Implausibility of a Net-Zero Carbon Energy Future

2023.03.29 11:51 greyfalcon333 Implausibility of a Net-Zero Carbon Energy Future

The WSJ Editorial Board writes, the implausibility of a net-zero carbon energy future is becoming so obvious that even Europeans are starting to notice. Witness the weekend decision to step back from the ban on internal-combustion automobile engines that the European Union had intended to implement by 2035.
The eurocrats in Brussels had formulated the ban as part of their plan to reach net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. But what regulators imagine would replace conventional engines remains a mystery. Battery technologies don’t exist to replace fossil fuels in driving distance or ease of refueling, and no one can say if or when such batteries will materialize.
EVs also need subsidies for consumers and for production across the supply chain to be profitable. What's more, EVs also require rare-earth minerals often sourced from dirty mines in China.
For these reasons... plus a strong dose of old-fashioned commercial self-interest... Germany’s auto industry objected to the ban on internal-combustion engines, and it’s good they did.
Resistance from Berlin and several other European gov'ts has forced Brussels into all but abandoning its engine ban.
Consumers will be allowed to buy internal-combustion autos as long as those cars can run on synthetic fuels, which are fuels made from captured carbon or renewable energy. Brussels still seems to hope that these cars will run only on such “e-fuels” by that deadline. But doubts about the technological feasibility of that pledge may explain why environmental groups were aghast at the decision.
The usual suspects complain this is another earth-destroying crony gift from Berlin to its auto industry—as if there’s no cronyism or corporate welfare involved in subsidizing EVs that carry their own high environmental costs.

The Electric Vehicle Welfare State: Car Makers Back the Biden Climate Agenda in Return for Subsidies and Higher Consumer Prices

The reality is that the big winners are consumers, who will enjoy a wider range of motors and fuel types with which to balance their mobility needs and their green aspirations.
To Sum It Up: European's will have a luxury that consumers won’t enjoy in California, Oregon and Washington state, where bans on new cars with internal-combustion-engines remain on the books for 2035. You know your state capital has taken a wrong turn when your lawmakers would do well to learn a lesson from Brussels.
Our Take 1: We'd wager Europeans will be purchasing... and filling up more with petrol than syn fuels... their internal-combustion vehicles well past 2035. After all, Europeans make some of the best engineered vehicles on the planet. Why would they throw one of the few competitive industries they have overboard?
Our Take 2: Kudos to German automakers for speaking up. Failure to do so would have led to the EU committing one of the great unforced errors of all time.

How to take these stud bolts out of K24
I am replacing my valve cover stud on my K24z2. I tried removing stud #8 loosened it it came out half way up but it feels like something is holding it in wouldn't come out of the timing chain guide plate. I did not however try to remove the chain guide to see if it would come out and decided to ask reddit to be safe. Can you take stud #8 out without messing with the chain guide and bolt #16?

2023.03.29 06:52 Acquis_Compliance EU RoHS Compliance in 2023: What to Expect

For the upcoming year, the Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive is currently being reviewed by the EU. A proposed revision that would include the entire RoHS directive is the most significant change. Although the revision proposal has been delayed until Q2 of 2023, manufacturers must be prepared for numerous additional changes. Keep perusing to advance more about what's in store from EU RoHS consistence in 2023.
Which recent changes have been made to the EU RoHS Directive? A few modifications to the EU RoHS order are being proposed in 2023, including the expansion of two new confined substances, different proposed exceptions, and exclusion terminations. Our group of specialists arranged the main updates to assist you with getting ready for what's coming this year.
Proposed Substance Increases The European Commission has proposed adding two new substances to the confined substance list: TBBPA and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) are two examples. The EU RoHS would increase the number of restricted substances from 10 to 12 by including TBBPA and MCCPs.
TBBPA is a fire resistant usually used to decrease the combustibility of plastics and engineered gums in purchaser items, including electrical and electronic gear parts. Due to the fact that it is a well-known carcinogen and has the potential to harm human health, it is being considered for inclusion on the restricted substances list. Plastics, rubber, adhesives, paints, and other products frequently contain MCCPs, which are industrial chemicals used as plasticizers or flame retardants. Additionally, they are utilized as lubricants or coolants in metal operations. Because they are thought to be bioaccumulative and toxic to the environment, MCCPs are being considered for inclusion on the restricted substances list. Exemption Expirations Numerous exemptions in Annex III and Annex IV are non-renewable and will expire in 2023. The vast majority of the exceptions apply to RoHS classification 8.
Renewals of Exemptions Several exemptions from Annex III and Annex IV are currently being considered for renewal. A new exemption with a narrower scope is anticipated to replace some exemptions. The requested renewals include frequently used exemptions like:
6(a)- I, 6(b)- I, 6(b)- II, and 6(c) 7(a) 7(c)- I and 7(c)- II Exception Updates Add-on IV Add-on IV of the EU RoHS Mandate, which applies to clinical gadgets and observing and control instruments, has been refreshed with another exclusion:
Exemption 48: Lead in electrical connections to bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide (BSCCO) superconductor cables and wires. On June 30, 2027, this exemption will end.
Additionally, the following additions have been made to Exemption 27:
(c) MRI devices with integrated coils that are used in medical magnetic resonance imaging equipment in magnetic fields within a sphere of one millimeter around the isocenter of the magnet and for which the Declaration of Conformity is issued for the first time before June 30th, 2024, or (d) MRI devices with integrated coils that are used in magnetic fields that are issued for the first time before September 23rd, 2022.
On June 30, 2027, Exemption 27 comes to an end.
The provisions of both exemptions must be implemented by EU members on March 1, 2023.
Annex III A new exemption has been added following the evaluation of an exemption request:
9(a)- III - Up to 0.7 % hexavalent chromium by weight, utilized as an anticorrosion specialist in the functioning liquid of the carbon steel fixed circuit of gas retention heat siphons for space and water warming.
The exemption is only available for Category 1 and will be gone on December 31, 2026.
The provisions must be implemented by EU members on September 1, 2023.
Exemption Proposals Proposed Exemption 49 It is anticipated that the EU Commission will approve a draft delegated directive that would exempt some rheometers from the requirement to adhere to restrictions on mercury. The assessment that mercury melt pressure transducers can no longer be used in place of capillary rheometers at temperatures greater than 300°C (572°F) and pressures greater than 1000 bar is the basis for the proposal.
Exemption 49 would be added to Annex IV of the RoHS Directive as follows if adopted as planned:
Mercury in melt pressure transducers for capillary rheometers at pressures greater than 1000 bar and temperatures greater than 300°C (572°F).
The exemption, which would apply to Category 9 and be approved by the commission in the first quarter of 2023, would be in effect until December 31, 2024, unless it were to be renewed.
Proposed Exemption 41a A delegated directive that would exempt some sensors from having to comply with lead restrictions is expected to be approved by the EU Commission. The assessment that lead replacement in sensor cards analyzing the parameters creatinine and blood urea nitrogen is not sufficiently advanced, but is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, prompted the proposal.
Exemption 41a would be added to Annex IV of the RoHS Directive as follows if adopted as planned:
Lead is used as a thermal stabilizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is also used as the base material for amperometric, potentiometric, and conductometric electrochemical sensors. These sensors are used in in-vitro diagnostic medical devices to measure creatinine and blood urea nitrogen in whole blood.
Unless it is renewed, exemption 41a would apply to category 8 and end on December 31, 2023.

