Goose — Rick Mitarotonda [vocals, guitar], Peter Anspach [vocals, keys, guitar], Trevor Weekz [bass], Ben Atkind [drums], and Jeff Arevalo [vocals, percussion, drums] — fluidly traverse genres with head-spinning hooks, technical fireworks, and the kind of chemistry only possible among small town and longtime friends. Their most recent EP, Undecided, was produced by D. James Goodwin and recorded in Woodstock, NY during the same sessions that led to the LP Dripfield. Photo credit: Adam Berta

2023.03.22 15:47 WorldlinessWestern81 Chat GPT Compares Goose and Phish

Phish and Goose are two American jam bands with dedicated fan bases and a reputation for high-energy live performances. While both bands share some similarities in their musical styles and approach, there are also some notable differences between the two.
One key difference between Phish and Goose is their history and longevity. Phish has been around since the 1980s and has built a massive following over the decades, while Goose is a relatively new band that formed in 2016. As a result, Phish has a much larger catalog of music and a longer history of experimentation and evolution.
Another difference between the two bands is their musical styles. While both Phish and Goose are known for their improvisational jamming and genre-bending approach, Phish tends to incorporate more complex and intricate musical arrangements, often featuring intricate time signatures and unconventional song structures. Goose, on the other hand, leans more towards a classic rock-inspired sound with catchy hooks and driving rhythms.
In terms of live performances, both bands are known for their high-energy shows and epic jams. However, Phish's live shows often feature elaborate lighting and visual effects, as well as complex setlists that can include covers of a wide range of musical genres. Goose, on the other hand, tends to focus more on the music itself, with a stripped-down stage setup that allows the band's musicianship to take center stage.
Overall, while Phish and Goose share some similarities in their approach to music, there are also some notable differences between the two bands in terms of their history, musical style, and live performances. Ultimately, the best way to compare and contrast the two bands is to listen to their music and experience their live shows for yourself!

2023.03.16 14:36 patrickdgd Your dream setlist, but…

Create your dream setlist, but there are some restrictions.
  1. You must pick at least one song from each album.
  2. A song’s position in the setlist must correspond to its position on the album. (For example, Cream of the Crop can only be in the second position on your playlist.)
  3. The setlist must be at least ten songs long (ten albums in total, and the shortest is ten songs long) but you can make it longer if you want to include multiple songs from longer albums, or if you’d like to include WISIRO or any of the singles.
Here is mine:
  1. Chucky vs. The Giant Tortoise
  2. Midnight Crusade
  3. Me and Zoloft Get Along Just Fine
  4. Carl Barker
  5. Lemon Meringue Tie
  6. Elder Goose
  7. Honey Revenge
  8. Born to Fail
  9. Eagle vs Crows
  10. Die Another Day
  11. Turn Off The Lights, I’m Watching Back to the Future Part 2
  12. Nothing Shameful
Encore:
  1. Man of the Year
  2. Evaporate

2023.03.13 19:44 Brave_Atmosphere3668 Community Appreciation

I was at most the cap shows this past weekend and couch toured what I couldn’t. That being said, between the crowds in person and the live setlist chat feeds I was nonstop feeling the goose love all weekend. Ran into many friends from prior shows and made a lot of newer ones too. I wasn’t alive for the coming of GD or Phish, so for me personally I’ve never felt more part of a community (musically or otherwise) than what this band and it’s fans provide. Thank you to everyone of you honkers for all the fun conversations, dance moves, free slaps, pins, memes, setlist threads, and smiles. The goose community is as kind and 🔥 as the band themselves.

2023.02.27 18:32 ujusujuba Best Goose shows overall??

