2023.06.02 00:45 mvis_thma Luminar Technologies - TD Cowen 51st Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference
Josh: Volvo, SAIC, Polestar are ramping nearer term. The push back on LiDAR is that it has always been too expensive. How are the OEMs trying to monetize the cost?
Tom: It all comes down to the value you get. The Luminar sensor is around $1000. There are 2 primary benefits. 1) Volvo said they expect to reduce severe collisions by 20% (Luminar thinks that is a conservative estimate). 2) Luminar is the best long-range LiDAR in the industry. It can see 250M, which provides 7 seconds of reaction time, which is needed to achieve a safe stop or take some other maneuvers. This enables "highway autonomy", which is hands off and eyes off. Luminar believes that full Level 5 (hands off, eyes off everywhere) is a very difficult problem to solve. This may only be achieved at end of decade at best. Highway autonomy, however, is achievable. $1000 is not the cheapest device to put on a vehicle, but in order for highway autonomy to be enabled, the car must have a LiDAR that provides 250M of visibility. This will enable the OEM to upsell the consumer to this capability.
Josh: Is the goal for the OEMs to generate subscription revenue for "highway autonomy".
Tom: SAIC R7 and Volvo are marketing the power of the LiDAR, for better safety and highway autonomy. Today, the auto industry is in a big pivot to EVs. These buyers are tech savvy. The LiDAR is a differentiator in this space. LiDAR and it benefits provides a great marketing message for the OEMs in the crowded EV space.
Josh: Talk about your relationship with the compute players: Nvidia, Qualcomm, and Mobileye.
Tom: Some OEMs have their in-house software arms (for example Volvo has Zenseact). Mercedes Benz is using Nvidia to take the lead on certain parts of the software. Luminar is flexible to work with either model. Luminar is designed to work with the compute players. For example, Luminar is on the reference platform (Hyperion) from Nvidia. It doesn't guarantee the OEM will choose Luminar, but it makes it Luminar's business to lose.
Josh: What is the business model for the software platform. You have made more investments than your peers for example in things like pro-active safety and highway autonomy.
Tom: Yes, safety, highway autonomy, and 3D mapping. Luminar believes there will be big opportunities on the software for the medium and long term. In the near term, it is the perception software which is the object identification and object tracking - this is the output of the perception software. Luminar is developing the right way to integrate the LiDAR (pro-active safety) information into the other sensor modalities (camera, radar). They have built a product (they call pro-active safety) to share with the OEMs to show what the art of the possible is. The OEMs are very good at taking camera-based output and developing the algorithms around that. The LiDAR point cloud is a different sensor modality. Luminar is helping the OEMs to integrate that. Ultimately, they want to demonstrate to the OEM what a LiDAR can do when you put it on a vehicle. They are focused on perception software today. Longer term proactive safety, highway autonomy, and 3D mapping will be separate revenue streams.
Josh: What is the goal and status of the insurance angle? It was surprising to hear this at Luminar Day.
Tom: It facilitates the monetization of the safety improvement. If cars crash less, the cost to insure the vehicle will come down. The legacy insurance companies wanted to see years of data until they would value the LiDAR appropriately. Luminar wanted to move faster than this. This is why Luminar took the lead to develop the insurance business.
Josh: How does the partnership with Swiss Re work?
Tom: Luminar recognizes they are not experts in insurance. Swiss Re plays the expert role. Luminar wants to go through the OEM partners to do this together. Many OEMs are looking to build out their own insurance business. Luminar is willing to give the insurance money to the OEM, but of course the OEM will need the LiDAR to make the insurance product work.
Audience Member: Where does the Luminar LiDAR stand with regard to navigating bad weather?
Tom: Bad weather can mean anything from fog, to blizzard, to rain. Luminar operates at a wavelength of 1550nm. Tom talked about many other LiDAR companies operating at 905nm and how that wavelength is limited by the amount of power that can be applied due to eye safety issues. Luminar can put more power through the 1550nm laser to effectively "power through" fog or a blizzard. However, there will be some limitations to this. The other aspect is how to keep the LiDAR clean. Since the Luminar sensor is designed to be placed "high up" on the vehicle it is easier to keep clean vs. a LiDAR sensor that is placed down lower in the bumper.
Josh: How should we look at the competitive landscape with other LiDAR players and also including imaging radar companies?
Tom: 1) Tom does not know how many LiDAR companies will exist 10 years from now. But there will be less than today. There will be a day of reckoning over the next 12 to 18 months for some of the LiDAR companies. Again, there will be less companies 10 years from now, don't know how many, but Luminar will be one of them. 2) It all comes down to what you want the LiDAR to do. It is not the cheapest thing to put on the car ($1000). If an OEM is only focused on an ADAS system today with only incremental improvements he is not sure if buying a LiDAR for that purpose is worth it. Could an imaging radar system provide that kind of incremental benefit, perhaps yes.
