holder since Jan 2019 has a high ECO of 10.57 in the death overs, while Boult has an ECO of 10.94. If they can sort out their death over problems, this bowling unit will dominate.

https://preview.redd.it/a06wslz7xwqa1.png?width=558&format=png&auto=webp&s=3dc1fd9d2fa89293cc69ef6e61a2c38290018941
The Performance Index in Jaipur for a successful batting unit is 155 (Avg + SR), and if you see the stats for all the Royals frontline batters in last year's IPL, everyone except Padikkal (but including Ashwin) has matched that comfortably. So they have a really consistent and balanced batting line up to get scores between 180 and 190, which could be defended by a bowling line up with three reliable performers in Boult, Chahal and Ashwin.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Having made it to the playoffs in the last three years, RCB have been consistent apart from winning the trophy. Yet it's worth noting that those three seasons have all been played away from their home ground, where the pitch often renders matches into a bat-vs-bat contest.
Do they have the resources to maintain their good recent record now that they will be playing at the Chinnaswamy again? They have maintained almost the same core to their team, but with a few interesting additions in the auction. The new players are more about having a strong bench, with Reece Topley providing back-up for Josh Hazlewood, and Michael Bracewell warming the bench for Wanindu Hasaranga.
Core Playing Combination
  1. Faf du Plessis (Overseas) 2. Rajat Patidar 3. Virat Kohli 4. Mahipal Lomror 5. Glenn Maxwell (Overseas) 6. Dinesh Karthik 7. Shahbaz Ahmed 8. Wanindu Hasaranga (Overseas) 9. Harshal Patel 10. Josh Hazlewood (Overseas) 11. Mohammed Siraj
The above combination looks a well-oiled machine, with all bases covered - be it batting depth until No 8 or variety in the bowling, where they have two quick bowlers in Siraj and Hazlewood, Harshal Patel with his variations and wicket[1]taking ability, frontline spin options of Hasaranga and Shahbaz and also the part-time but effective off spin of Glenn Maxwell.
The average score at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in its last two years of hosting IPL matches (2018 & 2019) is a massive 185/6. Generally it needs two batsmen to bat 70 balls together to post a high score, which has been the trend in Bangalore right from the first IPL in 2008. The most important thing is to have three bowlers in your line up who can provide regular breakthroughs.

https://preview.redd.it/gcygk0ulxwqa1.png?width=547&format=png&auto=webp&s=74006b6a7c02a1804844b1b404fb6064039c29dc
The above table from last year's IPL makes for a positive reading if you are a RCB fan. Three bowlers - Hasaranga, Harshal Patel and Hazlewood - were amongst gthe wickets, suggesting they have what it takes to keep batsmen honest at the Chinnaswamy. It's worth noting that they picked up an impressive tally of 65 wickets between them.
The question will be how much those figures mean when the bowlers find themselves back in the unforgiving conditions of the Chinnaswamy. Siraj was off-colour last season and has conceded at an ER of 10.1 in Bangalore, so will his recent performances with India lift his confidence sufficiently to have a better IPL?

https://preview.redd.it/a7jg6ettxwqa1.png?width=562&format=png&auto=webp&s=20fa54c3b2e8d5639944d3b88947465945feaac7

https://preview.redd.it/8lpbgkouxwqa1.png?width=543&format=png&auto=webp&s=a73b690e94ef093ebcfad306b6cebdbe03679ae7
The batting table from last season again looks positive when you consider a Performance Index criteria of 160 in Bangalore. Patidar, Karthik, Du Plessis, Maxwell and Lomror meet the criteria and only Kohli misses out. But Kohli has been a transformed man of late, regaining form and consistency since the last IPL in all formats. The main issue to address in the batting is the top three batters' SR in the powerplay. Last year, Faf's SR facing 173 balls was 119, Kohli's SR facing 116 balls was 106 and Patidar's SR facing 92 balls was 121.
The stats for the last three IPL seasons in Bangalore (2017-2019) show a high reading of 50/1 in the powerplay. This is where they have to change their approach and be a little more aggressive, setting the tone for the middle and lower order - which contains two inexperienced batters in Lomror and Shahbaz Ahmed - to rack up some huge scores. Even though most of their batters in the middle and lower middle order meet the performance criteria, only Karthik has a big average.
So it will be important for the top three to do a lot of the legwork on home soil. If they do so, the playoffs won't be far away for this well balanced team.

