The Little Mermaid lives in an underwater kingdom with her widowed father (The Sea-King), her dowager grandmother, and her five older sisters, each of whom had been born one year apart.
When a mermaid turns fifteen, she is permitted to swim to the surface for the first time to catch a glimpse of the world above. When the sisters become old enough, each of them visits the upper world one at a time every 365 days. As each returns, the Little Mermaid listens longingly to their various descriptions of the world inhabited by human beings.
When the Little Mermaid's turn comes, she rises up to the surface, watches a birthday celebration being held on a ship in honor of a handsome prince, and falls in love with him from a safe distance. Then a violent storm hits, sinking the ship, and the Little Mermaid saves the prince from drowning. She delivers him unconscious to the shore near a temple. Here, the Little Mermaid waits until a young woman from the temple and her ladies-in-waiting find him. To her dismay, the prince never sees the Little Mermaid or even realizes that it was she who had originally saved his life.
The Little Mermaid becomes melancholic and asks her grandmother if humans can live forever. Her grandmother explains that humans have a much shorter lifespan than mermaids (300 years), but that they have an eternal soul that lives on in heaven, while mermaids turn to sea foam at death and cease to exist

The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, visits the Sea Witch who lives in a dangerous part of the ocean. The witch willingly helps her by selling her a potion that gives her legs in exchange for her voice (her tongue), as the Little Mermaid has the most enchanting voice in the entire world. The witch warns the Little Mermaid that once she becomes a human, she will never be able to return to the sea. Consuming the potion will make her feel as if a sword is being passed through her body. When she recovers, she will have two human legs and will be able to dance as no human has ever danced before; however, she will constantly feel as if she is walking on sharp knives. Moreover, she will obtain a soul only if she wins the love of the prince and marries him, for then a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries someone else, the Little Mermaid will die with a broken heart and dissolve into sea foam upon the waves.
After she agrees to the arrangement, the Little Mermaid swims up to the surface near the prince's castle and drinks the potion. The liquid feels like a sword piercing her body and she passes out on the shore, naked. She is found by the prince, who is mesmerized by her beauty and grace, even though he discovers that she is mute. Most of all, he likes to see her dance, and she dances for him despite suffering excruciating pain with every step. Soon, the Little Mermaid becomes the prince's favorite companion and accompanies him on many of his outings—but he does not fall in love with her at all.
When the prince's parents encourage him to marry the neighboring princess in an arranged marriage, the prince tells the Little Mermaid he will not because he does not love the princess. He goes on to say that he can only love the young woman from the temple, whom he believes rescued him. It turns out that the princess from the neighboring kingdom was the temple woman, as she was sent to the temple for her education. The prince declares his love for her, and the royal wedding is announced at once.
The mermaid sisters give the knife to The Little Mermaid.
The prince and princess celebrate their new marriage aboard a wedding ship, and the Little Mermaid's heart breaks. She thinks of all that she has sacrificed and of all the pain she has endured for the prince. She despairs, thinking of the death that awaits her, but before dawn, her sisters rise out of the water and bring her a dagger that the Sea Witch has given them in exchange for their long, beautiful hair. If the Little Mermaid kills the prince and lets his blood drip on her feet, she will become a mermaid once more, all her suffering will end, and she will live out her full life in the ocean with her family. However, the Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his new wife, and she throws the dagger and herself off the ship into the water just as dawn breaks.
Her body dissolves into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the warm sun and discovers that she has turned into a luminous and ethereal earthbound spirit, a daughter of the air. As the Little Mermaid ascends into the atmosphere, she is greeted by other daughters, who tell her she has become like them because she strove with all her heart to obtain an immortal soul. Because of her selflessness, she is given the chance to earn her own soul by doing good deeds for humankind for 300 years, and she will one day rise up into Heaven

NBC television series
Main article: Shirley Temple's Storybook
In 1958, NBC began airing a new television show titled Shirley Temple's Storybook, an American children's anthology series that was hosted and narrated by actress Shirley Temple. The series features adaptations of fairy tales like Mother Goose and other family-oriented stories performed by well-known actors. The first season of sixteen black-and-white and colored episodes aired on NBC between 12 January 1958, and 21 December 1958, as Shirley Temple's Storybook. Thirteen episodes of the first season re-ran on ABC beginning on 12 January 1959.[19] The second season of twenty-five color episodes aired on NBC as The Shirley Temple Show between 18 September 1960, and 16 July 1961 in much the same format that it had under its original title.
The show aired their adaptation of The Little Mermaid on 5 March 1961 as episode 22 during the show's second season. Shirley Temple herself played the mermaid. Unlike the original story, the mermaid does not give up her voice to become human, but she still fails to win the prince's heart when he falls in love with the princess who found him. In the end, when she cannot bring herself to kill the prince with the dagger, she prepares to throw herself into the sea. Neptune himself intervenes and says that for her selfless act, she has earned the right to become a mermaid again and rejoin her family, giving the story a happy ending.

Disney's animated film
Main article: The Little Mermaid (1989 film)
Disney's The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated musical fantasy romance film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and distributed by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. Loosely based on the original tale, the 1989 Disney film tells the story of a mermaid princess named Ariel, who dreams of becoming human, especially after falling in love with a human prince named Eric. Written, produced, and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, with music by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman (who also served as a co-producer), the film features the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, and Pat Carroll among others.
The Little Mermaid was originally planned as part of one of Walt Disney's earliest feature films, a proposed package film featuring vignettes of Hans Christian Andersen tales.[20] Development started in the late 1930s but was delayed due to various circumstances.[21] In 1985, Ron Clements became interested in a film adaptation of The Little Mermaid while he was serving as a director on The Great Mouse Detective (1986).[22] Clements discovered the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale while browsing through a bookstore.[23] Believing the story provided an "ideal basis" for an animated feature film and keen on creating a film that took place underwater,[22] Clements wrote and presented a two-page treatment of Mermaid to Disney CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, who approved of the idea for possible development the next day. While in production in the 1980s, the staff by chance found the original story and visual development work done by Kay Nielsen for Disney's proposed 1930s Andersen feature.[20] Many of the changes made by the staff in the 1930s to Hans Christian Andersen's original story were coincidentally the same as the changes made by Disney writers in the 1980s.[23]
In 2023, the 1989 film was adapted into a live-action remake.[24]

The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Denmark
A statue of The Little Mermaid sits on a rock in the Copenhagen harbor in Langelinie. This small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and a major tourist attraction.
The statue was commissioned in 1909 by Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg, after he had been fascinated by a ballet based on the fairy tale. The sculptor Edward Eriksen created the statue, which was unveiled on 23 August 1913. His wife, Eline Eriksen, was the model for the body. Ellen Price, the ballerina who danced the Little Mermaid in the 1909 Royal Danish Ballet production, was the model for the head and face.[25] The statue has been severely vandalized several times.[26]
In May 2010, it was moved from its Copenhagen harbor emplacement for the first time ever, for transport to Expo 2010 in Shanghai, where it remained until 20 November 2010.[27]

