2023.03.30 05:14 ThrowAway7s2 The "off the cuff" column on February 8, 1972 included a remark about abortion which was countered by two letter writers to the Door County Advocate

Balsam Lake is near the Twin Cities. The letter's heading was chosen by the Advocate and was prejudicial against her along religious/political lines, so the editor for the Advocate must have disagreed. Had the editor agreed, he could have titled it "Justice" instead. Lester W. Pfister was a WWII vet who lived in Sturgeon Bay. His closing remark about "people who study World History" could relate in some way to his service.] https://archive.co.door.wi.us/jsp/RcWebImageViewer.jsp?doc_id=1e8fc801-90a4-4104-8e86-19a1ea0947dc/wsbd0000/20170120/00000180&pg_seq=18 February 25, 1972 VENGEANCE I cannot let your statement in a recent Advocate go unchallenged. I find no difficulty in understanding why people who argue against abortion would approve of capital punishment. Life is life at any age. Life is man's most precious possession and cannot be restored once it has been taken. Justice demands a penalty to fit the crime. A person who deliberately destroys another person's life deserves to die. My only authority is the Word of God and God demands justice and righteousness. Read the 20th chapter of Exodus and the 20th chapter of Leviticus, using "The Living Bible" paraphrase for clarity, and you will find many candidates for capital punishment. To list a few: "Anyone who kills a man shall be put to death," "Anyone who curses his parents shall be put to death." If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both shall be put to death. The penalty for homosexual acts is death to both parties (our society wants to condone their behaviour). The Bible says they have brought it upon themselves. Nothing specific is said about abortion in Scripture. Perhaps it was not a problem at that time. If God's laws were obeyed would it be a problem now? How foolish for people to think that an act legalized by human courts would be approved by God. Jesus said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind... Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. The whole of the Law...depends on these two commandments." One who loves God and his neighbor will not steal, will not kill and will not commit adultery. John said in his Epistle, "It is only when we obey God's laws that we can be quite sure that we really know him. The man who claims to know God but does not obey his laws is not only a liar but lives in self-delusion. Obedience is the test of whether we really live "in God" or not." If God would demand a death penalty for the murderer, the adulterer and the homosexual what do you think the penalty would be for the abortionist or the woman who wants the life within her destroyed? The fact is "she brought it upon herself." MRS. IRVIN ALEN Balsam Lake, Wis. https://archive.co.door.wi.us/jsp/RcWebImageViewer.jsp?doc_id=1e8fc801-90a4-4104-8e86-19a1ea0947dc/wsbd0000/20170120/00000183&pg_seq=15 March 9, 1972 NOT THE SAME There is a big difference in the thinking of liberals and conservatives. In your Off the Cuff column you stated that life is life and to a large extent it is true but There is a world of difference between abortion and capital punishment. Abortion is the taking of an innocent life while capital punishment is the removal from society not of human beings but of vicious animals who have forfeited the right to life. Every murderer should be executed within one year of the day of conviction not to punish them but to remove them from society so that other innocent people will be safe. In movies, stories and in songs we have always glorified the gunslinger and ignored the peace officer and law abiding citizen and in this century we are only harvesting the foolishness we have been sowing for years. A democracy can only survive if nearly all of its people exercise self control and self discipline and when these have become a thing of the past among too many people of a nation then you can be sure that such a nation will soon be controlled by a dictator. It has happened to several nations in this century and it will happen to us if we do not wake up and begin to punish criminals instead of coddling them for any government that can not control or will not control its criminals is on its way out. It will be replaced by a government that will control its people. One has only to look at Russia to see that this is true. This is why the Red government will survive when democracy will be only a memory. I often wonder about people who study World History. They are well educated and have spent so many hours of their time studying it but have learned so little from it. LESTER W. PFISTER submitted by ThrowAway7s2 to DoorCountyALT [link] [comments] |

