2023.06.01 21:59 ScarletBurn An American's crazy living-situation. Yes, I've moved 6 times in 9 months. Here's how

I moved a grand total of 6 times during this time period. Some by choice, others by — well — not by choice.
So, after finishing University in my hometown, Florida, I became very bored of the mundane "work, eat, sleep" life. So, I sporadically booked a flight to the sunniest place in Germany — Freiburg im Breisgau. I took a German class in highschool, so I thought why not learn another language while I'm out and about in a place I've never been before. I enrolled in a language school, where they would provide me a visa that lasted 1 year. Now here's where things get juicy.
I arrived by plane (obviously) and was escorted by the language school to my 'family'. I chose to live with a host family because I wanted to learn about German culture, and I wanted to really get into the whole "language speaking" thing. When I arrived, a woman greeted me at the door. She was in her mid 50s, and very tiny. I greeted her and quickly found out that she didn't speak any English. Like, at all. But that was okay with me because that means that I'd be forced to speak German. The issue is that she didn't really speak much German either. Well, somewhere between A2 and B1. Better than me, but... you know. I made myself comfortable in my room and went downstairs for dinner.
Two other students joined us. I asked through Google translate why they were here, because I was informed that I would be the only student. She said that Turkish would be better for her because she didn't understand the question when it was presented in german. It turns out that I was the only student from MY language school. She was working with other language schools, and hosted up to 6 students at a time. Okay, cool. I respect the grind!
I quickly befriended a few people at the language school. These students also had host families, and rambled on about how wonderful they were. Evidently, these hosts made breakfast for the students. It was in the contract, but I assumed that it was optional for the host to provide breakfast. I asked my host 'mom' why I didn't have breakfast and she replied that she didn't want to get up that early, because work for her starts at 10am. ( I leave the house at 8am) I asked if it would be possible for her to provide me with some sort of salami or cheese for breakfast every now and then. She begrudgingly agreed, and the next day I was provided with the worst quality salami I've ever seen in my life. (No offence to Netto) Keep in mind I'm paying this woman 990 euros a month for an 8m² room that includes breakfast and dinner. Yikes.
I offered for her to pay me back a few euros so I could make my own breakfast. She told me that she wasn't able to do that, because she needed the money. So, I had to buy my own things for breakfast. One day, she told me that I was taking up too much fridge space. I didn't understand exactly what she meant because her Turkish accent was very hard to understand, so I nodded my head and moved all of my things to the corner of the fridge. (It was 4 items: salami, cheese, mayo, and mustard) She raised an eyebrow at me, sighed, and left the room. One of the students who was sitting in the kitchen at the time told me that she told me to remove my things from the fridge altogether because they were taking up space and it was disrespectful. Oh man. Okay. I just threw everything away because I was so frustrated.
She also had these weird "rules" I had to follow.
- Doing laundry was 5 euros per load.
- I was not to open the window at night. It was SO hot at night and I would wake up at 4am with my bedsheets drenched in sweat. She said that if I wanted to wash my bedsheets more than once very other week, I would be charged accordingly.
- If I had a friend come over, it was 30 euros if they stayed past 9pm.
- No meat was to be eaten unless it was a Friday.
- No alcohol (I'm 23 years old???)
But I sucked up these rules becuase at the end of the day, it was HER house. I just thought that because I was paying a large sum for so little, I'd be allowed a little more control.
Anyway, a week or two after me moving in, my host mom asked me to come with her to meet her friends. I felt like we got off on the wrong foot so I thought I'd tag along. Keep in mind this is August, so it's about 28C outside. I wore a tank top and some pants. When I greeted her outside, she looked me up and down and told me to change. Politely, though. I changed into one of my sleeveless turtlenecks. When she saw this, she sighed and handed me her jacket. Weird, I thought, but it was a friendly gesture — right? Hmm. We drove to a park nearby our village and there was a large group of people waiting for us. They were all dressed rather modestly for the weather, but I thought nothing of it. She then explains to me that she's a Jehovah's Witness, and that this is a Jehovah's Witness meeting. Oh, okay. I have no issues with religion, but MAN. I'll spare you the details. Everyone at the meeting was incredibly kind, but they kept on trying to talk to me about God and the Bible.
They added me to a groupchat and told me to meet with them every Friday. If I wasn't able to make it in person, then I could join on Zoom. I didn't know what to say. It was around this time that I got a message from the school saying that they were going to move me to a new host family. Just my luck! This was because she was going to see her mother for 3 months in Turkey.
A few days after I got the notice, I was scheduled to be picked up and driven across the village by my new host 'dad'. He was a German man in his late 60s. He seemed to be kind although kinda' standoff-ish. My room was above his. Great! It was nearly 28m², and I had tons of light flowing into my room. He told me the rules of the house. Pretty basic and very understandable. However, there was something that stuck out to me. I had to ring the doorbell every time I wanted to use the kitchen.
I asked him why. He said "I'm a nudist, so I must make myself presentable when you come down." Oh god, okay. It's HIS house, ya know? I asked him about midnight snacks, because I occasionally come home late (over the weekend) and during the week I generally eat later. He said that it wouldn't be possible for me to use the kitchen past 10pm. He added that no snacks were allowed in my room. Sternly, he told me that my "late nights" would have to come to an end. Hah! I asked my German friends if this was normal and they said he was "just being German".
There was a butcher shop about a 4 minute walk from the house, so I thought I'd get him a "welcome" gift. I knew he ate meat, because for dinner we ate weinerschnitzel. I picked out a nice link of salami and handed it to him the next time we sat down for dinner. He seemed to be pleased. He asked where I bought it from, and I told him it was from the nearby butcher shop. When I say the atmosphere changed, it CHANGED. He looked down on me with a slight glare and said "I do not want such a thing. Do you know where this meat is from? I do not know. That shop probably treats the animals horribly. I do not support that." Well, the rest of dinner was awkward.