2023.06.05 15:22 No-Stress-5285 My vent
My sister (#3) is my 94 year old mother's main caregiver and is paid to do so from my mother's savings and money from the VA. Mom can dress and bathe and feed herself, but her dementia gets worse every time I see her. Sister #3 doesn't like the word dementia and refuses to see mom as person with dementia. We have worked out a schedule where she gets relief from the caregiving most weekends. But the rest of us are not paid for this time. Mom can't afford it even if I wanted to be paid. I drive four hours on Friday to get here and four hours on Monday, once a month, to get home. We have been doing this for about three years.
I have four sisters. About a dozen years ago, sister 4 had an adult temper tantrum and cut everyone in the family out of her life, even our mother who had done nothing to deserve that treatment. My mother even cut her out of the will for awhile. We all told mom that it was her decision, but if she was going to make changes, please don't put sister #4 in charge of anything. Sister #4 apparently had a change of heart several years ago, and made up with sister #3 and through her, got back in mom's good graces. Fine. My mother should have a relationship with all of her children. However, sister #4 has always been the bossy one of the family and for our whole life, has always expected the rest of us to do what she wants us to do. I have many examples of that. She is competent and capable and smart, so her ideas are often good; it is just her bossy attitude that was the problem. She, and sister #3, submitted the VA application without any discussion with the rest of us. And when we found out, they refused to provide us with any information about it. I do believe, and will do so until proven otherwise, that she made a few false statements on the application, but the VA approved it, so either I was wrong or the VA didn't do their due diligence. Sister #4 has made no effort to make up with the other three of us (#1, #2 and #5). This creates a great deal of tension in the family. We are now a broken family.
Sisters #3 and #1 had a big fight a few years ago when sister 1 was with mom, but sister 3 showed up because mom had called her because mom, in her dementia state, didn't recognize sister 1 at that time. This led to sister 1 leaving the house and saying she was not coming back. Sister #5 and I also had various arguments with sister #3, but finally decided that it was detrimental to mom to have those fights. So now, I mostly keep my mouth shut.
Sister #4 now has weak sister #3 in her pocket and now is in control of her which means she is also in control of mom. And sister #4 doesn't care about what the rest of us think.
I have tried to get mom and sister #1 to keep a relationship and so she will visit mom when I am there on my weekend. Sometimes.
I had made plans for mom and me to visit sister #1 on Sunday, yesterday, and told mom about it at multiple times on Saturday. But she woke up Sunday morning in a bad mood and started on her rant about sister #1 which is mostly false, but her dementia takes over and I can never convince her that no, sister #1 does not want your money and no, does not want you dead, and yes, maybe her husband drinks too much maybe he doesn't, but that is not your problem. Then she went looking for her phone list so she could call sister #3 to come over, it seems, to rescue her from me, I guess, or whatever else her demented mind was telling her. I am actually not certain my mother can even make a phone call right now - not sure she would know which buttons to push. But I said to her, if you are going to call sister #3 to come over, then I will go pack my bags and she can take care of you and I will go home. And of course, I started crying which upset her even more. I then gave up on the idea of seeing sister #1 that day and tried to have a good day with her anyway.
Even before her dementia was as bad as it is, my mother will almost never stop talking. She has talking points that she repeats over and over and over. Some are false memories, some have some validity but are not really accurate and I know that the dementia makes this worse than it would be.
I am getting tired of my weekends here. I dread the drive down. When I am here, she doesn't let me help her clean closets or drawers although she complains about having too much stuff. She doesn't have that many hobbies that can occupy her mind. She likes to watch the action on her street when people walk by. Sister #3 is a bit of a hoarder at her own home and has moved some of her overflow into my mom's house which my mother doesn't like. For instance, sister #3 got a good deal on a turkey about five years ago, and it is still in mother's freezer. But even mom will say that she can't stand up to sister #3 since she depends on her.
The five of us have no plan for what to do with mom when she gets worse. I did some looking around at various facilities, but sister #3 just dismissed what I found. Sister #4 probably has plans, but none of the rest of us get to know those plans. And after sister #1 left, mom, with her demented brain, contacted her attorney and changed her power of attorney to include sister #4 as a backup. I am nowhere on any legal documents, probably because I live four hours away.
I often cry on my way home after holding in my emotions. Today, on my way home, I will go by the cemetery and talk to Dad and God. I know the best thing for mom is for me to give sister #3 this respite time, so I will continue, but it is taking a toll on me. I have no doubt that it is taking a toll on sister #3 as well, but I have gotten to the point that I just don't care about her feelings about it. She is a loving daughter and devoted to my mother, so there is not any issue of abuse. But she does not really provide my mother with daily cognitive or physical exercise and I think they spend most of their days watching sister #3s favorite TV shows. She also hates housework and so she bought a robot vac (not sure it was her money or mom's). But doesn't dust furniture. There is a layer on every piece. Yes, I could get out the furniture polish and take care of it and maybe it is petty for me not to do it, but sister #3 is here all the time and is the only one paid for what she provides. It costs me $100 in gas money just to drive back and forth. I also hate cooking at this point in my life, but I often buy food that I want to prepare and I pay for it myself. At this point, it would be difficult for mom to adjust to a facility because of her dementia, but that day is coming and we have no plan for it as a family.
It helps to vent, although I don't think there are any solutions. I am grateful that sister #3 is willing to be mom's caregiver, but am less and less concerned with her own well-being and needs. Our sister problems are not helping mom, but no one wants to try to get along anymore.

2023.06.05 15:04 aina_banana My 2 Cats did not fight when I was out.
I have 2 cats. A male tuxedo dsh, 10 months (Sumo) and a female calico mix maine coon, 5 months (Ahsoka). Ahsoka is new to our household and we've done all the introductions properly. Both of them have been neutered/spayed. They're actually quite okay with each other however we do have seperate rooms for them because Sumo is very rough and will play fight Ahsoka till she screams. Usually when they hang out together is when my fiancé and I are at home. Even thn, we will monitor them quite closely when they're in the same space together because Sumo has history with playing rough especially with our previous foster kitten. We assume its play fighting because Sumo doesnt hiss at her or show any of the indicators tht shows he is angry or territorial but he will always chase her and when he catches her, he will bite her neck and tries to bunny kick her until one of us stops him. He does it so often when she's around but his behaviour with Ahsoka is much better thn with our previous foster because with our previous one, he will chase her the moment he sees her but with Ahsoka, he is calmer and will even walk to her calmly and sniff her and chill before proceeding to chase after her.
Today however, I had to bring my fiancé to the doctor and I have already seperated them into their own space but I think I did not close the door properly because Sumo got out of his space and when we came home, they were both together. And 10 min after we got home, Sumo started playing rough again. When I checked our CCTVS, we noticed that they completely were at peace with each other, no rough housing, no chasing, just doing their own things and chilling nearby each other. I don't understand what is going on. Is there anyone that have faced similar situations?

2023.06.05 13:53 Wtzky Speedrun help for last of us 2
I've been trying to speedrun part 2 now and generally can do most sections pretty well but have been totally stuck on the school section.
In the main hallway before you get to the outside courtyard, I follow Anthony Caliber's method of legging it in to the right hand classrooms. I can get to the outside bit without being shot, but then I hit my issue. Around 60% of the time, only 1 guy jumps down. The second enemy stays up top right where you're climbing and one shot kills you, or even worse goes to the far left and climbs up the section where the three wlfs run down that you run past to get to the roof. If he goes there, there's zero chance of rescuing the run because he sits there shooting at you.
I just can't get any consistency in that section! Is there something that triggers that second guy to head to the rightmost part of the roof to jump down (which is where he seems to always jump down on the speedruns I've seen on YouTube)?? Anyone have any better strats for this section? Or even a safer one that loses a little time?

2023.06.05 13:49 BigDomesticCats Why Is My Maine Coon So Small?
| Have you ever wondered why your Maine Coon cat is smaller than expected? Many factors can contribute to a smaller Maine Coon, and it's essential to understand them to ensure your pet's well-being. Firstly, genetics play a significant role in determining a Maine Coon's size. If your cat comes from a line of more minor parents or has mixed breeding, it may not grow as large as a purebred Maine Coon. It's essential to research your cat's lineage when adopting or purchasing a Maine Coon. Secondly, nutrition is crucial to Maine Coon's growth and development. A diet lacking essential nutrients can stunt your cat's growth and prevent them from reaching their full potential. Be sure to provide your pet with high-quality food and plenty of water to keep them healthy. Lastly, breed standards and expectations can lead to misconceptions about a Maine Coon's size. While most Maine Coons reach an average length of 10-16 pounds, not all will be massive "gentle giants." Some may fall outside the typical size range and still be healthy and happy pets. It's essential to monitor your Maine Coon's weight and overall health regularly. Contact your veterinarian for advice and guidance if you have concerns about your cat's size or growth. Remember that every cat is unique, and size doesn't determine its worth or ability to be a loving companion. Maine Coon is So Small https://preview.redd.it/xam6bs8pt64b1.jpg?width=1159&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58545c60386db6fa03de8450e93a5e8a895c633c Do you have a Maine Coon that seems unusually small compared to other cats of its breed? There could be many reasons why your Maine Coon is so small. Let's explore some of the possible factors that contribute to the smaller size of Maine Coons. First and foremost, genetics play a significant role in determining the size of a cat. Maine Coons that come from more minor parents are likely to be smaller in size. Moreover, if your cat has a genetic defect or mutation, it could affect its growth and development, leading to a smaller size. Another factor that can affect the size of your Maine Coon is nutrition. Adequate nutrition is essential for the proper growth and development of cats. If your cat is not receiving good food, it may suffer from stunted growth, leading to a smaller size. Ensure your cat's diet contains all essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals. Lastly, health problems can also contribute to the small size of your Maine Coon. If your cat suffers from any underlying health issues or diseases, it could affect its overall growth and development, leading to a smaller size. Some common health problems that can cause small size in cats include parasites, infections, and endocrine disorders. Conclusion: If you have a small Maine Coon, don't worry too much. While it may not meet the size standards of the breed, it is still a lovable companion that can bring joy to your life. However, if you are concerned about its size, it is always best to consult with a veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues affecting its size. https://bighousecats.com/why-is-my-maine-coon-so-small/ submitted by BigDomesticCats to u/BigDomesticCats [link] [comments] |
2023.06.05 13:43 BigDomesticCats What is The Biggest Maine Coon Cat?
Many cat enthusiasts consider the Maine Coon breed to be one of the most giant domesticated cats in the world. These cats have a unique appearance and are known for their friendliness, intelligence, and playfulness. However, the one thing that sets them apart from other cats is their size.
The Maine Coon is a giant cat breed, with males typically weighing 13 to 18 pounds and females weighing 8 to 12 pounds. But what is the most significant Maine Coon cat ever recorded? According to the Guinness World Record, the giant Maine Coon cat measured 48.5 inches from nose to tail. This massive cat was named Stewie and lived with his owner, Robin Hendrickson, in Nevada.
While Stewie was the most significant Maine Coon cat ever recorded, there are other Maine Coon cats that come close in size. For example, Scarlett's Magic is a Maine Coon cat that made headlines for being one of the most giant cats in the world. She measured 43 inches from nose to tail and weighed 21 pounds. Another notable big cat is Ludo, who currently holds the record for the most significant domestic cat weighing 35.2 pounds and measuring 44.4 inches.
In conclusion, the Maine Coon breed is known for being one of the most giant cats in the world. While Stewie was the most significant Maine Coon cat ever recorded, there are many other Maine Coon cats that come close in size. If you are looking for a friendly, intelligent, and playful cat that can also be a bit of a showstopper, then the Maine Coon may be the breed for you.
The Biggest Maine Coon Cat
The Maine Coon cat is one of the giant domestic breeds of feline in the world, known for their long and luxurious fur, gentle temperament, and playfulness. The big Maine Coon cat on record is a male named Stewie, who measured an impressive 48.5 inches from nose to tail by Guinness World Records. Stewie weighed over 33 pounds and stood 20 inches tall at the shoulders. Maine Coon cats are often described as "gentle giants" due to their large size yet affectionate nature with their owners.
To put these measurements into perspective, an average domestic cat typically weighs 18 to 24 inches in length and weighs around 8 to 10 pounds. It's incredible that the most significant Maine Coon cat is almost twice the length and more than three times the weight! These cats are a sight to behold, with their big, round paws, fluffy tails, and expressive eyes. They are well-suited to people who have ample space for them to roam, as Maine Coons are a very active breed that enjoys playing and exploring.
Stewie isn't the only big Maine Coon cat out there, however. Several other cats have come close to beating his records, such as Omar from Australia, who measured 47 inches from nose to tail, and Ludo from the UK, who weighed in at a staggering 35 pounds. These cats are often the result of careful breeding between large and healthy Maine Coon cats, and their owners prize them for their affectionate nature and majestic appearance.
If you are considering adding a Maine Coon cat to your family, it's important to remember that these cats require a lot of space and attention. They need to be better suited to apartment living, as they need plenty of room to run and play. However, if you have a spacious home and are looking for a gentle, playful, and loving companion, the Maine Coon cat may be the perfect addition to your family.