2023.03.30 04:42 According-Value-6227 His Dark Materials / Harry Potter Crossover
This post is related to Project Vigilant / P.V, an alt-history / sci-fi / fantasy and fan-fiction mega-crossover and world building project that I have been working on since 2018. If you are unfamiliar with Project Vigilant, you can familiarize yourself with it
here.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harry Potter has recently been incorporated into Project Vigilant, I wanted to incorporate HP into PV for quite awhile but couldn't figure how to do so til recently. I would also like to state for the record that although I admire HP as a franchise, I have absolutely no love for J.K Rowling and I do not own any HP Merchandise.
That aside, the Project Vigilant version of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World exhibits some substantial alterations and differences to H.P Canon in order to both make it compatible with the rest of P.V and to adhere to my own personal tastes. I'm still working on a list of all the differences P.V-HP has to HP Canon but one difference I have solidified and would like to share is that the P.V-HP saga features a crossover between it and Phillip Pullman's
"His Dark Materials" which has been a part of P.V for about 3 years now.
In Project Vigilant, Will Parry ( the secondary protagonist of HDM ) is re-named to Will Potter (
full name: William Albus James Potter ) He is the son of Harry Potter and a "muggle" named Elaine who is an alternate version of the cafe girl that Harry met in The Half-Blood Prince (
movie ) which takes place in 1996. In P.V, After the Second Wizarding War ( which took place in 1998 ) Harry, post graduation, returned to that cafe and apologized to Elaine for never meeting up with her after work more than a year ago, he simply told her that a complex mess of things happened to him and that they were over and he'd like to go out with her if she was willing. Elaine, admiring Harry's effort to track her down after more than a year's worth of time to apologize, accepted Harry's offer. They had a date that went very well and the rest is history.
Elaine eventually learned about the Wizarding World and Harry's status as a hero. They were married in 2002 and Will was born on the 68th of Winter, 2004 (
February 6th, 2004 in real world time ).
In 2006, Harry, then operating as an Auror went missing during a joint-mission between the British Ministry of Magic and the Arcane Congress of the United States of America ( ACUSA ) to apprehend a fugitive Death Eater. There was nothing to indicate that Harry had died and the British Ministry of Magic declared him M.I.A Indefinitely.
Will began to attend Hogwarts in the Autumn of 2015. To absolutely no one's surprise, he was sorted into Gryffindor. What was surprising that night was that Scorpius Malfoy ( Draco's son ) was also sorted into Gryffindor, making him the first Malfoy to not be in Slytherin. Will and Scorpius would become friends.
Like in HDM, Elaine began to develop paranoid-schizophrenia at some point. Will did not want her be institutionalized and was able to get her moved to a muggle village close to Hogwarts, that way he could easily support her on weekends and be in immediate reach of her during the Summer.
The Events of PV-HDM interrupt Will's 5th year at Hogwarts. Currently, I'm not sure how exactly Will gets to the Cittagazze Universe or how his ability to use magic would affect his travels with Lyra. Harry is also supposed to replace John Parry but I'm not sure if I want him to have the same fate as John due to his greater character depth.
William Potter is modeled off of Amir Wilson and his personality is largely identical to Amir's portrayal of Will Parry. Will Potter inherited poor eyesight from his father and thus wears glasses, Will also has a sizable birthmark on the upper left side of his forehead. This birthmark is actually derived from Harry's legendary scar as in P.V, the killing curse actually has different "degrees" and at it's highest degree, it works by destroying every layer of the human body down to the soul, kinda like a bullet going through several layers of armor. Voldemort's failed killing curse on Harry not only left a scar on his head but also his DNA so the damage can be inherited. These two things aside however, Will largely takes after his mother.
Overall, while I have Wizard Will kinda figured out, I'm not sure how the events of HDM would be affected by his ability to use magic. My attempts to get help from this on HPfanfiction and HisDarkMaterials have failed as both fandoms seem to be hostile to one another. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

