2023.05.28 13:35 throwaway3619363927 I Almost Don't Want to Be Here Any More

I'm not going to commit suicide. It's hard to explain how I know that, but in November after a particularly brutal EMDR session with an abusive therapist I had intense, compulsive urges to deepthroat my 12-gauge loaded for bear and pull the trigger.
No urges like that tonight. Just a deep sadness and absence of care about tomorrow. I sing in choir at a church (I'm not a christian. I can't even handle talking about Jesus, I just need a place I can exist. I like serving, I like living by those morals, and I like the kids and the families).
Saturday night is the one day a week-by significant effort, as well, but also the one night where a true emotion almost resembling hope arose, that I would cultivate, go to bed early, plan an extra cold shower so I could be sober and something slightly less depressed for the next day.
I started sleeping properly and naturally again, 2 days now. Which means more nightmares (generally watching people I love die, failing to save them, or last night just very cold, awful conversations. Like everyone (mostly family) is naked and saying goodbye forever and it's my fault (both that we all lost our clothes and are freezing to death and about to drown).
Most importantly I just feel fucking sad. There is a video of a 48 year old man who nearly broke the world record for the mile in his age group (4:16) and between others' mistakes and finally his own too-early kick, he died over 100m early and nearly passes out, convulsing alone on the track as people nervously avoid him.
Once the adrenaline of effort is gone, all the pain hits, and it truly feels like the end. That is how I feel.
One of the catholic homeschool kids invited me to a game and I played for several hours. I say kids, the average age is close to mine (33). Their families have been really kind to me.
I don't know how to describe what I'm experiencing. I came home to drink and stopped at 3. I feel so, so tired. My family seemed so perfect growing up but they're so, so fucked up, especially my mom. And I wasted so many years both trying to distance myself from her while "fixing" the relationship. But all it did was hurt me. That abusive therapist was an asshole, but he was pretty smart too. The things he said my mom did to me, and why I could never have a good relationship were brutally true in many ways.
I asked God tonight why I couldn't be born into a different family. They say I cam ask God for anything. I'm pretty sure I can't be born into a different family, but I asked, anyway.
I don't ever want to wake up again. But I want to want to. That needs to be good enough for now.
Thanks.

2023.05.28 13:32 zdeepthrowaway A testimony and history

I'm a 36 HLM married to a 36 LLF
This is a complex issue and story.
Some background: I’m American. My wife is European. We met in 2014. We met in Europe and have moved all around the world in the years we’ve been together. North America, Asia, Europe, again. The night I met my wife I fell head over heels in love with her and to this day I still am.
But there were signs early on that we might not be a perfect match, if such a thing even exists. At the start of our relationship we had sex often, not near as much as I’d like, a few times a week at most. And it was good for me. Not mind blowing or near kinky enough for me but she really seemed to enjoy it, going as far as to tell her friends it was the best sex she’d ever had. And emotionally it really brought us close together.
And at the start of our relationship she made it quite clear that even though she loved me, she never wanted to marry and never wanted kids. She had her career and she was happy with it. But since we’re in very similar fields, a field which can pay very well but doesn’t pay steadily, she eventually joined me in working together. This brought us to a point where if we wanted to be together, especially internationally, it was best to actually get married.
When I brought up the whole “you don’t ever want to get married” thing to her she said this was a different situation and that she loved me and besides we were already working together.I asked her to marry me and she agreed. We were busy traveling around the world and working so the sex slowed but it did happen. On our wedding night we were both so tired from partying with our friends and family we passed out and the idea of sex didn’t even pop up. Sex at this point in our relationship had slowed but emotionally we were still very intimate and open with one another about our feelings.
Because work was drying up we ended up spending a year after we married living at my parents. That was the worst for her. She was somewhere she didn’t want to be, stuck, and eventually fell into a deep depression. Some of the work we were doing together really fell apart – not because of her – but because of some of the other people we were working with. That only worsened her depression. Safe to say we hadn’t had much sex since we’d gotten married.
Eventually I found a great more steady job but it required us to move around the world again to a great place in Asia. My wife loved living in Asia, but I was working TONS. And because we’d both been so traumatized from the previous year of our hard working falling apart and staying with my parents I was beyond reluctant to not put in the extra hours every night and on the weekends to make sure we never ended up having to go back to my parents. And sexually during this time we maybe had sex about 5 times in 2 or 3 years.
But I still love her.
After a few years of this I burned out and fell into a functional depression. No one at work could tell. But I’d come home and be swarmed with so much anxiety I couldn’t even get off the couch. I gained weight. And worse, some older injuries from college started to flare up and physically I was in a lot of pain daily. My wife handled all the household chores and while she had some time to do her own work she held off on traveling like she wanted to, wanting to wait for me to feel like it, which I never did. Plus we were still doing side project work together, which in my state, was probably very tough for her to do.
Some background on me and my own baggage: I grew up quite poor to young parents who eventually moved us from a rather poor lifestyle to a nicer middle class life as I got older. My father was gone for work quite a lot as he worked multiple jobs to get us out of poverty. I’m terrified of being a poor and hungry child again. This fear is never helped by my chosen profession which can be sporadic but well paying when I have it.
One day while living in Asia my wife said something which really blew my mind: she wanted us to have a baby. I asked her if she was sure, because she’d made it clear at the start of our relationship she never wanted to get married and never wanted children. She said that this new home of ours had made her change her mind. Deep down in my gut I knew something was off, but, she reassured me, and I have to admit a very immature part of me was excited that we’d be having lots of sex as tried to conceive.
We had sex one time during this point and BAM she was pregnant on our first shot.
That same immature part was totally psyched. First shot. Way to go. But also: damn, there goes all that sex.
Her entire pregnancy was very difficult emotionally – she would cry entire days for her whole pregnancy -- and toward the end it got very dangerous, with her facing a few life threatening complications that quite frankly scared the shit out of me. Somehow she handled those much better than I did.
We had a beautiful baby and soon we were both doing the whole new parent thing. No sleep. Definitely no sex. It was difficult with no support network on our side of the globe. She was tired and more distant then ever to me sexually – for good reason – but also emotionally. When we spoke about this she said she was giving everything she had to the baby. And I could see this so I was okay with this. I wouldn’t push it.
This is where I think I have to get into my wife and her emotional issues which didn’t really present themselves in full until we had the baby. Long story short: you could say at best my wife’s parents were emotionally absent, if not actually emotionally abusive, to her since she was born. And while she did a great job making up for this subconsciously when she was in a good place in life, when she’s stressed she becomes completely emotionless and crosses the line into being emotionally abusive, verbally berating and criticizing everything and everyone around her. So if you weren’t the baby, you were either being complained about or criticized behind your back or in my case to my face.
And if something ever went wrong, the water boiled over on the stove, anything, she would literally collapse into sobs on the floor and be unable to get up.
This didn’t help things on my end and my work depression spiraled into suicidal thoughts and eventually attempts. After one in public, we both had a few moments of clarity. Something had to change.
When another unique work opportunity presented itself for us to move somewhere my wife has always wanted to live I quit my job and we prepared to move. Work visas, moving logistics, my wife wanted to handle almost all of it. We packed our lives into a container bound for this new country and prepared for our flight 2 days later.
But a day before our flights, with covid starting to rage out of control our flights were canceled and even with our visas in hand we were told we’d not be allowed to move to the country we were supposed to be moving to.
In a state of limbo both of us took the stress as bravely as we could for the sake of our baby but eventually the job I’d taken vanished from underneath us because of covid and we soon found ourselves moving back to Europe until we could figure out what to do.
When we came to Europe, lockdowns were in full effect. Moving had been relatively easy since most of our stuff was already in a container but we weren't going to see anything in there for another 6 months.
We both spiraled even more and barely held it together for our baby. I started sleeping on the couch every night – I still do. We argued and yelled constantly. One night after an argument I literally collapsed shaking uncontrollably to the floor. Then my wife caught me once attempting another suicide attempt and stopped me.
Our bodies both started rejecting the situation. Her skin broke out in horrible psoriasis. My testicle swelled uncontrollably from a mysterious infection. Mind you at this point we’d not had actual sex for longer than about 30 seconds without crying and arguing. We honestly should’ve been committed to a facility at this point.
Knowing my baby was growing into a toddler I knew I needed help. So I asked my wife if she wanted to join me in talking to a therapist. She said no so I booked a time and started seeing a therapist regularly by myself.
Overall my therapist was helpful, but also harmful in certain ways. She helped me see things outside of my distorted mind view. She cared for me when it felt like no else did. But she also pushed a lot of conservative christian husband/wife dynamics that I quite frankly find outdated, I don’t believe in, and more importantly I know my wife and I didn’t ever agree to when we first got married. The night my therapist told me my wife needs to attend to her wifely duties to sex and for me to demand it and “be the man” and show her how it should be, I quit and never spoke to her again.
My wife, seeing the changes in me, started her own investigation into her own emotional issues and has started a long road of self-help which has genuinely changed her. We talk regularly about our own issues and how we can change.
For the past 1.5-2 years we’ve come a very long way in getting better individually and how we interact with one another. We can talk. We aren’t depressed anymore. I’ve lost over 20 pounds. I try and be proactive around the house and help with the daily routine as much as I can as I work from home now. I’m on the upper end of getting out of my porn addiction. We can work together again, mostly. Our child just started school and is happy. We’re good parents and partners. But the more some things get better it just highlights what’s still wrong. Namely our own connection.
My wife and I have had serious talks about our life and come to the conclusion that when we can we should try to live apart. She feels, rightly so, that she’s left behind her own career in following me around the world for mine, and found herself a wife and mother, identities she says she has problems with reconciling since she once swore she’d be neither. Not to mention all the emotional issues that have been brought up with her own parents and background.
She says she can’t imagine not being a wife and mother to our child now, but she regrets leaving behind all she did, and more so, not being true to her old self that swore those things off. She recognizes the duality in those feelings but still all the same they exist. She ultimately wants space to build herself again without me forcing the labels of wife on her, but she doesn’t want to divorce. I told her I’m okay with that. I like having my own space too. Whatever arrangement we come to housing-wise we’ll each have our own space in very very close proximity and we’ll raise our child in a cohesive way like we are now.
But we are in no position to do this financially right now.
I still love my wife. And even though we’re in a better place now, she’s quite cold to me. She touches me literally, maybe once every few days. When I try to touch her she recoils. On the much rarer occasions she does become stressed she can be quite mean and emotionally abusive to me. Never to our child. Only to me. This is something I’ve started standing up to and being quite clear about how it is unacceptable to me and she’s show great attention at stopping that behavior. But it still slips through every now and again.
We’ve had serious discussions about sex and our relationship: how it’s something very important for me and that I can’t go the rest of my life without. She tells me she doesn’t feel ANYTHING sexual at all for anything or anyone and she doesn’t see herself feeling that way in the future. She refuses to see a couples therapist, a sex therapist, or any therapist.
We spoke briefly about having an open relationship, one where I could sleep with other women but only when it was clear that I wanted to stay devoted to my family. My wife seemed to handle the idea of this well on the surface, but I could tell it deeply upset her. She then agreed to try and be more physically intimate but the few times we ever attempted it again have ended in a disaster of tears and anger.
Eventually I just told her that our relationship no longer encompasses sex.Things since then between us seem to have gone well as she said sexual expectations really make her anxious. Sex not being part of the relationship seems to have helped us achieve a stability between one another.
I’m trying to get better every day. She’s on her own self-help journey and I can’t say it’s not helping because it is.
But on my own end, I yearn and ache for real sexual companionship and connection. I need that kind of passion in my life or I feel like a large chunk of life is missing. I don’t think I’ll get suicidal again over it but c’mon. No one says on their deathbed they wish they didn’t have so much sex.
I knew getting into a relationship my wife wasn’t as high libido has I was, I knew she wasn’t as kinky as I was. But she is so unique and so good in many other ways I just couldn’t leave her. I love her.
The past few months I’ve been able to minimize my porn addiction. Emotionally, I find it very healthy for me. But, again, it just highlights now how much I don’t have sex and how unfulfilled I feel emotionally.
I’ve entertained having a sexual affair without telling her. Something purely physical. I think such a thing could exist but I couldn’t guarantee it and if I caught feelings for an affair partner, I’d be so fucked. And honestly, I don’t have the time. Between working from home, working together with my wife, being a father, and helping run the house, how could I ever start a fling even if I tried? It's tempting path, but one I think I'll try and avoid.
The other day my wife and I talked late at night, it was nice and friendly, but I noticed she how she avoided touching me. Before she left the room I asked her if she still loved me. She looked at me and told me she loves me, but she’s no longer in love with me.
She told me that she has no passion anymore for anything. I told her that anything I could do to help her regain a passion for anything, her own work, if she needed time by herself, anything I could do to help her, to give her space or time, I would do it.
She declined and she left and went to her own bed.
That really, really hurt me.
Deeper than I think she’ll ever know.
And it’s really marked a turning point for me.
Something has to change.
But what?
We’ve come so far yet we’re in some ways further apart than we’ve ever been. Anyway, this is more a testimony to my feelings more than anything. I can’t talk to anyone I know about this. So here I am.