There was an instance where two Italian students were staying with us, and we had dinner with them. They spoke B2 German, and I was still at A1 (if that, honestly). They were chatting up a storm and I sat quietly and tried to listen. One of the Italian girls asked me in German if I was shy and I told her that I wasn't but I just couldn't keep up with the conversation. The host 'dad' laughed and told them in English that I "refused to speak German" because "[my] German was embarassingly bad." Hmm, that didn't feel too good. I didn't speak to him in German ever again and till this very day I struggle with speaking because I keep hearing him in my head. Ah!
Now, around this time (about 2.5 months in) I've been making more local friends and they've been telling me that I can easily rent my own apartment for the amount of money I'm paying the school. The thought of independance got me excited, so I called up the school and said HEY, refund me all the money for the host families — I'm moving into my OWN place! I hopped on WG Gesucht and found a room with a guy right in the city center of Freiburg. Hell yeah! 350 Euros a month, too. The lease was limited to about 3 months, though.
The man was in his early 30s and he told me that he preferred to keep a quiet household. Totally fair, as I literally lived in the livingroom and there wasn't much space for guests. Throughout my whole stay, he probably spoke a good 30 combined minutes to me. Like, in total. These 30 minutes consisted of him telling me to limit my bath time to 5 minutes. I'm not saying he would stand outside the bathroom and count the seconds I was in the tub, but he would coincidentally knock on the door and tell me that my 5 minutes was up whenever he was home. When I told him that I wouldn't mind sending him extra money for the water usage, he said "Oh, would you like to support the Russian government?" Uh, what? I gave up on showering/bathing when he was around. He charged me 70 euros extra anyway, and said that he didn't have the water bill on paper but that these costs were correct.
While all of this was taking place, my language school friends convinced me to download Tinder. Sure, why not. After a few dates with some kind men, I met this German guy "Steve" and we clicked pretty well. He unfortunately had a ski trip planned for when I moved out, so I wasn't able to stay with him in his apartment while I searched for my own.
Anyway, I went back on WG Gesucht in an effort to find another room/flat to stay in. And I did! Oh, it was lovely. A 1 bed 1 bath, 70m right next to the Alt Stadt. I could finally have privacy! I spoke with the landlord and she gave me the greenlight to rent till August of 2023. Perfect! I was to sign a contract 2 weeks before the move-in date. When the sign-date arrived, I got a call from her saying "actually we decided to give this to a different tenant. Thank you for your time!" Ooookay, so I'm basically homeless in 2 weeks. I spoke with my current landlord, and he told me I could stay an extra 2 weeks till I found a place. Great! I went back on the WG-Gesucht grind again. I found an even BETTER apartment closer to the city center, and the landlord seemed to be lovely. Just 3 days before I moved in, I got a text from the current landlord saying that they were unable to offer me the apartment due to an "unforseen circumstance". Bro. What? I'm going to be homeless in 3 days. Are you serious? I signed a contract and everything.
Well, it turns out that the contract wasn't valid because they weren't the landlords. They're tenants. And their "landlord" IS ALSO A TENANT. Apparently the actual landlord found out that they were subleasing illegally, so they were being evicted. How fun!
So at this point, I'm pretty desperate. The friends I made were gone, because guess what. It's almost December, and everyone flew back home. My German friends are all students so they went back to their little German villages in the middle of nowhere and couldn't take me. I desperately put ads up on Kleinanzeigen and WG Gesucht, but to no avail. Everyone is on vacation! Hotels were 100+ Euros a night, but it seemed that that was the only option. I found an Airbnb that charged only 650 euros for 15 nights, which should give me enough time to find another room. So I booked my stay. Just a day before I moved out, I recieved a message on Kleinanzeigen. A room in Waldkirch — a village about a 25 minute train ride away. Fine. I'll take it. When I tell you I RAN into that apartment, I was literally shaking the landlords hand with teary eyes telling her how much I appreciated it.
I canceled my AirBnB, but they didn't give any refunds. Yeah, it was in the description before I made the purchase, but I'd rather live in my own little room in the mountains than some 12m room shared with absolute strangers. So, I'm out 650 bucks — BUT I HAVE A PLACE! My current landlord charged me 45 euros because I begged for one extra night. He didn't even have anyone moving in my room for another 2 weeks, but oh well.
Back to Waldkirch. Now, this cute little place was in an Altbau tucked between the mountains. It was wonderful. The kitchen was all cute and old, Edeka was a 1 minute walk away, there was a local market that was open every Saturday and Sunday... the people around me were all 60+ and smiled when I attempted to speak German to them. God, I loved it. My landlord also would cook for me when she had free time. I had my own little bathroom and I had a castle view from my window. My room was also nearly 30m²!
Unfortunately, the landlord told me that I had to be out by Feburary. However, I was becoming closer with Steve, the Tinder guy. He had a temporary job in Freiburg and because it was coming to an end and he was going to start Med school in Berlin, things seemed pretty gloomy. But I had this crazy thought. Because my language school was in two locations, Freiburg and Berlin, I could just switch schools and still legally reside in Germany. I could just... live with him. Crazy? Crazy. My parents and friends threw a fit. Anyway, I packed my bags and moved in with him to Frankfurt, where his parents stayed. Best month of my life. I made sure everything was okay at my language school, and we made the switch.
So, now we had to hunt for an apartment in Berlin. And man, let me tell you guys. That's HARD. After a while of searching, we finally landed a place in Moabit. March, April, and May have passed. Unfortunately for us, our lease ends in August. So guess who's moving again! Me! At least now I have someone with me to hold my hand through this stressful process. (If anyone has any long-term flats for rent... help!)
I've fallen too in love with this man because I'm now about to apply for the self employment visa so I can stay in germany until his med school finishes. It's been a crazy ride, but I'm so glad I came to Germany. Maybe I'll make a post about all of the other crazy non-housing related German stories!