Keep an eye out for the RSAC Innovation Sandbox and RSAC Launch Pad finalists announcement later this month!
Come play in the RSAC Sandbox, where you learn while doing! Explore multiple play areas in Aerospace, Adversary, AppSec, Dark Arts, the Internet of Things, Industrial Control Systems, and lLockpicking. Volunteers operate each station and are ready to answer your questions, give you a guided tour, or the opportunity to test your skills in any of those areas.

Level up your skills with Trainings. RSAC partners with leading associations such as CSA, FAIR Institute, InfraGard National Members Alliance, and (ISC)2, to offer Trainings. These two-day courses take place Sunday, April 23, and Monday, April 24, and offer intensive, hands-on instruction on a variety of cybersecurity topics. Leave with a broader skillset and—in many cases—CE credits. Open to Full Conference Pass, Expo Plus Pass, or Expo Pass holders for an additional cost.
Pricing. RSAC 2023 offers a wide variety of pass types to fit your individual needs. Check out our Pass & Rates page to see current discounted rates.
  • Full Conference Pass – Access to everything RSAC 2023 offers including all Keynotes, Track Sessions, Learning Labs, Networking, Innovation programs, the Expo, and more.
  • Expo Plus Pass – Access to all South Stage Keynotes, West Stage Keynotes (Tuesday-Thursday), Innovation programs, the Expo, and more.
  • Expo Pass – Attend West Stage Keynotes (Tuesday – Thursday), Expo and RSAC Early Stage Expo, Sponsor Briefings, Welcome Reception, and more.
Can’t make it in person? No problem! We’re offering an On Demand Pass. Watch Keynotes and Track Sessions on demand–and earn CE credits. The content will be available approximately four hours after the live occurrence. Plus, browse through hundreds of RSAC 2023 exhibitors in RSAC Marketplace, join exclusive post-Conference interactive session follow ups, and more.
Earn CE Credits. Our mission at RSA Conference is to provide programs that help ensure cybersecurity practitioners around the world get the knowledge they need to spur professional growth and protect their organizations from cyberthreats.
We will be partnering with CompTIA, FAIR Institute, GIAC Certifications, IAPP, ISACA, (ISC)2 at RSAC 2023 to offer Continuing Education (CE) Credits to our attendees. Credits vary by association, as do submission details.

2023.03.30 19:30 Himekat Trip Report - Wakayama City, Shingu, Nachi Falls, Hongu, and Ise

Background

My husband and I have been traveling to Japan several times a year for more than a decade. We’re both into the 20-somethings for number of trips we’ve taken, so our trips these days tend to be relaxed and a little out of the way. We were supposed to do this Wakayama area trip in 2020, but that obviously didn’t happen. My husband speaks, reads, and writes Japanese at an intermediate level, so we don’t have problems with language on our trips. I read katakana, some kanji, and speak basic words and phrases.

Trip Introduction

This Wakayama City/Shingu/Ise adventure was part of a larger 19-day trip. We flew into Tokyo Narita and immediately took the shinkansen to Osaka. We spent 4-5 days in Osaka doing some low-key stuff like errands (for instance, renewing our TTP cards) and drinking coffee (Glitch, Mel, Millpour, Takamura, Lilo). After that, we went to Koyasan for a few days, staying at Ichijoin, where we have stayed several times in the past. We even got engaged there in 2019!

