2023.04.03 01:04 uhohmaplesyrupyoh AITA for bringing up my classmate faking his grandparents death and potentially getting him expelled from uni?
I only made this account to post this - less of an AITA and maybe more a word vomit?
I (20 F) am a university student (in Canada). The program I study has a good mix of large and smaller courses since a lot of them are hyper specific and focus on core areas or principles of the program.
Since I’m only in my second year, a large majority of my courses have about ~100 people so we end up going into smaller lectures for about an hour (tutorials) two times a week. Most people get close during these sessions since it’s only about 20 or so people inside each tutorial and you may end up having the same people across multiple tutorials. If people aren’t in my major, they don’t really take the courses beyond the first year ones.
A classmate of mine (21 M - American) has been in several tutorials with me since I started uni two years ago. His personality and mine don’t gel together very well - he’s the kind of guy who plays devil’s advocate and tries to correct the TA and professor. He’s very cynical and pessimistic but in a way where it’s clear he thinks that this makes him better than other people. As in, he has said before that people who are bubbly and very happy ‘must not be very bright’ and ‘haven’t experienced what the real world is like yet’. I’m happy 90% of the time - so he's made some small comments here and there questioning my intelligence or downplaying my interests and accomplishments.
We had to work together on an assignment last year but 30% through he said that his grandparents had passed away. They were his last living grandparents - he said his other grandparents had passed right before he started university. He said he was extremely distraught and the whole experience made me feel quite bad for disliking him. I’ve experienced grief before and while I didn’t condone his behaviour I can understand how losing people close to you can change you. I said I understood and did the assignment - it was semester long - by myself. In another class, he asked to work with me since I knew what he was going through. I planned on doing that one by myself regardless so I agreed. We both got full marks on the assignments and that was that for a while.
We had classes together again this semester. He mentioned during the icebreaker portion of my first Monday course that he had gone south to Mississippi to visit his grandparents. HIS GRANDPARENTS. I thought to myself, ‘Oh my, visiting their gravestones is such a private thing I’m surprised he feels comfortable sharing this on the first day’. Until he mentioned how he was so happy to eat his grandmother's Southern home cooking.
I despise lying - but, what’s done is done. I was quite miffed and a bit confused. Later in the coinciding tutorial, the TA brought up the ‘southern home cooking’ aspect and they briefly discussed it. So, they're 100% alive - and not just one pair, both of them.
The semester is now almost over - in fact, I had my last class before exams on Friday. During the 2nd last tutorial he made a comment about how he was in favour of the Mississippi Jim Crow-esque laws that were being discussed (he brought it up). He then turned in his chair, looked at me and the only other Black person in the tutorial and said ‘It doesn’t sound that bad, right?’. I had been looking out the window but I turned and asked him why he phrased the question like that and what he was trying to say.
He rolled his eyes and in a tone like he was speaking to a baby said - ‘Do you even know what we’re talking about? Or is it too advanced for you - should I have mentioned pink or birdies and flowers? It concerns your brothers and sisters so maybe try and pay attention?’ (For context: almost all of my school supplies are baby pink and a running ‘’joke’’ in some of my courses is the fact that the custom slideshow themes I make are almost always ‘’cute’’ - the brothesister is just because I'm East African-Canadian).
I was quite irked so I spoke without thinking.. Before the TA could cut in I said ‘What do you gain from acting like I’m dumb? Why do you always cause drama? Then again, you are the guy who faked his grandparents death so you could piggyback off my 4.0’ (I’m paraphrasing). Nobody spoke for a moment so I shared what I thought on the topic, made a light joke with the boy he had singled out with me and the tension in the room went away. My TA had an odd expression when we ended class but I had completely forgotten what I had said.
Fast forward to the next week and he’s gone but everybody in the main section was gossiping. The professor started class off with a ~20 minute discussion on academic violations and forgery. I learnt through those around me the following:
Apparently, he had told only ½ of his professors that they had died and the other half that they didn’t. (I guess instead of dropping half his courses he made an elaborate lie to avoid having to do more work or paying the fees.) Professors in my programs are pretty lax in regards to their personalities (not their grading) so they didn’t ask for any proof. Except for one. He (apparently) gave her death certificates and obituaries. And for some courses he took in the first semester he had made certificates and obituaries for the pair that he claimed died the summer before. They must not have verified them as only now did they find out they’re fake. People said that those he worked with were getting emails from the academic advisor’s/dean’s office. He apparently already violated the university code and was charged. Even now, he’s doubled down.
I received an email asking for me to send ovepresent any and all communication regarding the coursework we were supposed to do together and when he mentioned his grandparents.
He mass-deleted his side of the texts (not the brightest bulb but Americans, eh?) and asked me to delete the emails he had sent me. He also tried to access the documents for the assignments - I guess to make it seem like he did work?
I had screenshotted the text messages earlier in the semester when I knew he was lying to show my friends when I was telling them about the whole thing. Remembering what he’d said, I blocked his access and compiled everything together - mentioning the fact that he deleted his end of the conversations now - and sent it over.
His case went from a 12 month suspension to being sent to the University Tribunal. He could be expelled. A lot of people are saying he had it coming and that he’s getting what he deserved but part of me wonders if perhaps I did a bit too much? I just needed to get this off my chest since the idea that I might’ve ruined someone’s life is eating away at me a bit. I don’t believe in bad people, just bad actions. It’s not like I suffered and I wasn’t personally wronged that much?
