In this recent interview with game development magazine App2Top.com, Cascadeur creator Eugen Dyabin tells about his further plans, the challenges that Nekki's animation tool is currently facing, and, most importantly, its integration with neural networks. We publish a part of the original interview in our blog.
Alexander Semenov, Editor-in-Chief of App2Top - Eugene, hello! Look, since December, I wanted to talk to the Cascadeur team on the topic of graphical neural networks. By the way, how do you feel about them in general?
Eugen Dyabin
Eugene Dyabin, founder and chief producer of Cascadeur - We treat them with great interest and even use them in our own development. Speaking globally, I do not share the panic about the sudden technological revolution with the disappearance of many professions. The advent of cameras has not reduced the number of artists, and the advent of cameras with auto-tuning in each phone has not reduced the number of professional photographers and operators, although it has changed their work.In addition, these new neural networks have many problems and limitations. If you try to put them into practice, it greatly cools the first impression. Let's see how fast the progress will be.
In December, Cascadeur had an official worldwide release after a year of beta. What challenges did you face as a service after that?
Eugene - The release led to a large influx of users, which significantly increased the load on our support team. There were a lot of questions, but the number of Pro subscribers remained the same for now, and it's not so easy to scale them - they need to be well-versed in the program and technical details.
That's why we're working on a comprehensive FAQ to speed up support overall - but also to prioritize support for Pro users: in the future, when they buy a license, they will immediately receive a link to a closed channel with direct contact to the development team. In general, we are optimizing the support process right now.
It was also the first time we encountered the fact that some companies need to buy 40 licenses at once, for example. So we needed to finish this feature urgently. Also, it turned out that 20% of our users are students or employees in education, so now we also need to speed up the process of issuing educational licenses.
You're probably collecting feedback. Based on it, what are users usually missing in Cascadeur today?
Eugene - Users are missing thousands of little things, and it's impossible to do everything at once. So we have to prioritize those features that we think are most requested or most important. There are regular but complex requests like facial animations or blendshapes that need to be done sooner or later, but so far, we just don't have enough human resources.
As for our main theme - physics - many users expect ragdoll, collisions and interaction with the environment. Our AI AutoPhysics specializes in correcting dynamic balance in movements, correcting trajectory and rotation in jumps, and adding secondary movement - an by that greatly improves the quality of animation and speeds up work on it. So far, though, there isn't the possiblity to push off walls, climb ledges, or interact with other characters. But we are actively working on that as well.
Some users have complained about the awkwardness of using the character's fingers, because you have to rotate each finger limb individually. But with the 2023.1 updates, we'll be adding automatic finger positioning - a smart rig that makes it very easy to control fingers with multiple controllers.

When I saw what the Stable Diffusion - ControlNet - Blender bundle was capable of, I immediately thought of Cascadeur. Unlike Blender, it is focused on posing, and I am sure that its entry threshold is less than that of Blender (and it is definitely more convenient than the basic functionality of ControlNet). In this regard, the question is: is it worth waiting for SD support in Cascadeur?
Eugene - We immediately thought of it too! And not only we. However, only we have the most convenient tool for controlling the pose of the figure, suitable for beginners and amateurs. We just need to add a neural rendering based on Stable Diffusion, which will turn a 3D model into a finished 2D image in any style. We're already working on that.
We've always wanted to reach a wider audience, but the problem with Cascadeur is that it doesn't provide a finished end product; it's just a link in the production chain. But Neurorendering can remove that barrier for a broad audience, especially in the mobile version of Cascadeur. You download the mobile app, set a relatively natural pose with AutoPosing, choose the camera angle, upload an image of a character, and get that character in the pose you want from the angle you want. This gives much more creative control over the outcome than is possible with a text description. So far we're only talking about images, but one day we'll get to videos, and that's when Cascadeur's advantages will be in full effect.
The first neural networks capable of making videos are already appearing. In two or three years and, most likely, we will see the first full-fledged short films. But, will they be built on the principle of text-to-animation or on the principle of text+animation-to-animation, where an animated mockup will also act as a promt?
Eugene - So far, I am skeptical that in the near future neural networks will be able to generate high-quality 3d animation without relying on physical simulations. We consider text-to-animation as a primary draft that we can clean, correct poses and physics – and get high-quality animation that the user can edit using our tools. I can't imagine how, without additional control, you can get the necessary result from the text alone, except in the most trivial cases.
If you add video neuro rendering to this, which will become possible sooner or later, then the tool turns out to be quite magical. You describe the idea in your own words, get a realistic enough version, edit it and at the output, you have a ready-made video with the right character in any style. But so far, this is all a concept, and implementation is still far away.

