Days leading up to the solar eclipse
This is a relativity odd but scientific question that I’m hoping someone here can help me understand a little better.
Back in 2017, I was living in New Hampshire but I was born and raised in Southeast Missouri, roughly 30 miles from Carbondale, IL, the center of totality with the greatest duration time. I had already planned a trip to go home for the event as I was super excited to finally see it (I’ve been looking forward to it since 9th grade science.) A few days before the event (Around August 15-17th,) I was at the beach in NH at Hampton Beach with some friends. Pretty much all I was talking about at this point was the eclipse. While everyone in the ocean, I looked up in the sky to see the Sun and to my surprise, the moon was significantly larger than normal but most oddly, it was super close to the Sun.
I didn’t have my phone on me since I was at the beach but that image is burned into my brain. I have always wondered why the moon was that close to the Sun. This was around 12-2pm during the day.
I added a quick photoshop to illustrate what I saw. Thank you. :)

2023.06.06 02:14 pauladeanlovesbutter Am I the A-hole: teacher edition

Hello everyone. I work at "School A" for about a year, but I've been in education for a devcade. A good friend of mine's son is applying for a job at my school and has a demo tomorrow (Tuesday) at my school. He's a PE teacher, but this is for a classroom health position. Her son was informed of this last Friday. Today, at 5pm, her son called me asking me to look over his demo and for any tips on the debrief interview that comes after.
Be aware, the observers in the demo are the same evaluators who observe me throughout the year. I've been observed 5 times. Once by the principal, four times by my AP. I also demo'd with the principal and AP in my room for when I originally got my job last year, plus a follow up interview after the lesson (where I was eventually offered the job).
We changed some things on his slides. We deleted some of them (it was way too long for the time allotted) and reorganized some of them to make it flow better (or so I thought.). Also, We changed his do now activity. Originally, this young man was not going to have any worksheet to accompany his slides. The students were going to just write things down on a piece of paper (assuming they had any) along with classroom discussion. I suggested he have everything on a worksheet, one page, and print it out. Going through the slides, he had a jeopardy activity. His final jeopardy question was the summary question. Again, he had no worksheet, so I suggested he have that summary question added at the end of a created worksheet, and at the end of the lesson, use that question as an exit ticket to assess for understanding. I suggested he have the kids make name plates with their names on them so he can call on the students by name. Lastly, he said he was going to show up in a 3/4 zip and kahkis for the demo and interview. I suggested he wear a suit, but during the demo lose the suit jacket and just teach in the shirt and tie. He says thank you and hangs up the phone.
Soon after I get a call from his mom. His mom is a good friend/mentor to me. She actually helped me get the job I have at this school her son is now interviewing at. She was livid, accusing me of sapping his confidence. She said I overloaded him with information, his confidence is down the toilet because he thinks he sucks, and that this conversation was inappropriate to have the night before his demo lesson. I replied with: he had the entire weekend to call me and did so now, and I work in this school and know what they are looking for. She replied that I have only been in this school for a year, she's been a teacher for over 34 years, and all they are looking for in a demo lesson is someone who can make connections with kids and has a good personality. He doesn't have a printer, has no way to make copies and now he's running around like a chicken without a head. All she wanted me to do was to prop him up and give him some confidence. She never expressed that in previous conversations we had.
So, reddit, I am honestly asking for opinions here. Am I the A-hole here? Did I do the wrong thing? TYIA.

2023.06.06 00:42 ZslayerDnd Curse/blessing for martials

I’m trying to make a cursed ability for the champion fighter in my 5e game
What I’ve come up with so far is this
Once per short rest you can activate this power, you roll a D4+2 this is your curse number, you subtract this number from your AC but add it to both your attack and damage rolls, after 1 min the effect wears off and for your next 10 rolls you will take a penalty to all ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls equal too half of your curse number (this can stack if used multiple times per day) to a maximum of -10
I’m thinking of adding an extra part to the curse that forces the user to attack something every turn even if they are friendly
I’d love to hear about any recommendations or critiques on this, thank you
Edit: changed from once per long rest to once per short rest, and the after effect only last for the next 10 rolls instead of until finishing a long rest

Abstract; Figures 1-8 #Hierarchical fluctuation shapes a #dynamic #flow linked to #states of #consciousness Nature Communications (@NatureComms) [Jun 2023]

Abstract

Consciousness arises from the spatiotemporal neural dynamics, however, its relationship with neural flexibility and regional specialization remains elusive. We identified a consciousness-related signature marked by shifting spontaneous fluctuations along a unimodal-transmodal cortical axis. This simple signature is sensitive to altered states of consciousness in single individuals, exhibiting abnormal elevation under psychedelics and in psychosis. The hierarchical dynamic reflects brain state changes in global integration and connectome diversity under task-free conditions. Quasi-periodic pattern detection revealed that hierarchical heterogeneity as spatiotemporally propagating waves linking to arousal. A similar pattern can be observed in macaque electrocorticography. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of principal cortical gradient preferentially recapitulated the genetic transcription levels of the histaminergic system and that of the functional connectome mapping of the tuberomammillary nucleus, which promotes wakefulness. Combining behavioral, neuroimaging, electrophysiological, and transcriptomic evidence, we propose that global consciousness is supported by efficient hierarchical processing constrained along a low-dimensional macroscale gradient.

