2023.05.24 20:30 Jackerino- Ikea KARLBY countertop with legs on one side
I want to replace my existing linnmon desktop with a thicker KARLBY top and I currently have one ALEX drawer.
Can I get away with using legs on one side of the countertop and the ALEX drawers on the other? The only heavy think on the desk really will be my PC which I plan on putting directly over the drawers.

2023.05.23 22:12 slavicbhoy Best way to connect a butt joint on Ikea wood countertop
Hoping for some guidance here. I am installing Ikea Karlby countertops in my kitchen and need to make a couple of butt joints. The veneer is 3mm thick over particle board.
Which of the following techniques would be best to use for a butt joint:
- Router out holes for a zip bolt connector.
- Pocket screws.
- Dominoes.
I've never worked with particle board before, but I am assuming option #2 and #3 are out of the question.
Thanks for the help!

2023.05.22 01:17 jesstim111 Karlby oak or walnut countertop for my desk?
I can't choose between the oak or walnut countertop. Every desk accessory I have is the color black and I'm not sure if walnut or oak would fit better.

2023.05.15 11:57 hts2011 Prusa XL - Table / Desk recommendations
While I wait for the 5 toolhead prusa xl I am trying to figure out the best desk / table, etc, for it alongside a prusa MK3S+ & MK4. I haven't really found many desks that are deep / sturdy enough so I was wondering where people are putting theirs, or plan to? I'd prefer to have something premade, rather that do a tonne of construction myself. I can do some limited construction (my dad has a workshop).
So far my front running idea is getting this countertop from ikea, cut it to 3feet in depth then use the extra bit as a shelf. I'd be putting them on concrete pavers on top to help reduce vibrations. Not sure how sturdy this would be in the end. I've been debating bolting it to the wall to reduce shake as well.

I've also toyed with the idea of the above with some kitchen cabinets underneath for storage, etc.
Thanks!

2023.05.15 05:07 Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry Redesigned my setup this weekend (Alex Drawers, Karlby Countertop)
2023.05.10 20:59 megamophsis I want to decorate my office space using Black, White, and Gold colors, without it looking tacky.
I have a small 10x9 office space I'm looking to decorate. Currently the only thing in the office is a desk I bought from IKEA which is the Karlby birch countertop. When I look at examples of other offices with this color scheme a lot of them come off as tacky. I would love a modern and sleek design that is just a tad bit minimalist. I also would like to have hints of birch wood highlighting the room to help blend in my desk a bit. Not sure how possible all this is as I have no decorating experience but I would greatly appreciate any advice or examples others may have.

2023.05.01 20:16 Conscious_Platypus_3 Found an outstanding deal on a deskframe, but it's L shape, where would I get a top for it?
I found
this on Craigslist for $20; but it's an L shape, and I always thought I would get a standard desk frame and pair it with the Ikea Karbly
countertop, but with this setup I don't know. Should I just pass on the frame?

2023.05.01 16:02 jwjody Help with Cable Management
I don't think I need help with only cable management. I'm not sure what all is available. This is what I have under my desk:
https://i.imgur.com/SBaahYp.jpg There are two power strips, a ring hub, hue hub, starling hub, my verizon modem, then the orbi router. I want to get all this put into a cabinet or something. I don't have a closet where I could put it all.
I'm redoing my entire set up and have a Karlby countertop with two Alex shelves on their way. I could probably fit a small cabinet under my desk. Is there a cabinet that would be good for all of this? Preferably with enough outlets to replace both strips.
Maybe a little network switch also? Recommendations for that?
Should I get a surge protector strip and attach it to my desk and put everything else into a cabinet? Or are there surge protectors that can fit into a cabinet?
Thank you!

2023.04.19 02:17 eastcoastelectrician Kitchen island cover panel ideas
Ok so I don’t know who’s mistake it was because our kitchen plans changed so much and we were into the store a lot to meet with the kitchen planner but our kitchen island that was supposed to be 8 foot long is 9 inches too short. Which wouldn’t be a huge issue except that the cover panels they sent will not work. We got the Karlby countertop and the depth is locked in at 25 5/8”. So in order to get the cover panels to fit we have to cut both the sides and the back which in turn won’t allow us to hide the cut edges in a way that will flow with the kitchen.
So we have a couple options:
Scrap the counter top and go with something wider, which I’m assuming I would have to go with laminate or quartz but the down side to that is that the island countertop will be different from the rest.
Keep the countertop and build custom panels from wood and extend the island with a custom piece to get our 8’. The only thing being is that in order to get a flush look we only have about 1” to work with.
This stuff is fairly new to me and I’m not quite sure where to go from here. I’d hate to lose the Karlby countertop as it was our favorite out of all them.
Anyone on here make their own cover panels for a kitchen island?