2023.06.01 14:12 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Jackie Jensen, "The Golden Boy"

Jackie Jensen, "The Golden Boy", was a superstar athlete in the 1940s who seemed destined for greatness as the heir to Joe DiMaggio... only to be supplanted by a different golden boy, the great Mickey Mantle.
Jensen would eventually live up to the hype, but with the Red Sox -- but his career ended prematurely because, as baseball expanded to the west coast, his fear of flying made road games unbearable!
The Yankees between 1947 and 1964 were utterly dominant, winning 15 pennants and 10 World Series. And it wasn't just the major league team that was successful. The Yankees of this era were loaded up and down the system, from Rookie ball to their two Triple-A teams!
With such a loaded major league roster, the Yankees had many talented players stuck either on the end of the bench or in the minors who would eventually find an opportunity with other teams, including Bob Cerv, Vic Power, Gus Triandos, Lew Burdette, Jerry Lumpe, Bob Porterfield, and Bob Keegan, all named All-Stars with other teams after leaving the Yankees. Clint Courtney would be the 1952 A.L. Rookie of the Year runner-up after the Yankees traded him to the Browns, and Bill Virdon was the 1955 N.L. Rookie of the Year with the Cardinals (and then Yankee manager from 1974 to 1975!).
But the most talented player who just couldn't find the playing time in New York was Jack Eugene Jensen, born March 9, 1927, in San Francisco. His parents divorced when he was 5, and he grew up poor, his mother working six days a week, 12 hours a day. Jensen said the family moved 16 times between kindergarten and eighth grade -- "every time the rent came due."
After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Jensen went to the University of California in 1946 on the G.I. Bill. There he became one of the most famous college players in the country, leading Cal to the Rose Bowl. In 1947, he was the starting fullback as well as the team's top defensive back, and in 1948, he rushed for 1,000 yards and was an All-American.
He also was a tremendous two-way baseball player, pitching and hitting for the Golden Bears in 1947 as the won the very first College World Series, beating a Yale team that had George H.W. Bush playing first base. In 1949, he was an All-American in baseball, too.
His blond hair, good looks, and athletic accomplishments earned him the nickname "The Golden Boy."
Halfway through his junior year, Jensen left Berkeley to turn pro. Jensen would later say he couldn't risk playing a career-ending injury playing for free while teams -- baseball and football -- were trying to sign him to big-money contracts.
"There was a money tree growing in my backyard. Why shouldn't I pluck off the dollars when I wanted to?"
Jensen considered a number of offers, including from the Yankees, before signing a three-year, $75,000 contract with the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League. Jensen said he thought he'd face better competition in the Pacific Coast League, the top minor league of the era, than he would at the bottom of the Yankee farm system. He was right about it being more of a challenge -- he hit an unimpressive .261/.317/.394 in 510 plate appearances with the Oaks.
At the end of the year, the Oaks sold his contract (and that of Billy Martin, another Northern California kid) to the Yankees.
That same year, Jensen married his high school sweetheart, Zoe Ann Olsen, an Olympic diver. (By age 18, she had won 14 national diving championships and a silver medal in the 1948 Olympics.) "Together they looked like a Nordic god and goddess," Sports Illustrated reported. Nicknamed "the sweethearts of sports," they were the Dansby Swanson and Mallory Pugh of their era. More than 1,000 people attended their wedding.
Jensen would start the 1950 season not in the minors but in the Bronx. He joined the Yankees in a time of flux. They though they'd won the 1949 World Series, the Yankees knew they had to make some changes, with 35-year-old Joe DiMaggio nearing the end of his career. And their heir apparent was not Mickey Mantle -- at the time an 18-year-old shortstop playing in the Class C league, the equivalent of A-ball today -- but the 23-year-old Jensen.
But Jensen disappointed, hitting just .171/.247/.300 in 70 at-bats, and only starting in 13 games. Watching from the bench most of the season, Jensen would later lament the lost year of development, saying he'd have been better off playing every day in the Pacific Coast League.
The Yankees won the pennant for a second straight year, and in the World Series he once again was left on the bench. His only action was as a pinch runner in Game 3 as the Yankees swept the Phillies. That "Moonlight Graham" appearance would be his only taste of the post-season in an 11-year career.
The following year would be DiMaggio's last, and Mantle's first. Jensen began the year as the Yankees' starting left fielder and proved he belonged, hitting .296/.371/.509 through the end of July... and then, shockingly, was demoted to Triple-A and replaced with previously forgotten Yankee Bob Cerv.
I can see why they called up Cerv -- the University of Nebraska stand-out was tearing up Triple-A, leading the American Association in batting average (.349), home runs (26), triples (21), RBIs (101), and total bases (261) -- but why demote Jensen, who had a 140 OPS+ in the majors? Maybe the Yankees felt the brash 23-year-old needed to be taken down a peg. In any event, Cerv hit just .214/.333/.250 in August and was sent back to Triple-A, but Jensen also was left down there. He hit .263/.344/.469 and was recalled after the Triple-A season ended, only getting into three games (he went 3-for-9).
Mantle, too, had started the season with the Yankees, and after hitting .260/.341/.423 through the middle of July, was sent down to Triple-A. But he hit .361/.445/.651 in 166 at-bats, and unlike Jensen was back in the bigs by August 24. He would play pretty much every game the rest of the season, hitting .284/.370/.495 in 95 at-bats.
The torch had clearly been passed -- Jensen was no longer the heir apparent to DiMaggio. In the World Series that year, Mantle was the starting right fielder, and Jensen wasn't even on the post-season roster.
Jensen was so disappointed with how the Yankees had treated him in 1951 that he talked to the San Francisco 49ers about switching to pro football, but ultimately decided to stick with baseball.
Never shy about what he said to reporters, Jensen told The Sporting News on October 24, 1951:
"I felt so badly about the treatment that I received from the Yankees that, although I was in New York at the end of the season, I didn't feel like sticking around to even watch the club play in any of the World's Series games."
"I do not feel the Yankees were justified in sending me to the minor leagues. When I was shipped to Kansas City, I was doing as good a job as any Yankee outfielder and better than some of them. I was hitting .296, which was ten points better than Hank Bauer and 30 points better than Joe DiMaggio, Gene Woodling and Mickey Mantle. Yet Casey Stengel didn't give me the chance I felt I deserved."