Fig. 1

Shared spatial signature of cortex-wide BOLD amplitude relating to anesthesia, sleep, and vigilance.
a Schematic diagram of the dexmedetomidine-induced sedation paradigm; z-normalized BOLD amplitude was compared between initial wakefulness and sedation states (n = 21 volunteers) using a two-sided paired t-test; fMRI was also collected during the recovery states and showed a similar pattern (Supplementary Fig. 1).
b Cortex-wide, unthresholded t-statistical map of dexmedetomidine-induced sedation effect. For the purposes of visualization as well as statistical comparison, the map was projected from the MNI volume into a surface-based CIFTI file format and then smoothed for visualization (59412 vertexes; same for the sleep dataset).
c Principal functional gradient captures spatial variation in the sedation effect (wakefulness versus sedation: r = 0.73, Pperm < 0.0001, Spearman rank correlation).
d During the resting-state fMRI acquisition, the level of vigilance is hypothesized to be inversely proportional to the length of scanning in a substantial proportion of the HCP population (n = 982 individuals).
e Cortex-wide unthresholded correlation map between time intervals and z-normalized BOLD amplitude; a negative correlation indicates that the signal became more variable along with scanning time and vice versa.
f The principal functional gradient is correlated with the vigilance decrease pattern (r = 0.78, Pperm < 0.0001, Spearman rank correlation).
g Six volunteers participated in a 2-h EEG–fMRI sleep paradigm; the sleep states were manually scored into wakefulness, N1, N2, and slow-wave sleep by two experts.
h The cortex-wide unthresholded correlation map relating to different sleep stages; a negative correlation corresponds to a larger amplitude during deeper sleep and vice versa.
i The principal functional gradient is associated with the sleep-related pattern (r = 0.58, Pperm < 0.0001, Spearman rank correlation).
j Heatmap plot for spatial similarities across sedation, resting-state drowsiness, and sleep pattens.
km Box plots showing consciousness-related maps (be) in 17 Yeo’s networks31. In each box plot, the midline represents the median, and its lower and upper edges represent the first and third quartiles, and whiskers represent the 1.5 × interquartile range (sample size vary across 17 Yeo’s networks, see Supplementary Fig. 3).
Each network’s color is defined by its average principal gradient, with a jet colorbar employed for visualization.

Fig. 2

Low-dimensional hierarchical index tracks fluctuations in multiple consciousness-related brain states.
a The hierarchical index distinguished the sedation state from wakefulness/recovery at the individual level (**P < .01, wakefulness versus sedation: t = 6.96, unadjusted P = 6.6 × 10−7; recovery versus sedation: t = 3.19, unadjusted P = 0.0046; no significant difference was observed between wakefulness and recovery; two-sided paired t-test; n = 21 volunteers, each scanned in three conditions).
b Top: distribution of the tendency of the hierarchical index to drift during a ~15 min resting-state scanning in HCP data (982 individuals × 4 runs; *P < 0.05, unadjusted, Pearson trend test); a negative correlation indicates a decreasing trend during the scanning; bottom: partial correlation (controlling for sex, age, and mean framewise distance) between the hierarchical index (averaged across four runs) and behavioral phenotypes. PC1 of reaction time and PSQI Component 3 were inverted for visualization (larger inter-individual hierarchical index corresponds to less reaction time and healthier sleep quality).
c The hierarchical index captures the temporal variation in sleep stages in each of six volunteers (gray line: scores by expert; blue line: hierarchical index; Pearson correlation). The vertical axis represents four sleep stages (wakefulness = 0, N1 = −1, N2 = −2, slow-wave sleep = −3) with time is shown on the horizontal axis (Subject 2 and Subject 4 were recorded for 6000 s; the others summed up to 6750 s); For the visualization, we normalized the hierarchical indices across time and added the average value of the corresponding expert score.
d Distribution of the hierarchical index in the Myconnectome project. Sessions on Thursdays are shown in red color (potentially high energic states, unfasting / caffeinated) and sessions on Tuesdays in blue (fasting/uncaffeinated). Applying 0.2 as the threshold corresponding to a classification accuracy over 80% (20 of 22 Tuesday sessions surpassed 0.2; 20 in 22 Thursday sessions were of below 0.2)
ef The hierarchical index can explain intra-individual variability in energy levels across different days (two-sided unadjusted Spearman correlation). The error band represents the 95% confidence interval. Source data are provided as a Source Data file.

Fig. 3

Hierarchical index in psychedelic and psychotic brains.
a LSD effects on the hierarchical index across 15 healthy volunteers. fMRI images were scanned three times for each condition of LSD administration and a placebo. During the first and third scans, the subjects were in an eye-closed resting-state; during the second scan, the subjects were simultaneously exposed to music. A triangle (12 of 15 subjects) indicates that the hierarchical indices were higher across three runs during the LSD administration than in the placebo condition.
b Left: relationship between the hierarchical index and BPRS positive symptoms across 133 individuals with either ADHD, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder (r = 0.276, P = 0.0012, two-sided unadjusted Spearman correlation). The error band represents the 95% confidence interval of the regression estimate. Right: correlation between the hierarchical index and each item in BPRS positive symptoms (\P < 0.05, \*P < 0.01, two-sided unadjusted Spearman correlation; see Source Data for specific r and P values).
c Left: the hierarchical index across different clinical groups from the UCLA dataset (SZ schizophrenia, n = 47; BP bipolar disorder, n = 45; ADHD attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, n = 41; HC healthy control, n = 117); right: the hierarchical index across individuals with schizophrenia (n = 92) and healthy control (n = 98) from the PKU6 dataset. In each box plot, the midline represents the median, and its lower and upper edges represent the first and third quartiles, and whiskers represent the 1.5 × interquartile range. \P < 0.05\, **P* < 0.01, two-tailed two-sample t-test. Source data are provided as a Source Data file.

Fig. 4

Complex and dynamic brain states unveiled by global signal topology and the hierarchical index during rest.
a Simplified diagram for dynamic GS topology analysis.
b two-cluster solution of the GS topology in 9600 time windows from 100 unrelated HCP individuals. Scatter and distribution plots of the hierarchical index; the hierarchical similarity with the GS topology is shown. Each point represents a 35 s fragment. State 1 has significantly larger hierarchical index (P < 0.0001, two-sided two-sample t-test) and hierarchical similarity with GS topology (P < 0.0001, two-sided two-sample t-test) than State 2, indicating a higher level of vigilance and more association regions contributing to global fluctuations; meanwhile, the two variables are moderately correlated (r = 0.55, P < 1 × 10−100, two-sided Spearman correlation).
c For a particular brain region, its connectivity entropy is characterized by the diversity in the connectivity pattern.
d Left: Higher overall connectivity entropy in State 1 than State 2 (P = 1.4 × 10−71, two-sided two-sample t-test, nstate 1 = 4571, nstate 2 = 5021). Right: higher overall connectivity entropy in states with a higher hierarchical index (top 20% versus bottom 20%; P < 1 × 10−100, two-sided two-sample t-test, nhigh = 1920, nlow = 1920). *P < 0.0001. In each box plot, the midline represents the median, and its lower and upper edges represent the first and third quartiles, and whiskers represent the 1.5 × interquartile range.
e, Difference in GS topology between State 1 and State 2 spatially recapitulates the principal functional gradient (r = 0.89, P < 1 × 10−100), indicating that the data-driven GS transition moves along the cortical hierarchy.
f Distribution of Pearson’s correlation between the hierarchical index and mean connectivity entropy across 96 overlapping windows (24 per run) across 100 individuals. In most individuals, the hierarchical index covaried with the diversity of the connectivity patterns (mean r = 0.386). Source data are provided as a Source Data file.

