Names of students who have graduated with a matriculation exam in Finland

2023.06.06 10:56 Skywhisker Names of students who have graduated with a matriculation exam in Finland

I chose some random smaller schools from cities with a Swedish-speaking minority to get a mix of Swedish and Finnish names. Tried to not write the same name twice.
When students graduate in Finland their names are published. I still chose to make it more anonymous and not say which city or school the names are from. The students are typically around 18 when they graduate.
Do you find any names that you haven't heard of before? And do you find any names you like?

2023.04.14 05:36 spacemaniss PSA: currently has free shipping on orders over $75

This is a good chance to score some parts and accessories. I just ordered roof rack for $184 (MSRP $230) from Lewis Toyota, door sill protectors for $115 (MSRP $149) from McGeorge Toyota and a bunch of other maintenance parts (wiper inserts, air intake and cabin filters) with good discounts from Milton Ruben Toyota. No tax on all orders and free shipping. I just look up the needed part number and then search for it on Google Shopping. A bunch of Toyota dealers with online stores pop up, many of them sell parts 10-20% lower than MSRP. I pick the one with the lowest base price regardless of shipping cost and use the promo code FREESHIP. Just thought I’d share this strategy for getting discounted OEM parts here.
EDIT: put MSRP prices in the parentheses and corrected grammar

2023.03.04 20:33 Firm_Adeptness7487 15 ft. U-Haul mpg while towing car trailer

I just completed a 761 mile move from Corpus Christi, TX to Milton, FL. I couldn't find a ton of good information online about U-haul mpg's so I figured I should share my results.
My CAT scale weigh ticket has me at 11,110 pounds. This was a 15ft U-Haul van with a car trailer loaded up with a Toyota Corolla. One thing to note is I got a really new U-Haul with around 16,000 miles so this definitely helped my fuel economy.
Leg 1 (360 miles)-11.0 mpg
Leg 2 (365 miles)- 11.4 mpg
Leg 3- (36 miles)- 9.6 mpg
I tried to average 55mph the whole time but there was a 3 hour section during the second leg where it was a torrential downpour so all traffic slowed down to about 45-50 mph. This partially explains the boost in mpg on leg 2. The last leg I averaged 65 mph to get a baseline for my mpg if I bumped up my speed. It is up to you to determine whether or not the gas savings versus additional time on the road is worth it to you. However, from a safety perspective, going 55 mph saved me from a wreck twice. The first time was in Houston at the intersection of I69 and I610. Someone cut across two lanes to try and get on I610 because they missed the exit and had stopped in the rightmost through lane I was traveling in because of a backup on the I610 exit . I had to go from 55 mph to zero on an interstate in a really short time frame. The second time was during a section of construction in between Beaumont and Lake Charles where it was two lanes and legitimately no shoulder on either side with concrete barriers at the edge of the lanes. It was pouring rain so I was taking it slow and someone had broken down in the middle of the right lane with no car lights on. It would have been a lot more dangerous of a situation if I had been going even 55mph because I barely saw the car before I needed to move over.
Just some tips that I figured out on the drive.
(1) Obviously, speed kills mpg. We are moving a giant refrigerator through air. You don't need to be super hardcore about it like I was and go 55 mph. Take 5-10 mph off of your normal highway cruising speed. There really isn't a need to go 75 mph in these rigs. It is astonishing the difference in gas savings when you add an mpg or two if you just slow down a little bit. It is also wayyy safer because you have more reaction time and require less distance to slow down.
(2) Check the tire pressures of all of your U-Haul equipment. My U-Haul truck tires were pretty close to the recommended PSI so I just topped them up to the recommended cold tire pressure. However, I found my car trailer's tires were 20 psi below the recommended tire pressure. The U-Haul manual said to inflate the trailer tires to the pressure listed on their sidewall. I wasn't comfortable with that because the sidewall psi on car tires usually indicates the max psi the car tires are rated for, not what they should actually be inflated to. So I inflated the tires by 10 psi just to be safe.
(3) Try to maintain constant throttle position going up hills and speed back up on the downhill. Here is a video explaining what the technique is. Truck driver's use this technique to get good fuel economy going over rolling hills. Essentially, you slow down hold the throttle in constant position and slow a little bit going up a hill (say 5 mph) and regain that speed on the back of the hill as you ease off the throttle and gently accelerate back to your cruising speed.
(4) Be smooth in when driving in traffic and in the city. Try and coast as much as possible and avoid braking. The biggest key is to give yourself a buffer during traffic so you can avoid slinky effect and stay at a constant speed as much as possible. Incidentally this helps smooth out traffic congestion behind you. In the city, try and anticipate red lights so you can coast into the red light. No need to keep accelerating just to brake a few hundred yards down the road.
I hope this helps.

2023.02.20 05:57 jistpeachy 1000 BOY names from US SSA lists that aren't "too popular"

Why did I do this? My husband and I have been talking about future baby names and it seems that all of my suggestions are "too popular" for his taste. So being the engineer that I am, I went to the data and created a list of names that are definitively NOT "too popular." I used the data from the SSA's website from 1930-present to create this list of boy's names. (We're not TTC any time soon, so I figured by 2030-ish I could collect 100 years of data.) Thought y'all might find it interesting in the meantime!

