With a simple, yet energetic count-in, The Beatles were on their way to leaving an indelible mark on popular culture, and it all started here. Released 60 years ago today, Please Please Me marked the first album in The Beatles’ discography. A brisk, lively pop-rock confection lasting just over half-an-hour, over a half century later it remains a stunning document of the unbridled joy of the early Beatles.

Background

The Beatles got their start as a skiffle band in the late 1950s in Liverpool. By 1961, after many personnel changes, their lineup consisted of John Lennon on rhythm guitar, Paul McCartney on bass, George Harrison on lead guitar and Pete Best on drums. The group had cut their teeth playing grueling sets in Hamburg nightclubs, often times playing over 8 hours a day and taking uppers to get through the shows. Their repertoire largely consisted of cover songs, though a fledgling songwriting partnership between Lennon and McCartney contributed a few numbers here and there to the proceedings. In the fall of 1961, a rock and roll cover of “My Bonnie” with the Beatles playing backup to Tony Sheridan was released in Germany. Shortly thereafter, the Beatles met Brian Epstein, who would become their manager. He cleaned up their image and sought out a recording contract for them. A New Years Day 1962 audition for Decca Records would prove fruitless (Decca executives felt that "guitar groups are on the way out" and that "the Beatles have no future in show business"). Undeterred, Brian continued searching, eventually inking the band a deal with EMI Records in May.

The Lead-up to Please Please Me

EMI placed the group on Parlophone Records, which was run by George Martin at the time. Martin was impressed by the group’s charisma and personalities, but was doubtful of their ability to write hit songs. An initial recording session on June 6th, 1962 proved futile. Martin was especially unimpressed with the drumming ability of Pete Best. Insistent on the use of a session drummer, The Beatles used this as an opportunity to drop Best in favor of fellow Liverpudlian Ringo Starr. The next session on September 4th 1962, proved much more successful. With Ringo on the drums, the first version of “Love Me Do” was recorded (this was the version used on the 45). A week later, the band re-recorded “Love Me Do” (this was the album version) with session drummer Andy White, as well as “P.S. I Love You”, which served as the B-side to the “Love Me Do” 45.
Despite Martin’s skepticism, “Love Me Do” was a hit, peaking at #17 on the British charts by November of 1962. Convinced of the Beatles’ hitmaking ability, Martin met with the group and proposed the recording of a full album. This was an alien concept to The Beatles, since the LP market was largely driven by adults rather than teens at the time. On November 26th, The Beatles finished up the songs “Please Please Me” and “Ask Me Why” to serve as another single. Upon release on January 11th, 1963, “Please Please Me” became the Beatles’ first #1 hit on the NME and Melody Maker charts (Retroactively, the Record Retailer chart became the basis of the UK Singles Chart. Here, the song peaked at #2).
Originally, Martin wanted to record a live album of The Beatles at their resident venue, the Cavern Club. However, Martin quickly realized the acoustics of the club were insufficient for the recording of an LP. Instead, Martin came up with the idea of recording 10 additional songs to complement the 4 songs already released. Upon asking for potential album names, Paul McCartney suggested Off the Beatle Track.

The Recording of the Album

February 11th, 1963 was to be what was later referred to as “the 585 most productive minutes in the history of recorded music”. Essentially, Martin wanted the album to reflect the group’s stage show. During a gap of their first national tour, the Beatles arrived that morning with John Lennon suffering from a bad cold and attempting to rectify it with a large amount of cough drops (been there, done that).
For the morning recording session, the group started off with recording “There’s a Place” and “Seventeen” (this would later become “I Saw Her Standing There”). Rehearsing through lunch, the afternoon session produced “A Taste of Honey”, “Do You Want to Know a Secret”, and “Misery”. The evening session was produced covers of “Anna (Go to Him), “Boys”, “Chains” and “Baby It’s You”. An early version of “Hold Me Tight” was also recorded during this session, but it was not used and the song was later rerecorded for The Beatles’ sophomore album, With the Beatles.
At 10 PM, shortly before the studios were set to close for the day, the group launched into a cover of “Twist and Shout”. This was saved for last as Martin feared the song would’ve destroyed Lennon’s voice for the day. The song was nailed in one take, which prompted Martin to say, “We've been recording all day but the longer we go on the better they get." The Beatles attended a full tape playback of the album that night, and left happy with the results.
A week later, on February 20th, George Martin overdubbed piano on “Misery” and celesta on “Baby It’s You”. The Beatles were not present. Settling on the name Please Please Me (Off the Beatle Track was later used for Martin’s orchestral album of Beatles songs), the cover art was taken of the group looking down over the stairwell inside EMI’s London headquarters. This shot was later recreated in 1969 for the Get Back album, but not used when it eventually was as Let it Be in 1970. The 1969 photograph was later used for the Beatles’ “Blue Album”.