The EU’s Data Act Balancing Regulations and Innovation in the Age of Smart Contracts
By Hein Dauven Mar 28, 2023 - Rotterdam
The European Union's Data Act seeks to give people more control over what can be done with their data, particularly in relation to IoT. However, the legislation has been criticized for its "one size fits all" approach, with some arguing that it lacks clarity. One of the criticisms is that, once again, the technical side was not involved in the creation of the legislation, and this lack of knowledge is exactly why it lacks any clarity. This article will explore the potential introduction of a kill switch and pause functionality in smart contracts proposed in the act, analyzing how these features can both protect and impede innovation, and whether alternative solutions might be more appropriate.
The EU Data Act
The Rationale for a kill switch and pausing
The EU's desire for a kill switch and pausing functionality stems from the need to protect users from potential risks associated with smart contracts, particularly in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). While the Data Act does not explicitly mention blockchain-based smart contracts, the lack of clarity in the legislation has raised concerns for those in the blockchain industry.
As the blockchain landscape continues to grow and becomes more intertwined with the traditional financial system, the potential for systemic risks increases. In this context, the introduction of a kill switch could be seen as a way for the EU to mitigate the risk of catastrophic failure in the financial system. By providing the means to rapidly respond to emergencies, the EU aims to maintain trust and security from their perspective while ensuring that the integration of blockchain-based smart contracts with traditional financial systems does not jeopardize the stability of the overall financial system. However, striking the right balance between regulation and innovation is crucial to avoid stifling the growth and potential benefits of blockchain technology.
Alternatives to the proposed functionalities
Despite the potential benefits, critics argue that kill switches and pausing functionality may introduce friction and limit the advantages of smart contracts. Alternatives could include greater reliance on social consensus, with control over smart contracts distributed among a variety of stakeholders. This approach could enhance trust while maintaining the decentralized nature of blockchain technology.
Who is in control?
The question of who should have control over kill switches and pausing functionality raises concerns about trust and centralization. Three main options exist: single user control, multi-signature (multi-sig) control, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Each option has its own implications for trust and the speed at which the kill switch or pause can be executed.
Single user control: In this scenario, one individual or entity has the authority to activate the kill switch or pause functionality of the smart contract. While this option allows for the fastest response time in case of an emergency, it centralizes power and control, potentially raising concerns about trust and vulnerability to malicious actions/actors. Moreover, the single user may not have the necessary expertise to make the best decision in every situation, which could lead to suboptimal outcomes. There’s also the risk of loss of the private key attached to this single user, which could make executing the functions impossible in the future.
Multi-signature (multi-sig) control: Multi-sig control requires multiple users to authorize the activation of a kill switch or pause functionality, usually through a predefined threshold of signatures, such as a 3-of-5 or 4-of-7 scheme where a majority of participants must approve actions. This approach distributes decision-making power and reduces the risk of misuse or errors. Trust is enhanced as no single user can unilaterally control the system. However, the speed of execution may be slower compared to single user control, as the approval process involves multiple parties and potential delays in coordinating their actions. In case of one of the users losing their keys, it’s still possible to get to a predefined threshold or to swap out users if need be if their key is lost for example, providing a layer of redundancy.
Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs): DAOs involve a more decentralized approach to control, with decisions made by a collective of stakeholders who vote on proposals using predefined rules and governance mechanisms. This approach can enhance trust by distributing decision-making power among the community and/or companies, reducing the risk of centralization and malicious actions. However, the execution speed may be the slowest of the three options, as the voting process can be time-consuming and may require broad consensus before a decision is reached. DAOs are often unfamiliar to regulators, resulting in a gray area for liability and requiring education about their unique decentralized structure before decision-making processes can be effectively understood and managed. The US state of Wyoming is the first government body to recognize DAOs as legal entities.
Each option for controlling kill switches and pausing functionality in smart contracts has its own trade-offs in terms of trust and speed. Striking the right balance between these factors is crucial for ensuring that kill switches and pause functions can protect users without stifling innovation or compromising the benefits of decentralization.
Social consensus and its role in trust
Social consensus, a concept rooted in the idea of collective decision-making, involves the participation of various stakeholders in reaching an agreement on a specific issue. Social consensus can facilitate a democratic and transparent approach to managing key features such as the proposed kill switch and pause functionality, in favor of outsourcing it to a new bureaucratic entity with sweeping control over any deployed smart contract.
Social consensus can play a crucial role in building trust in systems with kill switches and pause functionality, particularly in the context of the Data Act and its goals. Distributing control over these features among various stakeholders can ensure that decisions are made in a more decentralized manner and transparently, fostering trust in both the regulatory benefits put forth by the Data Act and the decentralized nature of the blockchain ecosystem.
The Data Act aims to provide a framework that both safeguards users from potential data risks while ideally also preserving the innovative potential of smart contracts and other digital technologies. By incorporating social consensus into the decision-making process for kill switches and pause functionality, the EU can strike a balance between protecting users and preventing undue centralization of power that goes against the core ethos of the crypto community.
In a smart contract backed by a DAO/social consensus, the participants have a vested interest in ensuring the contract's integrity and security. Should the smart contract be hacked, contain a bug, or be used in a fraudulent way, the stakeholders can collectively decide to pause or activate the kill switch to protect their interests and prevent further damage. This approach aligns with the incentives of the participants, as they all share the responsibility of maintaining the contract's integrity and value.
Social consensus empowers the participants in a smart contract to act in their collective best interest, providing a robust safeguard against potential threats. It is an approach that would not compromise on the values espoused by the crypto community, while at the same time getting to the heart of the issue that the EU wants to solve with a kill switch and pause functionality. Good faith actors would choose to comply and create a vibrant and well informed community that can harbor the security of its own protocols.
Legal entities and liability
Involving legal entities in multi-sig or DAO arrangements can provide a layer of accountability and liability protection, helping to maintain trust in the system while still offering the benefits of decentralization. Within the context of the Data Act, companies can leverage the concept of a DAO or multi-sig to appoint the appropriate individuals within their organization, as well as external auditors, to oversee the kill switch or pause functionality of smart contracts.
For instance, a company could create a multi-sig arrangement where key personnel, such as executives or board members, along with external auditors or legal representatives, are designated as signatories with the authority to activate the kill switch or pause a smart contract. These individuals should be known and legally accountable for their actions, ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering trust in the system.
