Return to home-away format: A rebalancing act for IPL teams Cricbuzz
If the last season represented a new start for all of the teams in the IPL, then so does this one. While the 2022 edition took place after the hard reset of a mega auction, leaving the 10 franchises to assess the balance and depth of their squads, 2023 will be much the same as the tournament returns to a home-and-away format for the first time in three years.
This will be a game changer for all of the teams, who picked entirely new combinations ahead of last year's tournament but then saw the group stages take place at just three venues across Maharashtra. How will they fare now that they will be playing a large portion of their games on home territory, as well as travelling to a wider range of away venues? In assessing who might benefit from this change, let's take a look at four pivotal teams.
We will start with the two fan favourites - Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians - who finished at the foot of the table last season, and see if the switch in format might assist a revival. Then we will look at two teams who have performed well and appear to still have the team combinations to thrive in switch in format might assist a revival. Chennai Super Kings
​
A crucial factor is that CSK have always been a difficult team to beat at home, winning 39 of their 55 matches at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium for a win rate of 70.91%. Now that they are returning, can they make it their fortress once again with their current resources?
CSK finished ninth in the table last year, managing just four wins out of 14 matches and only avoiding the wooden spoon on net run rate. Since then they have hired the services of Ben Stokes for a whopping price, the experienced Ajinkya Rahane and Sisanda Magala (after original signing Kyle Jamieson was ruled out with injury).
It's fair to say there will not be much change to their overall balance, since one can assume that Stokes will replace the seasoned matchwinner Dwayne Bravo - although they do play different roles, as Bravo was a bowling allrounder and Stokes is a batting allrounder. Rahane comes in for the retired Robin Uthappa, but is likely to serve as a back-up batsman given that he is an opener and CSK already have the seasoned pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway up top.

The combination mentioned above is likely to feature in most of their matches, particularly at their home venue where they will go with a spin-heavy bowling attack. CSK's success right from 2008 has been their opening pair: Mike Hussey/Murali Vijay, Brendon McCullum/Dwayne Smith, Ruturaj/Faf du Plessis. These combinations have set the tone early on, providing consistency for their top and middle order to take the innings further. The table below shows the impact that opening pairs have made upon their successful campaigns.

In 2022, they started the first game against KKR with Conway/Ruturaj but surprisingly changed the combination to Ruturaj/Uthappa for the very next game. This backfired badly as the pair went on to average just 12.75 at a low SR of 102. When they went back to Conway/Ruturaj, the pair ended up making 359 runs at an average of 51.2 with a SR of 149. Unfortunately for CSK, none of their top and middle order were consistent through the tournament.
Conway was the only batter to average more than 40 (he averaged 42 at a SR of 145.66) yet he played only seven matches. This highlights the importance of the New Zealander to CSK's batting on home turf, but also represents a dilemma. The decision to sign Magala suggests that they are aware of the weakness in the death bowling department and saw the need to improve it. But how can they bring the South African into the side when Stokes and Moeen Ali are shoo-ins as allrounders, an overseas spinner will be handy at Chepauk and Conway is needed at the top of the order?
This will be the main puzzle for them to figure out. The good news is the return of Deepak Chahar, but overall they look as though they will rely heavily on Stokes' performances to reach the playoffs. Crucial to this may be Stokes' record against spin. In the last 500 deliveries that he has faced against spinners in T20 cricket, he averages 31.13 with a reasonably good SR of 134. This will be a big boost for CSK considering the slow wickets in Chennai.
Mumbai Indians

Five-time champions MI ended up with the wooden spoon last year, also recording four wins out of 14 matches. Nothing worked in their favour - except the emergence of young Indian batter Tilak Verma. MI's blueprint through their successful years was two overseas frontline seamers, one overseas finisher and one overseas opening batter. They changed this last year and paid a heavy price, searching for the right combination through the tournament without ever finding it. Of the 10 teams in the IPL, Mumbai will experience the least change in conditions this season given that they played four league matches at the Wankhede in 2022.
This suggests change in personnel will be as important to a revival for them. They broke the bank for Australian allrounder Cameron Green, and also brought in South African left-arm seamer Duan Jansen and experienced leggie Piyush Chawla, along with some domestic recruits. Jasprit Bumrah's injury will be a massive blow for MI to deal with. And with Jhye Richardon also been ruled out, there's plenty of work to be done to get their core combination right. The good news is that Jofra Archer is back and actively playing, but he is also someone known for his injuries.
On top of that, the MI spin department does not look threatening. So if Archer breaks down in the middle of the tournament, they will have to rely on their batting to bail them out on a high scoring Wankhede pitch.

This is the best balance they can think of, but they will have lots of headaches as far as the bowling unit is concerned - particularly on the batting-friendly pitches of their home ground.
In the last five years of the IPL, the 55 matches played at the Wankhede have produced an average score of 171, which is relatively high. Unfortunately they don't have a proven Indian seamer to replace Bumrah, and also lack a wicket-taking spinner in the middle overs.
If their seamers don't start well in the powerplay, they will likely end up conceding big scores. Archer also looked short of his dangerous best on his return in the SA20 league, taking 10 wickets with an Economy of 7.73, while Behrendorff's last IPL appearance was in 2019. The left-armer's stats read 165 runs in 19 overs with an ECO of 8.68, and 5 wickets at a SR of 22.8, which doesn't look highly encouraging.
Cameron Green, on the other hand, averages 16.33 at a SR of 137.64 with the bat, and an ECO of 9.04 with the ball at a SR of 26.40 in his relatively short T20 career. Ramandeep Singh is new to this league with only a few games under his belt, and Arshad Khan will make his debut for everyone to see if he can live up to the hype created by the media. Switching to the spin department, Kumar Karthikeya played just four games last season taking 5 wickets, and Shokeen played five games for 2 wickets.
Another option is Chawla, who went unsold last year and had low returns in IPL 2020, with his 21 overs going for 191 runs at a high ECO of 9.09 and yielding just 6 wickets. He played a solitary game in 2021. The average ECO for spin bowlers at the Wankhede since IPL 2008 is 7.5 - a low figure for a high-scoring venue, showing that spinners play a key role in owning the middle overs. This suggests that Mumbai will have a huge problem.
Going through their batting, Rohit Sharma hasn't averaged 30 in the last six seasons; Ishan Kishan had a middling outing last year with 418 runs at an average of 32.15 and a SR of 120; Tim David is highly skilled but remains an unproven commodity in the IPL, and allrounders Ramandeep Singh and Arshad Khan are both inexperienced.
Similar to CSK, only one batter, Suryakumar Yadav (Avg: 43.28 and SR: 145.67), managed to average more than 40 last season. Young Tilak Verma showed lot of promise with 397 runs at 36.09 with a SR of 131, but MI genuinely look weak on paper - particularly if their top three fail. With a struggle to find a combination to fill up the holes in both batting and bowling, MI might well have another tough year.

Rajasthan Royals
​
The 2008 winner and last year's finalist, Royals certainly look well balanced in all departments - particularly considering their home venue of Jaipur. Prasidh Krishna's absence for the season is a concern for them while Obed McCoy will miss at least the first few games, but they have good reserve options and should be the team to beat in the tournament.
They retained most of their core players and added the seasoned allrounder Jason Holder, who will play a major role for them batting at No 7 and bowling four overs. They also brought in the services of Joe Root, but will find it difficult to fit him into the combination, while hard-hitting Donovon Ferreira will be the back-up plan for Shimron Hetymer.
Adam Zampa might also struggle to get a game considering the success of the spin pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal last year. Wicketkeeper-batter Kunal Rathore, seamer KM Asif, leggie M. Ashwin, allrounder Akash Vashist and seamer Abdul are the local new signings, ensuring that they literally have back up for every position in the core playing XI.

In the last two years of IPL (2018 & 2019) in Jaipur, spinners have an ECO of 7.49 with a SR of 22. Royals have the best spin bowling combination - in terms of both experience and skill - with Ashwin and Chahal. Both were impressive last year, with Ashwin taking 12 wickets with an ECO of 7.50, and Chahal claiming 27 wickets at an ECO of 7.75. Another key factor in Jaipur is the powerplay, where teams on average score 50/1.
The Royals have Trent Boult to counter that problem - in the last three IPL seasons, he has taken 18 wickets in the powerplay and conceded just 7.91 per over. New recruit Holder is also effective in this period - since Jan 2019 he has an ECO of 7.51 in the powerplay with a reasonable SR of 19. This will be a good combination to have along with the pacy and talented Kuldeep Sen. Ashwin and Chahal together in the middle overs will be a challenge to contend for any good batsmen.
The Royals' weakness is their death overs bowling, which they will have to plan carefully. Holder since Jan 2019 has a high ECO of 10.57 in the death overs, while Boult has an ECO of 10.94. If they can sort out their death over problems, this bowling unit will dominate.

The Performance Index in Jaipur for a successful batting unit is 155 (Avg + SR), and if you see the stats for all the Royals frontline batters in last year's IPL, everyone except Padikkal (but including Ashwin) has matched that comfortably. So they have a really consistent and balanced batting line up to get scores between 180 and 190, which could be defended by a bowling line up with three reliable performers in Boult, Chahal and Ashwin.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Having made it to the playoffs in the last three years, RCB have been consistent apart from winning the trophy. Yet it's worth noting that those three seasons have all been played away from their home ground, where the pitch often renders matches into a bat-vs-bat contest.
Do they have the resources to maintain their good recent record now that they will be playing at the Chinnaswamy again? They have maintained almost the same core to their team, but with a few interesting additions in the auction. The new players are more about having a strong bench, with Reece Topley providing back-up for Josh Hazlewood, and Michael Bracewell warming the bench for Wanindu Hasaranga.

The above combination looks a well-oiled machine, with all bases covered - be it batting depth until No 8 or variety in the bowling, where they have two quick bowlers in Siraj and Hazlewood, Harshal Patel with his variations and wicket[1]taking ability, frontline spin options of Hasaranga and Shahbaz and also the part-time but effective off spin of Glenn Maxwell.
The average score at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in its last two years of hosting IPL matches (2018 & 2019) is a massive 185/6. Generally it needs two batsmen to bat 70 balls together to post a high score, which has been the trend in Bangalore right from the first IPL in 2008. The most important thing is to have three bowlers in your line up who can provide regular breakthroughs.

The above table from last year's IPL makes for a positive reading if you are a RCB fan. Three bowlers - Hasaranga, Harshal Patel and Hazlewood - were amongst gthe wickets, suggesting they have what it takes to keep batsmen honest at the Chinnaswamy. It's worth noting that they picked up an impressive tally of 65 wickets between them.
The question will be how much those figures mean when the bowlers find themselves back in the unforgiving conditions of the Chinnaswamy. Siraj was off-colour last season and has conceded at an ER of 10.1 in Bangalore, so will his recent performances with India lift his confidence sufficiently to have a better IPL?

The batting table from last season again looks positive when you consider a Performance Index criteria of 160 in Bangalore. Patidar, Karthik, Du Plessis, Maxwell and Lomror meet the criteria and only Kohli misses out. But Kohli has been a transformed man of late, regaining form and consistency since the last IPL in all formats. The main issue to address in the batting is the top three batters' SR in the powerplay. Last year, Faf's SR facing 173 balls was 119, Kohli's SR facing 116 balls was 106 and Patidar's SR facing 92 balls was 121.
The stats for the last three IPL seasons in Bangalore (2017-2019) show a high reading of 50/1 in the powerplay. This is where they have to change their approach and be a little more aggressive, setting the tone for the middle and lower order - which contains two inexperienced batters in Lomror and Shahbaz Ahmed - to rack up some huge scores. Even though most of their batters in the middle and lower middle order meet the performance criteria, only Karthik has a big average.
So it will be important for the top three to do a lot of the legwork on home soil. If they do so, the playoffs won't be far away for this well balanced team.