2023.03.30 04:33 CranberryEconomy6044 42 [M4F] central michigan, sober seeking same. Kinda spooky
Hello. I'm making a post here I've been looking for a while and I've talked to a few people but haven't found my person yet.
I'm 42 I live alone with my dog. Never married, no kids, little family and non religious. I'm sober but I am 420 friendly. Slightly adhd and i have a variety of hobbies including cooking, movies, video games, sculpting, painting, drones, I want to start with stained glass soon. And anything outdoors in the sun or water for sure! I would consider myself a logical person over feelings. I want to believe in as many true things as possible and as few false things as possible. I love science and thinking about physics and philosophy.
I have somehow carved out a fairly simple life for myself. I work in a bakery in a college town. I work 3rd shift a few nights a week. Come home, play some Warcraft, watch some TV, do some cleaning, rinse, and repeat. I am currently in the process of remodeling my grandfather's home, who recently passed and left it's in my possession.
Physically, I'm 5 ft 11 in. I weigh 173 lb. I'm not overweight, but I have a little extra but I'm working on. Recently lost 60 lb after quitting drinking a year and a half ago. I've always felt fairly attractive but also felt little attention. But I'm shy af so that doesn't help. I've got tattoos, quite a few. My forearms are covered, and I want more. I would consider myself slightly emo/spooky. I think there should be more than one Halloween.
Just thought I'd throw this in there. I was on SSRI anti-depressants for a while. And it's sort of killed my libido somewhat and it never quite recovered. I make do and things work like they should. But I'm not 18 anymore. It takes my while to warm up and be comfortable with someone.
I've been in a handful of relationships but I can honestly not tell whether I've ever been loved. So it's very important for me to find someone that wants to be with me. I would like to continue running my bakery and living in this area I'm in. It's a nice rural country area. College town. Geographical anomaly in that it's 40 minutes from everywhere. I would like someone who is introverted like myself. Doesn't mind lazy nights in. Enjoys working in the outside in the garden with me or just wants to be a homebody. Really love trying new food and restaurants, going to movies, live music, disc golf, being at the lake is a happy place.
My taste in music is truly schizophrenic. I grew up listening to heavy and death metal. But in the 2000s I started going to Rave parties and grew a huge appreciation for electronic music. I even enjoy some bluegrass. I love Depeche mode, of monsters and men, ghost, Fiona Apple , Odessa , Meg Myers recently , The Cure , Mr kitty, disturbed, Phil Collins , John denver, Sarah McLachlan, type o negative, the misfits, deadmau5, a bunch of various one-hit wonders. '80s music Etc. I do not like is post 90s rap or modern pop and country
This is me And another :) I feel like I'm rambling. If this post is up shoot me a message and we'll exchange pictures and maybe get a dialogue going. I hope to hear from you.
edit: I have posted here before. using my real account. Things got weird, so I will use this account until trust is built ;)

2023.03.30 03:59 FriedChicken90 Can my US born child legally have two last names?
Hey Reddit. I'm in dire need of some help here. Will try to keep it short:
-My wife and I are both of Asian descent (different countries). We both live in the US and I am a citizen. She is a green card holder (she wanted to keep her Chinese passport for personal reasons).
-She is due in 6 months and the topic of names has come up, In my family's history and origin country's culture, the child almost always takes the dad's last name. It's simply tradition.
-In my wife's origin country's culture, while it's consistent with that of mine, they have become more liberal.
-Long story short, she and her family have drawn their line in the stand saying they want the child to have her last name. My family is against this.
-My wife and her side said they're willing to compromise and give a hyphenated last name. So like this: FirstName MyLastName-HerLastName (e.g. John Kim-Chen)
-My family thinks the hyphenated last name is even worse.
-I did some research and it seems that it might(?) be possible to have MULTIPLE last names? So it's almost like: John Kim AND John Chen - used interchangeably - per the birth certificate/passport etc.
IS THIS ALLOWED???
PS: As far as my opinion goes, all else equal, I do wish my wife would just be fine with John taking my last name. But this is very personal to her. But this is very personal to my family too that they take the dad's last name. Oh em gee I hate Asian cultures and mindsets sometimes.... Anyways, this isn't really a debate of what's right or wrong. I want to know if it's legally allowed?

Skeletal remains found in Nevada's Lake Mead last year have been identified as a Las Vegas man who drowned nearly five decades ago.
The Clark County Office of the CoroneMedical Examiner said the remains belong to 39-year-old
Donald Smith, who was reported missing in April 1974, according to the Associated Press and
The Guardian.
Smith vanished in the Colorado River reservoir behind
Hoover Dam, the Coroner's office said, per the AP.
A diver discovered the remains on Oct. 17, 2022, in Lake Mead's
Callville Bay, according to CNN and FOX affiliate KVVU-TV.

The Clark County Office of the CoroneMedical Examiner did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
At least six sets of remains, including Smith's, have been found in Lake Mead since May 2022, according to CNN and
The Guardian. The remains began appearing as the lake dried up amid the recent drought.
Officials have also identified the remains of 42-year-old
Thomas Erndt, who reportedly drowned in 2002, per the AP and
The Guardian. His remains were found on May 7, 2022.

On May 1, a body with a gunshot wound was found inside a barrel, according to CNN. The victim has not been identified.