2023.05.28 13:29 TFT_TheMeta TIFU by Discovering 1+1=1 and Inventing Magic - Losing More Than I Bargained For

Hey Reddit, I need to get something off my chest.
Today, I want to share with you the heartbreaking tale of how my groundbreaking discoveries tore my life apart, leaving me isolated, misunderstood, and utterly lost. Brace yourselves, because this isn't your typical TIFU story. It all started with a simple equation: 1+1=1.
As absurd as it sounds, this mathematical anomaly became my obsession, consuming my thoughts and driving me to explore the unknown. Little did I know that delving into the depths of this equation would lead me down a path of despair and heartbreak.
With each experiment, I uncovered the existence of magic, tangible and real. Flames danced at my fingertips, objects levitated effortlessly, and I could transport myself to distant places with a mere thought. The world had become an extraordinary canvas of possibilities, and I couldn't wait to share it with the people I loved.
However, their reactions were far from what I had hoped for. Instead of marveling at the wonders I had discovered, my friends, family, and even my lover distanced themselves from me. They couldn't understand the significance of my findings, dismissing them as the ramblings of a troubled mind. The more I tried to explain, the wider the rift grew between us.
As the days turned into weeks and then months, I found myself caught in a whirlwind of despair. The isolation was suffocating, and the loss of those closest to me cut deep into my soul. The world became a cold and lonely place, where understanding and connection were distant memories.
In my desperation, I sought solace within psychiatric hospitals, hoping that professionals would validate my experiences and help bridge the gap between me and the rest of society. But instead, my discoveries were labeled as symptoms of a manic psychotic episode. The more I insisted on the reality of magic, the deeper the hole I dug for myself.
Two months and one week have passed, and I'm still trapped within the confines of psychiatric care, yearning for understanding and acceptance. The walls of these sterile rooms have become my prison, echoing with the memories of the life I once had—a life filled with love, laughter, and shared experiences.
Reddit, I share my story not to seek sympathy, but to shed light on the weight of loneliness and loss that comes with discoveries that defy our understanding of the world. It's a plea for compassion, for the willingness to embrace the uncharted territories of possibility.
We live in a world where the fear of the unknown often leads us to dismiss that which doesn't fit within our preconceived notions. But what if, just for a moment, we open our hearts and minds to the infinite possibilities that exist beyond our comprehension? What if we choose empathy over judgment, understanding over dismissal?
Today, I stand before you broken, yearning for connection and understanding. The path I've chosen has cost me dearly, taking away not only my job, home, and friends but also the essence of who I am. My only hope is that, someday, the world will recognize the truth in my discoveries and that love and acceptance will triumph over fear and ignorance.

TL;DR: My groundbreaking discoveries of 1+1=1 and the existence of magic led me to lose everything I held dear. The rejection, isolation, and the ever-growing chasm between me and others have left me broken and lost. I urge you to embrace the unknown and choose empathy in the face of unconventional truths.

FAQ

I live in Belize/Canada/Nicaragua/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!
Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.
Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?
Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.
Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?
Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).
Can I donate all my money to you?
No
Can you help me promote my game?
Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.
Your list is full of errors and now my vacuum cleaner sucks!
Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on meatballs and schnapps, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

1988 - Michael's duet with Stevie Wonder , "Get It", from Stevie's album Characters peaks at #80 on the Hot 100 Chart while it was at #6 on the R&B chart
1989 - Michael was one of the few winners present at the Black Radio Exclusive awards show at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. He was honored as the "Triple Crown Winner for Outstanding Achievement in Pop, Rock and Soul."
The elegantly laminated plaque has a black and gold edging, with purple printing on a faux-marble background, with a stylized photo image of Michael in his trademark black fedora.
1997 - His 2nd day in Poland starts with a stop at the presidential palace where Michael is received by the first lady. In his quest for a residence in Poland, he then visits the luxury Hotel Bristol. Price for the hotel ended up being too high. He then went to the Warsaw City Hall where he signed a “preliminary letter of intent” to develop a 'Michael Jackson’s Family Entertainment Park', in the Polish capital.

“My dream is to appeal to the child that lives in the heart of every man and woman on this planet and to create something in Poland that is so unique and so unusual that it cannot be experienced in any other place", he said
The letter mentioned no price, but Jackson’s business manager, Tarak Ben Ammar, said in an interview that estimates of Jackson’s contribution range between $100 million and $300 million--modest sums by Western theme park standards. Poland would add an unknown amount.

" I would also like to tell a great truth, I have traveled all over the world six times and have been everywhere, but nowhere I liked it more than in Poland. A visit to Poland is the fulfillment of my childhood dreams...."
He shops at the Kidiland toy store, reportedly in the amount of $670,000. He then goes to the children's hospital, with his arms loaded with gifts.

Next he takes a helicopter to Lubiaz, in order to see Cistercian Abbey of Lubiaz, wich he also planned to purchase. Accompanied by Professor Marek Kwiatkowski, who guided him during his visit, Michael spends 45 minutes marveling at the Baroque architecture and the relics. He'll even try a little "heehee" in the middle of the Hall des Princes to test the acoustics! Michael, who wanted to settle in Poland, already saw himself owning this old building, despite the millions of dollars in restoration to be expected.

In the evening, he flies to Bremen, Germany where in three days he will begin the 2nd leg of his HIStory Tour.

The plans to build the amusement park at a nearby military airport won approval from state officials in February 1998. Michael asks for sketches to be drawn up for the proposed theme parks, however, following the project’s approval and a huge hiatus, the army owning the airport does not agree to make it available for the park. Two grounds pointed out by the government will also be denied due to local protests. The Polish government abandons this project altogether and nothing will come out of it
2004 - Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville has ordered a trial-setting conference hearing today. Thomas Mesereau, Brian Oxman & Joe Jackson go to the courthouse; Michael's appearance isn't required. They argue for a reduction in his $3-million bail and seek an order to force prosecutors to move faster in sharing evidence.
In accusing the prosecution of moving too slowly in giving the defense access to the evidence, as required by law, Mesereau said Michael's right to a fair trial was “jeopardized by the undue delay of discovery.”
“The investigation of this case involves dozens of, if not over 100 witnesses, voluminous documents and expert examination on a variety of topics,” Jackson’s lawyers wrote. “The defense needs ample time to conduct follow-up witness interviews, locate and interview rebuttal witnesses and conduct its own forensic examinations, among other things.”
Prosecutors have responded that they have turned over vast amounts of evidence already and are processing the information they have as quickly as possible. They also are strongly resisting an attempt by Mesereau to substantially reduce Jackson’s bail on grounds that it is much higher than the bail for other defendants facing similar charges.
The bail-reduction request notes that Jackson has no prior record, arrests or convictions & that he has fully complied with all conditions of his release on bail, including attending court when ordered.
“Mr. Jackson’s ties to this community are substantial,” the defense motion states. “The record reveals that Mr. Jackson is not a flight risk or a danger to the community. It is also apparent that Mr. Jackson intends to confront and vigorously defend rather than evade the allegations in this case.”
Though Mesereau noted that Santa Barbara County’s bail schedule calls for bail of about $135,000 for the conspiracy and molestation charges in the grand jury complaint, prosecutors oppose the request on grounds that Jackson is a flight risk and that his wealth should be a factor in retaining high bail.
Melville said early in the proceedings that he hoped a trial could begin before the end of this year, but legal experts and many criminal lawyers predicted that would be impossible.
September 13 is set as the date for the trial to begin
On another legal front, Janet Arvizo filed a claim against county child protection officials accusing them of moving too slowly in investigating leaks to the media that were helpful to Jackson’s defense.
Before a psychiatrist who had examined Gavin told Santa Barbara County officials that the child had been molested, Welfare officials had interviewed the family after Living With Michael Jackson aired in early 2003
A memo written by authorities after Jackson’s arrest said the family had denied any sexual abuse. The memo was subsequently released on a website.
Attorney Larry R. Feldman, representing the Arvizos, said he filed the claim, a necessary step before a lawsuit, to force county officials to speedily conclude their investigation to ensure that such a breach of confidentiality “will never occur again to another innocent child.”
2006 - Michael visited a Tokyo orphanage and told a group of 140 excited children "I love you" in Japanese. Michael's van was swarmed by 100+ fans as he arrived. Inside the Seibi Gakuen children's home, he watched a performance of traditional music and dance by the children before speaking briefly on stage. He later shook hands and signed autographs for the children.