Cascadeur itself was built on the basis of neural networks.In other words, you have been in this topic for a long time. However, have you used them only as part of training your service? Or have you experimented with it somewhere (in other areas)?
Eugene - First of all, I want to note that so far, there are more physics in Cascadeur than neural networks, and this is the main difference from most of the solutions we know for generating animation. We started using neural networks a few years ago and achieved the greatest success in the AutoPosing tool, which helps to make a natural pose with the least amount of user actions.
If we talk about our company Nekki as a whole, neural networks have been used in other projects for different tasks. As an example, I can name the bots in Shadow Fight 4: Arena. They have been trained with real player battle recordings and are able to control different characters using their special techniques and tactics characteristic of these characters.
Many animations in Cascadeur are done like this: a video clip is loaded into the program as a template, according to which the animator reproduces key frames. How realistic is it within the framework of your service to implement a model that will be ready to make a draft animation based on video alone? Are you working in this direction?
Eugene - Yes, we are working on it - it's something like a video mocap. Already in the version 2023.1 of Cascadeur there will be the first alpha version of this feature. It is not yet possible to achieve perfect quality, but as a reference animation draft, in which there are at least key poses and timings, this can save a lot of time. We will further develop and optimize this feature. It works slowly on the client computer, so in the long run, we need to transfer it to the server – then we will be less limited by the user's hardware performance.
Back to business: now people are saying that investors want to invest like crazy in AI. Have you had that experience? What are these investors waiting for? And do they understand that they are essentially competing with Microsoft, Google and Adobe in this space?
Eugene - I think there is no competition here with such giants. Large companies invest in the technology itself, and small companies and startups try to use this technology in different areas. Even we don't develop our neural rendering or video mockup from scratch but use available libraries and models that we configure and retrain for our tasks. I have the impression that investment in such projects will now increase sharply. Cascadeur's development is fully funded by Nekki, but we are also open to proposals.
By the way, did you expect such attention to neural networks that they received after the popularization of MJ, SD and ChatGPT?
Eugene- A few years ago, we already understood that the future lies in neural networks and their implementation in various tools, so we began to recruit data scientists and engage in research and development of our tools in order to be ready for the coming revolution. But the successes of Midjourney and ChatGPT still surprised us and gave us new hopes and ideas like neural rendering, text-to-animation and others.

Are you ready to make a prediction? What can be expected in the context of AI technologies, including your own, at least until the end of the year
Eugene - I think that the world and the market will not change as quickly as many people fear, but most importantly, investments will change, which reflects the belief in a certain future... In the coming year, I expect to see the emergence of intelligent search and a change in the approach to tutorials - soon, people will be able to receive personalized help and instructions for their tasks. Generative networks will help to prototype and try different ideas faster, but in most cases, they will not be able to produce the final result.
As far as we're concerned, we think of AI as an assistant that speeds up the work of an animator who knows what he wants. Motion detection based on reference, autoposing, autophysics, neurorendering - all of these are primarily designed to shorten the time between the idea and the result, but at every stage, the animator has full control and can make any changes. I think that by the end of the year, we will already be able to introduce new AI features.
And two technical questions: when I familiarized myself with the limitations of the free version, I found that the user can only export models with "300 images and 120 joints". For those who are not familiar with the animation, explain how much is it?
Eugene - The idea behind the restrictions is to allow amateurs and indie developers to use Cascadeur for free without sacrificing important features.300 frames at 30 frames per second is 10 seconds. That's more than enough for game animations, but not enough for long cutscenes. Also, 120 points is enough for almost any character, but not enough for multiple characters or for very fancy characters. .
When can we expect Godot support?

