I know my life isnt the worst thing possible. Im thankful for what I have I just cant help but feel like shit about it. So im gonna talk about it here.
Lets start at the beginning. I was born in L.A, from what I know my biological father (lets call him Brian) had an affair with another woman. So my mom got divorced and took us (at the time me 3, my bro 5, and my sis 7) to Nebraska. Far away from family, but most of them spoke only spanish anyways. Brian didnt pay child support until recently.
Struggles (idk): We were homeless for a bit less than a year, living at a shelter and a church. We got an apartment. My mother was a hard working single mom, and we moved 4 times in 6 years. Alot of school changes which was hard for me. The lack of a father figure, not even an uncle or grandfather or anyone, was also hard. The overall lack of family sucked balls. It was just us 4.
Stepdad: In 2015 my mom got married (after 10 years fatherless lol 💀). Turns out he never told her that he was a purple heart. Or was an ex-alchololic. Got shot in Iraq + some degenerative spine disorder + PTSD = a not so ideal, in pain, father. He also got my mom pregnant, a kid 10 years younger than me. Parents argue alot over small things which is really annoying. (also his family, my step family is all fragmented. i never had a big family bbq or thanksgiving before, and still havent had one now)
Lil Bro: This kid, fuck bro, he is honestly just a little brat but i still love him. He has ashma, partially deaf in one ear, is overweight, doesnt listen. He causes immense stress on everyone. Especially my short tempered veteran father.
Brother: older brother seemed rather normal until he was about 12. He was always a little nerdy but whatever. Thats when I noticed something was off about him. I think he is slightly autistic but you cant just ask your mom if your bro is a autistic. He has had only one friend come over and that was in like 2nd grade. He is 18 now, no job, no car, no friends, no gf. All he does is play Xbox and jerk off or whatever.
Sister: Around last year my sister (20) was ultra religious in a church we didnt go to anymore (some drama with my parents and the pastor). She got very attached to the pastors daugher and they are besties. Also jesus or whatever. She didnt like our house i guess, i dont blame her. So when she said she was moving, i was proud because she had grown up. Until she told us she was moving in with the pastors family. Yeah. The ones my parents dont like. So yeah that really hurt my mom and made my dad angry.
Back in like 2020/2021 life was looking great. Our new house in omaha was a bit small, but i was near all my friends, school, and a gym a 5 minute walk away. Until we moved to North Omaha. If you dont know all thats up here is old white folks, trailer trash, and poor black people. My parents wanted a ranch style house, without many neighbors. They found one and its an old ass house which had none of those qualities. "but its next to grandma and grandpa". Sadly grandma and grandpa are very old and seeminly tired of being grandparents because its been over a year and we havent visited once. Grandma has had cancer 3x and maybe has dementia so i dont blame her. I decided to go to the same school, now 15 miles/25 minutes away. I dont wanna change schools/North High is the worst school safety wise in the omaha metro. I have my liscense but no car yet. I cant wait to have to drive my autistic brother to his college when i save up for a car. And for my parents to make me drive myself to school, 25 minues away. for a small tank thats a fillup every 2/3 days. Nope. Take a girl on a date? Nope strict mom and father who is distant and uncomfortable to have a conversation with. Wanna hang out with friends? Find a ride. No one likes me enough to drive 30 minutues into north omaha lol.

I really want to talk about my problems in this paragraph, although it might seem a bit scattered. Firstly, let's talk about the positives in my life. Yes, I'm actually well known in my town, Alhamdulillah. I discovered my passion for photography in 2021, so I asked my dad for a camera, and indeed, I got what I wanted. I started taking pictures of everyday things in my life and began uploading them on social media platforms. I was really happy when I saw people reacting to my posts, even though I knew that one of my siblings, who was using my mom's phone, was the one reacting. I really started gaining popularity towards the end of 2022 when I began photographing people in my town. Day after day, my Instagram gained more and more followers, and people started recognizing me in my school as "Josef the photographer". Some people already knew me before, to be honest. I used to build robots, so I was known as 'Harry Potter the tech nerd", but as of now, I'm Josef the photographer. That was the positive side of the story. Now let's talk about the other side.
I can categorize my problems into many categories, but let's focus on the latest one caused by my new passion. As I mentioned, people know me as the new photographer, so every time I took out my camera to shoot street pictures, people would stop me and ask for free pictures. At first, I was completely okay with that, but as time went on, it started to annoy me. I realized I needed to put an end to this. I know you might not take this issue seriously, but it's a problem for me, especially because I still don't know how to say the simple word 'NO.' It's actually the key to solving many problems, but I can't bring myself to do it. I'm very weak in this aspect, and I get nervous when showing my pictures to new people I don't know, fearing that I might disappoint them. I truly need to practice more so that one day I can confidently say the word 'NO.' It's a work in progress.
Oh, one more thing, I often photograph for free. Sport teams contact me to come and cover their matches, and I do take pictures. However, what puts me under high pressure is the fact that people want the photos as fast as possible. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I prefer to edit my pictures calmly and enjoy the process. Besides, I also have to study for school and manage other responsibilities. Sometimes I'm simply not in the mood, but they don't understand that, and it frustrates me even more. I could talk for days about this specific problem. It may seem like a minor issue with a simple solution for some people, but for me, it's not that easy.
Moving on to other insecurities I have about myself, it's my body. Yes, I know I should be happy with what I have, Alhamdulillah, but I still wish I could make some changes. I'm a short guy, around 1.67 meters tall, which is considered short compared to other teens in my age. This has caused some problems for me, as I was always the shortest guy in my class, and I was often bullied because of it. However, it's no longer a significant issue, and I can live with it. As for my face, I wouldn't say I'm ugly, but lately, I've been dealing with acne that has been growing rapidly over the past year. People keep mentioning it every time they see me, and it's really annoying, especially when someone says, 'Oh, it seems like you masturbate too much.' I know it doesn't make sense, but that's what they say! Anyway, I'm trying hard to overcome and get rid of my acne, and Alhamdulillah, I'm living with it for now.
I wrote this little paragraph to help alleviate my overthinking and negative vibes. It's now midnight, and I'll probably go do my skincare routine, even though it doesn't seem to help much. But I hope tomorrow will be a good day.