2023.03.30 19:27 MCav828 A few predictions and thoughts

So I just finished watching Stranger Things and I wanted to jot down some notes and predictions about the series. Some of this will likely align with what others have already written in the sub, so I won't go so far as to claim that these are all my ideas. More or less, these are ideas that I had a d they may coincide with others. So with that disclaimer, let's go:
  1. I think Steve Harrington is going to be a victim and pass away in the final season. The Duffers have noted that no new characters are being introduced, at least no one extremely consequential. For those that point to the rekindled romance between him and Nancy as a counter, I'd argue that it works in support of my prediction. Nancy and Steve are getting setup for a final reconciliation of feelings, but ultimately it's either too late or Steve sacrifices himself to save the Party. In the end, Steve goes out as a hero and a man, and Nancy is left crushed along with the Party. It just fits to me.
  2. Joyce is going to get stuck in the Upside Down and Will be the one doing the rescuing. Its been noted by the writers and on this sub that going full circle is a theme. In this way it would make sense that Joyce and likely a slew of others get trapped in the Upside Down and it will be up to Will and his connection to the realm/mind flayevecna to find them and save them.
  3. This is where I get controversial and maybe some points from the community. Vecna is a red herring. We've been made to believe that Vecna is the big bad. But is he? Or is there something larger at work? In my cursory understanding of eldritch and Lovecraftian horror, the whole point is that the human mind cannot comprehend it. Vecna is in a sense comprehensible. He's a psychopathic killer with a god complex. That's not that complex. Moreover, even DnD Vecna is a being that "attains" godhood through their machinations. Vecna is not an incomprehensible being from another world. He's a power-mad lich born from ours. I think the overall villain of the series is the Upside Down itself. It consumes everything subtly much in the way madness and shadow consume everything in Lovecraftian horror. We cannot understand because there is nothing to understand. The realm just moves and consumes and even convinces those who enter they have some kind of control. There is a consistent theme in season 4 that you can be lured into a false sense of security and then boom Vecna or something else appears. The veil comes down and it's already too late. There is also so much we don't understand or know about the upside down. That's by design and we will never know. In short, Vecna is not the main villain the Upside Down itself is the big bad.
  4. Eleven or Will will need to stay behind or perish to seal the Upside Down forever. I think there was a big hint dropped in Season 3 about the two person lock system for the gate. Every time the gate has been opened it's been a one sided affair. Eleven has torn the gates open multiple times. The Russians single handedly opened gates and Vecna has singlehandedly opened gates. This means you need one person on each side to ensure they remain closed. A two lock system. You need Will and Eleven to act as the gatekeepers to the Upside Down. Or you need to "throwaway the keys". The reason the Upside Down breaches our world is because it has lingering connections to it. All connections must be severed. To do that either someone must be actively monitoring and gatekeeping the connection or the keys get destroyed. In this case, the keys are Eleven and Will. Either they have work forever to control things or they have to sacrifice themselves to ensure the connection is permanently broken.
  5. Max is now one of Vecna's "phylacteries" or Host. In DnD a lich always has a phylactery, something that allows them to store their soul and remain immortal and undead. We've seen this concept in a lot of fantasy. There are many big hints that lead me to believe Max is now a phylactery or potentially Vecna's host. 1. Vecna has done this before to Max and her family with Billy, and we know Vecna loves to torment his victims this way. 2. When the Party defeats Vecna he fades away into the "Dust" and his physical body in the Upside Down vanishes. I believe Vecna did two things here, he invaded Max's mind like he did with Will and is lurking and hiding and he also took her body because the gates were open and he could slink away. This explains a couple of other things. Max is Alive because Vecna brought her back and took her as a host not because Eleven did anything. This also explains that when Eleven went into Max's mind while she's in a coma, she did not find Max. Max is gone folks. Finally, Will mentions he can feel Vecna and that he is hurting but certainly not dead. Well, Max has some physical reasons to be hurting and is definitely not dead. In short, Max is Vecna's Host/Phylactery and the Party either needs to kill her to somehow remove Vecna like they did with Will (full circle theme).

There is a statement that has acquired cult status, especially on the T20 circuit, over the years: 'Batters win you matches. Bowlers win you tournaments.' But how true is this? In the first 15 seasons of the IPL, we have seen franchises build teams with a balance weighing towards one side or the other depending on a multitude of factors such as their home venue, style of captaincy and resource availability.
As the 16th edition looms on the horizon, it is a good time to revisit the data from the past and see if the statement is just a subjective conclusion that has led to a sweeping generalization, or whether it actually holds water. A deep look at the numbers shows whether one discipline is actually more important than the other, but also reveals the most complete championship[1]winning side thus far, who was the standout franchise over the first 15 years, and how to succeed at a batting-friendly venue like the Chinnaswamy.
Methodology
In T20 cricket, every team has two resources at their disposal - balls and wickets. The batting side attempts to optimize the first resource by scoring as many runs off every ball delivered. The bowling side tries to concede as few runs as possible for every ball bowled and knows that an important way to do this is to reduce the wicket reserves of the batting team. The two key metrics here are runs scored per ball, and balls taken per dismissal. In more popular parlance, this is run rate and balls per dismissal for the batting team, and economy rate and strike rate for the bowling team.
A batting impact score is therefore derived by combining the run rate and balls per dismissal (RR x BpD/100), and similarly the formula for bowling impact score is the combination of economy rate and strike rate (ER x S100). To figure out a team's total impact score for a season, we compare their batting and bowling impact scores with the average of the other teams in the tournament.
For example, Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022 scored 8.72 runs per over and lost a wicket every 20.88 balls, whereas the other nine teams cumulatively scored at 8.52 and lost a wicket every 18.57 deliveries. This gives the Royals a batting impact score of 1.82 (8.72 x 20.88 divided by 100 = 1.82) compared to the tournament average of 1.58, meaning their net batting impact score was +0.24.
Likewise, they conceded at 8.51 per over and took a wicket every 19.19 balls in comparison to 8.54 and 18.76 by the other teams. This works out to a bowling impact score of 1.63 for the Royals, while the remaining nine sides managed 1.60. The net bowling value for the Royals is therefore -0.03, and their total impact score for IPL 2022 is +0.21 (+0.24 - 0.03).

'Batters win you matches and bowlers win you tournaments.' But do they?
​
Let's start by looking at the broader trend.
There are 126 instances of teams featuring across the 15 editions of IPL (Mumbai Indians for IPL 2008 is considered one instance, while their appearance in 2009 is considered another). Among those 126 instances, there have been 39 occasions that teams have finished with both batting and bowling impact scores in the green. The average final ranking for these sides is 2.7, which falls within the playoff qualification bracket (the top four sides qualify for the knockouts in IPL). In 27 instances teams have finished with a positive batting impact score and negative bowling impact score, and these sides on average have a ranking of 5.1.
On the other hand, of the 25 times teams finished with a negative batting impact score and positive bowling impact score, they had a marginal improvement in average ranking to 4.8. From the data analyzed above, it is safe to conclude that going bowling heavy at the expense of batting will not pay dividends and the sides that have done the best are the one that found the right balance, even if it is slightly tilted towards the bowling. If we look at individual cases, the above adage was perhaps put to its sternest test in 2018.
In general, across all T20 cricket, 2018 was the best batting year and the story was no different in IPL with scoring rates peaking at 8.65. CSK were the best batting team of the tournament with a batting impact score of +0.59, well ahead of the next placed Delhi Capitals (+0.24), while SRH was one of the two teams that ended with a positive bowling impact score. SRH successfully defended totals of under 150 thrice in the season and regularly restricted oppositions to par totals or below.
The two sides faced off against each other four times with CSK coming out on top on every occasion, including the final where they upstaged SRH's bowling by chasing 179 to win by eight wickets. In 13 matches against teams other than CSK that season, SRH went at 7.92 and picked a wicket every 17.18 balls, but they came undone against CSK with the same parameters reading 8.91 and 30.67 respectively from four exchanges.
CSK's batting impact score of +0.59 in 2018 was the best among all the teams that won IPL and they were one of only two trophy[1]winning sides to register a negative bowling impact score (MI in 2015 being the only other side). In this case, batting trumped bowling.

Another instance of this hypothesis being put through the acid test was in the 2015 final. This was the only instance of a final being played between a team with a positive bowling impact score and a negative batting impact score, and an opponent with scores the other way around. CSK, the league toppers, finished with impact scores of -0.04 and +0.27 in batting and bowling respectively.
Their opponents in the final - MI - were the best batting unit of the season with an impact score of +0.35, double the next best, while in bowling their score was -0.11. MI were 0.39 points ahead of CSK in batting and 0.38 points behind CSK in bowling making it the most batting vs bowling heavy sides in terms of impact scores facing each other in a summit clash. MI made 202/5 batting first and got the better of CSK, restricting them to 161 to make it 3-1 in head-to-head clashes in the season. So once again we saw batting strength getting the better of bowling strength.

The bowling heavy sides that went all the way

If the above suggests that it is batting that clinches trophies, let's look at some bowling teams that went all the way. In 2019, CSK were a hit away from clinching the title. The IPL returned to Chennai for a full season for the first time in a while and the tracks on offer at Chepauk slowed down significantly as the match progressed, which meant spin was the order of the day.
CSK realized this early and were aided in their pursuit by the fact they won six tosses out of eight home games. Luck factor aside, CSK on average bowled 15 balls of spin every innings more than their visitors, which proved to be the clincher. Imran Tahir was the Purple Cap winner that year with 26 scalps, while Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja played the supporting cast to perfection. Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo capped off the attack, owning either ends of the innings.
Each of CSK's top four leading wicket takers picked 15+ wickets at economy rates under 7.50 per over, covering up for what was one of CSK's weakest seasons with the bat. Two bowling dominant sides that went on to lift the silverware are Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural IPL and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, both with a bowling impact score of +0.28. Royals in 2008 had three of the four highest wicket takers (Sohail Tanvir, Shane Warne & Shane Watson) of the season, and a strong bowling attack was the backbone of their success at their bowling-friendly home in Jaipur, where they did not lose a single game.
The story was similar for KKR in 2012, where Sunil Narine led the attack with 24 wickets at an economy rate of 5.48 and was backed up by bowlers who made full use of the Eden Gardens track. No other championship-winning side has had their total impact score significantly boosted by bowling impact like KKR in 2012 (bowling impact score of +0.25 to batting impact score of +0.03). SRH in 2016 is another title-winning team whose balance was more skewed to their bowling unit.
They remain an anomaly as the only champions who had a negative batting impact score (-0.06), despite a cracking season from their skipper David Warner who hit 848 runs. Bhuvneshwar was the Purple Cap winner with 23 wickets and formed a formidable pairing with Mustafizur Rahman, who finished with 17 wickets and played big hand for them throughout the season.