Transportation

For the portion of the trip in this report, we utilized the Ise-Kumano-Wakayama Pass, a 5-day tourist pass. See here for details, although I will say that even buying the pass online cost ¥12,220, so that page’s pricing isn’t quite up to date. We ended up getting about ¥21,130 worth of train and bus travel out of it, so it was well worth it.
Our breakdown of rides/costs looked something like this:
The pass itself is a little weird, though. It’s not linked from any of the main JR pages, and if you reserve it online, you cannot use a machine to pick it up (you must go to a manned window). We had to ask around Osaka Station to figure out where to go, and none of the station staff we talked to knew what this pass was. We didn’t really have trouble using it once we got it, although a couple of bus drivers seemed a tiny bit surprised to see it. Overall, a really good value. Do note that you can only reserve seats up to four times with this particular pass, which was perfect for us, since we knew ahead of time that we’d likely want to take four limited express trains.

Wakayama City

Hotel: Candeo Hotel Nankai Wakayama at Wakayamashi Station. This was actually an amazing hotel with new, clean rooms, a great view, and a rooftop public bath, located right at Wakayamashi Station. I’ve never stayed at a Candeo before, but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for them in the future, as this was pretty impressive in the realm of mid-range to upper-range business hotels. We paid ¥14,937/night (about $110 USD), which was what we’d consider a great value.
March 18: Arrived in Wakayama City from Koyasan (via the Nankai-Koya Line and Wakayama Line). Our luggage had already been forwarded from Osaka, so we only had small backpacks. We stuck our things in a locker and hopped on the Wakayama Dentetsu (the line “run by cats”) and visited a few of the stations to see the cats and get some goshuin. Had amazing late afternoon pizza for lunch at Alla Luce. Did a sake tasting at Heiwa Saketen and had soba for dinner at Shinanoji Kino after visiting our hotel’s baths and relaxing for the afternoon.
March 19: Our room attendant at Koyasan (who always remembers us!) recommended we visit Kada while in Wakayama City, so we did that early in the morning. We went to the shrine there, walked by the seaside, ate amazing grilled shellfish. We walked around Wakayama City in the afternoon, did laundry, and had a low-key dinner at the Pronto at Wakayamashi Station (which turns into a wine and scotch bar at night).

Shingu

Hotel: Hotel New Palace in Shingu. There weren’t a lot of options in Shingu for “real” hotels (not hostels or guesthouses), so this one was perfectly serviceable. It’s a decent walk from the station (probably a solid 7-10 minutes), and it definitely lacks any sort of personal touches or charm, but it was fine for a few nights. We paid ¥12,100/night (about $90 USD), which I’d say was high for the level of the room and service.
March 20: This was the first day our Ise-Kumano-Wakayama Pass was active. The day before, we used our pass to get tickets for the Kuroshio Limited Express to Shingu, where we were staying for the next few days. We arrived in Shingu in the early afternoon and visited the Shingu Castle Ruins (really cute park with amazing views), Kumano Hayatasha Taisha, and Kamikura Shrine (which had way too many stairs!). Dinner was udon and tempura at Masaya near the hotel, which definitely felt like we were eating in someone’s living room. No English menu, and the lady taking our order also spoke no English. Honestly, “no English” was a very common theme of this part of our trip.
March 21: We visited Oyunohara Torii Gate and Kumano Hongu Taisha, which were both pretty incredible sights to behold. The buses run infrequently in that area, so with so much time, we took a quick ten minute taxi ride over to Yunomine Onsen where we boiled eggs in the water in the town center and had lunch. We accidentally ended up walking part of the Kumano Kodo to get back to Hongu, where we enjoyed some wagashi and tea at Yata-an before catching a bus back to Shingu.
March 22: We visited Nachi Falls and Kumano Nachi Taisha, completing our visits to the three Kumano taishas. We took an early Kuroshio Limited Express down to Kii-Katsuura (making use of that pass!) and then a bus to Nachi. The whole area was beautiful, although it once again had so many steps. I was pretty sick of hiking and steps at this point. Regardless, we got goshuin, saw the falls, drank the waterfall water, and my husband picked up a bunch of omamori for his coworkers. We were back in Shingu by mid-afternoon, where we had great sushi at Jofuku near Shingu Station. The afternoon was relaxing in our hotel’s public bath before okonomiyaki at Go Mi Hiro nearby. The place was super popular, and I’m glad my husband speaks Japanese, because the menu was entirely in Japanese and waitress asked us to write down our orders and hand them to her. Then we had an early night at the hotel to watch the women’s short program of the World Figure Skating Championships, which were taking place in Saitama (yay, I was in the same time zone as a major competition for once!).