fMRI quasiperiodic pattern manifested in different vigilance states.
a A cycle of spatiotemporal QPP reference from Yousef & Keilholz;26 x-axis: HCP temporal frames (0.72 s each), y-axis: dot product of cortical BOLD values and principal functional gradient. Three representative frames were displayed: lower-order regions-dominated pattern (6.5 s), intermediate pattern (10.8 s) and associative regions-dominated pattern (17.3 s).
b A schematic diagram to detect QPP events in fMRI. The sliding window approach was applied to select spatiotemporal fragments, which highly resemble the QPP reference.
c, d, Group-averaged QPP events detected in different vigilance states (initial and terminal 400 frames, respectively). For this visualization, the time series of the bottom 20% (c, blue) and top 20% (d, red) of the hierarchy regions were averaged across 30 frames. Greater color saturation corresponds to the initial 400 frames with plausibly higher vigilance. Line of dashes: r = 0.5.
e, f, Distribution of the temporal correlations between the averaged time series in the template and all the detected QPP events. Left: higher vigilance; right: lower vigilance. For the top 20% multimodal areas, an r threshold of 0.5 was displayed to highlight the heterogeneity between the two states.
g Mean correlation map of Yeo 17 networks across QPP events in different vigilance states. Left: higher vigilance; right: lower vigilance.
h A thresholded t-statistic map of the Yeo 17 networks measures the difference in Fig. 5g (edges with uncorrected P < .05 are shown, two-sided two-sample t-test). Source data are provided as a Source Data file.

Fig. 6

Hierarchical dynamics in macaque electrocorticography.
a, b Principal embedding of gamma BLP connectome for Monkey Chibi and Monkey George. For this visualization, the original embedding value was transformed into a ranking index value for each macaque.
c, d Cortex-wide unthresholded t-statistical map of the sleep effect for two monkeys. The principal functional gradient spatially associated with the sleep altered pattern (Chibi: n = 128 electrodes; George: n = 126 electrodes; Spearman rank correlation). Error band represents 95% confidence interval.
e, f Cortex-wide unthresholded t-statistical map of anesthesia effect for two monkeys. Principal functional gradient correlated with anesthesia-induced pattern (Chibi: n = 128 electrodes; George: n = 126 electrodes; Spearman rank correlation). Error band represents 95% confidence interval.
g, h The hierarchical index was computed for a 150-s recording fragment and can distinguish different conscious states (*P < 0.01, two-sided t-test). From left to right: eyes-open waking, eyes-closed waking, sleeping, recovering from anesthesia, and anesthetized states (Chibi: ns = 60, 55, 109, 30, 49 respectively; George: ns = 56, 56, 78, 40, 41, respectively).
i A typical cycle of gamma-BLP QPP in Monkey C; x-axis: temporal frames (0.4 s each), y-axis: dot product of gamma-BLP values and principal functional gradient. The box’s midline represents the median, and its lower and upper edges represent the first and third quartiles, and whiskers represent the 1.5 × interquartile range.
j Representative frames across 20 s. For better visualization, the mean value was subtracted in each frame across the typical gamma-BLP QPP template.
k, l, Spectrogram averaged over high- and low-order electrodes (top 20%: left; bottom: right) in macaque C across several sleep recording (k) and awake eyes-open recording sessions.
m Peak differences in gamma BLP between high- and low-order electrodes differentiate waking and sleeping conditions (Chibi, *P < 0.01; two-sided t-test; eye-opened: n = 213; eye-closed: n = 176; sleeping: n = 426).
n The peak difference in gamma BLP (in the initial 12 s) predicts the later 4 s nonoverlapping part of the change in average delta power across the cortex-wide electrodes (Monkey Chibi: awake eye-closed condition, Pearson correlation). Error band represents 95% confidence interval for regression.

Fig. 7

Histaminergic system and hierarchical organization across the neocortex.
a Z-normalized map of the HDC transcriptional landscape based on the Allen Human Brain Atlas and the Human Brainnetome Atlas109.
b, c Gene expression pattern of the HDC is highly correlated with functional hierarchy (r = 0.72, Pperm < .0001, spearman rank correlation) and the expression of the HRH1 gene (r = 0.73, Pperm < .0001, spearman rank correlation). Error band shows 95% confidence interval for regression. Each region’s color is defined by its average principal gradient, and a plasma colormap is used for visualization.
d Distribution of Spearman’s Rho values across the gene expression of 20232 genes and the functional hierarchy. HDC gene and histaminergic receptors genes are highlighted.
e Spatial association between hypothalamic subregions functional connection to cortical area and functional gradient across 210 regions defined by Human Brainnetome Atlas. The tuberomammillary nucleus showed one of the most outstanding correlations. From left to right: tuberomammillary nucleus (TM), anterior hypothalamic area (AH), dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DM), lateral hypothalamus (LH), paraventricular nucleus (PA), arcuate nucleus (AN), suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCh), dorsal periventricular nucleus (DP), medial preoptic nucleus (MPO), periventricular nucleus (PE), posterior hypothalamus (PH), ventromedial nucleus (VM).

Fig. 8

A summary model of findings in this work.
a A schematic diagram of our observations based on a range of conditions: Altered global state of consciousness associates with the hierarchical shift in cortical neural variability. Principal gradients of functional connectome in the resting brain are shown for both species. Yellow versus violet represent high versus low loadings onto the low-dimensional gradient.
b Spatiotemporal dynamics can be mapped to a low-dimensional hierarchical score linking to states of consciousness.
c Abnormal states of consciousness manifested by a disruption of cortical neural variability, which may indicate distorted hierarchical processing.
d During vivid wakefulness, higher-order regions show disproportionately greater fluctuations, which are associated with more complex global patterns of functional integration/coordination and differentiation. Such hierarchical heterogeneity is potentially supported by spatiotemporal propagating waves and by the histaminergic system.