The most complete championship-winning side

It would be little surprise to anyone who has followed IPL diligently to hear which was the most rounded side that ever lifted the silverware. No other side dominated an IPL season as much as Mumbai Indians did in the 2020 edition.
They lost just five games in the season, two via Super Over and one when they rested most of their first choice players, underscoring their dominance. SRH in 2017 aside (more on them later), MI in 2020 is the only team that finished with a batting impact score above +0.50 and a bowling impact score above +0.25.
They had a strong batting order with three of their top four batters (Quinton de Kock, Ishan Kishan & Suryakumar Yadav) aggregating 480+ runs at 140+ strike rate, while both Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya provided the finishing touch to the innings striking at 175+. MI scored at 9.09 per over and lost a wicket every 24.41 balls - RCB in 2016 is the only other instance of a team managing the double of 9+ run rate and 22+ balls per dismissal.
Despite the obvious chinks in the bowling attack - like the lack of a genuine second overseas seamer and Hardik's inability to bowl - Jasprit Bumrah (27 wickets, SR 13.33) and Trent Boult (25 wickets, SR 13.76) controlled either half of the innings, which ensured that their bowling towered above the rest. MI on average were +1.15 runs ahead every over of the opposition (run rate of 9.09 and economy rate of 7.94), which was the best a team managed in a season.

Chennai Super Kings, with an average impact score of +0.41 across the 13 editions in which they competed, is the standout IPL side in the first 15 years of the competition's journey. CSK registered a positive impact score in 12 of the 13 seasons they featured in, missing out only in IPL 2022 - which also happens to be the only time both their batting and bowling impact scores were in negative territory Among the sides which have featured in at least three editions SRH is a territory. Among the sides which have featured in at least three editions, SRH is a distant second with an average impact score of +0.14, while MI is the only other side to register a net average impact score in positive territory (+0.09).
Of the top ten entries on total impact score across the 15 editions, CSK occupy as many as five of them, with three of those culminating in title wins (2011, 2018 & 2021). In all three title-winning seasons, they managed a +0.50 batting impact score while their bowling impact score in all of these seasons was below +0.10, underscoring how batting-dominant CSK have been in their successful years. CSK teams are renowned for having deep batting lineups and they often rely on skipper MS Dhoni's tactical acumen to ensure the bowling unit's output is greater than the sum of its parts.
The only exception to this trend was their maiden title win in 2010 where they achieved their lowest batting impact score (+0.25) and highest bowling impact score (+0.11) of their four title-winning seasons. They were staring at an early exit midway through the tournament with just two wins from seven matches but regrouped well in the second half to win five matches, four of them at their bastion at Chepauk, to stage a comeback that culminated in the double of IPL and CLT20 trophies.

Cracking the Chinnaswamy code
A common denominator for every T20 dynasty is the dominance at their home ground and a team built around the characteristics of it - for example the fast bouncy wickets at Perth for the Scorchers, or the Chepauk turner for Chennai Super Kings. The Chinnaswamy Stadium typically presents a flat wicket combined with short boundaries, negating the home team's ability to assemble a squad tailored to the venue and leaving them little home advantage.
Yet RCB seemed to crack the code when they realized it is futile to plan to defend runs, and a far better strategy to go hunting for wickets. The 2015 RCB bowling attack did this to perfection when four of their highest wicket takers (Yuzvendra Chahal, Mitchell Starc, Harshal Patel & David Wiese - all with 15+ wickets each) combined to take 76 wickets between them at a rate of one every 13.9 balls. RCB's strike rate of 15.10 in that season is the best any side had managed in a season and the blueprint was set.
In the following year, they followed the same strategy with changes in personnel around Chahal. Chahal broke the door to national team selection with a 21-wicket season (SR 14.05) and was assisted by Shane Watson (20 wickets, SR 16.95), Chris Jordan (11 wickets, SR 15.27) and Sreenath Aravind (11 wickets, SR 15.91). As mentioned below, they failed to grab the clutch moments in the final and fell at the last hurdle for the third time.
The Chinnaswamy wicket was re-laid in 2017 but RCB veered away from this approach in the following years, failing to qualify for the Play Offs for three consecutive seasons between 2017 and 2019. They haven't played at the venue in the post-Covid era, a phase in which they have leaned towards a strong bowling lineup - unlike the sides of the past which were heavily loaded towards batting. RCB did find some success with their new approach, making the Play Offs for three successive years since 2020. How RCB's fortunes will pan out as they return to their home at Chinnaswamy will be one of the stories to watch out for in the 2023 IPL.

The outliers

In the 126 instances of teams featuring in the IPL so far, only one team has managed a total impact score of over one point. To the surprise of many, the team in picture is SunRisers Hyderabad in 2017, who finished third in the league phase, winning eight of the 13 completed games. SRH lost a wicket every 26.32 balls, which happens to be the second best a team ever managed in a season(marginally behind Chennai Super Kings' 26.63 in 2014).
Bowling strike rate wise, their 16.36 deliveries per wicket was only bettered on two other instances, giving them a positive difference of almost ten balls for every wicket lost and every wicket taken - the highest any team has ever achieved in a season. SRH in 2017 had five batters aggregating over 200 runs, four of them averaging over 28 balls per dismissal, while four of them scored those runs at a 135+ strike rate.
David Warner won the Orange Cap for his 641 runs (SR 142, BpD 41) followed by Shikhar Dhawan (479 runs, SR 127, BpD 29), Moises Henriques (277 runs, SR 136, BpD 34), Kane Williamson (256 runs, SR 151, BpD 28) and Yuvraj Singh (252 runs, SR 142, BpD 20). SunRisers' run rate of 8.64 was the highest they ever managed in an IPL season, further underlining how good a season they had batting wise - in a phase where SRH were renowned for their bowling-heavy strategy under Tom Moody.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the bowling charts, winning Purple Cap for the second year running with an eye popping strike rate of 12 balls every wicket. A teenaged Rashid Khan made giant strides in his debut IPL season with 17 scalps at an economy of 6.63, followed by Siddarth Kaul and Mohammed Siraj, who bagged 16 and 10 scalps at strike rates of 13.4 and 13.8 respectively.
In a tournament where they dominated with both bat and ball, SRH were unlucky not to go further as they crashed out in the Eliminator to KKR at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The tracks at Chinnaswamy were re-laid before the season which made it play contrary to its usual self, making batting a mean job. Adding to SRH's misfortune, the chase was cut short when rain reduced the game to a five-over shootout, leaving them little chance of a comeback.

The only other instance a team came close to match SunRisers' feat was RCB in IPL 2016, where they finished with a net impact score of +0.96. They assembled what could arguably be the finest batting lineup the IPL has ever witnessed - Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Shane Watson, and KL Rahul making up their top five. Kohli's magnum opus of 973 runs in a single edition in 2016 remains unmatched, and he was ably supported by AB de Villiers (687 runs, Avg 52.85, SR 169) and KL Rahul in what was his breakout season (397 runs, Avg 44.11, SR 146). RCB's scoring of 9.63 in 2016 is the best any team has managed in an IPL season thus far, and they did so losing a wicket only every 26.17 balls, giving them a batting impact score of 0.92 - the highest any team achieved in a season.
Gayle and Watson did not have particularly fruitful tournaments with the bat, but Watson more than made it up for that with his best season with the ball, accounting for 20 wickets. Like SRH in 2017, RCB was also unlucky not to end their title drought in 2016 as they failed to latch on to the key moments on the night that mattered. From a winning position, their inform middle order choked under pressure in the back half of the run chase to end eight runs short.

The unlucky ones

Of the top 25 teams on total impact score, the only side that failed to make it past the league phase is the RCB side of 2013. They finished with a total impact score of +0.60, while no other side that finished outside the top four could even get to +0.30. RCB in 2013 also remain the only side across 15 seasons that failed to finish in the top four despite winning more than half of their league games (nine wins and seven defeats from 16 league games).
MI in 2008 is another side that was unfortunate to miss the knockouts despite a total impact score of +0.28. They started off in the worst possible manner, losing four games on the trot, their original captain injured and their stand-in captain suspended. They staged a remarkable comeback to win their next six games before falling agonizingly short in the final over in their following three games.