"I look forward to seeing old friends and saying hello to my huge fan base in Japan who, like my other fans around the world, have for so many years consistently shown their love and support to me and my family."- MJ
"Everyone couldn't believe such a big international star was visiting us," said Kiyoko Mito, headmistress of the Christian-run school. "The children only believed me after seeing the news yesterday that Michael Jackson was actually in Japan," she said

2013 - Jackson v AEG Trial Day 18
Katherine, Janet, Rebbie and Randy Jackson are in court. Only one of the siblings was allowed in the courtroom as they are potential witnesses. Janet accompanied Katherine during morning session while Rebbie was with her during the afternoon session.
Paul Gongaware Testimony
Jackson direct
Paul Gongaware is one of the defendants in the case. He's an adverse witness called by the plaintiffs. Gongaware is Co-CEO of Concerts West, part of AEG Live. Gongaware has toured with Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin and is currently on tour with The Rolling Stones. He worked for Jerry Weintraub in the 80s
He produced Prince's tour in 2004. He has not promoted/produced tours since. Gongaware has not talked to Prince after the tour
Gongaware was a CPA licensed in NY and Washington. He said he believes he's still licensed but hasn't checked status since there's no need
Gongaware testified that landing Jackson, whom he felt was the biggest artist of his era, was huge for AEG. In a 2008 email to AEG Live President and Chief Executive Randy Phillips, Gongaware described how the company should approach Jackson and his manager about a possible comeback tour:
We need to start at the fundamentals. How we do it. The difference between [Live Nation] and us is huge. We are artist-based, they are Wall Street-driven. We are smart people. We are completely honest and transparent with everything we do. That's how [founder] Phil [Anschutz] wants it
Gongaware said he worked on an Elvis Presley tour. Panish asked if Elvis died of drug overdose, and Gongaware said "Yes". Gongaware replied to a condolences' email on July 5, 2009:
I was working on the Elvis tour when he died, so I kind of knew what to expect. Still quite a shock

"So you knew what to expect when Michael Jackson passed away, is that right, sir?", Brian Panish asked.
"I kind of knew what was going to happen, yes",Gongaware answered.
Despite working as a tour promoter for 37 years -- including for Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and many others -- Gongaware testified that the only artist he ever knew that was using drugs on tour was Rick James
Panish asked about working for Jackson 5, Gongaware said had no interaction with Michael. Gongaware was a logistics manager on the Dangerous tour in 92-93. Panish said Michael made $100 million and donated it to charity. Gongaware said he didn't know
When Gongaware met Jackson was with Colonel Parker (Elvis' manager) in Las Vegas. Michael had wanted to meet the Colonel
Gongaware explained the difference between being tour manager and managing the tour. He talked about Michael's History tour

Panish: "You knew that Michael had been to rehab during the dangerous tour?"
Gongaware: "Yes, based on the statement he made after the tour"
Gongaware said he never knew MJ was involved with drugs until after the end of the Dangerous tour. Gongaware told LAPD he was aware of Jackson's previous use of pills/painkillers but did not want to get involved. Gongaware had known for years that Michael Jackson was taking painkillers but wasn't aware he was abusing them until MJ abruptly canceled his Dangerous world tour in the early 1990s to enter rehab. Gongaware said he knew of "two occasions" when Michael used painkillers between shows, but he claimed he didn't grasp the scope of the Michael's sickness until the taped 1993 announcement. "I would dispute knowing that he had a problem. I wasn't aware that there were problems", Gongaware said
Gongaware said he knew a doctor was medicating Jackson during the Dangerous tour but did not find out why the tour was eventually cut short. "Didn't have time,I was just dealing with what was in front of me", he said
Panish said Dr. Finkelstein testified under oath that Gongaware knew Michael had problems with painkillers before the Dangerous tour ended.
Panish: "Do you dispute that?" (Finkelstein testimony)
Gongaware: "I knew that he had pain"
Gongaware said Dr. Finkelstein is his doctor and friend and that they talk off and on, but he doesn't know specifics of the doctor's deposition. Dr. Finkelstein said he gave MJ painkillers after the concert in Bangkok following Michael's scalp surgery. In Gongaware's video deposition:
"Did you ever ask Dr. Finkelstein if he treated Michael during the Dangerous tour?"
"He wouldn't take about that stuff"
Another part of Gongaware's video depo: He said yes, he "occasionally treated Michael Jackson on the Dangerous tour"

Panish: "Were you always honest with Michael?"
Gongaware: "I believe I was"
Panish: "Did you throw around numbers to trick Michael Jackson?"
Gongaware: "I didn't try to trick Michael"
Panish elicited contradictory testimony asking over and over about Gongaware's memory, how long he spent with lawyers to discuss testimony.
On the Bad Tour MJ sold out 10 stadiums at 75,000 tickets per night.
Panish: "That's a pretty big number?"
Gongaware: "Huge"
Panish: "In 2 hours, how many tickets sold?"
Gongaware: "In initial presale we sold 31 shows"
Panish: "The fastest you had ever seen?"
Gongaware: "Yes"
"No one knows how many shows we can get with Mikey," said Gongaware. Panish asked about name "Mikey" - he said he used it occasionally
Email on 2/27/09 from Gongaware to Phillips:
We are holding all of the risk, if Michael won't approve it we go without his approval. We let Mikey know just what it will cost him in terms of him making money, and then we go with or without him in London. We cannot be forced into stopping this, which Michael will try to do because he is lazy and constantly changes his mind to fit his immediate wants.
Gongaware said his use "Mikey" was affectionate, not disparaging, and that the 'lazy' crack amounted to "poor choice of words" but one that accurately reflected how Michael "really didn't like to rehearse. He didn't like to do these kinds of things."
"People were aware at this point there would be a press conference. Michael wouldn't show up at the conference, it'd cost money," Gongaware said. "It wasn't much risk at all, we hadn't spent money," Gongaware said about that point of the tour. This was prior to news conference.
Gongaware said the situation in London, where they constantly referred to Michael as "Wacko Jacko" would impact marketability to sell tickets
"He doesn't want to do this kind of things, but it was important to show Michael to the world if he wanted to do a show," Gongaware explained
Jurors were shown several e-mails from Gongaware that Jackson lawyers suggested were evidence that AEG Live deliberately misled Jackson about how much money he would make from his comeback concerts and how many days he would have to rest between shows. Gongaware wrote to his boss, AEG Live President Randy Phillips, that they should present gross ticket sales numbers to Jackson, not the percentage of the net profits, during contract talks.
"Maybe gross is a better number to throw around if we use numbers with Mikey listening"
Panish talked about an email Gongaware sent to his secretary suggesting that she design a concert calendar for Jackson using light tan colors for show dates, while drawing attention to his rest days
Don't want the shows to stand out too much when Michael looks at it.Less contrast between work and off. Maybe off days in a contrasting soft color. Put 'OFF' in each off day after July 8, as well. Figure it out so it looks like he's not working so much.

Panish: "Did you want to change the color of the schedule to show Michael would not be working so hard?"
Gongaware: "Yes"
Panish: "Were you trying to fool him?"
Gongaware: "Nah, I wasn't trying to fool him, I wanted to present it in the best possible light"
Gongaware said it would be obvious when Michael would be working and not and he wasn't trying to trick him.
Email on 3/25/09 from Phillips to Gongaware:
"We need to pull the plug now. I will explain"

Panish: "Mr. Phillips wanted to pull the plug on the show, right sir?"
Gongaware: "I think he was referring to pull the plug on Karen Faye. We never talked about pulling the plug on the tour. Not that I recall"
"Kenny wanted the pull because the way she (Faye) handled situations," Gongaware explained. "She tried to control access to Michael and Kenny didn't like that"
Karen Faye expressed strong opinion that the tour as dangerous and impractical for MJ. Panish asked about a chain of emails where Gongaware said the pulling the plug refers to Ms. Faye. "I believe he was," Gongaware repeated.
In another March 25, 2009, email, Ortega wrote Gongaware that it was Faye's "strong opinion that this is dangerous and impractical with consideration to Michael's health and ability to perform.".
"I thought he was in good shape at the press conference, I was there," Gongaware said at the deposition. Gongaware was at O2 arena and Phillips was with Michael.
"Michael was late, Randy [Phillips] was saying I'm trying to get him going, I'm trying to get him going".
Panish: "Did Randy tell you MJ was drunk and despondent?"
Gongaware: "No, not drunk and despondent. Just said he was having hard time getting him going"
As to Dr. Conrad Murray, Gongaware said there was 1 rehearsal he said hello to him.
"It was basically a hello, on the floor at the Forum. Mikey asked me to retain him. I never hired him"
Panish played an interview of Phillips to SkyTV after Michael died:
"The guy is willing 2 leave his practice for large sum of money, so we hired him"
"I was told Michael wanted him as his doctor for the show," Gongaware said. Gongaware said Michael did not have any illness that he knew of.
Gongaware: "He had taken a physical, he passed the physical and from what I understand there was nothing wrong with him. Maybe some hay fever"
Panish: "Do you know what his blood test showed?"
Gongaware: "It showed it was good"
Gongaware said he received an email from Bob Taylor that everything was fine and that Michael had passed the physical. Gongaware said he never saw the results of the tests and doesn't know who saw them.
Panish showed video deposition of Gongaware and a declaration he signed about a month before giving the deposition. They contradict themselves. At first, Gongaware insisted he did no negotiating with Murray, but, confronted with emails and his previous testimony, he changed his position and said, "The only thing I did with Dr. Murray was negotiate a price." Gongaware said that neither he nor anyone at the AEG investigated Murray's background or credentials

Panish: "First you said how much did you want?"(to Dr. Murray)
Gongaware: "Yes"
Panish: "He said he wanted $5 million, right?"
Gongaware: "That's what he said. He said he had four clinics he would have to close, he would have to lay people off"
Gongaware said Dr. Murray had been Michael's personal doctor for the past 3 years. He said he did not know how many times MJ had seen the doctor. "Michael insisted on him, recommended him, and that was good enough for me, it was not for me to tell him who his doctor should be" Gongaware said
"The fact that he had been Michael Jackson's personal physician for three years was good enough for me," Gongaware said.
He said that Murray initially asked for $5 million to travel to London with Jackson and tend to him during the tour. "I just told him it wasn't going to happen," he said, recalling that Jackson then suggested offering him $150,000 a month. "Michael Jackson insisted on it and recommended him and it was not for me to tell him no," said Gongaware. "I wanted to provide what was necessary for him to do his job...He wanted a doctor and I wanted him to be healthy." Even after the offer of $150,000, Murray wasn't satisfied. "He started saying he wanted more and I said, 'The offer is coming directly from the artist," Gongaware said. Minutes later, he said Murray accepted.
"Did that seem desperate to you?" asked Panish.
"No," said Gongaware. "He just accepted Michael's offer."
"We agreed on what the compensation was going to be, but there were a lot of issues to be resolved," Gongaware said. Gongaware said he recalled meeting with Dr. Murray where he was told the doctor was going to take care of the medical licensing in London. Gongaware and Timm Wooley are longtime friends. They are currently working on The Rolling Stones tour. Gongaware said he negotiated the price for Dr. Murray, but didn't negotiate the contract. Gongaware explained that he didn't do the negotiation, he would normally refer that to Wooley.
Dr. Finkelstein and Gongaware have been friends for 35-plus years. Gongaware said he never offered Dr. Finkelstein the job of being MJ's doctor and said the doctor would be mistaken if he testified otherwise. Gongaware told the jury he called Dr. Finkelstein to ask what a fair price for a tour doctor would be. Doctor told him it was $10,000/week. As to Dr. Finkelstein wanting to be the tour doctor, Gongaware said he didn't recall specifically, but knew he wanted it."After his death we may have talked, but I don't recall specifics," Gongaware said. Gongaware said he sees Dr. Finkelstein a few times a year, but the subject of Michael never came up. Panish asked Gongaware if Dr. Finkelstein wanted to know if Michael was clean or using drugs. Gongaware said he didn't recall the conversation