Professor of Theology, David Penchansky, says that the ancient sages who wrote these texts "believed in a balanced universe in which the good are rewarded for their goodness and the evil are punished. These two sources were in tension at times; human experience showed that sometimes good people suffer and evil people sleep peacefully. She was like, “Whoever said that won’t be participating in field day” and whatever and went up to these group of girls with “attitude problems” and interrogated them for a good 5 minutes. 2023.06.08 01:20 BrightEmber Trans woman living with family in Alabama. Need advice for an uncertain future.
So, context... I'm an autistic trans woman, who will be 21 in 18 days. I live in a rural town in central Alabama. I'm very much a legal adult, and despite this, I am only just now beginning to have some sense of agency and independence- no one's fault, but simply life to blame. To elaborate, and answer the question of "why not simply leave", there's much information to divulge. I thought about telling the whole story of discovering my gender identity, but that would make this already massive post even longer, and I'm so used to justifying it due to my own internal doubts hammered in by the people in my life, that perhaps I shouldn't constantly feel the need to explain why my feelings are valid to everyone. But anyway. Here's the gist of my situation.
I became homeschooled starting in 7th grade- because Alabama schools are absolutely bottom of the barrel, and I simply refused to go, due to the disparity in how different it was from what I was used to, the people in particular being difficult to handle, having moved from Georgia. I pretty much coasted along since then- not wise, but options were ever limited. I essentially had no social interaction outside of family for those 6 years or so, besides online interactions.
Back in 2021, is when things started getting bad. I was finally about to start learning to drive, studied up and preparing for that- at the time still very much in the closet as much internally as externally. But at the start of the year, my health took a turn for the worse. I was perpetually bedridden for weeks, and living with extreme pain, out of nowhere. I finally went to the hospital, and was diagnosed with a rather extreme case and nasty flare up of Ulcerative colitis. Those were the most painful days of my life. If that was not going to get better, I would rather have not continued. Thankfully, the suffering subsided, as I slowly got on medication that gradually improved my condition. It's still hell to live with, and has permanently impacted how I live my life, but thankfully I can for the most part live like a normal person, barring the unpredictability of my chronic illness loving to flare up and suddenly deciding I should suffer from time to time.
Halfway through that year, when I was finally becoming more stable and healthy again, my mother, who had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's for a while at that point, suddenly changed. It was like a switch was flipped that day, and the illness went from something we barely noticed, to her never being the same again. It was really bad for a while. Dementia is not at all how it's portrayed in media... She had constant delusions, absolutely no emotional control, essentially dementia-induced psychosis, and for a while we thought we would have to send her to a home for her and our safety. Thankfully, her condition improved over time as well. She was never the same. Her frequent delusions are now rare, but she has the mental maturity of a child. I'm beyond grateful, that she knows who all of us are, and the most important parts remain- how she feels about us all. But since then, my father had to retire from work early to help take care of things, and being the oldest, with two younger siblings, and my mother who is more of a child than them, there's a lot of responsibility placed on me, and frankly, I should be doing even more than I am already. Especially due to this next point.
After a long time of getting things stable again, this past month, my father discovered a lump on his tongue. It turned out to be stage 2 cancer. All removed now, but he's currently receiving radiation treatment- we were very lucky to catch it this early on, and the doctors claim he likely won't need any further treatment afterwards. But of course, this means more turmoil in an already turbulent living situation. We already barely had the money to scrape by, now with potential medical bills and other expenses added on, me being here is more important than ever. I get my medical needs met by living here, my disability money is one of our sources of income, and even without that, I would never leave during all this. Not when there's no way of knowing how much time I have left with either of them.
Of course, all that said, I'm trans. And remaining with my family, of whom the only supportive ones, are my younger sister, and my two older half-sisters who live with their own families, means that I'm stuck in a place where I can not be the person I want to be, and am essentially living a double life. My sleeping schedule is quite awful, but staying up late into the night and early morning is the only time I can be who I want to be, and no longer put on a mask. My social life pretty much consists of VRchat exclusively. Before discovering that platform last October, I just... didn't talk to people. And now that I know, what it's like, to truly live as myself, to be perceived, both by myself and others, as who I am- taking steps towards that is not something I am willing to wait a completely unknown amount of time for, most likely several years at the very least... especially when I've heard the earlier you start treatment, the better.
I finally received my learner's permit after life repeatedly getting in the way. Rushed to obtain it before my father started his radiation treatments, given my ability to take people places is more important than ever now. He may start teaching me before his treatments complete, maybe after. I'm unsure. Either way, I am finally about to have some semblance of freedom, for the first time.
What I'm curious about, is what I can do with that. If I can begin gender-affirming treatment, that would be incredible, and terrifying. I wouldn't be able to say no. Of course, I'd keep it secret, and only talk about it when it becomes the ever obvious elephant in the room. Until then, there's already so much to deal with that I absolutely do not want to be at odds with my family during this already difficult time. There's absolutely no benefit to them knowing. Only more potential problems.
And of course, that's assuming that's even possible for me, in Alabama. I'm well aware this is certainly not the best state for me to be in. Regardless...
I just want to know. What steps CAN I take, in order to proceed with possible gender-affirming medical treatment- or just anything, resources, advice, etc that would help in this situation, for that matter.

