2023.06.06 18:24 WinterSoldierFetish Reapplying for University

I have just finished my first year of uni. I really didn't like the course. It was a last minute decision as to what subject I would study, and not I really think I chose the wrong one.
I want to apply to a different course, at a different uni. It is obviously a totally different area, but something that I would massively prefer. I got the grades for it in my A Levels, but I have no idea how to make the switch, or even if I can, in a way.
Evidently, if I were to apply through UCAS I have totally missed the deadline this year - is this the only way to apply? The date was in January, and obviously everyone is sitting their actual A Levels now. Would I have to take a gap year of some sort, and apply? But if I do that, is there someone that can guide me through the process - like there was in sixth form? I don't even know how to slightly begin doing it, but I know that I do not want a degree in the field I am currently in.
Any help would be appreciated - I am very happy to answer any questions/clarify things in the comments if necessary. :)

2023.06.06 18:23 jennaisokay We will be going dark from June 12-14. We're a tiny but mighty news community, + (we'd like to think) important to communicating local news and arts coverage wherever our readers are. We may be small communities, but we believe in supporting 3rd party developers. See info below for more.

What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do?
  1. Complain. Message the mods of, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
  3. Boycott and spread the Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

2023.06.06 18:22 ihaveamassiveash feel like im not being seen the way i want to :(

honestly maybe im just being dramatic or reading too far into things, im just really not good at interpreting social situations and i dont do good in social situations.
sorry if i sound deranged in this post its hot asf and im tired and sleepy so im just ranting.
i like posting whatever i want on my social media. only ppl from my school follow it as its private.
i honestly think i have more of a cutesy/shy vibe, but i like taking hot pictres of myself in my own free time since i dont have this level of confidence irl. and these girls - this one girl in particular - keeps responding to them saying "mommy😍" or "step on me😍". i honestly dont really like her and i dont think shes sapphic cus shes constantly chasing after guys. i mean she might be, i dont really know.
i dont know why but being seen in that dominant position just makes me feel sooo uncomfortable. ive honestly contemplated just blocking her but i dont wanna be rude. but its just so uncomfortable being seen like that.
now everytime i post a picture where im not smiling or post a pic in like black clothes thats what i get, and its not just her im worried this will get get everyone to view me as some hot dominant thick mommy.
i cant explain it but something about it makes me very uncomfortable. i cant explain what.
my usual style is usually a dress or skirt. my whole room is pink, i have loads of pink teddies and pink things all over it, and my room is in my stories a lot. one time she texted me saying she loves girls with hot gothic rooms and sent me a pinterest picture of this girl wearing this black corset and black lingerie posing with a sword. i just said haha and she said a style/room like that would suit me better. i said i dont like black and she said whaaaa but ur thick hot mommy😍
whats crazy is that ppl have always thought i was cringe or pathetic plus im neurodivergent and this is the style that makes me comfortable. just the past year for a short period i tried to be "hot, cool, likes metal music" cus i thought ppl would like me better. and not even in real life, that was JUST for insta pictures lol. just as an aesthetic change. it worked, they did like me better. but then i reverted back cus the past yr ended up being the worst year of my life for a lot of other reasons and i realized how much i had changed and the amount of shit i did just for an ounce of validation and affection and attention.
so i guess in a way i did this to myself. i just dont know why its making me so uncomfortable to be seen that way. like honestly i cant see myself in that position of dominance/power at all and no one i know could. idk this girl (shes friends with my friend but ive never talked to her irl) and i know shes just trying to compliment me. but idk why but being seen like that is so weird to me.
but like i also dont wanna be just one thing. like i wanna be myself outside then come home and wear sexy clothes and take pictures. i wanna be able to do that without u calling me mommy n telling me to step on sure thats complimenting to people who are into that but to me its just super weird.
i dont know what it is but something about it just makes me feel weird. like any other compliment is fine but mommy is weird honestly sometimes even "hot/sexy" is weird to me but it depends on the context.
and yeah maybe i sound kinda deranged. yes i know its a compliment and maybe its a weird thing to fixate on. but it really makes me uncomfy. i wouldnt mind it if she complimented my normal pics saying u look cute or whatever. but its always the ones i took at 3am cus i was bored and wanted to look sexy with "mommyyy".
yeah i have a few theories on why this bothers me so muc but maybe im just looking too far into it. idk. or maybe im just bothered in general and im just fixating on this. i wouldnt say it SUPER bothers me but it just makes me uncomfy and im just kinda pissed off ab it now cus im tired and sleepy.

2023.06.06 18:22 Waelder TCF PATCH 3.4.0 - 07th June 2023

TCF PATCH 3.4.0 - 07th June 2023
Read the patchnotes in the game's website:
The game will go into maintenance tomorrow 7th June 2023 at 08:00am CEST and the game will be inaccessible for a few hours.
Hello Prospectors!
Patch 3.4.0 has been cooking behind the scenes for a little while now, and it's finally ready to be served. Complete with seasonings, a tall drink, and a few changes that might catch your interest, we're following up on some changes from 3.2 and 3.3 while also addressing some issues that have been highlighted by our community. On the menu today will be additional AI changes, a balance pass on some of our early game weapons, the usual stomping of a few pesky bugs and exploits, an adjustment to Tharis storm cycles, and yes, an adjustment to Progenitor Slags. We recently discussed in our Discord Server that we're taking some time to focus on repaying technical debts and relooking into systems to have more flexibility with our code in order to make things more smooth, however a lot of these things are not necessarily "player-facing" so we will use these notes to focus on changes that you will see and experience directly within the game. As always, be sure to let us know what you think of the new changes after you've downloaded the new update, and we will continue to monitor and address them as soon as we can. Onto the notes!

Weapon Balance, my old friend, it's nice to see you again! As a fun fact from our data, the three weapons that are the most requested to receive a balance pass are the Manticore, AR-55, and C-32 Bolt Action. This is something that we are always investigating and keeping tabs on behind the scenes, but after our feedback from the 3.2 patch, it seemed there were a few weapons that needed a bit more than just a damage value changed, so we've made a few more changes to lightly poke the meta to encourage a nice mix of weapons and keep things feeling fresh with your encounters. The vision that is planted in our brains here is to make sure our early game weapons feel like early game weapons without nerfing them into the ground or making them unusable in engagements with higher-geared players. However, with a TTK this short, sometimes that perfect balance can be hard to find. Having said that, minor changes are the plan for this one, let us know what you think!
Manticore (MK1 & MK2):
  • Magazine size: 24 -> 22
  • Headshot multiplier: 1.5 -> 1.4
AR-55(Rusty, MK1 & MK2):
  • Projectile speed: 36400 -> 34200
PDW (Rusty, MK1 & MK2):
  • Increased hip shot spread by 15%
  • Damage falloff multiplier: 0.7 -> 0.6
C32(MK1 & MK2):
  • Damage falloff multiplier: 1.0 -> 0.7

Matchmaking Changes

We've heard your feedback that something just doesn't feel quite right, and we've noticed it in our matches as well. In order to address it, we've done some deep dive investigating to answer a few questions: Is matchmaking working as intended? Is "beginner matchmaking" working properly? Now this covers a really wide range of variables and not every player's reported issue can lead to the same outlier in the way our game matchmakes, but we've made some major changes to the way our matchmaking registers and removes players on a server, to prevent server over population, which we believe should fix squad separation issues as well. We intend to continue keeping a close eye on this topic, so please don't hesitate to reach out and let us know if you experience or notice any differences!