Despite blasting his manager in the press, Jensen was still the property of the Yankees. That off-season, teams were circling, hoping to pry away the talented but disgruntled outfielder. There were newspaper reports of offers from the St. Louis Browns, the Detroit Tigers, the Philadelphia Athletics, the Washington Senators, the Cleveland Indians, and the Boston Red Sox -- with one rumor being Ted Williams to the Bronx in exchange for Jensen and several other players. (A Red Sox scout called the rumored deal "a lot of hogwash.")
Sportswriters spent the off-season speculating whether DiMaggio would retire, and if he did, whether Jensen or Mantle would take over as the center fielder, as there were still concerns that Mantle, who had hurt his knee in the 1951 World Series, wouldn't be fully recovered by the start of the season.
On Opening Day, April 16, 1952, it was Jackie Jensen in center and Mickey Mantle in right. Jensen went 0-for-5 with a GIDP; Mantle, 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a stolen base! Seven games into the season, Jensen was 2-for-17 (.118) and found himself on the bench. He'd never play for the Yankees again. On May 3, the Golden Boy was traded to the Washington Senators along with Spec Shea, Jerry Snyder, and Archie Wilson in exchange for Irv Noren and Tom Upton.
In two years with the Senators, Jensen hit an impressive .276/.359/.407 (112 OPS+), but the team was terrible, and Jensen wasn't happy. Still just 26 years old, he later said he had almost quit after the 1953 season... particularly after a harrowing flight to Japan for a series of exhibition games with a squad of All-Stars that included Yankees Yogi Berra, Eddie Lopat, and Billy Martin. That experience gave Jensen a lifelong fear of flying, a phobia that became so intense eventually he could only fly with the help of sleeping pills... and a hypnotist!
He might have quit if not for the trade on December 9, 1953, that sent him to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Mickey McDermott and outfielder Tom Umphlett. He was homesick, he hated flying, and he now had two little kids at home. Red Sox general manager Joe Cronin convinced Jensen to come to the Red Sox, telling him that Fenway Park was tailor made for his swing. Cronin was right: Jensen was a career .279/.369/.460 hitter, but .298/.400/.514 at Fenway.
It was in Boston that Jensen finally lived up to the hype, becoming a two-time All-Star and winning the A.L. MVP Award in 1958 and a Gold Glove in 1959. During his seven seasons in Boston, he hit .282/.374/.478 in 4,519 plate appearances. In his MVP season, Jensen hit .286/.396/.535 (148 OPS+) with 31 doubles, 35 home runs, and a league-leading 122 RBIs. During his peak with the Red Sox, 1954 to 1959, Jensen's average season was .285/.378/.490 (127 OPS+) with 28 doubles, 26 home runs, 111 RBIs, 14 stolen bases, and 3.6 bWAR. During those six seasons, no one in the American League -- not Mickey Mantle, not Ted Williams, not Al Kaline -- had more runs batted in than Jackie Jensen.
Of course, Mantle was the far better player -- even in Jensen's MVP season, Mantle had more runs, hits, home runs, walks, and a 188 OPS+ -- but Jensen's 127 OPS+ between 1954 and 1959 would have been an upgrade over the aging Hank Bauer's 110 OPS+ in right or the left field merry-go-round of Norm Siebern (113 OPS+), Irv Noren (107 OPS+), Enos Slaughter (103 OPS+), and previously forgotten Yankee Hector Lopez (101 OPS+). Casey Stengel would later say the Jensen trade was the worst one the Yankees had made while he was manager.
Despite his success, Jensen was sometimes booed by the Boston fans, just as they sometimes booed Ted Williams. There even was an article in Sport magazine, "What Do They Want From Jackie Jensen?", taking Red Sox fans to task for their unreasonably high demands from the Golden Boy. In 1956, in a game at Fenway Park against the Yankees, the hometown fans were razzing Jensen so much that teammates had to restrain him from going into the stands after a fan. Later that same game, Williams misplayed a wind-blown fly ball from Mantle, and the fans booed lustily. The very next play, Williams made a leaping catch at the scoreboard to rob Yogi Berra of a double. But Williams, still furious, spit into the crowd. He was later fined $5,000.
And Jackie was unhappy to be away from home. He and Zoe Ann had bought a house near Lake Tahoe, where they could both ski and golf year-round, as well as hit the casinos. They also had a home in Oakland, and a restaurant there, and each year Jensen hosted a pro-am golf tournament. But the marriage was struggling. Zoe Ann, once nationally known for her Olympic exploits, was frustrated to be a stay-at-home mom in the shadow of her famous husband, and Jackie became angry if she engaged in her favorite outdoor hobbies, suspecting there were men around.
Jensen's fear of flying also had become even more intense. Sometimes he was so drugged up that he had to be carried on and off the plane, fueling rumors that he was a drunk. Other times he took trains or even drove while his teammates flew.
Once again Jensen was talking about retirement, and in Spring Training 1957, the Red Sox allowed him to train with the San Francisco Seals, Boston's Triple-A team, rather than having to go to Florida. But he was still miserable. That year, he told Sports Illustrated:
“In baseball you get to the point where you don’t think you have a family. It just looks like I’m not built for this life like some ballplayers. You are always away from home and you’re lonesome, and as soon as I can, I intend to get out.”
The 32-year-old Jensen announced his retirement after the 1959 season, and he spent 1960 home with Zoe Ann and their children and running his restaurant. But he returned in 1961. After hitting just .130 in April, Jensen took a train from Detroit home to Reno, determined to quit once again. After a week away, he rejoined the team and had six hits in his next 10 at-bats. By the end of the season he was at .263/.350/.392, and he quit again. This time for good.
After leaving baseball, Jensen invested in real estate and a golf course, but lost most of his money. He then got a job working for a Lake Tahoe casino, was a national spokesman for Camel cigarettes, Wonder Bread, and Gillette, and even tried selling cars. Ironically, Jackie found himself on the road almost as much as he had been as a ballplayer. In 1963, he and Zoe Ann divorced, remarried, and then divorced again.
In 1967, Jensen became a TV sportscaster, married his producer Katharine Cortesi, and eventually teamed up with Keith Jackson calling college football games for ABC, and was a college baseball coach, first at the University of Nevada-Reno and then at the University of California. He managed the Red Sox team in the New York Penn League in 1970. In 1977, Jackie and Katharine moved to Virginia and started a Christmas tree farm while he coached baseball at a military academy. About five years later, on July 14, 1982, he died of a heart attack at age 55.
You Don't Know Jack(ie):
In 1958, Jensen told Sports Illustrated that the biggest thrill of his career wasn't being an All-American or an All-Star, it wasn't winning an MVP or a World Series. "The biggest is having played in the same outfield with both DiMaggio and Williams."