2023.03.30 02:08 bluelightning1234 My first big one bag trip: 12 days in Guatemala and Boston!
I recently got into one-bagging after stumbling across this subreddit in early January. I found myself always overpacking and wanted to experience the freedom some of you all talk about that comes with minimalist packing. I wanted to chronicle my experience to hear some feedback and advice on things I could potentially make more efficient/convenient and also hopefully help in the same way the posts I’ve read on here have helped me.
I recently went on my first one bag trip longer than a weekend: 12 days to Guatemala (8 days) and Boston (4 days). I hope to do month long trips this summer with one bag so doing 12 days, especially while dealing with vastly different climates, was a good way to test my one-bag setup.
The bag I used was the Topo Designs Core Pack, which I bought on sale a few months ago. It unfortunately seems like it is no longer available on their website, but I think this bag is absolutely perfect. I bought it looking for a pack that can be taken on most airlines as a personal item. I flew Spirit to Guatemala and United to Boston. The Topo Core Pack is 18in x 13in x 8.5in, which is within the personal item guidelines of Spirit, but is larger than the personal item guidelines of United. Nevertheless, I got through without any issues and was able to put the pack under the seat in front of me with no problems, even while fully packed. The pack has a capacity of 25L but I think it fits far more than other 25L packs I’ve seen. Other huge benefits of the bag that came in clutch for me were large, flexible water bottle pockets that I was able to use to pack more things, as well as water bladder compatibility in the laptop pocket, which I was able to use on an overnight hike I did in Guatemala.
Another big decision over the last few weeks was trying to figure out the elusive one-shoe that worked for me. I wanted a shoe that could be worn on relatively strenuous hikes but could also be worn day-to-day around the city for walking, going out, etc, while also being fairly unassuming. I came across the Danner Trail 2650 which I found on sale for around 60% off
here and it fit the bill pretty well for me. It’s not the prettiest shoe on the rack but it did the job perfectly for me: super comfortable, versatile and wearable for most occasions in the all-black colorway, and easy to clean. I wore these shoes everyday for 12 days with no problem, including on a very difficult 10 hour hike in Guatemala, and they held up beautifully. Especially at the price point with the sale, I highly recommend. I was looking into Lems Trailheads or some Astral options, but ultimately chose not to go with them because I didn’t think I would have enough time to get used to the low/no drop shoes. I do want to eventually try them though.
Also relevant: due to the large yellow abyss that is the main compartment of the Topo Core Pack, I used
Tripped Packing Cubes off Amazon for some organization. These were recommended as a cheaper alternative to Eagle Creek and they worked fine. I think I recommend them for the price point and the variety of cubes you get with one order. I also used two
Maxpedition cocoon pouches to carry my toiletries and electronics/chargers, which I bought off their BOGO deal a few weeks ago. They were super compact, easily packable, and maintained their form well, but they are pretty small, which I guess helped me trim my packing list.
Packing List: I did laundry once around the 5 day mark and again around the 10 day mark, mainly to more easily transport without mixing clean and dirty clothes. Would welcome any advice on how to deal with dirty clothes when one-bagging as I couldn’t really figure out a solid solution other than using a separate laundry bag (which came with the Tripped set) that I clipped onto my backpack.
For context, I needed to pack a good bit of cold weather clothing because I was doing an overnight hike in Guatemala, which would see below freezing temperatures at night, and was spending a few days in Boston in March, which was relatively cold.
- 7x underwear
- Could probably have gotten away with less + more frequent laundry; undecided about how to approach a month long trip though?
- 5x socks (trying to slowly transition to wool)
- 1 pair of long wool socks
- 2 pairs of long cotton socks
- 2 pairs of ankle cotton socks
- 7x shirts
- 2x plain cotton shirts
- 1x sleep shirt
- 1x button down going out shirt
- 1x long sleeve wool base layer for hike
- 1x long sleeve wool mid layer for hike + Boston
- 1x long sleeve waffle shirt
- 2x jackets
- 1x thick Orvis fleece
- 1x Arc’teryx Atom LT hoodie
- Borrowed this jacket and it's phenomenal. Want to get one of my own now.
- 4x pants
- 1x black chinos
- 1x Prana hiking pants
- 2x shorts for warm days/water activities
- Misc. cold weather things for hike
- Insulating gloves
- Ear muffs
- Beanie (didn’t use; probably redundant)
- Neck gaiter
- Toiletries (planned to just use soap at hostels or buy if needed)
- Travel size spray deodorant
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrush
- I bought a toothbrush holder off Amazon before leaving which I really did not like. Would appreciate any recommendations on how others hold their toothbrushes while traveling that is sanitary and convenient
- Mini Vaseline petroleum jelly
- Gillette razor
- Travel size shaving cream
- Hand sanitizer
- Electronics
- 15 in Dell XPS
- Laptop charger
- iPhone Charger
- Airpods
- Other miscellaneous
- CamelBak 3L water reservoir
- REI RFID neck wallet for passport, money, etc.
Some issues I faced/things I wish I had or did/questions I would appreciate insight on:
- I didn’t have a footwear option for beach/lake situations that could also double as shower shoes. Any suggestions for extremely packable sandal options for this use case?
- As mentioned above, I didn’t really know how to deal with dirty clothes while going in between cities and having clean clothes in my bag too.
- I took my laptop but didn’t end up using it at all. I will very likely not take my laptop again because of how much weight it ended up being and the fact that in any situation in which I may use it, I probably can figure out some sort of alternative.
- The Atom hoodie was easily packable, but I wore my thick Orvis fleece on the flight to Guatemala and didn’t really have space in my bag for it. However, it was quite warm in Guatemala so I ended up having to just wear it or hold it most of the time while in transit around the country. While it’s not that bad of a problem, I was curious if anyone had any thoughts/solutions on how to deal with bulky clothes, which you wore on the flight to avoid packing, that don’t make sense to wear at your destination.
- I bought some souvenirs in Guatemala to bring back. However, I didn’t really have space in my bag to bring these back, so I kind of cheated and sent them back with a friend. I think in the future, I need to leave some slack/open space in my bag to account for anything I may buy while there.
- I found myself wanting my own towel at times. Is a thin, packable, quick dry towel worth taking? What are some good options?
This is all I can think of for the moment, but all in all, one bag on this trip was unbelievably freeing and super convenient. Hard to imagine I will go back now. If anyone has any suggestions or pieces of advice, I’d love to hear them as I hope to hone my packing list for my future trips.