Anti-Cheat Improvements

Fighting cheating is our number one priority, and we are aware that for some of our players the current state of the game is not ideal. As with every patch, 3.4.0 will contain various backend improvements and tweaks to our anti-cheat formula. In addition, we have added new systems to the game to help detect and prevent the kinds of cheats we have found to be the most common. While we would love to go into detail about exactly what is being changed, any info we give on our methods is unfortunately information that can be used to circumvent those methods. Regardless, we do expect that these changes should have a noticeable effect on the state of the game, and we will be monitoring them closely after they go live and adjusting them as necessary.
If you would like to contribute to the games anti-cheat efforts, reports are always one of the most useful resources at our teams disposal. Simply sending a report in-game can go a long way, and you can also make use of our #reports-and-appeals channel in our official Discord server if you would like to give some more detailed information to our anti-cheat team or would like to include a video clip with your report.
We hope these changes go a long way towards improving your experience on Fortuna, until next time Prospectors!

  • Insurance payout timer has been increased from 45 minutes to 6 hours in order to combat a known item duplication exploit
    • This one is a significant change for us, and we discussed methods to address item duplication in a way that was quick and impactful. This change will ensure the game instance has shut down and all players have left the instance before dishing out insurance reimbursements.
    • Additionally and for clarity, players participating in this exploit will receive a ban if they are found to be duplicating items. Don't give into the temptation!
  • We've adjusted tuning of creature proximity senses as a follow up from patch 3.3.0
  • We've adjusted Crusher and Marauder aggro so that disengaging with the fiercest of terrestrial creatures isn't as difficult. No more Jeffs launching interplanetary acid bombs across the map as you run away clutching your last stim
  • Storm cycles on Tharis Island have been shortened by lowering the time between storms from 25 minutes to 21 minutes to make forging feel less tedious. Duration of the storm remains unaffected
  • Slightly increased the probability of receiving Progenitor Slag as a byproduct of forging from 10% to 13%
  • Decreased the required amount of slags for final safe pocket upgrade from 3 to 2
  • Windfall's Shop received some swanky new images to showcase item bundles

  • Weapon, melee, and consumable textures should no longer disappear after using a throwable consumable. For real though this time
  • Fixed an out of bounds exploit above Green's Prospect Garage
  • Fixed an out of bounds exploit near Osiris Research Center
  • Fixed an out of bounds exploit near the lab at Rock Pools
  • Fixed an out of bounds exploit at Pinnacle Labs
  • Fixed an out of bounds exploit near Favela
  • Fixed an out of bounds exploit near Skeleton Observation Site
  • Fixed an unintended area near Waterfall Labs
  • Fixed an unintended area near Korolev HQ
  • Fixed an unintended area near Rock Pools
  • Fixed a "stuck spot" at Root Rock Tunnel
  • Fixed a "stuck spot" at Fallen Tree
  • Fixed a "stuck spot" at a specific building near Hay Fields
  • The Howler took a few more aviation lessons and should no longer get stuck on environmental objects
  • Fixed several hiding spots that could be abused by using certain emotes in bodies of water.
  • Fixed an area where players could clip through and hide on the Laser Drill
  • Fixed an exploit that allowed players to climb to the top of the dungeon on Crescent Falls
  • Adjusted a spawn point on Tharis Island that was a bit too close to AI creatures
  • Fixed a damage mitigation bug that could occur with the Jungle Bandit archetype
  • Fixed a rendering/collision issue with a vehicle in Pumpkin Fields
  • Fixed an issue that allowed players to move while emoting
  • Fixed an issue with some keybinds not being present when using an AZERTY keyboard. Don't get caught inspecting your weapons too often now!
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the game to crash in the event a Player Report came back with an error
  • Fixed a exploit regarding Free Loadout Runs and claimed insurances
  • Fixed a collision issue with a tree root near Pumpkin Fields and Starport Landing Pad. We're prospectors, not termites
  • Fixed an issue with a weapon's weight being affected by the ammo weight reduction perk.
  • Fixed an issue with the explosive damage perk reducing damage from storm strikes and fauna damage
  • Fixed a visual issue with the "Top Tiktok Howler Creators" decal on the station
  • Fixed an issue where a player would be redeployed to the same map if foamed while disconnected instead of being sent back to the station
  • Addressed missing localization for the "Email" textbox in the Newsletter (DE, ES, FR, IT, JP, KR. PL. PT, RU, CN)
  • Fixed an issue with faulty SFX when attacking Blast Ticks with a melee weapon
  • Fixed an issue with the Fortuna Pass displaying incorrect rewards when skipping levels using Aurum
  • Relocated a mysterious floating rail at Favela to its proper location
  • Fixed an issue with broken armor UI still showing the broken icon after being repaired
  • Fixed an issue causing Error Code ## with some players when dropping
  • Fixed an issue with squad separation not functioning as intended. You should only see parties of the same size deploying to the planet in Trusted Matchmaking

Known Issues & Things We Are Working On™

While some of these issues might take a bit longer, we are still investigating and aim to find fixes and address these as soon as we can.
  • We are aware of your feedback that you want to see a default weapon skin setting.
  • We are investigating changes to the process of selling items smoother.
  • Deysnc Issues - we are cautiously keeping an eye on this topic and working with players where possible to investigate these instances.
  • Getting kicked back to the lobby is currently under investigation.
  • We received a bunch of reports that performance has taken a hit in Season 3 and are investigating.
  • Our Welcome Packs descriptions need to be reworded to reflect the disappearance of mandatory wipes.
  • Streaming tools can lead to crashes for some players.
Additionally for those of you who read our little messages at the bottom, Patch 3.5.0 is scheduled for June 28th, so no need to wonder which Wednesday it'll be! Also, you look stellar today!

2023.06.06 18:20 MediocreMasterWizard Is it appropriate or can it be helpful to contact an interviewer about preparation?

Hey all,
So I'm Interviewing for a position as a software engineer very soon here and while I've done interviews before I really liked this specific company and the interviewer on a personal level during a first round interview. However as programming goes it as a position uses a few programming languages as I just haven't used in a while though as most in this profession would know skills are often very transferrable and that shouldn't usually be an issue.
So there is the context here is the question, I've been reading the job posting, quizzing myself on all relevant info regarding programming languages and duties in it ad nauseum but I really want to nail this. Is there some appropriate or even endearing way that I can ask the interviewer for what specifically I should be brushing up on? I'd like to really signal interest and dedication, but I'm worried it could come off as trying to get a peak at the test or something similar.
Thanks in advance for any advice, I'm just a nervous recent college grad looking for some professional advice.

2023.06.06 18:19 Sagido What was your way to level to 50?

Is there a specific type of content people prefer to grind levels?
Are there some efficient ways for fast xp?
Just grinding mobs seem to suck for xp. Density is low and packs are too spaced out. I found myself skipping mobs that are not part of objectives.
What did you guys do on your first playthrough?

