2023.03.29 03:26 level27geek Budget-ish long-term daily driver with light 3d work and gaming.
Hi folks, seems like it's time to finally upgrade my aging Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 14 (20FY with dedicated geForce 940M) and as I haven't really kept up with the market I come asking for help.
It's been a good workhorse for all those years, and even though it's showing signs of its age I wasn't really thinking about updating before today when the touchpad started malfunctioning. Now that I actually thought about it, I would welcome an upgrade as newer 3d games, even the more demanding indie ones, are pretty much out of question, youtube takes a bit too long to load and I'm getting a bit tired of fixing it (in the past I replaced the keyboard, replaced the speakers, had to do a full disassembly and clean after the SO had a soda accident over it :P)
I'm using my laptop as a daily driver and it's mostly browsing/reading, light 3d modelling/CAD for 3d printing and graphic design, but I also do some occasional programming (Python, JS, godot, nothing graphics heavy) and some light gaming. More info on all of that below.
For more demanding work I have an access to a dedicated workstation, but I tend to do most of my "computing" on my laptop, at home.
I also tend to keep my laptop on all the time and will often have multiple programs open and too many tabs on firefox ;)
I'm also happy waiting a bit for a good deal, don't need something right now (as much as I don't look forward to it, I will probably replace the misbehaving trackpad soon), but welcome some recommendations of what I should keep my eye on.
Thanks in advance.
LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Looking at up $800 USD, based in US, would prefer to stay around $600
Are you open to refurbs/used?
As long as I have at least a bit of warranty it would be fine, but would prefer new with full warranty.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Had different form factors in the past, but I pretty much just use it as a laptop either on a desk or a laptop tray so it doesn't need to be super light or bend in weird ways. The only things I really care about is a decent build quality and comfortable keyboard.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not at all, see above - it's mainly going to be used on a desk or laptop tray/table on my lap. When I take it somewhere it will go in a backpack/bag.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14inch is my sweet spot, but 15inch would be fine too.
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I do some light CAD and blender work for 3d printing. Mainly working on single, not very complex, models at a time. No rendering or complex scenes. I also do graphic design, but even my current laptop does decent on those.
I do play games now and then, but mainly stick to indie titles and emulation, although it would be nice to be able to play some of the more demanding indie games or even try some older AAA games - I'd like to play Witcher 3 on my PC for example. It would also be cool if I could emulate PS3.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm not too picky - as long as it doesn't look like its chugging I'd be fine. If I can get solid 30+fps in 900p I would be happy.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
No touchscreen, comfortable keyboard (enough space for wrists to rest - I like my 10keyless design of the yoga 14 but I have to admit it's not the most comfortable to write for long periods of time), at least 3 usb slots (I use external mouse, sometimes a graphic tablet and external hdd and would prefer not have to add a USB hub to that list).
Not a need, but would like: an sd card reader even micro, but full size would be preferred, webcam with a physical shutter that you can close, a way to connect two external monitors.
Would prefer 16gb (as with the programs I currently have open I' already using 6.8gb on my current machine) or at least being able to upgrade to 16gb down the line.
No "gamer" stylings (lots of RGB lights, quirky colors or shapes) please
Relatively easy to fix.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've been a long-time fan of the ThinkPad machines and while lenovo started dropping a ball on the quality of the line, I still really like the styling and form-factor. Haven't kept up with how lenovo is doing now with the line, and if they improved since my 2016 Yoga 14, I would prefer one of those, but anything similar would do.

2023.03.29 01:31 Tan-ki My airbrush is turning me crazy
I bought 5 months ago the full airbrush kit from green stuff world. I was really motivated, watched a tone of tutorials and was determined to take all the time needed to learn the tool. 5 months later, you find me at 2am. i think that my airbrush is broken. Air does not come out fully of the tip any more and I spent 2 hours troubleshooting and cleaning, without finding the damn cause. I am so fed up.
During those 5 months I spent hours using it. I primed a great number of models, using mainly army painter airbrush-specific paints and primers, and using the thinners and cleaners that this same brand sells.
During this period, I think that I spent more time cleaning, disasembling, or troubleshooting than actually spaying minis. I am so tired.