Another approach involves forming a DAO as a legal entity, making it liable for the functioning of a smart contract. This could be achieved by registering the DAO as a legal entity, such as a corporation or a limited liability company, subject to the jurisdiction and regulatory requirements where it operates. By doing so, the DAO would be held accountable for its actions, and the participants would be required to adhere to relevant regulations and legal obligations.
In either case, the involvement of legal entities in the governance of smart contracts under the Data Act can help strike a balance between the decentralized nature of blockchain technology and the need for regulatory compliance and accountability. By combining the benefits of decentralization with a framework of legal responsibility, companies can foster trust in their smart contract systems while ensuring adherence to the Data Act's requirements and protecting users from potential risks.
Implications for composability
Composability refers to the ability of smart contracts to seamlessly interact with one another, building upon each other's functionality to create more complex applications and systems. This property allows developers to create modular and reusable components that can be combined in various ways.
Introducing a kill switch or pausing function can pose risks to the composability of smart contracts, potentially leading to a cascading effect of affected contracts. When a smart contract is paused or terminated using a kill switch, it may disrupt the normal functioning of other contracts that depend on it, causing a chain reaction of disruptions throughout the interconnected system of smart contracts.
For example, consider a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform where multiple smart contracts are designed to work together, such as lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and stablecoins. If a critical smart contract within this ecosystem is paused or terminated, it could prevent other contracts from executing their functions, leading to a breakdown in the entire platform. Users may be unable to access their funds or execute transactions, resulting not only in a breach of trust but potentially also a loss of funds. Something the Data Act is supposed to prevent, not cause.
Understanding these risks and their potential impact on innovation is crucial for striking the right balance between security and flexibility. While the implementation of a kill switch or pausing function may provide valuable safeguards against hacks, fraud, and unforeseen consequences, it is essential to consider the potential disruptions and unintended consequences that these mechanisms might introduce to the composability of smart contracts.
In order to minimize the risks associated with kill switches and pausing functions, regulators and developers must explore alternative solutions or implement safeguards that minimize the potential cascading effects while still providing a level of protection and control that could meet the regulatory goals of the Data Act.
Mutability versus immutability in the Data Act
The Data Act's impact on mutability and immutability of data raises important questions about the extent to which smart contracts can be modified. Striking the right balance between adaptability and security is essential for future innovation.
In the context of smart contracts, the immutability of the code and the tamper-proofnature of the transaction history are key features that ensure trust and security within the blockchain ecosystem. The code of a smart contract cannot be changed after it has been deployed, and the transaction history remains unalterable. However, smart contracts do carry state, which can be mutable. This means that the current state of a smart contract can be updated or modified, but the history of those changes remains unchangeable.
Although the code of a smart contract is immutable, developers can design contracts with a certain degree of flexibility, allowing for upgrades or modifications to adapt to changing circumstances, add features, to fix potential bugs or vulnerabilities. This can be achieved through mechanisms such as upgradeable contract proxies or contract modules that can be replaced or updated without altering the core contract logic.
In the context of the Data Act, balancing the mutable state of smart contracts and the immutability of their code and transaction history becomes crucial, as the legislation seeks to protect user data and maintain a secure environment. On one hand, allowing for some level of flexibility in the contract state enables developers to respond to unforeseen issues or regulatory requirements, ensuring that smart contracts remain compliant and functional. On the other hand, preserving the immutability of the code and transaction history is essential to maintaining the trust and security that blockchain technology offers.
On-chain and off-chain data
Understanding the distinction between on-chain and off-chain data is vital for implementing the Data Act. This distinction has implications for how data is stored, accessed, and regulated within the blockchain ecosystem and how dApps handle state.
On-chain data refers to information that is stored directly on the blockchain. This includes transaction history, smart contract code, and any other data that is recorded and maintained within the distributed ledger. On-chain data is immutable and transparent, ensuring the security of the blockchain. A contract can change its state, but this state change is recorded as history and observable.
Off-chain data, on the other hand, refers to information that is stored outside of the blockchain. This can include databases, file storage systems like IPFS, or any other external data sources. Off-chain data can be mutable and the change of data can be done in an untraceable way. It allows for greater flexibility and adaptability, which comes with trade-offs in terms of trust and security, as off-chain data is not subject to the same transparency and traceability as on-chain data.
In the context of the Data Act, the distinction between on-chain and off-chain data is crucial, as it has implications for the storage and regulation of sensitive information such as trade secrets. While the Data Act may require certain data to be kept confidential, it is possible for developers to circumvent these requirements by storing sensitive information off-chain. This approach can offer greater control over access to the data and help maintain trade secret protection. However, it also raises questions about the transparency and regulatory compliance of such systems. User data can be tampered with unbeknownst to them and with no verifiable trace.
The role of Zero-Knowledge Proofs and RegDeFi
Zero-knowledge proof enabled and Regulated DeFi infrastructures like Dusk Network can make compliance with the Data Act easier by providing selective disclosure, privacy and visibility. This technology can ensure that off-chain modifications are legitimate while still protecting sensitive data, such as trade secrets.
Dusk Network leverages selective disclosure to minimize the exposure of sensitive information, allowing only authorized parties to access specific data within a smart contract. Through the use of zero-knowledge proofs, Dusk enables trade secrets to remain confidential while still providing the necessary transparency for regulatory compliance. This approach ensures that sensitive information is not unnecessarily exposed, thus reducing the risk of unauthorized access or misuse.
Additionally, Dusk Network's built-for-compliance smart contracts introduce cleaner roles for auditors and other stakeholders, enabling them to selectively view parts of a smart contract that others cannot access. These roles can be, and in Dusk’s XSC standard are, extended to include roles that allow the pausing of smart contract execution.
Furthermore, the use of zero-knowledge proofs and selective disclosure in Dusk Network can help reduce fraud risks associated with smart contracts. By allowing only authorized parties to view and modify specific data, the technology minimizes the potential for tampering, unauthorized access, or manipulation. This ensures the integrity of the smart contracts and enhances the overall security of the blockchain ecosystem.
In summary, Dusk Network can help address the challenges posed by the Data Act by providing selective privacy, visibility, verifiable computation and built-for-compliance smart contracts. These technologies offer a balanced approach to maintaining the confidentiality of trade secrets and enabling auditors to perform their roles effectively while reducing fraud risks and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