This story is about an innocent mistake that most people make. The names are all different but the details are the same. I know not everyone has the time to read it to the end. That’s fine. The key takeaway is simple. Never, ever let a stranger borrow your phone to take a picture. Just don’t fucking do it. Please. You’ll soon see why.
My little family of four woke up early one morning to go to the beach. My daughter and I had this running bet. Every time she slept in her own bed, she got a surprise, you know, a reward for being good. The first night it was ice cream, then a donut, then a toy. I was running out of incentives because she kept fulfilling her end of the deal. So being that it was the weekend, and the weather was nice, I thought it would be cool to get some sun in before the tourists arrived for the holiday.
Our plan worked like a charm. We got to the sand and pitched a tent in a quiet spot away from commotion. The waves lapped aimlessly against the shore. The water was crystal clear. Sofia built sand castles with pink plastic buckets and Joey gave the seagulls his best t-rex impression. The memory of Emma stretched out in a two-piece is burned so hot it’s like it’s branded. I loved those trips if for nothing else than to stare beneath the cover of my long sleeve SPF-shit swim shirt. I felt about as lucky as any other man in the world. Life was good.
We stayed there a little while. I thumbed through a book. Em scanned her phone. The kids joined forces to build a moat which kept (some of) the tide away. Eventually, foot traffic picked up along with the opening of a couple shops on the boardwalk. We got ready to leave. I knelt down go corral the toys when an unfamiliar voice called out -
β€œYou have a beautiful family,” he exclaimed. β€œTruly. So blessed.”
I turned around to find my wife facing a stranger.
β€œOh. Thank you!” She chirped back. β€œYes… I think so too.”
We sat there a bit in awkward silence. He smiled. We smiled. He was older, maybe in his sixties or seventies. He wore black slacks and a white shirt, with one of those odd gray golf gaps that perched like a beret. He seemed ordinary enough. Friendly and all that jazz. He just wouldn’t go away.
β€œOh. You should take a picture. You’ll want to remember this gorgeous day,” he quipped. β€œFamily memories are so important. I keep albums for all my grandchildren.”
Emma’s ears perked at the suggestion.
β€œOh yeah, you know Matt, we really haven’t had a good one in ages.”
I hung my head in solemn agreement.
β€œGuess you’re right.”
She groaned.
β€œMy cell’s dead. Can you use yours?”
I rummaged through my bag and handed it over. The man quickly gave it back.
β€œLocked.”
I entered the code.
β€œOkay!” the stranger cheered. β€œKids, smile like you mean it! Parents, too! Happy days! Say… tangerine!”
We laughed.
β€œTangerine!”
And that was it. The entire encounter lasted about five minutes. The stranger delivered my phone and shook my hand. I thanked him. I threw it in my bag, gathered our stuff, and got the kids ready. We jetted to the car and beat the worst of the traffic back home. The rest of the day flew by with usual activities. Gymnastics and lunch with grandparents and birthday parties. One moment faded into the next and the topic of the odd stranger got lost.
The photo, however, came up again around dinner time.
Emma needed head-shots for work and remembered to remind me (hah) to send her the beach shot. I pulled out my cell and went through my messages. I couldn't find it at first. That's when I found something unfamiliar. There was one sent text to an unknown number from that same morning.
"Hey, hon.."
I pulled up the conversation history. A picture loaded. The four of us cheesed back at the camera from the shade of our umbrella. Luke had a bucket on his head. Sofia put two fingers behind her mom. I scanned through my other texts and there was nothing else out of the ordinary. But it was still, you know, weird.
My first reaction was to call the number. I dialed once and got a busy signal. I hung up and dialed again. Error message. I dialed a third time, got up, and started to pace.
β€œWhat?” Emma asked. β€œYou alright?”
I knew she wouldn’t take it seriously. It was quite a leap at that point.
β€œThis is going to sound weird.”
β€œWhat?”
β€œI think this guy texted himself a picture of us.”
She stared at me for a second. I stared back. Then she laughed.
β€œDude,” she gasped. β€œWhy? Why would anyone do that? We are not that interesting.”
I called the number again. This time it didn’t stop ringing.
β€œI know I sound paranoid. But, really. Look. I didn't send this text message and it's on my phone. The number is legit, like, it’s got our area code and everything.”
Emma rolled her eyes.
β€œMaybe he did it by accident,” she sighed. β€œHe was old. He probably doesn’t know how to text.”
I wanted to press the topic. I hated the idea that someone could have access to my phone. I think anyone would. But it was late, and she was skeptical, and we only had minutes to talk before someone wanted a bottle or a juice or a snack or an episode of their favorite show. I pushed it to β€˜Matt's future queue’ and fell back into routine.
The storm brought both kids into our bed sometime around midnight. I woke up to find my daughter climbing over my already snoring son. Sofia snuggled up beside me as rain pattered against the windowsill. I couldn’t say no. The kid had cuteness on her side and she hated bad weather. At least I wouldn’t need another surprise. I held her tight, and just as sleep seemed like it might be a possibility, the doorbell rang.
My heart skipped a beat.
We live pretty deep in the woods. Our nearest neighbor is about a mile away. My house isn't exactly the type of place you might expect a late night visitor. Sofia stared at me wide-eyed in the dark. My wife didn't stir. We waited in silence. The bell rang again.
I got up out of bed and looked for something clean to wear. I found a shirt on the floor and some socks in the hamper. I gave the baseball bat behind the dresser a good long look before deciding against it. Sof whined nervously.
β€œStay here.”
I could tell that she was scared. I guess that sort of put me into super-parent mode. Dad the hero. Dad the protector. A whole lot of ego and not much else to back it up. I grabbed the bat on the way out and whispered back.
β€œI’ll be okay. Stay with Mama.”
The hallway outside our bedroom led to a staircase in front of the door. The bell rang again. I picked up my pace and hurdled down the steps as our visitor found the brass lion knocker attached to the frame.
Bam. Bam. Bam.
I took a breath and looked through the peephole.
The woman on my porch looked to be about twenty to twenty-five years old. She was blonde and pretty with hoop earrings and smeared makeup. I looked at her for a little while longer before doing anything. There was something about her eyes. She looked confused, or high, or something. So I kept the door closed.
β€œCan I help you?”
She knocked again. Then again. And again and again until the door shook and blonde hair thrashed back and forth across her face.
β€œHello?” I shouted. β€œHey! Can you stop?”
The knocking ceased.
β€œOh. Hi.”
β€œHello.”
β€œCan I help you?”
She paused. She smiled.
β€œYes. I want to take a picture of you.”
My lungs deflated.
β€œWhat the fuck? No.”
She smiled.
β€œPlease?”
β€œWhat are you talking about?” I snapped. β€œIt’s the middle of the night. What are you doing here?”
She frowned.
β€œYou let HIM take a picture.”
I didn’t answer. She rang the bell again. My blood pressure jumped.
β€œI’m going to need you to get the fuck off my property. Now. I’m calling the cops.”
She smiled. She stared at the little hole in the door for a full minute or two. Then she walked away silently.
As if nothing had ever happened.
The moment shook me. It took a while for the adrenaline to wear off. I thought about calling the police. I wondered what the hell to even tell them. I locked the doors and searched the rest of the house. I calmed down a little bit when it was empty. I went back upstairs to check on my family. Emma was stretched out with one arm around each kid. Thunder rumbled through the windows. They slept through the whole thing.
I pulled my phone from the charger. I wanted to message a friend for advice. That's when I noticed a new text. Just one. A picture of me standing in my boxers.
Someone was watching through the back window.

