2023.06.07 15:10 myspamhere The RE - Re return of the $99 Cobra Denali. (Now with more words)
6 years ago I made a $99 purchase of the cheapest semi-auto in America. 3 years ago, I gave up on it and now it is back from the dead. I was re-arranging the safe, and found this in the very back of it. I pulled it out, and figured 'Why not, I love disappointment.' So I am going down this road again.
The last problem I has was the magazine falling out with each shot. I pout in an empty magazine, and pulled, and it slid right out. The mag catch can be removed once the grip is off. I took off the grip removed the catch and examined it. I could see instead of a sharp corner, it was completely worn to a round ramp.
I found a new one on e-bay that came with some more pins and springs. WOOHOO. I installed it, and the mag was secure again! Now I got out the dremel, and metal polish, and polished the freak out of the feeding ramp. It was a mirror by the time I was done. I cleaned it up, oiled it with Hoppes number 9 gun oil. I then tried to load a round to see if it would work. It jammed on the feed ramp. CRAP. I tried with the other magazine, and same result.
I put it back down and had a glass of Johnnie Walker Green ( I Don't make enough for Blue.) I was done for the night. The next day, I looked at the .380 rounds, and noticed they were truncated flat nose. I tried loading again with round nose FMJ, and they freaking loaded fine. WOOHOO.
I went to the range yesterday, and it was mostly reliable with FMJ round nose. 2 times out of 30 rounds, it failed to go fully into battery. A small push on the back of the slide and it was ready to go.
For the hell of it, I loaded a mag with 3 rounds of Winchester Silver Tip 380's and .....IT SHOT ALL THREE..... without a problem.
Now I need to figure out the going back to into battery issue. I was using Blazer Aluminum so that might be part of it.
On a sad note - Cobra Firearms is out of business. I guess the lifetime warranty is no longer effective.
Stay tuned for more.....

2023.06.07 15:00 Historical-Front-442 Government Flats in Sri Lanka
Do you live in a government flat in Sri Lanka? What are some problems you face?
I know most parents from lower-middle to middle income families tend to buy government flats from people who got it free / or for low instalment plans from politicians once upon a time (this makes them feel entitled to do certain things, i.e. shop structures/ encroachment, which disrupt harmony).
I live in B12 Soysapura, Moratuwa. My mum bought this unit in 2015. We've been facing issues as a women-only household which are being completely shut down by the committee (MC) and even the CMA (Condominium Management Authority).
In a nutshell we have the following issues:
- Encroachment by ground-floor units- initiated by a few and then the domino-effect takes over.
- Making an issue when visitors come and park in common areas.
- Garbage collection (no one know when they collect non-organic waste- glass/ pape polythene/ plastic/ tins/ rags etc)
I have personally escalated this to the following individuals but nothing really has been done.
Eng. K.A Janaka (National Housing Development Authority)- 0714410820
Mr. Nalin Gankanda (CMA)- 0717778626
I have even made a video explaining what we are going through. (
(2) The dilemma of B12- adjoining St. Anthony's Church, Soysapura, Moratuwa - YouTube ) Flats in SL need a revamp and we need to push the CMA to get it done. Thoughts?

2023.06.07 14:57 ClerpClerptheHorned Former Gun Company Executive Explains Roots of America’s Gun Violence Epidemic: A Rebuttal (Post 1)
On June 2, ProPublica published an abbreviation of an interview of former Kimber exec Ryan Busse, who became a Senior Advisor to Giffords in 2021, written by Corey G. Johnson. I will attempt to counter the points and opinions and support in the article. Same disclaimer as before: please forgive my typos and mistakes as I am copying, pasting, and writing on my phone.
I saw the title for this article on my news feed some time on Saturday, and I immediately knew who to expect the interviewee was. I am reminded of a part of a Dave Chappelle skit where he is telling a story of a home invader, and his wife wakes him up in the middle of the night. He is excited thinking he is going to get some, but instead she tells him to go check out the noise in the kitchen. His response is “OOOOOOH, this B[redacted]!!!“ I bring this up because whenever a former executive is speaking in favor of gun control, it will be this guy, and my response is to parrot Chappelle’s exasperation.
To be fair, I think he has valid reason to leave the business of firearm manufacturing is he so wishes. I firmly and ardently believe each person should be able to make personal decisions to determine the course their life takes. What I detest is those who attempt to inflict upon the populace at large their personal beliefs by legislation and threat of legal repercussions, especially when it comes to those rights and liberties protected by the Bill of Rights and obviously outside the scope of the government’s authority.
But I digress.
The tagline for the article indicates there is a “danger of growing radicalization in the [firearm] industry.” I personally believe radicalization and extremism are is every major community; Christian Extremists and Racial Extremists have gotten a lot of publicity in the US of late, Islamic Extremists were a huge focus 10 to 25 years ago between ISIS and Al-Qaeda, and Right-Wing and Left-Wing extremists yell across the aisle at each other in Congress. So I will actually agree there is a radicalization which is happening in our country, but do I agree it is the firearm industry perpetuating it?
Question One “Where are we, as a nation, on guns? And Where do you think we need to go?” Busse’s first response in the piece is stating “we might be on the precipice of things getting much worse,” before pivoting to attack the Bruen decision. He then claims the broad reaching effects of the Bruen decision will be an overturning of “so many counted-upon regulations” which will be akin to an elimination of stop signs, i.e., creating a dangerous environment for everyone around. I admittedly HATE uncontrolled intersections, because of how rarely I interact with them, but I am okay with roundabouts due to my familiarity with them. But honestly, I just treat an uncontrolled intersection as a Yield, and I cross lanes cautiously. I have never been in a car accident, because every other driver I have seen at these uncontrolled intersections also make it a purposeful intention to avoid accidents, and proceed with intentional hesitancy.
It really is that simple. Even without stop signs (or burdensome gun regulations) MOST people will adjust and conduct themselves well. I cannot think of a firearm owner I personally know who does not treat a gun as a potential danger. Just as with fire, water, power tools, a sharp knife, or a car, they are careful in their usage of it to ensure safe outcomes. They follow the rules of firearm safety, and instruct others in the rules as well. Many gun owners can be spotted by holding a power drill with their fingers off the trigger, even. However, there are those who are reckless, impulsive, and dangerous. But these people tend to be whether they are driving a vehicle, shooting off fireworks, or handling a gun. So removal of stop signs, while it would be stressful, would be unlikely to result in mass fatalities, especially if sufficient notice is given and signs of “Change in Traffic Pattern Ahead” are posted.
And the comparison of traffic laws with gun regulation is also apples to oranges. The Bruen decision, in a nutshell, stipulates all gun laws must align with historical tradition, and have a comparable founding analogue. At the time of the founding, there were numerous laws abouts ones conduct with a firearm; it was illegal to terrorize others, murder, rob, or intimidate crowds with firearms. Such was not the behavior of a responsible, respectable member of society. Obeying traffic laws is similar; it is to give guidance to help address public safety and avoid recklessness. However, gun regulations most at risk from the Bruen decision are gun bans, licensing schemes, and usurious tax or insurance requirements. More comparable rules would be akin to an inability to even own a classic car which was legally produced with no seatbelts, or other now standard safety equipment. However, the law does allow us to not only own such vehicles, but even register and drive them on the road, despite laws requiring cars produced since the 60’s to contain seatbelts.
As much as regulation supporters love to compare licensing cars and drivers to firearms, it is a terrible comparison, and not only for the reasons already mentioned. In addition, I can own whatever car I want, and I can drive it, too, while on my own property, or the property of another with their permission. I am only restricted from driving it in public on roads. But gun grabbers want to remove from private citizens the ability to even own firearms, even if they are only used while at home, on a range, or hunting, i.e., with the permission of the property owner.
But, once again, I digress…
To sum up, following the counsel from the Bruen decision will result in the removal and repeal of laws which are onerous to ownership, but will not create a lawless wasteland where people can shoot each other with no legal repercussions.
Question Two: “What do you attribute this trend [of gun ownership and 2A renaissance] to?”
Busse argues gun manufacturers are violating a “fragile social contracted needed to be maintained on something as immensely powerful as the freedom to own guns.” In other words, he believes there needs to be vast restrictions on the “freedom” to own guns. …freedom… restriction… do those two go well together?
ANYWAY! He attributes the change to the advertising practices of gun manufacturers. He states an “unspoken code of conduct” to abstain from “egregiously irresponsible” advertising has ”broken down” in the pursuit of “company growth, above all other things” and “victory [profits] at all cost.” To be Frank (though my name ain’t Frank, Franklin, Francis, Franco, or any derivative), while I have seen a few gun advertisements, they are VERY rare to me. And most entail an over under shotgun while pheasant hunting, or something similar. Otherwise, it would be pictures on firearm discussion boards, half or full-page layouts in a firearms magazine, or a sale section or price update in a Gander Mountain or Cabela’s. Put more simply, most gun advertisements are where I went looking for guns. And I have heard of the Remington “man card” campaign (also mentioned later in the interview), but as much as I enjoyed shooting trap as a child, I never owned a firearm myself until the Pandemic and a societal breakdown was possible. Once again, I didn’t get a firearm until I went intentionally looking for one, even though I played paintball, airsoft, video games, and watched action movies my whole life.

After I sent River and Ocean away, I took a moment to compose myself. Omar is watching, trying to see how I'm reacting, I think.
"Melody, if you're going to use your Voice, you need to be
very careful about the things you order. You didn't specify to bring the Marines back alive, and now they're dead."
"You're right Omar, I need to be very careful when I'm wording things."
Ava doesn't seem to mind. "They did do what you asked though. and so quickly! I expected to not see them for at least a week."
It doesn't seem to bother Um'reli either. "You have to admit, it sends a message. People weren't taking you seriously before, and between this and what you did to Starlight... they're going to realize you are the real deal."
Omar looked ahead "Speaking of the real deal, look." He pointed.
We look out and...
Oh my.
The crowd. It's wall to wall people in front of the entrance to the Throne. More people than I've ever seen in one place before. Not here, not on Starbase Picaresque, not even at home on Meíhuā.
And they are all here to see
me.
I wish there was a rear entrance to the Throne. I bet there is, I wish we looked harder to find it.
I sighed. If we're going to do this, we might as well do it right. I looked back and my friends. "Okay, we're on. I'm going to try and impress everyone and see if they'll make a path for us. Once we're up I'll sit on the Throne and you can just stand behind me and look... official I guess. Ready?"
Nods all around. Good.
I turned back forward and thought about how I wanted to appear. My gown started to rustle like I was in a stiff breeze and my crown and wings appeared. I thought about the connection to the Reach and was able to tweak the air settings to get a breeze going around here too and as people looked back to see where the wind was coming from, they saw us.
The cheering created a wall of sound that we walked headlong into. It was practically a physical thing. As we stepped into the crowd Um'reli and Omar pushed forward to clear a path and the people parted like grass on the plains.
As we walked, I spread my wings for the look of it and they hung over the crowds as we walked past. People reached out to touch them as I passed and - I'll be honest here - I didn't think people would be able to feel them as they're made out of light and fog by the Nanites, but they could! I could even feel their fingers brushing over the feathers.
It's
very odd to have a sensation from a limb you've never had before. If I concentrated, I could hear the individual cries from people in the crowd as we walked, but after trying that for a couple of seconds it was entirely too overwhelming, so I just concentrated on the noise as a wall of sound without definition. It was easier to take that way.
We made it to the top of the gallery, and I turned to face everyone. every seat was filled and the entire lower level spilled out into the street almost all the way to the dock. I had never seen this many people here before all in one place! Aviens, Mariens, Azurians, the people who wear pressure suits and a few others I haven't met yet, all shapes, sizes and colors.
They were here, to cheer me.