2023.03.29 05:39 broski1911 What's going on with Toyota?

Went to Toyota showroom yesterday with my uncle. He is planning to replace his corolla with a hybrid vehicle. It was a massive letdown since the waiting times on all their vehicles are CRAZY.
Hyryder V 15 months
Hyryder G 11 months
Hycross VX hybrid 22 months
So I am wondering what is going on with Toyota? What is the reason behind such high waiting periods? I am sure it is not because of the sheer order volume because I am not seeing that many vehicles on the road.
Are they slowing down production to take an exit from India?

2023.03.29 05:10 n_zM9_O9lKB_t Mechanic's experience with recent Toyotas made in Japan vs. North America

I am looking to buy a New 2023 RAV4 hybrid. These days they are made in Kentucky, Ontario, or Japan. No matter the assembly location, the RAV4H are REALLY hard to come by these days, but the Japan-assembled ones (VIN starts with a J) even more so.
In searching the /rav4club subreddit and the rav4world forum, I have gathered an overall confusing consensus on whether the Japan-made ones are superior to the North American ones. Many posts swear by the Japanese superiority, noting a national pride in their assembly and the overall meticulousness/quality control at Japanese plants that is not replicated in North America, despite the standardization of parts and robotics. Then there is this video by an automotive engineer comparing a USA to Japan-made one and concluding basically it wouldn't hurt to go Japanese if you have the option: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELTfxyC29VU
There are several comments in the same forums that argue Toyota anywhere holds the same manufacturing standards. But at the end of the day it's all anecdotal (albeit still valuable especially when coming from mechanics).
Could any Toyota mechanics who have serviced the current generation of RAV4 hybrids specifically (2019-2023) please comment on their experience with the North American models and how it compares to the Japanese ones if you've noticed a pattern?
And I have heard from many dealers that Toyota is trying to make more in North America recently in 2023 as the Japanese (and associated shipping times) cannot keep up with incredibly high demand in USA for the hybrids - does this mean they are rushing and cutting corners to amp up production here?
Thank you in advance to all perspectives!

2023.03.29 04:42 pj1699 Next Steps

I am 24, I make 66k a year and I have a house with currently 100-150k in equity. I recently took out a $35k HELOC to replace my AC and dropped the remaining amount on my mortgage. Moved my savings (~$6000) into the HELOC.
I am saving for a ring and a wedding this year. I am also trying to fill up the HELOC to drop another $20k on the mortgage next year or maybe get a second property. I don't have any real emergency savings. I dont have a 401k or a Roth IRA worth mentioning. I don't like the idea of not being able to access my investments before I'm 60. Have about $30k in other investments
I started driving for Uber a couple months ago doing 30-40 hours a week pulling in an extra $900-$1200 per week.
I am feeling burnt out. I want to be a millionaire by 30 but I feel like 6 years is not enough time.
Thought I would come to a place of like minded people to ask what would your next steps be in my situation. My plan for the last 5 years has been to get a house to get a HELOC to chain invest properties. 2023.03.29 04:33 br1ck_city4 Preventative maintenance for a summer of hard driving

Hi all you danger ranger owners. I’ll be graduating college this summer and will be daily driving my truck 30 min both ways 5 days/week at my new job. Between graduation and work, I’ll have a month off that I plan to do several PM repairs and am looking for any recommendations I can do to make sure this truck doesn’t break down before I can get a new car and keep the truck on the side.
The truck is a 2010 4.0 5 speed 4wd with 150k miles
Some repairs I’ve done already: Tstat housing Slave cylindeclutch/trans service Diff service Caliper replacement and brake job E brake hardware
Some repairs I plan to do: Plugs and coils Timing chain tensioners U/L ball joints front CV joints New tires
Can anyone think of anything else to add/subtract from the to do list? I’m terrified that my timing cover will blow before I can buy a new car. I know those are an issue with the 4.0. Is there any good PM for this? Thanks for any advice!