2023.06.06 18:17 iboughtarock TIFU by hiding my brain freeze fetish and ruining my first serious relationship

Obligatory "this didn't happen today" but rather a while ago, during the early stages of my first serious relationship. Let me preface this by saying that I have a peculiar sexual quirk that involves brain freezes. Yeah, you read that right. Trust me, it's as weird as it sounds.
So, to give you a bit of context, this story starts way back when I was a curious and naïve youngster. My friends and I would often have competitions to see who could consume the coldest beverages the fastest. Well, one fateful day, during a particularly intense chugging session, I experienced a massive brain freeze. But here's the kicker - rather than being an excruciating moment, it somehow felt... pleasurable.
Fast forward to the present day, and I'm finally in my first serious relationship with an amazing person. We've been together for a while, and things have been going great. We've shared our hopes, dreams, and secrets with each other, but there was one secret that I just couldn't bring myself to confess. Yeah you guessed it - my brain freeze fetish.
The topic of sex started to come up naturally as our relationship grew more intimate, but every time it did, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and anxiety. How would I explain this to her without sounding utterly bizarre?
In an attempt to fulfill my fetish without letting my girlfriend know, I came up with a misguided plan. I bought a small container like those found in hotel rooms, specifically designed to hold ice cubes. I hid it in a desk drawer next to my bed, and when the time came for intimate moments, I would discreetly consume the ice cubes, hoping to induce a brain freeze sensation without her knowledge.
One evening, as we were engaging in some passionate foreplay, I decided to deploy the ice cube trick. I slipped my hand into the drawer, grabbed an ice cube, and started to subtly munch on it while pleasuring her orally. It was a risky move, but I was convinced it would heighten the experience for both of us.
However, in my nervousness and haste, I accidentally bit down too hard, causing a big chunk to shoot from my mouth. To my horror, it landed on my girlfriend's sensitive skin, and the sudden sensation of coldness shocked and startled her.
"What the hell was that?" she exclaimed, leaping away from me. Confusion and panic flashed across her face as she realized what had just happened. The mood was shattered, and an awkward silence enveloped the room until she left.
I was left there, overwhelmed with regret and embarrassment, realizing that my misguided attempt to indulge in my fetish had not only failed but also resulted in the end of my first serious relationship.
TL;DR: TIFU by secretly incorporating my brain freeze fetish into intimate moments, accidentally startling my girlfriend and causing the end of our relationship.

2023.06.06 18:16 TheUlsterITGuy Advice/Vent on a controlling colleague

This is a fair bit of a vent, so if you don't want to read fair enough, probably won't be able to respond to comments till tomorrow but appreciate folk that do comment.
Advice on dealing with a controlling colleague?
I have been working in my company for just over a year now, it is a tiny company, with under 20 employees, it is a tight nit group of folk and our IT team consists of just 3 people;myself, the manager, (we will call him Ryan) and the colleague in question. We will call the colleague Michael
I would preface this with the fact I have no personal beef with Michael, it is strictly professional here. We get on quite well on a personal level.
I graduated with my bachelors degree in Cybersecurity last year with a decent grade, I want to specialise in cyber but do have a broader knowledge that can be applied for a company like this. and that has been what has happened, instead of doing a lot of cyber stuff, its more generic stuff, like setting up file servers, mail servers etc.
For context, when I joined one year ago, it was a 1 man show, the previous guy (who the colleague in question replaced) done thing his way, without telling people what he had done, and often days would be spent twidling my thumbs cause ive nothing to do, when asking my manager he would tell me to ask the previous colleague, who we will call Josh.
Josh resigned in pretty rough circumstances, walking out the door without serving his notice period. Michael was hired to replace him.
Josh essentially built an IT infrastructure on his own over 15 or so years, and left with 0 knowledge transfer, and for a period of about 3-4 months, it was pretty busy for me and Michael, having to consistently work together to figure out the things that Josh had built.
However, particularly in the last few months, Michael is starting to show these kind of tendancies, doing things his way, and doing almost everything., certainly all the major projects. I am still a graduate in my eyes and I need to be getting valuable experience which I am not getting. Sure he is my superior for all intents and purposes, but I can barely change a server password without his approval. He is making changes that go uninformed for weeks and it is driving me nuts. This is the tip of the iceberg and its not so easy to convey to people who are outside of the situation but basically it is a one man show, and there is no signs of that changing. This has given me a sense of imposter syndrome, as I have spent so long doing very little in my first year, that I feel like when I have another potential job offer I will just turn it down because of this entire situation.
I like the company, sure it has its faults like any company, but I have been quite lucky to work in a company where I am friends on a personal level with 2 of the employees who are literally in the next room, we can share lunch breaks etc. But this has sent me to the point of I want to leave and I won't even bother chatting to Ryan cause I have become set in the fact I want to leave, I don't know if I should raise this in some description with Ryan, but despite wanting to leave, I think it may be for the best as the next employee that takes my place is going to have to deal with the same things.
Thanks for listening to my ted talk

2023.06.06 18:15 FyrestarOmega Throwback - Ben Myers' Defense Opening Statement

Thought a refresher of the opening statement presented by Myers related the case he intends to present might be helpful, since membership has grown from about two dozen people on that day until now. Using Sky News because older live Chester Standard articles are not loading correctly, but the Chester Standard link is at the bottom.
This Sky News link would also take you to the prosecution opening statements if you continue to go backwards

Defence begins by saying 'all we have so far is a theory of guilt based firmly on coincidence'

Ben Myers KC has begun his opening statement, speaking in defence of Lucy Letby.
He begins by acknowledging to the jury how saddening the allegations are.
"It is difficult to think of allegations that could be more upsetting than these and it's difficult to think of allegations that strike harder at our desire to protect than these allegations," he says.
He says "the sympathy of everyone will rightly be with the families of the children involved in this case" and the defence is not here to "diminish" that.
He tells the jury it would be "easy for emotion to take the place of evidence" but says that would be "staggeringly unfair" to the defendant.
"There is a real danger that people will simply accept the prosecution theory of guilt," he tells the court.
"And that is all that we have so far. A theory of guilt, based firmly on coincidence."
Mr Myers tells the court blame should not be "heaped on that woman", while pointing at Letby, and says others may have made mistakes.
"Sometimes what happened was a genuine deterioration in the health of one or other of these children," he says.

'You won't get the answers simply looking at the woman in the dock'

Ben Myers tells the jury he is "barely touching" on the detail involved in this case today.
He says the defence's opening statement will not be as detailed as the four-day opening the prosecution has put forward. More detail will come later in the trial.
He says he will touch on "failings at the Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal unit that have nothing to do with Lucy Letby".
Letby was a "dedicated nurse", Mr Myers says, who "trained hard" to look after the babies at the unit and "in no way did she want to hurt them".
Letby "loved her job... cared deeply about the babies she looked after, and cared deeply for their families", the court is told.
"You won't get the answers to this case simply by looking at the woman in the dock now," he says.
"This is where she is six years after starting to face allegations like this. As you can imagine, that must be utterly gruelling for anyone."
Mr Myers says the jury "might want to keep the effect of that in mind" when they examine evidence in the case.
"Anybody who is approaching this as if it is any kind of done deal has got it very badly wrong," the court is told.
In the dock, Letby continues staring straight ahead.

Letby wrote 'I'll never have children or marry' in 'confession' note

The court is once again shown what - the prosecution says - was Letby's confession note.
But Mr Myers says these are the writings of an "anguished woman in despair" who is realising the enormity of what is facing her.
A line on the note, which is being shown to the court, says Letby has an "overwhelming fear... I'll never have children or marry... I will never know what it's like to have a family... despair."
He says the note does not "accurately reflect" what has happened, but was written by Letby while upset, who "poured her feelings onto paper as a way of coping".