2023.01.28 15:35 s810 Old Austin Tales: "The Path of the Pioneers" - 1821-1836

There is an old book, written in 1963 by a lifelong Austinite who called herself a "housewife historian". This book became one of the main sources for any modern book or website about Austin's history. The book is out of print today ($50+ on Amazon or Ebay), the Austin Public Library has only one public-loanable copy for outside-of-library use, and I have that copy right now as I type this. The book is called The History of Travis County and Austin 1839-1899, by a woman named Mary Starr Barkley, and today I wanted to share part of the first chapter with y'all.
Let me say right off the bat that I have a love/hate relationship with this book. In my opinion it is not a very good book story-wise, but I cannot deny how invaluable it is as a collection of facts, figures, and the sheer number of little-told stories from the past. It very loosely follows a chronological telling of Austin's history, but it often diverges at many points to give lists of things such as the membership of a certain club, or lists of military regiments that served in the Civil War, or an anecdote or two from those who lived in the time period specified. I don't like Mary Starr Barkley's style of writing, however I don't think she would like mine if she were alive today either, so I guess we're even.
The author does a bit of whitewashing at some points which is often excused as a byproduct of the racially segregated era in which it was written. There is much more to the story than this book tells us about some aspects of the past, particularly where people of color are concerned around the Civil War.
But today I wanted to share only part of the first chapter, which covers 1820-1836. I think you will be intrigued as I was by the many mysteries it leaves us. So without further ado, here is Mary Starr Barkley's Path of the Pioneers:
The Path of the Pioneers
For Travis County and Austin, the county seat and capital city of Texas, a century and a quarter of history is now part of the past (now almost 200 years), and the story of that era is a monument to those pioneers who settled the area and left their landmarks, old homes, folklore, and history.
The story of the pioneer settlements in Travis County portrays the early days of the Republic and the State of Texas, and would not be complete without first taking the reader on a tour of this area as it must have appeared to its founders when they first came to Waterloo, later named Austin.
Why not spend a Sunday afternoon and pursue the same path those settlers followed as they wended their way up the told road from Bastrop, past the places of those pioneers that are history now—Wilbarger, Hornsby, Webber, Wells, Barton, Nash, Duty, Burleson, Rogers, Tannehill, and Manor. The roll call sounds like the roster of the Old Three Hundred.
As the road leaves Bastrop toward Austin on Highway 71, it is the path Stephen F. Austin and Mirabeau B. Lamar traveled, the old trace up Waterloo way. After leaving Bastrop and the bridge over the river, turn right on Farm Road 969, about eight miles from Bastrop, and follow that road to another crossing on the river. In 1959, the old "hump-back" bridge that was a landmark for generations was torn down, so travel passes over a new bridge. Above this crossing up the river was the old Nash's ferry where our forefathers ferried across on their journeys up to Travis County.
After crossing the river, there is a monument on the right to the road which reads:
founded in 1821 by JOSIAH PUGH WILBARGER
Beginning of Wilbarger's trace, blazed by his son, James Harvey Wilbarger, in 1860, with slaves and ox-wagons, carrying commerce to Corpus Christi and Matamoras, Mexico, erected by descendants in 1920.
Although this trace southward was started for commerce during the Civil War, this is the site of Wilbarger's Bend founded in 1821 by one of the first settlers coming Travis County way. Lamar and others who followed stopped at this place, Wilbarger's Bend, where Josiah Pugh Wilbarger, the bravest of those early settlers, became one of the first to settle above Bastrop on the western frontier.
Wilbarger's holdings were located on a creek named for him, in a bend of the Colorado River, and he was there in 1830 when Miguel Arciniega became Commissioner of the Little Colony. Stephen F. Austin and his surveying crew came up to lay out the Little Colony in March, 1830.
This Colony, of which Waterloo and the Travis County area were to be a part, had been authorized in 1827. The surveying crew was composed of Reuben Hornsby, Josiah Wilbar-ger, John F. Webber, Martin Wells, William Barton, and Jesse Tannehill.
Matthias Wilbarger soon followed his brother; next, Martin Wells settled above Wilbarger's Bend at Wells Prairie in 1831, and lived there until his death in 1836; John F. Webber in 1832 settled about three miles above Wells Prairie.
Concerning those first settlers, General Edward Burleson wrote in a letter to Lamar on February 4, 1844,
"Sir, agreeable to Request I hastn to give you a scetch of names of the settlers I found upon the Colorado in 1830 above the old Labahie Road," and he listed William Barton who was living twenty-five miles above said road, Edward Jenkins, and Elisha Barton, brother to William Barton.
As the road passes Wilbarger's Bend traveling toward Austin, Utley is on the left of the road. Here it was that James Harvey Wilbarger, son of Josiah, had his trading post in the early 1850's, and had a wagon route from this bend to the coast. It was his wife who said:
I can here now those slaves goading those oxen wagons up the steep banks of the Colorado River [at] Nash's Crossing. As they lashed those oxen... the silence was so deep that one's footsteps were as loud as a city; so still of Sunday mornings that the Methodist church bell could be heard in the distance eight miles away.
On the right is the entrance to the old Barton plantation with its old houses still standing; this was originally Wood's settlement.
As the road stretches on, the settlement of the Manors is on the left. The store and home were started by those early settlers, Joseph Manor and Frank Nash, of the old ferry crossing back at the bridge. James Manor, whose name and family the town of Manor knew later, was with them when the store woo started here at Half-Acre.
Across the road is the gin, and back of it, high on the hill, is the interesting old cemetery and the graves of many of those first settlers.
Also In this area, east of Coleman Branch or Creek, was Martin Wells' three log cabins, all cuddled closely then, but gone by the turn of the century. Wells came from Tennessee and settled at this place, called Wells Prairie, where he died about 1836.
Next will appear the sign for Deatsville, the site of Peter Carr's place; he was Travis County's first mailman.
Continuing on Farm Road 969, one reaches Webberville, with its Ebenezer Baptist Church on the left. On the church grounds, in its setting of cactus and prickly pear, with an iron fence around it, is the tall tombstone of Milton Duty, son of Joseph William Duty, born on February 2, 1836.
Webberville was originally called Webber's Prairie; it was a sizable frontier village, with the- log cabins of John Webber; Noah Smithwick; Washington Anderson and his father, Dr. Thomas Anderson; the Hamiltons, Alexander, James, John, William ; James Dodd; James and Joseph Manor; and the Dutys, George, Joseph, Matthew, Richard, and William.
Many of these first settlers died early; Joseph Duty who died about 1855 is buried on the hill in the old Manor cemetery, Matthew Duty was killed by Indians; and George Duty also was dead before 1837 ended.
Webber's Prairie later became known as Hell's Half Acre, and Webber lived there until about 1851, when he sold the land to Colonel Banks and left, following an unfortunate marriage. (he married a black woman) It was Banks who planned the town of Webberville. After the Civil War, the property became Aaron Burleson's, who married Jane Tannehill, daughter of Jesse C. Tannehill. Aaron Burleson settled at the mouth of Walnut Creek in 1838 and lived in the Austin area until he died at his home near Govalle on January 13, 1855. Tannehill settled in 1839 on land adjoining Austin on the east, called Montopolis, near old Fort Prairie, and logs from old Fort Coleman were used to build his log cabin, where he died on March 18, 1863.