Shore leave for the group finally rolled around and so the little gathering rode a shuttle down planetside. Seren, Eira, Scanner, Zana and the seven Bridge Bunny brothers. Claiomh fada, Sciath bhabhta, Casur cogaidh. Saighead direach, Miodog gearr, Dhorn tapaidh, and Blath dearg. Most just referred to them as the Bridge Bunnies as a running gag with the crew and because they tended to do everything together. They were one of the few survivors of a raid and had been forced to fend for themselves for a month before aid would arrive. Ever since they had been practically inseparable. For Conin they were unusually quiet and reserved, except when on the bridge or playing games. When they had learned that Seren was a raid survivor as well they had opened up to him greatly. Of all the crew it was the Bridge Bunnies that empathized the most with the Dynol's struggles to cope with the aftermath of surviving.
Seren had packed some sunscreen and a complete survival kit, much to Eira's chagrin and amusement. "I keep forgetting you Dynol burn so easy." She herself had packed a few things but was keeping them secret. "Five bottles though?"
"Right. Yn Gyntaf Ymhlith y Ser is a hotter world due to a slightly closer orbit to its star. Higher UV index than even my skin can likely handle. So does not hurt to be prepared." he explained as they prepared to disembark.
"The forests provide alot of shade though so you should be fine. Now get ready!" Eira churred in anticipation.
The disembarkation ramp lowered and the shore leave team stepped down into a very bright world.
Seren got to the bottom and nearly got run over by the others as he stood there gawking. "...the screw?" The port itself was enough to cause him to pause. The style was reminiscent of Ancient Earth and the American Wild West with a heavy dose of Victorian England. A mixture of stone, brick and wooden structures. The usually angular straight Llygoden Fawr font adorning shops and signs was more curly, almost like question marks rather than straight or angled lines.
"...the screw?" The mode of dress though was more like the styles of Sixteen-Hundred era Age of Sail. Elaborate dresses and vests, broad collars and adorned hats. Sweeping gowns, snug bodices, and even boots which were a rarity amongst any of the starfaring species other than the Dynol and Rana/Salamandra.
But the real "... the screw?" were the people. At first glance they were your average Llygoden Fawr. That is until it settled in that something was wrong with this picture. The most striking was the tail. It was a fluffy bush to put any Vulpes-Vulpes to shame in its luxurious fullness. The faces were not as long and the eyes were a bit larger than average. The ears too were different, standing up and pointed. "Giant space squirrels... the screw???"
Eira was enjoying Seren's reaction and the others were getting a chuckle from it as well. "ahhhhh! Worth keeping it a secret just to see you phased by something."
"That is an understatement." he admitted as he continued to gawk.
Eira led her companion out of the way of the other visitors and explained. "Mutation. Similar to the splits in the Vulpes. Happened about a hundred years ago and with each generation instances increased ten percent. Some radiation from the sun was the cause, again much like with the Vulpes. There were some other less pleasant birth defects, some lethal, that we had to do extensive genetic screening to cull from the populace. The people now are a stable mutation and have been designated Wiwer Fawr."
"Do not stand outside unprotected long. Got it." He took in the sight and then a huge grin spread as he saw something pulling into a station off in the distance. A train. Or more to the point. A Llygoden Fawr style mono-wheel steam train. And after a bit he saw some of the squirrel folk ride past mounted on what looked nothing so much as a four-legged sparrow head... "Ok. That is something you do not see every day either." A carriage pulled by one of these beasts passed as well not long after that.
"Coesau plu? Yeah. They are native to the homeden and we exported the hardier ones here. We used to ride them in our early civilization stages. The electromagnetic field of the planet during stormy season messes with electronics to the point it was more cost efficient to just transplant the coesau plu and use them as mounts and drays like in olden times." She pointed at the mono-wheel train pulling to the distant station. "And same for the trains. It's like stepping back in time a thousand years."
"I take it the archaic mode of dress is protective?"
"Got it in one. All of a sudden the hat business saw a boom."
Seren glanced around thoughtfully. "If the planet is that troublesome then why colonize it?"
"It is one of the few we have come across with a breathable atmosphere, tolerable environment, and isn't bathed in lethal radiation. And the asteroid belt is big and mineral rich. The land itself does wonders for plant life as you can see." Eira pointed at the tremendous looking forest off to the east from the starport. "Colonists have adapted to an arboreal city structure away from the starport. The giant trees afford extensive protection from the sun." Here the white furred rat woman gave a little shudder. "Wouldn't catch me living way up there!"
"Says the rat girl who lives in a home that is hanging from the ceiling of a cave." So teased the Dynol.
"Hey now. Stone is very safe!"
Seren noted though that the common tricorn-like hats many males wore made sense from a protective design standpoint. The forward point shaded the snout and the back points shaded the ears. He got an explanation from Eira that the clothes also served to bleed off excess heat and had a passive cooling system built into every garment. "So why the archaic dress style?" he questioned.
Eira grinned. "A chunk of the early colonists turned out to be historical re-enactment buffs and since the buildings were less high tech why not have fun with it? The idea caught on and now it's their cultural thing. There is even a recreation of a thousand year old town and surrounding farmsteads further north in the cooler zone."
The Dynol took all this in and smiled more and more. "So what is the plan then?" he asked wile pulling out his silver reflective rat mask and donning it. The mask was treated against UV so was a better choice than his usual blister goggles. "I think we are all going to need at least hats pronto, yes?" Said with a worried glance at Scanner, Zana and the Bridge Bunnies who were all shielding their eyes with a paw as the looked around. "I doubt any of us wants to be holed up in a hotel all week right?"
"Right. There's a hat shop nearby for exactly that and right next door a visor shop. Both accommodate large folk." the Security Tech informed them. But I have something for you first." Here she pulled out a hat that was like a tall sloping hill with the long point in front and just a single short back facing point. Set in it was a white feather. "One of my distant cousins gave me this last visit. Never quite suited my style. But the blue happens to match your usual taste in off duty colors."
Seren accepted the gift and tried it on. "How do I look?"
Eira churrred with pleasure. "mmmmm! With the mask on you look like the Phantom Rider!" We need to get you fully dressed up now!"
"uh-oh!"
Scanner and the others of the party were still busy gawking as they had never actually made planetfall in all the years of being on Patrol. "Well this is different." the grey Backeneko drawled in amusement at the sight of the fluffy tailed Wiwer Fawr and the peculiar architecture.
Zana was looking wide eyed in delight at everything and her fluffy tail was practically vibrating with excitement. "They are so adorable!"
"Miss Zana. Please refrain from terrorizing the countryside hugging everything." Seren deadpanned. Vulpes-Canis were a very touchy-feely people and the large curly haired dog girl was like the poster pup for her species. She liked to just pick up the Dynol and hug him to death, or on coinciding lunch breaks she would sit him in her lap and idly pet him. The other Vulpes-Canis on the Patrol Carrier would do the same. Just not as grabby as the Wraith Pilot. She at least did not handle him while he was working. But she would sit and just raptly watch him work. The big dog folk's fascination with Dynol was well documented.
"Oh come on! I let you go... eventually." was accompanied by Zana's merry barking laughter and wagging tail.
Seren had to admit that the starfighter pilot had the reflexes to back up her rampant people pouncing. She could also beat him eight times out of ten at go-cart racing. "So what's the plan then Eira? You -did- have a plan? Riiiiight?" he nudged the rat alien.
"Sure do. I pre-ordered some steam train tickets to the great northern city of Gaer Garreg Werdd yn y Goedwig. It is a recreation of a fortress city from the homeden that was a major steam hub back in the day. It's now a sort of historical re-enactment with people acting out living the way folk used to." She displayed for all a paper map and traced a claw from the starport to their intended destination. "Big tourist attraction and there's a regular re-enactment of a raid by the Crwydriaid y Mor yn Dwyn Gwaywffyn, sea going aboriginals who raided inland every few years well into our early steam age. Quite a nuisance."
"Australia gets invaded by Hawaii." quipped the Dynol.
"I have no idea what you are referencing. But I know it is something embarrassing!"
They all made haste to the hat shop and it was Seren's turn to be embarrassed at being complimented for his Phantom Rider cosplay. Eira had her own hat as well. A white tricorn with a badge pinned to one side and several short square-ish red feathers sticking out back of it. "This is my dad's hat. He used to live here for a few years before getting his hauler gig."
"What is the badge for?" Asked one of the Bridge Bunnies.
"Ah that was for rescuing some folk who got lost in the deep forests. Dad was a pretty good tracker." Eira explained while tracing a finger round the brass badge. "The feathers represent how many people he saved. Six total."
The Bridge Bunnies each purchased high topped broad rimmed black hats with a green band around the base. They looked a bit like triangular witch hats with the point removed. Zana selected bonnet and Scanner donned her own green wild west style hat with one side pinned up. All the head-ware had built in heat dissipation materials to help disperse built up UV warming.
Next they ambled over to the clothes shop and here Eira helped Seren pick out a long coat in blue that went with his hat. "Yeah! Very Phantom Rider now! Just need to get you a silver steam pistol and a white coesau plu."
"Eira... Is this a vacation? Or dress up doll?"
"Why not both?"
Scanner picked out a woman's riding outfit in green while the seven lapine brothers all selected elegant coats and pants with buckled shoes. They looked reminiscent of Spanish aristocrats dressed so. Especially with the frilly lace. Zana dressed in a gown that spread out in all directions. She blushed so much it was visible through her cheek fur when Seren teased that she could hide all of the Bridge Bunnies under her petticoats.
All done with basic shopping they stopped by to say hello to Eira's distant cousin. This fellow was a Wiwer Fawr of a light brown fur pattern and blue eyes. "Eira ar y Blodau! Been three years since saw you last! Welcome Welcome!" He looked over the masked Dynol curiously. "Why are you so cute with that mask on? I am Gwynt Drwy'r Canghennau. You must be Llygaid Llawn o Ser my cousin has written about?"
"Probably unless she has more than one Dynol wrapped up in her tail." grinned the Systems Tech.
Gwynt grinned at that. "If the rumors are true then just one of you is more than enough." The squirrel-like alien and the human exchanged the double paw clasp greeting and then everyone padded over to an shaded eatery sized for small and large folk. "You hit a good time to visit. This is the cool season. Temperature will spike for three months during the hot storm season. Warm rain and high winds. Great for the plant life. But whooo! Don't plan on traveling!"
They got to try out the local quinine including bara haen fewnol, which was akin to a calzone stuffed with cheeses, a white cream sauce, ground nuts, lettuce and carrot equivalents, and strips of coesau plu meat for the omnivores in the group. Scanner and Zana had roast coesau plu with a selection of greens the two carnivores could ingest. From the store owner Seren learned that the Cozi Mari was picking up a shipment of meat to supplement the more carnivore sided crew's diets.
Gwynt would be joining the group as their guide while planet-side. Mostly just an excuse to catch up with Eira and socialize with aliens. "Not many offworlders stay long for obvious reasons. Too bad you Dynol can not improve the conditions here like are on the other colony."
"I am no terraforming expert, but the problem here is a bit more involved. Fixing it would require moving the planet's orbit or thickening the atmosphere to increase UV shielding. Any of which might disrupt the ecology established here." suggested Seren. "That is even assuming we could alter the orbit without wrecking the planet."
"Tis what I heard last time it was discussed. The trees here are dependent on the increased solar intake and adding more cloud cover might well cause them to weaken or outright die. There's also worry that thickening the atmosphere could increase the intensity and duration of the storms we get." A flick of the squirrel's bushy tail fore-back-fore showing his reluctant acceptance of that.
"It is a planet we Dynol would have passed on during survey simply because it would be more likely to make things worse trying to make it more agreeable for habitation. As is you need alot of tech solutions to stay here right?"
"Correct. But it is not bad once you get used to it and we have adapted to the environment slowly."
"At a cost." Seren pointed out.
Gwynt nodded. "At a cost yeah."
Seren shrugged. "Maybe in time a better solution can be had. Right now the tech just has not caught up to being able to handle a situation like this. So you are to be commended for sticking it out and finding solutions outside the box."
That perked up the tan furred squirrel and after everyone had eaten and gotten a drink they set about picking up another local to join on the trip. That being Gwynt's fiance Erlid Awyr y Nos. Erlid was a solid pitch black of fur and had bright red eyes. She was a shipping clerk for the starport. She also complimented Seren on his Phantom Rider cosplay. Much to Eira's continued entertainment at the Dynol's expense.
Finally it came time to board the train and Seren got to see first hand a functional and fully restored mono-wheel steam train. The engine and tender were were Thirty meters long and the main engine consisted of four interlinked mono-wheels. The series engine was surprisingly powerful and the train could pull eight-hundred unit-tons. Eira explained a little of the history as everyone boarded. "Very early on we developed parallel wheel designs. But one experimental company pushed for the mono-wheel design and it gained popularity and quickly muscled out other designs."
Gwynt added to this. Mono-wheels have always been a design aspect of transportation and no one is exactly sure when it supplanted other styles of wheels. Part of the success was very early gear and stabilizing breakthroughs."
"Due to the stopping problems when not used in series?" guessed Seren.
"Exactly. Early mono-bikes were more than a little harrowing to stop at speed." Gwynt grinned. "But were too fun to drop for safer designs. The basis worked fine. It was the sudden stops that kept leading to accidents. Speed laws were for a good while very strict. But people were always pushing it when out away from the dencities. Eventually someone hit on a pivoting gyro system to counter the rotation problem. The trains did not suffer that problem and just needed stationary bracing legs when at a stop."
The passenger cars were luxurious with padded seats and even a dining and lounge car. The sleeping cars were just as finely crafted of metal and wood. Each car of the mono-train was accessible via two doors, one on either side of each car's center-line wheel. Some luggage and cargo was packed into the lower parts of each sphere that comprised a car. The ride was scheduled to take a twenty-two hour day to cover some one-thousand kilo-units distance.
And so plans were made as to what to do during the shore leave at the re-enactment site and surrounding tree-city.