Josh: Luminar issued guidance for doubling revenue this year. This was before Volvo announced a delay in the EX90 rollout. How are you able to maintain revenue guidance for this year.
Tom: We built a conservative model. Despite the Volvo delay, we are still planning for increased sensor sales (vs. last year). Their new factory is up and running. Other programs and other customers (not in the automotive space) will also grow. They have healthy NRE revenue. LSI (Components) subsidiary is growing (however the revenue here will actually be for next year vs. this year).
Josh: What are some of the customer assumptions for the doubling of revenue through 2025 and 2026.
Tom: Phase 1: Over next 12 months, Volvo and Polestar will begin shipping and they will continue with SAIC and some other customers that will build up. Phase 2: Mecedes and Nissan will come along in the middle part of the decade. The plan would be to reach a 100,000+ rate sometime next year (driven by the Volvo launch). The million-unit rate would be achieved in 2026 or 2027. Of the million-unit mark over 75% has already been booked. The remainder will be achieved via existing customers by expanding to additional vehicle lines.
Josh: What does "booked today" mean?
Tom: For those in the automotive industry, it means they have been officially awarded the vehicle program, they have an agreement in place with the customer, they have a rough sense of timing. The risk is how many vehicles will the OEM sell. Example: Volvo - Luminar will be on every EX90. What is unknown is how many EX90s will Volvo sell next year. Luminar uses IHS who does industry forecasting to come up with an estimated number. The only elements considered booked with Volvo is the EX90 and EX90 Excellence. All the other models are not considered booked.
Josh: You have provided some margin targets - gross margin positive exiting this year. 35% in 2025. Longer term 65% gross margin.
Tom: ASP will be $1000 (plus or minus) range. The $1000 includes the BOM, the conversion costs, and then some drib and drab costs (like warranty). They use 3rd party partners like Fabrinet and Celestica to manufacture the sensor. They believe the cost a sensor will be $650 (plus or minus) once they get to scale in late 2024 or 2025 timeframe. Longer term, their next generation product (ready in the 2nd half of the decade) they believe they can get the cost down to $350 by bringing down the BOM cost and the conversion cost (i.e. manufacturing cost).
Josh: You have said you have enough capital to reach cash flow breakeven. What assumptions are baked into that? You did a shelf earlier this year.
Tom: The shelf is based upon them getting a lot of calls about M&A opportunities. Many companies are struggling to raise money right now. This would be for opportunistic M&A. They referenced some recent examples: Seagate LiDAR business, Argo Princeton operation, Velodyne/Ouster India operation, and Simple Map as examples). If an acquiree wants cash, they wanted an ability to act nimbly but then have the ability to backfill that cash by selling equity from the shelf. Tom reiterated they have enough cash to get to profitability. Cash burn will come down meaningfully toward the end of the year due to the one-time launch costs they have now.
My analysis - Tom was very consistent with regard to the messaging; specifically related to the "highway autonomy" and "905nm eye safety" messages. I'll give kudos to him there.
- I personally think they will struggle to reach their double their revenue goal, which I believe is around $80M to $90M this year. But they will probably get close. To me, it's not that big of a deal if they miss, as long as they get reasonably close.
- I also learned a bit about their software strategy. They probably mentioned some of this before, but I didn't pick up on it. They of course are providing perception software, which may or may not be needed depending on the OEM's desire. But they also mentioned their "pro-active safety" and "highway autonomy" software for the future. I equate this to the Microvision "drive-by-wire" project. I call it a project because I am not sure this will even be something the OEMs will want to purchase from the LiDAR vendor. Even Tom alluded to the fact that they want to show the OEMs the "art of the possible". Sumit has referred to the "drive-by-wire" software in a similar manner (at least IMHO). It was interesting that Tom never used the name "Sentinel" to reference their software, which I thought was a bit odd.
- The last thing is about the clarity on what does "booked" mean. Certainly, there has been a lot of discussion about the Luminar (and Innoviz) "Order Book". And as we know, even the SEC is/was concerned about it. But honestly, perhaps this is simply how the automotive industry works. That is, there is no guarantee of revenue until the cars with the LiDAR sensors on them ship. At that point, the revenue is earned. Prior to that, there is no backlog. But, the LiDAR vendors want to portray to their investors some sort of picture of future revenue, and the only way they can do that is to make up a new instrument which they call an "Order Book". Clearly, this sort of thing could be an instrument for shadiness or perhaps even fraud. But, it might be perfectly legitimate. I just don't know. I've asked before, and I will ask again. Is there anyone here who understands how the automotive industry works and can verify and/or explain how it all works? Actually, it would not surprise me if Microvision came up with some sort of similar mechanism to provide us investors with some sort of picture of the future. Right now, we are patiently waiting for a "Design Win".