The Songs

Kicking things off with a bang is “I Saw Her Standing There”. Paul’s count-in was actually taken from Take 9 and spliced onto Take 1 of the song itself. George Martin left the count-in to simulate the effect of a live album. This song was written primarily by Paul, with John contributing a few lyrics, most notably “Well you know, what I mean.” It should be noted that on Please Please Me, the songwriting credits read McCartney-Lennon rather than the more familiar Lennon-McCartney
Next up, is “Misery”. Foreshadowing some of the Beatles’ later work, “Misery” is a portrait of self-pity. The song was actually originally composed with Helen Shapiro in mind (with whom The Beatles performed with on a national UK tour). When it was deemed unsuitable for Shapiro, Kenny Lynch, who was on the same tour, released the song as a single, making this the first Beatles song covered by another artist. Lennon later claimed he had a bit more input on this tune, was McCartney claimed it was a 50-50 collaboration.
We then make our way to the first cover song on the album Arthur Alexander’s “Anna (Go to Him)”. A personal favorite of John Lennon, his cold-stricken vocals add a tinge of pain to this song, making it a personal highlight for me. The Arthur Alexander original would later play a role in the Season 5 episode of Married… with Children, “Oldies But Young 'Uns”.
The next cover song is “Chains”. Written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, this song was originally recorded by girl group The Cookies, and immediately became a popular cover song among bands in Liverpool. The Beatles version features George Harrison on lead vocals, the first time many a Beatles fan heard Harrison singing lead on a commercially released song.
The final cover song on Side One of the LP is “Boys”. Originally released by The Shirelles, “Boys” had long been known as The Beatles’ “drummer song”, with Pete Best covering it on stage prior to Ringo entering the band. Ringo also performed the song as a member of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes prior to joining The Beatles. Despite some pronoun changes from the Shirlles’ original, the song retains a large amount of homoerotic undertones.
“Ask Me Why”, primarily written by Lennon in the style of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, is up next. Close listening can reveal the deteriorating state of Lennon’s voice during the marathon session. “Ask Me Why” was also included as the B-side to “Please Please Me”.
Rounding out the first side of the LP is “Please Please Me”. Originally conceived by John Lennon as a slow bluesy song in the style of Roy Orbison, it took much convincing and rerecording for Martin to release the song as a single. Martin originally felt the song was “dreary” and too slow. Martin wanted to release “How Do You Do It?” as a single for The Beatles. However, the group stood their ground as they only wanted to release original material as singles. “How Do You Do It?” later became a number one hit for Gerry & The Pacemakers. The arrangement for “Please Please Me” was radically altered into the version we know today, and 18 takes of it were recorded before George Martin released the song as a single to major success.
Opening up Side Two of the album is “Love Me Do”. McCartney wrote the bulk of the song, with Lennon writing the bridge. The version on the album was the take with session drummer Andy White playing drums and Ringo on tambourine. The original single version with Ringo on drums was later reissued on Past Masters in 1988. “Love Me Do” was released as a single in the US in 1964 and became a #1 hit.
“P.S. I Love You”, a McCartney composition, was actually produced by Ron Richards in George Martin’s absence (though Martin retained production credit). Like the aforementioned “Love Me Do”, this song features Ringo on maracas with Andy White on drums. Richards was insistent that “P.S. I Love You” had to be the B-side, due to it sharing a name with a 1934 song co-written by Johnny Mercer (who later wrote the lyrics to “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses”).
“Baby It’s You”, another Shirelles cover (with music by the legendary Burt Bacharach), follows. This one features Lennon on lead vocals. The song had been part of the Beatles stage act since 1961, their version differing from the Shirelles’ by repeating the second verse rather than the first. Interestingly enough, a 1969 cover of the song by the band Smith became the highest charting version of the song in the United States (Smith’s version peaked at #5, compared to the Shirelles’ version peaking at #8).
“Do You Want to Know a Secret”, an original song with Harrison on lead vocals is next. Lennon claimed the song as entirely his own, while McCartney later claimed it was a 50-50 collaboration explicitly for George to sing. Lennon was inspired by “I’m Wishing” from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which his mother Julia sang for him as a child. The song was released as a single in the United States in 1964, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and becoming the highest charting Beatles song with a Harrison vocal until “Something” topped the charts in 1969.
McCartney’s cover of the pop standard “A Taste of Honey” follows. This song was originally an instrumental track written for the 1960 Broadway version of the 1958 British play A Taste of Honey (which was later adapted to film in 1961). The first vocal version of the song appeared in 1961 by Billy Dee Williams (Yes, Lando from Star Wars. He appeared in the original Broadway production of the play). Lenny Welch’s 1962 rendition of the song proved to be a big hit, as well as the basis of the Beatles’ version. Lennon allegedly hated the song, going as far to sing “A Waste of Money” for the backing vocals in concert.
The final original song on the album is “There’s a Place”. While Lennon claimed to write the song himself in the Motown style, McCartney claimed the song to be a collaborative effort. He noted the song’s title phrase originated from “Somewhere” from the soundtrack album to West Side Story, as he owned a copy of the album. Regardless, the song has been praised for its introspective lyrics and depth not commonly found in contemporaneous pop songs.
The grand finale, and arguably the most famous of all the Beatles’ covers, is their raucous, electric take on the Isley Brothers’ rendition of “Twist and Shout”. As previously mentioned, Lennon used every last bit of his voice that day shredding through the song. He initially felt ashamed of the performance, feeling his performance was subpar. The song was released as a single in the United States in 1964, peaking at #2 behind the band’s own “Can’t Buy Me Love”. It was the only million selling Beatles single to be a cover song, and was famously used in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in 1986.