2023.06.05 12:39 FalseCogs The role of reason on the path to liberation
The thought of using logic may evoke negative emotion for many seekers. This is understandable, as
awakening is ultimately about non-conceptual mental shifting. But here is the hidden pickle. Awakening is
not liberation. And liberation happens to revolve intimately around a particular concept known as the
self. As like dissolves like, concept dissolves concept. Attraction and repulsion may be driven by emotion, but the strings of
attachment are made of reason. To dissolve this attachment, we may need to replace shallow reason with higher vision.
Identity -- the core of attachment
Humans go through a natural progression of identity. This begins rudimentarily during the first year after birth. At first, there is neither separation, nor even basic understanding. As times move, the child accumulates certain hunches and ideas of separation, causation, good, and bad. These concepts and intuitions build upon one another toward ever more complex social awareness. Eventually, most such minds find themselves engulfed and entangled in a mess of social relations, expectations, and duties. Often this state of identity brings with it an assortment of suffering.
For many, the fear of loss prevents letting go of existing ideas of self and purpose. But for some, circumstances arise that expose cracks in the foundation. Whether from unsurpassable moral dilemma, or from intolerable identity crisis, existing assumptions can prove unsustainable. The worldview has grown sour, and the self-concept may need flushing.
And this is where concepts may come to rescue. It so happens that when existing mental structures -- such as the self-concept -- are no longer tenable, one of the most faciliatory amenities is the availability of suitable insight. This insight may include concepts that allow standing dilemmas to be resolved gracefully. The process, however, may entail dissolution of the old self-concept, to find new identity. And said identity may not be separate or individual, nor necessarily anything at all.
Path of building and dissolving the separate self
While many details are omitted for brevity, below is an outline of the process of ego and identity development throughout life. This outline pulls from Klein's
object-relations theory (1946), Piaget's
theory of cognitive development (1977), Fowler's
Stages of Faith (1981), and Kohlberg's
theory of moral development (~1981).
- [~0-6 months] -- transitory objects -- Self and caregiver as either all good or all bad, depending on current level of gratification or fulfillment. Pure, unrestrained attraction and repulsion. No real concepts.
- [~6-24 months] -- increasing object-permanence -- Self and others as increasingly persistent entities with positive and negative aspects. Primitive concepts.
- [~2-7 years] -- basic agency -- Increasing awareness that different people have different goals, desires, and knowledge -- otherwise known as theory of mind. Primarily focused on satisfying own personal desires within constraints of interference from others. Essentially selfish, but may possess emotional empathy. The self is seen as more-or-less wholly separate and independent from others. Limited understanding of social cause-and-effect or meaningful relation to others -- outside of satisfying immediate emotional and material needs.
- [~7-12 years] -- interpersonal accord -- Individuals are graded by how they treat their peers. Identity begins fairly simple, mainly based on remembered past events and deeds of self and others. Basic sense of community, belonging, and reciprocity.
- [~12+ years] -- authority and conformity -- Group affiliations are strengthened and made formal. One's identity is no longer one-off, but tied to affiliated tribes, or social circles. Purpose and morality revolve around group norms. Religious or political affiliation is likely. And religious or political dogma may be taken and propagated. Parroting is common. Most people stop here. They may, however, change affiliations from one group or authority to another.
- [~21+ years] -- self-determination and individuation -- When affiliations or group norms are found to stifle one's emotional or spiritual needs, one may enter into a process of individuation, or "finding oneself". Often one's identity is built anew, based upon personalised values. Existing relationships may be pruned, with duties now customised for each relationship. Often this is the most confident and egoic stage. The self-concept is elevated to top-tier importance. Most professionals and businesspeople reside here. As for spirituality, this is usually where you find spellbinding and manifesting. The core belief is that whatever the ego wants can be willed into existence -- mind over matter.
- [~35+ years] -- phenomena and universals -- Sometimes even during or after "finding oneself", there may arise doubts about the "legitimacy" or sustainability of living with attachment to personal narratives and proclamations. Or maybe after reflecting on personal or societal suffering it becomes clearer that individual paths and pursuits depend on the exact arrangement of past circumstances. Moreover, it may be seen that while each person faces case-specific struggles, many underlying similarities exist between individuals, their confusion, and their troubles. After such insights may arise, priority may shift toward living by universally applicable values or principles. The personal narrative is thus generalised, and identity finds closer affinity for living virtuously or conscientiously, as opposed to prioritising prior plans or one-off stories. Ego is still present, but its grasp is softened and its focus is broadened beyond the individual.
- [~45+ years] -- transpersonal and trans-phenomenal -- Occasionally even while living virtuously, personal, social, or further suffering or attachment may pose dilemmas. For example, it may be found that harm or wrongdoing to others cannot truly be avoided. Or maybe one's power to make a positive difference seems implausible. Or the world's evil is simply too great to counter. In cases like these, one may need to trace the origins of people and phenomena -- of both good and evil -- to transcend these quantities. For those of gentle background, a simple glimpse of awakening may be enough. But if one has seen too much evil, the now-strengthened walls of resistance may need careful reform. And this is where logic may help, as for example the learning and integration of dependent arising, shadow work, or even behavioural psychology. If the process of identity integration is successful, one may find the higher Self.
- [~45+ years] -- not-self and emptiness -- Even after all the above, and especially in cases of chronic illness or pending demise, attachment to the greater being may still be too much. Though less dependent on logic, and much more on intuition, reflection, and trained endogenous orienting, this final skill in letting go can come in handy. For example, if one were burning alive, it were perhaps better to see the emptiness of sensation, or at least the beauty of pain.
Concepts, attachment, and falling back
Ego, identity, and worldview development involve the accumulation of insight and concepts on the play of life and matter. Awakening itself may provide
some of the possible spectrum of insight, but there are key pieces that require actual experience and living. Progression through stages is enabled by a combination of
insight and
dilemma. The absence of either can spell stagnation. The absence of insight in particular can result in prolonged suffering.
The role of dilemma is to provide the
emotional impetus for
changing attachment to concepts and relations. This is important because concepts, once acquired, stick around. Even upon awakening or liberation, concepts are still there. What changes after each emotionally significant event is not only the possible acquiring of new concepts and insight, but the
reconfiguring of emotional attachment to particular ideas and perspectives. This reconfiguring is the essence and meaning of moral development.
One might think none of this matters post-awakening since awareness may become seemingly distanced from appearances. But here is the catch. When living in society, one will be interacting with others. And that interaction will sometimes get tense. Not all events will be ones for which prior conditioning is available. And this means that actual thinking will still be needed. Which means further, that actual concepts will be employed. When interacting in society, concept happens.
Depending on the level of tension and novelty, intuitive flow may break. When this happens, one falls back to one's
previous stage of conceptual understanding and ego development. This is often called the
contracted state. If one took shortcuts to arrive at awakening, without seeking liberation through inner work and proper understanding of interdependence, falling back to the contracted state is likely to entail significant ignorance and suffering.
The thing about flow is that it involves the automatic expression of
prior experience. Even if no concepts are being used
consciously, prior concepts are still expressing implicitly and subconsciously. These two phenomena -- emotional attachment to prior perspectives, and implicit expression of prior concepts -- is why awakening is
not liberation. Even though concepts are inherently arbitrary, there is still value in having the right ones in the mental toolkit.
Summary
In the game of awakening, the thought of concepts may bring cringe. But just as inner work may seek to resolve hidden conflict, mind work may help to dissolve mind worms. Human identity progresses through a series of stages. And each successful step brings us closer to liberation. The goal is not attachment, but rather its dissolution. Concepts of higher awareness serve as tools to dissolve lower assumptions. The more stressful times get, the more useful are tools of insight. Among the most in need of dissolve are beliefs in personal separation and doership. Yet others too, like identifying with "good" and rejecting "bad", can sustain suffering. Sometimes it helps not only to
feel connected, but to
understand how the pieces fit.