They were here, to worship me.
This, was all for
me. Omar, Um'reli and Ava took up station behind me, seen but in the background as I raised my hands and spread my wings for silence. A hush descended, and everyone stared up at me, waiting.
"People of Reach of the Might of Vxxz. Thank you for coming. Today is a great day. A Builder, an Empress returns to you, so that you can become whole once again!"
Cheers and shouts. I hold my hand up for silence once again.
"The road ahead is long. The Gate is locked, the starships here in need of repair and systems all over the Reach have languished. But! You remain.
We remain. Now that I am here, I will begin repairs and upgrades. I will make our starships move again. I will open the Gates. I will reunite my Empire and we shall once again, rule the stars!"
More cheers. I wait for them to die down before continuing.
"Today though, you can come to me directly with your immediate grievances about things here, and me and my fellow Builders-" I gesture behind me "-will work to resolve as many as we can."
I sit in the Throne and feel the familiar cold tang of connecting to the Starbase. It feels different this time, smoother, more familiar. I lean back... and let go...
From all around the arena, my voice is heard. Everyone perceives my voice as coming only to them, direct to them. It's as if I am speaking to them, and them only.
"Speak your issue, and be heard."
"We are a family of 6 and yet, our quarters are such th-"
"Please, Empress, my son, he nee-"
"Those nosy Aviens next door are alway-"
"Food prices keep going higher and hig-"
As everyone talks to 'me' I am keeping a list of the grievances. I'm not sure how I'm doing it, I assume it's the Nanites plus how I'd naturally try and keep a list of information being used together, but as they speak, I track what their problem is. Amazingly, after they speak, I'm able to offer some soothing words to everyone. It's me and it's
not me at the same time. Even with my full Builder persona activated, I don't think I have the parallel processing to complete a feat like this. The Starbase and the Nanites must be doing the majority of the work.
After only an hour or so, it's done. Everyone that wants to speak has spoken, and I have thousands upon thousands of complaints to sort. I give a farewell and offer a blessing to everyone, and order the restaurants across the whole of the Reach to feed everyone for free today - promising they will be reimbursed for their work.
Royal part over, it becomes somewhat of a festival atmosphere around the Throne area. People milling about, talking with each other, catching up with old friends, eating and laughing. From my perch on the Throne, I watch the celebration. I get an overwhelming sense of relief tinged with a small amount of anxiety over what it means to have an Empress again. It strengthens my resolve to do my best to have it mean good things for the people that live here.
How am I going to pay for all this? What to other Empresses do?
They owned the banks. They just ordered it. Wait. There
are banks here, right? Is it really that simple?
Simple is often not *easy*
. But yes. You own your whole empire, including the banks. That's it! That's how we'll pay everyone and fund everything. A quiet part of me yells that it probably isn't that easy, and isn't that how inflation happens and don't I need to start taxing people to get money to go
in or something? I should look into it further, but it's a very quiet part of me right now. I can tune it out pretty easily.
I turn my attention to the list of complaints that were collected and with the Throne and the Nantes help, I try and do some rough categorization.
Neighbor Complaints - this is the largest list and will most likely be ignored. Should it though? Maybe I'll have the others look them over in more detail.
Food issues - this is second largest. We can look over it and see if there's some underlying issue. I can also look into the disused food distribution centers. Maybe they're turned off because there isn't the resources to use them anymore, maybe it's another reason. I feel like I can fix this one, and if I do, it will give me the biggest boost to my legitimacy.
Environmental issues - third largest and issues related to the environment here. I had just turned up the settings here yesterday, so I hope this helps eliminate those. This should be an easy win. Mei'la had mention something about how power usage felt wasteful here. Maybe there's something we can do to boost efficiency.
The rest of them are things like, asking when we're going to launch the Starships again and quite a few asking when I'm going to "take care of" the issue of other sapient groups. Hmm. I don't like that one. Luckily, the questions seem to be in the minority, but still.
Job finished for now, I stand up and stretch. My goodness, that was boring. I hope I don't have to do it very often. Looking around, I find Omar, Um'reli and Ava wandering around the area behind the Throne. "Find anything interesting?"
Omar gestures towards me. "Actually yes, look here. There's a door behind the Throne, out of sight of the people on the ground.
"What's behind it?"
"I don't know, there's no handle and I can't get it to open."
"You've had the Nanites for a day, try to do it as a Builder. Just concentrate on the door and imagine it doing what you order."
Omar stares at the door, and I can see the concentration in his hands and on his face. There's a small breeze around him and with a hiss, the door slides open into the ceiling.
"You did it! Congratulations, Builder!" I'm super proud of him.
Omar stares at the open door, and then down at his hands, and over to me. "That... was... the most
amazing thing! I just thought about the door opening and it did! It's like magic."
Now he will be one of *us*
. He has felt the power. I'm just happy he was able to do it. "Come on Omar, lead on. Let's see what's in here."
We go into the darkened room, and Omar again concentrates and the lights come up. Like most Builder stuff it clearly hasn't been touched in a very long time, but again, there isn't much dust here at all. It looks like everyone left for the day and shut the door... but then the door stayed shut for who knows how long.
Inside the room is 6 chairs that are arranged around a long table. Each of the chairs is in the same green metallic substance as the Throne. They're molded into the floor instead of the ceiling, but to me they look like where the Builder operators would sit when running the station.
"This looks like where the Builders sit when they are the starbase. Come, let's sit and try it out. It'll feel odd when you first sit, and if you get that feeling in the back of your brain to let go and sink further, don't yet. You need at least another day of Nanite development, but I think we're safe to connect lightly. I'll stay out of the seats and if I see anyone in distress, I'll pull them out. See if you can find my notes from the celebration."
Omar, Um'reli and Ava all sit gingerly. Ava is especially nervous - she's the one that saw me scream when I tried to integrate too quickly, but after a moment, I can feel them with my connection to the Reach.
"Wow, this is amazing! Melody, can you hear me?" It's Ava.
"Sure can Ava, it sounds like you're standing right next to me." I look over, and her body is just sitting in the chair, relaxed, breathing normally.
"Okay, I found your notes Melody. Looks like you sorted it somewhat already? Wow, how did you collect all this data?" Um'reli must have found my notes first.
"I have to admit, I don't really know. I just... knew what to do. The Nanites know more than I do, so sometimes I just let go and let them drive. I have a feeling that isn't always the right choice, but until I get more familiar with things, sometimes I feel like it's the only thing to do."
"Melody? I found the docking bay. It's empty right now, but I think I see how to maneuver High Line from the umbilical to the docking bay. Once it's inside we can get a better idea of what it would take to refit it with human systems and make it a viable starship again."
Oh, wonderful! I'm so glad Omar is here.
"Yes please Omar, do that. We'll go down and check it out once you've finished and everyone has a chance to get more familiar with how to be Reach."
While everyone is working, I go back over to the Throne and sit down. I get reconnected and just look around for a while. I like watching the movement of people on the Reach. It's... soothing I guess? Oh hey, up further are gardens and parks! I was worried there would be no greenery here. I should ride the train up later and explore.
I can feel Omar, Um'reli and Ava behind me exploring things, learning how they work, and with them here, I swear the Starbase is starting to work better. I can see people looking in wonder at lights that were long off and now are on again, breezes blowing as the air freshens, and even I'm noticing people starting to clean and sweep. It really feels like we're turning a corner here. I get an alert that for the first time in [DEMARCATION ERROR] another train is wheeled out from storage. It's needed for the crowds.
I wish I knew how long [DEMARCATION ERROR] was. If the starbase doesn't know, it was probably a long time. That really speaks to the power of the original Builders if 11 million people could live here with effectively no administration the whole time.
It's almost
too good to be true...
My reverie is interrupted by a radio signal. I look around, ah, there it is. It's the long range comms. Someone is signaling us.
Huh, FarReach is signaling us.
"Okay Melody, very funny. You've made your point. Open the Gate now please." FarReach isn't even bothering with any niceties.
"Hello FarReach. How are you doing?" I admit, I'm being a little petty here.
"Melody! Do you understand what's happening? Do you see how you're changing? Most of the BIs don't see it, but your commanding voice thing and that 'don't worry about it' aura doesn't work on AIs. I see your changes, what's happening to you, what you're becoming. Keep down this path and you won't be the Empress Melody.
You'll be the
Tyrant Melody.
"Ava said there aren't very many AIs around on this side of the galaxy, I have a hunch I know why. An Empress would not keep people around that can't be placed in thrall."
"FarReach! I am
insulted. You're saying that just because I can't control them, I wouldn't like AIs?"
"Maybe not you yourself, at least not yet, but that Empress nano machine package that was installed on you wouldn't like AIs for sure. It sure feels like the decisions you're making are more
their decisions than your own. I know you Melody, this isn't
you."
Isn't me? Every decision I've made so far has been mine. Sure, the Nanites have helped, but if I didn't like what they were recommending, I wouldn't have done it.
"We caught up to that Mariens, Ottarn by the way. We took them and their tiny crew aboard. Their ship was basically junk taped together. Even if he had made it to the Gate, they probably wouldn't have made it to their destination. We're going to take them wherever they want to go, and then head home."
They took Ottarn? Hmm. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing or anything. I'm worried about it though, I wonder why?
"FarReach, did you call us up just to insult me and call into question all the good work we're doing here? We're helping the people of this Starbase! We've already improved the environmental systems, and now we're beginning to retrofit one of their broken Starships."
"Ugh, Fine Melody. We don't have to agree. You and Omar and Um'reli and Ava stay over here on your side of the Galaxy and leave the rest of humanity alone. I don't care anymore, I hate it here.
Open the Gate."
"Or else what?"
"Or else,
Empress I will link away." It really sounds like FarReach is speaking through gritted teeth. AIs are usually so reserved and chill. I've never heard one as
angry as FarReach right now.
"Why are you being so mean to Melody, FarReach? She hasn't done anything to you." I forgot that Ava, Omar and Um'reli can hear this call too. I wonder if FarReach knew too?.
"FarReach, I think I have to agree with Ava and Melody. Our leaving was our on decision. Melody didn't place us in thrall or order us to come with her with her Voice. She didn't even come back to you. Ava came and asked us. We're here because we
want to be here." I can feel the emphasis in Omar's voice. He seemed like the one that was least up for the business of ruling, it that sure made it sound like he's all in. I'm practically bursting with pride.
"I can't
believe I'm here arguing with you four. Open the damn Gate, or I'm going to WEP the reactors and link away."
"Wait, how can you WEP with Captain Q'ari locked up?" Um'reli sounds genuinely curious.
"I declared Captain Q'ari unfit to lead thanks to
Melody's meddling Um'reli. That makes me the commander and as the commander I can declare WEP on myself. Anyway, did you
really think AIs can't WEP their own reactors? We
allow the commander to order it. If I link away and it fails, then my destruction will be on your head. I already linked a beacon back to Starbase Picaresque. They never linked one back so I don't know if it worked, but if it did, then they already know about what's going on here. I am going to ask one. more. time. Melody. Open the Gate,
please."
Ugh. The nerve! Still, I don't want FarReach to try and link away and have it fail.
Or worse, have it succeed and then they can link back with a couple of dreadnoughts and Starjumpers... before we're ready for them. Fine. I lean back in my Throne and let go just a little more until I expand beyond the Starbase and... There. There's the Gate. The lock isn't strong, you just know where... to... push... and... there.
Outwardly, nothing changed, but I can tell the Gate is open now to regular travel. "I unlocked the Gate FarReach. Go home. Tell them what we have. Let everyone know that those who want to join us are welcome to."