2023.06.05 22:31 thesamstorm Grieving and feeling confused after returning second cat

First off, thank you to everyone who tried to help me when I was struggling with the adoption of my second cat and trying to encourage more patience and time. It meant a lot to me.
My partner and I returned our second cat to the rescue after 2.5 weeks. I know it wasn't a long time, but I was unable to handle the anxiety that I woke up with every morning. My mental health was in the gutter and I was putting off all the other things I wanted/needed to do for myself. I suffer from anxiety and OCD in general (I'm in therapy and I usually have a well-functioning life despite this). I worried that I would not love the second cat, but I ended up loving him and becoming attached. He was so smelly and he stunk his way into my heart. I miss him so much and I can't stop crying. My partner cried too but he feels like we made the right decision. I feel like theres a hole in my heart and the house feels so empty now. I keep thinking that all the things that were problems were just in my head, but I could just be going through the motions of making a hard decision.
We felt burdened by the unexpected changes. I read that two cats are better than one, that cats are social creatures, and I wanted to give my soul cat a companion. She did not like this. We did a slow intro, separated them and fed them by the door, put up baby gates and screen doors, bought an extra cat tree and spaces for the new cat to hide. I think we should have left the door closed for more days, but our resident cat seemed interested in going into the room and vice versa. Honestly, I was a mess and could have done this better. I let them hang out occasionally together in the room and although she would hiss and swat at him, things never got serious. He didn't care how much she hissed or swatted him, he just wanted to be around her and follow her around. We eventually just let him have free roam of the house after some site swapping and a couple days of looking at each other through the gate, but kept him in his safe room when we were asleep or if we went out. I could tell that my resident cat was just tolerating him. She's 2 and he's 10 months old and he wanted to play all the time. She's a very playful cat with us but didn't want to play with him. Once in a while they started chasing each other but it would often end in hissing. She would walk over and attack him and hiss for no reason. I think that things were slowly getting better between them but I was too emotionally/mentally exhausted to try the slow intro all over again and to wait it out.
I just felt like I wouldn't have been able to handle the responsibility and the changes. When I tried to play with them both, she would just watch from afar or walk away, as he's too fast and strong and she's very slow at playing. I had to play with her in a separate room. I was hoping they would at least be able to play with the same feather wand so that I didn't have to add extra play sessions during the day. I was already struggling with playing with my resident cat multiple times a day and wanted her to have a friend to play with. I thought she would have loved that since her foster home told me that she got along with their resident cat and chased and wrestled him. I guess I underestimated how comfortable she made herself here, and how territorial she became. The second cat starts biting and scratching (not in a malicious way) if he doesn't get his energy out, and I wasn't sure that I could keep up with adding extra play for both of them separately into the day. He also gets extremely affectionate when he's pent up and that was hard for me to deal with when I was trying to sleep but he would constantly head butt me and nuzzle my face. I tried to let him sleep wherever he wanted two nights, and he had zoomies all over the bedroom. He wants to chase my resident cat at night but she doesn't really like this. This isn't something I deal with my resident cat as she just goes to sleep with us. He is very large for 10 months old and I think it didn't register in my head how much of a kitten he really is. I didn't want to keep our bedroom door closed or my resident cat wouldn't be able to sleep with me. The only solution would be to confine him to one room at night but that felt so cruel as a long term idea. They would eat each others food and I tried to resolve it by putting the new cat with his food in the safe room, but he refuses to eat if we don't sit there and watch him eat. My cat has a different diet and it was frustrating having to monitor meal times. The hardest change of all was my soul cat's behavior. She is my emotional support animal and we are both bonded to each other. It was killing me that she wouldn't sleep next to me much anymore or hang out with me. She was a lot less affectionate and vocal and I could feel her drifting away. I sensed she would just fade into the background and tolerate things as she's an adaptable cat. If she saw him sleeping next to me or in her spot, she would just leave. I couldn't handle not knowing when and if things would go back to normal between the two of us. The new cat wanted to sleep next to me and I moved him aside because I was afraid that she would feel betrayed. I feel so guilty for doing that, he doesn't deserve that. I was afraid to keep him around for longer under this uncertainty because I had already become attached and didn't want the pain to be worse 2 months (or even more) out if things didn't normalize. This all created too much anxiety and stress for me and made me want things to go back to normal. I try to live a very intentional life and I couldn't see the point in keeping around this sweet, loving, affectionate baby boy if my cat didn't care for him, and if it was going to be so difficult and mentally challenging for me. I was keeping my partner in a state of limbo too because he didn't know whether we were keeping him or not. I hadn't cared for a second cat for myself, and this decision was solely for my resident cat. So I made the decision in everyone's best interest.
We decided to give him back to the rescue as they have high adoption rates and I'm sure he will be adopted very quickly. He wasn't even there for a day when we took him. There are so many people waiting in the rescue's waiting room for cats. I want him to go to a family that is sure about him, thats is so excited about a new cat, where he could get the adequate play and attention he deserves. Maybe there's someone out there who needs an emotional support animal of their own and I'm denying them that. I didn't want to make him this "extra" in our lives that I would have to challenge myself through just for the sake of keeping him. He's more than just a challenge, he's a living creature. I have so many things I am trying to do right now like plan my wedding, get a job, make friends in this new state I'm living in, chase the things I've wanted to do for myself that I've put on the backburner. I realized how much of myself I had neglected over the past few years and I was trying to fill that void with things like a second cat. Maybe I got him not just for my resident cat, but also because I was trying to bring something new to a life I was feeling deeply unhappy with. I felt burdened by the additional responsibilities. If my cat seemed happy with this new addition I would have felt so much better. But it seemed like I had only subtracted from her life. My partner was afraid to keep bonding with the new cat because I was so uncertain. Even he felt uncertain about keeping him as he didn't care for a second cat, but was trying to make me happy. He's already working overtime and I felt like I was putting him through additional stress. He got quickly attached to the second cat as well and I didn't want to hurt him more with this uncertainty. I felt like I was keeping the new cat in a situation that wasn't right for anyone, despite how much we loved him and felt attached to him. We both cried returning him.
But now I miss him so much. I keep thinking that I could have put the extra effort in. I could find the extra playtime, I could sit with him while he eats. I could give him more love. Maybe I could fight through my anxiety and accept that my relationship with my soul cat would be different. The house feels so empty. It feels so still. I don't know how much of my reasons were in my head vs real. I know I'm speaking from a place of pain, sadness and guilt. And maybe I'm only feeling these things now that he's gone. He was just a baby and I feel horrible that I returned him. I don't know anymore if I made the right decision. I've been crying for the last 24 hours.