AEW is in crisis. Its champion and biggest star turned the world upside down three days prior. CM Punk is in exile, two titles are vacant, and three of the company’s founders have their futures in jeopardy. The landscape is pure chaos. Amidst that chaos, a villain strolls out to the stage with a big smile on his face.
MJF eats it all up… AEW’s greatest heel may have become its greatest face in one night. The live audience is jubilant to see him and he reciprocates, diving into them just as CM Punk had done, hugging Taz at the broadcast desk, wearing the jersey of that city’s football team.
Joy reverberates in his words once he grabs the microphone:
"BUFFALO, NEW YORK! THE DEVIL IS BACK! Now listen up Buffalo, first things first... Who's excited to see MJF? β€œLord knows I am. Guys, I love Buffalo, New York, hell the greatest Quarterback of all time, Josh Allen is from Buffalo. Now, we're gonna get down to brass tacks a little bit here, okay? Last time you guys saw me I might've said some offensive stuff, I'm just being honest…
The fans strike up a loud chant: β€œYOU WERE RIGHT”
Now hear me out, hear me out, hear me out... Hold on g-- Seriously, I only have so much time allotted. Shut up. Please. Jesus. Alright listen... If there's one thing I know to be true, it's that right now you might think that we're in dark times, but we're not. What we need is leadership. And I can not think of one more person, more trustworthy than me! Now let me tell you a story: there was once a wise Jewish man, and his name started with a M. In front of all these grotesque, poor, lard asses who have quite possibly the worst Football Team in the history of the United States of America? [MJF shed’s the jersey and wipes his ass with it] … Now Jon, I don't know if you're a little bit woozy considering you went to sleep on Sunday… [MJF mimes CM Punk's β€œGo To Sleep” pose]
But maybe you got a point. Maybe I don't care about AEW.... Maybe I don't care about these people... Maybe, just maybe I look at the World Title as nothing more than a bargaining chip that I can use for the bidding war of 2024. Maybe I take that title to a real Wrestling Company, WITH REAL FANS. And real wrestlers like my friend and hero 'The American Roller Coad-ster' Cody Rhodes. And – I'M HOLDING THE MICROPHONE YOU BUMS! KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! And maybe, just maybe I get to work for a real boss, the only Khan in professional wrestling that's worth a damn; Jolly Old St. Nick. MJF stands toe-to-toe with Moxley before slithering out of the ring. Mox continues:
Hey, your theme music sucks by the way. Now Buffalo, New York. I am in no mood... I am pissed off. I am embarrassed. I am pissed off about a great many things. But none more so than the fact that I'm standing here without the AEW World Championship... The AEW World Championship represents passion for this sport! Passion for this business! It represents the passion of the guys and girls in the back, and the fans that fill the arenas and watch at home. Those three letters in the AEW World Championship, they represent heroes during a pandemic at a time where the world needed heroes. It represents the dream, the vision that we all had when we started this thing years ago, and we wanted to show the world just what wrestling could be. The AEW World Championship represents taking the dark and ugly side of this business and letting it die with another generation. But winners always want the ball when the game is on the line. The Ace always wants the ball. And I want the ball. So hell yeah, I'm gonna take the shot.
Cause this isn't just a time to win… This is a time to be a legend!
Moxley leaves to a furious ovation and has rallied the AEW fans back to reason and rationality. It’s only temporary though, and an unnerved mood persists. The message is delivered by Moxley, truly the Ace of the company… But it feels like it should’ve come from someone else and perhaps that someone else would have been there to deliver it if he wasn't turned away. Better yet, the situation may have been avoided entirely.
But then again, maybe the whole damn thing was inevitable all along.
January 4, 2016 - Tokyo
Following their tag win over CHAOS, Kenny Omega betrays and usurps the leader of Bullet Club, AJ Styles, at NJPW: New Year’s Dash.
"AJ Styles! My god, you can't be surprised, can you? You people, you can't be surprised. You at home you better not be surprised. You had this coming, AJ. We gave you the big matches, we gave you the big pay-per-views. We made you a star, we paid you like a star. While I struggled, while I starved, forcing myself to be a junior. Everybody called you a leader, everybody called you the boss. Well AJ, if you are the boss, I'm just gonna say it. You have now been fired.
The rest of the Bullet Club is initially in disagreement before coalescing around Kenny and ganging up on Styles. They leave with their former leader in a heap, but Kenny and the Young Bucks gather at ringside. The three of them return to the ring and continue the brutal assault on AJ Styles… They are still in the Bullet Club, but within that organization, henceforth they will be The Elite.
January 4, 2017 - Wrestle Kingdom 11
Having stormed through his first ever attempt in the tournament, Kenny Omega became the only gaijin to have ever won New Japan’s G1 Tournament and earned the right to challenge for the company’s top prize at WK11.
That night in the Tokyo Dome, Omega and Okada created magic in one of the greatest matches in wrestling history. On the same show, Bullet Club’s newest member debuts: Cody Rhodes. Frustrated with his position and his creative direction, Cody had requested and been granted his release from WWE the previous summer, Cody makes his way across the Pacific, sending shockwaves through the international wrestling landscape.
Despite this shot in the arm, Bullet Club is tested by the crushing defeat of its leader. Following his loss to Okada, Kenny steps away from wrestling to assess his future. When he returns after several weeks Cody had grown ambitious and plots in the background.
June 11, 2017 - Dominion
In a rematch of their classic from the start of the year at Wrestle Kingdom 11, Kenny Omega attempts to avenge his defeat and claim the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Kazuchika Okada. Earlier in the night, Cody had grabbed a headset and proclaimed he wanted to face Okada himself.
Omega and Okada push each other over the limit even harder than before. Omega is taking inhuman punishment yet refuses to give up. Eventually, Cody makes his way down to the ring and attempts to throw in the towel for Kenny, but the Bucks stop him.
The timekeeper’s bell rings, marking it a 60-minute draw.
Afterward, the Elite debate whether it was a true act of mercy by Cody or a scheme for his personal goals
Cody storms Okada’s post-match press conference, where he mocks the champ, spits in his face, and challenges him for a title match.
May 16, 2017 - The Bet
Dave Meltzer quote-tweets a question asking if anyone could sell 10,000 tickets to a non-WWE show in America, to which he replies, β€œNot anytime soon.”
Cody takes note and responds: β€œI'll take that bet Dave… put The Bucks & I on the card & 3-months to promote”... Over the next year this grand dream between Cody and the Young Bucks will come to fruition.
July 1, 2017 - Returning the Favor
Cody unsuccessfully challenges Okada for the IWGP championship. Kenny comes to ringside and wants to throw in the towel just as Cody had tried weeks earlier. After the match, the two of them nearly come to blows backstage and Cody flips a table.
August 2017 - G1 Climax
Throughout the tournament, Bullet Club nears a boiling point. OG member Toma Tonga questions Omega’s leadership due to having his small inner circle of The Elite within the larger group. In the weeks and months to follow, Cody identifies Kota Ibushi as Kenny Omega’s weakest point and starts targeting him as a wedge to divide the Bullet Club and create chaos wherein he can ascend to power.
January 4, 2018 - Wrestle Kingdom 12
Looking to use a win over Ibushi as a flashpoint to take control of Bullet Club, Cody viciously mauls Kota in a singles match but can’t secure the victory. Frustrated that his plan failed, the next night at New Year’s Dash he launches a post-match assault on Ibushi. Cody and the rest of Bullet Club are wailing on Ibushi until Kenny rushes out to stop them… but the rest of Bullet Club can’t help feeling Kenny views his old tag partner as more important to him than they are. Cody’s plan bears fruit as Kenny makes a massive unforced error: he invites β€œSwitchblade” Jay White to join Bullet Club and be a shot in the arm for the faction, only for White to betray him immediately and join CHAOS.
January 7, 2018 - Being the Elite #87
Camera follows the Elite as they are tense and nervous preparing for Wrestle Kingdom a few days earlier. It jumps to the group after New Year’s Dash, all gathered at a tense dinner conversation. To break the tension, Matt proposes a new gimmick for the group: β€œBTE IS DRUG FREE”... aka, Straight Edge… no one shoots it down, but they’re not thrilled either, and Cody hides his beer underneath the table.
The effort to relieve things fails, however, and Cody blurs the line between kayfabe and shoot, shouting for the cameraman to put the camera down. Then we get a fly-on-the-wall glimpse at him charging Kenny with always β€œturning everything into a bit”, disregarding the group, and heatedly asking him if he’s actually their leader before Kenny finally storms away from the table.
January 28, 2018 - Civil War
Jay White scores a massive upset at New Beginning and takes the IWGP United States Championship from Kenny Omega. After the bell, Hangman confronts Jay White and seeks to challenge for the title, but Kenny stops him. The Bucks and Cody rush to the ring, and Cody accuses their leader of stepping on Hangman’s moment. A violent argument ensues with Kenny shoving Matt Jackson to the ground.
Once the Elite have left the ring and Kenny is alone, Cody seizes the opportunity and hits Kenny with a CrossRhodes, initiating the Bullet Club Civil War. The only thing saving Omega from a brutal attack that night is Ibushi, who runs off Cody and returns the favor for his old friend and partner, reuniting the Golden Lovers after years of separation. Regardless, Cody’s plan is in full effect. Bullet Club is in disarray and if he is to take power, now is the opportunity.
In 944 days, Roman Reigns becomes world champion to begin his and the Bloodline's vice grip on WWE.
January 30, 2018 - Being The Elite #90
Cody, to the assembled Elite of Matt, Nick, Hangman, and Marty:
It isn’t my place, but you’ve known that guy for over ten years. I don’t get it, I’m sorry. Yeah, he’s a great wrestler, but leadership… Like I said, it’s action not position! That’s not acting like a leader! β€˜Oh, you’re my second, you’re my second’... Who the F-CK are you seconds for? Nobody! The best tag team in the world! And Hangman, it’s your moment! He… He ruined it.
Bullet Club is fine… Bullet Club is fine.
Kenny & Ibushi go to visit the Bucks in their hotel room, Room 710… but we aren’t shown what happens next.
February 12, 2018 – Being the Elite #92
Cody floats around reassuring everyone: β€œBullet Club is fine.” All of the guys have pure depression on their faces, but Cody continually gasses them up, telling the Bucks they’re ready for the jump to the heavyweight division and encouraging Marty to start up a Villain Club of his own. Later, Matt, Nick, and Marty are commiserating in a locker room prior to a Ring of Honor show when Hangman and Cody strut through the door.
Cody, smugly:
β€œWhew, look at that! Did you guys see [Hangman] kick the door down??”
He thinks a couple of surprises might cheer them up. The first, some new merch that says β€œBullet Club is Fine” doesn’t do the trick, so he takes them for the second surprise: their new mascot, Bury the Drug-Free Bear. Using his best Sting voice, Cody introduces Bury as someone who will β€œshock the world” only for him to β€œfall on his f-ckin’ arse” like the Shockmaster did 25 years earlier.
Kenny tries to call Matt, but Cody sees the call coming through on the phone and declines it.
February 19, 2018 – Being the Elite #93
Cody maneuvers the Bucks around the Melbourne airport to keep them from running into Kenny. While traveling, Cody further drives the Ibushi wedge between Matt and the absent Kenny and plays up that Kenny only views the Bucks as a junior tag team. Later, Cody takes the brothers out to the zoo and to the movie theater as we see Kenny emotionally watching Casablanca on his phone.
The Bucks catch up with Tonga and the OGs backstage in a locker room where they try to make peace.
Matt:
β€œAlright guys, thanks for gathering here. Nick and I feel like there’s one important thing that we need to talk about… I think it’s kind of obvious, right? There’s a divide in the Bullet Club. It’s almost like there’s two entities all of a sudden. It’s like there’s Bullet Club BTE and Bullet Club OGs… Nick and I have been watching what you’ve been doing in Japan… holding down the fort, representing the Bullet Club, making the name proud. But we’ve been back at home in the US doing the same thing. There is no heat here. We love you guys. When we all say that catchphrase, when we say β€˜Bullet Club is for life’, we mean it. It’s not just a catchphrase, okay? There’s no heat here. The only heat is between two individuals: Cody and Kenny.”
Tonga:
β€œCody is right. Bullet Club is fine.”
The two groups shake hands, then Cody enters the locker room, surprised to see everyone together:
β€œDid somebody call a meeting? I didn’t call a meeting…”
In strolls Kenny.
Kenny: So there he is. The snake in the grass. Three-star savior. Hey Cody.
Cody: Did you see the sign outside? It says 'Bullet Club'.
Kenny: That's right, and I AM THE LEADER.
They start brawling and the others can barely keep them apart.
Cody:
Touch me and I'll sue! Touch me and I'll sue!!
Cody throws a chair that barely misses Kenny and the Bucks.
Matt and Nick look at each other, devastated at what’s become of the group.
February 25, 2018 - Being the Elite #94
Matt Jackson is on a plane traveling between shows, doing the same thing as Kenny from the previous episode: watching Casablanca.
For those who haven't seen it, the story at the heart of the film is a love triangle: cynical club owner Rick, his first love Ilsa, and her rebel husband Laszlo, enhanced by a background of espionage and war with the local police chief, Renault, at the crossroads of the entanglements.
It’s foreshadowing the story to come. In the film, Rick and Ilsa had a passionate love before the events on screen, but they split up and Ilsa then wound up with her now-husband Laszlo, a Czech rebel carrying vital documents for the resistance against Nazi Germany. Rick and Ilsa reunite and rekindle their romance until Rick – knowing she’s better off with her husband – convinces Ilsa to leave with Laszlo before local authorities catch them. Rick stays behind, killing the evil Major Strasser who was attempting to stop the married couple from escaping Casablanca. Renault, who has been playing both sides (Germans and Resistance) up to this point, is touched by Rick's sacrifice. Other policemen arrive and see Strasser's dead body. Rather than identify Rick as the culprit, Renault instructs the cops to "round up the usual suspects"... And of course, that classic line provides the name of the film The Usual Suspects, from which Punk, and MJF, and Don Callis have all quoted the final line:
"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was making you believe he doesn't exist."
The Usual Suspects is a tale of a mysterious crime lord who manipulates and controls multiple criminals to achieve his ultimate goal and get away scot-free. It is tightly designed so that if you rewatch it knowing the ending, you realize and notice dozens of things you missed on the first viewing.
As Casablanca ends, Rick says to Renault: "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship", implying that if they work together, they can get away with almost anything…
This BTE episode ends with the group all in Japan. The Bucks approach Kenny and Ibushi to have a conversation, but Kenny doesn’t have time for them. Later that night at the event, Cody pulls the Bucks into a hallway and implores them to listen to the promo Kenny is cutting in the ring at that exact moment, where he declares the Golden Lovers the greatest tag team in the world. Cody pushes them to go handle it. The Young Bucks go to the ring while Cody flashes a devilish smile.
Matt:
From this day forward, my brother and I have decided to move up and compete in the heavyweight tag team division.
It puts them directly in opposition with the Lovers. Kenny and Ibushi confront them backstage, but the Bucks don’t take anything from him, saying they’ve always been there to support him but it’s never been returned. All those times they were there to pick Kenny up off the mat, where was Ibushi?
March 5, 2018 - BTE #95
In Vegas, Matt and Nick are in the dressing room talking when Bury the Drug Free Bear enters and seems desperate to tell them something. Bury is about to remove the head to his costume when Hangman bursts in. He is angry with Matt for not helping him during his confrontation with Joey Ryan the week prior. Cody enters and asks Bury why he hasn't got his Bullet Club shirt on and pulls him away to get changed. Everyone looks confused and Matt wonders what the bear was trying to tell them.
Cody is in the production studio and calls Nick over to suggest that Matt is holding him back and that he should consider wrestling in singles matches, but Nick looks unconvinced. Later that night, Cody is in the ring celebrating with Brandi and Bury after his match. As Cody goes to hug Bury, the bear pushes him to the floor. Standing over a prone, confused Cody, Bury removes his costume head to reveal Kenny Omega ,who knocks out Cody with a knee strike as the fans go wild.
Cody is demented after the match:
β€œWhat a time. What a time to be involved in this great sport… Everybody’s eyes in this sport are fixed on New Orleans, on Supercard of Honor… my very first encounter with Kenny Omega. So wouldn’t that be enough? As a professional… that feather in your cap, that everybody is talking about your match, that everybody wants to see your match, that you have stolen the [Wrestlemania] weekend from the rich and you have given it to the poor… wouldn’t that be enough?
So why the… escalation? Why come to Las Vegas? … You’re supposed to be the best wrestler in the world! A hero! You’ve got a bag full of them [match rating] stars, well I have a book full of dates, full of cities, full of towns, because I’m not a hero once a month! I’m a hero every single night!
Perception is no longer reality. Reality is reality.
And the reality is that I am the leader of the Bullet Club… that I am the hero in this story.”
March 20, 2018 – BTE #97
Just like he did with Nick previously, Cody sequesters Matt and says his brother has been holding him back and he needs a singles push.
In Japan, Kenny records a message to the Young Bucks apologizing, saying how Cody has gotten into everyone’s heads and divided the group, and hopes to make amends… Unbeknownst to him, Cody has Nick’s laptop so he intercepts the message and edits it down to an insulting challenge. Matt is enraged, but Nick is suspicious.
March 25, 2018 – The Elite Fight It Out
In Los Angeles at NJPW: Strong Style Evolved, the Golden Lovers face the Young Bucks in a deeply personal grudge match. After a brutal, back-and-forth war where the Lovers emerge victorious, Kenny attempts to bury the hatchet. Nick accepts the olive branch, but Matt refuses to shake Kenny’s hand. Cody hits the ring and berates Matt for eating the pin during the match. When Nick intervenes, Cody spins around and shoves him to the ground.
Later in the locker room, Cody comes in to ask what happened out there. The Bucks are challenging him for his actions, but Cody shouts them down, saying he thought it was Kenny in the ring and that he would never do such a thing to them. Cody apologizes profusely and leaves.
Nick:
β€œI don’t think we can trust this guy.”
April 7, 2018 – Supercard of Honor XII
With the leadership of Bullet Club at stake, Kenny Omega and Cody Rhodes square off in a hard-hitting match. Having grown wary of Cody and his schemes, the Bucks come down to the ring and decide to attack Cody. They launch double superkicks… but Cody ducks and the kicks land on Omega, allowing Cody to hit his finisher and claim the win. Matt and Nick attempt to explain, but Kenny refuses to listen.
In the backstage area, Cody is ecstatic at wresting control of Bullet Club away from Kenny. He wants to celebrate, but the Elite leave the dressing room and leave Cody sitting alone in his ring gear, sweaty, bloody, with a black eye and a gym towel draped around his shoulders, looking starkly similar to another guy post-match four years later…
June 4, 2018 – BTE #105
After a busy summer in which Cody and the Bucks have assembled the looming All In event, Matt and Nick try establishing lines of communication with Kenny in Japan. Ibushi implores him to reconcile with his old friends but he’s reluctant. Cody is obsessed with running a Senate election campaign in Texas and practices his speeches in bathroom mirrors, but it almost sounds like he’s talking to his stablemates. Meanwhile, a package that Matt and Nick sent him weeks ago has been collecting dust the whole time. Ahead of his fourth match with Kazuchika Okada, Kenny decides to open the package…
June 9, 2018 – Omega vs Okada IV
Everyone is in Japan for the big Dominion show. Hangman approaches Cody and asks what the plan is for tonight. Cody looks sullen and calls off whatever he had been plotting to ruin Omega’s big night.
Kenny triumphs in possibly the greatest match in wrestling history, claiming the IWGP heavyweight championship. He reunites with the Young Bucks afterward, and it’s revealed that in the package are Golden Elite shirts, honoring the pact they made in Hotel Room 710 at the start of the year.
Cody approaches the locker room with congratulatory gifts for Kenny and to make peace, but he stops short and leaves them outside the door.
July 7, 2018 – Debts Are Settled in San Francisco
At the G1 Special NJPW show, Cody challenges Omega for the IWGP championship. After a war with Kenny emerging in triumph, the Elite gather and celebrate… until the Bullet Club OGs attack them in retribution for the dysfunction and strife they’ve brought to the group over the previous two years. Cody returns to the ring and is given a chance to brutalize Kenny, but instead he defends him and rejoins the Elite in full.
Over the coming months, Cody, Kenny, Matt, Nick and Hangman solidify themselves as a core group leading up to:
September 1, 2018 - All In
By far the greatest triumph in indie wrestling history, the show was a massive success both at live gate and on PPV, wildly exceeding all expectations. In its main event, Cody wins the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, the same world title his father had claimed 31 years earlier.
After this monumental night, the Elite ceded the war for control of Bullet Club to the OGs and stepped away from the group, turning their attention to the establishment of something new entirely: All Elite Wrestling. This new national promotion came into being on January 1, 2019, and at its forefront was the core group of five. As the inaugural and omnipresent face of the company, Cody’s claim to AEW gold is surely just a matter of time.