Dr. Thomas Anderson served his neighbors in Travis County as their first doctor until Dr. J. S. Robertson came and rode the riverfront on horseback, serving the settlers. Noah Smithwick, who lived at Webberville then, was at old Fort Coleman too, and left the area at the time of the Civil War. It was he who wrote much of the material about early Travis County. He was born on January 1, 1808, in North Carolina, came to Texas in 1827, and was married to the widow Duty.
On the drive up the pioneers' pathway, one will notice that their settlements were on the Colorado River, often at bends of the river, such as Wilbarger Bend, Hornsby Bend, and Hunter Bend, next on this road. A road to the left leads to Hunter Bend, where William Dunlap Hunter settled after living at Hornsby Bend for a short time after coming to the area from South Carolina in 1859. When he bought the Burleson tract, it became known as Hunter's Bend. It was he who worked to get a post office there, called Dunlap post office, and he carried the mail to the settlers until the establishment of the post office. Mrs. C. W. Hackett, Hunter's youngest child, still preserves the two-story Hunter home, with porches on three sides, and the family cemetery in the yard. J. T. Glass, who has lived at Hunter's Bend for half a century, is the son of a Texas Ranger who lived in Bastrop in its early days. Back on the main road is the two-story rambling, red-roofed Gilbert home, and then Hornsby Bend.
It was in July, 1832, that Reuben Hornsby ventured on up above Wilbarger's, where he had been staying, and which was in Bastrop County, and settled at the bend of the river named for him, about ten miles below Austin, where he started the first settlement in Travis County, with his wife, Sallie, and his sons, Daniel, Joseph, Malcolm, Reuben, Thomas, and William. His brothers, Smith and Thomas Hornsby, joined him later, and Hornsby's Bend became a stopping place for settlers in the county; there, too, was started the first school in Travis County. A marker can be seen on the right of the road before the intersection of the road to Bergstrom Field on the left.
The old cabins and fort were destroyed early in the twentieth century, but the cemetery remained, to the left of the road, near the church, and the first two graves were those of Howell Haggett and John Williams, soldiers sent to Hornsby's during the revolution in 1836, to help guard the fort. These two men were scalped by the Indians while hoeing in their corn fields, and were buried on the spot, starting the cemetery there for the settlers. Rueben Hornsby was buried there when he died in 1879, and a state marker was erected in 1936. In Texas' old Land Office building, which is the museum of the Republic of Texas, are relics of Hornsby's life and times at Hornsby Bend. Among them are his favorite chair and a table which the Mormons built when they were camped nearby at Fort Coleman. The Rueben Hornsby Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic Texas, chartered in 1919, has been composed of lineal descendants of this man.
As the road leaves Hornsby's Bend, it passes the State Farm on the left and Rogers Hill on the right. Here, James and Joseph Rogers settled, and their cemetery on a knoll off the road is where Joseph was buried after being scalped by the Indians in the fall of 1837. With Edward Burleson, these men often gathered groups to patrol the settlements along the river; they later moved to Fort Prairie, which was a name for the area around Fort Coleman.
The pioneer travelers always stopped at Fort Coleman; it known that Lamar did, because he arrived at Waterloo from there for that famous buffalo hunt with an escort of rangers including James O. Rice and Willis Avery. The old fort is gone, but it was located near the intersection of Webberville Road and Nineteenth Street, about two miles above Hornsby Bend, one mile east of Montopolis, and at the northwest corner of Jesse Tannehill's League.
Fort Coleman was built in the summer of 1836, shortly after the General Council had established on November 28, 1835, three companies of rangers, twenty-five in each company, under Captain John J. Tumlinson, to guard settlers on the Brazos, Colorado and Trinity Rivers. These rangers were paid $1.25 daily and they furnished their own horses and ammunition.
The fort was named for Captain Robert M. Coleman, whom President David G. Burnet made a captain in 1836. This man, a tall Kentuckian, with dark hair and eyes, remained a ranger until 1837, when he resigned after a difference with Sam Houston, and he drowned later in the Brazos River. His wife and children were victims of a Comanche raid in February, 1839.
As one continues to travel on this road toward Austin, there is a monument to Fort Coleman and its Texas Rangers, but it was placed in a pasture." Miss Susannah Moehr remembers living across the road from the old fort; that her father tore down old log cabins, once part of the fort located there by the spring and the creek. When Lamar stopped there, it was a cluster of cabins, surrounded by a stockade, high on a hill, on Walnut, or Coleman Creek, as it was also called, about five miles east of Austin. The monument reads:
The site of Fort Colorado (also called Coleman's Fort) established and first commanded by Colonel Robert M. Coleman, succeeded by Captain Michael Andrews and Captain William M. Eastland, an extreme frontier outpost occupied by Texas Rangers to protect Anglo-American civilization from savage Indians in this vicinity.
In January, 1836, Tumlinson's company served on the Colorado River with about sixty mounted men, including Noah Smithwick. The company ranged from Hornsby's up to Brushy Creek, east of Austin. Coleman replaced Tumlinson and built the fort named for him. The small community which grew up close by, east of the fort, on the prairie, was called Fort Prairie. It was once called Johns' town, too, because several men with that first name lived there. The rangers skirmished often with the Indians, and it was on the prairie around the fort that these men and Reuben Horns-by and Jacob Harrell met, while hunting buffalo. When the rangers disbanded and left the fort in 1838, some of the men settled at Austin, among them Horace and Rodney Baker, Felix McClusky, William Miller, and James O. Rice.
In the Travis County area, there were several forts: one in 1830 at the mouth of Wilbarger Creek about ten miles above Bastrop, one at Coleman Branch three miles below Webber's Prarie in 1831 ; one at Webber's Prairie; one at Thomas A. Mooore's on the west bank of Gilleland Creek (named for an early settler, James Gilleland) in 1831, his later place was known as Moore's Crossing on the south side of the river; one at Comanche, also on the south side of the river, just below the mouth of Onion Creek in 1831; one at Hornsby's in 1832; and Fort Coleman in 1836.
Not many who got grants of land in Travis County ventured over to the far (south) side of the river, but a few did, like Bobby Mitchell, John McGehee, Thomas W. Moore, John Moore, Robert Moore, Nathaniel Moore, and James Gilleland. Thomas W. Moore, a freighter when the rangers were at Fort Coleman, married the daughter of Aaron Burleson, and their old log cabins still stand at Moore's Crossing. A book could be written about this place and the people. Their son, Robert, was born in 1833 in a tent where they lived on Gilleland Creek, and the story of this settlement is fascinating, even into this century in 1925 when the Engler murder in that area was made memorable by the headlines, and by the reward that reputedly still stands for its solution. Also there were James, John, Joseph, Aaron, and Johnathan Burleson who knew Travis County as pioneers.
Lewis and William Hancock settled on Onion Creek in 1838 on the John Burleson place, as did John McGehee and Morgan Hamilton of Huntsville, Alabama, in 1837. In 1830, John Caldwell went across the river from Webber's and located on the Navarro grant. This presently is the Garfield area and near the site of the town of Comanche. This township was about one mile from the mouth of Onion Creek and is part of the Rowe Caldwell land on the south bank of the river.