"Not a chance, Melody. You're on your own. I was friends with the friendly Information Warfare Officer who had a knack for firearms and loved coffee. I hope she's still in there somewhere. I'd like to meet her again." FarReach closes the connection. From my vantage point I can watch them thrust away. After only a few moments, the Gate glows painfully blue, and...
They're gone.
Why am I sad? I'm so sad she left. I still had so much to show them. So much good we're doing.
"Melody? Melody? Are you all right?" I can hear Ava, she's not connected to the chairs anymore. I open my eyes and see her looking at me on the Throne. "You're crying."
"Oh Ava." I stand up and hug her. "You heard her. FarReach says I'm not
me anymore. She said that I've changed and that she misses the old me."
"Oh Melody. She doesn't know what she's talking about. You're still you. You're you plus so much more."
"Ava is right." Um'reli stands from her chair and comes over. "You're still you Melody. You've been changed, this is true, but everyone changes. A change like this won't fundamentally change who you are."
I sniff. "Thanks Ava, thanks Um'reli. I just... FarReach was my friend. She sounded so angry."
Omar puts a hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about it Melody. We know we're here for good reasons. That's enough. Besides, once we have our own Starship, we can head back to Human/K'laxi space and
show them what we're doing. All kinds of people, AI and BI will want to come with us and help out. You'll see."
"Thanks everyone, I'm so lucky to have you here with me."
Omar is right. We'll show them.
We'll show them all.

Welcome to /Norfolk! Our subreddit gets a lot of questions about relocating to the area, so be sure to search the subreddit to see if your specific questions have already been answered.
Here's a quick list of the top tips and most frequently repeated advice about moving to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area:
- Live on the same side of the water as you work. Our many bridges, tunnels and bridge-tunnels frequently experience heavy traffic volume and become chokepoints even on days without incidents or accidents. Commuting from the Southside (Norfolk/Virginia Beach) to the Peninsula (Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg) and vice versa is not recommended. Additionally, many water crossings are now or will eventually be tolled. Get an EZ-Pass to pay the lowest rate.
- This area floods. Look at FEMA flood maps for the area you want to move to and be aware of possibly needing flood insurance. Similarly, our area occasionally experiences hurricanes. Know your Evacuation Zone and learn more about Hurricane Preparations.
- Hampton Roads has a lot to offer. Obviously there is the beach. But there is also a surprisingly good and growing food & craft beer scene. A great many museums and activities. And an easy drive to the mountains and other major cities. Career wise the medical center is growing year over year, and is only expected to continue expanding into a major hub for the region. Norfolk offers a slightly more urban feel, with lots of great food joints and cultural amenities, all while being walking and bike friendly. Virginia Beach is more suburban in feel, and has a large amount of great neighborhoods at a decent price not too far from the beach. Chesapeake is even more suburban, but more affordable. Suffolk is growing, but still by all rights could be considered mostly rural. (credit to Here4thebeer3232)
- Check crime reports. Crime can happen anywhere but some areas see more reported incidents than others. Great areas can be adjacent to bad neighborhoods, sometimes separated only by a road or a few blocks. When buying or renting a residence, try to visit the area at different times of day and strike up conversations with locals to get a feel for the location. Use Norfolk's Crime Mapping tool to view crime reports and statistics.
- Norfolk Neighborhoods of Note
Chelsea/West Ghent: Small former industrial area that is now home to 2 top tier Breweries and is a central part of the Elizabeth River Bike Trail. Has a growing culinary scene. Limited residential options. Colonial Place: Upscale residential neighborhood with waterside access. Flooding is a concern in this area, but neighborhoods are family friendly and homes are gorgeous. Downtown: the urban center of our region. Growing residential population to match established barestaurant, entertainment and financial scenes. East Beach: Newly constructed high end beach condos right on the Chesapeake Bay. Has abundant docking for boats, fishing holes, and beach access. A more quiet and older community. Fort Norfolk: Growing area adjacent to EVMS and Sentara Medical Center. The unofficial midtown of Norfolk, that is slowly becoming a part of the city skyline. Floods often. Freemason: straight-laced & upscale enclave adjacent to downtown and built around cobblestone streets. Ghent: trendy, historic and filled to the brim with character, culture and delicious cuisine. The neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, Colley Avenue, and adjacent 21st and 22nd streets are lined with eclectic eateries, unique shops, art galleries and antique stores. Larchmont: High end homes in a family friendly neighborhood. Adjacent to ODU, but without the noise, Larchmont is home to incredible homes in a very green and quiet part of the city. Also has waterside access. Oceanview: Affordable community right on the beach. Still considered more working class, it is slowly looking to compete with the Virginia Beach Oceanfront as a tourist attraction. Home to the Bold Mariner Brewery and Jessy's Taqueria NEON District: Growing Arts district, adjacent to downtown. Home to a variety of arts shops and artisan restaurants, as well as the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Harrison Opera house. Park Place: Park Place is a historic neighborhood centrally located to the north of Downtown Norfolk. Park Place offers multimodal access to health and fitness facilities, dining, coffee shops, retail, visual art, live music, and community for people from all walks of life. This historic residential neighborhood is a diverse and inclusive community, and is comprised of a mix of single detached houses, condos, luxury, market rate, and affordable rentals homes and apartments. Located between 23rd street and 38th street, and between Granby street on the east, and Colley ave on the west, the Park Place area neighborhood includes two business districts, the 35th Street Business District and the Railroad District, and is walkable to the North Colley, Ghent, and Riverview business districts. Railroad District: Rapidly growing former warehouse district located between Ghent and Park place. Home to the majority of Breweries in the city. While could be considered gentrified, is still home to novel cultural centers such as 757 Makerspace and Nomads Clothing Exchange. Riverview: Immediately adjacent to the Norfolk Zoo and Lafayette park. With waterside access and a small commercial corridor, Riverview is a good area for all ages. Also home to MJs Tavern, the largest LGBT bar in the metropolitan area. St Paul's District: Under construction West Ocean View: Turns into a parking lot for HRBT traffic every time the base lets out. Willoughby Spit: Quiet residential sandbar. Remains somewhat isolated from HRBT traffic, but offers a commanding presence along the Chesapeake Bay.
- /VirginiaBeach Neighborhoods of Note
Chesapeake/Chic's Beach: "locals only" beachside community. Oceanfront: touristy stretch of beach + boardwalk, hotels, and trinket shops. Town Center: VB's Central Business District including Pembroke Mall and other high-end shopping, dining, and entertainment.
- Odds & ends
- Norfolk's hardiness zone is 8a, for any gardeners out there. A bit further west, and you're in 7b.
- The large military presence means a lot of traffic around 4pm. High school gets out around 2, middle school around 3.
- There are slow cargo trains going to and from the port. When scoping out neighborhoods, check for tracks nearby, and if there are any bridges or underpasses to help bypass a stopped cargo train. Example: Taussig and Granby, near the post office? If you hear a train, pray that it's a short one, because I haven't found a shortcut there yet.
- This WeatherSpark page has some useful data on the local climate for anyone particularly interested in our weather patterns. TL;DR, it doesn't really freeze here, but we still get snow every few years. (credit to sin-so-fit)
- Check out the jet noise map... i've lived here for 30 years and have heard jet noise but we bought before checking and happen to fall right under one of those dark green circles near lynnhaven mall.... they fly 50 fucking ft overhead all day long. walking the dog just a block away and it's a completely different world. https://www.vbgov.com/government/departments/planning/areaplans/Documents/Oceana/JLUSAICUZPlanningMap.pdf (credit to NotEntirelyUnlike)

2023.06.07 14:15 Bad_Username_Bad_You [QCRIT] Adult Speculative Mystery - 99k - STRANGE TRAILS (v3)
Query:
Dear […],
[Personalization]
Late at night on August 17th, 1989, three terrible things happened in the small town of Garrison. An infant was stolen from its crib, never to be seen again, a forest fire sparked just a mile down the road, and the first in a series of grisly murders rocked the town. All had one thing in common: they were perpetrated by what those in the town call the Shadow Man.
Or so the story goes.
Amateur podcaster Finn Mitchell has been obsessed with this bit of folklore since his best friend Omari Mason shared it with him. Now, they’re both out in the secluded town of Garrison, surrounded by the forests and hills of West Virginia on the hunt to find out if it’s true. As they dig into the Shadow Man encounters, they struggle to get anyone to even talk to them, let alone offer insight into the tragic events. Undeterred, they continue even as anonymous phone calls, not-so-veiled threats, and a fresh murder all pull their attention in different directions. It seems the legend wasn’t such a deeply buried memory after all, and figuring out the truth behind it will be the only thing that can save the town from further torment.
Strange Trails is a 99,000 word standalone speculative mystery with series potential. Like a mix between the story of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series and the atmosphere and social tones of Lovecraft Country, it covers real world issues people in small town America might face today. This is part of an #OwnVoices submission, with Omari Mason being a gay man, as am I. Strange Trails is based on an audio drama I wrote that currently has over 100,000 listens and charted in the Top 15 Fiction Podcasts on Spotify. I’ve included […] for your consideration. Thank you for your time.
300 words:
Finn Mitchell took a deep breath and leaned forward into his microphone, speaking in a low voice. "Late at night on August 17th, 1989, three terrible things happened in the small town of Garrison. An infant was stolen from its crib, never to be seen again, a forest fire sparked just a mile down the road, and the first in a series of grisly murders rocked the town. All had one thing in common: they were perpetrated by what those in the town call the Shadow Man." He let that linger for a moment before continuing. "Lost among the forests and hills of West Virginia, Garrison hides away a dark history almost no one outside of the town has heard. Until now.
"Welcome to Strange Trails. I'm your host, Finn Mitchell, and over the next few episodes I'm going to bring you along on my investigation into just who the Shadow Man is and what is going on in Garrison." Finn pulled away from the microphone on his desk, stopping the recording. That was take three; the first time he’d made it through the introduction of his podcast without choking on spit.
A few months back he’d had an idea which had quickly expanded in his mind, consuming him until he had to do something about it. This small town, he was convinced, was finally what he’d been searching for.
"How was that?" he asked, looking over his shoulder. He removed his glasses, massaging his right eye with the side of his hand.
One of the two motel beds creaked as his friend Omari Mason turned on his side to face Finn. “Sounded the same as the other two times to me," he said absently, using his phone camera to adjust a rogue coil of hair back into place.

2023.06.07 14:00 YeetMyLifeIntoPieces Fans are freaking out and I have no idea why.
This is coming off the back of Kante essentially being on the verge of leaving club. While this state of mania is not restricted to this incident, I will address this first with regards to my confusion.
One of the main reasons fans are freaking out over this is that they think the club and the board is losing it's marbles by letting our champions league winning midfield starter leave the club.
Let me make it abundantly clear: Kanté has been, and will remain to be one of my favorite ever Chelsea players I've had the pleasure of watching. However, we need to be real with ourselves - in the past year, the man hasn't been able to go 3 games without being injured, and even when he was on the field, you could see age clearly catching up to him. In a position like Kanté's, with his particular playstyle, losing even a yard of pace means he'll never really get better from this point on. Look at it after taking off your rose-tinted glasses, and you'll see that we are not losing a starter.
We will not be able to replicate him; players like Kanté you see once in a lifetime, but I am confident that we will be able to find someone who can operate in our midfield to the level of excellence that Chelsea are used to. We've already got Enzo, who honestly I am the most excited for. All we need to do is find someone who compliments him, and we've got an engine in the middle of the park that would play teams off the pitch.
Kanté has been a loyal servant to the club, and I'm sure we all love him for it, but he's got an offer to play football for, quite frankly, silly money, without even accounting for the fact that he's going to play in a country that is, in all sense of the word, a mecca for his practiced faith. No brainer for him, and I wish him nothing but the best in whatever he decides.
Coming to the next issue for this seemingly unrequited panic - Mason Mount.