2023.06.05 12:11 Minute_Arm_3441 Advice for playing Artist
I'm trying to main artist and have been using my birds to block loops, and check far off gens, I even manage to get long range downs by hitting consecutive long range birds. But I just had a match on Lery's where I got run by a single survivor for 4 gens, then I moved to break 1 of the like 3 pallets they actually had to drop and instantly they got rescued and ran me for the last gen and exit gate. I tried cutting them off and using birds to cut of loops but they never actually had to loop anything there was just another super safe window or pallet right next to it. How can I counter that as Artist or is Lery's just a extremely bad map for her?

2023.06.05 10:40 dianamisu How to help New cat to understand that there will be enough food for him?
A week ago I adopted a second cat. Took in a little Maine coon whose original owners lost their home. He is a lovely cat and gets along with our first cat really good, but the food is problem.
He doesn't eat, he swallows everything that is on plate. My guess is that he had to fight for food before, since he wasn't the only cat in previous home as well. I have bought a bowl with grooves to make eating harder for him, so he slows down, but he still tries to eat all the food. If the other cat eats - he definetely now wants to eat again even though he stoped a minute ago.
I could portion his food more strictly and feed on certain times, but I feel that it would do bad for the other cat who right now has a beautiful relationship with food. She eats just enough. And will come to her bowl multiple times to snack a little and then go on her merry way. I am afraid that the little gluton will traumatize her and will make her feel like there is not enough food...
I could leave out enough food that he can't eat it all, but I am afraid that it will result in overfeeding the boy
Does anybody have had simmilar situation? Any tips on how to tackle this?