Release and Impact

The album was released on March 22, 1963. The album had reached the top of the UK charts by May of 1963 and remained there for 30 weeks until being replaced by the group’s second album, With the Beatles. Please Please Me was also the first non-soundtrack album to spend more than a year consecutively within the top 10 of the UK album charts (with 62 consecutive weeks in the Top 10). This was also a record for a debut album until April 2013 when Emeli Sande’s Our Version of Events achieved a 63rd consecutive week in the Top Ten. Please Please Me’s success was unprecedented for a pop album, as the UK charts at the time largely consisted of film soundtracks and easily listening albums. The success of the album has been attributed to the packaging, particularly it’s cover art and linear notes.
Capitol Records, the American subsidiary of EMI, passed on the opportunity to release the Beatles’ material, feeling the music would have limited appeal to American listeners. Instead, Vee-Jay records attempted to bring The Beatles to America. However, the first two American singles (“Please Please Me” and “From Me to You”), failed spectacularly. Vee-Jay lost interest in The Beatles, not releasing a truncated 12-track version of the album until Beatlemania hit in early 1964 as Introducing… The Beatles (more information on that release can be found here). Capitol included “I Saw Her Standing There” on their first Beatles album Meet The Beatles! (It also served as the B-side to the American version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand”) After Vee-Jay’s license to release Beatles material expired, Capitol released The Early Beatles in March 1965, which consisted of 11 out of the 14 tracks from Please Please Me (along with “I Saw Her Standing There”, it excised “Misery” and “There’s a Place”. The latter two songs were released for the first time by Capitol in 1980 on the Rarities album). The first official American release of Please Please Me occurred in 1987 with the standardization of The Beatles’ catalog on CD.
In the decades since it’s release, Please Please Me remains highly regarded as not only one of the best debut albums of all time, but one of the greatest albums of all time period. In 2012, it was voted 39th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. NME, Rolling Stone and Uncut have all named it one of the best debut albums of all time. For the 50th anniversary of the album in 2013, modern artists celebrated the album by re-recording it in one day. Stereophonics recorded the cover of “I Saw Her Standing There”. The rerecorded album was broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