Ise

Hotel: Sanco Inn Iseshi at Iseshi Station. This was another pretty bare-bones business hotel, although perfectly serviceable. It was right near the train station, which is a huge must-have for us in most cases. It also had laundry machines, which I wasn’t expecting, but that was pretty welcome since we were caught in the rain one of the days. It cost ¥17,100/night (about $128 USD), which was pretty high all things considered, but I really liked the location.
March 23: We grabbed some breakfast at the konbini and hopped on a very early train to Ise (Nanki Limited Express to Rapid Mie). It was pouring rain, but we still decided to head to Futamiokitama-jinja and Meoto Iwa (Wedded Rocks). It was too rainy to do much, so we headed back to the our hotel’s general area to get some castella and coffee at Terrace Cafe while we waited for check-in. After that, we relaxed for the early evening at the hotel’s public bath, did some laundry, and then went to get amazing pasta bolognese nearby at Bigoli. They literally have one thing on the menu, and that’s it. After, we returned to the hotel to watch the men’s short program for figure skating.
March 24: We visited Ise Grand Shine—so important that it is merely known as “Jingu”. That’s it. It’s the jingu. We visited the main shrine and the outer gate, ate a bunch of street food, and walked a lot. This was the last day of our Ise-Kumano-Wakayama Pass though, so we took some buses around to make use of it. While I’d say that Ise Jingu was interesting for the religious and historical aspects, it’s also one of the plainest shrines I’ve ever been to. It also has one of the plainest goshuin I’ve ever seen. I guess when you’re the most sacred shrine, you don’t need anything fancy! The streets leading up to it are packed full of food and shops, though, and it was super crowded. In the afternoon, we headed to Camino Coffee for awesome espresso, and at night, we went to Takumi to eat Matsusaka beef—one of the big, famous, ridiculously good beef producing regions alongside Kobe and Omi. Then we went back to the hotel on the early side to watch Kaori Sakamoto take the women’s world title in figure skating.
March 25: We traveled back to Osaka via the Kintetsu Limited Express for the final days of our trip, which we spent in Osaka, Arima Onsen, and Nagoya before returning to Tokyo for our flight home.

Mask Usage

We arrived before the change in official recommendation, but even after that, mask usage was like 95%+ both inside and outside for much of our trip. The exception to this was in Shingu, Hongu, and the Nachi Falls area. For the four days we were in that region, mask usage was much, much lower. I would say it sometimes dropped as low as 30% or 40% outside, and even inside, it was sometimes as low as 50%. Shopkeepers and restaurant staff also often didn’t wear masks, and no one seemed to care much either way because nothing was overly crowded. It was also reasonably warm and sunny for much of that time, which may have contributed to people dropping their masks.
We wore masks in accordance with local norms, so masks on most of the time in cities, but we eschewed them a lot of the time in the Shingu area.

Lessons from Wakayama

Overall Random Trip Stats

Edit: My husband insisted I mention this adorable and amazing Yatagarasu daruma we got in Hongu. It was really common to see them for sale there, but they weren't anywhere else (not even Nachi).

2023.03.30 19:27 SunshineGoldenHour How do you stay safe (physically and professionally) when you report?