2023.06.05 08:20 Czecanaia_1313 Old Dragon's Tale
Hello, this old comment is reposted as per requested by
u/homu, one of the good op who shared the Old Dragon's Tale, spin-off work by Mushoku Tensei by Rifujin na Maganote. It was originally posted
here. Check out for more infos. Please note that this contains spoilers from all the main novel, sequels and spin-offs. It's focused about Laplace, Orsted and Dragons Tribe. Enjoy!
Finally, I've finished this. I was so invested in MT's main, sequels and spin-offs stories. Aside from The Last One to Leave the Nest, this Old Dragon's Tale is the only one made me feel really emotional and sad. I really feel sorry for Laplace. Being the only one who remains and remembers all the harsh truth from the past worlds makes my heart break. He's been fighting alone all in his remaining life to accomplish his mission for the sake of Dragon God, his comrades, the Dragon race, for the future and yet what he got in the end was his name being sullied, misunderstood and mistreated as the very source of evil. Don't get me wrong, I'm not justifying what Demon God Laplace did was right. It's just that the fate on him was so cruel since birth. I wish there's a sequel when he can gain some justice for every things and efforts his past self did. And I wish there's a chance where his name could at least be cleaned in the world or to some important people like Peruguis who loathed him so much.
Also I feel sorry for Rostelina, being the only one who knows the truth directly from Laplace himself, it's truly disheartening that her last solely wished was to be able to help her master Laplace and Orsted in the future, and yet it's not being fulfilled bcs she her memories got erased. She's been waiting all alone for thousand years and then forgotten until she was rescued. Ack it's really makes me really sad and cry.
I hope there some part of sequel (if there's any in the future) to have some scenes of:
-Reincarnated Laplace and Rostelina (>!Elinalise -Or if possible, I hope Orsted (or Perugius or someone like Lara) will find the Laplace's old house at the peak Dragon's roar mountain where all his written records, books and journals about the truth from the past life in dragon world and the times where he lived with Rostelina in human world would be recovered. I hope they will find it and tell to Elinalise somewhere in the future.
-I also wanted to know what happen to the original Human God. I'm curious to see Hitogami's downfall. I know he's gonna be sealed in the void world for infinite years. But I wanted to know how Orsted got to the Void World and their confrontation.
There are some questions lingering and wondering in my mind after reading this that got me confused:
-Did Perugius know the truth about the origin of the Dragon race and what Hitogami did to all the worlds before? If he knew, then why is he still abhorred Laplace? He should help Orsted at least.
-If he doesn't know, then I understand why he's hostile with Demon God Laplace, but not on Technique God Laplace. He should, at least, know the truth and the history about it especially of what happened before the First Human-Demon war. Did he knew the mission or purpose of Laplace? Did he knew that Laplace was the Technique God? Did he also knew that Laplace was his Godfather and subordinate (and friends) with his mother?
-Who is Dragon God Urupen? (I maybe forgot some details from the main novel) Is he a descendant of one of the Dragon Generals? Or some warrior that just happened to be the one who saved baby Perugius and bring him to the human world?
-When I read the novel, I thought that Dragon General Maxwell and Chaos are existed in the time of Perugius when their name got spoken (then later died as he stated that they where gone only for dozens of years), but after reading this I happened to know that they were perished since Dragon world's rupture, so technically they were gone for thousands years ago. So my question is how the crest of Chaos engraved to autonomous doll (or the old notes) found from the basement of the Greyrat's house? Before I read this I was thinking that the owner of that house before was some kind of bigshot like Chaos (or Maxwell) bcs of how the house was built and designed then abandoned it until became haunted. I got this conclusion while Zanoba and Perugius talking about it. Or maybe I'm just exaggerating things and the owner of that house before was just some random curious man who happened to find some Chaos old works invent the autonomous doll.
-I wonder if Orsted knew that Laplace was his (adopted) older brother? Did they meet (in the past loops) when he was the Demon Dragon God form or when he was in Technique God? If in Technique God, did he tell what he remembers to Orsted?
-Where is the Technique God Laplace? On the novel, they stated that he was missing. So he was probably being sealed somewhere, but not dead, right? If he's alive, he's probably with Saleyakt (if he also still alive). I wonder if he meet Orsted. If he's dead, I'm wondering if the Technique God can also be reincarnated like his half Demon God self?
-Assuming that Orsted and Kishirika was in the same age (bcs they're the babies that time). So, did Orsted also existed the time of first human-demon war where Kishirika was one of the main proponent? Or Orsted only existed on the time of second human-demon war? His father, the Dragon God-sama stated that he will reincarnated his son ten thousand years in the future. The first war happened, iirc, 4200 ago. Then the second was only 400 ago. I'm so confused with the years he existed and how his loops working.