'No evidence' these attacks took place, defence says

Defence KC Ben Myers is now addressing why a number of medical notes were found in Lucy Letby's possession following a search of her house.
He says she did not have them for a "sinister motive" but she was a person who "scribbled things down" and a person who "hangs onto bits of paper".
He then turns to the "coincidence" involved in the case.
"We say there is an assumption that someone is doing deliberate harm," he tells the court.
"There is no evidence of the actual events being alleged."
From using syringes to injecting air, tampering with bags of fluid or in some other way poisoning, physically assaulting children, or smothering them - the defence says there is no evidence that these attacks took place.
He returns to the case of Child E, whose mother - the prosecution said - walked in on Letby attacking her child.
Mr Myers says the evidence will not bear this out.
"The assumption of harm" and the assumption Letby is behind the harm has made the allegations "self-fulfilling".

Defence questions standard of care at Countess of Chester Hospital

Defence KC Ben Myers is now telling the jury there were shortcomings at the Countess of Chester Hospital that cannot be attributed to Letby.
"There is a question of whether this hospital should have been looking after all these children, and whether it did so to the required standard," My Myers tells the court.
"For a nurse in the neonatal unit, standing there when a child is unwell is unremarkable," he says.
"Her presence alone is now treated as sinister."

What the defence is asking the jury to consider

The defence KC tells the jury the evidence "may look daunting" to start with, but he says he will be asking them to consider five issues.
These are...
1. The birth condition of the baby.
2. Whether there were any problems in the health and care of the child leading up to the event we are considering. He says: "Things with babies like this can be unexpected... but we also say when you get down to the detail of the evidence it isn't always that clear and it isn't always unexpected."
3. Whether the prosecution expert medical evidence proves there was deliberate harm done.
4. Whether Letby was present at the time and what the evidence can establish about what she was doing if she was there.
5. If there were failings in care with the baby we are looking at, or at the unit as a whole.

'We are dealing with babies who are clinically fragile'

The defence says there were other events and "collapses" which took place when Lucy Letby was not present.
The court has been shown again a chart - first presented by the prosecution - which shows Lucy Letby was present at all 22 incidents involving the 17 babies mentioned in the indictment.
Defence KC Ben Myers says the chart does not show the "shortcomings in care, which may be the fault of others", nor does it show any other incidents which took place when Letby was not there.
"When we strip away all the surrounding detail, messages, Facebook searches, even amateur psychology, the case will come down to the medical evidence," he tells the jury.
The cause of death or deterioration in an infant is "not always clear" and there can be a "number of possibilities", Mr Myers says.
"Generally, we are dealing with babies who are clinically fragile, and their condition can change very swiftly."

Experts 'influenced by confirmation bias', says defence

Ben Myers KC is now returning to the five points that he is asking the jury to consider (see 12.59pm post) when deciding if Letby is guilty or not.
He asks the jury to "remember how quickly problems can develop" with neonatal children.
He tells the jury to listen out for any evidence that shows the unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital was "understaffed and overstretched".
He says experts can be influenced by "an overarching assumption that what has happened is a result of deliberate harm".
"The fact they are an expert does not mean this cannot happen," he says.
"Where there is no clear explanation for what has happened - and that can sometimes happen in medicine - there is a danger of an expert being drawn into an explanation of evidence that is influenced by the prosecution's theory."
He tells the jury this is called "confirmation bias".

'Doctors don't always have the answers'

The experts that will be called in the trial have "met as a group and considered their opinions jointly", defence lawyer Ben Myers KC tells the court.
He then tells the jury that the burden is not on the defendant to provide an explanation of the events that unfolded.
"Doctors don't always have the answers and nor do medical experts," he says.
"The fact that Ms Letby can't explain a particular event... does not mean she is responsible for it."
Letby remains "adamant" that she has done nothing to harm any of the children mentioned in the indictment.
Mr Myers is now turning to each of the children in turn.

Child A died as a result of 'suboptimal care' and 'lack of fluids', says defence

The defence accepts there is a "possibility" that Child A died as the result of an air embolus (an injection of air).
But Ben Myers KC says the defence does not accept on this count that it was the cause of death.
He says the care given to Child A was "suboptimal" and the infant collapsed either as a result of a "lack of fluids" or a result of the "various lines that had been put into him" and the potential they interfered with his heart rate.
The air found inside Child A can happen "post mortem".

'Nothing' to support injection of air as jury told to 'look at the practicalities'

Child B, Ben Myers KC tells the court, had been in a "precarious position from birth" and was born "blue and floppy".
He says there is "nothing" to support an injection of air, or Child B's airway being blocked.
"She had other episodes where she struggled to breathe after the time on the indictment here," he says.
Next, he moves to Child C. He tells the jury although he is moving through the cases quickly, he does not mean this to be "heavy-handed" or cause offence to the families involved but that he wants to give an overview of the defence's argument.
"We accept in this case," he says, it is a "theoretical possibility" that Child C was injected with air.
He tells the jury to "look at the practicalities of that".
Child C was born "very premature": "As a starting point, sadly, a baby like that will be vulnerable to a range of complications."
This includes being more vulnerable to infection, and Child C should have been at a more specialist unit, Mr Myers says

Absence of evidence 'does not convert it into evidence of guilt'

Child D experienced delays to her medical care and was "never able to breath unaided", the jury is told.
"She was not put on antibiotics when she should have been," Ben Myers KC says.
He says the evidence shows infection was more likely than an injection of air.
Moving to Child E - who the prosecution said was attacked in front of his own mother - Mr Myers says there was no evidence of an air injection and "no evidence of direct trauma".
"There is no clear explanation in his case of what happened," he tells the jury but says that is not a good enough reason to assume Letby was responsible.
He then moves to count six and count 15, which involved the attempted murders of Child F and Child L. The prosecution alleges they were both poisoned with insulin.
He says the absence of evidence "does not convert it into evidence of guilt".
The IV bag, which was allegedly spiked with insulin, was changed when Letby was not on shift. The sample that was analysed was taken from this bag, which Letby had not come into contact with, Mr Myers says.
"The prosecution are fixed to the theory that all is due to Lucy Letby," he says.

Defence continues to blame care at Countess of Chester Hospital

Letby faces three charges of the attempted murder of Child G. On 6 September 2015, the prosecution claims she was fed an excessive amount of milk and vomited out of her cot and onto a nearby chair.
Ben Myers KC, for the defence, says doctors say Child G was "born on the margins of viability".
"She was a high-risk baby with a history of abdominal distension and vomiting", the court hears.
The defence also says Child G had exhibited signs of infection.
Next, he says the case of Child H is "complicated by suboptimal treatment" that she received at the beginning of her life. Letby faces two charges of attempted murder, which took place on consecutive nights.
Mr Myers says this is "another example of suboptimal care" at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
"What happened at the hospital had nothing to do with Lucy Letby. Despite all of that, she was there," he says.
Child I - who it is claimed Letby tried to kill four times before "succeeding" - experienced "a series of ongoing clinical problems that may well have been inevitable given her extreme prematurity".

'The Countess of Chester Hospital was well out of its depth'

Defence lawyer Ben Myers KC says "the Countess of Chester Hospital was well out of its depth" when it came to treating Child J, who Letby is accused of murdering.
He said the hospital delivered "inadequate care" to the child, who was born with a perforated and necrotic bowel.
Nothing, Mr Myers says, can link Child J's collapse to anything Letby did.
In the case of Child K, Letby is accused of doing nothing to help as the infant's oxygen levels dropped - a consultant who looked at the child found her breathing tube was dislodged.
"Ms Letby does not agree she has done that, nor was she seen to do that," Mr Myers tells the jury.
He disputes claims from the prosecution that the newborn was sedated and couldn't move.
"We say she wasn't and she could," he says.
He says the child "shouldn't have been" at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Screaming child 'more likely due to hunger' than air injection, according to the defence

Moving on to Child L and Child M, twin boys who survived.
Defence lawyer Ben Myers KC says "blame is being put on Ms Letby because there is no obvious alternative".
He continues: "The mere fact she is there when something happens is almost being used as an explanation for it happening."
In the case of Child N - for whom Letby faces three counts of attempted murder - he says the fact the child screamed for 30 minutes was more likely due to "hunger" than being injected with air.
One expert, the prosecution said previously, said he had never seen a neonate scream for such a long time.
Mr Myers says Child N should also not have been at the hospital.