I see a lot of posts for best versions of songs and while that is great for a deep dive, it’s nice to listen to a full show sometimes.
Goose is pretty good at setlist construction and like any band is hotter some nights than others.
Their most recent official releases , NYE and Goosemas are the two best shows I’ve heard from them, along with the November ‘22 TAB run. Suggestions outside of those would he great as they already get a lot of praise here.
Thank you very much !! ✌️

Phish

Phish, Saturday 02/22/2020 (3 years ago) Moon Palace, Cancun, Quintana Roo, , Mexico
Gap Chart, Tour: Not Part of a Tour
Set 1 : Willin' , Tube , Evening Song , Set Your Soul Free , You Sexy Thing > 46 Days , Waste > Your Pet Cat , Tweezer > Manteca > Makisupa Policeman 1 > Twist
Set 2 : Energy > Soul Planet > Waves > Carini > Chalk Dust Torture -> Have Mercy > A Life Beyond The Dream , Harry Hood
Encore : Sweet Jane > Tweezer Reprise
1 Played over You Sexy Thing backing music.
Jamchart Notes:
Tube - Save for a few moments, Fish's drumming mostly stays close to the "Tube" structure throughout, but the jam around him changes quite a bit. Trey's play is impressive, ranging from spirited to contemplative, never landing on one theme for too long. Many "Tube" jams are compact and keep one theme; this version is wide-ranging and vast.
Manteca - > from "Tweezer" and serving as the second portion of the "Tweezer" jam. This is a fun, upbeat, full-band jam. > into a "You Sexy Thing" version of "Makisupa Policeman."
Waves - The first section recedes quietly without a return to the lyrics before the jamming begins anew in minor and works through a few different variations with Fish's ever persistent drumming keeping things moving at a brisk pace. A closing theme begins building around 15 minutes and leads to an encouraging group peak with looped guitar riffs and "Soul Planet" quotes included, and a final reset briefly hints at a new direction before jumping ship > "Carini".
Carini - > from a huge "Waves." The jam stays in familiar, dark territory until the 8:00 minute mark where Trey begins to branch out and the rest of the band follows suit. What ensues is an effect-laden, swirling, full-band jam, which eventually melts into > "Chalk Dust Torture."
Show Notes:
Willin' was performed for the first time since October 31, 2010 (349 shows) and featured Trey on drums. On stage, Fishman changed from his Jimmy Buffet style beach tuxedo into his mumu after Willin'. Page then teased Hold Your Head Up. Trey teased Tired of Waiting for You in Tube and Walk This Way and Dave's Energy Guide in Tweezer. Manteca was performed for the first time since July 19, 2016 (136 shows) included Tweezer teases from Fish and Trey. Sweet Jane was performed for the first time since July 23, 2017 (100 shows). Makisupa Policeman was played over backing music and quotes of You Sexy Thing. Waves contained Soul Planet quotes. Trey teased The Star Spangled Banner in Tweezer Reprise.

Phish, Friday 02/22/2019 (4 years ago) Barceló Maya Beach, Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, , Mexico
Gap Chart, Tour: Not Part of a Tour
Set 1 : You Enjoy Myself , Turtle in the Clouds , 46 Days , No Men In No Man's Land > Emotional Rescue , Tube > Shade , Saw It Again
Set 2 : Set Your Soul Free > Mercury > Slave to the Traffic Light > Possum > Sanity > Walk Away
Encore : More
Jamchart Notes:
Tube - A quality jam with an uncommonly subdued tone seems to momentarily wind down at 5:15 before launching into another round of synth-groove and builds to a rocking finale capped by strong Trey leads.
Set Your Soul Free - Massive Set 2 opener. Pivots into a gritty and nasty jam at Mike's urging, which gets very heavy (and a tad flubby) as Trey takes control. A gnarled groove emerges, with Page laying on the electric piano extra thick, and then Trey pivots into major-key territory. The jam grows warm and pleasant as Mike moves into the lead, Page throwing in a carnivalesque ambiance, then Trey starts firing off some crunchy solos and we enter the wonderful land of hard rocking. A few "woos" are goosed, then Page hits on some ascending not unlike "Tweezer Reprise" and the jam peaks in wonderful fashion. > into an equally outstanding "Mercury".
Mercury - Great Version. > from a huge "SYSF," play breaks free around 10:00, Trey's tone warm, rife with melody, floating atop waves of Page's now signature keys. With a series of licks Trey pushes play forward, the jam builds in energy, before a huge blast of sustain peels apart (with Page now on his piano) into one of "Mercury's" finer moments. Play rocks, with the band alighting upon a sudden, and infectious groove. Pretty cool. > "Slave."
Show Notes:
Emotional Rescue was played for the first time since August 31, 2012 (233 shows). Page teased I'm a Man (Spencer Davis Group) in Set Your Soul Free and She Said She Said in Mercury.