2023.03.29 02:52 Lymilark Descendant Character Concept-Benjamin

This character was made because I really wanted to see one specific mechanic come to life in a Descendant. It’s a mechanic that isn’t seen in that many shooters period and is by far my favorite thing of all time, but admittedly in my attempt to make that mechanic work there may be some flaws in the design. I hope this remains an interesting read regardless.
Appearance wise they’re a small slovenly character with droopy dark purple hair. They wear a heavy trench coat with a strange interdimensional portal inside of it that he can communicate with. The general inspiration for this design is supernatural noir detective.
Passive(Hidden Arsenal)-Whenever Benjamin swaps weapons the gun he swapped into will be instantly reloaded if it has an empty magazine. This ability will have a 20s cooldown. Additionally he has one more passive that increases his Weapon Swap Speed by 40% if the weapon he is changing out has an empty magazine. If he swaps out a weapon while this condition is fulfilled the animation for the weapon swap will be changed to the gun disappearing in a puff of smoke only to be replaced with a different gun.
Notes: This mechanic is largely inspired by games like Sanctum 2 where reloading occurs while a gun is unequipped, but is slightly weaker due to the fact it will only reload one weapon and has a cooldown assigned to it. I adore the momentum that this could bring to him as stops to reload would become more infrequent.
First Ability(Disposing Evidence)-When activated Benjamin will reach into his trench coat to pull out a strangle clock to chuck it into the air. From there it will begin floating and taunt enemies to move towards it. The clock will explode after 6s. Alternatively, if he shoots it out of the air the bullet will split into 12 other bullets that each do 30% of the original bullets damage that will randomly target nearby enemies. This ability will have a 12s cooldown.
Notes:>! I love the idea of abilities creating objects the player can interact with, and since his passive is all about constantly shooting why not have the main mode of interaction be by shooting it. The explosion would be a better AOE tool while shooting the clock would be better for single target elimination since it would massively increase the damage of just one bullet.!<
Second Ability(Open Doors)-Once activated Benjamin will fold in on himself and collapse into the trench coat's hidden portal so he will teleport a short distance away. He will specifically teleport in the direction he is looking at, but if the ability is held down he will instead teleport a short distance directly behind him. Either way he teleports, doing so will reduce the cooldown on “Hidden Arsenal” by 10s. This ability will have a 20s cooldown.
Notes: This would be his main survivability/mobility tool. It’s simple, flexible, and effective while also having the added utility of reducing the cooldown on “Hidden Arsenal” so that instant reload can proc more consistently. The idea of a sniper constantly changing their position after every shot was part of the inspiration for this ability.
Third Ability(Locked Doors)-Upon activation he will throw out a key straight into the air where it will begin to descend back into the ground. Any enemies within an 8m radius of the key will be unable to move outside of that zone until the key hits the ground and unlocks it, which will occur after 6s of it being tossed into the air. Alternatively, if Benjamin shoots the key out of the sky it will fire off chains that seek out those nearby enemies to bind them together, this binding does not hinder their movement. While they are bound, damage is linked between all targets, so if one target gets headshot that damage will then also be inflicted to all other targets at 40% of the original damage. This ability will have a 25s cooldown
Notes: The first effect, depending on which enemy types find themselves in its zone, can be a life saver or entirely useless as it does not stop them from attacking or using abilities. It’s a simple Root ability but not in its purest form since they still have some space to run in. The second effect was the main effect I wanted to focus on. As it currently works now, if one enemy is hit by 200 damage every other target linked to them will take 80 damage. This will be his main burst AOE tool.
Ultimate(My Friends from the Other Side)-When this is activated Benjamin will release two ghost-like creatures from the portal within his trench coat. These creatures will use copies of his current weapon and deal 60% of his current damage. Additionally if he is aiming down sights they will shoot exactly where he is shooting to set up a firing squad, otherwise if he is hip-firing they will shoot at a different target instead if at all possible. Then if he is sprinting the ghosts will break off from him to collect pick-ups for him like additional ammo. Finally, if Benjamin attempts a melee attack while the ghosts are out he will instead command the ghosts to have one drag an enemy to him while the other shanks them while Benjamin is free to pop their head off afterwards if they survive the shiv. This ability will last for 20s with a 60s cooldown.
Notes: Main idea with this ability is to setup a firing squad that he can command to amplify his damage. Puppet characters in shooters aren't super common and tend to have very limited commands, and while I tried to give more variety in how Benjamin can influence the ghosts I still feel there's something missing.

2023.03.29 02:22 Symeni TECH SUPPORT: PC Black Screen and Auto Restart

Hello! I am sorry if this is not the correct place to post something like this but I am quite desperate. I have a very strange situation and have tried damn near everything to fix it. I built my PC about 3 months ago and have had an issue on and off where the PC screen will go black and automatically restart. When I checked Event Viewer the error is a Critical Kernel 41 Error. All the parts were bought new except for an older NVME SSD that I brought into my new PC from my old system. When it powers off, the fans keep running and everything seems to still be turned on but it crashes anyway. It happens anywhere and everywhere, sometimes while gaming, sometimes while watching YouTube, and it even happened in BIOS one time which means it is likely not a software issue. My temps are stable enough, with the CPU reaching a max of around 75C when gaming and the GPU hitting 65-70C when gaming but it is usually lower than that.
My Specs are:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7700x
GPU: GIGABYTE AERO 4080
MOBO: ASUS ROG STRIX B650
RAM: 2x Corsair CMT32GX5M2B5200C40 5200 2x16
CPU Cooler: Kraken Z73 RGB
PSU: Corsair RMx850 80+ Gold
Drives: WD 770 NVME and WD 750 NVME (this one is from my old system)
Additional: Lian Li SL-Infinity 120x10, Lian Li Strimer v2 24 Pin
When I first built the PC 3 months ago it went about 7 days with no issues. Then, the black screens started. I panicked like I am now and eventually I plugged it into my wall as opposed to a power strip and that seemed to fix the issue for about 2 months. About 2 weeks ago, the black screens started again and me plugging it into the wall did not fix it like it did last time. I can say for sure it is not the graphics card because I had slotted in my old MSI NVIDIA GTX 970 while I was waiting for my 4080 to arrive and the crashes have happened with both cards. I have tried many troubleshooting steps, including taking out the old SSD, updating drivers from ASUS website, doing a fresh install of windows multiple times, and even had it taken to a professional who could not determine the issue. He said my hardware passed but he was not able to directly test the power supply, and he said he was 90% sure that it was because I had to daisy chain one of the PCIe power cables on the 12vhpwr adapter that goes to the 4080. I have done some research on this and most say it isn't an issue. I contacted corsair to get a 3rd PCIe cable but they take forever to respond, and I'm not even sure if this is the issue because as stated earlier these crashes happened with both cards. Any advice anyone can give is appreciated otherwise I will just have to start replacing parts one by one until I find the issue.