'Signs of infection' in one triplet, and air found in another a 'natural occurrence'

There were "signs of infection" in one of the two triplets who died at the Countess of Chester Hospital, the defence has said.
Child O was found with "severe liver damage", and both he and his brother, Child P, died within the first week of their lives.
Ben Myers KC, representing Letby, says the liver damage in Child O can be attributed to CPR.
Meanwhile, any air that was identified in Child P post-mortem is a "natural occurrence" that happens after death.
"The build-up of air found in the child can be attributed to the air flowing into the baby for respiratory support," the jury is told.
"Once he collapsed it isn't clear why he didn't respond to resuscitation but that doesn't go so far as to show this was inflicted harm."
He addresses the final case, that of Child Q and says a "poorly functioning bowel is probably what led to him being unwell and vomiting".

'Where was she? What was she doing?'

After running through each individual case, Ben Myers KC, for the defence, turns to "Ms Letby and what her presence means at that time".
"It's a simple question, where was she, what was she doing?" he asks the jury.
But he tells them it is "important not to guess" because the evidence "cannot pinpoint" exactly where she was at any given moment.
"She can hardly be expected to remember," he says.
"We say there are many occasions when Lucy Letby was not there."
Some events took place when Letby wasn't there, but he says the prosecution has been selective with the events it has chosen.
Even when Letby was present "that doesn't get close to proving what the prosecution allege". He says it would be unfair to "treat presence as mere evidence of guilt".

Letby a 'young nurse who built her life around the neonatal unit'

Ben Myers KC describes Letby as a young nurse with no immediate family commitment and someone who "had built her life around the neonatal unit" and thus was willing to be called in at short notice.
"Someone in that position, in that role... is more likely to be there when deterioration happens, but that doesn't mean she made it happen," he says.
Letby will not always be able to recall specific details about children or events.
"In that regard, she is like any other witness in this case," Mr Myers says.
Regarding the medical treatment given at the neonatal unit, he says: "Nobody is going to expect perfection day in day out."
He says there were "problems with the way this unit performed that had nothing to do with Lucy Letby".

Hospital was 'downgraded': 'To blame Letby is unfair and inaccurate' - defence

Ben Myers KC tells the jury that there are other examples of "suboptimal treatment" within the Countess of Chester Hospital that are "legitimate targets of criticism".
The prosecution has "consistently" highlighted how some babies recovered once removed from Letby's orbit.
Yet the defence says: "Their improvement coincided with removal from the Countess of Chester Hospital which could not deliver, we say, on some occasions the care that was necessary or the expertise for some of the children it looked after."
Mr Myers says that blaming Letby for this is "unfair and inaccurate".
The Countess of Chester had a "lack of technical medical skills", accepted babies with too high a level of care need, and on occasion was "too busy".
He points to the fact that the hospital was "downgraded" by a clinical watchdog, and redesignated to a level one. He says the hospital "could not provide care at the level it did".

Letby 'became a target of blame' amid pressure to find explanation for high infant mortality rate

In the case of Child K, a consultant became concerned about the correlation between the presence of Letby and the rise in sudden collapses.
But Ben Myers KC says this became "self-serving and self-fulfilling" and there was evidence for his concern.
He says she "became a target of blame and wrongly so".
"If others have failed to provide appropriate care or the unit is too busy or not appropriately staff you may agree that creates a situation in which things can go wrong... mistakes made, records not kept," he tells the jury.
He says there was "pressure to find an explanation" behind the spike in infant deaths at the unit.

Defence concludes its opening statement

Amid a final call for the jury to consider the evidence, Ben Myers KC concludes his opening statement by saying: "This whole case is a complex case, it is not straightforward.
"And in that dock is a young woman who says this is not her fault."

2023.06.06 18:15 ieatoutoftrashcans Do you think it's possible to ride suicide safely?I got an idea...

So. I don't know about what can really be considered safe while hopping frieght but i'mma try out an idea I had eventually do before I do I think I should make sure im not a total wingnut. Either way I guess it'll work until it doesn't, when (not if)I do try it, but hear me out right quick.
I know someone who was raised in the Amishlike community I can't spell that starts with the M, and they were taught how to sew correctly and what not,so I can trust the work to be done correctly. I was going to have them attach straps to my bibs that could easily hold my weight plus an amount of g force to be decided after I research train derailment and other relevant information so I know roundabouts what to expect up to where the g force is going to kill me anyways, successfully attached or not(within limits reasonable to expect without derailing, if derailment occurs i feel the straps arent what keeps me from dying). Testing out their durability by hanging off random less dangerous stuff around town should let me get to safe enough to try on trains. after testing and I know I won't unattach from the car if I hit a bump or slack action jerk a me around good, unless i have a real problem like derailment I should be safe cause I'll need more luck then straps I would think if im a strapped to a car that derails. But my question is, am I missing something? No one has called me stupid for thinking I could do it yet, but I don't know if they realise I'm 100 percent serious about modifying my bibs in a way that'll improve my ability to ride suicides without danger and i could even sleep safely no worries. Part of my reason is I hate sitting around a hop for days and something stops but all you can get on while it's sided out is suicide and you cant find a rideable,I was taught suicides should be avoided, with or without a dog and to be super careful if your forced into a situation where you have to ride one and never try to ride suicide with a dog you want to keep unless you can carry it while keeping a solid hold of things and you cant sleep on a suicide safely. I've heard about finding something in the yard or near the hopout like a piece of wood and wedging it into a place where you can use it to ride suicide but I feel like that's kinda hot and easy to get spotted like that and you could hide easier without wood and just strapping to the car, if done right maybe even safely riding as you would be on a grainer porch or maybe even safer then some cars?maybe opens the door to all cars having a similar safety level for someone who is prepared and has no dog.If it works well enough maybe I can figure out how to make one for dogs that's just as safe too. That sounds like the harder problem out of the two ideas if i had to guess.
But really what do you think, is it safe? or is it just 100% a bad idea? Maybe you think you could do it better your way? Enlighten me so I can try to improve the idea and continue living as a single chunk of not piecemeal person. I got the balls to try it but the brains to ask around and make sure I'm not overlooking something, before I do. Also if you think canvas (duck canvas) isn't strong enough what cloth is? what would be the best option and how much would it cost to get bibs made out of it? Carharts are made put of duck canvas im told. Possible stronger option would be using climbing rope and making a harnesslike reinforcement or even getting a climbing harness and fusing it to your bibs or attaching the straps to the nearness instead of to the bibs( I think I would like to have it being a feature of my custom bibs I made opposed to using a climbing harness to hop frieght) Sorry for rambling but with this being super not safe if done wrong, I don't want to forget any of my ideas about the possibilities of how to modify gear with wha, in which way so that I don't end up with it being a poorly communicated idea that gets misunderstood leading to my injury because of something being assumed because my inability to clearly Share my Idea. Also got any ideas how bibs altered for this purpose could be helpful in other ways to persons whom are traveling folk?if you knew you had no tunnels or similar dangers on your current route, You could use it to strap onto the top of cars and watch the stars with a full clear field of vision(maybe that's worth the risk to some people?) without risk of something throwing you off if something goes wrong leaving only the two windows of time it takes for getting into position and strapping in as well as unstrapping and dismounting for you to be in danger of being thrown. like it would be safer i guess, but i dont know if id say it was safe, more less dangerous maybe, i dont feel safe surfing,im not a fan, maybe with the straps i wouldnt expect to die as much and i could get closer to finding the top of a car a place i could ride but I still think I am not willing to take up stargazing as my new happy hoppy hobby. Suicide rides though...
Tldr-attach straps to bibs attach bibs to suicide train cars, is it safe? Yes or no? Any advice?