Phish, Saturday 02/22/2003 (20 years ago) U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati, OH, USA
Gap Chart, Tour: 2003 Winter Tour
Set 1 : The Sloth , Dogs Stole Things , Piper -> Weekapaug Groove , Dirt > Scent of a Mule , Walls of the Cave , Mountains in the Mist , Sample in a Jar
Set 2 : Tube > Bathtub Gin , Friday > David Bowie , Bug
Encore : Suzy Greenberg
Jamchart Notes:
Weekapaug Groove - Good -> in from "Piper," this is the first ever stand-alone "Weekapaug." The jam is spirited, exploratory, and includes a dark, tension-filled section from 4:40 - 5:30 that makes the ensuing return to "Weekapaug" all the sweeter.
Walls of the Cave - Extended "Type I" jam with building energy.
Tube - Great interplay between Page and Trey and an extended guitar-led jam. > to "Bathtub Gin".
Bathtub Gin - Intense and highly improvisational jam with more of a rocking, propulsive and edgy sentiment, and in this way similar to the '94 - '95 "Gins." In the final minutes, the band toys with the "Gin" theme in a dark, twisted manner.
David Bowie - Lots of good exploration in this intense version with a little lull midway. Fish is really excellent.
Show Notes:
Piper contained a DEG tease. For the first known time, Weekapaug was played without Mike's Song (possibly to bring closure to the Mike's Song a night earlier). Gin included a Mr. Completely tease. Trey teased San-Ho-Zay in Suzy Greenberg.
Listen now at Phish.in!

Set 2 : Chalk Dust Torture , Bathtub Gin > Sparkle > Simple > Jesus Just Left Chicago , Harry Hood > Free , Hello My Baby
Encore : Johnny B. Goode
1 Trey on acoustic guitar.
Jamchart Notes:
Chalk Dust Torture - Somewhat unusual jamming with great Mike and Trey teamwork.
Show Notes:
2001 contained Super Bad teases from Trey. Talk featured Trey on acoustic guitar.

Set 2 : Runaway Jim , It's Ice > Uncle Pen , Tweezer > Glide , You Enjoy Myself , The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > Llama , Hold Your Head Up > Love You > Hold Your Head Up , The Squirming Coil , Tweezer Reprise
Encore : Amazing Grace , Fire
1 Simpsons signal. 2 Simpsons and Random Note signals introduced. 3 Trey sang verses through megaphone. 4 Fish on trombone.
Jamchart Notes:
David Bowie - Yet another rock solid "Bowie" from February 1993. Great melodic variation by Trey.
Show Notes:
Guelah Papyrus included a Simpsons signal before the Secret Language Instructions. The Instructions included a Call to the Post tease from Page and introductions of the Simpsons and Random Note signals. Trey sang the verses of Fee through a megaphone. I Didn't Know featured Fish on trombone. The Bowie intro contained Maze teases from Mike. The YEM vocal jam was based on How Many More Times (Led Zeppelin) and later contained Frankenstein and Jeopardy! teases. Trey teased the theme from Woody Woodpecker before The Squirming Coil.

1 Vocal jam based on burgers. 2 Fish on trombone.
Jamchart Notes:
Run Like an Antelope - Aggressive Trey in a dissonant jam with strong Evil Mike in a slightly jazzy mode.
Show Notes:
The YEM vocal jam was based on burgers. The HYHU intro and outro and the intro to Antelope included Let's Go teases. Love You and the Whole Lotta Love Jam featured Fish on trombone.

2023.02.17 04:40 samsharksworthy How much of the modern jam band sound/scene is derived from Phish?