2023.06.01 04:09 michaelsimpsonjr Lifelong Cedar Point goer, every summer since age 5...my NEW ride Rankings...you agree?

I gotta say, I just rented an Airbnb for my family "mom and stepmom and little brother from Michigan, Sister and her husband and my Neice and Nephew from Georgia, and Sister from Florida and Brother and his wife from Florida, me and my girlfriend" for 4 days, Thursday - Monday for the holiday weekend...It was excellent as always. Sadly, my first time since the pandemic era so it was great to be back.
My ranking has changed a bit now that I'm back here in Los Angeles. So without further adieu, here it is:
  1. Maverick
  2. Steel Vengeance
  3. Millennium Force
  4. Raptor
  5. Gatekeeper
  6. Magnum XL200
  7. Wild Mouse
  8. Valravyn
  9. Blue Streak
  10. Gemini
  11. Rougaru
  12. Iron Dragon
  13. CC Mine Ride
I'm gonna stop right there since Woodstock Express, Wilderness Run, and Pipe Scream are children's rides.
So my list surprised me. Last time I was there was 2018, and my list looked like this:
  1. Steel Vengeance
  2. Maverick
  3. Raptor
  4. Top Thrill Dragster
  5. Gatekeeper
  6. Millennium Force
  7. Valravyn
  8. Magnum XL200
  9. Gemini
  10. Blue Streak
  11. Rougaru
  12. Iron Dragon
  13. CC Mine Ride
Which has led me to a couple of conclusions.
  1. Something new really does make a difference. - I absolutely adore STeVe. It is an incredible ride and one of my favs in the world...however, with the newness worn off, I realize that Maverick simply blew me away all over again as if it was my first time riding it. I really thought Maverick would move down my list actually with Velocicoaster in the picture on my domestic list.
  2. Great storylines absolutely magnify the experience. - Maverick is about trying to tame a wild mustang that you find and that's why right when you hop on it, "the station" it immediately starts running and tries to buck you off "the 95 degree drop". Then, it literally tries to get rid of you the entire time LOL. It's an incredible ride. My only complaint of it and still my only complaint as a 6'3" man, is they should put a 1 inch cushion on that hard plastic because it still crushes my balls horribly lol. But man, it just hurts so good lololol. With STeVe, it's got a cool story, but the reality is the better story would've been the ride is basically trying to drag you to hell...because that's what it feels like, the exact opposite of Maverick trying to get rid of you, that thing wants to drag you through all of your nightmares lol. Amazing ride with so-so theming.
  3. Raptor is absolutely the best inverted B&M in America. There's simply no doubt about it. I've been on all the North American inverts and Raptor is just a monster. It's intense as hell and that first drop is EXTREMELY unique. I don't know if people catch the subtle "locking in to place" that happens on the first drop but it doesn't just turn left and drop, it turns left dramatically and then right a bit and then left ever so slightly before locking into the drop...it genuinely feels like a bird flying and again, the theming and story being followed by the ride matters. Incredible.
  4. TTD fell of the list for obvious reasons, but something tells me it will be a top 5 again and depending on how much new coaster Intamin is adding to it, it could very well end up top 3.
  5. The beauty of Gatekeeper will never change. There's nothing more majestic than the clean and dead gorgeous shine of 2 shades of blue with the sun reflecting so brightly off of it at the front of the park, with such a flowing and gorgeous layout. The ride isn't powerful, or scary, or anything at all. You are jumping on the back of a dragon and gliding around the front of the park and it's just so smooth and beautiful.
  6. Sometimes power simply wins. - Millennium Force moved up my list again. I couldn't figure out why...then I realized it. Last time I was there, I got one ride on it and it was in the front row. It felt slower and the drop didn't feel all that thrilling. This time, I was in the back...and HOLY COW. The way that thing rips you over the top and just floors it is unmatched in the park. It feels incredible and it's such a long drop. And the way it keeps that same energy through it's layout...it feels amazing WHIPPING through that overbooked turn with all that speed coming out of the first drop. Just powerful, fast, and fun. The layout could do more, but that's not what this ride was about when it opened, and to be the first 300+ ft coaster in the world, it did what it was supposed to do, and did so majestically.