2023.06.06 18:14 Ok-Mark-1239 Book suggestions for 7 year old (reading way above his reading level?)

My 2nd grader is reading way above his reading level, and he loves reading, and I'm trying to find books he might be interested in. He's finished the Harry potter series 3x already in the past year and that's probably his favorite book set.
Recently, he's read more nonfiction books as he's developed a lot of interest about history and just worldly stuff in general. Does anyone have any suggestions for books for books on these topics that a young child might be interested in?
Also open to suggestions for fiction books :)

2023.06.06 18:13 PMM-Hrishikesh India Mens International without Sunil Chhetri - irreplaceable void or opportunity to realign?

While Sunil has been an awesomely performing forward of our men's team, our gameplay has been overly reliant on this man's ability to score. So, without him, goal-hitting engine and game control will be democratized across equally influential forward, wingers, and midfielders; also, at the same time, his ability to persistently keep the opposition keeper working will be hard to replace.
India has inherited him from the pre-I-League, pre-ISL stages where Indian players seriously lacked exposure and confidence to drive a team-effort football. While our financially struggling I-league clubs got foreign players, we were still way underexposed to international quality of training, tactics, and physical preparation. Sunil has since been the central pillar of India's game and, fortunately, has had a long career at the national team level. Looking at Stimac's tactics and of coaches before him, I think our game has been around this man's capability to pierce the opposition's defense and hit the target. No other player can do this any better, even to date.
However, since the inception of ISL, the AIFF renewed its focus on Indian football, with the partners ingesting more money into the overall football development and promotional activities. This has opened avenues for more players to bring themselves to competitive standards alongside the abundantly available international coaches and peers to learn from. Today, we have a good youth cohort to choose from, and newer players are showing improved physical as well as tactical abilities. Remember, the individual confidence level has been considerably high, and we see more attempts at goals from players in various positions.
Sunil's retirement is inevitable; he is 38 now.
Sunil cannot be replaced, but India must rediscover itself beyond him. India's tactics will require to evolve its scoring mechanism in our international matches and find other ways to reach opponent goals. This will create a window of opportunity for other players to step in. and also to groom younger players with longer-term vision in mind.
In my view, the newer players will contribute from all their positions to stake a claim at shaping the game, and it will be a more distributed game for Team India.

2023.06.06 18:12 Jasong222 r/Training will go dark on June 12th & 13th in protest of Reddit's API changes that will kill 3rd party apps

Hello everyone,
As you may have already heard, a recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
The Situation:
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. ('API Calls' are how apps get information from Reddit's main servers to present to you).
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the desktop interface. In addition, many 3rd party apps offer functions for those differently abled, such as blind users, functions that do not exist in Reddit's official app.
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going private (going 'dark') to protest this policy.
(Going private means means that only *approved users will be able to access the subreddit. Since most subs don't use 'approved user' functions, this means basically everyone will not be able to access those subreddits during that time.)*
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do?

2023.06.06 18:12 jdubbs1585 [Pennsylvania] Cutting my position, offered a 22% pay cut to stay, can I turn down the new position and file?

I’ve recently found my boss is paranoid. Someone they didn’t trust was in my office, now I got put on the same level as that employee. they are now trying to find a way to get rid of me. they accused me of falsifying timesheets, not doing work, & more.
They are cutting my position and hiring 3rd party to do what I do. They offered me a position where the 3rd party supervises me but I do much less. There have already been situations where I can’t do my job because my permissions were changed. Not only will I do much less, but it's much cheaper to have me do all of the upcoming projects, yet, they are even cutting me out of those.
It’s over a 20% pay cut. Can I just file for unemployment? or will I get denied if I deny the new position? I would imagine the unemployment would probably also be an over 20% pay cut, or even more.

2023.06.06 18:11 Merrovech Calculating your own personal EPA

Hey folks, I just wanted to share a gambler's/statisticians trick for calculating your expected payout for any given sequence of actions. The wiki's EPA is (as far as I'm aware) EPA if you have a 100% success rate which is not extremely helpful unless you're able to 100% all the checks.
Note that the expected payouts here are only fully accurate if you've taken an infinite number of actions. When starting out, your earnings will be all over the place and will regress to the mean over time.
The most basic way to calculate your actual EPA is for a single action payout. Your expected earnings are just the decimal percent chance of success multiplied by the earnings on success. Example: 60% chance of 100 echo payout is an expected 60 echo payout.
If you're penalized on failure, you just add the two products together. Example: 60% chance of 100 echo payout and 40% chance of 100 echo loss is an expected payout of 60 echos + -40 echos, or 20 echos.
You can determine the expected payouts for any sequence of actions by adding the expected payout for each action in the sequence. If it's a carousel, where you don't get paid out till the end, you just need to multiply the number of actions needed for the carousel if you've got a 100% chance by 1+decimal percentage failure rate. Example: perfectly completing a carousel takes 10 actions and you have a 60% chance of success. You will need 10*1.4 or 14 actions.
If you're planning to sit down for a long grind and expect your skill to increase along the way, I've unfortunately got nothing. You'd have to create a logistic growth model for your skill level and then derive a formula to unify your skill growth and expected payout to come up with an "expected payout after n actions" model which is more math than I'm willing to do at the moment
Hope this helps some folks with determining whether it's better to take a 100% chance low payout or <100% chance high payout action