2023.03.29 02:20 trader_dennis UBS MDT downgrade

I've posted part of the executive summary from the downgrade document. Pretty harsh, looks like MDT has headwinds in the diabetes space, robotics, and supply chain margins.
I am thinking of cutting and running. It is just over 1% of my portfolio, I am a type 1 diabetic and I do see the community moving from MDT to different companies products in the space. podd pumps, and freestyle libre / dexicom CGMs. Just was a bit curious to hear what others are saying before I hit the sell button.
Will probably put the capital into either long term bonds. The account is tax advantaged, but only for the next 9 years.

From UBS.
Medtronic PLC
Low Expectations Not Low Enough; Assume Sell
Near-Term Sales and EPS Downside Risk as Transformation Takes Time
We are assuming coverage of MDT shares with a Sell rating and a $79 price target. Despite MDT's ongoing transformation, we lack conviction that MDT can return to
sustainable mid-single-digit top-line growth and drive consistent operating margin
upside. MDT's current WAMGR (weighted average market growth rate) is 4%-5%, but
MDT has been losing share in some of its highest growth businesses (i.e. Diabetes), impeding sustained growth at or above its WAMGR. Over the next 4 years, we project a
3.8% sales CAGR vs. consensus at 4.8%. Potential resolution of the outstanding
Diabetes Warning Letter could be a positive catalyst for the stock, but we see MDT at
best stemming recent share loss in Diabetes even with new product launches vs. truly going on the offensive and driving share gains. Below Consensus on NT Sales and LT Key Pipeline Product Opportunities
In FY24 and FY25, we are below consensus EPS by low-single-digits and high-single-
digits, respectively, driven mostly by lower sales. While MDT may gain marginal share in
some businesses, i.e. Evolut FX in TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement), MDT is
losing share in others, i.e. cryo, peripheral , and diabetes, to name a few, which nets to
at best MDT growing in line with its ~4.5% WAMGR. Longer-term, we are more
cautious on 2 key pipeline products: (1) The Hugo surgical robot, which we see driving
$100M in sales in FY2027 vs. consensus at $330M; and (2) The Symplicity renal
denervation (RDN) catheter, where we model minimal sales through FY27 vs. consensus
at $177M given what we think will be reimbursement and market development hurdles. UBS Evidence Lab Surveys Show TAVR Growth, Minimal Diabetes Share Gains
Beyond key new product launches, our UBS Evidence Lab surveys also point to
potentially lackluster growth for MDT in 2 of its highest-growth markets, TAVR and
Diabetes. The TAVR survey indicates just high-single-digit U.S. growth over the next 2
years, below consensus at low double-digits. In Diabetes, the survey projects just ~1.9
points of share gain in 2023, entirely dependent on a 780G launch this year that remains
very much uncertain given the Warning Letter.

2023.03.29 01:32 Throwdatshii I replaced my oil pan!

Thats right. I did that shit. The reason why it was cracked? I leftied when i shouldve rightied the drain plug. That should tell you my level of mechanical expertise.
I found the fucking repair manual pdf. I took the fairings off for the first time (broke the shit out of them thank you JB weld for saving my ass). Bought a replacement hardware set cause i knew i would fuck the fairings up. I figured out how to remove the radiator. I figured out how to remove the exhaust. I took the oil pan off and bought a new (to me) oil pan. I scraped the old RTV off. I bought new RTV and patiently waited for a warm enough day to apply and attach the new pan. I did it. I put the exhaust back on, i reattached the radiator (huge bitch), and reassembled the fairings.
I. Did. That. Shit. My. Self. Ive honestly never felt this proud of anything in a long time. I just wanted to share this with you all because i dont have irl motorcycle friends who might appreciate the learning journey. To all of you out there who are watching revzilla videos figuring out how to change the oil or lube your chain - YOU FUCKING GOT THIS.
Anyways, springs here so hope to see you all out on the road!

Historic agreement will diversify key supply chains and strengthen the U.S.-Japan bilateral economic and trade relationship
WASHINGTON -- United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Japan’s Ambassador to the United States, Tomita Koji, today signed a critical minerals agreement (“Agreement Between the Government of Japan and the Government of the United States of America on Strengthening Critical Minerals Supply Chains”). The Agreement builds on the 2019 U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement and will strengthen and diversify critical minerals supply chains and promote the adoption of electric vehicle battery technologies. In particular, the Agreement memorializes the shared commitment of the United States and Japan with respect to the critical minerals sector to facilitate trade, promote fair competition and market-oriented conditions for trade in critical minerals, advance robust labor and environmental standards, and cooperate in efforts to ensure secure, transparent, sustainable, and equitable critical minerals supply chains.
“Today’s announcement is proof of President Biden’s commitment to building resilient and secure supply chains,” said Ambassador Katherine Tai. “Japan is one of our most valued trading partners and this agreement will enable us to deepen our existing bilateral relationship. This is a welcome moment as the United States continues to work with our allies and partners to strengthen supply chains for critical minerals, including through the Inflation Reduction Act.”
The Agreement establishes several new commitments and areas for joint cooperation regarding electric vehicle battery critical minerals supply chains between the United States and Japan, including those related to:
  • Non-imposition of export duties on critical minerals;
  • Domestic measures to address non-market policies and practices of other countries affecting trade in critical minerals;
  • Best practices regarding review of investments within their territories in the critical minerals sector by foreign entities;
  • Measures that promote more resource efficient and circular economy approaches to reduce the demand for, and environmental impact of, virgin material extraction and related processes;
  • Engagement, information-sharing, and enforcement actions related to labor rights in critical minerals extraction and processing;
  • Remedying violations of labor rights at entities connected to critical minerals supply chains; and
  • Promoting employer neutrality in union organizing and operations.
The Agreement entered into force immediately upon signature.