Allied with his friend, protege, and personal recruit to AEW, Maxwell Jacob Friedman, the public face of AEW prepares to challenge for the world championship of the company he helped build. He seems destined for it, it’s damn near his birthright, and yet there are whispers he’s only in position to claim it through politics.
Cody:
β€œEddie Graham... Cowboy Bill Watts... The American Dream Dusty Rhodes... For the cold and sterile historians of our business, there's an air of controversy that surrounds them, it's from the simple fact that those men were also, in addition to being competitors... they were management. Not unlike myself. And for the last year I've told everybody: every podcast, every radio, every correspondent. I've shouted it off the rooftops how proud I am of AEW, how proud I am of the all-inclusive nature, of the schedule, of the pay, of the fact that we will listen. This! This is Ellis Island for a professional wrestler! This is freedom! So, when I hear the same criticism attached to my name for being management and being in a title match… I can't not hear it... And with that said, I am announcing that if I do not defeat Chris Jericho at Full Gear... I will never challenge for the AEW World championship again.”
And so Cody faced Chris Jericho at Full Gear 2019 with destiny in his grasp. There, with MJF in his corner, Cody and Jericho pushed each other to their limits. Late in the match with the challenger locked tight in the Walls of Jericho, MJF throws in the towel for Cody and costs him the match, effectively locking him out of the title picture thereafter.
MJF’s ascension begins. He wins the Dynamite Diamond Ring and begins climbing the rankings. Winning isn’t simply enough, though. If he wants everything, he needs chaos. He needs to flip the world upside down. He needs the world to believe its heroes are the villains and its villains are the heroes.

After weeks of taunting and weeks of enduring the original gauntlet of trials MJF sets in order to get a match with him, Cody gets his match with MJF… but he falls short, defeated and humiliated by the young man he brought into AEW himself.
March 5, 2020 – Cody is bitten by the original Snake
Jake Roberts emerges from the thickest of weeds and slithers down to the ring. He nearly devours Cody. He mocks him… β€œHail Caesar”. He neither fears nor respects him.
β€œWhat a Snake wants, a snake takes. I’m not in AEW for the whole pie.. Just your slice”
Two weeks later the world screeches to a halt as an unknown, lethal virus spreads rapidly around the globe. For several weeks Dynamite is patchwork, assembled from whatever talent is available. A tournament for a new title belt is announced. Ahead of its opening round we get the darkest promo we’ve thus far seen from the purest babyface in the company’s short history…
April 8, 2020
Cody sits ominously at a table, in a pitch black room, and lights a cigar… just as he’d done before when laying out his machinations against Kenny Omega for control of Bullet Club.
Cody:
"Why do I wanna be TNT Champion? Wrestling is so linear you're gonna hear the same answer to that question over and over again. You'll even hear the announcers strike some of the same hyperboles as they describe the stakes. The wrestlers will give you that real wrestling school, paint by numbers interview where they say things like --- you see: β€˜The boys in the back.' Or my favorite: They perpetually say their own name or the person they're wrestling against or the person who's interviewing them over and over again. Like I said, wrestling is linear. They might even do the – [Cody gestures around his waist where a belt would be worn] - that thing. You see, where you pantomime, where you indicate that you want the belt. I've done it a thousand times. We've all done it, we're all guilty. Wrestling is linear. But these are not linear times, are they? I think we'd all give our last dollar for a little bit of normalcy, a little bit of linear. It's my personal hope that we get through this just fine. We wanna live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery, right?
So why do I need to become champion? It is not the fame. It's certainly not the added money. It's not the specialized lower third that they put on the screen. It's not even my specific, unique circumstance of trying to carry a last name that is worth 58 years in gold. It's much simpler. It's because I don't wanna lose. AEW has four major pay per views: Double Or Nothing, All Out, Full Gear, Revolution and I'm 50/50 and I have felt lost and I don't ever want to lose again…The motto, the expression, what the Nightmare Family means, it's sitting at the side of my neck is when we say: DO THE WORK! It's not: Do the work and lose.
And this tournament is flush, it's rich in talent. Take Colt Cabana. Probably the second most experienced guy in the tournament. Does a better flip, flop and fly than me, Dustin and Bully combined. Ask anybody in any locker room the world over – they'll tell you they love Colt Cabana. Well frankly: I do not trust a wrestler that doesn't have any enemies.
Kip Sabian… and that hellfire fiance of his… What happens when those two cohabitate? They’re either gonna motivate themselves upwards or they're gonna drag themselves down to Complacency City, right next to Β‘Jobber Avenue.
Darby… I feel like I handpicked Darby. He's clearly the fastest rising star in all of wrestling in any company, hands down. He's putting on weight by the day, he's assassin quick. But Darby is a freshman on the varsity squad. I don't think he has the mental aptitude to finish this tournament.
My oldest friend… Shawn Spears. My former tag team partner, kind of my Dick Murdoch. Could be a world champion pretty much anywhere he wanted to be. But Shawn Spears is Β‘King Boo-Boo Face and he will mentally defeat himself before we ever even lock up…
Every one of those guys, they want to be TNT Champion. The difference with me: I NEED IT!
It was an outright heel promo, preceding his entry into the tournament which he ultimately won, facing Jake Roberts’ client – Lance Archer – in the finals. Cody is the conquering hero he always aspires to be, and he rattles off five straight title defenses in five weeks. Someone’s not very impressed, however.

Cody stands with Arn in the ring, congratulating himself on the recent string of victories against… let’s say, less than impressive competition.
Onto the stage charges Eddie Kingston, who’s heard enough:
"No, no, no, we're gonna get this right, we're gonna do this real quick. Cody, you talk about grinding, you talk about living this rough life, all that jazz. No one's gonna 'out-grind' you, all that stuff. My man, it's easy to say that when you grew up around used-to-be legends like Arn Anderson. Yeah, you heard me. Keep shooting murder-ones at me and I'll knock your jaw right off your face, partner. You know what I grew up around? You know what I grew up around? Alcoholics! Junkies! I GREW UP AROUND THAT... AND I HAD TO SURVIVE. I HAD TO GRIND. You couldn't last a day in my shoes, so you don't tell me nothing about grinding. You talk about the sport of pro-wrestling... that's a joke. Because every person you faced has been a child. I am a grown-ass man and I will put you in the ground and smile.
But here's the best part about this whole thing: the guy that you like to mention because you like to be best friends with the boss, Tony Khan… He paid me to show up. And now he's going to pay me to kick your ass and take that championship. Oh yeah, you wanna go? Arn, I swear on my beautiful mother's life, if you don't shut up, I'm gouging your eye out. All right? Let me speak! It's my time now. Real easy, relax, you've had yours. Tony Khan said to me, β€˜Β‘You know what, King? If you want No DQ, man, that's fine by me.. just.. you know.. Cody has to accept.' You have to accept, cause either you're an egg-sucking dog or you're an egg-sucking bitch."
Infuriated that he would be upstaged like this, Cody accepts on the spot. He survives an incredibly violent match and continues on with his title reign.

Mr. Brodie Lee whips Cody’s ass. In just over three minutes, it’s done and his beloved championship is gone. The Exalted One and The Dark Order put a massive beatdown on Cody and he’s carried out on a stretcher… Then they continue attacking him on the stretcher.
Cody disappears for weeks.
September 23, 2020
Brodie spends over a month terrorizing anyone even remotely close to Cody, but he still doesn’t come back until after Brodie beats down Orange Cassidy in a title defense. It’s a surprise attack, which incenses The Exalted One.
Brodie:
"You gotta be kidding me! The audacity of a man, the audacity of you Cody to return like that! You have been gone for five weeks while I’ve been here doing the work, being undeniable! Oh my God, the audacity of you Cody. What kind of man sends another man to do his work? Did you see what I did to Dustin? Did you see what Anna Jay did to Brandi? What kind of man Cody, what kind of man lets his wife post Instagram thirst traps while calling me daddy? What kind of man stays away in a little bubble? A man like you, Cody. But YOU are no man! YOU are a coward!
Mr. Brodie Lee grabs a pair of dog collars and looks into the camera.
Cody, you can run on for a long time, but sooner or later Brodie Lee is gonna cut you down! And I am gonna take this dog collar, Cody, I am gonna wrap it around your neck, I am gonna wrap it around that God-forsaken tattoo! And you, Cody, will have nowhere, nowhere to run and nowhere to hide! You, Cody... You have one week to answer me: Are you a man... Or are you a coward?!"
Two weeks later, Cody reclaims his championship in the first dog collar match in AEW history. He would hold it for only a month until one of the Four Pillars pries it away from him, beginning Darby Allin’s ascension to the main event scene... And sending Cody spiraling into the Codyverse of excess and absurdity.
February 17, 2021 - β€œIt’s a girl!”
Despite a litany of viral media and news segments addressing how excessive and even dangerous pregnancy gender reveals are… Cody and Brandi have theirs live on Dynamite, with full entrance and theme, as well as what still to this day is among the largest pyro displays in the history of AEW. It’s shockingly tone-deaf.
May 12, 2021 – The worst promo in AEW history
Just before the one year anniversary of the George Floyd murder that rattled America and stirred racial dialogue in a manner unseen for decades…
Cody addresses Anthony Ogogo and delivers an all-time terrible promo. I'm not even gonna transcribe it here, it's the most pandering cringe ever.

When AEW returns to touring, all the cheering and adulation Cody was accustomed to at AEW's beginning is gone. His goodwill has completely evaporated. They’re tired of his phony, self-fellating act and want something different.