Kane - A place in the stars

A beautiful view
Kane is a rocky planet made primarily of Carbon-Sulphide and Silicate compounds. Its atmosphere is rich in Nitrogen and Hydrogen, the latter being of biological origin. The planet orbits a K-type star similar to 61 Cygni A, at a distance of 0.87 AU, has an axial inclination of 36.87° that is held stable by its two moons. A surface pressure of 4 ATM, a mass of 10% and a radius 8% greater than that of the Earth. Its atmosphere is made up of 63.7% Nitrogen, 32% Hydrogen, 0.9% Carbon Dioxide, 0.7% Argon, 0.2% Tetrahydrothiophene Vapor, 0.1% Methane and the remaining 2.2% are traces of other materials. Its surface has an ocean of Tetrahydrothiophene that covers 75% of its surface, and the mainland is made up mainly of Silicates and Carbons, with sulphide minerals. The age of the planet is around 5,200 million years, its average temperature is 32°C, and it has dry ice caps, the only ones that remain permanently do so in the great mountains and the coldest and most remote regions of the poles.
In the distant past the atmosphere was very dynamic and reactive, this allowed the appearance of an ocean of Tetrahydrothiophene on its surface, the ocean would have allowed the dissolution of carbon sulfides in it, this combined with its environment rich in carbon and sulfur compounds, made abiotic reactions took place that allowed the formation of carbon-sulfur biomolecules such as thiols, sulfones, sulfoxides, etc. Thiols play an important role in the stability and metabolism of biomolecules, since they are involved in the formation of disulfide bridges that confer the stability of proteins, amino acids, and enzymes. Sulfides also play an important role, since they are key components in energy storage molecules, such as adenosine triphosphates, in addition to having adaptations in their structures and bonds to function efficiently in their environment, this allowed them to adapt to their environment and resist changes in it, they began to form covalent and non-covalent bonds with the sulfur in their solvent, this would allow them to react selectively with the molecules there, over time they began to develop more specialized and complex enzymes to take advantage of Tetrahydrothiophene as a source of energy in its metabolic processes, and it began to be used for oxidation reactions but above all for reduction in the sulfur that makes it up to use it energetically, in addition to detoxification mechanisms using enzymes that metabolize tetrahydrothiophene, the carbon-sulphide bonds were getting stronger and began to adapt three-dimensional structures in their molecular structure to be able to adapt them even more to tetrahydrothiophene and extend their useful life. The adaptation of a three-dimensional molecular structure allowed them to form more complex structures known as XNA (Xenonucleic Acid), the column would be made from sulfur glucose and phosphodiester, while the base pairs would be made from compounds called Sulfurin, Sulfatin, Sulfucytosine and Sulfothymine that would be analogous to DNA compounds. When this happened, the first self-replicating biomolecules appeared. Replication consists of the separation of the strands of the molecule and the synthesis of new complementary strands using carbon-sulfur bases. These primitive self-replicating biomolecules would have easily broken down as they replicated, however the new biomolecules would have begun to adapt specialized enzymes to correct the errors of their predecessors in order to have more specialized offspring, this allowed to create stronger bonds capable of resisting the degradation and repair errors in your sequences. This acid has a double-stranded structure, where the nucleotide bases are paired by hydrogen bonds, it has specialized proteins and enzymes that act on its structure and allow it to remain stable in its environment, it has the ability to encode the genetic information necessary for the protein synthesis and the transmission of hereditary characteristics, as well as being involved in transcription processes. As a byproduct of their nitrogen-hydrogen metabolism, they began to produce ammonia, but instead of reducing it, they began to use it directly, for more efficient metabolic reactions, such as the synthesis of amino acids, proteins, and nucleotides. That was not the only new adaptation, but rather they would have also started to use it to form amides by reacting with carbon dioxide, and finally they would have integrated it into their structure to form complex biopolymers, finally the enzymes would have catalyzed thioester fatty acids (CS) and thiol alcohol (CSH) to form thiol phospholipids, these would be stronger and less reactive than conventional phospholipids, so they are more rigid and stable. Regarding their structure, they would have a polar head that would contain the phosphate group and a tail made up of carbon-sulfide chains, they would have greater resistance to extreme conditions such as high temperatures and chemically aggressive environments, in addition to having greater resistance to oxidation. Finally these would have joined amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids to form cell nuclei that would be covered by a membrane, these cells would be able to self-replicate and begin to develop on their own until they formed organisms. And it is here where LUCA makes its first appearance, LUCA was a prokaryotic bacterium and it gave rise to the Ammonibacteria, these would have enzymes and specialized proteins that would allow them to capture and reduce ammonia from the environment, the ammonia would break down in the cell through the dehydrogenase enzymes, the ammonia would be oxidized, releasing electrons and protons in the process, these would be used to produce hydrogen molecules, nitrogen would be released into the environment, thus enriching the atmosphere. The hydrogen would be processed in the cell converting it into usable energy which would be transported through the cell generating different reactions that would favor the cell itself. Other bacteria such as Hidrobacter would begin to assimilate Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide to reduce it to free hydrogen, and integrating carbon into their cell structure, this would lay the foundations of the modern Kanian atmosphere. With the passing of millions of years, the atmosphere began to be enriched to a great extent with nitrogen, and partially with hydrogen, this on the one hand brought benefits, with nitrogen the atmosphere was less hostile and made it more suitable for breathing, in addition to that reduced greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but on the other hand, the atmosphere began to be enriched with hydrogen and although there were species that used it as an energy source, the truth is that its use was not as widespread as it is today , the atmosphere began to fill excessively with hydrogen, until it reached a critical threshold and was present in the atmosphere in a significant way. This had important consequences for life at the time, since hydrogen was highly reactive and toxic to most forms of life that existed at the time. And so the first great mass extinction in Kane's history occurred. Hydrogen completely changed the geological structure and weathering of the planet, changing the way in which the crust is modified, marking a before and after in the history of the planet. After the chaos, finally the surviving bacteria such as Amonibacter, Hidrobacter and Hidrotrobacter would end up adapting to the hydrogen-rich environment, Hidrotrobacter would end up diverging to form the Protoacras, Protoacra was a type of flagellated prokaryotic bacterium adapted to be able to take advantage of hydrogen to the greatest extent that If possible, these bacteria would end up spreading throughout the world just like their predecessors, Protoacra became a very successful species by the standards of its time, it would end up diverging to form two of the three Eukaryotic domains on the planet, animals and mycelia. The metabolic system of these bacteria would be very similar to that of their predecessors, assimilating hydrogen and leaving carbon monoxide as a byproduct, these would be used by Hidrobacter and Amonibacter to produce glucose and releasing nitrogen and hydrogen as a byproduct, finally creating a stable system. Hidrobacter and Amonibacter would end up generating bacterial crossbreeding between them, giving rise to the third Eukaryotic domain, the Hydrozoans, they would end up adapting Photosynthesis and Chemosynthesis as an essential part of their metabolism, since they absorbed carbon monoxide and used the energy of their star to reduce it into hydrogen and glucose, later the flagellated Eukaryotes would carry these elements through the food chain. However, given that solar energy is more limited on this planet, they could not form organisms with a high level of complexity, however they did adapt black pigments in order to get the most out of the energy that was possible. The animal Eukaryotes for their part began to develop exponentially, adapting more effective methods of locomotion, and the first eyes on evolutionary history, this proved to be a huge leap in evolution. Although the mycelia did not have so many adaptations, they did manage to achieve very effective methods to obtain food in their environment. They were becoming more complex due to the availability of Hydrogen and its increasingly efficient methods to take advantage of it, until eventually reaching the current level after the mass extinctions.

2023.06.06 18:09 Hefty_Helicopter7794 Demoted the king and was ready for more.