I’ve been I guess what you might say was akin to being a whistleblower within a Fortune 500 company where some carelessness (?) in a department was resulting in about $5 million annually being spent duplicating orders for parts purchased in the gray market for repairs to customer units. It was left to upper management to explore if anyone was benefitting financially from that situation and I was not given the results of their investigation. I didn't have the ability to investigate with that level of oversight. Whistleblower may not be the accurate term when you report it internally? I’m not certain. I’m sure someone will set me straight about that. I privately investigated my suspicions and came up with the documentation to substantiate the problem before bringing it up with management.
The company thankfully took steps to address and fix the problem. I was in my mid-twenties at the time. I never thought twice about calling it out because I was young and eager to prove my skills. I confess I didn’t fully think through the potential consequences of uncovering and reporting the over-expenditure, though I will say it did haunt me for many years after when the company’s correction to the problem resulted in a small department losing their jobs. I was given a promotion and a raise for my efforts at the time. I do feel confident I did the right thing reporting the problem as the company holds a responsibility to shareholders to address those kinds of problems and maximize profits, but I do carry some shame that I got a promotion when others were let go. I mention this backstory to give insight that I’m not prone to coming up with false allegations or wild speculations. I have proven myself fairly sharp in the past at spotting procedural/clerical problems that resulted in significant fiscal over-expenditures that other people have missed.
I took a timeout for a couple decades to raise children and then recently went back to work for a government entity in a temporary position. I’m leaving that position to move into a permanent role somewhere else within days, but unfortunately, I’ve stumbled on what could be a significant clerical error that is potentially overcharging certain taxpayers significant funds. The people who are potentially making the error cannot benefit financially from it, so as best I can tell, it is not malicious or intentional fraud, "just" an error. I have a working theory for how this potentially happened that isn’t worth getting into here. I do think it may be only limited to a year or two of data being keyed incorrectly. Fixing the error, however, would likely require a lengthy audit that would spread from this entity across and then need to be transmitted across a couple hundred taxing entities to refund taxpayers for overpayment. There wouldn’t be an “easy” fix.
I have briefly raised the issue on my way out the door with a supervisor that I trust (buried deep in an email documenting insights observed during my tenure there) but I don’t know how likely it is that they will pursue it because everyone there seems to walk on eggshells in regard to protecting their positions, and I suspect they likely will not want to rock the boat. I have what I believe are legitimate concerns for why I don’t think raising this problem would go over well and for why they may want to sweep it under the carpet.
Unfortunately, I know how my mind works, and it’s likely to become the proverbial loose thread that my mind will pull at, even though I am moving on. I have enough knowledge of what I suspect is happening to be able to do what I believe would be a decently thorough personal investigation by compiling data from public sources to be able to substantiate whether this error is indeed happening and to come up with an idea of how pervasive it is, though that would be a significantly time-consuming pursuit for me. While I have brought this up internally with a supervisor in passing as I am in the process of leaving, I wouldn’t want to bring it up with any oversight/outside entities without any real documentation.
The entity that may be responsible for the error has all kinds of political entanglements, and though I didn't give a thought to reporting consequences when I was in my twenties, I’m old enough now to hold concerns about how this revelation would be received and potential repercussions. This overcharge being made to taxpayers would be a substantial black eye for the entity at a time where it is already unpopular. I’m not immediately concerned about losing my job. I’m already in the process of leaving (within days). I wouldn’t be anonymous because if I reported it though, as they’d very easily figure out that it was me that uncovered it and ran with it. I have perhaps read too many novels or seen too many movies though, because I am actually concerned for both my physical safety and my professional reputation if the suspicions were confirmed and I moved forward.
I’m torn at letting it go and taking the path of least resistance versus digging into it. I have a basic idea of who I would need to report it to that would have the authority to investigate but not full confidence that is the right path. I think I am hoping that I will either talk myself out of exploring and reporting it, or else hoping that I am wrong and that the data compilation will prove that. I sincerely don’t think I’m wrong though. This is not my first rodeo. I’m not particularly given to conspiracy theory thinking at all, but the situation feels potentially dangerous for me to pursue, and I’m really torn about how to proceed. I’d welcome any insight about things you might recommend someone in my shoes should consider.
TLDR: I may have stumbled on a government entity that is making a clerical error that potentially results in taxpayers being overcharged. I wouldn't have anonymity in reporting the situation, and though I am not worried about losing my job because I've already found a new one, I am potentially concerned about my safety and professional reputation if I discover my suspicions are correct and choose to move forward with reporting it. I'd like advice on how to proceed.