Buckle in for a long one, but I think it's worth the read for those who struggle with gaming as something that can invade your life, and I think it ends on a very positive note that may motivate some real change in those who read it.
Factorio is obviously a game that is notorious for sucking you in but some people don't know the half of it.
I've been playing this game for literal years like many of the people that eventually wander over to this subreddit, and my relationship with games and factorio in particular has changed drastically over that period of time and I think it might be healthy to talk about in case I'm not alone.
I have very severe ADHD (per a recent post). In high-school it quickly became a problem as school became more difficult, my family allowed me to basically regulate myself, and I spiraled into basically abusing video games both as their own addiction and as a way to ignore life and escape from mounting responsibility and the looming horizon of adulthood.
Obviously blaming a game is silly, and I certainly don't blame factorio or any other game I've had so much fun with. As high school closed, I hurt my GPA but ultimately still graduated just fine, a 3.2 is nothing to sniff at for somebody who already struggles in school. Problem is, I wasn't convinced I could move on, and as self-fulfilling prophecies often go, I didn't apply to four-year school. I felt so ashamed that I didn't tell my family, lied to them saying I didn't get in, and as that shame spiral can often go (with or without ADHD), eventually you get found out.
I moved on to community college in the wake of COVID, and in fully online hell I floundered even worse.
Guys when I tell you I flunked hard, I flunked hard. I flunked so hard that only a community college would let me continue. If it wasn't a piece of personally identifiable information I would post my transcript, but I'm talking a line of F,F,W,F,A,B,F,F,W or something of the sort. It was because I was even more stuck in my shell. I had decided to move out, so there was that, but I had moved out into a fresh hell. I was even more attached to my computer, was losing weight despite already being clinically underweight, and so on.
During that time I built my most advanced factory, getting just shy of a 2k-spm base, logging hundreds of hours that I needed to be spending on my future in the process.
When I see people joke about how this game is crack, it makes me winge because... well, it can be in a very real and destructive way. You can escape into your factory, your colony, your characters, what-have-you.
It was so bad that I wanted to escape from my escape, and for a summer I went with my Dad to a cabin and even then I struggled. I would tell him that I was working on summer classes (which I sort of was) and I would be gaming.
I remember one day he caught me because my computer fan was obviously way too loud and he didn't say anything at first. That night at dinner as I was cleaning up he tells me to sit down and in true hard love fashion he says "You are here to get your shit together, so get your shit together." Being an adult and having your father go on your computer and delete your games is beyond humiliating, but even in the moment I was grateful.
He delivered an ultimatum in his own way. He never cared for old-fashioned "You're gonna become an x" parenting, but he said "If you don't find a path, any path, even a stupid path, and start pursuing it with your whole being your mom and I will cut you off. At some point, if you keep squandering your opportunities there will be nothing left to squander, and someone else is going to decide how your life goes". Again, at the time it was hard but it was like music to my ears. Finally there was no deeper cesspool to retreat into. I was finally at a real rock bottom from which the only way to move was up.
That summer instead of tending my factory I read What Color Is Your Parachute (a career workbook) cover to cover, read through the personal finance for dummies book, and aced my summer classes. My dad even specifically reinstalled the games on my computer and told me every time I wanted to play a game to put my headphones on with a book or podcast, go outside, and find some work to do on the cabin.
I chopped an entire tree about a hug's length around into firewood (trees are the enemy), taught myself how to mend an axe, use a chainsaw, did maintenance on a John Deere gator, etc. I rediscovered my love of ecology and decided I wanted to give another honest try to my aspirations of a soil science degree (better than no direction, certainly)
At the end of that summer I was assertive about the future I wanted, and just by the way my speech had changed my Dad knew it was time to throw me back in the ring.
The important thing I want to clarify for those who still struggle with these things is you never stop struggling, you never stop suffering, you just start suffering in different ways and struggling for different things.