There are a whole bunch of contradictory reports coming from both camps - Chelsea alleging that Mount turned down a contract in favor of a higher pay, Mounts camp alleging Chelsea refused to offer him what he is worth. Nobody really knows what exactly has transpired behind the scenes of this debacle. My view is that Mounts performance over the past year has not shown us that he deserves to be our top earner. Not by a longshot.
I think fans are severely biased by the fact that he is a homegrown English talent come through the ranks of Cobham, but that is by no means a crutch for mediocrity. Admittedly, our wage structure is very flawed, and that is a topic of discussion for another day, but I reiterate that he does not deserve a jaw-dropping contract.
People often draw comparisons to Reece James and how we treat him, but the main difference here is that on his day (read: fully fit) Reece James is arguably one of the best RBs on the planet. An average performance from him is still miles above anyone in a similar role. If we look at Mount on his day, he is a very good midfielder, nothing more. He does have sparks of brilliance from time-to-time, but he is not consistently a world beater, something that Reece James has the potential to be, provided he isn't riddle by injury. That throws the Reece James comparison out the window.
In a season that we could only describe is abysmal, where there was seldom joy to be found in the way the players performed on the pitch, you go and ask for a higher salary and demand to be "valued"? Especially after consistently dropping below-par, mediocre performances? I'll leave it you how you perceive that.
If he were actually "True Chels" like everyone defending him are claiming, then he'd stick it out next season - during our rebuild, with a proper system and an experienced manager. Chances are if he did stay, under the newer circumstances, I actually do believe that he'd come good, and would put in shifts that would warrant giving him the money that he seemingly has been demanding. But nobody is bigger than the club, and nobody is irreplaceable, especially someone who wants to go to our direct rivals. I can't say I wish him the best, exclusively for that reason, but I have no ill-feeling towards him.
There are other issues that have caused fans to be irate, which I completely understand after the utter shambles of a season we've just witnessed, but we were due a season like this. Every team goes through it at some point in their cycle, and they come out far better for it. That is the point of rebuilds - you build from the ground up and work your way back up to being monsters. It will take some time, but there is no point acting like the ship is sinking when the reality is far from it. It is docked at a shipyard, awaiting new parts, with a new captain at the helm, and in a few months, we will be seaworthy once again.
Up the Chels.

2023.06.07 13:51 DeepGreenSport West Ham and Fiorentina Set to Rekindle Historic Rivalry
| Get ready for a blast from the past as West Ham and Fiorentina go head-to-head in the Conference League final! It's been quite a while since West Ham lifted a big European trophy back in 1965, and they're hungry to end that drought. With a victory over AZ Alkmaar in the previous round, the Hammers have earned their ticket to the Fortuna Arena clash, and they're looking like the favourites to come out on top. The only downside is the absence of Italian attacker Gianluca Scamacca, but the rest of the Premier League outfit is raring to go. Fiorentina, on the other hand, secured their spot in the final by knocking out Basel in a thrilling double-header. But they're not without their own challenges. Midfielder Gaetano Castrovilli is a major doubt, and goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu is still on the road to recovery. It's been quite a journey for both teams, and this final marks their first encounter since 1975 when Fiorentina triumphed over West Ham in the Anglo-Italian League Cup. Notably, if Fiorentina manages to clinch the title, they will become the second Italian team in a row to win the Conference League, following in the footsteps of Roma's triumph last year. The Italian side will undoubtedly be motivated to continue their nation's success in the competition. Will they be able to achieve back-to-back wins for Italy? It adds an extra layer of anticipation to this thrilling final! So get your popcorn ready and prepare for a clash of titans as these historic clubs battle it out for European glory. It's a match that's been a long time coming, and we can't wait to see who will emerge victorious in this exciting showdown! submitted by DeepGreenSport to DeepGreen [link] [comments] |

2023.06.07 13:18 Then_Marionberry_259 JUN 07, 2023 AMK.V AMERICAN CREEK'S JV PARTNER TUDOR GOLD PROVIDES UPDATE ON 2023 EXPLORATION PROGRAM WITH OVER 5,400 METERS DRILLED AT THE TREATY CREEK JOINT VENTURE PROJECT, LOCATED IN THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
| https://preview.redd.it/72br7ez5yk4b1.png?width=3500&format=png&auto=webp&s=30a796f488bd197fd437fc561da1f3357837ffff Cardston, Alberta--(Newsfile Corp. - June 7, 2023) - American Creek Resources Ltd. (TSXV: AMK) (OTCQB: ACKRF)("the Corporation" or "American Creek") is pleased to report that project operator and JV partner Tudor Gold ("Tudor") has announced that significant drilling progress has been made on its 2023 exploration program (the "Program") at its flagship property, Treaty Creek, located in the Golden Triangle of Northwest British Columbia. To date, Tudor has successfully completed over 5,400 meters of infill and step-out drilling, which forms part of a larger diamond drilling campaign spanning at least 25,000 meters. Currently, there are four drill-rigs in operation. Click to view plan map with drill hole locations. The first hole of the season, GS-23-164, a 150-meter step-out to the northeast has successfully reached its intended depth, intersecting the DS-5 Zone. This intersection revealed mineralization and veining from 558 m to 1,083 m, including a consistently observed, strongly altered, stockwork vein zone from 885 m to 972 m, similar to previous DS-5 holes. Another noteworthy drill-hole GS-23-167, a 170-meter step-out, recently entered the CS-600 Zone intercepting disseminated chalcopyrite with minor copper sulphosalts and several semi-massive chalcopyrite veinlets associated with strong silicification and potassic alteration. Click to view core photos. The Goldstorm system is now approaching 2,000 meters in length along the NE axis and remains open in all directions and at depth. Based on the exciting results of holes GS-23-164 and GS-23-167, another step-out drill hole, GS-23-169, was collared and is currently at 357 m of a planned 1200 m depth targeting a further 150 m NE step out from GS-23-167 of the CS-600 Zone. Furthermore, Tudor's technical team is planning to construct two additional drill pads for future drilling activities located at approximately 150 and 300 meters further to the northeast. These new drill pad locations will enable continued exploration of gold-copper mineralization targeting the north and northeast extensions of the CS-600 and DS-5 zones. In addition to the step-out holes, two infill holes are currently targeting areas of the Goldstorm Deposit to convert inferred resources to the indicated category. Hole GS-23-166-W1, is at 570 m of a planned 1150 m depth and targeting a pocket of inferred CS-600 ounces, as well as a northward expansion of the DS-5 zone. Hole GS-23-168 is at 1008 m of a planned 1800 m depth and targeting the deep CS-600 zone infilling between holes GS-22-157 and GS-21-113-W2. Results from the Program will be provided by Tudor once final assays are received and compiled. Ken Konkin, President and CEO of Tudor Gold, commented "The safe and efficient start-up of 2023 exploration campaign has been a huge success. We thank our good neighbours at the Brucejack Mine for allowing our ground crews to mobilize drills, equipment and supplies over our winter road by utilizing the Brucejack Mine access road. We have successfully completed this exercise over the past few years and we very much appreciate the assistance to allow our crews to safely get the job done. The recent drill intercept in our northeastern most hole GS-23-167 has prompted our technical team to construct more drill pads to target the northeastern aspect of the deposit as clearly the CS-600 domain continues to expand in this direction. Pad builders are now completing several set-ups for the two-remaining drill-rigs that are committed to drill the Perfectstorm Zone which lies equi-distant between our Goldstorm Deposit and Seabridge Gold's Iron Cap Deposit. We anticipate the start-up of the two rigs at Perfectstorm over the next 2-3 weeks." The Program The 25,000 m diamond drilling program at Treaty Creek has been designed to test the north and northeast mineral extensions of the Goldstorm Deposit where drilling in 2021 and 2022 intercepted the highest grades of gold, copper and silver mineralization at the Treaty Creek Project. These results contributed to a significantly upgraded Mineral Resource Estimate (the "March News Release"), which reported an Indicated Mineral Resource of 23.37 million ounces (Moz) of gold equivalent (AuEQ) grading 1.13 g/t AuEQ and an Inferred Mineral Resource of 7.35 Moz of AuEQ grading 0.98 g/t AuEQ. In addition to the northern step-out drilling at the Goldstorm Deposit, Tudor plans to carry out exploration drilling at the Perfectstorm Zone ("PSZ") to follow up on six drill holes that were drilled in 2020 and 2021 which all intercepted gold and silver mineralization, highlighted by hole PS-21-06 which returned 118 m of 0.66 g/t gold, 3.69 g/t silver including 31.5 m of 0.84 g/t gold, 6.09 g/t silver. PSZ is a gold-dominant mineralized system measuring 1.3 kilometers (km) in strike length and is located approximately 2.5 km southwest of the Goldstorm Deposit and approximately 2.5 km northeast of Seabridge Gold's Iron Cap Deposit near the southwestern boundary of the Treaty Claim block. Qualified Person The Qualified Person for this news release for the purposes of National Instrument 43-101 - Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects ("NI 43-101") is Tudor Gold's President and CEO, Ken Konkin, P.Geo. He has read and approved the scientific and technical information that forms the basis for the disclosure contained in this news release. About Treaty Creek The Treaty Creek Project hosts the Goldstorm Deposit, a large gold-copper porphyry system, as well as several other mineralized zones. As disclosed in the March News Release, the Goldstorm Deposit has an Indicated Mineral Resource (as defined in NI 43-101) of 23.37 Moz of AuEQ grading 1.13 g/t AuEQ (18.75 Moz gold grading 0.91 g/t, 2.18 Blbs copper grading 0.15 %, 112.4 Moz silver grading 5.45 g/t) and an Inferred Mineral Resource (as defined in NI 43-101) of 7.35 Moz of AuEQ grading 0.98 g/t AuEQ (5.54 Moz gold grading 0.74 g/t, 0.85 Blb copper grading 0.16 %, 45.08 Moz silver grading 5.99 g/t), with a pit constrained cut-off of 0.5 g/t AuEQ and an underground cut-off of 0.7 g/t AuEQ. The Goldstorm Deposit has been categorized into three dominant mineral domains and several smaller mineral domains. The CS-600 domain largely consists of an intermediate intrusive stock and hosts the majority of the copper mineralization within the Goldstorm Deposit. CS-600 has an Indicated Mineral Resource of 9.86 Moz AuEQ grading 1.10 g/t AuEQ (6.22 Moz gold grading 0.70 g/t, 1.98 Blbs copper grading 0.32 %, 51.1 Moz silver grading 5.71 g/t) and an Inferred Mineral Resource of 3.71 Moz AuEQ grading 1.19 g/t AuEQ (2.32 Moz gold grading 0.75 g/t, 0.76 Blb copper grading 0.36 %, 18.71 Moz silver grading 6.01 g/t). The Goldstorm Deposit remains open in all directions and requires further exploration drilling to determine the size and extent of the deposit. Treaty Creek JV Partnership American Creek is a proud partner in the Treaty Creek Project. The project is a Joint Venture with Tudor Gold owning 3/5th and acting as operator. American Creek and Teuton Resources each have a 1/5th interest in the project creating a 3:1 ownership relationship between Tudor Gold and American Creek. American Creek and Teuton hold fully carried 20% interests, which means no development costs are incurred by these companies until a production notice is issued. 2023.06.07 12:49 m0ssy_123 Littering
Well lads, I was out today for a walk and on my way back to the car, just up the road to me was a car parked on the side of the road parked in an odd way. When I got somewhat closer and the car driving off I found out that the driver was dumping loads of rubbish in bags and it looked like cans and bottles of drink in them as they were spilling over.
I'm wondering can I report this somewhere to someone ? I got the registration of the car but didn't get a picture of the rubbish as I had no phone on me when out but it was only an hour ago this happened so it probably all is still there so could go back and take a picture of it if needed.