Lithuania had the most Soviet partisans out of all 3 Baltic states, with an estimated 7- 10,000 operating in Lithuania during the Nazi occupation. (From Wikipedia.) About 5,000 people, many being Lithuanian citizens, gave their lives defending Lithuania during the early moments of the German invasion (from Wikipedia.) Most of the following info is from an interview with Lithuanian Soviet veteran Julius Deksnys from the Russian language newspaper Obzhor, translated. -The 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division is often considered the most diverse division of the USSR. In it, ethnic Lithuanians, Lithuanian Jews, Russians, Poles, and other ethnicities in Lithuania were represented. There was also the 29th Lithuanian Rifle Corps, which unlike the 16th Division, the 29th was filled with deserters who fled to the enemy. However, most of the soldiers of the 29th Corps who chose to stay with the USSR who didn’t desert were eventually sent to the much larger 16th Division. Among those who stayed with Soviet forces was heroic Lithuanian Soviet lieutenant general Vincas Vitkauskas, the only Lithuanian to receive such rank. The 16th Rifle Division did not generally have a desertion problem, and most of its members were committed to defeating both the German and Baltic fascist enemies. (From Wikipedia.) -in Vilnius in 1944 sometime before liberation, 1,417 soldiers were recruited to the Red Army. Of the Lithuanian citizens recruited to the Red Army from the city that year, 898 were from the Polish minority of Lithuania, some of whom served in the Polish Armed Forces of the USSR. 5,000 Lithuanians participated in the East Prussian offensive. 8,000 Lithuanians participated in the Soviet liberation of Berlin. The 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division is well known for its defending of the Russian city of Oryol, where a memorial exists, as well as its amazing feats in the Battle of Kursk, the Klaipeda and Siauliai offensives, and the battles against Latvian SS in the Courland Pocket in neighboring Latvia. Of the 16th Lithuanian Division, 9,255 soldiers of all ethnicities died in battle. When measured strictly for ethnic Lithuanian casualties, the number is 5,040. In all units of the Red Army total, 40,000 Lithuanians went missing, never to return home. 80,000 were confirmed dead. 253 memorial monuments were built to the veterans of Lithuania throughout Lithuania, many of which unfortunately are decreasing in number due to the right wing government as well as ultranationalist sentiments of much of the ethnic Lithuanian population, whom have replaced many Soviet veterans monuments with ones to fascist collaborators. Regardless of troubling circumstances in present day Lithuania, some Soviet veterans, among them ethnic Lithuanian veteran Julius Deksnys, who leads a support group for Soviet veterans. Not mentioned in the following article, Deksnys has been fighting fascism since the very beginning of the war in the Baltic states. He willingly enlisted in the Red Army to avenge the death of his father after his father was killed by Lithuanian nationalists for being a communist. Towards the end of the war, when Deksnys was captured on the battlefield, nationalist Nazi collaborators took Deksnys prisoner and he was sent to a Nazi labor camp, where he survived to Soviet liberation. He had much to say about the mistreatment of Soviet veterans in modern Lithuania in an interview a few years ago, which I will post much of his lengthy statement below, where I have fixed certain translations typing errors: “After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the restoration of the statehood of the Republic of Lithuania, veterans of the Great Patriotic War had to solve the problems that arose with the change in the socio-economic, political and ideological system of the country. The most offensive for veterans was the statements of politicians, then enshrined in law, that Lithuania did not participate in World War II, and on May 9, 1945, the day of the Great Victory over fascism, seemed to be the day of the second occupation of our country. Attempts by some Lithuanian politicians and historians to rewrite the history of World War II, distort it, to show the period of fascist occupation of 1941-1944 as a noble mission of Nazi Germany to liberate Lithuania from Bolshevism, to justify the crimes of accomplices of the occupiers against humanity are a monstrous lie. In fact, during the Second World War, the issue of the life and death of the entire Lithuanian people was resolved in the most brutal way. After all, according to the plans of the Nazi leaders, Lithuania should have disappeared in the future like a drop of water on a hot stone. We are urged not to forget the lessons of the war to remember the huge human losses during the years of fascist occupation, including the victims of the Holocaust, the soldiers of the Red Army and Soviet partisans who died for the liberation of Lithuania. The Soviet-era veteran organization and its Republican Committee of Veterans ceased to exist in 1990. Many participants of the Great Patriotic War, citizens of a once great and powerful country, faced the need to decide on citizenship in the newly created independent states of the former Soviet Union. This is how citizens of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and other countries appeared in Lithuania. But they were all united by one thing - the fighting past, the fighting brotherhood and the memory of the Victory over fascism. the combat history of the Lithuanian national unit, the combat service of the intelligence officer of the 18th separate reconnaissance company Paulius Širvys, later an outstanding poet of Lithuania, who was often compared to Sergei Yesenin, is especially noted. But few people know what a brave intelligence officer he was. P. Širvys distinguished himself in many battles and was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree and two medals “For Courage”. His romantic poems and poems dedicated to the soldier are read and recited by both young and old. Composers compose music based on his words, organize concerts. From 1946 to 1948, military memorials were created in cities and districts, in settlements where major battles took place, where the remains of Soviet soldiers were transferred from solitary graves and mass graves. In total, there are currently 