2023.06.02 00:45 LordFarquaadLOL Need advice! My mom has NO boundaries.
I’m currently 8w5 with my rainbow baby and I’m finding out from my sister (who I have a super close relationship with) that our mother is trying to get information out of her about whether I am pregnant or not!
My husband and I haven’t told anyone and don’t plan to until after our 11 week ultrasound because of what we went through with our miscarriage in December. Not only did my mother make that about her (“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you were pregnant first! I need to know these things!”) but now she is trying to weasel her way into finding things out that I am not ready to share.
Does anyone else have experience with this? How can I be firm about boundaries? She has been a toxic/narcissistic parent my whole life and believes she is NEVER wrong, so that just makes the whole thing even more delightful. 🥴

2023.06.02 00:44 influorescence Housemate leaves toilet seat dirty with his flaky ass crust
To preface this post, I don't consider myself to be a "clean freak" or germaphobe by any means, hell I have ADHD myself so my standards for cleanliness/tidiness are not extreme by any means. That being said, we all have to draw the line somewhere. I moved into my house about 6 months ago, so I have been dealing with this problem every day of those past 6 months. I have a housemate, let's call him Jared, who is in his late 30s and works as a line cook at a nearby country club. After he moved in, I noticed an odor lingering in the bathroom that wouldn't go away. I soon realized that the odor was coming from his towel, which he hangs on the back of the door, and smells like it has never been washed + has some serious mildew stank. Gross. Then I started waking up in the morning to the disgusting sound of him hocking up copious amounts of phlegm in the sink, which he would not wash down the drain but rather leave clinging onto the side of the sink. One time, there was a bloody tonsil stone left on the side of the sink. Fucking rancid. Then, I noticed that everytime id sit down to use the toilet there was a light dusting of crusty skin flakes and scabs that he would deposit on the toilet seat and not wipe up. So every time I used my bathroom I'd have to wipe his nasty ass crust off the seat. (see picture) This is where I draw the line. We are the only two people who use the downstairs bathroom so I know it's from him, and I have no idea what to do other than keep wiping down the seat before I use it, which makes me cringe. I think I'd have maybe a bit of empathy for him if he wasn't such a huge asshole, but this dude has tried to start fights with my other housemates and also never pays his rent or utilities on time. He also recently crashed his car so he's been home constantly, which makes all these issues even worse. I have made a point of avoiding him and my bathroom as much as possible and trying to go other places to do so instead. I am so grossed out by the thought of sitting on the toilet seat and getting his skin flakes all over me. I just had to tell someone because it's driving me absolutely insane and it's so fucking gross but I can't really confront him about it...

2023.06.02 00:44 POUUER Mystery electrical issue in 2012 Honda Accord
I've been chasing an electrical issue in my 2012 Honda Accord for 6-9 months now and the mechanics I've seen multiple times can't narrow down the source. Thankfully it no longer ends up dead on random occasions after sitting for only a day unused, but it will still be dead if I ever leave it sitting for several days unused. My battery has been replaced, the power cable ends were redone to remove corrosion, the starter was replaced, the alternator was tested and is good, I had an after-market anti-theft system removed (recommended by mechanics as a possible power drain source), I never use my car to charge my phone or other devices, and the only remaining after-market thing I have installed is a dashcam, which the mechanics recommended I leave unplugged to test if that's the source, but doing so it didn't make a difference. Most recently I've noticed that if my car is left in auxiliary mode for 5-10 minutes then the radio will completely cut out and lose all signal to all stations, then if I restart my car it's working again. Does anyone have any suggestions about what possible options should be investigated next given all of these things?