I returned and many semesters later I earned my Associate's Degree. In that time I started bodybuilding and found an even higher calling in fitness for my degree. I started dating an incredibly intelligent (and incredibly blunt) woman who, though I'm young and I know things change, may very well be the woman I marry and settle down with. I got my first job, started taking a full course load in school, and I struggled in the right direction for the first time.
One night in the process of getting my Associate's, I got off my 12-9pm shift at Lowe's driving a forklift and moving product, and joined up with my gf to use the local university libraries to get shit done. At midnight that night there was still a lot to do, and my gf and I rallied in the lobby for a second. We went to the 24hr library and on the way I had my first cigarette to get me through it. I finished my work by 3am, spinning, nauseated from the cigarette, ready to collapse into a heap, and to top it off I had work and school the next day.
It was painful but I got it done.
I wandered home in a stupor behind her, and at times she would try to talk to me and I would say "If you talk to me I'll throw up right here". We got home and I stripped naked on her bedroom floor and slowly ate Ritz crackers and Jiff peanut butter. She walked in from her shower and told me I looked sad, that it made her sad to look at. I looked up and said to her in all honesty "These are some of my happiest moments. A year ago I would have said 'it's too hard' and given up. I'm winning."
I had a lot of super late nights like that, complete with crying on the phone to mom, not even sure I should keep going to college, and eventually I gained some love and mild respect from her uni friends. I would join my girlfriend in their math department building, and covered in concrete dust and having black stains on my arms from inexpertly touching the grease on the forklift forks, I would struggle mightily to learn pre-calculus while the rest of them were doing homework for their real analysis and topology classes.
At times I would break down crying to myself. Boo-hoo, life is hard, I'm tired, everything hurts, I'm so far behind, etc. My gf's mother even (rightly) asked her if she felt like she was 'dating down' because here she was on track for grad school in econ dating a CC student.
Today I got accepted for transfer into one of my top schools. I called my Dad and we cried, and I told him thank you. He's not a talker but all he had to say was "look how far you've come".
I still play Factorio, I even enjoy it more than I used to, but I've taken on so much responsibility that even now in a period that feels like I'm slacking I have all A's in a 17 credit course load this semester, and you can see on my transcript the steady and difficult climb from F's and D's to C's and B's to heights I never thought I would be capable of.
Years of learning to put myself in responsibility's way with the help of people who tell me exactly what I need to hear and never what I want to hear has let me conquer my gaming addiction. I still falter sometimes, but we all falter.
If you're a factorio player struggling to step away from the game and the internet, let me tell you, the hard things you don't want to do or admit are the key to your happiness. You will struggle to connect all of the things you need, discover new ways to become better, learn from others, but eventually, you'll launch your rocket.
It is astoundingly poetic to launch another first rocket today and, satisfied with a couple hours of gaming for the day, check my email to see that I'll be moving on from community college to go get my bachelor's before studying Physical Therapy.
TL;DR: Gaming addiction and the struggles of the initially 'gifted' student are real. The struggles of adult ADHD can be debilitating, but I know you can turn around because I turned around. I managed to launch my first rocket in life, and I hope all of you can soar away from Nauvis if it's a place you want to escape from.

With full reservoirs, cyberattacks on dams worry lawmakers
A state Senate committee has advanced a measure to prepare critical infrastructure for cyberattacks. Sen. Melissa Hurtado of Bakersfield pointed out that previous attacks have attempted to release water from a dam in New York and successfully shut down meat processing plants.
One expert testifying in support warned the federal government would be overwhelmed if a mass cyberattack threatened food, water and power. Sen. Bob Archuleta of Pico Rivera feared an attack could release water from reservoirs during winter storms, leading to catastrophic flooding downstream.
Remember: Last year the state signed into law a separate bill from Hurtado on cybersecurity for water infrastructure. It tasked the state’s emergency services office with developing a strategic plan to assist the food, agriculture, water supply and wastewater sectors with protections.
Wine Country wants to improve weather forecasting
A new bill capitalizes on emerging forecasting technology to better prepare California for sudden droughts.
Forecast-informed reservoir operations, or FIRO, aims to retain as much water in reservoirs as possible ahead of storms and anticipated runoff while enabling better flood control as well. AB 30 would expand FIRO to more parts of the state. It gained unanimous support.
Why it matters: Mark Fenstermaker, a lobbyist for Sonoma Water, explained that 1960s-era federal rules led the district in 2013 to release 30,000 acre-feet of water from Lake Mendocino. It didn’t rain for another three years. In 2019 a minor rule change enabled the district to retain more in the reservoir.
Yet the lake all but dried up again in 2021, leading cities to cut water use in half and dairies and wineries to get creative in adapting to extreme scarcity.
Vilsack keynotes Agri-Pulse policy summit
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will headline the annual Agri-Pulse Ag and Food Policy Summit today in Washington.
This year’s conference will focus on issues critical to ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability and food security.
The summit will feature interviews with the leaders of the House and Senate Ag committees and discussions with a diverse array of experts and producers. They’ll debate a range of issues, including the challenges facing beginning and minority farmers as well as future needs for risk management, agricultural research and nutrition assistance.
Registration for the summit is still available today online, or in person at the National Press Club.
By the way: The Biden administration’s “waters of the U.S.” rule officially takes effect today, an issue almost certain to occupy time at a Senate hearing this week with EPA Administrator Michael Regan. A Senate vote to eliminate the rule also is nearing.