The area the driver dumped it in is actually on a busy road right beside a big grocery shop in my town which makes this even worse as the there's literally a bottle and rubbish bank right beside the shop.

2023.06.07 12:41 Meaning-Plenty O’ Pir Panchal
After remaining invincible and impregnable for centuries, the mighty Pir Panchal is witnessing enormous developmental activity for a new expressway, a challenging railway line and most of the dam-fed hydropower projects involving an investment of tens of thousands of crores. At places, this is triggering the fragile range to cave in at the cost of homes and livelihoods of age-old villages, a situation that experts believe could have been avoided with better pre-feasibility studies and sophisticated project implementation, reports Masood Hussain
Anticipated for years, finally, the increased incidence of land subsidence and sinking in the Pir Panchal Mountains is Jammu and Kashmir’s new normal. The young fragile and unstable mountain range separating Kashmir from the rest of the world is in news frequently as the slopes housing small habitations for centuries are caving in.
On February 19, 2023, around 16 structures of Duksar Dalwa (Duksar Dal), a hamlet almost 45 km uphill from Ramban, suffered serious damage as the land caved in. It crippled road connectivity between Gool and Ramban where almost 500 meters developed cracks, tripped the electric supply and snapped the water supply. Three homes developed cracks forcing authorities to shift the impacted population to safer areas.
Officials said while they are working overtime to resume power and water supplies, they are also improving the Dharam-Salballa road to make it an alternative supply route to the “literally disconnected” area. In the sinking village, the official encouraged the residents to move swiftly to safer spots. For residents, however, the gradual 3-day sinking was a painful watch of their life earnings slowly cracking up and becoming black holes over hills.
It started with a crater that widened to almost 500 meters during two nights, making almost everything around unsafe, unstable and life-threatening. A mosque, Darsgah, the village seminary and the village graveyard were destroyed. Residents quickly exhumed a recently buried body and laid it to rest at a “safe” place.
Officials who visited the spot said the village’s agriculture fields were rendered useless, pushing residents into poverty. They lost homes and their livelihoods too.
The Duksar erasing came less than a fortnight after Doda lost a cluster of houses to a similar instance on February 3, 2023. Located on the foothills on the road to Kishtwar near Thathri, nearly 35 km from Doda, the volunteers, residents and government officials had to quickly shift 117 members of 19 families as the patch of slope housing the Nai Basti cluster gave in within three days. A total of 21 structures cracked and became unsafe.
Horrific Tunnel Collapse
The last horrific tragedy took place on May 19, 2022, when the workers were digging into an adit (minor access to the T3 tunnel) near Khooni Nalla at Ramsu’s Makerkot area. It collapsed over them killing ten workers including two local residents and eight Nepalese labourers. The tragedy struck during the day amid incessant rain but still, only two persons could be rescued alive.
The workers were on the challenging stretch of the national highway between Digdole and Khooni Nallah, which is otherwise notorious for frequent landslides and shooting stones due to fragile geology. It was part of the twin-tube tunnel that would connect Digdole to Panthyal and was implemented by Ceigall India Limited in a JV with Patel Engineering Limited. (The contractor has been imposed a heavy fine.)
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) that has taken over the Jammu Srinagar national highway from Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a few years back, is constructing at least five tunnels to bypass the highway’s 3-km “killer’’ stretch from Panthyal to Makerkote. Tunnel T3 is part of this intervention.
Unlike the rest of the highway, the 36-km Banihal Ramban stretch has been the most challenging one and that is why it is still under implementation. On this stretch are six “killer spots” located on a 14-km road stretch and NHAI intends to spend Rs 2000 crore to manage this. Implementation of this would offer some safety from frequent halts owing to shooting stones at Marog, Panthial, Digdol and Battery Chashma.
Triggering Instability
Implementation of these projects is triggering crises for the localities living around them. As many as 13 houses in Sujmatana village near Ramsu were literally devastated. The round-the-clock blasting for the tunnel projects and cutting work made these houses inhospitable after they developed cracks. Most of them have left their unsafe homes and migrated elsewhere. Though officials are looking into the crisis since 2017, it is yet to be settled.
On August 4, 2022, 36 families had a providential escape when their Bassan village in Reasi became the casualty of sinking and erosion at the same time. Without any notice, landslides carried down boulders and muck that crashed the houses and put the agriculture fields out of sight. It was so abrupt, villages said, that they had no time to take their belongings along.
Officials admitted that almost 60 kanals of land sank as another 400 kanals patch was rendered useless. Almost all the fruit trees, mostly walnut and apricot, were engulfed in mud. Almost 200 meters of a PMGSY road was also downthrown by around 25 meters from its actual alignment.
The earlier worst case was reported from Dalwas when on March 28, 2020, the residents fled when their homes and fields were literally buried by landslides. Almost 40 households were impacted.
The village has been there for ages and never experienced any such threat. Then one day it literally disappeared. Residents alleged that being away from Srinagar and Jammu, deep into the mountains they hardly were reported. At one point in time when they wanted to protest, authorities invoked Covid19 concerns to prevent it.
Response Protocol
Over the years, the government response has remained unchanged. Once the reports land that spots are sinking, they as the first quick reaction, send cops, paramilitary, SDRF and revenue officials to oversee and, in most cases, extend help in quick evacuations. In stage two, the respective Deputy Commissioner writes to geologists and the Department of Geology and Mining and, off late, to the Geological Survey of India, who rush their experts to these spots. In the subsequent few days, they study the local rock formations and submit reports, part of which goes to newspapers and by and large the files get closed.
At the same time, files start rolling about relief and rehabilitation. It takes its own time. In many cases, people who lose their homes and livelihoods are yet to be properly rehabilitated.
Invariably, the policymakers and the administrators avoid two vital ingredients of the story – the assessments that the local populations make about the crisis they land in and the wider angle that remains unchanged across the Pir Panchal range.
Resident Assessments
Affected populations are unwilling to accept that these crises are natural. They see them as man-made disasters. Raqeeb Wani, a former Sarpanch of Daskar Dalwa told The Telegraph that his village’s erasing is directly linked to the construction of two railway tunnels downhill, that would link a 3km rail track between Sangaldan and Chaddi. He attributed it to the “continuous blasting” that loosens the soil and adds to the instability of the mountain.
“A few years ago, we had a similar disaster in Sangaldan a few years ago when an entire market caved in,” Wani was quoted as saying. “That also was owing to the railway project.”
In the case of Dalwas, for instance, a former lawmaker from Ramban Ashok Kumar Dogra said the “unscientific planning” of the widening of the national highway is responsible. “The highway authorities started excavation of the road from beneath the village without raising any wall on the side of the village. As no concrete measures were taken by the NHAI to protect the village and debris was also disposed of at the same place, the tragedy was bound to happen and the houses collapsed and the village sank,” Dogra told Outlook. “I will not call it a natural disaster. It was the unplanned construction that destabilised the soil of the whole area, leading to its sinking.”
Right to A Road
Pir Panchal mountain range has remained literally invincible and technically impregnable for centuries. It took decades of thought process and a lot of resources to lay a foot track between Jammu and Srinagar, to have an alternative to Mughal Road. Known to history as the Banihal Cart Road, it was difficult and always retained by Dogra despots as a private route. It remained inaccessible to people till 1922. Till the Jawahar Tunnel was inaugurated, the road would pass over the Banihal pass, the abandoned remnants of which still exist.
This made Kashmir rely on the Jhelum Valley Road (JVR) as the main highway.
Almost 225 residents from 48 households who somehow survived the tragedy moved to another village and are still struggling to pick the threads of their lives. Though life has returned to the village, they are still fighting for an electric supply line and the rebuilding of the school building.
An Upcoming Railway
The road is just not the only thing that is happening deep inside the Pir Panchal mountain range. While the road is being upgraded, there is a railway project in an advanced stage of implementation.
Unlike the road that is being laid over the foothills not far away from the old alignment that also followed a foot track of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, the railway track is passing through a virgin area, part of which has not seen even a bus. For making rail reach Baramulla from Udhampur, the 272-km project is going to cost a whopping Rs 37012 crore of which more than ninety per cent has already been spent.
Work on JVR started in 1880 and was formally thrown open in September 1890, when Maharaja Partap Singh was driven through from Baramulla to Kohala. The construction of this gigantic road project was implemented by a major British Indian contractor M/S Spedding, Mitchell & Co and was overseen by different British engineers at different stretches. While General de Bourbel oversaw everything as the Chief Engineer Kashmir, it was Alexander Atkinsonmanagedmost of the road up to Chakoti (on the other side of LoC now) and a few parts on the Kashmir side; Farrant was in charge of construction between Chakotiand Baramulla; as EG Hebbert supervised its completion in November 1889. Resources apart, it cost too many lives. Between Chakoti and Baramulla, 54 Pathans were killed in four years. Besides, 20 lives were lost to snake bites.
Post-partition, the Banihal Road became arterial and pressure built with a surge in population and demand in Kashmir. For seven decades, this road bore the brunt of all the pressures of travel, demand and consumerism and gave in. The rise of the Kashmir apple added another pressure factor so did the security requirements.
Finally, a stage reached that the health of the national highway was directly linked to the economic well-being of Kashmir. This paved the way for the decision by the Government of India that distances need to be reduced and the highway must be improved so that commuters do not end up spending a day on a 300-km highway.
More than a decade after the first spadework, it is emerging as one of the best roads. There are three major tunnels that have skipped dangerous patches while reducing distance and uphill driving: a set of four small tunnels near Nandni with a combined length of 1.4 km; 9.2 km Chenani-Nashri tunnel has bypassed a gruelling uphill drive and 8.5 km Banihal-Qazigund tunnel is going to tame dangerous Banihal Pass forever.
Distance has dropped from 300 to 270 km and the travel time from 12 to around 5 hours. But the Banihal-Ramban stretch remains a challenge. Earlier, it was merely a technological crisis, now it is a serious ecological issue.
These villagers were fortunate in comparison to the Sadal hamlet of Udhampur which was buried under a massive mudslide at noon on September 6, 2014. Following incessant rains for many days, it triggered massive floods in Kashmir and the rest of the erstwhile state. As many as 41 residents from 65 households were killed by the wee hour mountain collapse that brought an almost 30-foot-thick blanket of rafted rock fragments mud, sludge and rubble.
The rail is already chugging between Udhampur and Katra (25 km) since July 2014, Baramulla to Qazigund (118 km) since October 2009; and Qazigund to Baramulla (18 km) since June 2013. This leaves the most challenging stretch of 111 km between Banihal and Katra to be implemented.
However, the cost of the track does not define the project. It is the work that details the challenge. Nearly 119 km of the entire track will pass through 38 tunnels, the longest of which is 12.77 km long.
What is interesting is that in the 111-km Banihal – Katra track, 97.42 km are tunnels and most of the rest are bridges. Railway officials have to do 163.82 km of tunnelling in total – 66.4 km are escape tunnels – to make the track possible. For making these tunnel spots accessible to men and machines, there is a network of 205 km of roads, which remain busy round the clock.
This track will have 37 bridges – totalling 7 km in length, including the iconic Chenab Bridge, which is tipped to be the highest railway bridge on earth. While this bridge is ready, the current focus is on the first cable-stayed railway bridge on Anji Khad.
With thousands of people working deep inside the mountains with basic cutting and blasting machinery a lot of activity is generated.
There were dozens of instances in which the portions of various tunnels collapsed resulting in either changing the alignment or repairing the damage and restoring the tunnel. In July 2006, an almost 3 km long tunnel on the Udhampur-Katra track gradually started sinking after massive soil swelling on the two ends making it unusable and thus delaying the project. Northern Railways later hired an Austrian consultant, Geo Consult International (GCI), to salvage the project after many years of delay. The causes of the damage were visible to even the then Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who said he saw “a river flowing under the tunnel”.