On the shipyards orbiting the forge world Exznuvva:
Laborer 12 32 1453 offered gratitude to the Priestesses, for their sight had spared the lowly such as he. If not for the beetles, his aging bones would have made his worth to the forges fall, and his worth to the alter rise. Give praise to the sight of the Priestesses, for they saw the unworthy who hoard their blood from Axzuur when worthy Axxaakk did yet draw breath. Yet, he was pleased to make worth of himself at the shipyards. Why shouldn't he? The glorious vessel would fly forth into the starfields of the unworthy to cull them from the lands which rightfully belonged to the Emperor and Empress, and their subordinates, thus sparing those of little worth who would be required to sate the thirst of Axzuur, may the stars tremble at his step, in their stead. How he hated the cowards for hiding so long from their fate, for if they had been discovered earlier, perhaps his father would yet live.
Once he had sufficiently abased himself to the local shine to the Empress, may she see where the unworthy hide, he made his way to his assigned dwelling place. Indeed, today was a very good day, as extraction ships had returned with all which is needful to his trade in even greater numbers than from the onset of the conquest, thus increasing his worth. If he could gain just a little more worth to the shipyard, he may be assigned apprentices to guide that he might make those young of little worth escape the alter. This is why he was pleased as he entered his assigned dwelling place granted him by the generosity of Initiate-Highborn Narrex-Sarvon, may his might ever increase, and was pleased to find his assigned breeding partner also present.
"Partner," she said coolly, "you look pleased."
"The war goes well, and my worth rises despite these bones," he said.
Laborer 22 15 1427 scratched the metal wall with her knuckle horns and asked, "Think you to rise to warrior?"
"Nothing so grand, partner," he laughed. "I hope to be worthy to give instruction to those of little worth as I was or may be."
"This ambition is well, for you can attain it," she said as she swayed toward him, "I too have an ambition. I desire to give birth to a warrior."
"You aim too low, partner, for you could be worthy of a name," Laborer 12 32 1453 said with a gentle smile.
"Jest not!" she snapped in reply.
"I do not," he said earnestly, "for I believe that you could raise better than the raising centers, to become a true mother."
"This you likely say beguiled by my meager beauty. I care not, leave aside your flattery and instead give to me the seed of a warrior."
Laborer 12 32 1453 lay abed in the glow of the completion of his latest task. To sire a warrior might indeed raise his worth, he could only hope that the war last long enough for the proving. He hoped indeed that if his assigned breeding partner did become pregnant from their labors together, she would have occasion to demonstrate her skill with babes, and be allowed to raise it herself, and perhaps even be selected to tend the highborn babes.
On Numiind:
Jax hid in the shadows of an alley and watched the combined arms patrol trundle down the street. It had been thirteen days. Thirteen days and seven refugees laid beneath the waves. But still, they found survivors. Still, they liberated prisoners. Still, they held out. The Republic was coming, so Jax lead his cell. The Republic was coming, so Jax watched the Axxaakk tank and squad trundle down the road. They'd done a little testing, and the hover tanks, well, they didn't like being hit from below. Unsurprisingly, to be sure, but that's why they patrolled with infantry elements now. However, this was their home, not the Axxaakk's. Little did they know that there was a massive cave a mere ten feet below grade. They had learned that there were tunnels, and that the resistance was using them to get around, the consequence of another cell getting wiped out in another mining town, but Jax wasn't just some cop trying to defend his home. He was a trained RNI Drop Trooper, and so he knew how to run opsec. The tank shuddered over the proper location, and he clicked his radio twice. There were seven muted explosions, the Axxaakk infantry stopped and took aim, anticipating the coming attack.
However, they should have looked to their feet where large cracks were spreading in the plascrete in a wide oval with its longer sides kissing the buildings, until the force of the tank's grav drive finally caused the underlying stone to buckle, and the entire formation plummeted forty feet to the hard rock below.
He, Rae, Kie, and Ash popped out of their concealment and laid down supressing fire from their newly elevated positions, and quickly took out the remaining infantry, and also convinced the tankers to stay nice and buttoned up in their tank too damaged to hover anymore. Which was exactly what they needed them to do while Mei blew a nearby levy, allowing the sea to intrude upon that part of the town, and the street, and the hole in it. They waited for the water to settle, and waited some half hour more in silence and stillness. Then, Jax ordered over the radio, "Ash, go take a look."
"You got it boss," the man answered, and try as he might, Jax could not identify the shadow darting through the water which was Ash. He suspected that ash had taken an indirect route, and if he had Jax would approve. The enemy might have rudely refused to die for them. Then, Ash's whiskered face popped out of the water near the center of the new submarine sinkhole. "Looks like they drowned," he said softly into his radio.
"Good," Mei spat over the radio.
"Good work people, now let's get a move on to the next objective," Jax said.
They slipped into the waters of the newly flooded tunnels, and followed Kai to an abandoned mine shaft, where they made their exit some two hours later.
"Alright," Jax said softly, "we'll rest here for a bit."
Rae pat him on the shoulder and said, "You should sleep a little."
"I'm fine."
"Just fifteen minutes, Jax. I can keep watch."
Jax shrugged her touch off and said, "Kia and Ash, take a nap. The rest of you keep watch and eat something. We'll trade off."
"Got it," came the reply.
"Fifteen minutes, wake me up on the dot," Jax murmured to Rae.
She nodded.
One rest and recuperation later, and Ash was sent out to scout the facility. They'd gotten intel on the presence of pups being held hostage in the old school building, which has miraculously escaped bombardment. The public displays that the invaders made of plunging their wicked knives into the bellies of the elderly did not bode well for the captured pups, so Jax and his companions didn't even debate whether they would get the pups away from the invaders, but how and when. The answers to both questions would depend greatly on what Ash came back with.
"Jax," came his voice out of the shadows, "We have some company."
"What do you mean?" Jax asked as his trigger finger started feeling somewhat itchy.
Then, a sound came from the darkness that nearly made him weep, Republican Battle Cant, "Your buddy says you're a vet from the anti-piracy patrols."
"Hell yeah," he choked in return as the looming figure of an Advanced Stealth Drop Surveillance Scout stepped out of the shadows, even as his scout pattern armor shifted its coloration to blend into his surroundings.
"You came!" Rae exclaimed as tears filled her eyed.
"Of course we came. Where did you think the supply drops were coming from. We've determined this town is an ideal drop sight, as this is a main command hub for the enemy ground forces, so I've been preparing things."
"You took out the sacrificer…" Ash said with awe.
"How do you know that?"
Jax realized that the RNI ASDSS wasn't speaking RBC, or even Commercial English, but their own language, and decided to keep on with that, "Because it wasn't us, and there's nobody else holding out here."
"Just you five?"
"Us and the guards securing the refugees down below," Jax said.
"Alright, well that doesn't change anything. What's your coms?"
"Radio. The walkies for ops and HAM between cells."
"You still have HAM radios?"
"A hobby club started by a Human who moved here back just after first contact. It got popular to hear his stories."
"Huh," the RNI ASDSS grunted in a satisfactorily impressed way before he continued, "Okay, I think I'm patched into your frequency. Test test."
Jax nodded when all of the radios also said "Test test."
"Sir-"
"I'm no sir, I'm still a corporal."
"What do we call you, then?"
"Well, you can call me Lost Boy for now. Opsec."
Jax smacked himself on the forehead and said, "Ancestors forgive me."
"Huh?"
"We've been using our real names."
"Well, not to be mean, but you guys don't exactly have a very wide pool of names. They probably think they're code names anyway."
"Okay Lost, we're here on a rescue op. They have pups in there to do Ancestors know what with, and we're not waiting around to watch them get stabbed to death on top of some weird rock."
"Gotcha, I'll find me a good firing position and switch the APR over to quiet mode and provide overwatch."
"Aye, Lost. Signal when you're in position. Three clicks on the radio. Everyone, move out."
"One more thing," the Lost Boy said as the group started breaking up, "The drop pods will be hitting about ten klicks west in about three hours, so let's get the kiddos under cover before then, gotcha?"
In low orbit over Numiind:
Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn and Acolyte-Lord Gukea-Sarvon stood before the display screen and made their report to Priest-Lord Tiglach-Pilexer. They did not dissemble, exaggerate, or otherwise attempt to save face before their commander, as they knew how dire the position of the invasion fleet had become after the destruction of a single diplomatic vessel. They knew well that they may have to crouch before this new foe for the time being, for the High Priestess had seen that their might was great indeed, yet the Dominion of Axxaakk was also mighty. Morover, the ever thirsting Axzuur, may the stars tremble at his steps, commanded their conquest, and could therefore not falter.
However, it was up to those who obey that the triumph be as glorious as possible, lest Axzuur become displeased and demand their blood as the unworthy. Thus, while it might have been wise at another time to embellish the facts in their favor, they knew that such would be short sighted in this case.
Acolyte--Lord Narrex-Quinn was saying, "I do not expect we can begin to dominate the mammal-worms across the planet to such a degree that they resume their industry at our direction."
"Indeed," Acolyte-Lord Gukea-Sarvon agreed, "and we have gathered that which was readily available in either the raw or already processed before we took possession of it."
"Thus, unless we can send one to delay the Terrans, for at minimum two annum, we shall need to move on and raid elsewhere."
"Let it be so," the face on the screen decreed. "Carry off with you those adults who's young you have in custody. They shall make excellent serfs on these wet worlds."
"We obey, Priest-Lord," they intoned as they bowed and their superior cut the communication."
"I shall return to my flagship," Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn said, and the Initiate-Highborn present moved immediately to accommodate this.
"I was pleased to work with you, brother. Would that we had time to subjugate this world. I would think you placed at its alter, and thus find yourself raised up to Priest-Lord."
"My fate is to be covered in blood and glory, brother. Such a task and honor must fall to another."
"It troubles me that we could not crush these mammal-worms even after more than ten days," Acolyte-Lord Gueka-Sarvon grumbled.
"If it were not so, we would not have so many new serfs. It is much the same upon the other worlds infested with these lower creatures," so we have gained much for the Dominion, as have other Acolyte-Lords."
One shuttle ride later, and Acolyte Lord was in his quarters, enjoying a local delicacy, some kind of water animal with fins. Its flesh was pleasantly tender and sweet. He hoped that he would be a part of the forces who would return to this place to conquer this place for this treat alone. His pleasing reflection on future glories was Interrupted by an initiate-Highborn.
"Acolyte-Lord, your leadership is needed in the command throne," the Initiate-Highborn murmured with a proper waist deep bow.
"Return to your station, I come."
"I obey," he said and quickly shuffled away.
Acolyte-Lord was in his subordinate's heels all the way to the bridge, where alarms were blaring, "Report at stations," he commanded.
"Four incoming hyperspace exits detected in the interdiction zone!"
"Ship class estimation!"
"Unknown, Acolyte-Lord! Their shadows are somehow obscured."
"Assume the worst, order all frigates and their escorts to the exit sites!"
"They do exit now!"
"On screen!"
"I obey!"
Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn's amputated hand quaked at the sight of the sensor data rendered visually. The ships were massive, bristling with weapons platforms, communications and network arrays, and bay doors. "Battleships," he whispered in horror.
"A hail comes, Acolyte-Lord!"
"Refuse it!"
The main display screen suddenly lit up with a black banner with a yellow star at its center and what looked to Acolyte-Lord Narrex-Quinn like a glassed planet to one side accompanied by the audio, "We remember the
We Sing."
"I said not to accept a hail!"
"Acolyte-Lord, they broke through our system with the hail itself as if they were from a Priest-Master's ship!"
Aboard the Destroyer Tiger Lilly:
The squadron had just exited hyperspace, and the enemy was around the space-otter planet of Numiid in force. There was even a battleship there, or at least what these genocidal scum thought was a battleship. Corporal Linus George sent up a prayer, and clambered into his drop pod. He always hated the space superiority portion of the battle, even against junker pirates, and these freaks had actual weapons. All plasma, but they had reportedly sunk a few Roma Nova ships, which was impressive for plasma only. He was going to show these murderous zealots what happens when you go fucking around and touch a Republican boat. They were in find out time.

2023.06.05 06:03 Deezaurus Cat keeps vomiting from wet food
(Signalments at the end of the post.)
Hello, we have two cats that are on the same type of diet. One of them is a Russian Blue (and the cat in question) named Shaze and the other one is a Brittish Short hair - Maine Coon mix named Jochem. Shaze has recently (for around the past week) started vomiting from the regular wet food we've been giving them. Around 2-3 times a day on wet food days. We alternate wet food and dry food every couple days, and he's been fine on dry food days.
Both the dry and the wet food we give them are premium brands with no grain. The dry food is Venandi (Salmon flavored) and the wet food is Catz Finefood (Game). We've been feeding them like this for the past 1 and a half year or so and this has only been happening for a week. We've stuck with these foods after many different purchases and test cans because this was the only one Shaze would take to as he seemed to be a very picky eater when we got him. The cans of wet food themselves seem fine too when we open them. This batch seems very fresh too (smell, looks, consistency). Jochem does not get affected by the food but Shaze vomits in chunks and then liquid. He's much thinner than Jochem too (only 3,6 kg), so it's even more worrysome for us.
They both seem fine when you look at them, tho. Jochem is his usual self (reserved, chill and sweet) and Shaze is his usual self (playful, vocal, always seeking attention). He's also still purring every time we pet him and walks around with this tail up high, especially when we look at him. Overall he seems happy, it's just that he's throwing up a lot that's making us concerned.
Do we need to take him to the vet?
Species: Feline Age: 2 years old Sex: Neutered Male Breed: Russian Blue Weight: 3,6 kilograms Genereal Location: Germany No history of being ill before, vaccinated 1 year ago