MARCH 27, 2023~ RESEARCHERS TEST HIGH-CAPACITY TITANIUM-AIR BATTERY By Ariel Grossman,

Researchers Test High-Capacity Titanium-Air Battery (nocamels.com)
A bar of titanium. Courtesy Alchemist-hp (pse-mendelejew.de), CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons
Researchers have, for the first time, tested a titanium-air battery, which could theoretically store up to three times more energy than standard batteries.
That would be a major advantage over the zinc-air combination currently used in hearing aids, sensors and other small devices.
The study was conducted by scientists at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, and at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, a German research institute.
The researchers succeeded in utilizing its potential as a battery by applying a liquid that consists of salt and has a low melting point, also known as an ionic liquid.
Titanium-air batteries may also be used for large-scale stationary storage systems that use low-cost, common, and non-toxic materials. It could be a replacement for lithium, which is a more expensive resource.
Titanium is the ninth most frequently occurring material in the Earth’s crust, and there are plenty of its resources available for battery use.
In metal-air batteries, the contained metal reacts with the oxygen in the air to release electrical energy. Unlike other kinds of batteries, it obtains oxygen from the ambient air via a special electrode and does not have to be kept in the battery.
Therefore, significantly higher energy densities can be realized with these systems than with common battery types, at least in theory.
The study was published in the Chemical Engineering Journal.

2023.03.28 22:50 Beanbag141 PLEASE HELP: my computer suddenly gets VERY loud without a temp spike and after it's been dusted.

I'm sorry if this reads like a fucking crackhead wrote this, but I'm truly at my wit's end.
PROBLEM:
This all started fairly recently, within the last year or so.
When I'm playing games sometimes my computer suddenly gets VERY loud. At first it only happened when I had reshade enabled when playing the sims 4, now it happens even without reshade enabled. The noise also comes at different intervals while playing different games at different houses. For instance, at my father's house I can use reshade just fine and the noise only came once while playing My Time at Sandrock. Whereas in my dorm room at school, the noise comes every few seconds while I'm playing the sims 4 with or without reshade enabled.
*** MORE NOTES / OBSERVATIONS AT THE END ***

SPECS:
- Ryzen 5600x
- 32 GB RAM
- RTX 2070 Super
- AORUS motherboard for SFF computers (I think)
- Forgot the PCU specs.
*** I can look up the exact specs if need be, I'd just have to go through my Amazon history ***

STEPS I'VE TAKEN TO FIX THE PROBLEM (not in chronological order):
- Checked my temps, temps are always normal when this happens.
- Updated my drivers
- Updated my BIOS
- Replaced my CPU
- Dusted the computer
- Downloaded Avast to check for viruses (there were none detected)
- Uninstalled then reinstalled a different version of Reshade
- Uninstalled Reshade in general
- Upgraded to Windows 11

NOTES:
- Maybe it has something to do with voltage? All hardware (power chord, etc.) has remained the same at both my Dad's house and my dorm. The only thing that has changed was the power strip and the monitors used.
- The noise only happens when I'm playing games. Doing stuff on the web doesn't cause the noise to occur. It also doesn't occur when the computer is just idling at the home screen with the game running in the background.
- RECENT DEVELOPMENT: I can play the Sims 4 in certain worlds on certain lots without the noise coming back

Someone please help me I feel like I'm loosing my mind.

2023.03.28 22:30 thunar2112 Legendary and Unique Item Feedback and Discussion

TL;DR: I believe there is a consistency problem among the design of legendaries and uniques. It seems like the team is caught between two philosophies for legendaries, some grant insane damage amps and/or have interesting effects while others only grant effects or alter a skill. I think Legendaries with massive scaling bonuses present a large balance problem, invalidating builds without enough supporting legendaries. I’d like to see most damage bonuses removed from legendaries and baked into the base damage of the skill, let legendaries be for altering how skills work and adding interesting effects. I am not saying legendaries shouldnt increase damage at all, just not turn a skill from useless into godly. Also the datamined Uniques we have available do not feel different enough from legendary effects, many of them are seemingly identical. I’d like to see uniques that are skill agnostic and allow the player to come up with a build for them.
Hi everyone, I’d like to provide some feedback and hopefully start a discussion surrounding Legendaries and Uniques. First off, I enjoyed my time in the beta quite a bit and am excited for the full release. I was not in closed beta, so this perspective is coming from open betas plus reading about datamined information found here https://lothrik.github.io/diablo4-build-calc/
Second, I am mostly comparing the Sorc and Druid legendaries as I played those two classes the most but from reading through other classes legendaries this can seemingly be applied to all classes.
Lastly, we unfortunately don’t have the beta in front of us anymore, so I’m not looking to get caught up in the nitty gritty of exact numbers since I don’t have them. Also this is focused only on legendaries and uniques (datamined), overall itemization is a completely different topic, and one maybe for a different post.
Anyway with that out of the way onto the main feedback.

· Legendaries have no consistency in power level.

Now this is sort of a balance issue but also a fundamental one with how it can severely inhibit build diversity. Lets look at two skills with wildly different reception, pulverize and chain lightning.
Most people say, wow look at chain lightning its so OP and man pulverize sucks, it hits like a wet noodle except once every 10 seconds. Except the few people that found the pulverize shockwave legendary, which reads ‘Pulverize creates a shockwave that travels forward dealing X% damage in its path’. Sounds like a great legendary, but the fundamental flaw is that that X% is something like 200-250%.
Now if we compare it to a chain lightning legendary, Chain Lightning has a % chance to chain to additional enemies. No extra damage scaling, just extra bounces. Now yes, I know extra bounces = more damage but its not a 250% multiplier and that’s why chain lightning feels good to use. It’s balanced around not being scaled by 250%, so why is pulverize?
I’m not going through every legendary but if you read through them, overall sorc and druid are complete opposites in how legendaries are handled. Most sorc legendaries add additional effects, not damage. Most druid legendaries add effects and a shitton of damage. This also presents a scaling problem and a build diversity problem, as druid will likely outscale sorc if sorc does not also get legendaries with these huge bonuses, but also, if every druid skill does not have legendaries with massive bonuses, only the ones that do have it will be used.
Personally, I’d like to see more sorc-like legendaries that alter skills or give additional effects and NOT ones that amp damage. Take the Pulverize legendary and make it only add the awesome screen clearing shockwave effect, and redistribute some or all of the damage into base damage of the skill. Same goes for the companion one, why are wolves useless until I get a legendary that increases their damage by 150% and makes them werewolves and they spread rabies? Increase base wolf damage instead and make the legendary centered around them being werewolves and casting your rabies skill for you (that’s another topic as this legendary currently only spreads it which is useless because it spreads fast enough but anyway).
There absolutely are already a ton of great legendary effects ideas in the game that will alter how you build your character. Things like making claw a storm skill and casting storm strike and pulverize an earth skill and casting earth spikes. Effects that add different tags so they scale off other parts of your tree is awesome and hopefully there are many more powers out there like that.
To sum up this point, it seems like we have two competing design philosophies between legendaries that alter skills and ones that increase skill damage exponentially. This presents a balance problem and is probably what lead to some classes feeling weak, as more of their power is on legendaries. I feel like this needs to be consistent across all classes and legendaries. Personally, I would prefer they go the route of having higher base damage and legendaries that add effects, like multiple projectiles, or giant shockwaves, but the skill is useful on its own.