2023.06.05 20:55 xo0Taika0ox Where can I find learning resources for my autistic sister?

Without getting to into it, I recently took over day to day care of my non-verbal autistic sister. She's aged out of the system and while I am trying to get her in a day program, I am looking for learning/enrichment resources/worksheets for her to do during the day so she isn't bored, continues her skills.
She seems to have decent reading comprehension (1st to 2nd grade?), knows her numbers and cents, though adding is iffy. Not great with abstract. Does word searches, mazes, and such.
Any resources would be great.

2. Deciding to Pursue UPSC CSE

Deciding whether UPSC CSE is the right path for you requires careful consideration and self-reflection using C-A-R S-E-T.
Consider if you have a genuine desire to serve the nation, make a positive impact on society, and contribute to the betterment of the country through public service.
Assess your strengths, skills, and aptitudes. Consider if you possess the necessary qualities for civil services, such as analytical thinking, leadership abilities, effective communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work under pressure.

Seek Guidance and Advice Speak to current or former civil servants, mentors, or individuals who have attempted UPSC CSE; or are/were in service. Seek their guidance and insights into the challenges, rewards, and realities of a career in civil services. Their experiences can help you gain a deeper understanding of what to expect.

3.4 Effective note-making techniques
  1. Keep it concise: Focus on capturing the key points and essential information. Avoid lengthy sentences and unnecessary details. Use bullet points, headings, and subheadings to structure your notes and make them easy to scan and review.
  2. Use abbreviations and symbols: Develop a set of abbreviations and symbols to represent commonly used words or phrases. This saves time and space while taking notes. For example, use arrows (→) for "leads to," abbreviations like "govt" for government, or "&" for "and."
  3. Highlight and underline: Use highlighters or underline important keywords, phrases, or facts to draw attention to critical information. This makes it easier to quickly review and revise key points.
  4. Draw diagrams and flowcharts: Visual representations like diagrams, flowcharts, or mind maps can help in understanding and retaining complex concepts. Use arrows, boxes, and connectors to illustrate relationships between different ideas or components.
  5. Use colors and different fonts: Incorporate colors or different fonts to visually differentiate between headings, subheadings, and content. This makes your notes more visually appealing and aids in organization and quick reference.
  6. Summarize and rephrase: Instead of copying content verbatim, try to summarize and rephrase information in your own words. This process enhances understanding and retention. Focus on capturing the essence of the content rather than every single detail.
  7. Include examples and case studies: Supplement your notes with relevant examples, case studies, and illustrations. This helps in better comprehension and application of concepts during revision and while answering exam questions.
  8. Create separate sections for different subjects/topics: Maintain separate notebooks or sections for each subject or topic. This helps in keeping your notes organized and easily accessible. It also allows you to review specific subjects independently.
  9. Use headings and subheadings: Use clear headings and subheadings to categorize and structure your notes. This makes it easier to locate specific information and navigate through your notes during revision.
  10. Regularly review and revise your notes: Set aside regular time for revisiting and updating your notes. Reviewing your notes frequently ensures that the information stays fresh in your memory and helps you identify areas that need further clarification or revision.
Remember, note-making is a personal process, and you should develop a system that works best for you. Experiment with different techniques (Cornell, Outlining, Mapping, Charting, Sentence), formats, and organization methods to find what suits your learning style and aids your comprehension and revision process.

4. Preliminary Exam

The Preliminary exam is the first stage of the selection process. It consists of two papers: General Studies Paper-I (GS Paper-I) and General Studies Paper-II (CSAT Paper-II). Here is an overview of the Prelims exam:

1/3rd Negative Marking
Nature of questions: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs)

It's important to note that the marks obtained in the Prelims exam are considered for qualifying purposes only. The score of the Prelims is not added to the final merit list. The objective of the Prelims is to shortlist candidates for the Main examination based on a predetermined cutoff.
How to prepare
  1. Familiarize yourself with the exam pattern and syllabus of both GS Paper-I and Paper-II. Understand the weightage of each topic and the type of questions asked in the exam.
  2. Go through PYQs to understand the trends, the difficulty level, and the areas that are frequently asked. This will give you insights into the exam pattern and help you identify important topics.
  3. Develop a study plan that covers the entire syllabus, allocating sufficient time to each subject and topic. Make a timetable and stick to it, ensuring regular and consistent study hours.
  4. Choose reliable and comprehensive study materials for each subject. Refer to textbooks, NCERT books, and other recommended resources.
Importance of PYQs and Mock Tests (PYQs >> Mocks)
Solving mock tests and previous years' question papers allows you to evaluate your exam readiness. Mock tests and PYQs provide valuable insights into the exam pattern, structure, and types of questions asked in the UPSC CSE Prelims.
Mock tests help you assess your knowledge and skills. By analyzing your performance, you can identify your strengths and weaknesses in different subjects and topics. This helps you focus your preparation on areas that need improvement, optimizing your study plan.
By solving these papers, you become familiar with the format of the exam and gain confidence in tackling different question styles. It also helps in time management. It won't be an exaggeration if we say that PYQs can help you clear prelims with ease.