Panish asked: "You could have told Dr. Murray at any time that his services were no longer needed, couldn't you?"
"No", Gongaware replied.
Panish: "You were involved in terminating one of the nannies who took care of Michael's kids?"
Gongaware: "Yes"
Gongaware told nanny, Grace Rwamba, that her services would not be needed anymore because AEG was cutting down on Michael's expenses
"I never read the contract, I was there when Michael signed it, but didn't see what was in it," Gongaware said, "Doctor Murray was 100% Michael's cost" Based on the contract, Gongaware said 95% of the production expenses were Michael's responsibility, 5% AEG.
Panish: "Who decided there was a need for a written contract with Dr. Murray?"
Gongaware: "I don't know"
Gongaware said that if the tour went forward, Dr. Murray would've made $1.5 million for 10 months. Ortega would've made almost that.
Gongaware said although AEG never did a background check on Murray, in his view they had "checked out" the doctor according to their standard practices. "When we check out someone, we either rely on if we know the person or if they're known in the industry or if they're recommended by the artist & in this case, Dr. Murray was recommended by the artist, in fact, the artist insisted"
Panish pressed Gongaware:
"You did nothing to verify anything about Dr. Murray, isn't that true, sir?"
Panish asked Gongaware if he approved budgets for April-July including Dr. Murray as production expense. He said he didn't know which budgets he approved. "It's my job to get that show on the road," Gongaware said.
Gongaware said he had to know how much the production had spent at any given time, but didn't have time to read the budget.
Panish: "Do you think you're good at your job, sir?"
Gongaware: "Yes"
Panish: "Very good?"
Gongaware: "I think so"
Gongaware testified that he didn't pay attention to the tour budgets that he approved, even though he was the tour manager.Paul Gongaware said he didn't read through the budgets, instead trusting that the tour accountant knew what he was talking about.
Gongaware testified that Dr. Murray's salary, although included in the company's budget for several months, wasn't something he saw as an actual payment that would be made. "If there's a potential for cost we put it in our budget so there are no surprises later", he said.
Gongaware often pleaded poor memory of events. He said he may have met with Jackson as many as 10 times, but could remember only two of the meetings and only one when Murray was present
Gongaware said he doesn't remember how many meetings he attended at Carolwood house. He didn't recall a meeting where a vase was broken. "There was a meeting where he signed the contract," Gongaware recalled, saying there were more but he doesn't remember specifics. At the meeting in early June, Gongaware said he was present along with Kenny, Randy, Frank DiLeo, Dr. Murray and Michael. "The meeting was about making sure Michael and Dr. Murray had everything they needed to care for Michael," Gongaware explained.
"Yes, we did talk about health-related issues. It was more a general meeting about what Dr. Murray would need", Gongaware said. He had told the police the topic of the meeting was Jackson's overall health ( i.e., diet, stamina and his weight)
He remembered that Jackson arrived late from a doctor's appointment and had slurred speech. Gongaware said Michael Jackson "was a bit off". "He was just coming back from visiting Dr. Klein. I believe he was under the influence of something. That was the only time I saw him like that", Gongaware said.
Jackson had missed a rehearsal and was thought to be dancing at home. However they discovered he was only watching video. Doctor Murray was receptive to their concerns and indicated he would take care of the situation

I HAD JUST ESTABLISHED A FOUNDATION BACK THEN, EARLY IN THE MORNING ONE DAY, I WAS ORDERED BY MY MASTER TO GO DOWN THE MOUNTAIN AND PRACTICE. SOON AFTER DEPARTING, I MET A DEMONESS TIGER SPIRIT WITH 4 HIGHER REALMS WITHIN THE NASCENT SOUL STAGE. I FELT THAT DOING BATTLE WITH THIS FORMIDABLE FOE WOULD GREATLY HELP MY CULTIVATION. AFTER ALL, PURE UNBOUNDED YANG WAS UNIQUE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, I HAD TO RELY ON MY YOUTHFUL VIGOR TO PUT UP A STRUGGLE. AND BARELY ENOLIGH, I MANAGED TO SLAUGHTER HER. UNEXPECTEDLY RIGHT THEN, A DEMON TIGER SPIRIT WITH A THOUSAND YEAR OLD CULTIVATION BASE HAD ARRIVED WHEN THE KILLING WAS DONE. ONLY THEN DID I REALIZE THAT THESE 2 TIGER DEMON SPIRITS WERE CLOSE PARTNERS. THERE WAS NO ESCAPE, SO I HAD TO GIVE IT MY ALL. TO MY SURPRISE HOWEVER, THIS THOUSAND YEAR OLD MALE TIGER HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN IN A FIGHT WITH AN IMMORTAL CULTIVATOR AND WAS SERIOLISLY INJURED. IT HAD SENSED THAT THE DEMONESS TIGER HAD BEEN KILLED BY ME AND DESPERATELY TRIED TO AVENGE HER. I ENTERED A STATE OF PANIC, DURING WHICH A TALISMAN SWORD DIRECTLY STRUCK ITS MOST VULNERABLE SPOT. NEW WOUNDS GAVE POWER TO OLD WOUNDS, AND ALTOGETHER, THE THOUSAND YEAR OLD TIGER HAD DIED, I EXTRACTED THE INTERNAL ALCHEMY OF THE 2 DEMON TIGER SPIRITS, AND TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEIZE THE MALE TIGER'S LAIR. IN ADDITION TO TREASURES APLENTY, I HAD DISCOVERED AN ELDER TRAPPED IN THE LAIR, WHO WAS NONE OTHER THAN THE IMMORTAL CULTIVATOR WHO HAD FOUGHT THE MALE TIGER BEFORE. ALTHOLIGH HE HAD INJURED THE DEMON TIGER, HIS IMMORTAL YIN AND YANG WERE IN DISARRAY, HIS NASCENT SOUL WAS RUINED AND WANiNG, AND HIS BODY WAS ON THE VERGE OF DESTRUCTION DOWN TO HIS LIMBS. IF I HADN'T ACCIDENTALLY FOUND AND RESCUED HIM, HE WOULD'VE BEEN DECIMATED BY THE TIGER AND DIED WITHOUT DIGNITY. THE ELDER KNEW HE WOULDN'T LIVE FOR LONG, SO HE PASSED HIS REMAINING CULTIVATION BASE DOWN TO ME, AND FROM THAT POINT, DISSOLVED. SO BY NIGHT, I RETURNED TO THE MOLINTAIN FOR DINNER, ALREADY BEING IN THE NASCENT SOUL STAGE!

2023.05.28 12:22 EmileWolf Two amazing career options and I can't choose - what would you do in my situation?

Hi Reddit [warning, it's a bit long],
I (24F, European) am currently finding myself at the crossroads of two amazing options for a PhD. I feel like they both have something else to offer, and they both seem to be a great option for advancing my career.
I'm a Master's student in behavioural ecology (animal behaviour). Ever since doing my Bachelor's degree, I wanted to do a graduate degree at Kyoto University, Japan, since they really revolutionised the study of animal behaviour, and a lot of famous research is from there. Well, my dream came true as I have been awarded the MEXT scholarship, which is a full-ride scholarship to complete a PhD in Japan, paid by the government. So what's the problem, you say?
This year I've spend a few months abroad doing fieldwork for my research project, and it really changed my view on life. While we were there, my colleague heard that her grandfather was terminal. I am very very close to my own grandparents, and it hit me that my grandfather's health is ailing too. There's a huge possibility that he passes away while I'm in Japan, and I really struggle with this. Additionally, I realised that theoretical/fundamental research doesn't really suit my tastes, and I'd rather do something more practical - like aiding in conservation. On top of that, none of my family members really wants me to go to Japan.
There comes the other option. I recently found a vacancy in Germany to do behavioural research on wild wolves for conservation purposes. So now I'm very conflicted since both options have amazing things to offer. I made a list of pros and cons, but it isn't getting me very far (and my dad is pushing me to go to Germany - because it will give him a nice 'holiday spot').
Pros Japan:
Cons Japan:
Pros Germany:
Cons Germany:
Language will not be a problem as I speak both German and Japanese, and I'm working to improve in both languages. I know that a big part of my doubt stems from my family - they all want me to go to Germany and I do feel like family is more important than my career. My cats are a big problem, but that's more of a mental hurdle. I'm just so conflicted, ahhh. What would you do?

2023.05.28 12:12 DistributionHot329 Missing an Ex

I broke up with my Ex in January. She was the love of my life. We blended together perfectly. Our intimacy on a physical and emotionally was unmatched. She felt like my other half and someone I dearly loved. I broke up with her because at the end of the day I knew I wasn’t going to marry her. There was some outside forces driving a wedge between us. For one I despised her family. Thought they left a negative/corrosive thumbprint on her and they were constantly in our lives which impacted us. 90% of my ex was everything I could of dreamed but that 10% made me question myself so I decided not to compromise my values/principles I believe and broke up with her. I miss her so incredibly much everyday and understand it was my decision to burn that bridge just reflect on her often and start to tear up because no one has ever made me smile like she did and I’m not the dating type. I don’t do one night stands and have no interest in other women for the passes 5 months or so. How do I get passed missing her so much? Deep down I never wanted to end things but I felt I came to a point the relationship was making me compromise myself so I put myself first and don’t regret it just am sad at genuine love ending. Any advice?

2023.05.28 11:37 newyearnewaccnewme I'm working under a sr. programmer who's not present and incompetent. I feel so lost and need some advice on how I can grow my skillset.