  7. Magnum XL200 - Nostalgia is truly a trip. Magnum is another ride, like Gatekeeper, that just defines the skyline on the backside of the park. That majestic red/orange with the sunlight beaming off of it will never really be topped. Going over the waterpark and gliding violently on the edge of the park is a super fun "and painful" ride! And that pain comes from Magnum being one of the final coasters in the world to be built WITHOUT the help of computer precision...gives it that rough edge, which has become a part of it's character.
  8. Something small can still be something insane. - Wild Mouse...wow. You just never know what you're going to get on this one. I was heartbroken when they tore down Wicked Twister...but knowing they're adding a spike probably added to their decision...and I have to admit, Wild Mouse is a fantastic replacement here. It looks absolutely gorgeous on the new boardwalk, as does the entire boardwalk for that matter, and the ride itself...I got 7 rides on it and not a single one was the same...it was so damn fun though every time and the times when it started spinning violently out of control were downright terrifying! Great ride, for newbies and veterans alike.
  9. Valravyn - The theming on Valravyn is simply perfect, and it's such a chill ride outside of that monster of a first drop...let alone a drop coaster with elements that aren't typically found on this genre of coaster...sudden turns, airtime hills...just a great layout and perfect placement in the park.
  10. Blue Streak and Gemini have the same thing going for them as Magnum and even Raptor to a degree...nostalgia. As a child, Blue Streak and Gemini were two of my first coasters when I was 6 years old, and they both ride just as well as they did back then in the 80's. Blue Streak has been SO WELL TAKEN CARE OF...it is a ridiculously beautiful ride and doesn't look at all like the oldest ride in the park, and doesn't ride like it either. Tons of airtime and just a fantastic throwback for people who haven't experienced or miss the simplicity of traditional out and back coasters.
  11. Gemini is exactly the same for me...there was a ride in front of it my sister and I loved doing right after it called the Witches Wheel...curious how many of y'all remember that :P But anyway, the idea of racing with people is so damn fun and clapping hands with the people on the other train will never not be extremely fun. No real thrills or tickles or anything at all about it...but just pure childish fun. The kind of ride a kid remembers for the rest of his life just for the fun they had.
  12. Rougaru is admittedly FAR BETTER of a ride than Mantis was and I always said they should put the flourless trains on that track and it rides great. I won't go over CC Mine Ride and Iron Dragon, but I will say this about Rougaru which is bottom of my list basically...Rougaru could be the best ride in ALOT of parks, and it's the bottom of my list at Cedar Point. CP is a hell of a park, and has been almost every summer of my entire life. No place like it.
What are your lists? Also, for those wondering, here's my top 10 for ALL domestic coasters I've been on in America:
  1. Maverick - CP
  2. Velocicoaster - USO
  3. Steel Vengeance - CP
  4. Guardians of the Galaxy - WDW Epcot
  5. Hagrids Motorbikes - USO
  6. Millennium Force - CP
  7. The Voyage - HW
  8. Arie Force One - FSG
  9. lightning Rod (interchangeable with AFO depending on how it's riding)
  10. Iron Gwazi - BGT

Their story, and governance truly based on the consent of the governed, contains a great deal of life-promoting intelligence for those of us not familiar with this area of American history.
The historic „two-row” wampum belt commemorates early treaties between the Iroquois and white men.
The two rows symbolize two vessels traveling down the same river : a canoe and a ship, representing Indians and whites. They travel side by side, neither interfering with the other.

„ In our canoe we have all our laws, culture, and beliefs and in your vessel you shall have all your laws, culture, and beliefs, traveling side by side through life as equals never enforcing or interfering in each others affairs as long as the sun shall shine the grass shall grow and the rivers shall flow this will be everlasting . „

Only one fearsome Onondaga stood in their way : the original Tadodaho – a wizard with snakes in his hair who was ultimately won over by Hiawatha and the Peacemaker.
The native American Prophet the Peacemaker planted the Tree of Peace ( a magnificent white pine ) on Onondaga Lake’s shore and gave the Haudenosaunee the Great Law of Peace that would later serve as basis for American Democracy.
It is where democracy was born.
The Five Nations buried their weapons of war.
The Iroquois Tree of Peace finds its roots in a man named, Dekanavidah, the peace giver.
Four long roots, called the „ white roots of peace „ , streched out from the tree in the four sacred directions.

The speech ( above ) expressed the hope that the new Americans and the Iroquois act
„ as one people , and have but one heart „ .

