We're getting very close to figuring out who our 68 teams tournament teams will be. Friday brought the death of 20 more teams, narrowing our March possibilities to just 94. That's a lot of sadness and not a lot of gladness!
PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING: For the sake of simplicity, teams that are mathematically eliminated from qualifying for their conference tournament will be listed as eliminated once said conference tournament commences. So a team like Columbia, already mathematically eliminated from appearing in the Ivy League tournament, will appear here once the Ivy League tournament starts on March 11. This is because it is often impossible to track down the exact date a team no longer has a record that could possibly make their conference tournament. This alternative allows for continuity through each conference.

Absolute carnage throughout the college basketball world today, as 47 more teams have had their dancing hopes dashed, including a pair of notable names that would be all-time tournament stunners if they were selected; these teams didn't need to win their conference's automatic bid, but they did need to do more than what they've done.
PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING: For the sake of simplicity, teams that are mathematically eliminated from qualifying for their conference tournament will be listed as eliminated once said conference tournament commences. So a team like Columbia, already mathematically eliminated from appearing in the Ivy League tournament, will appear here once the Ivy League tournament starts on March 11. This is because it is often impossible to track down the exact date a team no longer has a record that could possibly make their conference tournament. This alternative allows for continuity through each conference.

Apologies to anyone who has suffered a miscarriage. The loss of a child in the womb affects everyone differently. If this discussion causes you distress, please do not read.
I have tried not to discuss Meghan’s miscarriage, because it is a sensitive topic. However, the Sussexes have released so many stories about it, that discussions are inevitable. Here are just a few questions about their story.
Harry allowed to stay with Meg in hospital during Covid?
Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royals on 8 January, 2020. After a brief stay in Canada, they relocated to the US in March 2020.
It was very bad timing. SARS-Cov-2 had begun to spread in California such that Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on 4 March 2020. Less than three weeks later, California went into lockdown - the first US state to do so.
As the death toll rose, Newsom later ordered tougher restrictions on 1 July 2020.
According to her op-Ed in the New York Times, Meghan had the miscarriage in July 2020. “Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears,” she narrated.
A few have doubted this account. In the midst of a raging pandemic, most hospitals did not allow visitors. Social distancing was strictly enforced.
Is it possible that Meghan was admitted to a private hospital where her husband was allowed to accompany her? The hospital policy might have also permitted close contact between people living in the same bubble.
Note: according to u/QuesoFresca - during Covid, the California Department of State Hospitals had mandated that “Normal hospital visiting has been prohibited until further notice, except for court-ordered evaluations, other legal matters, or end-of-life care” - Source
If Harry was allowed to visit and stay at Meghan’s bedside he may have exerted some unusual privilege to do so.
How did they manage to bring home the fetal remains?
Excerpts from Harry’s autobiography indicated that they had brought the fetal remains home, which they buried under a banyan tree.
“We left the hospital with our unborn child. A tiny package. We went to a place, a secret place only we knew. Under a spreading banyan tree, while Meg wept, I dug a hole with my hands and set the tiny package softly in the ground.”
Laws regarding the disposition of fetal remains vary in every US state. For example, in Texas, the process differs depending on the maturity of the fetus.
A fetus less than 20 weeks old or weighing less than 350 grams may be buried or cremated, or disposed at the discretion of the hospital. A fetus more than 20 weeks old, or weighing more than 350 grams, is considered a stillbirth and should be buried or cremated by Texas law.
Usually all arrangements are made through a funeral service that works with the hospital.
Catholic parents - or those of similar faiths - may wish to bury their unborn child themselves, and there is a procedure one must follow to carry this out, as mentioned in this blog by a grieving mother.
Bringing home fetal remains is an unusual request, and the process is an arduous one. The parents must specify that they wish to bury the remains themselves, and sign release forms. They must also have permission to transport human remains.
In the UK, a stillbirth is defined as occurring after 24 weeks, but the procedure to bring home fetal remains is pretty much the same. If I am mistaken, please let me know in the comments.
Consider that this all transpired at the height of the pandemic. I am not denigrating the choice of bringing home a miscarried fetus for private burial. However I am skeptical that any hospital, during the height of a pandemic, with deaths rising daily and no cure or vaccine in sight, would allow people to bring home human remains which could be a potential source of infection.
Are there banyan trees in California?
Some have also doubted the presence of banyan trees in California, but they do seem to grow prolifically there, and is said to be a “common street tree in western and Southern California”.
Just note that there is a wide variety of trees called banyans.
Still, this detail does little to settle the unease of knowing that one might stumble unawares upon a secretly buried fetus under a random banyan tree.
Were they inspired by a similar event from Diana’s life?
A few have wondered if the Sussexes adopted a story about Diana helping to bury a friend’s stillborn child, as told by her butler Paul Burrell. According to Burrell, Diana had arranged for the stillborn child of close friend Rosa Monckton to be buried in the private grounds of the palace.
It took six hours for Burrell to dig a 5-foot deep grave in the garden. The funeral was later attended by close family and blessed by a Catholic priest.
This seems more fitting then just digging a grave with one’s hands and at an unknown location - not even placing the remains in a box, but rather wrapped in a tiny package.
Why go through the trouble of bringing the fetus home, and not bother with a proper acknowledgment of the unborn child? Why bury them in such a shallow location (as one can do, using only hands)?
While everyone should grieve after a miscarriage in their own way, they should perhaps refrain from repeatedly putting this story out there for public consumption. I sympathise with their loss; but at some point, sympathy gives way to weary skepticism.
*Edit: this post begs the question of whether burying the fetus, as described, was even legal. It is not.

Still, this detail does little to settle the unease of knowing that one might stumble unawares upon a secretly buried fetus under a random banyan tree.
Were they inspired by a similar event from Diana’s life?
A few have wondered if the Sussexes adopted a story about Diana helping to bury a friend’s stillborn child, as told by her butler Paul Burrell. According to Burrell, Diana had arranged for the stillborn child of close friend Rosa Monckton to be buried in the private grounds of the palace.
It took six hours for Burrell to dig a 5-foot deep grave in the garden. The funeral was later attended by close family and blessed by a Catholic priest.
This seems more fitting then just digging a grave with one’s hands and at an unknown location - not even placing the remains in a box, but rather wrapped in a tiny package.
Why go through the trouble of bringing the fetus home, and not bother with a proper acknowledgment of the unborn child? Why bury them in such a shallow location (as one can do, using only hands)?
While everyone should grieve after a miscarriage in their own way, they should perhaps refrain from repeatedly putting this story out there for public consumption. I sympathise with their loss; but at some point, sympathy gives way to weary skepticism.
*Edit: this post begs the question of whether burying the fetus, as described, was even legal. It is not.