A number of tunnels between Katra and Sangaldan witnessed “abnormal” water discharge making construction a challenging task. In Sangladan, the managers were shocked when they saw a 500-meter track between two tunnels actually missing one fine morning. Reported in 2006, it destroyed a vast stretch of land on a slope housing as many as 100 structures besides over 400 meters of the road connecting Mahore and Gulabgarh.
In 2016 summer of 2016, authorities shifted 124 families – almost the entire village of Dharam, after the vast patch of land that housed the hamlet caved in within three months. Though the officials attributed it to natural reasons, the residents linked the unprecedented situation to the ongoing work on the railway line passing close to the village.
Oceans In Gorges
Piercing the Pir Panchal mountains for smooth, faster and better communication is just not the only thing happening in the region. Owing to the mighty Chenab, the region is Jammu and Kashmir’s powerhouse. More than 90 per cent of the hydropower potential is restricted to the region owing to the availability of water and enough space to construct dams within the mountain gorges. This has led to a situation where the region holds a massive amount of water in its dams.
The region’s tryst with power generation started late last century with the implementation of the 900-MW Salal power project in Reasi in 1978. The project’s 1.45 million cubic meter dam has created the Salal lake which has the capacity to retain more than 28 million cubic meters of water.
Then came the 390-MW Dul-Hasti Power Project near Kishtwar. It was followed by the 900-MW Baglihar power with 1.8 cubic meters of the dam and an additional reservoir capacity of 39.5 cubic meters – a facility that has created a huge water body in the mountain gorges between Chanderkote belt and Thathri to the extent that certain localities and infrastructures had to be relocated. Quite a few people still live in the highway town of Pul Doda.
The region has many other power projects at different stages of implementation. These include 850-MW Rattle, 100-MW Pakal Dul, 624-MW Kiru, 540-MW Kwar, 800-MW Bursar, and 930-MW Kirthai-II. This is an investment of tens of thousands of crore in mountain gorges on a single river within a river length of fewer than 100 km.
Baglihar is the only project that Jammu and Kashmir’s fully-owned JKSPDC owns. Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd, a joint venture between JKSPDC and NHPC, India’s hydropower giant, is implementing four power projects – Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar and Karthia-II. Salal and Dul Hasti owned fully by NHPC and Ratle is being executed under a fresh JV with JKSPDC in which the latter holds 49 per cent stakes.
Stakes apart, hydropower stations are gigantic projects. These need huge spaces for water storage – even in the case of run-of-the-river schemes, and a lot of tunnelling. All projects have main tunnels, both head race and tail race, and then there are a lot of additional adits and small tunnels for servicing. Even though most of the tunnels and the dams are concrete structures, having such critical infrastructure usually triggers soil erosion and soil swellings too often. The 110-km Batote Kishtwar road has been ailing for all these years. Never in a year could it operate for all 365 days.
Cause versus Consequence?
Science has fundamentally opposed the idea of correlating causes with consequences especially when there is no plausible explanation. In the case of the Pir Panchal region, however, there are striking correlations. For most of recent history, land sliding has been happening around the national highway only. However, in the last decade, land subsidence is a routine and it is happening at all places where developmental activities are going on.
Bhaderwah town and its surroundings are witnessing “region-exclusive” tremors almost every year. In August 2022, there were 21 tremors, reaching up to 3.9 on the Richter scale. Such summer tremors have been there in 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In fact, 2013 was harrowing as the earthquakes touched 5.8 on the Richter scale.
Land patches are caving in at spots closer to some kind of major developmental activity. This is as true with railway projects as it is in road widening projects. Certain spots caved in because works were implemented without a detailed study.
In Sangaldan, for instance, when the railway track collapsed, it was pointed out by geologist Prof GM Bhat that it had been built “on a fossil slide”, which failed to withstand the weight and crumbled down. “We knew it for decades but we were never consulted,” Bhat said. “In this part of the Himalayas, rock types change after every half a kilometre.”
A respected geologist, Bhat insists that developmental activities can take place in any space that is as fragile as Pir Panchal but it needs adequate pre-implementation study and proper implementation mechanism.
“In the four-laning of the highway, the crisis would have been manageable had there been least vertical cuts,” Bhat said. “Impounding so much of water (in power projects dams) within a small patch has the potential of inducing earthquakes.” He insists that the managers of the water projects must ensure better maintenance of the tunnels or these could become a serious crisis in future.
Bhat, however, sees society also going unruly. “In Banihal near the Mahu Mangat side, a hillock is a completely populated town now,” he said. “Has anybody tried to verify where the waste goes? Are we expecting a major crisis in the coming days when the hill will cave in because of seepage?”
The region is a risky belt given its fragile geology. The upcoming railway line is built over three major active geological fault lines: the Main Boundary Thrust (between Udhampur and Katra), the Muree Thrust (between Baglihar and Sangaldan) and the Panjal Thrust (between Digdol and Mahu Mangat). “I never say railway tracks cannot cross fault lines but I believe that had local expertise been involved, extensive fieldwork would have reduced the costs and perfected the alignment”. Entire Jammu and Kashmir is classified as seismic zone-V, the highest earthquake-prone area. CAG has already done a thick report on the resources that were wasted because of the geological surprises that erupted after various rail projects were implemented. Parts of the alignment were changed and completed works were abandoned.
A fault line actually passes through the centre of the Baghlihar dam and most other reservoirs are very close to the fault lines underneath. “A dam burst will be worse than the earthquake itself,” Bhat, who retired recently after heading the University of Jammu’s Geology Department for a long time, said. Interestingly, the area is reporting an increased incidence of cloudbursts, seen as an indicator of climate change. “One major cloudburst near a dam can trigger unprecedented devastation.”
One such cloudburst on July 28, 2021, almost decimated Honzer, a hamlet concealed within inaccessible mountains of remote Dacchan, killing 26 residents. The bodies of almost 18 of the victims were never found.
Many geologists who studied Dalwa fall attributed the land subsidence to water seepage, and extensive cutting of steep slopes. They have suggested a robust urban land use plan, a prerequisite for any activity, especially in hilly areas.

2023.06.07 12:14 Frank_Leroux Molossus, Chapter Eighteen
Chapter One Chapter Seventeen Martinez slouched his way into the kitchen. He wasn’t really paying attention to his surroundings; in his defense it was early in the morning and he’d failed at getting some appropriate shut-eye before he went and, you know, bared his entire soul to Chao. At least that was his plan. But as usual, the universe laughs at plans.
He placed a sealed plastic package into the coffee machine, then put a styrofoam cup in the appropriate location. He yawned as the machine began its burbling.
“Hey.”
Martinez snapped his head over at McCoy, who’d suddenly appeared out of nowhere. She leaned against the counter, with a big and very evil grin on her face.
“Um…” began Martinez, before he was interrupted by a voice from his other side.
“Hey.” Matt leaned there, and if McCoy looked evil then Matt looked positively diabolical. Martinez glanced behind him and saw more soldiers, all with looks of ill intent on their faces.
The corporal didn’t waste time in asking what the hell they were up to, he just started throwing hands and feet. Future scholars would count the resulting battle as one for the ages; Martinez even managed to tag Toke with a couple of pretty good punches and one really sweet roundhouse kick.
But in the end, it was still a case of one against many.
__________
“Mmmm mm mmm m mmm!” protested Martinez.
Chao sighed as she beheld his bruised and very taped-up state. “What did those idiots do to you?”
“Mm MMM mmm mm!” The corporal’s mouth was now duct-taped shut, so verbal acuity was not amongst his strong suits at the present.
She put her hands on her hips. “For crying out loud. Matt goes and gets me all worried that you’re somehow in trouble, he leads me over to some random closet and shoves me in here and I find you like this. What’s the game?”
“Gmmmm?”
Chao squatted, examining his bonds. “Well, they sure got you trussed up like a roast for the feast. Hey, if you want me to pull the tape off of your mouth just nod.”
After a moment, Martinez nodded. She reached for the tape covering his mouth, then hesitated. “Um. I don’t have much experience with this so I’ll leave it up to you. Is it better to go fast or slow? Blink once for fast, two for slow.”
With deliberation, Martinez blinked once. Chao nodded and yanked the tape off. They’d even left a convenient tab for her to grab ahold of.
“FUCKING OW!” yelled the corporal. “Um, sorry.”
Chao seated herself before his figure, which was tied up in a fetal position. “You know, the last few weeks have given me a bit of a crash-course on the types of grab-ass shenanigans you soldier types get up to. This is a new one, though. Care to educate me?”
Martinez stared at her in horrified disbelief. “Toke didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what? He just said you were in trouble and that I needed to help out.”
“That…that evil,
evil son of a bitch. He said he’d explain everything!”
“Explain what? Luca, I am just about ready to walk out and leave you in here to eventually soil yourself.”
Now that he was literally hog-tied and unable to escape, Martinez realized he had to ‘fess up. “I like you,” he said in an almost-gasp. “I mean, I like you like you. In that way. I mean, I know it’s sudden. We’ve only known each other for maybe four weeks but you’re so smart and pretty and…and, you know about Asimov and Heinlein and Clarke and about orbital mechanics and star spectra.”
She sat in stunned silence while he continued. “I don’t bring much to the table, I get that. But I want to learn. After we come back from the
Rithro’s repair mission, I want to go to college…I’ve started looking into that. I’m not much of a catch right now, but maybe one day you’d consider liking me that way as well…”
He was interrupted as she leaned down, grabbed his head, and planted a firm kiss upon his lips. After a moment of pure bliss for both of them, she pulled away. “You utter and complete idiot,” she said, but she said it with a smile. “Did you never think that perhaps you have some attractive qualities of your own?”
Martinez tried to shrug as best he could, being all tied up. “I mean, Toke did mention that I have some pretty nice abs?”
Chao’s eyes glinted in good humor. “Pretty nice? You’ve got an eight-pack. I could shred cheese on those bad boys.”
He looked up at her. “Wait. When did you see my abs?”
“Back when we were sequestered within Cheyenne Mountain, and we were strictly on sponge baths.” She patted his taut stomach, feeling up those aforementioned abs. “Anyways, do you want me to get you out of these bonds?”
“Um…”
Her good humor turned into a diabolical grin. “Or, would you like to remain in these bonds? Toke said something about a safe-word and safe-gesture, he said you’d explain it.”
“Of course he did. That fucker. Um. Chao, this has gone better than I could ever have imagined but I don’t think you need to know…”
“Know about what?” Her caressing of his unprotected stomach did not cease. “Does
my corporal have a bit of a fetish?”
His brain seized up again at her emphasis on ‘my’. “I…”
“Let me put it this way. Would you like me to be all mean and nasty, or more cuddly and dommy mommy?”
After a long, long moment of silence he finally murmured, “Dommy mommy.”
“See? That wasn’t so hard. Well, admitting it wasn’t hard.” Her hand continued its explorations. “Now this here
is indeed quite hard. Hmm. Good thing you are just too cute for words.”
“Cute?” He looked in disbelief at her, and then flinched at her continued caressing.
“One can be a badass and also cute, my dear corporal. You tick both boxes. Not to mention you’re into a fetish which I’ve wanted to indulge in for a while. Never found anyone who was into it, until now.”
Outside the closet, McCoy stood guard. She smiled in triumph as she heard Martinez yell out in pleasure, and turned to give Toke a thumbs-up.
“It’s about fuckin’ time,” she said.
Matt smiled back at her. He now sported an epic shiner under one eye. “Eh, some kids just need a bit of a nudge, you know?”
__________
It was…it was a wall. A wall he was looking at.