I was looking at a Grateful Dead setlist and noticing the songs weren't too long which got me thinking about the modern jam scene and its propensity for enormous 20 and 30 minute jams being more regular which seems like a much more Phish thing which got me wondering how much of the modern jam sound is from Phish? Overall I think the Grateful Dead vibe is inspiring to jammers but the extra long jams, big peaks, the emphasis on light shows and more so the overall funk/prog sound that a lot of jam bands have seems to have come from Phish. Now I'm pretty Phish centric so I could definitly be wrong and I wasn't around for the 90s big push of jam bands so I can't say for sure thats how it happened but when I hear Goose it sounds like derivative Phish, not an insult I like Goose, or Twiddle or Spafford and other bands you hear a lot of Phish influence. Plus you've got Phish kind of inventing the modern music festival. What do you think?

2022.12.20 23:57 GratefulGumbo Goosemas was great and all but...

Can we talk about Fox Theater??? Most people are talking solely about the amazing setlist (which it is) but, man, I really feel like this is some of the most genuine fun I've had listening to them in a while. Listened to every show of this year but there's something about 12/18/22 that just has the energy and spontaneity that I feel a lot of the 2020 and 2021 shows had that made me fall in love with Goose in the first place.
2022 Goose has been amazing, but something feels special about this show. Is it that they feel less pressure with the smaller crowd, especially knowing that everyone there is a pretty die-hard Goose fan? Was it solely that it was a charity show, so naturally it was gonna have some more surprises? Idk, I just found everything (the setlist, the jams, the stage banter, the spontaneity and the surprises, the cover choices etc.) so fun and exciting again, just like how things were when I first discovered this band. I mean, slow Echo AND fast All I Need?? Peter's animal noises AND Axel F teases on Crosseyed and Painless???
Despite all this, I feel like no one is talking about how great this show is besides the setlist; most of the focus is still on Goosemas. I really hope they take some inspiration from this show moving into 2023. Anyone else feel the same here?