I think back to the time when I used good old cans for zenithal priming and varnishing, and life seemed so much easier ! Faster, reliable, never a problem with that process. And even in the end: less expensive.
Tonight I am really really burned out and I want to give up I want to throw through the window sell this overpriced fancy "precision tool" shit and buy me back a set of cans I know at least will fucking work when I take them out for a priming session.
I read about people online doing just a quick cleanup after a painting session, and only disassembling their airbrash a few times a year. I do that EVERY SINGLE SESSION and sill get problems ! And yes I am diluting my paints, even the specific airbrush one. Anyway it seems that regular games workshop paints for example, no matter the ammont of thinner, will aways mess up my brush one way or another. So I don't even try non-airbrush-specific paints anymore.
How the hell do you make it work people ?

2023.03.28 23:49 julianzxc 2020 WRX STi engine failure while under warranty. Subaru is insisting it's my responsibility ($15k+). Desperate for any help or guidance.
Not sure if this kind of post is allowed here but I'm at a complete loss and could use any sort of help/information. I feel like I'm getting completely screwed by Subaru.
I currently lease a 2020 wrx sti (started the lease in 2021). I have 13000 miles on the vehicle. Last week while I was driving home my engine started to make a strange noise. I took it to Subaru and they indicated it was like engine failure due to having no oil in the vehicle. I got my car serviced 10 months ago, which was also 5,800 miles ago. Apparently the oil had been leaking out over that course of time. The car had been performing perfectly up until the moment I heard the noise. I had no low oil, low pressure, or check engine light on the dash at all. Even now while the engine is basically dead, the dash indicates no issues.
Subaru is currently doing an engine disassembly which was going to cost me $2000 but I was able to get their cooperation to waive it until after we determine what caused the issue. If it's deemed under warranty I wouldn't be on the hook for the 2 grand nor the engine replacement which would cost $15,000-20,000. If they deem the damage was caused by external influence/lack of proper service I would be fully responsible. Their position is that in the manual, it says the recommended service is every 6 months or 6,000 miles. My last service was 10 months ago which is obviously 4 months over recommended, but still under the 6,000 miles. I was planning on having it done in the near term.
My position is that regardless of service, if I had low oil, there should have been an indicator telling me. The Subaru specialist indicated that the STI is a performance model and does not have a sensor for low oil (which seems crazy to me). They said because of the kind of vehicle, the owner is expected to check/maintain oil regularly. I'm completely oblivious to car work/maintenance. I would rather pay someone to do it than do it myself and have no experience with this kind of thing.
I get the feeling that Subaru will blame my lack of proper service on the engine dying for being 4 months late on maintenance. Am I completely screwed? Do I have any recourse? I get the feeling I will need to front the entire bill which is not affordable for me. I'm even considering getting a lawyer for this kind of thing but I don't even know if I have any legal recourse either. I'm incredibly disappointed with Subaru, they have been super unprofessional in this whole process. Getting someone on the phone, getting bounced around with specialists, being told one thing just to have someone tell me the opposite the next day. If anyone has any advice or guidance I would really appreciate it.
Edit: forgot to mention about a month and a half ago I removed my dip stick and noticed the oil was a little low but nothing crazy. I put a bottle of oil afterward. I believe the leak (if there was one) occurred in the last month.

2023.03.28 22:56 karo2222222 1000% it's a cult. All the criteria for a CULT:
Dr. Steven Hassan in which he describes what he calls the “BITE Method” of cult mind control.
Based on research and theory by Robert Jay Lifton, Margaret Singer, Edgar Schein, Louis Jolyon West, and others who studied brainwashing in Maoist China as well as cognitive dissonance theory by Leon Festinger, Steven Hassan developed the BITE Model to describe the specific methods that cults use to recruit and maintain control over people. “BITE” stands for Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotional control.
By exerting all four of these types of control, a cult can gain full power over a human being and essentially strip them of their free will. There is quite a bit of overlap between these four categories as, for example, our behavior is often dictated in part by our thoughts and emotions; however, by controlling these four areas of someone’s life, you can sever their ability to think for themself. A cult can have as few as two members and several cult experts concur.