2023.03.30 19:25 RiotDog1312 Practical Responses to Liberal Calls for Gun Control

Obviously, current events have once again brought about the hollering over gun control. The right-wing counterarguments are usually just something about "my Second Amendment is sacred", which is frankly a shit argument for any kind of practical engagement. So, I think we should come up with some pragmatic, specific objections to the efficacy of the most commonly proposed gun control laws, and why we should focus elsewhere. I thought up a few, and would love to hear some others focused on reality, rather than ideology.
"I see a lot of calls along the lines of "ban all guns!" and like...I get wanting to do something, and it feels like an easy solution. The reality is, though, every form of significant gun control ranges from ineffective, to impractical, to outright dangerous to enact. Guns are deeply embedded in American society, and frankly the cat is out of the bag at this point. Examples:
- Increasing and requiring universal background checks: An okay idea, but the majority of firearms sales already require those checks, most of the mass shooters have successfully passed them, and they can be easily bypassed through underground sales or 3D printing of serialized parts. Adding additional disqualifying criteria is a very slippery slope, because it would require things like giving the federal government access to the mental health records of every single citizen. Red flag laws, too, would be easily abused as they're inherently extrajudicial, requiring no actual evidence of a crime or intent to commit one. How many white women do you think would file reports against the black man down the street for "being a threat", and sending cops to the door ready for a gunfight?
- Assault weapons ban: New York has one of those, as does California. They still make up the highest percentage of gun violence in the country, overwhelmingly committed with handguns. Even for rifles, it's incredibly easy to simply ignore legal restrictions if you intend to commit mass violence, as in the case of the Buffalo shooter using magazines and a configuration that was illegal in NY. The actual restrictions imposed on "features" are also completely useless for actually reducing lethality.
- Immediate cessation of all gun sales: Even if all gun sales stopped today, there's 433 million guns already in circulation in the US, 100 million more guns than there are people. With modern 3D printing technology, that number is functionally infinite. Attempting to stop all the private underground gun sales that would occur as a result of a total ban would go about as well as the War On Drugs.
- Mass seizure of guns This one gets floated a lot with comparisons to Australia. Again, 433 million guns. There is no central registry of who the owners are, meaning the only way to track them down would be to manually go through gun store records. There's also no legal requirement to keep track of private sales, so owners can just say "I sold it." The only way to prove them wrong would be to get search warrants to search the homes of hundreds of millions of people, which would end up with a whole lot of Waco-style standoffs. Pro-gun local and state police could also just refuse to enforce those laws, requiring federal agents to do all of the work.

There's also the simple fact that every form of law requires enforcement, a task that falls to cops. With everything we've seen in the last few years and the number of people I see yelling ACAB, do you really trust them to enforce these laws safely and equitably? Especially with the additional surveillance tools and budget such an enforcement would require, and the added pretexts for escalating stops. Black men already make up a disproportionate number of weapons charges despite being in the minority of weapons owners. "I thought he had a gun" is already used as justification for homicide, that would only get worse if guns were also illegal in the first place.
If we genuinely want to reduce gun violence, we HAVE to start at the root, and that root is poverty and the exploitation of capitalism. Housing, education, healthcare, infrastructure, labor reform, community support, a justice system that actually focuses on rehabilitation, all of these things are vastly more effective at reducing violence. Guns may make violence more lethal, but they're just paperweights if we remove the impulses in the first place."