2023.04.16 06:18 askinpaul23 Karlby + 4 Adils stable?
Looking for a clear answer to this question if possible. I was wondering if the Karlby 74" countertop on 4 Adils in the corners can support a PC and 2 monitors. Is the set up wobbly and would a fifth Adil in the back centre help? Not looking at using an Alex drawer as they're running at $150 CAD and I don't need the drawer space.
Thanks

2023.04.15 03:40 titannnr IKEA countertop?
Hi all,
I am looking to redo my desk setup. Currently I am having a Lagkapten sitting on 2 Olov legs and a horizontal Kallax shelf. I use 2 monitor stands, one holding up my 34in ultrawide (with arm fully extended to max length, hence a lot of torque on the clamp contact point) and one holding up my 27in monitor and my laptop. These stands are both positioned away from the center of the desk because I think it would help with holding those stands up, considering the particle board material of the Lagkapten. Even then, the arm holding up 34in ultrawide still warp the desk severely and it is bowing in the center. And the hold setup is not very sturdy, the desk moves swings slightly when I touch it.
So I am thinking about switching to a Karlby or some other kitchen countertop from IKEA. My questions are:
- Will the Karlby and 3mm thick veneer be able to do better than Lagkapten in holding up my monitor stands?
- Will I be better off buying a countertop elsewhere, potentially fully wood, for example, from Home Depot?
- Will resting the countertop on 2 Alexes and a leg in the center be more stable than on 4 legs and a leg in the center? If Alexes are the way to go, I really want to secure the countertop onto the Alexes, how should I go about it? Will wood screws work?
- I saw in the spec that Karlby has top veneer and just laminate at the bottom. Will I be able to run screws into the bottom then when it is just laminate and particle board behind that? Will it hold?
Totally unrelated but I also have a thunderbolt 4 dock from kensington and was wondering if there is any good set of speakers out there that will work well with these TB4 docks? I am using a pair of Pebble V3 over USB-C and for some reason it keeps disconnecting itself for a few second and then reconnecting (especially on Windows 11)... Or should I just get a audio interface?
Thank you all for any help!

2023.04.03 02:44 _suicide What screws should I use? KARLBY Countertop Gaming Desk
Hey everyone,
I just bought 2 KARLBY counter-tops (74x1 1/2) that I'm turning into an L-Shaped desk.
I'm going to connect the tops with 5 of the 10" Mending Plate from Home Depot, but for the life of me I cannot find what screws I should use to put these things together.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-10-in-Zinc-Plated-Mending-Plate-6-Pack-12374/315016090 Here is a picture of the what I'm planning to do:
https://imgur.com/a/LZb01as Can someone please recommend me some screws I can use for this? Not sure if they should be 1inch screws, or 3/4th... etc. If someone could link me that would be awesome.
Also, I saw a post where someone said I should "pre-drill" the holes before screwing these screws in, how exactly would I go about doing something like that? I'm a rookie :)
Thanks everyone.

2023.04.01 09:03 zapperzipper Need help preventing bowing on countertop being used as a table
I haven’t gotten the countertop yet but plan to, after a little more research. Originally I was going to get a Karlby countertop however I hear lots of stories that they are prone to bowing when you have longer counters placed onto the alyx drawers, and the only way to prevent it is to install support in the center. My question is if I decide to instead order a real solid wood butcher block countertop instead of the karlby (because I’ve always wanted a solid piece of furniture), will that heavy solid piece of wood measuring 98” still bow like the karlby? Do I still add support in the center?

2023.03.19 17:10 giubaloo Recommendations for large wood desktop
I’ll be upgrading my desk soon and am looking for a large wooden desktop (laminate or solid wood) roughly 72” x 30”. The
Karlby countertop from IKEA is an extremely common choice but if it’s realistic I’d be very curious to look into local wood suppliers that would potentially be able to come up with something similar. As long as it’s cut to size I’d be able to sand and finish it, though depending on the price I’d potentially consider paying to have that done too.
If anyone has any tips or suggestions, locally or otherwise, for a nice desktop I’d appreciate it!

2023.03.17 07:38 dreamchains IKEA Karlby desk alternative that DOESN'T require sanding/staining/finishing/etc.?
Not trying to sound picky but just looking for a more budget friendly alternative to the classic reddit
Karlby desk. I've found countless reddit posts suggesting butcher blocks, but they all require some sort of prep work that I don't have the tools or experience for.
I'm just looking for something minimal with a similar rustic wood color, at least 5, preferably 6' wide and 25" deep. Live edges are cool too but probably too expensive. I'd like to stay under $200 if possible.
And yes I'm gonna put them on alex drawers lol

2023.03.15 22:35 thisisaidss Adding Adils legs to countertop
Now I'm planning on adding 2 adils legs to one side of my counter top . I was able to buy a solid wood countertop for £40 at a local store to substitute a expensive Karlby desktop . Now I'm just wondering how I would screw the legs to the countertop . Can I screw them directly into the desk with a electric screwdriver or should I drill holes first then screw ?

2023.03.08 17:19 Sharp_Anxiety5085 KARLBY Countertop, walnut/veener as a WFH desk. Seal or not?
Hi All! Planning to use KARLBY Countertop, walnut/veneer as a table top for my WFH/Personal computer set up. I was wondering if I have to do any additional sealing or anything like that after I purchase it. If so, what products should I use?
Don't do much eating at my desk but usually have a drink or two on my desk to sip on during my work/study time. I spend a lot of time at my desk and have have a lot of things on it like, speakers, knick knacks etc but again, I do spend a lot of time at my desk so it is being used frequently. Any advice would be helpful!