Today one of my 9th grade girls came up while they were working on their final projects (yes, we are still in school and have another week to go!) and asked if I had a ziplock she could have. I didn't, she went to her seat, and I assumed was working on her project with her partner.
Later when I walked by them on a circuit of the room, I noticed they weren't working on their project but looking at a YouTube video. It turns out they were watching a video on how to make origami paper bags out of a piece of copier paper. They each made a cute little bag and drew pictures of ice cream cones and popsicles on the front.
I asked them why and they said they had cleaned out their backpacks and found all the loose change and made the baggies to hold it so they could get popsicles from the ice cream truck on the way home.
I teach in a semi rough neighborhood and these two girls with their little decorated bags for popsicle money just made my day.
It's moments like this that brought me back to the classroom from an office job.

2023.06.08 01:14 Worthy-Green-6457 I graduated from my school, but it was mostly a scam, we missed almost half of the curriculum. How is best to go about trying to get a refund?
I graduated from a 900 hour massage therapy school. Almost half of what was on the curriculum was never covered. Mostly due to the instructor for the second half of the program was a bit mentally unstable and she just never taught us anything. We had no book work, exams, hands on work, projects, nothing. We occosaonlly covered a little here and there but almost the entire second half of it she just never taught to us. I did finish the program. I met with the school director and one of the partial owners of the school because I requested a 50% refund on my tuition. I explained all of it to them. I did receive grades in those modules that were missed, but those aren't real grades, because like I said, we never had any exams, projects, etc to be graded on. They were sympathetic and apologetic, and said I could sit in on classes to try to catch up what I missed. I said I wouldn't be able to do that because I won't be living in this area much longer, and also you can't piece together almost half a curriculum. Sit ins are for if you miss a day or two, not half of the entire program. They said they wouldnt refund the half of my tuition I requested, just offered the sit in option. I feel this school screwed me over completely. I don't think they meant to, it was really just the fact that the second teacher I had never did her job, so I really missed out on half my education. What should I do next? File a complaint with the department of education? The school was expensive and I don't think its at all fair that I should pay for something that I didnt receive half of. I wasn't even requesting a full refund, I was being completely fair in my request of half, since that is exactly what was missed. Theirs also other students currently in the program who have talked to the school director and told him the exact same thing. One of the new students even quit the program because of how badly run it is and the lack of education.

How did your school decide your predicted grades/how strict were they about them?
I've seen people saying they're just what they got in Y12 mocks, which seems really unfair given how much you can improve.
In my 6th form they are not strict at all and basically give you whatever you want if you ask. (Like even if you got a C in Mocks you could get predicted A* if you're applying to a course that would need it). It seems stupid but tbh predicted grades are sort of a weird idea since people often can improve a lot.

THEY ARE TELLING 15 YEAR OLDS TO USE CARBON FUCKING TETRACHLORIDE. reminder that the book is printed in 2022, not some 60s freakiness.
