MBIRIKANI, Kenya - Parkeru Ntereka lost almost half of his goat herd to hungry lions that wandered into his pen located near Kenya's iconic Amboseli national park.
The compensation does not match the market rate for cows, goats and sheep.
"Cows are expensive and can cost as much as 80,000 Kenyan shillings each. One cannot compare 80,000 shillings to 30,000 shillings. We receive very little compensation. That is why we become angry and despite receiving compensation, we come out and kill the lions," he told The Associated Press.
Rosi Lekimankusi, a mother of five, said 13 of her goats were killed by lions in the same village, Mbirikani in Kajiado County, just 150 kilometers from the capital, Nairobi.
Last month, one of Kenya's oldest lions, Loonkiito, was speared to death as it wandered out of the Amboseli national park in search for food.
Ntereka, the herder who lost almost half his goats, lives in fear of another lion attack.

My boyfriend's (33) brother (35) has been reeking havoc for the past few months. We are at a loss as to how to tackle the issue legally to get his family peace and his brother help. The initial incident occurred in 2020 when he was placed on a 5150 hold after taking too many psychedelics. He was diagnosed with Bipolar II while in treatment. He was taking his Antipsychotic meds until a few months ago. Since then he has quit his job, started gambling again, goes days without sleeping, runs around partying and doing drugs, has threatened family and friends, stolen tens of thousands of dollars, broken into houses and damaged property. We have offered to get him help in various ways but he is adament that he does not want anyone "controlling him."
The family consists of Mom (67), Dad (81), and the brothers: Tim (33), Sam (35), and Ron (37).

So I've worked at a hospital as a per diem physical therapist for almost four years now. When I got hired my manager was very clear that if I added availability for a shift I would get that shift unless the census was low. I can basically work as much as I want and create my own schedule. I'm unable to work full time because I have another job working for my family business. My mom owns the business and my siblings and I help run it, it has to do with care for the elderly. I started working for the family business about four years ago after I graduated physical therapy school. I make the least out of my 3 other older siblings who have all worked there longer and have more job responsibilities.
This post is about the hospital job. I noticed the dynamic was weird in the department from the very beginning, it can be competitive, clique and there is a lot of shit talking. I basically tried to stay out of it and do a good job at work. I always felt on the outs but was able to make a few friends...
However I recently got promoted to a lead position... On days I'm scheduled as a lead I come in an hour early to make the schedule and leave an hour early. I basically manage all calls coming in to the physical therapy department and I get paid 10% more. There were some full time people who were unhappy I got this opportunity and they didn't. However, those people were mostly either hired after me (lower seniority) or are physical therapy assistants (work under physical therapists).
I noticed a big shift in most of my relationships, the few friends I made faded away. The dynamic in the department became worse shortly after I was promoted when another per diem team member pointed out to the union that per diem workers get to choose the major and minor holidays they work every year according to our contract... Our manager had been breaking this rule for years unbeknownst to m. This employee had apparently read through the contract and brought it up to the union. Now all the full time people hate the per diem staff because they get to choose their holidays, even though I had nothing to do with this. They have said it's not fair we get to make our own schedule, they think we get paid too much, they don't think we should get choice of holidays to work and they don't think we should get to be in lead positions. However, this is standard practice for per diem staff in hospitals (I'm not sure about the lead part, but I know everything else is). My sister works as a per diem nurse at a hospital and said high pay, making your own schedule and choosing holidays are normal since you don't get benefits and most per diems have other jobs which is why the schedules are flexible.
Recently I've been having people make really weird comments towards me. This one girl asked why I work here if I work for my family business. I asked her what she meant and she said don't you own the business and make a lot of money? Without going into it I said no, I actually make more money at the hospital which is the truth and she was very surprised. I'm always pretty hush hush about my family business, I've told people what it is but not the name of it or where it's located. Then she asked what my husband does and I said he's a programmer and she went on to talk about how that job makes so much which is not true... He makes decent money, but $29/hour is not a crazy amount of money for Southern California. I just replied vaguely saying he makes okay money and left. She is also a per diem therapist with lower seniority than me. I have a feeling she would like more shifts, but we're scheduled according to seniority and she's brand new.
Another weird comment... Another girl who I like got really weird when I told her my husband and I were thinking about putting an offer on a house. I was excited and was making conversation which we usually do. She asked how much it was and I said $750,000 because that's the truth and there's no point in lying as housing sales are public record. She could not believe I could afford that and asked me, "How can you possibly afford that"... I changed the subject... She's not married, so maybe she doesn't understand joint income. She also lives in an underpopulated desert area in a different county where the cost of living is less. I live in Los Angeles County near my family and other job and commute to work. Right now in 2023 in Los Angeles county $750,000 for a 3 bedroom 2 bath in a safe neighborhood is average or below average actually according to my google search.
My manager who I loved just left, and one of the full time therapists who doesn't seem to like per diem therapists was hired as manager. I'm worried about the future, but we are bound by a union contract so there aren't a lot of changes that can be made. Feeling isolated and constantly judged, it's been getting to me and this is the first time I've considered leaving this job even though my job pays very well, is flexible, I'm in a lead position and have earned seniority. My solicitor has messaged me this morning to say that there is no certificate of compliance for the boiler to show the installation met current regulations at the time of installation nor is there any certificates shown on the local search.
The seller has agreed to put in place indemnity insurance but from what I’ve read that seems to only cover me against any financial loss suffered in the unlikely result of the action being taken by the local authority for a breach of building regulations.
I feel a bit unsure of what to do next, especially with completion being pushed for Friday (I am in no rush, but the seller is).
Should I arrange for the boiler to be checked to ensure it complies with regulations? I don’t want to take the piss but I also want to make sure the property is safe.
Apparently the boiler was serviced in 2021 but there isn’t a copy of the paperwork for this.