2023.06.02 00:44 SupPoEsedlyInsane How can I get rid of the intro movie and why does the game always make me configure base setting at startup?
Every time I launch the game the game makes me set up the first time settings like brightness, speaker vs headphone, distance to monitor etc. It also always compiles files at the beginning. Is there any way to prevent that ? (EA app btw)
In addition it always plays the intro movie after the settings. How can I get rid of that? I have already tried renaming the two mp4 files in the /movies fiolder and I even got a mod that supposedly gets rid of it (.pak version) but neither solution works so far. Any tips?

2023.06.02 00:44 Aggravating-Rich-451 Sweetest mmc award goes to…
I just read two books (one is a series) with the most amazing and sweetest characters ever!!!!!
The first book was the kings captive by K.M. Shea and it was so not what I was expecting but after seeing it recommended here twice I had to read it. It was amazing! There is so much I could say about this book but I will just list a few of what I thought made this series so enjoyable for me.
First was the character development for both the main characters. You could feel the difference in how much they have changed and developed both together and individually as the books go on. The second has to be the relationship between the fmc and everyone around her it was so cute how much they care for her and love her. The way they help her build her confidence and skills and the way they always encourage her even when she herself doesn’t believe she could do it. It was refreshing to see a character like this where she was truly the strongest person without changing anything about herself except her mentality. The way that the mmc is also so encouraging when it comes to her training and wanting her to be at her strongest even when she is technically his enemy.
Also when they had to separate because they both had different priorities and instead of forcing her to stay with him or endangering his ppl to save her siblings he gives her the choice of what she wants to do.
He is also the most loving and protective pet owner it’s so cute.
Second book was one I just finished reading and oh god it was so good. It was captured by the fae beast by Mallory Dunlin.
Loved loved loved this book!!! Dain is absolutely one of my favourite characters right now I love him. He had been through so much and yet was still one of the kindest and most caring when it came to faith. He literally worships her but so does she. It was so lovely and he deserves all the love honestly.
There was a time in like the third chapter where I didn’t want to finish it due to Faith mentioning romance books (how it feels like she is in one) which normally makes me dnf but I went back and read it because the beginning had been so good and I’m so glad I did!!!!
Please read them I’m not the best at explaining but take my word for it and read them. Both mmc are caring and always value the opinion of the fmc and in both books the relationship doesn’t feel one sided where the mmc makes all the decisions because he is in a position of authority. Both fmc are treated as equals to their respective partners. (By their partners and everyone else)
P.S. if you know anymore book like these pls tell me 💕

2023.06.02 00:44 Outrageous-Ask-8877 Season 6 takes! *spoiler alert*
My takes from season 6! Not that anyone cares but I feel like sharing because nobody else in my life watches this show lol.
- Chelsea is so beautiful it literally hurts. She is beyond stunning. I stare at her every time she's on the screen and literally can not believe an actual human being is that gorgeous.
- Nicole is BEYOND jealous of Chrishell. This obviously has nothing to do with past beef. It's completely obvious in the way she hates her for genuinely no reason, the reason she gave didn't even make sense and was easily disputed. Nicole is probably jealous of Chrishell's beauty and her old relationship with Jason. And Chrishell is her only target too? It's easy to spot what a jealous girl looks like, they don't need reasons to hate, they'll make a reason up in their heads to justify themselves. Or she's trying to be the new Christine... which isn't a good look and also isn't working.
- What is the big deal with Chrishell saying she thinks Nicole is on drugs? They all acted like she murdered Nicole's family or something. That's bad for reputation? Yeah, so is Nicole saying that Chrishell was only put on a listing due to Jason's crush on her. Both are terrible for reputation. You could tell that they all just didn't want that dirty laundry aired on television so they were mad at Chrishell, which I get, but it's just funny that Mary was acting like she actually cared about Chrishell hurting Nicole's feelings when in reality she only cared about her own image.
- Amanza's purpose? What is it? They didn't show her involved in real estate at all. She just came into every dramatic situation trying to be the "voice of reason" but really just made everything about herself. I literally couldn't believe when she said Chrishell shouldn't have said Nicole was on drugs because then Amanza's kids would think that because Amanza is friends with Nicole, Amanza is also on drugs. What is wrong with you? You were not involved at all in this! I mean I guess it's possible for kids to think that way, but are they really that complex with thinking? It just seemed like a way to insert herself. I don't think she's necessary to the show. No hate, this is just my opinion.
- I actually kind of liked Bre a lot. I can see both sides of Chelsea and Bre's argument, but in the end, Chelsea should not care THAT MUCH about somebody else's relationship to the point where she's always bringing it up and talking about it. Like you can have your personal opinion but there's no need to make an issue out of it, Bre was right, she doesn't HAVE to understand Bre's relationship...
- Mary clearly does not know what she's doing in terms of being a manager and resolving employee conflict. It was all really unprofessional and you could tell she was overwhelmed by it all. I actually kind of felt bad for her, and Jason's useless in terms of helping her out. It was just kind of sad to see.
- The outfits were too over the top. It really just seems like a fashion show, I liked the earlier seasons when they focused more on real estate than drama. There was barely any real estate in this season IMO.
Ok I'm done... for now!