2023.06.05 04:59 PitifulDoombot More Across the Spider-Verse Analysis and Theories [Please Discuss!]
This is a follow up to my previous analysis here:
https://www.reddit.com/IntoTheSpiderverse/comments/13yomdh/the_worst_thing_beyond_the_spiderverse_could_do/ So there are a couple more incredible story and visual details I wanted to bring up and encourage some discussion on (I've seen the film four times now, I have a problem).
Pavitr:
The film makes sure to note how new Pavitr is to being Spider-Man. He's only six months in and he claims that being Spider-Man is "sooooo easy!" (something we know is absolutely not true). He's given his (implied) first "playbook" Spider-Man challenge when saving civilians from the collapsing Alchemax building. While holding onto a bus filled with people, including his love interest, he sees that Inspector Singh is in mortal danger and tells himself that he "can do both", he can save everyone. This directly mirrors Miles's current situation as well as Miles's current attitude. However, Pavitr isn't the main protagonist of the story, we can see that he can't do both (while reassuring himself he can "do both" he begins to wrap the single thread of web suspending the bus full of people onto one of the small concrete grid rods sticking out of the collapsed bridge he's hanging onto), he can't save everyone, Miles had to intervene for everyone to be saved. Miles's intervention is mirrored by Gwen and her band's intervention in helping Miles in the next film. However, Pavitr's dimension collapsing could foreshadow that the band's help won't actually address and resolve the moral problem presented. To note, Pavitr was spared the pain of losing Inspector Singh, but he was also denied this opportunity to grow, he wasn't challenged to forge ahead in the face of the death of someone close to him.
George Stacy:
Aside all the current analysis on George Stacy's role in proving that canon can be subverted as well as Gwen's "coming out" character arc to her father, there's a parallel between George and Miles that I don't see anyone talking about. One of the core themes of Across the Spider-Verse is responsibilities, specifically conflicting responsibilities (the moral dilemma). George Stacy does not only possess responsibility as a father, but he possesses responsibility as a cop. When Gwen is revealed to be Spider-Woman to him, his two responsibilities are immediately made incompatible with one another. He's forced into a position to choose one responsibility over another, he chooses to be a father over being a cop. This further plays into another theme in the film, "you can't have it all". In George Stacy's little monologue, "police captain" is interchangeable with "Spider-Man", the mask is the badge and vice versa. Miles is in a position now where, with the information given to him and us the audience, his responsibility as Spider-Man is in conflict with his responsibility as a son. He may ultimately have to make a choice to uphold one responsibility and abandon the other. We want Gwen Stacy to come out on top, so having George quit the responsibility of police captain is great for her and for us, but having Miles quite the responsibility of being Spider-Man is a much more morally challenging choice.
Clearing up Jeff Davis's role in Prowler Miles / Miles-42's life:
I've been seeing some debate online on whether Miles-42's dad had been absent from his upbringing or whether he had died recently (similarly to the timeline of Uncle Aaron's death). When the "camera" follows Miles-1610 around his Earth-42 home variant, the family photos only contain him and his mom. When the camera follows Gwen around Miles's Earth-1610 home variant, the family photos contain all three members of the Davis/Morales family. Both characters are used as tour guides to subtly inform the audience that Jeff has been dead for most of Miles-42's life and wasn't a large part of his upbringing (not a recent death).
Peter B. Parker:
I absolutely love Peter's monologue to Miles about "good" things and "bad" things happening. His message to Miles is a much more emotionally touching and charitable version of the current status quo of what it means to be Spider-Man. The message highlights that there will always be bad things that happen, you can't always stop them from happening, you probably often can't stop them from happening, but you have to take the good with the bad, you have to find a reason to keep going (rest in power Uncle Aaron), you have to make a reason to keep going. Struggling and fighting more and more against the bad actively prevents you from finding that good and those reasons, trying to shut down the all the harm and all the pain now furiously and stubbornly creates more harm by shutting down the good you could've fostered in healing and moving on (a much better version of Miguel's point). Peter is a more optimistic and emotionally charitable version of Miguel in reiterating this point and approach on Spider-Man as a character, and this compassion encouraged Miles to begin processing this point of view. However, the watch's beeper prevented us from getting to see Miles begin to seriously consider this approach.
Miles's Strength:
Miles speech to his Earth-42 variant of his mom was incredible. The line "I know how strong I am now" has beat me with an emotional stick during each of my four viewings. To go through exactly what his mom foreshadowed he would go through and to come out with an experience that validates his identity and his claim to the Spider-Man mantle of power is the kind of self-discovery that inspires us to be strong, assertive, independent, and charitable to ourselves. But here's the thing, Miles's strength hasn't faced the ultimate test yet. He hasn't yet come face to face with the death of his dad and the destruction of his universe. His immediate and current moral decision is to still risk the safety of everything else and everyone else to rescue his father (see Pavitr). He thinks he can save everyone, he thinks he can have it all, he doesn't actually know how strong he is yet.
Miles being a "unique" Spider-Man:
I've seen a lot of sentiment that because Mile's is a "unique" Spider-Man, he is, or should be, exempt from the "rules" of canon. Miles isn't actually all that unique though. He's "unique" in the sense that he's the main character, so we're meant to empathize with him and focus on the differences between his journey as Spider-Man from the journeys of other Spider-People. However, showing us an absolutely TON of Spider-People in Spider-Society isn't just fanservice. We get so many different costumes, color schemes, body-types, voices/accents, and artstyles between the Spider-People that it's difficult to find any two that look nearly identical in any scene where we see the Spider-Society. Each Spider-Person is "unique" the same way Miles is, they each have their own stories and their own aesthetic. I think the writers' deliberately chose to highlight how unique each Spider-Person is as well as highlight how they are all still the same because of the common narrative threads between all their stories. Despite how unique any of the Spider-People are, their experiences have broadly given them the same moral lessons.

To go through exactly what his mom foreshadowed he would go through and to come out with an experience that validates his identity and his claim to the Spider-Man mantle of power is the kind of self-discovery and self-actualization that inspires us to be strong, assertive, independent, and charitable to ourselves.

2023.06.05 04:13 Zak46 My effort to rewrite TLOU2. Forgive me for how bad it is
Beginning/opening - Mid Game:
Starts right where the first game left off. We see the conversation and where Joel continues his lie to Ellie. This will help emphasise the importance this will have later on.
The game will start off slow paced, Joel and Ellie reaching Jackson and will begin establishing where the characters stand with each other (notably Joel, Tommy and Ellie)
The flashbacks with the dinosaur etc will all take place in chronological order from this point. I think this will help get players into the game and feel right at home again. This won’t be long, about the same time as the flashbacks were in the original game.
At some point they run into an infection zone and they fight to survive, but Ben getting close to being overrun, they are rescued by a group with a girl… I think you can imagine who this is. Joel being Joel doesn’t trust them, thanks them and they move on with what they were doing.
At this point, we will have a pov change and will be controlling young Abby and we are now heading back to camp (Abby having no idea who they just saved) this is where the player will do the things young Abby did in the original game, I’d even add one flashback when she sees something that reminds her of the death of her father. This will continue until she is older, she is trying to move on from her loss but she constantly wants revenge. Abby not able to put a face to her fathers killer is what angers her the most
During this there will be a raider group that is threatening the base and they have to evacuate, crazy sequence and stuff occurs, can’t be bothered to go into further detail, just fill in the blanks. This is where the survivors now begin to look for another place to set up refuge, a few members suggest a place at Jackson that has gained a reputation for fresh starts and being hospitable to outsiders.
This is where we flash back to Ellie and we now start to see Ellie and Joel’s relationship strained for a part of the game. All the action, arguments etc etc will take place her, but they will be older now as chronologically we followed Abby. (So instead of so many flashbacks, I’d want it to follow Abby for us to then get ti the older versions of Joel And Ellie)
A few weeks have passed during these events between Joel and Ellie and they are no longer on speaking terms. We now control Joel as Ellie walks away, this is where we hear Tommy letting in some people, one of which is Abby. This is where Joel and Abby talk. They are introduced to each other and shake hands. Tommy mentions that she will love Ellie and that she is very welcoming to guests “unlike my brother here” this is where Abby connects the dots and realises she is staring at the man that killed her father.
She controls her rage and walks away without a word, this makes Tommy and Joel question if she knows them. Tommy dismisses it and says she will come around “they always do”
Tommy runs to her and suggests that the next day she shouts go on patrol with him and Joel to see how they get things done around here and get to know each other more. Abby begrudgingly agrees and is taken to her new accommodation, she speaks to her friends and tells them what she knows and they are all skeptical as they have helped them and can’t believe they would be involved in what Abby is accusing them off. After much debate, they finally agree that they will take “them” down tomorrow on patrol
We now see a cutscene where Tommy’s wife asks to speak to Ellie. She asks Ellie about what’s going on between her and Joel. After a conversation, they both agree to sneak out tomorrow to take their minds off everything.
Come the next day, we are in control of Abby and one of her friends notches say that they saw Ellie and another woman leave just before they did. Two of them go after them. Abby and 3 of her other friends meet Joel and Tommy and they go out and they talk and have banter etc. all the while there are little hints that something is quite right. Joel says he’s going to check something out, the rest enter a building with Tommy. After a little chat, Tommy tackles one of them and just as Abby and the other friend pulls a gun, we hear Joel behind them “I wouldn’t do that if I was you, out the guns down. Who the hell are you people?”
Abby puts her hands up and tells Joel what he did to her. Joel and Abby end up on a big argument over Ellie and why both of them feel justified in their actions.
During this, Tommy says to Joel that he needs to shut up and look out the window. Outside is Tommy’s wife and Ellie held at gun point. They caught them and followed them to the house.
Joel now must make a choice whether to kill them and sacrifice Ellie or to allow himself to die. He is truly put to the test with Ellie’s life again. He drops the gun and chooses Ellie’s life again. Ellie is begging them not to. Joel just smiles at Ellie with tears running down his face. Abby shoots in twice in the head.
They now leave and now we are playing as Ellie and will seek revenge.
This is what I’ve come up with so far, I’ve never wrote anything like this and it’s probably terrible. Give me all the abuse you want. I just wrote it out of passion. My mains goal is to write it on a way Tarantino writes his characters, give them a scenario and imagine how the character would act in that scenario.