Still nursing a vicious eye injury incurred at the hands of Kevin Owens on WWE programming the previous October, Malakai Black posts on Instagram a video of him in a mental institution where he's been locked up for 5 years, coincidentally the same length of time he was in his old company... He viciously attacks and kills the doctors and staff.
Walking out, he says "The Devil made me do it."

All over north Dublin from the north city centre to Finglas I see little lads from 12/13 up to early 20s doing laps around the place often without helmets on bikes - sports bikes scooters and anything in between. I’m assuming they’re all robbed. Are they actually cutting chains and disc locks or are they generally picking easy unlocked targets? And is it that easy to start a modern bike without the key?
I want to buy a bike but I’ll be leaving on the street in north Dublin city. I’m wondering if ill still end up getting it robbed after spending a few hundred on locks and alarms.

I really should have used a computer.
Something like 400 locked containers and 140 reclaimers were recorded (I had everything unlocked when I started recording these, so drop tables could be notably different with incomplete artifact and consumable pools.)
Important note, there are 4 types of artifacts. Suit artifacts all share one icon and one databank entry. Every other artifact type (xenotech, unknown, and personal if my memory is correct) has unique icons and databank entries.
Locked containers will always drop a unique icon artifact. Every artifact except for a few of the rarest showed up. (Music box ((the rarest artifact)), melted globe, blown nightlight, silver Lattice and reactive stabilizer never showed up from this source for me.)
Reclaimers have a surprisingly small drop pool. They mostly drop artifacts but can give a large proficiency calibrator or situationally a consumable*. Most often you will get a suit artifact ranging from very good in combat (disruptive overload) to useless (emergency proficiency)
BUT! Reclaimers have a chance to drop the rarest personal type artifacts (music box, melted globe, blown nightlight) so they're very useful for databank completion but a coin flip for actual combat usefulness.

*Reclaimers will give you a consumable instead of an artifact if it doesn't get enough health from you. I haven't nailed the exact value, but I'd guess using it when you have less than 70 integrity (maybe 50 or up to 80) then it can't take enough health from you to make an artifact so you get a consumable. Hopefully a silphium vial.
FINALLY I also recorded 125 Green bed uses, and it spawned bats 46% of the time, so be prepared every time you take a nap.

2023.03.30 18:52 LOTHMT Why does no mark Keeper still feel so awful?

I genuinely hate this character with everything I have. I came back after years of not playing, seeing tainted Keeper and thinking its gonna be the most fun character and that he looks very good...
Issue: He is locked behind an awful character...at least without marks. Awful DPS, 2 hearts (3rd with Hard mode Hush), no wooden nickel, no store key, nothing.
I wish there was a way to play with everything in the game unlocked, without having to go through such bs. I just want to enjoy the game for what it is, not for going - 15 streak with Keeper, even with god runs, all because he has 2 fucking hearts and starts with -2 luck so sometimes I can go 2-3 floors without a single coin pickup.
Please fix this in Vanilla.
Yes mods exist, but I play on Switch, so that's no option.

2023.03.30 18:30 PSSRDavis Bows are kind of boring/ in a boring state right now. (Big read)

Note: This is from a PvP perspective. I play on PS5.
I use bows religiously. They're my #1 favorite weapon. I'm that guy who'll take a bow into pvp even though I know I'm gonna get curb stomped by a player equipped with the god rolled immortal. I'm an average player; Maybe a smidge above average. Every season, the first thing I look for is new bows. I love 'em. Idc.
but...
Not gonna lie they kinda boring right now. I'm not saying they're bad. Just... boring. Nothing ever changes! Ok let me explain and try to get my thoughts out there. I'm really curious about what you guys think. Big wall of text.
1). The problem:
I feel as if you're always looking for the same exact roll with the same exact stats for the best feeling, well rounded bow. You don't want something that feels too slow, but if it's too fast then you're likely going to run into an accuracy problem. So, with that being said for lightweights (which just kinda suck across the board, but more on that later) you're going to want to maximize your accuracy without screwing with your draw time too much. With compound, you naturally have higher accuracy so you're trying to decrease that draw time. Regardless of what you like, Archers Tempo is pretty much where it's at. It's a perk that you just can't go wrong with. It literally lowers your TTK. The difference (in feeling) between a bow with AT and without is night and day. If the bow doesn't have Archer's Tempo, then you're probably looking something like Surplus + a Damage Perk, or Opening Shot + Damage.
The next stat that makes a world of difference is the Reload stat. It also directly affects your TTK. In my opinion, a fast draw time with a shit reload might as well cancel each other out. But luckily you have reload mods for that so it's not really an issue unless you don't want to slot those. Lastly you have your handling. It's the same as any other weapon. nuff said. If you're cracked and can hipfire like a boss, then you may care a little less about high handling. So, with all that being laid out you're typically gonna go for something like this for a good feeling well rolled bow.
Lightweights: Natural String, Fiberglass Arrow shaft, Archer's Tempo, Some kind of accuracy perk, Accuracy/Draw Time masterwork.
Compound: Elastic String, Fiberglass Arrow Shaft/Compact Arrow Shaft, Archers Tempo, some kind of damage perk. Draw time/handling masterwork.
So that's a very loose guideline on a decent feeling bow. I'm someone who experiments a lot with a ton of different combinations, and I always find myself drifting back toward these kinds of rolls. They're just consistent. Consistency is key when it comes to bows. If you miss the first shot, you're screwed! This is why lightweights have such a huge focus on accuracy, and simultaneously the reason with they suck! It doesn't matter how fast a bow is if you can't hit anything with it! To make matters worse, they require you to hit TWO headshots for a kill vs 1 headshot 1 body with compound. There's very little wiggle room for lightweights. There's a reason why compound is widely preferred. It's because they do more damage and have far fewer drawbacks. The only lightweight I like, and surprisingly I think it's also one of the better (not best) PvP bows, is Tripwire Canary. Enhanced AT +Enhanced Opening shot + ambush origin trait makes the bow feel really good. It only feels good because it reliably hits shots more than other lightweights, but still less than a compound.
The last bit I wanna touch on is just maps and effective ranges. Specifically, lightweights. Where tf are these supposed to fit in? It's like bungie doesn't realize that almost every other weapon is WAY better and WAY more reliable at the same intended range that lightweights are meant for.
2). Perks:
Now I wanna talk about other perks and why I think they're boring. 1st and 2nd column are all the same on every bow. There might be some outliers, but for the most part they're pretty much all the same for every. single. bow. It doesn't change much. I'm sure that can be said for most guns, but i've seen plenty of guns not roll with certain perks in those two columns. Sometimes they even get new stuff like Seraph Rounds! Starting with the 2nd column. For guns, you have ricochet rounds, High Caliber Rounds, Armor Piercing Rounds, etc. Those traits (while extremely minimal) do a little something extra. Bows don't get that. Arrow heads don't pierce, ricochet, do extra flinch, etc. They just exist. In the 3rd and 4th column you have perks that I divide in to primarily two categories: perks that "make bow feel good", and perks that "make bow hit hard".
Bow's already hit hard. 151 damage to the head on compound, and 130 for leightweights. If you're going with a perk that makes your bow hit hard, the only one worth the slot IMO is swashbuckler. The rest don't allow you to one shot with ease like swash does, and if you can't 1 shot then why choose a damage perk in the first place? You already hit hard enough to cleanup a target. The the thing with swash though is that it's a backend perk so you're really playing around snagging a melee kill (which isn't really too hard) by aiming for the head with the first shot and chucking a ranged melee as you dip behind cover. It works, and I do it. I just have to be deliberate with how I play. I find the current ecosystem of frontloaded damage perks (lookin' at you Target Lock) or weapons with a default sub .7 ttk + any other damage perk to be significantly better.
In regard to perks that "Make bow feel good", you're gonna go for Archer's Tempo, Surplus, Opening Shot, Eye of The Storm, Explosive Payload, and Successful Warmup. Personally, I don't like successful Warmup because it only works after a kill, but this perk is really dope for PvE. The other perks are great because they help you IN the fight, and not afterwards. That's what bows need. Help IN the fight. If I didn't mention other perks, it's probably because I forgot or just think they're more suited for PvE. Headstone and Dragonfly are cool though if you thats what you rock with. Regardless, all of these perks do much of the same thing. Improve accuracy or speed. Personally, I think Bows need something unique.
3). The solution (?):
I put a question mark in there because well... idk what the solution really is. Bows are 1 step away from being OP. Bungie has included a weapon that can't be changed too much without being OP. You can't touch bow damage or else you'd have a real problem it encroaching on Sniper Rifles, Special Linears, and every primary in the game. It'd be a nightmare! Again, at this point I want to reiterate that I don't think bows are bad. Just boring. Every new bow does the same thing as every old bow. From the first bows being Subtle Calamity and Arsenic Bite, every legendary bow has been the exact same... well maybe except for Hush. I miss Hush.
I think the solution lies in Column 2. Now this is just an idea... but make arrow heads do some quirky shit. Wishender has Broadhead that pierces. I like that. I think it's dumb that it's an "exotic" perk when regular guns can have armor piercing but hey... at least it does something different, and I like that. Make an arrowhead that splinters into a caltrop to slow people who step on em. Make an arrowhead that does some sonar stuff if it hits a wall for a split second. Make an arrowhead can ricochet to a bodyshot for 33% of normal body shot damage. I'd say make a rapid-fire arrowhead like some Legolas type shit, but idk how you'd balance that lol. It would be cool AF though.
Now none of these are legitimate solutions. Just examples to get you guys thinking about something in the direction of utility instead of damage or ttk reducing perks. Basically, what I'm getting at is: Give bows some kind of perk that provides utility via the arrowheads and not damage. I suppose all the cool utility stuff has been exclusive to the exotics but damn that really sucks for the legendary variants.

2023.03.30 18:07 SlickVerglas Friends taking advantage of fawning (they don't mean to) to live at my brand-new house free for nearly 1 year