- Apologies for my grammar, English is not my native language.
- And vague about company shizzle and longer than I anticipated, so grab a coffee, thee or other liquids.
- During this process I also informed my lawyer about the situation and just kept asking for all the damaging (for my future boss) emails.
- And also, without my SO I would have quit a long time ago, but with very expensive consequences.
First week of 2023 I started with my new job for bus driver, the company gave the chance for me to get my bus driver’s license and I would at least work for 3 years and after those 3 years I could go my own way if I wanted to.
I started with 5 others, we helped each other, had 3 - 4 exams, during that time I purchased a online program to get more practice test for the exams. Well, I went through those tests at all the first attempts (thank god, because I definitely underestimated it). I shared my account and it helped and eventually everyone got through the first phase (January) . During the first phase we had several instructors, and our main instructor “AH” (fake name XD) was…. Well to keep it civil, not nice and behaved like a king.
Then we got to the driving lessons Phase two (February)……. AH was thankfully not my driving instructor I got a colleague of him, and they were close “C”. At first nothing was wrong, first-time jitters, I was too careful at first but that was to be expected because a bus can cause a disaster when not handled properly.
Unfortunately, after my second lesson there was a dead in the family that hit harder than I expected, so I called for that lesson to be rescheduled, no problem and done. And I thought I was done for that day. Some crying and happy movies and being there for my SO, because it was his uncle.
Well just a few hours later I received an e-mail for a meeting, about my progress and future job. I wrote a email about the dead and that I didn’t know when the funeral was etc. I was able to go to the meeting.
Yeah, the meeting…. (With assistant manager (AM) and HR dude) Well first I was late apparently for 10 minutes, I read the wrong time so that sucked. Got a lecture about time, time time, Jada Jada (I think it was my 3rd time through my whole life I was late, my second time was cause of someone jumped in front of my train) I prefer to be awfully early. But anyways back to the meeting, I informed them again that I had a dead in the family and was still in mourning (they also received that email, and it was like the heard it for the first time). I asked them if that is the reason for this meeting, because it was only a few hours after I called my lesson off.
They said no it was of some complaints….. I said oke, what kind of complaints because nobody spoken to me about it. Well, you remember AH? He made a list(just him). I’m overweight and working on it everyone knows it and sees it.... everyone knows I can have 1 night I can eat a favorite dish without counting anything. I shared that I had a pizza (this was the day before an exam, so studying and I was home alone and not in the mood for cooking), because they know. …. It was a disgrace I had a pizza, your are not being “vital”blah bla blah” a whole speech I really think he looked something up to say “And that even they could eat an WHOLE pizza”….. we have pizza’s from 20 to I think 50 cm here, 20 cm is not big, it’s the size of a supermarket pizza maybe smaller.
- So the first complaint was I ate a pizza.
- Second complaint: I do not have respect for the instructors. Gob smacked……
- The third complaint struck hard on my integrity, because I want to help people, I’m doing it all my life. The complaint was, I made it for my fellow future colleagues a living hell. This was the moment I was MEGA gob smacked…. I literally didn’t know how to react.
After a couple of seconds, I just stared to ask questions( and ugly crying unfortunately not my best moment), who and why, because I was a month in and nobody told me, and AH had said in the mail that the others where to scarred to talk to me….? I’m not a bogeywoman, for some reason I always end up as the “caring mom” in the group. And some point I just blatantly asked if it was AH that made the complaints… and they couldn’t say that, but I knew enough.
After al that shit and me still crying 1 of them gave his opinion about me but tried to form it as a question. “You don’t give me the feeling of being happy with this job” . I just looked at him, I’m not driving the bus on this moment (my brain added, or you would probably be dead right now, thank god my anger could keep that on the inside). That was the end of that meeting.
I went crying home and a hour later I had my driving lesson again. I had told C that I had that meeting and she asked about it and I just went right back into ugly crying. She was shocked and angry, what the hell were they thinking…. From what it looked like she was ready to kick someone in the A. (unfortunately I found out later she was the one who told about something What AH saw a no respect to the instructors, the part about being to careful, I was saying yeah but.. those bikers or I don’t know what that car was going to do, etc.) This was common for everyone in the first days of driving lessons in a bus, so she felt guilty to me and angry to AH.
I couldn’t lose that feeling it kept bugging me and I had good contact with my fellow colleagues, so I tried the casually ask about it and that opened some doors. Everyone knew about it but didn’t know it was me…... well now they knew and were pissed, because I helped them. And found out that I wasn’t the only one who wanted nothing to do with “AH”. Even got info from groups who started a month earlier and made complaints about him.
The Revenge:
So I called the “education department” because I wanted it in writing that I don’t have the see his ass anymore. And OMG, apparently, they had heard about my “meeting” and they actually called all the other instructors I had for the first phase and they didn’t recognize me in those complaints… hallelujah! And mister AH had 8 to 9 complaints on his name from 8 to 9 different people (mostly women).
This was the moment I was going for mutual destruction, I already had a “bad name” because of AH so what the hell…! Only problem I had to keep in mind that I don’t do anything crazy that they could use for me getting fired, or otherwise I would have to pay everything back. So I needed to be careful.
So just keeping my cool started to talk to the other instructors and they also found out about all the complaints and also didn’t know it was me. Found out that ALL THE INSTRUCTORS (exept for C) hate AH, his way for instructing was years 60/70 style, he had the gall to say to 1 of his students to hit him with an iron pointer(a telescopic thing and point at something) if that student would do something again he didn’t like. But that was just 1 of the stories I heard. And started to encourage other people who had problems with AH to make a complaint as well at the education department.
The only thing I knew is that I wouldn’t get him for my driving exams and after more an more complaint kept coming in he was never scheduled for an exam again, nobody wanted him. Some of the higher ups wanted to contact me for the story, they were free and had my number. Never heard from them again.
First time of my driving exam I flunked, because before I had the exam AH had the nerv to come by and “wish me luck” (this was the moment that I started to think I definitely need therapy, but I was stubborn), so failed that day. Called to complain again to the education department Second time 2 week later I passed thank God and no AH before my exam. So, phase 2(first week March) was done.
Now was the moment for my transfer to my location of work, because of being short staffed it took longer, and at some point, I knew I needed help because I couldn’t digest the meeting that I had in February. So I wanted someone to talk to in this country we have laws, and you can ask for an inhouse doctor or a confidant. No question asked, because a inhouse doctor needs to evaluate if it is necessary. And they denied through email, BINGO. Later I got a email for signing my contract and talking about why I need to see a inhouse doctor, BINGO again, we have LAWS they cant ask for medical information.
My lawyer on this moment was happy with just this evidence. But I still wanted to work as a bus driver. So I went for my contract and they(not the same people from my first meeting, they just heard the “beautiful parts”) asked, how did it al go. And the stupid AH I am by not going to therapy, I broke down and threw everything on the table. The AH, not checking if he was right, all the other complaints, etc.
Even the part about my lawyer, that I wanted advice “how to handle the situation”. Now they were gob smacked and silent for a few minutes, while I was in full ugly cry. They asked questions, how and why, etc. Eventually I asked, Why do you think you know better then my lifestyle coach, personal trainer or dietician? Because HR dude knew about it, I was upfront about it and he still hired me. Silent again, this was the moment the manager asked if he could be excused. After this it went fast, they were gonna fix the contract signed it a week later.
After this, I called my therapist for an appointment and some EMDR. And now writing this I’m just thinking why the hell didn’t I go sooner, but that’s afterwards and can’t change that anymore.
When I wanted to sign the contract is heard from colleagues that AH was fired as an instructor and demoted to bus driver, because apparently he wasn’t fit to be a instructor. I was in full happy clapping happiness, I couldn’t reep the benefits anymore but the future bus drivers could, so that’s 1 was going in my head, ready for number 2, mister AM.
Started my mentoring(half of April), I drove on the work schedule of a bus driver, to learn the routes or how to work the system, etc. My mentor was awesome and bored, not in personality but he didn’t have to do much, sometimes I would ask “I need to turn left here if I’m correct?” so usually just a yes or a no would suffice. After a few days, my mentor said that my new AM wanted a meeting, probably that you can drive solo now. I needed 1 instruction day for some bus lines that I didn’t know, but could be handled in 1 day, because I was a quick study.
I went to the meeting (the beginning of May)and got fired, gob smacked again, only complements no complaints, because they found out that AH complaints were bogus. At first they said it was my behavior, so I asked “what behavior?” and then they switched to not being a match. But I think its damage control because I don’t have to pay for my driver’s license.
And I signed a contract that only in death I don’t have to pay for my driver’s license, and not death! Hahaha
But now a month later my mentor helped me to get a job interview for Thursday, a few towns over, so I think I’m going to be fine, it is in my old hometown plus point to that. And can’t wait to drive through the open country!
Thank you for reading!!