Comanche was the site of an early Indian trading post, in the Travis County area, and was a competitor for the site of the capital city, The towns of Waterloo and Comanche were incorporated January 15, 1839, and had the first post offices listed for Travis County. Comanche offered 18,015 acres to the Republic of Texas if the capital were placed at its location. Comanche dates back to the Mexican period in Texas, decades before Travis County and Austin were settled. In the special Alamo Papers file in the Texas State Archives, is a letter William J. Cannon wrote from Soldiers Home, Leavenworth, Kansas on August 3, 1892, of his claim to property "in front of Austin." He states in that letter and a statement of June 9, 1893, that before Texas was thought of, his family lived on Onion Creek, four and a half miles south of Austin, where he was born March 16, 1821, son of William C. Cannon and Martha Cannon. His father came from Tennessee in 1815 and had a small trading post one-half mile up this creek, where the Caddos, Lipans, Tonkaways, and Comanches came in small parties to trade. The trading post was located one-half mile from their house to keep Indians away. His family consisted of his father, mother, a brother, John Henry Cannon, age 18, and three sisters, Susan (wife of Lt. Almeron Dickinson], and Hattie, age 23, and Maya-gel, age 21.
According to these papers, when he was ten years old, there was a big "run" of Indians and his family moved to San Antonio for safety, where they lived on Northwest Laredo Street, across the river west from the Alamo. Later his father moved into the Milano Blanco where some of the troops were stationed. His oldest sister (a half-sister), Mrs. Dickinson, lived in the righthand room entering the Alamo, and the Cannon family lived there when Travis and Bonham came. He remembered Senora Andrea Castanon Candelaria taking care of the sick Bowie and seeing Bowie, Travis, Crockett, and others killed. He claims his father, mother, two sisters, and brother were killed in the walls of the fort at the Alamo, but his god-mother, Senora Candelaria, helped him escape to Dr. Levario's house where the Menger Hotel stands in 1961.
Cannon claimed that he lived his later years with the Indians, and spoke fourteen Indian languages, Spanish, French, and English. He returned to Texas with "Chief Jeronimo" in .1887, at which time Cannon told his story in San Antonio. Governor James S. Hogg questioned the story in answering Cannon's letter on July 7, 1893, in writing to General W. P. Hardeman. Nathan Mitchell (a General Land Office clerk in Austin during the Archives War of 1842), replying for General Hardeman on July 12, 1893, stated that William Cannon lived in the northwestern part of Bexar County and at that time was drawing a pension as a Mexican War veteran.
Many who had gotten grants in the Travis County area in the 1830s did not settle them. One of these was the Del Valle grant made to Santiago del Valle in 1832, which was a long time in being settled. It is situated where Bergstrom Air Force Base was erected during World War II.
As the traveler leaves Webberville Road near the Nineteenth Street intersection, he should take the lower road, the path of pioneers, which brings one into modern Austin through Montopolis. It was at Montopolis, on his league of land that Tannehill from Kentucky, laid out a town; but this town, his dream, was to die defeated. As one drives past the Montopolis area to the Seventh Street entry to Austin, he can envision the city Tannehill planned on his eight hundred acres of land, conveyed to him by the State of Coahuila and Texas in 1832.
William M. Eastland, Silas Dinsmore, J. S. Lester, J. L. lit Mill, mill .Inures Smith joined him in the venture, and on the north side of the Colorado River, where Howard's Nursery is presently a landmark, in a setting of cottonwood, elm, hackberry, and pecan trees, the enterprisers laid out their town. The sale of building lots and farm lots was held in July, 1839. The main street led through the town from a stake on the river bank, and there was a provision that this main street always be kept open for traffic, and that the waterfront be reserved for the town.
Deeds and papers in the name of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Howard show the patent records of the State of Coahuila and Texas, and on October 29, 1832, by the Commissioner Miguel Arciniega and Empresario Stephen F. Austin "Englis acers" for Ingress and egress farms, and deeds of 1835 show J. C. Tannehill appearing at the town of Mina (Bastrop) regarding his property at Montopolis, which was part of Austin's Little Colony. Tannehill later deeded some of the land to his daughter, Jane, who married Aaron Burleson.
On July 2, 1839, the owners and promoters of Montopolis sold building blocks. Lots 5, 6, 15, and 16 were set aside for churches, seminaries of learning, and other public buildings and to promote the general prosperity of the place. Lots 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, and 13 were laid out 200 yards wide and 524 yards deep, and were each 22 acres. Lots on the other side of the main street, numbered 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, were 200 yards wide, 602 yards deep, and had 25 acres each. The farm lots sold for $11.871/2 per acre.
But at that time, Waterloo, or Austin, was having sales of lots, and by the fall of 1839, Montopolis began to wane. In 1840, two of the buyers sold back to J. C. Tannehill farm lot 11, facing Main Street. Six years later, the men were dividing the unsold portions of the town trace on Main Street leading to the river. The founders of this town did not dream that their town would revert to being just "earth land" as specified in the deed.
From Montopolis the early settlers went in along about the path of Seventh Street, until the Robertson Hill area, in about the 900 block, when they veered down toward Fifth Street and this is the route of Lamar on his triumphal entry into Austin as President of the Republic of Texas in the fall of 1839.
And having followed in the footsteps of the forefathers over the old trace they traveled to Waterloo, one receives additional appreciation for the story of Travis County, and its county seat, Austin, which grew up out of the village of Waterloo, and for the men who made it memorable. It might well have been these forefathers, and their fathers, as they settled and built this county, who inspired John Ruskin to say:
Therefore, when we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for the present delight, nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time will come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, "See! this our fathers did for us."
Here, the story becomes that of the settlement of Waterloo (or later Austin) in the county area in 1839. This is also the story of Mirabeau B. Lamar's completing the dream of the Austins.
Well there you have it. All of the above material is covered in this five part blog post with maps and photos of what the place looks like now. (scroll to the bottom for part I) But that blog site leaves out the mysterious story of William Cannon. The book says it was Josiah Wilbarger and Ruben Hornsby who made the first settlements in Travis County around 1832, but apparently by that time the Cannon family was already living on Onion Creek with a trading post nearby to trade with local natives. Who was the real William Cannon? No one alive today seems to know. But this Community Impact article from a few years ago tells about a third contender besides the other two mentioned in the book. Even more interesting is the brief mention of an "indian village" in the 1820s near the site of where town of Comanche was situated in the early 1830s. What happened with that? It will always be a mystery.
I'm running late for this post so I better leave it there. I have a few Bonus Pics today from the UNT Archive of Moore's Crossing for y'all, mentioned in the book.