TLDR: Sr is lacking technical skills & is not present with us. We only talk in meeting once a week. Environment is tough. What should I do to improve my skillset & career growth?
I'm a junior web dev working at a BPO company providing customer support service. Currently 10 months in and this august will mark my first year as a web dev professionally.
For context, our IT team has 4 people. 1 senior dev, 1 technical support, & 2 juniors. Currently, the senior is working remotely overseas & only work with this company one day in a week. The reason why it led to this is because he's the golden boy of our Managing Director and when the Sr. decided to move out of the country, the MD refused to let him go and chose to pay him his normal salary but in return he will work for the company once a week. As for the technical support, he recently resigned but instead of hiring a new one, our MD passes of his work to both of us that's left in the team. His work alone would take me up to 2 hours or more a day.
I'll try to be as brief as I can but below are the explanations of my current situation & dissatisfaction.
  1. Sr. Absence:
    1. Bad communications. There's this one time when I need to build an API endpoint for a form, the Sr. first agreed with my approach before I started working on it but once I'm finished, he said that he does not want it to be that way. So I had to start all over again. To give you an example of how bad our communications are, a simple text on Whatsapp asking for clarification would take him up to a week to get a reply. And that's if you even get one.
    2. There's no documentations on the web app that I'm working on that was originally built by him. Since the app was poorly designed & built, changing things is already hard. Top it off with his absence & no documentation, I'm amazed that I was able to even understand the codebase.
    3. Zero guidance / mentoring. I am a self-taught web dev with no degree & this is my first job so I would love to have some mentoring on all things, not just technical things. But again, there's none. Although I probably don't want his advice when it comes to technical stuff ( I will clarify more below ), getting some mentoring on the culture & workflow would be nice. As for now, I merely depended on my co-workers to pickup the company culture & domain knowledge.
  2. Sr. Incompetence:
    1. His database design skill is a joke. No normalization. No indexes. And all the columns' datatypes are varchar, even for dates & numbers. To this day, I would actually be surprised if there's a table in our db that actually has a proper data type XD. To top it off, he doesn't use null but empty strings and this has caused me some trouble one time. Last but not least, he doesn't know how to do proper queries with sql. For instance, instead of using joins he would first fetch all the records he needs then loop each record to get the extra details on another table. Classic N+1. Another example would be where he would use loops to aggregate data instead of using sql aggregations. In our web app, there's this one page that is used by our sales team and it would take up to 25 seconds to load. I spent two weeks fixing the database, change his queries but even then I was only able to reduce the load time up to 10 seconds which is still shit. I decided not to make any more changes just because of the time constraint & not wanting to break anything.
    2. His frontend skills are also a joke. There's no bundler to bundle your static files. Instead of customizing bootstrap with Sass, he just overwrites them with a class & the !important flag. A lot of them to the point trying to write bootstrap in codebase is a pain in the ass. A huge JS file that is only used in certain pages and he puts them in the footer component. There's at least like 100 variables in that file with shitty names & you would have no idea what they are doing unless you are willing to spend days trying to figure it out. No package managers to handle dependencies. In the footer component alone, there's at least 3 bootstrap.js file being pulled from different places.
    3. No version control. No CICD pipeline. To be more precise, previously he would literally change the source code directly on the server ( windows server with IIS ) with notepad++. There's so many duplicates like header1, header2, headerOld, etc etc. But when I joined I immediately raised this issue saying that it will be hard for me to do my work like this. So I told the Sr. to create a git repo & teach the other Jr. how to use git. Since then, I would do my work on my machine, push it to git then pull it manually to the server.
    4. His server management skill is also a joke. Right now in the server I am working on has three other web app. Since they all live in the same server, he just made them listen on different ports & asked our staff to use the specific url with the port number behind it instead of using a reverse proxy. This isn't really a huge problem but it still irritates me because a lot of times our staff would come to me asking why they can't access the website because they had the ports wrong. These little things add up quickly.
    5. UI Design. This is a little bit niche but I received alot of complaints regarding it. He would make four different pages where each page will be responsible for the basic CRUD operations. Navigation is hard because he basically just lumps every pages on the sidebar. Ever since I took over, I've changed the approach where you would have a single page and if you would like to add something, I will just bring up a modal with forms in it. Kind of like SPA but not a full blown SPA written in react or anything. For the state management, I just wrote a DataTable wrapper to handle the state for me where I could crud something without doing a full page reload. Ever since I changed the approach, our staff are now asking that all other parts of the web app to be in similar fashion & it is almost impossible for me to do it with the current codebase & I kind of regretted changing the style LMAO.
    6. His basic knowledge of security, mainly things like authentication, authorization & validation is lacking. In our web app, there's no authorization done. So if you are just a basic user but you know the URL to some parts of the web app that you weren't supposed to see, you can open them. He just hides the links on the sidebar. But no authorization done on the backend. Same goes to validation. Like I said, he didn't even normalize the database, so on things like a dropdown, if you change the value with inspect element the data will actually be saved without any errors whatsoever.
    7. Last but not least, his way of building things is just flawed. For instance, there's a web app that was built by him and currently being maintained by the other junior & himself. In the web app, there's a file input where the user can upload an image & the requirements is that the image must be shown underneath the input before the user submits the form. Instead of using a simple vanilla JS to do it, he first creates an entry in the database for that form with empty details on page load. Once the user select an image, he uploads the images behind the scenes to the server and set the image src once it is uploaded. But if the user decided to not submit the form, it will not remove the uploaded image & and the empty form entry. One of the major complains I heard from the junior is when he needs to pull reports for the management. For instance if he wants to know how many people have submitted the form, he will have to fetch all the form entries, look at the uploaded path for each form entry & make sure it is not empty.
  3. Work Environment:
    1. Right now I am basically doing 1.5 job since my boss refused to replace the vacant technical support for the next three months.
    2. No proper dev environments. If the operations want something, they will email me saying they want this & that, and I should get it done. No agile, no testing, no bug tracker. The only bug tracker we have is our internal staff when they ran into problems XD.
    3. The preference of our boss towards the Sr.. For instance, the web app that I'm working on is super slow ( due to the problems I described above ) but when I try to explain to my boss that it was because of how it was developed initially by the Sr. he just brushes me off & says "There's no way it is because of that. You don't know what you are talking about. It is now your responsibility so you should go and fix it". Like I said, just to improve the single page for my sales team alone took almost two weeks, so trying to fix everything isn't feasible unless I am able to stop request from all of the staff for several months where I will rewrite the whole thing from scratch. From what I heard from other staff, back when the Sr. was here in the office he would told them that performance is slow due to lack of db storage & server's ram. I can assure you it is not LMAO.
    4. Sr. refusing to listen to our inputs. For instance, there's this one time where we have one single form that could have at least 12 different 'types'. Each type will contain multiple different fields ( a total of 32 distinct field ) so I decided to store the details for each type in a single JSON column. This way, validation & storing the data is easy. Even trying to query based on the value inside the JSON is easy with MySQL. But he outright rejects me with NO reason ( I asked him to explain why it's not suitable and he couldn't say anything ) and says that each field will need their own column. After two weeks of arguing, he finally concedes and asked me to continue LOL.
My question is basically how can I navigate in this kind of situation so that my development & growth is not stunted. Should I get a new job? If so how soon? Currently I spent time outside of work learning on my own & trying to build a portfolio. In my country it's pretty hard to get a dev job without a degree.

2023.05.28 10:45 Proletlariet Xena - Main Body

Xena of Amphipolis, the Warrior Princess, Destroyer of Nations, Slayer of Gods

"It's not easy proving you're a different person"
Opening
Bio: Xena was a simple farm girl living in the town of Amphipolis when the warlord Cortese invaded. Rallying the townsfolk, Xena led her people to victory against the warlord, at the cost of her brother's life. With her heart hardened by her loss, Xena began to conquer neighboring towns to serve as buffers around Amphipolis for the next warlord. Soon, her desire to protect her town twisted into an endless hunger to conquer, leading her to become a worshiper of Ares & a brutal, ruthless warlord. She continued on this path, making many friends & enemies, until she met her defeat at the hands of Hercules, who taught her that even she can atone for her sins by going out into the world & doing good. Now on the road to redemption, Xena travels the world with her friend & lover Gabrielle, righting the wrongs committed by her & others.
Fighting Style: When she was a warlord, Xena would go for the kill straight away by any means necessary, typically via a chakram throw or pressure points. Post-Reformation, Xena will generally open with a chakram throw to disarm a foe or hit their projectile out of the air, & from there will go for non-lethal options like close-range disarming, pressure points, or a simple punch to the face. However, Xena will not hesitate to kill an opponent if they refuse to accept defeat or if they pose a threat to her or those she cares about. When the Olympians threatened her daughter, she embarked on a quest to slaughter them all, which she succeeded in doing.
Feats are tagged with the source. Some albums will not have tags, because the scans within occur from different sources & will have the source in the album itself.

2023.05.28 10:39 Proletlariet Arthur Extended Cast

Respect Pretty Much the Entire Extended Cast of Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword!

The gang's all here and then some. Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a modernized retelling of classic Arthurian legend. It deviates in some ways from the source material, like adding in a character named Kung Fu George, having Vortigern be a wizard building an evil tower and enslaving little boys, and generally being really hard to follow due to weird editing.
This thread covers pretty much the entire extended cast of the movie. Arthur and Vortigern get their own threads.

Back Lack

An archer with a son named Blue Boy. Childhood friend of Wetstick and Arthur. Ends up getting killed by Vortigern.

Mordred and the Elephants

Daniel LaRusso

"So, karate's fighting. You train to fight"
"That what you think?"
"...No"
"Then why train?"
"So I won't have to fight"
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1966, Daniel LaRusso lived there until his mother moved the two out to Reseda, California in 1984. Upon arriving in Reseda, Daniel made quick foes with the Cobra Kai karate dojo, especially top student Johnny Lawrence and sensei John Kreese. While taking a beating from the Cobra Kais after a school dance, Daniel was saved by Mr. Miyagi, the handyman at his apartment complex. Daniel was taught karate by Mr. Miyagi, entering a lifelong friendship with the man. After winning the All-Valley Karate Tournament two years in a row, Daniel went on to marry a woman named Amanda, have two kids, and open a car dealership. When Johnny reopened the Cobra Kai dojo, Daniel opened the Miyagi-Do karate dojo in order to train new students.

2023.05.28 10:24 ThrowAwayExScn Dealing with multiple crisis at the same time... Looking for advice.

I wanted to start this post with a trigger warning. This will include the subjects of self harm, suicidal ideations, loss of a family member, cheating spouse and divorce.
For context, I am a mid 30s male, living in Florida. I am now twice divorced and was raised in Scientology but am no longer involved. A few years back I left, and only recently have I decided to no longer practice at all. To those that are familiar their excommunication policy would have me lose contact with everyone I have ever known so I am still friendly with the community but not practicing. I have lost much of my self identity over the last few years due to this. Let's call this crisis #1.
In October, my father was on his deathbed. The week that he took a turn for the worst, my newly wed wife who I had been with for 5 years and married for only 6 months at the time cheated on me with a close friend. For context we had a one sided open relationship with strict boundaries. We had practiced this for 2 years and never had problems until now. I will not go into the details of the traumatic experience the cheating was but it was one of the worst moments of my life topped only by January which I will get into in a moment.
After she cheated on me, I had to immediately fly out to see my dad before he passed. I spent a weekend with him and my brother and his partner, and when I got back, he passed days later.
My wife did not even realize it was cheating. She said it was a grey area due to the open relationship, when I told her that emotional cheating and breaking the boundaries of our open relationship still counted as cheating, she responded by taking a razor and cutting her arm open. I then had to bottle up my own feelings, and declined into panic attacks and massive anxiety 24/7. I was waking from nightmares each night, and she came to me daily complaining and trying to get my support on her limerence for the other man. I told her plainly that I could not help her with those feelings as they were causing me mental anguish and that when I had recovered from this I would be able to talk to her about only that issue.
We worked on us for the months of Nov and part of Dec. At which point she started to convince me to be friends with the other man again. She knew I was a very forgiving person, and I could not really pressure her since the self harm. She promised me "you and me together forever no matter what" and after a couple weeks of these discussions I caved.
She proceeded to cheat with me again early January. She then "cut him out" "he is a child" etc etc and we spent what seemed like to me 3 weeks of healthy relationship and making progress. I fought through the panic attacks and they were improving, I thought we would make it though.
During this time, unbeknownst to me, she had gotten an apartment behind my back, we went on a date 2 days before she left, everything seemed to be going well. She convinced me to assist her in getting a new car. And the next day she kissed me goodbye as I went to work and when I came home the dog was gone her computer was gone and all she could say was "I am sorry".