2023.06.02 00:44 helpimbroken2 Is it harmful to clean my phone with rubbing alcohol everyday?
I will preface this that I have contamination OCD and the pandemic has made it worse for me. As a result, for about a year or so now I've been cleaning my cellphone every day from coming back in from outside. I started with just using Clorox wipes, but now I usually switch back and forth between 70% alcohol and these all-natural disinfectant wipes.
I've just read somewhere this is bad for your phone because it can ruin the olephonic coating on the screen. If this layer is ruined, what does that mean in terms of the phone? I've heard this can just result in the phone screen failing or ending up more dirty, but by any chance, does this also mean that I could be getting exposed to the compounds used to make the screen and such?
Thank you in advance.

2023.06.02 00:43 Pplpleas3r The little lies..
How much tolerance do you have in this lifestyle for someone who tells little lies in the interest of self-preservation?
Yes, I know we are liars in this world. But when someone seems to have a pattern of telling small, poorly thought out, unnecessary lies in the interest of self-preservation or self-protection occasionally, does this immediately ring alarm bells? Do you confront? Or do you quietly consider whether you want to tolerate this behaviour?
I have never met a liar who will admit to their lies...so.... My preference is to move in silence. Gather Intel, observe quietly, make a catalogue of their lies, and then decide what to do next.
What has your experience been?

2023.06.02 00:43 Cant-Ban-Me What are the tax implications of concessional vs non-concessional super contributions for the FHSSS?
I understand the point of making concessional contributions is to take advantage of a lower tax rate of 15% versus whatever your marginal rate is.
If you then claim the FHSSS, you may get taxed a little more as the money comes out, if you’re marginal rate is greater than 30%.
But how does this compare to non-concessional contributions?
If you make a contribution from your after-tax income, you have already paid your marginal tax rate on this amount. I understand these contributions are not taxed going in or out (for the FHSSS).
But what is the tax benefit of a non-concessional contribution, especially if you intend to use the FHSSS to withdraw it later in, and how does this compare to concessional contributions?

2023.06.02 00:42 Frequency_of_Fun Why the ammo changes are fine, sorry you are just bad
We have all heard the argument of "Its to fix the auto, just make that weapon special ammo" argument levied against the upcoming ammo resupply changes. And I feel like that argument is missing the bigger picture. Expanding a bit;
Firstly, making the Auto special ammo could very quickly take it from OP to nigh unusable.
Unless they compensated by giving them a larger supply of ammo from special boxes. Currently if you are running an Auto with no extra large ammo weapons you only get 4 or less ammo from a box (I may be a bit off I don't use the gun very often as I am religiously poor and prefer bomblance/bow) and if it remained that way the entire draw of the auto would be lost. It would go from meta defining to gimmicky and only really useable in one gun fight per match using its load to quickly and taking too long to recover (that's what she said). Because of how much rarer special ammo is in comparison to normal ammo, other special ammo weapons have ways to avoid this. Bows have reusable rounds, bomblance has a powerful melee, and weapons running custom ammo usually have a good ammo economy, and have the benefit of having special effects like poison, bleed, fire, or stat buffs. The closest weapons would be the Dolch and the Nitro. The Dolch compensates with its insane stat line for a weapon of its size. The Nitro is probably the closest thing to a gimmick weapon that works, That gimmick being its insane damage and range despite a lack of a scope. So something would likely need to be done, probably a buff to how much ammo the auto gets per box, in order for it to not be relegated to a frustrating or boring gimmick weapon.
Secondly, running extra ammo isn't just bad when the meta does it you hypocrite.
Yea, I said it, what are you gonna do? I am behind 6 VPNs right now nerd. All jokes aside, running weapons with identical ammo as a secondary in order to boost the ammo of your primary is uninteresting and diminishes the combat use of all small ammo weapons. It supports the Long ammo meta by allowing players to side line the entire weakness of larger weapons, that being less ammo availability. If you are complaining about the ammo changes when you run a Lebel or Mosin with a Uppercut or Sparks pistol YOU are part of the problem and why they decided to do this rather than just make the Auto special ammo.
I understand that my first point is certainly the weaker of the two, but I will die on the hill of the second. I do legitimately believe that these changes are a massive step in weakening the iron grip of the long ammo meta.
Now as to the exact numbers they should use for the resupplys? I am not in tune enough with the meta for specifics like that but they look fine to me.