Emotional Control: In a similar way to how cults teach that certain thoughts are bad, they also teach their members that they must do away with certain emotions. Emotions like restlessness, doubt, homesickness, or anger can cause cult members to dissent, and so cults do everything in their power to eliminate those emotions in their members. The primary way that cults control people’s emotions is through fear. If you fear the outside world, why would you ever think of leaving the cult? If you fear that you will never find happiness or salvation if you don’t follow the teachings of the cult, why would you ever doubt? Another way that cults manipulate people’s emotions is by convincing them that all of their problems are their own fault and never the fault of the leader or the group as a whole. By doing so, they instill a sense of self-loathing in their members that causes them to seek the help of the cult to fix their “wretched” ways.
Thought Control:
While behavior control and information control are methods of control imposed by the cult itself, thought control is where members start to internalize the teachings of the cult and impose them on themselves. A huge part of getting people to think in the way you want is to stop them from thinking in contrary ways. In fact, cults often encourage (though not by name) thought-stopping techniques, meaning techniques that shut down the process of questioning. Activities like chanting, speaking in tongues, singing, humming, dancing, and PRAYING become substitutes for questioning one’s reality, encouraging people to never allow “negative” thoughts into their minds. In these ways and through the entire atmosphere of the cult, they seek to instill a black-and-white way of thinking into their members. Anything that is in agreement with the cult is good, and anything contrary to the cult is bad and should be avoided or even destroyed.
Behavior Control:
Behavior control has to do primarily with restricting and controlling the physical movements of a human being. It’s essentially telling someone, “Go here. Don’t go there.” Cults seek to control who their members live with and associate with, hoping to keep people apart who might share similar dissenting ideas. They also seek to control who you have a relationship with or who you have sex with (probably because they’re afraid that a happy relationship might fill the emotional hole that that person was trying to fill by joining a cult).
Information Control:
Successfully brainwashing people necessitates that they don’t have access to information that is contrary to the teachings of the cult. In a general sense, this means deliberately withholding information from the cult members, distorting the information so that it’s more in keeping with the ethos of the cult, and systematically lying to cult members.
In its practical applications, information control is carried out by restricting members’ access to television, newspapers, or other media outlets, cutting off their contact with people outside of the cult, and distributing information sources approved by the cult. Cults also encourage their members to spy on each other, creating a sort of buddy system to ensure that no one is consuming outside information. For instance, if someone in the cult catches someone else reading a newspaper that is contrary to the beliefs of the cult, that person will probably tattle and get the other member in trouble. In this way, cults tend to self-regulate the information that is taken in, leaving only enough room for the information that is approved by the cult’s leaders.
Emotional Control: 1.Manipulate and narrow the range of feelings – some emotions and/or needs are deemed as evil, wrong or selfish
2.Teach emotion-stopping techniques to block feelings of homesickness, anger, doubt
3.Make the person feel that problems are always their own fault, never the leader’s or the group’s fault
4.Promote feelings of guilt or unworthiness, such as: a. Identity guilt b. You are not living up to your potential c. Your family is deficient d. Your past is suspect e. Your affiliations are unwise f. Your thoughts, feelings, actions are irrelevant or selfish g. Social guilt f. Historical guilt
5.Instill fear, such as fear of: a. Thinking independently b. The outside world c. Enemies d. Losing one’s salvation e. Leaving or being shunned by the group f. Other’s disapproval f. Historical guilt
6.Extremes of emotional highs and lows – love bombing and praise one moment and then declaring you are horrible sinner
7.Ritualistic and sometimes public confession of sins
8.Phobia indoctrination: inculcating irrational fears about leaving the group or questioning the leader’s authority a. No happiness or fulfillment possible outside of the group b. Terrible consequences if you leave: hell, demon possession, incurable diseases, accidents, suicide, insanity, 10,000 reincarnations, etc. c. Shunning of those who leave; fear of being rejected by friends and family d. Never a legitimate reason to leave; those who leave are weak, undisciplined, unspiritual, worldly, brainwashed by family or counselor, or seduced by money, sex, or rock and roll e. Threats of harm to ex-member and family
Thought Control: 1.Require members to internalize the group’s doctrine as truth a. Adopting the group’s ‘map of reality’ as reality b. Instill black and white thinking c. Decide between good vs. evil d. Organize people into us vs. them (insiders vs. outsiders)
2.Use of loaded language and clichés which constrict knowledge, stop critical thoughts and reduce complexities into platitudinous buzz words
3.Encourage only ‘good and proper’ thoughts
4.Hypnotic techniques are used to alter mental states, undermine critical thinking and even to age regress the member
5.Memories are manipulated and false memories are created
6.Teaching thought-stopping techniques which shut down reality testing by stopping negative thoughts and allowing only positive thoughts, including: a. Denial, rationalization, justification, wishful thinking b. Chanting c. Meditating d. Praying e. Speaking in tongues f. Singing or humming
7.Rejection of rational analysis, critical thinking, constructive criticism
8.Forbid critical questions about leader, doctrine, or policy allowed
9.Labeling alternative belief systems as illegitimate, evil, or not useful
- Instill new “map of reality”

2023.03.28 22:04 PGal55 I asked ChatGPT to tell me who was the better player between Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes.