2023.01.02 05:41 LeButtfart Next All Black 10?

With the news about Richie Mo'unga signing with Toyota, and Beauden Barrett being 36 at the 2027 tournament, there needs to be a clear line of succession. So who are the likely lads?
Josh Ioane, Damien McKenzie and Bryn Gatland - the Chiefs trio are all currently aged 27 (28 when this year's tournament kicks off), making then 32 going into the next World Cup in four year's time. 2 of them have been capped, and all are solid players. However, Ioane has regressed as a 10 (and spends more time at 12 and 15 anyway), while McKenzie and Hall can have some significant lapses.
Stephen Perofeta came of age with the Blues last year, and at age 25, will be in a good position to be the preferred 10 in 4 year's time. It is undeniable he is a prodigious talent, but he has consistently buckled under pressure at the provincial and Super Rugby level, and may be more suited to fullback than five-eighth.
Fergus Burke appears to be the heir apparent at the Crusaders once Mo'unga packs his bags for Japan, having come through the Canterbury->Crusaders pipeline. He is a reliable option, albeit a fairly conservative one.
Brett Cameron was a surprise selection in 2018 - a promising player that was called up well before his time, and crumbled under the heightened expectations of his status as an All Black. He's paid his dues out in the regions of Japan (Kamaishi isn't exactly what you'd call a bustling metropolis), and a decent campaign with Manawatu last year, he could be a safe pair of hands.
Aidan Morgan and Ruben Love have both made huge strides in the last 12 months, and Love in particular is clearly on the selector's radar with his selection in the ABs XV squad last year. Both are in their early 20s, and could be long-term options, especially with their ability to play at fullback as well.

Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished forgers in history, Mark Hofmann is especially noted for his creation of documents related to the history of the Latter Day Saint movement
Mark William Hofmann (born December 7, 1954) is an American counterfeiter, forger, and convicted murderer. Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished forgers in history, Hofmann is especially noted for his creation of documents related to the history of the Latter Day Saint movement. When his schemes began to unravel, he constructed bombs to murder three people in Salt Lake City, Utah. The first two bombs killed two people on October 15, 1985. On the following day, a third bomb exploded in Hofmann’s car. He was arrested for the bombings three months later, and in 1987 pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder, one count of theft by deception and one count of fraud.
In 1980, Hofmann claimed that he had found a 17th-century King James Bible with a folded paper gummed inside. The document seemed to be the transcript that Smith’s scribe Martin Harris had presented to Charles Anthon, a Columbia classics professor, in 1828. According to the Mormon scripture Joseph Smith–History, the transcript and its unusual reformed Egyptian characters were copied by Smith from the golden plates from which he translated the Book of Mormon.
Hofmann constructed his version to fit Anthon’s description of the document, and its discovery made Hofmann’s reputation. Dean Jessee, an editor of Smith’s papers and the best-known expert on handwriting and old documents in the Historical Department of the LDS Church, concluded that the document was a Smith holograph. The LDS Church announced the discovery of the Anthon Transcript in April and purchased it from Hofmann for more than US$20,000.
Perhaps the most famous of Hofmann’s Mormon forgeries, the Salamander letter, appeared in 1984. Supposedly written by Martin Harris to W. W. Phelps, the letter presented a version of the recovery of the gold plates that contrasted markedly with the church-sanctioned version of events. Not only did the letter intimate that Smith had been practicing “money digging” through magical practices, but it also replaced the angel that Smith said had appeared to him with a white salamander.
In addition to documents from Mormon history, Hofmann also forged and sold signatures of many famous non-Mormons, including George Washington, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Daniel Boone, John Brown, Andrew Jackson, Mark Twain, Nathan Hale, John Hancock, Francis Scott Key, Abraham Lincoln, John Milton, Paul Revere, Myles Standish, and Button Gwinnett, whose signature was the rarest, and therefore the most valuable, of any signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hofmann also forged a previously unknown poem in the hand of Emily Dickinson.
But Hofmann’s grandest scheme was to forge what was perhaps the most famous missing document in American colonial history, the Oath of a Freeman. The one-page Oath had been printed in 1639, the first document to be printed in Britain’s American colonies, but only about fifty copies had been made, and none of them were extant. A genuine example was probably worth over US$1 million in 1985, and Hofmann’s agents began to negotiate a sale to the Library of Congress.
Despite the considerable amounts of money Hofmann had made from document sales, he was deeply in debt, in part because of his increasingly lavish lifestyle and his purchases of genuine first-edition books. Those to whom Hofmann had promised documents or repayments of debts began to hound him, and the sale of the Oath of a Freeman was delayed by questions about its authenticity.
In an effort to buy more time, Hofmann began constructing bombs. On October 15, 1985, he first killed document collector Steven Christensen (as well as injuring a secretary in the leg with shrapnel). Later the same day, a second bomb killed Kathy Sheets, the wife of Christensen’s former employer. The following day, Hofmann himself was severely injured when a bomb exploded in his Toyota MR2. Although police quickly focused on Hofmann as the suspect in the bombings, some of his business associates went into hiding, fearing they might also become victims.
During the bombing investigation, police discovered evidence of the forgeries in Hofmann’s basement. They also found the engraving plant where the forged plate for Oath of a Freeman was made. Document examiner George Throckmorton analyzed several Hofmann documents that had previously been deemed authentic and determined they were forgeries.
Hofmann initially maintained his innocence. However, at a preliminary hearing, prosecutors produced voluminous evidence of his forgeries and debts, as well as evidence linking him to the bombs. During the investigations, many of the prosecution team became convinced that they were being stonewalled by leaders of the LDS Church. Chief investigator Jim Bell said, “They’re hiding something; the church is doing everything it can to make this as difficult as possible. I’ve never seen anything like this in a homicide investigation.”
After Hofmann was imprisoned, he was excommunicated by the LDS Church and his wife filed for divorce. Hofmann attempted suicide in his cell by taking an overdose of antidepressants.
As a master forger, Hofmann deceived a number of renowned document experts during his short career. Some of his forgeries were accepted by scholars for years, and an unknown number of them may still be in circulation. But it is Hofmann’s forgeries of Mormon documents that have had the greatest historical significance.
A three-part documentary series about Hofmann’s illegal activities, entitled Murder Among the Mormons, premiered on Netflix on March 3, 2021.
The events were a part of the series, City Confidential in the 1998 episode, “Faith and Foul Play in Salt Lake City”.
A 2003 BBC documentary about Hofmann is entitled “The Man Who Forged America”.