2023.06.02 00:42 crouchyjr Myself (M25) and my girlfriend (M28) in difficult situation because of roommate and his ex
So a brief preface to this situation: My best friend (and roommate) was recently dumped by his girlfriend out of the blue and for no apparent reason — I happen to be dating her best friend so obviously that makes things very messy.
My girlfriend is still very good friends with my roommate and friend who we’ll call G and wants to maintain said friendship with him, which I personally believe is no issue. G didn’t do anything wrong and was ultimately the victim of the breakup. Where the issue comes in is how the ex feels about this, last weekend my girlfriend and I invited G over for drinks at her place with a few other friends. For the sake of transparency my gf was upfront about this with the ex that he had been invited for drinks as he is a friend of ours. The ex absolutely lost her shit on my gf (the ex was invited earlier but couldn’t come because she was working in which case G wouldn’t have come).
She pretty much started guilt tripping my gf saying that was totally unacceptable and frankly weird for this to be something my gf to do. Accused her of not giving a shit about their friendship and that she doesn’t give a shit about her well-being and mental health. Hurtful and manipulative stuff was said which left my gf feeling extremely down. To make matters worse, the ex completely flipped her shit at G and raged at him saying he better not dare do that again.
How on earth do we approach this situation — is there a scenario where we can make something work for all parties?
I personally think the ex is horribly toxic based on this and previous experiences, but it’s unreasonable to expect my gf to cut this woman off.
Tldr; roommates ex gf being horrible to her best friend (my gf) because we want to maintain friendly relationship with roommate.

2023.06.02 00:42 LPJCB Help me ask for a raise?
Background: I was recruited by former colleagues to a new company and project 6 months ago. The project is a mess, but my work and my team have been well-received throughout. In a time when the client was somewhat unhappy I was given kudos and the company is trying to hire another person under me. It’s kind of a situation where the client is challenging but she and I have a good relationship so the project is looking to increase my responsibilities partially to appease her. My manager’s last day is tomorrow, and I am taking on a number of her responsibilities in addition to my own, including managing a new team. I know she was making 16% more than me at my time of hire. Since the work is project based, the company’s titles are somewhat arbitrary, but project-wise I would say I am getting a promotion. The company does not have a standardized performance review/raise/promotion protocol, but due to the expanded role and responsibilities requesting to be fairly compensated seems appropriate.
If you were in this position, when would you ask for a raise? What percentage increase would you request (expecting them to counter with a lower offer)? I haven’t been in this position before and would appreciate advice!

2023.06.02 00:41 danisoffthewall Question about paid training?
I just started at Petsmart near the end of last month. I did my videos that I needed to do and did the training for Pet Care recently. Does PetSmart do paid training? If it is paid, when do I receive the money? And will it be what I am going to be making an hour?
I haven’t asked anyone at my location and nobody has said anything to me about it.
I am a part-time Pet Care Specialist.

2023.06.02 00:41 AlexHero64 Is anyone else just not enjoying their time with the new season?
I don't like the new season of Clone High. I haven't laughed a single time (apart from the Weezer bit) and it's just painful to sit through.
I thought that maybe I outgrew the comedic stylings of the show after all I was 12 when I watched the show for the first time. Maybe my nostalgia was just clouding my judgement for a mediocre show. So I decided to re-watch some classic episodes and I laughed my ass off. The first season is still comedic gold. A perfect season of television with not a single bad episode and so many quoteable moments. Then I watched over the new season and I felt the same way I originally felt.
I first thought they may have hired random freelancers like the Simpsons does but after looking it up they use the same writers as the first season so I don't even know what the hell went wrong here. The 4th episode of S2 (which was fucking boring and mindless) has the same head writer as the Ponce de Leon episode and the PJXT episode which has the classic "Nothing Bad ever happens to the Kennedys" bit. Hell, even Lord and Miller go from writing one of the best goddamn films I've ever seen (well Lord at least wrote it), to writing Episode 1 of Season 2. I wouldn't even believe that they were written by the same guys...
I don't get how the same writers can write worse jokes after having 20 years of experience. This new season has been nothing special and feels like an insult to that perfect first season. Honestly, if I knew the show was gonna be resurrected like this I'd prefer if it stayed dead.
Anyone having any similar thoughts because I'm just seeing an overwhelmingly positive reception to the new season and I think I might be in a small minority?