5. Main Examination

The Main examination consists of a written exam comprising nine papers, out of which two are qualifying in nature, and the remaining seven are considered for the ranking. Here is the structure and syllabus of the Main exam:
  1. Paper-A: One of the Indian languages (qualifying in nature) This paper tests your proficiency in one of the scheduled languages mentioned in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. You need to choose one language from the given list.
  2. Paper-B: English (qualifying in nature) This paper tests your understanding of English language and comprehension skills.
  3. Essay (Paper-I): You are required to write two essays, each consisting of 1,000-1,200 words. The topics are given from a wide range of subjects and require analytical and critical thinking.
  4. General Studies I (Paper-II): Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society.
  5. General Studies II (Paper-III): Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.
  6. General Studies III (Paper-IV): Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management.
  7. General Studies IV (Paper-V): Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
  8. Optional Subject - Paper I (Paper-VI): You have to choose one optional subject from the list provided by UPSC. Each subject has two papers (Paper I and Paper II).
  9. Optional Subject - Paper II (Paper-VII): The second paper of the chosen optional subject.
In order to adequately prepare for your studies, it is crucial to refer to the specific wording and content outlined in the syllabus. Let's take an example from the UPSC GS-1 syllabus, which includes the topic "Effects of globalization on Indian society." This particular aspect of the syllabus encompasses various dimensions such as the impact of globalization on women, children, older individuals, culture, and crime in India. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly prepare for this section by exploring all possible dimensions mentioned. To ensure you cover the required topics, it is advisable to keep a copy of the syllabus for reference.
Ethics broadly comprise two parts. Section A ( Theory) and Section B ( Case studies)
Section A of the General Studies IV (Paper-V) in the UPSC Main examination focuses on theoretical aspects related to fundamental values and concepts. It explores the meaning of various words such as integrity, ethics, morality, beliefs, and value systems.
An important subsection within Section A is "foundational values for civil services." This part delves into the core values expected from civil servants, including integrity, impartiality, neutrality, objectivity, dedication to public service, empathy, tolerance, and compassion towards marginalized sections of society.
This section holds immense significance in the syllabus, not only for Section A and case studies but also for your future career as a civil servant. It is crucial to prepare this portion thoroughly as it forms the basis of your ethical conduct and professional responsibilities once you are selected for civil services.

  6. Body Language and Communication: Pay attention to your body language, maintain eye contact, sit upright, and speak clearly and confidently. Use appropriate language and be respectful to the panel members.

More on DAF
Do not include unnecessary hobbies without realizing the consequences. As a result, You have to spend a lot of time preparing answers for irrelevant information, which could have potentially put you in trouble during the interview.
It is crucial to consult a senior or someone experienced before filling your DAF. More often than not, a significant portion of your interview is based on the information provided in the DAF. You will be asked numerous questions on specific aspects of your DAF that the panel found interesting.
Being honest is essential, but it is equally important to be smart. Include only those details that can be easily prepared from an interview point of view. Focus on adding things you are confident about and have thoroughly prepared. Not being able to answer something from your DAF can create a wrong impression.
If possible, consider filling out a rough DAF at the beginning of your UPSC preparation and then develop your hobbies and personality accordingly throughout the course of your preparation.

Ultimately, the decision to join a coaching institute for UPSC CSE preparation depends on your individual learning style, financial capacity, and availability of time. It is possible to crack the exam without coaching, but if you believe that structured guidance, peer learning, and personalized support would benefit you, joining a coaching institute can be a viable option.

Self-Motivation and Discipline
Self-study requires self-motivation and discipline. It helps you cultivate these essential qualities, which are crucial for success in the exam. By setting goals, managing your time effectively, and staying focused, you develop a strong work ethic that prepares you for the challenges ahead. When you engage in self-study, you have the opportunity to dive deep into concepts and develop a thorough understanding. You can spend more time on complex topics, explore different resources, and seek clarification when needed. This promotes a strong foundation of knowledge and enhances your conceptual clarity. Regular self-evaluation allows you to assess your progress, identify areas of improvement, and fine-tune your study approach.

9. Exam-Day Strategies and Tips

Dos on the day of the exam
  1. Get a good night's sleep
  2. Eat a healthy breakfast
  3. Arrive early at the exam center
  4. Carry essential documents
  5. Stay calm and positive
  6. Read instructions carefully
Don'ts on the day of the exam:
  1. Don't study new topics
  2. Don't discuss the exam with others
  3. Don't panic over difficult questions
  4. Don't rush through the exam
  5. Don't carry prohibited items
  6. Don't compare yourself to others
Time management during the exam
Quickly skim through the entire question paper to get an overview of the questions and their difficulty level. This will help you prioritize and allocate time accordingly.
Divide the available time among different sections based on their weightage and your comfort level. Allocate more time to sections that carry more marks or where you are stronger.
Assign specific time limits to each question or set of questions based on their complexity and marks. This will help you stay on track and avoid spending too much time on a single question.
If you encounter a particularly difficult question or one that is taking up too much time, it's okay to skip it and come back to it later if you have time remaining. Focus on answering the questions you can handle efficiently first.
There are breaks scheduled during the exam, use them wisely. Take a quick mental and physical break, but avoid engaging in lengthy discussions or distractions that may consume precious time.
Dealing with exam anxiety and stress
One of the best ways to alleviate exam anxiety is to be well-prepared. Maintain a consistent study routine, cover the syllabus comprehensively, and revise thoroughly. Confidence in your preparation can significantly reduce anxiety. Break it down: Rather than getting overwhelmed by the entire syllabus, break it down into smaller, manageable portions. Create a study plan and set realistic goals for each study session. Focusing on one topic at a time can help reduce anxiety. Deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or listening to calming music can help you relax and reduce anxiety levels. Ensure you prioritize self-care. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and engage in physical activity. A healthy body and mind can better handle stress and anxiety. Develop a study schedule that allows for regular breaks and leisure activities. Effective time management can help reduce the pressure of last-minute cramming and provide a better balance in your routine.

10. Post-Exam and Result Analysis

Preliminary Exam Result: After the UPSC CSE Preliminary Exam, the result is usually declared within a few weeks. The result is published on the official UPSC website. It includes a list of candidates who have qualified for the Main Exam based on the cutoff marks set by the UPSC.
Main Exam Result: Once the Main Exam is conducted, the result is declared after a few months. The result is published on the UPSC website and includes the roll numbers of candidates who have qualified for the next stage, which is the Interview or Personality Test.
Final Result: The final result is declared after the completion of the Interview/Personality Test. It includes the names and ranks of candidates who have successfully cleared all the stages of the exam. The final result is published on the UPSC website and may also be published in leading newspapers.
Merit List: The final result is based on the total marks obtained by candidates in the Main Exam and the Interview/Personality Test. A merit list is prepared based on the overall performance, and candidates are ranked accordingly. The allotment of services is done based on the candidate's rank and preference.
Analyzing performance and identifying areas for improvement
Start by reviewing your exam scores and marks obtained in each section. Identify the areas where you performed well and areas where you struggled or scored lower. This will give you an initial understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. Based on your analysis, create a study plan that addresses your weak areas while also reinforcing your strengths. Allocate more time and effort to topics or subjects that need improvement. Break down your study plan into smaller, achievable targets to ensure consistent progress.
Strategies for preparing for subsequent attempts
Analyze your strengths and weaknesses, and use this self-assessment as a foundation for your subsequent preparation. Based on your analysis, pinpoint the subjects, topics, or specific areas where you need improvement. It could be conceptual understanding, answer writing, time management, or current affairs. Prioritize these areas and develop a targeted strategy to enhance your knowledge and skills. Reinforce your foundational knowledge by revisiting the basic concepts and fundamentals of each subject. Assess your time management skills and identify areas where you can improve. Consult mentors, teachers, or successful candidates who can provide guidance and valuable insights. Take care of your physical and mental well-being.

11. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is coaching necessary for UPSC CSE preparation? Coaching is not mandatory, but it can provide structured guidance, study materials, and mock tests. It can be helpful, especially for those who require additional support or prefer a classroom learning environment. However, self-study with the right resources and self-discipline can also lead to success.
What are the best books for UPSC CSE preparation? The choice of books may vary depending on the subject and individual preferences. Some popular books for UPSC CSE include NCERT textbooks, standard reference books by authors like Laxmikanth, M. Laxmikanth, Ramesh Singh, and Bipan Chandra, and newspapers like The Hindu for current affairs.
Can working professionals prepare for UPSC CSE? Yes, working professionals can prepare for UPSC CSE by managing their time effectively, creating a study plan, and dedicating focused hours to preparation. Utilize weekends, early mornings, and evenings for study. Balance work commitments with consistent preparation.

Clarifying misconceptions and providing guidance

Misconception: Only candidates from prestigious educational backgrounds can crack UPSC CSE. UPSC CSE is open to candidates from diverse educational backgrounds. It is the knowledge, aptitude, and dedication that matter more than the educational institution. With the right strategy, study materials, and consistent effort, anyone can succeed in the exam.
Misconception: UPSC CSE can be cleared on the first attempt without much preparation. UPSC CSE is a highly competitive exam that requires thorough preparation and dedication. While a few exceptional candidates may clear it on their first attempt, most aspirants require multiple attempts. Developing a long-term preparation strategy and consistent effort is key to success.
Misconception: Coaching institutes guarantee success in UPSC CSE. Coaching institutes can provide guidance, study materials, and mock tests, but they do not guarantee success. Success in UPSC CSE depends on individual effort, self-study, and consistent practice. Many candidates have cleared the exam without formal coaching. It's important to choose the right resources and adopt a disciplined approach to self-study.
Misconception: Memorizing information is enough for UPSC CSE. UPSC CSE tests conceptual understanding, analytical abilities, and application of knowledge. Mere memorization of facts and information is not enough. Focus on understanding concepts, connecting topics, and developing critical thinking skills. Practice answer writing and analyze previous years' question papers to enhance your application-based approach.
Misconception: Studying for long hours guarantees success. Study hours alone do not determine success. Quality of study matters more than quantity. Focus on effective time management, breaking down topics into manageable chunks, and setting realistic goals. Take regular breaks, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and prioritize self-care to ensure sustained productivity.
Misconception: English proficiency is mandatory for UPSC CSE. While UPSC CSE is conducted in English and Hindi, candidates do not need exceptional fluency in English. Basic proficiency in English is sufficient to understand and communicate effectively. Focus on improving language skills through reading, writing, and practicing answer writing.
Misconception: The optional subject is the key to success in UPSC CSE. The optional subject plays a significant role in the Main Examination, but it is not the sole determinant of success. A well-rounded preparation, including General Studies papers, current affairs, and essay writing, is equally important. Choose the optional subject based on your interest, aptitude, and availability of study materials.
Misconception: UPSC CSE is all about hard work, and luck plays no role. Hard work is essential for UPSC CSE, but luck can also play a role in certain aspects like question patterns, options in multiple-choice questions, etc. However, luck alone cannot guarantee success. Focus on consistent effort, smart preparation, and improving your skills and knowledge to maximize your chances of success.

2023.06.05 20:09 mcm8279 [Interview] Dr. Erin Macdonald Discusses Her Role As 'StarTrek' Science Consultant: "In one instance, she contributed to the exploration of dilithium, a fictional element central to the series' technology. By adding canonical explanations rooted in scientific concepts, she enhanced the depth and..."

"... believability. Additionally, she worked on an episode featuring a coronal mass ejection, introducing viewers to this real-world astronomical phenomenon within the context of Star Trek."

Quotes:
"[...]
The Role of a Science Consultant
As a science consultant, Dr. Macdonald works closely with the writers and showrunners of the Star Trek series. She helps answer scientific questions, provides input during brainstorming sessions, and edits scripts to ensure scientific accuracy. One of her key responsibilities is preventing common mistakes, such as confusing star systems with galaxies or misrepresenting astronomical phenomena. By maintaining scientific integrity, she helps create a more immersive and believable Star Trek universe.
Balancing Science and Fiction
One challenge Dr. Macdonald faces is striking the right balance between science and fiction. While she aims to ensure scientific accuracy, she acknowledges the importance of suspending disbelief in order to fully enjoy the storytelling experience. Sometimes, it's best to leave certain fantastical elements unexplained rather than risk losing the audience by over-explaining them. However, as technology advances, some concepts once deemed far-fetched in the series are becoming a reality, such as voice-activated computer systems and wearable technology.
[...]
The Role of a Science Consultant
When asked about the plausibility of certain Star Trek technologies, such as warp speed and the Borg, Dr. Macdonald explains the theoretical basis behind them. Warp drive, for instance, involves creating a bubble of spacetime around a ship, allowing it to travel faster than the speed of light. While the energy requirements for such technology remain a significant barrier, the underlying principles are grounded in scientific theory. Similarly, the Borg's integration of technology into biological organisms hints at the future possibilities of biotechnology
Inspiring Future Scientists
Star Trek's impact on inspiring people to pursue careers in science cannot be overstated. Dr. Macdonald recognizes the franchise's responsibility to uphold its legacy of inspiring scientific curiosity. With the introduction of Star Trek: Prodigy, a show aimed at younger audiences, Dr. Macdonald finds herself in a teaching role. Drawing on her background in education, she aims to explain complex scientific concepts in an accessible manner, hoping to ignite a passion for science in young viewers."