The Fire Leggings

The Fire Leggings
There had been a sudden change in the weather.
A cold rain was falling, and the night comes early when the clouds hang low.
The children loved a bright fire, and tonight War Eagle's lodge was light as day.
Away off on the plains a wolf was howling, and the rain pattered upon the lodge as though it never intended to quit.
It was a splendid night for storytelling, and War Eagle filled and lighted the great stone pipe, while the children made themselves comfortable about the fire.

A spark sprang from the burning sticks, and fell upon Fine Bow's bare leg.
They all laughed heartily at the boy's antics to rid himself of the burning coal; and as soon as the laughing ceased War Eagle laid aside the pipe.
An Indian's pipe is large to look at, but holds little tobacco.

"See your shadows on the lodge wall?" asked the old warrior.
The children said they saw them, and he continued:

"Some day I will tell you a story about them, and how they drew the arrows of our enemies, but tonight I am going to tell you of the great fire-leggings.

"It was long before there were men and women on the world, but my grandfather told me what I shall now tell you.
"The gray light that hides the night stars was creeping through the forests, and the wind the Sun sends to warn the people of his coming was among the fir tops.
Flowers, on slender stems, bent their heads out of respect for the herald wind's Master, and from the dead top of a pinetree the Yellowhammer beat upon his drum and called 'the Sun is awake - all hail the Sun!'
"Then the bush birds began to sing the song of the morning, and from alders the Robins joined, until all live things were awakened by the great music.
Where the tall ferns grew, the Doe waked her Fawns, and taught them to do homage to the Great Light.
In the creeks, where the water was still and clear, and where throughout the day, like a delicate damaskeen, the shadows of leaves that overhang would lie, the Speckled Trout broke the surface of the pool in his gladness of the coming day.
Pine-squirrels chattered gayly, and loudly proclaimed what the wind had told; and all the shadows were preparing for a great journey to the Sand Hills, where the ghost-people dwell.
"Under a great spruce tree - where the ground was soft and dry, OLD-man slept.
The joy that thrilled creation disturbed him not, although the Sun was near.
The bird-people looked at the sleeper in wonder, but the Pine squirrel climbed the great spruce tree with a pinecone in his mouth.
Quickly he ran out on the limb that spread over OLD-man, and dropped the cone on the sleeper's face.
Then he scolded OLD-man, saying: 'Get up - get up - lazy one - lazy one - get up - get up.'
"Rubbing his eyes in anger, OLD-man sat up and saw the Sun coming - his hunting leggings slipping through the thickets - setting them afire, till all the Deer and Elk ran out and sought new places to hide.
"'Ho, Sun!' called OLD-man, 'those are mighty leggings you wear.
No wonder you are a great hunter.
Your leggings set fire to all the thickets, and by the light you can easily see the Deer and Elk; they cannot hide.
Ho! Give them to me and I shall then be the great hunter and never be hungry.'
"'Good,' said the Sun, 'take them, and let me see you wear my leggings.'
"OLD-man was glad in his heart, for he was lazy, and now he thought he could kill the game without much work, and that he could be a great hunter - as great as the Sun.
He put on the leggings and at once began to hunt the thickets, for he was hungry.
Very soon the leggings began to burn his legs.
The faster he travelled the hotter they grew, until in pain he cried out to the Sun to come and take back his leggings; but the Sun would not hear him.
On and on OLD-man ran.
Faster and faster he flew through the country, setting fire to the brush and grass as he passed.
Finally he came to a great river, and jumped in.
Sizzzzzzz - the water said, when OLD-man's legs touched it.
It cried out, as it does when it is sprinkled upon hot stones in the sweat-lodge, for the leggings were very hot.
But standing in the cool water OLD-man took off the leggings and threw them out upon the shore, where the Sun found them later in the day.
"The Sun's clothes were too big for OLD-man, and his work too great.

"We should never ask to do the things which Manitou did not intend us to do.
If we keep this always in mind we shall never get into trouble.
"Be yourselves always.
That is what Mantou intended. Never blame the Wolf for what he does.
He was made to do such things.