Basically, what the title says. I'm miserable and I could use some advice from people with brains wired like mine.
Here are the players in this shit situation:
1) me. victim of significant emotional abuse/trauma. primary responses are fawn, freeze, flee in that order. There's basically no fight in me because I've always had to direct my resources to staying out of the way or pleasing an abuser to survive. Introvert. Health-wise, my mental health is a wreck this year but I'm physically ok. I find it hard to describe my personality in anything other than coping mechanisms because I've been in a coping state for as long as I can remember lol.
2) my husband. Likely an ADHD sufferer. Extrovert who values friendship extremely highly. Very forgiving and understanding as a person by nature, and highly empathetic. Healthy all around but getting more uncomfortable slowly.
3) my husband's best friend. Diagnosed ADHD and generally nice guy. Has been known to be slightly sensitive about issues involving respect, loyalty or boundaries I think (at least that was my impression of the last few conflicts within the friend group). Has some chronic pain from previous medical incidents, unfortunately.
4) my husband's other close friend (#3's partner). Not sure if neurodivergent, but definitely in general gets the vibes and is chill. My impression of her is that she takes things very in stride for the most part, but stress can bubble over and kick her ass. Has chronic illness, unfortunately.
The situation:
In early 2022 these friends (who at the time lived far away from us) asked us to pet sit for them while they would be out of town for 1-2 months. At the time, we lived in a very very small place with 4 cats of our own and were leery, but understand that it's hard to get by without a support network, so said tentatively yes.
As that month neared, I happened to lose my job but also bought our first house! It was bought totally with 1 income during a rough market so I'm immensely proud. My apartment was miserably small and the house is 2.5x the size, which is incredible.
The same week we got the keys, these friends got kicked out of their rental unit somewhat unexpectedly (they had some notice but I guess plans fell through in some way...?) We helped them frantically pack at the last minute and out of desperation, brought all their stuff to our new house in the middle of the night. To put it into perspective, I'd only had the keys about a week and a half at this moment. their stuff was the first stuff to enter my new home and fill up a room. This also included them towing a project car to my new house, and moving all their frozen foods in ice chests, things like that. They had a storage locker but couldn't access it because the facility had closed that day. We ran trips back and forth literally all night using all our vehicles to rescue their belongings.
They stayed in our apartment (not the new house) with us for I think 2-3ish weeks? (maybe more, this is all a stress blur) and did help us pack up our stuff, though they were gone on their big trip by the time the actual moving and loading started.
Then they went on their trip and we had their cat (who is loud and destructive! i wasn't aware... my cats can be bad but she really tries my patience. she yowls all night most nights, scratches door frames really deeply, pees and poops in unexpected places and has destroyed or risked damage to a few important items to me so far...)
After around 2 months, friend 3 came back, but friend 4 was stuck at their trip destination due to some paperwork issues with her home country. (international travel). Not sure how to resolve this, we didn't really have much of a discussion with friend 3 about next steps besides waiting for friend 4 to come back. I was (i think wrongly) assuming that friend 3 would be apartment-hunting and hopefully/probably have a place to take friend 4 that was not my house when she eventually got back, but I don't think that was friend 3's intention at all, looking back. He stayed with us for close to 3 months before his partner arrived and in that time, I don't think he was working or house shopping.
In this same time span, I started juggling 4 freelance jobs to stay afloat, then locked down a new full-time job and slowly started winding down on the freelance work because it was exhausting me. We are still a single-income household while my husband finishes school and our mortgage and utility bills alone take around 40% of my income, so we are not exactly living large.
Finally, friend 4 got here and after a few weeks, I worked up the courage to kind of ask (very generally and politely) how their big life plans are going, how we can support, etc. They seemed in a hurry so I might not have picked the right moment but the gist I got was that they had no jobs and no house prospects due to lack of jobs. This is something I was 100% unaware of previously. I assumed they had some kind of income stream that was just not obvious to me, since they had been surviving seemingly fine in their last home. I was stunned to realize that it would take a minimum of 3 months (pay stubs and stuff, right?) to get them into a new place. But still, after talking to my husband, we decided to be as understanding as possible out of respect for the friendship and for a bad situation.
Jump forward to now. friend 4 has been here for almost 5 months. friend 3 has been here around 7. (not counting the first few weeks they stayed at our old place.) We've had their cat for around 9. I'm fucking miserable.
They are not terrible guests, but they have become roommates, except they do not pay rent. (They do occasionally hand us a random wad of cash for electricity or out of random kindness-- this has totalled $1100) What I mean is that they are VERY comfortable, which is both flattering (since it means they find my space welcoming) but also frustrating, for obvious reasons. They are the only ones to use my guest bathroom, yet it is always dirty and unwelcoming to my other guests. They use all my dishware (which is fine) but I keep finding more and more pieces damaged from being used with the wrong utensils or at the wrong temperatures or cleaned with unsafe techniques for the materials. Their cat and one of my cats are in a literal pissing match and have destroyed the carpets in my biggest room because they each keep trying to mark over the other. Their project car took one of the best/only parking spots so I've had to park blocking in someone or on my lawn, and at one point had to pay a tow truck because the lawn was so wet, I got stuck. If they need to do laundry, they'll just take mine out of the washer (still wet) and swap theirs in. They grocery shop in bulk so my fridge and freezer are so packed I can barely shop for myself. Little things that would not necessarily have bothered me and aren't really a big deal objectively currently infuriate me because I am so massively overwhelmed by not having complete privacy or freedom in my space.
Since the moment this arrangement started, I've felt like that exhausted/grumpy/sick/stressed phase at the end of a party when I want everyone to leave and it won't go away. I'm so depressed, I can't engage in any of my hobbies except in random bursts maybe once every other month. I can barely keep the house clean and no one else tries to beyond doing a few dishes.
My husband chatted with them recently and asked for a hard date. I wasn't present for the conversation but it seems like the date was set for early June, which will be the 1 year point since they started staying in our apartment, and my second birthday in the new house. But I don't think that's a real promise since it requires 3 months of paystubs to get a new place, right? And to my knowledge they are still not yet employed... To my understanding, because they experience chronic pain / illness they are looking very specifically for remote work and it's a competitive job market experiencing low hire rates right now.
How do I make them go sooner or at least for sure by that date without ruining a friendship that is very valuable to my husband (and important to me as well) and in a way that is not going to give me a stress aneurysm? Is there some magical neurotypical-masking way to be like "I cannot mentally handle the strain of you in my space anymore but it's not a slight against you as people" that doesn't sound stupid or dramatic and won't get me side-eyes from the friend group? I think a lot of people (especially neurodivergents like us) take "i'm overwhelmed and need you gone" as "i hate you and this is your fault for being terrible" which is not my intent here. I just want to express a firm boundary and request to have my space and home back without triggering anyone's rejection dysphoria or causing a conflict.
(For context, this is actually the 3rd time something like this has sort of happened with this friend group and last time I rejected someone staying with us, it turned into a whole Thing where we got sort of quietly frozen out by that friend for a while. The first person who overstayed was just in a bad situation with us and he wasn't treating my family very respectfully, which, of course, I understand because they suck, but my mom in a random state of actually being reasonable asked that we have him leave and I complied because it was wayyyy too tight in our living situation anyways. The second time, a friend overstayed by around 2 months in our small apartment and stole $~700 of video games from us, which we were emotionally recovering from when the first guy wanted to come crash again so we said no. The current friends in our home have always been very kind to us so we did not anticipate overstaying becoming A Thing...)

Quick background first:
Moved alone to the country I'm currently living in a few years back in my early 20's, received financial help from my parents since then, and couple years ago received a diagnose that, unbeknownst to my knowledge, allowed me the state's financial aid and participation in a bunch of activities that have since helped me greatly. I'm considerably more independent than I ever was, and I hold a job for almost a year now at a rehabilitation center.

I met my roommate in one of those government projects. Great, charismatic guy that came from a less-than-favorable childhood (his birth dad is currently in prison) and got adopted to some pretty great step-parents (amazing mom, father passed away recently). I went through some pretty bad trauma too, so we bonded fast, quickly going to each other's houses and talking every other day.

He had money problems though. An ex-wife and a child, and huge debts from the time with her. Recently, discovered they all came from loans he used to take to pay for present and trips for both of them.

Before we moved in, he told me this story about this inheritance he had, and that he just needed to pay some taxes and very soon he would have all the money that he needed. He would be able to pay all his debts, all the money he borrowed from his parents, yada yada. I believed him, being the pushover I was (and still am sometimes, gotta be careful of that!), and lent him money. I took loans just to help him, and emptied all of my bank account.

Last month or so, after I had recovered from all this financial mess and just wanted to finish the contract I had and get out, I checked my bank account to see it was almost empty. I quickly glanced through, and found out three checks that were deposited, to my roommate's account, without my permission. Craziest thing was, because they were deposited through the bank app, I had pictures of them. And they were written by him. With a signature that wasn't mine.

Oh, I got mad. Started yelling and crying, said I was gonna call the police, his mom, the landlords, and I-don't-know-what. He didn't want any of that. Said he would lose his daughters custody, and would hurt himself if I did anything. So, a made a deal with him.

I made him sign a check, for me, with all the money he had taken and I had lent him, up to this point. I told him he was gonna leave the house until the month's end, and I was gonna deposit the check, and no one would know anything. But I don't want that. I want him to leave, and instead of depositing his check, I want to call the cops, tell his mom about everything, and inform the landlords, not before switching the house locks and keys.

So, AITA? For not honoring the deal I made with him, and instead of being quiet and getting my money, telling everyone about everything? Honestly I don't even know if he's gonna leave, so worst comes to worse I'll just leave myself...

2023.03.30 17:56 kszaku94 If Doom (2016) was a manifesto, then Doom Eternal is a revolution

I see Doom Eternal's discourse coming back, and this time I'd like to chip in my two (or more) cents.
In my view, Doom is not just a series of fun FPS games to "switch your brain of and enjoy some podcast or other shit" (yes, you would be shocked how many people play games that way). It is profoundly revolutionary series in gaming history. Doom introduced many, many innovations that today's gamers take for granted - gold standard for FPS games, internet play, modding - just from the top of my head.
Doom itself was expanded version of previous id Software's FPS game - Wolfenstein 3D, but with better graphics engine (allowing for more complex level geometry), and more ultra-violence in mids of video games moral panic. You could say, that Doom was a revolution responding to Wolf3D's manifesto.
I consider Doom 3 to be a revolution as well, but more for its technical side. Id Tech 4 was one of the first game engines with dynamic lighting.
Doom from 2016 was a response for a tide of cover based modern military first and third person shooters. It re-introduced its fast paced, movement based and aggressive gameplay. It asked players to stay on the move, and get close and personal with demons. It also started a wave of imitators, which I am glad for - I like many of games that were obviously inspired by id's 2016 smash hit.
Id software could just make more of the same... Or they could start another revolution. We all know what happened next.
Traces of Doom Eternal gameplay loop could be found in many games, not only in Doom 2016, but since my thesis hinges upon this game being "the manifesto", lets examine that. I've noted, that while playing Doom I've quickly learned that some weapons work on specific enemy types better than on the others. Granted, there is still ridiculously overpowered Super Shotgun (especially after upgrades), but on the higher difficulties game becomes way easier when you realize, that it is simply better to keep weaker enemies alive for glory/chainsaw kills, while abusing stagger states and more powerful weapons against greater threats. If you look up high skill Doom gameplay you'll see just that.
But Doom Eternal does not kindly asks you to play on high skill level, it fucking demands it from the get-go. You either teach yourself how to play in a most satisfying, rewarding and fun way possible, or you wont progress to the second stage, simple as that. And I cannot express enough, how refreshing it is to experience AAA game that does not give shit whether you like it or not. And to DE's credit, it gives you plenty of opportunities to learn its systems. It locks you in tutorial arenas, which is not the most elegant solution, but it lets you to experience the mechanic in a safe way. It does not overwhelm you with all of them, but it expects you to pick them up as you progress through the campaign.
All of that is great, but it does not end there. Doom Eternal teaches you to pick up similar mechanics in other games. I've noticed my skill getting better, especially with using the stagger states in enemies. Doom Eternal visibly influenced many other games, Shadow Warrior 3 for instance has more in common with DE than any of its predecessors.
People who complain that Doom Eternal is a bad follow up, or not a real Doom Game like to hyper fixate on one specific element, like platforming, necessity of weapon switching, Maruder, etc, or give general "this game limits my options, and does not allow playstyle I like the most". Truth is, every game must, to some extend, limit you to a specific playstyle. Classic Resident Evil titles do not allow you to just blow up every enemy, you must conserve your ammo and healing items. Tactical FPS games like classic Rainbow Six do not allow you to run and gun, you must move carefully and slice the pie when moving around the corners. In Command & Conquer you cant just nuke enemy base from the start, or produce the best units - you must collect resources and reach necessary tech level by building up your base while producing less advanced units to defend from incoming attacks. You won't win any duel in Tekken by spamming your favourite attack. And you'll be crushed in Doom if you don't play aggressively or stay still.
In the end, your imagination is not constrained by limitations - thee limitations are key to coming up with new ideas.