253 military memorials and graves in Lithuania, many have monuments, there are memorial plates with the names of the fallen soldiers. Since 2000, with the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Lithuania, repair and restoration work has been carried out on military graves. But recently, extremely negative trends in the fight against monuments of the Soviet past have been increasingly manifested in Lithuania. Monuments of special artistic and historical value created by Lithuanian classic sculptors are being demolished. I mean sculptural compositions on the Green Bridge in Vilnius, as well as monuments to Hero of Soviet Union Marytė Melnikaitė in Zarasai and twice Hero of Soviet Union pilot Yakov Smushkevich in Rokiskis. The most important attributes of the life of veterans, the object of their well-deserved pride are combat awards for feats on the battlefields. Orders and medals have Soviet symbols: red star, sickle and hammer, the image of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Joseph V. Stalin. For this reason, wearing them in everyday life is prohibited at the legislative level. This is not only a moral insult to veterans, but also a direct violation of human rights. Such laws have contributed to the activation of ultranationalist sentiments and neo-Nazi manifestations. Cases of vandalism actually encouraged by the authorities at the graves of Soviet soldiers, the demolition of Soviet symbols from monuments have become more frequent, even though they are included in the register of cultural heritage. What will remain of this kind of intervention? Naked memorial steles and plates... The most interesting thing is that the main argument for such actions is the statement that Soviet symbols offend the feelings of a large social group of people affected by Soviet power. But it is permissible to ask: are veterans who did not spare their lives, health in the fight against the Nazis deprived of feelings and the right to memory of their dead comrades? At the origins of our veteran organization were front-line soldiers Juozas Adamonis, Algimantas Stankevičius, Petras Eidukas. With Algimantas Stankevicius, I happened to serve in the first platoon of the first company of the first battalion of the 156th Rifle Regiment of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division. On January 27, 1945, we walked together in a chain of attacking warriors, freeing Klaipeda from the Nazi invaders. Stapas Shimonis, becoming chairman of the organization in 1993, did a lot to unite its members, her admission to the World Federation of War Veterans. At the General Assembly of the Federation in Seoul, he was elected a member of the executive committee. After him, since 1999, the organization was headed by Petras Eidukas, who was awarded the title of Honorary Chairman in 2015. Unfortunately, he passed away this year. Despite his 92 years, Nikolai Mikhailovich Riskov, chairman of the veteran organization of the Šalcinunkai district, works actively. On his initiative, a museum of participants of the Great Patriotic War was opened in the district center of Šalcininkai. This is the first museum of its kind in Lithuania, which was opened on July 16, 2014, to the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Šalcininkai and Vilnius. The museum contains a collection of photos of front-line soldiers and Soviet partisans who participated in the liberation of the district or lived after the war, as well as various copies of documents of the war years, military memoirs, books about the war. Relatives bring combat awards, various documents of deceased veterans to the museum. Schoolchildren come to the museum, solemn events dedicated to Victory Day, the Day of Liberation of the district are held here. During the celebrations dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Victory Day, N. Riskov decided to post photos of deceased veterans, residents of the Šalcininkai district, at the city grave of Soviet soldiers, next to the graves of the deceased liberators of the district. This action attracted residents and was continued. People began to bring photos of deceased relatives. This is how the idea of the “Immortal Regiment” was born in Lithuania. Today it is bitter to admit that Lithuania has enough of those who are trying to forget the lessons of the Nuremberg Tribunal, which condemned not only fascism in all its manifestations, but also Nazi accomplices. The names of the latter are now called streets and squares, they are honored as national heroes. And war veterans, the winners defeating fascism, have become outcasts of society, the authorities do not pay any attention to them, even in the days of the celebration of the end of the war in Europe, there is not a single kind word for them, let alone gratitude. Nationalist youth call our awards trifs, we are forbidden to wear our combat awards only on the grounds that the orders and medals depict Soviet symbols.” -Julius Deksnys, from an interview with Obzhor newspaper issue # 1041, Dec. 24,2016. 2019 Infiniti QX30

Infiniti vehicles are abundant on the lists of worst vehicles. For some reason, their newer releases fail to meet our expectations. Their QX30 leaves a lot to be desired – it’s not as good as its cheaper competitors. Plus, it doesn’t offer anything new – you’d probably get the same deal if you went for an older model.

2019 Nissan Sentra

2019 Nissan Sentra is quite overpriced, to say the least. It doesn’t have anything exciting to force us to forget about its poor performance. Driving it is a dreadful experience since the interior is quite cheap both in terms of looks and feel.

2019 Infiniti Q70

2019 Infiniti Q70 isn’t any better. Even though it’s priced and marketed as a luxury vehicle, it fails to deliver the performance and comfort we expect from a higher range. You can get far better models for less money.

2019 Mitsubishi Mirage

2019 Mitsubishi Mirage scores quite poorly on reliability scores. It’s quite affordable and fuel-efficient, yet it won’t last you long enough to appreciate those features. It doesn’t have any improvements from previous models either.
What is the worst brand of car to buy new? – I’d say Infiniti. Their newer models are a waste of money. Japanese manufacturers have a lot to offer and that’s exactly why we judge these vehicles so strictly. The bar is too high to turn a blind eye on such poor releases.