2022.12.09 20:24 OnlyListensToGoose 4 nights, 4 shows - Colorado, December 2019

Goose’s meteoric rise can be traced back to the infamous Peach Fest 2019, a time when the band was still playing small-town bars as a flock of four. Since then, Goose has soared to new heights, evolving in both sound and personnel, perhaps most notably in the form of percussionist/vocalist Jeff Arevalo, who debuted on the first night of Bingo Tour in summer 2020.
The December 2019 Colorado run falls in between those two landmark dates, and serves as an excellent barometer for Goose’s progression. The setlists from these shows will feel familiar to any current fan, but don’t let appearances fool you; the songs may be the same, but the execution is far different. High energy and relentless, these shows exhibit a younger band, with fun, creative melodies that serve as a precursor to their present-day jams.
Goose was ready to take flight, and fly they did.
12/05/2019
This epic run began at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, and it was an electric performance from the start. Opening with Me & My Uncle, they moved swiftly along into an incredible Lead the Way, which featured a beautiful rhythmic jam that showcased Snakes’ brilliant guitar work. This was tailed by Time to Flee, in which Handini showed off the moves on the keys for a bit before they jumped into a funky jaunt to close the song out.
Set 2 was the highlight of this show, and according to the official show notes, it was as follows: Jive I > Weird Fishes > Into the Myst > Turned Clouds > Tumble > Make the Move > Tumble > Cantaloupe Island > Tumble.
Quite the monster, especially that mega-Tumble sandwich. It looks like the whole set was one long segue, each song blending into the next, except that there was a clear break after Into the Myst. Still, only one break in an entire set? Not bad. Every song delivers here, though it was Into the Myst and Make the Move that really stood out. Into the Myst was preceded by Weird Fishes, and notes of the latter could be heard as they broke out the jam, beginning slow and smooth before launching into a hard-hitting groove. Make the Move was short and sweet, running less than 3 minutes, but the slowed down rendition was memorable.
The night was capped with a Disco Inferno encore, featuring a stage plot / fire vocal jam and hints of Hot Tea. If you haven’t listened to Disco Inferno, or haven’t found one that hooked you, give this one a shot; this might be their best version to date.
12/06/2019
Night 2 brought the band to Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver, and treated the guests there to a killer concert. Set 1 kicked off with longtime classic Madhuvan, and was succeeded by the tri-combo punch of Inside Out > Creatures > Shama Lama Ding Dong before the set closed with a high-octane Hot Tea.
Set 2 was again the star of the show, leading off with a powerful Yeti > Pumped Up Kicks. A fantastic Slow Ready followed, however it was Drive that carried the set. WizKid hyped the crowd by playing the “Charge” fanfare before the song, and the audience came through in the clutch by yelling “Goose!” rather than the standard “Charge!” (This would be tried again with the opening of Jive Lee on 5/8/21, but the crowd didn’t yell “Goose!”, unfortunately). They then dove right into Drive, and this 20-minute firecracker was a delight. The jam got going about 7-minutes in, and they wasted no time lighting the fuse, lifting off, and sending an absolute rocket across Denver.
Throw in a Ghostbusters Rap with a stage plot / goo jam and a Hot Hot Hot encore and call it a show.
12/07/2019 – 12/08/2019
Nights 3 & 4 were both at the Old Town Pub in Steamboat Springs, and they were sensational. It was these two nights that solidified this run as something special.
Night 3 got started with a frenzied Flopener (with antiquated lyrics) that swung into a heated Doc Brown and then Green River. Set 1 was the standout this night, largely due to two outstanding performances: Wysteria Lane and All I Need. They kept the jams rather grounded on both of these, travelling at the behest of Richk’s virtuoso expertise, and the result is a pair of strong, persistent tunes. Not to mention that the latter was a fast, original All I Need, which is always a treat. White Lights closer was white hot, with a front-half jam led by scorching keys before settling into a blazing guitar display on the back-half, and set the tone for a fun Don’t Do It encore.
Night 4, the final, and possibly greatest, stop of this legendary run. The band opened with a couple of commonplace covers in Atlas and Switchin’, and while they were both phenomenal, Switchin’ was on another level entirely. The momentum was carried into a round of Tumble, then into two more staples: A Western Sun and Time to Flee. All three of these originals were stunningly executed, and hold up well even when stacked against contemporary arrangements. The group didn’t slow down as they ended the set with Me and Julio Down by the School Yard with lights guru Andrew Goedde whistling.
Set 2 picked up right where set 1 left off, set in motion by a magnetic Doobie Song > Drive > Danger Zone trio. It was the second Drive in as many days, this one sporting a psychedelic I.U.B. vocal jam before taking off into orbit. A cover of Everywhere by Mitchell Branch came next, with a brief introduction by Peter where he described how he almost missed the gig due to a snow incident. Goose hasn’t played this song again, indeed they had only played it twice up to that point, but hopefully it’s nearing a return. It’s an enjoyable, feel-good cover, and encapsulates the sort of energy that they were playing with back in 2019. They still break covers like this out, too; It’s My Life, a Talk Talk original, perhaps more popularly attributed to No Doubt, made it’s debut on 8/17/22.
The 4-night run came to an end with a beast of a finale: Jive Lee > A Fifth of Beethoven > 2001 > Ain’t Life Grand > Shout. No encore tonight, and none needed. Longtime fan-favorite Jive Lee doesn’t disappoint, topped off by a commandingly brief percussion refrain by Spuds and setting the stage for an instrumental trifecta. Widespread Panic fans will instantly recognize Ain’t Life Grand, and the band does this cover justice before making their way into Shout by the Isley Brothers, another cover that really captures the spirit of 2019 Goose.
Throughout this 4-night run, Goose only played a handful of songs that won’t be found on a 2022 setlist: Cantaloupe Island, Hot Hot Hot, Danger Zone (for shame!), Everywhere, 2001, Ain’t Life Grand, and Shout. Despite this, these 2019 shows sounds quite distinct when compared to their most recent shows, specifically the TABoose Fall Tour. Goose has grown significantly in three short years, and this insane 4-night, 4-show run in the waning weeks of 2019 goes to show that they have always possessed the pedigree to eclipse the jam band scene.