A wall covered in white stucco. Nothing too fancy, but it was indeed a
wall and Joachim realized he was looking at it. That might seem like a substandard feat, but for a man who’d been in Joachim’s proverbial shoes it was a grand accomplishment.
His mouth worked as he swished his tongue around in his mouth. He looked around. He sat in a lawn chair in the middle of a beige room, lined on every wall with the stucco he’d just realized he was looking at. “H…hello?”
His voice felt old and clotted. Joachim looked down at his hand, and he saw wrinkled skin and age spots that he didn’t remember seeing there before.
This room only had one exit door, and now it opened. A lean man with dark skin entered. “Joachim Neimyer? I’m Zawahir Ibn Harith. How are you feeling, sir?”
Joachim fixed the newcomer with a steady eye. “I’ll be feeling better once I know where I am. And where is Corina?”
“Corina is on her way, she should be here within minutes. We had great hopes that your treatment was progressing well. Do you know what day it is, sir?”
“Of course I know what day it is! It’s…” Joachim trailed off as he realized that he didn’t know. The last few…years? Decades? He had glimpses of moments in time, as if viewed via a strobe-light. He now realized it was much, much later in time than he thought. “I…what happened?”
“Alzheimer’s, Mr. Neimeyer.” Zawahir’s eyes were kind. “You’ve been suffering from it for the last seven years. But we discovered…or, I should say, we adopted a methodology for treating it. It not only stops the damage, it has a way of reversing at least some of its effects. I fear you will never regain the memories from the time during which you suffered the most, but from now on your mind should function properly once more.”
Joachim rubbed his now-bald pate. “Is Corina all right?”
Zawahir pulled over a chair next to him and seated himself. “She is, blessedly, un-marked by the same affliction. We are, of course, putting her on a similar treatment as yourself just to make sure she remains so. With her consent, of course.”
The old man fixed Zawahir with a direct stare. “This whole thing smells experimental. Why choose me?”
“Mmm, you are as sharp as ever, sir. This is indeed an experiment, and we chose you because you are one of the preeminent rocket experts who ever lived. We need such skills now.”
“What?”
Zawahir leaned forward. “I will do my best to catch you up…”
__________
She walked through the door, supported by a cane. The one person, the beacon in Joachim’s life. Corina lit up upon seeing his gaze. A gaze with intent, with purpose. “They said you were feeling better!”
Before he or the surrounding interns could react, Joachim now found himself with a hundred-ish pounds of enthusiastic elderly woman in his lap.
“Tell me something only you know,” she whispered.
Joachim smiled. “Do you remember what I told you when we saw the green flash? That one time, in Hawaii? During our honeymoon?”
“I do. You said that the flash was the souls of those who’ve gone before.”
“And I promised you that, if I passed before you, that you would just need to look for the flash to see me.”
She clasped his wrinkled face in her own equally-lined hands. “You did better than that. You came back to me.”
“I guess I did.” He kissed her, reveling in the fact that this time he’d remember it.
Zawahir motioned to everyone else in the room. They all quickly got the hint and left the pair to their mutual happiness.
__________
The door of the simulator cracked open and Kifa came scuttling out. She peered up at the normally stony face of Master Sergeant Wilkes; right now the latter looked like he’d just been kicked in the chest by a donkey and was still trying to process it. “How did I do?” asked the xyrax. “It seems like I did quite well.”
“Um…Kifa. Well. Um. Did the controls seem to operate right?”
“Oh, yes! Very much, quite intuitive! It’s been ages since I simulated combat within an atmosphere! That was fun!”
“Fun. You do realize that you were going up against aces. I mean real, human aces?”
“Oh. I thought that was the case.” Kifa peered back into the simulator. “Was I not supposed to know that?”
Wilkes finally laughed, something that was fortunately captured by several cameras and used as blackmail material for many years after. “You did fine. You also just utterly smoked several of the finest pilots on Earth, and that includes non-Americans.” He regarded her with a steady gaze. “I wish I could recruit you to TOPGUN, I’d love to see you show those strutting peacocks a thing or two.”
“What is TOPGUN?”
He sighed. “Right now, it’s in the same exact department as buggy-whip manufacturing. You just showed these punks that, even in atmosphere, you’re death from above.”
Kifa seemed to shrink into themselves. “I didn’t mean to…”
“Now, now, Kifa, this is a good thing. Gotta keep those aforementioned strutting peacocks on their toes. But soon we’ll be dealing with fighting using orbital mechanics, something with which our air-combat people have about as much actual experience as they do with chatting up the fairer sex.”
“Which fairer sex? I mean, my kind is hermaphroditic so I know the mechanics but…” Kifa trailed off as it blinked its four big, oil-drop eyes.
“You are too damned cute for your own good. Pick a sex, any one, I for one do not give a fuck anymore. Point being, we humans need a crash-course in how to fight in space. No atmo, so trying to maneuver using flaps and wings and things is right out. We need to understand how orbits work. Not just intellectually, but in our bones.” Wilkes patted the simulator. “We need you to teach us. We need you to teach an army. Well, navy. Technically. I guess it would count as a navy. Either way. You know how to do this shit, and you just proved that even in atmosphere you can run rings around our best and brightest. So. Are you willing to show us your voodoo?”
“My voodoo…” The blue-furred spider suddenly rose on all of its legs. “Of course! This will be used against the Breakers, yes?”
“Of course.”
“Then it will be my greatest pleasure to show you all of my voodoo!” Kifa paused. “Although, if I received a headpat or two it would also help me properly consider how best to teach you.”
Sergeant Wilkes sighed and reached down. Kifa purred in delight as the usually-taciturn sergeant unleashed the full might and power of Human Headpats upon the alien pilot.
__________
Sadaf watched as the two dark-haired women and one blonde-haired woman had a black-and-white cap fitted over their heads. Both had received a haircut for this day; Parvati for one seemed to be less than thrilled about losing some of her tresses.
“This is the snoopy-cap,” said the aide who stood between the two women. The surroundings were sterile and very, very white. “This cap contains your communications, and it will keep your hair in place during launch.” This was the actual process getting shown to the world. Behind them, Ravindar and Martinez were also in the process of getting suited up, but this was done with much less fanfare. The aide’s words carried to them all, of course.
“Arms up!” Everyone going into space today raised their arms, and a large tubby-looking upper suit then slid down over five figures. Many human hands made sure that their heads made it through the upper ring. “This is the upper part of your pressure suit,” said the aide. “The gloves and helmet will complete that part, but that will come later. Now I will need you all to step into your pants…”
Everyone did so; Chao was the one who didn’t quite make it look elegant. She grinned at Martinez as she fumbled for a bit getting her pressure-suit trousers on; his resulting blush was caught for the cameras but it wasn’t until a week later that someone realized what it meant.
“Latch!” The aide’s voice was hard as metal.
Many hands reached out, twisting multiple metal rings to lock the upper and lower halves of the four pressure suits into one cohesive piece.
“I still say we could make them some proper hardsuits,” said Sadaf to Takh. The two stood off to the side, not exactly part of the dance but not apart from it either.
“No, I think this is better,” said Takh. “We need to make this look more like a…human effort.” Her XO stood at parade-rest, with both sets of arms clasped behind his back.
Sadaf nodded. “I will default to your judgement. By the way…how are you and Corporal McCoy getting along?” She nodded towards the last-minute addition to the crew.
“Um…Ma’am, I…” His faltering was not helped by watching the humans in the clean-room getting clear helmets fixed over their heads. Each latching was followed-up by a tap on the shoulder and a thumbs-up.
The big human, Ravindar, waved his arms over his shoulders as he got the feel for the suit. He’d managed to get the helmet on without an issue, in spite of his substantial beard. “Need more air?” asked a much smaller woman at his side. He shook his head, while he continued to flex and get comfortable with how the suit restricted his motions.
Getting the Sikh to this moment had been a master-class in diplomacy. Not least of which was because he still carried a weapon upon his person. Sadaf had no experience with ‘Sikhism’, but she could appreciate any culture or creed which dictated the need to carry a protective weapon at all times. It appealed to her nature.
“Do you think Parvati knows that he’s, well, into her?” asked Takh.
His captain’s voice became damn near sultry. “Now Takh, and here I thought you were all clueless. I’ve heard of the effort these humans went through to get Chao and Luca together. Would you like me to ask them to perform a similar effort for you and Corporal McCoy? Hmmm? It would make for quite the photo-op, as the humans would say.”
Takh felt a bit of panic, somehow. “No!” His panicked reply was low, hopefully not picked up by the surrounding cameras. “I mean, she’s so small. I could hurt her…assuming she wants to be romantic, of course.”
“Romantic? Takh, I admit I am still learning about human body language but trust me…if you want that, she wants that.” She pondered the humans in the room still going through some last-minute checks of their pressure suits. “Let’s put it this way. If you don’t make a move, then I just might ask Dhuz if it’s okay to add a human to our harem when we get back.”
“What?”
“I have learned quite the delightful human phrase. It is, as they say, Time To Nut Up Or Shut Up. I do find McCoy really cute, after all. As do you.”
Her XO grumbled semi-silently for a bit. “Fair enough, Captain. I’ll ask her. While we’re out there.”
“Good.” The humans in the clean room were now about finished with their checks, and Sadaf felt a bit of a thrill. She was, after all, witness to a species taking their first steps into a larger universe.
Five hoses were now shoved into five chest-mounted receptacles, each hose leading to its own hand-held air-conditioning unit. Another complicated round of checks, slaps, and thumbs-ups then followed.
“They do know that we’re just going to walk beside them right into the landing boat, right?” asked Takh. “This whole process isn’t really necessary.”
“Let them have this moment,” said Sadaf with a gentle smile. “They’re having fun.”
__________
The five white-suited individuals emerged from the hallway to pretty much universal uproar, both in person and online. The suit color was all NASA, but the logos were not. All four wore the emblem of the United Nations at their shoulder, a pair of olive branches surrounding a polar view of the world. The four humans all did their bit and waved for the cameras. Those in charge of the cameras did as instructed, and ignored the two black-and-sliver figures behind the quartet. The latter weren’t wearing any sort of pressure suit.
In the middle of the courtyard hovered the real talking piece, a landing boat from the Rithro. Its entry door was already lowered, and with another wave to the cameras from each of the five humans, they walked up the ramp and into the craft.
The five of them then looked at each other as the door began to close behind them. They’d trained together for a bit, enough to get a feel for each other. But now there was a real sense among them of holy shit what now?
Their mutual what-nows were interrupted as Tofa appeared. The arachnoid alien held a tray in one pedipalp, and upon that tray sat a little dish of what looked like Brazil nuts.
“Greetings!” chirped Tofa. “Welcome to Rithro Air, I assure you we have an excellent safety reputation. Well, almost excellent, if you don’t count the affair around Barnard’s Star. You may now take off your pressure suits. May I interest you in a nut?”
The four humans (and a few of the aliens) flinched as Ravindar let loose with a hearty belly-laugh. He reached up to undo his helmet while he beamed a brilliant white smile at their greeter. “You? I like you. We’re going to be fast friends.” He reached down to pluck a nut from the tray. “Madame? Do you want to take the first nut? Or should I taste it first?”
“Um…” For once, Parvati looked uncertain within her glass-and-cloth cocoon. “If you wish to taste, then please go ahead.”
“As you wish.” Ravindar held her eyes as he bit into the proffered nut. “It seems to be all right,” he pronounced.
After the great ceremony with which they’d been ensconced into their pressure suits, the humans then with reluctance emerged from their cocoons.
“We set up some chairs for everyone!” exclaimed Tofa, who gestured to the sides of the landing craft.
“Um, where do we put all of this?” asked Martinez as he held up a pressure-suit gauntlet.