Key takeaways

  • With the power of AI, computers can perform tasks that used to require a human
  • Medicine, finance and customer service are now utilizing AI-based tools to improve operations
  • AI has recently started to impact other industries, like research and education, as professionals try to figure out how to best move forward with the new tools that have been released
Whether you’ve noticed it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) impacts every industry and almost every aspect of your life. AI-powered tools can now create legal documents, write reports and even teach you about a specific topic from a simple text prompt.
AI is even being used to assist with fraud detection, diagnose diseases and help with ensuring that you’re only shown programs that you’re interested in when you log in to your streaming service of choice.
We looked at AI's new role in medicine, finance and other industries to see how this technology is impacting the world—plus how to invest with and in AI.

What is computer learning all about?

Artificial intelligence is essentially about training computers to perform tasks that would typically be reserved for humans. AI programs have been developed to solve problems, make decisions and recognize speech patterns.
But what are examples of artificial intelligence that have improved our daily lives? Here are a few:
  • Voice recognition software: When you get lost, you rely on Siri on your phone to help you tap into the map for the best possible route. Or, when you want to put music on in your home, you might ask Alexa to play your favorite playlist.
  • Chatbots: While ChatGPT is getting a lot of buzz lately, we can’t ignore the significance of chatbots in customer service. AI fully powers companies like Lemonade for every aspect of the business, so you’re always dealing with a machine.
  • Streaming services: Platforms like Netflix rely on AI to filter recommendations to users based on their preferences.
AI is changing how the world works, and businesses can’t avoid operating without implementing some form of this technology.

The role of AI when it comes to medicine

The medical field has benefitted from AI since this space has required assistance regarding data management, scheduling and other aspects that improve the patient care experience. According to IBM, AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of modern healthcare because the algorithms are being utilized to assist medical professionals in clinical environments and with continued research in the field.
Here are the main ways that AI is impacting medicine right now:
  • Precision medicine: AI can assist with health outcomes since the algorithm can assess large amounts of data about a person’s medical history to determine the best treatment plan.
  • Diagnosing conditions and issues: Machine learning improves diagnosing conditions and various health issues to catch severe problems before it’s too late.
  • Assisting with surgeries: AI can help with preoperative planning and ensure that surgeons follow all of the steps during the procedure.
  • Administrative tasks: AI-based software can help with administrative tasks like staff scheduling or insurance payments, maintaining records and reducing the workload for medical professionals.
In a field where the labor force has traditionally been overworked, it’s crucial to have the assistance of machine learning to help with the patient experience. We also can’t forget how AI can be used to offer chatbots for 24/7 support when the doctor’s office is closed.

The role of AI in finance

The finance industry has benefited from AI since this space has many complex algorithms. There's also plenty of decision-making that involves considering different factors to come to a conclusion.
Here are the primary roles of AI when it comes to the finance industry.

Loan application processing

Financial companies are relying on AI to help with loan applications. Since this field is traditionally plagued with documentation and paperwork, it’s a daunting process for a human being.
Companies can offer better services to customers through AI since the computer can go through data faster by looking at the credit history to determine the likelihood of a person defaulting on their loan.

Fraud detection

Financial institutions are relying on AI for assistance with fraud detection. Banks like J.P. Morgan Chase have doubled the fraud detection rate by using proprietary AI algorithms to flag any transactions that could be unauthorized.

Algorithmic trading

In the past, you would have to deal with a stock broker if you wanted to invest your money in the stock market. Now, you can rely on AI to handle your investments for you so that you don’t have to worry about market fluctuations. Proponents of AI in this area have noted that the algorithms could make investing decisions quicker than any human being.
If you want to see the power of AI in finance, you don’t have to look further than Q.ai, where AI-powered tools handle your investments for you. You can use an Investment Kit that exposes you to various securities. Plus, you can also turn on Portfolio Protection to cover stock market volatility and protect yourself from losses.
AI also assists with improving banking experiences since chatbots can help customers 24/7. Additionally, algorithms are being used to recommend specific products based on a customer’s spending habits.

The role of AI in various other industries

While the sectors mentioned above are reaping substantial benefits from AI, there’s no denying the importance of machine learning in a few additional fields.

Search engines and the online experience

If you’ve ever tried to look something up online, you know how frustrating it can be to find a satisfactory result. When you search for a topic on Google, you have to analyze different results and filter out between multiple websites. On top of all of this, you are shown many ads.
There are legitimate concerns that chatbots could one day replace search engines as people look for more accurate responses.

Education industry

AI can’t be discussed without including the education industry. It was recently revealed that AI-powered chatbots could pass entrance exams for higher education. In fact, a Wharton professor declared that ChatGPT could pass the MBA program's final exam.
Unfortunately, there are worries that plagiarism could increase due to AI. As a result, tools are coming out to determine if ChatGPT has created a piece of work. For example, a college student created GPTZero to combat plagiarism, and the New York City Department of education was one of the first to ban the tool on its networks.
Another way that computer learning impacts the education industry is through research. The world’s largest academic publisher, Springer Nature, just announced its policy on using AI-powered software regarding research. ChatGPT and other AI tools can't be credited as an author, but scientists can utilize AI to help write or generate research topics.
The biggest criticism of using AI-powered software for scientific papers is that the computer can’t be held accountable for what’s published and can’t respond to other scientists looking to question the work.

How should you be investing?

According to PwC, the AI industry could have a global contribution to the economy of $15.7 trillion by 2030. It’s also believed that AI software revenue could reach $100 billion globally by 2025. That said, it’s apparent that it’s worth considering investing in the field of AI.
However, it’s also worth noting that it’s riskier than ever to invest in this field as many of the largest tech companies have been proponents of AI, but shares in these companies have significantly dropped due to macroeconomic factors as fears of a global recession continue.
The good news is that Q.ai takes the guesswork out of investing if you want a hands-off approach. You don’t have to look any further to see the power of AI in action since Q.ai uses AI to offer investment options for those who don’t want to be tracking the stock market daily. Check out the Emerging Tech Kit if you’re a proponent of innovative technology.

The bottom line

We only scratched the surface when it comes to the importance of artificial intelligence in the fields of medicine, finance and various other industries. It’s impossible to attempt to predict what kind of revolutionary tools will be released that could simplify complex tasks into a text prompt.
You can invest in artificial intelligence in many ways, but do your research and consider the risks involved before getting started.