Senate bill would freeze Adverse Effect Wage Rate
A bipartisan Senate bill introduced by a couple of unlikely allies would freeze the Adverse Effect Wage Rate at last year’s level for the rest of 2023.
Sens. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said farmers in their states who use the H-2A program are getting squeezed financially by increases in the AEWR. In Georgia, the rate went from $11.99 to $13.67 per hour this year, up 14% from 2022. The rate in North Carolina was set at $14.91 an hour, up 5%.
“I’m leading this bipartisan legislation to prevent damage to Georgia’s agricultural producers,” Ossoff said. Tillis said the wage rate “has long outpaced the rate of inflation and become unsustainable.”
Bipartisan, bicameral bill would expand AgARDA authorization
Ag groups and land-grant universities are backing a bill introduced by Sens. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and Roger Marshall, R-Kan., to double the authorization of the Agriculture Advanced Research and Development Authority (AgARDA) from $50 million to $100 million.
The bill, which is expected to be joined by a companion in the House from Reps. Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., and Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, also would expand AgARDA’s scope to address animal and plant pathogens and pests.
The agency was authorized by the 2018 farm bill but has not been established yet because of limited funding.
More bills: Another bipartisan, bicameral bill would expand biochar research efforts. In the House, Iowa Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democrats Kim Schrier of Washington and Chellie Pingree of Maine have introduced the Biochar Research Network Act. In the Senate, Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Jon Tester, D-Mont., John Thune, R-S.D., and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, reintroduced companion legislation earlier this month.
Meanwhile, bills dropped by Republican Rep. Morgan Griffith of Virginia and Democratic Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota would require the FDA to regulate hemp-derived cannabidiol, or CBD, as a dietary supplement and food and beverage additive.
Warnock: Debt relief 'can't come fast enough' for underserved farmers
Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga. is urging USDA to act quickly on debt relief programs for economically challenged farmers who have historically been discriminated against.
“I will continue to hold USDA’s feet to the fire,” Warnock said on Agri-Pulse Newsmakers this week. “We passed the legislation, and now we’ve just got to make sure that we get people the resources they need.”
Relief "can't come fast enough" for farmers who experienced discrimination, he said.
The Inflation Reduction Act allocated $5.3 billion to farm debt relief in August 2022.

Will be on Voyager of the Seas mid-April and will be going on our own to St. John's from St. Thomas port. I'm told take a taxi to Red Hook, take the ferry to Cruz Bay then taxi on to whatever beach (most likely Trunk Bay or Honeymoon). Do the ferries run to and from Red Hook regularly (like hourly), and are there taxi's around at the main beaches for easy access? I just don't want to get stuck with stressing over getting a taxi back to the ferry and then back to the ship. We want sun, water, food and drinks so recommendations on which is better - Trunk Bay or Honeymoon- appreciated!