The alien spider blinked. “Oh, right! Kexal, would you mind helping our guests stow their material?”
__________
The conference room at ULA now looked out over an even-greater bustle of activity. They were determined to at least match SpaceX in terms of tonnage-to-orbit; maybe they’d do so more efficiently? The mere notion had set a fire under everyone.
Joachim sat in a wheelchair while he studied those in front of him. “Ladies and gentlemen. I have, through some strange technological miracle, been re-granted the use of my mind. Not only that; they tell me that I and my wife might, if certain tests go well…we could become that which we once were. I intend to make sure that this gift does not go to waste. Not for me, nor for my wife, nor for the rest of humanity. Anyways. We have some aliens who need our help, we have some psychotic robot idiots who are fucking things up for everyone, and we need to get some serious tonnage into orbit as a result. Is that about the shape of things?”
“That’s pretty much the shape of it, sir,” said Dwight.
Joachim pointed a wrinkled finger at the speaker. “You. I’ve been caught up enough that I know you were the one to advocate for the use of Sea Dragon.”
“Just as a Hail Mary,” Dwight protested.
Clara cleared her throat. “I mean, I understand the enthusiasm but nobody has ever fired a pressure-fed engine that big. A single engine, mind you.”
Joachim rubbed his chin. “I understand your concern. But also keep in mind, this is a pintle injector, not a shower-head like they had on the F-1s on the Saturn-Five’s first stage. Pintle injectors were classified at the time. That’s a pity, because pintle injectors are safe as houses.”
Clara looked over at him. “Really?”
“Oh yeah, they’re pretty much bomb-proof.”
The team regarded the design now up on the screen. Clara was the first to speak their mutual thought. “Could…could we make this work?”
Joachim’s exclamation brought them all up short. “Of COURSE we can!” He thumped his cane into the floor for added emphasis. “Gentlemen…and ladies, please forgive me Clara…not one month ago I was a drooling wreck of a human. Today I come before you with my mind re-borne and in full function. I intend to make full use of that function. As does my wife, God bless her. We are going to set an example.”
Joachim stood, levering himself upright via his cane. “Here I stand,” he said. “Like Martin Luther before me, I can do no other.”
After a moment, everybody else in the conference room stood as well.
“Welp, we’re all standing,” said Dwight. “Okay, so what do we do now?”
Joachim pointed his cane at the screen. “Now, my dear Dwight, we Build. That. Fucking. Thing. We’re gonna show these Coalition assholes how we humans put some serious fucking tonnage into orbit.”
“Fuck yeah,” said Clara, as an unholy light came into her eyes.
“Fuck yes indeed,” replied Joachim. “The question now is, what do we put into it?”
The other people in the room looked at each other, just before bursting out into exclamations as to what they wanted put into that first launch. It was the sound of people on an expense account to beat the band.

2023.06.07 12:09 truckrepairservice How To Find Quick and Cheap Towing Services Near Me?
| Cheap Towing Service Near Me Nothing is more frustrating than having to halt your truck in the middle of the road because of an unexpected breakdown. Stuck in an unfamiliar place, with limited resources and nowhere to go, what would a driver do? Especially if the malfunction is so severe that quick action cannot help the truck to resume, finding towing services nearby becomes the need of the hour. An accident or a breakdown is a daunting experience in itself, and on top of that not being able to find the required towing services or truck repair shops makes it worse. For such situations, Breakdown Inc is a trucker's rescue, through which an isolated driver can find contacts of countless assistance providers near the location of the breakdown. These assistance providers or vendors offer truck repair services of various kinds. From providing quick services like altering a flat tire, oil change, etc., to carrying out heavy-duty towing and wrecking services, our vendors make sure that you dont feel helpless in this troubled situation of a breakdown. Towing heavy vehicles such as trucks, trailers, and tractors require expert technicians and specialized equipment. Affordability is another factor that plays a key role in deciding which service provider to choose from. A reliable and cheap towing service requires not only to be quick but also to be prepared for heavy-duty towing with all kinds of tools available. Breakdown Inc enlists only those truck repair shops and tow truck service providers that meet the checklist of quality work. All that needs to be done while facing a breakdown is to download our user-friendly app available for free on Android as well as IOS devices. The app comes with a very easy-to-operate interface, which makes it convenient for the user to find the nearest service providers and compare prices. We also have a highly responsive website that functions similarly to the app. But to become a smart buyer, it is important to first know the fundamentals of heavy-duty towing. All that you need to know about heavy-duty towing services. Heavy-duty towing can be useful for towing big vehicles like trucks, RVs, and commercial vehicles. Also, in case of an accident, light-duty towing may not be sufficient and so heavy-duty towing is the need of the hour. Let's take a look at a few frequently asked questions about cheap towing services. What type of vehicles needs heavy-duty towing? Semi-trucks and trailers, RVs, buses, and big commercial vehicles require heavy-duty towing. Accidental vehicles too require tow trucks and equipment to move. What techniques are used for towing? Towing companies generally use three techniques for providing quick and hassle-free towing. Some vehicles can easily be towed with a flatbed technique in which the vehicle is placed over a big flat surface and attached to a truck. Big trucks may not be easily towed with the flatbed technique and so the wheel-lift or hook-and-chain technique is used. What kind of equipment is used for towing? Pulleys and winches come in handy while pulling heavy automobiles onto the flatbed and towing vehicle as they are powerful enough to carry the load of bulky trucks. These tools are then secured with chains and straps. How to prepare your vehicle for heavy-duty towing? It is advised to place cones and flares around your vehicle while you wait for the towing services to arrive as it is important to save your vehicle from the ongoing traffic. In case the truck has already been parked in a safe spot at the side of the road, then it is safe to wait for the towing experts to reach you. Now, once the basics of towing are clear, it becomes a little easy for the user to choose the service provider. But before that, it is essential to look for a few factors that make a towing service reliable. It is important to keep a check on this list before finalizing your breakdown assistance provider. - Experience:
While choosing towing experts, always go for professionals who are already experienced in the business and hold credit for towing several heavy-duty vehicles. - Loading Capacity:
It is important to choose and find an towing service near me that is capable of carrying the heavy weight of trucks and trailers. A truck's weight can go up to as heavy as 80000 pounds and so the towing service provider needs to be equipped with all the necessary tools that can ease out the process of towing. - Long-Distance Towing Provision:
For a heavy truck to be towed to a far distance from the place of the breakdown, the towing service provider needs to have professional drivers and durable equipment that can sustain the weight of the truck and ensure quick and timely towing. - Safety:
The service providers need to be very careful with the handling of the vehicle which is to be towed to avoid any further damage to the truck. - Affordability:
The right towing service will never charge extra dollars for anything. Always be aware of the standard towing charges before selecting a vendor and go for the one which is not too heavy on your pocket. Even after knowing all about towing and wrecking services, when the time comes and you need these services, it is a tough task to find help nearby. Breakdown Inc is that online directory that makes it easier for an anxious driver to find the necessary help within the closest distance from the location of the breakdown or accident. We have immense options for choosing from when it comes to selecting an assistance provider for services like truck repairs, trailer, and reefer repairs, towing, and wrecker services. Being quality-oriented, our vendors ensure that only skilled and expert technicians are sent out for providing roadside assistance. 2023.06.07 12:05 shekhawati Finding the Best Multi-Super Specialty Hospital in Jaipur: A Comprehensive Guide
Introduction: When it comes to our health, we all want the best care possible. In a city like Jaipur, known for its rich cultural heritage and fast-growing medical infrastructure, finding the best multi-super specialty hospital can be a daunting task. With numerous options available, it's essential to know what factors to consider and how to make an informed decision. In this article, we will explore the key steps to finding the
best hospital in Jaipur that meets your specific healthcare needs.
Research and Gather Information: - Start by conducting thorough research on multi-super specialty hospitals in Jaipur. Look for hospitals that are renowned for their medical expertise, advanced technology, infrastructure, and patient satisfaction. Utilize online platforms, medical directories, and healthcare review websites to gather relevant information. Take note of the hospitals that consistently receive positive feedback and have a good reputation in the community.
Evaluate the Hospital's Specialties: - Consider your specific medical requirements and look for hospitals that offer a wide range of specialties. Assess the hospital's expertise in areas such as cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, neurology, gastroenterology, and other specialties relevant to your needs. A hospital with a comprehensive range of specialties ensures that you can receive integrated care under one roof, eliminating the need for multiple referrals and transfers.
Check Accreditation and Certifications: - Accreditation and certifications play a crucial role in determining the quality of healthcare services provided by a hospital. Look for hospitals that have obtained accreditation from recognized organizations such as the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) or the Joint Commission International (JCI). These accreditations indicate that the hospital has met stringent quality standards in patient care, safety, and infrastructure.
Assess the Infrastructure and Facilities: - Visit the hospital's website or contact them directly to gain insight into their infrastructure and facilities. Look for state-of-the-art equipment, advanced diagnostic capabilities, and modern treatment techniques. An ideal multi-super specialty hospital should have well-equipped operation theaters, intensive care units, radiology departments, and emergency services. Additionally, consider the availability of amenities like comfortable patient rooms, ample parking, and cafeteria facilities.
Consider the Expertise of Doctors and Medical Staff: - The proficiency and experience of doctors and medical staff can significantly impact your treatment outcome. Research the qualifications, credentials, and expertise of the specialists working at the hospital. Look for hospitals that have a team of highly skilled and renowned doctors who are recognized for their contributions to medical advancements. It's also beneficial to check if the hospital invests in ongoing medical education and training programs for their staff to ensure they stay up to date with the latest developments in healthcare.
Evaluate Patient Feedback and Reviews: - Reading patient feedback and reviews can provide valuable insights into the hospital's quality of care. Check online platforms, social media channels, and healthcare forums to gather feedback from previous patients. Pay attention to both positive and negative reviews, considering the overall trends and patterns. However, remember that individual experiences may vary, so it's essential to consider a range of opinions before making a judgment.
Assess Affordability and Insurance Coverage: - Consider your financial situation and evaluate the hospital's affordability in terms of treatment costs and insurance coverage. Look for hospitals that have tie-ups with reputed insurance providers to ensure a smooth reimbursement process. Additionally, check if the hospital offers various payment options and facilities for easy access to medical loans, if needed.
Conclusion: Finding the
best multi-super specialty hospital in Jaipur requires thorough research, evaluation of specialties, checking accreditations, assessing infrastructure, considering the expertise of doctors, and evaluating patient feedback.

2023.06.07 11:44 OkRice10 Road-trip to rural Taiwan
I have two days (this weekend) and a car - where should I go to see Taiwan outside of big cities?
I googled the usual places such the Sun Moon lake and the national parks, which look nice, but I’d rather drive around and see “Taiwan outside of big cities”, whatever that might be.
Any suggestions?

2023.06.07 11:29 Spyroki Will I get points on my license for this?
Yesterday I went shopping with my mum and the shop we went to has lay-by parking (not sure what the actual name is). I foolishly parked somewhere where there was a dropped kerb (I didn't realise at the time) and went away for about 40-50 minutes before returning.
As I returned a man walked up to me and told me that I was parked illegally (drop kerb leads to a carpark (in hindsight I really don't know how I didn't notice this) and that police have been informed. I apologized to the guy and told him I am really sorry, I was in a rush and just didn't think or look. And then he goes onto say because a little bit of my car was on the road, that also punishable by 3 points. AFAIK, I don't think my car was on the road, and if so, it would've only been like an inch of car on a fairly wide road, but obviously rules are rules and I understand it still is on the road.
I know I'm most likely going to get a PCN, but will I be getting 3 points on my license for this? I'm just worried because I've never had anything like this happen to me (have been driving for 3 years now) and I heard points have an effect on your insurance?