 | Seems like our actions in protest to the anti lqbtq+ sentiment did get the attention of the town council, ultimately leading to the pastor calling for support for the proposed drag ban having to apologize to the members of the town council for causing a potential disturbance of the meeting. Turns out what they were trying to do was out of the scope of the town council and they didn’t act in a rational way (shocker) by not talking to the whole council. This is a new Facebook post in a Christian group quoting an email from that pastor today. I unfortunately couldn’t attend the meeting but would love to hear if anyone did and what the atmosphere was. Night before last 3 "missionaries " came in, ignorant super fundy types who are "walking " across the USA to tell everyone how mad God is at them. I'd heard from other locations that they were out and about, so was looking forward to it😁.
They came in while I was parked in the food service corner for a break. They did their spiel on my very sweet coworker, holding up 3 or 4 customers in line. I marched up, handed them back their "invitation, " they refused it, I tore it in half and told them to vacate the premises.

Being an insomniac I do have bursts of random cleaning late at night, but last night wasn't one of them. I live alone in my country house way off the road, so waking up to something so obviously inexplicable was very concerning. I tried to remember if I had woken in the night and done something to cause the smell, but after a few moments of deep consideration I knew I hadn't. The reason? I was out of bleach.
I got out of bed and my body hurt all over. This isn't new, I'm in my late 40's and a farmer, my lifestyle is hard on my meatsuit. What was new was the unfamiliar pains in muscles I don't normally use on a regular basis. Growing concerned I started looking around and checking the house for the source of the smell, but my two cows had started their crying to be milked and the rooster was crowing like mad to be let out of the coop with his flock, so I threw on clothes and got to work.
Later that night after helping my only pig birth her piglets, I was stretched out in my large deep tub to soak away the day's labors when I remembered the oddities of the morning. I pondered what it could have been about but growing increasingly tired I decided to try to make it an early night. I was just tired and confused, sure it was nothing.
The next morning it happened again. This time I was woken from a deep sleep, so was even more disoriented. It was still dark and early, but the smell was stronger. When I checked the time I realized it was only 3am and the bleach smell was so strong it burned my nose and eyes. I got out of bed determined to find the source of this disconcerting situation, but when I put weight on my legs they buckled under me. Something was very wrong with my body so I called 911 to send an ambulance. What they found will confound me forever.
One of my kidneys is gone. There's no evidence of a wound, no scar tissue, no evidence it was ever there to begin with. I also have somehow misplaced half my liver. Again, it's just...gone. Police searched my home and property and found evidence that my pig's trough had human tissue in it. The reason I couldn't stand? A quarter of my calves in both legs are gone as well. It's like the connective tissues never existed despite all the evidence to the contrary. They are holding me for two days while my brother came to care for my animals.
He called me this morning and told me something doesn't feel right. I asked him if he noticed anything strange, and he admitted that he woke up unexpectedly to the smell of bleach. I got out of bed and my body hurt all over. This isn't new, I'm in my late 40's and a farmer, my lifestyle is hard on my meatsuit. What was new was the unfamiliar pains in muscles I don't normally use on a regular basis. Growing concerned I started looking around and checking the house for the source of the smell, but my two cows had started their crying to be milked and the rooster was crowing like mad to be let out of the coop with his flock, so I threw on clothes and got to work.
Later that night after helping my only pig birth her piglets, I was stretched out in my large deep tub to soak away the day's labors when I remembered the oddities of the morning. I pondered what it could have been about but growing increasingly tired I decided to try to make it an early night. I was just tired and confused, sure it was nothing.
The next morning it happened again. This time I was woken from a deep sleep, so was even more disoriented. It was still dark and early, but the smell was stronger. When I checked the time I realized it was only 3am and the bleach smell was so strong it burned my nose and eyes. I got out of bed determined to find the source of this disconcerting situation, but when I put weight on my legs they buckled under me. Something was very wrong with my body so I called 911 to send an ambulance. What they found will confound me forever.
One of my kidneys is gone. There's no evidence of a wound, no scar tissue, no evidence it was ever there to begin with. I also have somehow misplaced half my liver. Again, it's just...gone.