I got into comics originally to just collect Spider-Man singles at the start of Nick Spencer’s run in 2018, but, as time has gone on, I’ve expanded to all of my favorite characters and own collections of runs on characters like Jimmy Olsen to non-big 2 stories like Something is Killing the Children and The Walking Dead. I was a high school kid when I started so big 80-150 dollar omnis weren’t really an option for me. As I’ve gotten more runs and watched more videos from channels like NearMintCondition, I’ve started to buy less and less paperbacks and move towards omnis and hcs. My question is in regards to some books I found on CheapGraphic Novels and their availability. Like I said, I love Spider-Man so J.M. Demateis is my man, one of my favorite DC books is All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison, and I know Geoff Johns has fallen off these past few years (as both a person and a writer), but his Flash run was one of the first runs I read on that character and I like a lot of his other earlier stuff like Teen Titans, Earth One Batman Vol 1, earlier JSA stuff, etc. My question is about the availability of other omnis by these creators. I really want to read Morrison’s JLA, Dematteis/Giffen’s JLI, and Johns’s Green Lantern, and currently the 3 GL, omnis, the 2 JLI omnis, and the JLA omni, are all in stock. I haven’t ever seen all of John’s JL omnis in stock while I’ve been collecting, the JLA omni is new, and the JLI omnis seem like something that wouldn’t be reprinted often. So my question is, which should I buy first, which ones would I be safe to wait on/are more likely to come back into print faster, and where can I look to find updates on what is being printed/reprinted when? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'm in the general track, but I'm sure some of these classes would fit into requirements for other major tracks.
btw: I am a peer mentor for Penn State but that DOES NOT mean I know everything. This is the perspective of a transfer student doing 2+2. Advisors are great for making sure you graduate so ask them if you have questions about your major requirements or credits needed. This is all my opinion based on my experience and/or high rate my professor scores.

  • Grade: A
  • Exams are mainly short answer, and he is a really easy grader
  • Also a final project really easy instead of a final
  • I literally never went to class and still got an A
  • He’s super cool maybe do research with him
  • No attendance grade
  • No textbook
• **BIOL 415 – Ecotoxicology with Dianne Woodward
  • Grade: still taking it but probably an A-
  • Have to read a book (Our Stolen Future) but its only half of it
  • A lot of our grades are outside projects (case studies which are basically reading something and answering questions
  • Exams are multiple choice and short answer and are based on the case studies and in lecture slides
  • No attendance grade
  • Free Textbook PDF

Medium difficulty:

• **BIOL 427 – Evolution with Dr. Towes
  • Grade: A
  • Three exams multiple choice where you can drop the lowest one not including the final
  • Essay worth not that much (15% of grade) also not that hard, he isn’t expecting the best essay ever and it is like 2 pages long
  • Still had to study with flash cards because a lot of terms to memorize, but nothing crazy
  • No attendance grade
  • Free textbook PDF
• **BIOL 339 – Practical Bioinformatics with Emily Davenport
  • Grade: A
  • No exams, but we had really long problem sets with a lot of questions about code or using code
  • Not a hard class because you can get all the help you need from other classmates or Emily (office hours)
  • Stay ahead in this course you CANNOT leave thing to the last minute.
    • Skills needed for every question on the problem set is done in class, when you do a skill PLEASE do the related question for the problem set after class
  • Problem sets take a month to complete
  • Class was not hard but was time consuming
    • OFFICE HOURS OFFICE HOURS OFFICE HOURS
  • You do NOT need to be able to code for this class, she will teach you everything and code is not too bad I promise, I knew next to nothing and did well in this course (i had done very limited self-taught python)
  • You use Unix and R studio programing languages in this class
  • Prof Davenport is amazing!!! I learned a lot and it was so fun.
  • I HAD A FRIEND IN COMPUTER SCIENCE WHO COULD HELP WHEN I WAS STUCK BUT I ONLY USED THEIR HELP ON THE LAST PROBLEM SET.
    • mainly I recommend asking prof for help since C.S, students don't really use Unix or R studio often or at all
  • No textbook
• ANTH 460 – Human genetics with Laurel Pearson
  • Grade: B- (I took this when I transferred so I was really stressed so take my view of this class with a grain of salt)
  • When I took it there was an attendance grade via tophat questions
  • I thought this was a little confusing because genetics isn’t my strong suit but the prof is really nice and will help you
  • Exams were fair and based on the slides
  • Lots of grades besides exams like there was a creative project and an easy essay
  • No textbook
• BIOL 412 – Ecology of infectious diseases with Isabella Cattadori
  • Grade: withdrew (I took this when I transferred so I was really stressed so take my view of this class with a grain of salt)
  • Not that hard but I found her exams to be confusing like we didn’t know what she was going to test on
  • I found lectures confusing
  • Average grade for the first exam was a 70% so I dropped it
  • Lots of people really like the prof I just wasn’t one of them. Lots of people really like this course and the material is interesting, but I had to work a lot
  • I cant remember if there was a textbook