2023.03.30 01:23 OxyC377 Brookes ends Silverstone test fastest as Bennetts BSB season opener now beckons
| Double Bennetts British Superbike Champion Josh Brookes ended the final pre-season R&G Official Test at Silverstone by setting the pace for the FHO Racing BMW Motorrad team in the damp conditions, as the focus now turns to the opening round at the circuit on Easter weekend (April 7/8/9). Brookes’ benchmark time was set on the opening day of the test, but the Australian still topped the times on day two in the damper conditions. Brookes said: "It’s pretty obvious to say that finishing Silverstone on top of the times is pleasing for me, the team and everyone involved. We’ve been focusing mainly on the new engine as it reacts in a different way to the old one. Not that I have much understanding of the old one, but for the mechanics the BMW reacts differently with the new spec engine, so they have to go through a variety of changes to understand better how to set the engine breaking, as well as the throttle with the way it feels as I accelerate out of a turn. "There are some levels we have worked through to basically make the bike run efficiently and that’s more or less where we’ve spent most effort and time, and it’s those fundamentals of what we have to be able to progress later. So, once we get this work done, and to a point where I’m happy we can then focus on suspension, chassis positions and fine tune the other bits. "I guess luckily for us and the work we’ve had to do, you can do regardless of the weather and fortunately we’ve been able to make progress on this. We’ve improved the engine braking and the feeling of the throttle in my hand, which must be good, as we’ve gone fastest in what’s been very tricky conditions. As soon as we get some dry track, we can focus on more common changes such as suspension, but during the test we couldn’t really focus on anything else due to the conditions.” Kyle Ryde was 0.816s adrift of his championship rival onboard the leading LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha after topping the opening two tests ahead of next week’s opening round. Danny Buchan was third fastest on the timesheets despite crashing out unhurt in the final session of the test, but the SYNETIQ BMW rider’s time from yesterday put him narrowly ahead of McAMS Yamaha’s Jason O'Halloran on combined times. Peter Hickman completed the top five on the second FHO Racing BMW Motorrad M 1000 RR with Christian Iddon holding sixth on the Oxford Products Racing Ducati. Danny Kent’s time from the penultimate session moved him into seventh overall as the Lovell Kent Racing Honda team prepare for their debut races next weekend, just ahead of Ryan Vickers on the second LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha. Honda Racing UK’s Andrew Irwin and Bennetts BSB rookie Tim Neave completed the top ten for McAMS Yamaha. Official BSB Test - Combined results all classes Note: The old McGuinness seems to feel great on the stock Honda. Being just behind on Dean Harrison (who was out on his Superbike). From the 'real road racing' riders the pace from Josh Brookes, Peter Hickman, Alastair Seeley (also on a stock), and Davey Todd where the ones who where the most remarkable. The others like I said, John McGuinness because he was also on his stock bike. Happy everyone got his laps in Michael Dunlop, Nathan Harrison, Conor Cummins and James Hillier who was far behind the eight ball last TT on that Yamaha, but swinging your program around is always possible on 12 months and if they aren't to stubborn you can ask some things at "Ten Kate Racing" who used to build World Championship winning Honda's and are now into developing Yamaha parts. submitted by OxyC377 to RoadRacing [link] [comments] |