I had 3 weeks of mental breakdowns, no ability to sleep or eat much of anything, I was pacing 10s of thousands of steps a day. At this point my brother convinced me to go to a medical rehab due to how much weed I was smoking, it was more for the suicidal ideations and the panic attacks to have a safe space to recover.
At this point I was gaslit to my friends, telling them that the open relationship was what caused the problems, no mention of her infidelity, and that she wasn't leaving me for the other man, she blamed my mental health (that stemmed from her cheating) and convinced my friends that I was bipolar (I am not). Within 1 week of her leaving she was publicly dating the other man and our friends confronted her on it at which point she immediately burned bridges with everyone she had ever known outside her family, the new boyfriend, and a couple friends from college that I didnt really know.
So I lost my sense of self, my spiritual beliefs, my father passed, I lost my high paying job, and my wife cheated on me not once but twice, I am now $10,000 in debt, and am arguing on another $10,000 of medical bills from my old insurance. I can not afford therapy at the moment. However I was able to get onto anti anxiety medications that have helped to a huge extent with the spiraling thoughts and panic attacks, however I am still depressed underneath it all, and am struggling to make connections with people. It has been 5 months now, and I feel that outside the meds there has been near zero improvement.
Things I have tried outside the medication include fixing my sleep schedule by getting off screens early, going for an hour walk and then winding down with a book an hour before bed. I have tried eating healthier but honestly my depression is making it hard to go shopping, hard to cook food, hard to get in the gym, and hard to maintain a routine. I have tried various natural vitamins / supplements for sleep and for anxiety but those did not do much good. I have tried reaching out to friends for support but 90% of them lack empathy or any sort of understanding, leaving me with only 1-2 friends who I can really get any productive conversation out of. I have been educating myself on mental health through Dr. K and other sources online and have tried meditation, however I am certain I have undiagnosed ADHD, and add on the depression and trauma and it has made consistently doing anything like meditation for more than a minute or two really difficult for me. I have developed major body dysmorphia due to gaining weight and then being left for someone I consider much more good looking than I. My self esteem is at a zero and outside of my job I feel utterly worthless.
At this point I have been gaming excessively, smoking weed 2-3 times a week when I really am unable to get out of my head, over eating due to the weed, and have found it impossible to initiate social interactions with friends or get out to meet new people so I end up discouraged and shut in. This is so against my nature as I am historically a huge extrovert and obsessive compulsive talker. I used to be able to go out to the bar and make a new friend every single time, and no one in the room would forget me.

I was fortunate enough to quickly obtain a new job, and am moving into a new position soon which will theoretically allow me to recover from my debts and save for a future, whatever that looks like. Multi 6 figures potential.
At my age, with the things I want or thought I wanted in my life, such as kids, a house, a healthy relationship, going back to get a college degree, all the normal things that an average person wants, I feel that it is now completely unobtainable. I only recently discovered that I have a 50% chance of inheriting the genetic problem that my father had and that would have me starting to develop his condition as early as my late 50s which gives me just over 20 years to achieve my goals, including raising kids to adulthood, and I wont be able to procreate if I have this as I do not want to pass it on to my children. Adoption is really my only option if that is the case which will further limit who I can find a partner in. I cant afford to get the genetic test at this time, and feel I can not even have goals without knowing.
I am seriously afraid at this point that I will be unable to achieve my goals, that this trauma is going to have such a permanent impact on my life that I am not going to be able to become the carefree extroverted self that I am that allowed me to meet the person of my dreams. I have an incredibly toxic underlying value in that I am unable to be happy if my partner is not happy, and especially if I have no partner, anything and everything feels empty. I have been in a relationship for 17 of the last 19 years and being alone is my biggest fear in life. I can not imagine a more traumatic ending to what I considered an otherwise perfect relationship that was almost entirely argument free and full of love.
I honestly believe that the only thing that could possibly help is seriously intensive therapy and moving to a new state to get out of this area that constantly reminds me of the life I had only half a year ago, but I am going to have to work this new job for a few years before I can even consider that.
So if you made it this far, my question is, without the ability to afford therapy in the present, what can I do to cope with this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ukrainian official acknowledges attacks on Crimean Bridge, Russian Navy
The head of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), Vasily Malyuk, has acknowledged that Ukraine targeted the Crimean Bridge in an effort to disrupt Russian logistics. Malyuk stated that "certain measures were taken" in accordance with international law and the customs of warfare. He declined to provide further details. The explosion on the bridge caused casualties, including lives of several people, and partial damage, leading to decreased traffic capacity.

Russian authorities repaired the damage and reopened the lanes for cars and trains. As reported by Russia, Moscow responded to the bridge bombing by intensifying missile attacks on Ukrainian energy and military infrastructure.

2023.05.28 09:39 INS_Fang My family and I are treated as outsiders by our extended family

I come from a latin American background, and that means that my extended family is really close, except for my family which they basically classified as outsiders. Parties, gatherings, usual family things, we’re almost always never invited.
Part of me knows I shouldn’t care, and just move on, but it hurts whenever I see pictures of my extended family together. A few months ago I started chatting with my first cousin on WhatsApp for the first time in a long time. The reason we’ve haven’t talked in a very long time is that we live in different countries. Anyway, she responded literally once every three weeks, and always apologized, saying she was really busy and didn’t see the message, and that she doesn’t use whatsapp. I told her no to worry about it, as I wanted to mend that bridge between us. However, a few weeks ago I saw my grandma messaging her on the same app, and she told me that my cousin always answers her right away. Other cousins also told me that she’s very active on the app with them. This absolutely gutted me, because I realize that my cousin was just giving me excuses, and was simply just ignoring me. I know I did nothing wrong but it made me feel horrible, losing a friend is one thing, but your cousin? Much less your first cousin? I just felt so betrayed, and it made me realize that it’s not just her but everyone in my extended family, and it’s not just towards me but my parents and brothers also. It’s just like we don’t exist, or just a passing thought to them. It’s even sadder because I know my parents are also feeling the alienation, and it hurts them whenever they post something and get almost no response from anyone. There’s also the fact that we’re the least well off out of most of our extended family, with some members having basically mansions. We struggle a lot, and I know our extended family look down on us for that.
Honestly, I don’t know what to do. A part of me doesn’t want to burn that bridge, knowing I’ll always regret it. But at the same time how can I get closer to my extended family if they won’t give me the chance? Not to mention they look down on me and my family? Is it even worth it? What would you guys do in my situation?

2023.05.28 09:37 Noghbuddy The Spirit of...

I ran into a bit of writer's block writing the next part of Secret Chord. It wasn't helped by this weird anthology rattling around in my head. So, I decided to write it down to get it out of the way. I hope you enjoy it, or even take it as a series of possible writing prompts. I only had more ideas about the bootlegger of the story, so we'll just say everyone else is up to interpretation and imagination. Let me know what you think.
And yes, I do have a strong fascination with music. Why do you ask?
---------
Radio is a beautiful thing to Jack Rushing. The ability to reach the common man wherever he may be and bring to him the comfort and pleasure of music, the up-to-date latest news of the wider galaxy, or the simple human connection of Jack’s interludes. Now it wasn’t radio exactly, but the semantics were unimportant. What was important was broadcasting out to the galaxy at large wherever humans may be. To bring together those lonely souls adrift in the wider-
A crash brought Jack out of his reverie. His short fik assistant dropped a box after tripping over a wire. “Careful with those! We haven’t saved those yet!”
“Yes, yes! Sorry.”
Pinching the bridge of his nose Jack replied, “It’s fine. You’re doing fine, Kos. Just watch where you’re going. Now bring those here, we’re about to go live.”
Kos recovered the spilled cardboard sleeves and deposited the box on the small table beside Jack. He stood and thumbed through the selection. This box alone could buy a new cargo hauler, and the cramped studio held crates of these black-market treasures. Kindly donated by a mysterious benefactor.
He drew out a couple records and a tape then handed them to Kos. “Alright we’re gonna start with ‘Sixteen Tons” he said pointing to each song number, “Then ‘Pride and Joy’, ‘Midnight Rider’, ‘East Bound and Down’ and we’ll end with…” He dug around and exclaimed, “Ooh, this.” He handed the vinyl to the fik trying to juggle everything who shuffled into the next room. Jack could see through the glass as Kos began to set everything up, while he put on his headphones and adjusted the mic. The per-recorded program from the night cycle was ending.
With a thumbs up from Kos, Jack punched a few buttons on his console before the vintage “On Air” light blinked to life.
“Good morning, O’ wayward souls, I’m Jack Rushing back again with another slew of songs once thought lost to time. Our generous benefactor, Mr. Suit-and-Tie, continues to comb the seedy underbelly of the galaxy at large to bring you nothin but the best. Meanwhile, me and Kos, my stalwart companion, are broadcasting live from beautiful downtown Nondescript. This is the Spirit of Radio bringing you ‘Sixteen Tons’ by Tennessee Ernie Ford.” Jack pointed through the glass to signal Kos to start before muting the mic.