· What makes legendaries and uniques different besides only being able to use one unique?

Looking at the datamined effects, there’s also no consistency between what is a unique and what is a legendary. Looking at two sorc examples we have ‘Fireball splits into 2 additional projectiles every third cast’ and ‘Charged Bolts now pierce enemies and do x% less damage.’ These are build changing uniques? They look like they could be legendary effects, honestly they should be legendary effects, because they fit the idea of altering a skill perfect.
I think uniques should not be designed around skills but general effects that alter how you play or build your character, since it is unique after all. A good sorc example is, Your Critical Strike is Increased by a % of your movement speed. This is a great idea for a unique, it is not telling you how to play your character or what skill to use, it just alters how your character scales off a stat. Now I can look for movespeed synergies from my skills, gear, and in my tree etc. Its up to ME to figure how to make that work if I’m interested in using this unique, not a dev saying, hey this unique is for your fireball build, to me that’s what legendaries are for, they are the rune replacement of d3.
Overall, I think there needs to be clear distinction between uniques and legendaries. I feel like I should be able to read an effect description and fairly accurately be able to guess if it were a legendary or unique. As of right now, there does not seem to be any difference.
Honestly I could probably go all day listing the examples of the legendaries and uniques in the game that are good and bad, but I’m going to stop here. What does everything think of legendaries and uniques so far and the points brought up here?

2023.03.28 22:10 Jeffyplox P0715 input/output speed sensor circuit ”A” issue on 08 GTS

I have an ongoing issue that started with a 08 Mitsubishi lancer GTS crankshaft pulley replacement. I did everything correctly then afterwards realized the car was in “limp mode” thought it could have been a timing issue I replaced the timing chain and the car idles fine the transmission shifts and pulls but is stuck in limp mode. Replaced the speed sensors after I finally got a code to post and I’m still having issues. What could this be? It seems like it might be an electrical issue now

2023.03.28 21:07 angrypnutbutter23 My Midi/Pad-Mapping for DDJ-1000 (Manual adjust loops w/o "Shift")

MIDI
  1. For the longest since receiving my controller I was never of a fan of hitting "Shift + In/Out" to manually tighten loops. As a person who was coming off the DDJ-400, this felt wrong to me. Truly felt that at times where I could attempt this on a track I wouldn't even bother on my 1000. Having to hit "Shift" would make me lose those seconds I needed and it was a pain. I mapped the "Manual-Tightening" function to my "Track-Search Fwd/Bwd" & "Search Fwd/Bwd" button. This removed the button's function entirely, which I rarely ever used. Most times I hit the button it was on accident. You're still able to use the dedicated "In/Out" buttons as well, even simultaneously. Also you're still able to skip thru mem cues using "Shift + Search Fwd/Bwd".
  2. Tempo-Reset, for what I know is a very new feature from Pioneer. I could be mistaken but I didn't know it existed until seeing the FLX-10 drop. I thought that's very handy to have and found it a bit annoying to manually reset desired track's BPM by going up/down on the tempo-slider. I never used the "Slip-Reverse" button & already had that feature on a pad-fx which I noticed has 0 input lag, whereas the dedicated button does. Went ahead and removed the function and replaced it for "Tempo-Reset". Now when you click "Slip-Reverse", it stays lit letting you know the feature has been activated or is active.
PADS
  1. Of course since the release of STEMS that needed to be a function so I replaced it with my "Sampler" section. Instead of assigning the pads on top (1-3) I opted for placing them below on pads (5-8). Reason being was that I noticed I would confuse the "STEM-Section/Sampler" with being "Hot-Cues" or vice-versa. Now I easily know what's what when I see "BGR" (colors) on the bottom pads. That's not for everybody but it definitely helped me to differentiate the modes much easier. As well as having the STEMS on pads (5-8) I thought it would be immensely helpful to assign a "Echo 1/2 (Release on)" on Pad #4 up-top away from the STEM pads.
  2. On "Sampler" if you hit the arrow key once you will get to the other section of pads (9-12) TOP & (13-16) BOTTOM. On pads (9-10) I mapped it for an additional way of "calling" between mem cues. I may change this later to have back the ability of "Search Fwd/Bwd" but I never used that function. Also that's what beat jump is for. Since I also removed the function of "Track-Search Fwd/Bwd" I placed them on pads (15 & 16). Now if & when needed to, I can load up different songs without touching my laptop.
  3. Beat-Jump straight out the box was made terribly for the 1000. Again coming off the DDJ-400 I figured it would be implemented the same like manually tightening loops. I made my pads (1-2) skip 4 beats, (3-4) skip 8 beats, (5-6) skip 16 beats, (7-8) skip 32 beats. Yes, I know that the arrow keys will increase the beat intervals but its very broken in my opinion. I hated using shift so I made use of the arrow keys to make it my "beat-loop" mode. I made pads (9-16) on Beat-Jump follow this order 1/16, 1/8/ 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 8, 16 beats. I didn't put a "4-beat loop" pad since there is already a dedicated button for it.
These are all the changes I made to my 1000 & I'm satisfied with a layout that makes sense to me. If you have anymore suggestions to make on Midi/Pads please let me know. I want to find out what other people are adding/removing to their controller & as to how I can get better use out of mine as well. Now I can finally James-Hype style loops all day in my room!!! (jk aha!!).