2023.06.02 00:41 Tardyninja10 Concerned about Heat
Not necessarily of my components by the room i use my pc in. Currently I have a Thermaltake V21 i have had it for what a long time.
My current components are: i5-13600k, 3080ti founders, 1000w corsair atx psu.
My problem attached to my bedroom there is a small roughly 5ft by 4ft space with my desk and pc my room isnt massive but it isnt small either. When playing games for an hour or so it get unbearably HOT, AC in the house rarely helps a fan does but i use open back headphones when playing i have resorted to playing mostly at night so i can open my window to let some of the heat out.
I know changing form factor will not change how much heat is produced but should i switch to an AIO i was hoping to use a Meshroom S, maybe put it on a shelf over my desk so i feel. the heat a little less (currently under my desk). I prefer air coolers by a large margin but it makes it difficult to enjoy games so if i must i will strongly consider an AIO
thoughts?

2023.06.02 00:41 CivetKitty Elite levels and card evolutions: are they enough to save the game?
Before I start this long post, I want to thank everyone who flock to posts like this just to say "geT gUd BrUh," because these people are very helpful on proving my point. I also like the changes the devs mentioned recently, especially the upgrade cost reduction and the 2nd Slash Royale. But I think it is still not enough to solve the underlying issue that is plagueing the game.
1. The Disconnect from YouTube
These days, a great majority of a game's publicity comes from ads and content creation. Even ads are being less trustworthy because of low quality ripoffs of ripoffs of ripoffs of ripoffs of ripoffs of ripoffs of... You get the point. Many ads are straight up lying about the game they are actually promoting, which Clash Royale also does by the way. When I saw a CR ad that literally portrays 2 giants walking to opposite towers as kissing, I was utterly disgusted.
That leaves content creation to be the most positive way for promoting a game, and the best way of gaming content creation is to create a symbiotic relationship between the creator and the audiance. In the past, this relationship was achieved via deck showcases and tutorials, but these things aren't that useful anymore, which the reasons I'll explain on a later part of this post. The more card showcase and creator to audiance interaction, the more traction it will bring to these videos, making creators grow, encouraging the algorythm to show more CR content, and therefore, pulling more people into the game and videos about it.
However, for the last few months, videos milking on the "Update for Losers" and the state of the game has been doing better than simple deck showcases since the UfL was gaining a lot of searches. Maybe I should take back my previous statement as bragging about your house burning down is truely the most effective way of promotion. When
u/Clash_with_Ash showed the
Google Trends data of the UfL, I immediately reminded myself that raw search count data cannot display bias.
The UfL made a bump on the graph, and so did the war in Sudaan.
2. The Rising Wall
Thie reason why deck showcases aren't that popular anymore is the rising barrier to entry. It's getting harder and harder for newer players to enter late game, while experienced players are deminishing and slowly losing the need to search for new decks because of their increased skill. Gradually, the number of deck showcases deminished, making new players unable to find up to date tutorials. As a result, the symbiotic relationship between the content creators and the influx of new players is broken while the barrier to entry into the "Kool Kids' Klub" is increasing.
Even worse, the "Kool Kids' Klub" constantly bashing on new players are discouraging community interactions. This is why I thanked these people at the beginning of the post by the way. The more you hate on noob strats, the more you turn them away from the game. The more the quitters, the faster the game will reach its demise. I kind of understand why you are being so toxic though. he reason is the midladder meta, something that should not have existed in the first place.
3. The midladder meta
The midladder meta (midladder in short) is a beginner strategy that was prevented evolution and became manifested into a meta. This meta, defined mainly by splash and swarm, is a natural way of learning the game since it is easy for beginners to pick up and get used to the game's system.
However, the absurdly high card level costs and the fact that the game requires synergies between these cards discourages a lot of people to explore new decks and branch off into different archetypes. Even worse, the fact that trophies were used in both the sweaty ranked mode and progression made players more unwilling to explore new decks, extending this tendancy to a full blown meta. Now, all that new players know of this godforesaken meta and tutorials that look like they are talking about an alternate universe.
Midladder, despite being the same for years, is an uncharted jungle where the only guidance is yourself. It should not be mocked to death, but rather, be thuroughly looked into and broken down bit by bit until it is completely removed in the future. For example, when you look at the
deckshop.pro page for the Wizard and look at the section for counters for defending wizard, we can see 4 hard counters, Tornado from Arena 15, Poison from Arena 9, Lightning from Arena 8, and Miner from Arena 11. Which arena does Wizard come from? 4! This makes the perfect breeding ground for overleveled Wizard with weak counters. Also. I only looked at the defensive side since Wizard is a defensive card, and this stat also applies to this card being a support card for beatdown. Anyways,
counters for defending Witch are even worse, with only lightning and Rocket showing up as hard counters. 1 redeeming factor of Rocket is that it comes from 1 arena lower(6 vs 5), but the long delay and the small AoE makes it a low priority lfor new players to upgrade. Pekka is shown as a
counter to a defending Mega Knight, but the high cost is risky for a swarm oriented meta.
4. A Glimpse of Hope
I think the Update for Losers is an attempt for the devs to acknowledge this issue and try out conservative changes. Path of Legends aimed to split the competative rank system from the progression based trophy system. Not only that, The trophy system was tweaked to prevent a full tilt from becoming a bottomless pit, minimizing huge losses in progression. Although they messed up on level capping the trophy system and nerfing the free pass, I think they were on to something with the paid pass as well. I think the Book of Books was a bad design, especially when it comes to champions. Maxing out a champion without this item will take years, and even more if wild cards are not used as well. Nerfing the paid pass tried to lessen the gap between the spenders and F2P players, but the devs clearly didn't think of existing players and their overleveled cards.
Slash Royale 2.0 and the gold cost discounts is another baby step towards solving midladder, but I think this is still not enough. The game needs a more radical shift in order to save itself from burning down, and my pick is to just remove card levels entirely and tie it to the king level. Or at least completely copy over the leveling System from Brawl Stars. Brawler levels are much more tolerable since 1 brawler equals 1 deck. It makes fair match making a lot easier. However, CR has 8 cards to consider in 1 deck, so I don't think card levels really fit the game. Card levels should be transfered into king levels and make it 150 levels max instead of 15. To prevent power creep, each level should increase the stats by 1% instead of 10. Although this change needs careful consideration for compensating, it is way better to make midladder disappear and make deck diversity a universal trait.