Hello Jamily,

High Times Deluxe Vinyl Set NEW JK Linear Notes

Transcribed By JamiroFan2000

1997, an amazing year for us - magical times in Great Linford Studios, our first residential recording sessions. Lots of late nights and Playstation breaks until the eyes started rolling.
High Times was the first track we did - all live, Derrick sat under 20 blankets for sound - an EMI Neve desk that didn't behave itself and me thinking this album needs to be the bomb or otherwise we get dropped.
Toby buying this Toyota Supra - me in a BMW M635CSi making pretty patterns around Milton Keynes roundabouts at various times of day and night - Esther the chef doing amazing grub - the thick pungent smell of jazz cigarettes EVERYWHERE - ALL THE TIME.
The Travelling Without Moving tour started - made my way down to the first gig in Exeter in a 1970s Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, seeing fans also on their way to the gig, but feeling decidedly ropey. Got to the gig, called the doctor, he told me I had shingles - the doctor said eight weeks of rest is what you need - I took two - got back on the road. I thought we'd be finished, but those fans - YOU GUYS - stayed with it. Always many thanks.
We are still here, through tough times, tragedy, utter heartache, low times, but always trying to hold on to the high times.
So many memories - first time in South America, unbelievable experiences - amazing Japanese super fans at the Tokyo Dome - Australia, mega enthusiastic Aussies - the United States, fabulous American fans who supported us since day one - beautiful fans from Europe, particularly France, Spain, Switzerland, and above all, Italy.
MTV video of the year with Virtual Insanity, Ivor Novello award, Silver Clef award, then a Grammy, I nearly fainted. I'd never won anything before in my life. Mega fun on Cosmic Girl shoot, fast cars and fast living, still too young to die.
So many people hail me everyday - 'Legend!' they say, Ha, I'm NOT the legend, YOU are the legends.
A thousand thanks, love you all very much. Jx
The Space Cowboy will return with a new chapter in 2023. Possibly a slightly lower orbit than 1997.
As you know, we all miss Toby dearly - such a huge part of our lives. Hope you're doing OK up there. We were 'Livin' Fast 'n'Livin' Free'. These were our High Times buddy.
J xxx