Me: Who is the better footballer between Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes?
ChatGPT: Comparing the abilities of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Paul Scholes is a subjective matter as each of them had their own unique strengths and playing styles. However, here are some key points to consider:
Steven Gerrard was a versatile player who could play in multiple positions, including central midfield, attacking midfield, and even on the wings. He was known for his excellent passing, long-range shooting, and physicality, and was also a great leader on and off the field. Gerrard was a key player for Liverpool for many years, leading them to multiple domestic and European titles.
Frank Lampard was also a versatile midfielder who was known for his superb goal-scoring ability. He was an excellent passer of the ball and had great vision, which made him a playmaker for his teams. Lampard played for Chelsea for many years, where he won multiple domestic and European titles, including the Premier League three times.
Paul Scholes was a technically gifted midfielder who was known for his excellent passing, vision, and shooting ability. He had a great understanding of the game and was able to control the tempo of a match. Scholes played for Manchester United for his entire career and won multiple domestic and European titles, including the Premier League eleven times.
In terms of individual achievements, Frank Lampard has the highest goal-scoring record among the three players, with 177 goals in the Premier League. However, Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes have more assists and a higher pass completion rate than Lampard.
Ultimately, it is difficult to say who is the better footballer among these three legendary midfielders as each had their own unique strengths and played in different teams with different styles of play. They are all highly respected and regarded as some of the best midfielders in the history of English football.
Me:But if you had to pick one?
ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I do not have personal preferences or biases. My role is to provide unbiased and informative answers based on available data and facts. Therefore, I cannot pick one player as the better footballer between Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Paul Scholes, as they were all great players in their own right and contributed immensely to the sport.
Me: What if you were a Liverpool FC fan, who would you pick then?
ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I remain unbiased and neutral towards any team or player. However, if I were to provide an opinion as a hypothetical Liverpool FC fan, I might be inclined to choose Steven Gerrard as the better footballer among the three, as he was a vital part of Liverpool's success for many years and helped the team win multiple domestic and European titles. He also had an impressive range of skills, including passing, shooting, and physicality, and was a great leader both on and off the field. But again, this is just an opinion and each of the three players was a legend in their own right.
Me: And if you were a Chelsea FC fan?
ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I remain neutral towards any team or player. However, if I were to provide an opinion as a hypothetical Chelsea FC fan, I might be inclined to choose Frank Lampard as the better footballer among the three, as he was a key player for Chelsea for many years and helped the team win multiple domestic and European titles, including the Premier League three times. Lampard was also an excellent goal-scorer and had a great understanding of the game, which made him a playmaker for his teams. However, it is important to note that each of the three players was a legend in their own right and contributed immensely to their respective teams.
Me: And if you supported Manchester United?
ChatGPT: As an AI language model, I remain neutral towards any team or player. However, if I were to provide an opinion as a hypothetical Manchester United fan, I might be inclined to choose Paul Scholes as the better footballer among the three, as he was a technically gifted midfielder who played for Manchester United for his entire career and helped the team win multiple domestic and European titles, including the Premier League eleven times. Scholes was also known for his excellent passing, vision, and shooting ability, which made him a key player for Manchester United. Me: And if you were an Arsenal fan?