2023.06.02 00:41 DIdirectors Thoughts on Analog vs rapid trigger for fps games?
So now we have two options for shooters. Analog movement (sometimes depending on game) and rapid trigger.
Got to try both on my Wooting one recently after the software patch recently and I gotta say I really like both but for different reasons. Bf2042 seems to handle analog input pretty well if you correctly set the anti dead zone. And it even can feel pretty good for peeking corners. That being said rapid trigger also feels pretty phenomenal as well. Movements are crisp and light. And I kinda feel like my ability to survive is enhanced with it on.
Another shooter I play is insurgency sandstorm. Here I thought analog movement would make the experience play better with slower peaks and what not. But I’m finding it makes seemingly little difference. The ability to instantly change direction to get back in cover seems a little better with rapid trigger though
Final game I’ll bring up is planetside 2 it’s my historical game of choice during the past few years but I’ve definitely dropped off to try other stuff in the last two years. It’s ability to use analog movement has been odd in the past with it both working and not working. Even when it did work there was a really weird dead zone we’re there def was analog movement but it felt way to sensitive. (so maybe using the anti dead zone could alleviate that.) Upon returning I realized the game also had a really slow transition when changing from left and right strafing that almost felt like input lag. Trying rapid trigger with it brought it closer to feeling like a normal game. (My thoughts are that the speed of input I’m able to be achieved from rapid trigger made up for this delay but it’s hard to say.
So what does everyone else tend to lean towards and do you think there are any advantages to using analog movement over rapid trigger for shooters?

2023.06.02 00:40 scaredandalone2008 New ED video..
Tw/ED Not sure if anyone has seen her new video yet but it’s extremely triggering. Features body checking, scale/weight checks, etc. I reported it but looking out for other people who might see it. Her posting things like this is sick. I think she can’t get worse and then she always does.