High Times Deluxe Vinyl Set NEW JK Linear Notes

J xxx

2022.12.16 00:53 Killinger 2022-23 JRLO Season Preview

Hi everyone! Who is ready for some Japan Rugby League One action? Well I’m here to get you ready for what is, in my humble opinion, the most entertaining domestic rugby competition outhere.
Ok the most entertaining outside of ProD2.
Last year was the inaugural season of JRLO and there were some issues. A strict Covid policy meant that a third of the regular season games were canceled, and stadium attendances weren’t all that strong. The level of play was encouraging though, and while this offseason didn’t bring in many international stars, I expect the playing standard to continue to get better this season.
Major Storylines to follow:
Just how popular is this league? I firmly believe that the first JRLO season produced a lot of entertaining rugby, but the reaction of the Japanese sporting public seemed rather muted. The league averaged 6,000 people per game last year, which isn’t horrible when compared to other professional club rugby competitions, but still it was well off of where JRLO would want to be coming off a very successful world cup. Obviously, COVID was a huge hurdle last year. There were caps on crowd sizes early on, and roughly a third of all regular season games were canceled due to COVID rules, some at the very last minute. But now COVID restrictions are basically gone. These first few weeks will tell us a lot about how much of the small crowd sizes last year were due to COVID, and how well teams are growing their new home fanbases.
Can anyone beat the Wild Knights? If you don’t count games they lost due to Covid infection rules, the Wild Knights went undefeated last year. Robbie Dean has built an impressive operation in Saitama, and it will be extremely challenging for any other team to stop them. There were some nervous moments last year for the Wild Knights, they had a few last second wins and many second half comebacks, but they always managed to pull it out. I don’t think they’ll go undefeated again this year, but I would be very surprised if they don’t win another championship at the end of the year.
More Japanese head coaches are being hired. Can they do better than expected? Just two teams last year had Japanese head coaches, the Eagles and Blue Revs. And to their credit, both teams did fairly well last year, at least compared to my initial expectations of the teams. Both coaches, Keisuke Sawaki and Naoya Okubo, had experience coaching with Eddie Jones when he was at the Sungoliath. Now two other teams in Division 1 have Japanese coaches; Kiyonori Tanaka replaced Milton Haig at Tokyo Sungoliath, and Yoshitake Mizuma stayed on board while the Liners were promoted last season. At a broad level, it is a positive sign to see Japanese head coaches doing well against some big name foreign coaches. At the same time, I’m sure all of these coaches know that Jamie Joseph won’t be back after the 2023 World Cup. Will one of them impress enough to be offered the top job?
Power rankings:
1. Saitama Wild Knights - Last year’s champs are back and better than ever. They won every game they actually played last year, even though a few came down to the wire. They’re still probably a level above the rest of the competition, and have reloaded their roster. I wouldn’t bet against Robbie Dean's men until some other team shows they’re capable of beating them.
2. Tokyo Sungoliath - The Sungoliath ran the Wild Knights close in the final last season, but couldn’t get the job done with Damian McKenzie (or even with Beuden Barrett the year before). They brought in Aaron Cruden as a stop gap international player as they wait for the real superstars to become available after the World Cup. They have a number of young exciting Japanese players, but that usually doesn’t win you championships. It doesn’t help that Samu Kervi will be out for half the season.
3. Yokohama Canon Eagles - Probably a bit of a reach, but this team has had a very promising preseason. They are very experienced, and have a fair number of solid, savvy non-capped internationals that played as well as other team’s star signings (see Kobus van Dyk). If this team can remain healthy, I think they can certainly push the top two throughout the season.
4. Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo Bay - A semi finalist last year, this team opted to keep its capped international players together one last time before a stockpile of current international stars becomes available next season. That means that Bernard Foley, Ryan Crotty and Malcolm Marx will be once again leading the charge, as newer players gain experience.
5. Kobelco Kobe Steelers - They were one of the more disappointing clubs last year, but a very encouraging offseason has vaulted them back into playoff contention. They’ve recruited very smartly at all levels. They brought in Ngani Laumape and Marcell Coetzee as their marquee signings, and they should both adapt well to the running style of Japanese rugby. They brought in solid underrated players like Beaudein Waaka and Michael Little. And they even added some very promising young players like Saumaki Amanaki and Willie Potgieter. Their star fly half Lee Seung-Sin now has international test experience. This should be a team on the upswing, but we’ll see how quickly all these new parts can gel together.
6. Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo - I was dead wrong about this team last season. I expected them to be in the bottom four, and instead they made it to the semi-finals. Like the Eagles and Spears, they are also a veteran heavy team with very little turnover this offseason. However, I don’t think they have the same potential as those two teams since their young talent isn’t quite at the same level (plus they lost one of the most promising young Japanese centers this offseason due to homesickness).
7. Toyota Verblitz - Fairly disappointing last season for the Steve Hansen and the Verblitz, And like many other teams, they haven’t exactly opened up the bank for more foreign replacements to come in. Depth was their biggest issue last year, so we’ll see if any of their younger domestic talent will take a step up this year. Otherwise, it seems likely they will miss the playoffs again.
8. Shizuoka Blue Revs - A team that I clearly underestimated last year, they were much better than expected. Kwagga Smith proved to be one of the best signings of the year, and took to the Japanese game very easily (possibly due to his 7s background). The Blue Revs had nearly half their games canceled last year and cost them a lot of points. But that also meant their depth wasn’t tested nearly as much as other teams
9. Black Rams Tokyo - The Black Rams had a good start last year, but they faded badly in the back half of the season. To their credit, they did try to address some of their issues with their forward pack in the offseason, but I fear their domestic talent just isn’t big enough or good enough to make it to the playoffs this year. Isaac Lucus will be worth watching though, he was arguably the best flyhalf in the entire competition.
10. Mitsubishi Sagamihara DynaBoars - Everyone rejoice, for the Dynaboars are back in the top division. Along with the Liners, the Dynaboars positively bossed the rest of Division 2 last season. The Liners narrowly beat them out to get the top seed in the relegation playoffs, but I’m putting them ahead of the Liners as I think they did a better job reinforcing their squad.
11. Hanazono Kintetsu Liners - The Liners are one of the most historic clubs in all of Japan, and I’m very relieved for Osaka rugby fans that, after the sudden departure of the Red Hurricanes to the 3rd Division, they still have a team in the first division to cheer for. And it doesn’t hurt that they play their home games in the nicest Rugby specific stadium in Japan. However, it might be a long season for the Liners. They were very dependent on Quade Cooper last year, and he will be out for a while. Plus they didn’t add much to their forward ranks.
12. Green Rockets Tokatsu - The Green Rockets were abysmal last year, as their only regular season wins coming from COVID cancellations. They were very fortunate not to be relegated. I think they’ll finally go down this year though. Their domestic talent and depth isn’t good enough for Division 1. But it will be fun to see Taqele Naiyaravoro run people over.
How to Follow Unfortunately, Sky Sports NZ/Stan Sports haven't confirmed if they are broadcasting any games like they did last year. So your only hope to watch games is to be a sicko and use a VPN to create an account with JSports. Good news is that JSports is offering the first weekend as a free trial. Beyond that, the league was usually good at posting highlights on their youtube channel.