Really hard avoid unless you have time:

• **BIOL 411 – medical embryology with James Strauss
  • Grade: B
  • This class was super interesting but incredibly DENSE. I am so glad I took it, but it nearly broke me
    • take with a lighter semester
  • So much studying, but the notes were exactly like the exams, so if you could absorb everything you would do great on this exam
  • Dr. Strauss is a hard-ass but he is also fair. When I took it he dropped the lowest exam grade because everyone did bad so I should have gotten a C but he gave me a B
  • GO TO OFFICE HOURS
  • Definitely my favorite class but I really had to work for it. Only take if you have proactive study habits. It took me an entire week ahead of the exam studying every day for 3-4 hours to do well on exams
  • He does give study guides that are super helpful and mirror the exam exactly. Exams are multiple choice
  • You have to get his guided lecture notes but they are GOLD so buy them at the book store
  • I can also show you my old notes if you want to see how dense the material is

• BIOL 400 – teaching biology
  • You can TA for a course and get credits for your 400 levels!! You need three total credits so most likely you would need to TA for three classes total, depends on the professor (I would ask an advisor)
    • You should TA for Denise Woodward or Laurel Pearson they are really nice
• Any class with john waters
  • I’ve heard john waters is a really nice guy and I talked to him once and he seemed lovely
  • (Also comes with a lab)
  • You don’t have to take this course specifically but just this prof is nice
• BIOL 429 – animal behavior with Adrianne Vasey
  • I dropped this course in week one for another course, but it seems interesting and super manageable
  • Dr. Vasey was super nice and approachable, and I heard a lot of good things about her class and as a prof
• 450 W – experimental field biology
  • Never took this but really wanted to! The prof has great reviews and the class sounded so fun
    • Didn’t take it because it didn’t fit in my schedule
  • You go out in the woods and look for stuff in lab so if you want to get outdoors and get some field work do this!

• Any Class with Dr. John Neisser
  • He mainly does 400 level anatomy but he’s a great professor and wicked smart
    • I’m in his 163 anatomy course right now and he’s great

I plan on studying mechanical engineering and have been accepted to Pitt, Penn State, UVA, Purdue, Johns Hopkins, and Georgia Tech. I am currently deciding between Pitt and Gatech.
I live about 40 minutes away from Pitt and would like to have the ability to come home outside of Christimas/spring break. Pitt has also given me a 10k merit scholarship so my tuition would only be 12k a year. Pitt's engineering program is respectable and is ranked in 50s according to US News.
Georgia Tech is a 11 hour drive and would likely only come home during breaks. I am also paying OOS so tuition would be about 32k a year. Gatech engineering is ranked top 5.
Is the prestige and possibly better interships/connections at gatech worth 80k in tuition? I know I want to pursue a masters so I was thinking of doing my bachelor's at Pitt and masters at gatech (or another prestigious engineering school). What's everyone's opinion?

A new documentary, titled 'One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty' is now available to stream on UEFA TV.
The 27-minute film, which was produced and directed by Richard Milway from Noah Media, tells the story of the legendary Dundalk FC centre-forward who overcame the amputation of his left arm as a 14-year-old to go on and lead the Lilywhites to the league title and a history-making achievement in Europe in 1963.
Eleven years later, in 1974, Jimmy became a victim of 'The Troubles' when he was gunned down at point-blank range by a paramilitary on the streets of Belfast. He died at the age of 38.

Hello all screenwriters who read this. I’m Sam and I have been working on a second draft of a script I plan to shoot in New York or Boston on a low budget as my first feature, cannot emphasise the low.