Cooking was an art as much as a skill. Bo had cooking in his blood. History was repeating itself, as Bo’s ancestors worked as a ship’s cook to gain passage across the Atlantic, so too did Bo book passage across the sea of stars by working as the ship’s chef.
Some people say a man is made out of mud, A poor man’s made out of muscle and blood…
Bo adjusted the volume on his pad so he could hear it as he worked. He was finishing up cleaning after the ship’s dinner and moved on to his special project. He promised Mephla a specially made dinner for two. The felinoid had taken an interest in his cooking. She enjoyed watching him cook as much as eating what he made. He knew she’d arrive any minute, so he set out on some prep work.
Finding ingredients was a novel challenge, but not impossible. A passable replacement was possible with just about anything, but it took Bo the better part of a year and half seeking them out. Salt was salt, thank God, but others he had to be a bit more creative. It seemed the galaxy preferred lard to butter. Probably due to the ursdains or the mostly carnivorous population, but he could work with it. He was most proud of his most recent discovery of a little root-bulb that mimicked garlic damn near perfectly. He’d been jonesing for garlic-bread for years now, and now he could finally scratch that itch.
He began setting up his mies en place and pre-heating his oven and prized possession. Well, one of them anyway. His father always said all he needed in the kitchen was a chef’s knife and a cast-iron skillet. Turns out he was right. Those two have taken Bo from one side of the galaxy to the other. The damn electric stove-tops still irked him, but he could manage.
Just as he was finishing up breaking down the…bird of some description, The calico felinoid entered and leaned against the doorway. She didn’t say anything, just watched with a self-satisfied smile. Or maybe that was just how her face always looked. God, he loved that face.
Bo was particularly proud of the little mound of pasta he’d created. It was too labor intensive to serve the crew at large, but he’d made a little batch just for tonight. Maybe one day he’d be the one to introduce dried pasta to the galaxy, but for tonight it was a special treat for a special woman.
*****
Curiosity is what drew Mephla to the diminutive human. She saw him duck into the kitchens of the ship one day and had to know what he could possibly know about food. Peeking in reviled a pleasant scene of a craftsman in his element. The way he felt or smelled each ingredient before staring off into space or closing his eyes. He once told her he could picture how a dish would taste just from the smells of the ingredients. Of course, this didn’t stop him from sneaking tastes of each step while he worked.
Yeah I love my lady, She’s long and lean, You mess with her, You’ll see a man get mean.
She loved to watch him work; from cutting and slicing veggies, herbs, and meat to how he juggled different pots and pans to combine, split up, then recombine the food in some ritual of flavor. One of his favorite phrases was “Don’t waste flavor.” Whatever that meant, it worked. He busied himself with roasting what he called “the star of the dish” while simultaneously preparing the “landing spot” of the plate.
He began slicing the fowl and placing it over some sauce covered…something. She’d eaten enough of his food to trust him. Humans (at least this one) enjoyed meaty, fatty flavors. This suited Mephla just fine.
“Oh. Almost forgot. How could I forget?” He turned and retrieved some buttered-bread concoction and placed two on each plate. It smelled divine. She entered his temple and stood behind him, holding him tight from behind.
Nuzzling the top of his head she said, “You keep cooking like this I’ll end up as big as an ursdain.”
She’s my sweet little thang, I’m her little lover boy.

Freedom was a dangerous business. Bill Elliott stared at the representation of the guard cutter currently scanning and searching every ship passing through this jump point. Not normally a problem. Not unless you happen to be haulin’ a couple tons of human contraband bound for less-than-legal ports. The next system over had the hyperspace lane entrance that’d set Bill home-free.
But I’m not gon’ let ‘em catch me, no I’m not gon’ let ‘em catch the Midnight Rider.
“I’m tryin’ buddy. I really am.” He grumbled at his radio. He adjusted the number nine cap on his head then climbed out of his seat. His rig was a supped-up cheap cargo hauler. It’d fit in just about anywhere in the galaxy, but it was packing a drive big enough to rival…well a guard cutter.
He clambered to the cargo hold to take another count of what he had. Most of the crates and pallets were labeled in code. It’d be just about the worst code one could come up with for fooling humans, but luckily the Galactic Community didn’t seem to recognize names like Marlboro or Jack Daniels. Bill’s world as a bootlegger was made of these not-so-subtle code names, including his own name.
Finishing taking stock, including the smaller cases labeled “Colt” under the floor panels, he checked on the hulking drive core awkwardly crammed in the engine bay and bleeding out into the cargo and extra crew bays. With no epiphany found Bill walked back to the cockpit and fell back in his seat.
His options were limited. He could turn around and make a few extra jumps and extend his delivery by who knows how long. Which would also be suspicious as all Hell trying to avoid a GC cutter. Or he could gamble and pass through the checkpoint, hoping beyond hope they don’t decide to pick his ship apart bolt by bolt.
East bound and down, loaded up and truckin’, We’re gonna do what they say can’t be done.
Bill chuckled, “Yeah. Let’s watch this ol’ Bandit run.” He waited for the last ship in line to jump out of system before warming up his drive. This is what the burner tags were for after all. He got the green light then put the hammer down.

Enterprise is the lifeblood of any organization or business. Rohan Singh thought of himself as quite the enterprising human. As humanity was cast to the four winds, Rohan wept for the lost spirit and culture, and would do anything and everything he could to seize back control of humanity’s spirit.
Rohan eased back in his chair, propping his feet up on his desk. He pulled a cigar out of his coat pocket and lit it. The Galactic Community was no stranger to financial wheeling and dealing, however the human had a couple perks to leverage. First was a fresh perspective. A stagnate market was one just begging for any flashy new enterprise. Which led to the second: adaptability. So rote was supply and demand that any upset could cripple an unsuspecting business. And upset he did. With an army of felinoid lawyers and ssypno investors Rohan quickly build company after company within shell company after shell company.
It started simply with human-made chachkies and knick-knacks sold for inflated prices, but quickly built capital for larger ventures in ship flipping and Rohan’s favorite: casinos. There is no better cash cow than the scientifically perfected art of mass gambling. With a large influx of cash, he had the freedom to invest in…less reputable opportunities. Tobacco, alcohol, and guns sold the galaxy over. Keeping his plantations and stills secret was an ever-present challenge, but one that paid dividends. Guns on the other hand were a harder business to stay in. Oh sure, human “slug throwers” were quickly becoming popular. The demand was there, but Rohan couldn’t keep a steady supply. It seems most of the humans with the know-how simply went into business for themselves. Rohan could respect that, but he’d need one with loose scruples on the payroll. Then was the matter of drugs. How did human drugs react to alien physiology? That could open a whole new-
This next song goes out to Mr. Suit-and-Tie.
Money Money Money Money… Money!
Rohan grinned. Sure, his wealth was reward enough, but there was still his goal of humanity’s spirit. He rose and was about to key his intercom when it buzzed to life.
“Sir, the Spirit of Fortune is pulling in, and Mr. Liberty is here to see you.”
He keyed, “Send him in.” He stood then went to face the window behind his desk. It showed a view of the cyan gas giant the small station orbited. As if on cue the Spirit of Fortune began to slide into view. The massive casino ship was the first of what Rohan hoped would be a fleet. It was a cruise ship on steroids. He could imagine a Las Vegas of various ships drifting from sector to sector generating unimaginable wealth. And of course, cleaning up some of his less-than-sterling cash-flow.
He turned back to watch the approaching man pass the mirrored water features lining Rohan’s opulent office. Mr. Liberty wore a fitted suit and smart glasses and handed Rohan a pad.
“Sir, we’ve found another ring. This one operating at the edge of ssypno space.”
Taking and reviewing the pad Rohan answered, “Perfect! Do we know their source?”
“Not yet, sir.”
“I see. That’s alright. Buy whoever you can and once you have an account of everyone tip off the GC through the usual channels. I’ll put a personal bonus on every human you and your people liberate.” He handed the pad back.
“Of course, sir.”
“Good. Get going. No time to waste.” With a nod, Mr. Liberty strode back out through the front doors.
Rohan turned to observe the Spirit of Fortune once again before crushing out his cigar and keying the intercom, “Hold all my calls and meetings. I’ll be in the vault.”
“Yes, sir”
He walked to the side of his office where a hidden door was. Opening the side panel, he placed his eye up to the retinal scanner and pressed his thumb to the DNA analysis needle. With a silent hiss the door slid open, and he descended the stairs to the heavily armored room. Inside was a vast collection of human paraphernalia.
Paintings, sculptures, and general artifacts lined the walls and adorned pedestals. This quite possibly was the largest collection of human relics. Stolen and sold on the black market, Rohan made it his mission to ensure every piece of humanity’s spirit, its soul, was once again in human hands.
He slowly walked the aisles until stopping at a small sculpture of the Buddha.
“Greed is bad, eh? If that were true, you’d still be a ssypno trophy.” He slowly gazed around at his collection. He could picture the museum of humanity and its accomplishments. A vast temple that the dispersed humans could visit, and remember who they were. Know their true nature and heart. The preservation of its soul. “I’m not proud…” he spoke to the Buddha, “But it must be done.”

2023.05.28 09:19 mirac_eren Presidential Election Runoffs in Turkey (May 28th, 2023)

Voting will end at 10 AM EST/3 PM GMT/5 PM TRT and the result are expected to be announced quickly as there will be a single ballot with two candidates.

After no candidate passed the 50% of eligible votes required to win, the top two candidates are now running to become the President of Turkey, now a powerful executive seat.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the incumbent, got 49.52% of the votes in the previous round, falling short by just 264,194 votes. His alliance secured a comfortable majority in parliament that could hinder his opponent if Erdoğan loses. Erdoğan looks to extend his rule for another five years, adding to his 20-year-long reign. During the 2 weeks, he went to the earthquake-struck region once again, where he unexpectedly kept high support for his mandate. One of the major faux pas during this time was when he admitted spreading edited videos smearing Kılıçdaroğlu for recording a campaigning video with PKK, a separatist armed group designated as terrorists internationally. Erdoğan, now supported by the 3rd place candidate, Sinan Oğan who got 5.17%, is favored to win. But there are serious doubts if Oğan's voters will follow him along.
After getting 44.88% of the votes in the first rounds, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is looking to close the 2,538,671 vote gap by winning over Oğan's voters as Oğan's decision seems to be personal with his allies now backing Kılıçdaroğlu. Kılıçdaroğlu is also trying to get the 8 million voters who did not vote to the polls. Kılıçdaroğlu's recent turn towards a more aggressive and "negative" campaigning, focusing on anti-immigrant messaging while keeping HDP's (ran under YSP, Kurdish/minority party) support despite rumors of handing interior ministry to a hard-nationalist Ümit Özdağ, could result in an upset.
With record participation abroad, which ended four days ago, the total participation rate is expected to surpass the 87.04% participation of the first round.