2023.06.01 00:23 JoshAsdvgi THE FAITHFUL LOVERS

THE FAITHFUL LOVERS

THE FAITHFUL LOVERS
There once lived a chief's daughter who had many relations.
All the young men in the village wanted to have her for wife, and were all eager to fill her skin bucket when she went to the brook for water.
There was a young man in the village who was industrious and a good hunter; but he was poor and of a mean family.
He loved the maiden and when she went for water, he threw his robe over her head while he whispered in her ear:
"Be my wife.
I have little but I am young and strong.
I will treat you well, for I love you."
For a long time the maiden did not answer, but one day she whispered back.
"Yes, you may ask my father's leave to marry me.
But first you must do something noble.
I belong to a great family and have many relations.
You must go on a war party and bring back the scalp of an enemy."
The young man answered modestly,
"I will try to do as you bid me.
I am only a hunter, not a warrior.
Whether I shall be brave or not I do not know.
But I will try to take a scalp for your sake."
So he made a war party of seven, himself and six other young men.
They wandered through the enemy's country, hoping to get a chance to strike a blow.
But none came, for they found no one of the enemy.
"Our medicine is unfavorable," said their leader at last.
"We shall have to return home."
Before they started they sat down to smoke and rest beside a beautiful lake at the foot of a green knoll that rose from its shore.
The knoll was covered with green grass and somehow as they looked at it they had a feeling that there was something about it that was mysterious or uncanny.
But there was a young man in the party named the jester, for he was venturesome and full of fun.
Gazing at the knoll he said: "Let's run and jump on its top."
"No," said the young lover, "it looks mysterious.
Sit still and finish your smoke."
"Oh, come on, who's afraid," said the jester, laughing.
"Come on you -- come on!" and springing to his feet he ran up the side of the knoll.
Four of the young men followed.
Having reached the top of the knoll all five began to jump and stamp about in sport, calling, "Come on, come on," to the others.
Suddenly they stopped -- the knoll had begun to move toward the water.
It was a gigantic turtle.
The five men cried out in alarm and tried to run -- too late!
Their feet by some power were held fast to the monster's back.
"Help us -- drag us away," they cried; but the others could do nothing.
In a few moments the waves had closed over them.
The other two men, the lover and his friend, went on, but with heavy hearts, for they had forebodings of evil.
After some days, they came to a river.
Worn with fatigue the lover threw himself down on the bank.
"I will sleep awhile," he said, "for I am wearied and worn out."
"And I will go down to the water and see if I can chance upon a dead fish.
At this time of the year the high water may have left one stranded on the sea-shore," said his friend.
And as he had said, he found a fish which he cleaned, and then called to the lover.
"Come and eat the fish with me.
I have cleaned it and made a fire and it is now cooking."
"No, you eat it; let me rest," said the lover.
"Oh, come on."
"No, let me rest."
"But you are my friend.
I will not eat unless you share it with me."
"Very well," said the lover, "I will eat the fish with you, but you must first make me a promise.
If I eat the fish, you must promise, pledge yourself, to fetch me all the water that I can drink."
"I promise," said the other, and the two ate the fish out of their war-kettle.
For there had been but one kettle for the party.
When they had eaten, the kettle was rinsed out and the lover's friend brought it back full of water.
This the lover drank at a draught.
"Bring me more," he said.
Again his friend filled the kettle at the river and again the lover drank it dry.
"More!" he cried.
"Oh, I am tired.
Cannot you go to the river and drink your fill from the stream?" asked his friend.
"Remember your promise."
"Yes, but I am weary. Go now and drink."
"Ek-hey, I feared it would be so.
Now trouble is coming upon us," said the lover sadly.
He walked to the river, sprang in, and lying down in the water with his head toward land, drank greedily.
By and by he called to his friend.
"Come hither, you who have been my sworn friend.
See what comes of your broken promise."
The friend came and was amazed to see that the lover was now a fish from his feet to his middle.
Sick at heart he ran off a little way and threw himself upon the ground in grief.
By and by he returned.
The lover was now a fish to his neck.
"Cannot I cut off the part and restore you by a sweat bath?" the friend asked.
"No, it is too late.
But tell the chief's daughter that I loved her to the last and that I die for her sake.
Take this belt and give it to her.
She gave it to me as a pledge of her love for me," and he being then turned to a great fish, swam to the middle of the river and there remained, only his great fin remaining above the water.
The friend went home and told his story.
There was great mourning over the death of the five young men, and for the lost lover.
In the river the great fish remained, its fin just above the surface, and was called by the Indians "Fish that Bars," because it bar'd navigation.
Canoes had to be portaged at great labor around the obstruction.
The chief's daughter mourned for her lover as for a husband, nor would she be comforted. "He was lost for love of me, and I shall remain as his widow," she wailed.
In her mother's tepee she sat, with her head covered with her robe, silent, working, working. "What is my daughter doing," her mother asked.
But the maiden did not reply.
The days lengthened into moons until a year had passed.
And then the maiden arose.
In her hands were beautiful articles of clothing, enough for three men.
There were three pairs of moccasins, three pairs of leggings, three belts, three shirts, three head dresses with beautiful feathers, and sweet smelling tobacco
"Make a new canoe of bark," she said, which was made for her.
Into the canoe she stepped and floated slowly down the river toward the great fish.
"Come back my daughter," her mother cried in agony.
"Come back. The great fish will eat you."
She answered nothing.
Her canoe came to the place where the great fin arose and stopped, its prow grating on the monster's back.
The maiden stepped out boldly.
One by one she laid her presents on the fish's back, scattering the feathers and tobacco over his broad spine.
"Oh, fish," she cried, "Oh, fish, you who were my lover, I shall not forget you.
Because you were lost for love of me, I shall never marry.
All my life I shall remain a widow.
Take these presents.
And now leave the river, and let the waters run free, so my people may once more descend in their canoes."
She stepped into her canoe and waited.
Slowly the great fish sank, his broad fin disappeared, and the waters of the St. Croix (Stillwater) were free.

2023.05.31 22:24 ___thorne333 Some advice

I post on here a lot ! But I’ll keep it simple in about a month it’ll be me and my partners 1 year anniversary, and before all of this happened, and we were in the best stage of our relationship, we had planned a trip to go to Florida for our one year. We have an Airbnb that we both work to pay for and we have a set date before we can no longer get a refund on it. I believe I love my partner, and I want to be with him, but I’ve been struggling with numbness lack of emotion, and extremely strong breakup urges. I’ve been open with him about this, but he says that he thinks if we go on this trip together then maybe that’ll bring some of the spark back into our relationship. Things haven’t been going good between me and him since then and we’ve been arguing quite a lot and I’m worried that going on this trip might be a mistake . Although I really want to but I don’t wanna put them in a position where he can’t get his money back . Of course even if we did go, and we had a terrible time I would save up and pay him back anyway. I’ve talked with him about canceling the trip and he said that it’s up to me but he really wants to go either way. If you were me, would you cancel the trip or would you take a chance and go and see what it’s like. I’m in a strong stage where I feel very repulsed at the thought of us staying together, that thought is very disturbing for me, but I want to if you have any advice on this I’d be happy to see.