2023.05.28 08:33 -Bonjour-- More Madeir

From my travel report (2014):
The second trip to Madeira we made to escape the winter. The weather was like a moody diva in winter. It changes not only from day to day, but also within a few hours. So you can never plan anything for the next day, because you should not think, today it is so nice and sunny and warm, it will be the same tomorrow. But if you are unlucky, the next morning it will be completely cloudy, only to possibly be sunny again in the afternoon.
It is always a pleasure to stroll in FUNCHAL's old town. Here times an ice cream to eat, there a coffee possibly with Nata to take. But this should be done when there are no cruise ships in the harbor. Then you see fortunately more locals than tourists in the streets.
For football fans: Christiano Ronaldo, who comes from Madeira, now has his own museum in Funchal - eagerly visited by his - mostly young - supporters...
Funchal is spreading out more and more - the slopes all around are already built on, and in the hotel zone construction continues eagerly. Although it is obvious that in the newly built apartment houses still very many apartments are empty.
The first two weeks we booked apartment at about 350 m altitude with a beautiful view of Funchal. The disadvantage was that it became - especially in the evening - but quite cool. Fortunately we had not only an electric heater but also a fireplace in the apartment.
From up here you can see how Funchal has grown in recent years. It is a huge sea of houses, which goes up to all the adjacent hills.
For the second part of our stay we had chosen an apartment house at Praia do Formosa with direct view to the sea and also to Cabo Girao.
One of the most beautiful and varied gardens of Madeira is located only about 9 km east of Funchal: the Palheiro or Blandy's Gardens. In 1801, the property was purchased by Count Carvalhal. A hunting lodge was built and the count had exotic trees imported from all over the world. The count's descendants squandered the fortune, and so in 1885 the estate became the property of the Blandy family of wine merchants. The villa above the garden is still inhabited by the Blandy family and is not accessible.
The gardens are famous not only for the variety of (often exotic) plants but also for their location on a 500 m high hill with a magnificent view of the bay of Funchal. The Count's hunting lodge was renovated in 1997 and is now the exclusive hotel "Quinta Velha do Palheiro".
The gardens are divided into the main garden, the sunken garden, the valley of hell (Inferno) with mighty fern trees, the rose garden, the ladies garden and the tea house area. There are also ponds with water lilies and beautiful flower beds.
Some of the numerous trees are 100 years old. The garden has been constantly developed. Hibiscus, bougainvilleas, jacaranda, African tulip trees, coral trees and orchid trees grow here. The Blandy family imported proteas from South Africa and had a rose garden planted and a small baroque chapel built. The gardens are also famous for their numerous camellias and magnolias.
The orchid garden, created by an Austrian, apparently has more than 5000 plants and is located below the botanical garden. At the moment the orchid garden is closed, because in the big fire of 2016 in Funchal not only many houses were destroyed, but also great damage was done to the orchid garden.
Carnival is also celebrated in Madeira and by chance we saw a children's parade. It was interesting to see with which eagerness the children were partly "there". Therefore, there will probably be no problem with carnivalistic offspring in Funchal.
The town of RIBEIRA BRAVA is located at the mouth of a wide - sometimes wild (brava) river (ribeira). From Funchal there is a highway to get there. In Ribeira Brava there is a wide pebble beach, and on the other side of the promenade there are cafes and restaurants. In the historic center there are small stores, and here is also the pink town hall from the late 18th century
The Igreja de Sao Bento was built as early as 1440, but was given a new look during the Baroque period. The spire with the white-blue tile pattern and the sphere symbol of the Portuguese explorers is striking.
We still drove to Punta do Sol. This place lies between two high rocky capes. In the old core there are only a few houses and the church, behind it already begin the terraced banana fields. There is a pebble beach and on the promenade you can have a drink in small cafes. Except for us, there were hardly any tourists in the village. But here we drank the best poncha on the island. Poncha (made of honey, lemon juice and sugar cane brandy) is a kind of national drink on Madeira.
The village of Camara de Lobos - situated between two rocky cliffs - is only 9 km away from Funchal. Camara de Lobos is still a typical fishing village with the many colorful boats (xavelhas) that you can admire in the small harbor. A small church was built at the harbor early on, this was remodeled in 1420 and the current Capella Nossa Senhora de Conceicao was built.
There is still fishing and some boat building in Camara de Lobos. However, these are no longer particularly lucrative, so tourism is now a larger source of income. The fishermen in this area mainly catch the black scabbardfish (Espada), which is offered in many restaurants - also in Funchal.
There is a promenade path from the Lido in Funchal to Camara de Lobos since 2011. The path - always with a view of Cabo Girao - is partly concreted and partly laid out on wooden walkways. If you walk in the direction of Camara de Lobos, you can see the approaching waves of the Atlantic Ocean on the left and the partly high cliffs on the right. Not far behind Praia de Formosa there are some beach bars or restaurants where you can have a drink or eat quite well.
Cabo Girao near Camara de Lobos is one of the highest cliffs in the world. More than 500 m the land here falls almost vertically into the sea. Since our last visit, things had changed here, there was now a large parking lot. Then the cafes and souvenir stores were also new for us. And surprising for us was also the glass viewing platform, which exists since the end of 2012. Here you can see that wine and vegetables are grown on the small rocky outcrops. The farmers can reach their fields on the coastal fringe with a cable car. Before the cable car was built, these fields were only accessible by boat.
From Funchal it was not far to CANICO. The original village became in the course of time one of the most important tourist places on Madeira. Large hotel complexes, apartment buildings and villas were built. However, we turned off before we reached the town in order to get to Ponta do Garajau. There on a rock cliff is the 14 m high Christo Rei statue, which was erected in 1927. From here you have a beautiful view of Funchal. Since 2007, there is a cable car nearby that goes 200 m down to the pebble beach.
CURRAL DAS FREIRAS is a small village nestled between huge almost vertical mountain slopes in the heart of Madeira. There is only one road that leads serpentine to the 633 m high valley. Originally the valley was inhabited by nomads and shepherds. Towards the end of the 15th century, the land became the property of the nuns of the Santa Clara convent.
The name Curral das Freiras means "pen of the nuns". In the 16th and 17th centuries, the island was repeatedly attacked by pirates, and the nuns retreated here to the protection of the mountains, which are up to 700 meters high. Here people still live from what they grow themselves on their fertile fields. One of the specialties of the village is chestnuts. They are used to make liqueur, cakes, bread and soups, which are also sold to tourists. On November 1 of each year, the Chestnut Festival is held here.
Not many tourists come to SANTA CRUZ, although this place is certainly worth a visit. There is quite a pretty old town with the church of San Salvador built in 1533 as well as like a large modern market hall just behind the long gray pebble beach lined with date palms.
Just north of Santa Cruz is Madeira Island's airport, renamed "Cristiano Ronaldo" Airport in 2007. Opened in 1964 and reconstructed in 2000, this airport is one of the most dangerous in the world. The 2777 m long runway is built on the rocky coast above the water and looks like a bridge with large concrete supports. A large parking lot has been built below this runway.
Before the landing approach, the mountain massif must be overcome so that the narrow runway can be approached. Unfortunately, there have been numerous accidents, but this is still one of the busiest airports in Portugal.
From Santa Cruz we drove to MACHICO, one of the larger towns of Madeira. Machico profited from sugar cane cultivation in the 15th century and is now a modern town, which is divided into two halves by the Ribeira da Machico. On the eastern bank of the river is the historic fishing quarter with the main square surrounded by tall laurel trees.
The town church of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao in the center was built in the 15th century and partially rebuilt in the 18th century. Opposite stands the town hall built in the early 20th century There are several fish restaurants here.
In the surroundings of the small village FAIAL there is still a lot of agriculture, e.g. wine and fruit growing. The village is dominated by the 600 m high Eagle Rock. Only a few tourists come here, because there is hardly anything worth seeing.
Most people come to Santana to see the famous "Casas de colmo". In total there are still about a hundred of these thatched historic wooden houses. They are very scattered throughout the municipality.
On the way back to Funchal we passed through Ribera fria. Here you can take a short hike up to the Miradouro dos Balcoes, from where you have a beautiful view of the mountains.
The peninsula PONTA DE SAO LOURENCO is 9 km long and 2 km wide. In 1982 it was declared a nature reserve, mainly to ensure the preservation of the fauna with the great variety of birds and the great occurrence of the native flora. The eastern tip of Madeira is barren and windy. One can no longer imagine that everything here was lushly forested.
Then, in spring, a carpet of flowers enlivens the bare hilltops. But also in other seasons the turquoise sea and the rocks in different shades - ocher, rust, gray and green-black - bring color to the area.
The south coast can be easily approached by boats, which is almost impossible on the drastically shaped north coast with its strong winds. There is a paved access road to the parking lot above Baia de Abra. Here you can also take the public bus.
From there there is a popular rocky hiking trail. This hike is absolutely not a walk. There are some climbs, often wooden stairs. You have no shade and are exposed to gusts of wind. To avoid being blown down somewhere, I ducked down and waited out the sometimes strong gusts - really quite extreme.
At the narrowest point with a land bridge only a few meters wide, the rock drops almost 100 m vertically - fortunately the place is secured with a fence.
The hike takes - depending on your condition - 2 to 3 hours. It also depends on whether you only walk to the plateau of Casa Sardinha - administration of the national park - or if you want to make the ascent to Pico Furado. Below the Casa there are some tables for picnics. From there there is also an entrance for swimming, which can certainly be pleasant in the summer.
On the way there are always beautiful views of the sea and the rock formations - e.g. the so-called rock gate. On the south side you can see the cages of a fish farm in the sea. In front of Sao Lourenco there are two small islands, on one of them stands the oldest (from 1870) lighthouse of Madeira.
From the cape we drove to CANICAL, the easternmost municipality of Madeira. This place is still characterized by fishing and boat building. Fishing boats are still built here and there is a large repair yard.
Over the 1000 m high Encumeada Pass we drove northeast to Sao Vicente. Unfortunately the old coastal road to Seixal and Porto Moniz was closed and we had to drive through many tunnels. A few years ago it was a special experience to drive on the narrow and winding ER 101 directly at the coast - on one side the high cliffs and on the other side the sea. But apparently the road has become too dangerous in the meantime because of constant falling rocks.
We got to Porto Moniz , and unfortunately the weather got worse, more and more clouds came up. The sea raged with huge waves to the shore. Porto Moniz is a nice little town located on the northwestern tip of Madeira, a region with high mountains and views of the endless Atlantic Ocean.
From Porto Moniz you can go hiking, for example on the coastal trail "Levada da Ribeira da Janela", one of the best hiking trails in Madeira.
Porto Moniz is known for its volcanic pools. Daytrippers mostly come for these pools filled with sea water. These pools owe their formation to a lava tongue that flowed into the sea here thousands of years ago, creating caves due to the force of wind and waves. The black basalt lava pools form swimming pools and are the attraction of Porto Moniz, because you can swim (swim) in them very well - at least in good weather...
There are two different lava pools in Porto Moniz: the completely natural pools and the western pools, which have been transformed into natural outdoor pools - there are no sharp rocks here. The surrounding rocks of the outdoor pool were built as a terrace , and here you can sunbathe. The pools are open every day - even in winter. But when we were there, there was no one in the water....
The natural pools are not safe because of the black sharp basalt rocks. It is very interesting to watch the waves as they crash against the rocks. The water is sometimes whirled into the air in such a way that it looks like a geyser.
The PICO DE ARIEIRO is the most visited mountain of Madeira, because it is the only one that has been opened up with a road, but it is only the third highest. The road was probably built primarily for the observatory and not necessarily for the tourists. Already the approach through pristine landscape with rugged rock and sparse vegetation is an experience.
If the weather is good, you have a breathtaking view all around. Equally beautiful, however, is the sight of white cushions of clouds hanging between the high mountains. In winter there can be ice and snow on the peaks. Since it had snowed on Madeira about 2 weeks before our trip there, we could still see the sparse remnants on the shaded layers.
From Pico de Arieiro you can hike up to Pico Ruivo (1861 m) if the weather is good. At the beginning, the path is quite wide and in places secured by railings. Some then walk at least to the first viewpoint - the rocky peak Niho de Mata with beautiful views. The entire hike up to Pico Ruivo is clearly difficult, even if there are partially secured stairways since the 1960s. Some of the paths are steep up to 700 m, the rock steps are high, the paths are sometimes narrow and beaten, and it also goes through unlit tunnels. So you should have a good condition and be free from giddiness and sure-footed.
